thinkin’ about you
Tumblr media
author’s note: inspired by the song ‘thinkin’ about you’ by seventeen. also, this fic will probably get a second part, because i just cannot leave this on a cliffhanger without a sequel, that would be a shame
update: second part of this fic can be found here.
synopsis: you drinking a little too much and calling joshua to take you home wasn’t the best idea, or was it?
word count: 1.2k | genre: fluff, mutual pining, kinda slowburn, the tiniest bit of hurt/comfort and angst, close friends to something more | pairing: joshua x gn! reader | warnings: mentions of alcohol and being tipsy/drunk, the curse word ‘fuck’
your exam season at university was finally over, and to celebrate passing your tests you and your friends decided on going out to party at a club in the city. it was already past midnight, the party going on for several hours at that point, when you started to get really tired, having had multiple shots and cocktails, but your friends insisted on staying a bit longer. you could feel yourself get tipsier by the minute so you thought the safest option would be going home before you did something stupid or embarrassing you would regret in the morning. you took out your phone and dialed the first number that came to mind, your close friend’s, joshua’s. while waiting for him to pick up the phone your messy thoughts wondered to your long existing not so platonic feelings for him. he made your heart jump every time you thought about him, which was almost always, not just due to your feelings, but because you spent a lot of time with him on a daily basis as he was a very dear person to your heart. you have known him for as long as you can remember, and he was truly the most amazing friend you had, always being there for you, always treating you with so much care. he was like this with most of his friends, he cherished people around him and never took them for granted, you really admired him for this. you sometimes hated loving him, because it was so difficult to keep your emotions to yourself for this exact reason. who could blame you though? he was all anyone would wish for in a partner, kind, intelligent, considerate, caring.
“hello? y/n? what’s up?” he said as he picked up, voice hoarse, laced with sleep. “ah were you sleeping? sorry, should’ve known you need your beauty sleep to be this handsome.” you slurred, clearly more drunk than you thought. “were you drinking?” he questioned “are you hurt or something?” his voice sounded concerned. you laughed at this “nooo silly, i am perfectly fine, i had so much fun” there was a moment of silence before you continued “…but i need a favor, all my friends want to stay here longer, so i need a ride home. no way i’m getting into a car driven by a stranger, plus i don’t even have enough money for a taxi.” you expected him to say no, after all, it was in fact the middle of the night and he clearly had better plans on how to spend his. he sighed on the other end of the line “fine, i would much rather drive you home than letting you ask a stranger from the club to do it when you are clearly wasted as fuck.” he said while shuffling echoed in the phone, indicating that he was already getting up and changing. you knew he was right; you were not in the best shape. maybe the last margarita was a bit too much? “thank you shua baby.” the nickname slipped out on accident and if you were sober you would’ve gasped and started apologising right away, saying that he should forget about this, but you couldn’t really care less in that moment. you could hear the hitch in his breathing and the tension in his voice when he said goodbye over the phone, asking for your location and saying he would text you when he was there. you wondered; maybe drinking was a good decision, maybe getting a bit bold with words is what you needed as encouragement to tell him the secret you’ve been hiding for quite a while now, maybe you should really confess to him while you are not scared of the consequences.
20 minutes later you got the text from him and you were ready to leave. your confident march from the entrance to the car failed though when you tripped over your own feet, almost breaking half of your bones in the process. “oh my god y/n how much did you drink?” someone asked while helping in restoring your balance. you knew it was joshua right away, that voice cannot be mistaken for anybody else. “a little too much, i think?” you giggled. joshua took you to his car and opened the door for you to climb into the passenger seat. “wow thank you this is so fancy i feel like royalty.” you commented, still grinning. “well i do feel like a personal chauffeur now, coming here just to be taking your ass home. let’s go, put that leg inside so we can go, your highness.” he demanded while grabbing your leg, tired of waiting for you to clumsily get into the vehicle.
after he shut the door and got in himself to start the engine you two sat in silence for a little while before you spoke up. “i’m really sorry you have to take me home, i know i was selfish for asking, but i really didn’t have a better plan. i didn’t feel like i was this drunk when i was inside, but sitting here made me regret having the last drinks.” he looked at you at the red light. “look, i don’t mind this, really. you are one of my best friends, i would do this a hundred times if it meant you got home safely and some weirdo didn’t kidnap you or something. also, you thinking about me first when asking for help is quite flattering too you know.” he smirked. you nodded, eyes getting heavy suddenly from all that partying. “i can see you almost falling asleep. there’s a jacket on the back seat if you want it as a makeshift blanket. i will wake you when we get there. go to sleep y/n.” you didn’t bother to search for the jacket, just closed your eyes, letting sleep overtake you. “what you said is true. i do think about you a lot, shua. probably more than a close friend should.” you mumbled, already half asleep, still not sobering up enough to control and censor your thoughts before saying them out loud. “what do you mean?” his eyes went wide and he looked in your direction as if he misheard what you had said, only to see you knocked out cold, sleeping soundly like a baby. on the way to your house he couldn’t stop himself from replaying your words in his head over and over again while he checked on you from time to time to see if you were alright. he couldn’t believe what he had just heard, that you might’ve felt something more for him, something friends don’t feel, something he had been suppressing for a long time, a warm feeling in his chest. when you arrived he turned off the car, however didn’t have the heart to wake you. he knew you were exhausted, so he draped his jacket over you, and let you sleep for a bit longer, watching you rest so peacefully after shaking up his heart with your drunk monologue. he didn’t know if he should believe you, if he really had a chance of being more than friends with you after all these years. he got comfortable in his seat, facing your form, eyes looking at your still face.
“i know you are sleeping, but just so you know we will definitely have to talk about this little sentence of yours in the morning y/n. i do think about you a lot too, you know? you need to be more clear next time, because you cannot do this to me, driving me crazy and leaving me to chase false hopes.”

Chapter 18 - The Engagement Party
Tumblr media
 “Are you ready?” Minnie asked, tightening her grip around your arm. She fixed one stray strand of hair from your face, which made you smile. “We can leave whenever you want. Okay?”
“I know,” you assured. “It’ll be fine.” As you entered the massive venue, the luxury of the hotel stunning all of you to silence, you followed the crowds into the dining hall. It took a few minutes of maneuvering around others, but you all finally found the seats that were together. The minute you walked in, you saw the photos of Mingyu and Mina from their engagement photo shoot, which you knew about for weeks when Minnie found the photos circulating online. It made your stomach do somersaults, but you simply avoided your eyes, sitting in your seat. The entire room was decorated in flowers, lights illuminated every inch of the area, and the stage that seemed to be inserted just for this event was set up like a fashion show was about to begin. A spotlight sat in the middle, and you knew that in a matter of minutes, Mingyu and Mina would be standing there, arm and arm. Joshua and Jeonghan sat on either side of you, and immediately Jihoon leaned to Joshua, the duo beginning to whisper.
“This is amazing for just an engagement party,” Hoshi said.
“Yeah, they pulled out all of the stops. I feel like I’m in a big-budget movie or something.” Seungkwan added. When he saw you cover your face, he reached over and removed your hands to avoid messing up your makeup. “Sorry. It all looks horrible.” Thankfully for Seungkwan and Hoshi, you chuckled at that one. Idle chitchat for others at nearby tables filled the room pretty quickly as more people arrived. You turned your head a bit, finally laying eyes on Mr. Kim and Mr. Myoui. They were making their rounds through the tables, shaking hands and hugging friends and family. They both seemed excited for the night and were sharing that excitement with equally as excited attendees.
“They better not come over here.” You muttered, regret for saying that out loud immediately cutting through your brain. As if your comment summoned them, Mr. Kim and Mr. Myoui both made their way to your table. Everyone stood up, offering one polite bow. You did as well, immediately sitting down and looking up at the pair.
“We’re sure Mingyu and Mina will be delighted to see that their friends were able to attend.” Mr. Kim said. When he stressed a particular word’, you could have sworn he looked directly at you, but for your sanity, you chose to ignore it. You had to bite the inside of your lip. “Isn’t it all lovely? The two of them look so perfect.” He motioned to the photos littering the room, and you felt a tingle up your spine. A gentle hand on your back alerted your attention over your shoulder, and Jeonghan was right there. He seemed to nonverbally encourage you to hold your tongue for as long as you could.
Jihoon, shameless, seemed to have no problem speaking up: “Mingyu looks miserable in all of them.”
“Woozi!” Hoshi nudged him immediately, his voice hushed and embarrassed. He shrugged, smiling at Hoshi to ease his nerves.
“Right, sorry. Maybe it’s just the angle. We are sitting so far away.” He looked at the fathers of the couple, smelling their annoyance at his comment. “Forgive me.”
The pair simply left the table, Woozi’s amused smirk widening when he heard: “Tch, I cannot believe Mingyu somehow mixed himself up in that crowd.” from a very bitter Mr. Kim. Woozi turned back to the group.
“Remember, when he comes out there and starts mingling, everyone needs to look like they are happy for him and that we’re having a good time. It’ll make Mina feel worse.”
Seungkwan looked confused. “Are you sure? Won’t that just make her think we’re happy for them?”
“No. Because Mingyu will look miserable, and that’s the only reaction she’s going to be focusing on this entire night.”
“Do you think it’ll be enough to get her to call the entire thing off, though?” Minnie asked. Woozi shrugged, patting Joshua on the shoulder.
“Depends how convincing Hyung is. And from what I can tell, he’s pretty convincing.” Joshua frowned.
“You scare me,” Joshua said, but Jihoon’s grin only widened.
The party continued filling up, and as more people around you chatted about the stunning and perfect couple, you couldn’t help but feel more and more that seed of anxiety blooming through your body and into a flower of insecurity. Nobody at the table was really speaking, unable to find the right words as they waited for the main event to begin. However, that didn’t seem to help your feelings of self-worth crumbling around you. You looked back at the photos of Mingyu and Mina plastered all over like wallpaper, and you found yourself unable to hold back your negative thoughts.
So, this is how it ends. You thought to yourself, leaning back in your lush, brightly decorated chair. You brushed the tickling sensation of the tablecloth off your knee and inner thigh, pushing it back under the table before fixing your dress. Silverware and glasses shook, vibrating a low harmony with one another as they steadied themselves.
The sound of a microphone screeched into the room, temporarily cutting through the layer of idle chitchat that had befallen the beautifully decorated banquet hall. Someone up at the front of the room was speaking, but you could barely hear it. Not because it was too loud, but because your mind tried so desperately to drown out the voice. I can’t handle it. I don’t want to hear it…Your head rested in your hand, elbow acting as a stand on the table to keep you from slamming it down. Maybe that would be a good excuse to go home. No, I can’t leave. You thought. I need to sit here. I deserve to see this. I didn’t do enough….I wasn’t enough….I wasn’t enough….
Suddenly, you felt a gentle hold on your shoulder, a squeeze from a firm, yet gentle hand. A feeling of calmness attempted to override the current disdain that was coursing your veins. You looked over, eyes watering as you stared at a blurry figure beside you. You couldn’t make out who it was, but you knew you felt okay. You felt ok.
Claps and cheer erupted in the room, and you turned your head, wiping your eyes frantically. Your hands banged together like a drum you weren’t controlling, chewing your inner lip as two figures walked out before the cheering crowd. Under one large spotlight, stood Mingyu. A beautifully statuesque individual, his dark black hair combed back and styled to go well with his freshly pressed suit. You saw him smile just a bit, but you could tell how white his teeth were as his lips curled. The left side lifted ever so slightly higher than the right as he looked around. On his arm stood another figure, just as beautiful as he in her stunning white gown and veil covering her face. It was as if the duo were plucked straight out of a wedding magazine and set right in front of your eyes.
I could never be enough. You felt that thought to pierce your brain and shoot right into your heart, and you had to contain a sob, hopping the harder you clapped, the less obvious it would seem to those sitting around you. Another hand pressed against your back, but this time you couldn’t muster the strength to look away. You simply closed your eyes, taking a deep breath as the clapping around you slowly began to stop. When you turned your head, you looked behind you to see two men. You couldn’t make out their faces, most likely because you continued to feel tears well up once again, and it was dark anywhere other than the stage, but their silhouettes told you they were close to one another, and the faint noise coming from their direction. Were they…whispering? You could make out what they were saying and only closed your eyes once more. You wanted to drown out the entire night; go back to when it was simpler. Before you got yourself involved with nonsense that you knew would never work out.
