you and daichi have been best friends since your first year of high school. now that you're in love (and adults) where will you go from here?
pairing: sawamura daichi x reader
wc: 3,373 words
contains: seemingly unrequited love, confessions, covers the nationals arc, friends to lovers, angst, hurt/comfort towards the end, fluff, reader literally has a breakdown and daichi comforts them, reassurance, cuddles, petnames (baby, princess, doll)
a/n: no, i didn't have any idea how to tag this. this fic is a little all over the place and there are several timeskips. the reader is implied to have issues w family and friends so keep that in mind lol. also i marked diff sections of the fic with ✨ this emoji so if u want to skip over certain parts and go straight to the hurt/comfort feel free babey

you were used to being lonely. sure, you worked hard and you had dreams, but there was some part you that remained unfulfilled. it was like a void that gradually dragged you down. you'd managed to supress it for most of your life up until high school, until all of a sudden something changed.
you met sawamura daichi. he was cute, a first year player on the volleyball team. daichi was kind to you. the two of you became fast friends after meeting on the first day at karasuno. during your breaks in between classes the pair of you would talk about anything and everything- volleyball strategies, your latest sketches, even other classmates that were giving you a hard time. you could be silly with daichi. there was no pressure with him, no need to pretend to be perfect.
but there was something scary about this too. by your second year of school you'd been friends with daichi for about a year. it was then that the realization hit- you had never felt this safe, this accepted, or... this loved by another person. when you'd get anxious because of classes or have issues with your family daichi became a shoulder for you to lean on. he'd go out of his way to send you check up texts and leave you little handwritten notes. the first one that you received was a little post-it note that said "you'll do great on your test today! i believe in you- daichi." he'd blushed like crazy when you confronted him about it. it was new to see your usually sturdy and level-headed best friend blush over a silly note that he'd left. there was something different between the two of you after that first note. instead of walking you home like usual he started to keep a hand on the small of your back.
you hadn't been looking. you'd been talking about how awkward your family was when a stray cat slunked into front of the two of you. you almost walked straight into it before the cat bounded away, crossing the empty street and looking back once to meow at daichi and you.
"sorry, is that too much? i just... want to make sure that you don't trip."
you were confused until you realized what had happened. daichi had steadied you by putting his hand on the small of your back. it felt good, for some reason, to trust him to steady you. trust wasn't an easy thing to come by.
you smiled a tad awkwardly before steadying yourself on your own two feet. "not at all daichi. i don't mind."
daichi smiled and the pair of you kept walking. his hand had stayed where it had been. you felt... guilty for being so touch-starved. and for your best friend, of all people?
"how ridiculous" you thought to yourself. when you came home you knew that no one was there. time to start dinner before your family came home. you'd probably retreat to your room and text daichi when that happened.
daichi was so good and so nice, and by your third year of high school the tiny, lingering bit of attraction that you had had for him flourished into a full-blown crush. you felt embarrassed and guilty. never had you let someone get this close to you. never had you ever let anyone write you notes, check in on you, give you genuine-sounding compliments. it was the little things like "are you okay y/n? you seemed a little quiet this morning. are you getting enough sleep?"
graduation came and went. the notion of parting with daichi and your other friends- asahi, suga, and kiyoko- left a pang of grief in your stomach. you were attending a local university and daichi planned to join miyagi's fire department after nationals. you'd still be close to him and he'd still be living at home, but it was weird to think that you'd be seeing one another a lot less.
nationals was when everything boiled over. you'd promised daichi that you'd be in the stands at every game of the competition, cheering him on.
"id love it if you were there, don't get me wrong. but don't feel like you have to jump through hoops for me! it's a bit of a long trip, i don't want you tiring yourself out." he confesses sheepishly. but you really wanted to go- his mom and siblings couldn't because of school and work, but they'd given him their best wishes.
"I'll hitch a ride with saeko and the crew. she and i work at the same restaurant on the weekends. we already talked and she said she'd be more than happy." you chirp. daichi seems a bit less worried about you after this, but then he remembers.
"um. y/n. you know that saeko drives... well, not badly, just... scarily?" he only seems to be partially joking.
you laugh at his worried expression. "I'll be okay pal. we'll make one of saeko's taiko buddies take the wheel."
daichi mock sighs in relief and you laugh together. this was the last moment that daichi had before nationals where he wasn't laden with anticipation over whether karasuno would succeed or not. he felt relaxed, with you. he thought you were cute, and awkward sometimes, and smart, and... good. so good. you didn't always look to him like he was an authority figure and you were small. he didn't feel the pressure to make sure you behaved or kept you in line because you were good at putting up a front and keeping yourself "in order." sometimes daichi wished that you would let him take care of you, let him listen more often. he wished that you would let him love you.
oh.
oh shit.
