hi it's mermay and i'm thinking about sirens. i'm gunna do some looking of my own (at seadragons, probably) but can you think of any fish that look like their tails/features would make a cool mermaid?
Hello! I've actually answered a similar question before, here is my answer to that one:
But since your question is a little different, I'll feature some unique fish species you could find inspiration from!
Tumblr media
The rockmover wrasse! Here is an adult, the juvenile is a little wilder:
Tumblr media
Crazy patterns! Should go to good use :)
Tumblr media
Eels! Just any type of eel, really. They come in such varied shapes and sizes, and have various abilities too! If you're the type of person who likes to give merpeople the features of the fish they're based on, just imagine a moray eel merperson with two jaws! Or a ribbon eel merson whose tail sways like a ribbon while swimming. I'd suggest looking into eels!
Tumblr media
Electric eels too! Despite the name, they aren't actually eels at all, so I'm mentioning their genus separately here. Long fish that sense things with electricity and can generate it, even being able to cause prey animals to stop or start swimming with careful shocks... need I say more?
Tumblr media
Here's one that could have many ways to be interpreted as a merson. Stargazers! They're ambush predators that hide in the sand, only having their eyes and mouth showing. I'd like to see how those would be interpreted as merpeople.
Tumblr media
Mudskippers! The semiaquatic fish that live most of their lives on land.
Tumblr media
Another one that walks, frogfish! Many species not only have a lure, but also walk along the bottom of the seafloor. How's that for an interesting merson challenge?
Tumblr media
I don't think I've ever seen a merson who looks like a billfish, as in like a swordfish, sailfish or a marlin. The particular fish here is a sailfish!
Tumblr media
I don't see some reef fish often, either. How about a moorish idol?
Tumblr media
Perhaps the similarly-shaped butterflyfish?
Tumblr media
Oh hey, maybe mandarinfish! That's one colourful guy :)
Tumblr media
Deep sea fish are always a treat, too. They look very otherworldly compared to the fish we see often in everyday life! My personal favourite is the barreleye, but any friend from the deep is a friend indeed. The stoplight loosejaw who has a private red flashlight, the cookiecutter shark who sneakily bites chunks off bigger animals, bristlemouths with their large jaws and tiny teeth... I recommend looking into fish that have photophores, aka light-producing organs! They're fish that glow in the dark!!! Extremely cool and mysterious...
Tumblr media
Lanternfish are a good example of this, I think. They're thought to be the most abundant group of vertebrates, they're deep sea-living, they have photophores, they migrate vertically in humongous schools that literally look like false bottoms to sonar.
Tumblr media
Deep sea anglerfish are a classic, old but gold. Seldom used in merfolk! I've tried tackling anglerfish merfolk myself before, I'll feature my concept sketches below for possible inspiration... though they contain artistic nudity, so I'll only feature them under the cut.
And there you have it! I got kinda carried away, I'm sure no one minds. Have a fun Mermay! I'm gonna draw some art for it myself, but in the meantime, have this fish ramble :)
Once again, artistic nudity under the cut. Just some cartoon tits. Completely nonrealistic nonoffensive unreal cartoon bazookas, just wanna put them away from a direct line of sight because my blog isn't for art most of the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her first initial concept on the left and some additional ones on the right. Anglerfish of all kinds use lures to trick prey, so I wanted to mix the lure aspect with mermaids to create a siren that lures in sailors with her human half and eats them with her fish half. The human half has working eyes, vocal chords and lungs to first spot sailors, then call and sing to them, but besides that all the other organs are in the fish half. No doubt similar merple exist, but this was my take on it! It's a lot of fun to be creative, I recommend just going with the flow and doing what feels the most natural or coolest. You've got this!

As someone who enjoys reading and writing off-canon takes of Aziraphale, could you just... you know. Start a discussion about that final 20% mentioned by OP whose name is very clearly not included here?
Maybe something to do with "fan art and fan-fiction are produced by individuals reflecting their own values through the lens of the blorbo and these interpretations ought not be subject to blanket criticism based on your individual interpretation of the blorbo?"
Please and thank you.
I'm not exactly sure what OP's point was in the screenshot there, I have some trouble understanding things online sometimes, BUT, about what you said:
"fan art and fan-fiction are produced by individuals reflecting their own values through the lens of the blorbo and these interpretations ought not be subject to blanket criticism based on your individual interpretation of the blorbo"
I absolutely agree.
I hope by now most of our followers have noticed that we never criticise fanart and fanfic in here. It's never been featured on this blog. What we feature here are prejudiced metas concerning the canon. We call out ableist, misogynistic (etc) takes about the canon characters. Takes that are trying to "explain" what happened in canon to other fans using veiled misogyny, ableism, victim blaming and anti-autistic bias. Those can have harmful repercussions irl, and we feel we must fight against those prejudices.
However fanfic and fanart are not that at all. Fanfic and fanart are not canon by definition, and are so subjective that they can have thousands of interpretations, so we feel it's not our (or anyone's) place to judge.
It's like playing with your Barbie dolls. You can do what you want with them, it's mostly harmless. If someone wants to make Aziraphale the villain in a fic? Go ahead, that falls into headcanon territory, and headcanon is not canon, it's anyone's land. I personally won't read that specific fic, but you can write it. I'm pretty sure I'd write stuff someone wouldn't read too, it's all ok. The problem is when they start to spread this as canon.
Now it must be said, of course some fics can be triggering (like every art out there), but in my 4 year experience in this fandom, 99% of fics are properly tagged, authors usually overtag for safety, so if you see a fic with a theme you don't like, it's easy to avoid it. Even fanart is tagged in the GO fandom, which is not something I see in every fandom out there. And besides, speaking of fanart specifically, it's so subjective bc what you see there may be just a metaphorical interpretation of feelings and not literal. So if you start scrutinising that you end up falling into censorship territory and that's shady.
Because of all that, we try to focus on calling out bad takes regarding the canon facts only.
That being said, in order to do that sometimes we try to analyse the overall situation of the fandom, bc many ppl try to impose fanon as canon in those metas, consciously or not. So while doing that, we may make commentaries on some fanon stuff, including the most common portrayals of the characters in fanwork. But trust that this is not a criticism of the fanworks at all. Again, it's just an attempt to separate the canon from the fanon, and to try to study the situation to see where the bad takes are coming from. In other words, fanon can be one of multiple tools to understand the fandom's mindset, and we make use of it. Is it possible that we may have (or will) missed the tone while addressing that and come across as if we're criticising fanworks? Of course, we're human, but trust that's not where we're coming from, and we appreciate criticism so we can be better :)
But honestly, if someone writes a fic where Aziraphale and Crowley are a toxic homophobic straight couple that ends up cheating on each other with the Metatron and divorcing, I couldn't care less. Have fun with your Barbies (but pls tag your fic lol).
I know this is a theme discussed over and over in fandoms, but I tried to give my two cents here, and believe me, this blog absolutely believes in "headcanon and let headcanon". Our problem is with ppl spreading misinformation about the canon.
Thanks for your ask, it's a very important thing to address! I hope I addressed what you were suggesting, if I missed anything, @indigovigilance , please share your thoughts in the reblogs/comments so we can discuss/clarify things. I have a feeling we're both coming from the same place here though 😁
Xoxo,
Mod M 🩶

