Pornification and female self-image (Week 8)

When scrolling through Instagram, it is highly unlikely to avoid pictures of women in small bikinis or lingerie, accentuating their features on pages such as the Kardashians’ or Fashion Nova. This can be described as “pornification” of the media, a display of heightened female sexuality as a form of self-commodification to gain likes or followers (Tyler & Quek 2016). For the modern feminist this arises an inner conflict; is pornification a movement of body positivity and removing shame around female sexuality, or is it purely the objectification of women in a heteronormative society?

One of the most followed accounts on Instagram is that of Kylie Jenner, having a total of 174 million followers. Many of Kylie’s posts are of her wearing minimal clothing, accentuating features such as her breasts and her behind. From a sex-positive outlook, it is important to  explore women’s sexual desire, agency, and to challenge traditional femininity. Posting these images of herself may be a format to show young girls that sexuality is nothing to be ashamed of, that it is normal and necessary for self-love and self-care (Trinh 2016). From a feminist outlook, women’s bodies are beautiful and have no need to be hidden, and it is liberating to be able to celebrate them online (Ross 2010).

The issue then arises when these influencers idealise their lifestyles, promoting body image ideals that are almost unachievable and unhealthy both physically and mentally. With many of these influencers being celebrities, they have the luxuries to create perfectly-lit photos with professional make-up artists and photographers. They have been taught how to angle their body to enhance their features, and many have had some form of fillers or botox (Malacoff 2019). Repeated exposure to these images may present them as a being normative, which may lead to women participating in harmful activities to “fit in”. Such include drinking dangerous weight loss substances such as Kim Kardashian’s “flat tummy tea” (Malacoff 2019), or showing heightened interest in body modification, as according to 2017 statistics from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 42% of surgeons report that their patients are seeking aesthetic surgery to improve their appearance on social media channels (Dorfman et al. 2018).

These “perfect” women are often called out and ridiculed by other influencers, who identify with the body positivity movement. Celeste Barber, often hailed as the “celebrity queen of comedy”, has an Instagram account with over 7.1 million followers (@celestebarber). The premise of her Instagram account is to parody model shoots of the most famous and beautiful celebrities by comparing what it might look like for an average woman to strike those same poses (McKay 2019). The images and videos posted mimic those of celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Beyonce, the Kardashians and Gigi Hadid, highlighting that often the content posted by these influencers is unrealistic. In her interview with Vogue, Celeste explores her outlook on body positivity throughout her life, outlining her discovery that “looking a certain way has currency”, and that “body shaming and healthy living are not the same thing”. She is often approached by detox tea companies, however turns them down as she refuses to promote any products that make women feel we need to look a certain way to feel a certain way (Baker 2019).

Similarly, Jameela Jamil is an actress, feminist and advocate who has utilized social media to create an online space for body-positivity. On Jameela’s Instagram account (@jameelajamilofficial), holding over 2.9 million followers, the actress posts uplifting messages for women, sparks political conversation and calls out other celebrities and influencers promoting dangerous ideals. She has emphasised the harmful effects of detox teas and appetite-suppressing lollipops promoted by Kardashians (Dickson 2018), and detailed her views of waist trainers such as ‘Slim Tum’, stating in the caption of her post that “feminine is a vibe, not a fucking shape”. She has also established a second Instagram account (@i_weigh) with over 1 million followers, sharing messages of intersectionality and body positivity, creating a space for followers to share what they value about themselves other than their appearance. The account was established as she was “tired of seeing women just ignore what’s amazing about them and their lives and their achievements, just because they don’t have a bloody thigh gap” (Dickson 2018).

Ultimately, women have the right to express their sexuality and celebrate their bodies without shame, provided they are not fostering negative, damaging standards of beauty. It is important for large influencers to remain honest with themselves and with their followers in order to empower and healthily support each other.

