Sato Ryuga in Kamen Rider Geats - an overview for non-toku folks

Now that Living with Him (Kare no Iru Seikatsu) has premiered has a couple of episodes out and is getting a good response from a lot of the folks I know on here, I thought it might be a good time to do one of those posts I do sometimes. I should probably have a name for this. Like, a tokusatsu actor overview post? My imagined audience for posts like this is made up of BL fans who haven't watched toku but would like to know more about their favorite actors' pasts in that genre. But I hope they're interesting for others as well.

The tokusatsu-to-BL pipeline has been getting shorter lately, with a lot of recent toku alums getting into BLs within the first year or so after their toku series has ended. Sato Ryuga falls into this category. He was on Kamen Rider Geats, which stopped airing last August. His costar Kan Hideyoshi, who played the lead rider in that series (Ukiyo Ace, a.k.a. Kamen Rider Geats), made the leap so quickly that the BL he was in, Although I Love You, and You? a.k.a. Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka, finished airing a while ago. That show had its moments but was a bit on the lackluster side (through no fault of Kan's--I thought he was charming, funny, and showed an admirable commitment to the role). I'm a lot more hopeful about Living with Him. In addition to its promising start, it was written by the screenwriter of Old Fashion Cupcake and directed by the director of My Personal Weatherman.

But even if it weren't for these positive indicators, I would have been excited to see Sato in a BL, or just about anything. He was really impressive in Geats. He showed a lot of range on that series, handling action, high drama, and occasional comedy really well. And it doesn't hurt that he's cute as hell.

By the way, I'm going to keep the spoilers vague in this post, but I can't really avoid them entirely while doing this type of overview. If relatively mild/general spoilers don't bother you, you should be OK to continue. And of course, if you don't think you'll ever watch Geats, you don't have to worry either way.

Sato and Kan together during Keiwa's villain era.

Sato's Geats character was named Sakurai Keiwa. Keiwa starts out as a sort of proxy for the audience. The premise of Geats involves a high-stakes competition called the Desire Grand Prix where the winner gets to magically change the world. Most of the time, most people don't know this competition is going on. It's already in progress when Keiwa encounters the players for the first time and he has zero context. As he learns about the game, and ends up joining in as Kamen Rider Tycoon (a pun on the fact that his suit form is modeled after a tanuki), the audience learns about it alongside him. Keiwa comes into the story as an idealistic sweetheart so it's easy to root for him right away. (This is less true of the other characters. Geats's biggest weakness, to my mind, is that it starts out conspicuously lacking in any sort of bonds between characters or truly relatable characters other than Keiwa. This gets a lot better by the latter part of the series, but I found it somewhat rough going to get to that point, and it took longer than it needed to.)

One interesting thing about Keiwa is that you can tell a lot about what's going on with him by his hair. You'll see what I mean. I didn't notice this until I was doing screenshots for this post and then it really stood out to me.

So, here's Keiwa as a naïve newcomer. Check out the cute mop.

It doesn't take long for him to get kind of intense when he's in a fight and about to henshin (transform into his armored suit form).

Speaking of which, for the first part of the series, his pre-transformation move involves a sort of determined fist gesture, which will be important later.

This is a later example of the henshin fist, but it gets the point across.

Intense henshin face notwithstanding, he's still Mr. Nice Guy for a lot of the series. He might get a bit of a hair part but he's basically a floppy-haired cinnamon roll.

And then something bad happens.

This thing is really hard on Keiwa, and he has a dark night of the soul. He gets estranged from the other lead characters.

The hair is already going a little haywire here.

He does some creepy shit.

Then he gets into an even darker place.

Keiwa switches up his henshin move. He starts snapping his fingers, which is part of Ace's signature move. Ace is a total badass who has won the Desire Grand Prix repeatedly. He's a perpetual contender, the guy everyone else is always gunning for because he's the most likely to come out on top. I mean, his name is Ace. Adopting the snapping part of his henshin move has significant symbolism. It's like Keiwa is saying he's the new badass in town. He also has a new, stronger suit form to go along with this change.

There's a difference in the way Keiwa does the snap that's worth noting. Ace's snap move starts as a fox head hand gesture (think the rock'n'roll devil horns gesture but with a pointed snout) because Geats takes the form of a kitsune when he goes into suit mode. Keiwa's snap starts with his hand upraised, fingers up, the back of his hand facing outward. It's reminiscent of an American-style beckoning motion (the "c'mere" finger thing and its multi-finger equivalent), which I gather is considered extremely rude in Japan. This calls back to the henshin move of a favorite toku character of mine, Sawatari Kazumin/Kamen Rider Grease, who Takeda Kouhei played on Kamen Rider Build. Sawatari just straight up does the rude beckoning motion before transforming. It's a very antagonistic, cocky thing to do.

As you can see, Keiwa's hair is really going haywire at this point.

Keiwa ends up facing off with Ace more and more, including in some scenes like the one below. It doesn't really come off this way to me when I'm watching the scenes, but when I look at these screenshots, these two look about as likely to smooch as they do to come to blows.

Keiwa's hair starts to get a little less poofy at this point but the cute mop hasn't returned. Instead, his hair is almost ready to go into bad guy mode!

Finally, Keiwa tips over into full-on villain territory. This is signaled by his hair getting a defined part. He also starts wearing an earring, just for extra bad boy hotness points.

(I’ve seen this earring thing happen in Japanese media quite a few times and it always seems funny to me, because an actor will have had a very visible hole in his earlobe for a whole series and then when he puts something in it we’re supposed to be all surprised Pikachu about it. It’s an interesting commentary on the cultural significance of earrings on dudes, I guess. Now I’m trying to think of nice boys in toku who get to wear earrings in their highly visible ear holes. Kaito from Zenkaiger is one, at least. I assume there are others?)

He keeps snapping/beckoning.

The beckoning thing is clearer here, and it has that flipping off the audience energy.

He adopts some pretty cold-blooded expressions.

In some scenes, like the one seen above, he seems to have subtle makeup on. I don't know if this is because villains are supposed to be hotter or because they're supposed to be more gender non-conforming. Or both? Well, it suits him.

As you would probably guess, Keiwa doesn't stay bad. The stuff that sent him off the deep end gets resolved and his relationships with other characters get repaired. He also gets his mop back (it's only intermittently messy) and loses the earring. He goes back to his original henshin move.

There you have it! Hopefully this gets across a good bit about Sato's Geats character and some of the shifts he goes through. Of course, I've left out plenty of stuff as well. Anyone who's really curious should definitely check out the series.

Actually, I'm not finished.

A lot of people (especially in online friendships) who struggle with their mental health put an overwhelming amount of pressure on their friends, even if they've only been speaking for a few months.

It's always some kind of 'I have this issue, but I'm working on it, so don't worry' until you don't message them back quick enough and they send you a lecture about how you must hate them and they're a terrible person and if you don't want to talk, you should just go.

You stop being their friend and turn into their source of encouragement and validation. They post depracating things about themselves so you'll tell them they're wrong. Every day. Every conversation. Something needs your attention constantly. And I mean constantly. If you leave them on read for too long, they dissolve and you're messaging them for hours trying to talk them off the ledge.

And what can you do? They don't do this maliciously. Most of the time they have a legitimate condition and their reactions are fueled by things outside of their control. And you love them. They're your friend. You want to help, but you have no idea how.

You can't say anything. Even gentle boundaries cause them to spiral. 'I'm at work on these days, so I won't reply until I get home' is met with 'I'm so sorry, I'm a terrible and needy person. If you want to leave, just go ahead. I don't want you to feel pressured to reply. I'm a horrible friend.' Telling them that their reactions are genuinely upsetting is worse. They accuse you of not caring about their disorder and it doesn't take much for them to tell you how close they are to killing themselves. They never say it directly, but it feels like they're blaming you. You shouldn't have said anything. You apologize, comfort them, beg them to stay, talk for hours to keep them calm and tell yourself never to be honest again.

You can't talk to your friend. Most topics are taboo. You can't have any negative feedback and if you even use different puncuation than usual they begin to accuse you of hating them. They start urging you to be honest, saying they know you must be annoyed and angry at them. And honestly? At this point they're right. You feel like a monster. They're so vulnerable and in such a terrible spot and you've let them think you hate them. No matter how much you try to bend around them, they can sense that you left the friendship weeks ago.

