Hello! I was wondering if you had anything on Y Gododdin 😃
hey! fellow gododdin enthusiast! what a delight
i presume this is a request for reading recommendations - i don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, or how accessible these will be, but i’ve tried to cover most bases here. i WISH there were more literary criticism, maybe there is in the welsh-language scholarship and i just haven’t found it?
it’s entirely possible that i will have missed some obvious things here, i’m mostly sticking to stuff that i personally have read. if something mind-blowing has come out since the last time i did gododdin reading then it’s not here, i’m afraid!
but enough disclaimers. on to the recs!
text and translation:
for a translation, i cannot recommend enough joseph p. clancy’s translation as found in the triumph tree: scotland’s earliest poetry, 550-1350, ed. t. o. clancy (1998). this is fantastic. it’s poetic, it’s a joy to read, and having used it as part of a deep read last year where i went through the welsh text in detail i am honestly AMAZED regularly at how well clancy handles the many translation issues that arise. it’s loose, and it doesn’t translate every single stanza unfortunately, but for the spirit of the poem you really can’t do better
that said, if you need another translation to check against/to fill in the gaps, i’d recommend kenneth jackson’s the gododdin: the oldest scottish poem (1969). it’s a prose translation, so it’s harder to use in conjunction with the text, but it’s pretty clear and accurate
text-wise... things get complicated. honestly, the best edition is probably still ifor williams’ canu aneirin (1938), in terms of faithfulness to the words on the manuscript page. (i also really enjoy his textual commentary, but it is in modern welsh so not accessible to everyone.) the major problem with it is that you are not going to get the stanzas in the order they appear in the manuscript - he reorders them into groups of perceived variants. this also makes it harder to distinguish between the A-text and the B-text. AND it means that the stanzas are not in the same order as in any of the translations!
if you can get hold of it, i really really think it is worth having daniel huws’ llyfr aneirin: a facsimile (1989). the introduction is SO useful for understanding the manuscript context, and it comes with gwenogvryn evans’ transcription of the book of aneirin, which you can compare with williams’ edition if need be to work out where a stanza actually goes.
there’s a conspectus of editions which i think thomas owen clancy put together but i cannot for the LIFE of me remember where it is - if you think you’ll need it, PM me and i’ll see what i can do
dating, textual criticism and historicity:
t. m. charles-edwards, wales and the britons, 350-1064 (2013), chapter 11 - this is from more of a historical perspective than a strictly linguistic/palaeographical/dating perspective, but it’s a really good general introduction and i definitely recommend starting with it. if you read nothing else, read this. this whole book is a godsend
t. m. charles-edwards, 'the authenticity of the gododdin: an historian's view', in astudiaethau ar yr hengerdd, eds. bromwich and jones (1978), pp. 44-91 - this kind of lays out the standard view which everyone has been deconstructing ever since. we don’t know anything about what’s going on with y gododdin, but at one point we thought we did know something and this was what it looked like
d. n. dumville, 'early welsh poetry: problems of historicity', in early welsh poetry: studies in the book of aneirin, ed. b. f. roberts (1988) - and HERE is the deconstruction! a pretty good overview of the issues with “knowing anything” when it comes to y gododdin
p. sims-williams, 'dating the poems of aneirin and taliesin', zeitschrift für celtische philologie 36 (2016), 163-224 - i don’t have any notes on this and haven’t read it recently, but i remember it being good (it’s sims-williams so of course it is). almost certainly contains linguistics, but is probably also written readably
o. j. padel, 'aneirin and taliesin: sceptical speculations', in beyond the gododdin: dark age scotland in medieval wales, ed. a. woolf (2013), pp. 153-75 - if you can stand linguistics talk, padel does his best to make it understandable here and gives a good overview of the linguistic arguments for and against suggested dates for y gododdin. this whole book is actually very useful
g. r. isaac, 'canu aneirin awdl LI', journal of celtic linguistics 2 (1993), 65-91, AND 'readings in the history and transmission of the gododdin', cambrian medieval celtic studies 37 (1999), 55-78 - DEEP IN THE TEXTUAL CRITICISM. honestly, my poor attention span means i find it hard to pay attention all the way through these two, but if you want a really in-depth look at the possible relationships between the A and B-texts of y gododdin, this is the way to go
historical discussion and background:
charles-edwards in wales and the britons chapter 11 again
j. rowland, 'warfare and horses in the gododdin and the problem of catraeth', cambrian medieval celtic studies 30 (1995), 13-40 - this is a pretty cool look at the role of cavalry in y gododdin and while i don’t agree with all of it, i think it’s really useful reading if you’re going for a historical take on the poem
p. m. dunshea, 'the meaning of catraeth: a revised early context for y gododdin', in beyond the gododdin again, pp. 81-114 - makes some ESSENTIAL points re the question of: is catraeth catterick? moreover, IS CATRAETH A PLACE?
c. cessford, 'northern england and the gododdin poem', northern history 33 (1997), 218-22 - a historical perspective on the poem with some very useful points, comparing the situation as sketched out in y gododdin with what we know of the area at the time
m. wood, 'bernician transitions: place-names and archaeology', in early medieval northumbria: kingdoms and communities, AD 450-1100, eds. petts and turner (2011), pp. 35-70 - a welcome look at the archaeological and place-name evidence for what was going on in bernicia as it changed from a brittonic to a germanic-dominated area. really useful to have in mind both when reading the poem and when reading more literary history
r. collins, 'military communities and transformation of the frontier from the fourth to the sixth centuries', in the same book, pp. 15-34 - pretty fascinating look at the earlier background running up to the time period depicted in y gododdin, and the possibility of continuity between the roman occupation of hadrian’s wall and the post-roman era there. useful social/archaeological perspective!
f. h. clark, 'thinking about western northumbria', in the same book, pp. 113-28 - an early medieval english perspective on the area at the time, useful for comparison and completeness’ sake
literary discussion:
ifor williams, lectures on early welsh poetry (1944) and the beginnings of welsh poetry, ed. bromwich (1972, 2nd ed. 1980) - THE CLASSICS. an old-fashioned, not to say outdated, viewpoint, but that’s because this is the guy who INVENTED the viewpoint back when it was new! even now there’s a lot of good stuff packed into these and ifor williams’ prose style is a real pleasure to read. not to be missed
a. o. h. jarman, 'the heroic ideal in early welsh poetry', in beiträge zur indogermanistik und keltologie, ed. meid (1967), pp. 193-211 - likewise somewhat old-fashioned now, but lays out the classic viewpoint well and makes some good literary points. it may also be worth reading the introduction to his edition/translation, aneirin: the gododdin (1988). (i don’t recommend using it as an edition because he conflates the A and B texts and renders the text into modern welsh - this means it reads very smoothly but is quite a bit further away from what’s on the manuscript page.)
h. fulton, 'cultural heroism in the old north of britain: the evidence of aneirin's gododdin', in the epic in history ed. davidson, mukherjee and zlatar (1994), pp. 18-39 - a pretty interesting read, about the mindset expressed in the poetry, its purpose and its construction
this isn’t lit crit but i’m putting in my favourite g. r. isaac quote from his article ‘gweith gwen ystrat and the northern heroic age of the sixth century’, p. 69: ‘Koch writes that the Book of Aneirin’s ‘immediate milieu is… not the Celtic Heroic Age, but the High Middle Ages’, as if the ‘Celtic Heroic Age’ were a period of comparable historical status to the High Middle Ages. This is not the case, however. A ‘heroic age’ cannot be the ‘immediate milieu’ of any literary production, a ‘heroic age’ cannot produce literature, because a ‘heroic age’ is itself produced through literature (taken in the broadest sense). It is a literary product. The Homeric epics are not the product of  a Bronze Age Achaean heroic age, but vice versa. The Irish Ulster Cycle is not the product of an Iron Age, pre-Christian heroic age, but vice versa. And the medieval Welsh poems of ‘Aneirin’ and ‘Taliesin’ (and Triads, sections of the Historia Brittonum, and much else) are not products of a sixth-century North British heroic age, but vice versa.’
honestly there just is not nearly enough lit crit for y gododdin, in english at least, especially to explain cool shit that the welsh text is doing that isn’t visible in the translation, and/or things that could be subversive or ambiguous about it - so, i don’t know what your level of engagement with the medieval welsh text is, but if you’re curious, if you want to know more about what’s going on in a specific stanza (or which stanzas are extended puns), or just which things i’ve been dying to yell about all year, PLEASE message me and I! WILL! YELL!
articles which are almost certainly good and useful but it’s been too long since i’ve read them to say:
t. o. clancy, 'the kingdoms of the north: poetry, places, politics', in beyond the gododdin again, pp. 153-75
m. haycock, 'early welsh poets look north', likewise in beyond the gododdin, pp. 115-52
FINAL NOTE:
one of the problems with translations is that they give an impression of way more certainty about the meaning of the text... than is actually there. you’re pretty safe with clancy or kenneth jackson, but tread carefully. again, i don’t know your level of engagement with medieval welsh, but if you want to know if there are any major textual issues with a stanza, hmu and i will gladly consult my copious textual notes! but in general, BEWARE of basing anything too heavily on the following groups of stanzas:
A40, A41, B5, B6 (Am drynni drylaw drylenn; Clancy ‘For the feast, most sad, disastrous’)
A42, B25, B35 (Eur ar vur caer; Clancy ‘Gold on fortress wall’)
A48, B3, B24 (Llech leutu tud leudvre; Clancy ‘Standing stone in cleared ground’)
A62, B14, B15, B16, B36 (Angor dewr daen; Clancy ‘Anchor, Deifr-router’)
the Gorchanau if you’re interacting with those, especially the Gwarchan Maeldderw - if anyone tells you they know exactly what is going on in these, do not believe them. isaac has a full translation of the gwarchan maeldderw in cambrian medieval studies 44, and it’s useful, but i’m not by ANY means completely convinced by it, so tread carefully.
the more stanzas there are in a group of variants (or at least a group that shares lines), the more likely it is that those stanzas are going to be SUPER DUPER TEXTUALLY FUCKED UP, is a pretty good rule of thumb.