"daichi? um, daichi?"
daichi blushed and was snapped back to reality. he... loved you? that's what that care for you was all of these years. that's why he wanted to know if you were taking care of yourself, if you weren't burning yourself out with pleasing your family and school and work. sure, he thought you were cute. he picked up on all of your idiosyncrasies, even sometime pointing them out to you. he had had an inkling that *maybe* he had a little crush on you... but the care that he had come to find that he had for you was so great. he had to do something- everyone was leaving for school and the championships would be over and then when would he see you again? there was this great, big fear of losing you due to confessing. but that fear was minuscule compared to you, his studious and independent friend, pushing him away and forgetting.
"sorry. i was just lost in thought."
yes, you, saeko, and the taiko group arrived a *tad* late and missed the tokonami match. yes you felt guilty for missing it. but when karasuno won against inarizaki and you saw daichi and the team celebrate the win, it was all worth it. you cheered as loud as you can, and once the players cleared from the court, you scrambled to greet daichi.
you see him in the lobby and almost leap into his arms. he laughs. "aaa, hey y/n." he croaks.
you giggle. "hey daichi. congratulations. you were amazing out there."
he's smiling through the sweat and fatigue. you notice, out of the corner of your eye, asahi and suga slowly backing away to leave the two of you alone. suga clicks his tongue, making daichi whip his head around, and he gives the captain a thumbs up." daichi sighs and sets you down, and the two of you are left in the stadium lobby. volleyball players and spectators mingle around, getting food and shopping for merchandise. daichi runs a hand through his hair and turns to you.
"do you want to go outside? there's something that i have to tell you."
anxiety shoots through you. if it's daichi, it can't be bad. of course not. that's one of your best friends. right?
the two of you make your way to the front doors of the stadium and get some fresh air. the sky is blue and the wind is refreshing against your skin. daichi, still sweaty and tired from his game, seems to enjoy it too.
you giggle as he stretches. daichi sits on a nearby bench and gestures for you to do so too. you notice a little shake in his hands as he does so. he's fiddling with the zipper of his karasuno jacket in that cute way that you know he does.
there's a sense of unease, and it's up to you to break the silence. you're alone with sawamura daichi, your best friend and longtime crush.
"daichi? what's wrong?" you ask, concerned.
daichi looks to you, a flush on his cheeks and a light in his eyes. he looks so cute, even when he's tongue-tied and tired from a game.
he takes a deep breath, and the words come out.
"i like you a lot, y/n"
you blink, confused. then it hits you. your crush, sawamura daichi, likes you. like, the boy that you think about way too much, the boy that you feel safe with, the absolute gentleman who cares about you and respects you instead of walking all over you, likes you.
you realize that you haven't said anything before you stutter.
"i-i like you too, daichi. so much."
he's blushing. your face is growing hot despite the winter air. the two of you, literal adults, are reduced to awkward messes because of this confession.
"o-oh. that's... good. i think that that's good." daichi awkwardly says. he laughs a little, then it turns into a full-blown bellow. you can't help but laugh too at how ludicrous the situation is. two friends who have known each other for years, caring about each other, eventually falling for each other. who knew?
"also suga made a bet and told me to confess to you if we won against inarizaki. he told me after the tokonami match. i agreed." daichi huffs after the laughter subsides.
"of course he did. im glad that he did it though." you joke.
"yeah. because then i wouldn't have you." he smiles, getting up. he extends a hand to you, helping you from the bench
"let's go back to the group. i don't want to miss lunch."
it's been months after nationals. you and daichi are in a relationship, happy to be with one another. he's taken you on so many wonderful dates and his family seems to love getting to know you more. but there's still something that's missing. you've always struggled to open up to people completely. even daichi doesn't know what you're like when you completely break.
that changes one day when you have to travel from your dorm, to your parents house, then to daichi's for a date. it was supposed to be casual- just you and him in your pajamas, watching movies and eating takeout. but after being berated by your family for your career choice it triggered something in you. you felt like a little kid again, being told that you're not enough, being slowly manipulated by your family into burning yourself out. dachi helped the loneliness subside, but you knew that, inside, you were still the same little kid. that thought made something inside you recoil, but you pushed it down and made your way to daichi's.
you settle into his bed, your partner beside you. you take a good look at him- your man, sturdy and stronger from work at the fire department. suddenly, you can't help but break for some reason. tears flood your eyes and they won't stop for some reason.
