⋆ ࣪.      ⁺⑅     ⋰˚     *.゚    .˳⁺⁎˚     ˚⁎⁺˳ .    ༺ ˖
jess has always been the bad boy of stars hollow since he moved. that is a fact. and when he meets you it completely throws him off because how can someone be so happy and sweet, and so beautiful at the same time?
obviously he’s not known for being optimistic… so when you meet him while working at luke’s, you try to make it your personal mission to have jess smile at least once a shift
luke thinks it’s great that you two have to work together because jess badly needs a good influence, and you’ve known luke since you were young so you’re completely and entirely trusted with the shop when luke goes fishing and whatever
jess is astounded
and then the way you treat the customers
even kirk likes you- he thinks you’re a wonderful break from whatever the hell luke’s attitude is
you’ve memorized everyone’s regular orders and never fail to serve someone without a smile on your face
at first it kinda pissed jess off tbh because he thinks it’s an act and not genuine
but as he gets to know you better he realizes that you’re just a really lovely sunshiney person no matter what, and hey, maybe you’re rubbing off on him a bit after all
one time he leaves his book at the counter while he’s on a break and you run up to the apartment to give it to him, even though there’s a backlog of customers
“you forgot your book downstairs”
he kind of stares at you, a smile creeping up
“thanks”
“you’re welcome”
more awkward pauses
“you should really use a bookmark, you know, it’s bad for the pages if you bend them like that”
“you read?”
“yeah. you should really start a new book, though. that one had a super unsatisfying ending”
“oh yeah?”
that’s when everything changes for him
the next shift he comes to work on your day off and you’ve left him a small package beside the coffee machine with his name in cursive on it
it’s a book
your handwriting is inside the front cover with a little note to him
‘for jess, this is my favorite book, don’t bend the pages please :)’
and then there’s a homemade bookmark
from then on you guys start trading books
and he starts smiling at you more
you guys get closer and more attached, working perfectly in sync at the diner- you’ll have the fries done at the same time he’s grilled a burger, so that everything stays warm for the customers
jess also starts doing more little things for you: wiping down the counter, helping clean up so you can go home earlier, giving you all the tips in the tip jar even though technically he deserves half
until one day you come into work late, eyes rimmed with red, furiously blinking tears away
he’s never seen you like this, so obviously he has to fix it
because you’re y/n l/n. you’re the sunshine of stars hollow
lorelai and rory are there, and so he asks lorelai to help man the coffee
jess takes you upstairs to his room, away from prying eyes, and asks you what’s wrong, cause he can tell
you just burst into tears
“hey hey hey, you’re okay, what’s wrong?”
cue protective jess.
through the tears you tell him how you’re overwhelmed with school, homework, the pressure to get into a good university, and how you feel like you’re supposed to handle it all by yourself
jess knows it’s not the time for wisecracks
so he wipes away the tears from your cheeks and listens as you talk
when you’ve calmed down, you hug him as a thank you
jess has never really been hugged before. luke and his mom aren’t very affectionate, especially physically
when you finally pull away, his touch lingers
and you kiss him on the cheek very quickly
that’s when jess knows you’re the one
you’ll always be his sunshine, even through both of your worst moments
and he knows he’s going to spend the rest of his life with you, and devote his days to hearing you laugh
but that’s a story for another time
i hope you like this!! thanks so much for requesting, sorry if this got a bit long or if it’s not what you're looking for. likes and reblogs are appreciated! <33

Pop of Colour
Tumblr media
Flufftober, October 9th
Female reader x Jess Mariano
Summary: Jess asks you paint his nails
Warnings: none
A/n: this is the first Gilmore Girls fic I've written, I hope it's good! Oh, and this is ooc but Jess is my sweet baby, so hush and read! ...only if you want to <3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jess is sitting on your bed, leaning against your headboard with one of your pillows in his lap. He watches as you screw the top back on your nail polish. He watched you paint your nails the whole time.
He's always been interested in painted nails and always wished he could have his colorful as well. But he knows people will point it out and they'll make fun of him, as his mom had always told him, even when she was drunk or high as a kite. All her boyfriends and husbands had made it very clear that boys should never have painted nails or wear any makeup when Jess once came back home from school after coloring his nails with markers at school.
"You okay, Jess?" You ask him, noticing his eyes trained on your hands. "Um, yeah, sorry" he looks up at your face.
After a pause he opened his mouth again, "I-I was wonderin if you could, uh, paint...my nails? please?" He knows that he's not good at asking for things or asking about stuff, but he's been trying since you guys started dating.
"Oh, yeah, of course, hun. Come over here" You softly smile and nod over to the other chair with a sweater draped over the back of it.
He blinks for a second, surprised that you said yes, and puts your pillow back. He climbs off the bed and sits down on the chair. You pull out your small basket with nail polish and sit on your chair, holding it out to him.
"You can choose whatever colour you want," You tell him and he takes the basket from you.
He gently rummages through the different colours and pulls a dark red one out. He hesitantly hands it to you and places the basket on your desk.
You take it from Jess and shake it for a couple seconds. "Good choice" You twist the top open. "Okay, place your left hand on the desk and keep it still," You tell him. He nods, obliging to the order. He places his left hand on the wood surface.
As you paint his nails, his eyes are focused on the strokes of the small brush. Every time you dip the brush back into the polish and start on the next nail, he feels the coolness of the strong smelling dyed chemical.
"Aaand...done" you twist the top back onto the bottle and put it with the rest of them.
Jess looks down at both of his hands. A smile perks up on his face when he sees the shiny polish on his nails.
"You like?" You ask, seeing the smile on his face. "I love 'em...thank you" He answers, still working on not being closed off with his thoughts and emotions.
"Of course, any time. Now, just for the next five minutes, keep your hands still, especially the one I just painted, to make sure nothing smudges" You put the basket away before leaning against the desk.
"But what if I wanted to kiss you?" Jess smirks, trying to put his 'bad boy' image back up. "Hmm, cute" You smirk back, knowing exactly what he's trying to do.
"You'll have to wait, for now, this'll have to suffice" You lean down and kiss his forehead.
"Oh, come on, not even a real kiss" He pouts, something that's new for him, but he makes sure to only do it in front of you. He almost slipped up in front of Luke after he had a nightmare one night, and it was a complete disaster in his mind.
"Nope, you, baby, are gonna have to wait" You playfully wink, making him groan. The only good thing out of your teasing is now he knows what it's like to have painted nails like he's always wanted without someone making fun of him (at least right now at least), And if Luke brings up how his nail colour changed, no he doesn't.
I just had a random thought that I think is so cute 🥰 could you do Jess messing with the reader by pulling on her belt loops as a way of flirting. Like he’d do it when she’s not expecting it and she tries to not show how much she likes it but Jess already knows 🤭
pairings! jess mariano x fem reader
warnings! so. much. fluff. jess being a dork.
word count! literally so short. not even 500😭
JESS MARIANO had always been a bit of a flirt with girls that were worth his while. There was a never ending obsession with making these girls flustered. He was practically addicted to the attention of girls nearly waving their underwear  at him — whether he liked it or not. Yet with his girlfriend, he had a special move that never failed to make her heart race. Whenever they were together, he would sneak up behind her and pull on the belt loops of her jeans, giving her a playful tug.
At first, his girlfriend would try to ignore it, pretending that it didn't bother her. But secretly, she loved the way he flirted with her. She loved the way his hands felt on her hips and the way his touch sent shivers down her spine. Jess had a severe lack of interest in any PDA before he met her… but his hands were always fumbling with her belt loops.
One day, they were walking through Stars Hollow, and Jess snuck up behind her, giving her belt loops a gentle tug. She turned around, a smile spreading across her face, and he grinned back at her.
"I know you like it," he said, giving her another tug as if it was nothing. She laughed, leaning into him. "Maybe I do," she admitted. "But you're lucky I love you, or I might have to punch you for that."
Jess chuckled, pulling her closer to him. "I think you secretly love it," he teased, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
His girlfriend rolled her eyes, but she couldn't hide the smile on her face. "You're such a dork," she said, wrapping her arms around him.
Jess grinned, pulling her in for a kiss. As they walked through town, hand in hand, he couldn't help but feel grateful for this girl who loved him, quirks and all.
And as for the belt loop trick, well, he knew he'd never stop using it. It was just one of the many little ways he showed his love for her.
He makes me laugh (Part 3)
pairings: Jess Mariano x fem! Reader
warnings: language(?), pregnant teen reader, insecurities, fight, not proofread!
Words: 2064
Author’s note: Hi friends! It’s been a while but here is the next part of the story again i am so sorry for taking this long to finish it. I hope you’re life has been doing great since we’ve last chatted. I hope you enjoy the story, i know it’s not that good but i will try harder on the next part!
Tumblr media
You don’t even care about the fight anymore, it was so stupid anyways.
You’d just gotten to Luke’s after your shift at Doose’s market, when you and Jess started arguing. Arguments these days consisted of the same thing, he was jealous of your friendship with Dean and you were jealous of his friendship with Rory. You both just couldn’t seem to understand that both of you guys were just friends with the other person. Sometimes there’d even been times when Rory and Dean were involved themselves, this was one of those times. You found Jess and Rory upstairs too close for your comfort. They weren’t doing anything, you’d just already been having a bad day and this irked you. Jess told you there was nothing going on, but you didn’t care, honestly all you wanted at the moment was for her to get out so you could be with Jess. So when Rory piped in to also confirm nothing had been going on you snapped at her and asked her if she’d like if you were that close to Dean, alone in a closed room, when she didn’t respond you told her to get out. Jess told you that you were being mean and that if she was leaving he was too, because ‘you were being over dramatic about nothing’. You were too mad to follow after him and stayed upstairs. After a couple of minutes you started to cry. When you calmed down a little you didn’t feel like being upstairs anymore and decided you wanted to go to your apartment, lay down and just forget the whole day even happened and deal with it tomorrow. Unfortunately Luke saw that your face was all puffy and told you to sit down. You did as you were told and tried to stay calm but as soon as Luke asked if you were okay you started crying all over again. Luke being Luke told everyone to get out and told you to tell him everything. You tried to tell him it was nothing, just pregnancy hormones. He told you that he knew you were lying because he saw Jess leave angrily.
“So he did leave with her huh?” You wiped away your tears and tried breathing normally again, “who? Rory? No, Jess told her something and walked away from her.” You nodded your head and you started to feel guilty. “She’s a nice girl, Rory. I don’t know why I'm so jealous of her, but I am. I don’t know what it is but I know she likes Jess and I know she’s with Dean but she likes him, Luke, I know she does. I just need to know if Jess feels the same, but all he says is that they’re just friends but it's not reassuring to me. I feel so stupid. This whole thing makes me feel stupid.” You sigh loudly and try to laugh everything off. “How do you know she likes him? What if you’re wrong?” You shake your head at Luke, “I’m not. She looks at Jess the same way she used to look at Dean, I barely noticed the change recently. I saw them talking on the bench in the square one day while I was at work, and I felt so incredibly jealous, I mean I’d felt jealous before, but this time it was different and I couldn’t really tell why at first until I realized she was looking at Jess the same way I do. That kind of hurt and I tried not to make a big deal of it, but I couldn't figure out if Jess was looking at her differently or not. And that’s when I really hurt my own feelings.” Luke looks at you sympathetically, and tries to give you a small smile, “Is that what you were fighting about today? Is that what you usually fight about?” You nod your head and look away, “Sort of. Sometimes it’s about Dean. Jess started getting real jealous of Dean when I started working at the market, and we usually had arguments about him first actually, then one day I started one about Rory and it’s just a back and forth thing, today it was about Rory. I came here after work and went upstairs and there she was just in love with my boyfriend and I snapped and told her to get out. Jess told me I was being mean and left with her.”
