Shout out to selfshippers who’s F/Os are dead in their canon.
It’s ok to be upset about their death and to grieve. You’re allowed to wish they were back and there was more content of them, even if you know it’s not going to happen.
Your F/O would be alive with you. They know you would never let anything happen to them. You two are living perfectly happy, I promise. :)

Your heart is thumping rapidly in your chest as you stand with the welcoming crew of NASA. Today is your first time seeing your husband, Ed, in over six months. Even in the South, it’s a bitterly cold December, so you pull yourself further into your coat. You cross your arms to keep in some warmth as you giddily bounce on the balls of your heels. Gordo and Danielle are close by, waiting to welcome their friend and colleague home as well. You can’t imagine what they went through together up there, but you know better than to ask.
Ed has to be cleared by NASA before making his first appearance since splashdown, so everyone is waiting as patiently as possible despite the tedious process. The press is everywhere, and you’ve been asked several questions. You never minded answering harmless questions to the media but still kept to yourself quite a bit. You and Ed liked your lives to be kept somewhat private.
The sound of clapping begins at the start of the crowd to your left, mission control coming out of their pit, and the landing crew to shake hands with Ed. You scan the area, waiting to spot your husband. You finally do, but he doesn’t see you yet. You swear your heart feels like it’s going to explode. Ed finally finishes shaking hands with the crew and isn’t too far from you now. His eyes dart across the crowd, looking for someone- looking for you. His eyes meet yours, and for a second, everything stops.
You start walking over to him, then begin briskly picking up your pace until you’re running over to Ed. You can hear the sounds of cameras popping as you dart to your husband, who looks over to you and opens his arms just in time to catch you mid-run. He spins you around in his arms as you bury your face into his neck. Your arms are wrapped tightly around his neck as you’re afraid to let go as if he’d vanish at any second, like this was all a dream. But it’s not; it’s real, and you can feel Ed’s strong arms supporting you. You take your time breathing in his scent that had long since disappeared from his pillow and clothes at home. You pull away from his neck, tears streaming down your cheeks as you grab ahold of Ed’s face, looking him closely in the eyes for the first time in ages.
“I love you,” you choke out, “so much.”
“I love you too,” Ed grins, leaning in to give you the kiss you’ve been waiting so long for.
Everyone cheers and claps as you and Ed laugh into the kiss. He lets you back down onto the ground, his arm immediately snaking around your waist protectively as he leads both of you over to Gordo, Danielle, and the rest of the astronauts waiting. The entire time Ed speaks to them, you can’t help but beam up at him, watching as his face contorts into a laugh before he hugs Gordo and his other friends. Ed is finally back, and you couldn’t be happier.

Black Moon
It’s been twenty-two days since Commander Napoleon Solo has seen another living soul. The tell-tale signs of the Soviet base, Zvezda, on the other side of the crater don’t really count—rovers, construction, whatever. He still hasn’t seen a person ever since Jones and Teller left him behind as the sole American on the moon.
There’s a knock at the door.
(An AU based on the TV series For All Mankind. A cosmonaut shows up at the door of Jamestown base, and Napoleon's solitary life on the moon is about to get a lot more interesting.)
Read it on AO3 (E, 6k)

Think my ask may have been eaten :( if not, then just ignore this, but any Face whump rec? (TV show not film!) Either good episodes or fics 😍
Oh boy you bet I do!!! Gosh I adore Faceman (and tv show over movie EVERY DAY!!!)
For episodes watch these:
1x03 Children of Jamestown. Face gets himself knocked out and they have to half carry him to a nearby house.
2x21 Deadly Maneuvers. He gets kidnapped and tied to a chair
3x11 The Bells of St. Marys. Some emotional background for him
3x25 Incident at Crystal Lake. gets shot in the chest and knocked backwards out a window and is forced to dive into a lake. He's wearing a bullet proof vest so much damage
4x19 Beneath the Surface
5x05 Theory of Revolution. Gets himself purposefully kidnapped where he's manhandled and punched repeatedly
5x08 Family Affair. Lots of good emotional stuff. Leads to a fight between him and Murdock.
and the best for last (literally. it's the last episode) 5x13 Without Reservations. The episode where face is shot in the gut, held hostage with Murdock and Frankie and nearly dies and is without a doubt my favorite episode.
As for fanfictions I have many lol. Check out my Faceman page on my fanfic masterlist! Here's the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jfJ8rHwvGCzmCfwJolr925mSCjcR5TS0TDPlCnzCOEY/edit#gid=1660247148 (I suggest opening on desktop. Mobile doesn't like it cause its big)
There's like 80 fics linked on the Faceman page alone lol. If there's any trouble with the link let me know!