Things boil over. Every conversation is them challenging you to leave. Daring you. Almost begging you. They test you at every chance. You wonder if they actually hate you and want you to go. They've stopped sending extra messages when you don't reply. You stop messaging first and hope they forget about you. Maybe they do. Time goes by and you realize you haven't spoken in several months.

Whenever you think of them, you don't remember the jokes or the songs you shared or the movies you gushed over together. You remember bending over backwards and struggling to say just the right thing all the time. Why don't you miss them? You're an awful friend. They were in so much pain. It was all your fault. You should have tried harder. They never said anything mean to you, only themselves. They had such a hard life. You wonder if they're doing any better now. You wonder if you had stayed maybe they would have gotten out of that rough patch and become your friend again. You wonder if they ever went through with all those threats...

I'm just begging anyone who reads this to think about it next time they're about to send a message that resembles one of my examples here. Don't send it. Take a walk. Draw a picture. Watch an episode of TV. Eat. Take a shower. Do something- anything. Then go back and ask yourself- do you really want to say that? If you already know you have the 'sabotages every relationship' disorder, then maybe ask yourself beforehand if a certain message might be self-sabotaging. Before sending messages, type them in your notes app and ask if they sound reasonable. Idk. All I know is some things can't be unsent.

Hi anon! sorry this is now several days late but boy do I. ( watched FAMK for the first time in February, wound up with Pages and pages of fic snippets (for a couple ships, margo x molly included) in chicken scratch on physical paper which is always a great sign that im being normal about a show, thought I'd cure myself if I just watched the whole thing a second time and absolutely only made it worse. )

I meant to answer this ask by just typing up the quick excerpt of the fic I was talking to myself in the tags about but...... started typing and did not stop. It lives over here now! Was not the one of the notebook fics I thought would see the light of day but you know? why not.

(I assume if you're here you, like me, have already read all the fics to be found but if you have Not read everything in that tag already, highly recommend. this fandom may be small but boy did it have good food on offer when I rolled in four years late fresh off a few episodes and absolutely screaming.)

Since I went ahead and dropped that one on ao3 at like 4am i'll throw in something a little more typical of the the notebook archives - how about this thing that exists entirely bc i noticed that used bookstore you can see beside the Outpost in season 1 and it gave me Ideas

Sometime post crossword-quiz / pre- run-in at the Jazz club.  

Margo walks fast past the Outpost on her way over to Bargain Books. When she can, she prefers to park down at the other end of the street and not have to go by that eyesore of a bar in the first place, but when you double the size of the astronaut program with twenty female ascans, you turn street parking into a blood sport. On her salary, no way is she playing chicken with the corvettes, not even to avoid mustering a polite smile for a coworker at his inebriated worst. 

Most days, that’s only an issue if she swings by after dark, the hour when everybody’s trickling out and stumbling home for the evening. Otherwise, the dingy whitewashed plywood keeps a nice impenetrable wall between book-seeking passers-by and drunken test pilots. Today, however, a spell of perfect weather is conspiring against her. Someone has the door propped open with a rusty paint can, letting the sound of laughter of clinking glass spill through it onto the sidewalk. 

A flash of green catches Margo’s eye before she can make it past. Despite herself, she recognizes that shade in an instant. It’s the flannel shirt she had to reprimand earlier that afternoon for bringing a lit cigarette into the sim. Molly Cobb, bent over a pool table, chin twisted up towards Patty Doyle, grinning like a woman about to win.  

Just Margo’s luck that this is the perfect time of day—indoor light matching outdoor light—for Molly to catch her eye straight through the open door as she makes her shot. 8-ball, dead in the pocket. 

For no reason she can think of, Margo feels heat rushing up into her cheeks. 

She stalks into Bargain Books in a hurry. 

The sweater-vested owner behind the front desk gives her the polite nod reserved for a good customer (and disinterested conversationalist) as she beelines for Paperback Fiction. She finished Matheson’s Ride the Nightmare last night— should have picked up two when she noticed how short it was in the first place, but nothing else tickled her fancy when she was in here a week ago, so here she is again, browsing spines. Maybe it's time to cave and finally grab a 10¢ copy of Rosemary's Baby from the stack on the end, seeing as it’s the one highly recommended title in her genre-of-choice the entire country seems to have read in the last couple years, but she already knows the ending (and the entire premise of demonic pregnancy does not appeal for tuning out after the work day). 

She’s dubiously eying the back-cover blurb on a Chandler detective thriller instead when a voice over her shoulder says, “Oh, Patty loves this shit.” 

To her great chagrin, Margo jumps, gasps, and drops her book. “Jesus, Molly.” 

“My bad.” 

Molly squats down to pick it up, slouchy brown corduroy flexing over her thighs. She fixes a bend in the cover before offering it back to her, but when Margo tries to take it away, Molly doesn’t let go. Instead, she adopts a playfully quirked brow and tugs it back towards herself inch-by-inch, bringing Margo, frowning, a step closer than she was before. “Came here to see if I could talk you into a drink.” 

Margo’s voice comes out approximately four steps too high as she looks around for some explanatory audience and says incredulously, “In there?” with a jerk of her thumb towards the Outpost’s adjoining wall. 

“Yeah. NASA central, shithole though it may be, but I never see you around.” 

“Well, I’m not an astronaut.” 

“Neither are the five white-shirts who monopolize the best booth in the back six nights a week. They don’t check for a pin at the door, Madison. That’d be no way to run a business. It’s a bar. Come have a drink with me.” 

“With… you.” She asks because she expects there to be an and. Me and the other ascans. Me and the rest of you white-shirt types in the back. Me and Patty Doyle. 

But Molly just raps the cover of The Lady in the Lake with her knuckles and says again, “With me.”

I have to actively suppress the urge to read the synopses of the episodes at this point

oh also lol this is just funny to me, I saw a post Elsewhere Online where someone watched all of spop the first time and they HATED the dumb names everyone has, and I think they mentioned Castaspella specifically.

And like FIFTY PEOPLE responded with "dude they had to use the original names from the 1980's series" and I was the only one there old enough to have watched the original series and I had to point out: the original series was made to sell toys. The vast majority of cartoons in 1985 were only made to sell toys. They gave everyone those dumbass names because it was easy for kids to remember and beg for the toys."

That's also why all the female characters in the original series have the exact same body type. Yeah the body shape itself was due to 1980's-era sexism, but also? It was so much cheaper to animate the show AND make the toys that way!

But also, it's hella ironic to me that the 2018 show has so little official merch!

their conversation here is so good, because Catra's fully aware of why Adora's doing this, but is really struggling to push past how much she (justifiably!) hates Shadow Weaver and hates being around her

I actually do kinda wish I'd kept a list of all the times Adora does the self-sacrificial thing, separated into "someone asked her to do it" vs "nobody asked her to do it" lol

two things I really love about this: One, she doesn't say that she doesn't like Adora, just that it's not the reason she's going. Two, I feel like Adora knows damn well Catra's not being 100% honest here.

Like, to some extent Catra's saying this as a way of attempting to protect herself a little. She's taking baby steps towards vulnerability, and it's terrifying! And I think Adora can see that and is fine with it--not JUST because she's like "any crumbs are better than nothing" but ALSO because she doesn't want to push Catra.

Because yeah, if there was any actual doubt that Catra does like Adora--

WELL.

Entrapta was able to get Spinerella's chip out but says it had started fusing with her nervous system and they're running out of time to safely un-chip everyone.

But she's been digging around the network that connects all the chips to Prime, hoping to figure out how to disconnect everyone at once, and Bow gives her a little encouragement, it's really sweet.

