I had dreamed about photographing polar bears for a long time. Some time ago my hobby, wildlife photography, ceased to be just a hobby and turned into a large part of my life. And if you devote so much time to an activity then your goals should be ambitious. Most of all I like to take pictures of large marine animals, whether on land or under water. Not everyone knows, but zoologists classify polar bears as marine mammals since they spend most of their time on ice floes away from land. And their paws even have webbing.
There are only a few places on the planet where polar bears can be found in large numbers. One of them is Russia’s Wrangel Island, a nature reserve under Unesco protection that is often called a polar bear maternity ward. The place is very inaccessible, which may be bad for tourists but is great for the animals.
Preparations for the expedition to Wrangel took nearly two years, and last August we finally set off for the north of Chukotka on a small ice-class sailing yacht. We proceeded about 2,000km (1,200 miles) along the coast, stopping in deserted bays and photographing grey and humpback whales. We met an incredible number of different birds, several brown bears, sea lions and seals. We went scuba diving in the waters of the Chukchi Sea, which turned out to be full of life. I felt as if I was in a parallel universe. Days and weeks passed. Landscapes changed dozens of times: sunny pebble beaches, steep cliffs, mountains and tundra. Finally, after passing Cape Dezhnev and heading for Wrangel Island, we began to encounter floating sea ice, which was unusual for the time of year. It had been assumed that the ice edge would be much farther north.
One day, bad weather was expected and the captain approached a small island, Kolyuchin, to take shelter from the storm. Kolyuchin is known for the polar weather station that operated on it in Soviet times. Though the station was closed in 1992, the abandoned village still stands on the island.
The stormy wind and rain and the neglected buildings on the rocky shores all served to make everything happening seem surreal. Suddenly we noticed movement in the windows of the houses.
Someone took out some binoculars and we saw the heads of polar bears. Fog, a place long deserted by people, polar bears – it was the perfect setting.
The bears walked around the houses and among barrels left on the island a long time ago. There were about 20 animals in sight at the same time, mostly males. The females kept to the side with their cubs, closer to the shores of the island. Barrels are a well-known problem in the Russian Arctic. Back in the days of the USSR, fuel was delivered to the station in them, but it was very expensive to take the barrels back, so they were simply discarded.
It was too dangerous to land on the island that day, so I took pictures from a drone equipped with special low-noise propellers. I also used certain tricks of the trade that allowed me to shoot the animals without disturbing them. After a while, the bears practically ignored the unusual buzzing.
Later I asked one of Russia’s top polar bear experts, Anatoly Kochnev, what causes the animals’ behaviour – why do they love to sit in the buildings? The biologist, who worked in Chukotka and on the island of Kolyuchin for many years, told me that, first of all, polar bears are very curious by nature, so they always attempt to get through any unlocked window or door. And secondly, unfortunately, these animals were traditionally hunted, and so they use these houses as a form of protection from humans.
But then he told me something even more interesting. It turns out that bears very rarely appear on the island in such numbers. No one knows why, but once every nine years the floating ice remains near the shore in summer. Consequently, the bears do not travel far to the north with the ice, as usual, and take up residence in the abandoned polar station. We saw proof of this later on when we met almost no bears on Wrangel Island to the north.
Though several months have passed since the expedition, I still sometimes see polar bears in decaying windows before my eyes when falling asleep. And looking at the main photo in my life at the moment, the one named House of Bears, I think that sooner or later all human-made things on Earth will cease to exist – buildings, cars and computers will all meet their end. But life is eternal. These bears will continue to hunt, swim among ice floes and explore islands even when civilization ceases to exist. But life will remain eternal only if we humans finally begin to take care of the planet and the living creatures that need our protection.

SPEAKING OF READING OF BOOKS
So I've been going through a bunch of Arctic books--short version: it's wondrous and depressing because of the whole climate crisis dealio--mainly for fanfic references, but that got me thinking and remembering:
I love Tundra Man but the thing that drives me crazy in MM11 is thematically, he's the outsider--all the other RMs' stages deal with their place of work or reference their whole deal-- You fight Bounce Man in Boing-Boing Park, Fuse Man in his electric plant, Impact Man continues the job he was assigned, Blast Man destroys Flower Land, Torch Man sets fire to his camp, Block Man makes a grand structure like he's always wanted...
Tundra Man, though? He freezes a city and takes over a museum. How does that thematically connect to his whole deal as a 1) polar exploration/development robot 2) who modified himself to be a figure skater???
It doesn't really, it's just a general ice theme. He takes over a museum, fossils abound, you fight a robot display that has a mechanical mammoth. All cute allusions to the general Ice Age and maybe an earlier ice robot with Freeze Man and T-rex boss fight.
Except nothing about Tundra Man’s profile has him working with fossils or the ice age or the museums. In fact, it has him working squarely in the present with him supposed to be observing and exploring of the Arctic. His name is Tundra Man where the TUNDRA at???
Well, apparently
His theme is…turning the city into a “barren polar icescapes with permafrost”. That IS what tundra is, I suppose. “...A vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America in which the subsoil is permanently frozen.” I certainly don’t see any trees. :U
Kinda random but nevertheless, mystery solved, I guess.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE
My man Tundra turns a city into a tundra, and somehow or the other, brings along a couple of animal friends to populate it. No one really asks where or how a stage’s enemies come from (reprogrammed by Wily? Made by Wily? Or do they just follow along the boss of any given stage?) Judging from their profile, Snow Robbits were probably made along with Tundra Man so presumably are Cossack Labs creations. Snow Robbits are obviously arctic hares.
But what about Ice Swans?
I love those things but I admittedly don’t remember swans being mentioned in any of the books I’ve read. I’m more likely to read about arctic terns or eider ducks or seagulls. So why swans? That’s so random. Is it because swans are associated with elegance and that’s kinda how Tundra plays?
I read “Siberian Crane” and thought “oh hey a Russian arctic bird. I wonder why they didn’t choose something like that instead of swans. Why swans anyway?”
AND THEN
Why yes I did lose my shit
SWANS
But wait! The pic above don’t really look like the swans in the game, right? It even says all-black bills.
The Ice Swans don’t even look like the general image of the swan, which are primarily mute swans. Maybe even black or trumpeter.
Then again, it’s hard to say Snow Robbits look like actual Arctic hares, yeah?
But, still, Ice Swans look a more natural than Snow Robbits. And if you check the swans above, whooper swans look a lot like Ice Swans. But whooper swans AREN’T tundra swans. So what gives?
I already had a sneaking suspicion, quickly confirmed by a Google search.