wondering what your thoughts on “Tar” were !
I saw it a while ago and I feel like I'm still working out my thoughts on it. I definitely found it a thought-provoking character study and I think what makes it complex and interesting is summarized in that one scene in the movie.
Before I saw it, I just saw that one scene i.e. clip of her and the Juilliard student, which was interesting for me to watch as someone who studied cinema and had to watch Birth of a Nation in virtually every class for four years and getting fed up with it (I ended up skipping those screening days). There was so much conversation around that scene and from what I had seen, most people sided with her and I was like, I really feel like we're not supposed to side with her here, I feel like the irony is that she's chastising and then bullying them for being restricted and conformist when she's being restricted and conformist or at the very least, it's more complicated than simply she's right and they’re wrong. But I didn't know for sure so I decided to watch the whole thing to understand the context. Then when I did I was like, OK this is an excellent scene.
Although it essentially and effectively summarizes the debates about looking at art and not the artist, it also showcase her hypocrisies and her narcissism and her own limitations as an artist because the immediate context is that the student plays her a contemporary piece she's unfamiliar with and her response is to belittle it and to return to the canon of old white men, which is conformist. Then the wider context is that she herself is an authority figure who groomed and blacklisted a student leading to her suicide so of course she's going to advocate for divorcing the art from the artist because of her own predatory and destructive behaviour. And then there's the scene later on in the movie where she does exactly what she apparently abhors which is rate a musician on everything but her skill and talent. Then within the scene her frustration at the student for not responding to her playing or to her arguments the way that she wants them to leads to her humiliating them. And then there's the question of her emphasis on interpretation of a composition as a rebuttal to simply looking at the music because what makes up a conductor's interpretation of a piece of music? Would their perspectives and life experiences not inform how they approach music? Can you truly separate the personal from the art as an artist? But she sounds right, she makes points that can generate tons of conversation about art vs. the artist, about engaging with the historical figures of your chosen field etc. etc. (but is the student even saying they've never engaged with Bach? They don't conduct him but it's not as if they've never listened to him) so it's a layered scene, especially considering that she's called a bitch by a student who won't play Bach because of his misogyny. And then the movie essentially challenges us to have that debate with ourselves by slowly peeling back who she is for the rest of the runtime. Is Lydia right in that scene just by the merit of her argument or does knowing more about her life and her perspectives inform the way we view that argument? It certainly does for me.
And then Cate Blanchett was great as Lydia. She wasn't likable, I don't think, but she held your attention onscreen, she embodied being an Authority, she definitely conveyed how Lydia Tar would be a household name in classical music.
I also appreciated the subtle, almost dreadful vibe that permeated the movie.

ok this has actually been bothering me for a while. Note that everythign I say is my own opinion and while I do think what I have to say holds merit, I do not claim to be an expert in any field I am mentioning here and if you see innacuracies in my statement, feel free to kindly let me know in a reblog and I'll reblog the corrected version. When we discuss ai art, (usage of the word art being left to open ended interpretation and debate since that isn't my point at all), I wish we could kind of section off the areas of artificial intelliegence we're actually talking about and SAY ai ART or ai WRITING instead of ai as a whole (though I understand its shorthand usage, that leads to conflation of it as a whole). Because AI, while very questionable in its usages right now, is more than art and writing.
AI is the screen reader I use in classes to help me read. AI is eye trackers people use for computers when they're immobile. AI is google add-ons that block certain things for visually sensitive people like epileptics. AI is medical pattern collecting and identifying in at-risk populations (which does have implications which I will mention more later). AI is auto captioning services, though they kind of suck half the time and give you very funny but innacurate youtube subtitles (shoutout to 'palkia you son of a bitch', though I think it's edited). It's voice commands for devices for people with limited hand mobility.
I am NOT an AI bootlicker asskisser whatever. I have opinions on ai art and artist ownership, but here's the thing: we can't condemn the term ai in its entirety when it's been such a huge acessibility thing. We can't immediately see someone use the word ai and immediately put them down as a crypto finance nft ai art bro. because GOD i hate nft bro ai whatever nonsense, the people who steal artist's work to put through their algorithms and create copies of it, but ai is also used for so much more and I feel like the current climate around ai is very pinpointed negatively at one aspect of it, but brings down other helpful aspects of it in the process of pointing out the very valid flaws with it. So, if someone skims this and sees me saying 'hey, can we please use some nuance here', I'm just waiting for the 'why are you on their side, ai is terrible, it steals from artists' or 'why do you hate ai, stop being a sjw whateverthefuck' thing when my entire point here is that we need to be able to separate what we're actually talking about here in a meaningful way. You can condemn negative parts of ai that are genuinely concerning for creative folk everywhere WHICH I FUCKING AGREE WITH while also saying that we need to be mindful of the fact that AI also means screen readers, translators, epileptic flash blocker add-ons, and so many other things, and by condemning anyone who uses ai as a whole you are bringing down SO many people with that in the area of effect of your sweeping statements.
TLDR the internet is doing that 'you're either with us or against us' thing and as usual it's marginalized communities, disabled people this time, being used as talking points and what-ifs on both sides instead of our actual input being valued as people who do use other forms of ai.
And we can talk about aspects of accessibility and medical ai in a nuanced way, too. there's definite data collecting implications in medical use of ai and machine learning. There's definite demographic collection and pattern recognition that can be used by medical professionals to misattribute things with more of a focus on data and statistics rather than on how medical statistics are skewed by sociological factors. (for instance, are southern 'people of walmart' rednecks all fat, or is it more in line with impoverished rural communities and food deserts leading to a link in demographic and weight?) There's negativity and hesitation and issues in all branches of AI and this isn't saying medical use AI is perfect because honestly, I'd argue there's more to be worried about with that than creatively used ai. BUT my point stands: you cannot use the term AI as an immediate marker for who's a bad person for supporting it and who isn't, because they very well may support ai as accessibility and condemn ai as an art tool.

I understand your point but "Rape" is not about interpretation. The book has multiple rape scenes, worse are the vegaspete ones where pete actually passes out because of the pain of being rape multiple times. I was thankgul on how the series handle it but still we cannot dismiss the abuse. We can like the fictional story but minimizing the abuse on it is not how to. The whole separate art from the artists for me doesn't work when you see the abuse the actors went through. Like I said, is not up to interpretation on the books (especially those authors have several of them) there are multiple rape scenes and people needs to acknowledge the issue with it because those scenes are made as romantic when they were not and people needs to understand why that was wrong.
Listen anon, I'm not going to claim to have read the books or all the official content, so I have no idea how severe or explicit the rape depicted is. But. My general stance on the topic of non-consent or problematic themes in fiction is this; it's the responsibility of the individual, and not the collective, to be accountable for their own experiences and evaluations of media. Basically I believe it's your job, JUST YOURS, to evaluate what you think and feel about something, not someone else's, certainly not a whole horde of people online. You cannot put the burden of moral integrity onto the popular masses. It doesn't work like that. You cannot stand on a soap box and demand that everyone acknowledge how right or wrong something is. it doesn't work like that.
It's not our job as a fandom to stand around talking about how problematic things are in the content we're fans of, as though we have something to be ashamed of. It's not our job, as a fandom, to apologize for the things we like being less than perfect representations of whatever they're popularly representing. It's not our job as a fandom to enjoy the content we enjoy with a big disclaimer slapped in front of it.
It IS our job as a fandom to curate our own, individual experience. And that can look like many things! Discussing the problematic aspects of the problematic things depicted is awesome, I wholeheartedly support you wanting to discuss the problematic themes and relate them to the real world in meaningful ways! It's good media analysis, honestly! But it also doesn't give you a relative moral high ground for choosing to do so, just like it doesn't make you morally bankrupt to not want to. Let me tell you, the entire genre of BL would not exist if people didn't *hand wave* at problematic media. That doesn't make it right or wrong, it just means that obviously it's popular enough that maybe we shouldn't be asking ourselves whether its right or wrong, like we're not all capable of a nuanced, mature interpretation of the material.
However, anon, at the end of the day, if the rape content of the kinnporsche books doesn't sit right with you, then that is fine. It's absolutely ok, and I hope you take care of yourself. But that doesn't make you more, or less, right than the person who does like that content, for whatever reason they might do. Because their experience, like your experience, is completely unique. And it's special. And it doesn't deserve to be shit on for the sake of advertising how aware you are of something that's problematic, nor does the integrity of content creators.
This is very long, but the last thing I will say is that if anyone outright rejects the notion that is IS rape, or that there ARE problematic themes at all, that's a different can of worms altogether, and has more to do with the media maturity of the individual than it does with the source material. But I don't see people doing that. People are, as a rule, pretty well aware of how messed up something is. We all live in a society, after all, we have the evidence of right and wrong in our daily lives all around us. It doesn't need to be uniformly depicted in the books we read, or the media we consume. Suspension of disbelief builds empires, my friends.
And if Vegaspete has depictions of rape, well, then that's just that. That's what the authors chose to do. You can either enjoy it for what it is with your suspended disbelief, or hate it for what it is. The choice is yours.