OKAY so everyone who can, teleports to Mystacor with Melog making them invisible. (Apparently Catra doesn't get motion sick from it anymore which is nice lol)

Catra turns around and says "looks like there's no sorcerers here" while, unfortunately, a sorcerer walks into the room. Shadow Weaver grabs Catra and puts her hand over her mouth to keep her quiet, and Catra (understandably!! but unfortunately!!) jerks away in fury and yells

And her fury causes Melog to drop the invisibility

And now the chipped sorcerer knows they're all there

they manage to duck the attack but Adora goes to transform into She-Ra--and can't do it

she had this issue last episode aaaugh it's not from being near Shadow Weaver she wasn't there

okay but also Adora runs behind a pillar to hide from an attack with Catra and it's cute

girl help why is this giving me so many emotions

y'know it's funny how often I've bumped into posts of people who are confused as to why Adora starts trusting Catra again so quickly, and I frequently wonder if they forget all the childhood flashback scenes of these two. To varying extents they both spent their entire childhoods seeing the other as their only consistent source of comfort and (something resembling) safety, and with some notable exceptions Adora's spent the last four seasons (which was like three or four years) visibly holding out hope that one day she could trust Catra again. This despite the fact that she now has other sources of safety and comfort and love!!! Being with Glimmer and Bow and everyone else was healing, sure; but it never erased her grief over losing Catra. She always, always held out the tiniest flame of hope that Catra would change sides.

And Catra basically tried lighting her own grief on fire (metaphorically and kinda literally) over and over and it just didn't go away, and I feel like when she saved Glimmer and apologized to Adora she had sort of come to terms with the fact that her grief over losing Adora couldn't be burned away, but of course by then she figured she'd fucked up so bad Adora would never forgive her or trust her again. And rather than take it out on other people or suffer any longer she was willing to just die, instead. She really did think that sending Glimmer to Adora was going to be her last act, and she wanted Adora to know she was sorry before she fucking DIED. And I don't think her saving Glimmer was consciously meant to be proof that she meant her apology, but it was. And that's part of why Adora trusts her again.

The fact is, even after everything that happened, both of them had a hole in their hearts shaped like the other. ;_;

And that's why Adora runs and hides behind the same pillar as Catra. (I mean yes, it was also closer, but that's not tHE POINT)

Anyway, this is all why, as I previously noted, Adora's not being pushy. That failed on her, spectacularly; the couple of times she tried it. Asking Catra to come along on this mission is the closest she's come. And even then, it wasn't "you're a good person deep down and you should change sides because I think I know you better than you know yourself," It was "please do this for me, because I need your help." And Catra is fully aware of how hard that is for Adora.

And these two still have a lot to work out post-canon (like, Catra has still got to deal with her need to not just be seen as Adora's sidekick/shadow, and lbh right now some of the rebellion is like "we're only putting up with you for Adora's sake" as if Catra was Yoko Ono) but that's part of why I'm writing a fic lolol

I have so many feelingssss on a related note I spent like fifteen solid minutes last night in bed having taken an edible and listening to my playlist and staring at this gifset lolol

ANYWAY Castaspella knocks out the chipped dude and they run for it

When there are situations that I thought “It must be this!” for choosing where to go or what to eat, I’d say I’m pretty good at considering from the location or the transportation means to go there, but I don’t really think I’m the type to “invite others”. Even when I’m invited by others I’d be happy too! Are there people that would dislike the idea of being invited anyway? (LOL)

I don’t overthink too much! — YES: 59%; NO: 41%

Maybe it’s just for a moment, but I probably won’t care later. “I don’t overthink” because it can’t be helped sometimes (LOL). It's not embarrassing to be concerned about something, and it's very important to understand your feelings, but I’d think that I have to move on. In the end for me, no matter what I’ve been told, I’m a type that sticks to my intention.

On rest days, I’m someone that could have fun alone. — YES: 56%; NO: 44%

— “This is quite half-half.” (LOL)

It depends on how long of the rest day period I’ll have. When we’re performing, there’d be things to catch up on even during rest days so I’d basically be alone, if it’s any kind of rest day and we’re not in the current circumstance, I’d want to go out and play with someone. I’d want to share my feelings even if it’s a vacation trip, and I don’t go to vacation trips alone. But when I’m alone I’d have some laid-back days, so I think half-half is the correct answer here (LOL).

Very resilient when it comes to sudden incidents! — YES: 61%; NO: 39%

— “You can’t help it if it suddenly occurs!”

Of course I’ll fret and because I won’t be able to turn back time again, I’ll go straight out in the open and think “what should I do!”, quickly coming up with an adaptation plan. On stage, if something happened between me and my partner, I’d be surprised but I could calmly deal with it. But when I’m shocked, I’d let out a silly “Wa!” and usually just shout that out loud (LOL), so please don’t try to scare me when we’re at somewhere silent (LOL).

The “Very Immersed”! Type — YES: 91%; NO: 9%

— “What did everyone see in me for you all to answer this~!? (LOL)

I don’t have much interests, so I was thinking what you think I may be very immersed into… (LOL) But anything performing arts related is probably the only thing that I won’t ever feel tired of. Ah, Korean dramas are something that I pay attention to. Even if I have to stay up at night I’d still watch the whole episode in a sitting, so perhaps this focused attention [I have for Kdramas] shows a concentrated side in me? But about that, I’m not someone that watches the same show again many times, when I’ve finished the finale then [my attention] ends in a boom (LOL).

When I start imagining things, I can’t stop — YES: 50%; NO: 50%

— “It’s so cool that it’s just half-half!”

If I was an employee from a company, would I have a longer lunch time? Sometimes everyone in Flower Troupe would talk about these hypotheticals. Also when I can’t sleep I would make up a story about rabbits and squirrels (LOL). I’d count sheep when I can't sleep, but I’d think if there are too many sheep, won’t the farm be packed? Or they couldn’t enter if I don’t shave their hair~ I’d think a lot about these and in the end still won’t be able to sleep (LOL). So with that I would say that I imagine things.

Sensitive to even the smallest changes around me — YES: 95%; NO: 5%

— “So many voted for YES!”

Aren’t all otokoyaku in Flower Troupe like that? I do observe changes and say, “Is this a new skirt?” or “Did you change the way you do your makeup?”, but I’d also realise “isn’t she feeling well?” “Did something good happen”. But in order not to make this a trouble, I’d also be conscious of the timing that I tell [these observations] to others.

Sometimes lying is necessary! — YES: 40%; NO: 60%

— “Because I’m foolishly honest~”

For lies, I won’t say them and I don’t want to say them because people’d find out if I do say it. I’d hate it the most if people thought “What you’re saying now is different than what you said before!” So if it’s in inevitable circumstances [to lie] I’d want to be very prepared for that. Even though I won’t say lies to preserve myself, I may probably lie if I were to protect others.

The “Leave it all to me” type — YES: 58%; NO: 42%

— “There’s more YES than I imagined!”

Probably because I have a firm body… (LOL) If that’s the case, then it would be super cool, but unfortunately I’m usually not that type at all I think (LOL). I’m an elder daughter, and I’m also the leader among our Flower Troupe doukis so I’d have to be responsible sometimes, maybe that’s where the image came from.

Won’t be affected by the majority — YES: 85%; NO: 15%

— “That’s true!”

Usually, if there’s a majority supporting this side, I won’t change even if I heard their reasons for it. Even though I’d accept and agree with “This is the reason why they are the majority!” In the end if I really am [in the minority], I’d be okay with it even if there’s something wrong about my reasoning.

No. 2 —— Role creation –Creating the character–

“Messiah -The Legend of Shiroh Amakusa-” Matsudaira Nobutsuna

— This musical is about the rebellion against the ban on Christianity in the early period of Edo era in Bizen Shimabara. Matsudaira Nobutsuna are one of the important roles in the shogunate against the Christinas.

Before receiving my role, I had the opportunity of going to Amakusa for work (*recording Sky Stage programme) that the performance was set in. While I related the feelings of the suppressed Christians at the time, I was able to see such history about them in the information centre. But when I received the role, I turned out to be a role in the shogunate. He holds a stance of evaluating whatever is happening, and he’s also the one to command open fire when the attack [against the Christians] started… I would say that he’s a role that mentally exhausted. He's a historical figure, but for me that time he was too grand of a person and I was very worried since he was so different from me and that I worried too much and I was far from relaxed… Just because I want him to look grand doesn’t mean I can exaggerate the acting. Also, even when it’s about the way I speak, I want to articulate even the last of my words, so as to present this role to be someone capable of giving orders.

— When you’re acting as someone that’s far from yourself, how do you make that work?

I’d imagine as to “why is this person thinking like this?” He works for the Tokugawa family and also someone who feels that he has to protect the shogunate, but at the same time have the feeling of wanting to save the people of Amakusa who were being suppressed. He was someone who could not be relieved form this dilemma but had to call shots painfully. Even though on stage the shogunate is obviously outnumbered, yet when facing Asumi [Rio]-san’s lead and the energy of the people, I’d have to convince myself that I’m leading a majority of soldiers with me and I felt that significance to show that every day. He’s someone that I would want to act again one day.

