#idk why i like writing in Tim's perspective so much?

Hi, I’m writing bc I have to let go some things. Firstly, I’ve followed Tim since 2017/18 so I know all the ladies before KJ but this is too much. Maybe we perceive him wrong, maybe he is a hoe for good looking girls. In our minds he’s still a kid from CMBYN but he isn’t and he never was. Therefore, I think it doesn’t matter whether he really dates KJ or not bc it says a lot about him anyway.
If he does or not it still damages what he achieved, there’s a wave of hate and nobody is taking him seriously. I don’t understand why is he doing PR? Why an actor who is well paid, plays in blockbuster movies do this kind of shit? Not enough money? Not enough fame? What he wants?
I don’t believe he’s covering his sexuality or sth (he might be queer, I’m just telling this PR isn’t for that). Either he’s really in love with her (and all the girls before) or the only things he can think of are fame, constant rush around him, making more and more movies and be “the best” in Hollywood. Just as he would like to win a race you couldn’t win bc there isn’t a race. Maybe someone should tell him that being respected and making a good art is better than simple fame? Idk, it’s just my not-amercan-LA-cantered perspective.
PS I still have a soft spot him 💜 I’m not a hater, I just wanted to add something to discussion about him.

I gladly publish your ask and I respect your thought that isn't mine. It's not his fault if we project on him our expectations. He isn't Elio and in the last wonka and dune promo he seemed to me the delightful boy he always has been obviously grown up and more guarded but it's normal. Let's wait to see

What’s your opinion of that post going around saying that Jason is a character doomed by the narrative while Tim is doomed by his own flaws? I personally disagree with it because a lot of what happens to Tim is out of his control (like his friends and parents dying), and while Jason’s death was out of his control almost everything that happens to him after becoming Red Hood is due to his own flaws and lashing out at others. I’m curious about what you think :)
ohhh interesting. Because I am simultaneously like "yeah that post is neat and I agree with it!" and "yeah you're totally right and I agree with you!" I am simply agreeable :)
Hm. I think a significant portion of why the original post strikes something true is the meta context. Jason was doomed, not because of anything about him, but because he had the misfortune to be written in an era where the main Batman writer hated the idea of the Robin. He had a lead writer who kept trying to get him killed, and finally succeeded.
On the flip side, Tim is very protected by the narrative. DC knew damn well they could not let something bad happen to this Robin right after the death of the last one, lest the concept of Robin be ruined forever. So even as terrible things happen to the people around Tim, he himself is very very safe for the first twenty years of his history, and only really could be seriously hurt after there's a new Robin.
(Also, iirc, that post labels Tim-soomed-by-flaws specifically as a Greek tragedy and like. I'm no classics expert, but I don't think being a doomed-by-flaws Greek tragedy is mutually exclusive with having shitty things out of your control also happen to you.)
It also feels most true when specifically around Jason's Robin tenures. Jason was recruited by Bruce, largely did good, and died anyway because the universe was cruel. Tim, on the flip side, very much chose to be here despite having full access to a normal, safe life.
Also. idk. Tim does have hubris struck down by the gods energy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ This is most especially true in Red Robin, and especially especially under Nicieza's writing, where he may be informed by grief but is also a guy so infuriatingly convinced of his Rightness.
Onnn the other hand: everything you've said is also totally true!
Jason is a tragedy doomed by the narrative as Robin. But while he carries some of that energy even after returning, he is very much making his own mistakes as the Red Hood. There's a lens to look at it where Jason is narratively doomed because he never got to live a real life and is now stuck being against the main character (Bruce) who will inevitably prevail. But there is also the more Watsonian lens where Jason is absolutely doomed by his own flaws and causing his own destruction when he doesn't need to!!
[eta paragraph got lost here; re-adding] Red Hood Jason does a lot of really awful things that were entirely his decision. And he faces a lot of struggles that he very much could have avoided if it weren't for his own flaws. And though Tim is flawed and never died (and arguably isn't even really a tragedy?), the terrible things that have impacted him the most--the various deaths of people he loves--were fully out of his control, and sometimes not even narratively about him! (e.g. Steph fridged for Bruce; Bruce, Conner, Bart all killed/"killed" for their own stories, etc)
In the end, I guess it's a matter of perspective. Which vibes are strongest to you.

Hate.
I have received hate for my characterization of Jason Todd in my ‘My School’s Local Mafia Boss’ AU! Again.
God, what does it take for people to freaking realize how much time and energy authors put into their work?
I’m gonna be copying and pasting some of the things I’ve said as replies from the fic here, because I think I covered everything there.
First off, why even bother reading if you hate characterization so much? People have been saying this for a long long time. Just click out.
Second, what exactly do you expect from authors once you say that you don’t like their works? Do you expect an apology? Do you expect them to change everything they’re written? Like, I’ve written two whole series on that AU, one of which has 8 works, and the other which has 6 works. And there are multiple multi-chapter fics there. Or do you want them to give some hate back at you for some weird thirst for attention? Cuz believe it or not, that has happened.
You got three options, dear reader and commenter:
a) Don’t read. I guarantee that the authors don’t want you reading it anyway.
b) Use that amazing ability of yours to form words for a more superbar reason, like, oh I don’t know, commenting on the fics you do like
c) Write your own freaking fic, but leave other authors out of it
I have said, time and time again that this is, literally, fiction. It’s— oh come on! It’s legit in the word. Fanfiction. Characterizations vary with different people and it is that variousness that makes a fandom. It’s that difference of ideas and perspectives that makes the whole community beautiful. But when that difference is forced upon another difference, it just ruins the beauty of fandom.
For the people who don’t agree with my characterization and want to comment on it: many abused victims help and heal themselves by helping others heal. And just because Tim’s my favorite character and I am a sucker for Jason being a big brother to him, this fic is portrayed that way. It is very much favoritism and I am not ashamed of it.
I genuinely did do so much research on both the series like watching old clips, reading comic panels, reading posts with Red Hood vs Robin characterization and comparative characterization between Jason and other characters + trauma and medical related research. I did that for everyone lol. There's a reason why I write fanfiction. I've deep-dived into analyzations on tumblr and pinterest and talked about it to friends and my dad and formed my own conclusions for it and, idk, I've received like three or something comments that said they didn't like the characterization. I get that people are OOC here, but that's because I was concentrating on abuse and its effects along with the storyline.
I did so much research. My google docs are a mess.
And for the people who clicked out or kept quiet when they found a fic they didn’t like or didn’t agree with: Thank you. So much. Really. You are an amazing person and I hope you have a very nice day.

does she have a favourite child? if not, then what are her most favorite things / traits about each of her children?
nonnie i send u many kisses and affections bc this question is just WONDERFUL!
so she doesn't have a favourite child. like, naturally there are some kids who might receive more words of affirmation or hugs one day, or maybe their love languages are a little different, so from the perspective of an on-looker it could seem like aisling might, for example, ignore eli or tim a lot while helping victor and advik more. but it's also important to know that eli just has a very limited social battery, and tim's happy place is the kitchen, while victor likes to talk about his problems out loud and advik is an eight year old, so he just fires rapid questions 24/7 and aisling has no problem answering them.
basically, she loves all her kids the same, but she also knows their boundaries and limits and trusts them to tell her when they need to be alone or when they need to be around people, and that's also why she's very insistent on at least one family meal in the day. it's also why she loves how involved the diner squad is in the kids' lives, bc tina mightn't be willing to tell aisling something, but richard normally manages to get through to her, yk? it's not that there's not enough love, it's more that sometimes you need specific people, and aisling knows that tina prefers quiet company, so she gravitates towards richard.
on to the next part of your question, which i'm gonna leave beneath a read more!
starting with victor, she definitely loves how he processes things. he finds a lot of peace and quiet in his garden, and he likes being able to work out his own thoughts through his plants, which is the kind of self-awareness that doesn't come very often to teenagers, i think? so the fact that victor found this so helpful, and even contributes his crops to the diner and aisling's dishes, is a hugely admirable thing for aisling, who had no idea how to process her own thoughts and feelings until she was 21 and living in new york. she also absolutely thinks the world of how he's able to figure out when other people need the same kind of ease and tranquility. he won't show his garden to just anyone, but he knows when advik is agitated, or tina is meditating on the roof, that they need to lie low in the greenhouse for a bit while listening to jazz music.
eli is very similar in how he uses music and technology as mediums to work out his own thoughts and feelings, but he also loves being able to use technology to help others. when aisling reveals that she can't read or write, he's the one who helps her to learn how to use the speech to text apps, and he also uses a scanner app on her phone to translate printed documents into an audio recording, so if she receives a letter from any of the schools, she can take a photo and the phone will read the words to her. and it's that kind of thoughtful consideration, plus how smart and kind he is, that aisling loves to pieces.
(it's also worth mentioning that eli and victor are in the unique position of being the only foster kids who are the biological children of a member of the order of V. idk why it's worth mentioning, i just like to mention it IWSFAWJDFASHIADFJ)
next we have tina! aisling is almost killed by tina the first time they meet, and instead of fighting her she's like "u seem pretty unhappy about this, why don't u put the knife down and we'll get some adoption papers sussed out?". tina goes on to attend therapy, but she goes through six therapists in the space of two weeks before finding the right one for her, and it's a constant quality she has that aisling admires so much. tina doesn't give up when she has a goal in mind. she decides to take on a family tree project and finds her maternal grandparents in iowa, learning that they're her only surviving biological family left. she repeatedly cancels dates and parties to go to therapy bc as far as she's concerned, therapy is the priority. about six months after moving into aisling's apartment, she decides that she wants to learn mandarin, and she sticks at it. her perseverance and dedication are things that aisling loves, but it's also her ability to take on feedback and decide whether she can adjust reasonably to it.
fatin is actually a day older than tina, but because of the whole "stranded on an island" situation, they're both happy to let tina be the big sister. however, fatin is instrumental in getting advik to feel more at home and emerge from his shell. her confidence and honesty are qualities that aisling does love, but her favorite quality is fatin's compassion. she stops playing the cello when she moves in with them, but she begins to take up other hobbies that help her bond with her siblings. facial masks, DJing and cake decorating are just a few, and while fatin loves them, she confides in aisling that the real reason for these choices is that she can share them with the others; tina, eli and tim in particular. fatin also doesn't mind going to the zoo for the fifth time in a week, and she works hard on finding fun animal-related activities to share with advik.
elliott is a new kid who stemmed from a single thread, he's super smart, very eager to share that intelligence, and doesn't worry nearly as much about his social status or image as most fifteen year olds would. it's his easy-going sureness of self that aisling loves, but also the way that he conveys information to people without making them feel stupid; elliott also insisted on helping aisling learn the states off by heart, and helped her to study for the citizenship exam. her lack of education posed no problems for him. instead, he exhibited levels of patience and knowledge that far exceed most adults put together, and his quiet confidence keeps him safe from a myriad of attacks from insecure bullies.
advik is the youngest, but his passion and enthusiasm are a few of aisling's favorite traits in him. that and his earnest efforts to soothe troubled souls, both of family and of strangers. one time she brought in a wounded avenger and he made sure to give them a tiger band-aid and some lion crackers, while patting the back of their hand and tell them all the coolest things about their favorite animals.
tim is the quietest of her kids, and yet when he communicates, it's with careful decisiveness and a certainty that aisling admires greatly. in his more social moments, he likes to invite others to bake with him, in particular stanley, henri and rani. his ability to read people is remarkable, and every word and move he makes is only made when he's sure of himself. what others perceive as a withdrawn, indecisive, anxious boy, aisling sees for tim's refusal to operate on any terms beyond his own, and his wariness of new people is often due to his anxiousness to protect his new family from any threats, perceived or otherwise.
honestly, aisling loves them all equally, and she has more foster kids or unofficially adopted kids written by many amazing friends of mine, but i think i better save those for various other posts! tumblr has limits! but yeah, their differences and similarities are some of my favorite things to analyze, and their connections to each other and to outside forces. tysm for asking this my love!!!