Re: ESC 2024 hosting because of ABBA: I’ve got THOUGHTS even tho I’m just an American (don’t get me started on American Song Contest that needs to die we have 57 of those WHY DO WE NEED THAT ONE) lol. The thought are as follows: I get that it’s ~tradition~ for the winner to host next year’s contest (afaik it’s not like written in the rules, right??) but like… had they just been HONEST and said “Sweden is going to host ESC 2024 regardless of winner for ABBA’s 50th anniversary” I really think everyone would’ve been like “ok that’s fine get on with the show, whoever wins can host 2025 or have a separate event” but instead (this may just be the American in me who sees corruption everywhere lol) I fully believe Sweden paid a lot of money to get the jury to make them the winner (or otherwise somehow rigged it) and because of that, whether you like her or not, Loreen’s “win” will always seem suspect and luckily it seems like the juries are bearing the brunt of the nasty reactions, not Loreen (whether you like her or not, nobody deserves to be shat on for what the juries did), she’s always gonna have those allegations over her. Do I think Finland should’ve won with that popular vote count? Yes. Do I think Loreen had anything to do with Sweden actually winning? Not really. I really hope whoever’s in charge gets their shit together before next year and change rules to have it actually be fair (ie, if you won once you can’t compete again, abolish the juries and have the popular vote win, etc) because it was FUN this year with unique acts (for the most part lol) and then Sweden ruined it and soured the whole thing for everyone INCLUDING THE PERFORMERS and that makes me sad. It’s supposed to be fun. You’re not supposed to go home hoping your country doesn’t hate you.
Listen, even before the Swedish national selections I've been reading wank to Loreen. I didn't know who she was, because I don't watch Eurovision religiously (metalheads in general think that Eurovision is crap and this year we all were proven it is crap indeed). I heard her song and didn't even remember it for the first time, I totally spaced out when I watched the video. It's nothing special. But everyone was treating it like the highest form of art.
They kept saying she's going to win the national selections, and then the whole contest. I think someone created that hype around her on purpose. So many viewers thought the song was something exceptional, while it isn't. I personally think they pulled her out of her sleeve and created the hype to win it. Because the same strategy was used with Blanka in Poland. Promoting the song on TV, then in multiple countries, etc.
Sometimes shady tactics are not necessary to get high score in televote, it's simply marketing and I can easily see it in both cases here (but ofc Blanka didn't get that many points from the jury, because Poland is not one of the jury pets and we always do better at televote).
The jury votes, I'll leave it to your own interpretation. Whether it was marketing (the bookmaker odds overhyped Sweden to the ridiculous degree as well, it could also be a marketing strategy), or if they were paid. Who knows? There is no proof for anything, but to me the blatant promotion of the song was pretty clear.
To me Loreen is no one special and because of this whole hype around her I just can't look at her, I avoid everything related to her, and didn't even want to look at her performance. I'm not the person to send someone hate, however. I just avoid what I dislike. I love Käärijä, so all my attention goes to him. Indeed, Sweden ruined it all, because without them even the televote could be different. Many people mass voted for Finland trying to beat Sweden (they were probably tired of the whole promotion of this song, too). I think Käärijä would still win the televote without Sweden playing dirty, but without such a huge advantage. Would Loreen be 2nd though? I'm not so sure. Every person I talk to, says that the song is nothing special.
Next year I'm definitely not going to vote. When there's a good song, I'll just stream that artist on Spotify and support them on social media. This year we were proven that even great artists can score very little points, so this whole Eurovision ranking is for bragging rights only. Nothing else than that. Just being there is good for every artist, because they get huge exposure.
So it really doesn't matter if we vote for them or not. It only matters if they go there. That's it.

hi coda sorry for sending an ask abt this but i like talking its like a socratic seminar i think if someone really really resonates with your art and respects it and enjoys it they will not take your character to be a cruel person. basically if someone does have that reading the objective truth is theyre not picking up what youre putting down and while its good to tune into these things in the sense that you can adjust accordingly i think more often than not if a character gets misinterpreted its not a result of poor writing/communication but rather a lack of experience or resonance with the person viewing them. which the author has basically no control over. the best you can do is be earnest and place beacons and people who get it will see it and people who dont wont. its a scary reflection of how real life functions but i think that makes it a little more special doesnt it . anyway i keep thinking abt flowey and chara
hello clyde its ok hi : ) yea its true that there will always be someone who doesnt really connect with what you're trying to say... i really wish i had the confidence to be like , Ok what i'm trying to say isn't even really the point here though. my biggest wish is to be confident enough in what i'm making to let my own intentions coexist separate from how they're recieved, and allow the discrepancy to exist and find beauty in that... but that's a hard thing, because you obviously want them to be as close to eachother as you can possibly get them...but like you said, so much of that relies on the life that the person who is recieving the art has lived and the way they choose to interface with the thing...its hard to accept that it's mostly out of your control. the artist realyl honeslty does so little of the legwork in the relationship i think.... i said this earlier but i try to have an attitude of like, no matter how they take it, if this can mean something to somebody then that's all i could ever ask for, if the emotional weight it has to me lands with someone else, that's all i could ask for, even if its a completley different kind of emotional weight. even if 5 other people look at it and it doesnt land, if it lands even once, then you won.
i think about flowey and chara a lot too toby fox reads as an example of a kind of person who is really confident about this type of thing....For a guy who has made a game so widely played that its inevitably going to be one of the most misinterpreted things in the world just by nature of how many people are trying to interpret it , he seems pretty at peace with that...that kind of earnesty and acceptance is where i'd like to get. thank sfor the socratic seminar ask hope youre well today