The most natural thing to think when someone tells you they have a pet is that they have a dog, a cat, a bird (canary, parrot or parakeet) or a little turtle. Although if there is one thing that should be obvious to us, it is that they are not aggressive animals at all as long as they are not bothered or forced to feel in danger. if this is your first preference, there are a few more docile tarantula types. If there is one thing that should be clear to humans, that is that they are not dangerous animals at all as long as they are not threatened or made to feel in danger And they have a simpler treatment system.

So you should be particular about the space where the tarantula will be since the terrarium is not the same as for a python for this type of animal as for a lizard. Although they could be in small locations, it is preferred that they be in large areas with many divisions where they can pass. And as for any of these species, you ought to have a doctor who specializes in these animals, not just to let you know about their treatment, but also about their medications and to chat about their actions.

GECKOS

This lizard was once considered to be malicious and was even able to scare away anybody who wanted to get close to it by spilling blood out of their eyes. The truth is that all this is more a story than anything else, because this little lizard does not bite, it is not dangerous and in fact it is beautiful, with a skin full of colors. In reality, depending on where they reside, they have a great capacity to produce various colors.

I have honestly had doubts about whether to include the Vietnamese pigs in this article because they are becoming less and less exotic, as seeing a person walking around on the street is no longer a rarity but has become normalplace. But, yeah, since we really don't see them as much as some more famous ones do, we're going to continue to see them as exotic. George Clooney, who was one of the first to have this animal as a companion, made it trendy. After introducing it to society, sales soared almost everywhere in the world and houses were filled with Vietnamese pigs. However, with the Vietnamese pig we want to make an appeal: Care of it before you give it away or buy it because it weights up to 50-100 kilos. Just as it became fashionable and sales skyrocketed, some time later, abandonment and calls to the protectors also became very common, because the little pig was very funny when it weighed 6 kilos but with 50 kilos it was not so funny anymore. George Clooney has everything you need to be able to raise these pigs, so whether you have a farm or a house with a wide garden, it will not be responsible to have him as a pet.

CLOWN FISH

Clownfish, from the family of Amphiprioninae, are easy to care for and do not require anything special for maintenance when working with saltwater species, any more than usual. They are very beautiful and showy fish, glad to share tanks with other species, including surgeons.

MOORISH GUINEA PIG

A beautiful and very sweet rodent, it is also known as tuco-tuco or Moorish Guinea pig. With a ball-shaped round body and almost no tail, it looks pretty much like a regular guinea pig, despite being much more suspicious. Without complications, it can reside in a terrarium or in a cage. IGUANAS

They are attractive, omnivorous and fully docile creatures, even though their presence can make them seem hostile. Moreover, since they are very independent, they blend well into a house and have no trouble living with other persons. The iguanas are not going to come looking for you to scratch them or to feed them, though. They can sit on top of you because they like the heat you give off or eat from your hand if they're hungry, but usually they won't come near you. Never force the situation or bother to try to teach them to come when you call them, you will most likely waste your time.

LEMUR

On the Internet it has become tremendously popular, as its big eyes and how friendly they are has led to many videos being broadcast about them. More people live in Madagascar, and that's where they're supposed to be, don't you think? If you want to see a lemur up close, you can go to the zoo and if you want to see it in a natural setting, save up for a trip to these lands, but don't recommend accepting lemurs as a species. They have many peculiarities. They have multiple peculiarities, a male lemur is more docile than the female, something totally opposite to most other species.

SUGAR SQUIRREL

This tiny marsupial is a hamster-like thing, but you have to be very careful of the kind of animal that escapes. As it is an animal that is very tender, it is also known as a petaur. He also needs to be with animals like him and if they live alone, they can suffer from depression or self-harm.>/

Children, young girls—some as young as 9 years old—are being bought and sold for sex in America. The average age for a young woman being sold for sex is now 13 years old.

This is America’s dirty little secret.

Sex trafficking—especially when it comes to the buying and selling of young girls—has become big business in America, the fastest growing business in organized crime and the second most-lucrative commodity traded illegally after drugs and guns.