this ask is about to be so long i apologize
i’m actually curious about your rini thoughts. idk if you’ve ever said it before but how do you think their relationship was intended to end at first? rinis and ex hsmtmts stans main argument is always “rina is only endgame bc of the jolivia fallout and nini leaving bc of olivia’s popularity”
i’ve always been of the idea it was genuinely a dawson’s creek situation. tim accidentally recreated his favorite show in a way lmao. i do think rini was probably suppose to be endgame at first and rina was suppose to be plot device but when they filmed rinas scenes he realized he has to write towards this (like he said). so he wrote it in a way in s1 where they never truly end their book. even before the flashback the last 2 episodes didn’t close their book at all ricky honestly just seemed more confused about his feelings towards her more than anything. and the flashback (that was confirmed not closure 🫂🫂) makes that even more obvious they didn’t want to close the book.
but anyways i think rini was prob endgame at first and then in the s2 writing room or after reading s1 opinions they realized they accidentally in s1 wrote a relationship that is destined to fail and went with it. the same thing happened with dawsey. they realized the better option was jacey and went with it. and i love when writers realize maybe the relationships or storylines they planned at first aren’t working so they change it (not doing that is how we get horrible endgame relationships especially in disney shows)
i think i remember tim saying he wanted them broken up before any of that irl drama even went down but even if some of it was bc of the drama then ok? it probably gave them the courage to full out end rini and go with rina.
okay so. strap in. this got so long i put it under tab thingy. i know that's called something i just don't remember what 😭
WELP LET'S GOOOO
main rini thoughts: hate the ship, hate the characters together and what they bring out in each other BUT i absolutely love their relationship from a writing perspective. it's very well written and well structured and the writer in me really admires it.
idk if you’ve ever said it before but how do you think their relationship was intended to end at first?
i haven't said it before BUT naturally i have opinions <3 i think their relationship (their romantic one, anyway) was set up to end in much the same way it actually DID end. i'll explain why i think this is a little bit, but just to address the next bit of your ask:
rinis and ex hsmtmts stans main argument is always “rina is only endgame bc of the jolivia fallout and nini leaving bc of olivia’s popularity”
i think that's a fairly valid opinion to hold if not also like. totally wrong. while it may have contributed to how certain scenes were written (lots of video calls between rini etc) the main outcome (rini breakup) i believe has always remained the same. the seeds have been laid since s1 !! (going to explain this dw)
i’ve always been of the idea it was genuinely a dawson’s creek situation. tim accidentally recreated his favorite show in a way lmao. i do think rini was probably suppose to be endgame at first and rina was suppose to be plot device but when they filmed rinas scenes he realized he has to write towards this (like he said).
this is a very interesting interpretation that i don't necessarily...disagree with? but i've got to say, that from analysing the show bc i can't ever just watch something it's pretty clear that rini was never meant to endgame past s1. it's set up in the PILOT. while i can definitely see tim and the writers deciding to focus more on rina, i really do think that rini was always written to fail and was always MEANT to.
so he wrote it in a way in s1 where they never truly end their book. even before the flashback the last 2 episodes didn’t close their book at all ricky honestly just seemed more confused about his feelings towards her more than anything. and the flashback (that was confirmed not closure 🫂🫂) makes that even more obvious they didn’t want to close the book.
yeah i pretty much agree with all of this. they discovered gold with rina, wanted to keep building towards it, but they didn't want to throw away everything they'd built (to fail lmao) with rini, to they left all the necessary avenues open and gave neither ricky OR gina proper closure leading into s2.
okay but now: RINI ANALYSIS (BUT ESP NINI)
so. i said before that rini were never meant to be endgame past s1, and that this was set up in the pilot.
(cheryl blossom voice) let's unpack that, shall we?
in the pilot we encounter a nini who we are told (and shown!) is remarkably different from before. she's stepping out of her comfort zone and auditioning for the lead. now, why is this important?
in 101 nini tells ricky "the old me got her heart broken. and then she went away and she found herself" (or something along those lines lmao i'm too lazy to look it up). this is pretty pivotal bc this is when nini also found her voice. she steps out of her shell (ej says something similar). kourtney makes several remarks of the same nature!! we get the impression that while nini is clearly NOT over ricky, she's much better off without him (while he's spiralling without her).
so now we can follow that thread to 105. nini blows off the homecoming dance and goes to the karaoke bar with kourtney. kourtney signs her up to sing. nini is very adamant that she doesn't want to...and what happens next? they have a heart to heart, where kourtney says something VERY impactful (and i looked this one up bc it is IMPORTANT) - "what happened to the 7th grade nini who used to belt this song out in the back seat of my mum's minivan?" - "she grew up" - "nuh-uh. she met ricky." "what?" "ever since you discovered boys you've spent way too much time trying to see yourself through their eyes."
AND BOOM. THERE IT IS. THERE IT IS
now. WHY am i making such a big deal out of this ONE scene? it's a good kourtney/nini bonding moment, sure, but how does it let us know that rini was written to fail???
let us jump ahead to season 2. specifically, season 2, episode 6.
what happens in 206 that doesn't have anything to do with rina, you ask?
well, dear reader, in 206, nini writes a song. what's that song called?
it's called the rose song. and within the rose song there are a few choice lyrics:
"i am more than what i am to you" - directly inspired by what kourtney says to howie beforehand at slices (there's a lot of focus on nini's reaction to this here btw)
and
AND
"all my life i've seen myself through your eyes"
which okay. WOW. DOES THAT SOUND FAMILIAR ANYONE??????
it's a DIRECT callback to s1. it's a direct callback to all of the problems in the rini relationship that have ALWAYS BEEN THERE.
these seeds were always planted. all the signs were there!!! you just had to look for them <3
to get even deeper into it...rini are endgame in s1 bc they both regress back to the "safe" option. despite moving on from nini (during the period of time gina is actively in his life) ricky confesses his love for her (this is due to lots of things..gina leaving, his parents' divorce etc). nini is safe. he knows her!! ricky's arc in s1 is abt being vulnerable emotionally!! it's abt saying ily!! this had to happen with nini BC he'd known her as long as he'd known her and also bc she'd said it first!! he already knew how she felt !!
whereas nini tried to have it all. she wasn't over ricky but she couldn't be WITH ricky and also chase her dreams. they needed different things from one another, and while it seems like everything is tied up in a neat little bow at the end of s1, it's really just the tip of the iceberg for them.
to make a veryyyy long story short, i think the line "i never outgrew you" says it best. in the end, that's exactly what happened. nini had grown too much as a person to stay "trapped" in her relationship, and ricky had discovered that change wasn't as bad as he thought and learnt to stop relying so heavily on nini (mostly thanks to gina).
in s1, we see rini outgrow each other, even if they don't. in s2, they realise it for themselves. and that's how we know they were ALWAYS written to fail.
anyway, i digress. also i hope this was coherent lmao.

Every Batman Ship Reviewed
Julie Madison: Nobody gives a shit about Julie Madison. Don't pretend you do.
Viki Vale: 5/10. She was done well in the Tim Burton Batman movie, not really anything else. They're alright together but its too vanilla for my tastes.
Selina Kyle: 3/10. Not actively harmful but Jesus does DC over-idolize this ship. They don't go together, that's the point. You only need to watch the first BTAS episode to understand every BatCat story ever. Bruce and Selina meet, they flirt a bit without really diving into the emotional aspect of their characters and how they help each other grow. Bruce and Selina are pitted against each other in some way, usually related to an environmental issue, although Batman writers seem to forget that was the entire reason she was a thief originally. Bruce discovers her identity and he either unhappily sends her to jail or, more likely with later stories, she outsmarts him and manages to actually steal the thing he was trying to stop her from stealing making him look unprofessional and stupid. I actually hate this trope so much that I wrote an entire fic about how when Azrael meets her, he just fucking breaks her wrist, cuffs her, and the story is over because Azrael is actually competent. The best thing to come from this pairing is Helena Wayne. I may be slightly salty because this pairing gets all the limelight and you never see any other relationships besides BruTalia or, if Bruce Timm broke into the writer's room again, BruBabs.
Speaking of which, Talia: 1/10. Jesus Christ, what a nightmare. Just look up any modern storyline involving her and you'll understand why I say that.
Black Canary: 1/10. Step away from Ollie's girlfriend Bruce.
Harley Quinn: 10/10. https://www.tumblr.com/thepiratelordofmordor/695061124450861056/batquinn-and-harlivy-my-perspective?source=share
Kathy Kane: Wait what? I thought they were cousins. I mean I'm no stranger to shipping cousins but I kinda figured we avoided that in canon works. (also the fandom page for Batwoman has a bad habit of just labelling every female individual who claims to be "Batwoman" at some point as Batwoman. That seems counterintuitive but that means that if a character makes a joke about not being Batgirl but instead being Batwoman, she gets a place on the page.)
Lois Lane: 9/10. Just cause I hate the flying boy scout.
Shondra Kinsolving: 1/10. I'm skipping a lot of the most minor relationships because nobody has heard of or cares about the characters but since I'm collecting the Knightfall comic series collections, I actually own the comic she's featured in. Basically the story is fine, if a little sparse on the actual details of their attraction, but what kills it is that, instead of having them break up for any reasons like, oh IDK, being kidnapped by your brother to kill people with psychic powers, the story just gives her brain damage to remove the possibility of a relationship. That's cheap writing and I don't support it.
Wonder Woman: 8/10. I like the idea. This one had some pretty good subtext in Justice League (animated show, 2nd animated show, or movie, take your pick). They'd work well together.
Zatanna Zatara: 8/10. I like them together aesthetically but nobody's ever actually tried to make a story based around these two paired up.
Barbara Gordon: IDK/10. https://www.tumblr.com/thepiratelordofmordor/694586329809485824/brubabs-examination-with-a-hint-of-jokebatsussy?source=share
And now I'm going to bed. Goodnight gentlexen.