Bewick’s swan is specifically the ARCTIC RUSSIAN one.
The black-and-yellow-bill, the arctic habitat, the smaller size compared to the other swans…
Ice Swans–Tundra’s SWANS–are very specifically the ARCTIC RUSSIAN ones. I’m so, so utterly delighted by this. That is SO ADORABLE omggggggggggg
So, yeah, so while I’ll always be a little driven crazy by how Tundra’s stage isn’t so neatly thematically perfect like the rest of the MM11 crew, discovering this specific detail just turned that around for me.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Assassination
PAIRING: Yelena Belova x Reader
SUMMARY: My new girlfriend takes meeting the relatives to a whole new level.
It's cloudy up ahead, but patches of sunlight leak through certain gaps like chinks in the sky's armour, and a warm silver lines the clouds as the sun sets behind them. There are no pink or orange hues in the sunset this cloudy evening, just tinted blue and cream with grey mountains in the distance and muted coloured trees at their bases. I have one hand on the wheel of the car Yelena and I just bought together, a sleek black Fiesta, and the other on my partner in crime's thigh. She has her window rolled down, the high speed we're going at blowing her golden hair everywhere. I drum my fingertips along the wheel as an upbeat song starts to play.
She's lost in the clouds, I can tell. I ask her if she's imagining pictures out of the white puffs, but either the roaring wind at one ear or the song at her other is blocking her from hearing my words.
I squeeze her thigh. She smacks my hand and glances sideways at me, mossy green eyes playful. I allow myself a single glance before looking back at the road. "I asked what you're seeing in the clouds."
She turns the radio dial down. "What?"
I snort. "Nevermind."
"You wanted attention?"
I flip her the bird, earning a boisterous laugh from her. "You were!"
I mimic her accent in a high-pitched voice. "You were totally like, give me attention! Because I'm Yelena Belova and I'm so special!"
"I don't sound like that," she objects. "You once said, and I quote, 'your voice is deep and sexy, like if a dressage horse could speak.'"
I frown. "I don't remember that. Was I drunk?"
"You were trying to outdrink me."
"Oh. Were you cheating? I don't black out that easily."
"No, I wasn't. And yes, you do."
I grumble and turn the radio up again. She hums along to the song, Snap Out Of It by the Arctic Monkeys. We drive until the sun goes down, or at least until I notice her energetic nature die down like a used battery. I search up the nearest motel on my phone and by the time I've pulled in, she's asleep.
I switch the engine off and relax into my seat. I allow myself a few seconds to admire the girl beside me.
I met her through a friend of mine, who lived in the apartment beside hers. I'd visit frequently, and she noticed and eventually grew tired of me oggling her everytime I passed her on the way out. So she coerced me into drinking too much red wine and then sent me over to her door, drunk and giggling.
I didn't know much about her past. She's from Russia, and she sometimes jokes that she's actually a trained assassin. She grew up in a foster home, got close with a girl named Natalia, who ended up living in the Big Apple as a high school teacher with a husband who renovates houses. She calls her every other week before bed, I think, when I spend the night and she thinks I'm asleep. I never hear what they're saying, but I enjoy falling into slumber listening to the soft hum of her voice through the plaster walls.
I admire her small, round, button nose, the even slope of her jawline, her long lashes that brush against her subtly tanned skin. We've only been dating for two months, but I'm positive I'm im love with her. We haven't exchanged those words yet, though. The car is actually our first and only big step.
I gently shake her shoulders to wake her up, and she grumbles sleepily as she shifts and peeks up at me. "Where are we?"
"Motel. Didn't feel like driving home. Come on, lazy bones, let's get you a pillow."
Once we're settled in a room, stripped of jeans and bras so we're just wearing shirts and underwear, I drift off with my head on her shoulder and my hand wrapped around her stomach.
When I wake up, the first thing I notice is the dried drool in the corner of my mouth. I don't think much of it other than the teasing I'd endure in the morning when Yelena finds out I drooled on her.
I pull her closer and then frown.
I am holding a pillow.
My girlfriend is not said pillow.
I rub my eyes and sit up. It's still dark outside, and the clock on my phone reads three in the morning. I scan the room for her figure, but I can't see her silhouette lingering in any of the shadowed corners. I frown and push the duvet off of my body, shivering slightly as I maneuver around the bed and into the bathroom.
No sign of her.
I'm starting to get worried.
Quickly, I grab my jeans — at least I think they're mine — and force my legs through them. I slip my phone in my pocket and head to the door.
It's locked, which doesn't make sense, because my current assumption that Yelena had gone out for a quick smoke would mean that she wouldn't have gone far enough to warrant locking the door.
I swallow down the bad feeling in my gut and step outside.
The upper wrap-a-round level of the motel showed no people in sight. I head to the stairs and down to the front desk, where a young man with purple streaks in his hair sits, droopy-eyed and scrolling mindlessly through his phone.
"Um, excuse me, sir?" I ask tentatively, rubbing the goosebumps off my arms. I hadn't brought my jacket.
His eyes flick up to meet mine. "Sir? You're friendlier than your girlfriend."
"I'm assuming you mean the blonde, very pretty, homicidal-looking woman I came in with?"
He sighs, turning his phone down. "Look, this is a motel. Things like this happen a lot. My advice is to run before the wife sees you."
I stare at him blankly.
He stares back.
"Uh, what?"
"A tall redheaded woman came by, stole your girl for a talk. They were squabbling about you. I assumed . . . oh. You didn't know. Well, who knows, could be a relative or something."
My heart hammers against my ribcage wildly. I have to keep reminding myself that Yelena loves me, that she wouldn't cheat on me, or cheat on anyone else with me, or . . . I feel myself becoming pale. Her scars, I'd never thought much of them, but with her mysterious past, and this mysterious paramour? She was running away from the woman who had now found her.
"Where did they go?" I demand, anger rushing through my veins.
He shakes his head, looking sympathetic. "I've seen this play out before, trust me when I say you don't want to confront—"
"Tell me where they went or I will make you swallow your own fist."
He recoils. "Christ, fine, they're in the parking lot. For the record, I hope you get a good slappin'!"
I speed walk out of the motel and around the back, adrenaline rushing. I stop when I spot two figures under a streetlight by my car, one taller and waving her arms around as she speaks and the other, unmistakably my Yelena, glaring up with her arms crossed.
I march over to them. Their heads snap in my direction almost immediately. The redheaded woman pulls out a gun and aims it at me.
I yelp and freeze, hands up in surrender. Yelena yells something in Russian and smacks the weapon out of her hands before rushing towards me. "(Y/N), what are you doing?"
"We're leaving," I say, completely freaked out. "Right now. You run, tell the guy in the office to call 911. I'll fight her off."
"What? No! (Y/N), this is my sister! She's just paranoid."
I gape at her. "I thought she was a science teacher!"
"I told you we should have met somewhere else," the redhead hisses.
Yelena spits back in Russian.
"No, no Russian! Explanation, now!" I turn to the woman. "You're Natalia?"
"Natasha."
"Okay, Natasha the science teacher who owns a gun, what are you doing here?"
Her lips tighten into a fine line. "I'm not a science teacher, I'm an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I wasn't expecting Yelena to have company when I came here to drag her back home."
Yelena starts spurting more angry Russian words that mean nothing to me as I try to process what's happening. The two sisters argue for a solid two minutes while I decide I must be dreaming.
The lies. The scars. The mystery. The jokes about being an assassin.
This is a living nightmare.
I turn and walk away.
Yelena calls out, "(Y/N)! Wait!"
I don't stop until I've reached our room, where I promptly grab my jacket and bra and shove them in my bag.
"(Y/N), don't leave," Yelena begs when she catches up, blocking the doorway with her body. "Let me explain, love, please."
"Get out of my way," I snap.
She doesn't flinch, doesn't turn around as she closes the door and backs up against it as if to provide another barrier between me and the world she's trying to hide.
"Yelena," I warn.
"Let me explain," she pleads.
I stare her down, but she doesn't seem to be budging any time soon. I drop my bag on the floor and sit on the bed with my arms crossed, glaring at her. "Fine. Enlighten me."
She slowly eases away from the door. "I didn't lie to you about everything. I'm one hundred percent Russian, and I consider Natalia to be my sister, and we did grow up together. But we were trained together, too. As assassins."
"Fuck," I mutter.
She kneels down in front of me. "I got away from that life, I swear. And I met you and everything after that was the realist thing I'd ever had. I really love video games, and I really love your pancakes, and I really, really love you."
My glare softens.
"Even if you can't cook," she says.
I give her a semi-playful, semi-annoyed shove.
"You said be honest, don't hit me!"
I stand up and pace the room nervously. This time, she sits down on the bed. I mutter under my breath, gnawing on my thumbnail, until, finally, I sit down beside her.
"Okay, deal breaker. Do you know Captain America?"