The sound of your name being called felt faint at first, so you chose to ignore it. However, as you heard it get louder and louder, you couldn’t ignore it anymore. Especially when a familiar deep voice began calling it. You felt your head spinning, and you had to open your eyes, hoping your wish would be a reality. When you looked over, you saw not Mingyu, but Joshua, gripping your hands tightly. He was smiling as he knelt a bit to your level.
“Let’s dance,” he said eagerly.
Your eyes darted over his shoulder and saw Woozi was already up, making his way over to the couple as they descended the stage, seemingly ready to be bombarded by excited guests. “What?” You asked as you looked back at him.
“Let’s dance.” He said. Standing up, you looked to Jeonghan, who motioned you towards the dance floor that was already filling up with eager people. Hoshi seemed ready to follow as well, grinning wildly as the music began to pump through the room. Minnie seemed to do the same motion, grinning playfully as she sat beside Jeonghan. It wasn’t long before she and Seungkwan hopped up as well, and scurried into the crowds of people. “Come on,” Joshua said. You nodded, following him.
On the dance floor, Joshua found a spot that had not been taken, still offering the three of you a lot of room. You looked up at him as his eyes scanned the crowd, immediately falling towards the stage. You watched him for a second, neither of you moving, though he held you close to him. “Joshua, what are you-.”
“Sh.” He said quickly, before politely adding. “Please.” You turned your head, trying to see what he was staring at. However, you had no luck with the wall of people blocking your way. “Perfect. Okay, ready?”
“Ready for what?” you asked. Just then, Joshua stepped back a bit, and Hoshi hopped to his side. The both of them seemed to take a second to adjust to the beat of the song but immediately began busting out the most intense set of moves. From Hoshi, always excitable, you expected it. However, you couldn’t hold back your amused laughter as Joshua joined in, doing some silly dance in a half bend spinning his hands in little circles and sometimes throwing them up at certain beats. “Oh my god, what are you doing?” You said between laughs. Hoshi laughed at the sight too, clinging to your arm to balance himself. Joshua grinned, standing upright and taking your hands in his.
“Join me!” He shouted. You looked around, seeing that while others were enjoying the music, these two were absolutely and shamelessly enjoying themselves. You couldn’t help it and ended up joining in with the seemingly frantic and thoughtless movements shared by your friends.
Closer to the stage, Mingyu was standing beside Mina. He had his hand in his pocket, scanning the crowds as Mina thanked everyone for coming. When he was acknowledged, he simply shook the person's hand or bowed and thanked them, before allowing his attention to wander once again. Mina was beaming as she showcased her beautiful ring to her friends, squealing in delight and thanking them for making the journey to Korea for the event. In his scanning, he saw a familiar short figure approaching him, hands in his pockets and a smug look on his face.
“Oh jeez.” Mingyu sighed. “Hello, Jihoon-Hyung…You guys made it.”
“Couldn’t miss it,” he said. “Had to see the happy couple.” Mingyu had to get a dry chuckle, but Jihoon didn’t try. “Am I able to pull your wife-.”
“Don’t call her that,” Mingyu said immediately, fortunate Mina didn’t hear that as she was still distracted by her friends.
“Right. Can I steal Mina for a bit?”
Mingyu was seemingly dying for someone to ask with how quickly he stepped aside, alerting Mina to see Jihoon. She smiled.
“Jihoon! I’m so glad you’re here! Is everyone else-?”
“They’re dancing already. Great idea to have a DJ.” He pointed to the dance floor, where both Mina and Mingyu looked. Jihoon didn’t need to look at Mingyu to know his eyes immediately locked on Joshua and Hoshi, dancing with you in stitches as you joined them. Jihoon saw the smile on your face as you danced, not a care in the world. When he finally did turn to Mingyu, he saw his friend’s face turn cold, bottom lip caught between frustrated teeth. “You alright, Mingyu?”
“Hm? Yeah.” Mingyu didn’t even turn to look at Jihoon, eyes locked on the trio on the dancefloor like a sniper locking on their target. His eyes shot up to Joshua specifically, watching as he reached his hands out and took yours into them, spinning you around. Hoshi seemed to want the same treatment, leaving you bent over giggling as Joshua took Hoshi’s hand and spun him around.
I heard her confess her love to Joshua at the beach house on the first night.
Mingyu clenched his fists. Woozi looked at the bride, immediately catching her eyes studying Mingyu’s. “What’s wrong?” she asked softly. Her eyes tracked his, and when they landed on the same sight, she covered her mouth. “Oh…” she smoothed out her dress. “Mingyu, I-.”
“I’ll be right back,” he said, before walking into the dancing crowd. Mina covered her mouth. Woozi’s eyes widened in surprise, crossing his arms over his chest. He looked over at Mina. “Should I go stop him?”
Her question made him snort. “He won’t listen to you.”
Your dancing was interrupted by Mingyu approached the group. You looked over first before Joshua and Hoshi stopped their dancing and noticed him as well. He had his eyes glued to Joshua, and he immediately noticed the frustrated look in his eyes. He stepped beside you, gripping your arm. You watched the duo share very stone-cold and serious looks at one another, tension circulating around the group as it settled within this one spot on the dance floor. Anxiety began sitting in your chest again, and you stepped in between the both of them. “No fighting, please,” you begged. “Not now…” Mingyu and Joshua took a second before finally allowing their chests to deflate and their egos to calm down. You immediately glanced at Mingyu, who scratched at the back of his neck. You admired him in his suit, taking in his appearance from up close now that you had the chance. It made jealousy easily hop from Mingyu to you and sit in your stomach.
“You came.” Mingyu sounded relieved. “I didn’t think you would.” You only nodded, keeping your hands busy by rubbing them along the sides of your dress. Mingyu offered a little smile, looking down at his feet. “Listen, I-.” Before Mingyu could begin, Joshua took your arm into his. You glanced over.
“Let’s get something to eat and bring it back to the table for Jeonghan.” Before anyone could say anything else, Joshua led you off to the food table. Mingyu turned his head, watching the both of you weave through the crowd and head towards the food table. He watched as you stood, Joshua immediately motioning to all of the different snacks and treats that were offered before the main course. He watched as Joshua lifted a cupcake, carefully unwrapped it, and offered it to you. He watched as Joshua grinned, as you hesitated but took a bite. He had to stop looking when he felt his blood boil. Hoshi nudged him.
“Jealous?” He asked. Mingyu stayed quiet, and Hoshi chuckled. “I’d get over there before she starts feeding him.” Mingyu did just that, which caught Mina’s attention from Jihoon, was asking her questions about the setup of this event. She seemed happy to share until she caught Mingyu out of the corner of her eye approaching Joshua and Jeonghan. Jihoon looked over as well.
“If we were in love-,” Jihoon said. “I wouldn’t do anything other than show my love off to as many people as I could. For the whole night.” Mina frowned. “Yet the second he laid eyes on someone else was the first time this entire night I saw his eyes light up.” Mina immediately walked away from Jihoon, who only grinned as he watched her approach the trio.
“What are you doing?” Mingyu asked Joshua, who seemed confused.
“Eating,” Joshua said, taking a bite of his cupcake. “What are you doing? Shouldn’t you be with your wife or something?”
“She’s not my wife,” Mingyu said again. Just then, he felt a hand wrap around his arm and he looked over. Mina smiled.
“Yet.” She said. She caught sight of you and smiled, reaching out and pulling you into a hug. “Oh, I’m so glad you guys could make it!” She said happily.
“Yeah…” you said, only offering up a weak hug in response. You looked her over, admiring every detail of her dress, long-sleeved and floor-length, laced and beaded along her chest and around her wrists. “You look stunning.”
“Thank you~.” She beamed. “I was going to wear something else since this is my wedding dress but I loved it too much I had to wear it twice.” She giggled a bit. “I’m so glad to see the two of you come together! You both match.” She motioned to Joshua’s tie, and he only grinned. You felt a pit sink in your stomach as you looked down at your hands in embarrassment. Mingyu seemed put off as well, putting his hands in his pockets.
The awkward silence only fell over the four of you for a short time, before Joshua passed you a plate. Your hands gripped it, looking over at him as he smiled. “Let’s get something to Jeonghan, okay? He must be wasting away at the table.” A small smile formed on your lips, nodding. Joshua turned to a couple of the night. “Well, see you.” he waved, before leading you away. Mingyu opened his mouth but stopped himself when he saw Joshua and you headed back to your table on the other side of the hall. He clicked his tongue.
Mina nodded, waving you off as Joshua led you away, a plate of food in hand. Mingyu turned to watch you leave, but Mina redirected his attention almost immediately. “I’m sorry, Mingyu.” She said. He looked down at her.
“Why?” Mingyu asked.
“She came with Joshua.” Was all she uttered. “And Jeonghan.” With Mingyu stunned to silence, she led him off to mingle with some other guests.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
The rest of the night continued much of the same way. Every time Mingyu got a chance, he slithered over to talk to you. However, each time, you were entangled in the shenanigans of Joshua and Jeonghan. One or both of them had you in their clutches the entire night, dancing with you, feeding you, and keeping your attention as they spoke to you at the table. If Mingyu tried to approach, he was sent away by someone: Minnie, Seungkwan, or Hoshi, encouraging him to ‘go back to his wife’.
One final time he approached, Joshua and Jeonghan looked over. You were giggling at something they were saying, before following their gaze.
“Mingyu.” Joshua said.
“Don’t you have a wife to be attending to?” Jeonghan asked.
“Guys.” A deep, annoyed sigh escaped Joshua and Jeonghan’s lips. “Enough. I can come over here for a few seconds and-.”
“No, you can’t,” Jeonghan said simply. Mingyu frowned. “We all care very deeply about the sanctity of marriage. So, if you’re here-.”
“It could lead you to something very unpure,” Joshua added.
“And we want no part of that.” The duo’s comment in unison made Mingyu’s blood boil, and he finally looked directly at you.
“I want-.” He stopped. “I need to talk to you. Alone.” You chewed your inner cheek. “Without these two parrots sitting on your shoulder.”
“Hey.” They pouted in unison.
“See?” You looked between them, finally standing up.
“Okay.” You said. “Let’s go, then.” Mingyu, relieved, motioned you out towards one of the back doors, leading back into the hotel. Joshua and Jeonghan caught him looking around the room, and they followed his gaze each time. Mina was talking with friends, the fathers were doing the same on the other side of the room, back turned to their table the same way they had since Jihoon’s comment earlier in the evening. Mingyu led you off, and Joshua and Jeonghan immediately gave each other a high-five.
“Parrots?” Jeonghan asked, an amused look on his face. Joshua shrugged, also unable to hide his grin.
“Squawk?” The both of them had to laugh a bit.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
Mina was saying goodbye to her friends just as a slow song was coming on, and they encouraged her to find Mingyu so they could enjoy it together. A lovestruck smile formed on her face as she did so, turning to the crowds of people. She scanned left. No Mingyu. She scanned right. No Mingyu. She looked up at the seating area they were designated, to see if he was eating. No Mingyu. She felt her frown get deeper each second that passed without Mingyu in her sight.
“Looking for someone?” She turned to see Jihoon standing by her side.
“I don’t see Mingyu. Is he with you guys?” Jihoon shook his head.
“No,” he said simply. “But, now that you mention it, there’s one other person I just realized hasn’t been here in a few minutes.” Mina looked around once more, her eyes finally landing on your table. Joshua and Jeonghan were chatting with Seungkwan, laughing without a care in the world. Minnie and Hoshi were at the food table, scoping out the best snacks to bring back and enjoy. Mina’s eyes widened, but Jihoon only chuckled. “I know exactly where they went.” He said. Offering her his arm, he shrugged. “Shall we?”
“I feel like you’ve been flirting with me all night.” She said.
Jihoon shook his head. “No. I’m not interested.” He assured. Mina could have sworn she saw Jihoons eyes hit the food table, where Hoshi had happened to be examining the finger foods with curiosity and wonder. “Trust me.” When he offered his arm one more time, and she refused, he couldn’t help but laugh. The duo made their way out one of the back doors and down the long, empty corridor. “Are you ready for your wedding? It’s going to be here faster than you think.”