"baby? baby what's wrong?"
you didn't deserve him. why were you even friends with him? someone this nice, this gentle with you, this kind? you wanted him to kick you out for crying. you wanted him to break up with you, because good things don't last.
you were so embarrassed and you'd felt so weak and stupid. you'd never been allowed to cry before, you'd always been told that it was a sign of weakness. good children didn't cry, so now that you were grown up you shouldn't either.
daichi hadn't judged you. he just set the tv remote down and moved in to hug you. other people's touches usually made you flinch and swat them away, but it was never like that with him. not when he supported the small of your back when you fell, not when you jumped into his arms, not when he took your hand after your mutual confession.
the two of you were hugging now, your chin on his shoulder and his head tucked into your side. you could stay like this forever. he was so warm. you could feel the two of your heartbeats almost sinking into one as your sobs quieted down and your breathing slowed to normal. this was the effect that he had on you. it was in this moment that you realized that you loved him- you truly did. the brown-eyed, sturdy, kind, careful, gentle boy that you'd met on the first day of high school had become your friend. then he was your crush. now that you two were adults, he was your first partner. the first person that you had ever fallen truly, deeply in love with.
you felt weak for desiring a love that was this tender. pessimistic you has you thinking that maybe all of the bad things that happened when you were growing up- your family being distant, friends leaving, you feeling alone all of the time- were a sign. a sign that you didn't deserve love. but if you were undeserving, if the pessimistic side of you was right, maybe you could have this moment to keep instead. is that it? if a whirlwind kind of love was too much to ask, you could just keep these moments with daichi close to your heart. if it was possible to take this feeling and keep it in a bottle, you would.
in between sobs, you vent.
"everything sucks, daichi. my family has always been so critical of me. i never get to see any of our friends anymore. im trying to succeed at school but my family won't get off my back. i feel so alone."
daichi pulls away to look at you. his palm is cupping your face and uses his thumb to wipe a tear away. you sniffle. you struggle to meet his beautiful brown eyes, averting your gaze. but you can feel his gaze on you, and when you do finally find the courage to make eye contact, he looks at you with nothing but affection. for some reason you don't feel judged by him. you don't feel... bad for crying in front of him anymore. he's looking at you with nothing but acceptance, nothing but care.
"hey." he starts in a small, gentle voice. "i know how you feel about crying, doll. but it's okay to cry. no matter what your parents say about you, you're a good person. a lovely person, even. you're a good friend too. what they think is stupid." he smiles a little. you love that smile- the way that his eyes crinkle a little and his cheeks dimple. he holds one of your hands in both of his. "i love you. you're good, and smart, and kind, and hardworking. you forget to take care of yourself sometimes, but i think that that's okay. while you're learning how to show yourself more compassion I'll take care of you in the meantime. whatever you need, doll. you're safe with me. no matter what. okay?"
you're crying again. great. you don't stop yourself this time and you throw yourself into his arms. he's there, waiting for you. you let yourself sob into his chest while he gently rubs your back. he holds you in his big, strong arms and hugs you closer. you don't feel suffocated and you don't feel humiliating to be crying. you feel safe. it sucks to cry over what your family thinks of you and it sucks that you don't feel like enough. it sucks that you've felt alone for most of your life. it sucks that you feel guilty for wanting love and it sucks that sometimes, you feel guilty for loving daichi so much. but as he holds you and presses a kiss to the top of your head, nuzzling your hair, all of the pain is tinged with something warm. something safe. something so, so safe. a feeling that you'd never felt before.
it's in that moment that you know- daichi isn't a whirlwind. he isn't a storybook prince that will whisk all of your problems away. no, he's somehow better. he's a pillar of support, a source of comfort, a prince in his own right. no, he won't save you- you still have to take care of yourself. but he'll support you, fill in the gaps, love you unconditionally. maybe a fix-it-all is too much to ask, but you couldn't care less about that now. all that you want his daichi. he takes care of you. he respects you. he loves you, despite your flaws and your feelings of weakness and those moments like now when you just need to be held. he loves you.
when you've stopped crying your voice is croaky and you feel gross. you look up at daichi and he hands you a box of tissues from the nightstand. you're an ugly crier, you know that. but daichi doesn't seem to judge as you dab at your eyes and look to check your reflection in his room mirror. it feels wrong to leave the comfort of his arms, but it also feels like instinct to check your composure. when you're done you turn around to face him, eyes tired.
"do you want to talk about it doll?" you're about to object, in a prefunctory sort of way, but he cuts in. "baby, i don't mind. really. i just want to know that you're okay. i just want to know that you feel safe. you've endured a lot and the way that you feel matters."
you sniffle. "im fine not talking for now daichi. im... tired. just tired. from crying. i just want to sleep." when he shows you nothing but understanding, you stutter out one last request
"ww-will you hold me?"
