COMMUNITY QUESTIONS!

This may be a bit of an embarrassing post, but if any of you wouldn’t mind reading and answering a few questions I would be extremely appreciative!

I have had Tumblr for a very long time, but I have never used it for posting. However I have been a writer, and have often used this app for reading purposes! (mostly fanfics and such). I would like to start writing here, but i’m still unsure on what is important to add/have as a writer on this platform. I am a JJK fan, so I aim to write fanfics, one shots, smut, fluff, practically all genre’s (all probably being anime related). Below I will add a segment on what I do know vs. what I do not (or am confused about) and I would love if any of you wouldn’t mind answering or having some advice to give.

WHAT I KNOW:

I am aware that Tumblr is a so-called home to some very good and experienced writers, as well as mostly used for it’s aesthetic purposes and its vast options. I have noticed that the majority of writers specify the genre at the beginning of their posts, as well as the word count and warnings (if there are any). I am also aware that, like most posts, specific hashtags pertaining to your topic are used. I see that most writers also copyright at the bottom of their works, and that some even have masterlists or links that can direct you to other segments of their work. I have also noticed that some authors have a tagged post for their own information.

WHAT I DO NOT KNOW:

As stated above I noted that this platform is notorious for its aesthetics, and as for that I have to ask: does everyone pick their own style or color scheme and go with it for every post, and everything? If so is it okay to change it up? Another thing I must ask is about the warnings. I have seen CW (content warning I assume) a lot, and was wondering if it is used for all content, or just NSFW content. If so, what and all do you have to specify? What should mostly be specified in your warnings in general? I also don’t know if word count is necessary, as well as don’t know how to get it, but that is something I probably won’t have a problem figuring out on my own. I know that for just starting out I don’t have the need for a master list or anything of the sort, but would it be a good thing/or is it necessary to have some sort of introduction post? If so, what information is the most necessary to have? (I assume name, age, and pronouns being most important). Even then though, I am unsure on how to link things if I were to get a master list in the near future (I know, It’s kinda embarrassing and I apologize..)

There are probably more that I cannot think on top of my head at this moment, but if you have read this far I appreciate you very much. I know this is probably an embarrassing and annoying post, but we all start somewhere so I assumed it wouldn’t hurt to ask. I also did not know which tags to add to this post, hence why I chose JJK ones. I think I have finally slowly internalised the fact that motivation is a feeling, an emotion just like any other. It comes and goes as it please.

And well my study schedule cannot change to adjust to my bouts of motivation.

The key for me, I realised, was discipline.

Yes it’s hard and sucky and I hate it. But I do it anyway. Because if I don’t, the regret that I feel later on makes me hate myself. And I fear that regret so much.

So for me its a choice - I can either suffer the pain of discipline or I can suffer the pain of regret. And if I’m going to be in pain anyway, why the heck should I not gain something out of it?

So I sit down to study.

Sure I also add things that will make it easy for me to do that. Because I, I love studying. Once I start, I really really enjoy the subjects I have chosen and the concepts I understand. I love learning.

But for me the really hard part is sitting down to study. So I work on that…

1. I just sit down. On time. With a schedule that I follow everyday so that I exert less mental strength trying to convince myself. I just know its time for me to study if I follow my schedule.

2. I am all about the little things, all about feeling good and in control. So I do that. I make a big and aesthetic affair out of sitting down to study. I prepare myself a snack and get myself something to drink and set my study area and books - I create a visual setup that appeals to me and makes me want to study.

3. I limit how many times I get up. I know people say that our attention span is short and we should use the pomodoro technique, but personally speaking it just does not work for me. I find it hard to get in the study zone but really easy to stay once I am there and concentrating and so taking many breaks actually really distracts me and take me out of my study zone. So I take less breaks and I make sure I already have everything I need with me before I sit down to study so that I do not have to get up.

4. I make the process fun for me. I know my way of studying, my strengths and my weaknesses. So I use them to my advantage. I am a very conceptual learner, I am a visual learner, I am prefer to write things down to slow myself and understand, I prefer my study material in my own language and my own way of explaining, I am a very organised person. I am very bad at memorising random facts that have no logic. So I incorporate all these in my notes - I make my notes very organised and aesthetic notes that help me memorise. I add diagrams and flowcharts of my own explanations. I use mnemonics that relate to me and are easy for me to remember (they are usually jokes that make people thing I have a very broken sense of humour).

5. I do not study in groups. I know again this is very controversial specially for med school but when I am understanding a new topic, I find the presence of people around me very distracting. I prefer to study in my room by myself. On the other hand, once I have studied the topic, I benefit from group discussions. I sit down with my friends and make them understand the topic… this helps them and it helps me. Teaching someone else is a very good way of revising for me and their questions make me think and understand parts I may have missed while studying.

6. I plan what I am going to study the next day, the might before. I put my pen on the first page of the topic or chapter or whatever and shut the book. This way I know I simply have to open my book and get down to study because everything else has been done before. It’s almost like I get rid of my possible excuses before hand. I decrease the resistance.

I feel sitting down and understanding your way of studying is important for this very reason. So that you can make your plan and study accordingly. It decreases so much resistance and makes you so sure of your ways.

It makes me enjoy studying and study better all the way!

There’s a lot of assumptions here I don’t agree with. The west is embracing new jeans and they haven’t had physical promo like bts did. The reason why bts is not getting really embraced by the gp is cos the music they promote to the west is generic meaningless boy band music which is very unrelatable. And authenticity is a big thing in the west. If they gave Mots7 or any of their albums before that the level of promo dynamite or butter had, they would have gotten more of the gp appreciation.

Hybe is not just only promoting jk, but they were also hampering other members promo. Look at how lackadaisical they were with shipping jh, Jin & RM albums. How poorly they scheduled Face, the many issues we faced during Face era that jk never experienced. We had to tag them for basic things that a label should already know about. How they shaded jm in their own article and are several times refusing to acknowledge his no1. It goes beyond promoting one member and more into trying to stifle the rest to present an image the label has the power to make a pop star. And is probably also why they give this promo to songs the label premade and not the artist’s authentic music that the artists makes

Thanks for the ask, anon. I'll share my thoughts to your ask in parts: (and sorry for the long essay in advance, kindly read, i swear i get to a point lol)

Western GP (New Jeans vs BTS): Can I be very very honest? New Jeans music is extremely catchy and has that hyperpop element that western audiences eat up. With rise of artists like PinkPantheress, hyperpop is gaining even more popularity, and Y2K aesthetic is back. NewJeans are all that- the music and aesthetic both. I'm not sure what were their digital promo methods, but perhaps playlisting on streaming platforms? And the collab with Apple was very strategic too. Let's also not forget they have english chorus in their songs and went viral on tiktok. New Jeans are in top 5 kpop groups in tiktok. I cannot speak for NewJeans much, because I have only listened to their songs, and do not follow them.

