But yes hohoho Kathryn and Chakotay say their goodbyes to one another, Chakotay mentions that if she’s in need of anything to then by all means contact him/the fleet, Kathryn defiantly says it’ll only be a few weeks til she returns, internally disputing any other alternative. It is a very strange experience to have tens of millions of people like your work and then later have tens of millions of people hate your work. I cannot fully recommend the experience--although as miseries go, it is certainly a minor one--but for me, personally, it was hard. I often handled it poorly, and I feel a lot of regret about that, but I also think it’s a hard thing to navigate.

For a long time, I thought I wouldn’t write again. Writing leaves you so vulnerable, like a patient etherized upon the table, as Eliot put it. And being vulnerable sucked. But then it turns out that not being vulnerable--shielding yourself behind endless layers of ironic detachment and feigned coolness--also sucks. It removes you from the reality of others’ suffering, and makes you think that only certain kinds of problems are really real and worthy of attention, and maybe even that only certain kinds of people are really real and worthy of attention. 

So in the end I decided to go back to writing with much MORE vulnerability instead of less. In Turtles All the Way Down, I wrote as close to the bone of my own mental illness as I could get. And in The Anthropocene Reviewed, I wrote about myself for the first time, my way of looking at the world and the people I love in it.

I don’t know if my work has gotten better or worse as a result of the weird trip I went on, but the big lesson from those strange days for me is that if I must choose between being cold to the reality of feeling and being cringe, I always want to be cringe. I want and need to write because it is my way of understanding myself, because, just as with reading stories, writing them is an “axe to break up the frozen see within us,” to borrow a very good line from Kafka. 

I am so grateful to have been read so generously by so many people. The hard things that come with that gig took over my life for a while, but these days I’m able merely to be grateful, and overwhelmed, and astonished. So anyway if you’ve ever read one of my books, thanks. I don’t say that enough. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Each flavor complimented the other, and while his sleepy mind could only tell cinnamon from the smell, he didn't mind cinnamon. Well, it could be how sweet it smells. He wasn't the largest fan of sweets, but what could possibly go wrong?

Each step increased that slightly uneasy feeling. His mind slipped away from the smell, for it couldn't be that: worry drifting into his mind. Somethings wrong. Something must be. Maybe its with me? Am I sick? This feeling could easily be sickness, and I'm mixing it up with anxiety. Ugh.

Opening the door to the kitchen, Law made a mental note to keep a physical distance from anyone until he did a check-up on himself. He was met with the kitchen to be crowded-

I believe @cambriancrew was talking not too long about medical forums they're in discussing denying treatment to patients who have DID. This is attributed to the false perception of a mass amount of fakers. A perception driven by places like r/systemscringe.

This is what truly terrifies me about these cringe communities.

When you're seeking treatment, you don't know who the people are you're being treated by.

Maybe u/manditobandito isn't someone who gets to decide whether you can get the pain relievers you need, or even life-saving medical treatment. But someone from these communities could be.

They could decide that because you're plural or have a dissociative disorder, that you're malingering and must therefore be faking whatever other conditions you say you have.

And these people won't be basing this on their education. No. Your physicians won't have much more education into mental illnesses than most random people you meet on the street.

Especially for DID, which is barely covered in actual psych classes.

They'll be basing it on what they've heard around.

Think for a moment about the type of misinformation they typically spread, like what I recently debunked over here...

My fear is medical professionals hearing lies like this be repeated and deciding "well, the patient can hear their alters and has fictives so they must be faking," and choosing to deny patients much-needed treatment.

And to be fair, these cringe communities are only one small part of the problem.

But they are part of the problem. And the misinformation they spread can cause real damage.

may or may not have stayed up all night reading this book as soon as I could get my hands on it but anyway I have some thoughts and most of them are screaming.

I really loved the book. Did it have flaws? Yes. Do I care? No. I'm 22, the targeted age range is something like 10-16. When I first got into this series I was the same age as nico. It's been a long journey getting older and changing and healing. Seeing that for Nico was all I really wanted from this book.

Also, realistic relationship struggles and growth!! Loved that!! Having a chronic illness is hard, your partner watching you suffer with it is also hard for them!! Having conversations and misunderstandings and awkward moments is how it goes!! After being in a 3 year relationship with someone I love very much I'm like,,, yes!! Thank you!! I have lifelong chronic illness!! It's not going away I gotta learn to live with it it's a part of me!! My partner struggles with it but is trying so hard and I love them so much!!! But I'm so much more than a pile of suffering and that's the point!!! You choose to keep trying and that's the point the book makes!! there's a whole scene about it and it's so important!!! Will starts to be more accepting and understanding and we love to see it! Nico accepts he needs to let himself move on and that it's ok to do that and not be angry with your past self for trying to stay alive!!