"of course, princess. ive got you."
you clamber back to bed. daichi and you shift positions so that he's laying down and you're against his chest. he smells like that nice, crisp soap that he always uses. you bury your face in his chest once more, before laying on your side to the sound of his heartbeat.
you sigh. "i love this sound. it lets me know that you're here with me. it let's me know that you're real."
daichi chuckles warmly. you can hear the sound reverberate throughout his chest and it tickles your ear. he's so sweet. it's then that he promises something to you.
"im here, darling. and i am not going anywhere."
your eyes water a little at that. "i love you, daichi. you're my best friend."
he sighs, and it's like you can feel his warm, gentle smile from where you're resting. "i love you too, doll. so much. you are the most precious thing in the world to me."
you know in that moment that you are loved- genuinely, indellibly loved. the roughness and loneliness that you once endured is no more. despite everything, you're learning how to love yourself and to take care of yourself. it feels so, so lonely sometimes and the work seems endless. but whenever you need someone to catch you when you fall, you know that your love, daichi, will be there. forevermore.
his heartbeat relaxes you as you snuggle deeper into his chest. the last words that the two of you utter to one another are ones of love before you both drift off to sleep. you love him- so, so much. and he loves you.

Helloooo~ um idk whether your drabble is this up for request but... Can I request #4 and #9 for Woojin thank youuuuuu
prompt: (4) soulmate au + (9) “Listen, I know it’s hard, but I’m not going anywhere.”
genre: fluff (with a dash of angst??? i hope i did it right)
summary: typical soulmate au where ur soulmate’s name is tattooed somewhere on ur body then it disappears when u meet them and said their name in front of them hahah the problem is u don’t quite understand yours????
a/n: this is my first time writing a soulmate au idk if i did it right oof
“Ugh,” you roll your eyes at your best friend. “Name a scam.” You tell her as she gushes about finally meeting her soulmate, showing off her spotless wrist where her soulmate’s name used to reside. She did find hers. Huh, so it is true. “Kidding aside, I’m happy for you. I really truly am,” you nudge her before going in for a hug.
“I’m sure you’ll find yours,” she rubs your arm comfortingly. “Soon,” she winks.
“Easy for you to say,” you laugh at her. Remembering how the name on her skin was written in the same language.
You shake that thought off your mind. Honestly, you’ve removed that thought from your mind the day you saw your so-called soulmate’s name tatted on your skin. There was no point in finding your soulmate––whose name is written in a completely different language. Someone must have played a prank on you without you noticing, that was the only explanation for this. And that, in fact, you weren’t blessed with a soulmate in the first place.
The afternoon was getting pretty hot so you decide to remove your jacket and rush to your favorite smoothie shop. “Uh, banana for me please,” you smile to the guy manning the cashier.
“Y/N?” An unfamiliar voice calls you from behind. After getting your change, you turn around to find the owner of the mysterious voice. And there stood a pretty charming guy, his hair quite a mess–but the neat kind, wearing only a plain loose black shirt and jeans ripped in the right places with his almost worn-out sneakers. You blink before you find yourslef hypnotized by this man’s looks.
“Sorry,” your face scrunches with suspicion. “But who are you?” He motions for you to turn around. Instinctively, you follow the stranger’s instruction. You feel his finger lightly touch the upper part of your back and you immediately catch his hand with yours, gripping on it with so much strength. The stranger’s face quickly turns from complete shock to winces of pain. “What are you doing?” You ask him as you pull him to the side as to not cause any disturbance with the shop’s growing line.
“T-Tattoo?” He struggles to say with his accent. You let go of his hand and he shakes it back and forth, hoping he could release some of the pain away.
“What?” You ask in surprise, your voice a little bit higher this time–causing other customers to look at you. “What?” You repeat, but with a moderate tone this time.
He stares at you for a long time, unable to respond. He suddenly smiles as he takes out his phone and begins typing something. My name is written on your back, he tells you through a translator.
You blink a few times, making sure this person in front of you is actually there and not a hallucination due to you and your best friend’s conversation from earlier. “O-Okay,” you stutter. “Prove it, then.” You raise an eyebrow at him.
He scratches his head, thinking of some way to prove it to you. “Ah!” He shows you the side of his left hand. You squint, not understanding what he was exactly getting at. He takes a look at it as well–quite shocked at what he saw before his eyes. There was nothing. His skin was clear, absolutely no visible mark on it. “I called you! D-Do you remember?” He asks you with hopeful eyes, “Y/N?” He calls your name once more.