Duke being the character only to show authors perspective on other characters but not doing anything with Duke himself.
Batfam constantly bugging Jason's apartment and invading his space despite him not wanting to interact with them and being vocal about that.
Bat-Mom Selina.
1) Duke being the character only to show authors perspective on other characters but not doing anything with Duke himself.
Again, guilty. In 96 messages, Duke technically is the main character, and it's his POV, but the story itself is about finding a random teen on the doorstep of the Manor, and this teen is a freshly resurrected JPT. I do tend to write Jason-centric stories even if I killed him off off-screen before the story even started.
Look. Is it a problem? Absolutely. There's a separate Tumblr someone created that counts how many days between the fics with Duke as the main character and my fic wouldn't have been on it. I see why that tumblr exists and why people are not okay with this trope in general, and I am a part of the problem.
But.
For my creative process, it would have really helped if Duke's family dynamics were as messed up as any other Batfam character that I like. Either that, or a copious amount of therapy that I still need to undergo to let go of that aspect of characters and write just. Stories. With plots. That don't include dissecting unhealthy family dynamics.
So, again, I don't like it, but I won't necessarily judge a writer for it because of glass houses and stones.
2) Batfam constantly bugging Jason's apartment and invading his space despite him not wanting to interact with them and being vocal about that.
Ohhh and Barbara having access to all his phone numbers and such. I know in Batfam, stalking is how they show their love - the fandom attitude is, at least. In comics, they're not actually that bad about invading each other's privacy. (An exception to that I remember is Ric being stalked, but not helped, by Batman. Though to be honest, I don't really think Bruce put that much attention into it; honestly, that felt like a lie he came up with not to seem like an asshole).
Personally, I am like. No. Please leave it in 2010s where it belongs.
It's not only Jason who's the victim of such treatment but basically every Batfam member. Jason is the worst of it, because mostly, he's the one who's on the outs of Batfam, and this is authors' way of Batfam forcing their way in, through his gruff shell of fake lone-wolviness. Does that make sense?
Please note that such fics are often written by Jason in Batfam fans, so it's not that people willfully disregard his right to privacy in their writing, it's just. The way they see Batfam getting through to him, I guess. Basically, not malicious but a failure of imagination.
Bold of them to assume Jason wouldn't clock any and all bugs Batfam could install, though.
3) Bat-Mom Selina.
No. NO. Nooooo. No.
I mean, does she even want kids? Does she need to adopt kids if her partner has them? I mean, the last one I guess - you kinda need to help your partner with their stuff when you tie the knot. It might be you even share legal responsibility for them? Idk. But that also is one of the reasons I don't think BatCat should work: if your partner wants kids and you don't, it's... Not going to work long-term. Or someone's gotta compromise.
Just recently, though, I've seen a post talking about how writing good mom!Selina vs bad mom!Talia is racist and misogynistic and I agree. I especially hate it if Selina is written as Damian's mom. Thank you but he has a mother already. I also blame Tom King for that.
I might let it slide if it's a Stray AU with Selina getting herself not really a kid but a sidekick for the life of crime - Dick, Tim or Jason. Though I would say, Steph being Stray would be far more superior, with Steph messing up Cluemaster's crimes by stealing whatever he wanted to steal first.
Whereas for Jason it would be better if he gets adopted by preboot Nocturna (a thief instead of a vampire rapist). Honestly, the vibe I got from seeing Robin!Jason and Catwoman interactions in comics is, he hates her guts basically. Or at the very least, he's not impressed by her, and she doesn't really care about him either.
With Dick and Tim getting adopted by Catwoman I honestly think it doesn't get deeper than an excuse for a catboy fetish so I'm not really into this trope with them at all.
Helena Wayne is also a thing that exists, but because it's very white picket fence of DC, I tend to pretend that she doesn't, in fact, exist, even in alternate timelines.

Hi! I saw a post on Duke being robin and never being acknowledged, and correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he only one of the many Robins in We are Robin? From what I read, he joined the Bats as Signal, not Robin.
Should he really be included as Robin?
He was a Robin in an alternate universe/timeline thingie, and at one point he was being pushed as a character codenamed 'Lark' with a kind of yellow Robin costume before they settled on the Signal as his ultimate persona. But a lot of that was like, when he was still in his developmental stage and Snyder was kinda...idk, trying different things out with him through various 'alternate takes' before debuting him or developing him much in the main continuity? Its kinda weird.
But yeah for the most part 'officially' he was only ever Robin as one of the many Robins in the We Are Robin movement, and isn't really considered an official Robin as such. BUT the unofficial side of things has to be considered, because a lot of his fans - with validity - view DC as having done a bait and switch with his character, where he was initially teased and hyped as the first black Robin, but then they pulled back from that and made him something else entirely....with a lot of people suspecting that DC refrained from making him an actual Robin because of his race. Like, given comics' shitty track record with antiblackness, the optics are something that have to be considered here, and so between the fact that Duke was 'initially' a Robin, even if only in alternate takes, and the behind the scenes based switcheroo between how DC was initially talking him up versus how he debuted.....people who call him a Robin aren't coming out of nowhere, y'know?
Personally, I don't write him as 'a Robin' specifically except for AU takes (like I have one AU I've been playing around with forever where both Duke and Tim are co-Robins at the same time), but then again, even though Steph was definitively a Robin in the comics, I don't tend to focus on her time as one overly much either. This though is largely because as much as I like both characters, my personal focus character is obviously Dick Grayson, so the lion's share of what I headcanon and meta about tends to be about how other characters relate to him or things about them THROUGH his POV, if you get what I mean?
And from that perspective, there's not a ton to say about EITHER Steph OR Duke as Robins, because......in both cases that had absolutely nothing to do with him. And since I'm also so big on like, the initial meaning of Robin and what Dick created it to be and why, and how I don't think it really works (or at least is massively diluted) when Robin is completely divorced from Dick and his personal connection with it, I'm just like....that's where my interest in the concept, the mantle, lies y'know? Its not that there's NOT stuff to explore in either Steph or Duke as Robins, its just that I already have a ton to explore about the Robin mantle outside of their connection to it, to such an extent that its not something I'm likely to spend too much time on?
Also, at the same time, there's the fact that personally, from an in character/in-universe perspective, I think there's MORE to explore between Dick and both Steph and Duke when its NOT about Robin, but rather, when its about their self-created personas, Spoiler and the Signal, specifically. I think there's a lot more to comment on and build upon when examining Dick's view of and interactions with these two members of the Batfamily, who unlike most of the others, originated their own mantles just like he did himself. Even most of the others' LATER mantles, like Red Hood and Red Robin and Batgirl, were based on something else, but Steph and Duke created Spoiler and the Signal ENTIRELY out of their own personal motivations for being vigilantes and what those mantles meant to THEM, specifically. I think that's something that Dick can really relate to and respects, and gives them an individual bond or dynamic with him that isn't in any way overlapped with any of the other Robins.
But again....that's all from an in-universe perspective. Although that's MY personal preferred focus, I recognize the situation with Duke and the is he or isn't he stance DC took with him being a Robin, and so I'm not going to argue with anyone who DOES classify him as a Robin, because again, there's validity. Same as with people who put more emphasis on Steph as a Robin than I do. Because again, speaking to optics, let's not kid ourselves that Robin is a bit of a 'prestige position' as far as comic book AUDIENCES go, and gives a character built in name recognition to be associated with, and Steph being female and Duke being black have everything in the world to do with why they're less associated with the mantle than others - even if you argue that 'no, they're just less associated with it because they spent less time connected to it' - well again, how do you pretend that had NOTHING to do with the fact that they were the two characters out of all the Robins that DC seemed least inclined to explore or keep connected to a mantle as high profile as Robin? All of this is stuff that I think is just useful and important to keep in mind when examining the issue from multiple angles.
And ultimately, I think most people know that I personally don't spend too much time examining the Robin mantle as a prestige position and in fact a ton of my diatribes about Tim fans, lol, tends to be about how much emphasis certain fandom debates place on characters 'earning Robin' or 'not deserving Robin' when I think from an in character/in universe position, that's a terrible take that completely misses the point of the mantle and its significance WITHIN the Batfamily specifically....and thus I just don't have a ton to say on the out of universe perspective. The in universe one keeps me plenty occupied.
BUT that doesn't mean ignoring that the out of universe perspective EXISTS, and so while I'm not prone to focusing on it, I acknowledge its there and respect other peoples' focus on it, and like, totally get and 'am fine' with others calling Duke a Robin, for whatever that's worth. (Which isn't really much because who the fuck even cares if I personally am fine with it, lmao, but you know what I mean hopefully.)

The fact that Tynion ships TimKon makes me so happy 🥺 Like even if Kon never shows up, it’s still possible we could get scraps and crumbs, like those Conner mentions back when Conner wasn’t even back in existence yet! And idk, scraps and crumbs just mean more when you know it’s not just a coincidence or incidental undertones, when you know the writer ships it then even if it doesn’t become canon you know the subtext is intended! It’s on purpose! You are picking up the correct vibes, which is always a good feeling
Oh yeah definitely!!
little hints and subtextual things being included because it’s something the writer genuinely likes and wants to include how they can holds so much more meaning than like, empty bait that you know theres absolutely zero intent from anyone of it going anywhere.
also sidenote i know Tynion’s not the one writing Tim’s urban legends story but it would be cool for there to be some reference to Kon being with the suicide squad or being missing if Tim doesn’t know thats where he is yet, or at least just some mention of why Young Justice isn’t... all together now (bc even if the group is still active which we have no real indication it is, Kon is gone from it bc Amanda Waller, and like... they’d notice???) (also i mean possibly the suicide squad comic might start to touch on this with Kon but i’d like to see stuff from the perspective of Kon’s friends noticing he’s uhhhh gone)