“I know,” Mina said. “But I think we’ll be okay. My father said he’ll hire us a professional and everything.”
“That’s good.” Jihoon nodded. “Has Mingyu offered to help?” Mina looked over. “Flowers? Dinner? Cake flavor? Those are decisions both of you have to make.”
“He said he didn’t care about what we picked,” Mina said simply. “He said to pick whatever made me happy.” When Jihoon laughed, Mina looked over at him. “What? I think that’s nice of him.”
“It is.” He said.” But, when he was planning that party on Jeju Island, he made sure everything was perfect. So that she was happy. He didn’t ask anyone else to plan anything, just what to get. He did it because her happiness was his.” He shrugged. “I just figured his wedding would make him feel the same way.”
“Well, he…” Mina trailed off, unable to find the right response to such a comment. The duo continued walking down the hallway.
“He what?” Jihoon finally asked. Mina pressed her freshly done nails together, frowning. “He isn’t interested?” Jihoon sighed. “Maybe it’s more different than I thought. I’m sure as it gets closer, he’ll come around. Don’t worry.”
Mina nodded, just as the sound of voices finally hit her ears. She looked up towards them. It didn’t take long for Mina to identify the voices.
“So you just decided to parade yourself around with him after all of this?”
“You guys invited us. I don’t know what you wanted from me!” Mina stopped in her spot, turning her head where the voices were coming from. She stepped closer, keeping herself out of view through the crack in the door, but pressing herself against the wall to hear as clearly as she could. “I told you that you misunderstood what happened and you chose not to believe me! That’s not my fault!”
“It’s like you’re trying to tell me I was right!” Mina could hear the hurt in Mingyu’s voice and she frowned. “Do you think I’m happy watching him all over you? It’s making me fucking miserable!”
“Now you know how I feel!” You shouted back. “Mingyu, how do you think I felt coming to see you after a week only to see you engaged to someone else?! I wanted to crawl in a hole and die.”
Mina looked over to Jihoon, hoping to gauge his reaction. He simply had his head turned to the window, arms crossed over his chest. She turned back to the door. From her angle, she could only catch glimpses of Mingyu as he stepped in and out of view in the crack in the window, a fleeting glance every few seconds that showcased the panic and hurt in his eyes.
“Yeah, but I have never once made Mina think I actually liked her back.”
“Remember you said that when you look at that adorable little keychain you gave her right after you turned her down.” You snapped.
Mingyu scoffed. “Are you serious? Even so, I never actually confessed love to her!”
“I was drunk and I thought it was you, dumbass!” Impulse and anger caused you to extend your hands, shoving him back. Mingyu stepped back, into Mina’s vision. She thought back to the night she saw you and Joshua on the balcony, your arms wrapped around him as you slurred your confession into the night air. She watched as Jeonghan led you back inside, leaving a flustered Joshua alone to process his thoughts.
She heard you hum “Goodnight, Mingyu.” before you were led inside. She pressed her hands to her mouth, careful not to smudge her lipstick.
“I cannot believe you would believe one thing she says to you over me! Do I mean nothing to you?!” Mina watched as you pushed yourself into view, and Mingyu pushed out.
“Of course, you know that’s not true. That’s why….” Mingyu’s voice finally dropped and softened as he put his hands in his pockets. “That’s why this entire fucking thing hurts so much.”
“Well, it hurts me too! If you think I love Joshua after such a short time with no proof, then how the fuck do you expect me to look at all of this -.” your hands motioned to his tux. “-And not think you love her too!”
“I don’t love her! I love you.”
Mina turned her head, unable to hear anymore. She didn’t realize she was clenching her fist at that moment until those words were spoken. When she looked down, her nails had dug deep into her palm, leaving bright red indents. She felt her eyes watering, unsure if it was because of the pain that began tingling in her palm, or the words playing on a loop in her head. She looked at Jihoon, who stood silently against the wall, hands in the pockets of his pants and his eyes cast out the nearby window. He only looked over for a second. Your exhausted and pained voice pulled Mina’s attention back to the door when you muttered:
“I find that very hard to believe.”
The way Mingyu practically gasped your name made it seem like it was the last word he would ever utter in his life, so much pain and longing in that one word. Mina put her hands on her skirt, gripping the soft fabric of the dress she twirled in only days earlier with her friends. This day was supposed to be a fairytale.
And it has turned into a nightmare within mere moments.
Mina heard the sound of footsteps, and she immediately looked at Jihoon, frantic and anxious. She was hoping he would direct her on what to do to avoid being caught. Jihoon simply pointed around the corner, and that was where the duo darted. Mina poked her head just slightly to see you exit the room. Your eyes were red as you wiped them, seemingly unaffected if your make-up was smudged at all. She always watched as Mingyu followed right behind you, taking your arm and turning you in his direction one last time.
The entire area seemed to freeze at that moment, Mina waited with bated breath to see what Mingyu intended to do. His grip on your wrist was gentle, he could tell by how his fingers just barely wrapped around the skin, gently resting on it. You were looking up at him, both of you sharing an intense glare. A whole conversation seemed to be happening just through eye contact, a whole history being retold through silent, parted lips. Mina watched as Mingyu finally released your wrist, watching as you walked down the hallway, not a word spoken as the story seemingly came to an end.
If that were the case, why did Mina feel unsatisfied? Mingyu stood there, hands in his pockets, and Mina simply pressed herself to the wall, covering her mouth again. Mingyu turned himself around, and Mina took the moment to study his face.
His eyes were red, darting them from left to right, up and down. His hands sat in his pockets, fearing if he pulled them out, then he would immediately start losing them. His lips were constantly rubbed by his tongue, before it pressed against his cheek, or worked to suck in a part of his bottom lip, chewing the inside. It seemed every fiber of his being was trying to prevent Mingyu from bursting into hysterics at this moment, and it only made Mina envision what she wanted to see: his beaming smile and unwavering kindness. It was supposed to happen, tonight of all nights.
As tears pricked Mina’s eyes, and she tucked herself further around the corner, she allowed herself a few minutes to remember the first time she experienced that version of Mingyu, the first time she knew that she would fall hopelessly in love with him.
-----Last Christmas, 9 months prior-----
“Mina.” A voice called, alerting the young heiress from the drab conversation she was having. Her father stood in front of her, a young handsome man at his side. “This is Kim Mingyu. He’s Mr. Kim’s son, from the law firm.”
“Hello.” Mingyu smiled, and Mina immediately felt her heart swell. She stuck her hand out in his direction, which Mingyu swiftly took as the duo exchanged a kind handshake.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you. Your father was such a big help.”
“Thank you,” Mingyu said, seemingly flustered in his father’s stead for the compliment. Mina watched her father slink away as the duo got to talking.
“Have you been in Japan long?” Mina asked curiously.
“Ah, no.” Mingyu shook his head. “This is my first time, actually. And we’re only here until tomorrow morning.” When Mina frowned, she saw Mingyu chuckle a bit. “I only seemed to come for this party. Which is amazing, by the way.”
“My father always hires the best party planners.” She pointed out. “Our last party was on the top of the company building.” Mingyu’s eyebrow arched in interest. “It doesn’t sound amazing, but the lighting and the way they decorated, you would think it was a club or something.” Mingyu grinned.
“I wish I come.”
“I’ll invite you next time, too,” Mina said sweetly. Mingyu nodded, his cheeks tinting pink as he hid it behind his glass. It only made Mina smile more. “Are you also studying to be a lawyer?”
“Yes,” Mingyu said. “I just finished my second year.” Mina nodded. “And yourself?”
“I’ve been raised to take over Father’s business since my mother first got pregnant.” She laughed a bit. “I didn’t think I’d be a good fit at first, being the first girl ever to take on the role, but-.”
Mingyu took her words right out of her mouth when he said: “You’ll do well.” Where others might be put off by the interruption, it made Mina smile.
The duo's conversation was interrupted by another male, one Mina had known for years. He showed up to every party, his father inheriting an entire conglomerate of entertainment businesses over half of Asia and acquiring even more after he married his actress wife. He slid up beside Mina, his red cheeks immediately making her step aside. His hand jerked a bit, a bit of champagne sloshing out of the glass and hitting Mina’s arm. She shook it off.
“Mina. Who’s this? Are you cheating on me?” He pointed to Mingyu. Mina immediately felt flustered, shoving him.
“In your dreams, Taro. Don’t you have much more desperate ladies to bother?”
“Only you, forever my love.” Taro grinned a bit. Mina scoffed, turning her head and taking a long sip of her drink. When she heard Taro step closer to her, she felt a figure step in front of her. She looked over, only to be met with a broad back and set of shoulders in a dashing tuxedo. “Eh? Who are you?”
“Kim Mingyu. The guy who was having a conversation with her before you so rudely interrupted.”
“Hm? T-that’s pretty rude the way you’re talking to me. I’m definitely older than you. Didn’t your father teach you to respect your elders?” Mingyu didn’t seem to be phased by the man’s slurred threats, only cocking an eyebrow in disinterest.
“I would go now.” He said simply. The man, confused and stunned to silence, watched Mingyu motion Mina to the opposite side of the party room. “Shall we?” he asked. Mina nodded, following him. When they heard Taro attempt to show in their direction, Mina’s attention was instead taken by Mingyu, who simply asked: “So, your major.” Before leading the duo into a new conversation.”
The rest of the party remained the same. Mina spent most of the night at Mingyu’s side, long after Taro was drunkenly shuffled out by the staff of the party. Mingyu kept her spirits high, making sure her drink was full and her smile was stuck on her face. It was comforting being in the orbit of this stranger who was both beautiful and kind. There didn’t seem to be a bad bone in his body, and Mina had made sure to check every angle when she had to change throughout the night. As it drew to a close, Mingyu being called by his father to meet him in the car, he looked at Mina.
“Get home safe.” He said.
“You too.” She said. “Have a safe flight home. I hope to see you back in Japan soon.” Mingyu smiled.
“I’ll consider it if there’s as many sights I missed as you claim.”
“Tokyo Tower alone is worth it.” She made sure to say one last time. Mingyu laughed, before bowing her head.
“Goodnight, Ms. Myoui.” He said. Mina nodded her head as well, waving him off as he jogged to his father’s side. She watched the duo chat for a minute, blushing when his father pointed in her direction. She offered one more wave to him, which Mingyu kindly returned, and the duo exited the room. It wasn’t long after that Mina was led out as well by one of her father’s workers, heading to the car that was ready to take them back to the house.
“It seems I made a good decision introducing you to Kim Mingyu, hm?” her father asked. Mina nodded, pressing her fingers together shyly. “The two of you were together almost the entire night.”
“Where we?” she asked, as though she didn’t know. Her father laughed at the sight of his daughter’s lovestruck face.
“That looks like the face of a young lady in love.” Mina gasped, only allowing her father to laugh once more as the car drove into the night.
Mina coughed into her hand, finally feeling tears escaping her eyes as she snapped them back to the present day. She looked over at Jihoon, who simply stayed silent. He couldn’t look at her, as if she would want him too. When she looked back down the hall, you and Mingyu had already disappeared.
“Are you okay?” He finally asked, making her look over. Mina wiped her eyes, shaking her head.
“I don’t know.” She said softly. “I thought this would all work out. I thought it would be okay after this. I really….”
Jihoon watched as Mina raked a hand through her hair, allowing some of the curls to tug so hard on her head that they loosened. He simply began the journey back to the dining hall, hoping that she would get the hint and follow. It took a second, but her heels clacked to his side. He could hear a few sniffles, and he simply said: “Pull yourself together before you go back in.”
“How did it go?” Jeonghan asked when you sat down in your seat. You took a deep breath, shaking your head. Immediately, he saw your eyes pricking with tears. “Hey…”
“I don’t think anything was solved.” You said simply. “This entire thing was a waste. He doesn’t believe me and he’s made his decision.” You said softly. “It’s too late. Mina’s won.” Joshua leaned back in his seat, biting his lip. You reached your hand up to your collarbones, the one cool and decorated area feeling newly deserted and lifeless as you felt for where a pink gemstone one sat. Feeling your chest well up with painful memories, you looked at Joshua. Then you looked at Jeonghan. “I want to go home…” you begged softly.
