hey I just saw your post about PCOS being a hormonal issue not a gyno one while I was surfing the tag. I was diagnosed a couple months back and all my gyno did was a 2 min ultrasound and then prescribed me birth control. I would like to have actual help and more info on it but I'm not sure who I'm supposed to go to for that. Seeing as you were in a similar situation I'd appreciate your help.
seems like gynos really suck with pcos, don't they? 🥴 warning you now, this is going to be a very long post, because i'm essentially writing out absolutely everything i did and everything i've learned, so strap in for a ride aldksfjasldf
the first thing to do is research, research, research. i spent a whole week constantly on pcos websites (such as pcosaa and this article, tho fair warning, the article does use academic speech so it might not be the easiest thing to read) and watching videos and doing what i could to inform myself. the way you can know if you're looking at a credible resource is how the source defines pcos: does it pose it as a reproductive system disorder? or an endocrine (hormonal) disorder? if it talks about it as a reproductive system disorder, then it's probably wrong.
please note that i am not, obviously, a medical professional, but this is how i understand pcos works. i'll use me as an example just so i can use first person perspective, but it applies to pcos patients in general.
so, my cells are insulin resistant. that means that when i eat, my body releases, lets say, 100 (x measurement) of insulin. because my cells are insulin resistant, they say "hey, i'm only gonna use 50x of that insulin". but they still NEED that 100x to function. so my body releases ANOTHER 100x of insulin, so my cells go "ok i'll take 50x" and so while my cells now have the 100x they're supposed, to i now have 100x insulin floating around.
that extra insulin not only wreaks havoc on many systems of the body, it is the reason why most people with pcos that goes untreated end up with type 2 diabetes. the extra insulin is also converted (or spurs the creation of? i'm not entirely certain on the how here) into testosterone and other androgen (male) hormones. so your body has too much insulin, and now it has too much testosterone, too. that extra testosterone is what fucks with your reproductive system and prevents the follicles on your ovaries from maturing (which is what the 'cysts' are). it also often creates increased facial hair, acne (especially on the 'beard line'), and worse body odor. between the testosterone and the insulin, it's nigh impossible to lose weight.
also note that because your body has to release more insulin for your cells to get an adequate amount, you likely crave carbs and sugars (salty/crunchy things and sweets), and you're likely frequently fatigued, bc your body isn't, well, working correctly and it's taking more energy to perform basic functions.
secondly, take all this information that you know to your doctor. i legitimately wrote down some notes about this process in a little notebook and took it with me so that i wouldn't forget/get too anxious to bring any of it up. i also wrote down the things i had been doing to help up to that point (working out, what my diet was, etc etc) and what i was concerned about. lastly, i also wrote down what medications and supplements i had heard of in my research to see what my doctor thought of them.
my doctor's first 'attack' choice is ozempic--it's a weekly shot that helps to regulate insulin levels and also is pretty good at helping weight loss. be aware though that most commercial insurances don't pay for this, but if your doctor is good, they'll try to work around that so that you're not paying a frankly outrageous amount for it. also look out for sometime this fall, my doc said that the ozempic manufacturers are trying to get ozempic approved for weight loss (it's approved for other things) and that should help bring the price down?? anyway, that's my doc's preferred method, but because of my finances, we currently can't do that.
his second attack, which i'm now on, is metformin. it's a medication mostly used for diabetics that helps with blood sugar levels which, again, is that insulin issue. my mom has been on it for 14 years bc diabetes runs in our family anyway, so it's perfectly safe for long time use and definitely helps with keeping either away from or within the pre-diabetes phase. again, i've only been on it now two days so i can't say anything for me but we'll see how it goes lmao
he also approved of me using omega 3 (fish pills) supplements because they help balance things out in general, not just pcos, and he was good with me using spearmint, too. i'm starting out on one cup of spearmint tea a day and see how that effects me, but i've heard of people having up to two spearmint supplement pills and a cup of spearmint tea a day, too. spearmint is a 'defense', as far as i can explain it: it has (tho limited) research that it lowers the testosterone levels in women with pcos. so while it doesn't help with the insulin so it doesn't attack the source, it can help with the testosterone aspect, aka facial hair, acne, etc. i've also heard of cinnamon supplements and inositol supplements helping, but i didn't get a chance to ask about either of those from my doctor, so make sure if you want to give those a try, you talk about them and make sure they won't interfere with any of your other medications and get your doctor's approval on them, first.
thirdly, ask about what else you can do to help yourself. my doctor stressed the importance of a proper night's sleep, as well as advised to try to cut back on carbs and sugars (IMPORTANT NOTE: some people claim that you HAVE to be on a keto diet to get results with pcos. WRONG. please don't do this. keto diets are entirely unsustainable. and cutting back on carbs and sugars does not mean cutting them OUT, it just means if you want a snack, try reaching for a protein or a vegetable instead of a carb. but don't limit yourself!! please, be conscious about what you eat, and remember that sometimes yeah, a slice of cake or a serving of chips isn't going to kill you or set your pcos back. don't risk getting an e.d. just for the sake of your pcos). he also told me that the best exercise that i personally should do is either HIIT exercises or cardio, and to do at least an hour a day, even if it's 30 mins in the morning, 30 in the evening--and to work up to that so even doing ten minutes a day, then increasing it from there, is healthier and better than jumping straight into a whole ass hour. he also told me to aim for a certain heartrate. i don't remember the formula he used, but for me at 22 (based on age) he wanted me to try to aim for 150-160 bpm. again, especially with exercise, that was what he recommended for me. you're likely different from me, so ask your doctor and see what he says.
fourthly, and perhaps most importantly, DON'T BOTHER WITH A GYNO. all of this that i've gotten done for me was from my family doctor, so just the guy i go to for yearly check ups. see if you can do some routine blood work to give him (or her) as wide of a picture as possible, and then go in and talk with a regular doctor about this. a friend of mine also has a friend who actually goes to an endocrinologist to get her pcos sorted out, so that's also an option. gynos seem to just treat the symptoms; birth control gives you a regular period by helping with your estrogen, but that doesn't decrease your testosterone OR do anything with the insulin. my doc is keeping me on birth control pills just so that i have a regular cycle so we can watch and see if anything else happens to it, so it's okay to stay on the birth control, but ultimately, birth control pills don't do anything for pcos.
i know it's difficult and probably kinda scary/anxiety inducing if you're younger or just have anxiety, but you've gotta advocate for yourself in this case. you have to show the doctor that you know what you're talking about and that you're able to call him out on his bullshit if he doesn't take you seriously. also, if your doctor is helpful, don't be afraid to be frank with him about what your gyno did. like i've said with my experience, i got the validation of knowing that my gyno was wrong by explaining to my doctor how he treated me. you deserve better than what your gyno did, and you deserve to actually be treated as a person and your disorder be taken seriously.