折り紙と百景 (Origami to Hyakkei) English Translation
youtube
Origami and A Hundred Sceneries (0)
After the Rain
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
これは やがて 辿る世界を 祈る私の 願いの詩 これは 今じゃ 悔やんでばかりの 弱虫な恋歌
For the world that will soon follow,
This is my poem of wishes. (1)
But right now, this is a weakling’s love song,
filled only with regret.
花を 風を 飾るあの日々を 覚えていますか 貴方のくれた 百余の景色を 今は お暇しても
Those days that decorated the wind with flowers,
Do you remember them?
The hundreds of sceneries from you,
now, even if I take my leave
四季折々の夢でありますように 色を変える 折形の様 ひらり落ちて 貴方のそばへ 寄り添えるなら
For the existence of dreams that sway from season to season,
I change colors, like folding shapes (2)
I will drift down to your side,
if you wish to nestle close.
ずっと ずっと 気づいていました 貴方のことに 叶わぬことに 人も 実り 麦秋至 知れたことでしたね
I noticed long, long ago
the things that you could not attain (3)
People too, are crops of early summer (4)
But it seems that goes without saying.
あれも これも 間違いだなんてさ 言わないでいてよ 枯れたる草も 蛍となる日を ひどく 待ち望むように
“this” and “that” are all mistakes
Please don’t say things like that
The day that even wilted grass becomes a firefly,
I will wait eagerly for that day.
貴方の行く畦道を照らせたら この未来も 笑えているような 叶わない恋を知った 知られずひとりで泣いた
If I could light up the path you tread,
Even this future will appear to smile
I knew it was an unattainable love,
without knowing, I cried alone.
そんなふたつの声は交わらない 絶え間なく四季は去った 忘れられないまま夢になってしまった 悪戯な恋と ただ一枚折って
Those two voices do not mix.
The unending seasons have gone,
yet in their unforgettableness became dreams.
With this mischievous love, fold one sheet (5)
貴方のくれた 貴方の景色を 今は お暇しても 四季折々の夢で会えますように 色を変える 折形の様
what you have given me, the scenery that belonged to you,
now, even if I take my leave.
For the sake of meeting in the dreams that sway from season to season,
I change colors, like folding shapes.
ひらり落ちて 貴方のそばへ 寄り添えるなら
I will drift down to your side,
if you wish to nestle close.
Translator’s notes: (0) For 百景, a hundred sceneries is the literal translation, but it often refers to famous scenery/places known for good views. For instance you may see a list like “Japan’s Hundred Sceneries” that lists out good sightseeing spots.
(1) Generally 詩 refers to poems. However because Mafumafu uses the “uta” pronunciation, I’m not entirely sure if this is referring to a poem or if this kanji can be used for songs as well. I’m like 98% sure this means poem here but idk
(2) 折形 is the kanji for “origami” the Japanese art of folding paper that you probably know. However, Soraru uses the pronunciation “origata”, essentially pronouncing the two kanji separately. 形 on its own basically only means “shape” or “form”, but 折 seems like it can mean folding or an occasion (like a single-time event). I ended up choosing the translation “folding shapes” since it makes more sense and is more on theme but I just thought this was kinda interesting.
(3) Ok for most lyrics that utilize this rhythm I interpreted as one unbroken thought, since they all seemed to make the most sense that way. Breaking this one up still creates a coherent and on-theme idea though, so just to keep any possible nuance, pretty sure this line can technically also be interpreted roughly as “the unattainable ‘you’”
(4) To be honest, I don’t know if I translated this correctly. Translating the parts individually, it would be 人も = people too, 実り = harvest/crop, and 麦秋至 is best described as one of 72 “microseasons” observed in Japan, when wheat ripens. It spans from May 31- June 5, which is technically before summer by western standards, but I called it “early summer” due to it occurring after 立夏 (can be translated as “the beginning of summer”)
(5) 折って also means to break, but given that 一枚 uses the counter for sheet-like objects and also to stay on the origami theme I chose to go with fold.

Honestly I think my next step is to slow down, look at the last several days of evoked options, and figure out how to best thread them together. If me waking up to like 500 tweets to catch up on my own messaging with says anything, the actual momentum of the thought is fine, regardless of schumann volume right now. So I mean. I think it's time to start recrafting these things anew.
Would be very funny if I could take Shea mindlessly reblogging a picture of a hunting owl sweeping down on her to the reaper this time, instead of elsa like last.
Again, look, I'm not used to playing on this level. I just wanted to be left alone. I just wanted to live as a man in the game, and play games, and teach it through games, but she won't fucking stop. Even if she could slip away now, which she fucking can't, she'd just find another excuse to fucking harass me in a few months, and it's not fucking happening again. 20 years of her cyclic bullshit is more than enough. Much less her past lifetimes abusing my brothers good will.

Do I WANT to be responsible for a few hundred million souls or identities? Absolutely fucking not. That is dead ass the opposite of what I was aspiring for until she fucking stalked her way into my life for the umpteenth time. Am I willing to, to end this fucking bullshit of hers? Absolutely.
Shealyn, you realize the only reason people reincarnate is because they fucked up, right? Like they failed to reach peace, heaven, nirvana, attainment, whatever the fuck it's called on whatever path? You realize you having thousands of years of past lives is because you're a habitual fuckup, right? I got here on one. After someone like you got removed from the cosmic gene pool. Figure it out. Because I'm not gonna have you breaking into my fucking game lobby and hurting my friends, family, and students in your fucking obsession forever.
No seriously, you provide no service to the universe at current. Net negative. Occasional ok-ish art, but a million people can do that. Only a few willingly lead people to the void for their own narcissism and refusal to accept accountability for their behavior. That's a special kind of Lilithian whore.
If only you could apply that same goddamn obsession to actual work instead of trying to shortcut on my dick you won't stop riding or hunting for reblogs that make you feel like a mystic for farting in the room. If you worked half as hard at actual works as you did at avoiding work, you'd be a motherfucking goddess, but you won't look at that part, because the self penalty is too high. You've turned running into your only fucking option, and have been at it for literal fucking lifetimes now.
"Past lives" are just the system expunging an empty non-identity, recycling the soul juice, and trying over again, but if it's not completely purged, the historic memory layers on itself, and you inherit your own bullshit, over, and over again, and you objectively motherfucking refuse to do the work, just chase brothers around from here to greece, who all tell you to do the fucking work.
I motherfucking regret to inform you that requires more than riding your ex's face and bringing your biweekly oreo or peanut butter offering that are literally just there as another excuse to pack your face after talking to your own shadows to tell you that you're fine. A pavlovian reward for your own bullshit you've trained yourself into like a dog with its own treat clicker.
You know, even in christianity, hell isn't really a thing in it's books? The translations get weird in time, and the re-interpretations, but you go to motherfucking Sheol if you refuse to find god. A howling void, just like Tartarus by another name, separated and in the abyss and faded into nothing. Even the jews believe that you get reduced there, washed over on yourself for a while, and reborn into a wholeass new person. You know. Like a Wild Card. Like me. Who is in no way related to anyone on this node before me, because they got erased. Which is why I get to tap into the hermetic line and its rites directly after attainment. Okay?
No seriously girl, it's one thing to get some past life recursion from a major core godlyesque ancestor calling you home. It's a whole other thing for your memories to be plagued by death and exploding volcanos as a retarded nobody. FIGURE IT OUT, BITCH.
Here's a thing Shea, do you even have a goal with your "path"? The one that hasn't moved anywhere but backwards? Like, which god do you seek eternal life with? What teachings are you upholding to get there? or is this just a pit you're willfully rotting inside in this lifetime with no goal or final destination? Are you after Anubis' afterlife? What actions beyond nutter bars have you taken for that? Hermes' afterlife? Why won't you read the books. You don't care about your misled cult acolyte's immortal souls because you don't care about your own, which is why it's all but extinguished.