Let's talk about OT7 songs promoted in the US first- as in Dynamite, Butter and PTD. Let's take Dynamite - a very well crafted product, basically a completely American song with American references and MJ inspired choreo. It was meant to catch western attention and did its job. But the problem was- it was a single, not an album and it didn't really showcase the range of their artistry. Yet it did the job of exponentially increasing the fanbase. It was pandemic time, people were in their rooms, with internet and Youtube. Those who were meant to find BTs, found them.

Could BTS have achieved long lasting attention with MOTS 7 promotion? Honestly, it's hard to say. BTS's music is not conventional. You will never hear a BTS song and think- 'oh! i've heard something similar', in fact, sometimes it is even difficult to comprehend what genre their songs are. A different language, a different genre, 7 different voices, with no two albums that sound similar, no viral tiktok songs. Do you know how difficult it is to crack the western market? It is a lot of information to feed. I will come back to the MOTS 7 issue later.

How does one build a fanbase for a band like BTS?

BTS's popularity and long lasting fanbase has always been formed by the story they sell. Bang PD, right from the start, wanted to show the world 7 authentic, real boys who wanted to share their original thoughts, happiness, feelings and struggles. Added to this, their underdog story. Yes, their struggles from older days are all real and valid, but knowing that story makes you relate to them. Because, aren't we all some type of underdog before we achieve something big? People have often been drawn to BTS via word of mouth, friends, 'i just wanted to know their names' and ending up watching the Taylor Guide, 'my wife took me to their concert and now all my friends love BTS', 'they taught me how to love myself' etc etc. BTS has always inducted fans who were searching for something in their lives, or are curious, or are 'willing to learn'. You cannot sit an American down and show them a BTS US interview and ask them to listen to the album and make them a forever fan. Do you know how people in the west don't watch an international film just because they refuse to read subtitles? The language barrier might be easy for armies to overlook because we are invested, but it's not easy to convince a monolingual westerner to start reading subtitles to get into an entirely different fandom.

To sum up my points above:

BTS sell their story and relatability and group dynamics, which is not possible just through basic promotion. One has to dive into BTS voluntarily and go through the plethora of content, one by one.

BTS songs are usually not tiktok viral for some reason, considering how big of an act they are. Barely any bts tracks have gone viral- BST remix, black swan instrumental (maybe), PTD dance challenge to name a few. I don't know the reason why because I have barely ever used tiktok. Because armies only interact with each other on that app and even then, they don't use bts songs as audio.

The pre-requisite is to be backed by a western label for radio, playlist, western ads etc. Because the US won't allow an outsider label to make money off their GP, simple. It just takes away the money that could have stayed with western labels.

Coming to individual member (JK) promoted in the US: I did mention in the post of mine you have linked- that Golden lacked depth. Quoting my own words directly - " While they paid attention to heavy promo, charts and playlisting for Golden, they failed to create a connection with the music- which seems highly non-personal and lacking in depth and has a non-interesting concept. The promo did do the work of making jk a common name, showcasing his talents and introducing him to the industry. But for a lasting impact, they have to create better stories with the music. Idc, army are acting too defensive when people are disappointed that he didn't write his songs. It's okay to not write, but the very least singers can do is connect to song meanings and relate to personal experiences during the promos."

And anon, you are right, to have a lasting impression in the west, one needs authenticity. Actually let me list down the non-compromisable parameters required for success in the US-

Affiliation to US based label/Connection to industry mammoths. (Give money to US/US based part of the company)

English song/ lots of english lyrics + recognizable genre

Character/ brand of the artist (which the audience calls 'authenticity', but is actually the 'brand' of the artist created by the label. People hear the artist's name and know what to expect. You hear Olivia Rodrigo and you know you will get teenage, angsty, heartbreak tracks.)

Last but not the least- tiktok push. (somehow extremely essential today)

Hybe gave JK 1,2 and 4 from above list. They tried to build up on his character, but it is incomplete and lacks depth. The character they have built for him is- Korean hearthrob who can sing and dance, inspired by Michael Jackson, the ONE member to look out from the massive band BTS (Justin Timberlake trajectory). They gave him catchy songs directed at het women, dressed him up in clothes fitting that image and made him perform live at TSX. Thanks to the massive ads and promo, people know him now. But unless he shows the true depth of his character and brand to the GP, a lot of people (non-army) won't look forward to his future works. And whether we like it or not, him not being being able to interact freely and share his thoughts in english in the interviews is still a drawback for him. (personally, i wish that was not true).

Even when some celebrities of colour get the limelight in US pop culture, it's because they are connected to the US. They emerge as this messiah for their 3rd world country, can speak english and work for US labels and production companies. The US gets to keep the money and awards, and also gets to flaunt 'diversity'. It has always worked like that when the west opened the doors for a POC.

MOTS 7 would not get GP acceptance without being backed by a US label. And would a US label ever accept a full Korean album with all Korean artists? Why would they invest in an artist of a foreign language? Can Bang PD's assistant call up US radio and get them to play Dionysus? No. But if Scooter does it, they will pay attention.

An English speaking artist can convey their feelings through words on a radio, but how will a Korean artist do that on the radio with no subtitles, to an audience who refuses to read subs in the first place? You know how the US GP reacted when Parasite movie won an Oscar, right?

Ever since 2017, BTS have tried for that hot 100, did everything they could, backed by their Korean company, tons of US interviews and what not. But at the end of the day, they had to compromise with meaning and depth and churn out an all english, MJ inspired, disco pop track which finally gave them their #1. I am not downplaying the significance of Dynamite, or saying that it's a bad song. But I simply mean that only a marked shift in genre and strategy gave them that #1.