alright everyone. i'm about to share with you a diet that is super easy to stick to and actually yields results.
now, just a disclaimer, this may not be as fast/extreme as some of you would like, but i can guarantee you all that this pace allows you to be consistent and prevents you from constantly falling into a binge cycle.
within a month of starting this meal plan, i have lost 13lbs. that is an average of 3.5lbs a week.
average daily intake: 800 calories
BREAKFAST
EVERY morning, i drink a profast chocolate shake. they're sold at a local metabolic weight loss center, and they are admittedly pricey, but they are definitely worth it. if you can find a similar/cheaper substitute, even better.

i play lacrosse for my school, meaning i exercise roughly 4-5 days a week. practice extends for 2 hours, while games last 50 min, plus our 1 hour warm-ups.
i'm definitely not saying you NEED to pick up a sport in order to do well, but i am telling you that being obligated to teammates and a coach really pushes me to workout every weekday, and prevents me from excusing myself from exercising.
before practice every day, our team runs 1 mile together, with the average pace being 6.5mph. at my weight, 150lbs, that burns me roughly 100 calories.
during actual practice, we do a lot of jogging/sprinting throughout all of the drills, but we also wait in lineups and whatnot, so when i calculate my burned calories in myfitnesspal, i always underestimate the time of my workout. instead of logging 2 hours of lacrosse, i typically log 35 minutes, which burns 320 calories for me. i'd rather underestimate than overestimate.
for those of you that are not committed to a sport: i highly recommend purchasing the p90x package. once my lacrosse season ends, i will be turning to that as my form of exercise. p90x provides a great workout plan for those who are specifically looking to become lean, rather than bulky, while still building defined muscle. i'm pretty sure the average p90x workout burns around 450 calories, and if you pair that with a mile run, that'll give you a total of -550 calories a day.
PLEASE do not skip this aspect of the diet— if you think you can just create a calorie deficit without implementing some form of exercise and strength training, you are not going to get the results that you want. yes, you will lose weight. but that weight will be a combination of fat AND muscle.
the more muscle you have, the higher your BMR is, simply because it requires more energy to maintain muscle than fat. in addition, having muscle will make you look much more toned rather than flabby/one-dimensional. i promise you that you will not bulk up like a body-builder if you eat protein or workout. instead, you're going to achieve a flat stomach/abs and toned arms/legs. the only way you would bulk up is if you eat a caloric surplus, so you have nothing to worry about.
ADDITIONAL POINTERS
cut out oils. this is so so important— oils contain way too much fat and way too many calories. your body needs to be using the fat it already has for energy, not new sources of fat that you put into your body
the macronutrients ratio: 50% protein, 30% carbohydrates, 20% fat. you want to really boost your protein intake in order to repair your muscles after working out. carbohydrates also provide your body easily-accessible energy, but a majority of those carbs should come from vegetables.
NO fruit. fruit contains way too much sugar and while they do contain fiber, you can do without them.
NO grains. grains, such as pasta and bread, are extremely high in calories and, honestly, do not really keep you full. i understand eating a bagel right before an extreme workout in order to get some energy, but grains really do not provide much sustenance and i highly suggest you do not indulge.