i got tagged by @jensmisha for the 20 lines meme! Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favorite authors!
lines under the cut
20. “It would be,” Evie hesitates, searching for the right word, “inadvisable,” she settles on, “for you to continue on with Jacob.” damn fine day to tell the truth; Freddy/Jacob, Evie/Henry; as much as i enjoy the Freddy/Jacob dynamic, i never understood why fandom makes them so sappy (i don't begrudge it! i just don't understand it).
19. There’s this space, an Other Space, the In-Between, that Assassins have learned to inhabit – not quite a new plane of existence, but not quite the one their world exists on either, but between the two. liminality; Assassins Creed (movie); Callum/Moussa; this is me trying to explain why we get target confessions.
18. “I wish I could say it’s good to see you,” Naz says, looking at the familiar face, “but it has been one hell of a fucking day.” when i look in my window; The Night Of/Assassins Creed fusion; Freddy/Nasir; this is an incredibly niche and self-indulgent fic lmao
17. A thousand children sing, calling on the baby shark, and then a thousand more. it's the end (doo doo doo doo doo doo); Nursery Rhymes; part of the 'things that go bump' challenge - Baby Shark turns out to be prophetic.
16. “Just us, right, big guy? Us against the world?” feel it (screaming); BFU; Ryan/Shane; ex-zombies and rehabilitation and finding your place in a world that still sees you as a monster.
15. Acceptance. It’s all Barry wants— to write with blood of force; Barry; Barry/NoHo Hank; wing au where people are judged by the wings they have.
14. Croc yanks GQ in, curls around him, protects him from the worst of the blast. take my hand through the flames; Suicide Squad; Croc/GQ
13. There’s blood under Ryan’s fingernails and blood in his teeth and he makes no excuse to the posse that surrounds him, rope in hand. ballad of a law abiding sophisticate; BFU; Ryan/Shane; Demon Shane comes across Demon Hunter Ryan and "saves" him from a posse.
12. They call themselves the Olxol and they can bend space and time and, judging from the reports from Earth, they have no interest in being friends. moonlight raising from the grave; Star Trek AOS; est. and bonded Kirk/Spock; the Enterprise crew is sent back in time but scattered and the effects on Jim and Spock's bond are catastrophic.
11. Jake looks so much like his father that it breaks Trevor’s heart. like i'm looking from a distance; Pacific Rim/The Daily Show RPF; Trevor Noah/Stacker Pentecost; look, Trevor makes a lot of Idris-Elba-will-one-day-be-my-baby-daddy jokes so I took it and ran with it then sprinkled it with some angst.
10. Danny moves to Alola, landing in Hau’oli City of Melemele Island, with only Stoutland and Herdier and Emolga. got a monster for your pocket; H50; Steve/Danny; Pokemon/H50 fusion
9. Shane hates the humans who come traipsing through his woods – calling for him even as they yelp at the sound of songbirds. let's talk some foot; BFU; Ryan/Shane; Bigfoot Shane AU
8. There’s a soft and distant rumbling that wakes Ryan, then the ground shakes and the floors give out beneath him and he thinks he screams. to the end of the world if you wanted to; BFU; Ryan/Shane Highlander Immortals AU where they're separated during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and Shane comes down with a bad case of amnesia that lasts for a hundred years.
7. They’re eleven years old on the day Boyd Crowder declares himself Raylan’s alpha and Raylan punches him in the face for it. i (i had me a boy); Justified; omegaverse Boyd/Raylan
6. Boyd’s always been the snake under Raylan’s pillow. your mouth is poison (your mouth is wine); Justified; Boyd/Raylan; metavorical imagery of Boyd swallowing Raylan every night. For reasons.
5. In times of peace, sons bury their fathers. in times of peace (in times of war); vaguely DCEU/Titans; Bruce/Clark, Clark & Batkids; they've all had to bury someone.
4. “This is not a good idea,” Clark says. all the twitters; DCU/DCEU/Titans; Bruce/Clark, Clark & Batkids; the Batfamily as seen through a series of videos shot by Tim.
3. It hurts. the light, the mark, and the chainsaw; Lucifer; just a quick drabble post-s03e13.
2. The first time they meet, he’s still going by Cain and the mark on his arm is still raw. i don't care (i love your stare); Lucifer; Lucifer/Marcus, au where this isn't Lucifer's first time to earth and he and Cain meet throughout the ages.
1. In a different life, Raylan never leaves Harlan and he dies in a cave-in at nineteen. i'm a mother now (it's really changed my perspective); Justified; omegaverse Raylan/Boyd
If you're saying I pick favorites, you're wrong, I love all my fics equally!
(bolded titles are my favorite, but my most special favorite is probably feel it (screaming) because I could've continued writing that one until it was 50k of just angsty word vomit)
As far as patterns go, well idk? I do tend to use my first lines as my summaries though. First and last lines are the most important part of a fic - or, really, any story; if those are weak, then your reader may not stick around.
um, i can't really remember who all i follow on here, so if you're an author and you're reading this then consider yourself tagged!

This is EVERYTHING WRONG WITH/GREAT ABOUT RED SCHOOL BY SOMAN CHAINANI AND VICTORIA AVEYARD PART 2!!!!!!
If you haven't read part 1, the link is here:
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR RED SCHOOL PART 2!!!! We're hopping right into part 2 of the comic, so LET'S GO!!!
Picking up where we left off⚡
Exposition about the storian towards people who don't have magic⚡
Tedros and Cal look like they're standing the same way and it looks confusing. If this was a movie, Tedros is standing with his right side facing the camera. Either his foot his elevated or his foot is turned towards the camera. Either way, this stance is extra and is too dramatic for thiis situation.🖤
Uhm... If Tedros, Agatha, and Sophie mogrify into any animal at all, shouldn't they be able to turn into animals like phoenixes or dragons and CARRY Cal, Mare, and Maven? That way the Red Queen crew can safely get to the tower safely and they have more numbers.🖤
😑. Either the silvers are broadcasting this ball back to Norta for all to see or this blimp showed up out of nowhere. I want to say the former, but I did not see a camera crew and twenty Evergirls and Everboys crowding around the camera and waving because they want to be famous in the ballroom.🖤
The argument between Mare and Agatha is a great way to build tension. No one's really gpimg to be paying attention because they're going to try and form a plan so everyone gets from point A to point B. Plus, you try talking or expressing your ideas when two people are arguing. My mom and my aunt are damn near impossible to talk over or calm in a fight⚡
Is that RED blood coming off Evangeline's lip? Did she bite someone or did someone forget she's a slperson with SILVER BLOOD?⚡/🖤
Self sacrifice. Seriously, this part hurt more than it should have, and I read this AFTER reading War Storm while we could go to school.⚡
I don't know whether or not Cal and Tedros would have survived this fall, but the fog takes them over so they could be fine. I say I don't know because the fall isn't TOO far down, but in another panel, the blimp is TOO high to survive, but that can be perspective. Either way, these two SOMEHOW survive this fall🖤
The scene of Mare revealing her blood to Agatha and Agatha's response is... underwhelming. Really, the main plot of Red Queen is that Mare needs to hide in plain sight or she, her family, and anyone else suspicious will die. The only discrimination or segregation Agatha has to deal with is bring an outcast, or a witch as everyone likes to call her, and being picked on for "being in the wrong school," which is not the case. Don't get me wrong, bullying and being ostracized are not okay, all the same that is not the same as being pushed down by a higher class or forced to work or go fight a war that shouldn't be your problem in the first place.🖤
Even the STYMPHS are taken over? IS THERE NO MERCY FOR ANYONE!?⚡
That'll teach you to be careful with your words⚡
Sophie: Best driver ever. 10/10⚡
Super hero pose⚡ +2 for the SGE trio and Red Queen trio going toe to toe with the SGE trio.⚡⚡
Going back to the points of the who our baddy is, once you really break it down, it's not that hard to figure out. Some characters disappear and then reappear somewhere else, either as fodder, background characters, or zombies. We saw Elara once when she was normal, and then she disappeared. Here she is now in the School Master's tower with the storian.🖤
I will admit that it was a great idea to have Elara be our villain. She was one of the main villains in Mare's story and only wanted the throne, even when she was a king's wife and close enough to the crown in order to manipulate the person WEARING the crown.⚡
The emotion in Maven when he sees his mother IS the reason for the fog is just sad. Anyone who's read the Red Queen series will know how Elara treated Maven and what kind of scars she left on him, taking out what wasn't "perfect" in her eyes and replacing those pieces with whatever helped him to surpass Cal. Their relationship was extremely problematic, to say the least, but there is some serious sorrow on his face at the thought of hurting or potentially killing her. There's pain and maybe some hate in abuse, but there is still love for the abuser FROM THE ABUSEE. My sister's boyfriend came from an abusive relationship with his mother and he still talks to her because he loves her.⚡
Okay. Evil Dovey is kind of scary.⚡
Credit where credit's due. Dovey does not stay down, even after that hit from Agatha⚡
Self sacrifice ⚡
Elara's fast for a possessed woman⚡
Oooh, the whispers controlling Agatha. Tragedy points because Mare can't just HURT Agatha⚡
OKAY. Maybe it's because her whispers aren't as strong because she's not herself. Maybe it's Agatha's will power, but her self esteem and self worth are questionable. All the same, it was TOO damn easy fpr Mare to pull Agatha out of those whispers!!🖤
ALSO, why is there always a stomp on the fingers or hand when a character's hanging or on the ground? This is a legit question, why is that a trope in everything I see!? Is it like salt on the wound? Insult to injury!? Idk, someone PLEASE tell me because I'm confused and it's driving me barking mad!!!!🖤
I will admit I did not see Mare grabbing the storian and saving herself. Clever, Mare. Clever⚡
Hugging⚡
The red spirit/fog that leaves Elara is so telling. Thw School Master WE'VE been seeing is not the same School Master as the SGE series. Way to make this seriously deviate from the original books⚡
Well. Earned. Comeuppance. I will never forget Chapter 21 of Red Queen or the chapters prior.⚡
I am so glad to see everyone go back to normal. Really, just helps me breathe now.⚡
Not joking: this was me during this scene with Elara facing the king and School Master⚡/🖤:
Tumblr media
>LAUGHTER<😂 I'm so sorry!!! I keep hearing Edna from The Incredibles saying, "EXPLAIN YOURSELF!" and Elara responds in Vincent Price's voice from narrating Tim Burton's Vincent, "I'm being possessed." ⚡
Also, Tibe, KEEP THOSE MANACLES ON HER. DO NOT LET HER TAKE THEM OFF. YOU WILL LIVE LONGER IF YOU DO.⚡/🖤
Okay. So we saw RAFAL in spirit and the School Master we've been following is his brother Rhian. This is technically a timeline where either Evil has a winning streak or bith sides are equal. ... 😑I want a series of THAT now. Same characters, same events, but both schools now more competitive than ever to see who gets to next win in their fairytale.🖤
I'm on the fence now with the resolution of this situation. True Elara is getting off with nothing but a scolding and a slap on the wrist(especially for what she does in the Red Queen series), but at the same time, SHE WAS POSSESSED BY AN EVIL SPIRIT. She probably didn't have a lot of control over her actions. There's a debate that's going to happen now, and I don't know if I can participate because I'm on the fence. ... I hate fence sitting😑 ⚡/🖤
Love. Granted it's probably going to toxic and they're going to fight a lot, but who knows? Maven can teach Sophie how to be Good AND Evil, and Sophie can TRY to help Maven. ⚡
I know it's technically an AU, but I'm still mad good boy Maven is not with Mare.🖤
If Tedros was a little bit older, his and Cal's ship name would be/is either Gold Blood or Fire and Gold. ⚡
Again, IF TEDROS WAS OLDER🖤
This isn't tied up with a neat and tidy bow. There's a chance Rafal can come back. The world and school are still in danger. THE LAST PAGE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A "THE END." JUST "THE EN." 🖤
... Oh, well. I still had fun reading this. Thank you so much to Soman Chainani and Victoria Aveyard for doing this for your fans!!!😃😁😃😁😃😁😃😁😃😁⚡⚡⚡💛💛💛❤💛❤💛❤💛❤💛
MAN, I had fun with this!! A little on the nose, but hey, this is a tumblr post, not a video.
I really hope you guys liked this, I had a great time writing it!! I know some of the sins are harsh, but I still really like this comic and what it had to offer.
It came out while I was in a really bad place, both physically and mentally, and it was one of the things that got me through it. Sorry if that sounds bad, I promise there's more I value and look forward to in life than some books😅
Thank you again for reading, wtay safe durimg this time, AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!