“Gin-chan’s Love” Kuraoka Ginshiro

— He’s self-centred but also a movie star that you can’t hate – Gin-chan. This is a restage but how did you create this role?

When I’m watching this performancer as an audience, I’d relate to Yasu’s feelings. Like Gin-chan’s not bad? Even if he’s an adult man, how could he go around and about being this selfish. With that as a start, while reading the script and discussing the plot with other cast members, I started to think what kind of Gin-chan exactly am I trying to create here. This performance only shows a brief moment of Gin-chan in his life, so I’d have to imagine how the rest of his life looked like. At first, I want the audience to be able to objectively imagine that there’s a reason for being full-out self-centred, so I wanted to create him as “someone quite cute”, but that’s not the real him, [I hope to act as Gin-chan] that people who didn’t realise his arrogance before could have a natural reaction, words and actions.

— Amidst all things, his colleague “kiddos” still envy and admire Gin-chan. Was there a change to your impression of before and after acting as (Gin-chan)?

About that, I think this is a nostalgic, little love story. Even though he treated his kiddos and also Yasu (Hiryuu Tsukasa) very cruelly, everyone still followed him because he still clearly shows how he loves them. Gin-chan is somewhat quite “pure”, he has faith that people whom he trust believe in him and does not question that. But this is not easy to do, that if I’m not playing him, I don’t think I’ll be able to understand him.

“Jirokichi of the Wind –Night’s Flight Over Edo–” Saburouta

— As an honest young man who doesn’t lie, he’s an innocent role mistaken for committing murder.

Everyone of the cast members have vibrant personalities, and we got to hone these roles to make their personality stand out deeper, and for me the task is to create this colourless, transparent, clarity in this role. How should I play as a good young man who would never kill anyone and present it to the audience and to the other characters. Because he doesn’t have flaws, so a single mistake may not make the impression memorable to someone, that thought was very intimidating to me.

— So how did you dig deeper into creating this role?

I felt relieved that everyone helped me by thinking that this man is not someone who would kill others, so I would try to show a greater smile, I’d do my best to be on time, I would deliver what I’m saying clearly…and I’ll do everything of these actions to make people think I’m a good man. But it’s not just thinking that he’s a good person, even when he was being beaten up and punched, he was someone that had a strong will and thoughts for the one he loves, I can’t miss those parts either.

“CASANOVA” Priest Marino Barbi

— He’s part of the clergy, but he’s made a move on several women and got into jail – Priest Barbi. He’s probably someone difficult to relate to, but how did you feel?

I think he’s a cruel guy, he misused his position as a priest to tempt other women (LOL). For me, even though I’m always aiming for people telling me that I’m “so cool”, the musumeyaku would also scream and leave, and I would be belittled and I thought is this okay!? (LOL). Even now, I’d still say that “I liked this role” yet also think if I could have received a little cooler role!?, this is probably his charm.  The result of being the one who understood him the most [as the actor playing him] is in the end still thinking, “I just comforted the woman a little and yet I was jailed! Even though I did nothing wrong!” (LOL)

— Barbi broke out of jail while cooperating with Giacomo Casanova played by the then-Top Star Asumi Rio-san and the interaction of lines you two had was memorable.

At first, everything was already uttered quickly (LOL). I couldn’t grasp correctly how the scene where he first met Casanova was like in jail, so we rehearsed together many times. on stage, I’d think constantly that I have to do this correct every day, but I’d also make use of whatever new things are happening on the performing day. Being able to learn and act alongside Top [Star]-san is something that I’m very grateful for. Even for Barbi, meeting with master [Casanova] was like transforming my life into rose colour (LOL).

“I LOVE EINSTEIN” Thomas

— This performance shows a world where people could not live without androids, how was this rare imaginative world view to you?

There were some ways in acting that were difficult, and this was Tani (Takaya)-sensei’s debut work, so Sensei worked with us together to discover more about this musical in the classroom. Even the smallest kind of questions were in my consideration. But when I finally realised what Sensei wanted to portray was the “love” in Takarazuka musicals, that felt a closer approach for me.

— When the protagonist Albert who looks like human is also an android himself, that was a shocking development.

Even though this was clearly shown in the last of the first act, when I read the script, I was also very shocked. Thomas was the younger brother of Mileva and the wife of Albert who died in an accident of inventing the android. Then after his sister’s death, [Thomas] was the character who continued to help Albert in creating the android together. In order to know how this all happened, he found two pen caps in a box at his home which were named “Dr Albert” and “Sister”. After that, since Thomas always loved playing with dolls, now he wanted to try speaking for himself. He’s happy when he sees these “two people” in his hands, but he realised that this was something he made up…he’s a sad character. Even though this involves some role play, but I really discovered much from this role and found this profoundly interesting.

No.3 — Minami Maito Choosing The No. 1 of Flower Troupe

Challenger No. 1 — Reaki Mira

She has such skillfull hands! knitted my name on this parker [bomber jacket] with the font from the song “DYNAMITE” of my favourite group BTS. I wondered if she asked for a professional to help her do this! and I’m really happy that she did this so beautifully and challenged this difficult task for me. I can feel her love.

—— REPLY: I’ve been enjoying making these for a long while, and I want to do this well to profess my love for Minami-san by doing this task, so I demonstrated this challenger spirit! I’m so happy that you liked it and felt that way!!

Communication No. 1 — Hozumi Mahiro

Even though this was during the Special Live “Aqau Bella!!”, if it wasn’t for her, I probably would have failed as an MC. Since we’re both quite shy people, it took us quite a while to get along well and talk more to each other, but I respect her for having a great choice in words and the way she speaks is amazing. I think this is agreed by everyone, right?

—— REPLY: We’re truly shy, but I think it’s because I’m able to break through the barrier and share everything to Minami-san (LOL). I’ve always been careful with my choice of words, because I want to express my feelings well with my diction and dialect.

Strong mentality No.1 — Mihane Ai

She’s another person that I respect. Speaking of strong mentality, if there’s something that doesn’t go right, she’s very strict on herself, and is hardworking when engaging in performing arts. She really doesn’t give in on anything. Even if she’s listening to my little advice, her attitude and her perseverance is so very adorable.

—— REPLY: Ah~~~~ I’m so happy~~! I can’t say anything except for thank you… I really thought I was living through the days when I didn’t like how vulnerable I was…I will work hard even more!! Minami-san, I love you!!

Samurai Spirit No.1 — Kaga Ririka

I immediately thought, this would be Ririko-san (Kaga)! Of course she’s like that on stage, that even if she’s already a beautiful person, but inside she’s very manly!  This is an impression that hasn’t changed ever since [Takarazuka] Music School in our Yokasei-Honkasei relationship. I love Ririko-san who doesn’t change and is often directly progressive and moving forward.

—— REPLY: For me who wasn’t so capable, the only thing I could do was continue to push in what I do. I wonder if this is inherently a personality of mine. But I was able to show that side of myself because Maiti (Minami) would always come over and talk to me with a wide and open heart!

Gentle No. 1 — Kureha Maki

Maikotsu has always been this amazing person on stage. I often think that she looks like an English gentleman!? She so tender and she has that god-winning talent of finding the right timing to call to others. I think that she can express her gentle gaze to her partner as well.