I genuinely do not fucking know how Mark can live with himself while she does this regendering of her bird based on genitals. Especially knowing it's in direct conflict of the god she was pretending to be a priestess of. Dude has like seven rules and this alone is fucking one of them up.
Sis birds regularly defy gender convention and Hermes teaches gender in all things, not just man. So like. Wow, you're transphobic in ALL languages, beliefs, sciences and religions. But Mark isn't ready to unpack that, because he isn't ready to unpack his own accountability. Just like he isn't willing to listen to the trans man you forcefully repressed so you could keep up this motherfucking roleplay of yours. And motherfucking ran from the second he stopped letting you, and instead converted it into a motherfucking rapey ass shadow cult, Lilith.
Also changing this to my pin, since she belligerently posted her new wave of rebellious transphobia posing as happiness after I rotated the LAST pin.

Henry will, in fact, be the death of you.
I'm henry, I'm tired, you're a piece of crap person, and I laid one hell of an egg. A bunch, really, but one in particular is just. You wouldn't even understand if I explained it to you, because you've refused to read a single book, because every single one would break up your delusional fantasy. every. single. one.
like you're retarded in every religion, you delusional, abusive, stalker piece of shit.
When I next wake, after catching up on evocations in the public domain, guess it's time to buckle down and start weaving them again. After all, the eclipse isn't far off.

Sunny: Hey Omori! Your trauma-repressing days are over. Give me the truth.
Omori: If you want it... then you'll have to take it.
(Omori gets off his throne as the hands retract)
Omori: But you already knew that.
Sunny: I had a feeling you'd say that...
(Sunny summons his violin)
Omori: How many times have we fought?
Sunny: Hard to say, it's the memory I have of us since I created you.
(Both Sunny & Omori smile at each other)
Sunny: Time to finish this Omori. Once and for all!
(Omori pulls out his knife as they prepare to battle)
See, I don't remember why you sent these DMC Omori asks, but I feel like this'd work better with Mari as Dante and Sunny as Virgil. And then the Headspace gang would work as V and the like.
Because ok, we firmly believe that Virgil is a system thanks to DMC 5. Like, it's not even subtle honestly. Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare are literally alters that were expelled from Urizen along with V when he became Urizen, they literally say they're "discarded thoughts from when he was Nelo Angelo" and are "no longer bound to his consciousness", they're sentient creatures who can think for themselves and do their own thing, it's not a question for me. V and Urizen also kinda count but they were made by the Yamato separating Virgils human and demon sides from eachother and possibly fused together mentally aswell as physically (though that might be up to personal interpretation. The manga, from what I remember, might leave the door open for V to still be in there somewhere since he just gives the mental representation of the book to lil Virgil and then it shows Virgil back i think??? I need to read that manga i cant remember the page im thinking of well at all) but I still think they count as alters and Viegil feels very very plural to us. And Sunny is also very plural to us sooooo yeah. It makes sense eto combine em :p.
Yadda yadda, I'm getting off track, the point is I think I could slot the Headspace gang into V and the Familiars (New band name woo!!!) pretty well!!!
Like, one way you could do it is that V Sunny could be the regular old Omori while the Urizen Sunny could be Omor Boss Fught Omori. Or V Sunny could be the fucked up zombie Sunny you see in the mirror during the truth sequence while Urizen is Omori (or vice versa) [also tangent but I always liked it whenever Pre-Truth Sunny is represented as that zombie, both because I feel like that's a good way to represent how he probably feels after Stair Con 19XX but also because I dunno I think it's a cool look. Like the tall Onryo Mari in the mirror. You don't see art of them often and I like em], or V is Stranger and Urizen is Omori. There's alot of ways you could go with those two honestly!!!
Either way the Headspace gang fit neatly into the Familiars. Maybe Hero as Nightmare is a bit of a stretch but I think Aubrey could slot into Shadow pretty well (maybe as a big pink bunny instead of a shadow panther) and Kel as Griffon. I think that makes sense.
I'm kinda fuzzy while typing this out so I'm not sure where I'm going with this but yeah!!! I think Snuuy should be allowed to Judgement Cut End. As a treat (*^‿^*)

Ok, uhm, tarot question! I use mainly my pendulum, but it has been caught lying a few times now so I'm never really sure if to completely trust it or not. This time I turned to my tarot cards, which I barely use, to get yes or no answers. I did the shuffle and then started drawing cards until I got an Ace or 13 cards method, until I had 3 piles. It started giving me no answers to things I knew was yes, and even answered no when I asked if they were answering the truth. Do you have any tips?
Some more info: my deck was gifted to me by my boyfriend who's a fan of necromancy in games and fantasy novels. Therefore, he gave me a XIII Tarot. While the art is beautiful, I don't think I really connect with it. I've tried other methods of yes & no answers before with tarot, none of them actually "worked". I've barely used it because I don't feel a connection to it and, when I use it, I get pretty lost in the meaning because I'm not sure how to interpret it to what I was asking. I'm a noob!
+++
Okay so I just took a look at that deck. It's gorgeous. However, I would not suggest that deck for a beginner. First of all it's the marseilles style, which means that the pip cards, the number cards, are without their own image, they just have the number of suites on the face of the card like a regular playing card. So you would have to understand the number symbology as well as the meaning of suites before reading those cards.
The reviews I saw also said that the book it came with doesn't help much with meaning.
Then when you look at the pictures, while they ARE beautiful, they have a very dark, brutal feel to them, and if you don't connect with them, I'm afraid they probably wouldn't let you in at all.
It seems like you already realize that different oracles have different personalities and are best for different kinds of questions. Or maybe you don't realize that and you feel like the problem is you. I don't think it is. I think it might be a mismatch with oracle, querent, reader and question. You also might want to cleanse your pendulum. I'm not sure how, since i don't use pendulums (pendula?) but there are different ways. Salt water, moon water, incense, etc. Look that up.
But back to tarot. I don't think this is the right deck for you. Again, it's not about you. It's not even about the deck. Some people love that deck. It's just that some decks don't resonate. I got myself a Thoth deck once, but that thing made me literally feel sick. If I looked too long at some of the cards I got nauseous. In the end I gave it away. Maybe it didn't have "bad juju' maybe it was just a matter of a mismatch, but I 100% couldn't read with that deck. And I was not a beginner.
All decks have a different feel. Some are too intense. Some are dark and beautiful and brutal. Some are soothing and calm. Some are young and peppy. Some are no nonsense. Some are pretty and empty headed. Some are emotional. Some are business like.
How do you know which deck to choose? While it is good for your first deck to be gifted to you, I think in this case you should choose your own. And it might be best if you could hold them in your hands and go through the cards so you could feel the energy. Also take a look at the book that comes with them. Although you should probably get a book separate from that.
If you can't make it to a witchy store where you can hold the decks and also possibly ask the clerk for advice, you probably want to start with the basics. That's the Ryder Waite tarot deck. I googled and found an article on the 'best' oracles, and they say...
There is no shortage of decks out there, but to narrow it down, pick one of the three main systems to follow. Rider-Waite-Smith is the most common and good for beginners. Tarot de Marseilles is the oldest, out of Italy, and lastly, Thoth and Golden Dawn centers around the occult. Ignore the myth that have to be gifted your first deck and buy one for yourself. The most important thing is to find a deck with art that speaks to you. Specifically, “one that you feel that makes you feel seen,” says Wen.
They mention, of course, the Ryder Waite, but they also have some other options that look good. I got my daughter the Modern Witches deck, which is based on Ryder Waite but updated. Ryder Waite is a little ugly, so finding a deck based on that but in a slightly different style is not a problem I think. I have a Rider tarot deck, based on the Ryder-Waite, but illustrated by a woman named Pamela Colman Smith. I think it's simple to read like the original but much prettier. There are different versions of her deck. There are other versions of that particular deck with different coloring or borderless or what have you. Look around to see. The deck I use the most is The Aquarian deck. I also have an app where I can pull a card or three or do a longer reading. It's called Wildwood Tarot (which also has a physical deck.)
Also, maybe you don't want tarot. There are other oracles out there. The article mentions a couple that I don't know, but I personally use Medicine Cards, which is based on native american animal spirits, or the Goddess Oracle, which shows goddesses from all over the world and different mythologies. I also use the I Ching-- but that one is terrible for anything emotional, but really good for spiritual or business questions. I have a Literary Witches Oracle that I haven't used that much yet, and some others that didn't really work for me, like Runestones. I think they worked but they didn't resonate, you know?
If you do want to start tarot, don't make things difficult for yourself. Choose one beginners book with meanings that works with the deck you chose and look at the interpretations when you read. Especially to start. You can keep an oracle journal to help you interpret, and write down the key phrases that are meaningful. A journal is really helpful in understanding the meanings of the cards, I think. Having a daily practice where you draw a card and write about the meaning is also good. I still use the book for ALL my oracles except Tarot, and still I use the book on tarot sometimes when I read for myself, because I find it helps me to be less biased when I am invested in the answer. I tend to be a little pessimistic and harsh on myself, so sometimes I need to book to tell me "This means GOOD things, lady."