You are absolutely right. The only properly done solo work was that of Yoongi I feel. He knows his priorities and influence on the company, and has always had a very strong connection to both inside and outside the company. I'm not sure if D-Day was mismanaged, though am sure some yoongi biased army will have things to point out. All the other members have faced mismanagement. Jimin the most, I feel. Even recently, there's a Weverse article where they wrote that "jhope led the contemporary dance with Jimin", in spring day. All respect to Jhope where he deserves because he is the dance leader indeed, but he did not lead the contemporary dance in spring day, as amazing as he is, respectfully.

I felt the same thing. I share the same sentiment with you here. The way they downplayed Like Crazy's achievements was disappointing and hurtful. That day it became crystal clear to me that Bighit did NOT see that achievement coming. None of the member's releases was meant to make this much noise, not before their Scooter backed project. They grossly underestimated the extent army can go even for 1 member (arguably the 2 most popular members in US are Jimin and Jungkook). Honestly the type of promotions JK got would never be given to other members because the other members would NOT agree to singing english songs that have zero depth and zero connection to their own feelings. JK was willing to take up that offer because.. well it's his choice. It was a golden platter, why not take it up? His image is moldable, he can sing whatever he is given and has the talent to pull it off. No matter whom we bias, JK has been the center of almost all BTS songs, a non-replaceable voice. But at the end of the day, the reason he was the one member who Bighit wanted to stand-out from the group was, it was his consent and agreement to everything the company planned for him.

I do wonder what it would have been like if all members received that kind of promo with their own artistry. But the entire premise of them being backed by Scooter/US collapses because they refuse to sing songs written by Scooter's writers. So I also agree with anon when they said "And is probably also why they give this promo to songs the label premade and not the artist’s authentic music that the artists makes."

Instead, Hybe is focusing on the other kpop groups under them. It's like the 6 members were just given their own individual management teams to manage their solo works lol. At least, let's be glad that the 6 members are getting full creative freedom for their work. I just want their solo works to be better managed. And I hope their managers, and planners, especially those on Jimin's side have learnt their lesson and come up with a foolproof promo for their next projects. I don't expect anything from BangPD, that man has been showing a certain pattern I don't want to discuss. (solely because i refuse to think what goes on in his mind).

As fans, all we can do is support the solo works we feel connected to and support BTS as a whole in future OT7 projects.

life in your 20s - about drinks and decisions

Now that my exams are coming closer and I spend every day of the week either working or studying and my only outlet is to work out or writing (which is not going well), I thought I should write about something that is all too familiar.

Life in the twenties. 

I’ve wrote this article before - three drafts and 2 cups of coffee later I was fed up and closed my laptop. I decided to come back to it.

I think the fact that it needed this fourth draft shows how life in your twenties is. 

When I asked around on how the 20s are, I mostly got answers like: confusing, depressing, challenging or just straight up filled with anxiety.

I also got answers like: exciting, vibrant, adventurous.

Obviously, every chapter in your life is filled with all sorts of emotions but I want to emphasize this "second puberty" you enter without even realizing it. 

When we were younger, we didn’t know what we were going to be but we dreamt about this grown up life, your own money and apartment.

We used to buy center shocks, now we’re out for dinner and drinks.

We used to dream about furnishing our first apartment, now we’re hit with the reality of furniture prices (why are carpets and mirrors SO expensive?!).

We used to beg our mom to buy cereal, now we sigh at the prices in the store.

We used to jump up and down when we got letters in the mail with our name on it, now we’re scared to open them because it’s either spam or another bill.

We used to have crushes but instead of being fifteen and goofy, we’re really in love but break up or don’t even try because you work too much, you study too much, you don’t want to settle etc.

From hand holding-relationships and first times to trust issues and situationships.

Or we commit to relationships, being scared that we should have spent more time being single and constantly questioning what could have been.

Somehow, you still have pimples and crushes but now it’s that - on top of responsibility and possibility and bills and existential crises.

Of course, life in your twenties is also liberating. I’ve realized that the choices are mine to make, I have to defend myself and my opinions less and I have opportunities - to work, to study, to travel, to eat chips for dinner.

I can buy silly little things with my money and spend my time however I intend to.

The problem is, in your twenties, you constantly need to make decisions. What job/major to pick, what hobby, what future, what to eat (THREE times a day, EVERY day - pisses me off) and some decisions are harder than others. 

You can’t always do what your heart desires, sometimes you cannot take that trip or get that job. Sometimes you can’t have that person, or rather, you shouldn’t. So you make a decision. And you live with it. 

It’s weird, I’m fine with the decisions I make but only because I made the sensible choice - not because I did what I want.

What makes everything so confusing, is that everybody tells you you can be anything. And you start to spiral, wanting to be everything and anything, changing opinions and paths and being driven by the fear of missing out. 

Everything is aesthetic or groundbreaking or inspiring or different or special and somewhere in between those adjectives are you - chasing or being chased?

I get it. 

The 20s are a grey area. It’s okay to be confused and have no idea about who you are. It’s also okay to have babies and marry (in whatever order you prefer). It’s okay to have a normal 9-5 job and not be a drop shipper or OF model making bag. - I've been getting a lot of feet related DMs lately.

It’s okay to have a weird love life or no love life at all. It’s okay to wait for the one. 

Not everyone understands you, not everyone will benefit your life. 

The point is - i think - to soak it all in. To surround yourself with people who understand you.

So whatever feeling the 20s give you - fear, excitement, pressure - it's meant to be felt and experienced.

And then, one day you'll be thirty and just when the existential crisis of your 20s has stopped, the 30 will do you dirty.

Kidding... I think.

My god, this is the FOURTH draft and I still hate it. I have a million things on my mind - Laundry, exams, dinner plans, when i have to be at the office tomorrow and most importantly: Why can't I finish this fucking article? 