Second Legacy postgame
Chloe answered the door despite Nadine’s sharp intake of breath from the couch, the sudden silence of the guitar strings.
“Chloe wait--”
Worries about everything, still, Chloe had been thinking. It took her a moment to recognize the man she opened the door to, and by then, Loyiso Ross had walked past her.
What did he see, looking at his daughter? Covered in bandages on the couch, holding her Fender, a pale ten-year-old with stuck-out ears perched beside her?
“You have been avoiding my calls,” he said quietly, jabbing a finger at her.
Nadine’s gaze swept to Chloe in annoyance, and then back to her father. “Haven’t much to say.”
“Ja?” Loyiso folded his arms, jerking his head at Fyodor. “Who’s he?”
“He’s our family now.”
Chloe had said it brightly as she shut the door, her heart pounding. Nadine hadn’t stood up, hadn’t even set her guitar to lean beside the armrest. She was still holding the pick.
Looking absolute daggers at her father.
“Go on, introduce yourself, Fyodor,” Chloe said, acting as natural as possible as she sank back to her spot on his other side. “We’ve been practicing, yeah?”
“Ja,” the boy enunciated carefully. “My...eema..”
“Name,” Nadine said.
“...Name is Fyodor.”
“You’re Russian,” Loyiso muttered. He held out his hand, to Chloe’s surprise, and shook the boy’s.
“Da--yes.”
“Good job, Fyodor! Told you it’ll get easier,” Chloe said, putting an arm around him in both celebration and protectiveness. “We were just working on his English now. He’s a quick study. Takes after his big sister.”
“I...love my sistra,” Fyodor said.
“I know,” Nadine said. The pick slid over a string, letting out a single note. “I love you, too.”
A scoff-laugh escaped Loyiso, and Chloe looked up in some alarm. The man had crouched down so he was at their height, and she wished she could have convinced Nadine to start looking for bigger apartments, more space for seating. Her father laughed like she did.
“You have many things to tell me, Nadi.”
Nadine mirrored the scoff right back at him. “I’ve been busy.”
“Ja? Where have you been? When did you get back? Why did you go to Gaborone but not come to me?”
Yes, he was asking why they’d visited Nadine’s mother. Chloe wondered how he’d even found out, but then, it wasn’t like Keletso had been sworn to secrecy. It was just that they’d told her everything.
Maybe one of the birds she’d again rescued from the side of the road and made a nest of old shirts for in a plastic tub had overheard, healed itself, flown back to Johannesburg in record time and told her husband all about their daughter almost dying near the Arctic circle. About Nadine falling off the glacier and rolling unconscious into a snowbank where Fyodor had found her, dragged her back to his fire, and tended to her frostbite. Chloe wasn’t even sure Nadine’s mother had believed them.
Keletso had glanced, with something of Nadine’s skeptism in her eyes, at the boy as he wolfed down his phaphatha, and then back at her daughter. But Nadine’s Tswana had become more and more impassioned as she continued. Her mother had eventually put her hand on top of Nadine’s and announced, “That is very fine, Nadi. I didn’t expect you to bring me a grandchild this way, but all the same, it is very fine.”
Chloe had exchanged a look with Nadine and let out a nervous laugh, as Keletso came around the table and ruffled Fyodor’s hair. “You...did tell her he calls you his sister, right?”
“I don’t think my parents understand adopting a brother.”
“Oh you’re going to tell him?”
Nadine looked up from her dikgobe. “I...you mean--”
“Yeah I thought you just implied--”
“I implied jack shit, Frazer.”
“For crying out loud, he lives in the next neighborhood, doesn’t he? How is he not going to find out?”
“I do not think he would be interested.”
Chloe had said, carefully, reaching over the boy and squeezing Nadine’s bicep, “You want to keep him away from Fyodor, don’t you.”
“I just don’t think he wants to ever be near a soldier again.”
And now Chloe, watching Nadine’s eyes nearly burn a hole in her father, interrupted in teaching her new brother the lyrics to K’NAAN’s “Wavin’ Flag”, wondered if she felt the same way.
“Your mother was happy you visited her,” Loyiso said.
“I’m glad.”
“Nadi, please. She said you are smiling more. That she is happy you are happy. But you never even told me anything.”
“I’m done with Shoreline.”
Chloe swallowed hard, feeling the room’s temperature drop a few degrees. Nadine would never have said that to her father a few weeks ago. She’d had trouble looking him in the eye.
Why did Nadine’s sensibilities always swing between the extremes of being too careful and not giving a fuck?
“I did not come here,” Loyiso said, “to talk about Shoreline. And for that matter, Shoreline was done with you a long time ago.”
The soft thunk and twang of the guitar as Nadine slipped it behind her couch, standing up. Chloe put a hand on her arm, knowing Nadine would shrug it off. To her surprise, not only did it stay there, but Fyodor’s little hand joined it.
“We saved him from a mercenary unit. Their commander knew you,” Nadine said, getting into her unmoving father’s face, gritting her teeth as she motioned at Fyodor with a shoulder. “He said you helped him, you supplied each other’s units. Artem Laskin. He was a real--”
“You think I agree with everyone I work with?” Loyiso motioned at Chloe. “Your business partner. You agree with her on everything?”
Chloe saw Fyodor’s arms closing around her partner’s waist as he made to hide behind her, Nadine’s fists tightening, and frowned.
“Mr. Ross, I’m the one who agrees with her.”
Both Nadine and her father looked at her, blinking, and she stepped over to him.
“And,” Chloe took a deep breath and let it out, “Fyodor’s your new son, so you may as well get to know him.”
Nadine was shaking her head in Chloe’s peripheral vision, glaring at her, but Chloe didn’t break contact with Loyiso’s eyes.
“He’s not much for fighting, soldiers, anything like that. It’s a nice break, isn’t it? Having a kid you don’t put all that on.”
This is where he calls Fyodor weak, Chloe thought. And Nadine breaks something. This is where he says she should be grateful for what he’s done for her, for how he’s made her strong. And I’ll say she is--
“Does he know how to play chess?”
Loyiso crouched down again, looking at Fyodor, who was half-hidden behind his daughter.
“Shahkmati,” the boy said.
“Da,” Loyiso said. “Moishem igrat shahkmati,” he looked up at Nadine with a wry smile. “Nadi, you always thought it was a stupid game.”
“It is,” Nadine said, as Fyodor stepped out from behind her. “Soccer, that was my game. Still is.”
But there was a softness to her words.
Chloe almost fainted from letting out the breath she was holding, and felt Nadine’s hand on her lower back as she passed her. She turned to see Nadine taking a big, flat box from a high shelf.
“Improvising,” Chloe murmured as Nadine handed the checkered, hinged box to her.
“No,” Nadine said. “You’ve had it planned for weeks.”
“I’ve had it planned for weeks.”
“Selfish dickhead.”
“Love you too.”