You pause for only a second, in case Luke wanted to say something, but he didn’t, he stayed quiet and let you continue. But you felt as if you were spiraling by now, and you wish he would’ve just stopped you. “Who knows maybe he does like her. Oh crap what if he does? I love him, Luke. He can’t like her. I can’t lose him, and I can't have the only thing in common that we have be this baby.” Luke wraps an arm around you and hugs you, “You aren’t losing him, Jess loves you way more than you realize. That’s for certain. And i’ll tell you how I know, Jess wouldn’t start arguments about Dean, if he no longer had feelings for you. Jess is a troublemaker, but he’s not the kind to go out looking for a fight. He just doesn’t know how to really express himself.” You nod again and cross you arms over your chest, “I don’t know, I just want him to reassure me, everytime we fight about Rory he just tells me I’m looking too into things, or I’m imagining things, and it makes me feel like I’m going crazy.” Luke sighs loudly, stands up and crosses his arms over his chest, “Look, you both need to communicate with each other, you both have reasons of your own of why you are jealous of Rory and Dean. Stop fighting and listen to each other. You both will continue to fight about this until you talk. Don’t walk away from each other and don’t stop talking until everything is resolved. I would hate to see something like this break you guys up especially with a baby on the way. Just fix everything, and stop fighting, you’re supposed to be excited right now, you get to find out the sex of the baby in a couple of days, look forward to that kiddo.” You start to bite at the inside of your cheek, Luke is right, you shouldn’t be arguing with Jess right now, instead you should be sorting out the last couple of details of your gender reveal party. “Okay. If you see Jess, will you tell him that I’m at my apartment?” He nods and you give him a small thanks before grabbing your things and leaving.
When you get to your apartment you decide that you need to distract yourself before Jess comes, if he does anyways. Cooking is the first thing that comes to your mind. If Jess shows up and things don’t go so great at least you’d have food to stress eat afterwards, but if things are resolved then the both of you could have a nice dinner together. You’re still thinking about what Luke said and hope Jess comes home soon so you aren’t overthinking anything.
Jess arrives at the apartment an hour after you did. You were completely immersed in cooking that you didn’t hear the door open, however you could definitely hear the door slamming shut. You turn down the stove heat and turn around, taking a deep breath before facing Jess. You take a few steps away from the stove when Jess comes into view. You try to greet Jess but immediately you are taken aback as Jess grabs the sides on your face and kisses you passionately. Confused with his actions you hardly kiss back, as Jess pulls away he mutters a quick apology.
“I thought you were mad at me?” You ask him, he shakes his head, “I’m not. I mean I was but I’m not anymore. I’m so sorry.” You wrap your arms around Jess and tell him you’re sorry too. “We need to talk about it though, we can’t just kiss, say some sorrys and expect the problem to just go away. We have to work on this, I don’t want to argue anymore, it’s so tiring.” You let go of Jess and take a step back. “I don’t want to argue anymore either, so yeah let’s talk.” You give him a small smile and tell him to sit at the table while you turn off the stove. Once off you make your way to the table as well and take a seat. It’s quiet for a couple of seconds before Jess starts the conversation.
“Rory is my friend. I do not have feelings for her nor have I had feelings for her.” You nod your head, you want to retaliate with something but you wouldn’t be resolving anything. “Okay, I believe you. But Rory has feelings for you.” Jess bites his lip and slumps down in his chair, “Yeah I know.” You furrow your brows at him and stay quiet so he can continue. “After our argument today when we left Luke’s, I asked her if there was any way you were just overthinking and if it was true if she had feelings and she stayed silent so i just walked away from her. I swear I never knew.” You feel relief after he says this, of course not completely because you were right Rory did have feelings for Jess, but Jess didn’t know until today. “You don’t like her?” Jess immediately shakes his head, “No I don't. I do, however, like you. Love you even.” You smiled at Jess and reached for his hand that was on his table. “I love you too.”
“I want you to know that Dean and I are just friends too. And I'm more than positive he is completely in love with Rory.” Jess nods and squeezes your hand, “okay”
You stand up from your chair and walk over to Jess before placing your hands on his face and bending down to kiss him, “I’m sorry for all of the arguments I started” Jess stands up and wraps his arms around you, “I’m sorry for all the arguments I started.” You hug each other and stay wrapped in each other’s arms for a few seconds before Jess asks you what you were cooking before and if you needed help cooking anything else. You tell him you’re making soup and sandwiches and to get the bread and other sandwich things out as you finish the soup.
It felt nice to move on from the arguments and to feel reassured. You hope he feels the same way.
“So the party is in two days, what do we still need to plan?” Jess speaks up, “oh! Um we still need to tell sookie what cake flavor we were wanting, she already has the envelope with the gender. Um Lorelai says coordinating outfits would be cute, so I thought we could go shopping for that tomorrow but if you don’t like the coordinating idea that’s okay! We also need to oh, I think that’s it actually.” Jess nods in acknowledgment, “what about carrot cake, you love carrot cake,” you smile brightly at him, “i think we should do confetti, your favorite!” He shakes he head in protest, “no its makes more sense, carrot cake is not a gender reveal cake, let’s do confetti!” Jess smiles at you brightly, “okay, let’s do it.”
When you finish your food, Jess is the one to start on the dishes, you quickly grab a towel and start drying and putting away the clean ones. The rest of the night goes by quickly and soon enough you’re both in bed ready to fall asleep in each others arms.
“I hope we have a girl.” Jess whispers to you, you smile at the thought of Jess being a girl dad. “I hope its a boy, so he’s just like you, handsome, and funny,” Jess smiles and even though its dark you know he’s turning red at the comment. “I think they’ll be perfect boy or girl though, and well loved by us both.” Jess agrees and kisses your cheek before saying good night. You whisper a good night back before falling fast asleep.
Being a girl is: wanting to go to bed early but deciding to just get on tumblr/wattpad/Ao3 for a little bit and then end up finding a fic series that you really like and read until well past your usual bedtime then keeping on because it’s already past your bedtime. Then being mad when you wake up in the morning because you overslept your timer.
warning(s): smut and language
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aftercare
Aftercare king
I feel like In his younger years he didn’t really know much about it I mean come on we all knew he was a man whore back than
he would crack you open some water and be on his way before you fell asleep
or fuck you to sleep and leave before you woke up
but he’s gotten better!
gets you a warm rag to wipe you up would run you a bath occasionally but Jess is a little arrogant bitch so he’s not gonna admit that he wants to cuddle with you for a lot of little while 🙄
Body Part
His favorite body part on you is your face even in his younger years jess didn’t base his sole existence off sex he loves to lay a hand on your cheek or kiss your forehead
But In all honesty
Jess is an ass man
There I said it.
His favorite part on himself other than his hair is his hair. he likes when you run your fingers through it and normal time but especially after sex
he’d never say it to your face though it’s Jess come on Y/n 🙄
he’s into hair pulling
pull his hair see what muffled sounds you can get out of him 🙏🏽
because he’s definitely not just going to let it spur out and let you hear them.
bratty jess?
the answer is yes.
Cum
He likes to cum either on your ass or inside you that’s just his preference.
he’s also not against in your mouth when you suck him off
I feel like he’s not really throwing a bitch fit rather you spit or swallow
kiss him and make him taste himself and feels a certain way ;)
but going back to inside you :)
he likes when you clench around him and kinda ground him in a way? Like bringing him back to reality in the best way possible
he’s in love with you either way 🤸🏾‍♀️
Dirty Secret
Jess Mariano is a switch.
Experience
like I said he was a man whore even though it’s behind him now he was a whore.
He has plenty experience on his belt
Also my man is a book reader
You can’t tell me that he hasn’t read smut like let’s be serious for a second
just know that Jess can get around and you’re always gonna finish with him 😊
Favorite Position
Rocking horse and spooning.
Jess is an eye contact person
Just intensely staring at you as he rubs circles on your puffy clit or Keeps running his thumb over your red tip
if you can hold up with his eyes than you might just have him tucked under your thumb
If not than expect him to tease the fuck at out of you and result into shit like fucking you in a mirror forcing you to watch
Goofy
I feel like other than like a sarcastic remark and a couple smirks Jess isn’t really that goofy?
I don’t think Jess is a sunshine/silly character anyways so, there’s that
Hair
He keeps himself trimmed not completely bald but not where to point where he’s uncomfortable or scratching you with it
He doesn’t really care all that much about body hair?
Like it would go like this;
“We can’t, I haven’t shaved.”
“…so?” 🧍🏽🍽️
Intimacy
There’s a lot of things that Jess is but naive however is not one.
when you want to get intimate Jess catches your drift pretty quick
But on a serious not I feel like Jess would like no shit be so sweet sometimes
Like starting up at you as he kiss up your legs to your abdomen and chest
Prepping kissed everywhere kiss rolls, beauty marks, freckles, your back and shoulders, dimples, everything.
Body worship bae
Jack off
He doesn’t do it a lot anymore? He has you and once again he’s never based his whole being off sex intake
but my man is a college student 🙏🏽
and you both have busy schedules so he might have to do what he has to to take his mind off his exam stress
if you catch him!?
please like make him finish in front of you it’d make him so hot and bothered
neither of you would go to class
Kink
Hair pulling; hair pulling is a probably a big key to Jess’s subby side
he is a switch and I’ll die on that hill.
Markings; he’d be a little shit about markings hickeys, hand marks, kiss prints, anything. leave scratches down his back and hickeys one his neck where people can see? he’s fucking whipped and will be back for more when they fade.
Overstimulation.
I rest my case your honor.
Location
your ass or your mouth.
Motivation
When you wear tighter clothes that shows off your figure he loses all sense he has come to have and will shamelessly stare
Also cock warming.
You’re helping him study and he can’t focus? It’s almost like a game
The more flash cards he can go through and get right than the more you move
if he gets more than enough wrong you’ll basically just torture him and sit there as he struggles to hold in his groans
No
Hurting each other other than like a couple smacks on the ass from either parties Jess isn’t into the pain thing at all
Oral
he doesn’t mind a good blowjob
oral fixation go brrr
Place
Risky
Jess is all about the adrenaline he gets off the risky feeling of being caught
Janitors closet type beat
Quickie
Once again y’all are college students
You eat, breathe, and live quickies.
Risk
yes 😈
The amount of places y’all have been in is very questionable
a dressing room 😏
restaurant family bathroom 😝
the janitors closet 🤨
the library 😟
Sext
it’s literally his specialty
“rubbing those pretty legs together thinking about me in the middle of them”
All while your in class
LIEK
sir enough. 🙏🏽
Toys
Not the biggest fan
only toy he was really keen on was something like vibrator underwear
but that’s a story for another day
Unfair
Depending on your personality is rather where you can keep up with Jess or not
because he’s a very big fucking tease
If you can than your best bet is to not let him talk like once you start keep going and he doesn’t have a chance like zero chance
Stare at him dead in his eyes maybe look at lips for a little bit and keep sweet talking him and he’s bending to your will
Volume
you have to really pull the noises out of this one
he’s not letting them slip easy
Wild Card
Once you were giving Jess head he was already overstimulated maybe on his third or forth orgasm and the last one you gave him practically had him unconscious
For the rest of the night he was clinging and whiny wanting you close
That’s been the biggest sun moment you’ve seen in Jess your whole relationship
X ray
6.5 to 7 inches
It gets him around but you’re also not dying splitting in half
Yes
Put your fingers in mouth
Don’t break eye contact as he licks around your digits
you two are at it like fucking rabbits
Zzz
Unless you’ve been at it for a while Jess is usually the one falling asleep after you
he’d run shapes on your hip kiss your forehead when your eyes close and then finally be on his way
The bus ride down was long, and it only got worse as 1-year-old Caroline woke up from her nap and decided to let everyone know of the inconvenience. Finally after the long months of working and saving up she had enough to move to Stars Hollow, unlike Jess who had a parent to send them and an uncle to stay with, she saved up and made it happen. She wanted Caroline to be around her father, and she wanted to be close to Jess.