I can’t just post this unfinished, sucky piece of ass and call it a day.

the sleeping with sirens songs are basically the same thing in that the lyrics remind me of jay, but i just wanted to bring up a trophy fathers trophy son in particular because that song has personally victimized me and the amount of scrobbles i have for it on last.fm is frankly, embarassing

i actually went and looked for this, it's 160 scrobbes and my #18 most played song of all time. so i guess it's not as bad as i thought but still.

melanite martinez i wasn't as sure about adding because i had a very specific vibe i wanted for the playlist i wasn't sure she fit (that's also why i didn't add any of my other favorite musicians like pierce the veil, fall out boy, or more mcr, like my brain just wouldn't let me.... there was A Vibe i needed and i think it was just traumatized girlboss which, as much as i love those bands. they don't capture it ((i don't know why sleeping with sirens is an exception to this kellin quinn is just a magical man okay))) but i like portals more than her old stuff and the two songs i added off of cry baby just fit jay's story i think

and finally the halsey stuff i was the least sure about adding not because i didn't think it fit the vibe but because i just started listening to halsey like this past week and im not as familiar with her songs and the themes of them as i am with the other stuff i added so i didn't wanna add something and its like actually a huge mischaracterization but i thought the playlist needed more variety ad i figured i can always remove stuff later on (or add more as i listen to halsey more) but yeah. i do wanna say i think i am not a woman i'm a god fits jay very well

To be Expected - David Finlay Op-ed

I'm not too sure what to call this: a Op-ed, intelligent rant, infodump, sort of an Essay, retrospective?

I'm not going to make this intro too long but basically: I have written a thing on David Finlay inspired by rambles on a discord server and the recent developments with him and Jay and Bullet Club. I have liked David for a while now and I have a lot of thoughts on his character arc and possible reasoning as to why he did what he did.

If that sounds interesting but you don't have time to read 1400 words on that, here's a quick summary.

TL;DR: David Finlay's character arc in NJPW involved him trying to deal with the two chips on his shoulder: his heritage and his temper. He went from 'desperate to be different' to 'able to coexist healthily' before regressing into what we see now. I also talk about what led to this regression and all of the factors involved (continual failure, words hurt Ospreay). I discuss David's relationship with Jay and how his finale in Japan was the last straw for David, leading him to attack at Battle in the Valley.

First things first: David Finlay did not start out in NJPW as a Young Lion. He actually came into the promotion as an already fully trained wrestler, having been trained by his father Fit. He gave up all of that knowledge and started again after a match against Jushin Thunder Liger who Fit had wrestled in New Japan back in '91.

David's heritage is something that has bothered him for years. Especially during his young lion and early post-graduation days, it was the big chip on his shoulder. Of course there was the element of everyone already having pre-conceptions and expectations of you but that wasn't the problem for David. His main problem was that he couldn't just be 'David', commentary would always mention (both English and Japanese) his father, grandfather, great-grandfather before him. So, when David graduated he tried to make himself as distinct as possible.

How did he do this without dropping the Finlay name?

He didn't wrestle like Fit (specifically the brawler part which we'll get to) and aesthetically he kept himself separate through different gear, hair, facial hair and even the inclusion of eyeliner for a short period of time.

The other chip on his shoulder was related to his heritage: his temper. Finlay's are quick to anger and like to brawl, Fit's nickname was literally the Belfast Bruiser. However as a young lion and later a babyface hanging out with Taguchi, you cannot be a bruiser. So, David wasn't and that was another thing he had to tussle with.

Over the years, David did make progress in these areas.

When it came to his heritage there is of course the Shillelagh but an item that he introduced earlier was the spiked leather jacket. His first one from 2018 he has passed onto Brogan (his younger brother) and he's had versions of a spiked leather jacket since then. This style of jacket being a reference to something that Fit wore during his WCW run. Speaking of Brogan, you could see his increased interaction with his brother including on some NJoA shows as a acceptance of the Finlay dynasty (even if that included Brogan getting squished by Jonah, whoops).

So what about his temper? well for this I have 2 matches to compare.

Jay White vs David Finlay, Road to the New Beginning, 5th of Feb 2018, US Championship match.

We will focus on David's relationship with Jay later but for now I want to look at the end of this match. David snaps, Jay's treatment of him from reappearance as the Switchblade until now takes its toll. While Jay is downed David grabs a chair from under the ring, bringing it in even in the presence of Red Shoes. He very nearly almost hits Jay over the head with it but ends up stopping himself. This gives Jay the opportunity to win the match.

2. Juice Robinson vs David Finlay, G1 Climax 32, 26th of Jul 2022.

In this match David is certainly much more willing to be violent and less concerned about being a pure babyface but only because of Juice's provocation. Juice starts it by targeting David's shoulder and he's the one who tries to hit David with the US title first. David even breaks his pin on Juice after hitting him with the Shillelagh to actually hit a move before picking up the win.

I like this comparison because both of these matches are ones where David is facing someone who was once very close to him shortly after they turned heel. Both times Jay and Juice try to convince David not to follow through on his violence (Jay just looks at him, possibly saying something, Juice verbally begs him).

We can see how David has grown and progressed, accepting his heritage and his short fuse as just who he is and even managing to use them to his advantage. 2022 was a good year for David. He had a successful G1 debut and very nearly almost won in a US title match. But, after being around in NJPW since 2015, 'good' and 'very nearly' had become insufficient for David.

There are so many possibilities as to why David is like how he is now. I wouldn't be surprised if it is all of them coming together to finally break the guy. Maybe the things Ospreay said to him during that press conference weighed on his mind. His absent father, his championship wins being dictated by other people and in turn the absence in actual singles glory to his name. Maybe those big wins he experienced in the G1 started an addiction for David, and with his loss to Ospreay came a desperation to experience that big win feeling again. Maybe David came to the realisation after the Ospreay match that he needed to change. This David Finlay was a loser and that would never change, so why stick with it?

Enter Jay White.

Quick Jay and David history lesson: David, Jay and Juice were in the same young lion class. They were a close knit trio but Jay and David were in particular quite close which is obvious enough from the various pictures, gifs and twitter exchanges floating around on this site. When Jay returned from excursion, both David and Juice mentioned that Jay never told them anything about his debut and attack on Tanahashi. Jay found David and Juice beneath him now, having gone off on excursion and now getting to face Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom. David and Juice didn't even get excursions.

David has an unfortunate trend associated with him which is 'his best friend indirectly turns heel on him by attacking Tanahashi' as Juice also did the same as Jay last year. This certainly left David with a bad taste in his mouth, he was so insignificant to these two, two of the guys he was closest in NJPW with, that they won't even directly turn heel on him? What does that say about him? or the friendships he's tried to create with fellow members of Hontai and other face groups?