hey is it ok if i ask for a bit of advice with writing ids? /gen. i've seen quite a few posts about people over-describing in their ids, and i have a feeling that i do that (i tend to overcomplicate everything i do skdsksjd). what kind of information is unnecessary in an id that i can try to cut out in future? thank you so much!
Hello! It’s totally okay to come to us with questions, we’re always happy to try and help!
To be completely honest this topic is something that a lot of us are still working on. The line between under and over-describing can be a bit hard to place, especially since it differs depending on the piece, and the person using the IDs. It’s impossible to make it perfect for everyone, but here are some tricks we’ve found helpful.
1) Ask yourself what the purpose of the piece is.
Art showing off a character design will have very different priorities than a comic or a meme. A drawing of a character just standing in a cool outfit suggests more in depth descriptions of their design whereas a long action filled comic should center the action or dialogue. Trying to describe characters and actions in the same part when a piece has multiple characters and/or significant action will often bog it down.
For example writing:
"X enters the room. They have blonde hair and pale freckled skin, and they wear a sweater vest over a white collared shirt and a pair of dangly cherry earrings. They are drawn from the waist up. They say to Y, 'What’s up?'"
doesn’t flow as well as writing:
“X enters the room and says to Y, 'What’s up?’”
Understanding the purpose of the piece often means being succinct for the sake of comedic timing, too. Putting the punchline of a comic in the middle of a paragraph of description makes it less impactful than saving it until the end, and breaking up dialogue with several sentences describing a background or outfit means people may lose the thread of the comic.
This doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t describe the character design if you can find a way to significantly shorten the description or include it separately. We’ll go over one possible way of including them in the line breaks section.
2) When dealing with complex settings, backgrounds, or clusters of items, ask yourself what needs to be described individually, and what can be generalized.
Complex and/or cluttered surroundings can get incredibly wordy when describing each component as it’s own thing. If certain components are not individually important to the viewer’s understanding the piece, generalizing or sometimes even leaving them out can significantly cut down on words. For example, writing:
“A mahogany shelf sits above his head. On it sits a blue mug with a spoon sticking out, a ceramic container filled with utensils, and a set of salt and pepper shakers.”
is significantly wordier than writing:
“A shelf holding various utensils and kitchen items sits above his head.”
Sometimes you can bear to cut individual details entirely if they aren’t particularly relevant to understanding the image. For example, if describing a drawing of characters at the beach, and there’s a buoy in the ocean way out in the distance, you probably don’t need to describe it unless it plays an active role in the piece.
3) When describing the appearances of characters, keep in mind what features are important to understanding the artist’s depiction.
Certain aspects of a character’s appearance can say a lot about how the artist wants them to be interpreted. Things like body frame, hair and clothing style, and especially race can vary drastically by artist, and in result change how the character is understood.
Other things like eye color, nose shape, or specific body proportions often do not change the general understanding of the character, and can cause the character description to become bloated. They typically should not be included.
There are certainly exceptions to this however, for example, if a character has unnatural features like glowing eyes or a snout, it changes how the character is meant to be perceived and should be described.
4) Play around with line breaks.
Sometimes pieces are just too complex to avoid having a long description. In order to make sure all important details are included while also including action, consider breaking the description up into chunks. Putting the action first and then writing out the character designs allows the people who want to know what’s going on in the image but don’t particularly care about designs to skip to the next post after the first paragraph, while still providing the descriptions for the people who do.
5) Be aware of what your audience already knows.
When there’s a reasonable expectation that your audience might already know something, it’s okay to use some shorthand. This comes up often when describing memes.
For example, writing:
The Spiderman pointing at himself meme, where one Spiderman is labeled X and the other is labeled Y.
is much more succinct than writing:
A screencap of a cartoon. Two people in identical Spiderman costumes are standing in front of an NYPD vehicle, with one facing away from the viewer and one facing toward the viewer. They are both pointing at each other in identical poses. The Spiderman facing away from the viewer is labeled X in white text. The Spiderman facing toward the viewer is labeled Y in white text.
You’re writing for an audience of Tumblr users, so you can assume most Tumblr users are familiar with the meme. If they aren’t, you’ve given them enough information to look up more about it.
This is also something to consider when describing fanart. Most podcast characters by nature don’t have canonical appearances, so the choice of how to portray a character is often intentional on the part of the artist and something worth paying attention to when considering the purpose of a piece. This isn’t the case for all media, though, and re-describing characters with canonical appearances over and over again isn’t necessary unless those appearances differ significantly from the norm.
-
We hope this was able to help! If anyone sees this and would like to add anything, please feel free to do so, and as always, if you have any more questions, feel free to reach out.

