TAHITI THROWBACKS...
These two shots really bring the experience of sailing around French Polynesia home to me.
With long, two day stays at most of the islands we visited, and only 330 passengers on board each cruise on the Paul Gauguin, there was no rush to go ashore first thing every day. There were no great cities to dutifully traipse around.
Castles and cathedrals are pretty thin on the ground across French Polynesia as a whole. So, our sightseeing took on much more of a languid, loafing about kind of vibe. Beach days were peachy days.
So, a couple of post breakfast mimosas became something of a ritual most mornings. If I look chilled and content in that first picture- well, that's because I am.
The second picture was taken from one of our tenders- the 'Gauguin Water Beetles' as I nicknamed them.
Despite being a boutique style ship, the Paul Gauguin herself is far too big to dock at any of the islands, other than in Tahiti. Thus, we were in and out of the ship's tenders on a regular basis during our visits to and from the shore.
The local fishermen used to race after us in our wake. The wash from the propellers always threw fish to the surface. That's what the guy in the outrigger was hoping for as he paddled like an Olympic champ...

The lists no one asked for 2021! #Books📚 #Chesapeake by #JamesMichener was one of my favorite books I’ve ever read. I checked out a collection of poems because I’m super deep. I read a few horror anthologies to make sure #HorrorFromTheHighDive is the best that it can be. #TheShining and #DoctorSleep were a classic and a relatively new #StephenKing work and I enjoyed them both a lot. #HowNotToDie is a great tool. #PermanentMidnight is a pitch black memoir. #TheShards is the latest work by #BretEastonEllis and so far only available via audiobook on his #patreon. It was a wild ride. SOUTH PACIFIC SUNRISE; A TWA THROWBACK...
Another day in the South Pacific, and another pre dawn wake up call. On a stunningly sculpted November morning, the Paul Gauguin is beetling across a seascape speckled with low, blackened islands that resemble some kind of mythical, half submerged sea monsters.
These small atolls are known as 'motus' in the South Pacific vernacular. They are typified by tracts of dense, central shrubbery ringed by taut, tremendous palm trees. Swathes of blinding white sands define a perimeter, perennially kissed by warm, gently lapping Pacific waves.
The low, languid motus are a massive contrast to the regional, Polynesian show ponies such as Bora Bora, Moorea, and Tahiti itself. Those larger islands are majestic, mountainous, and more heavily populated. Their infrastructure is also considerably more developed. I added another title to my #VHS collection today—another film, like The Alamo and Raintree County, whose uncut #roadshow versions are only to be found on aging videotapes. (Technically, there is a DVD of the roadshow version, but apparently no restoration work was done on the additional footage.) That film is George Roy Hill's #Hawaii, adapted from the James Michener novel and one of the highest grossing films of 1966, a 190-minute epic about Christian missionaries in 19th-century Hawaii, with Max von Sydow, Julie Andrews, Richard Harris, an early role for Gene Hackman, Carroll O'Connor, the film debut (as an extra) of Bette Midler, and Jocelyn LaGarde as Queen Malama. LaGarde, a Tahitian woman who spoke no English and learned her lines phonetically, and went to win a Golden Globe and receive an Oscar nomination for what was her only film appearance—the only performer in history so to do. I watched much of the film this evening, verifying to my delight that the original overture, intermission, entr'acte, and exit music were included here, and noting that the image quality is not too bad for a 27-year-old tape. (Some sequences, presumably the excised footage from the roadshow, do look noticeably weaker, but for 30 cents I'm not complaining too much.) It's an odd film in some respects as well, encompassing incest, gratuitous native nudity, epidemics, hardline evangelism, ostentatious sneezing, and Max Von Sydow forcing Julie Andrews to eat a banana.