And Y/n’s always loved the idea of a small town, a place where you felt safe, a place she would feel safe raising her child in, a place that wasn’t $2,500 a month for a closet. Here she could give her daughter a lot more, here she would have a support system in Jess and Luke. Unlike what her parents would give her.
By this point in the bus route it was only the mother and daughter and a couple strays, she saw the messy haired boy sitting on a park bench close to the bus stop, of course he had his nose in a book. She started packing up Caroline’s stuff, tucking her blanket and toys in the basket of the stroller.
When she got to the bus doors, Jess quickly made his way to help her lift the stroller down the steps, when the stroller was once again on the ground Jess squats down getting face to face with his little girl, “Hey, Care!” “Daddy!” He lifted her up by her armpits. When the little girl was out of her seat and in her dad’s arms, her mom stacked their bags on the seat.
“Hi! You’re so big! Really she is. She’s growing up so fast.” “Well she can walk way more stable now. No more scaring, mommy that you’ll fall if I look away for a second.” She says the last sentence in baby voice while she tickles the girl’s belly to make her giggle and their foreheads to rest on each other’s.
“So you gonna show us around?!” “‘Around’?” They continued their walk around the gazebo area, walking towards Luke’s.
“This is it, that's the record shop, that’s the bookstore, that's Luke’s, and that’s all you need to know.” “Well where’s the bank, I might need to rob it later.” “You’ll find a job. And if you don’t then work at Luke’s, he could do with the time off then maybe he’d get off everyone’s backs.” “He’s probably stressed with you always causing trouble.” “Me? Trouble? Nooo, I’m a peach.”
-
Jess had the baby today since Y/n was off to find a job, her first stop was the most promising. Luke let her know that a friend of his needed extra staff at their Inn for an event that was coming up, someone who could be an assistant of sorts. So after wearing her most capable looking top, and best fitting jeans. She kissed Caroline’s check and yelled goodbye to Luke and Jess as she began her walk.
When she walked inside she saw a man at the front desk on the phone. Waiting to ask for directions, she hung around the man’s desk, busying herself with some pamphlet. She couldn't help but listen to the man’s angry English in his french accent.
Suddenly he hung up the phone and got back to writing whatever he was writing, without looking up and with an annoyed tone said, “Yes?” “I was looking for Lorelei, I’m here for-” “The assistant job, yes.. Follow me.” He walked quickly to wherever it was they were going, mumbling along the way, “Of course, an assistant. Just what we need around here. Not like I don’t already do most of the work around here.”
He opened the door for them, it ended up being the kitchen they were now in. A tall woman holding a to-go coffee cup that said ‘Luke’s’ on it and a shorter woman in an apron fighting with a scruffy man about vegetables, which look to be parsnips.
“The mini-you is here.” “One little comment, Micheal. I’m not saying you’re incapable. I just want more help with organising events so I focus on planning!” “Whatever.” Turning on his heels, Micheal walked out the doors making his way back to his desk.
“So you’ve met Micheal! Sorry, we usually don’t let him around the new people but we're a little short-staffed. Let’s head to the dining room.”
They sat down at a table in the dining room, Lorelei asked all the important questions, and Y/n was perfect, now she was just asking the things she’ll tell Sookie later when the woman asks about the new hire.
Taking a sip of her sixth coffee this morning Lorelei asked, “So, are you new to town? I haven’t seen you around before.” The girl was stirring milk into her second coffee as she responded, “Yeah, I am. I just moved here with my um- my daughter, closer to her dad so…”
Since it was of course the time most adults got horrified, thought she was a bad kid, and though she didn’t get that vibe from Lorelei, it was at least bound to shock her. “You’re daughter? How old are you? Wait- I know, it’s on your resume. I mean- I’m, deja vu y’know? Abba did say ‘the history books on the shelf are always repeating themselves’.”
She must have seen the confused look on the young girl and explained, “I had my daughter when I was sixteen.. And came here to get a job, so just getting major deja vu. Well then, since I know what you’re going through, I won’t put you through the short mental torture of waiting for a call I was gonna do and just tell you you got the job.” “Oh, thank you! I really need this, I can’t thank you enough.” “Just change her name to Lorelei and we’ll call it even.” “deal.” Those two would get along great, much to Luke’s misfortune.
-
Y/n sat at the counter with Caroline in front of her sitting on the counter while she played with her mother’s hair. Jess was filling up cups of coffee and serving customers while he listened to Y/n’s words.
“So until you go back to school, you’ll have Caroline during the day here and when I’m done work I’ll take her.” “No, you’ll never have a break. After work you go to your house, relax then grab her after dinner.”
Jess may have this ‘I only care about myself’ attitude but that never included Caroline and Y/n, he’d kill for either of them at any given moment. He always put them first. If thought Y/n needed a break, she was getting a break whether she wanted it or not.
Just as the girl was going to thank him she was interrupted by another girl around their age coming to sit down at the counter, two over from her.
“I have the book you lent me.” She said, unknowingly interrupting the conversation since Jess was facing the coffee machine to make a new batch when she sat down. “Oh, thanks.” He muttered, notably not turning to face her.
On the inside Jess felt guilty. Why did he feel guilty? He didn’t do anything, he and Y/n weren’t together, nevermind the fact that all he did was lend Rory a book. As friends. Because they’re friends. But nonetheless it almost felt like cheating. Jess and Y/n may not be together officially but that didn’t mean that they both didn’t love each other. And not just because they were the parents to a beautiful little girl. Jess had always wanted more, he’d let the girl know that more than a handful of times, and she let him know it wasn’t unrequited, yet something always came between them.
You’d think having a baby together would bring them closer, and in some ways it did; they trusted each other more. But they also fought more and being the dumb teenagers they were, they didn’t have the emotional ability to move past that and build the relationship they both wanted. And then when they felt they were ready to, Jess was sent to live with his uncle. Just another fork in the road. But now they were living in the same town and had a good system, and people to support them. It was the perfect time, everything was going right, they could feel all the feelings that never really left resurfacing.
“Okay, I have to get to work. You’ve got her?” “Yeah.” “Bye, baby, I love you. I’ll see you in a little bit, but you get to spend all day with daddy.” “Bye-bye, mommy!”
She said bye to Jess after she walked around the counter and handed him Caroline, muttering a small ‘go see, daddy’ that Rory most definitely heard.
When the door finally chimed shut Rory shot up to follow Jess to the table he was now setting Caroline up at. She watched his gentle movements as he readjusts her shirt and places crayons and paper in front of her, which she got right into scriballing away.
“She’s yours?” “Yeah.” “.. So that girl is your girlfri-" "I’ve got work to do.”
-
The warm atmosphere of the dinner is a stark contrast to the cold winter air. Noticing Jess and Caroline are nowhere to be seen she assumes they were upstairs and makes her way up the stairs. Half-way up the flight of stairs she could hear her little girl’s loud giggles. She quietly opens the door to see Jess holding Caroline above his head, as if she was flying.
When she first got pregnant everyone told her Jess wouldn’t be a good dad, that she can’t rely on him for anything. God were they wrong. She doesn’t think it’s possible for her baby to have a better person as a dad. She sadly doesn’t get to watch the scene for much longer as she’s spotted by little Caroline.
“Mommy! I see daddy ‘morrow?” “Yes, you get to be with daddy all day tomorrow too.” “Yay!”
As the conversation between them goes on, Jess lets his little girl plant her feet back on the ground and starts collecting some things she’ll need during the night before she comes back here tomorrow, he then starts getting Caroline’s shoes on her feet. While Y/n sits on the couch next to their little girl.
“So who was that girl this morning?” “Who?”
Jess always did this, it was a tell tale sign that he didn’t want to talk about it, but that’s never stopped Y/n before. “You know who.” Of course having to be difficult, Jess gives her a fake confused look, as if he’s never met another girl in his life.
“The one returning your book.” “Oh, that girl.” “Yeah, that girl.” “She’s nobody.” “So you just lend books to ‘nobody’s now?” “Care, where’s Mr.Wiggle?” The girl lets out a gasp and reaches out for Jess to help her off the couch, when he does she runs into the closet where she previously hid while playing hide and seek a couple hours earlier.
“What? Don’t want Care to hear about her new step-mom?” “Don’t call her that.” “What? Care? Only you can call her that?” “No, don’t call Rory Care’s ‘step-mom’.” “Rory! I get her name!”
Jess was a quiet guy, but not this quiet, especially not with Y/n. He didn’t want to talk about Rory, maybe because it was weird talking about another girl with your baby momma. And yes it was weird for Y/n too, but for a completely different reason, she assumes. She liked Jess, and has since before she even knew about Caroline.
“C’mon, Jess, it’s me. I want you to be happy.” Sure Rory made him happy, but only because she was the only friend he had here, it wasn’t the way Y/n made him happy. Before he could deny for words again Caroline came back running into the room with her stuffie in her hands. Having already said her goodbyes, she opened the door and walked out.
“Caroline, wait hun! I think you should go for it Jess.”
She walked out the door, closing it behind her, leaving Jess to stare at where she disappeared. He decided to take her advice, just maybe not the way she meant it
-
Y/n helped Caroline pack more snow onto their snowman. Caroline wanted to do it after she heard Luke complaining about town events again, he stopped complaining when he saw how excited the girl was. They had Mr.Wiggles off the side learning against the tree, using him as a reference.
“Mommy, no. Mr.Wiggles has more hair.”
Caroline was getting very comfortable ordering her mother around, but in this instance Y/n let it slide, poking more sticks on the top of the snowman’s head to mimic Mr.Wiggle’s spiky hair.
“That’s good!”
Lorelei and Rory were just one snowman down, both told Caroline they thought she would win and encouraged her before she even started. Since they were so close, they could hear the scene that had just played out.
“Tough age, wait till you get to the terrible twos. ‘No’ is all you’ll hear.” Lorelei said, kindly as her and her own daughter walked past them. Y/n let out a laugh at the comment before she asks, “You guys done already?” “No, but after Michelangelo over there busted out the power buffer, and when Caroline busts out her cuteness, what chance do we have?” “I see your point.” “So off to Luke’s we go.” “We’ll see you there in a bit.”
-
Y/n was standing talking to one of the decorators when she saw Lorelei and Sookie step out of the kitchen, quickly finishing her directions she wrote down a note on her clipboard then made her way to meet them at the entrance of the dining room.
When Sookie sees her, she asks, “What’re we looking at today?” Sookie was really fun to work with, like Lorelei she was very chill as a boss, but Sookie was also so kind and always took it upon herself to make sure Y/n has eaten and that her and Caroline are taken care of. She could tell the woman was going to make an amazing mother.
“This is last on the list.” She replied, after she took a quick glance at her clipboard, then continued, “We’ve got trumpets, the madrigal singers-” “Sorry to interrupt, but I’m not playing squire of Bracebridge.”
Sookie and Lorelei must have finally told Jackson to play the squire, they told her earlier in the week that they were playing to ask at the last moments so he had to. It was a flawless plan, especially when Jackson can’t say no to Sookie.
She saw that Lorelei and Sookie were just ignoring him, so she played along and continued down her list, “All the servers are lined up. This is just for the recorder players and harpists.” She stopped at the recorder players and let Lorelei talk to them, “Hi. Lay some on us, guys.”
The two recorder players played the soft tube they were going to come accustomed to in the next few days. The three of them shared positive looks and when their playing came to an end, Sookie said, “Hey, you cats really know how to blow those things.” Lorelei continued Sookie’s comment by saying, “You’ve got the gig. Y/n here will call you later with the details. Thanks.”
Recorder players started packing their things, Jackson started again on the fact that he wouldn’t play the squire, and the three women continued to ignore him.
“When do the quests arrive?” “Thursday at four on their own jet.” “After buying out the whole inn.”
“Must be nice to have money.” Y/n added, checking off and writing down more notes on her clipboard.