Mingyu reentered the room right as you were getting up to leave. Joshua and Jeonghan were at your side. He watched as the rest of your friends offered to go as well, most likely opting for relaxing the rest of the night away together rather than staying here. However, you shook your head, seeming to encourage the rest of them to stay here. Mingyu stood out of sight, hands crossed as he studied you. Even from a distance, he could sense the pain and exhaustion written all over your face. He was just about to approach you when he saw another figure enter from another entrance. He looked over, watching as Mina strolled in, Jihoon behind her. He cocked an eyebrow, a bit confused.
He didn’t seem to have a lot of time to think about where the two could have gone together, as he saw Mina make a beeline for you. “Oh, fuck…” he grumbled to himself, finally finding the courage - or maybe the dread of what was coming - to make his way over as well.
Just as you were about to exit the table, you heard a voice behind you. You turned, watching as Mina approached you. You could tell by her expression that she was frazzled, just as much as you. However, the closer she got, the angrier you felt yourself growing. What did she have to be upset about? She called your name, but you simply stepped back.
“Don’t…” you said quickly. Mina blinked, frowning. “Don’t talk to me. You have ruined everything.”

Part 1 of ???: You, a kitten, and a boy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing ▸ joshua x gn!reader genre ▸ fluff, slow-burn, mutual pining warnings ▸ school, malnourished animal (kitten) wc ▸ 674
kyrin's notes ▸ I'm planning to make this a multiple part series, but i'm not too sure how many parts i should write. Let's just see where you and Josh's story goes! pls enjoy :>
Tumblr media
It was an overcast day. The sky was gray and the air was cool and heavy. You were walking home from school when you saw a kitten, lying down on the bench at the bus-stop. You could see its ribs, its stomach bloated with worms and fleas all over its fur. You couldn’t help but feel sorry for it. Before continuing on your way, you gave it a bit of the luncheon meat you weren’t able to eat and some water.
The next day, on your way home, you noticed that the kitten was still there. Luckily, you had some food to give it, so you gave it your leftovers and some milk. Day by day, that became your routine. On your way home, you would leave some food and water for the little kitten. Until that day. Waking up late, you forgot to pack lunch, so you just ate the food from the school canteen. Of course, the servings weren’t very big; that’s why you had to pack your own lunch everyday. While walking home, you were feeling bad for not being able to give anything to the kitten, until you saw him.
He was feeding the kitten. You had seen him at school before, you were even in the same batch. Racking your brains, you tried to remember his name. Joshua. That’s it. The shy boy who sat a row in front of you, to the right. Come to think of it, you’d never really heard him talk, and here he was, petting and feeding the kitten you’d come to consider your own.
Joshua didn’t even seem to notice you, engrossed as he was with making sure the kitten ate. That is, until you accidentally stepped on a twig, catching his attention. He suddenly looked up at you. In that moment, you couldn’t help but think of how much like a deer trapped in headlights he looked. Fortunately, his bus arrived and he hurriedly climbed onto it. The very next day, you saw him at school. Of course, like always, you ignored each other. Although, today felt slightly different. Before, when you ignored each other, it was always because both of you were busy with your respective friend groups, or schoolwork, or other things. Today, however, you found it surprisingly difficult to ignore him. You really wanted to talk to him for some reason. What would you guys even talk about? You don’t know his interests, and he doesn’t know yours. So, you went on with your day. Good thing you remembered to pack your own lunch today, so you can feed the not-so-skinny-anymore kitten.
As you were changing your shoes, you felt your friend tap your shoulder. “What?” You asked.
“Why’s Joshua coming here? We don’t even talk to him.”
You looked up, and there he was, awkwardly making his way to you. You stood up fully and lifted your eyebrow. When Josh stopped in front of you, neither of you could keep eye contact. Then you heard his quiet, kind sounding voice. “Good thing you remembered to bring extra food today. I noticed you forgot yesterday, so I fed the kitten for you.” What? “Oh. Um, yeah. Thanks for yesterday, I guess.” You reply, slightly confused.
You notice his ears reddening and he quickly goes back to his friend group. “What was that??” Your friend asks.
“I don’t know either, to be honest.” You reply.
That awkward (and admittedly adorable) interaction told you a lot. He knows you feed the kitten everyday, he knew you forgot your lunch yesterday, and he knows you made sure to pack lunch today.
You shake your head and get on with your day. When you get to the bus-stop, you feed the kitten, like always. You can’t help but think of Joshua. How did he know that you feed the kitten everyday? He noticed that… he noticed. Before now, you were always a passive presence in each other's lives. But now, you're finding it a bit hard to keep him out of your head.

5:12 PM
Tumblr media
You and Joshua needed a vacation desperately and he couldn’t agree more. The months before the public holidays always get busy for the both of you in your respective field of work. So, this announcement was a pleasant surprise on your part, courtesy of your boyfriend.
Maybe it was possible to fall for your lover all over again for such meticulous planning.
 “You just sit there and look pretty, love. I’ll even take your pictures when we arrive,” he promised. And gosh, you could jump his bones from how sweet he is.
He’s lying down on the beach chair, the light wind and the Nipa Hut’s shade a balm to your sun kissed skin. After taking your own photos, you wanted nothing more than to just be with him. If you could attach yourself to him, you would. You know you’re usually not like this. But the rarity of spending time together when you’ve both been so preoccupied prompts the thought.
“Done taking pictures, baby love?” Joshua beams up at you and intertwines your hands together.
Wordlessly, you swing one leg over his waist and wriggle until you feel comfortable. He grunts in surprise but he instantly wraps an arm around you as you lay down on him, your ear to his chest. His other hand travels up and down your bare skin, his touches gentle yet it makes you shiver.
Raising your head up, you mutter, “I love you.”
His eyes crinkle into crescent moons, “I love you more. How are you liking it here so far?”
“It’s beautiful. And I’ve never felt so relaxed, thank you for indulging me.”
He clicks his tongue, “the bare minimum.”
You snort and his happiness is contagious because you find your lips curving up at his chuckle. It’s followed by a comfortable silence as you lay your head back on his chest. You sigh contentedly as Joshua returns to drawing random shapes on your back while his other arm is draped loosely around your waist.
At 5:12 PM, the day star begins her rest as nature’s dome is slowly engulfed in tangerine and merigold. It’s 5:12 PM and you have never felt more tranquil, laying there with your lover in absolute bliss.

𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 • 𝐣𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐠
Tumblr media
warnings: vulgar words, angst, idk let me know, if i missed anything.
like a deja vu, you found joshua once again, infront of your doorstep. on his knees as you looked down on him. with tears cascading down his cheeks, and him begging for you to have him back.
"please, y/n. i don't know what to do without you, i will be good! i promise, please, love. take me back." he said as he looks up at you, holding your legs.
he's so pretty when cries, he is so pretty you missed all the red flags. you missed the way he cheated on you.
"aren't you the one who broke up with me because i'm too boring? too plain for you taste? why are you coming back over and over again, joshua? you're supposed to be with your little girlfriend, the one who made you feel so good?"
joshua's heart clenches as more tears come out of his eyes, his quivering lips pleading and apologizing.
for some reason, you like it when he keeps coming back to you, like a dog that's always coming back to its owner. you love seeing him suffer, and beg. maybe it's your hatred and people might say you're being so fucking bitter about it, but who cares? you're the one who got hurt, so you're the who will decide what to do with him.
"you're only coming back because you never felt important to her except when you dicking her down. you want me back because you know, i'll do anything for you. you're a fucking opportunist, joshua."
his violently shook his head, as the sound of his cries gets louder and louder, enough to bother your neighbors.
"i love you, y/n. i do, i dream of you even if i'm awake. i'm willing to do anything, please! you can hide me, or use me, i don't care. please, i just want to feel you."
"get out of my house."
"but-"
"get out!"
he flinched when you shouted at him, he stood up as he now towers you, with his head hanging low, he's looking at your hands. you don't have the tattoo you got with him, you removed it. and that's what kills him the most.
"love, i'm sorry." he said as if there's still something he wants to say, you shut the door in front of his face.
and there he was walking out of your house, knowing he'll come back over and over again. he will call you even though you never answered, he will text you everything he does everyday even though you never replied, but seeing that you left him in read makes his heart flutter, he thinks you still care, and that's enough for him.
he doesn't care if you take him back and only use him and hide him from everyone, he just wants to be with you, back in your arms.

Pairings: Joshua x gender neutral reader! Friends to lover! College au!
Warnings: Minor language, fluff.
Word Count: +2K
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quietness took over the building as each student inside did a variety of things that were intended for school.
Studying, reading, writing.
You sat at your own two seated table. A white lamp brightened the secluded area that you studied in. The chair next to you was empty. Saved for someone specific. Designated for your friend, Joshua Hong, to come in and help you study for your similar upcoming exams.
You were a Junior in college. Finishing up the last class credits you needed to graduate. Which included passing said exams. You were 100% nervous, absolutely terrified. You couldn't lie about that or else you'd grow a large nose..
Especially since you had been staying up almost every night til at least 2 am everyday for the past week studying for all your important tests.
You wanted to make your parents proud. Not even just them. You wanted to make yourself proud. Looking forward to getting high paying yet enjoyable jobs that provided her with the money needed to fend for herself and her future after school.
You told your parents exactly this, which is why they hired Joshua to be your tutor. Which is how they become acquainted in the first place.
You weren't BAD persay, but you weren't the smartest either. Joshua, however, was. Which was one of the very many reasons you began to like him. That and the fact that you found him to be very funny and super handsome.
The crush didn't start not too long after your first few sessions. He was always so understanding, gentle, patient. Unlike a huge percentage of the the attendees on the campus.
But along with the hot smirk and the turning personality thoughts came his tardiness. Consecutive would be a dramatic word to describe it not being the first time. Only the third time in the last two weeks to be exact. But you choose to give him the benefit of the doubt.
You knew it was because of his friends. And you couldn't blame him. If you weren't so worried about you own piled up assignments, you'd probably be with your friends a lot as well. Maybe even at this moment. You could easily ditch this session and do so now.
However, getting heated over that topic would only make you very hypocritical.
Another ten minutes pass of you sitting alone. At this rate, you'd only be able to get work done for a single class. It works. Better than nothing. You mentally thump your head for not just choosing to start on your own. Hoping in general to get done with at least three.
You deeply sighed. Pulling you hard covered text book towards your chest. The sound of the material sliding against the wood making a swoosh sound.
Skipping to the chapter you need to study on, you began reading away. Skimming through the bold text. Using a bright orange highlighter, you colored any quotes or sentences that answered questions on your study guide.
That same routine you followed for the rest of the hour you had left in the library before you felt the sudden want to just finish the work at home.
You stamped the lid onto the neon utensil and packed it back into the pocket you pulled it from.
You pull the history book cover, shut. Sending a miniature wave of air to dash on the papers beside it.
Just as you were about to put your papers away, the longed presence you spent the last hour waiting for, had finally showed up. Out of breath, textbook in hand, and his backpack over his shoulder.
You stared at him with risen eyebrows. "You okay?"
"Y...just give- give me a second."
His limp upper body bent over after slapping the book onto the desk. The smack catching the attention of a staff member. You smiled to apologize. His heavy breathing filling the enclosed area. He slapped his hand on his stomach after letting out a whistle threw his lips.
"Sorry- I'm late. I- had...OH MY GOD."
"You should sit down."
He obliged to your suggestion and sat in the wooden chair behind himself. You slid your water bottle to him where he gave you a thankful look and downed half the water before returning back to normal.
"I had detention. Mr. Kim."
"Ah, I see," you nodded with pursed lips. "Well, uh- I got some work done so, I'm not gonna waste any of your time. I'll just head hom-"
"Home? Why?" he questioned while standing. Assumingly faster than he zoomed to the building.
"Because I'm sure you're busy. And it's already 4. Passed session time."
"So?"
His questioning responses were shaking you to the core. Especially with the middle toned masculine voice he had. Same voice you always looked forward to hearing.
"So...I'm sure you don't wanna sit in here any longer."
"Y/n, if you're here, then I wanna be here."