List of songs that give me Jam vibes and why !! ( + context and shtuff )
Letter by Mother Mother - ( from Tim’s perspective ) After Jay died, he started writing letters to Jay to cope, but never really stopped writing the letters.
Arms Tonite by Mother Mother ( yes I know what this song is actually about, but it still kind of applies either way...? Idk ) - an AU with a small change: Instead of Jay just dying alone on the floor, Tim finds Jay and he ends up dying in Tim’s arms while Tim hopelessly sobs ( pretty self-explanatory ).
Hidden In The Sand by Tally Hall - ( from Jays perspective ) Jay wants to be with Tim but Tim doesn’t seem interested in Jay and just dating in general. Which Jay can’t really blame him for, considering their situation. But god, Jay is just so hopelessly in love with Tim and wants to be with him so badly.
Problems by Mother Mother - ( from either perspective, but mostly Tim’s ) The lyrics would probably lean more towards Tim’s perspective, but I just love imagining Jay being all spunky and being like “I have SO many issues and SO much trauma from all of this, not to mention the trauma I have gained from past relationships. So get used to my trust issues!".
Can I Have A Ride Home? I’m At A Party And I Don’t Know Anyone by Carpetgarden - ( from Jays perspective ) mostly just the chorus gives me Jam/Jay vibes. Especially the “my best friend does not like me“, referring to Alex. A lot of it isn’t too Jam-y, but the lyric “we’re just two boys in love, what’s so bad?” screams Jam vibes. Or almost any MLM relationship but I’m making it Jam because I can, shut up-
I Need A Doctor by Dr. Dre, Eminem, And Skylar Grey - ( from Tim’s perspective after Jay died ) there’s quite a lot of lyrics and if I break even just a couple of them down, I will just be repeating myself over and over again. But I think the chorus just speaks for itself. I recommend you listen to the song and read the lyrics to understand this one. I’m sorry, it’s like 2 AM and I don’t want to write all that shit rn lmao
Oh Ana by Mother Mother - ( from Jay/Skully’s perspective ) I headcanon that after Jay died, the Operator took his body and made him into Skully. But Skully isn’t exactly 100%… Skully, if that’s that right wording. So Jay’s motivations are Skully’s motivations. So, he wants to save Tim, a.k.a., “kill“ Tim.
Joyfulthought by Mom - ( from Jay’s perspective ) Jay and Tim are in a hotel room and Jay is more sleep deprived than usual, to the point where he doesn’t exactly know what’s coming out of his mouth or the difference between what he’s thinking and what he’s actually saying out loud. In result to this, he ends up telling Tim everything that he feels about him. A.k.a., he confesses his ‘undying love’ for Tim.
( this one is just,, crack- ) Emo Boy by Ayesha Erotica - ( from Jays perspective ) just listen to it, you probably already know it from TikTok. Jsjdjfhhfhf-
( sorry if a lot of these seem overused and/or over done. I tried to not be so cliché and stuff so sorry if any of this is very cliché! Also, I will probably be adding onto this in the future so...if you want more of that, stay tuned! Or whatever- )

THE POSITIVE & NEGATIVE; Mun & Muse - Meme.
fill out & repost ♥ This meme definitely favors canons more, but I hope OC’s still can make it somehow work with their own lore, and lil’ fandom of friends & mutuals. Multi-Muses pick the muse you are the most invested in atm. tagged by: stolen from @dansiere tagging: @ghiassan, @deathsreflection, @altuspavus, @windrunnerrs (velanna), @hopewrought, @willbeshot, @seahaloed (iron bull), @asterfed (noctis), @ anyone who wants to steal it! also multis feel free to choose a different character
Tumblr media
My muse is:   canon / oc / au / canon-divergent / fandomless / complicated (i’m open to roleplaying with non-dragon age characters, and have AUs for other fandoms)
Is your character popular in the fandom? YES / NO. solas is both wildly popular and wildly hated. he’s been more consistently popular than the controversial women in the series, like sera or vivienne, who have only recently begun to get to the point where their tags are less vitriolic (although i’m sure it’s still out there), but there’s still a sizable hatedom that can’t have his name breathed in their vicinity w/o them talking abt how much they hate him. even if you’re currently cosplaying him!
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. again, you have ppl who are super into him and ppl who think he’s ugly. my personal opinion is that i think he’s weirdly pretty, and wish ppl would commit more to his unconventional features rather than try to chisel him into sb more traditionally attractive and that ppl who don’t find him attractive would maybe chill w/ calling him ugly. find him unattractive by all means, but lets embrace the fact that inquisition let their love interests have skin flaws etc and accept that some won’t be our cups of tea.
Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. its hard to deny at this point tbh.
Are they underrated?  YES / NO / IDK. frustrating as the hate in the tags he has enough fans that i couldnt say he’s underrated w/ a straight face.
Were they relevant for the main story?  YES / NO. he’s the reason the game starts with a bang and not the inevitable dissolution of the conclave b/c the sides are disparate.
Were they relevant for the main character? YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG. regardless of solas’ relationship with the inquisitor, there are parallels and contrasts in their stories and he also is the reason they survive inquisition.
Are they widely known in their world? YES / NO. fen’harel is well-known and revered, if feared, among the dalish, yet at the same time he’s not remembered for a lot besides locking the gods away-- and the context of that decision has also been lost. as solas he’s relatively unknown until inquisition and especially trespasser.
How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL. again, polarising!! he has loyal agents and people are willing to speak well of him despite everything, including his enemies sometimes (depending mostly on the inquisitor).
How strictly do you follow canon?  — generally i try to have a canon basis for my interpretation, even if i interpret the text differently than the author.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  solas is an immortal who is simultaneously jaded and very much invested in the small moments of life. far from being weary of the day-to-day lives of ordinary people, it is systems and orders he is most tired of. he walks an interesting line that feels far less misanthropic than other immortal characters i’ve experienced, yet still he’s quite cynical. as a character who has fought against religious based tyranny before, but in a completely different era, he is in a unique position where what he sees around him is both horrifyingly familiar and yet completely new. it allows an exploration of the wrongs of thedas’ society from an outsider’s perspective. his motivations are complex and multifaceted, often condemnable and yet also understandable. his character arc in inquisition (if befriended, or regardless in the case of my solas) takes him from a dispassionate, disconnected antagonist to someone deeply invested in the people of thedas, deeply conflicted and actively hoping he will be proven wrong again. i think his story is a testament to human (or elven, or dwarven, or-) connection and how even when we resist we can’t resist creating bonds with the people in our lives. i personally see this bond going beyond the inquisitor hence why i play low-approval solas as conflicted as high-approval, if not when it comes to the inquisitor.
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —  solas is selfish and motivated solely by revenge, he’s clinging to a past that clearly no longer exists, if you ignore all the people from it who are still alive. he’s totally unaware of all his flaws and never owns up to any mistakes ever. no, i haven’t listened to a single word solas has said in my life why do you ask. he’s also critical of my faves which means he’s #cancelled, there is clearly no validity to what he’s saying. ksjdf no but in all seriousness i think a lot of reasons ppl don’t find solas interesting are just... weird readings of his character that sometimes have no basis in the text of inquisition, but also there are plenty of perfectly valid reasons to not find him interesting. usually those ppl don’t like... talk abt how much they don’t find him interesting constantly tho. they just chill and aren’t invested in this particular villain. for one thing i think the game missed out on opportunities for exploring how someone who may not have even had a body at the beginning of his existence would feel about gender and sexuality, so making him presumably straight and cis was a boring choice. i also think that the dragon age games being very protagonist-centric hurts solas’ character, there’s no real reason why the inquisitor is the only one who can throw his plans into question but making the player the center of the universe means he’s not allowed to change due to the effects of other companions or NPCs. thank god this is rp and i do what i want.
What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  i have a history degree so when the inquisition companions were being teased, solas describing bias in primary sources from the memories he’s seen got me interested in him. but my first playthrough i didn’t actually take him with me all too often, i think my main party was dorian-blackwall-varric. i liked him, and i think he or dorian were my first friends in skyhold, but my initial interest was in other characters. between his dialogue that appealed to the historian in me tho and how his spirit opinions sort of turned everything i’d felt about spirits in the last two games on its head, i started vibing with him more the farther i went in. like merrill set me up for the “spirits are people” thing and solas hit it out of the park. then temple of mythal happened, and i did bring solas with me there. i found his dialogue fascinating and also suspicious, i’d just finished masked empire like the day before da:i came out so i definitely thought solas was an ancient elf in the same vein as felassan. it was after temple of mythal that i actually decided to make his blog, although like as one idk linchpin to cement my status as solas trash... i was hit BAD by the banter bug on my first playthrough, probably got like a dozen banters total. but then at some point late in the game i took solas to the forbidden oasis and he wouldn’t stop talking to people, and i really loved his banter with the rest of my party at the time.
What keeps your inspiration going?  —  replaying inquisition, new DA content when the bioware gods deign to grant us a lifeline, but the biggest thing is my rp partners. i wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the people i write with, new and old. my activity of late hasn’t been the best, work and the summer heat has really been sapping me of energy, and does even during years when we aren’t going through a pandemic. but it’s the thought of my rp partners and love of solas that keeps me coming back.
Some more personal questions for the mun.
Give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO / I SINCERELY HOPE I DO? i have my doubts sometimes, but i think i do ok.
Do you frequently write headcanons?  YES / NO / SORT OF? there is no headcanon too small for me.
Do you sometimes write drabbles?  YES / NO. but not lately * gestures to the low activity * i’ve been in this cycle where i get anxious abt late replies, so prioritise them, then burn myself out and can’t write the fics i want. i’ve had two i’ve been DYING to write tho i just... need to find the space in my brain to let myself.
Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES / NO. i mean it depends on the day. if i work closing shifts at my store it gets very quiet and boring around 8:30 so i spent the next 90 minutes thinking about character stuff.
Are you confident in your portrayal?  YES / NO / SORT OF?
Are you confident in your writing?  YES / NO / SOMETIMES.
Are you a sensitive person?  YES / NO / SORTA.
Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  —  i’m going to say ‘no’ because like, i don’t ask for criticism. this is a hobby based on my interpretation of a character, if you think i write solas too soft then you’re welcome to think that, but i’m happy with the balance i’ve struck with his internal versus external behaviour and how he changes based upon who he’s speaking to. if you think i’m erasing straight people by making solas pan then ksjdfs. ok.
Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?  —  yes!!! even if they retread ground already trodden, a) my interpretation may have adjusted since the last time i played or b) a reminder is nice. if it’s new stuff then it’s fun to think about.
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  it’d depend on why they disagree. if they just disagree on a subjective opinion about what i took from a certain line, then they’re welcome to their opinion but i don’t necessarily care to hear it. if it is unintentionally hurtful then i would like to know. although rather than a comment i’d rather a non-anonymous message.
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  —  same as the above.
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  —  if they’re vocal about it i typically just unfollow / softblock if i was following in the first place. people can feel how they want about solas, but i’ve found over the years that if people really hate solas ooc it can often bleed into their ic interactions. it’s really weird seeing your character being brought up repeatedly in threads with others specifically to dunk on, for no reason other than i guess solas is living rent free in their heads, so at least we have that in common. but anyway unfollowing is just the best choice to avoid getting kinda pressed if i’m having a bad day.
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  —  roleplay is the wild west of writing, so i think it’d depend on what the error was. coming at me like “you shouldn’t start a sentence with a preposition” would get a laugh, but i don’t edit my replies much if at all and mistakes will 100% happen. pointing out typos is chill so long as you do it politely.
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   —  it depends! i’ve learned that being too easy going actually just means i’m subjecting myself to negative emotions to please people. so i’ve gotten less easy going as the years go by. how does one define “easy going” anyway? does asking that question mean i am objectively not easy going? the longer this thought goes on the more the answer seems to be “probably not,” but i like to think it could be a lot worse.