“You know what struck me today?” “-Was it the fact that I am not the squire?-""We’re crazy for doing this.” “We’re beyond crazy.” It did feel crazy, Lorelei told her they’d never done a function this big before and that’s the reason they hired more help. Like her, but also that they were planning to do a lot more big things like this, more weddings, and such.
“We’re ‘Anne Heche speaking her secret language to god and looking for the spaceship in Fresno’ kinda crazy.” “Oquinis no-goodo noto.” Sookie said, causing Y/n add, “Il ecnatra dos guidan.”
Their nonsense was once again interrupted by Jackson, “And spring this on me at the last minute too. I mean, that’s just manipulative.” Suddenly a cook pops his head out of the kitchen, saying calmly, “Sookie- fire!”
Sookie rolled her eyes softly, this happened far too often, before saying, “I gotta get back in the kitchen. You guys handle the harps?” Both women nodded and replied in unison, “You got it.”
“Alright. I’ll do it. I’ll play squire Bracebridge if that’s what you want.” Everyone knew he would cave eventually. Sookie patted his arm and said a quick, “Thanks, sweetie.” before walking back into the kitchen to hopefully deal with the fire. “As long as it’s not just because I fit the costume.” Jackson looked back at Lorelei and Y/n, Lorelei had a grin on her face while Y/n wore a tight-lipped smile. “It’s because I fit the costume, isn’t it?” He followed after Sookie.
Lorelei put her arm around Y/n and led them to the harpist, “Go ahead.” The harpist played the same tune as the two recorder players. But just as the woman started, Lorelei got a call. She patted Y/n’s arm, “I have to take this, you handle the harpist.”
The girl tried to stay calm, nodding her head and going back to listening to the music. Lorelei trusted her, yes it wasn’t a big job by any means, but still it was a step into a bigger role down the line.
-
The next day, Sookie and Y/n had all the waiters/performers in the dining room going over what their job was. And teaching them the old English words to use for things.
Sookie was just telling Rune that he couldn’t just talk like an old man whe Lorelei came in with a disappointed look on her face, and let them know the dinner was off.
The three women, as well as Rory and Caroline were now sitting at a table at Luke’s, Caroline was happily eating her pancakes, plain just as she liked and completely unaware of the collective disappointment of the group.
Lorelei has really welcomed Y/n into her life. She may not be Jess’s biggest fan, but she would always help another teen mom out. Especially since she sees so much of herself in Y/n. She’s grown to really love the girl in the short time they’ve known each other. And aftering hearing Y/n didn’t have her family in her life she was more than happy to help and maybe become that family for her one day. Just like Mia did for her.
“I’ve got 30 pounds of aged beef, trays and trays of trout, mountains of prune tarts. I diced pumpkins until my hands turned orange. I’ve got pumpkin hands!” Sookie showed the table her hands, it apparently caught Caroline’s attention since she grabbed Sookie’s right hand and held it in her left while she continued eating. Sookie lets her hand rest in the little girl’s while she freaks out more and asks Lorelei, “How can you stay so calm?” “There’s nothing we can do about it.”
Rory was just as upset, mostly because she knew how hard her mother worked on the planning, “I can’t believe they got snowed in.” Y/n hasn’t told Jess, but she’s become pretty close to Rory, the girl sometimes comes to the Inn and helps around and Rory’s become kinda her only friend, that was until Rory invited her to the record store with Lane. After that day she had two friends.
After knowing Rory more, she realised how much she and Jess have in common, and even though Rory has a boyfriend she can tell there’s an attraction to Jess she’s trying so hard to hide.
Y/n zoned out for a moment, looking outside, she was upset that the first event she helped organise wouldn’t even happen. She was broken from her stare out the window from Caroline jumping in place while sitting on her mom’s lap, the cause of which was Luke coming to the table.
“You girls want anything besides coffee?” He asked, adding on with a pat on the girl’s head, “Or pancakes?” “Hey, what about Luke?” “What about him?” “He eats, and Jess eats. Doesn’t Jess eat?” Sookie directs the question at Y/n, before the girl could say anything Luke cuts her off, “What’s she doing?” “I think she’s inviting you for dinner.”
Getting distracted while trying to convince Luke to come to dinner, the four decide to still put on the dinner for the town. Like an out of control slumber-party.
-
The dinner was going great, the secret amazing part of inviting the town was that Y/n and Caroline could actually meet everyone. Miss. Patty and Babette loved Y/n and Caroline (mostly Caroline), Caroline loved Kirk, and everyone loved that Caroline could do whatever she wanted and Talor wouldn’t say anything. And Y/n got to meet Paris after all the stories she’s heard.
Caroline and Y/n were in line for the horse drawn carriage rides, when Caroline saw her favourite person, Lane. “Laney! I ride with you!” Lane, before agreeing, made eye contact with Y/n to make sure it was okay. Y/n gave them the go ahead and helped Caroline get settled. After their carriage left she made her way to the next one. Telling the driver it’s just her.
It was nice to get a break from everything. It was quiet and peaceful. Well that was until Jess ran up and hopped on the carriage next to her. Without a word he put the blanket that was over the girl’s legs on his too.
“I thought you and Care were going together.” “She’s one ahead, with Lane.” “Ahhh. Well it’s two to a sleigh no more, no less. So you were breaking the rules, you're welcome for saving you.” “You could have hurt yourself.” “Aw, you care about me.” “You are my baby's father.”
She wished she just agreed with him. She didn’t just care for him because he was Caroline’s dad, and she doesn’t think she says it enough. But then again, maybe it would mess things up if she admitted that. But that decision was made for her.
“I’m touched.” “Jess. I don’t mean it like that. I care about you, Caroline or not.”
Trying to change the topic to something she thought was more lighthearted, she says, “So, how are things with Rory?” “There are no things with Rory.” “C’mon, Jess, we can talk about this stuff-” “Why are you so insistent that I date Rory?”
She wasn’t expecting that outburst. Not from Jess. He rarely ever yelled at her, and when he did it was always misplaced anger, never actually angry at her. This time it was her, it was what she said.
“I just want you to be happy-” “C’mon, Y/n. Be serious.” “I am. I want-” “If you want me to be happy so bad, why won’t you give me a chance?!”
He turned his face to her, looking right into her eyes, she could see the hurt in his. Did she put it there?
“What’re you-” “Since we found out about Caroline, I’ve tried and tried to help you realise that I love you. And not how you mean ‘I love you’. I don’t love and care for you because we have a family and I have to. I love you, because I want to. I want to be with you. And I know it will be hard, but I’ll do the work.”
If she had more social awareness at the pent she would have hated that the coachman heard all of that. But after what Jess said, the look in his eyes; that was so full of love. She felt like it was just them two in the world. No, that it was just their little family in the whole world. He and Caroline were all she would ever need.
“I love you too, Jess. I have for so long, long before Caroline, but I thought you wouldn’t want to be tied down to me, especially after I had Caroline, that any sign I thought you gave me was all in my head.” “It’s not.”
He brought her in closer to him, an arm around her shoulders and when her arms wrapped around his waist he left a kiss on the crown of her head. The small kiss brought her eyes up to him, which led to their first real kiss in one year and nine months.
His lips were softer than she remembered, but they still fit into hers as if they never left.
She broke away from their reuniting kiss to place her head in the crook of his neck, wanting nothing more than to be close to him.
“My mom didn’t want me to come home.” She took her head out of his neck to look at him fully. They were always that person for each other, the one you can tell your problem to and they knew when to help and when listening was enough. Right now, she knew listening was enough.
“I’m sorry, Jess.” “It’s fine. Just sucks.” “I know. Well, Care and I will always want you to come home.” After her words, he brought her closer than before. She was always just what he needed.
Wanting to change the subject, Jess nodded his head to the snowman Y/n and Caroline built. “It’s good.” “What?” “Your snowman, well Caroline’s snowman I'm sure she’d want me to say.” “You know which one’s ours?” “Definitely shows her personality… It kinda looks like Mr.Wiggles.” “That’s what we were going for. But everyone thinks the one on the end is going to win.” “Really? It’s so overdone.” “I agree.” “You and Care’s should win.” “Agree again.”
-
The dinner was filled with Jess and Luke confused at what exactly was in the food, Jess and Y/n trying their best to keep Caroline sat which about half an hour in they gave up and just let her walk around the lobby, as well as saying hello and talking to everyone at the table. Having an interesting conversation with Mrs.Kim about grace, ‘helping’ Kirk by sitting on his rolling food cart, and even talking with Paris for a while.
Overall it was a great night. Even better when Jess, Y/n, and Caroline got to their shared room, putting Caroline asleep together for the first time in a while. And falling to sleep in the same bed together, holding each other, listening to each other’s breaths, as well as Caroline’s. Everything was just how they both always secretly wanted. And now get to have openly and freely.
In the morning Y/n got up early since she was technically working, and she still was when Luke, Jess, and Caroline left to open the diner for the day. It was around noon when Y/n finally left, walking to Luke’s to spend the day with her two favourite people. Which was when she saw Michelangelo’s snowman fallen to a large pile of snow on the ground.
She didn’t even have to think for a second to know that Jess did it. Sometimes he did the weirdest things to show his love.
The bell rang as she pushed open the door, she sat down next to Caroline, saying ‘good morning’ and getting one back before she made her way to the counter.
“I saw what you did.” “What’d I do?” “Caroline will be happy she won.” “Anything if my girl’s win.”
you, rory, and lorelai stumbled into luke’s very loudly. few heads turned despite this being the norm every morning. the ruckus you all caused wasn't ignored, just accepted. “ow, mom, you stepped on my foot!” rory whined. “ooh sorry” lorelai winced.
“go order, n/n.” lorelai shoved. you stuck out your tongue as the girls sat down. you saw jess was behind the register this morning instead of luke. he was reading (obviously) and looked up once he heard you guys enter.
“ooh, ror, look at that boy at the register. doesn’t he look divine?” you swooned in a light british accent. rory nodded, chuckling. “go talk to him penelope, darling. perhaps he’s interested in you.” lorelai mimicked your accent and threw a napkin at you.
you giggled and strutted to the register where jess was smirking slightly while still reading his book. you turned your head to the side and raised a brow, waiting for him to acknowledge you. he looked up and closed his book.
“what can i get for you?” he asked, grabbing his notepad. you leaned against the counter. “i’ll need a menu sweetheart, i’m new at this joint.” you responded, pretending to look at your nails boredly. he chuckled briefly and rolled his eyes before handing you a menu.
after looking for a split second, you began to order. “i’ll have the cheese fries, but hold the cheese please.” you smiled sweetly. “so just fries.” jess said, more a statement rather than a question. “i suppose so.” you rolled your eyes dramatically. jess grinned at your antics. “anything else?”
“oh no darling, i’m on a diet. i’ve got to stay pretty for the gentlemen. you never know when the one will show up.” you winked. he leaned closer to you. “i’m sure ‘the one’ wouldn’t mind what was on your palette.” he kissed your cheek and handed the notepad to caesar.
he turned back to you. “how’s your day been penelope?” he genuinely questioned. “not bad so far. of all the men i’ve seen before, and believe me i’ve seen a lot, i think you are the prettiest.” you complimented. watching jess get all flustered and start squirming was something you loved to watch.
“come over when school’s over?” he asked, holding your hand and playing with your fingers. you shrugged. “i suppose i could clear my schedule.” he nodded, giving you a kiss to which you happily returned.
“now i sashay away.” you giggled, sashaying to your family as jess watched with hearts in his eyes. lorelai covered her mouth, pretending to be curious.
“does he like you?”