As investigative journalist Amy Fine Collins notes,

“It’s become more lucrative and much safer to sell malleable teens than drugs or guns. A pound of heroin or an AK-47 can be retailed once, but a young girl can be sold 10 to 15 times a day—and a ‘righteous’ pimp confiscates 100 percent of her earnings.”

Consider this: every two minutes, a child is exploited in the sex industry.

According to USA Today, adults purchase children for sex at least 2.5 million times a year in the United States.

Who buys a child for sex? Otherwise ordinary men from all walks of life.

“They could be your co-worker, doctor, pastor or spouse,” writes journalist Tim Swarens, who spent more than a year investigating the sex trade in America.

In Georgia alone, it is estimated that 7,200 men (half of them in their 30s) seek to purchase sex with adolescent girls each month, averaging roughly 300 a day.

On average, a child might be raped by 6,000 men during a five-year period of servitude.

It is estimated that at least 100,000 children—girls and boys—are bought and sold for sex in the U.S. every year, with as many as 300,000 children in danger of being trafficked each year. Some of these children are forcefully abducted, others are runaways, and still others are sold into the system by relatives and acquaintances.

“Human trafficking—the commercial sexual exploitation of American children and women, via the Internet, strip clubs, escort services, or street prostitution—is on its way to becoming one of the worst crimes in the U.S.,” said prosecutor Krishna Patel.

This is an industry that revolves around cheap sex on the fly, with young girls and women who are sold to 50 men each day for $25 apiece, while their handlers make $150,000 to $200,000 per child each year.

This is not a problem found only in big cities.

It’s happening everywhere, right under our noses, in suburbs, cities and towns across the nation.

As Ernie Allen of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children points out,

“The only way not to find this in any American city is simply not to look for it.”

Don’t fool yourselves into believing that this is merely a concern for lower income communities or immigrants.

It’s not.

It is estimated that there are 100,000 to 150,000 under-aged child sex workers in the U.S. These girls aren’t volunteering to be sex slaves. They’re being lured—forced—trafficked into it. In most cases, they have no choice.

In order to avoid detection (in some cases aided and abetted by the police) and cater to male buyers’ demand for sex with different women, pimps and the gangs and crime syndicates they work for have turned sex trafficking into a highly mobile enterprise, with trafficked girls, boys and women constantly being moved from city to city, state to state, and country to country.

For instance, the Baltimore-Washington area, referred to as The Circuit, with its I-95 corridor dotted with rest stops, bus stations and truck stops, is a hub for the sex trade.

No doubt about it: this is a highly profitable, highly organized and highly sophisticated sex trafficking business that operates in towns large and small, raking in upwards of $9.5 billion a year in the U.S. alone by abducting and selling young girls for sex.

Every year, the girls being bought and sold gets younger and younger.

The average age of those being trafficked is 13. Yet as the head of a group that combats trafficking pointed out,

“Let’s think about what average means. That means there are children younger than 13. That means 8-, 9-, 10-year-olds.“

“For every 10 women rescued, there are 50 to 100 more women who are brought in by the traffickers. Unfortunately, they’re not 18- or 20-year-olds anymore,” noted a 25-year-old victim of trafficking. “They’re minors as young as 13 who are being trafficked. They’re little girls.”

Where did this appetite for young girls come from?

Look around you.

Young girls have been sexualized for years now in music videos, on billboards, in television ads, and in clothing stores. Marketers have created a demand for young flesh and a ready supply of over-sexualized children.

“All it takes is one look at MySpace photos of teens to see examples—if they aren’t imitating porn they’ve actually seen, they’re imitating the porn-inspired images and poses they’ve absorbed elsewhere,” writes Jessica Bennett for Newsweek. “Latex, corsets and stripper heels, once the fashion of porn stars, have made their way into middle and high school.”

This is what Bennett refers to as the “pornification of a generation.”