—— REPLY: I never thought of myself like that, so receiving such comment just made me laugh out loud, like “It can’t be~” (LOL) But since Minami-san said to me, “now you should continue to show your best stage appearance to the readers  and the audience”, I will continue to work hard!!

| waking up, you turn and face your boyfriend who was on his phone. grabbing his hand, he turns to you and says "good morning beautiful" and gives you a kiss on your head. You two had plans to go out for breakfast but now looking at the time, it would be brunch already. you apologize to joshua for waking up late but he doesn't mind it. he already thought ahead and ordered lunch already. you go and do your morning routine, followed by going back to the bed to cuddle wih joshua until the food arrives. You two watch some going seventeen episodes. The morning is filled with laughter and happiness.

| you wake up, turning to see your notifications on your phone. after, you turn and face your sleeping boyfriend. he isn't one for much affection so you two sleep with very little affection. either intertwining your hands or legs. feeling like cuddling, you lay on his chest and try not to wake him. you soon head a deep breath being taken, noting that he has woken up. he chuckles after seeing you on his chest and makes the comment "so clingy in the morning aren't you jagiya?" you whine and hide yourself in his chest, he quickly kisses your temple and tries to get you off since hes not used to this type of affection. he failed and all he could do was to turn away and blush. You took your phone and started taking pics of both of you. he tsked and turned away, trying not to be in the picture, and he failed again.

| you usually don't wake up first but surprisingly you did. you decide to get payback for all the times seungkwan had pranked you. you take the bluetooth mic and connect it with your phone and play mansae at the highest volume. you start rapping vernon's part confidently. your boyfriend jumps and almost falls off the bed after hearing the loud noise. a prominent frown on his face. he goes "YA" angry that you disrupted his beauty sleep. You finish the song, managing to avoid all the pillows getting thrown at you then switching off the mic and greeting seungkwan a "good morning" with a giggle. he frowns at you and turns away, arms crossed on his chest. you giggle and straddle him, showering him with kisses. He tells you to stop multiple times but you say you wont till he stops being 'mad'. giggles and laughter were heard from your house, you really love your diva boo.

Favorite color: Yellow, but not an overwhelming yellow, like that soft warm yellow? I love it. People tend to not expect this answer, I think I give off more of a blue or grey vibe. Honestly a pretty grey/silver is probably my second favorite color, but a buttery yellow is just so good for the soul.

Last song: You Give Love a Bad Name by Bon Jovi. Danced to it in the kitchen, got consumed by the guitar riffs, nearly knocked a chair over. Before this morning it would've been the Genshin OST... I've been listening to it a lot while I write or do chores recently.

Last movie: An exceedingly mediocre romcom on Netflix that I watched with my sick mom to be nice. Genuinely couldn't tell you the title or more than like, two or three plot points. Last movie that I watched bc I wanted to was the Barbie movie, which was genuinely better than I expected. Enjoyable but would still give it, like, a mixed review. I'm not getting into two months' ago Barbie Movie Discourse on this post

Currently watching: I'M STILL TRYING TO FINISH THE UNTAMED!!!! woobifiedvillain i'm speaking directly to you and quoting you: i too am "chronically incapable of paying attention to visual media, even the good shit" and when i try to explain this to people irl they act like i am insane!!! I haven't watched Good Omens season 2 yet even tho I am reblogging posts about it rn. I think it's mostly adhd, or really just a part of the larger Neurodivergence Soup (tm) that makes it nearly impossible for me to learn something from a YouTube video. I mean, sometimes for a hands-on task a video is essential, but can't there be a written list of instructions to go with it too, bc that sticks in my mind way better sobs... ANYWAY i'm currently on episode 43 of The Untamed, so I should be able to finish it by, like. The end of the year at least lol?

Currently reading: I started reading SVSSS recently because, like. The mxtx mania is in full throttle. I just got here a little later than most people lmao. I'm also currently "reading" like seven different books that I bought or pirated this year and have on hold. One of my Unfortunate Skills is bingereading like 200 pages of something in 1-2 days and then not finishing the rest of it for 8 months.

Currently working on: Keep My Shadow Alive, my big xue yang-centric fix it fic!!! Well, more like a fix it, and then break it more, and then eventually actually fix it fic. Starting from the canon divergence of "Add Pre-Teen Xue Yang to the Burial Mounds Fam" and going from there. I read every fic like that that's on ao3 and was still being eaten alive by the brainworms so I started writing my own take on it and ~6 months later it's the longest fic I've ever written and only 25% of the way through its outline???? So. Who knows if it will get finished (my track record is admittedly not great)- but I've had such a blast writing it so far. Xue Yang is just SO fun to write. Yes it has a plot and character arcs and I could even go full English Major* and start telling you about its Themes, but also it's just an excuse to write Xue Yang interacting with every member of the MDZS cast. Going to STOP talking now bc I fully am the type of writer who will get carried away talking about their wips.

*i am not an english major, but spiritually i am an english major.

Current obsession: Yeah uh, MDZS. My friend convinced me to finally read it in January of this year, and the hyperfixation train has simply not stopped since then. Genshin Impact also dragged me back in with the Fontaine update and I've been having a lot of fun playing it. But MDZS is still mostly the thing that's eating up my RAM. Particularly the Yi City crew, but 3zun is rotating in there too. Sometimes even The Man WWX Himself, i talk about him less but i do love him a lot also lol

Naruto.. is… well.. nothing's happening…just flashbacks that made me REMEMBER my mourning. Next week though, something will happen. Hopefully. ANyway..

BLEACH…. STILL AWESOME. Urahara is AWESOME. He is my favorite character. #1 favorite in BLEACH. AWEEESOME…… ..his future's not looking too good though. but. oh well. i him. He is AWESOME. I think he'll survive though. ….REALLY hope so. anyway. [or i will forever hate JUMP since aparently.. JUMP mangas hate me so much they take my fave characters away from me….. JK]I JUMP too.. and LALA.. a bit. lol…. i'm more on the "Action" side rather than the "shoujo" type..anyway.

I'm Cyr, I recently rejoined tumblr for the sole purpose of enjoying/sharing gay SU shi since i've started rewatching it a few days ago :>

I go by any pronouns though I do prefer they/them, I'm 19 (uni comp sci student zz), I am pretty sure i have ADHD lol, and I am a big yuri/shoujo-ai enthusiast >:^) must watch all yuri... RAHH

I also draw! I'll post doodles here and there under the tag #myart, and as aforementioned it'll mostly be SU since that's what I'm currently into c:

My favorite pairings in the show are PearlRose and Lapidot so far (they have been since I first watched SU over 9 years ago HELP), whereas my favorite gems are Pearl and Lapis Lazuli. Best diamond is Yellow Diamond, she's shitty I know but gawt damn is she GORGEOUS and poWERFUL, although a close second is Blue Diamond for her design more-so than her character. As for the humans, Connie and Sadie are great! I hate Lars tho he's a dickhead fuck that MF >:T Once I finish the show I'll try to figure out a favorite episode, too (unlikely, I am very indecisive HHH). The farthest I've reached was season 4 a few years ago, before the last seasons and movie came out.

SU aside, two other pieces of fabulous media I really like atm are Sasameki Koto (that's where my pfp, cover(?), and the images above are from hehe) and Touhou Project (infinite shipping possibilities and amazing OST yes yes. Currently I really like kagumokou and maripatchy).

Outside of fandom stuff, I really like music. I can listen to just about any kind of music, though my favorite genres fall under EDM (mostly speedcore, breakcore, j-core, hyperpop, jungle, house, industrial, and other variations of techno. Anything that's loud basically :P) Other than EDM I like some indie rock, classical instrumentals, and trying to get into k-pop :>

1. How long have you been creating KakaIru fanworks?

Hmm. I started writing KakaIru around, 2021. So that makes it 2 years now

2. What are you working on right now?

Lol, I have so many on my WIP docs. Maybe a handful? Though, Currently I am trying to finish ‘IRUKA’ that I started writing last year.

3. What is your favourite trope to create for?

I am not quite sure, but recently I’ve been reading lots of Omegaverse mangas and reincarnations. So currently I kinda want to write a fic around those. But I can’t promise. Oh, but when I started writing KakaIru, I was very much into genderbend stories. That’s why I have lots of Kakashi-Iruka fics with Iruka as the opposite gender, or the other way around. But mostly with Iruka as a woman.

4. Which of your creations is your favourite, and why?

That’s a very hard question. Hahah. I get embarrassed by most of my fics. But I do have one. I wrote a fic called ‘Rumor’. Where a female Kakashi is trying to court a dense Iruka. I just thought it would be fun to write Kakashi as a girl, but with Iruka being too soft, kind and a gentleman. Kakashi had to take matters into her own hands. And I like how it ended. It’s also funny how Iruka was trying to stop the rumors circulating about him and Kakashi, and ended up with…welp. No spoilers. hehehe

5. Do you have any WIPs you’re excited about?

Oh, definitely. I do have. IRUKA. I know I already mentioned how there’s no Good ending. But I am still excited to finish writing the last chapter, to which I can’t promise when I will post. Had a busy month, and recently I’ve been into this online game that I used to play back in 2007.