I hope she will not regret asking, because—brace yourselves—I am 98% nautical-themed niche by volume, and I will pounce like a pistol shrimp on every chance to infodump! If anyone fancies frothing at the mouth about nuclear SLCMs or New START or whatever, I encourage you to visit my Twitter—I'm not very active there but it's peak esoteric. I've also tacked on some "Ask Me Abouts" in case anyone wants even more specific infodumping! 1. Weapons proliferation, international collective security, and arms control agreements. I.E. missiles, missiles, and more missiles—except ideally, fewer missiles. Also the history of 19th and early 20th century naval arms races and treaties—especially the 1921-22 International Conference on Naval Limitation and how it affected ship design. Contemporary arms-racing behaviour with regard to anti-ballistic missile systems, anti-ship ballistic missile systems, artificial intelligence, and hypersonic weapons. Autonomous nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed cruise missiles and torpedoes (I hate them, thanks!). Cruise missile proliferation is of particular concern as it tends to fly under the radar (I know I know, bad joke). Ask me about strategic ambiguity, nuclear posture, and why "escalate to deescalate" is a fever dream of western analysts and not actual Russian doctrine!
2. Open-source intelligence and geolocation. Adding to this the buzzwords "citizen science", "crowdsourcing", "hiveminding" etc. (deceptive terms—the "crowd" is increasingly atomized and unrepresentative). I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole a few years back where I spent a lot of time on Google Earth, wikimapia.org, marinetraffic.com and flightradar24.com watching areas of interest, and assisting some patriotic Taiwanese in locating PLA rockets and radars across the Strait using historical satellite imagery and other sources. Ask me about Strava Heatmap, or the Red Bird Express!
3. Military applications of electromagnetic and acoustic waves in the maritime domain, including: the early history of naval radio communications and signals intelligence (SIGINT); the effects of sonar on marine mammals; the military use of marine mammals to detect mines using biosonar; LIDAR seabed mapping; ELF and VLF radio waves as a means for communicating with submarines at sea; high-frequency direction-finding using circularly-disposed antenna arrays or CDAA (one of the last two AN/FRD-10s in operation is in nearby Gander, Newfoundland!); but especially the history of the Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS), still extant in a reduced capacity called the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS). Ask me about Soviet submarine shenanigans on the eastern seaboard!
4. Civil Wars in media and memory. And here I count the American Revolution and the War of 1812 as a kind of 3rd and 4th English Civil War transplanted to the New World. I'm fascinated by the political dimensions of Civil War reenactment, particularly in the United States but also English and Russian Civil War reenactors. Ask me why I loathe the "Lost Cause" mythology!
5. Old English, Old Norse, and Medieval Icelandic prose and poetry. I loved Old English in university and even thought about taking a Masters in Medieval Icelandic at Reykjavik University (my grades weren't good enough). Ask me about Grendel's mom and monstrous femininity in Germanic lore!
6. The environmental and ecological history of warfare. The lasting scars of conflict on terrestrial and human geography: craters; minefields; cemeteries; demographics, etc. How "an army marches on its stomach" and its fighting capacity waxes and wanes with the produce of the land. Ask me about Abandoned Military Installations of Canada!
7. Civil-military relations and the history of military coups and revolutionary naval mutinies. I'm especially interested in the intersection of civilian academia with professional military education, and the public outreach of institutions such as the Royal Military College of Canada, US Naval War College, US Naval Postgraduate School, and the Office of Naval Research. Ask me about US vs Canadian Officers' Oaths, or the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny of 1946!
8. Fin-de-siècle music hall performers, drag kings and queens, circus strongwomen, and bearded ladies. Also, historical ideals of feminine and masculine beauty, gender roles, and the modern history of fashion design in western Europe. Corsets and stays, crinoline, stockings, etc. The fetishization of various body types and parts over time and across cultures. Um, there's a lot to unpack here. Ask me why I have Mixed Feelings about Eugen Sandow!
9. Canadian maritime territorial and economic disputes: Arctic sovereignty and the northwest passage; The 'Turbot War' between Canada and Spain; the Hans Island dispute between Canada and Denmark. Ask me why that last one is Really Dumb!
10. Reading and writing fanfiction. This is a new one! There's so much great stuff out there, and it's been a good way to test the waters of fictive prose using ready-made characters and settings. Just the Dragon Age series so far—I’m such a romantic slut for these characters—but I’d like to branch out into some Good Omens or maybe even indulge some nostalgic TNG daydreams. Hi! I have seen your answer on name requests, and holy Force, it's gorgeous, and it's definitely what I need! I don't feel comfortable with my given name - I haven't been realising that before I started noticing that it's literally unpronounceable for non-Russian people. But then I realized that I am not satisfied with my name even on a deeper level - it's too soft, too femine, too connected to a particular culture which is not actually relatable for me. That's why I started using other names when I could to, but I haven't found one I would be satisfied with. I even invented my own name using some Icelandic words, but it is still not perfect one. I hope you can help me.
If it's important, I am a Huffledor, non-binary (ambigender, it's a subtype of bigender which is feeled as a stable fusion of equally strong female and male parts) so I would prefer a neutral name, or rough/brutal female name. I also like names which sound like alien names, especially those that have apostrophe in it. If it would have Scandinavian origin but still sound alien, it is a perfect option!
About my vibe... Okay, for Star Trek roleplay, I always take a half-Vulcan half-Romulan OC, because it's the most clear metaphor of who I am - emotional and compassionate as a Romulan, but logical and socially awkward as a Vulcan. I am constantly torn between my head and my heart, and never able to choose one side over another, even if it sucks sometimes. I am seen by my friend as "this nerdy crazy freak who loves quantum physics and feeding pigeons, but better not take their belongings if you want to survive today, because they are a bit of Hulk".
My aesthetics: pastel-to-vibrant rainbow, loud happy music, laughter, snowy mountains, arctic seas, Norse mythology, coming home after a faraway journey, sailing vessels, birds and bird wings, flight, untouched nature, Christmas in a small town, hi-tech, outer space mission, spaceships, balance between nature and advanced technologies, massive cold weapons like hammers and battle-axes, the Space Viking/Space Cowboy, the Beastmaster.