“In a market that sells high heels for babies and thongs for tweens, it doesn’t take a genius to see that sex, if not porn, has invaded our lives,” concludes Bennett. “Whether we welcome it or not, television brings it into our living rooms and the Web brings it into our bedrooms. According to a 2007 study from the University of Alberta, as many as 90 percent of boys and 70 percent of girls aged 13 to 14 have accessed sexually explicit content at least once.”

In other words, the culture is grooming these young people to be preyed upon by sexual predators. And then we wonder why our young women are being preyed on, trafficked and abused?

Social media makes it all too easy. As one news center reported,

“Finding girls is easy for pimps. They look on MySpace, Facebook, and other social networks. They and their assistants cruise malls, high schools and middle schools. They pick them up at bus stops. On the trolley. Girl-to-girl recruitment sometimes happens.”

Foster homes and youth shelters have also become prime targets for traffickers.

Rarely do these girls enter into prostitution voluntarily. Many start out as runaways or throwaways, only to be snatched up by pimps or larger sex rings. Others, persuaded to meet up with a stranger after interacting online through one of the many social networking sites, find themselves quickly initiated into their new lives as sex slaves.

Debbie, a straight-A student who belonged to a close-knit Air Force family living in Phoenix, Ariz., is an example of this trading of flesh. Debbie was 15 when she was snatched from her driveway by an acquaintance-friend. Forced into a car, Debbie was bound and taken to an unknown location, held at gunpoint and raped by multiple men. She was then crammed into a small dog kennel and forced to eat dog biscuits. Debbie’s captors advertised her services on Craigslist. Those who responded were often married with children, and the money that Debbie “earned” for sex was given to her kidnappers. The gang raping continued. After searching the apartment where Debbie was held captive, police finally found Debbie stuffed in a drawer under a bed. Her harrowing ordeal lasted for 40 days.

While Debbie was fortunate enough to be rescued, others are not so lucky. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, nearly 800,000 children go missing every year (roughly 2,185 children a day).

With a growing demand for sexual slavery and an endless supply of girls and women who can be targeted for abduction, this is not a problem that’s going away anytime soon.

For those trafficked, it’s a nightmare from beginning to end.

Those being sold for sex have an average life expectancy of seven years, and those years are a living nightmare of endless rape, forced drugging, humiliation, degradation, threats, disease, pregnancies, abortions, miscarriages, torture, pain, and always the constant fear of being killed or, worse, having those you love hurt or killed.

Peter Landesman paints the full horrors of life for those victims of the sex trade in his New York Times article “The Girls Next Door”:

Andrea told me that she and the other children she was held with were frequently beaten to keep them off-balance and obedient. Sometimes they were videotaped while being forced to have sex with adults or one another. Often, she said, she was asked to play roles: the therapist patient or the obedient daughter. Her cell of sex traffickers offered three age ranges of sex partners–toddler to age 4, 5 to 12 and teens–as well as what she called a “damage group.” “In the damage group, they can hit you or do anything they want to,” she explained. “Though sex always hurts when you are little, so it’s always violent, everything was much more painful once you were placed in the damage group.”

What Andrea described next shows just how depraved some portions of American society have become.

“They’d get you hungry then to train you” to have oral sex. “They put honey on a man. For the littlest kids, you had to learn not to gag. And they would push things in you so you would open up better. We learned responses. Like if they wanted us to be sultry or sexy or scared. Most of them wanted you scared. When I got older, I’d teach the younger kids how to float away so things didn’t hurt.”

Immigration and customs enforcement agents at the Cyber Crimes Center in Fairfax, Va., report that when it comes to sex, the appetites of many Americans have now changed. What was once considered abnormal is now the norm. These agents are tracking a clear spike in the demand for harder-core pornography on the Internet. As one agent noted,

“We’ve become desensitized by the soft stuff; now we need a harder and harder hit.”