Those words. Those damn words. You had lost count of how many times your stomach absolutely churned when he spoke like that. Or even said your name right before he said something in such a way. But if you had a dollar for every time you did get butterflies, you'd be in Hawaii, living life. "I don't wanna do this alone."
Joshua sat back down. Pulling open his textbook. When he noticed your figure not joining him yet, he tapped the seat with his yellow pencil before pulling out more papers.
You quietly hide the giggles and smile you were so desperately trying to not have, but this boy, well he made it hard. Very hard. So hard your cheeks actually began to hurt.
"Okay, what class have you already done work for?"
"Uh-" you finally join him. "I did history."
"Cool. Then the hard part is out of the way. So, let's do Math and then English. Let's say 45 minutes each. Deal?"
The boy with shiny mid length brown hair peered his eyes to the other human sitting beside him. Eyebrows risen as he waited for a response. You were so caught in his beautiful figure that it took the clearing of his own throat to gain your attention back to it's rightful place. Not fast enough.
"Huh? Oh, yeah. 30 minutes each. Sounds amazing."
"45 minutes."
"45. Got it."
The boy laughed at your quirkiness, making sure you didn't see that he had found himself adoring it more than he should. Not wanting to expose his ownself.
"Cool."
You two began working together like you had many times before. Thanking the heavens you had almost all the same classes so you could work together on most of them.
The first set of chosen minutes had passed like lightning speed. But, you did work great together so you got more done than expected.
As for the next set of the time, you begun to lose control as to what you should have really been working on. The work. But instead, you're busy watching a video of Joshua at a young age, singing into a plastic karaoke mic. Red and yellow colors matching the rainbow jumpsuit he wore in the film.
The boy felt embarrassed, but everytime he tried to pull it away, you couldn't help but grab his wrist, stopping him from moving the phone. Your grip sending chills down his spine. You enjoyed the little clips of him vocalizing so beautifully.
He's definitely gotten better. It was really improved. You've seen him practice between classes. Along with his whispered humming he does when you work silently.
"God, imagine having such an angelic voice at a young age," you sighed. Sitting upwards to stop yourself from slouching. The chairs weren't so comfortable. "Especially if you've been around instruments all your life."
"Well, thanks to musicals and many TV series. I have that special opportunity."
"Well, you're amazing!"
"Noo, you're just saying that-" he began to fluster. Staring at pencil in hand.
"I'm not. I've met a lot of musical students, but you by far, are my favorite," you smile shyly. Tapping his broad shoulder.
"It's cause most a looked down upon by parents for the music major."
"It seems difficult. But you do so well, I bet when a stranger first hears you, they're shocked when they hear you sing so well."
His cheeks began to turn a bright red. Trying so hard to not beam the smile he so deeply kept down. Like you also had been doing.
"Honestly, now, it makes sense how I don't do so well in school. I'm not as talented. Just good at writing."
Joshua flipped his eyes to now look at your view. Shaking his head. "No, don't compare those. Y/n, writing is also a talent. Poetry, even writing lyrics. And besides, you're already too smart."
"I'm not. If I was, I wouldn't need you to help me with all of this."
"That's your parents and your brain talking. You never needed me."
You stare blankly at the papers on the wooden table. Confused as to what he really was getting to.
"I'm surprised you haven't canceled yet."
"Me?"
"Y/n, you know how may times you've gotten to an answer on your own. Without my help," he spoke softly. "You're really smart. And you know it. I know you do."
"So, why say yes to the tutoring then?" you giggled. Trying to make it seem like his compliments were just reflections of you complimenting his singing.
Joshua's heart began to skip. Losing it's calories for it's very own exercises.
He didn't know how to come out with it in a better approach than this. And if he didn't answer now, who knew when he'd have another opportunity to say what was on his chest. Now or never.
And now is always better.
"Okay, to tell you the truth..."
He began to become hesitant. Your chest started racing as well. But you wanted to hear it. Whether it was a pitiful coming comment or a very beneficial one, you asked, and you wanted to know.
"You can tell me."
One half of his mouth curved into a smirk. Looking down to the floor before looking back up. "I knew the first few times I worked with you, that I didn't need to tutor you. But it felt good to talk to you, so I just kept showing up."
You nodded. Giving him permission to continue.
"After awhile, I got to know you more. How smart you were. How funny and kind your were, and I just couldn't stop seeing you. So, to tell the truth, Y/n. I honestly really like you. And I know it's probably suddenn but I needed to say something."
The words you had longed for, for so long had finally fallen out his mouth and you couldn't at all hide the big ass smile you plastered. Almost built like a bright and large rainbow.
"I just hope you like me. And I didn't totally just embarrass myself."
You giggled. Placing a hand on his cheek, you pulled his face so you could place a kiss on his other cheek.
"I like you too. Why do you always think I stay even after you're late? To stay with you."
"I should've picked up on that," he chuckled. You nodded in agreement before Joshua exchanged a kiss back to your temple as he hugged you.
"Let's finish work so I can't take you out to dinner."
"Really? You don't have to."
"I want to."
Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye
Warnings: Miscarriage, Depression? Angst? (Let me know if there's anything else I miss)
A|N: Based on the song, "Bigger Than The Whole Sky" by Taylor Swift. I hope you guys like this one, I've been having writers block 😭 I did cut some parts of the song out. I recommend hearing the song while reading this. Let me know what you guys think.
-------------------------------------------------------
No words appear before me in the aftermath
Salt streams out my eyes and into my ears
Every single thing I touch becomes sick with sadness
'Cause it's all over now, all out to sea
"I'm sorry for your loss, Mr. and Mrs. Hong."
For the past two hours, that sentence has been replaying in my head over and over. I sit up on the bed, and my hands begin to tremble. My breathing uneven, my head falls onto my hands, and my vision blurs. Uncontrollable sobs pour out, and then I feel the warm arms of my husband's wrap around me. Josha pulled me into him, and I could feel his body shake as he tried to control the tears that threatened to spill. He holds me close to his chest and kisses my temple. No words were said as we both sit there crying over our beloved loss.
"I'm so sorry, Josh," I cry out. "It's all my fault, I'm the reason why our baby isn't here with us. I'm the reason why we lose everything because everything I touch gets sick."
"Don't say that," he cries. "None of this is your fault. Do you hear me? None. This happens, and it's out of our control. So please, my love, do not blame yourself."
I wrap my arms around his neck as he tries to pull me impossibly closer to his chest, and tears consume us once more.
Did some bird flap its wings over in Asia?
Did some force take you because I didn't pray?
Every single thing to come has turned into ashes
'Cause it's all over, it's not meant to be
So I'll say words I don't believe
I entered the room where Joshua and I spent most of our time getting ready to welcome the new edition into our family. I walk up to the crib where our child would've slept in, tears spilling in the process, and I wipe them away. I look at the dresser where the ultrasound was displayed in a tiny frame. My fingers gently run across the wood and onto the photo.
'Mommy is so sorry, baby. It's my fault that you are not with us. I haven't had the chance to at least hold you in my arms that were supposed to protect and love you, my little angel, but I do love you so much.'
Tears stream out of my eyes and down my cheeks. I hold the photo in my hands and place a kiss onto it. I put the photo in it's place and walk out of the room. I close the door and head to my own. I lay in bed as the tears continue to fall. I feel the bed dip behind me and I'm pulled into Josh's chest. I could feel him place kisses on the back of my head. I turn in his arms and look at him, eyes red, and swollen. I wipe his tears away as he does for me. I place a kiss onto his plump soft lips and rest my forehead against his.
"I know what you're thinking, and it's not your fault, love. They know it isn't your fault either."
I sigh and nod my head as a silent okay. He pulls me to his chest once more. My eyes flutter shut and sleep engulfs me.
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
You were bigger than the whole sky
You were more than just a short time
And I've got a lot to pine about
I've got a lot to live without
I'm never gonna meet
What could've been, would've been
What should've been you
A month has passed since the horrible news, our family and friends would visit us. Seungcheol and the rest of the members stopped by with food and drinks. I sadly smile and head to the kitchen. I pull out the drinks for them and place them onto the counter.
"Hi y/n," Jeonghan says.
"Hi Hannie."
"It's been awhile since I've seen you smile," he states, but carefully contines as if he doesn't want to cause me pain. "I hate to bring up this topic since I know it's very sensitive and fresh, but how do you really feel?"
I sigh as I look at the counter, I could feel the tears, but I keep them at bay. I slowly breathe in and out. I turn to look at Jeonghan and I see a mixture of worry and sadness in his facial features.
"I still feel as if it's my fault. Shua says it isn't, but I still can't help feel this way."
"I understand, I mean, no words will make you think or feel otherwise. But what he says is true, it's not your fault, and we all love you. We are all here for both of you. I hope you know that."
"I do, Hannie." I sadly smiled. "It's just hard to live knowing that I've never got to see their face, hold them, and give them kisses. It's not fair that I loved them so much, and they were taken away from me."
Jeonghan pulls me into a hug. "You'll both be okay. You both will have another opportunity one day to be able to love another child of our own again. It's going to take time to heal these wounds, but we are here for you." He says once more as he pulls away. I smile at Jeonghan and wipe my tears.
"Thank you, Hannie."
"Let me help you with the drinks."
He grabs a couple of bottles, and I do the same. I entered the living room and found the members spread out on the floor passes plates and food. I smile and go to sit next to Josh. Josh looks up at me and smiles but fades away once he sees my face.
"Are you okay? What's wrong?"
"Everything's fine," I said. "I was just talking with Jeonghan."
"Are you sure you're okay?" He asks once again.
"Yes," I say with a smile.
Josh looks at me again and smiles. He places a kiss on my head and pulls me close to him. The rest of the night is filled with laughter and smiles.
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
You were bigger than the whole sky
You were more than just a short time
And I've got a lot to pine about
I've got a lot to live without
I'm never gonna meet
What could've been, would've been
What should've been you
White roses fill the backyard garden. Family surrounding both Joshua and I as we held a small black box containing a yellow onesie that would've been our little angel's. Tears rolled down my face, Joshua held out a tissue for me, and I dapped it onto my cheeks and let out a shaky sigh. I look back at Joshua and let out a small thank you. He holds my hand and places a gentle kiss on my knuckles.
Joshua and I walked up to the sliver stand that was surrounded by the roses. I kiss my fingers and place it onto the headstone. 'Our Beloved Child, Angel Hong'. Sobs spill out and go on my knees with the help of Joshua. He soon follows, and we hold the box and place it onto the ground. Hands grabbed the soil, and we placed flower seeds once it was completely buried. I hold my face in my hands as I continue to sob, and I feel my mother help me back onto my feet. She holds me close to her and places kisses on my head. My dad rubbed my back, trying to soothe me. My siblings stand close to me as they cry. I lift my head up from my mom's shoulder and look towards Joshua. His mom holds him, his uncle handing him a tissue and his members looking at the ground.
Joshua looks at me and lets go of his mother as we make our way towards each other. He wraps his arms around my waist, and I wrap mine around his neck. His face buried in the crook of my neck, and he placed a kiss. We stayed there for a while, holding each other, he pulls away and placed a kiss on my lips.
"Our Angel will be watching over us now," he says. "My love, I haven't said this in a while with everything that has been happening, but I love you so much."
Tears well up in my eyes, and I blink them away.
"They are now in heaven resting," I say. " I love you so much, too."
I placed another kiss on his plump lips, but we soon pulled away and headed inside the house where our family was waiting for us.
"Wait... Josh, I want to do something," I tell him.
He looks back and nods his head. We walk back to the spot where Angel's headstone is at. We stand side by side as silence consumes us. I take a step towards the stone and place my hand on it.
"Angel," I start. "Our sweet little Angel, though we will never get the chance to meet or know you. Just know we will never forget the moments we had with you when you were still in my belly. Those midnight snacks you wanted that your dad would get for us, but what I want to say is we love you so much, baby."
I place a kiss onto the stone and backed away. My hand finds Joshua's, and I hold onto it tightly. I wipe my tears away and look at Joshua. I wipe away his tears, and he smiles at me. I kiss Joshua's lips, and we make our way inside the house.
'Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, our sweet little Angel'
one bed, two friends
pairing: college student!joshua x reader wc: ~1000 words genre: fluff ; no trigger warnings
you're just looking out for joshua when it's too late at night and you offer for him to sleep over, right?
note: a request from val @fairybinie who wanted friends to lovers plot with joshua <3 mayyyyy or may not have been based on two very recent experiences i had with someone...