I make no sense and I don't care. But also, they're cringey and memey and dumb. They're hysterical and going a little bit crazy and they love each other and like, I'm not ok. Neither are they. Its been an extremely stressful week for them.

And I don't think it's super out of character because we barely know these people!! Nico has been suffering and in survival mode almost the whole time we have known him!! Will has been a background character most of the time!! Nico was a bubbly 10 year old and Will was like 4 sentences. Nico has made occasional/awkward/dark jokes and Will was shown to be stubborn and concerned and caring because demigods are ridiculously hard to keep alive. Let them be weird and cringey they're literal teenagers. Have you been in a high school with people obnoxiously dating. They are. The worst.

I know I keep getting sidetracked but. Point is. nico and will seem out of character because of circumstances and time skips probably. Nicos finally in a stable place and can actually process things, mans is curious about the world he's in no wonder he's a memelord the internet just does that to you. People change when they're not in survival mode, I definitely am not the same person I was when I was 16. Not even the same person I was when I was 18. Or 20. Like, mental health glow ups bring out some of the best parts of you.

AND THANK YOU PIPER I FEEL SO SEEN RN, don't know what label I fit under, I am confusion but it's ok!! I am a big ole ace spectrum mess and maybe tomorrow it'll be different! Either way the book had a lot of great moments and no it's not the same as old rr books but it was never gonna be, the nostalgia associated with the original pjo series means nothing will ever live up to those books and that's kind of just life for some of yall. fuck knows I crave the joy I felt playing crash bandicoot for the first time. I miss that time of my life and it's ok to miss that but it's also ok to move forward and find new things that bring life joy and meaning!!

anyway. I enjoyed the sun and the star and I will continue to enjoy it regardless of what other people think, I can like things just because I do, or just because they make me happy. And this book definitely made me happy. Also holy fuck I need some sleep. Sorry about all the exclamation points it's all that's keeping me awake!!

Hey since it’s disability pride month I want to talk about the ways that you might be accidentally contributing to ableism. If you do these things then it does not mean you’re a bad person, there’s a high chance that you didn’t know you were causing harm. I’m making this post to make light of these issues and so that you can improve.

Participating in the trend of “fake disorder/disability cringe”. This is a well known issue amongst disabled people but I think a lot of able people still don’t know this is problematic. Many disabled people have to deal with being called fake both irl and online (even by medical professionals). Making and spreading content about this often hurts more then it helps

Participating in cringe culture. Honestly cringe culture is awful for so many reasons but ableism is a big one. Cringe culture usually shames people for acting in a way that is socially unacceptable, usually this shows itself in shaming people for having interests that are to childish, edgy, weird, niche, popular, or just generally laughed at or in liking something “too much”. This can be especially harmful to people who don’t have a strong grasp of those social norms such as neurodivergent people, especially when it comes to “liking something to much”.

Jokes centered around shaming people for poor hygiene. I honestly can’t think of a single person who chooses to neglect personal cleanliness. I can however think of multiple people who struggle with hygiene due to disabilities. Some people might not be able to wash dishes due to sensory issues, or maybe fatigue keeps you from being able to clean your house, maybe mobility issues causes you to struggle with tasks like getting dressed, and many people with mental disorders/illnesses can struggle with executive dysfunction which makes it incredibly difficult actually get up and take a shower. I personally struggle with changing, showering, brushing my tears due to a mix of fatigue and executive dysfunction and I literally can’t do the dishes without constantly gagging. I haven’t told anyone (including my therapist) about these struggle’s because of stigma and fear of judgement.

Making fun of people who live with their parents. @2020knives made a great post about this here that I highly recommend reading, but to summarize a lot of disabled people have to live with their families for their own safety and the heavy stigma associated with this way of living can be quite harmful to someone’s social and mental health.

Calling people lazy. This is similar to the issues hygiene centered jokes. I don’t think that people should ever shame someone for being lazy (outside of like, billionaires) as a lot of people can be struggling to do the bare minimum. Some people *need* to lay in bed for long periods of time and shaming them for that is unproductive and harmful. Not everyone has the ability to get up and work everyday and no one should be made to feel lesser for that.

This is nowhere near everything so please add anything I missed. Please reblog and share this message where you can, I think that by talking about some of the harmful things that we do we can build a better community.

Hot take: Betty Grof is the actual villain in Adventure Time

Yall just gonna let FaC tell you Simon was a selfish jerk and what happened to Betty was his fault like Betty isn't totally yandere for their entire relationship.