“Forget it,” you tell him coldly. “We wouldn’t understand each other anyway. I don’t even know how to pronounce your name!” You were beginning to feel annoyed. Were the divine forces playing some kind of prank on the both of you? How could this possibly work out in the first place? Weren’t they thinking? All of these questions flooded your mind. You didn’t want to waste this man’s time.
“For Woojin!” The server calls out from the claiming area. His eyes glimmer once again as he shows you the receipt for his drink with his name written on it. He nods at you, motioning you to say his name.
“W-Woojin?” You look at him skeptically. He pulls you towards the shop’s large glass window, your reflection clear on this bright afternoon. You were surprised to see that the tattoo on your back was gone in an instant. You turn to look at him surprised, “It really is you.”
He nods at you happily, before he hears his name called from the counter once again. The both of you walk over to get your drinks. “Do you want to sit?” He asks you shyly. You could sense that he was very much afraid of making a mistake in every word he says, but you thought it was cute. So, you tell him okay.
“Hmm…” you fiddle with your straw. “Do you live here?”
“My family just moved,” he says without looking at you. They really moved here out of all places? You thought. What a coincidence. The divine forces really went out of their way with this one, huh. “8 months? I’m still taking English classes,” he interrupts your thoughts.
“Oh wow,” you look up at him. “But you’re already quite good in English? I mean, you already know a lot, that’s for sure.” He finally looks up at you, and you reassure him with a smile.
“Thanks,” he chuckles. “I didn’t know I’d find my soulmate, I’ve been looking everywhere.” His face turns serious, “I never stopped. And now you’re here.” He sighs. “Look, I know it’s hard, but I’m not going anywhere. Especially not now that I’ve found you.”
You were taken aback by his straightforwardness; did he take English classes to plan what he’d say when he finally finds you? It sure did pay off, you thought. “I’m not sure what to tell you,” you tell him. “But I stopped looking for you a long, long time ago.” His face drops, and you could feel a light tug at your heart. Truthfully, you were afraid that you might let him down. That you weren’t the soulmate he pictured inside his head.
“I understand.” He agrees, “You’re right. We just met and I’m already scaring you.” He takes a long sip of his drink, providing so much space for an awkward silence. “Okay, okay,” he suddenly says. “How about we start again?” He smiles and gets up towards the store’s front door, leaving his drink on the table. You chuckle at how crazy he looked walking back inside again, pretending to look at the menu––as he pretends to have just seen you, his face in a surprise, and runs back to your table.
“Hi,” he smiles–this time you catch a glimpse of his snaggletooth, making you smile yourself. “I am Woojin. Nice to meet you,” he shakes your hand respectfully with an exaggerated bow. “Is this drink taken?” He points at his drink almost half empty.
You laugh at him before answering, “Pretty sure it’s the seat you ask!” And the both of you laugh at how silly this all was. “Uhm, earlier, you said you weren’t going anywhere?” He shakes his head and tells you nope, with a popping sound at the end. “Alright then,” you smile at him as you think of another question to ask. “Just a warning, I get talkative.” This is going to be one long afternoon. He didn’t mind at all, he’s been waiting for this his entire life.
I met my soulmate. Details to follow, you type on your phone and hit send to your best friend. Turning your phone off and placing it at the deep end of your bag before facing a then-stranger turned soulmate right in front of you. He flashes you his snaggletooth once more, “Do you wanna eat?” And you nod as you feel your stomach coincidentally rumble. Maybe the divine forces don’t make mistakes after all.

Even more starco oneshots
Marco contemplated whether this was all just a big tease, another one of Janna's pranks gone wrong, or if he really died and went to heaven. There's no way Star actually said what she just said. Right?
After a few moments of awkward silence, the boy began to laugh. "Haha, that's- that's funny! I thought… I thought you said you wanted to, you know, kiss me! Hahahaha…"
He continued to play it off as a joke but soon quieted down when he realized Star was being serious.
"Hahaha… ha… oh."
Star continued to stare at Marco, waiting intensely for a response. She repeated the question again. "Marco?"
"Y-yes?"
"Will you help me practice kissing?"
His heart pumped a thousand beats per minute and his face bright red. Star? And him? KISS? Marco avoided eye contact with his best friend, now suddenly becoming very self conscious of himself. "U-um… W-why do you need practice for kissing?"
Star fidgeted, trying to keep her own embarrassment under control. "I have a date with Oskar tomorrow. And… I thought it'd be nice if I knew how to kiss…"
"Oh… Okay…" He wasn't sure why, but the answer kind of disappointed him. Sure Star should have her own love life, but with Oskar of all people? He wasn't exactly the most responsible kid around, plus she just asked him out yesterday. Their first date and they're going to kiss? She's moving way too fast if you ask Marco. It's just… Marco didn't like the idea of Star having her own boyfriend. He wasn't sure why…
No… that's hypocritical. He was allowed to date Jackie (thanks to Star), but he wouldn't let her have her own boyfriend? Plus… he and Jackie did in fact kiss on their first date, so he can't really say anything about that. As much as he didn't like it, he promised himself he would support whatever made Star happy. But…
"Why do you want to practice with me?" Marco asked.