Russia’s poor performance on the Ukrainian battlefield, and the growing belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threat shouldn’t be taken at face value, has emboldened Western analysts and Russian dissidents to publicly call for “decolonization” of Russia itself. They are referring here to the vast Russian Federation, the successor of the Soviet Union that consists of 83 federal entities, including 21 non-Slavic republics.
The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, an independent U.S. government agency with members from the U.S. House of Representatives, Senate, and departments of defense, state, and commerce, has declared that decolonizing Russia should be a “moral and strategic objective.” The Free Nations of Post-Russia Forum, comprising exiled politicians and journalists from Russia, held a meeting at the European Parliament in Brussels earlier this year and is advertising three events in different American cities this month. It has even released a map of a dismembered Russia, split into 41 different countries, in a post-Putin world, assuming he loses in Ukraine and is ousted.
Western analysts are increasingly pushing the theory that Russian disintegration is coming and that the West must not only prepare to manage any possible spillover of any ensuing civil wars but also to benefit from the fracture by luring resource-rich successor nations into its ambit. They argue that when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 the West was blindsided and failed to fully capitalize on the momentous opportunity. It must now strategize to end the Russian threat once and for all, instead of providing an off-ramp to Putin.
But many others see a rump Russia as a more severe threat to global peace and security and warn against emasculating an enemy that, even when weaker than the West militarily and economically, still possesses almost 6,000 nuclear warheads, armed militias, and vast resources trapped in a sparsely populated landscape bordering China.
Janusz Bugajski, a senior fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, has recently written a book called Failed State: A Guide to Russia’s Rupture. He argues that Western sanctions have squeezed Russian economy and there is a “disquiet in numerous regions over their shrinking budgets.” He advocates against providing security guarantees to Putin.
Others who agree with this thinking say Putin’s defeat in Ukraine will destroy his strongman cult and expose him as a weak leader. Once the elites in the non-Slavic republics sense Moscow is neither rich enough to fill their pockets nor militarily strong enough to crush their dissent, they will rise.
Sergej Sumlenny, director of the European Resilience Initiative Center in Berlin, and a former chief editor at Russian business broadcaster RBC-TV, said Putin has controlled the diverse nations by corrupting their elite and by instilling the dread of a Chechnya-style conflict.
In 1991, after the Soviet Union crumbled, 14 of Russia’s nations declared sovereignty. The bloody campaign in Chechnya a few years later was designed to discourage and dissipate independence movements, while Putin’s heavily centralized policies brought the supposedly autonomous republics firmly under Moscow’s control.
But the war in Ukraine has exposed Putin as a disillusioned, feeble man not worthy of the image he had cultivated, Sumlenny argued.
“He was seen [in Russia] as a leader who could defeat anyone, and Ukraine was seen as so weak that it would be defeated without any effort,” Sumlenny told Foreign Policy over the phone from Berlin. “But now, everyone, including the ruling elite in republics and regions, can see that Moscow neither has the money nor a strong army.
“If you are a mafia boss the worst thing that can happen to you is that your subordinates suddenly realize that you are not as strong as you claimed to be.”
There have been murmurs of discontent and resentment in parts of the Russian Federation for years. Five thousand miles away from Moscow, thousands in the Khabarovsk region in Russia’s Far East protested for months on end in 2020 against the arrest of their governor on spurious charges. They said the Kremlin stole their vote when it ordered the apprehension of Sergei Furgal, the man they elected to lead, and replaced him with a puppet.
The same year, protesters in the Republic of Bashkortostan agitated against limestone mining of what they deemed sacred hills. In 2018-19, people of the Arkhangelsk region, 700 miles north of Moscow, blocked roads and pitched tents to stop the Russian government from using their territory as a dumping ground for Moscow’s garbage.
In the Republic of Tatarstan, a slow-burn nationalistic movement has been growing over the imposition of Russian language and being forbidden to switch to the Latin alphabet from Cyrillic script, as Tatars fight for more cultural autonomy. Bashkortostan has also protested to protect their local language and used slogans such as “No Language Means No Nation.”
More recently, as Putin announced partial mobilization and recruited a disproportionately large number of conscripts from poorer regions, protests flared in different parts of the country. Free Buryatia Foundation has been set up to help reservists avoid the recruitment in the Republic of Buryatia, while the Dagestan and Chechen republics—the latter whose leader Ramzan Kadyrov has pledged loyalty to Putin—have both said they have already fulfilled their conscript quota. Women came out in the city of Yakutsk, in Sakha Republic, and chanted, “Let our children live!”
Experts cite protests in the past to illustrate that tensions have long existed in the region. Some believe that the current anti-mobilization protests will act as a unifier and galvanize independence movements across the Russian republics. That may be the case, but thus far the belief seems to rest more on hope, rather than on concrete intelligence or evidence of strong underground movements.
For every argument made by the proponents of imminent Russian disintegration, there are more counterarguments. The truth is that there is an information vacuum deliberately maintained by Russia; and yet absence of information doesn’t by itself justify the theory.
Experts point out that Russian citizens in the autonomous republics may fear Putin, but being anti-Putin does not necessarily mean being anti-Russia. And even for those states that genuinely desire to leave the Russian fold, there is no guarantee what follows will be democratic or friendly to the West. Experts fear many regions in the Russian Far East already lean toward China. Then there is the concern of civil wars and regional dictators fighting over Russian nukes.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky, former CEO of Yukos Oil Company and then a political prisoner in Russia, dismissed a peaceful disintegration of Russia and warned of regional wars. “First, Russia is tied into a single transport and economic mechanism,” Khodorkovsky said. He added that most of the resource rich regions don’t have access to the sea. “This sets up a potential conflict, between regions that have fewer people but vast resources and those that have a large population and ways of transporting resources.” These different regions will fight over borders and try to take control of nuclear weapons—a nightmare for the West.
Khodorkovsky added that another dictator will spring in Moscow in place of Putin to reclaim lost territories. “Will the West cope with 15 to 20 new states that are at war with each other and possess nuclear weapons and their means of delivery?” he asked. “Will the West cope with the dictator who will unite the country again, at the request of the army and the impoverished [Russian] population?”
Even though the Kremlin accuses the West of fomenting trouble inside Russia routinely, talk of Russian disintegration in Western capitals could raise nationalistic fervor and make Russians rally behind Putin. It could also be exploited by far-right supporters of Putin across Europe to strengthen anti-Americanism. Worse, it could feed the disinformation machinery and be quoted by conspiracy theorists online to build a parallel narrative.
Russia’s disintegration is “highly improbable,” said Joana Deus Pereira, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, Europe. Even such insinuations in the West will increase “Putin’s appeal,” she added, giving some perspective on how nationalists Russians might see them.
“After the Soviet Union collapsed Russians were told they were going to be closer to Europe,” she said. “That didn’t happen and it hurt Russian pride.
“In that context, look at Putin’s first speech where he said he would raise Russia from its knees, from humiliation. There is huge support for Putin from what we see and follow, and any talk or efforts to split Russia will only help him,” Deus Pereira said. Moreover, she said, the non-Slavic republics and regions don’t really want Russia to disintegrate, but only “recognition of their region, their own flag and more cultural independence within the Russian Federation.”
Both those who believe a Russian collapse is imminent and those who warn against it agree on one thing: The Russian Federation has never truly been, well, a federation. Decentralization is the key, Khodorkovsky said. Whenever the time comes for the West to lift sanctions, it must negotiate with a government that has received legitimacy from the regions.
“That will tip the scales in the direction of federalization,” Khodorkovsky said.