Despite 2020 being a shitshow so far, what’s one good thing that’s happened to you this year? I got to finish the end of the Murderbot Diaries and I am now content XD

What is your biggest irrational fear and why? Falling backward from a high place. Not heights, but specifically falling backward. I climb trees a lot but I can never sit down on a branch because I feel too unsteady and it can paralyze me so I’m stuck in the tree till I can calm tf down lmao

Nesting Site [Bucky x Reader]: 2
Summary: What happens when birds no longer sing? When a wall is put up so high, the light no longer shows? When the only way it can crumble is when someone has to die?
Warnings/Themes: Angst, fluff, humor, profanity, blood/mild gore, character death, drugs/being drugged, mutual-pining hidden by hotheaded denial, Self-destructive behavior, implications of depression/PTSD.

The most important thing to Bucky Barnes is control.
Control of his sight, his words, his actions.
Control of himself.
That control that he regained years ago was suddenly snatched from him, white-hot rage overtaking and stuffing it into a box. It was like he was the Winter Soldier again, seeing out through glass panes while unable to consciously stop himself from his own movements.
He can feel it too. Feel his knuckles crack against the skull of an enemy as he sucker-punches them. Feel his eyes water and burn. Feel his throat close. Feel the walls caving in. Feel himself losing.
He doesn’t know how many enemies he’s taken down, nor does he know how many are left. His eyes remain on you and solely on you.
“Buck, what’s going on?!” Steve shouts through the earpiece. “I’ve lost eyes on --”
He screams in anger, but there aren’t any coherent words. Bucky’s fist collides with another agent, stealing their pistol and embedding bullets in anyone in his way, but he knows he’s getting outnumbered way too quickly.
Yet again, he couldn’t care less.
They shot you. They killed you.
He was gonna tear this organization apart from the bottom-up.
“We’re coming in as backup. There’s too many, you need to get out now!” Sam warns.
“Not without her!”
Time slows and Bucky can only register a few things with his muddled mind.
One.
Silver wings fly by in a blur as Sam crashes into a soldier. He breaks up the huddle, standing side-by-side with Bucky. With a quick glance, the silver-suited man sees that you, his friend, are face down in your own pool of blood.
Anger is shared between both Bucky and Sam.
Two.
Your body is thoughtlessly dragged back by one of the enemies. They bark orders in Russian.
‘Retreat and Recoup.’
Bucky’s blocked by a barricade of soldiers, and he feels utterly helpless as he watches.
Your head lolls forward, face no longer visible. Sticky red streaks are left behind as your body moves across the ground.
Three.
He feels someone shove him back by the shoulders. Steve’s blue eyes come into view as he yells something. Bucky can’t hear him, not until he slaps him across the face.
“Listen to me, Buck. We need to go. Now.”
“Not without --”
His voice dies in his throat as Steve practically manhandles him out the door, Sam covering both of them.
The ride back is uncomfortably silent.

A calloused hand comes up to rub his tired eyes.
It’s cold in his bathroom. Cold in his room. Still, he keeps it this way. The freezer-box chill helps calm his heated nightmares.
He kept seeing you. Kept seeing you get shot. Kept seeing you cry. Kept seeing you get pulled away from him.
Bucky has learned to live with his nightmares, but these were just the worst. He couldn’t shake them off, couldn’t move on. He doesn’t know if he wants to either.
It's been 4 days.
He's infiltrated any base of theirs he could find, but you weren't in sight. For a ghost that shows up in his dreams often, you could never be found outside of them.
Bucky wants to convince himself that he's not giving up, yet here he was in his bathroom, splashing his face in arctic-temperature water to wake himself up from this dreadful life.
He wonders if this was his fault. He was distracted for a second and didn’t keep tabs on every guard.
He sighs, gripping onto the bathroom sink, the porcelain cracking under his superhuman strength.
You wouldn’t blame him, and you wouldn’t want him blaming himself. The situation couldn’t have been helped.
“Deep breaths,” he mumbles to himself. “Breathe.”
He throws water on his face again, screwing his eyes shut and appreciating the cold sting.
Wake up.
When he opens his eyes, he sees his reflection in the mirror. Rosey cheeks, chapped lips with a split in the middle from an earlier mission, and eyes full of hopelessness.
Wake the fuck up.
He wants to scream again. He wants to climb onto the roof and shout for you, tell you that he misses you and that he loves you. Tell you that he's sorry for everything because he never got the chance to do so --
And then his phone rumbles against the counter. He picks it up to see a text from Nat.
Funeral arrangements. I know you don’t want to talk about it, but we need to.
He loses his control again, breath escaping shakily.
You're not dead. Please, don't be dead.
Why the fuck is everyone saying that you're dead?!
He can't believe it.
Despite the sight of your motionless body.
Despite the fact that your tracker stopped working.
Despite all of him reacting as if you were indeed dead.
Tears well in his eyes and fall, hitting the sink. He looks up at the mirror only to see a figment of his imagination.
You.
With a frustrated growl, he punches right through the mirror, the glass shattering and covering his fist in blood.