more thoughts about the magnus archives as i reread the transcripts
i was thinking about how gertrude robinson was really an extraordinary person (not extraordinarily Morally Sound, but extraordinary) just because of who she was, whereas the only extraordinary things about jonathan sims are things that have been arranged for him (i.e. his role). i don't mean this as a diss for jonathan, as i'm not extraordinary either. it's just striking that gertrude was so driven and confident compared to jon. of course, now we know that basically everything she did was in the pursuit of a moot goal (i.e. killing people in order to stop rituals that were already doomed to fail) so maybe my point is somewhat moot as well.
i've been doing some rereading of episodes on my phone (i.e. away from this text document on my computer) and i'll have a realization like "right, i should note that down when i get back to my computer" and i have forgotten all of them now that i am back at my computer. suffice it to say there are quite a few things i misheard/misunderstood on the first listen, unsurprisingly.
reading through the first 20 or so episodes i'm surprised by how well i remember each of them, considering i was listening like 4 episodes a day when i started. then again, it was only a month or two ago that i even listened to them, so one should hope my memory is at least this good. anyway the first episode i'm re-listening instead of rereading is 22 bc that's the first one where we hear martin's voice, i'm pretty sure
i've also noticed some errors in the official transcripts, which aren't a big deal because obviously what matters most is the audio, but still... some of them have been simple typos. magnus archives hire me as your official transcriptionist and i'll make all your transcripts 100% error-free bc im smatr
(reading through the rest of the transcripts and my standards went way down in terms of grammar/stylistic consistency, as most of the later ones are fan transcripts by several different people. i found quite a few mistakes, but obviously i have no particular way to help fix them short of sending an email to the tma transcripts fansite person like “hey there’s all these mistakes. upload my good version instead?” bc i’m not that much of a dick)
the whole reason martin went to the spider guy's building was because he didn't want jon to be disappointed in him for not doing Due Diligence. he says so twice. then he went back for the same reason. it seems the fandom joke is "jon asks his assistants to do crimes for him" but in this case martin is like "oh no maybe i didn't do enough crimes to satisfy jon"
jon was doing his archivist voice HEAVILY in season 1, huh?
tim's first appearance is so jovial compared to how he ends up...
if this boat lady is speaking spanish in brazil, then it doesn't matter if it was "bad spanish" or not. anyway now i understand why we already knew peter lukas was serving the lonely by the time jon mentioned offhand that peter lukas was serving the lonely. it was my whole “let’s not bother noting down any FREQUENTLY RECURRING names”
well i guess robert smirke was a real person. should i feel dumb about this? idk. it’s such a fictional-sounding name, to be fair. but i guess that set the precedent of using a real person as an important historical figure in the fiction that we see happening again when edmund halley is referenced later on. also episode 35 has foreshadowing for the separation of 14 powers, and people thought it was 13 because they mention 13 halls PLUS the one they came through.
totally forgot about tim goofing around in episode 39... he was really not having the worst time at this job before bad things started happening and he realized he was trapped, huh
the worms were trying to make a doorway into the Worm Wealm
ep 40 jon's like "I need to hear it. I need to record it. Or else I can't finish." (lightly abridged)
listening to the season 1 Q&A for the first time and EARL BIGMAC
also good to know there's only going to be 5 seasons. very good to know. this seems like a good kind of series to write with a fixed endpoint in mind, as it's very easy to do an episode that has effectively no bearing on the MetaPlot but which is still a short story in itself and therefore doesn't count as "filler"
jonathan sims performs with a mythical space pirate music cabaret. so he IS a ham
jonny says, "no rude words. i could say bums, maybe..." (alexander j newall does a laugh while i do the exact same laugh irl) "...but i won't."
some dumbass writing into the Q&A to ask if the background music is diegetic... get a podcast brain, ya fool. though for my part, i have to say that one of the most striking things about this podcast when i first started listening (though i never made a note of it before) was the Too Spooky Music, and i didn't like it at all. the reason was that i am, and have been, vulnerable to Getting Spooked about irrational things at night, such that it becomes really hard to fall asleep... and one of the things that has an outsize effect on my level of Spookédness is spooky audio. so if i was watching a video at night and i was worried it would Get Me Spooked, i would just turn the sound off, and it would turn out fine. but obviously you can't turn the sound off on a podcast. and i've been listening to podcasts after work, i.e. after 5pm, and i go to bed at like 8 or 9pm because i'm old. so the way it turned out was that even if the actual subject of the podcast wasn't that scary to me, the music would amplify it in an unpleasant way and make me more likely to have trouble sleeping. also i think most of the episodes would have been fine without the music, or maybe with some less intentionally-disconcerting background music.
this just in: i seem to have totally missed episode 50 on my first listen-through, despite having gone in linear order. bc i'm listening to it now and i've definitely never heard this before. fortunately it doesn't seem to have much of a bearing on the rest of the series, so it's not like i missed any crucial information. tbh the only worthwhile bit was a brief moment of tim being a ham, which was good. i hope i didn't miss any other episodes the first time... still don't know how i managed to miss this one.
the official transcript said [EXTENDED SOUNDS OF BRUTAL PIPE MURDER] ...
so gertrude and leitner WERE played by jonny's parents <:3c i'd thought as much when i saw the cast names but i like that it's confirmed. his mom is a really good actress too. i always find the gertrude episodes to be striking in a certain way
"it's Fine working with your parents. it's Fine." as someone who worked with my mom for like a year i can confirm this
i'm tickled to find that the official transcripts have a sense of humor. i wonder who is behind them. i also wonder, what is the excuse for not having a full set of official transcripts when it is a script-based show? surely you know what is going to be said beforehand, and you have it written down, and if someone ends up saying something different in the final recording, surely it wouldn’t be too hard to give the original script a little edit, and bam! that’s a transcript. i wonder if this approach is not feasible for some reason.
whenever martin reads statements, he says something about jon... whenever he talks to someone, he says something about jon
i think episode 110 is an instance of the tape recorder turning ITSELF off... at the end of the episode. because they walk away, and they say something distantly, and then it turns off. lots of other times, there had to be a diegetic reason for the tape recorder to turn off at the end.
i noticed something which i missed last time, which was that there is a rumor between melanie and georgie and basira that implies that jonathan is asexual. worth noting, i think. [side note added in later: yeah it’s canon. cool]
also i listened to episode 103 again and yes. i had thought-- i had been SURE-- that the person interrogating the traffic cop (using the asky ability) was martin. but it was actually jon. how did i possibly manage that mistake? i'm not great at distinguishing voices, but i'm not THAT bad. the only possible answer: when i was listening to the episode for the first time... i must have been eating a crunchy snack.
"it doesn't have to make sense! alex has to make it sense." (jonny sims re: writing the spiral)
glad to know that jonny sims regrets using his own name for the protagonist. doesn't make a difference either way at this point but yeah
YES i knew episode 100 was improvised. and i see, all the statementers had actually had supernatural experiences, but because the archivist was absent, their statements didn't have the coherence and clarity normally lent to them by the eye (in exchange for becoming cursed). i think melanie or basira actually said pretty much that in the episode itself, but i still couldn't be sure that all of those people had something real to talk about.
"in the same way that tim is dead, michael is helen." good shit
the archivist is canon a bit of a drama queen. the first bullet point in my first tma notes document is vindicated
jonny sims mentions another podcast (apocrypals) that sounds 100% up my alley, so that is appreciated, i will add that to my list i think. (listened to episodes 0 and 1 of apocrypals and i'm heavily struck by how VERY clearly i can hear the smiles in chris sims's voice. i did not know smiling could be so audible, truly.) (listened to quite a few more episodes of apocrypals and it’s certainly entertaining at times. i should’ve been reading along though. maybe some other time)
I DIDN'T LISTEN TO THE SEASON 4 TEASER THE FIRST TIME AROUND.........................................
i must confess something that people who know me well may already know: i hate when stories have a bad ending. an unhappy ending. a painful ending. a hopeless ending. bittersweet is the furthest in that direction i can tolerate. my perspective, which is pretty deep-seated, is that there's no point in getting to know and love characters if you're only going to be hurt by that connection to them when the end turns out to be bad. if i have even a mild inkling that a story is heading toward a bad ending, i make a conscious effort to regard all characters from afar and not develop any strong attachments. this is not so much "how i think all stories need to be," but rather, "the characteristics a story needs to have to appeal to me personally." so i understand that my view is very subjective and mostly based on my own mental weakness. but i can't help but apply it to the media i consume. and the idea that someone would do something like "make characters very human and strongly developed" IN COMBINATION WITH "heading toward a bad end" makes me upset. like, picture a horror movie. think about the characters in a horror movie. with the exception of a main character, if there is one, there's no guarantee that anyone is going to survive to the end of the film... BUT... the characters generally aren't fleshed out and very sympathetic. i wouldn't go so far as to say they're disposable, but you're not SUPPOSED to cry when they die; you're just supposed to get scared. their purpose is as objects of fear, and you never expect or even hope for a happy ending. but in the magnus archives... all i'm saying... is that i would cry if any of the remaining members of the main cast died. and it seems clear that we're not heading to a happy ending. so i'm somewhat afraid, and not in a good way. i don't know how much i can trust jonny sims to give me the story i want, and obviously, i'm not entitled to it.
if your name is jonathan and you want to shorten it, the short form is jon. it ain't john, no matter what the official transcripts say. where'd you get that h, huh? stole it from someone else's name? are you shortening it like JOnatHaN? you can’t just be that sneaky!
i listened to scrutiny again and it hits so hard. now, in heart of darkness, when manuela begs jon not to force her statement, it's really heavy given the direct context of the previous two episodes where we see how compulsion works and how it hurts.
also when jon was talking about how to destroy the dark sun and he was like "i just need to see it," when i first heard it, i assumed he meant something along the lines of, "by seeing it, i will learn how to destroy it." but now i understand that the mere act of the eye seeing it destroys it, because being known is what the darkness is weakest to.
the magnus employees who work in the library probably at least have a LITTLE BIT of a feeling that they work in an almost normal place, given that jon and all his assistants were able to have that impression before transferring to the archives. so i wonder how the magnus library people feel about their institute's director getting arrested for double murder and now the big boss is a completely unrelated ship captain who seems to want nothing to do with the place but simultaneously is trying to continue business as usual
on second listen, listening to jon ask helen when the guilt stops (wrt hurting people in order to feed one's patron fear) is pretty chilling. because it seems like he's definitely accepting that he will have to hurt people, and what he's concerned about is how bad it makes HIM feel. of course, helen then answers with precisely what i just wrote, so...
i should've read the transcript for episode 159 instead of relistening because i forgot that peter lukas's actor got so gravelly and hard to listen to in this one. anyway, time to re-listen to the season 4 finale... then i'll listen to the season 4 Q&As and stuff... and then the new episode. (DOKI DOKI DOKI DOKI DOKI)
i heard in the Q&A that the voice of peter lukas did multiple takes for episode 159?! but it was because of technical difficulties. right. because i can’t imagine the way it turned out being deemed the best take. sorry
ok, things i missed last time i listened to 160: daisy and the other two hunters are missing. also jon mentioned "magnus's body" and martin mentioned "an old man's corpse" and at the time i took this to mean (somewhat unthinkingly) that when jon and martin returned from the lonely, they killed elias/jonah's body. which would be a weird thing to happen "off-camera," so to speak. so i think i must have been wrong? slightly confused. ok, no, i'm now sure that elias survived, so i must have misunderstood. definitely alive.
as martin leaves and jon is about to begin the statement, he sounds so peaceful and satisfied. that's good acting.
by the way, in one of the previous few episodes, i noticed that jonah seems to have body-swapped by switching out his eyes into his preferred body, which i'm pretty sure i missed the first time.
i like that jonny sims checks reddit to see whether people have solved the mystery. that's just a really funny way to do things, sneaking a peek like "hmm how mysterious is my mystery? let's see who has figured it out..." and for the record, i wasn't even close to figuring it out. but to be fair to myself, i didn't try. like i said from the beginning, i started listening with the intent of going along for the ride. plus the mystery had already been solved before i started listening to the series, so it's not like i had a lot of time in between updates to contemplate whether elias was jonah, etc.
JON'S AMERICAN ACCENT FOR THE IONIZED YEAST AD
ALEX WAS THE VOICE OF JARED HOPWORTH?! i mean it was so messed up it could have been anybody but god
ALEX DIDN'T LET GERTUDE CACKLE
i've listened to the bloopers (including a gertrude cackle?) and the season 5 trailer (martin seems slightly cavalier about the end of the world but maybe he's just trying to keep his shit together for jon) and i'm going to listen to the new episode Soon.
final conclusion on rereads/relistens: i had pretty poor comprehension of some important happenings. i’m realizing just how easy it is to mishear/fail to hear exactly what is happening in a podcast when you’re doing other stuff at the same time. there are still a couple things i don’t quite understand, but i think i’ll have a look around the wiki one of these days.