avoiding a binge. i actually keep a list of foods in my notes app. it features a ton of meals/snacks that i am dying to indulge in. for some reason, it helps me. also, try to remind yourself that the primitive part of your brain is fueling your irrational cravings, but your advanced brain is control of your motor functions. YOU are in control of whether or not you grab snacks and feed yourself, NOT your cravings.

I drink coffee in the morning, which probably also helps, but I also drink it with a half-cup of heavy cream, and no matter what, that really helps keeps hunger at bay. When you’re hungry, you should always drink a glass of water and wait a short period. The signals your brain sends for hunger and thirst are close to each other and occasionally get crossed, so you will sometimes feel hungry when you’re actually thirsty. I think this has something to do with blood sugar and/or the addictive nature of carbohydrates.

it's been hardwired how we fear hunger into us that we need to meet a three-meal-a-day standard when in actuality three legit meals a day, puts most of us far in to a caloric surplus. I get a low blood sugar hunger around 10 am every morning, and I challenge myself to let it pass, which only takes 5 minutes, without consuming anything. The body has ways of regulating blood sugar in the absence of caloric intake. Being hungry is a normal feeling that doesn't need to be instantly remedied and most of the time you're just thirsty. Make sure you are eating enough overall
Your hunger not being regulated can mean it’s very suppressed which is common in the beginning, this might mean you are under-eating. Lots of people find that simply can’t eat enough in first couple months because their hunger is so suppressed. When I was eating a lot of carbs, hunger felt like something that had to be taken care of right now. It felt like if I didn't take care of it with a snack instantly, it was the end of the world.
Hunger on Keto doesn't feel so desperate.
It's like I'm being made aware, but it's more like my body is telling me that it's something I need to take care of it when I could. High-carb diets where you're filling up on mostly carbs and vegetable oil,  you end up really hungry even after eating and so you have to eat until you're practically sick just to feel some kind of satiety. Then, it gets even worse when you start thinking of food as a scarce resource -- you know you're going to be horribly hungry in a few hours so you make sure not to skip any meals and you try to get as much food as possible in during your meals. How i broke my plateau and lost 7kg in a month
Hi, by now you should know I am that girl who lost 62kg and standing tall at 1.81m. But today, I am going to share with you how I broke my plateau, lost the 7kg and reached my goal weight at 78kg. All this was possible with the help of the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. It’s really not as hard as you think.

What is a Ketogenic Diet?

What is intermittent fasting?

Why Ketogenic Diet and intermittent fasting?
I first heard of this diet online and how intimidating it can be. I put it off for as long as I can remember, until my friend tried it and lost weight within 2 weeks without exercise. I decided to take the plunge after trips to KL, Cebu and Taiwan in March, which left me at a weight of 86kg. Yes, binging on lots food/potato chips has a price.

I decided on this after extensive research and tried it out for a month. My weight has pretty much fluctuated within the range of 83-85kg since January this year and it can be quite frustrating. The day I started the diet I weighed in at 85kg. After a month, I weighed in at 78kg. YAY!

How did I do it?
For the first 2 weeks I did daily meal preps with my sisters. It was unsustainable to say the least. Usually, you psych yourself up during the first 2 weeks of starting a diet so much that you don’t mind trying anything just to achieve your goals. But towards the end of the two weeks, I found myself throwing away leftovers of unfinished meal preps, because eating the same food every day eventually takes its toll.
From the third week, I decided to do some research on Keto-approved foods that required minimal preparation effort.