Star's hearts began to glow as she turned her head. "Well… you kissed Jackie a couple times, right? I thought… maybe you could help me out? Give me a few tips?"
He pulled on his collar and stammered, "W-well… u-um th-there's… I-I uh… I-I mean…"
"You don't have to do this if you don't want to!" Star quickly added on apologetically. "I was just wondering how this whole kissing thing works since I've never kissed anyone before and I don't mean to make it awkward or make things uncomfortable between us, but I'm just a bit nervous about it and I was wondering if you can help me since you and Jackie kiss a lot, which is totally understandable cuz you're just this extremely nice and awesome guy who's also really cute and everything, so no wonder she's all over you, and I'm talking too much, aren't I?"
Marco was dead silent, blushing even harder than before. "U-um…"
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have brought this up. It's pretty weird, I know. Maybe we can just pretend this never happened, haha…" she scratched her head, trying to play it cool (and obviously failing). "Anyway, I'll just go back to my room and do some homework!"
She began walking towards the door when she felt a hand grab her wrist. She turned to see Marco's bright red face, trying his best to avoid eye contact.
"I… guess… I can help you…" he said quietly.
It was Star's turn to blush. She took a step forward so that their faces were a few inches apart. Her own heart began to beat like crazy, her stomach doing flips as she continued to stare at Marco's lips.
"S-so… um… I guess we should um… start with the basics…" He forced himself to look into Star's beautiful eyes.
"Okay…" she said breathlessly.
"So… there's just… the simple peck on the lips…" Marco leaned in. Their lips barely touched each other for a second, but it was enough to send a jolt of euphoria in both the teens. They parted and stared at each other with wide eyes.
"..."
"..."
"So… that's a peck, huh?"
Marco cleared his throat. "Y-yeah…"
Star nodded, unable to say anything else.
"Then… there's the… usual kisses…"
He slowly leaned in and met once again, this time with a little more force. It was awkward, yes. Maybe because it was Star's first time kissing. Maybe it was some hidden feelings for each other. Or maybe it's the fact that best friends don't do this kind of stuff in the first place, especially when one of them already has a girlfriend, but Marco already promised he'd do anything for Star to make her happy. It's his duty as her best friend, right?
Star felt Marco break the kiss. Suddenly, she missed the warmth of his lips on hers. "W-was… did… I do that right?"
He swore his heart was going to burst out of his chest if it beat any faster. Star's shy demeanor and blushing face was all too cute for the boy. He tried to regain his focus for the task at hand. "Ahem… well… you could use a little practice on that one…"
"O-okay… So… h-how should I kiss then?"
"Try to, um… y-you're not really kissing back when… I'm kissing you…"
"Kiss back? You mean like… this?" She kissed Marco once again with more force. She stayed like that for a couple seconds, the taste of his lips becoming more familiar to her. Just as she was beginning to melt into it, Marco broke the kiss again.
"Ah… sorry… Just that…"
Star panicked. "O-oh my gosh, I'm sorry! Is this getting too awkward? I'm really sorry!"
Marco waved his hands. "No, no! Nothing like that- I mean… yeah it's… kind of awkward, but that's besides the point. It's just that… well… normal kisses don't um… last that long…"
"Oh… sorry…"
"Heh, yeah… um… so those should last around… maybe a couple seconds at most. The um… You usually kiss longer if you want it to be more… you know… intimate…" the boy quietly said.
"Okay…"
"..."
"..."
"..."
"Do… you mind if I, um… practice that?"
Marco was too nervous and confused about everything that's going on right now. He's teaching his best friend… he's kissing his best friend! Do best friends normally do this? Probably not, but it seemed… natural to them. But wait, he has a girlfriend… what's her name again? ...Jackie…? Right! His girlfriend… Jackie…
But he couldn't just leave Star without being prepared, right?
Marco nodded. "S-sure…"
"...Okay…" Star stared into his chocolate eyes, and his into her vibrant blue eyes. The two closed the distance once more. She took a step closer so that their bodies were against each other while Marco slowly wrapped his arms around her waist. Star felt him pull her closer and instinctively draped her arms around his neck. Their kiss became more and more passionate as time went on, but eventually they broke apart, gasping for air.
"You're pretty good at this…" Marco mentioned.