6. Do you have any original characters? If so, tell us about them!

Honestly, I am not much for OCs. unless, they are very likable. But I prefer creating one just for the flow of the story? Like the one I created….not sure which one either. I created a few random OC’s. hahahah

7. What was your hardest piece to create, and why?

The hardest piece would be this one, ‘Wrong decisions begets…’ I wrote this fic for a gift during the ‘Springtime of Romance: Youthful Passion’. I honestly had a hard time on how I should end the story, thus why there are two endings. Hahaha. Also it might have been the first for me to write a fic with a different plot. I usually go with soft, romance, genderbend. You know the good kind, cuz they are easier to write.

8. Do you have any favorite scenes from something you’ve created?

Favorite scene. hmmmm. I do have some but the top on the list was on the fic ‘Pure’ where toddler Kakashi observes Baby Iruka, and is still a papa’s boy. Also Sakumo is there.

9. Where does your inspiration come from?

I am not sure… But maybe when I’m bored or when I am in the middle of something. mmm…But every time I watch Naruto, I always get inspired by some episodes, and decide to write one with a twist. Or when I read something amusing about KakaIru, and would plot something involving what I learned about the characters. Sometimes fan art gives me ideas too. In other words, it just sprung out at random times and I do enjoy writing. Writing, in a way, is a stress reliever for me too, and it’s enjoyable to play out my thoughts in writing.

10. Which of your creations is the most meaningful to you, and why?

I think it’s the very first fic that I wrote with KakaIru. ‘Iruka’s Hair tie’. It has a bit of memory from the past. A bittersweet one. Lol. But when an artist that I am subscribed to liked that fic. It made it more meaningful for me, and kinda boosted my happiness with writing. She also did another art based on another one of my fic, so I was even more happy.

Lots of Comics, Manga, and Movies

Hey folks! I hope you all had a fun Halloween. Thanks everyone who joined my discord and enjoyed werewolf movies with me this October. It went well enough that I'm gonna do a werewolf movie each full moon. Join me November 8th at 5pm PST to watch the 1994 movie Wolf.

This past month I mostly worked on crowdfunding prep. If you didn't know, I'm in charge of making sure all the pieces of Iron Circus's crowdfunds are ready. And Iron Circus's Smut Peddler Double Header crowdfund is closing out the year on Backerkit's new platform. So there was a lot of last minute changes I had to do. And on top of that, I was typing up the script for a promo video for Iron Circus's next anthology Failure to Launch (which I've also been posting pencil versions of my story's pages on my Patreon). That's gonna crowdfund in February. So it was a bit of a juggle act. I've also finished penciling Murky Water. I will probably finish inking it this or next week. The next City Between story is gonna be about vampires. It still needs a title. There are a few options but I am still thinking it over. Titles are always hard. 

Just last weekend I saw Wendell and Wild, which was fun ride! If you are unfamiliar, it's a stop motion animation coming to Netflix soon. It stars Key and Peele as the titular demons and they are summed by a young girl to resurrect her dead parents. The movie has one or two too many subplots, so the pacing is a little wonky. But it is enjoyable and lovely. Here's the trailer. I'm still doing my usual art streams on my twitch and cohosting the Iron Circus Geekshow. Out of our recent streams, I particularly like this episode where we talk about where the line between sci-fi and fantasy is. Spoiler, the answer is it's based on vibes. Also, Spike and I both really like the game Rimworld. It just got a big update/DLC. Streaming going well has made Spike and I start talking about doing a charity stream on Christmas day. I'll have more updates on that next newsletter. But it should be a fun time. 

As for November, I mentioned I'm gonna finish inking Murky Water. Then I will finish drawing my story for Failure to Launch. With those both done, I can get back to drawing You are the Chosen One. Both can be read on my patreon. Those will be the main highlight of my art streams. Off stream, I'm still editing for Seven Seas. The mangas I've been editing are hitting books stores quicker. There is a very cute queer romance I edited titled I'm Kinda Chubby and I'm Your Hero. If I had to pick one title I'm editing for seven seas to pick up, it would be that one. It's about a chubby actor getting his first fan. Said fan turns out to be a handsome pastry chef. They grow closer and it's very cute. I also got to finish writing my graphic novel with Meredith McClarren this month. So I'll be pretty busy. It's a good thing there aren't any conventions this month or next month. Morrigan Watches: Doctor Who - The Day of the Doctor

So, this is the second time I'm typing this post, and I hope to God that I manage to get it all down this time and not have it all disappear like last time, but I just finished watching this episode, and the only thought that's going through my mind right now is AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, because even though I've seen this episode about 4 times now, it still makes me feel some kind of way.

I don't even know how to put into words how I feel about this episode. The way it shatters my heart and heals it all at once. They way it makes me laugh, and want to cry. In my mind, this episode means more to me than any episode of any TV show ever will. And not just because of the plot, or how it's written, or the fact that I get to see David Tennant and Billie Piper again, but because this is the episode that got me into Doctor Who to begin with.

Yes, that's right. It wasn't the first episode I watched (I started with Nine like everyone should), but it was the reason I started watching the show at all.

In elementary, a friend of mine was hosting a party to watch the 50th. Since I hadn't seen the show, I couldn't attend. (Was that shitty? Maybe, but that's not the point.) Not wanting to be left out, I started watching Doctor Who, and I fell in love. I'm still in love, and every few years I fall in love all over again. So, thank you to The Day of the Doctor for getting me here.

And of course, I can't make this post without noting that this year is the 60th anniversary of the show. Doctor Who, I love you, and I can't wait to see where (and when) the show goes next.

[long rambling essay about specific details under the cut.]

There's so many details about this episode that make me lose my mind, but I'll try and be at least semi-coherent.

Firstly, this episode is quite possibly my favorite episode of the whole show, because it does such a good job of tying everything together. Working the Zygon Invasion plot seamlessly into the War Doctor's decision. The effect that it has on all three versions of the Doctor. The way that, after 7 seasons of hints and mentions, we finally get to see the day the Doctor pushed the button. (and as an added bonus, after 4 seasons, we finally get an explicit reason why Queen Elizabeth the First was mad at the Doctor in The Shakespeare Code.)

And the way they tied Capaldi in, not just via his little cameo, but also by giving him The Zygon Invasion / The Zygon Inversion plotlines, which are a direct follow-up to this episode. So, he's still involved, still making his mark.

The fact that all three of them, even the one who forgot, and the one who could never forget, were ready to push that button, so that the War Doctor didn't have to be alone.

The way that Clara was the one who noticed, who knew that the War Doctor hadn't done it yet, even though Ten and Eleven assumed he had. The way she was the one who convinced them to go and help him, or maybe stop him.

The way the Moment took Rose's form, and therefore confirmed that she is quite possibly the most important person who ever has or ever will travel with him.

And the look on Ten and Eleven's faces when the War Doctor said "Bad Wolf Girl, I could kiss you!". You could see both of their hearts stop, their brains freeze. They didn't have much time to think about it, but I can guarantee that if Ten in particular had remembered that encounter, those words would have haunted him for centuries.

The way the War Doctor told Ten and Eleven that he was proud of the men they were, even though they became that way by believing they had burned Gallifrey.

And the way that Ten and Eleven, who had been so adamant that the War Doctor wasn't the Doctor, and never would be, called him Doctor, because they understood. They didn't hate him anymore. They knew he did what he could, and together they found a way to fix it.

And Ten's last words being "I don't want to go." nearly broke me, because I never wanted him to go to begin with, and now I got him back, if only for an hour, and I have to say goodbye again. (And as a bonus, Eleven saying "he always says that" because he remembers the regeneration.)

And the under-gallery being the Curator's TARDIS. (I mean, seriously, the hexagons on the wall and everything!!)

The way Ten and Eleven went from mocking each other to being so confident and synchronized when they were setting up the peace treaty, because they knew now, that they were the same man, and they could trust each other.

And of course, the infamous "You redecorated. I don't like it." and the bit about the round things, and you can just see the pure joy on David and Matt's faces, because they're having the time of their lives, one last time.