Somewhere, at a nameless location deep in the heart of Africa, your body resides.
Your body, which was breathing and moving and cursing up a storm.
“As a prisoner, fuck you. As an acquaintance, that uniform does nothing for your ass.”
Your mouth fills with blood, teeth cutting gum when a slap lands across your cheek. “Just saying,” you finish, spitting a wad of metallic red onto the ground.
You woke up the same day as when you had gotten shot. The enemy was quickly advancing with biotechnology, healing you and cutting you back open for answers. Still, you don’t budge. You promise yourself that you won’t ever.
“What the fuck is it with you and acting like a class clown?” a woman with fire-red hair asks. She looks down at you as if you were a roach. Frankly, you feel like one, sat on your knees with sweat, dirt, and blood covering you. Your wrists hurt from being bound -- Everything hurt.
You’re not sure how long you’ve been down here. Hours? Days? Months? God, you really hope it hasn’t been months. It sure feels like it. Your muscles were growing tired, no matter how many times they’ve healed you. Your eyes flutter every now and then, fighting sleep and waiting only until they leave you alone. And despite your strong demeanor, you were getting anxious.
You scoff at her, but she sees the resignation in your gaze. “You’re wasting your time. They think I’m dead.”
And then she pulls out your tracking bracelet, rolling it over in her hand and smiling. “Not for long. A buddy of mine fixed this.”
"Listen, Wendy --" her name was certainly not Wendy, but she never told you what it was so that's what you go with. Her looks certainly remind you of a braided someone that served delicious Frosties and burgers. Perhaps, you were torturing yourself at this point. “They’ll never come for me.”
“I think we both know you’ve got at least someone wrapped around your finger,” she chuckles darkly. “That charming attitude of yours must’ve nabbed someone during your time there. Someone we want.”
Your heart hammers in your chest, eyes growing wide and breathing getting shallow.
She knows.
She knows.
Your facade falters, fingers visibly trembling in rage. “He’s stronger than you. Untouchable,” you growl.
“And you’re not.” She rolls the dial on the side of the bracelet, pressing a few buttons until it beeps. A red light blinks twice in confirmation. A signal is sent to Stark, and your fear skyrockets.
The Avengers were strong, but the thought of any of them getting hurt because of you made you sick to your stomach.
Most importantly, you would never forgive yourself if Bucky was captured again by a terrorist group. You would risk your life to keep him safe. You've done it once already, you'll do it again.
Because Bucky was your everything.
He may not have acknowledged you much throughout your time with the Avengers, but when he did, he always looked out for you. Always had your back.
You were a poor freelancing assassin from a small town in Oklahoma. You couldn't relate to anyone at the tower, but Bucky made sure you were welcome nonetheless. He trained you, showed you the ropes, stayed up with you at night when you were having nightmares of past missions.
Something changed between the both of you one day. For better or for worse, you're not quite sure. It was the day you'd been lounging with him on the couch, watching scary movies until the asscrack of dawn. You weren't paying attention and neither was he, too lost in the way the other breathed or moved. And then he asked you a simple question.
Do you think this place could be home?
You remember smiling at him and answering without missing a beat.
With you here, it definitely feels that way.
After that night you saw something in his eyes every time he glanced your way. A tiny spark of endearment hidden between guarded faces. You've never seen him give anyone that look. Sure, he's shown affection towards Nat and Steve, but he gave you a tiny glimmer reserved for one person and one person only. You were chipping away at him.
That's why, you'd protect him from anyone, especially this bitch.
When she steps into reach, you sweep a leg out, sending her onto her ass. You use your foot, stepping onto the tracker and scooting it back over to you. You had to send a warning signal.
Before you can do so, the woman grunts in annoyance, standing and kicking it away from you. “Fucking bitch. You’re so stupid.”
She wastes no time, snatching a sledgehammer off the table and slamming it down. It collides with a deafening thump.
You’ve broken bones before, considering how many missions you’ve been on. You’ve yet to crush anything.
Until now.
The pain is immeasurable, shooting up your leg and shocking your entire being. It burns, it stings, it breaks you. Your leg is pinned down, immobile even without the weight of the hammer.
“Fix her up, have a little fun with her before they come,” your assaulter spits, throwing the bloodied weapon over to the side. “I don’t give a shit what happens to her now.”
You’re hauled to your feet, the pressure on your injured leg causing you to immediately topple over when they let go. They do it a few more times on purpose, egging you on and yelling at you when you don’t walk. When they get bored, they finally drag you to the healing machine.
And the cycle continues.

“Get some food in your system,” Sam orders, tidying up Bucky’s desk.
Bucky doesn’t miss a beat. “No.”
It’s been 2 weeks. Two long-ass weeks and he’s fucking exhausted. He knows that if you were here, you’d shame him for becoming a slob and sulking like this, but you’re not here.
“You’re gonna need it.”
“What the fuck for?”
Sam’s lips press together in a frown. He’s used to Bucky speaking sharply. Ever since losing you, the man’s been short-tempered, self-destructive, and reclusive.
“We found where they’re keeping her. Tony managed to pick up her signal.”
“Where they’re keeping her body --” Bucky corrects, the words tasting bitter in his mouth.
Sam tiredly slaps the files against the desk, the abrupt noise causing Bucky to jump. “She’s alive,” he snaps. “Barely.” When he sees Bucky’s eyes light up just a fraction, he points to the door. “She’s gonna be dead if you don’t get your ass up, get some food in your system, and join me on the jet in ten.”
Bucky stumbles to his feet, swiping his gun out of his dresser and rushing out the door. Sam barely registers it until Bucky’s shouting down the hall.
“Make it zero. We’re leaving now. I’ll eat something on the jet.”