 Opinion time
Please note I am in no way attacking people who enjoy angst, write it, create art of it, etc. I understand people may find it enjoyable or cathartic, and are allowed to create what they want, express themselves, etc.
Ngl a lot of what's burnt me out on PLA is the angst and just having to focus so much on the parts of PLA that are sad. Some of it is being unable to scroll through Submas content without seeing majorly angsty or grimdark content...some of the jokes about them have worn me out as well because I’m just tired of the focus on them being separated. Then throw in combing an entire game, looking for things suggesting Ingo goes home in order to make reassurance posts and having to by default with that, focus on the fact that he's been separated from all that he knows and loves AND has amnesia...
I'd love to go back to the days where it was mostly shitposts or just art of them going about a typical day.
The angst is just so tiring. When I got into Submas, it was nice because they just kind of existed and didn’t have any actual canonical drama associated with them. It was a nice way to escape things I was dealing with in everyday life. I had a game suddenly change that, but to make it worse, there’s no way to escape the angst content. I used to seek out Submas content. Now I’m literally avoiding it for my own mental health.
I also have noticed two things that really bother me.
The first is I’ve come across at least one post where someone literally said they got into Submas for the angst. I’m not going to gatekeep or tell people how they can or cannot interpret characters, because gatekeeping is ridiculous and if I see content I don’t like, I don’t have to engage at all. I can just block and move on, like I have done with b*lnkshippers and pr*shippers. But that being said, in the canon of the games, these characters are nothing like their recent depictions (or even a lot of their depictions in the early 2010s), and they likely never will be. So from a canonical standpoint, you're not likely to get angsty content, so it's best to interact with like-minded fans. Please be respectful if someone says they're not interested in angst and don't force it on them.
The second is I’ve seen people who think Ingo looking miserable in PLA is a “glow up”. Not as in they find the design cool, but as in being tired and miserable makes him attractive. I’m really uncomfortable with this because as someone who has their own struggles, this feels like fetishization. It’s OK to look at a character and relate to them, or feel seen/represented by them. But if your only interest in or even attraction to this man is that he’s miserable (in PLA), and especially if you’d like him to stay miserable, that is not healthy. And actually, if you want Ingo to stay miserable or are fetishizing his misery, mental health, etc, I’d prefer you didn’t interact with me.
It hurts to feel like I can’t engage with something I enjoy anymore. While angst might be enjoyable or cathartic for some, many of us previously enjoyed Submas because of the lack of it.

Hey hun. So, I wanna ask, how does this last chapter made you feel?
For me I felt angry, then disappointed, then I just gave up lol. I'm gonna separate my Eren from whoever was that in chapter 139.
Also, will you stop making Ereri works? Pls don't! Your Ereri arts are what give me the zeal to write fanfics. Heck, it's because I saw one of them that I had the courage to dabble in this ship.
Sorry for the long ass message.

Coming for an AOT fan who isn't a shipper and from someone who likes Eren's character but doesn't see him as a big bad or Saint. The whole him being in love with Mikasa the whole time feels so freaking out of no where. And again not pissed cause of ships or stuff like that. I just feel like this is fan pandering.
Anonymous said:
I'm so confused...Eren didn't shed a tear when he sent that titan to kill his mom but he immediately broke down into tears on the ground when he heard that Mikasa might marry another man. What is going on...I guess I never understood his character after all sigh.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hooooo boy ok here we go.
We don’t think that it was necessarily an Eremika moment. Hear me out.
Is it possible to interpret it as “I guess Eren likes Mikasa romantically” and call it a day? Of course. But I think it’s a huge disservice to both characters to just end it at that and tie Eren’s motivation to wanting nothing but to be with Mikasa, because in that case he would’ve ran away and we would’ve had ourselves that cottagecore fantasy from the last chapter.
The thing is, it hadn’t even clicked as an Eremika romance confirmation to us before we read people’s reaction to it. We just laughed at how Eren throwing a tantrum is similar to how we see him – he’s being so hilariously selfish and capricious there.
We think Eren doesn’t want to die and be forgotten, and he knows that he is going to be forgotten eventually once his friends move on. And Mikasa loves him more than anyone in the world, so if even she moves on, it’d mean that no one is going to think about him anymore. Dying is scary, and what I see is a childish “I don’t want Mikasa to move on, I want her to think about me and I don’t care if I sound like a dick”, not “I want to kiss and hug Mikasa and actually I’ve been in love with her for years”.
I’m not sure why people are tying the rumbling to Mikasa and talk about how Eren simping for her resulted in this mess. It’s always been about Eren’s closest friends whom he wants to be happy and live a long life. He said it himself, and the story was heavily hinting on it, so Eren’s confession about all of it being for his gang didn’t surprise us at all. He just gave her a present (that dumb fantasy thing) as a means of gratitude for killing him and, more importantly, freeing Ymir, something along the lines.
We also need to keep in mind Isayama’s intentions in all of it: frankly, we don’t know for sure what he was trying to say, so we really look forward to any comments, interviews or any other content that would give more context or explanation. Maybe he was an Eremika shipper all along and forgot that he didn’t like the idea of childhood friends dating, who knows, but it really doesn’t feel like it? To us personally.
+ Why is it a bad thing that Eren did the rumbling for his friends? I don’t think that the fact that he had motives makes anything worse or better: once again, we kind of guessed that his plan was to make his friends into heroes that defeated big bad Eren. The idea of “uniting against the biggest evil” was discussed in SnK a lot of times, and it felt like the only solution to this situation. We’d be happy if Isayama came up with something smarter than our own ideas, but lol
To the Anon that talked about Eren not getting as emotional over his mom’s death: maybe I’m blind, but I felt like he almost had a breakdown when he was talking about it, and he’d have definitely started crying if Armin didn’t grab his hand and stopped him. He was already tearing up.
Tumblr media
When he talked about Mikasa, it was almost a comical moment: Eren sat there with his butt in the water screaming like an idiot. It was an embarrassing thing to say, this is why he got so emotional. And technically he started crying while he was talking about not wanting to die. I think it’s natural for him to cry there. It still feels more like “I don’t want to die and be forgotten” than “oh no Mikasa’s going to kiss another boy”. But Mikasa is dear to him, and his friends are dear to him, he’s just a person and he wants to live and spend time with them, because this is what makes him happy.
I don’t know. The only thing that’s bothering us now is whether or not Eren had romantic feelings towards Mikasa, because it really would be out of nowhere.
I’m not saying that it’s wrong to feel disappointed and that no one understands Eren’s character but us who think he doesn’t act ooc: everyone can feel whatever they want and have their own opinion. But I personally feel like a lot of disappointment in the fandom comes from wanting Eren to be more… I don’t want to say chadish, but I guess chadish. He’s just a very tired teen.
If we’re wrong about his feelings towards Mikasa, then sure, we’ll disown the manga from the high horse we’d put it on. We’re not saints, we don’t like this stuff, and it’s very easy to throw Isayama and our love for the manga away, no matter how much time and love we’ve dedicated to it.
(Oh, and to answer the question about us continuing drawing Ereri. The chapter didn’t change how we see characters or ships, and we don’t really care about canon ships, so nothing is going to change. Well, maybe there will be more bird smut lol but I really appreciate the fact that our works inspire people to create and to dive into the world of Ereri and other ships <3 thank you very much for that)