Tumblr media
“Joshua, you know it’s like,” you glance down at the wall across from the couch. A yawn prevents you from connecting your sentence. “Almost 11:20. Don’t you have to get back to your dorm? Like I’m sure Seokmin might be a little concerned.”
You two may have gotten a little carried away watching a new series that everyone’s been raving about. Sure, you two were supposed to just get dinner, but in between bites, you talked about how you’ve been waiting for the right time to watch, and Joshua asked you if there ever is a right time.
That’s how you ended up here, sitting barely an inch away from one another underneath a blanket, trying to deny that there was anything going on between you. Just laughing a little too loud when he makes a joke based on a scene in one of the episodes and leaning your head on Joshua’s shoulder beside you when you can’t stomach a jumpscare. Those aren’t really things to be writing home about, especially not the fact that you barely checked your phone over the 4 hours he’s spent at your apartment so far.
“I mean, it is a little far for me to be walking home at this late time at night, don’t you think?” Joshua tugs the blanket a little closer to him and sinks a little farther into the couch. His voice is softer than usual, making sense of the situation.
You nod. “You can just sleep here tonight. Joonie’s at Soonyoung’s dorm, doing God knows what at this hour,” you chuckle. “So she’s not coming back until tomorrow afternoon.”
“Thanks, (Y/N), I really appreciate it.” It’s not like he hasn’t slept over before either. It’s almost the end of the semester, and he’s found himself curled up on this same couch at least 3 times. But each of those times was after Mingyu took it upon himself to host drinking parties at your apartment and a few of the guys had to stay back with Joshua because the effects of alcohol were greater than their bodies.
This situation, however, has never happened before. A flush brushes across your cheeks as you scratch the back of your neck. “So where do you want to sleep?”
“What are you comfortable with?” is the first question that comes out of Joshua’s mouth. “I mean—”
“Anything is fine. What are you comfortable with?”
With a soft smile, he replies, “Anything is fine with me too.”
It embarrasses you to say it, considering the tiptoe-ing both of you have been doing, but you let it out before you can stop yourself. “Do you want to sleep on my bed?”
You can see Joshua’s mouth gape with a shift in his gaze, and you are ready to take it back. You dig your fingernails into the flesh of your palms underneath the blanket. There’s a breath stuck in your throat. You should just take it back. Anything for your best friend to not look at you weirdly and want to start walking back to his dorm at 11 at night—
“Sure, if you’re okay with that.” Joshua’s sincere smile washes away all your worries. “I’ll just send a quick message to Seokmin to let him know I’m not coming home tonight.”
Something about that statement makes your cheeks not only flush but burn. You walk away before he can get a sight of your tomato face, running your fingers through your hair multiple times as you enter your bedroom.
Joshua comes not soon after, holding the blanket in his hand. “Ready?” He tosses the blanket onto the foot of the bed.
“In a bit,” you mutter, slipping your body around him to grab your toothbrush. You look at his reflection in the mirror, settling on your bed as if it’s normal. His crossed legs, his back against the wall of your bedroom; how did he look so good just being ready for bed?
Your gaze falls as soon as his eyes meet yours, and you brush your teeth for as long as you can. Anything to prolong having to be in the same bed, at the same time—
Okay, now you’re drooling, so you spit out the toothpaste and wipe your face. You can do this, right?
“Do you like to sleep on the inside or outside?” Joshua asks as soon as you walk back into the bedroom. He stands next to your bed with a grin bright as ever, but his tired eyes betray him.
“Inside is fine.” With a scan around your bedroom, you cross your arms and scrunch your nose at your messy desk and the pile of things forming in your closet. It’s a challenge to tackle for another day, so you turn off the light and crawl into bed, scooching over as far toward the wall as you can so Joshua can come in right after.
With the light off, you rely on your other senses to gauge how Joshua’s feeling. You’re like two sardines in this twin-sized bed that's only enough for one person, arms either crossed or tucked to your sides. His breath is labored and shallow.
The moonlight transcends the mere fabric of the curtains beside your bed, landing slightly on Joshua’s face. “Are you having a hard time sleeping too?” You ask, counting dots on the ceiling to try to pass time.
“Yeah. You have a small bed.”
“Not much I can do about the bed.”
“Well, maybe we can get a little closer?” Joshua turns on his side, and his gaze is so intense that you turn over to look at him. He can’t help but rest his hand on your waist since there are barely a few inches between the two of you. The soft sigh you let out is the last thing Joshua hears before he closes his eyes to finally rest.
(No, there’s nothing wrong with sharing a bed when there’s only one bed, but when it’s you and your friend?
It’ll never be the same.)
Chapter 10 - The Weekend Begins
Tumblr media
When the blonde approached you, he seemed to be studying you heavily. Your eyes followed him as he walked around you, rubbing his chin in confusion.
Finally, you asked: “And you are…?”
He simply said: “Chan.” When got back in front of you, he put his hands on his hips. “You’re the girl Jisoo-Hyung and Jeonghan-Hyung have to help out, hm?”
“I guess so…” you glanced up at the rest of the men. Seokmin looked over at Joshua.
“You’re right. She’s really pretty.” Joshua forced back a chuckle as he glanced in your direction. When he felt the daggers that were Seungcheol’s eyes, Seokmin pursed his lips together. “Sorry, Hyung.”
Seungcheol now was the one to walk over to you. “I really didn’t think we’d have to meet but-.” When he stuck a hand in your direction, you looked at him. “I’m Seungcheol. Those two knuckleheads over there-.” He motioned to Joshua and Jeonghan, who you quickly noticed were huddled together, seemingly bickering about something. You caught sight of their narrow brows as they spoke in low voices to one another. “Those are our brothers.”
“Brothers.” You quickly took Seungcheol’s hand, and he smiled when you politely bowed your head. He – just like the rest – was radiating with elegance and beauty. By simply standing in one place, you could feel the otherworldly presence surrounding every one of them. It felt stronger than Joshua or Jeonghan. Could it be that you were adjusting to their constant presence? When you glanced over at Joshua and Jeonghan again, their bickering had simmered down to the usual banter and snide remarks, before they looked away from one another. When Chan slipped up next to you again, you felt the sensation of plastic hit your leg and you looked down. Inside the plastic bag you were gripping were the snacks that Woozi had paid for. “Oh. Joshua-.” You hurried over to him, handing him the bag. Joshua took it, peering inside. He could feel Jeonghan slithering up behind him, peering over his shoulder. “I just grabbed tons of stuff. There’s ice cream, kimbap, noodles, yogurts, and milk. I wasn’t sure what you would be in the mood for, so-.”
Joshua smiled as you rambled to yourself about your findings. “Thank you.” He said. You offered him a smile. Just then, Joshua felt Jeonghan nudge him, reaching out himself and grabbing the bag first. “Hey. Those are for me.” He frowned, his hands extending quicker.
“Aah, gluttony is a sin,” Jeonghan said with a grin in Joshua’s direction. Joshua couldn’t help but scoff; the duo both took hold of the bag and looked inside. The playful banter they shared calmed you as you watched them. As if on cue, you saw Chan and Seokmin follow behind, asking their older brothers for some of the snacks as well. As you stood by, you watched Joshua easily pass one to Seokmin. When Chan reached for one, the trio of older angels playfully denied him. They looked amused for a second at the distressed youngest, before Jeonghan finally passed him a snack as well. The smiles on their faces were content and angelic. They seemed happy to be back in the presence of loved ones, pushing all previously held disagreements behind them as soon as the youngest ones approached.
“Why are you guys even here?” you asked, looking back at Seungcheol and Wonwoo as they kept their distance from the seemingly much louder bunch. The duo shared a glance at one another, then turned back to you. Wonwoo was the one who approached you, putting a hand on your shoulder. He turned you back towards Jeonghan and Joshua, a finger extended to point to the duo as they opened a bag of chips, all four men sending their hands inside to grab a few bites. “Is it because Joshua got hurt?”
“Kind of. The longer Joshua and Jeonghan stay on Earth, the more they’re going to act like humans. That means the more they’re going to get hurt.” He said. You glanced back over to him. “They’ve already been here a long time.”
“How long?” you asked curiously.
Seungcheol put his hands in his pockets as he looked up at the men snacking. “For humans? It might have been about a calendar year. But to us-.” He motioned between himself and the rest of the group. “But where we’re from, we’ve been waiting for them to come back for about 100 years.”
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
The tension between Joshua and Jeonghan seemed to drop after their brothers left, Chan and Seokmin saying their goodbyes. You watched as Seungcheol stood in front of Joshua and Jeonghan, arms crossed. You had a full view of his back, broad and defined under his white shirt as he spoke.
“Don’t play around anymore.” He said, eyes darting to Joshua. “Finish what you have to finish so you come back.”
“Yeah,” Joshua said.
“Try not to let your feelings get in the way. If not for yourself, then for us.” Joshua didn’t respond to Seungcheol’s comment this time, only avoiding his eyes. “See you soon.”
“See you soon,” Jeonghan said, waving him off. Seungcheol approached you as well, smiling.
“Sorry, we came unannounced.”
“It’s ok.” You assured. “It was short, but they seemed happy to see you.” Seungcheol smiled once again. “You can come back if you want. If you can…”
“Can we?!” Chan gasped, eyes wide in excitement. “We should. We can get some good food together. That would be fun. We can bring everyone next time. Jun and Hansol, and Minghao too.” You smiled at Chan, nodding in agreement.
“Hopefully, this will all end soon enough and we won’t have to. But we’ll remember the offer.” You nodded, bowing one more time, this time, Seungcheol kindly returned the bow himself. “Alright, let’s go.” He said, motioning the others out. You watched them head out, waving one last goodbye before finally closing the door. As you locked it, you rested your head against the door, letting out a deep sigh.
“Are you okay?” You heard Jeonghan ask. When you looked over, you smiled.
“Yeah.” You said. “I’m glad they came to see you. They must care.”
“They do.” Jeonghan nodded. “They want what’s best for us.” He offered a brief side glance at Joshua, who simply nodded quietly.
You clapped your hands together as you turned to face them. “I’m going to get some rest. Finals are getting closer.” You pushed past the duo, making your way into your bedroom. Before you made your way inside, you turned towards them. “Need anything?” Both angels shook their heads in refusal.
“No.” They said together.
“Okay. Night.” With a gentle wave, you headed inside, closing the door behind you. When you heard the muffled sounds of the duo getting settled in for the night, you pressed your ear to the door.
“I cannot believe you had them come down for all this,” Joshua said, still surprised.
“I didn’t know what else to do. I was hoping they could knock some sense back into you. Please be careful now, okay?” You heard Jeonghan’s voice say gently.
“Whatever.” You frowned, unaccustomed to Joshua’s seemingly passive and annoyed tone, waiting a moment to see if they would continue their conversation. You were hoping some of the very large gaps in your knowledge would be filled the longer you listened. However, the TV turned on low, and it became the only noise you heard beyond the door. Sighing, you made your way to the bed and crawled inside. You rested your head on the pillow, feeling a familiar bump in the fabric. Reaching your hand, you pulled out the taser you so long ago had pointed at Joshua. You quickly set it in your bedside drawer and curled up under the covers, falling asleep within minutes.
When Jeonghan heard what seemed like muffled snoring and rustling from your room, he looked at Joshua. “You want to go now?” he asked. “Stores are still open.”
Joshua looked over, an obvious hint of annoyance in his eyes. Jeonghan did not seem bothered, however, and stood up. “...Yeah,” Joshua finally relented, standing up as well. The duo tiptoed out of the apartment, careful not to wake you up as they headed into the late-night streets of Seoul.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
“Guys!” Mingyu called, his voice ringing through the dewy morning air of early morning. Minnie, Seungkwan, and Hoshi, all of whom were chatting at the front of the building, looked over to see him hurry in their direction. “I need your help.”
“With finals?” Seungkwan asked. “I don’t think so.”
“No.” Mingyu sighed. “I’m planning a birthday party.”
The collection of beaming faces made Mingyu immediately feel a boost of confidence. Minnie crossed her arms. “Did she finally talk to you?”