HATS! ~ Part 4
Miscellaneous Millinery
Tumblr media
Outside of her four television series, Lucille Ball had a career as a model and a movie star - in both worlds hats were an integral part of the overall look.  She also did numerous TV specials where her head was adorned.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball’s modeling career started at Hattie Carnegie, a salon where she worked as a hat model.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few of Ball’s iconic hats are displayed at the Lucy-Desi Museum in Jamestown, New York.
Tumblr media
In a 1950 print ad for Carling’s Red Cap Ale, Lucy wore two hats: a red satin jockey’s cap (the sponsor’s symbol), and a mortar board.
“Lucille Ball, too, has graduated to Carling’s - the light-hearted ale!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1938, Lucy modeled ladies' hats based on characters from Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Needless to say, she looked “charming”.
Tumblr media
Lucy’s got it in the bag!
Tumblr media
In 1937 Lucille Ball was seen modeling a Coronation Hat. The coronation of King George VI would take place at Westminster Abbey, London, on May 12, 1937. Ball did not attend, but as a young model, was widely seen in this Associated Press photo. As an interesting sidenote, more people watched the birth of Little Ricky on “I Love Lucy” than the televised Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, where Elizabeth receive the ultimate in hats - the jeweled St. Edward’s Crown.
Tumblr media
On March 26, 1961, Lucille Ball appeared on the cover of Family Weekly, a Sunday supplement to newspapers to model Easter hats.
Tumblr media
The inside article by Margaret Bell was titled “Lucy Loves Easter Hats” and featured Lucy and her daughter, Lucie Arnaz, trying on various bonnets.
Tumblr media
On Lucy Day at the 1964 World’s Fair, Lucy was accompanied by the world’s most famous hat-wearing gossip columnist, Hedda Hopper. Not to be undone, Lucy wore a blue straw hat to tour the grounds.
Tumblr media
In the International area, the People’s Republic of China adorned Lucy with a traditional pearl headdress.  At the Hawaiian Pavilion, another hat for Lucy - this one woven from palm leaves.