Whenever he saw fit, Jay would bully David. He would lord his sheer number of wins against David over him (even when most of them were from the young lion days). When David finally did get a win over Jay he made it sound like the world was ending ("I just lost to David Finlay? Is this real right now?"). Even in Impact, Jay busied himself with continuing to bully David. Jay was also very likely the one who convinced Juice to dump David and join the Bullet Club.

In short: Jay was an annoying dickhead who nobody outside of the Bullet Club liked.

Then after losing the IWGP Championship in a situation where all of the odds were against him, Jay finds a scapegoat in Hikuleo. He lashes out and seriously threatens the career of an up and coming star in New Japan basically because the guy embarrassed him. He in turn also sabotages his own career because he's stopped caring about wrestling in Japan as he's done everything there is to do. He doesn't care about the fans or his fellow wrestlers including his own faction mates who would be leaderless. He loses and...everyone forgets everything that Jay did up to that point? Hikuleo doesn't care, Tanahashi doesn't care, the crowd doesn't care, Gedo doesn't even care.

Imagine how David felt watching this go down. Hoping to see the man he once could call a best friend who became a dastardly person, made David's life a living hell for years and stole his best friend get his just deserts. But instead he's allowed to leave unscathed and everyone is all of a sudden going to miss him so much?

Whether David was contacted by Gedo beforehand or not, he witnesses the same thing happen at Battle in the Valley and does not let Jay get his moment in the sun.

Now we're at present day. David has regressed when it comes to the relationship with his heritage, having said that all of the generations before him were losers and now he will be the Finlay to make this dynasty something to be proud of. As mentioned after attacking Jay, David has never felt truly at home anywhere and I believe he partially blames his father for that one. He's accepted his short temper and penchant for violence completely and utterly. Now he's very quick to anger in many situations not yet seen before (lashing out at fans and their signs, young lion attacks and hostile tags).

As David begins to become a more important character in New Japan, I think it is important to look back on his arc in this promotion so far as to understand what is happening now and what may happen in the future. I hope this was helpful for someone out there, or at least was an interesting read!

Do you relate to your favorite character(s)?

Yes and no.

My fondness for China and Norway isn't one based on their characters because I haven't fleshed them out (yet) in my head. I have no idea how to write for either of them! I genuinely would love to spend a day cooking, painting, or just talking with Yao. I yearn for platonic companionship and Yao isn't chaotic and we share similar interests. Our aesthetic interests are very different, but oh well!

I don't know what Lukas has to offer tbh, he's entirely eye candy to me (sobbing).

My fondness for France and Ukraine has to do with self imposed headcanons.

My Francis is honestly probably ooc -- but I don't care. I have taken these guys and run away with them. A lot of my Hetalia writing is Human AU because I have a hard time connecting with immortal creatures as someone who cannot see what even the next year of their own life looks like. I guess what Francis and I share is a fondness for food and art (like with Yao), but those aren't activities I would want to do with Francis. We can both be dramatic, I will over-dress just to go out with a friend, and we're both a bit pathetic. While my Francis isn't like early canon France (you know what I mean...), he's still a romantic. I am not.

I don't think it's a necessarily rare headcanon, but I see Miss Ukraine as fat. She's plus size to me and that's something we share. I've been wanting to write a Kateryna centric oneshot about the difficulties and mental struggles that come with shopping as a fat person, but I haven't been in a reading/writing mindset recently and this topic would be a bit taxing on me. One day, though!! I'm still formulating my characterization of her... CanUkr oneshot is STILL in development hell.

TLDR: Yes because I impose bits of myself onto Francis and Kateryna for RP and writing purposes and also for comfort. No because a good handful of my favorites (including some not named) are just little guys I'd like to put in a shoebox and shake around.

10. How long have you been in the fandom? What's your lore?

In 7th grade a friend told me I might like Hetalia because I liked geography and history was my strongest subject in school. I cannot remember when exactly I checked it out, but I definitely was into by Spring 2014. I literally have emails from back then of memes we exchanged...

My best friend and I met online at the end of that school year and we actually started talking because he played this video over skype screen share. Fast forward to the summer and I'm drawing, writing fic, and we made our Hetalia Instagram account. There were three of us. It was essentially just a repost account because we were all in middle school. I never really interacted with others from the fandom other than the two friends I ran the account with, both of whom I still talk to <3

Our instagram account died off sometime around 2018. We deleted it around 2020-2021.

I came back to Hetalia by a freak accident. I was going through my old google drive and rediscovered the three-way-POV fic my friends and I wrote and immediately ran into our group chat. It was a bad fic. Basically Hetalia in the setting of Outlast meets FNAF vibes. Yes, it was a Wattpad fic... (now deleted). We made the joke of rewriting it, but that thought only lasted for one night. Then out of curiosity I got back into listening to the official character songs, and that's what did it for me... (shoutout to "Aiyah, 4,000 Years," "Mein Gott," "Overflowing Passion," "Maji Kandou ☆ Hong Kong Night," and the Hetaloid song "Brother Complex").

Got back into reading fic. Somehow I went through my original stint in the fandom without reading "Gutters" and that's what pulled me back into fanfic. Made an A03. Eventually figured, why the hell not, and made a Hetalia Tumblr so I could stop using my personal account.

I did have that hiatus, but I guess I could say I've been into Hetalia for 10 years now, which is nuts. I definitely had a period of regret and revulsion from 2019-2022, but still kept up with "oh, they made a new season" or revisiting some old art.

4. What's a headcanon you need to work out?

A lot of my headcanons have to do with Human AU FACE fam because I use them to cope with things, but I guess something that's been on my mind lately is the Tudor dynasty. My senior thesis, far before I got back into Hetalia, was actually supposed to be about the Tudors, but I abandoned it for something else. I recently got a book about the entire dynasty for my birthday and have yet to take a peek at it. I would love to write a fic where France or Marianne visits England over several Christmases to explore the relationship of Arthur/Francis or Alice/Marianne as England & France's relationship changes through the changing of the monarchs and especially as Henry VIII cycles through wives like calendars. I have to do research about it, though. I need to see how realistic it would be considering the on-again-off-again relationship between England and France (1520 The Field Of The Cloth Of Gold meeting vs Henry wanting to prove his military strength and trying to invade France). Funnily enough, I know almost nothing about France in the 15th and 16th centuries outside of :

1. Mary Tudor's [Henry VIII's sister, not his daughter, Mary I] brief stint as Queen Consort of France & Anne Boleyn's subsequent time at the French court as a lady in waiting to Mary

2. how Henry VIII repeatedly used war against France as an attempt to prove his strength [eyeroll]

To be honest, that fic is entirely an excuse to explore the different influence each of Henry's queens has over the court through various means. I don't think anyone else would really be interested though, so it may be something I keep to myself.