Star's hearts were glowing bright pink as she caught her breath. "...Thanks…"
"Oskar is a lucky guy…"
"Who?" Marco tilted his head. The princess thought for a moment before the name finally rang a bell. "O-oh… Oskar! Right…"
The awkward silence returned as the two looked into each other's eyes. The two slowly leaned in again, their lips inches apart.
"Star…"
"Marco…"
Space unicorn! Soaring through the stars~
The teens jumped at the sudden interruption and stepped back from one another. They blinked, trying to register everything that just happened.
Delivering the rainbows all around the world~
Marco quickly ran towards his phone. "H-hello? ...Jackie! H-hey! ...Uh… yeah, okay! Sounds good! I'll meet you there… 'kay, see you soon." The boy stared at his phone before turning to Star. Neither said a word for a moment, still dazed from their… practice session. "...That was… that was Jackie…"
Star played with the hems of her dress. "Oh… cool! Um… h-how is she?"
"She's good… She wants to, um… go see a movie…"
"That sounds fun…"
"Y-yeah…"
"...I guess you'd better get going then…"
"R-right! I should get going… heh…" Marco shyly opened the door, glancing at Star once. "...See you later…" With that, he shut the door, leaving Star to herself in his room.
She felt her legs finally give out and dropped to her knees. She covered her face, feeling the extreme heat coming off her skin. "It was just practice… just practice…"
One day later
Marco sat on the couch, watching TV, flipping through the channels hoping to find something interesting, but nothing seemed all that entertaining. He heard the front door open and close. Without looking, he knew it was his best friend returning from her date with Oskar. He was wondering if all that practice actually helped her…
He felt the couch sink in as the princess took her seat next to the boy.
"So how'd it go?"
"It was… fun… I guess…"
Marco turned his head. "You guess?"
"...We didn't really have much to talk about…"
"Oh… that's silly. You're a princess from another dimension. You're telling me he had nothing to say?"
Star shrugged. "Nope…"
Marco sighed. "Sorry to hear that…"
"That's okay. I did get asked out by the waiter though…"
He raised an eyebrow. "Really? Well aren't you miss popular?" he teased.
"Yeah, so I kind of have a date with him now? We're meeting up tomorrow."
"Oh… cool…" Marco returned his attention to the TV. While it did relieve him that Star lost her interest in Oskar, he still felt disappointed that she accepted another date from another guy she just met today.
"...Hey Marco."
"Yeah?"
"...Do you mind… if I practice with you again…?"
Marco turned his head to see a red faced Star who had her focus on the TV, too shy to directly look at him. He felt his heart race once more and his own face heat up. "...R-right now?"
"...Only if you want to..." she said quietly
"...A-alright… let's start with the peck…"

Credence awoke to an unfamiliar sound. His eyes shot open to see that he had fallen asleep in the living room. His head laid against the arm of the couch before he sat up to see something quite unusual. There was a big, pine tree stuck in the doorway. He watched as you were trying to get it through the door by pulling the trunk. You turned and noticed Credence was sitting up. “I was going to try to surprise you,” you chuckled, moving your hands to your hips, examining the tree. “I didn’t think this one would be too big.” you stated, starting to pull the tree again. Credence stood up and walked over to you. You were staring at the tree again with your hands on your hips, trying to think of a way to get the Christmas tree in. “Let’s try together,” you suggested. He nodded and you both gripped the trunk. “1…2…3…” You both pulled as hard as you possibly could and the tree finally came through the doorway. The unexpected force of the tree breaking through, knocked you both over. You laughed at each other, as you stood up. “Finally!” you exclaimed, putting your hands in the air. Credence smiled at your excitement. “I think I want it over there,” you said, pointing to the corner beside the fireplace. You both carried the tree over to where you wanted it. You propped it up in the corner, then stepped back to look at it. “How did you get this up two flights of stairs?” Credence asked you, with a slight laughter in his voice that made you smile. “It wasn’t easy, let me tell you that,” you said, laughing up at him. You looked back at the tree, but Credence kept looking at you. The way you smiled made him feel warm inside. He felt like it was possible for the world not be as dark as he had always known it.