These people have broken you down to your very last atom and have built you back up just to do it all over again.
Memories. Sweet, sweet memories have turned into hellish hallucinations.
You remember it the first time, taking the situation and blaming it on starvation. Yet, you know they’ve slipped something into the dubious slop they fed you. That, or they injected it directly into your veins. You don’t know what they’ve done to you at this point. You don’t know what’s real, what’s fake.
You’ve seen Bucky more often than not when under these dizzy spells.
“Bluebird, copy?”
You choke on your blood, gazing up through hooded eyes from your chained position against the wall.
He’s here. He’s here and he’s come to rescue you. You knew it would be him. You knew he cared. You knew.
“Roger that, Bucky,” you laugh tearfully. You smile then, genuinely. Smile so wide that the skin around your eyes wrinkle and the tears of fear become tears of joy. “I missed you.”
“I missed you more, I told you to be more careful,” he grins. His hair is freshly conditioned and you wonder if, when you get out of here, would he let you run your hands through it in comfort? He seems to answer the silent question with warm eyes. “Ready to come home?”
“So fuckin ready.” You sob, shaking your head. “I’m so sorry, I failed the mission.”
His eyes harden, head tilted ever so slightly to the right as he speaks in a foreign voice. He regards your expression, confused and fallen. “And it could’ve costed my life, thanks to you.”
And then you’re drowning. Choking on ice-cold water and woken out of your daze. No longer is Bucky in front of you, it’s this red-headed monster with a hose in her hand.
“Rise and shine,” she teases.
At that moment, the realization comes crashing down on you.
You’re not getting out.
You’re gonna lose your fucking mind down here.
And then you’re gonna starve to death, rot away, and be buried in an unmarked grave somewhere or burned to ashes.
Forgotten by Bucky.
Forgotten by your family.
Forgotten by the world.

Another day, another spoonful of disgusting mush forced down your throat.
You had a strange mix of feelings in your gut: a bit of happiness that the Avengers were headed your way, a bit of nervousness that they won’t find you. Amongst those emotions were pure fear.
Fear that they’ll get Bucky. Fear that he’ll blame you for this mission going haywire and causing a ruckus. Fear that when they reach you, you’ll be dead.
You try your best to keep the ‘food’ in, despite your body arguing against it. Whatever it was, it was the only thing providing you what little energy you have left. When you get out of here, if you get out of here, the first thing you’re going to do is eat a heaping plate of pancakes or french toast, maybe the whole pantry.
The sound of sirens breaks through the silence. The room turns red as lights flash in a warning.
You can hear the rush of guards, the shouting and gunshots.
And you sigh in relief.
When the door bursts open and Bucky steps in, however, you freeze.
He’s here.
He’s not here.
No, this is really him.
Another trick.
“Bluebird,” he croaks, clearly having cried these past few weeks. “I thought they --”
“Get out,” you mutter coldly. He takes a step forward in confusion and you push yourself back to press against the wall. You’ve held a strong front this entire time, but you don’t think you can handle another trick of theirs. You allow your mask to slip. Your body reacts against your will.
“Hey, it’s okay. You’re safe,” he reassures, taking another step.
You’re conflicted, torn between believing him and shutting down. “Please,” you beg.
He pauses.
“P-please, I’m tired. Please just stop,” you cry. “I’m not gonna tell you anything. Just fucking kill me.”
Bucky knows better than to jostle a person in shock, but his emotions overtake him right there. Within seconds, he has his arms wrapped around you, gentle enough as to not disturb any wounds, but strong enough to give assurance.
“C’mon, Darlin’,” he mumbles. “We’re getting out of here okay? I’m getting you out of here.”
You breathe in, recognizing the scent of his shampoo. With his arms wrapped around you, you get confirmation that he is here. He’s here for real this time.
And although you had cried your eyes out before, sure that you’ve run out of tears, fat, salty droplets roll down your cheeks.
The sound of a whimper nearly breaks his damn heart.
“Bucky?” you whisper shakily.
“Yeah, Doll?”
“I wanna go home.”

2019 & 2010s Best/Worst
Because I like lists and cataloguing the dumb shit I cared about. As my brother once said after seeing and reviewing NOW YOU SEE ME on a lazy Sunday, ‘Some would say it was a waste of time, others might say it was a colossal waste of time.’
I’ll admit, it’s a bit over-the-top. Particularly including the Pats, but yeah, in the Tom Brady era that started when I was 14 as a Freshman in high school to 33 years old now and wrapping up soon-ish (?), there’s not a chance in hell I’ll care as intimately about this shit. I grew up with it at just the right time.