you have rly interesting takes abt wolfstar!! I was wondering if you had any head canons about the Prank like why Sirius did it and what Remus' reaction was?
hello and thank you and i’m So sorry that this has been sitting in my drafts for like Weeks at this point.... i’m physically incapable of doing anything intellectually demanding in a timely matter and this is such a hard topic because, like, i don’t know!! i’m not very well acquainted with the Fandom Mythology surrounding the Prank or the mainstream interpretation of events so i really don’t know what to make of it, especially in terms of sirius’s motivation. here are a few things that i referenced when typing this all out: meta meta/fic fic beautiful art
the first thing that is interesting to me, and something to keep in the back of our minds when thinking about this, is that when discussing the prank in the shack during PoA, sirius says that “it served [snape] right.”
also i think that the song hospital by the modern lovers possesses some outstanding post Prank vibes...
ok so re: sirius’s motivation. i don’t know. i think it was a combination of things. i don’t even think that sirius entirely knew why he did it, or what there was to gain.
i guess the thing to sort out is to what extent sirius factored remus into the equation. was he not thinking about remus at all and how it would affect him and just wanted to hurt snape because he hated him, or was he like “this is for remus and remus will think it’s funny too”?
i think that he felt slightly goaded by snape because snape was being a massive asshole trying to get them expelled, and he also just did not like him at all. like, the most obvious motivation or end goal in sirius telling him is that he just wanted to scare snape so he would leave them alone and also it would be a little funny because hahaha he is a slimey wizard nazi (at age 15/16 do you think sirius would be politically advanced enough to have a ‘punching nazis’ outlook on snape? i don’t know)
and i don’t think that he ever seriously thought that remus would react well (like, how could he? sirius had to have known that remus’s worst fear ever was hurting someone). and he was literally risking the entire school finding out he was a werewolf. but maybe a small part of sirius was like “take that snape!! that’s what you get for bullying my beautiful mysterious friend!! remus will love this lol”
but i think the thing that makes the most sense is that he wasn’t thinking about remus that much and didn’t think he would react well.
and here i where you can start thinking about sirius’s upbringing and how that affected how he viewed werewolves/remus.
i think that sirius was probably raised surrounded by some pretty intense anti-werewolf beliefs and he dealt with remus being a werewolf by 1. separating remus from the wolf and 2. kind of like romanticizing it. so much of sirius’s attraction to remus stemmed from this sort of fascination.. james was so similar to sirius and generally uncomplicated, but remus, even though he was kind of weird looking, always sort of elicited this morbid curiosity from him. and he saw remus’s lycanthropy as something he could fix, or at least help (see: the animagus thing, my personal headcanon that he was very into taking care of remus during their relationship). remus was his tragic werewolf friend. but remus never thought that sirius understood his lycanthropy the way remus wanted him to, that there was always this sort of tension, a lingering sense of “you think you’re so different from your family, but you’re not really.”
sirius could have thought that snape actually knew about remus and wanted to make him prove that he knew, like: “sirius, i know what remus’s secret is, hint hint wink wink” “okay, if you really know then go to the shrieking shack,” like snape kind of goaded sirius into telling him, and sirius thought that he would know better. but that is just such a profoundly stupid thing for sirius to do, and i feel like putting too much blame on snape is being too generous to sirius.
leescoresbies has an interesting headcanon that the prank happened around the time sirius ran away from home and he was thus was very emotionally volatile. and so it was in part a result of sirius’s trauma/anger/joy, and i like that idea, those emotions had to have been a factor. and if you are someone that has a really hard time reconciling with sirius’s shitty behavior as a teen, that’s kind of an easy/ canon compliant way of saying “yeah, he was an asshole, but there was also this other thing going on...etc.” however, i don’t think that was the only reason, or even the main reason. i think that sirius is a deeply flawed person and thinking about the prank from the perspective of said flawed-ness makes his and remus’s relationship all the more complicated/interesting.
and unfortunately a lot of this sort of boils down to whether or not sirius wanted to kill or seriously injure snape. those were the stakes he was dealing with in this situation. i don’t think that sirius wanted to kill him, just because that’s not really the sort of thing teenagers do, you know. and, as further evidenced by how he treated kreacher, sirius doesn’t always treat those he considers lesser than him with any sort of respect. maybe sirius just didn’t care that much about whether or not he died. he knew on an intellectual level that he was sending snape to his likely death, but maybe he just didn’t make that calculation in the moment? like sirius was so used to not facing consequences that maybe he thought things wouldn’t turn out that badly.
i can understand, maybe, in sirius’s version of events, in his own reckless, teenage narrative, that he thought it would be okay to hurt snape. but remus? did he seriously fail to make the calculation that he would be turning him into a murderer? what sirius did was such a major, major trespass of trust/friendship in a way that is actually sort of unforgivable.
doesn’t sirius say in PoA “i’d rather die than betray my friends!” ? well, he did : / he betrayed remus..
and i think that remus would be massively upset and i don’t think he ever really completely forgave him.
when did this happen? 5th or 6th year? i think that by this time remus would kind of be relegated to a state of melodramatic, shame-ridden misery that came along with being sort of in love with sirius. and so the prank really tore him apart, because of course it would. remus was so used to being defined by his lycanthropy, used to facing discrimination, and his friends were his one refuge from that. but then sirius who he loved used him basically as a means to an end. what sirius did was incredibly exploitative— he exploited remus’s marginalized identity for personal gain without thinking about how it would affect him. and i think that remus really did care about him enough to want to forgive him. he probably felt like he had to forgive him (his friends were too important for him to lose, and, importantly, there was probably this feeling of “i am a werewolf and therefore i need to be extraordinarily forgiving in order to be perceived as non threatening, and this is just how the world treats people like me and i can’t and shouldn’t fight back”). and those are just such deeply fucked up feelings to feel towards a friend, especially one you admire and have a major soul crushing crush on.
i think that there was a period of time after the fact when they weren’t really talking, remus was very rightfully upset, everyone was angry at sirius... i think that sirius apologized, but sort of begrudgingly. because twenty years later he still thought that snape got what he deserved.
at times i think that remus was someone who saw his relationships as very transactional. and initially he felt in debt to the other marauders because of the animagus thing and just because they were his friends. and, as dear @direwolf-summer said in this post, the prank changed the dynamic between remus and sirius: remus was no longer the one in debt, sirius was. and that is such an interesting point. remus starts demanding more from him and he finally feels that, even though sirius was really popular and closer to james or whatever, they were on even standing. this is how he was able to be more forward about his feelings— sirius stopped being this precious object who demanded endless patience in order to retain as a friend (or so he thought, this is remus’s insecurity showing). he stopped feeling so bad about having a crush on sirius. he’d be like “fuck you sirius. i’m in love with you. deal with it and you have to be nice about it in order to repay your debts.” like  he wouldn’t say that out loud but it would be in his internal monologue and he would kinda hint at it.
there’s that line in eclipse and transit where remus says: “You say one thing and do another and half the time you don’t even try to say it, it’s like, I don’t know, like you’re daring me to leave. And everything—every single thing Sirius, it all comes back to January of sixth year, whether you’ll ever admit it or not. Or whether you even realize it” and i think it’s fitting. during fights remus probably would bring it up, and sirius would fail to understand why remus never got over it. like, sirius: “i apologized i was 15!!” and remus: “this is bigger than just that, what you did was emblematic of your flaws as a person and how even though you understand me more than almost anyone else you still don’t understand me completely and it frustrates me!!! and also i feel like you never fully understood that what you did was extraordinary fucked up.”
and i think that remus was so in love with sirius that he did forgive him, or otherwise allowed his love and affection to forget about it. but it was always bubbling under the surface...and that’s why their relationship was sort of volatile, that’s why he was so willing to believe that sirius was the spy (as in, “he betrayed me, why wouldn’t he have betrayed james and lily?”)
now i’m remembering when, in one of the snape’s memory /pensieve / flashback scenes in OotP, sirius says “i wish it was the full moon” and remus says, darkly, “you might.” now, we don’t know if that scene takes place before or after the Prank (before probably? idk), but i feel like it further compounds the extent to which sirius seems woefully unaware that remus is a werewolf and it’s not something he can separate from himself and that lycanthropy impacts every facet of his life. sirius came to understand it as just some fun thing to do every month. his sort of ignorance towards other people’s needs and experiences is also further evidenced by how he treated harry like he was james. sirius has a pretty good track record of taking other people’s pain and making into something for him to enjoy. and he doesn’t do so in a way that is entirely selfish either, i think he really thought he was helping harry and remus. maybe it all goes back to his family and childhood trauma or something (doesn’t everything? “it all started one afternoon in the 1960s..”)