Tagged by the wonderful @corsairesque, the lovely @azawrites, the stellar @sunlight-and-starskies, and the incomparable @inexorableblob - thanks!
And @inexorableblob, thank you for letting me rewrite the end of The Great Gatsby. It was very cathartic.
Rules: Answer 11 questions, write 11 questions, tag 11 people!
Bilbo Taggins: @aurumni-writes @quilloftheclouds @aslanwrites @starlitesymphony @writingonesdreams @waterfallwritings @cataclysmic-writer @ren-c-leyn @timefirewrites @minusfractions @ink-flavored - and if you like the questions and aren’t tagged, feel free to answer them! And tag me so I can see!
My Questions:
How many licks would it take for your OCs to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?
What are your favorite smells?
What’s the book you’ve read most recently? What did you think of it? What impressed you? What would you have done differently?
What are your thoughts on mugs?
If your OCs had a comic book series/graphic novel about them, what would it be called? What would be on the cover? What would the art style be?
Can you draw a bear?
Do you do any other kinds of art? Are you ever influenced by other kinds of art? What about other areas like science or mathematics/other disciplines?
Have you read any craft books or writing advice books? If yes, how have the helped or hindered you? Which would you recommend? If no, would you ever consider reading them?
What are your favorite kinds of narratives? What narrative structures do you prefer to write and what do you prefer to read?
What’s your favorite recipe?
What are some signs that make you consider setting a project aside vs continuing with it?
As always, answers under the cut!
@corsairesque‘s Questions:
1. Do you create playlists for your stories or characters?
I do!
Here’s a detailed post about how I make them.
This is Mel’s from H2H.
This is Gemma’s from H2H.
This is one for the story I recently posted.
And I have one for each WIP on my WIP page! (Mostly, I’m still working on Fish Food’s.)
I actually have folders in Spotify for my characters and stories. Each one gets a playlist.
2. What is your stance on endings that don’t end with some hope?
Sometimes a story needs to have a certain ending to have an emotionally satisfying conclusion. I don’t think hope is absolutely required for an ending. I’ve ended stories without hope because that’s how the story ends. If I wrote it to conclude with an upturn, it would’ve been disloyal to the narrative. Like life, not everything ends happily, or with a positive outlook.
If you want it from a more technical perspective, there are three sorts of endings: positive, negative, and neutral. They can mix and match, but these are the three base ones. I tend toward neutral or positive-neutral endings. The best story I’ve written so far has a negative-leaning neutral ending because it concludes with a loss that does not promise hope. Positive endings are not necessary for a narrative, or for a conclusion.
Sometimes you need to write a hopeful ending. Sometimes you need to read a hopeful ending. And sometimes you need to read or write something that ends on a down-note. I know I have.
So, TL;DR, there is no ending hierarchy. It all depends on the reader and the writer, what they need, and what the story demands.
3. What author would you love to hear feedback from on your WIP?
Of literally anyone? Dead or alive? I mean. I’d love to hear what Flannery O’Connor would have to say about my short stories. I try to do a remix-version of her moments of grace in each of them.
4. What is the genre of your WIP(s)?
I mention these on my WIP page!
Most of my short stories are literary and contemporary fiction. My longer projects tend toward low fantasy.
5. How do you come up with new ideas for your WIP(s)?
I don’t have a method or anything for idea generation. My brain works in the background while I’m doing other things, so I’ll be washing dishes, or brushing my teeth, or writing something else, and an idea goes HI HELLO WHAT ABOUT THIS HUH? and I scramble to write it down.
Most of the time, my story ideas come from cool sentences I think of while observing. That sounds super weird and nerdy, but it’s true! When I’m bored or need to occupy my brain or just sorta feel like creating something spontaneous, I’ll look around and figure out how I’d write about a certain thing in the vicinity.
Some examples of this from my phone notes:
“Laughter echoing through a cave, bouncing off the walls, the gift of hearing it over and over until it fades like gentle waking”
“Cheeks baked pink from the flush of her modesty”
“The last remnants of home, the dirt hidden beneath their fingernails”
“Headlights flicker between the gaps in the barrier like a slipstream of stars”
Ya know, stuff like that.
Sometimes, if I’m stuck while writing and need a thought, I look at the plot and think up complications for my characters to face. That’s how I figured out how to make Lithium 100% more plot relevant. I thought, okay, so she has this role right now, what can I add to make her stand in the way of X plan while also being an asset to Y? And boom, idea generated and problem solved.
6. What do you use to keep all your writing on? (Scrivener, Google Docs, good old pen and paper…)
I use Scrivener for all my main writing. I have a ton of phone memo notes for ideas on the go. I have a notebook full of random stuff for when I’m blocked and need to hand write something.
I also answered this further down!
7. What gave you initial inspiration for your WIP(s)?
H2H: There was a publisher who had a call for shapeshifter stories, and then I missed the deadline so I decided to try for a zine instead, then I got rejected, so I made it into my own thing.
AOPC: I needed to flesh out a piece of my homebrew DnD world, so I started worldbuilding, then it was my turn to turn in a story to be workshopped in my writing class, so I wrote a thing set in the village about the tribe and it all spiraled out from there.
FF: I had an errant thought about the script that hero and villain stories follow and wrote a thing about what would happen if one of them decided to deviate from it and BOOM the plot hit me like a semi truck.
Almost all of my short stories start with a sentence I think sounds really cool, a tone I want to try to capture (ex. the feeling of standing inside an old cathedral), or the ending moment of a character arc (I tend to work backwards).
8. How long have you been working on your WIP(s)?
I’ve been working with Heart to Heart since November 2018. I started thinking about Fish Food like 3 months ago I think? And I got the idea for All Our Painted Colors 3ish years ago, but it started as a short story that I thought about expanding about 8 months ago.
My writing process starts with a long period of thought percolation before I write anything definitive down.
9. What was the first thing you came up with for your WIP(s)?
H2H: The fact that the main character is an apothecary who uses recipes from historical documents to brew things and lives in a small town, and that their love interest changes shapes in some way.
AOPC: That the tribe is a society based around body paint, art, preserving their personal history, and stories. But mostly paint.
FF: The hero danging over a pit of hungry piranhas and asking the villain a question that throws off the whole “death threat” vibe.
10. Have you considered Hogwarts houses for your characters? If so, what are they?
Answered this for the H2H cast here.
As for the Fish Food cast:
Iron Will - Hufflepuff
Overseer - Ravenclaw
Nightmare - A Hufflepuff who asked to be in Slytherin and the hat said “yeah okay”
Lithium - Gryffindor
Babylon - Slytherin
Sparkplug - Gryffindor
11. What do you find easiest to write? (Description, dialogue, etc.)
Interiority! Free indirect discourse! Unvoiced character brain thoughts! Which I guess means description?
Writing dialogue sucks old car tires!
Tumblr media
@azawrites‘ Questions:
what’s the best part about your writing style? I like how I build up to emotional punches. It’s like walking up a ramp, but in a literary way. And at the top of the ramp you either get a gut punch of feels or an ice cream cone.
do you write on the computer or on paper? I do most of my writing on my laptop because my hands can’t write fast enough to keep up with my brain. My typing is way faster. If I’m having trouble getting an idea down, or the tone of the writing lends itself to being handwritten (idk how to describe this, but sometimes words just gotta be scribbled, ya know?), I’ll hand write it in pen. I don’t use pencils anymore because I wasn’t allowed to in college and it kinda stuck.
what are your favourite books and why? Oh, no, there are too many. So I’ll just say my top book: The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien because of how it deals with stories and grief and remembering, the fact that it’s a story cycle (which is very cool), and the way he writes - it’s beautiful and sad and messed up and poignant. I love it.
why did you start writing? I’ve answered this before, but there was never really starting point for me. It’s just something I’ve always done.
why did you continue writing? Because I had too much fun to stop! I also get creatively constipated, I guess is how I would phrase it, and need to have some sort of narrative outlet or my brain gets really mad at me.
where do you usually write? Pretty much anywhere, but most often at my desk. I think I need a taller chair, though...
can you describe your favourite piece (written by you) in one sentence? Let’s get authory with this one: The teacher hands out the tests, multiple choice this time, but when the stapled packet slides across your desk, there’s something odd about it, something that brings the war to life inside your head, a long-forgotten voice that speaks the souls of the soldiers and tells their stories from the annals of history. Or: A multiple choice test about WWII that tells the story of 4 men from Company B from enlistment to the end of their campaign.
what’s one cliche/trope you overuse, but still like anyway? It’s a trope when it comes to my own writing, actually. Person Sits Alone in the Dark and Contemplates. I love it, I abuse the hell out of it, and I will never stop.
what music do you listen to when working on a WIP? Depends. I have a go-to Writing Flow State song, playlists to help me get in the right head space when writing certain characters, and playlists that help guide the tone of a story. I can never listen to movie or video game scores because the association of song and cinematic moment is too strong for me.
have you ever dreamed of a fictional character? Uh, I have the occasional nightmare about Kokopelli? Does that count?
what’s one thing that makes you automatically dislike a book? Overly pretentious first person POV prose (and I don’t mean purple. I mean a character who - honestly and without a hint of satire - thinks like a writer from the 1920s who just discovered what “paid by the word” means and believes they’re the wisest human being in the universe and everyone who doesn’t agree with them is the basest of idiots - barf). Gratuitous female violence. The use of the word “loins” outside of an animal context. Everything about The Beginners by Rebecca Wolff.
Tumblr media
@inexorableblob‘s Questions:
Which of your characters could you write as twice their current age? Oh, man, I think writing Iron Will in his forties or fifties would be really cool. It’d certainly give the story a new commentary twist.
Which of your characters could you write as half their current age? (I’m not gonna cheat and say Mel, I promise.) I think writing a 30yo Treena would be very cool. However, writing a 13 or 14yo Lithium who is just learning how to use her super powers would be WILD.
What big city would your characters do best in?  London?  New York? Tokyo?  Mexico City?  Rio? The Fish Food characters would all do best in New York or London, since they’re very close to Conover. Lithium would prefer Rio, though, and Babylon would lobby for everyone to move to Tokyo.  The H2H characters would do best in Mexico City or London, depending on who decides to take charge and teach everyone the local customs.
What would your characters do if they were in a small rural community that was attacked by underground worms? This is giving me too many ideas for H2H. Gemma would be a little bit furious, since she hates having to get rid of animals, especially when they’re invasive. If the worms just minded their own gosh dang business then everyone could live in peace.  If we’re talkin’ normal sized worms, like worm-sized worms, then Gemma would develop a pesticide that wouldn’t kill them, but force them to the surface where they would then be stunned by whatever weird solution Mel comes up with. Then the town would have a Worm-Off, where the person who collects the most worms wins free pie for a year, courtesy of Harry’s.  If we’re talkin’ DnD-style Purple Worms, like Beetlejuice worms, then Mel would take over. She’d help organize an evacuation and steal Oz’s gun, just in case. Then she’d do some spoilery things with Gemma assisting.
What is the worst place where you’ve ever wanted to write? Probably while I was taking the math section of the SATs. Kinda inconvenient, brain, thanks for that. Other terrible places: mid job interview, in the middle of an empty street at midnight, anywhere I’m sitting where I have terrible posture, watching a slam poetry event in a very crowded bar, etc.
What’s the most uncomfortable subject you’ve ever written about? I’ve written a little bit about hate crimes and loathed every second. I’ve written a character actively contemplating suicide (he was a WWII soldier) and that was not fun at all. I mean, I also wrote a paper about sexy (somewhat graphic) wlw poetry for my Sexuality class, which a lot of people would be uncomfortable with, but I thought it was a very good collection. Go read Marilyn Hacker’s stuff, it’s good.
If you had to change the ending of any famous novel, which would you pick? The Great Gatsby. We don’t end with the green light, screw the green light.  Gatsby wills all of his possessions and wealth to Nick and Nick becomes the next James Gatz. But this time around, he pines for the man who was killed in the pool just below his balcony while pretending to love Jordan, who finds out and amicably marries him because 1920s. She then uses Nick/Gatsby’s money to purchase an automobile manufacturing company and makes cars in every color but yellow. (Gotta maintain that color symbolism for F. Scott, I guess.) Nick discovers Gatz’ old bootlegging and illegal activities buddies and starts up a criminal empire. He and Jordan become the biggest, queerest, most spiteful and angsty crime bosses in New York. Nick makes it his life’s mission to take down false accusers, vigilante style. The car manufacturing company is what they use to launder money. Daisy divorces Tom because they’re both terrible people. Daisy takes her daughter and moves to California. Jordan sends Daisy’s daughter money secretly, about a hundred dollars a month. The last line is something about how Gatz was always reaching out and chasing green, but because of him, Nick is steeped in dark, bloody red. I would then write a sequel about Nick and Jordan and their crime empire that spans the East Coast. God, I hate this book.
If you had to change your life, what would you change without regret? Start therapy way earlier, 100%. That would have saved me a lot of nonsense.
If the end of the world where scheduled a week from tomorrow, what would you do?  Would you tell anybody? Everybody?  Keep it a secret? Assuming this was legit and the end of the world was actually happening, I’d probably try to tell some big-shot geologist or something, hoping they spread the word. Other than that, since debt won’t be a thing, I’d take the people I love on a killer trip around the world.
What would you do if a wizard offered to cast one spell for you, but your worst enemy got the same spell? Hmmm. I’d ask them to cast the Self-Realization spell, so they would instantly become aware of the effect their actions have on others and know exactly how terrible they’ve been to other people their whole life. Maybe then they can be a better person. My anxiety makes this spell ineffective on me, since it’s already there! Thanks, brain!
Which would you choose, never eating in the same place, always eating the same meal, always eating with the same people, or never eating with the same people? I’d choose always eating with the same people. I like frequenting restaurants I like and eating different things. I don’t think I could deal with only eating the same thing/off the same menu forever. And I have bad social anxiety, so constantly eating with new people would probably short-circuit my brain eventually.  A good meal in good company is pretty great, though.
Tumblr media
@sunlight-and-starskies‘ Questions:
What is your favorite genre of music? I’ll always be a rock fan at heart. Right now, I really like folk rock and any kind of music that sounds like it has history behind it.
What are your favorite words? Illustrious, shimmer, soliloquy, incarnate, bound, and many more. Also most Yiddish curses.
Describe your ideal vacation. Somewhere cozy where I can explore and chill at my leisure. A week of artsy events in the city. Exploring landscapes in the country.
If you could have any fictional creature for a pet, what would it be? Why? Pegasus! I can ride and they can fly. We’d make an excellent team, and where we’d go, we wouldn’t need roads.
Which fictional universe would you live in if you had to live there for the rest of your life? Logic dictates the Star Trek universe, since I’d probably be an average civilian. Post-scarcity society? Sign me the hell up. My heart, however, is screaming ROHAN.
Favorite childhood toy? Uh... I honestly can’t remember.
What is your aesthetic? Good smelling old books with doodles and notes in the margins, a pile of unfolded clean clothes on a chair, a stack of handwritten papers perched on the corner of a desk, the smell of breakfast cooking when you wake up, the immediate “woops” shock the moment you trip over something you should’ve moved earlier.
Tell me a random fact about your current project or you. About me: I have a birthmark that kinda sorta looks like an elephant. About Fish Food: The Coalition knows what happened to Hydrophase. So does Sparkplug.
Are you an early bird or a night owl? Night owl, all the way. I like the idea of being a morning person, though.
What is your favorite food? Pasta! Or any kind of Asian food.
What is your happiest memory? Oh, geez. Ummm. When I was little, I would curl up in my grandpa’s armchair and eat Burger King breakfast sandwiches on Saturday mornings.