“hmph, i think so. i believe he’s just a little shy.”
watching jess get ready to go on his countless and never ending dates had become some kind of routine for you. you’d come over to luke’s and sit at the counter as you watched jess serve the many customers that filtered through the diner. he’d come hangout at the counter with you every chance he got, chatting about whatever book you had your nose in. at six o’clock on the dot, jess would throw in the towel and head up the stairs to his and luke’s apartment. when this routine first started, you’d follow jess up and hangout on his bed as he changed for his date, nothing fancy just a new graphic t-shirt and more gel in his hair. however as time went on, you decided to stay back at your spot in the diner. watching him get ready to take out some girl who wasn’t you started taking it’s toll after awhile and you couldn’t take it. this went on for a few months before one day, you didn’t show up at the diner.
jess didn’t think anything of it at first. there were days you didn’t make it to the diner to see him. it was only after the fourth day of him not seeing you that he started to get suspicious. your absence had left a weird feeling of worry hanging over him and he had even resorted to going to school to see you but lane had told him you were sick. (you weren’t, just expertly avoiding him.)
the feeling hanging over him lifted when he spotted you in the diner on the fifth day. you were perched on your stool, a book placed in next to the plate of fries sitting on the counter. when your eyes met his, you quickly looked away deciding to scan over the cover of your book for the thirtieth time. your gaze stayed trained on the cover until a cup was set down next to your plate. when you looked up, jess was waiting in front of you.
“hey,” he said, a hint of smile on his face. if you didn’t know him so well you wouldn’t have noticed it.
“hi,” you mumbled. his gaze was intense as he stared down at you.
“where’ve you been?” he asked.
“oh y’know..” you trailed off.
“no, i don’t know” he breathed out. “lane said you were sick. how’re you feeling?”
you were quiet for a second, shifting in your seat under his stare. you sighed before answering, “i wasn’t sick.”
“then where were you?” he asked, still trying to investigate.
luke walked behind him, grumbling something about “customers needing food.”
“do you have a date tonight?” you switched the subject.
“maybe,” he shrugged. just as you knew him, he knew you and saw the way your shoulders ever so slightly slumped at his answer. “why?”
“just wondering,” you whisper. “i should be going, i have homework. have fun on your date.”
before jess could get another word in, you were hopping off the stool and grabbing your stuff before hurrying out the door.
“you’re an idiot,” luke said as he passed by again.
“what’d i do this time?” jess groaned.
“she likes you,” lorelai said from her table. when she had arrived jess wasn’t sure as he was too wrapped up in seeing you for the first time in what felt like several weeks. he stared at lorelai blankly before asking what the hell she was talking about. “well, she obviously likes you and you obviously like her.”
“she’s right, honey,” miss patty chimed in.
the thought of you returning the feelings jess had so carefully tried to suppress
for a various number of reasons had his head swimming. “i gotta go.”
jess hurried out the door of the diner, walking in the direction of your house. when he got to your front door, he hesitated before knocking. the time between the knock and when you opened the door seemed to last forever.
“jess? what’re you doing here?” you asked as you stepped onto the front porch, shutting the door behind you. he smiled at the way you hugged your sweater to your body as you felt the chilly wind.
“i wanted to see what’s going on with you-“
“don’t go on that date.” you interrupted. you started playing with the sleeves of sweater as you locked eyes with him.
he was quiet, obviously taken aback. “why?”
“because it will kill me if you do,” you whispered, barely audible.
“what was that?”
“it will kill me if you go on that date,” you said louder. “it hurts jess. watching you date every girl in stars hollow but me hurts. i’m in love with you and you don’t even see it! i sit at the diner and then i go watch you get ready for dates i’ll never go on just so i can be close to you! and that hurts me. i can’t do it anymore.”
“you’re in love with me?” jess asked softly. tears were in your eyes from how worked up your confession had gotten you.
“well, i mean, i guess so,” you admitted, looking away from him. he took a few steps closer to you.
“i’m in love with you too,” he whispered. his hands found your waist, the weight of them pressing gently through your sweater.
“you are? but why all the dates?” you looked at him again but quickly looked down again as a tear slid down your cheek.
“thought i couldn’t get you. thought you didn’t feel the same so i distracted myself” his voice was a quiet rumble as he leaned his forehead against yours.
“well you can, and i do,” you said just as quietly. he leaned away from you, one hand coming up to your cheek to brush another tear away.
“don’t cry,” jess whispered. “you’re pretty when you cry but please don’t cry.”
“you think i’m pretty?”
“mhm,” he hummed. he stared into your eyes for a second before saying “please tell me you want to kiss me as much as i want to kiss you.”
“i do,” you replied.
“good,” he smiled before leaning in to kiss you. his lips pressed gently against yours and his hand on your hip squeezed as he pulled you against him. he deepened the kiss and you put an around around his shoulders. when he broke the kiss, he smiled and pecked you gently again. “you’re telling me we could’ve been doing this the whole time?”
“seems that way,” you replied and pressed your lips against his. “so what now, mariano?”
“now, i take you out on a date.”
“what about your other date tonight?”
“there was no date tonight,” jess admitted. “there hasn’t been a date in a few weeks. ”
“oh.” you paused. “why?”
“they weren’t you. all i want is you.” jess revealed. he leaned in again, barely giving you a chance to process what he said, kissing you with more force than the first kiss. after breaking the kiss he mumbled, “where do you want to go to dinner tonight?”
“hmm, maybe luke’s?”
"so, ready to go?" he asks, ruffling his already disheveled hair.
"ready as ever."
he takes your hand trying to rush you to the little place kirk plays movies, not too far from luke's place. star's hollow is beautiful in autumn, brown and orange leaves everywhere, and of course the scent of coffee was all around - but then again wasn't it always?
it took about ten minutes to get there, kirk greeting you immediately "so, y/n, jess, what would you like to watch today?" you take a quick glance at jess, looking back at you he says "edward scissorhands, i mean... it is the season?" he waits for your nod of approval, and gives a small kiss on the cheek, making you blush. "coming right up. oh and would you like some popcorn or drinks with that? it's an extra five dollars." kirk offers his face stoic as usual. you both look at each other and nod, as jess gives him a five dollar bill. "my treat," he smirks
"mm oh how romantic," you say teasingly, leaning closer,
"indeed it is", he says leaning so close your noses are practically touching, yet just as you're about to kiss him he pulls away with a mischievous grin starting to spread across his face. "wait for the movie," he tells you, giving you a wink as you roll your eyes.
"y/n, jess - movie and snacks are ready, please be seated." kirk says bringing you both to the little screening room. the movie starts and he brings you closer as you lean onto his shoulder. a couple of minutes pass, sometimes he looks at you - like he always does.
about half an hour passes in the movie and only then do you realize he was taking glances. you catch him mid-glance, gazing into his chocolate-brown eyes. they stare right back at yours, yet just for a second they glance at your lips then right back up to your eyes. your noses touch again, your eyes shut and he leans in. your lips touch his, a sweet and sour taste on your lips.
the night is full of nothing but the feeling of his lips on yours, as the movie comes to close he leads you out of kirk's small movie place holding your hand. he leads you home and stops at your front door "hey y/n," he holds your hand tighter and takes your other with his free hand "i really liked tonight. in fact, i really like you."
"i really like you too, jess." you just can't stop smiling, you can feel heat rushing up to your cheeks, even in the autumn breeze. you lift up your heels and lean in for one final kiss. your head rushes with the same bliss on your lips, the same taste - it could never get old.
"goodnight, y/n."
"goodnight, jess"
POISON, jess mariano
Tumblr media
summary: jess has always kept to himself. never cared to like a girl since it “wasted his time,” but when he meets her…
pairings: jess mariano x fem!reader
warnings: fluff, smoking, making out, jess’ in love !
POISON
it all started with...
"jess, go help out that table," his uncle demanded, too busy sweeping the counter to look at him.
"yes, uncle Luke." huffed the boy, murmuring something under his breath, staring at his feet as they moved towards the table.
once his eyes locked with yours, as poetic as it sounds, the world around him, stopped.
"I-what can I get you?" he asked, quickly collecting himself as he awaited for your answer.
"uhh, a danish." you hummed, your eyes skimming the boy, seeing him for the first time.
his eyes looked down, spotting a book you've been reading, "pride and prejudice, huh?"
"you read?" to find someone your age, matter of fact, a boy, that reads, wasn't something you hear everyday.
"not much." was all he said.
oh.
"aha." you hummed as a reply.
"hemingway's better," the boy continued.
"yeah?" you raised your brow.
"yeah." he stared into your eyes, daring you to say something.
"jess! get the girl her goddamn food!" the boy, jess, rolled his eyes at his uncle, giving the girl one last smirk before leaving her table.
"one danish to that girl." jess stated, throwing the notepad onto the counter and making his way upstairs, deciding to finish his shift for the day.
jess was smoking a cigarette at the lake when he heard her voice again.
"smoking can kill you." you say as you sit down next to him, your legs dangling from the bridge.
jess looked at you, tilting his face a bit before averting his eyes back to the lake.
"yeah, well.." he didn't know what to say.
"it'll be a shame, too pretty to die." you said quietly, loud enough for him to hear, though.
"are you flirting with me?" the boy smirks, looking at your face once again.
"why, is it working?"
"well I feel quite flattered." he smiles, putting a smile on your face too.
"you're pretty too." he says after a bit of silence.
"thank you, jess."
"hey! you know my name, tell me yours."
"dunno, I like being mysterious." you gave a cheeky smile.
"please?" he tried giving you his best puppy eyes, which worked.
"y/n."
once jess heard your name come out of your lips, he paused, his eyes slowly drifting around your face, finally putting a name to the face.
"well, y/n, come walk with me?" he stood up, proposing his hand for you to take.
you take his hand, lifting yourself up and letting him take anywhere.
"what's with you and y/n?" Luke bursts into their shared room, startling jess, who has been leaning on Luke's bed, one hand holding his book.
"what do you mean?" his ears seemed to prick up at your name.
"you know what I mean! running around with y/n for 2 months now!"
"look, I might be in love with her." he stated.
"in love?! jess, you're 17." his uncle yelled confusingly.
"so?! im 18 soon. y/n is amazing, I've never felt like this before."
"I never saw you like this before!" Luke sighed, calming down. "just don't fuck up." and with a final nod, he left, leaving jess with a small smile on his face.
jess pulled himself up, reaching for the phone.
"y/n, hi." he smiled, biting his lip.
"jess!" your voice came from the other side, making his smile grow wider.
"meet me at the bridge in 5." and with that he ended the call, rushing downstairs and out the diner.
once he reached the bridge, he was out of breath. he ran so he could make it before you, so you didn't overthink if he bailed on you or not.
"jessie" you smile teasingly once you meet him.
"y/n." he did the same.
"anything you wanted to ask me?" you raise your brow.
"right! y/n, I know we only know eachother for a bit more than two months, but I fell for you. your smile, our share of love for books and music, your random rants late at night. I fell for you."
he awaited for your answer, his heart beating out of his chest, he has never done that before. the first time he saw you, he was addicted. it was like poison. you were poison.
but he loves it. he loves you.
"I fell for you too." your face hurt from smiling.
that was all jess needed for him to pull you into a long kiss, grabbing onto your neck, he kissed you long and good.
both could stayed like that forever.
You weren’t sure which was worse - the dinner your mother was hosting, or the idea that you now had to put up with a whole night of Luke’s strange nephew, whom you’d never met before.
Of course, you loved your family to pieces, and you loved Sookie and Jackson; hell, sometimes you looked at Luke as more of a father than you did your actual dad, but having everyone together for what you knew would be at least a three course meal, under one roof, with Luke’s mysterious nephew from New York, just felt draining.
So, to preserve what little social battery you had left for the day, you decided to spend the time between school and dinner in your room upstairs with a good book and a cd playing from the player that sat on your dresser at a low volume. You had to change the cd twice, first from one of your mothers Bangles cds to a Smiths one, but just as you were enjoying the beginning of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust album (and nearly finishing up your book), did you hear the clanging of pots and pans from downstairs, as well as Sookie and Jackson’s lighthearted bickering.
You managed to bury yourself back into your book, one leg crossed loosely over the other outstretched one as you half-sat, half-laid on your bed, being mindful of your shoes so as to not get any dirt on your covers.