11 Writers Who Really Loved Cats
                         BY Sean Hutchinson
They say that a dog is a man's best friend, but these writers found solace—and occasional inspiration—in another four-legged companion. Celebrate International Cat Day with these feline-loving scribes.
1. MARK TWAIN
Tumblr media
Mark Twain—the great humorist and man of American letters—was also a great cat lover. When his beloved black cat Bambino went missing, Twain took out an advertisement in the New York American offering a $5 reward to return the missing cat to his house at 21 Fifth Avenue in New York City. It described Bambino as “Large and intensely black; thick, velvety fur; has a faint fringe of white hair across his chest; not easy to find in ordinary light.”
2. T.S. ELIOT
Aside from peppering his high Modernist poetry with allusions to feline friends, T.S. Eliot wrote a book of light verse called Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, a collection of 15 poems, dedicated to his godchildren, regarding the different personalities and eccentricities of cats. Names like Old Deuteronomy, the Rum Tum Tugger, and Mr. Mistoffelees should be familiar to people all around the world—the characters and poems were the inspiration for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running Broadway musical, Cats. Later publications of Old Possum's included illustrations by noted artist Edward Gorey—yet another avid cat lover. You can listen to Eliot read "The Naming of Cats" here.
3. ERNEST HEMINGWAY
Tumblr media
Ernest Hemingway and his family initially became infatuated with cats while living at Finca Vigía, their house in Cuba. During the writer's travels, he was gifted a six-toed (or polydactyl) cat he named Snowball. Hemingway liked the little guy so much that in 1931, when he moved into his now-famous Key West home, he let Snowball run wild, creating a small colony of felines that populated the grounds. Today, some 40 to 50 six-toed descendants of Snowball are still allowed to roam around the house. Polydactyl felines are sometimes called “Hemingway Cats.”
4. WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS
Tumblr media
William S. Burroughs is known for his wild, drug-induced writings, but he had a softer side as well—especially when it came to his cats. He penned an autobiographical novella, The Cat Inside, about the cats he owned throughout his life, and the final journal entry Burroughs wrote before he died referred to the pure love he had for his four pets:
“Only thing can resolve conflict is love, like I felt for Fletch and Ruski, Spooner, and Calico. Pure love. What I feel for my cats present and past. Love? What is it? Most natural painkiller what there is. LOVE.”
5. WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS
Though not overt, William Yeats’s love for cats can be found in poems like “The Cat and the Moon,” where he uses the image of a cat to represent himself and the image of the moon to represent his muse Maude Gonne, a high society-born feminist and sometime actress who inspired the poet throughout his life. The poem references Gonne’s cat named Minnaloushe, who sits and stares at the changing moon. Yeats metaphorically transforms himself into the cat longing for his love that is indifferent to him, and the heartsick feline poet wonders whether Gonne will ever change her mind. Too bad for Yeats; Maude Gonne never agreed to marry him, despite the fact that he asked for her hand in marriage—four separate times.
6. SAMUEL JOHNSON

CARL COURT, AFP/Getty Images
Known to be a general cat lover during his life, this 18th century jack-of-all-trades was immortalized in James Boswell’s proto-biography The Life of Samuel Johnson. In the text, Boswell writes of Johnson’s cat, Hodge, saying, “I never shall forget the indulgence with which he treated Hodge, his cat: for whom he himself used to go out and buy oysters, lest the servants having that trouble should take a dislike to the poor creature. I am, unluckily, one of those who have an antipathy to a cat, so that I am uneasy when in the room with one; and I own, I frequently suffered a good deal from the presence of this same Hodge.” Although Boswell was not a fan, Johnson called Hodge “A very fine cat indeed.” Hodge is immortalized, with his oysters, with a statue of his likeness that stands outside Johnson’s house at 17 Gough Square in London.
7. CHARLES DICKENS
One of most important and influential writers in history, Charles Dickens once said, “What greater gift than the love of a cat?” He would sit entranced for hours while writing, but when his furry friends needed some attention, they were notorious for extinguishing the flame on his desk candle. In 1862, he was so upset after the death of his favorite cat, Bob, that he had the feline’s paw stuffed and mounted to an ivory letter opener. He had the opener engraved saying, “C.D., In memory of Bob, 1862” so he could have a constant reminder of his old friend. The letter opener is now on display at the Berg Collection of English and American Literature at the New York Public Library.
8. NEIL GAIMAN
The author of American Gods and The Sandman kept regular updates on his blog of the everyday eccentricities of the group of cats—including Hermione, Pod, Zoe, Princess, and Coconut—that he kept at his house. Though he hasn’t written much about them recently, the love and affection that come across in the posts from 2010 and earlier show someone who is absolutely an animal lover in all respects.
9. PATRICIA HIGHSMITH
Patricia Highsmith doesn’t have the friendliest literary reputation around (she once said “my imagination functions much better when I don't have to speak to people”). But The Talented Mr. Ripley and Strangers on a Train author nevertheless found a perfect way to let her imagination function with her many four-legged companions. She did virtually everything with her cats—she wrote next to them, she ate next to them, and she even slept next to them. She kept them by her side throughout her life until her death at her home in Locarno, Switzerland in 1995.
10. WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS
Imagist poet William Carlos Williams also worked as a doctor to supplement his writing career, which would eventually culminate in a 1949 National Book Award for Poetry and a posthumously awarded 1963 Pulitzer Prize. His direct style tried to capture the essence of small moments in everyday life, and it’s no wonder he uses a cat to conjure a simple scene in his poem entitled “Poem (As the Cat)”:
As the cat climbed over the top of
the jamcloset first the right forefoot
carefully then the hind stepped down
into the pit of the empty flower pot
11. RAYMOND CHANDLER
Raymond Chandler had an immense influence on detective fiction and came to define the tenets of hard-boiled noir. He used femme fatales, twisting plots, and whip-cracking wordplay in his evocative classics starring the detective Philip Marlowe, including The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. But it wasn’t all serious business for Chandler because—you guessed it—he really loved cats. His cat Taki gave him endless enjoyment, but also occasionally got on his nerves. Here’s a passage from a letter Chandler wrote to a friend about Taki:
“Our cat is growing positively tyrannical. If she finds herself alone anywhere she emits blood curdling yells until somebody comes running. She sleeps on a table in the service porch and now demands to be lifted up and down from it. She gets warm milk about eight o'clock at night and starts yelling for it about 7.30.”

welp, gang! not only another year is coming to an end, but it also marks the end of a decade. i’ve been drawing for over 10 years now, so i figured i should do a decade of art just to show off my work over the years!
if you want to read my retrospect of each year, it’ll be under the read more! heads up, it is a bit of a doozy.
TL;DR: just all around happy with how much i improved over the years and i can’t wait to see what 2020 will bring!
2009 (11-12 yrs old)      at this point, I’m on my second year of drawing (both traditionally and digitally!) This year mainly consisted of either oc art or drawings of my best friends at the time, but there was some fanarts sprinkled here and there. I also did my first animation piece around this time too tho it’s private now :3c i may show it off one day...
2010 (12-13 yrs old)     I got my first drawing tablet for Christmas 2009 and this is when i went ham on my digital drawings. this year was kinda weird i guess? i started experimenting a more cartoony style on some artworks, though the majority are still anime inspired.
2011 (13-14 yrs old)     ah yes...... the year i found out about homestuck.... well, i found out about it on the second half of the year. the first half was all about my ocs. this was because around this time (or late 2010? i dont remember exactly) i discovered flipnote hatena, where I did tons of animations including my ocs. but once i discovered homestuck, that was all i posted for a while lol. this was also the year I made my tumblr account. oh and I also lost my tablet pen for a few months so some of the drawings from this year were made with a mouse.
2012 (14-15 yrs old)     I started falling out of deviantArt and became more active on tumblr. I mellowed out on the homestuck drawings a bit and posted other stuff. this year was kinda similar to 2010, where my artstyle was kinda all over the place. the second half of the year I discovered a super obscure browser dating sim called Star Project and became a part of the roleplaying community so plenty of my artworks revolved on my muse Souta and the game as a whole. 2013 (15-16 yrs old)     this year was really quiet in terms me posting art. i had been constantly doodling both traditionally and digitally but I never got around to posting the majority of them. this was mainly because I was so busy with school. on the flipside however, I discovered Earthbound and i hecking fell in love with it ♥
2014 (16-17 yrs old)     still relatively quiet but i posted more than 2013 lol. Earthbound drawings galore! i also did posted more oc work, including my gal Usako. I haven’t posted her anywhere in a long time though. i have been redesigning her and i’ll show it off sometime in the future!
2015 (17-18 yrs old)     ahh, here we go! now we’re picking up the pace! i graduated from high school this year and started posting more often. splatoon came out this year and I was constantly drawing them squidkiddies! (tho tbh my rin and len drawing is my fav) this was also the year I got Manga Studio (an older version of Clip Studio Paint) but I still used Paint Tool Sai. this was also the first year i did commissions!
2016 (18-19 yrs old)     this year was really interesting tbh. lots of really neat works and i started to do more backgrounds. this was also the year I (attempted) to do my webcomic! i haven’t updated that thing in a long time tho. I want to reboot it one of these days. but anyways, good mix of fanart and oc works. really, this year was great.
2017 (19-20 yrs old)     this was the year i made this very art blog and my instagram account! (which i haven’t advertised here at all but here’s the link lol) i think it was around this point i found my own artstyle that i want to more or less stick to! of course, it was going to change overtime, but compared to the years prior, my artstyle at this point has been more consistent. this was also the year i attempted to start an oc askblog with a friend of mine but it haven’t gone far ;w; def want to try again one of these days!
2018 (20-21 yrs old)     this year was also really nice! i moved to a new university to get a major in animation. quite a few persona 5 and kingdom hearts drawings here and there since i was like love with both of those games (even tho kh3 wasn’t even out at that point, but i was still hyped omg) i also introduced Cimmaria and Nicktornal for a future story that i’m currently developing! i also made a full move to Clip Studio Paint after Paint Tool Sai wouldn’t load on my new computer.
2019 (21-22 yrs old)    last year of the decade and i left it with quite a bang! I def posted more often. i did missed a few months, but then i would come back with a bunch more works to post! I discovered Artfight from a friend so that kept me busy during the month of july! made a couple more animations too since of course i will be doing more of it for university.
So, what’s my 2020 art resolution?
Def want to keep posting! try to go for at least 4 artworks per month, one for each week.
experiment more on backgrounds, perspective and composition!
post more oc artworks! i haven’t been posting much about them for the past few years but I really want to change that. there is one oc i am definitely introducing to you all! here’s a hint: it is a Dungeons and Dragons character. I will show them off when the time is right uwu
continue developing on story ideas and sticking to it! i’ve noticed that i usually start on projects only then to drop them later on. I really want to revive them and work on it!
continue working on animation! if all goes well, i’ll be taking animation classes in fall of 2020 so i need to start prepping more!
and of course, continue improving my art!
that’s all i have in mind! if you got this far, thank you guys so much for reading this wall of text lol. I promise that will do as much as I can to fulfill these resolutions! onwards to 2020 and beyond!!