What do you think of Nyo America? Like how do you think she grew up and had to deal with societal norms? Do you think Arthur gave her an education, treat her fairly? If you feel comfortable, do you think she was treated differently than Alfred in any way when she was a kid?
I've talked about nyo America's adulthood here.
In terms of early life, I'll be honest 16 & 17 hundreds women's history is not my strong suit. However, I did watch the vhs box set of that BBC 'Colonial House' reality tv show on repeat as a tween so I'll do my best 😜
Anyway, I tend to headcanon most nations as intersex. With some notable exceptions, they do usually end up choosing a binary gender to present as, sometimes because they identify strongly as that gender, though more often because it makes interacting with their people easier. But regardless, gender for nations it's not like,,, a trait assigned at birth the way that it often is in say, modern American culture
All of that is to say that in my mind nyo America is essentially just Alfred if Alfred had chosen to present as a woman instead. She's not a separate character.
Which means early childhood is really not that different for nyo America. Interactions with human colonists are challenging. Being an immortal toddler in a small offshore colony isn't easy and we have court documents from that time indicating that at least one early American colonists was actively taken to court simply for being intersex, so that part of nationhood wasn't going to fly either (I highly recommend the essay "An Indentured Servant Identifies as Both Man and Woman: Jamestown 1629" by Mary Beth Norton if you want to learn more about this). I think it often goes under-stated just how much everyone in the early Jamestown and Plymouth colonies were up in each others business like all the fucking time. These people had a gossip mill running at full speed and there was no where to hide. Baby America simply wasn't going to escape from that unscathed.
Which is where Arthur steps in. Arthur squirrels baby America off to England where she's raised in a country manor, isolated from humans who might take issue with her.
For the sake of this ask we'll say that America begins to show an affinity for girlhood at an early age (5-6ish). She wants to be just like her aunt Bridget! If that means dresses and jewelry and she/her pronouns that's what it means.
Arthur isn't upset about this per say, in fact, America leaning so far towards one particular binary gender actually makes it much easier to take her out in public or to show her off around the royal court. It allows her to visit her own country more often as well. But Arthur does... kind of hope it's just a phase.
He knows perfectly well that presenting as a woman will be harder for America. He worries that it will get her taken advantage of on the world stage, and if anything he is maybe more insistent that America learn about things like politics, warfare, and how to fight as a result.
On the other hand, Arthur is also an English lord and he has appearances to keep up. If America is going to dress as a young lady she also needs to act like a young lady. She gets all the same schooling in politics that Alfred would have, but her education also has a much larger focus on traditionally feminine skill sets and being ladylike.
Tldr: I don't think her education was necessarily different but I do think her socialization around how to behave around other people would have been different.