This trend is reflected by the treatment many of the girls receive at the hands of the drug traffickers and the men who purchase them. Peter Landesman interviewed Rosario, a Mexican woman who had been trafficked to New York and held captive for a number of years. She said:

“In America, we had ‘special jobs.’ Oral sex, anal sex, often with many men. Sex is now more adventurous, harder.”

A common thread woven through most survivors’ experiences is being forced to go without sleep or food until they have met their sex quota of at least 40 men. One woman recounts how her trafficker made her lie face down on the floor when she was pregnant and then literally jumped on her back, forcing her to miscarry.

Holly Austin Smith (image on the right) was abducted when she was 14 years old, raped, and then forced to prostitute herself. Her pimp, when brought to trial, was only made to serve a year in prison.

Barbara Amaya was repeatedly sold between traffickers, abused, shot, stabbed, raped, kidnapped, trafficked, beaten, and jailed all before she was 18 years old.

“I had a quota that I was supposed to fill every night. And if I didn’t have that amount of money, I would get beat, thrown down the stairs. He beat me once with wire coat hangers, the kind you hang up clothes, he straightened it out and my whole back was bleeding.”

As David McSwane recounts in a chilling piece for the Herald-Tribune:

“In Oakland Park, an industrial Fort Lauderdale suburb, federal agents in 2011 encountered a brothel operated by a married couple. Inside ‘The Boom Boom Room,’ as it was known, customers paid a fee and were given a condom and a timer and left alone with one of the brothel’s eight teenagers, children as young as 13. A 16-year-old foster child testified that he acted as security, while a 17-year-old girl told a federal judge she was forced to have sex with as many as 20 men a night.”

One particular sex trafficking ring catered specifically to migrant workers employed seasonally on farms throughout the southeastern states, especially the Carolinas and Georgia, although it’s a flourishing business in every state in the country. Traffickers transport the women from farm to farm, where migrant workers would line up outside shacks, as many as 30 at a time, to have sex with them before they were transported to yet another farm where the process would begin all over again.

This growing evil is, for all intents and purposes, out in the open.

Trafficked women and children are advertised on the internet, transported on the interstate, and bought and sold in swanky hotels.

Indeed, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People, the government’s war on sex trafficking—much like the government’s war on terrorism, drugs and crime—has become a perfect excuse for inflicting more police state tactics (police check points, searches, surveillance, and heightened security) on a vulnerable public, while doing little to make our communities safer.

So what can you do?

Educate yourselves and your children about this growing menace in our communities.

Stop feeding the monster: Sex trafficking is part of a larger continuum in America that runs the gamut from homelessness, poverty, and self-esteem issues to sexualized television, the glorification of a pimp/ho culture—what is often referred to as the pornification of America—and a billion dollar sex industry built on the back of pornography, music, entertainment, etc.

This epidemic is largely one of our own making, especially in a corporate age where the value placed on human life takes a backseat to profit. It is estimated that the porn industry brings in more money than Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Yahoo.

Call on your city councils, elected officials and police departments to make the battle against sex trafficking a top priority, more so even than the so-called war on terror and drugs and the militarization of law enforcement.

Stop prosecuting adults for victimless “crimes” such as growing lettuce in their front yard and focus on putting away the pimps and buyers who victimize these young women.

Finally, the police need to do a better job of training, identifying and responding to these issues; communities and social services need to do a better job of protecting runaways, who are the primary targets of traffickers; legislators need to pass legislation aimed at prosecuting traffickers and “johns,” the buyers who drive the demand for sex slaves; and hotels need to stop enabling these traffickers, by providing them with rooms and cover for their dirty deeds.

That so many women and children continue to be victimized, brutalized and treated like human cargo is due to three things: one, a consumer demand that is increasingly lucrative for everyone involved—except the victims; two, a level of corruption so invasive on both a local and international scale that there is little hope of working through established channels for change; and three, an eerie silence from individuals who fail to speak out against such atrocities.