Windows On Mac :: Installed Parallels Desktop Coherence - Taskbar Keeps Disappearing
Sep 21, 2010
OK, so in July I returned to Apple with the purchase of the MacBook (modified bliss on that front) and I have now splurged the extra bucks for the new Wireless Mighty Mouse. Learn how to change the double-click and scrolling speed of your Apple Magic Mouse, Apple Magic Trackpad, or the built-in trackpad on your Mac. In Apple Support Communities. See all questions on this article See all questions I have asked Apple. Adjust double-click and scrolling speed of your mouse or trackpad. More ways to. Home Forums > Parallels Desktop for Mac > Windows Guest OS Discussion > HELP, having issues with mouse/pointer in AutoCAD running in parallels Discussion in ' Windows Guest OS Discussion ' started by Evan_T21, Sep 20, 2013. I know this isn't really related to what this forum does, but I don't know where else to look for help. I bought a new computer (HP notebook G62) and the mouse is off by 1/4 inch. If this has already been posted, I appologize. I did search this forum first. It seems that my Parallels always is 'losing' the mouse. It is specifically bad within Internet Explorer but happens in other windows within Parallels as well. How can I calibrate a joystick on a Mac? Ask Question. How can I emulate keyboard and mouse commands with a game controller? How do I calibrate a Gamecube controller? How to charge my PS3 SixAxis controller? Can't calibrate generic usb gamepad right thumb.
Yesterday, I have downloaded Parallels Desktop to my Macbook Pro, and my brother brought a CD of Windows 7 to install there. At first, in the coherence mode, the taskbar was working amazingly until I turned off my computer. When I turned it back on, Windows 7 started to run, and the taskbar started to disappear and reappear after awhile. Then I restarted Parallels, then the taskbar completely disappeared. I have tried to modify its settings, and it still didn't work. So, I changed the coherence mode to window one, the taskbar was there. And then I changed it back to coherence, it disappeared again. What should I do to get it back in the coherence mode?
Windows On Mac :: Mouse In Parallels With Two Cursors
May 8, 2007
I've never used Parallels, but my girlfriend has it on her iMac. I installed Theme Hospital for her but when you try to play it the mouse goes absolutely crazy, flying from edge to edge. When I put Parallels in a window I could see what was happening. There were two cursors on screen; the Theme Hospital one and another one. Whenever the other (normal XP style) one hit and edge of the window the Theme Hospital one would jump to there, and then they'd swap around a bit when I moved it back. Also, is there an easier way to put Parallels in a window? The only way I know so far is to drop the resolution from standard in XP, then press cmd+Q and cancel.
Hardware :: Mighty Mouse Pointer Stopped Responding / Green Light On Bottom Of Mouse Flashing
May 1, 2009
I know that the general consensus here is that the Mighty Mouse is a piece of shit. That notwithstanding, I'd appreciate posters refraining from engaging in further elaborations on that concept when replying to this topic (i.e., no comments like 'Buy a new mouse,' please). At any rate, I purchased a wireless Mighty Mouse about a month ago and was very happy with it until the batteries apparently died. One day the pointer simply stopped responding and the green light on the bottom of the mouse was flashing. I replaced the batteries and the mouse resumed normal operation. Then, a few days later it happened again. I have yet to re-replace the batteries and have reverted to using my now eight-year-old Logitech dual-optical mouse (possibly the finest peripheral I have ever owned). Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is this mouse having internal hardware or software issues or is it normal for it to devour batteries at this rate? System Preferences says that Bluetooth is maintaining the connection properly, so I am ruling that out as an issue. I would just say to hell with it, and use my Logitech mouse full-time, but my wife hates it and I payed seventy goddamn dollars for the Apple product.
Windows On Mac :: Wireless Keyboard & Mouse Recommendation For OS X - Parallels - Bootcamp?
Nov 19, 2009
I am looking for a wireless keyboard/mouse to replace my current USB wired to fulfill the following requirements: 1) Must Work with OS X, Bootcamp and Parallels. 2) Work with Windows XP (currently) and Windows 7 in future. 3) Whatever wireless technology, I only want ONE receiver for both KB and mouse. 4) bluetooth or NANO or other 5) Keyboard MUST be high contrast (example-black keys/white letters). This precludes current Apple keyboard. 6) Would like NOT to mix and match brands.
IMac :: Mouse Pointer Moves By Itself?
Mac Cursor
Aug 26, 2008
I just got my iMac, and I have a problem with mighty mouse. Sometimes, when I move the mouse just a little, the pointer will 'jump' to one side of the screen... it's very frustrating. Is it due because my mousepad has different colours on it ? That's my only explanation. Maybe the mousepad different colours cause reflection on the pointer that make it jump all over the screen...
MacBook Pro :: How To Use Black Mouse Pointer
Jun 30, 2009
The story behind it - I used it a bit at home, connected to the AC adapter, then closed it and put it in a laptop bag (quite tight on both sides - like a sleeve [you have to slide the computer out - it doesn't open]). Then it was in the bag for 10-15minutes, I took it out, opened it up and this came up! (while it was like this, I could see the black mouse pointer and move it about just fine) I did a hard restart, and then everything was fine.
OS X :: Icons Get Stuck To Mouse Pointer
Jul 18, 2010
Sometimes, if I click an icon (usually on my desktop) it'll just 'stick' to the mouse pointer, it'll appear as if I am still clicking and holding the icon, and it drags around. I also can't trash, drop or do anything with it. Other programs on the computer can't be used either because it's still using that icon. I'm forced to use keyboard commands to restart Finder or press the 'esc' key, which works until I click any other icon again. This happens with text and pictures also.

OS X :: Icons Stick To Mouse Pointer But Won't Drop
Apr 23, 2010
Somehow I can't drag and drop files/programs/icons any more. Not on my desktop, not within my dock. When I click on an icon to drag, it will stick to my mouse pointer, but only as a ghost. When I try to release it, it won't drop to the designated area or folder. The icon just keeps sticking to my mouse pointer, where ever I take it. Only after using esc and clicking. Hardware :: Mouse Pointer Freezing - Need To Unplug
Feb 7, 2010
I have a IMac G4 mod. Power mac4,2 operating system osx version 10.411 processor 800 MHz 768 MB SDRAM. Every now and then my mouse pointer freezers up and I have to unplug the mouse and it starts working again. If it does not unfreeze I have to restart. Then I am back in business. Some times the whole screen goes gray with a black square-telling me to shut down and restart.
Mac Pro :: Won't Work / Mouse Pointer Screen Freeze
Jun 14, 2008
I have just installed a new Mac Pro. Everything works except I get occasional mouse pointer freezes. They last for about 1 second each time and seem to occur randomly, on average with 1-2 min intervals. The only things I have installed on top of OS X so far driver wise is MouseWorks to power my Kensington trackball. I use my older large full-keyed white Pro keyboard and only use the smaller wireless one remotely. I have tried deactivating Bluetooth but the mouse freezes still persist.
IMac :: Mouse Pointer Out Of Control - Not Allow Clicks
Apr 27, 2009
Today I was working with my iMac without any problem, suddenly the mouse pointer start behaving very odd, when I tried to click an icon, menu or whatever the mouse start moving not allowing me do the work, I changed the wireless mouse suspecting was a hardware problem but when I connected the USB mouse I got the same problem, then I shutdown the iMac but after starting I got the same problem. I suspect is a trojan virus but I heard that Leopard operating system is very robust and virus is not currently a problem.
OS X Mavericks :: Mouse Pointer Not Always Changing On Mouseover
Sep 6, 2014
I have an issue with my mouse that started a few days ago. My cursor doesn't always change properly when I mouseover certain things. For example, when I hover it above a link, it turns into a pointing hand like it should, when I navigate to the URL bar, it will stay as the hand even after clicking for a short while before changing to what it's supposed to become (the thin bar.) Sometimes it will remain a thin bar when it's supposed to be a black arrow, and so forth. I've tried troubleshooting the issue, but I haven't found much of relevance. One user seemed to be experiencing the same thing albeit only in some pro software I don't use. Mine is system wide. I'm using the trackpad on a 2014 baseline 15' rMBP running Mavericks 10.9.4. IMac :: Mouse Pointer Tracking Speed Very Slow
Mar 17, 2009
I just opened my brand new 2009 24inch IMac! The Mouse pointer speed is very very slow. I adjusted the tracking speed to the fastest possible, but this is still under par. I typed my question in google and it directed me to download a program called 'Mouse Zoom' which was downloaded onto my... 'Desktop.' I didn't click the icon to run it because I am afraid of a virus. Is 'Mouse Zoom' safe to click on? Will it fix the problem, or is there an alternative to this issue? I cant imagine something so nice being crippled by something as simple as mouse speed.
MacBook :: Mighty Mouse Pointer No Longer Working?
May 6, 2009
I've been using my M Mouse successfully with my MacBook until recently when the Mouse Pointer no longer moves. The button does engage the dashboard and if I position the cursor using the MacBook trackpad, then the click function of the mouse does work. I have tried changing the batteries. It appears I am having a similar problem when I use a wired mouse. Just in case it's connected, I run Parallels and did recently upgrade Windows software.
Hardware :: Making Mighty Mouse Pointer Use More Precise?
Oct 31, 2009
I just made the switch to Mac. I just got the new macbook pro 15 inch. The only thing is that I bought it mainly for graphic design and I am struggling to use the might mouse. I feel like I have to work so hard just to get the mouse over the icon or tab that I want to select. When I was using a PC the mouse was so much more precise if I wanted to select something or click on something small it was easy. Is there a setting or something to make it easier on the mac using the mighty mouse?