From downstairs, Jess was wandering around the Gilmore home as everyone else did whatever they were doing in the kitchen, internally monologuing and half-mocking their decor. He’d met Rory already, and she seemed like a nice enough girl. Enjoyed books. But he had yet to meet the third and final Gilmore girl, who so far had only been mentioned. However, as Jess scanned the various photographs on the mantle, he could hear the faint guitar of Suffragette City emanating from somewhere upstairs.
After peeking down the hallway to make sure no one was watching, Jess smirked and snuck up the stairs, into what was surely off-limits territory for someone like him. Still, he took the stairs two at a time and stealthily, managing to avoid all the places that would creak in a house like this one, despite never stepping foot inside beforehand. He followed the music down the hall, past some more paintings and pictures, to another bedroom. The door was open, and he was able to take a look inside. Posters covered most of the wall, leaving little space to show off the paint beneath them. Bookshelves occupied the wall right beside the door, and similarly to Rory’s room, they looked stuffed to the brim with books.
On the bed, facing him, was the person he assumed to be the final Gilmore girl - Rory’s twin sister. He watched intently, scanning every feature of your focused face as you scanned the final pages of the book you were reading. How your brow furrowed, eyes locked on the ink before you. The way the foot that hung off the edge of the bed was moving to the beat of the song.
Once Jess had decided that he’d been watching you long enough to constitute stalking, and how that was probably extremely creepy, he nudged the door open with a creak and stepped inside, clearing his throat and pulling his lips into a slight smirk. “Hey there, Ziggy.”
At first, you thought that your mother was finally calling you down to dinner, until you heard the unusually male - and entirely unfamiliar - voice come from the body in your doorway. Tucking a receipt into your book to mark your place, you glared over at the boy standing in your room with his hands behind his back, smugness rolling off of him in waves as he admired your room.
“You’re Jess, aren’t you.” Your flat tone seemed to amuse him.
“How nice, you already know my name. I’m flattered.”
You watched him as he walked around your room, over to the window where your desk was, trying to figure him out as he peeled back your curtains. “It’s impossible to not know someone’s name in this town, even someone who’s only been here for 28 hours.”
He chuckled. “Nice one, Ziggy. Now tell me, why aren’t you downstairs with the rest of the freakshow? I mean, they are your family, after all, aren’t they?”
You pretended to smile, but it came out as more of a grimace. “Sorry to break it to you, Mariano, but I’ve been banned from the freakshow. Apparently having apathy toward any sort of Gilmore humour is forbidden, and they’ve locked me away forever.”
“Aw, so sorry to hear that.” Jess mocked, placing a hand over his heart with an exaggerated pout. “I can’t believe they shunned such a ray of sunshine.” He smirked at your rolled eyes. “No, really, you must be a real treat at parties.”
“Quit it, Mariano. Is there a reason you came up here or did you just want to cause enough trouble to get kicked out of our beloved Stars Hollow? Because if so, you came to the right girl.”
Jess’ brow quirked. “Really?”
“Yeah,” you heaved a dramatic sigh, slipping off your bed to walk over to Jess. “But it’s like… 9pm on a Wednesday. In Stars Hollow. Even if I wanted to cause trouble, and I don’t, because I did enough of that at school today, there’s nothing to do. Everyone’s asleep, and I’m pretty sure our 24-hour mini-mart closed like, half an hour ago.”
Now it was Jess’ turn to roll his eyes. “Your sister said that already. Is there seriously nothing to do here?”
“Nope.” You shrugged, just as a thought came to mind. “Well… there is one thing…” Jess’ eyebrows raised at the prospect of having something fun to do, and you couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s not anything revolutionary, you know.”
“Still, give me something, anything, to get us out of here, Ziggy. I’m begging you. I’m being suffocated by the stale air of suburban life.”
You nodded, tapping your fingers on your thigh. “Fine, I’ll tell you. But you gotta do one thing for me.”
“What is it? I’ll do anything, I swear.”
“Stop calling me Ziggy.” You said. “It’s a stupid nickname, and although I admire the fact that you listen to David Bowie enough to come up with a nickname like that one, I hate it. Call me by my actual name.”
“Well I would, if I knew it.”
“My mother never told you my name?” You asked with a raised brow. “She never shuts up about me and Rory, I’m surprised you never caught it.”
“Apparently, I didn’t. It seems she likes talking about Rory more.” Jess shrugged. “At least, around me she does.” He barely caught the slight sag of your shoulders, the drop in your demeanour, before you picked it back up and smiled.
“Well, Jess. I’m Y/n. Y/n Gilmore.” After a pause, you looked around and snagged a sweater from the chair in the corner of your room. “Now, if you’ll follow me, let’s go have as much fun as we’re able to in Stars Hollow at night.”
Jess waited impatiently behind you as you unlatched the window by your desk and pushed it up, slipping through and holding it open for him. As he clamoured out, you grabbed the rock underneath the window and placed it on the windowsill, lowering the window so you’d still be able to get back in later.
You could still hear the tail end of the album playing as Jess looked around.
“How are we supposed to get down?”
“The trellis, obviously.” You said, carefully making your way across the porch’s roof to the trellis right next to the kitchen window. “Just don’t make much noise, this thing is right next to the kitchen’s window and if we get caught we’re screwed. Follow my lead, and run when you hit the ground, got it?”
“Got it.”
Scaling down the trellis was basically second nature to you, but you made sure to look up every once in a while to make sure Jess was doing okay. He seemed to be, which comforted you somehow. You waited at the bottom for him, making sure to stay out of view of the window to the kitchen and the edge of the porch, which were on either side of the trellis, and could possibly get both you and Jess grounded.
When he landed, he looked at you, and a dish clattered in the kitchen. You both snapped to the window, then back to each other. On instinct, you took his hand and ran toward the woods.
“Where the hell are we going?!” Jess whisper-shouted.
“Relax!” You whisper-shouted back, slowing to a stop as soon as you were hidden in the tree line. “We’re not going into the woods, dumbass. What do you think would’ve happened if we waltzed out in the open in front of the living room window?”
Jess only sighed and nodded, letting go of your hand. He let you lead him through the trees, keeping the light of the house close to you, walking around the garage and past all the cars, waiting until Babette’s house was out of sight until you stepped back onto the road.
The walk was calm and quiet, crickets and the breeze occupying you instead of chatter. After a while, when you were beginning to reach the town centre, Jess spoke up. “So, what now?”
You shrugged. “Not sure. Usually I head to the lake, bring a book, or a cd player and some headphones. I don’t normally bring people with me, you know?”
Jess nodded, lips slightly pursed. The walk continued through the town, passing by shop after shop, all of them closed for the night. You had to admit, you weren’t used to taking walks like these, out in the open. Normally you’d find whichever path kept you out of the possible sight of the townspeople, a habit you developed after Taylor snitched on you to your mother after he caught you walking to the lake by the Inn when you were 12. Still, it was nice, and even if you were caught, you somehow didn’t seem to mind it.
As the buildings were fading again and you knew you were approaching the lake, you checked your watch. 9:27pm. You sighed, and Jess looked at you. Dropping your arm, you shook your head. “Almost 9:30. They definitely have to know something’s up at home. Probably sending out a search party by now.” You told him, before shrugging. “Or, you know, miraculously, they forgot we existed and are eating Sookie’s delicious no-allergen, fourteen course meal as we speak.”
Jess scoffed. “Yeah, right. Luke might not care that much, but Lorelai? She seems like the world’s most protective parent.”
“She is.” You confirmed, sitting on your usual bench, eyes following Jess as he sat next to you. “Trust me, I love her to death, but it gets annoying sometimes.”
“Yeah, well, at least you have a protective mom.” Jess’ hands gripped the edge of the bench, his body hunched forward, making him look small, ready to run at a moment’s notice. “Mine decided I wasn’t worth the effort. Shipped me off to this… circus show without so much as a ‘sayonara, kid.’ You’re lucky.”
You frowned. Everyone knew within the hour of him arriving in Stars Hollow that Jess was a troubled kid, but even troubled kids deserved parents that cared. He was right, though, you were lucky. It just didn’t feel like it.
“I know I’m lucky, Jess, but it’s not all rainbows for me, you know.”
“Oh yeah? How?” He scoffed. “You have the perfect life, Y/n. A mom that cares, a great twin sister - hell, even Luke sings your praises.”
“Luke sings?”
Jess rolled his eyes. “You know what I mean.”
“It’s not like that all the time, Jess.” You sighed. “My ‘great’ twin sister is, apparently, so great that she has all eyes on her at all times. My grandparents are always so proud of her for being so smart and planning this amazing, expensive, studious future - they’re planning on funding it, too, from the sounds of things. I just want to live, you know?” You kicked a rock with your shoe, avoiding Jess’ concerned gaze.
“And my mother seems more concerned about her wellbeing than mine, closer to her than to me. But somehow she wonders why I’m the troubled one. I mean, I act out, I barely go to that stupid prep school because it’s so suffocating, and I got an eyebrow piercing without permission instead of taking a calculus test last month, which I’m just getting out of that punishment. Everyone’s so focused on Rory and how seemingly great she is, I don’t even remember the last time I was appreciated for anything. And don’t even get me started on my dad.”
“Sounds like these freaks don’t know a good person when they see one.” Jess told you. “You seem chill. Adventurous, too. But just because you aren’t appreciated doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough.”
You couldn’t help but smile. “You too, Jess.” The world quieted around you for a moment, stars shining off the rippling waters of the lake. “But we don’t need to be good enough for them. Just good enough for us.”
He smiled, nodding once at you. Again, you appreciated the silence with him, watching the water or the sky. It wouldn’t be long until Luke and your mother found you both, you with your head on his shoulder and one knee bent to your chest, laughing quietly at a joke he told as you continued to get to know one another. But that was later. For now, you simply sat and watched the water, wishing the moment could last for the rest of your lives.
pairings — teen dad! jess mariano x y/n
warnings — none!! (unedited tho so…)
word count — 2.9k
a/n — i’m not the biggest fan of how this turned out (feels lowk out of character even tho i typically write jess best bc i am him), but i LOVEDDDD this plot. i plan on making a part two if that’s something you guys would want!! also dad! jess is my fav (as you guys know) so to have him be bowie’s dad??? FUCKING LOVEEE.
BEING SENT TO STARS HOLLOW was worse than one would imagine. especially for jess mariano, a kid who'd been taken from his hometown and placed in a small apartment above a diner with an uncle he hardly knows. this would be enough to drive one mad, one could presume. but to make matters worse, he was leaving behind his son.
the moment liz danes found out her sixteen year old son had gotten a girl pregnant, she freaked out. as any mother would do. but liz wasn't just any mother, she was (to put it lightly) a whack-job. so she spiraled when she figured this one out. what happened when liz danes spiraled you may ask? who was there for her? her sane big brother, luke.
the practical idea seemed to be sending jess to the quaint down of stars hollow. a place where liz grew up, where she knew luke would keep an eye on him. where she also knew he couldn't cause any havoc. and his world wouldn't become corrupt like hers, being a teen parent.
the months of the pregnancy was difficult to be away. y/n was just a girl he'd met at a party, he was sick and tired of his mother's new boyfriend's hurtful words. y/n was going through something similar and they decided they'd lean on one another one night. until three weeks later when she called jess asking him to coffee, and surprising him with something much more. y/n was scared, as any pregnant sixteen year old would be. being without jess didn't help her case.
the teenage boy didn't let the separation get to them however. his nights sneaking out were spent at a phone booth in the middle of town, talking to y/n about everything and anything. his breaks at the diner were calling to ask about doctors appointments. sure, she had just been a girl he'd met at a party. but the emotional bond of a baby knitted the two together. they were scared kids, they had no one but one another. so they became much more than kids who once went to a party. they were friends.
when y/n went into labor, jess ran out of school like his life depended on it. hoping into his car and speeding back to new york. luckily making it so he could see his son born just in time. his first time meeting his son was only his fourth time seeing y/n. the fourth of many, many visits. stars hollow became less and less entertaining to him as time went on. especially after coming back almost two weeks after his son was born. the pranks, the stealing, the teasing around with this girl rory... it wasn't anything to him. he missed his son, he missed the woman who had his son. jess mariano wanted to be with his family. because for the first time in his life, he had a family. someone loved him, and he loved someone.