Meals that I usually have on a keto diet:
Indonesian Grill ($6-$8) – I like going to the one at Plaza Singapura’s food court. I’ll just replace the rice with veggies. A tasty and fulfilling meal.

Subway’s Salad ($10-$14) – Typically with avocado, teriyaki chicken, egg mayo and ranch sauce. Tasty and can add up to around 600 calories. The cost depends on the kind of ingredients you put in. Essentially, it’s paying for the convenience instead of having to make the salad yourself.
Cold storage salad ($5.99) – Baby spinach base with eggs, 2x broccoli, cheese, honey ham with Caesar sauce.
Hard Rock cafe - Smokehouse salad (i had it when i was in KL, it was the best oh my god)

Roasted pork belly ($5 onwards) – now this is my favorite. I regularly visit this store at one of the hawker centers at Bugis.

Western food ($5 onwards) - Chicken chop, salmon steak. I replace the fries and coleslaw with broccoli, veggies or eggs, whichever they can offer me.
Economic Rice stores ($3 onwards) – Just choose any 3-4 ingredients without rice.
Fish soup ($4 onwards) – add fish, egg, or whatever you feel like. (this is one of the best i have eaten, from whampoa food centre)

I will make cauliflower fried rice with laksa sauce which you can easily find in NTUC. And grilled chicken thigh meat to go along with it.

I get spinach from NTUC to make my own salad. Egg mayo, bacon, sliced avocado and Caesar sauce. YUM!
Fried egg with bacon- add cheese if you like to on anything. Just make sure your cheese is not processed.
Snacks I usually have:
Macadamia, cashew nuts
Cream cheese
Full cream milk
I cooked all my food with olive oil.
Tips while on Ketogenic Diet:
-          Drink lots of water
-          Have food that are high in sodium.
-          Apple cider vinegar with lemon (disgusting I know but the benefits are endless)
-          Take care of your skin if you are going to lose weight this fast you got to be hardworking for your skin too. Scrubs and lotions girls!
That’s about it, I pretty much lived on these foods for a month and have since lost 7kg. After being off the diet, and countless of cheat days, my weight has stabilized at 79kg.
Speaking of cheat days, I didn’t have any while I was on this diet. Not because I was torturing myself, but because I didn’t have any cravings. You may have a cheat day every week if you want, however it will kick you out of ketosis and you will need to start over the next day. I recommend a cheat day once every two weeks, also known as refuel days. You can have carbs on those days, but try to limit it as best you can.
 What to avoid while on a Ketogenic Diet?
-          Anything that contains sugar, whether artificial or not
-          Fruits and vegetables that are high in sugar content. The only exceptions are raspberry and blueberry
-          Rice, brown rice, noodles, quinoa anything that are high are carbs

It’s just 28 days. Not that hard right?
How was my experience overall?
First thought, it freaking works! 
I was previously on a low carb diet before, but I didn’t realize that the amount of fruits I was having was way too much sugar going into my body. I’ll be honest with you, it wasn’t easy for me to give up fruits. After the first three days, my sister’s weight started dropping but mine didn’t. I was a little demoralized. A week later after keto flu, I have lost 2kg. I exercise regularly but my sisters didn’t. Their weight dropped anyway. Afterwards, I don’t feel hungry anymore. Maybe it was because of the high amount of fat intake that kept me full.
If you want to be successful doing keto diet, you have to get through the first seven days.
For me the real challenge came when I ate my first pack of chips after I reached my goal weight. I couldn’t stop! Carbs makes me crave for more carbs. Now, self-control is very important. I cleaned up my diet after a few days of binging and things got back to normal.
Was it sustainable?
For a month or two yes, after that you got to watch your food intake after you are off it. After all if you have an ice cream a day with 2500 calorie intake the weight is bound to come back. No diet like this is sustainable in the long run. Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting is a lifestyle change and once you have gone through it, it will teach you things that you didn’t know about your body. From then on you can change to paleo diet or alternatively eat in moderation like i do now. 
After thoughts
After having gone through many different kind of diets, the only effective diet is the one that you can sustain and stick to. Eat in moderation and be mindful of your macros and you are good to go.
The Ketogenic diet is good for those who wants to get slim within a short period of time. it’s amazing because you don’t need to be on any pills or meal replacement. 
I will experiment is soon again to see if I can reach 75kg. I’ll update you guys!
PS: before you start any diet please please understand your body and do not go overboard with cutting calories, it will do more harm then good. stick to 1500 calories a day and within a month i am sure you will see results. 
You didn’t gain the weight overnight, don’t expect to lose it over night. Give it time, be patient.