OS X Mavericks :: Bluetooth Mouse Pointer Works But Can't Land Anywhere
Jun 5, 2014
It is happening more and more often: When I start my iMac the mouse pointer is moving normally but when I click on, say, Finder nothing happens, or when I click on the Dock nothing happens. It will not stay or land on any app. It is just hovering and nothing seems to be affected by the mouse pointer. I turn the mouse off and back on and it works fine. So it is an erratic behavior which baffles me. I have read numerous cases in the discussions and all point to a PRAM reset. Will a PRAM reset delete or revert modifications I have made to my iMac, such as disabling the startup sound, via sudo? I don't mind restarting the mouse but it is a hassle Info: iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)
MacBook Pro :: Trackpad Keeps Bouncing The Mouse Pointer When Tap To Select

Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac
Virtualization
Show More
When I last reviewed virtualization software in 2008, I found Parallels Desktop 4 for Mac effective, but saddled with a bit of bugginess and lacking some DirectX support. Parallels 5 Desktop for Mac (I tested build 9308) solves both problems, while adding features and improving performance.
Among the most notable of those new features: a much-faster virtualization engine; automatic compression of Windows’ hard disks; a new virtual machine manager; and a new lockdown mode, which requires a password to exit full screen mode, make changes to the virtual machine state, or manage snapshots (perfect for system administrators who don’t want end-users mucking up their machines).
Installation, setup
I tested Parallels Desktop 5 by using it to install Windows XP Pro, Windows 7 Ultimate (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions), and Ubuntu Linux 9.10 on my Mac Pro (2.66GHz quad core with 8GB of RAM, running OS X 10.6.2).
Installing both Windows and Linux is easy in Parallels; it has assistants that automate the process for both. It also installs Parallels Tools, which handles the task of mouse integration between the guest OS and Mac OS, as well as allowing easy guest desktop resizing by resizing the guest OS window.
There are a couple aspects of installing guest OSes that could be improved. First, every time you create a new virtual machine, Parallels creates an alias to that virtual machine on your OS X Desktop. There’s no way to avoid this, so if you find the aliases useless (as I do), you have to manually remove them each time you create a virtual machine.
More troubling is that, when creating a new Windows virtual machine, the default settings are for full integration of the Mac OS and the Windows guest—the default even sets the Windows’ user folder to the Mac’s Users folder. As someone who has personally experienced Windows malware infections, total integration is not something I recommend for most virtual machine users, and yet it’s the default behavior in Parallels.
Parallels also defaults to booting Windows virtual machines in the fully-integrated Coherence mode, where the Windows desktop vanishes, and Windows’ windows are intermingled with those of OS X. For someone expecting a standard Windows interface after installation, this can be disconcerting.
The basics
Like Fusion 3, Parallels 5 now supports Windows Aero in Windows 7, and also includes OpenGL 2.1 acceleration in both XP Pro and Windows 7 (Fusion only supports OpenGL 2.1 in Windows XP Pro). In addition, OpenGL acceleration is included in Linux guests, enabling full visual effects (such as windows that deform when dragged) in Linux systems such as Ubuntu 9.10. More usefully, you’ll also be able to run Linux programs that require OpenGL acceleration. Parallels is alone in its support for OpenGL 2.1 in Linux and Windows 7. I found the Aero effects worked very smoothly in Windows 7 on my Mac Pro.
As with its competitors, Parallels handles typical office productivity applications with ease, in both Windows and Linux. Microsoft Office (Windows) and OpenOffice (Linux) both ran well, and had no troubles with the mixture of spreadsheets and documents I tried opening and editing in both. Web browsers and e-mail clients also performed well; if this is the extent of your virtual machine needs, Parallels 5 will easily meet your requirements.
Parallels 5 was also the fastest of the three programs I tested in the vast majority of the benchmark tests I ran—including the all-important real-world tests. Whether it was copying files to or from the Mac, or expanding zip archives, Parallels easily outpaced its competition. As one example, copying 2.5GB worth of files from the Mac to a Windows 7 machine via a shared folder took just over a minute in Parallels. That same task took nearly two minutes in VirtualBox, and about a minute and a half in Fusion.
Suspending, waking, booting, and shutting down were all quickest in Parallels, too. There’s a small caveat there, at least with suspending. When I tried sleeping the machine while a 3D game was running, it worked, but the game didn’t work after waking from sleep. In Fusion, the same experiment worked just fine—so one tradeoff of the faster sleep time in Parallels is, at least in my testing, an inability to sleep and then resume a 3D game. As a user, you’ll have to decide whether the faster suspend times in general are worth this tradeoff when trying to suspend an in-progress 3D game. (This may not be an issue with all games, but it was in the two I tested with.)
Like Fusion 3, Parallels 5 offers improved multi-monitor support, treating two displays as separate monitors in Windows, and as one large gargantuan display in Linux. Adding a third screen to the mix worked perfectly in Windows. In Linux, however, the third screen was seen by the system (the horizontal resolution reflected its existence), but it was all white, and I couldn’t see anything that I dragged onto that screen.
To make working in full-screen mode easier, Parallels 5 lets you specify behaviors for mousing into the four screen corners—you can switch to one of the other available view modes, or show the Parallels menu bar. Once you’ve set a behavior for a corner, moving the mouse into that corner will “peel down” and reveal a bit of your OS X desktop. Unfortunately, there’s no visual indication of what happens if you then click the mouse, so you’ll need to remember which corner you’ve assigned to which task.
New looks for Windows
Parallels 5 features a new view mode, Crystal, along with a new Mac-like theme for use within Windows. Crystal view mode takes Coherence mode one step further. You won’t find the Start menu or task bar anywhere in Crystal mode—in fact, you won’t even see the Parallels Desktop icon in your Dock. Instead, a menu bar icon lets you change view modes, see the Windows Start menu, or work with attached devices. You’ll also find your task bar icons (optionally) in the menu bar, and Windows Applications folder in your OS X Dock. Any open windows will be integrated with your OS X windows, as in Coherence mode.
Crystal mode works reasonably well, though you can’t Command-Tilde to toggle between multiple windows of the same Windows’ application, nor can you use Snow Leopard’s Dock Exposé mode with Windows’ windows. Both of these features work as expected in Fusion. I also found that dragging windows around in Crystal mode, when using an Aero theme in Windows 7, was quite laggy on my Mac Pro. I had much better results after I disabled Aero in Crystal mode (you can control this in the virtual machine’s Settings).
I experienced some strangeness when I had Windows Media Player window open in Crystal mode, and then used Exposé’s All Windows mode. In addition to the opened windows, I also saw three “ghost” windows for Windows Media Player, and some visual distortion was visible in the Excel window.
Selecting any one of these “ghost” windows would simply switch to Windows Media Player, so it wasn’t a critical issue, but it definitely looks odd when using Exposé.
The second new look for Windows in Parallels is MacLook, which is actually an OS X-like theme for Windows (XP, Vista, and 7). You apply MacLook via the View menu, and Parallels then works for a minute or two to install the theme. The objective is to make Windows less visually shocking for someone switching between the Mac OS and the Windows OS.
While that’s the idea, I think MacLook fails fairly badly in achieving the goal.
Because not every element in Windows is themable, what MacLook winds up giving you is a series of different-looking windows within Windows—some look something like OS X windows, others look like native Windows windows, and still others look like some strange Frankenstinian mixture of the two.
Some windows are square, others are rounded; none seem to have shadows and some are missing edge borders; some have the red/yellow/green buttons from OS X at the top right, some at the top left, and others lack them completely.
I can’t imagine that anyone who likes and uses the OS X interface regularly will find MacLook to be an improvement over the stock Windows theme—at least there’s some consistency there, and the windows all mostly look the same.
When I unchecked the MacLook entry in the View menu, which should disable MacLook, I had some issues in Windows 7—the uninstall process didn’t quite complete, leaving an even odder mix of window appearances. I was able to resolve that issue by using the Personalization section of Windows preferences to pick a stock Aero theme.
Graphics and gaming
Parallels Desktop 5 has a very good engine for gaming. I had excellent results with older games, and very good results even with more-recent releases. The demo version of Call of Duty 4, which I was unable to run with decent frame rates in Fusion, ran acceptably (albeit at minimum levels of detail) after some tweaking in Parallels.
With OpenGL acceleration in all main versions of Windows (and Linux), Parallels can handle programs that the other two virtualization apps just aren’t capable of running at present. In addition, Parallels’ OpenGl implementation, as measured in the Cinebench benchmarking test, was the fastest of the three programs in any version of Windows. (All game tests were done in Windows 7, to stress the virtual machine as much as possible.)
Calibrate Mac Battery
Parallels also does an admirable job with DirectX games in Windows. For example, I was able to play the MotoGP 08 demo with good frame rates in a 1024x768 window, though the audio did stutter a bit.
More impressively, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, a program that just a few years ago required a high-end PC to run at all, ran admirably well in Parallels. The audio was mostly stutter free, and the frame rate in a 1024x768-sized window was more than acceptable in the missions I tested.
That’s not to say I was getting anywhere near the frame rate I’d get if I were to reboot my Mac and run Flight Sim X natively via Boot Camp. However, for someone who doesn’t need every bit of speed in their games, the loss in frame rate may be worth the convenience of not having to reboot.
Most older games run very well, so much so that there’s no reason to reboot via Boot Camp to play “vintage” titles. Note that some older games may need to run on older versions of Windows; Windows 7 won’t run all your older games.
Given what was possible in gaming and graphics with the first version of Parallels a few years back—basically nothing—it’s amazing how much progress has been made in a very short period of time.
Multimedia performance
Tumblr media
To test Parallels’ media handling, I watched a 1080p Windows HD media file in full screen mode in each version of Windows. I was watching for visual glitches, listening for any disruption in audio playback, and tracking CPU usage to see how each virtual machine handled the task.
In short, all three of the Windows OSes handled the HD video file without any major issues. The one-CPU Windows 7 box had a bit more variation in frame rate than did the two-CPU machines, but it was very hard to spot unless watching the video back-to-back (which I did, many times).
Other features and observations
This version of Parallels cleans up the installation on a Mac—in prior versions, Parallels’ virtual network drivers were visible in the Network System Preferences panel. In Parallels Desktop 5, those drivers no longer appear, preventing possible user confusion.
Also new in Parallels 5 is support for Apple’ multi-touch gestures (swipe, rotate, pinch) using an Apple Magic Mouse or the trackpad in a multi-touch capable Apple laptop (you can also use an Apple Remote for some basic control, if you wish). Parallels Tools takes care of the communication between the mouse/track pad and the guest OS, so there are no special requirements on the Windows side—gestures simply work in Windows XP and newer.
I tested this using XP Pro on my MacBook Pro, and it worked as described. I was able to use pinch to zoom in/out on images in Microsoft’s Picture Viewer, and to change the size of the text on an Internet Explorer page. Rotation gestures also worked as expected on the images. If you’re a laptop or Magic Mouse user, this is a nice addition to your Windows virtual machines.
Mac Mouse Cursor
As you can probably tell from the features described in this review, Parallels is a feature-rich program. Sometimes, though, feature overload can lead to a complex user interface, and there are spots in Parallels where that’s the case.
Take the virtual machine Configuration panel, for instance, which contains 15 separate sections. Or the Preferences panel, which includes 11 separate tabs, some of which contain a large number of items that can be configured. While these sections and tabs are relatively well laid out, the sheer number of choices can cause confusion.
For example, you might think that defining how Mac and Windows 7 keyboard shortcuts coexist would be found in the virtual machine Configuration panel…but that’s not the case. Instead, you define the shortcuts in the Preferences panel, where you can set up definitions for Windows, Linux, OS X, and generic guests.