"1984 is the most overrated 'classic' book i've ever read," rory gilmore smiled at jess with a teasing look. now, almost a year after his son's birth, jess mariano was nearing eighteen. his adolescence was coming to an end (although it did when the stick turned pink). the toying around was still very much in his nature. hence the conversation with the good girl in a pink sweater.
"nu uh, it's a classic. you can't just hate on 1984," jess counters while standing behind the diner's countertop. the diner was slow, despite it being around the early afternoon and a sunday. which is why two teenagers were sharing false opinions like it was bible. he didn't like her — he was sure of that. ever since bowie mariano was born (guess who named him), jess's feelings had become aware. the love he felt for his son was prominent in his everyday life. unlike anything he'd ever felt before. it was hard for him to even imagine ever having feelings for someone. not when being a dad was his number one priority.
"you're just saying that," rory laughed at his words once more. her late night talks with her mother about jess seeming to not be recalled. the ones where lorelai stressed to rory what jess was going through as a teen parent, something she knew all too well. especially being away from his kid. in her eyes, he was a christopher who'd left his rory. lorelai didn't exactly want her daughter involved with that. but it was hard to resist when he kept giving rory that james dean look. matched with the leather jacket and the book references.
"when are you going to see bowie?" lorelai asked the teenage boy, attempting to remind her daughter of his priorities. jess didn't see this as a question with ulterior motives. he knew lorelai had a deep understanding of him, whether she'd like to admit it or not. "soon, hopefully."
"is y/n liking her new place?" luke questions genuinely from lorelai's side, being reminded of jess's child's mother who he'd grown fond of. "it's kinda hard to like a place where you're crashing on your friend's sofa bed." jess scoffs, being reminded of his friend's condition. when y/n had first gotten pregnant, jess was aware of the darkness in her home. especially when she freaked out to him one night. the first time they opened up to one another. she was too scared to tell her dad about the baby, knowing he'd hurt her.
less than two years later, y/n was emancipated. working a part-time job in the city. where her friends helped watch bowie when necessary. along with (hesitantly) liz, whenever jess made sure she was sober and had an okay boyfriend. it was a lonely life: just like jess's.
"that poor girl," lorelai commented with a sympathetic look making jess's stomach twist. he hated thinking about the living conditions of his family, he hated thinking of being apart from them. but when he did, he couldn't stop. which is why that night, when luke came upstairs to the apartment after closing, jess stopped him to have a serious conversation. "can i talk to you?"
luke searched his nephew's face for sincerity once he heard those words. curious if this was gonna be a 'steely dan sucks' conversation or an actual serious one. a rare option for the teenage boy. "yeah, what's up?"
there was a deep expression anguished on jess's face as he sat at the table. he was clearly unsure how to put his words, which was prominent in his eyes. "i... i can't be away from bowie anymore. i can't let y/n live in that shithole. they're my responsibility."
luke heard his nephew's words clearly. he agreed with every word, a sigh erupting when he processed the stress his teenage nephew was experiencing over this. "where are you going with this, jess?" the diner owner questioned with a calm tone. he still wanted the best for his nephew. he still wanted him to finish high school and start a worthy life. one he didn't want to be started by running off to new york and working to provide for his family. "i need to be with them one way or another. i can't be away from bowie, i can't do that to my kid. i can't be my dad."
"you're not, kid. you're nothing like jimmy, i'm telling you that right now. you would do anything to be with bowie and that proves you're better than him," luke explained before letting out a sigh and nodding his head. "you're a good guy, jess."
a conversation continued throughout the night until the two finally came to a conclusion. or at least luke did. taking matters into his own hands, he picked up the phone once his nephew hit the pillow. a hushed tone rushing into verses of explanations until it all made sense.
the next morning, jess mariano woke up like any other day. not too long after he woke up he went down to the diner to get started on work. his thanksgiving break had begun, so his monday would be spent annotating a new book for his son in between rush hours. it was when two familiar faces entered the diner that he hardly glanced up, noticing the gilmores immediately. "hey jess, how's it going?"
"well, i'm not bleeding or anything so..." jess shrugged towards the woman while he scribbled in a final note for an older bowie. rory kept her eyes on him while luke handed the two mugs of coffee. he had something in his head, especially when he kept glancing out the window every few seconds. "that's good," lorelai nodded before turning to luke.
"what are you reading now? more jane austen?" rory teased while eyeing the boy and taking a sip of her warm coffee. his eyes didn't dare look up from her while he shut the book, "uh huh." he nodded with a thin lipped smile. rory noticed the children's book in his hands and grinned, "didn't know you were that behind. that makes sense with your book taste though."
"this is bowie's, i'm just writing some stuff in the margins for him for when he learns to read," jess shrugged without noticing the sudden change in demeanor when he mentioned his son. the baby had never been to stars hollow. jess also rarely brought up his son to anyone, especially stars hollow-ers. miss patty and babette already whispered about the rebellion enough as it was. he didn't need to add to it by opening up to people who didn't care about him. "oh... that's sweet," rory forced a smile before sinking down into her seat. she felt shorter.
jess picked up the coffee to begin to refill a few cups throughout the diner. his stance was interrupted once the diner phone began to ring, luke noticed this quickly. it wasn't long before he grabbed the coffee from jess's hand and hardly offered to do refills for him instead. jess knew luke was up to something but hesitantly took the phone call, "luke's."
"nice greeting," a voice echoed on the other side making jess's infamous smirk spread across his face. y/n. "well, i thought i'd ask you to marry me. but i was worried our meat supplier was on the other line," jess teased into the phone while his hand went in his pocket. he subconsciously turned around so his back was to the rest of the diner. wanting to be alone with y/n, as if that was possible through this.
"thought so," y/n hummed with an obvious smile. "hey, bowie's missing his dad."
"is bowie's mom also missing bowie's dad?" jess asked with his typical teasing tone towards his friend. "bowie's mom may be. but she doesn't exactly want to give him the satisfaction of that. bowie's dad is very cocky," y/n says through the phone while luke spots something through the window and smiles.
the sound of the bell was a familiar one. reminding the people in the diner that someone had arrived. jess was so used to it now that he didn't bat an eye typically, but this time he glanced around his shoulder for a moment. his eyes glancing back at the figure stood infront of the door. jess's brown eyes locked on them for a second as he dropped the wired phone and bolted past the counter to them.
stood before his eyes was y/n and bowie. the eleven month old was in her arms with a pacifier between his lips. y/n wore a smile while she placed her phone in her pocket with a free hand. she was engulfed in jess's scent immediately as he threw the two into his arms. cigarettes, cheap cologne, and coffee erupting comfortably into her. "hey, watch out i have a baby."
jess ignored her words, but lightened his grip on her while taking bowie out of her arms to hold him. "bowie, hey..." his voice trailed off as he held onto his son. he was interrupted with emotion by being with his son once again. because as much as fatherhood was something he never wished upon himself, ever desired whatsoever, it had turned into the best thing that ever happened to him.
"hi kid," luke greeted the teenage girl while walking over to give her a side hug. he turned his attention towards jess who was hugging his baby with a grin he hadn't seen in awhile. "i thought about our talk last night, jess. you were right."
jess glanced over at his uncle before looking back at y/n with a smile. which shocked even him, because a smile was not something he'd done while being in stars hollow. "so..." luke's voice trailed off while he gave the floor to y/n. who took it and looked at jess, "i think bowie needs to be with his dad... and his mom."
the group shared a few looks, mixed with confusion and happiness. "i asked lorelai for a favor, y/n and bowie are gonna stay at the inn for a few weeks. until you guys can figure out a place." luke started with a nod. "you're gonna be eighteen in a few months, you're gonna graduate in a few months. i want you to do that, jess. so, i brought you some courage... as cheesy as that sounds."
jess looked between the two for a moment before sharing a nod with his uncle, as if a thank you in their own language.
"hey, i'm lorelai. it's nice to meet you i've heard so much about you. we seem to have a lot in common," lorelai interjected as she walked over and introduced herself to y/n. y/n knew her fair share of scoop of the town. her daily phone calls to jess were hardly just baby talk. she'd spent a lot of them telling him to go out with lorelai's daughter, who seemed good for him. but every-time... something was holding him back. "yeah you too, i'm y/n. thank you for everything, by the way. you really didn't have to let me."
"c'mon we're moms, we help eachother out. we can be like desperate housewives. but with no men," lorelai smiled while giving y/n's hand a squeeze. "oh! this is my bowie, rory."
"hey," y/n greeted with an awkward wave towards the other teenage girl who still seemed in shock by the situation. she forced a smile and waved, "hey."
the dispute was a lot more awkward than y/n could have hoped. but a sense of envy had taken over the both of them as they reflected on past or current relations with jess. an awkwardness that washed away quickly when y/n’s eyes locked back on jess and her son. a favorite sight of hers.
“c’mon,” jess nodded towards y/n while she took the baby out of his arms. he grabbed her bag and placed a free hand on her back, mumbling goodbyes before exiting the diner with his two. the three took the scenic tour towards the inn. bowie cracking a million smiles at the tons of birds in sight. the two teenagers reciprocating the action with shared giggles at the baby’s happiness.
the moment they entered the room, jess sat down with bowie to let y/n unpack a little bit. while the two caught up on unspoken things. “so… that was rory,” y/n says suggestively while unpacking her toiletries in the bathroom. jess was sprawled out on the bed with bowie in his arms, playing superman. he turned to her once she erupted from the bathroom and took a seat beside him. “that was rory.”
“she’s pretty,” y/n nodded with a small smile. in an attempt to be polite about jess’s possible love interest, yet he seemed hardly interested when bowie was around. “i guess,” jess shrugged before holding bowie back up in his arms. “have you asked her out yet?”
“i’m not too focused on that,” jess answered while clearly wanting the conversation to be done. y/n only smiled at the sight of the baby, gently rubbing his back. jess’s eyes locked onto her once more. watching her look at bowie with all the love made his eyes gleam. the way her smile spread with love, only made his heart beat faster happily. “thanks.”
y/n glanced over to him at his word, furrowing her eyebrows gently while she looked into his eyes. “for what?”
“for being here, i guess.” he mumbles while turning back to face bowie and bring him closer to him, the baby resting his head on jess’s chest. y/n smiled at the sight while leaning into the pillow, happily watching the two. “of course.”
so, the two laid back into the bed. smiling at the sight of their baby falling into a comforting sleep. followed by y/n minutes later, at a moment of peace. finally having someone she trusted with her baby so she could peacefully have a break. jess shut his eyes to the sound of the light breaths of both his favorite people. never having felt something so perfect once again in his life.
"What are you actually doing here, Y/n? You work on Saturdays, why aren't you in New York?" You shrugged your shoulders, "I quit." You said curtly. He furrowed his brows but didn't press on the matter. You sat in silence watching the moon's reflection in the water below you. You thought you'd feel nauseous in the moment but you weren't.
"Hey Jess?" You called out to him. "Yeah Y/n," he replied still looking at the water below. You could feel your heartbeat quicken, and your hands start to tremble. "I'm pregnant." You said before you could psyche yourself out of saying it. You looked over to Jess whose eyebrows were raised astronomically high, he looked at you with wide eyes. You didn't say anything else. His face softened as he took in this new information "oh."
<3 <3 <3
"You hungry?" Jess asks as you guys make your way back into the town. It's the first thing he'd said since your conversation at the bridge. You'd been walking back in awkward silence, until now. You know nothing should be open around this time , but you nod anyway. He nods back in acknowledgment, yet doesn't say anything more. Instead, Jess puts his hands in his front pockets and his shoulders visibly tense up, "how long are you here for?" You can't help but feel a need to relieve some of the tension that has built up between you.