But the truth is that we are all guilty of contributing to this human suffering. The traffickers are guilty. The consumers are guilty. The corrupt law enforcement officials are guilty. The women’s groups who do nothing are guilty. The foreign peacekeepers and aid workers who contribute to the demand for sex slaves are guilty. Most of all, every individual who does not raise a hue and cry over the atrocities being committed against women and children in almost every nation around the globe—including the United States—is guilty.

1. All heir must be female.

2. Each heir must represent the colour and a theme of the generation (i.e. hair, makeup, clothing), but brightly colored skin is not necessary (these aren’t actually berry Sims, that’s the joke). Of course, this is optional but a big portion of the fun.

3. One room has to be dedicated to the heir and need to be decorated based on their colour and theme. (a bedroom is the most practical)

4. Each of the heir’s name has to be almost similar to the colour that they are representing (i.e. the colour is rose, therefore the name can be Rosie) and the last name can only be Berry.

Umineko Post-Arc-4 Theorypost

Um. Wow. Okay. So I just finished Umineko’s fourth arc, and that was A Lot wow. Anyway, at this point I want to do an Umineko theorypost, inspired by my vague recollection that @itsbenedict (whose recommendation was what got me to start actively working through the game rather than just idly having it on my to-play-eventually pile) did one when he reached this point in the story. I figure it could be pretty fun to compare my notes from this point in the story with his, once I’ve gotten to the end and don’t need to worry about spoilers.

So here’s my theorypost, then. Below the break: major Umineko spoilers, as well as some incidental Higurashi spoilers.

Let’s start with the magic system, and let’s divide it into two broad categories: magic in the actual world, and magic in meta-space. The first sort includes summoning minions, reviving the dead, et cetera. The second sort includes being able to speak in red and blue, to cause something to cease to exist by arguing sufficiently persuasively for its nonexistence, to time-loop the island, et cetera.

Magic in the actual world seems pretty clearly at this point to run on a mix of imagination, deceptive scene-setting, and unreliable narration; but meta-space magic seems to run on less consistent rules. The time-looping seems like it ultimately boils down to unreliable narration as well, with the stories-in-bottles, and speaking in blue isn’t actually overtly magical (aside from the bit where it directly injures Beatrice, which is a similar sort of mystery to the red’s ability to render people or things nonexistent), but speaking in red seems pretty unambiguously magical in a fashion whose true explanation I haven’t yet figured out. I expect an explanation to eventually arise in the form of some sort of actually-authoritative source on the events emerging, but I’m not yet sure what form that source will take, because I’m not sure how a mundane source could be as trustworthy as the red seems to be.

Next up: the witch’s riddle. Clearly solvable, and I suspect that had I been cleverer I’d have been able to solve it based on the discussion in the third game and the knowledge that the solution is reachable through that discussion; but I haven’t, in fact, solved it myself. It seems likely that the solution involves Kuwadorian in some capacity, because “solving the riddle involves finding Kuwadorian” seems more likely than Eva having solved both of those mysteries independently (and she does need to have solved the Kuwadorian mystery, she couldn’t have lied about that, because if she’d gone “I was hiding in the extra hidden mansion deep in the forest, but I can’t show you where it is” she would have come across as even more suspicious to the investigators than she in fact did.) I lack clear hypotheses, beyond that.

One detail that struck me about the fourth game in particular is that there are a lot of weird weapons flying around. We’ve got the golden thread attested to by Gohda and Kumasawa and Kyrie, we’ve got whatever it was that pit-trapped everyone in the dining room, we’ve got whatever Kanon used to cut through the bars... and, of course, there are the Seven Stakes of Purgatory, which are somewhat less mysterious in that they could easily just be fancy mundane stakes, but are still indicative of the general trend of nonstandard weapons around the island, with no obvious leads on where exactly they came from. It’s very possible that all of these weapons are unrelated to one another, but it’s also occurred to me as a possibility that there may be some sort of designer of fancy custom weaponry, off of the island but contributing resources to one or more of the parties involved here. This is a pretty weak hypothesis as far as they go, like I only give it maybe 10% odds of actually being true, but I figure it’s still worth mentioning.