After breakfast, you got the Christmas decorations out of the closet. You wanted to make this the best Christmas Credence had ever had. You knew it wouldn’t be hard to top his other Christmases, but you still wanted to make this the best Christmas ever. You knew it would be with Credence around. You put a Christmas record on to set the festive mood. It started to snow like crazy and the apartment started to get cold, so you started up the fireplace. You and Credence hung ornaments on the big tree. “Have you ever had a Christmas tree before?” you asked him, hoping to get him to open up about his past. “Ma always said they were too much work, that they weren’t necessary,” he said quietly, picking out an ornament to hang on the tree. You frowned at this, thinking about how awful his life had been, even when Christmas was around. “Did you even celebrate Christmas?” “Not really,” Credence whispered. “Well you do now,” you smiled at him thought the tree branches. The morning was magical. The snow continued to fall, as the fire continued to crackle. The music played softly as you decorated the tree. You picked up an old ornament and showed it to Credence. “I made this when I was in first grade,” you smiled down at the horribly made ornament. It was a one of those cookie ornaments that you cook in oven. Credence looked at it with so much wonder. He had never really had something like that before: something from his past that he cared about. But he also loved it when you talked about yourself and your past. He smiled down at you while you laughed and told the story of how you made it. How you spent almost two hours trying to make it as perfect as you could. “It’s so NOT perfect too,” you laughed, putting the ornament on a bough. You turned around to find Credence still staring at you, but with a sad expression on his face. He quickly turned back to the box of ornaments on the coffee table. You frowned a little, walking forward and placing your hand on his shoulder. He sniffed and quickly wiped away the fallen tears. “What’s wrong?” He shook his head violently. You pulled his shoulder a little so he faced you. “Credence, you can tell me,” you said, reassuringly as you put your hand on his cheek, wiping away tears. “I know it’s so hard,” you said, bowing your head. “I don’t expect everything to just be normal. You’ve been through so much. You need time to heal and work through everything, and I’m here for you whenever you’re ready to talk about it,” you said, looking into his sad eyes. You hadn’t seen his eyes this sad in a while. They were never completely happy, but they weren’t like they were before, when he lived with Mary Lou. He nodded, blinking, sending tears down his face. “Come here,” you whispered, pulling him into a sweet hug. You pulled away, placing your hand back on his cheek. His arms were still wrapped around your waist as you rubbed his cheek with your thumb. “Okay, I think we’re done!” you said, a while after the hug. You gathered all of the empty boxes and put them back in the closet. Credence sat on the couch, finishing up the book you gave him. You loved seeing him engaged in something. You stood in the kitchen, looking around with your hands on your hips. “How about some lunch?” you asked. Credence lowered his book and smiled, nodding to answer. “Okay, I’ll make us some sandwiches,” you smiled back at him. You ate lunch in your festive apartment. You could tell Credence loved the tree and the music, and everything that had to do with Christmas. After you finished lunch and the cleaned up the kitchen, you told Credence you were going to go check the mail. You went down the two flights of stairs to the mail boxes. You looked in yours and there were a few letters. You ran back up the stairs to Credence. You shut the door with you foot while flipping through the letters. They were all bills, till you got to the last one. It was from your mother. You got excited and Credence glanced up at you. You looked up from the letter and smiled at him. “It’s from my mom!” you told him with excitement in your voice. He walked over from the couch as you ripped through the envelope. You pulled out the letter and a small, leafy thing. You looked confused at the little note attached to the plant. Your face started to turn bright red as you read the note. ‘For the one’ “What’s that?” Credence asked, curious of your reaction to the leaves. You looked up at him, with a little worry in your eyes. “U-Um it’s, it’s nothing. It’s called mistletoe,” you stuttered. Credence continued to stare at you as if to keep asking. You took a big sigh, trying to think of a way to explain it without embarrassing you both. “Well, there’s a tradition during Christmas time. You’re supposed to hang it up and if you stand under it with someone you’re supposed to kiss them.” You blurted out, feeling your face burn with embarrassment. “My mom is always pestering me that I’m single. I guess this is her way of trying to get me with someone.” you laughed nervously. “Anyway, let’s read the letter,” you said, breaking the awkward silence. As you read it your face fell. You sighed frustratedly. "What?“ Credence asked, shyly. You covered your face with your hand saying, "I totally forgot that I’m going to Maine in less than two weeks, to see my family for Christmas.” “And you’re upset about that?” Credence asked, confused. “No, but I can’t leave you here alone and I can’t—” you stopped, sighing again, trying to figure out what to do. “You can’t bring me,” Credence finished your sentence. “It’s not that I don’t want to,” you quickly added. “I just don’t know if it would be wise,” you paused, thinking about all that could go wrong. “I haven’t even told them about you,” you quietly admitted. You felt bad telling him this, but you didn’t want to tell your mother and have her freak out. “Would you even want to go?” you asked him, breaking the silence again. “I don’t know. . .” he said, quietly. “Would they even like me?” he shyly asked. “Of course they would! Don’t be silly,” you smiled at him. “Could you handle a train? And being out it the city again?” you asked him, “I mean we could build up to it, we don’t have to go straight to train rides.” you asked, looking at him as he stood stiffly in front of you. “I think I could try,” Credence said, quietly.
To be continued…