Ideals of the Different - Chapter 11
Tumblr media
“Farlow!” Jeanne screeched, quickly catching up with the man as she began to walk beside him. He offered her a morning greeting as if he hadn’t acted an entitled ass to her friend. “Don’t ‘good morning’ me, why were you so rude?” He glanced at her from the corner of his eyes, shrugging slightly. “Verity is one of the women who needs to learn her place,” Farlow explained, not stopping in his trek to his planned destination. Jeanne scoffed. “And me? Am I not a woman who doesn’t know her place?” Farlow stopped at her words, turning on her with a cold gaze. “You have a place, Miss Gardner.” He spoke darkly, yet there was an undertone of respect. “You are the niece of our Lord Governor, his acting hand in his absence. Many look to you, especially the women, as you’ve shown to be someone who leads with dignity and equity.” Jeanne felt herself at a loss for words as she listened to him lecture her, overwhelmed by his commendations. “Verity Rutter is a convict who lives on the lowest social stature with a drunkard fool for a husband. That is the difference between you two.” “I’m the orphan of an English Lady who chose to run off on her wedding day to a Lord to be with a lower-class Scotsmen.” She gritted out. “Regardless, you are born of noble blood and a niece of a knighted Lord and behave of one of such station.” Farlow leaned down over her, trying to make sure she understood his words. “You may think you are lesser than you are, but you act as someone who you fear.” “I don’t fear—” “You do.” Farlow cut her off. “You fear being a Lady, being someone of rank and leadership, and everything that comes with it. The prestige, wealth, power…and marriage of convenience.” As he stared down at her unblinkingly. Jeanne returned his look, matching the ferocity of gaze just as strongly, not caring if their disagreement caught the attention of any passing colonisers. With gritted teeth and a scoff, Jeanne turned harshly, stomping back towards the comfort of Jamestown. “You know I’m speaking the truth, Miss Gardner!” Farlow yelled after her, but she didn’t give him the satisfaction of a response. She couldn’t. Ignoring the looks of residents she passed as she returned home, slamming the Yeardley residence door behind her and leaning against the wood with her eyes closed. “Jeanne, everything okay?” George Yeardley asked, eyeing his niece cautiously from his desk. She sighed, moving away from the doorway. When she spared a glance towards the master bedroom, George chuckled. “Temperance is out for a morning walk. Now, what has you so ruffled?” He signalled for her to come closer to him.

Yesterday my husband and I drove down to Jamestown for a short trip. We had tickets to see a comedian named Taylor Tomlinson and we'd been wanting to go to the I Love Lucy museum there for a long time anyway, so we decided to do both in one trip! Lucille Ball grew up there and her birthday was in August, so they're doing a comedy festival this whole week to celebrate her. First we went to see the statue of her at a park in a nearby town called Celoron on the foot of Chautauqua Lake.

Then we checked into our hotel and went to dinner in a room that was set up to look like Ricky Ricardo's Tropicana club, and it had a stage with instruments on it. There was a buffet with Cuban food (pulled pork, fish, baked beans, potatoes, and corn) and they had a screen with video clips of Ricky performing at the Tropicana on the show.

This morning we had breakfast and went to the museum. The first half was about Lucy and Desi's personal lives and how they started their careers. The second half was about the actual TV show, and it had a bunch of costumes and props from it and replicas of their apartments in New York City and Los Angeles.

Then we had dinner at the hotel we were staying at and went to Taylor Tomlinson's show. She was really funny and so was the guy who opened for her! His name was Dustin Nickerson. Taylor talked a lot about being single, dating, and having married friends. There was a big screen on each side of the stage, so you could really see her up close.

Tomorrow we're going to leave around 11 and drive back home. We might stop in Buffalo to have lunch with my husband's friend on the way. We should be home around 4 or 5.

A Guide to : Jamestown, California
Tumblr media
When you head to Tuolumne County from the Valley, Jamestown is going to be the first town you can stop at or pass through to your destination. It's a charming town where all the buildings remind you of the "old west." Main street is probably the spot where you'll spend most of your time.
Touristy Things • Railtown 1897 state historic park is a really cool park. It is $5 for a guided tour or walk at your own pace. Since we went during the off season, we were able to have a guided tour. It was really cool because we were able to get close to the steam engines in the roundhouse. If you come during their peak season, you can take a 45-minute train ride. They also have a spooky train ride during October and the polar express for the Christmas season. many movies and TV shows used steam engine #3 [Back to the Future 3 fans, anyone!?] which is housed in the roundhouse. It's a neat place to learn about railroad history! 🚂
We did not do this because we figured it out later, so.. we recommend you do this! On main street is the "walk of fame" where you will find plaques of movies that used trains. Follow these plaques to the Railtown 1897 park, explore the park, then walk back.
The Jamestown museum and jail are free to explore. They both open at 12p. Many of the items in the museum are artifacts from a family that lived in Jamestown.
Shop • If you enjoy antique shops, main street in Jamestown is the place to be! There were quite a few to wander around in.
On the List • We tried to eat at the Jamestown Hotel for my birthday because their menu looked ah•mah•zing but... they closed at 2p instead of 8p 🥴 we didn't make it back this trip, but it's on the list! Our Airbnb hosts suggested the baked brie at the National Hotel for a snack + to pair it with a glass of bubbly [if you drink!]. This sounded amazing but we were full from breakfast when we were wandering around Jamestown... more reasons to come back to visit!!
Overall, it's a cute little town + recommend taking a stroll down main street! We discovered a Mexican restaurant, winery + brewery while we were walking, so y'know we have to come back to check it all out 🤪