Honestly sometimes i start having a fantasy of having an inside job within queer spaces of calling lesbianism (and gayness) “partly asexuality towards penises/vaginas” as to make sure the Queer Community who always wants to make sure that Asexuality Is Valid In All Even When It Contradicts Itself” shuts up all those “it’s transphobic to claim you don’t like ALL genitalia on ALL woman” because while apparently lesbianism can be disrespected surely they won’t be… Aphobic… will they? And against this unique misunderstood partly asexuality which is more rare than the very queer demisexuality? For real, playing your charts right this rethoric should work within the queer framework i’m so close to out myself as terfy to make that work… like if we make a flag and vaguely latin name and it more subtle than “super straight/gay” and put emphasis on “no sexual attraction towards” something it would work better than the simple demand “lesbians who are penis repulsed exist and should fully have language to express themselves”

Signed by a lesbian who saw another thread about how a line in a book about a gay boy not wanting to interact with vaginas (like how he personally didn’t want to) is apparently so so hurtful to the trans reader and author, who clarified he was dating a gay(?) man and as trans people now are hurting people aren’t to express any disgust with trans bodies (AS IF THAT’S NOT JUST SEXUALITY WHAT DO THEY THINK SEXUALITY MEANS…AESTHETIC PREFERENCES? LIKE YEAH SEXUALITY IS THAT YOU ARE DISGUSTED OR AT LEAST DON’T WANT TO INTERACT WITH SOME BODY PARTS OF A CERTAIN GROUP OF PEOPLE… an idea only allowed to exist when you are asexual… expressing and joking about preferences and boundaries unless you are asexual somehow… never heard of?)

Lmao I’ve thought of something similar…playing by their rules and coming up with a way for homosexuality to be an untouchable Queer Identity.

But honestly, I don’t think it would work. For three reasons:

1. They’d be quick to recognise it as homosexuality, and they hate homosexuals so they’d shut us down one way or another.

2. Trans ideology centres men, and anything that excludes men is forbidden. An “asexual identity” about excluding penis would be blasphemous, especially if it was for women. Back to point 1, they’d recognise this as homosexuality and shut it down.

3. Related to the other points, heterosexual trans people are the most entitled people ever. They genuinely cannot stand the idea of homosexuals not being attracted to them, so any sexuality that excludes them would be deemed transphobic.

But, it is nice to think about playing them at their own game and having fancy words to keep them from getting angry at us for being gay. I just think they hate and fetishise us too much for that to even be possible.

That’s really upsetting about the book…and really exposes how they never actually believed that it’s okay to have “genital preferences” like they’ve claimed. They just say that because they know they’d be rightfully called rapey and homophobic if they didn’t. But when push comes to shove, they constantly show that they don’t actually think it’s okay to “prefer” penis or vulva (I of course don’t believe in the whole “genital preference” concept, hence why it’s in quotes. That’s a whole other can of homophobic worms that I won’t get into here).

I honestly don’t even know how they think sexuality works. I think it’s that they think everyone is bisexual, and everything else is just aesthetic preference. So for example, they think lesbian just means “preference for feminine people”.

Reblogging a million blorbo posts is fine, writing long and complicated meta is admirable, but don't you dare "squee", that died in the 2000s and it's ~so cringe~, and ew, what, your special interest is in military aircraft through history? What are you, some kind of bootlicker? I don’t care that you engage in it in a way that does not and cannot provide any significant cultural or material support to the military, just give it up and fixate on media like the rest of us! But don't make it your whole personality or anything, don't display too much fan merch for anything too mainstream, that's cringe.

Flapping is cute, weighted blankets are a hot gift for anyone, but verbal tics and stims are "annoying upsetting" and "disrespectful" and rocking to self-soothe is "embarrassing", You're Making The Rest Of Us Look Bad.

You can meme all day about being awkward in certain very specific "cute" ways, but if you have trouble starting a conversation and just end up standing on the outskirts and staring, you're "creepy", and if you aren't good at judging when it's your turn to talk and end up interrupting people, well, your neurotype is no excuse for being so rude, if the rest of us can do it then so can you, we'll talk until the cows come home about how everyone has different experiences of neurodivergence but this doesn't count!

Everyone has an internal definition of Good and Bad white noise, of course, but if you have to test out your appliances before you buy them to see which one they'll make, you're a Karen.

Fidget spinners were considered a godsend, a beautiful example of the curb cut effect, until people decided they were "cringe", and then it became "it's only okay if you show us your Neurodivergent Card," and when that didn't stop neurotypicals from demonizing them, everyone who got any benefit from one was Making The Rest Of Us Look Bad.

Stim videos are something Every True Neurodivergent loves, but if you're drawn to messy play as an adult, ugh, stop making excuses to broadcast your OBVIOUS fetish, creep.

Speaking of which, let's look at the way people's brains break when someone's nonsexual sensory quirks and kinks actually do overlap; sure, you can have a kink born of your neurodivergence I guess, but you MUST acknowledge it as A Kink and ONLY A Kink and NEVER indulge it outside of the bedroom. What's the difference between you taking the related sensory play outside of the bedroom and a neurotypical with a footwear kink wearing their favorite boots to the grocery store, why can I recognize that it might not be sexual at all to that person in that context but can't extend the same concept to you? Um, uh, it's, uh - it's just different, just trust me!

Some of you never fully purged the ableist myth that autism is just an excuse rich white boys make to be rude and picky from your internal framework, and it shows - especially when it comes to even mildly expensive or "frivolous" needs. Every Good Valid Neurodivergent has a strong opinion on velvet and soft touch plastic and the smell of yogurt, but if you find dollar store sheets and T-shirts too stiff and scratchy and need softer ones - ugh, that's not a neurodivergent thing, you're just being a whiny little bitch about your expensive taste! Learn to adapt like the rest of us plebs! It's valid to have a strong preference for a single safe food of one specific brand - until it's the most expensive brand in the store, then it's "dammit, stop being a baby and accept the store brand ones, I make do with them just fine, you're just spoiled!" Catholic guilt masquerading as anti-corporatism: now in blatantly ableist flavor!