Moving on to specific characters:

Kinzo is dead. It’s unclear where his corpse has been being kept, but it has to have been refrigerated in some capacity in order to avoid either decomposing excessively or smelling up the house prior to its being burnt, so that limits the possibilities somewhat. Nanjo and Genji are definitely in on the his-being-dead part, and Krauss probably is as well. Nanjo, at least, is in on the his-corpse-being-preserved part as well, given that he never expresses confusion over finding the corpse in the boiler.

Battler’s theory that someone has taken on Kinzo’s name seems off in a similar fashion to his theory that someone had taken on Kanon’s name, even if it wasn’t explicitly denied like the other theory was; but in absence of any better ideas about what’s going on there I’m tentatively subscribing it for now.

My current top suspect for who’s acting in Kinzo’s place is Genji, because he’s the only one who evidence suggests that Kinzo genuinely trusted and who would be able to persuade others to accept him as acting as Kinzo without the siblings’ squabbles leading them to try to sabotage his authority. (Nanjo, although also trusted by Kinzo in some capacity, seems much more in-the-dark about parts like the mass-sacrifice stuff and less likely to be accepted as The New Kinzo by the siblings.)

This theory may or may not be hindered by the red truth that Genji isn’t a killer, because it’s unclear if that was a general comment or if it was made specifically about the Genji of the first game; but even assuming it holds across all four games, it seems plausibly loopholable by way of his having others do the killing for him. This would require some way of tricking or persuading Gohda and Kumasawa into reporting both him and Kinzo as separately present at the conference in the fourth game, and reporting him as having been killed; but that’s a problem that every other plausible candidate would have as well, since everyone not in the cousin room was (reportedly) at the conference, so it’s not a problem specific to Genji.

Nanjo remains a mystery thus far. There’s no way he’s unaware of Kinzo’s death, and I get general vibes of suspiciousness off of him in light of his knowing far more than he says about various important Kinzo-related secrets, but there are no specific incidents I feel any particular inclination to pin on him, just a general sense of “he’s plausibly an accomplice to some of the stuff going on”. He’s in a similar not-a-killer-but-maybe-only-in-the-context-of-the-first-game-it’s-unclear boat to Genji.

Kumasawa is also a mystery thus far. Her tendency to try to run from danger leaves open the possibility of her doing things in secret while nobody has eyes on her; but unlike Genji and Nanjo she lacks the degree of clear closeness to Kinzo that would mark her as particularly suspicious. She definitely has something more going on than is currently clear, especially in light of her connection to Virgilia (more on that later), but for the moment my thoughts about her are pretty fuzzy and vaguely-formed.

Gohda, by contrast, I’m relatively willing to trust as being basically who he’s presented as. Likes cooking, likes showing off, dislikes being in danger, prone to petty obnoxiousness against the other servants, but he’s not in Kinzo’s inner circle and he lacks any obvious motive for involvement in the murders. Maybe there are subtle cues of suspiciousness I’m missing, but for the time being, I’m inclined to class him as among the most straightforward and easy-to-understand of the characters.

Kanon and Shannon are in Kinzo’s inner circle at least somewhat, if less closely than Genji, and most likely know things they haven’t shared (even if I don’t know what things specifically). Moreso than any of the other servants, they’re actively working against the murders happening, and have clear motives for doing so with their respective romantic interest in Jessica and George. While they have some amount of motive for knocking off disapproving guardians in particular, none of the bunches of murders that happen resemble what such an attempt would look like, and so I’m pretty confident they’re not doing that and are instead relatively straightforwardly on the murder-is-bad-actually side of things.