TV Tropes: Alaska
Acting Your Intellectual Age: He has the looks of a first-grader but the mind of a seasoned mountaineer and has no interest in connecting with children that look his age. However, this could just be because he has no interest in connecting with anyone outside his ‘pack’ after what happened last time.
Adorkable: Has his moments, such as when he’s gushing about dogs. He really loves dogs.
The Alcoholic: Being Alaska, Alaska has a love for the sauce, especially salmon vodka. This usually leads him to pass out by the end.
Animal Motif: Dogs and wolves obviously. Specifically Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies for the former and Arctic Wolves for the latter.
Badass Bookworm: Loves to read but is a natural survivalist and gunslinger.
Berserk Button: For your safety, do not mention Russia or Texas within ten feet of him. Also, don’t call him small.
Big Brother Instinct: To Hawaii and by extension the other states if they are threatened as he does genuinely care about all of them even if they do think he’s rather odd.
Big Brother Mentor: Also to Hawaii by sharing his experiences to teach her that the world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. She, however, hasn’t taken on his nihilism and still believes in the best in people.
Big Eater: Given that he smokes marijuana, is a state, and is stress eater this is no big shocker.
Blue-and-Orange Morality: Being raised by wolves, Alaska has a mindset closer to animals than humans. For one Alaska, cares nothing for morality besides protecting his ‘pack’ (America and the other states) and judges things like disloyalty and irresponsibility far more harshly than someone being outright malicious. He also thinks that politicians need to start fighting to the death for their position. Literally. (This also could just be because he just hates politicians since they often lie to gain people’s favor)
Broken Bird: After so many years of tragedy and isolation, Alaska is understandably rather cynical.
Break the Cutie: See ‘Dark and Troubled Past’.
Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: A platonic version but he is the brooding boy to Hawaii’s gentle girl.
Brutal Honesty: Everyone agrees that Alaska is probably the most honest of the states, however, his honesty is usually extremely impolite to which he just says ‘I say the truth, it’s their fault if they can’t accept’.
Byronic Hero: Alaska is snarky, stoic, stubborn, excessively cynical but is passionate about his beliefs and has a soft spot for the environment and its creatures.
Celibate Hero: While not asexual, he has little interest in ever having sex and it’s not just because he looks six.
Color Motif: White and gray.
Comically Serious: He does not understand jokes so he will often take these at face value.
Crazy-Prepared: Winter’s in his state are intense, so he leaves nothing to chance.
Dark and Troubled Past: Imagine being locked into the form of a baby, abandoned by the people who were supposed to love and protect you, find a new family in wolves only for them to be killed leaving you to survive on your own while looking a like a toddler. When you finally found someone they also die leaving you to want to curl up and die and then be adopted again but seen as odd by your adopted siblings. Yeah, Alaska having depression and anxiety makes a lot of sense.
Deadpan Snarker: Usually this, especially when at states meeting or when he’s answering asks.
Defrosting Ice Queen: Alaska is not an easy person to get along with and can be extremely rude and sarcastic especially to ask blogs that star Texas, however, it is possible for him to warm up to some people outside his family like Dave (@alaska-ask-blog-aph) or at the very least learns the ability to bite his tongue.
Emotionless Boy: Most of the time, he is extremely stoic due to the fact that when he does express emotion, he can come off as rather intense.
Everyone Has Standards: He has a strange morality, however he is openly disgusted by ‘people’ who would rip away children’s innocence.
Foil: To Hawaii. They are both disconnected states and the child of a Native mother and Caucasian parent with trauma happening to them at very young ages which caused them to act the way they do, with Alaska being very stern and no-nonsense while Hawaii is energetic and enjoys making people smile.
Friendless Background: Because of his inability to relate to children his physical age and his autism causing him panic attacks whenever he is in close proximity to others, he has very few friends other than Hawaii.
Friend to All Children: Zigzagged. He doesn’t connect with older children very well but he does have a soft spot for toddlers and babies and even makes an attempt to be openly kind to them. He also considers the worst people the ones who would purposefully steal their innocence and wouldn’t hesitate to pull his gun on such people.
Friend to All Living Things: Hey, I said humans, I never said anything about animals but yes he does love animals particularly dogs, wolves, and eagles.
Good is Not Nice: Not nice is an understatement. He has a strange moral code, is rather rude to new people, and mainly keeps to himself but if someone dares and tries to hurt his little sister or anyone in his family, they better start running.
Guilt Complex: Blames himself for what happened to his crush.
Hates Being Touched: The only one who he will willingly let touch him, much less hug him, is Hawaii. Other than not, hands-off.
Hates Their Parent: Openly refers to Russia as ‘a sperm donor’. And that’s when he’s being nice.
The Hermit: Lives like this whenever he’s at home in his state.
Hidden Depths:
Instead of hockey as one would think, he enjoys figure skating and is actually pretty good.
Not shown on the blog, yet but he actually enjoys the company of toddlers like Nunavut as they are far less complicated than people who are older.
He also enjoys writing and even creates stories in his free time. He also uses it along with his personal journal as a form of therapy for himself.
Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Brother/Sister version. Alaska is the huge guy to Hawaii’s tiny girl, especially once they’re older where he’ll be at 5′11 to 6′0 to Hawaii’s 5′3. Justified as Alaska is one-fifth the size of the lower 48 and is larger than Montana, California, Texas COMBINED.
Human Mom, Non-Human Dad: While his biological father is Russia, his mother was a normal Yup'ik woman named Uki.
Hypocrite: Alaska calls Russia a ‘cruel, crazy manchild’ when he openly calls for the deaths of anyone who betrays their country. He also wants Hawaii to seek help when he resists any for him.
Hypocrite has a Point: To be fair, being lenient with traitors is a recipe for disaster for this country.
Ice Queen: He’s a rather cold and rude person but still a nice guy underneath.
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Cynical, rude, stubborn are all words that would accurately describe him but also family-orientated, protective, and generous when he needs to be.
Knight in Sour Armor: He does see the world as a cold and dark and is a self-proclaimed misanthrope but still does his best to protect his family and people.
Meaningful Name: Alaska’s name Inuit name, ‘Nukilik’, means ‘strong’ and given everything, he’s gone through and still living to see today, no one can say he isn’t strong. As for his European name of ‘Peter’ meaning ‘stone’ and he is stone-faced and it’s also a nice reference to Peter the Great of Russia.
Mixed Ancestry: He’s half-Slavic, half-Inuit.
Nature Lover: Growing up most of his life in the forests of Alaska, it makes sense the woods are where he’s most comfortable especially among the animals there. He is also disgusted by hunters who hunt merely for the game and not because they need it.
Not Good with People: Type 2. My beloved grumpy boy is unsurprisingly not good with people as he can’t understand their feelings or why he offended him. However, he is good at reading the feelings of animals and emphasizes more with them.
No Social Skills: Justified due to both his upbringing. He also is very indifferent to having them at the end of the day.
Older Than They Look: Being a state this a given. However where he differs, since he was born in 1800, he’s actually older than most states but since he was basically deserted by Russia he was never given the ability to grow.
Only Sane Man: Certainly sees himself as this among the other states as he feels that they play bloated, bureaucratic politics far too much instead of working together to help their father.
The Pessimist: Alaska physically can’t bring himself to hope in the best in people since all he’s seen was the worst in people since he was young when everyone he loved just ditched him or died.
Raised by Wolves: Played completely straight. After his mother’s tribe abandoned him in the woods an Alpha She-Wolf who had just lost her pups adopted Alaska.
Socially Awkward Hero: Alaska can scale mountains, survive massive earthquakes, and survive on his own for years. However, the ability to interact with humans or even other anthropics is the hard part.
Strong Family Resemblance: Besides his dark skin, black hair, and eye shape, Alaska is basically a younger version of Russia. This has gotten him into quite a bit of trouble like when he was accused of being a communist during the McCarthy era due to his Russian heritage and Belarus has tried to kidnap him on more than one occasion.
Sugar-and-Ice Personality: In spite of cold, loner nature and dislike for society in general, Alaska at his core is a genuinely familial, protective person who just wants to take care of those he cares about. This is best showcased in his relationship with Hawaii, who might be the only person he openly gives affection to and he did go as Elsa twice just to make her happy even if it was embarrassing for him.
Trauma Conga Line: Abandoned, seen as a threat, had his pack murdered, only person he ended up caring about dying, and nearly froze to almost-death. All when he looked 2. Someone get this boy a therapists.
Used to Be a Sweet Kid: When he was young, Alaska was a sweet and gentle boy, even while living with his wolf pack. However, due to the many tragedies in his life, he has become extremely bitter and cynical towards the world.
When She Smiles: Has given a few in some comics and chats. He even admits that the main reason he loves Hawaii (as a sister) is that she is one of the few people who can make him give a genuine smile.