And, if your communication style clashes with someone else's, it can't possibly be because neurodiversity is, well, diverse; one of you MUST be lying and just pulling some neurotypical bullshit.

To be clear, I'm not saying that the limited acceptance that's there is BAD and we should start REJECTING those more accepted things to level the playing field. That's the opposite of what I'm saying, in fact! I'm really glad weighted blankets are more accessible than they used to be - curb cut effect, babey! - and that media-related special interests are getting at least somewhat better understood...even if I'm not fond of how media companies are abusing the phenomenon, but that's another complaint for another day.

But holy fucking shit we have a long way to go, even in majority neurodivergent spaces.

Gender thoughts

Is gender a cultural creation? Yes, of course. I think where the gender critical crowd loses me is that they think gender is inherently harmful, and I think it's morally complex.

I think it's currently impossible to separate gender, gender stereotypes, gender identity, gender expression, sexuality, and biological sex. I think we are all navigating what gender is, what parts of gender are harmful (like the stereotypes based on birth sex, the oppression based on those stereotypes, etc), and what parts are expressions of beautiful human creativity. And truly, some parts of gender expression are beautiful. The ways humans can exist is beautiful.

I think we're still examining and exploring the links between how we feel and what we physically are. We are still learning, "is there a difference here? how about here?". We are unlearning, too. We are unlearning the biases we were culturally taught due to the stereotypes we created relating to gender and sex. And yes, it's incredibly difficult to explore and prune and graft a tree while you're living in it, but we cannot realistically destroy society and start again without hurting the most vulnerable among us.

Does sex exist? Yes, undoubtably - and most gendered oppression is based on stereotypes based on sex. This is something we have to acknowledge, and anyone who refuses to do so is ignoring basic facts about how gender stereotypes formed in the first place.

This, however, does not mean we must segregate ourselves based on sex instead of gender. Why maintain those divides? Why go to the effort of destroying gender if you're just going to take all the framework of misogyny and place that directly on top of assigned sex? I see so many terfs and radfems say "Male bad, female good". That's still gender stereotypes, you've just erased the words "man" and "woman". Benevolent sexism doesn't become good just because a woman is doing it.

Gender is more than our sex assigned at birth. It is an expression of the things we feel inside. It is - yes - an expression of things we have come to associate with masculinity and femininity, which are rooted in sex. But here's the thing... even if men were the ones associated with softness and domesticity and frailty, I would still want a beard. What I find aesthetically affirming is not connected to the stereotypes of the sexes.

There are of course natural variations that change how our bodies express the directions written into our DNA, but on top of that, we are capable of inducing changes ourselves, if we want to do so. And I think everyone should have the right to change their body if they want, regardless of their identity. I simply do not see what is ethically wrong with changing your body as you choose.

Yes, it's supposed to be your choice. The language for so long was "it's not a choice". I think we need to draw gender identity and gender expression out of the pathologized, medicalized language we've been using, and I'm not alone in this. There is a push against transmedicalism, and the push for the acknowledgement of gender euphoria and nonbinary identities.

I don't think changing your body needs to be linked to a gender identity; I think gender expression is the more powerful, and more beautiful side of all of this. If we completely broke down the barriers, we could have masculine AND feminine AND gender-neutral women and men, and trans men and women, and nonbinary folks, and everyone else, and it wouldn't matter how anyone identified or expressed themselves; it would all be allowed, it would all be beautiful.

Hi! Id been interested to hear more about your thoughts on " bauhaus style " ! It's not a subject I know much about but I recently read black city white city (not sure if that's an ick or a win in your book!) So I'm curious about your opinion - if you don't mind! :)

ok so i'll start by warning you that since im not a native english speaker my thoughts might end up not being super well worded and articulated and im really sorry about that. also i'm putting it under a cut because i did get kinda Long (sorry about that)

I'm wary of the term 'style' in general (but that's just something i got from my studies), and since Im kinda specializing in bauhaus-related things im not fond of the term bauhaus style. That term is often used to talk about 1. objects and design and 2. architecture, and refers mostly to things such as furniture produced by the bauhaus during the dessau and berlin eras, and generally speaking after 1923, such as marcel breuer's chairs, wagenfeld's lamp, brandt's tea sets etc etc. But the Bauhaus didn't start in 1923, and produced more heterogenous things during it's first years in Weimar, when it's artistic 'ideology' wasn't as definite as it was once the school opened itself to constructivist influence from 1923. The productions commonly used to illustrate the "bauhaus style" mostly result from that constructivist influence. So talking about one single unified bauhaus style seems a bit too generalizing and reductive to me, and puts emphasis on one specific aspect of the Bauhaus' production rather than on its whole history, which shows a lot of aesthetical and ideological evolution. And on a simpler scale, why use the term 'style' when we could just say 'bauhaus productions' ?

Hearing the term 'bauhaus style' used in talks about architecture kinda annoys me even more, but that's probably because hearing people talk about the Bauhaus as if it was only an architecture school drives me mad in the first place haha. Architecture in itself wasn't a discipline at the school until 1927, and the architectural projects done at the school differed greatly between Hannes Meyer's and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's directorships. Again, there isn't one specific "style" of architecture that was done at the Bauhaus. It was modern, avant-garde architecture in the same vein as what could be seen in other parts of Europe and in the Soviet Union. Even if I personally don't like the term 'style', I prefer using the term 'International Style'.

I haven't read the book you're mentioning, but since it's about architecture in Tel Aviv it allows me to add a little bit of nuance to what I just said. I'm not at all well versed in that subject, but from what I know there were Bauhaus students who went to Israël to do architectural work. There is clearly an influence from the type of architecture that was being done at the Bauhaus in the twenties, but again, the term 'International style' would suit those works better. It's worth noting that the terms 'bauhaus style' and 'international style' are often used as synonyms, which to me is problematic. International style would include what was being done at the Bauhaus, but it cannot be reduced to that. There was definitely an influence from the Bauhaus in Tel Aviv, and I think in many cases that word is better than style. And that goes not only for the Bauhaus but also for various other styles.