UX Myths Research:
Over the summer I decided to carry on my research about UX Design and found various articles which could potentially help with my dissertation, if not my career post graduation.
Since I hadn’t yet re-started my blog all of my note takings was on Microsoft Word. With additional notes to the side of the research.

Myth #1: People read on the web
Dissertation Preparation Research Material
https://uxmyths.com/post/647473628/myth-people-read-on-the-web
“People only read word-by-word on the web when they are really interested in the content.
They usually skim the pages looking for highlighted keywords, meaningful headings, short paragraphs and scannable list.”
Statistics on this myth:
In 2013, analytics vendor Chartbeat analysed Slate and other websites and found that most visitors scroll through about only 50-60% of an article page. What’s more interesting, it seems to be : people readily share your articles even without reading them - You Won’t Finish This Article.
Jakob Nielsen’s eye-tracking study from 2008 indicated that less than 20% of the text content is actually read on an average web page.
In another usability test, Nielsen tested different wording styles for a website. Concise, scannable and objective copywriting resulted in 124% better usability.
In a usability study Gerry McGovern discovered that only 1 out of 15 users could locate a specific piece of information that was not scannably placed on the page.
Steve Krug claims in Don’t Make Me Think that one of the most important fact about web users is that they don’t read, they scan.
Research shows that if people read a piece of content for pleasure, they read more thoroughly and find reading effortless even on a computer screen.
Studies show that there are methodical web readers who usually don’t scan but read from top to bottom.
Well structured pages that are designer for cursory reading are more likely to be read.
#2: All Pages should be accessible in 3 Clicks:
Usability tests have long challenged the so called three-click rule or two tap rule. Contrary to popular belief, people don’t leave your site or app if they’re unable to find the desired information in 3 clicks or taps. In fact, the number of necessary clicks affects neither user satisfaction, nor success rate. That’s right; fewer clicks don’t make users happierand aren’t necessarily perceived as faster.
What really counts here is ease of navigation, the constant scent of informationalong the user’s path. If you don’t make the user think about the clicks, they won’t mind having a few extra clicks.
Studies that challenge the three-click rule:
UIE’s usability testsshowed that people don’t quit after 3 clicks and don’t feel frustratedif they have to click more. - Testing the Three-Click Rule or The 3 Click Rule on Medium
Jakob Nielsen’s usability tests found that “users’ ability to find products on an e-commerce site increased by 600 percent after the design was changed so that products were 4 clicks from the homepage instead of 3.” from the book Prioritizing Usability, quoted in Highlights from Prioritizing Web Usability.
Further UIE usability tests show that it’s not the number of clicks but the well-labelled links with informationscent that play a key role in usability. - Getting Confidence From Lincoln
A practical advice is to replace the three-click rule with the one-click rule: “Every click or interaction should take the user closer to their goal while eliminating as much of the non-destination as possible.” – Breaking the Law: The 3 Click Rule
Further reading on this:
The 3-click rule is an arbitrary rule of thumb that is not backed by data, says the Nielsen Norman Group
David Hamill’s thoughts on why the three-click rule is nonsense: Stop Counting Clicks
An article by CX Partners about the rule: 3 isn’t the magic number.
Many research findings prove that people do scroll:
Chartbeat, a data analytics provider, analysed data from 2 billion visits and found that “66% of attention on a normal media page is spent below the fold.”  What You Think You Know About the Web Is Wrong
Heatmap service provider ClickTale analyzed almost 100.000 pageviews. The result: people used the scrollbar on 76% of the pages, with 22% being scrolled all the way to the bottom regardless of the length of the page. That said, it’s clear that page top is still your most valuable screen estate. - Unfolding the Fold and ClickTale Scrolling Report and Part 2
The design agency Huge measured scrolling in a series of usability tests and found “that participants almost always scrolled, regardless of how they are cued to do so – and that’s liberating.”- Everybody Scrolls
Usability expert Jakob Nielsen’s eye-tracking studies show that while attention is focused above the fold, people do scroll down, especially if the page is designed to encourage scrolling. - Scrolling and Attention
On mobile, half of the users start scrolling within 10 seconds and 90% within 14 seconds.- Stats from MOVR (published in Luke Wroblewski’s tweet)
Another eye-tracking study conducted by CX Partners confirms that people do scroll if certain design guidelines are followed.[TT2] - The myth of the page fold: evidence from user testing
Usability studies by the Software Usability Research Laboratory’s  show that users can read long, scrolling pages faster than paginated ones. Their studies confirm that people are accustomed to scrolling. - The Impact of Paging vs. Scrolling on Reading Online Text Passages
Jared Spool’s usability tests from 1998 tell us that, even though people say they don’t like to scroll, they are willing to do so. Moreover, longer and scrollable pages even worked better for users. - As the Page Scrolls
More articles about scrolling:
In July 2011, Apple removed the scrollbar from Mac OS X it’s the default setting, though users can put it back). This clearly shows that people are so familiar with scrolling that they don’t even need the visual clue for it.
Jared Spool’s article on design guidelines to encourage scrolling: Utilizing the Cut-off Look to Encourage Users To Scroll.
Don’t miss Life below 600px, a witty article on the page fold.
Myth #4: Design is about making a product look good
https://uxmyths.com/post/654070104/myth-design-is-about-making-a-website-look-good
Many people regard product design as decoration; the art of making a website, a mobile app or any product look good. However, design is more about how something works rather than how it looks.Design is about both form and function. In contrast with art, good design is not only visually and emotionally appealing but is made for use.
The goal of design is to efficiently solve problems. Design is based on the understanding of how users see the world, how they think and behave. And the toolset of the designer is broader than just colours and font-styles, as it also includes user-research, prototyping, usability testing, and more.
How designers define design.
“Good design, when it’s done well, becomes invisible. It’s only when it’s done poorly that we notice it. Think of it like a room’s air conditioning. We only notice it when it’s too hot, too cold, making too much noise, or the unit is dripping on us. Yet, if the air conditioning is perfect, nobody say anything and we focus, instead, on the task at hand.” – Luke Wroblewski
“What is design to me? Like design I think it’s best to break the problem up until you find the simplest solution.” – Paul Scrivens
“Design is not primarily supposed to entertain or to be nice or to aesthetically please. It’s supposed to perform.” – Oliver Reichenstein
“What designers do is to solve problems by deciding on the look and function of something. This can be writing text, laying out an interface, planning a chair, or coming up with a better Netflix envelope, lightbulb, or chair.” – Joshua Porter
“Design is directed toward human beings. To design is to solve human problems by identifying them and executing the best solution.” – Ivan Chermayeff
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” – The indispensable quote from Steve Jobs
Myth #5: Accessibility is expensive and difficult
https://uxmyths.com/post/654091803/myth-5-accessibility-is-expensive-and-difficult
To make your website accessible, you don’t need to add extra functionality or to duplicate any content. The key is simply to assess the requirements of those with different skills and limited devices when designing the user interface and your content.
To build from scratch a website that’s accessible therefore, costs virtually the same as to develop one that isn’t.Correcting an already inaccessible site, however, might need extra effortbut is always beneficial on the long run since accessible sites are easier and cheaper to maintain.
Why making your website accessible is beneficial:
Reaching a bigger audience- a large number of people live with disabilities (see an older study as well.
An accessible site always has better usability.
An accessible website is also SEO friendly.
Myth #7: Graphics will make a page element more visible
https://uxmyths.com/post/702072231/myth-graphics-will-make-a-page-element-more-visible
A common pitfall in web design is to emphasize an important piece of content with a graphic-heavy and flashy presentation. This approach, however, often makes it less visible.
When people look for something specific on a website, they search for text and links where they assume the information would be found.Very often people mistake visual, colourful page elements for ads and avoid them altogether.
It doesn’t mean though that you can’t use any emphasis. Contrast does work well and is essential for prioritizing contentand thus creating effective web design.
Research and articles on the use and misuse of graphics:
Jakob Nielsen’s eye-tracking study confirms that people almost never look at anything that looks like an ad.- Banner Blindness: Old and New Findings. For a detailed discussion, see his book Prioritising web usability.
“The big finding is that banner blindness is real. It is not just advertising banners but anything that looks like an advertising banner,’ says Jakob Nielsen, a principal at Internet user research firm Nielsen Norman Groupin Fremont, Calif. For example, one health-related non-profit site has a box – not an ad – that tells users what to do if they think they are having a heart attack. But a study showed that people were missing it because of its location on the page” - from Marketers Seek a Banner-Blindness Cure
Franck Largeault’s study with 300 subjects also confirms the existence of ad-avoidance (though its main objective was to compare graphical banners with links). - Compared efficiency of advertisement banners and contextual sponsored links on the internet
Don Norman discusses that people have superb focus and how they miss anything that falls outside of it, and therefore don’t look for ad-like content when they usually find these in the form of links and text. - Commentary: Banner Blindness, Human Cognition and Web Design
The famous ad-copywriter, Howard Luck Gossagesays about ad-avoidance: “The real fact of the matter is that nobody reads ads. People read what interests them. Sometimes it’s an ad.”
Myth #11: You need to redesign your website periodically
https://uxmyths.com/post/712537920/myth-you-need-to-redesign-your-website-periodically
To many, a redesign means revamping the look of a website in the hope that it will increase conversions and attract new customers. In fact, such projects are often counterproductive as user feedbacks on numerous redesigns proved that users hate change, even if the new design is clearly superior to the original.
For a redesign (or realign) to be effective, it must stem from the understanding of what does and what doesn’t work on the current website, and how user needs have changedsince the last redesign. In most cases, it is sufficient to make minor changes in the user interface. Google, Yahoo, Amazon and a bunch of others follow this strategy with great success: you can hardly see significant changes on their websites though they’re perfecting their design constantly.
Why to avoid radical redesigns:
Jared Spool calls changing a product to a completely new design the Flip-the-Switch strategy. This is “the most ineffective way to get major changes into a design” - Extraordinarily Radical Redesign Strategies.