Do you have any idea how much I love your metas? I wish I could write metas like you. Any tips if I want to write more and better metas?
Gosh, Anon, I legit had to take a moment. Thank you so much!
I don’t know if I can actually give useful tips, my metas are mostly me… rambling, y’know. If you’re hesitant to share your metas/don’t know where to start tho:
don’t it’s a productivity hazard i’m supposed to study for exams and i’m not getting shit done because i spend way too much time here run while you can
Just go for it. For real don’t sweat it, we all have interesting things to share. You’re bringing your own personal light & perspective to a fandom and that’s rad.
A basic structure helps make your point clearer & can help you get started, but don’t get a headache over it. It’s informal writing after all.
You’re probs already doing it but read meta from as many users as possible with as many different opinions as possible. Agree, disagree, add your own thoughts; you’re already meta-ing. Also look how they construct their interpretation & argument.
& a few things I have in mind when putting my thoughts down:
Stuff that can guide your analysis: what the story is telling, how it’s being told, why the writer chose to tell it that way and not another.
Whether your opinion’s based on an objective or a subjective element, determine why said element holds significance to you, and how it impacted your interpretation. More than your conclusion, your reasoning is interesting.
In the same vein, try to understand where your opinion on what you read comes from. Find out: why do I think that? What appeals/bothers me here? What appeal/faults could other people find that I don’t instinctively? How would’ve I written that if I were the writer? How did my bias impact the way I received the story? Deconstruct your own thought process.
Illustrate & reference. Be as specific as possible when referring to a canon event, ideally down to the issue number. Firstly, well, so that we know what you’re basing yourself on– which is particularly useful to new comics fans trying to differentiate canon from the headcanons/personal interpretations that float around. Secondly so that people can find the issue easily, (re)read it if needed, and see for themselves if they actually agree with your point or not. Handing your readers the tools you used to build your opinion facilitates debate.
Writer framing & agenda are as important as the actual content. What the writer wants you to feel is as important as what the story actually makes you feel. Especially when reading comics.
This deserves its own post so shoot me an ask if you want me to elaborate, but long story short: Starlin wants us to judge Jason as incompetent/reckless rather than sympathize with him; on the contrary Dixon wants us to sympathize with Tim & to relate with him; Nicieza wants us to see Tim as more competent than his peers; etc. How do they convince you, the reader, to see their way?
When writing we use various formal and narrative tools to make our story convincing. If you’re extra conscious of which tool is used and how, it can bring a new depth to your interpretation and thus to your metas.
Seriously just go for it. I’m not an authority on the subject & I don’t know what I’m doing any more than you do; I just ramble away. If people are interested in my thoughts they’ll be interested in yours. I know I am.
Idk if it helps? I hope it helps. Thanks a lot for the ask & your kind words!