Betty invites herself on a trip with Simon, Betty decides not to go to Australia because she finds out Simon likes her even though he didn't ask her to do that, Betty ignores Simon saying losing her was devastating to him and jumps through the portal to try to skip over whatever boring part of Simon's life he was talking about, Betty makes Simon be crazy again, refuses even talking to the Ice King until she has exhausted all other options (including giving him brain damage and stealing his beloved little guy), gives up trying to talk to him after like ten minutes, and then tries to kill him, then almost ends reality itself over him = Simon being selfish?

Why *would* Simon get on the bus with her? He doesn't have a ticket for Australia! He just wanted to tell her how he felt before she left!

Simon uses a poor choice of words when he says "I forgive you for leaving me" but he's not the best with people and he was clearly just trying to make sure she felt no guilt about his terrible fate or imminent death. And then she interrupts him in order to literally abandon his past self in his hour of fucking need so that she can skip the unpleasantness, without knowing what it was or how long it lasted. She put herself in Ooo. Then she insists he become the Ice King again so she can save him, but doesn't stay with the Ice King or even talk to him. She leaves him rather than work on the problem with him by her side. She is never apologetic for this utter rejection of the Ice King at any point. She is willing to kidnap Gunter just for a chance to give Ice King brain damage and see if that brings Simon back. She is willing to use IK as a spell battery (which is where he must get the idea to use Choose Goose- I felt like that was both out of left field and out of character tbh) to go back in time and prevent him putting on the crown.

No matter what the Ice King, who is a version of Simon, asks of her she refuses. She does not want to know his friends, she doesn't even know Marceline's name at any point iirc. We don't know if she ever sat down and listened to an explanation of what has happened, but I am guessing not or she would know that the Mushroom War would have killed them both if he hadn't put the crown on, not to mention left Marceline alone to either die or be corrupted by the vampires.

As another fan pointed out, she could have shared the crown with him, shared the burden with him, but she didn't want to do the hard work of loving him as he was. She wanted him to be exactly how she had originally perceived him to be. She was willing to risk the lives of everything in existence to force the mental illness out of him rather than help him deal with it in a healthy way.

Yeah, she sacrificed everything for him, entirely by choice! Simon never asked her to do any of it. In fact, both he and the Ice King asked her specifically not to do what she was doing multiple times.

Simon managed to take care of a scared little girl during a nuclear zombie apocalypse while going slowly insane, summoned her deadbeat demon dad in an effort to try to keep her safe when he couldn't anymore, and was basically guilty only of the crime of wanting a little closure.

Hell, even the Ice King was better at caring about people. He was willing to walk through lava for his Goontz. His admiration for Finn and Jake led to him becoming a better person over time, once they accepted him, and he never forgot about Marceline even if he didn't remember how they became friends.

Maybe I take it personally as someone with a mental disability (autism) but I think the way Betty treated the Ice King, and Simon, was disgusting. Simon was a good person. He had a few character flaws, like everyone else in the universe, but fundamentally he just wanted to help people and to share his life with someone special. Hell, the Ice King's ability to treat Gunter better than Evergreen treated the original Gunter is what finally broke the curse of the crown. Did yall miss that part too? They're different versions of the same dude.

I cannot believe how dirty FaC did him in the ending. Totally uncalled for. Literally no one asked for that.

I'm with the people who wanted Simon and Ice King to interact, to have Marceline play a bigger role in the story both because she is literally Simon's best friend and because she's fucking awesome, and oh yeah- to not be condescendingly spoon-fed the conclusions that the showrunner wanted people to draw only to then totally contradict them two minutes later because he couldn't keep a coherent narrative running if his life depended on it. Man did us all dirty with that half-assed ending to a convoluted story.

Betty had to become Golb to clean up the mess she herself had made, and it seemed like she understood and accepted that. That act was her redemption. Why take that away just to shit on the character who arguably suffered more than just about anyone else in the narrative? Simon had magic alzheimers for a thousand fucking years and this asshole is saying he deserved it. I can't even.

And another thing:

If their genders were reversed, do you think people would still defend Betty so much? I highly doubt it, and I find that messed up. Women can be the toxic side of a relationship. Men can be victims. It's almost 2024 we're still not able to see a failed hetero relationship as anything but the guy's fault? Come on.