Myth #13: Icons enhance usability
Many researchers have shown that icons are hard to memorizeand are often highly inefficient. The Microsoft Outlook toolbar is a good example: the former icon-only toolbar had poor usability and changing the icons and their positioning didn’t help much. What did help was the introduction of text labels next to the icons. It immediately fixed the usability issues and people started to use the toolbar. In another study, the team of UIE observed that people remember a button’s position instead of the graphic interpretation of the function.
In most projects, icons are very difficult to get right and need a lot of testing. For abstract things, icons rarely work well.
Research findings and articles on the usefulness of icons:
Michael Zuschlag says that “icons contrary to intuition, do not necessarily help the user find a menu item better than a text label alone(see Wiedenbeck S 1999.) The use of icons and labels in an end user application program: an empirical study of learning and retention, Behaviour & Information Technology, 18(2), p68-82).It’s not worth it.”He also discusses his views on UX Exchange.
A user’s understanding of an icon is based on previous experience.Due to the absence of a standard usage for most icons, text labels are necessary to communicate the meaning and reduce ambiguity. - Icon Usability
“When in doubt, always remember this: the best icon is a text label.”
The article The Problem With Icons provides a nice example how it’s difficult to guess an icon’s meaning without a text label next to it.
37signals applauds Apple’s MobileMe service for changing their logout icon from a power button to a “logout” label. - UI Sighting: Clear over clever on MobileMe.
Don Norman says that “Inscrutable icons litter the face of the [Apple] devices even though the research community has long demonstrated that people cannot remember the meaning of more than a small number of icons. Icon plus label is superior to icon alone or label alone. Who can remember what each icon means? Not me.
Where icons add value:
Universally understood icons work well (ie. print, close, play/pause, reply, tweet, share on Facebook).
Icons can serve as bullet points, structuring content (ie. file type icons for PDFs, DOCs, etc.).

Myth #26: Usability testing = focus groups
https://uxmyths.com/post/1319999199/myth-26-usability-testing-focus-groups
When it comes to collecting feedback from users, usability tests and focus groups are often confusedalthough their goals are completely different.
Focus groups assess what users say: a number of people gather in order to discuss their feelings, attitudes and thoughts on a given topic to reveal their motivations and preferences.
Usability testing, on the other hand, is about observing how people actually use a product, by assigning key tasks to users and analysing their performance and experience.
How the two research methods are different:
They have different goals. As Chris Giegersummarizes in his article: focus groups are about understanding people’s feelings and opinionsabout something whereas usability tests are about learning how people use things”. A focus groups tell you what people want; user studies tell you whether something works.[TT1]
The research processes are entirely different. Focus group research implies discussions with members of your target audience, while usability testing is about observing users performing given tasks. A focus group research, in addition, is typically performed with a group of participants while a usability test is typically performed one-on-one.
What people say is not what they do. According to Jakob Nielsen, the most important difference between the two methods is that focus groups can only reveal what “customers say they do and not the way customers actually operatethe product”. Cardinal Path has written a great comparison between the two methods. (For more sources, see Myth #21: People can tell you what they want.)
They should be performed in different phases of the development. Focus groups should be performed early in the project to discover your target audience, while usability testing should be used to measure the performance of your site after it has been finished or is in a test phase, as a Webcredible article points out.

UX Myths Research:
Over the summer I decided to carry on my research about UX Design and found various articles which could potentially help with my dissertation, if not my career post graduation.
Since I hadn't yet re-started my blog all of my note takings was on Microsoft Word.

Steve Krug claims in Don't Make Me Think that one of the most important fact about web users is that they don't read, they scan.
What really counts here is ease of navigation, the constant scent of information along the user’s path.
Usability studies by the Software Usability Research Laboratory's  show that users can read long, scrolling pages faster than paginated ones.
Jakob Nielsen says that it’s totally normal that stakeholders would welcome a fresh design after the original UI got tired in their eyes. Users, on the other hand, prefer familiar designs as they want to locate everything easily, get things done, and leave. - Fresh vs. Familiar: How Aggressively to Redesign
·“Don’t redesign just to do something new, redesign because you have a better answer to the question.” - warns Paul Scrivens
·Jared Spool argues that all-at-once redesigns are to be avoided because they are costly and very risky. Instead, he advises an incremental approachthat is flexible to business changes. - Avoiding Redesigns (podcast)

IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN!  HERE IS MY TOP TEN ALBUMS FROM 2018!
By midway through the year, I knew who would be in the top 3, and that it would be difficult to order them.  Ordering 4 through 10 was faster and easier than any list ever has been before.  But those top 3, so difficult.  Here are some thoughts on each. in ascending order.  MUCH TEXT TO FOLLOW.
10: Muse - Simulation Theory I just got this album a few weeks ago.  It's not super amazing, but is definitely loads better than their last album, 2015's "Drone".  I like the '80s synth stylings, especially on the opening and closing tracks.  Plus, just look at that amazing vaporwave album cover. A favorite: "The Void" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztnEjj5WW8k
9: Cut Chemist - Die Cut Cut Chemist hasn't put out a proper album since 2006!  This album is pretty scattershot, but it has some great tracks.  It's basically a mid-level DJ Shadow album, with some trippy dance tracks and some fun hip-hop songs.  But since Shadow himself hasn't put out a decent album since 2011 this was plenty welcome. A favorite: "I Got a Weapon" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTPQI2_N2cI
8: Charlie Puth - Voicenotes A newcomer to my lists!  I first heard his song "How Long" in 2017, and loved it, but there was no album yet!  Finally, he put out a full-length and it is wonderful.  This is just a sexy album, full of amazing basslines and syncopated beats.  The real standout track is "Attention".   A favorite: "LA Girls" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW3Than5jrs
7: Aurora - Infections of a Different Kind Another newcomer!  Her first album from 2016 was such a big hit in our household, but I think we found it slightly too late to chart, so to speak.  Phoenix discovered this elfin performer, and within a week we got to see her in concert.  This new album is much shorter than her first, and so far not quite as amazing.  But I know it has hidden depths that will reveal themselves over time. A favorite: "Forgotten Love" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPUFd7cv9q8
6: Death Cab for Cutie - Thank You for Today I've been on a bit of a Death Cab kick for a while, since falling especially in love with their last album, 2015's "Kintsugi".  This is a very soft album, but with some good rhythms and melodies that do the perfect mixture of lull me and keep me interested.  The opening song "I Dreamt We Spoke Again" has a very Post Service feel to it. A favorite: "I Dreamt We Spoke Again" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aZUgUii4Sk
5: Metric - Art of Doubt Metric has been a favorite of mine since I discovered Broken Social Scene in 2007 along with all their related bands.  Their last album, 2015's "Pagans in Vegas" was a disappointment, I never really got into it.  This one's really good though, it has the perfect modern Metric sound, cold and electronic yet enveloping and organic at the same time.  Very good stuff. A favorite: "Now or Never Now" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC8MfulGMXE
4: The Decemberists - I'll Be Your Girl I have not loved a Decemberists album this much since 2009's #1 "Hazards of Love".  In late 2017 they put out the first single from this album "Severed" and I was blown away by their use of sythesizers, it was completely different than anything they'd done before, and I listened to it over and over.  When the album proper dropped it was a somewhat slow burn for me at first, nothing on it was as immediately catching as Severed.  But over time it has become a huge favorite.  Much of the album has an electronic texture, either subtly in the background or front and center.  One of my favorite songs, "Cutting Stone" sounds much like a classic Decemberists folksy ballad, but there's not a guitar anywhere, its all synths.  Also, a special shout out to "Rusalka, Rusalka/Wild Rushes", it sounds like a Hazards of Love b-side. A favorite: "Cutting Stone" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfRwOyBWUsk
3: Dessa - Chime Dessa has shared my "top favorite band" spot with Silversun Pickups for several years now.  Her last two albums took my #1 spots in 2013 and 2010.  Chime is at first a bit of a departure, but is also just a natural extension of where she's been heading for years.  It has genuine pop music on it, and she sings much more than raps on the album as a whole.  She changed her sound, she changed her look (went blond and curly), and I love it all.  I was at first disappointed at the lack of hard hip-hop bangers (outside of a couple near the beginning of the album) but have made peace with that because of how much I love the rest of the album.  Also: I read her book of personal essays "My Own Devices" which was really good, and informed me about many of the emotional behind the scenes-ness to much of her music.  This album is so great, and if it weren't for the next two albums, it would have taken #1 easily.   A favorite: "Jumprope" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc7lGAssa1I
2: A Perfect Circle - Eat the Elephant This is one of those glorious returns.  APC hasn't put out an album since 2004's "Emotive", and that was honestly barely an album.  2003's "Thirteenth Step" was their last true album, and it is still a huge favorite of mine.  So it's been roughly 15 years.  In that time, singer Maynard James Keenan has put out a wealth of music, mostly under his Puscifer solo band name.  Some of that music has been beautiful and amazing, but no full album has been that great.  Billy Howerdell, former Tool guitar tech turned musical-side of A Perfect Circle has put out an album under the name Ashes Divide, and it was decent.  But the magic that is A Perfect Circle has been distinctly missing that whole time.  "Eat the Elephant" (a reference to destroying the republican party) is great from start to finish.  It is dark and challenging, atmospheric and beautiful.  It stands beside their older albums as a true equal and I couldn't be happier with it.  I thought for the longest time this would garner #1 this year, it completely deserves it.  A masterpiece. A favorite: "Disillusioned" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u05S9cq2bLY
1: Mike Shinoda - Post Traumatic This one's difficult to talk about.  In 2017, the singer of Linkin Park, Chester Bennington, killed himself.  LP had been a favorite band of mine since high school, I hadn't loved all their music throughout time but always loved them as a band.  It was really rough for me, definitely the most I'd been affected by a "celebrity death".  Mike Shinoda, Linkin Park's resident rapper and production genius had always been my favorite member.  In January 2018 he put out three songs, with appropriately low-budget filmed-at-his-studio-selfie-style videos that granted an intense and personal look into his life and feelings over the last months.  I listened to those three songs over and over, they made me cry many times.  In June he put out a full-length album, that began with those three songs.  The album ranges from specific and personal to broad and emotional.  There are a few great guest artists, including Chino from the Deftones and last year's surprise #10 singer K. Flay.  The production on the album isn't overly flashy but it has that Mike Shinoda sound that I've loved for years.  I used a huge amount of these (and Linkin Park) songs in my recent sync of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which proved their impact on me.  The album is raw, unpolished, and uncompromisingly emotional.  It's personal significance is what put it at #1. A favorite: "A Place To Start" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eijqQgC2S-g