“We talked yesterday. I told her that I had her entire birthday planned for right after finals.” Hoshi smiled as he heard Mingyu share the news of your conversation, nodding as he listened. “I need your help.”
“Well, what do you have planned?” Hoshi asked curiously. Mingyu blinked.
“Nothing.” He beamed as he sputtered the word. When he saw his friend’s shoulders drop, Mingyu frowned a bit. “But I have some ideas. I need your help deciding what will be best.”
Despite their disappointment that Mingyu had nothing planned for a birthday that would be coming sooner rather than later, their smiles quickly returned. “Got it,” Minnie said.
“Anything you need,” Seungkwan added.
“It’ll be the best party ever!” Hoshi said, emphasizing his comment with powerful hand motions. Mingyu grinned.
“Okay. I was thinking at lunch we can-.”
“Mingyu!” His voice immediately went quiet as a female voice called behind him. When he turned around, Mina was hurrying up, smiling sweetly. “Hi everyone. Good luck with your finals today.”
“Thanks…” Minnie said. Mina blinked.
“What are you guys talking about?” She asked. “You all look happy, whatever it is.”
“Uh, nothing,” Mingyu said, smiling politely in her direction. Mina nodded. “Are you headed to class?”
“Yeah.” She said. “I thought we could go together.”
“Uh, maybe. I was just-.” As Mingyu was trying to come up with an excuse, a distant laughter perked his ears up and he looked over. Mina followed his gaze, frowning at the sight of three figures walking down the road together.
Joshua, Jeonghan and you were talking about your first final of the day, making sure that the group of you was ready. Mainly you, it seemed, as Joshua and Jeonghan were throwing quiz questions in your direction almost as fast as a baseball machine in a batting cage. You couldn’t help but break into amused laughter as their rapid-fire questions eventually melted into both of them just shouting random questions, one after another without you being able to get a word in edge-wise.
“Enough, enough.” You laughed, raising your hands to cover their mouths. “I think my head will explode at this rate!”
Jeonghan moved your hand from his lips before uttering: “Then you’re ready.”
Joshua moved your hand as well: “We’ve done all we can do.” Again, you had to laugh. As the three of you got closer, you immediately caught a glimpse of your friends, all gathered together and talking. You could tell they must have noticed you as well because they all turned to you quietly. Mina was there as well, smiling and offering you a wave. You waved back, stepping closer to the group. Joshua and Jeonghan went quiet, following behind as you gripped the strap of your bag. You had chosen to avoid people who had done nothing to harm you, all due to your feelings of self-worth. Hoshi finding you in the library was the first time that you had spoken to any of them since you and Mina had that conversation, as speaking to them meant the possibility of them asking about Mingyu. Or worse, you run into Mingyu in the process. However, taking a deep breath, you looked at Mingyu, who offered you a kind smile.
“You guys aren’t mad enough at me to come to my birthday party, right?” You finally asked. It seemed your immediate attempt at rekindling your friendship worked wonders, as your friends broke into smiles. Minnie hurried up to you, enveloping you in a hug.
“Duh! Are you kidding? I still owe you a manicure!”
“We were waiting for you to feel better so we could party plan!” Seungkwan said. Hoshi hurried up to you as well, wrapping his arms around your shoulders and pulling you into a little side hug, which you happily responded to by looping your arms around his waist.
“It’s going to be amazing! Mingyu told us he’s planning everything!”
Mingyu sighed as he felt Mina shoot a very immediate glance into his side, but she said nothing. His eyes, instead, wandered to Joshua and Jeonghan. He stared at the duo, specifically Joshua, as they watched you talk to your friends. It was as if nothing had happened, that the group of you had been talking without any breaks at all. Joshua seemed to catch Mingyu’s glance. He only returned it briefly, before glancing away.
“You can invite whoever you want,” Mingyu said quickly, alerting your attention to him. “All of us, of course. But if there’s anyone else, just let me know.”
“Okay.” You smiled. “I’ll let you know soon.” With a smile, you saw Mina pop up into your side view, taking your hand. When you looked at her, she only squeezed it.
“Your birthday is soon? That’s amazing!”
“Yeah.” You smiled a bit. “It is.”
“I hope birthday luck follows you to your finals, then.” She said.
“Thank you. Good luck.” You said. Mina nodded, before stepping closer to Mingyu and motioning down the path.
“I’m going to leave first then. Mingyu-.” She glanced at him. “Why don’t we walk together? Since our class is in the same building.” Her second attempt at walking over seemed to fluster him again, and she smiled.
“Uh…” Mingyu’s voice trailed off as he tried to think of what to say. He glanced in your direction, and you only smiled kindly. Despite that, he could see your eyes avoiding the black-haired girl at all costs.
“Mine is on the other side of campus.” You said, pointing in that direction. “We’ll meet up after.”
“Okay.” He said. “Good luck, guys.”
“Good luck!” Everyone else called before Mina and Mingyu headed down the path to their first class of the morning. You looked between your friends as they seemed to get their belongings ready. “We should probably all get going,” Minnie said.
Hoshi nodded. “Agreed.”
With another round of ‘good luck’ and ‘fighting’ thrown around, you all headed your own ways, hoping that finals would end just as quickly as they arrived.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
Mina was quiet her entire walk with Mingyu, but he didn’t really mind. Gripping his bag, he waited patiently for the door of his class to approach so he could say his goodbyes and disappear into the door, free of the awkward tension that swarmed them. However, Mina suddenly spoke up:
“Do you ever wonder what her relationship is with Joshua and Jeonghan?” Mingyu looked over in confusion. “They’re always on top of her.”
“I mean, not really,” Mingyu said. “I think they’re just friends.”
“I think Joshua likes her.” Mingyu grimaced at the thought, the brunette individual staring him down popped into his mind at the mere mention of his name. “They’d make a good match. They’re both very calm, good people.”
“Tch. As if.” Mina smiled to herself.
“Are you jealous?”
“What? No,” he said. “I just don’t think it is true.” Shaking his head, he scoffed. “Can we please change the subject?”
Mina nodded as he smiled to herself, a gardener successfully planting a new seed in her garden. “What do you have planned for her birthday?” She asked.
“Uh, not sure yet.” He said. “I was thinking of asking my dad to use our beach house on Jeju Island. We could make it a whole weekend.”
“That sounds fun. What can I do to help?” Mingyu stopped walking now, looking over at Mina.
“What?”
“I want to help. Please? I’ll do anything you need.”
“Why do you want to help?” he asked. Mina paused a minute as if she was confused by his question.
“Because she’s your friend, Mingyu.” She stated simply, offering yet another smile. “And any friend of yours is going to be a friend of mine.”
“You were just talking about her behind her back.”
“I was not!” She gasped. “I was just getting your thoughts. You know her better than I do.” She shrugged. “I just want to help. I promise.”
Mingyu sighed, pursing his lips together. “Okay.” He said. “Okay, you can help.” Mina beamed at the task, clasping her hands together.
“I won’t let you down.” She said. Checking her watch, she blinked. “Oh. We have to go or we’ll be late. Good luck, Mingyu.” Mingyu waved as Mina headed down the hallway, disappearing into one of the doors. He couldn’t help but chuckle a bit as he made his way down to the end of the hall himself, and entered the first door.
Finals would be over soon, and God he couldn’t wait to make a weekend that you could never forget.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
By the time finals week, and with it the semester, came to an end, you were all beat. Classes ended for the summer, signaling to you and your friends that a major event was about to happen. You all gathered in front of the school entrance, relief and exhaustion mixed throughout each of your faces. Even Joshua and Jeonghan seemed a bit more relieved than you had imagined.
“I’m so glad to be done!” Seungkwan stretched his arms over his head in glee.
“Yeah, now we have time to relax! Finally!” Hoshi said. You felt Minnie slide up next to you, smiling as she took your hands into hers, holding them all up in front of your faces.
“I’m thinking manicures tonight, so we’re ready for Mingyu’s party.”
“He said he was going to finalize the place today.” You smiled gently. “He’s so thoughtful to do all of this.”
“I’m sure with his wallet, it’ll be amazing! And we’re going to make you look so hot. Make sure you bring that dress again, okay?” you laughed a bit, nodding. As the two of you moved from Mingyu to the style of manicure you wanted, Mingyu was watching from his spot beside Hoshi and Seungkwan, also leading their conversation. For the past week, Mingyu was juggling finals and birthday planning like a professional acrobat. He was on phone calls between classes as often as he could to make sure that everything he wanted was set up properly, and ready to go. The last call, which he had just made, was to his father.
I want to borrow the beach house in Jeju.
Are you planning a trip?
Kind of. A friend’s birthday party.
Ah. Will Mina be there?
…She’s offered to plan with me. So…I guess so.
Good. It’s nice to know the two of you are working together. Even if it’s a friend’s birthday, make sure you take Mina somewhere nice. Just the two of you...
The last comment made Mingyu’s heartstrings tug, and he focused on watching you to make himself feel better. You were smiling as whatever Minnie told you was ridiculous enough to receive a bright, infectious smile and laugh from the both of you. You were beaming, and Mingyu was glad to see it. He wanted to see that face on your every second of the day. You turned your attention to Joshua and Jeonghan, which meant Mingyu quickly followed as well, watching as you approached the duo who were talking to one another.
“What do you think?” you asked Joshua and Jeonghan, turning your simple nails towards the duo. They looked over at you as you pointed to each one: “I’m thinking all red, but maybe something nice on the ring finger.”
“I’m thinking sparkles,” Minnie added.
Mingyu watched Joshua and Jeonghan each reach out, taking a hand into their grasp. Mingyu pouted, quickening his pace the second he could. “Hey.” He said, making you all look over. “Why don’t you ask me?”
You laughed a bit. However, before you could answer, Joshua and Jeonghan’s grip on your hands tightened, and they pulled you closer. “Oh.” You looked at them.
“We already decided,” Jeonghan said. You grinned as Joshua took your index finger, rocking it back and forth and sticking his tongue out, examining it like an artist examines a sculpture in the works with one eye closed and everything.
“Yeah, you’re not needed.” He said.
“Hey.” Mingyu pouted, crossing his arms. Taking your hands back, you shooed the duo away.
“You both are ridiculous.” You said. Turning to Mingyu, you offered him your hands next. “What do you suggest, oh wise one?” Mingyu hesitated for a second, but gently took your fingers into his hands, looking down at your nails. You felt the gentleness of his touch, yet it burned you more than the hottest rays of the afternoon sun. You had to look down at your hands as well to keep yourself calm. Regardless of everything, your heart still beat a little quicker when Mingyu was this close to you.
“I think sparkle will be nice on the ring.” He said, nodding his head. “As for the color…” he shrugged. “I always heard that a person’s favorite color matches their eyes, so…” You laughed a bit, pulling your hands away and covering your cheeks, worried their redness would become obvious.
“Get a room!” Seungkwan begged, breaking the awkward silence between the two of you. Minnie took your hand, grinning.
“I told you sparkles would be the key. Come on, let’s go before the salon gets crowded!”
“Okay.” You looked at Joshua and Jeonghan. “I’ll see you later.”
“Yeah,” Jeonghan said.
“We’ll keep them company, don’t worry!” Hoshi assured, grabbing Joshua and Jeonghan by the arms as he popped up between them. They looked down at the beaming individual, amused smiles on their faces. You nodded, waving your hand as you and Minnie headed off campus. Mingyu sighed.
“Alright.” He said, looking over the rest of the guys. “We have to start planning everything. Want to come to my place? My father’s out for the day.”
“Heck yeah!” Seungkwan grinned. Joshua and Jeonghan shared a glance, before being led off by an eager Hoshi as the group of men made their way off campus as well.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
“Awww.” Minnie sighed as she peered inside the salon. “It’s so crowded already. I knew I should have made a reservation.”
“That’s ok.” You assured. “We can always come back.”
“Well, I want to make sure our nails are done.” She said. Clicking her tongue, she looked at you. “Wait here. I’ll go see if they have any openings. If not, we’re coming back first thing tomorrow.”
“Okay.” You said behind a chuckle as Minnie charged in, the door closing behind her as a welcome bell rang. You rested against the wall, pulling your phone out of your pocket and taking the silence to scroll through your messages. It wasn’t long after that the sound of a bell rang once more, and you looked over in hopes of seeing Minnie. However, a few stores down, you saw a familiar short frame with jet-black hair and matching accessories. You blinked. “Oh…hey!” You called, and the figure looked over, seemingly with a snack hanging from his mouth. “Jihoon!”