Eris:

favorite thing about them: there's an endless list of things I love about her, but one of the main ones is that "recovery is a spiral, not a circle" aspect of her. How sometimes your experiences change you so much that you can never return to the way you used to be, but that doesn't mean you can't heal. How these shadows will always remain with you, but you can use them to your advantage and draw something good out of them. It gives me a lot to think about, what with my own journey of wrestling with mental disorders for almost 8 years and slowly moving towards the realisation that maybe I will never recover = revert to the time before the illness

least favorite thing about them: there are a few instances of her just... forgetting fun exists? Like she *does* have a quite dry sense of humour and she can be witty, but at a few moments in the game she berates other characters for joking around in a way that doesn't feel natural at all to me, as if only to keep the veneer of her being the Serious One. It's odd, and a bit cringe

Reading Umineko for fun and profit? hopefully?

multiple of my twitter mutuals love this game and talk about it all this time. and it looks really interesting, doesnt it, despite its incredibly intimidating length.

so, there is very little going in that i know about! and i am excited to experience it. :) (assuming i can fight my way through the whole thing) apparently they are all on an island. and someone dies. or something like that. if you are around people who love the game, it is inevitable to know some of the main characters, at least on a surface level. there is obviously beatrice, the woman in the painting, who my (similarily clueless friend) once called "the joker for trans women", which accurately describes her vibes. (i mean this in the most positive way. i am on the edge of my seat) otherwise i really only know battler because of his stupid name (its like hes a shonen protagonist - he has to BATTLE. FIGHT MAN) and the two girls who frequently get drawn alongside each other (the blond and the blue one) that aside, i had the vague mind to ask my friend for specific content warnings i usually look out for and they arent actually in there! even though my friend described the game as "well, in theory, umineko needs a bucket full of content warnings but if i were to list them like an encyclopedia, it would spoiler half of the thing" (great sign)

anyway, so i will write whatever thoughts i have about it. this absolutely will involve spoilers. the version i have is english and has newer sprites. (sort of sad, i actually genuinely think the original round boxxing glove artstyle has an incredible amount of personality to it and despite being wonky, the facial expressions are great)

intro + opening

kinzo in his musty dusty study talks to danjo, his doctor. despite them being friends, their relationship as a doctor and resisting patient is likened to a game of chess. and kinzo is obviously losing. i really like the analogy. his struggle with alcohol and health and his inability to improve his habits are direct moves against his friends medical advise. yet he is also framed as a very wealthy character, a king of sorts. so either way, whether he lives (the doctor convinces him) or dies (he succumbs to alcoholism), the king is lost. is this purposeful? who knows. really paints a picture of him though; there is nothing he wishes to write in his will, he needs no advise, he is actively destroying himself, and he wont leave any inheritance. so adding to his physical health, he really isnt doing well mentally, huh... makes me wonder How Much Of his sickness is related to drinking. it seems like something else is going on, too. him dying to alcoholism would paint a different picture than him being terminally ill and choosing to end his life this way (while still suffering from alcoholism but! you know). maybe then the lost king makes sense - he is lost either way, but he could still choose to make a few last good moves. also he made some sort of contract with beatrice and she has him wrapped around her pinky. well, we shall see.

this line specifically does not seem to bode well. beatrice what are you going to do to those people.

also i didnt watch the opening. my friend told me to watch this one instead :) good music

(points at her.... white woman.... i think) i wonder how the flight attendants knew how to pronounce all that. its funny to imagine the staff took little notes on it when they checked in.

knowing battler is a mamas boy is a very interesting little bit of info. "father issues damage you but mother issues rewrite your dna" or however that post goes. i absolutely believe in this. its horrifying. knowing battlers mother died and then he lived with his grandparents AND THEN THOSE DIED TOO. GIVE HIM A BREAK!!!! ..... wait this game is about mysterious murders isnt it. oh god.

we are informed there used to be a torii on the coastline of the island but it got destroyed by a lightning. ominous. maria also reacts to this. kumasawa wants to elaborate further on local myths but jessica stops her. there are also no seagulls (ah.... namedrop) to be seen anywhere. lets put a pin in all that for now. children with promonitions are a common trope after all.

now this is a bit of a personal thing but the fact they have a rose garden in full bloom on october is ridiculous. and youre trying to tell me they smell too, despite obviously being modern crossbreeds? get real.

“Cringe” Side: Ebony, any pronouns, primarily comprised of my being a furry, being otherkin, and my love of fortnite and other “cringe” things. dresses in the most convoluted scene get up you’ve ever seen. i cant describe it. wears ray bans. he’s basically a grown up who’s also a child skjdjdjd very colorful and hyperactive. probably also includes my mental illnesses/disabilities? exists as a cool reminder that cringe is awesome and im awesome for being cringe :3