1. So It Goes by  disarm_d
They’re not even in the woods yet. Style-era fic.
2. and they come unstuck by estrella30
He’s at the bottom of the stoop, staring up at her with wide eyes and a small smile quirking his lips. His hair is pulled back tight under a black knit hat and his eyes are bright green. Taylor’s not seen him in person for so long she can barely remember when the last time was. It was probably at some sort of industry function; an awards show or a dinner. Something like that. Not that it matters really. They were together and then they weren’t and then they were friends and now they’re… whatever it is that they’ve fallen into now. Acquaintances, Taylor thinks would be the best word. Acquaintances with close friends in common.
or - harry/taylor futurefic
3.  I could build a castle by littlecather
“This’ll be fun,” he says.
“This’ll take months,” Taylor corrects. “Probably a good year or so, if we’re only coming out here on breaks from tour. I’m not sure how wise this idea of yours was.”
“I was just thinking about us doing it up together,” Harry murmurs. She can hear his smile in the darkness.
In the not too distant future, Taylor and Harry buy and renovate a disused beach house.
4.  Words With Friends by threeturn
Harry rings Taylor the morning after the 2013 VMAs.

Harry flashes her his widest grin. “I’m Harry,” he says and holds his hand out again. This time she takes it and Harry notices her hand is smaller than his, her fingers long and thin, the edges of her fingertips just a little rough. Harry remembers that she plays guitar sometimes, that she writes a lot, and all of a sudden he wants to know everything he can about her, everything that she’ll let him know.

Taylor Alison is a country songwriter who hopes collaborating with a mainstream pop act will expand her professional horizons. Being the woman behind both means keeping everyone at a distance. But Taylor can't help wanting to let Harry in closer.
12.  Night Changes by loveinslowmotion
When Harry asked Taylor on a spontaneous camping trip, he'd been sure she was going to say no. An hour later, they were heading out of the city together and making a tragic attempt at setting up a tent. With marshmallow roasting, awkward dancing, hair braiding, Polaroid taking, song sharing, hiking adventures, friend phone calls, playing doctor, copious amounts of chocolate, and hands that won't keep to themselves, feelings run high when they realise just how fast the night changes.
13.  august and everything after by fliptomybside
Taylor takes a break. She doesn't come back.
14.  We Never Go Out Of Style by stolenkissesprettylies
"wanna go for a drive?” the text reads and Taylor can feel the lump in her throat forming. It’s so familiar, it feels like four months ago, when it was totally normal for Harry to drive over and pick her up. But it’s not normal, not anymore.
15.  see me in hindsight by ymorton
taylor said something about running her new songs by exes and it got a little out of hand
16.  Paper Airplanes by ForeverChasingDreams
Harry loves her with everything he has, see. Love was never the problem, never the cause of the fights and the silent nights and the tears. Because how can one relationship take the pressure of a million eyes watching their every move?
Based upon Taylor Swift's new song, Out Of The Woods.
17. It’s Okay to Miss Them by burnthiscityxx
"Writing songs is like writing everything you wanted to say to the person that you secretly are in love with. Or someone who absolutely broke your heart and you never told them that was a really terrible thing to do. Or someone that you miss that you’re not allowed to miss because they are bad for you. It’s like writing all of those things down and putting it in a bottle and throwing it out into the ocean, and maybe someday they’ll hear it and they’ll know it, but maybe they won’t. And maybe that’s a really cowardly way to live your life, or maybe it’s the bravest possible way to live your life." - Taylor Swift.
In which Harry and Taylor come to terms with themselves, the world they live in, and each other.
18.  I hope the cracks in the pavement lead back to you by fliptomybside
Taylor runs. Harry finds her.
19.  this is my night; this is my dream by blueandbrady
Harry goes back to Taylor's hotel room with her after the MSG after party.
20.  We Are The Foxes by loveinslowmotion
How do you sneak in to a Taylor Swift concert when you're two of the members of the biggest boy band? You dress up like the ridiculous fools you are.
(I know I said ‘top twenty’ but there are some of my personal favorite fics who didn’t make the cut so fuck it, I’ll include them)
alive in spite of rising water by brokendrums (narry x haylor) (ot3)
Harry enlists in the army and Niall has no choice but to follow suit.
  The Clearing by aroceu
The monsters turned out to be just trees.
This is the Game They Play by burnthiscityxx
"You always kind of have that person, that one person who you feel might interrupt your wedding and be like, ‘Don’t do it cause we’re not over yet’. I think everybody has that one person who kind of floats in and out of their life, and the narrative is never truly over." - Taylor Swift.
“I think a lot of the time, you still have feelings for an ex…and sometimes, it doesn’t matter how long it’s been. Sometimes you feel like you have unfinished stuff and it’s okay to get back together with them.” - Harry Styles. In which Harry and Taylor play the game.
the words you spoke by siempreniall
Taylor hasn't done this before--showing her exes the songs she's written about them before the rest of the world gets its chance. Harry, though... Harry's always been different, hasn't he?
A story in ten parts.

8 Favorite Apps for Building Unforgettable Instagram & Facebook Stories
I’ve been getting in the routine of waking up early to workout before I head off to work.
It’s great — I start my day off on the right foot with a surge of endorphins and adrenaline to get myself on track to having a healthy, happy, productive day.
That is, of course, until I check Instagram on my way out of the gym!
You see, there’s a really popular donut shop in Cleveland (Brewnuts) whose owner posts the most engaging and fun photos on social media and knows how to make them sing to me at the break of dawn each morning.
(And get this, I’m not just talking about photos of simple chocolate or strawberry sprinkle donuts. I’m talking about Fruit Loops-Topped, Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Bullseye, Chocolate Bourbon Frosted with Brown Sugar Bacon, and for you Game of Thrones fans, an entirely themed “Game of Dones” menu!)
Maple Bacon
“Game of Dones” menu
Most of the time, I can resist the beautiful posts, but when there’s a story about the new offerings on the menu for the day, they seem to reel me in without fail.
With this in mind, when I think of social media stories, I think of influence so strong that I’ve literally just left the gym to go buy a donut and practically negate whatever work I just did.
Why Are Instagram & Facebook Stories Worth Your Time?
If this doesn’t convince you of how effective good Facebook and Instagram stories can be at capturing the attention of your audience, you might be missing the forest for the trees (or the donut for the sprinkles.)
Ever since Snapchat’s original introduction into stories came about in 2013, the popularity of the offering on social media platforms has exploded: Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram have all created their own stories option. They are also growing 15 times faster than news feeds.
Just recently Facebook announced plans to start offering a horizontal swipe carousel for viewing its newsfeed so it’s more like the way people browse stories. This shows just how prominent story behavior is becoming.
Facebook executives even predict that traffic on stories will surpass traffic on newsfeeds in 2019. They’re that powerful and are probably only going to become more versatile and influential in the months and years to come.
So, how can you be ready?
The short answer is to get on the bandwagon and come up with a strategy around creating stories for your brand.
That answer, of course, doesn’t explain the how of creating these stories when there are a million other things on marketers’ minds they need to learn and do.
Fortunately for us, there are plenty of apps and tools that can help make our jobs a little easier. Here are some of our favorites.
8 Apps for Building Unforgettable Instagram & Facebook Stories
The apps described below can help increase flexibility with scheduling, artistic design, editing, formatting, interactive elements, and convenience when it comes to creating attractive and engaging, social media stories.
1. Unfold
Free, offers in-app purchases
Available for iOS and Android
Unfold is a great application for creating stories with a cohesive style to them, whether they’re made out of picture collages or other templates. You can put multiple images on one screen using any of their fancy templates.
They also have a selection of stock imagery that can help when you’re not uploading your own images. You can make your story really stand out with their text overlay and other formatting design options.
2. Mojo
Free, offers in-app purchases
Available for iOS
Mojo is an awesome app for creating stories with video and animation. While it’s only available for iPhones (as of now), it’s an easy platform to make video edits and use their selection of 50 music tracks to add that extra musical kick into your story.
3. StoryArt
Free, offers in-app purchases
Available for iOS and Android
If you’re looking for a ton of new template options, StoryArt has you covered. With more than 500 templates and 40 themes to choose from, StoryArt allows users to get a fresh take on their stories.
The cool thing about this platform is that it offers some fun themes like Film, Marble, Retro, and Minimalism. There are also loads of filters and options for video editing for those who are looking for a simple, streamlined app.
4. Canva
Free, offers in-app purchases
Available for iOS and Android
Most marketers already know about Canva, but did you know they have a specific story maker offering as well? As the place to go for DIY design and over a million stock images, Canva is a must have for creating fresh stories that don’t have the run-of-the-mill images everyone has already seen ten times before. When it comes to interesting imagery, Canva is your new best friend.
What’s the cherry—or sprinkles— on top, you may ask?
If trying to make all those edits on your small phone screen is a frustrating process, you can use Canva to customize your story on your desktop screen before saving the file to your mobile device.
5. Clips
Free
Available for iOS
I look at Clips like it’s a more simplified version of iMovie for those who don’t need every single editing capability accessible to them.
It’s great for not only editing video for stories, but creating a video experience with text, graphics, animations, and filters.
It’s pretty amazing what you can create with just a mere few clicks of a button! Unfortunately, though, it’s only available on iOS devices.
6. Buffer’s Stories Creator
Free, no sign in required
Desktop
Everyone knows Buffer for its social media scheduling capabilities, which many marketers wouldn’t know what to do without.
However, Buffer also has a tool for creating stories in a blink of an eye. It’s not an app but a website page that doesn’t even require a signup.
Their templates are also great for brands who might want to use some stories specifically for events or new product deals.
While Buffer can’t schedule posts directly to stories, you can schedule reminders through the app which can enable push notifications to post stories.
7. Later
Free version for individuals, plans from $9/month to $49/month for businesses
Available for iOS and Android
Well, jumping in right where we left off, Later lets you do exactly that with your social media stories: schedule them to publish later! They also offer a visual scheduler for those visual learners out there who would like to see their posts graphed out on a calendar.
It’s a great application you can use from your mobile device or your desktop.
8. Instasize
Free version, or Premium version for $4.99/month
Available for iOS and Android
Instasize is a great photo editing app that integrates directly with Instagram to make the publishing process that much easier. It’s also ideal for brands for whom it’s important to establish a consistent brand aesthetic.
Overall, any brand leaders who want to save all that time they spend specifically sizing photos for different social platforms will love how this app instantly sizes the images for each network—it’s a wonder where the app may have gotten its name!
The premium version gives you access to even more filters, beauty tools to edit blemishes and whiten teeth, and other exclusive content.
Apps May Help, But Don’t Lose Perspective
Remember, these apps are meant to make creating stories easier, but they’re not magic bullets to have your social media account suddenly go viral; only great content can do that.
Even the best apps can’t make inauthentic, run-of-the-mill content great.
While we’re all for using tools and apps, at the end of the day, they are just sidekicks to the real superhero: a great message.
If you’re looking to really make an impact on social, first focus your efforts on making meaningful connections with your audience through content they actually want and need.
These apps (and these!) are ways to make that execution easier, but they are not a substitution for thoughtful planning.
If you already have the messaging and content side of things down, these apps can be an awesome help to save you time and make your life a little bit easier.
After all, sometimes we all need a sidekick.