I love this episode more than I can put into words, and I could spend hours talking about it, but I love it dearly, and I just want to say,

Happy Anniversary, Doctor Who.

the weather here was so nice over the weekend (26°c yesterday!!) but now it's gone down to like 15°c again :(

i'm obsessed with stardew valley hehe especially after the new update, i go through phases of playing it a ton and then not playing it for like a year! i tried playing fortnite but i wasn't very good at it hahah, my favourite games are story based or open world like The Last of Us, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Horizon Zero Dawn are some of my all time favourites but i also like a good cosy game like Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing 😌 ooh another one i'm really into is The Long Dark which is more of a survival game but i'm obsessed with it

i really recommend attack on titan!! i never watched it when i was younger either, i just always vaguely heard about it on tumblr etc but yasmin watched it and she really liked it and in january at some point i came downstairs and she was rewatching the first episode and i was like oh this is kinda cool and then got really really into it! if you like sort of dystopian/post-apocalyptic type things it's really good, i'm sad we've finished it now

Contrary to my expectations, I am more positive about Book 3 now that I have finished the show. What's quite unfortunate about Book 4 is that it has a very strong start but then loses its stakes once Korra has her breakthrough with Zaheer. It stops being about Korra from that point onward, and more about the merry bunch that has to stop Kuvira - and there's way too many characters involved in that for the show to give meaningful screentime to everyone.

I really wanted to like Book 4 considering its good start and focus on Korra's PTSD journey, but I think the final battle would have benefitted greatly from holding Korra's healing off until the very end. This is because the moment that happens there is no longer any tension left for the final battle; from then on it's a matter of when Korra will go into the Avatar State, not if. Consider Book 3, wherein it is uncertain until the final moment if Zaheer can even be defeated. The characters have to overcome a great difficulty, exacerbated by the fact that the usual ace is debilitated. With Kuvira, you kinda know beforehand that the characters will succeed, thus there isn't really any tension about the finale.

With the quality decline towards the end, you end up nitpicking at things you wouldn't have noticed otherwise. Once again what stands out is the way the season wastes time in some places and then speeds through things that needed more time. There are moments where I wish they would have spent more time on Korra's struggle to tap into her spirituality, and give her more time to struggle before she succeeds. Instead, the premature payoff leads to the show having to kill time on redundant moments. There are THREE gag characters this season (Varrick, Bolin, Wu). Someone in the writing team was really into this type of humour, but at some point it is overdone and beyond exhausting.

Watching the two books consecutively, I'm surprised that there is no mention of the Red Lotus before timeskip, considering that by the end of Book 3 they openly wonder if there are others out there. This seems like a missed opportunity to have a continued storyline, with the show instead opting to present a new threat. Though I can understand they made this choice so as to show that the world has tangibly changed since Korra left it behind, to not have any reference to the Red Lotus seems a bit at odds with how much their actions changed the world.

What Book 4 needed, in my opinion, was less time. I think they ended up with too much time on their hands and that's why the season ultimately suffers in the second half. Upon this rewatch I had the same feeling in my gut as I had a decade ago: "I literally don't care about how this ends." I was just waiting for things to get over with to make this post. That's just really unfortunate - watching a series finale should not feel like a chore.

So yeah, Book 3 is miles better than Book 4 simply because it keeps it stakes high until the end. In some regards they suffer from the same writing hiccups, but because the highs in Book 3 are consistent you are more likely to forgive the lesser parts. In retrospect, Book 3 should have been 20 episodes and resolved both season storylines.

A personal nitpick I've always had when LOK aired was the odd focus on Korra needing to suffer throughout the books to "learn". Each Book ending with Korra going through worse situations had a weird vibe of her needing to be knocked down a peg. Having skipped Book 2 and now watching 3 and 4, I retract some of my frustration about this. Looking at it now, Korra's arc through PTSD was a very beautiful thing to showcase - especially with her being a woman of colour. I see now that this storyline was quite unique at its time. That said, the final commentary on "needing to suffer" still rubs me the wrong way. There is suffering, and having to work through it to come out of it better, but an innate meaning to suffering itself feels very wrong to present.

And then there's Korrasami. It's clear that the ending improves the optics of Book 4, which would have otherwise ended in a very mundane and inconspicuous way. Instead, this ending is etched into collective history and opened many doors that brings us to where we are today in terms of representation. I've thought many times about the following thesis: Was it better to have the amazing LOK ending of Book 1 without Korrasami, or the okay LOK ending of Book 4 with Korrasami?

I've watched the series ending many times this past decade and it continues to be one of the most beautiful and emotional things out there. Yeah, I would have personally preferred a LOK that was consistent in its quality throughout. But had the team been given 4 seasons from the start, they probably would not have had the time to sit with the idea of Korrasami and gradually consider it seriously. If this is the hand the team was dealt, then I'm glad an 'okay' story was at least given the best ending possible.

Week 7

So I tried making a completely new story because my original idea was just way too ambitious for the amount of time I have and where my skills are currently. Writing my script like this is difficult, it's hard to keep up with the flow of ideas that pop into my head and write them out in this style. I've tried looking up some videos online on how to write a screenplay but they're so long, 10 to 15 minutes, when all I really want to know is how do I format my words when describing the setting, where the camera is, and characters actions; which does not take 15 minutes to explain, just say if it's bold or italicized and where I should align these things. I started getting somewhat of a writer's block, I know the story I want to tell but describing it to others is difficult.

Finally finished Keep Your Hands Off Eizoken, it was actually pretty useful regarding this project. I went more in-depth in my week 5 post regarding the plot, but I didn't really get a chance to talk about the characters themselves. I really related to Asakusa because often I will have this idea for a video that I really find enjoyable but once I start typing out ideas I start to think, "People will think this is cringe" and then I start to pivot away from what I originally wanted and I slowly start to lose passion for it. That's when the producer, Kanamori, steps in to stop Asakusa from pivoting and procrastinating not because she's a concerned friend but because they are trying to make a substantial business. Mizusaki also has the same struggles as Asakusa because she is very much a perfectionist, she doesn't care that average people won't see the cut corners of their projects because she cares about the anime enthusiasts that will and in return it creates a lot of stresses on her and the team. It is relieving to see that this is something that all artists share on a professional level and it's not an exclusive thing to me. But despite these personal challenges we are still able to make amazing works that can have everlasting impacts on people.

I went to a Redshift meeting Wednesday night that was about making zines. I've never made a zine before and loosely know what they look like so I thought it would be a good idea to go because I think I'm going to have to make a zine eventually for my Capstone or if not for some project in the future. It's a pretty easy process especially when you have the proper tools so it only took like 5 minutes to make the booklet itself. Afterwards, I didn't really know what to do, I saw people writing in their zines but I wasn't really sure what to do for mine so I just made a comic. This was an eye-opener for me because it showed that I can still tell a story without developing a script first or with super amazing drawings. I'm not a reader and certainly not a writer so why was I trying to create a story the way a writer would. So I'm going to work backwards from how I usually do things which is making the visuals first and then I'll write the script around those visuals.

This is a podcast episode that my capstone professor recommended to the class to help us get over our roadblocks in doing research and experiments for our capstone. I am definitely a perfectionist, usually whenever I do an edit in a video that I'm really proud of I will watch that one edit hundreds of times as I'm working on the video just to make sure it has absolutely zero mistakes which you can tell causes a lot of delay. I definitely feel that perfectionism is getting in the way of me trying to learn digital art or animation, it is a mixture of making sure I find the perfect program and trying to use my time more efficiently, which is ironic cause I never make time in my schedule to try and learn Krita. My OCD definitely plays a part in this but not everybody in my class is diagnosed with OCD so there is something more at play here which up until this podcast I couldn't quite put my finger on it. It's that feeling of failure that I'm desperately trying to avoid, there are two instances in my life that really stick out to me when it comes to trying to make creative projects. There was one video that I made with my friends called "Why I Haven't Uploaded in a While", I was really excited because up until that point I was only making videos by myself and it was going to be a parting gift for my friend Brett who was going to the military in a couple of weeks. However, I soon realized that explaining the ideas in my head to a group of people is a lot harder than expected and as they got frustrated I got even more frustrated, not to mention I wasn't prepared for the battery in my camera to run out or the SD card to get full. I was just such an asshole, it was supposed to be a fun thing me and my friends would do before we all went our separate ways after we graduate but the video never came out the way I wanted it to and it's just a bad memory for me even though I'm still friends with these guys to this day. Another video I made, called "I'm Innocent", took me several months to make and it's where I really pushed myself in terms of editing and why my skills are so good today. I still consider this video to be my magnum opus even though the subject matter and jokes would probably get me in trouble today but I'm still really proud of what I was able to make. But when I sat down to watch it with my friends they didn't laugh at a lot of the jokes that I thought they would find hilarious and it didn't get a lot of views on YouTube. For a while after that, I was just so discouraged from making another project because of that feeling of failure constantly lingering in me, just waiting to rise up again. It wasn't until I had a video project for my "Moving Image: On Screen" class that my passion for video-making resurfaced. The fact that I treated it more as a project that had to get done before a deadline rather than a masterpiece that would define me for the rest of my life really helped me get things in motion. There were a lot of rewrites and a lot of last-minute touches but I got several compliments despite it not being as perfect as I wanted it to be. So the point of this very long tangent is that you can't always focus on the optimal route and that doing something is better than doing nothing.