"Why? You sick of me already Maraschino?" You smile at him and let out a small laugh. Jess can't help but relax and smile at the sight of you. "No, no, just wondering," he states, "I think I'm staying actually," even though you'd already came to the conclusion that you were staying back in New York, now that you were in Stars Hallow you weren't so confident in your decision. You wanted to stay, but what if Jess didn't want you to stay? You can't just demand that he stay with you. Before you can put any thought into it you find yourself asking if he'd like for you to stay. It comes out like a whisper, and you wonder if he'd even heard you. You start to feel nauseous, but Jess, he reaches his hand out for yours and entangles your fingers together, "Yeah, I do."
You released a breath, you didn't know was caught in your throat. Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones, or maybe it was pent up tension, but you really felt the urge to cry, too. You let out a shaky breath as Jess pulls you in close. You wrap your arms around his body, and he squeezes your shoulders in reassurance. "Luke's going to have a hard time digesting this, just so you know." You nod your head and let out a breathy chuckle.
You tell Jess, that Luke didn't need to know right away, it was night time and he'd probably be tired, and you both needed to think about how to tell him. It would be right to tell him properly, and not when he's tired.
To be fair, you and Jess didn't know how Luke was going to react. But you'd thought he'd at least start yelling, or express his feelings, but this, this was weird. When you told Luke that you were pregnant, his jaw dropped, then for a split second he looked like he was going to say something but didn't. Instead he'd grabbed his coat and walked right out the diner. Were people supposed to react like that? That's not normal, Right? Jess had actually been left speechless, no, actually, BOTH of you were left speechless. How were you supposed to know what Luke was thinking? It was starting to scare you. What did this mean??
Jess thought it'd be best to wait for Luke in the upstairs apartment, in case he came back deciding he did want to yell. You were both sitting on the couch, waiting for what felt like an hour, when you decide to break the silence.
"So...Maybe we should talk about this? I know we talked at the bridge, but now that we're more composed and well-rested, we can talk?" You say, bringing your legs on the couch and turning toward him. You realize you'll probably be doing most of the talking, since Jess isn't the most talkative in the relationship. He agrees with you and proceeds to let you speak. "First and most importantly, I feel stupid for asking this but I need to know. How do you feel about us? I know you said you'd help with the baby, and you know be around, but do you still want to be with me?" Somewhere in between asking him this you tilted your head down, not really wanting to see his reaction to you question. "Are you kidding? Of course I want to be with you, I do." He brings his hands to your cheeks and gently lifts your face up to see him, "I will always want to be with you, no doubt about that. You're the only one who can deal with me. You're the only person I like in this place." You can't help but smile brightly at him and lean in to kiss him. He doesn't hesitate to kiss you back, once he pulls away his eyes immediately locked on yours, "Don't feel stupid for asking the question, or embarrassed, its important to know this before we continue talking about this." You nod and pull him into your embrace, muttering a quick thank you, you continue on with your conversation.
By the time Luke comes back, you and Jess are deep in conversation that you don't hear the door open, but you DO hear the door slam shut. It makes the both of you jump out of your seat. You both wait for Luke to say something but he doesn't, he stands awkwardly in front of the both of you and you realize either you or Jess will have to get this going. "I don't mean to be rude, but It'd be nice to get this conversation over with before I go into labor," Luke nods and pulls a chair from the table into front of the couch before motioning you to sit.
"Look, Y/n, I'm sure you're a nice, smart girl, but there is not room in this apartment for three of us, I don't know how long you will be staying, but I'm guessing this isn't a temporary stay. I don't know you, other than the little bit of what Jess has told me, but I know Jess and well I don't know if i can trust the two of you together. Good news though, my friend, Lorelai, offered to let you stay with her until we figure this out more." You're relieved that he didn't yell and kept it very calm, and can understand why he doesn't trust you, yet, but you also don't know him and it was weird he offered you up to this random lady, you didn't know, except for what Jess has briefly told you over the phone. "Okay um here's the thing Luke, or Mr. Danes, well actually which do you prefer?" You feel the need to ask for clarity seeing as you did barge in and announced your pregnancy, you figured you could at least refer to him as whatever he'd like, "Luke is fine," You nod your head in confirmation and continue on with what you were going to say before. "Here's the thing, Luke, while I can understand why you don't trust me, I just don't feel comfortable staying with Lorelai, I don't know her, I know of her, just like how you knew of me, but I don't know her so it wouldn't make me feel very uh great intruding on her life like that. I hope you can understand." He nods and seems to mull this over in his head, "doesn't Lorelai run an inn? I'm sure Y/n feel much more comfortable staying there instead," Jess chips in before looking over at you for some sign of approval, you nod and smile, "Definitely, it doesn't have to be for free either, I think this would be easier for me, until i get settled." Luke is nodding along with you and mutters a quick yeah before extending an invitation to dinner with Lorelai later that night, you agree and wait for Luke to bring something else up. "I'm not mad, a little disappointed, Jess you should've known better, but i want you guys to know that i am here for whatever reason you might need me. I assume you've talked about other things with each other and I mean I don't want to lecture either of you on this, I'm sure you're being hard on yourselves too, so just make smarter choices from here on out, deal?" Both you and Jess nod. Luke says a quick goodbye then turns to go downstairs.
You and Jess both relax and get comfortable on the couch, this time with Jess' head in your lap reading his book as you playing with his hair and listen to him speak intently. You end up falling fast asleep and only wake up later due to Jess shaking you awake letting you know that you'd be leaving for dinner soon. You thank him for waking you up and look in your bag for clothes before going to the bathroom to change. You had chosen your favorite shirt and jeans to wear, but immediately noticed the shirt felt tighter, then when you'd last worn it. No one could actually see that the shirt was tighter of course, but you knew, and knowing it was because you were getting bigger made you scared. You could've been better prepared if you had known you were pregnant sooner and hoped that even though you'd lost three months of planning, due to obliviousness, that you'd be able to plan everything out efficiently in the months to come.
Meeting with Lorelai was great and you instantly adored her. You learned she'd also gotten pregnant around your age, that she was a maid for the Inn she runs now. And you'd know exactly who to turn to when you'd start getting cravings. Meeting Rory on the other hand was very different than meeting her mother. You instantly felt a pang of jealousy when Jess and Rory greeted each other. You couldn't help but wonder if something was going on between the two before you'd come from New York. She was beautiful and seemed to have a to in common with Jess. You hated that you were thinking this way but at the same time what if he'd move on from you to her. You were breaking your own heart with different scenarios in your head, you wanted to cry everytime you looked at Rory. You spent a lot of that evening talking to Lorelai and Luke, which was better, the way they talked, the way they stared at each other, you could tell they belong together.
Lorelai told you to have Jess take you to the Inn the next morning and she'd get you situated right away, Luke seemed calmer about this but you could tell it was probably going to bother him that's you were spending the night. The drive back to the Diner was filled with comfortable silence until Jess perked up saying he be spending the night with you the next so he can be with you. "What? No, no way Jess." Jess rolls his eyes at Luke, "Yes Luke, Look you can't change my mind and it's not like I can get Y/n pregnant again." Then comfortable silence turned into awkward silence, and you wished he'd just stay silent.
“Come on wake up, wake up hon you’re missing it” You whisper shouted shaking Jess lightly as he grumbled tossing and turning not even thinking to fully peel his eyes open and look at whatever hell hour of night it was
“Is it sleep because In that case you’d be right” The brunette mumbled into the pillow his head rested on as you rolled your eyes still attempting to shake him awake
“Smell the air, come on smell it.” You threw the covers back from the both of your bodies wrapping you arms under his dragging the boy to his feet
“Smell the air, come on smell it.” You threw the covers back from the both of your bodies wrapping you arms under his dragging the boy to his feet
“It smells cold, No it’s freezing!” Jess objected as soon as he could register what you were doing which made him try and pull the dead weight trick he used to do on cops but it was no use you were to blinded by it to even notice what your boyfriend was trying to pull
“The floor is cold” Now he tried to bargain with you plead to go back to bed but you still didn’t budge as you dragged him slowly to the front door
“God your so obsessed with the cold” You teased mocking the deep growls and groans that came from Jess as you began to hand him thick jacket having not switched over to a big coat yet
“That’s because it’s cold!”
💌💌💌💌
“I’m turning numb. Are my feet still attached to my body or did they snap off coming down the stairs?” The brunette complained as you both walked out into the middle of the empty streets clutching his body in a warm hug as if he were trying to keep himself together from falling apart under the harsh cold airs and winds
“They’re still there.” You sarcastically replied even going as far as to look back as if you were giving him the reassurance they were in fact Still there
“Why are we out here?” Jess could practically hear himself start whining hell he could get on his knees and plead for you to go back into your home if he didn’t already know your answer wasn’t going to change
“Take a Deep breath, yeah I smell snow” You declared as if it was you final decision and there was no turning back and Jess couldn’t look at you anymore crazy than he already was
“What!?”
“It’s coming I always know i can smell it and I’m never wrong” You both stopped abruptly in a random spot as you looked to the sky just waiting for it to finally fall
“It wasn’t in a forecast” Any other time you would have laughed at the thought of Jess sitting and actually watching a news station to get a weather report
“It’s Just my favorite time of the year the whole world changes color. Flakes, flurries, swirls, crystals, whatever form it comes in I’ll take it we go back snow and me we have a beautiful history.”
“I saw two forecasts neither ever mentioned snow cold, but no snow.” The brunette stated filling in the temporary pause of silence in your ranting
“Sleigh rides, ice skating, snowball fights I’ll even take curling and God I hate curling” You smiled brighter than a kid on Christmas morning starting to get a little antsy in your own skin
“Cranston on channel six said it would be dry. Kimmi listing live at five same thing no snow, nothing” Your boyfriend tried reminding you but as if he were talking to a wall he got no avail
“Hot cocoa, toddies, it’s the best time of the year.” It was so damn close you couldn’t practically taste the salt of it on your tongue
“Jimmy Mountain in a cue chopper once said it would be at least four weeks befo—” Jess’s word we’re stuck in his throat as flurries and snowflakes began to fall from the sky around you both
“Cranston and Kimmi are dumb asses.” Jess sighed in defeat wrapping his arm around you and you couldn’t wipe the smile off your face even if you wanted to
“Welcome friends.”
The familiar groan of a certain blue-capped man rang through the diner, louder than the bells that hung in front of the entrance. There, in the doorway, stood you in all your bothersome glory. Well, bothersome to Luke. His eyes were the only ones that darted your way, but your boyfriend’s as well.
A crooked smile crept up on Jess’s face as you sauntered over to the counter, quick to lean over and give Jess a peck on the lips. “Hey, baby. To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“And to what do I owe the chances of you being focused for the rest of the day?” Luke complained. “Jesus, Y/N, you’re distracting the asshole who needs to do his job!”
You let out a laugh that made Jess warm inside. “Sorry, Luke! I just wanted to stop by before I head off to do the fundraiser at the elementary school tonight.”
Jess walks around the counter to you, and wraps his arms around your body, pressing a kiss to your neck. “And I bet you’re looking for some motivation before you deal with those small miscreants?”
“Jess!” both you and Luke exclaim. You push away your boyfriend and give him a light hit to his chest, to which you get an overdramatized response, as per usual. “We are in a public place, and you need to be working!”
He slowly retracts, a hand to his chest, clutching his rag like he’s trying to stop some sort of bleeding. “Et tu, brute? How dare you march upon the council with such favor only to hurt instead? I must say, this is an act of-“ His dramatic monologue is cut off by Luke throwing a towel at his face.
“I won’t say it again, get to work Jess! Bye Y/N, before I ban you from coming while he works!”
You roll your eyes at the statement, knowing he’s only being satirical. “Bye, Luke. And bye,” you bat your lashes at Jess, then give him a final kiss on the lips. “You big goof.”