Sick of Social Media? I Have an Idea For You
http://fashion-trendin.com/sick-of-social-media-i-have-an-idea-for-you/
Sick of Social Media? I Have an Idea For You
If you’ve been having trouble sleeping, feeling anxious, experiencing low self-esteem, getting distracted, procrastinating and/or wondering the meaning of it all, you can probably chalk it up to social media, and it’s probably time for you to go off the grid for a while. That said, I know how tough it can be to dismantle a habit so deeply ingrained, which is why I’ve outlined a time-tested approach to doing so below. I’ve witnessed several esteemed users execute these 15 steps with astonishing results according to their followup posts. I know 15 feels like a lot, but if you follow these closely, you just might find, nestled in the deepest corner of your psyche, the belief that you’re a genuinely good and possibly superior being to others. Good luck, and dog speed.
Step 1: Inform all your followers on social media that social media is really tiring you out, and that you’re considering taking a break for the sake of your sanity.
Step 2: Craft a relatable post to share across all channels that expresses why, exactly, you’ll officially be taking a break from social media.
Step 3: Share when you plan to return so your followers don’t wonder where you’ve gone (thus rendering you irrelevant), and so they know when they can expect fresh content from you. State a lofty duration of your break (this week, this month, this year) but with soft language like maybe, probably and at least.
Step 4: Check for likes, retweets, comments.
Step 5: Respond to the responses with thoughts and ideas about why you think social media isn’t good for you right now, or really anyone, probably, but no judgement.
Step 6: Check for likes, retweets, comments.
Step 7: Pen followup post that informs friends and followers how to reach you during this time so you can stay in as close of touch as you were when you were active on the social media, which you’re for sure taking a break from, like, very soon. Make sure people know they can reach you via text, email, LinkedIn (gotta stay up on work shit), Snapchat (doesn’t count), Skype (not social media in the strict sense) and WhatsApp.
Step 8: Pause hiatus to comment superfast about Kim’s new look then leave for real.
Step 9: In the days following, attend social gatherings and discuss how it feels to be off social media (great), while also recommending all your depressed and anxious friends give it a try so they can feel like you do (great).
Step 10: Peek over their shoulders as they show you funny stuff on Twitter and marvel at how much it totally doesn’t matter how much you’ve missed. Ask them to text you that gif tho.
Step 11: Hop on to tell your followers how good you feel — suggest they take a break too. Decide to start a social media movement! Imagine all the people you could reach! Initiate that hashtag #takeasocialbreak and then bounce.
Step 12: Don’t even check for replies; that’s how above it you are.
Step 13: After a long stretch of not logging back in and feeling borderline godlike, go to a really fun party that would kill on the ‘gram, aesthetically, and realize you’re ready to return. It’s before the end of the week/month/year, but you’ve gotten so much out of this break already that you feel ready to come back.
Step 14: Alert all channels that YOU’RE BACK BABY and that you’ve learned a lot, like a ton, and that you’ll share your learnings soon.
Step 15: Check for likes, retweets, comments.

AirClean® Systems offers two types of PCR Workstations, each regular with UVTect microprocessor controller, that help the researcher by stopping background and cross-contamination. Some personnel will have particular needs for the chair size or desk height, whilst other folks will require additional storage space according to the tasks they frequently carry out. We can thank the Intel Xeon processor and 32GB RAM for that. In conjunction with SIGGRAPH 2013 in Anaheim, CA, HP introduced new professional monitors that carry the same Z-series branding as their workstations. The volume cannot be shrunk simply because the file method does not support it. I know if you run a gaming card (which you can soft mod to act like a workstation automobile) factors like true view graphics are missing. The activation server determined the specified item important is invalid. 8. Late charges account- for guests who checked out before some charges were posted to their account.
In spite of its amazing functionality, Z Series Workstations are also renowned for getting whisper-quiet. Workstations generally have many Central Processing Units, a lot of RAM and a lot of fast challenging disk drives. The improvement of workstations was historically connected to developments in private computing advances in microprocessors, computer software, memory storage, and so on. • Handheld PCs (such as PDAs) lack the energy of a desktop or notebook Computer, but provide features for customers who need to have restricted functions and modest size. So Barack Obama as a candidate had to tread really cautiously in discussing these matters, expressing support rather for policies that would seem race-neutral but really have a disproportionately useful impact for African Americans and Latinos.
The Z6 and the Z8 will also support dual CPUs as nicely as optional dual 10 GbE network modules for high speed networking at a fraction of the cost of HP’s earlier workstations. Little Type Issue (SFF) workstations like the HP Z240 SFF are becoming a lot far more prevalent in design and style and engineering offices. High-efficiency workstations are designed for computationally intense applications that need try this more graphics capability, processing power, and multi-tasking capacity than a normal Computer or notebook Pc. The graphics card is the other essential element in a specialist workstation, with a more quickly card rendering the on-screen graphics at a higher frame price, creating manipulating models and textures much smoother and much more responsive.
15. HP Drive Encryption requires Windows. AMD FirePro graphics cards have the very best assistance from Autodesk, 2GB onboard memory would be a excellent start. Outfitted with Nvidia Quadro M620 graphics and 2GB of committed video memory, the Z2 Mini is well-equipped for makes use of like rendering objects in CAD. And appropriately scale the number of Cores is constantly essential, on i7 or Xeon. Looking for versatile classroom pc desks or laptop carrels? If you have deployed an ESAE Administrative Forest (for Tier admins in Phase 1) or a Microsoft Identity Manager (MIM) privileged access management (PAM) (for Tier 1 and two admins in Phase two), you would join the PAW to the domain in that atmosphere right here as an alternative of the production domain. , home of most every little thing regarding digital video, has compiled a DIY listing for three different HD workstations all primarily based about Apple’s Mac Pro and Final Reduce Pro application.

Bottom Line: The HP Z840 is a higher-end, dual-socket, specialist workstation with two octo-core processors, prodigious expansion space, and ISV-certified graphics for your multi-million-dollar projects.
Built about the new Intel C602 chipset, HP provides a decision of Intel Xeon E5-1600 and E5-2600 series processors with 4, six or eight cores and base clock frequencies up to 3.6GHz. Browse our choice of modern day workstations, cool cubicles, adjustable height sit-to-stand benching systems and office systems furniture to customize your open workplace plan and optimize your space. The mobile workstation market has evolved significantly over the final decade, as personal computer components have turn out to be far more commoditised and customer elements turned out to be as strong and feature-laden as their expert counterparts. A lot of professions that utilize engineering, animation, rendering of graphics, and mathematical plotting benefit drastically from a potent workstation.
And so it is in today’s occasions, exactly where folks use glass furniture and utensils to mark a distinction. My daughter received her gift, but I have only received an e-mail (following spending far more than 4 hours total on the phone with consumer service over the previous two weeks) that states, and I quote directly, “Sadly we are not able to issue the refund of $85, which was promissed to you earlier. I met some fantastic new men and women at NAMM and came back with a individual want list of about 500 new gadgets but what I came back with most of all was additional fire in the belly for pushing what we are attempting to do right here at Workstation Pros and how we can make workflows for creative, energy hungry users assist them rather than constraint them when it comes to their subsequent Pc (not laptop) buy.
Powered by ThinkStation workstations, Lenovo is also debuting its new e-commerce platform, the Lenovo eLounge, to give consumers a new, 1st-of-its-sort interactive way to knowledge Lenovo computing options on the web anyplace in the globe. Mostly that’s due to becoming 1 of the 1st notebooks to function NVIDIA’s Max-Q design and style standard, which is laser-focused on slimming down gaming laptops with beefy GPUs. It really is the reason why most of the workplace spaces in your neighborhood firms are delivering a new appear by replacing their boring & old furnishings and like stylish and excellent furnishings, as well as new furniture inside their offices.
For reference nearly anything would appear like great efficiency to me, I’m currently using a Dell Inspiron 15R with 2.26GHz Intel Core i3 350M and 8GB of RAM. Nonetheless, if you have a preference for i7 processors, we can also supply CAD workstations with this configuration. They now contain 5 PCIe and 1 PCI slot for much better expandability possibilities, and a redesigned chassis that fits in line with all the other Z series workstations and laptops. However, in an office this is precisely what you have – lots of folks that could be connected up to energy all sorts of workplace equipment including the office laptop computer systems. As you can see, viewport efficiency relies more heavily on the graphics card than it does on the CPUs: on the Audi A5 scene, the Z820 with its Quadro 5000 requires second location behind the Z800 and its Quadro 6000 and on the Steampunk Tank scene, it requires third place behind each the Z800 and the Z210 and its FirePro V900. Up to 4 graphics cards and optional RAID for up to eight difficult drives. They will also provide devoted application help, such as access to Microsoft Office applications through your cloud server. They can come configured with NVIDIA Quadro K2200 graphics cards, but most leave the graphics card up to you, and come sans graphics alternative. Featuring in depth application certifications, help for up to eight independent displays, and HP certified skilled graphics drivers with complete OpenGL and DirectX assistance, AMD FirePro cards are specifically built for outstanding efficiency.