“Ah.” Taking his bite, Jihoon hurried up to you and smiled. “Hey. Long time. Did finals finally end?”
“Yeah. We all finished today.”
“Well, good luck.” Jihoon smiled, and you quickly thanked him. “What are you doing here?”
“Well-.” You pointed to the salon, specifically, the girl talking to the worker inside. “My friend and I are hoping we can get our nails done soon.”
“Any occasion?” Jihoon asked.
“I’m having a birthday party.” You smiled.
“Ah. Happy birthday! I don’t have a gift.” You laughed a bit, shaking your head.
“No, no. You don’t need to.” You assured. Just then, your eyes widened.
You can invite whoever you want.
You immediately looked back at Jihoon after Mingyu’s comment flooded your brain, eyes beaming. “Come to my party!”
“What?” Jihoon asked.
“My friend is throwing a party for my birthday weekend.” You said. “All of the friends I told you about will be there. You should come. I promised I would introduce you.” Jihoon recalled the photo you had shown him of your friends, shifting in his spot. He put his hand in his pocket as he took a bite of his snack. You frowned, immediately getting the hesitant feeling from him. “Oh, I’m sorry. Was that to forward?”
“No,” Jihoon said. “I appreciate the invite. I just worry I’ll make the scene uncomfortable. They don’t know me.”
“Well, they’ll get to know you.” You assured. “I’d love it if you came.”
“Well-.” Jihoon didn’t seem convinced, but you suddenly motioned to the door again.
“My friend is coming out. You’ll know her too if you meet now.” As if on cue, Minnie stepped out of the store, the door closing behind her.
“Good news. They said we can-.” Minnie was interrupted by Jihoon’s presence. “Oh. Hello.” She nodded her head politely.
“Hi.” He said.
“This is Jihoon. He’s the friend I told you I had met. The one I’ve hung out with a few times.”
“Aaah.” She said. “I’m Minnie. It’s nice to meet you.” She said. Jihoon nodded.
“I’ve heard many things about you. The pleasures mine.” Despite the politeness, he still seemed a bit nervous.
“I’m trying to convince him to come to my party. Mingyu said I could invite other people.” Minnie looked over at Jihoon, who by now had long finished his snack.
“Yeah, totally,” Minnie said. “It’ll be fun!”
“Well, if you think I won’t be a burden.” He said. “Then I’ll come.”
You clapped your hands in excitement. “Okay. Once I get the final details, I’ll message you. Is that ok? It’ll be this weekend for sure.”
“I’ll keep my calendar open.” He said. You nodded, Minnie finally getting your attention back.
“Let’s go. They’ll squeeze us in if we go now. I told them it was your wedding.”
“My WHAT? Minnie.” You gasped. Jihoon laughed a bit as Minnie led you inside. You offered him one more glance before disappearing into the salon. Jihoon watched for a second, hands in his pockets as the both of you were led to the back of the salon. He smiled to himself.
However, all that could sit in the back of his mind was how much the entire party was about to change the minute he stepped into the frame.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
The weekend had arrived, Mingyu finalizing in the group chat that you would all be taking Mingyu’s plane to Jeju Island, and his father finalizing permission to use the beach house for the weekend. Mingyu, Mina, Hoshi, and Seungkwan agreed to head to the house a day early to set up. While you didn’t like the idea of Mina and Mingyu being in the house an entire day before the both of you, knowing it was Mina who suggested it, you had no way to bring it up without causing a problem.
“She’s probably jealous that you’re the one that is getting his full attention for this party,” Minnie said as both of you waited with Joshua and Jeonghan at the airport for your flight.
“She’s right,” Jeonghan said with a yawn. “Why did we have to wait until nighttime? The planes to Jeju run all day.”
“If we get there Friday night, we have all day Saturday and Sunday,” Joshua explained. “If we get on the next flight we should be there before dinner.” He looked over at you, watching you check your phone. Your brows were furrowed as you tapped constantly on your phone. “Did your friend ever message you back? Are they coming?”
“I don’t know. They said they would. But they seemed a bit hesitant. I gave him the address and the flight times. I hope he’s able to come.”
“If not, we’ll still have fun,” Minnie assured. “And we can just hang out when we’re back.”
“Right.” You agreed. It was then that Mingyu’s family pilot approached the group, signaling you all that the plane was refueled and ready for yet another trip to the island. You scanned the area one more time, but when you didn’t see Jihoon, you simply grabbed your belongings and followed your friends onto the plane.
🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶So Close Yet So Far🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
The hour-and-a-half-long trip over was filled with anxious excitement for the weekend to come. You were staring out the window with Minnie, while Joshua was reading a book and Jeonghan was closing his eyes beside him. You looked over and smiled at Joshua.
“Have you guys ever been to Jeju?” you asked. Joshua’s eyes fluttered up at you, and when he saw your smile, he immediately looked back down at his book.
“Heh.” He chuckled, shaking his head. “Not in a few years.” He said. “It’ll be nice to go back.”
“I only went a few times as a kid.” You said.
“I’ve never been. I’m so excited.” Minnie smiled. “I heard the beaches are beautiful.” You nodded in confirmation. It wasn’t long after that the plane began its descent. Joshua smiled again as he heard both you and Minnie practically squeal in glee, reverting to two children who were about to go see Santa Claus just before Christmas. He simply looked over at his friend, shaking him awake. Groggily, Jeonghan’s eyes fluttered open, his lips smacking to moisten them a bit. He groaned, sitting up straight as a hand went up to rub along his face. When he looked at Joshua, he frowned at his friend's amused chuckle.
“Really?” he asked, but Joshua only looked back down at his book.
Mingyu had a car waiting for you guys as well. He made sure to ‘pull out all the stops’. That was the wording he used when the two of you were on the phone late the previous night, anyway. The car drove from the airport along the beautiful Jeju coast. You wasted no time taking in the beautiful sights through the window once again, admiring the natural architecture. Even as the sun began to set, the glow of the orange-yellow sun spilled along the water and bounced off the mountains in a way that made it an absolutely beautiful sight to behold. Even as the car pulled up to the massive beach house resting just off the shore.
You gasped: “There’s no way his family owns this.” You said.
“Of course, they do!” Minnie said. “I’m not even the least bit shocked.” You stepped out of the car as a collection of workers hurried to the car’s trunk, scrambling to take all of your bags inside. You could see the lights were on, and smoke seemed to be bellowing from the large back deck that overlooked the ocean. You looked over at your friends.
“This is amazing!” You said. “It’s going to be the best weekend, ever!!!”
Joshua and Jeonghan smiled as they watched you and Minnie lead the way to the front door. When you walked in, your eyes scanned the enormous open-concept living room and dining room, disconnected only by a rise in the platform. You looked around as you stepped inside, eyeing what seemed to be the door to the back porch. Only the screen door was closed, so you could immediately hear laughter and music coming from the back. “This is incredible.” You said. When you turned to Joshua and Jeonghan, you saw they simply stroll in, the looks on their faces not nearly as impressed as yours. “Have you ever seen a house so massive?”
“And this is just a beach house!” Minnie added.
“It’s lovely,” Joshua said simply. “A bit smaller than ours, though.” You blinked, staring at Minnie with shocked expressions.
“Why didn’t we go to your house for her birthday, then?” Minnie asked playfully.
“Because she doesn’t like us,” Jeonghan said. You laughed a bit before you and Minnie hurried to examine the kitchen. Joshua looked over at Jeonghan, who simply shrugged. “What? I’m right.”
The commotion at the front of the house seemed to alert the back, as the screen door finally opened. You looked over to see Mingyu and Seungkwan poke their heads in. Mingyu’s face, already holding an enormous smile, got bigger as he hurried inside.
“There you are!” he shouted. “Was the flight safe and everything?”
“Yeah.” You said. “Mingyu this house is amazing!”
“Aha, you think so?” Mingyu’s cheeks tinted a bit pink. He immediately passed the both of you drinks. “I’m almost done cooking. You’re just in time.” When he caught Joshua and Jeonghan stumbling in, he motioned to them too. “Come on.”
You shuffled outside, immediately being hit with the warm smell of meats being grilled on the barbecue. You saw Hoshi and Mina standing over it, drinks in hand as they chatted. When they looked over, Hoshi screamed in excitement at your arrival, hurrying to hug Minnie. When you saw Mina, she hurried up to you, enveloping you in her hug.
“You’re all here! I hope the trip was good!” She smiled. “We couldn’t wait for you to get here! Mingyu and I have been waiting.” The way she emphasized her words made you pursed your lips.
“Okay…” That was all you could respond with. She led you to the grill, which was still steaming. “Mingyu! Hurry and turn this before they burn!” She called. “He’s been cooking for us since we got here. He’s such a good cook. I’m glad I got to learn another new thing about him.” Mingyu hurried between the two of you, reaching out and taking the tongs to flip the meat over. You smiled up at him, and he eagerly returned it.
“Dinner will be ready soon, so settle in and drink up. I have your bags being taken up to your room already.” You nodded, finally opening your drink and taking a sip.
Though a bit short with your arrival, the night was already going off without a hitch. You were all sitting around a fire pit, laughing and drinking as the food finished cooking. Mingyu was sitting next to you, quick to do so when he saw two particularly pesky individuals slide up beside you. You took a sip of your drink, watching as Mingyu got up one last time to check the food.
“I think it’s done.” He said to a sea of applause and cheers. Just as he turned off the grill, one of the house workers hurried to the back door, alerting Mingyu’s attention.
“Sir.” He said. “It seems another guest has arrived.” Mingyu immediately looked at you, seeing your face break out into a big and excited smile. Mingyu nodded.
“Let him in, then.” He said. “He’s just in time for dinner.” As the man nodded his head, heading back to the front with a bow, Mingyu turned to Hoshi. “Hyung, can you go get us an extra plate inside for him?”
“Right-o!” He grinned, standing up and heading inside. You stood up as well, ready to eagerly greet and introduce Jihoon to the rest of the group. You were excited that he would have a few more friends in your circle of very kind individuals.
“Alright. Let’s plate these bad boys up.” Mingyu grinned, beginning to set all of the meat on a plate. The boys hurried over to lend him a hand, holding different plates for Mingyu to organize all of the food on, while you and Minnie sat side by side now, drinking together and watching.
“This is going to be so nice,” Minnie said, looking at you. You nodded in agreement. The feeling of the cool sea breeze in your air, the tickle of the salt water fluttering up to your nose. And the entire weekend with your friends. An entire event is dedicated to you, organized by the one person who was the most important to you. The weekend had just started, and you couldn’t be happier.
The sound of a plate dropping in the kitchen alerted all of you, making your eyes all focus on the door. You felt hands on your shoulders, immediately looking up to see Joshua and Jeonghan at your side, eyes on the door in hopes of seeing what the noise was from. Mingyu stepped forward as well.
The sound of a plate dropping in the kitchen alerted all of you, making your eyes all focus on the door. You felt hands on your shoulders, immediately looking up to see Joshua and Jeonghan at your side, eyes on the door in hopes of seeing what the noise was from.
"Do you sense that?" Joshua whispered. Jeonghan nodded, their hands on your shoulders remaining firm and protective. You were just about to open your mouth and ask for more clarification when Mingyu stepped forward as well. You could immediately tell the sudden noise spooked him, as his eyes were wide in surprise and his cheeks suddenly devoid of color. However, he managed to muster up enough courage to call: “Hoshi-Hyung?”
No response. Seungkwan called: “Soonyoung-Hyung?”
You finally rose from your spot around the fire pit. “Guess I’ll go check since everyone is being so cryptic.” You said, both you and Minnie heading inside, closing the screen door behind you. The men followed suit, poking their heads in to see. You immediately saw Hoshi, standing in the kitchen before a shattered plate, staring at the guest that had just arrived.
Hoshi shook his head as if he couldn’t believe who it was. “Woozi?” he asked, tilting his head. You immediately looked over when you heard that familiar nickname, and a gentle smile graced Jihoon’s face as he nodded.
“Hey, Hoshi.”