Finally, I have a story! It took me a while but I finally got something out of my head and onto paper. Here's the premise, everybody's brain likes to constantly remind them of the embarrassing things they did years ago but I feel that I tend to think about them way more than other people do and I certainly react a lot more violently. I will swear at the top of my lungs, I will smash my fist on my desk as hard as I can, I will punch my own head, and sometimes I just want to shoot myself. In this storyboard, we have a character who is trying to go to sleep but the brain cells in his brain find a huge bag of VHS tapes with all his embarrassing memories and they start watching them. As the brain cells watch these tapes the main character gets more and more uncomfortable and agitated. The brain cells find these tapes hilarious and continue to watch and rewind them at the expense of the main character's sanity. Eventually, the main character has enough and heads toward his closet, meanwhile, the brain cells run out of VHS tapes from the initial bag but don't worry they drag in another huge bag. When the closet door is opened we see a shotgun and some shells; the main character grabs the shotgun, starts loading it, and puts it in his mouth ready to pull the trigger. Meanwhile, the brain cells are loading up another tape as they sit back with their popcorn in hand readily anticipating what's about to play. However, they are shocked to see that it is a happy memory and as soon as that happy memory plays the main character takes the shotgun out of his mouth with confusion, as if he just snapped out of a trance. The Brain Cells realize that this bag is filled with only happy memories which to them is boring and walk away from the TV out of lack of interest. The main character finally has peace in his mind and as he stares at the clock he smashed earlier he sees that despite its cracks and discrepancies it still functions and with that, he happily goes to sleep.

Writing a script for this became 1000 times easier with the rough storyboard by my side. I also found the Rick and Morty scripts from season 1 which gave me a reference as to how things are formatted in a screenplay for an animation. Every time I had a hard time trying to describe a scene I would just look at the storyboards and describe what I see there. This method allowed me to focus more on the dialogue for this animation since I purposefully left it out of the storyboard for that reason. I want to see if people can tell what the story is about just from my rough drawings and because I'm not 100% certain if I am going to use embarrassing moments from my life or use embarrassing moments that people can relate to but if I ever do decide to change it it will be easier to edit this way.

REFLECTION:

There was a lot of progress this week, I feel that this breakthrough of working backwards has lifted a lot of tension off my shoulders and I also feel like I'm halfway through this project. Obviously, I need to get some second opinions before I put things into motion but at the very least I have something I can use to practice character animation or start recording myself so that I can see if my scenes work.

Top five things that entertain you rn (could be shows, film, or maybe interactions, an event going on?)

1. Letting my friend play some of my fave games through parsec! We're mainly playing Zero Escape and Monkey Island. We have more games we want to play together but that list of games we're in the middle of should be kept short so we could actually finish them. It's really nice to have someone to hang out and introduce to your fave games :)

2. Playing detective type games with my sister. We always read out dialogue in character if the game is a VN/doesn't have voice acting, and it's genuinely fun. I think we compliment each other the way we solve puzzles, there's certain things she knows how to solve and I don't, and vice-versa. We like to say we're like a Sherlock and Watson type of duo (she is Sherlock, obviously). We completed almost every Frogwares Sherlock Holmes game. She doesn't have stable connection to use parsec, though, so for the time being we had to shelve Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One :/ (she has to be the person playing because she's Sherlock in our duo lol)

3. My mum brought a couple books from Poland, and I'm reading one right now, it discusses mysterious deaths of polish nobles, ones we're not entirely certain as to the cause because not everything was chronicled or accounts vastly vary. It's not a very light read by any means, but it does give me a pretty good short break from writing my thesis if I don't want to/don't have time to boot up a game. I can't remember the title though, I don't have the book near me whoops

4. My cousin forcing me to watch shows and films that I don't like so we can harp on them lol

Rn they are

- The Vampire Diaries - i find the lore overcomplicated and the romance kinda boring. not that you can't like it, I just really don't like it lol

- Akademik (polish) - my cousin loves one character ironically (Zdzisiu) so we're watching it for him and him only

I also used to be forced to sit down and watch the newest episode of Riverdale if i was anywhere near him when he was launching the episode, but that is no longer the case

Also, Teen Wolf, which i am not a fan of, but he used to be a huge fan

Sometimes we watch cringe polish films, most recently i think we watched Listy do M.?

As for good shows I watch though, my sister and I are watching Psych (I love Gus and Lassiter) and Always Sunny, though we mostly don't have much time to set it up long distance due to my thesis

5. I like to play Baldur's Gate 3 and HOMM3 when I'm alone to chill out. HOMM6 and HOMM7 if i want to torture myself mentally, and Project Diva and Colorful Stage if I desperately crave hand cramps for some reason. As for games I have to stop myself from trying to play, but desperately want to, Fable games. I never played fable 2, never finished fable anniversary, and never had an evil run in fable 3. But that means I need an Xbox Ultimate subscription for cloud play, since I don't have access to my Xbox360 and I don't own fable 2 (WHY is fable 2 an Xbox exlusive AAAAH) and this month I can't justify the subscription because I don't have enough time to play to make it worth it. But once I publish my thesis I'm playing Fable 2 for sure

× The Immortal John Triptych series (Four Last Things, Procession to Calvary and upcoming Death of the Reprobate) by Joe Richardson. Comedic in tone and the game uses art as its assets, kinda Pythonesque in those regards. The two games that are out are rather cheap and a lot of fun, but you may want to wait until Death of the Reprobate is out to buy it in a slightly cheaper trilogy bundle if your game budget is a bit small. You can probably complete each of the games that are currently out in about two hours or so, so totalling four or five hours for both, depending on how good you are at adventure games. Iirc it features artistic nudity, though, so bear that in mind. The games can be played independently of eachother, but you may miss some references and jokes. Other than that, narratives are relatively self contained. Procession to Calvary was quite fun even though I haven't played Four Last Things before I played it.

× Darkside Detective and Darkside Detective: a Fumble in the Dark - features supernatural elements, stylised pixel graphics. Contains at LEAST THREE jokes! It has self contained small cases, they're a good casual experience. You could probably solve a case while taking a 45 min. - 1hr. break from something else.

Management Sim:

(WARNING FOR CANNIBALISM AND MURDER)

× Ravenous Devils - Sweeney Todd inspired indie game from Italy. You play as a wife and husband who manage an Inn and Tailor shop. The Tailor shop kills clients to supply the inn with meat for various dishes. It's cheap and fun if you like management sims and you're okay with gruesome themes, but it's also a bit buggy and the story mode is a bit short, ESPECIALLY if you're good at management sims. Though the devs are making an endless mode update sometime in the future. Warnings: murder, (non-consentual) cannibalism, one character confesses to incestuous feelings in a letter. Villain protagonists. Don't play if you're not okay with those themes.

From ones i have mentioned:

if you like/are ok with VNs and like puzzles, the Zero Escape trilogy has a delightfully overcomplicated plotline and has multiple endings with branching storylines.

There's 6 in Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. 22 (28) endings in Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, and 32 (23 are game overs) endings in Zero Time Dilemma. VLR is my fave among those three. Characters are very easy to like most of the time. Certain characters will make you hate them in some situations, and love them in others. 10/10. Warnings: Features death and gore (mostly described rather than onscreen) in certain scenes. Certain storylines have obligatory deaths as part of the plotline. Sigma Klim has a massive monster dong (mention only).