Realizing as I'm typing this that this is definitely not well articulated lmao. In short what my opinion is is that the word style in itself is often problematic, because it implies an unified, definite concept, which isn't often a thing. I don't think it is in the case of the Bauhaus. I think it's better to talk, on one hand, about Bauhaus productions (for the things that were produced at the school ; there's no need to talk about bauhaus style while talking about marianne brandt's teapot since it was done at the bauhaus) and, on the other, about Bauhaus influences. And even there I think it would be even better to be more precise and talk about the individual influences. For example, regarding architecture, Gropius, Meyer and Mies van der Rohe were all part of the Bauhaus, but their ways of creating are all different. In short (for real this time skdsdj) I think it's best to be precise and not use too generalistic and reductive terms. But honestly in the grand scheme of things this isn't really important, it all only matters to me because I'm an art historian haha.

God that was so long. I hope it makes sense and it answers your question anon ! I think it's a super interesting topic to debate about, but sadly it's not easy to give an extensive answer here. Brevity doesn't allow for a lot of nuance sadly. Also this is just my own opinion and I could be very wrong tbh. N: “It’s better to try something that may actually work instead of whatever selfish endeavor you have here.” 

TC: “I think we lack the ability to be selfish, as we are all one, or, maybe we are the pinnacle of selfishness because of that.” 

TC: “The ascension is for all of us — to regain what we lost those years ago. We made a mistake that we have paid generations for.”

-They can’t tell us who they made the deal with — something as strong as a god 

-The Cor cannot move 

-Extreme logic from the Cor, very realistic (?) 

-A creature that has only been theorized — an elder brain. A creature formed from the minds of many — through the consumption of those minds. It is…evil…but there seems to be an extra clause here that…it needs something more. It seems sad, stuck in a fucked up cycle

TC: “As you’ve said we’ve tried many times to find a way out of what we have wrought for ourselves. I’d like to try. Naomi — is that what you call yourself now…” 

Cass: “You’ve got all the knowledge in the world and you can’t see what’s right in front of you?” 

N: “That sounds like you’re not very creative. And not willing to die for it. Like you expect me to.”

Ways of Seeing: Episode 1 by John Berger

If there is one fundamental tool to help us see and assess things, it is our eyes. Although, with the use of cameras, the way we see things and what we think of them also changes. As a result, a different perspective is acknowledged. Now, there are two main points that I have learned from the video titled “Ways of Seeing, Episode 1” by John Berger; these are: (1) observations and perspectives start with the eye, and (2) different perspectives account for different significance.

It is through the eyes that we become aware of our surroundings which helps us develop a sense of aesthetics. I can assess the appearances that I see before me and claim whether it looks put together rather than confusing or eccentric. Subsequently, I am able to evaluate an appearance once I see its overall picture. With that, I realized that our perception of art relies on our eyes, as John Berger mentioned in the video, “Perspective makes the eye the centre of the visible world.” Although, after evaluating my sense of aesthetics, I realized that our perception of art relies on our thought process as well.

My sense of aesthetics grew through years and years of observation. I begin by looking into the different design genres– from what I see, watch, or listen to– and practice how I would evaluate an appearance to discern whether it looks good or not. From there, I am able to pull inspiration from looking through different design styles in the media— the internet, television, and even through magazines. A large source of my ability to start and assess observations is the media. My observations are a product of what was taken in a picture or video form. Reckoning that the eyes cannot see the world and or different appearances simultaneously, the invention of the camera has helped me see what is beyond my sight. The camera brought me to get a glimpse of appearances that the eyes cannot travel to in an instant.

However, sometimes I only see parts of what I look for and not the entirety of it. When I encounter something that has been restricted only to see a portion of it, the information I get to pick up changes. This is in line with what the video has also mentioned about how different information can be picked up depending on how they are presented, which is why an art’s meaning has become perceptible manipulation and distortion. The significance of where I take inspiration also shifts to a perspective that may be less coherent. This parallels the instance when a camera is used, as its point of focus in a painting shifts, and the meaning behind the painting also changes. Even if we see art with our own eyes but only see it from the lens of a camera, the narrative changes just as much as the focus of the camera changes.

Apart from the two points I have mentioned, I also got to know about the significance brought about by the painting integrated into a building. Paintings, as an integral part of a building, contribute to its meaning and significance since they add some sort of signature to the look of a space. I can also relate this to the kind of field I am in by considering the importance of adding a signature to a space or building. Any form of art can serve as an accessory to a certain space to give it an identity. Moreover, it is also important that the significance and function are prioritized as much as the aesthetics to yield creative solutions. This ensures that a design is practical, convenient, and effective.

All things considered, these are some of the knowledge that I have gained and plan to bring with me as I pursue an artistic field in hopes of putting them into practice.in an effective and efficient way.

A general refresher on war related theatre productions and their costumes

Costumes are integral to a great performance, especially in the theater of naturalism. Costumes are way more than just pieces of clothing. They help to convey time period, develop character and personality, and express social status and class and more. While the actors and a script are essentially the bare-bones basic components of theater, majority of theatre products, especially period plays and fantasy dramas, are incomplete without the addition of costumes and makeup. Even hairstyles and makeup has to be coordinated to match the setting of the play to create a believable environment.

Theatre plays, movies, TV shows and even books related to the great wars of the world are extremely popular. A lot of people watch theatre productions based on this era to try to understand what was going on in the world. While some others are interested in them as the World War I and II represented the “ultimate example of good versus evil.” It is simple for audiences to understand battle lines and a clear victory.

Costumes for war based theatre productions

There are many companies today that offer replica of US revolutionary war uniforms and more, which can be used for theatre productions and even yearly reenactments. Replica uniforms are not something that one can just buy from a mall. Even professional theatre designers often do not have enough knowledge and expertise to create exact replications of war uniforms. This is why one needs to find a specialized costume shops that offer such items. Fortunately, today there are multiple companies that do so.  In addition to Spanish American war uniforms and other similar costumes, you can also find props through them that can be used for theatre productions and reenactments. Each and every part of war uniforms, starting from the kepi on the top of the head to the boots on the feet can be found through such companies.
