These deep-dwelling fish can see through their own foreheads.
Even in a world full of adaptations for seeing in near-total darkness, the barreleye fish (Macropinna microstoma) stands out as one of the most bizarre. Two small indentations where eyes might normally appear on a fish are actually the barreleye’s olfactory organs, and its eyes are two glowing green orbs behind its face that gaze up towards the top of its head. In 2009, MBARI researchers showed that the fish can rotate its eyes towards the front to see its food when eating. Before that, scientists believed that the barreleye’s gaze was fixed looking straight up. Researchers think that the fish hovers below a siphonophore’s tentacles to steal food.

Amazing how we keep discovering new things. Back in my day barreleyes like Opisthoproctus soleatus looked like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
because they were only ever known from dead specimens dredged up from the deep.
Except when a barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) was actually filmed alive in 2008, turns out it actually has a transparent dome over its head that collapses at the surface.
Tumblr media
The dome helps it gather even more light into those big upward-facing eyes! It’s like it’s wearing a deep sea helmet!!
And then you look at the old illustrations and realize the deflated membrane was there all along, you just didn’t realize it!
I know the blobfish is the gold standard for “fish that looks completely different at the surface” but this is one of the ones that I knew of as a kid and blew my mind when I saw the live footage.
Next time we’ll talk about gulper eels

Daily fish fact #671
Brownsnout spookfish!
Tumblr media
The eyes of this species of barreleye are essentially split into two, the tubular main eyes looking up to the surface and smaller outgrowths on the sides looking down into the depths. The downwards-looking eye halves are interesting in that they lack a lens completely, instead they reflect light into the side retinas via the use of "mirrors" made up of crystals! This makes the brownsnout spookfish one of the only vertebrates ever to use a reflective layer in the eye to focus on an image (the tapetum lucidum of other vertebrates is used to increase the amount of light entering the eye, not to create the image itself).
Here's an image in case what I'm trying to convey isn't quite clear:

A set of stickers based on those deep sea fish I drew in Aseprite a while back.
Available here
[ID: A sticker set of various deep sea fish done mostly in varying shades of teal. Fish include the black swallower, the barreleye, the anglerfish, the gulper eel, the frilled shark, and the lanternfish. There's a ruler along the left side for scale. /ID]

In the act of working on Ponzu’s reference and solidifying that she’s an ambassador from a deep-water zora realm, I got to thinking about what the other residents might look like. Very rough concepts here.
Ponzu is based on a species of chimaera that travels to shallower waters at night/to spawn, so by extension she’s more suited to go ashore to the main zora domain for diplomatic reasons. The other deep-water zora, however... generally most of them are not so suited to it. Both as far as what they can put up with physically, and how their appearance is taken by the mainlanders. They can be standoffish towards anyone not of their realm, don’t speak much to the point they can be mistaken for mute entirely, and the inability for some of them to emote with facial expressions makes them come off as unnerving.

Mermay 2023 - Marine Biology Influenced Merfolk: Odd-Bodied Edition
Tumblr media
Continuing this month’s theme of Biology Influenced Merfolk, this week I did a theme of “weird-bodied Merfolk” inside and out. Be it fish with see-through heads (the Barreleye) or fish with literal urea in their systems (the Greenland Shark). There’s a lot of fun things to apply from nature!
Top Row:
- Old Man Ulrikson - Greenland Shark: The oldest person in town, clocking in at 499 years old. While most Greenlanders stay up north and act as sages, he likes it where he lives in Tridentsfall thank you very much. Also, no parasites in the eye for him!
- Bob Sunfish - Sunfish: A Sunfish Merman with a crippling fear of predators and the dark. The Sealions meanwhile think he’s an odd curiosity.
Middle Row:
- Benny and Fred - Halibut and Flounder: Criminal Masterminds, Master and Apprentice... at least in their heads. They’re more harmless than anything.
- Orville Colddweller - Barreleye: The guy who greets shallow-water Merfolk into the depths. He kinda wonders if he could have taken a different path in life, but decides against it.
Bottom Row:
Anat the Unlucky - Tully Monster: The unluckiest girl of the Primeval Age, whose unique look and looooooong list of misfortunes were something to behold. Tried to look for an apprenticeship and got one... who was the worst possible option.
“Honest Nasir” - Opabinia: Anat’s “mentor” and perhaps one of the most infamous conmen of his age... who kept his long list of complaints just because. Based on the knife one of said tablets... he may have gone too far one day.

Barrel eyes, they’re watching you! 👀
The barreleye fish, Macropinna microstoma, has extremely light-sensitive eyes that can rotate within a transparent, fluid-filled shield on its head. The fish’s tubular eyes are capped by bright green lenses. Here, the eyes are pointed upward in search of food. The two spots above the barreleye’s mouth—where we might expect to see eyes on a fish—are actually olfactory organs called nares, which are similar to human nostrils. Learn more about this extraordinary animal of the deep.

Daily fish fact #278
Barreleyes!
Tumblr media
They have barrel-shaped tubular eyes, which are enclosed inside their head under a layer of transparent soft tissue! They use their peculiar eyes to look for prey that might be floating directly above them; they live deep underwater just at the edge of where light penetration ends, but thanks to their eyes with a large number of rods (a type of photoreceptor) they can see very well into the waters above.