Also, they have magic. I mean, not really, but they do things mysterious enough that they seem like they have magic, and with the fourth game’s proverbial spilling-ink-on-the-white-squares their magic can no longer be chalked up entirely to unreliable narration, because testimony of it managed to reach Battler through Kyrie’s call. Shannon spent most of her time shielding against threats invisible to everyone else, such that her seeming magic is relatively easy to dismiss; but Kanon, with his ability to cut through the various bars in their way using something that looks like a glowy red blade, is harder to explain. I’m stumped on that one for the time being, assuming the implausible custom-weapon-designer hypothesis is false.

Krauss knows things. Among the characters who Kinzo distrusted, I suspect him to be the best-informed, if still not actually all that well-informed relative to Kinzo’s inner circle, about Kinzo’s various machinations; he knows that the gold is real, he most likely knows about Kinzo’s death (and, if he doesn’t, he definitely at least heavily suspects), he knows that the servants are in on Kinzo’s plans, et cetera. That said, it’s not clear how much more beyond that he does or doesn’t know.

He’s one of the first to be killed in the first two arcs, and honestly has much less incentive for murder than any of his siblings given his being the current top contender for the succession, so I’m inclined to trust that he’s not one of the murderers.

I’m not all that confident in my read on Natsuhi, but for the moment, I’m inclined to take her as at least moderately suspicious. Unlikely to be the sole murderer in any of the games, but potentially one of the murderers. The first game, in particular, gives her a clear motive, with her fight with Krauss over the gold being followed with (a) his death and (b) her grab for power by way of visiting Kinzo’s study and then beginning to present herself as his successor. Supporting this is the detail that, in the third game, she was gouged with the Stake of Satan, which while not a super reliable metric of what’s up with her is definitely at least a tick in favor of anger being a thing that motivates her, which fits with Krauss being among the first twilight’s victims in the game wherein she was particularly angered.

Eva is, while probably not the sole murderer in the third game, most likely at least one of them. (Not the sole murderer for two reasons: first, Nanjo’s death while she was occupied shooting Battler; second, George and Hideyoshi’s deaths, which don’t line up either with her love for Hideyoshi (which is pretty unambiguously genuine) or her desire to make George her successor.) She had means (with Hideyoshi’s covering for her and making openings), she had motive (the gold she’d found), she was the sole survivor of the incident, and just generally all evidence suggests her culprithood.

Hideyoshi, assuming that the Eva-as-third-game-murderer hypothesis is correct, was her accomplice. More generally, despite his tendency to deescalate the sibling-fights, he’s pretty firmly in her corner when it comes to wanting the money and wanting George to be the successor. I’m thus inclined to mostly treat the pair of them as a unit, and assume that important information known by one is known by the other as well, although it’s not clear for the moment that either of them does know much in the way of important information, outside of the case where Eva managed to find the gold.

Rudolf has mostly not had much chance to show us what’s up with him, having died on the first twilight in three of the four games and not accomplished all that much prior to his death in the remaining one. Probably the most striking thing that happened with him was his confidence, in the first game, that he would be murdered that night, as he in fact was; while he framed it at the time just in terms of the inheritance dispute of the moment, it seems plausible, in light of Beatrice’s story about his making some play six years ago that involved Battler in some capacity and ultimately led to all the murders happening, that that play of his was the true reason he was worried. Sadly, I have very little idea what he actually did back then, beyond “probably something, unless Beatrice was lying about something important having happened then, which I can’t totally write off as a possibility”.

Kyrie is the most overtly prone to Plotting of the bunch, but nonetheless seems pretty non-suspicious for the time being; when she’s not killed on the first twilight, she seems pretty genuine about turning her Plotting skills towards not dying, rather than infighting. Furthermore, she lacks any obvious motive for any of the murders that happen while she’s alive, and plenty of motive for making Rudolf’s murder in particular not happen. Thus I’m inclined to trust her.

Rosa is the single most suspicious person in the whole cast. In the second game, when she’s the one leading the survivors, she tosses around so much suspicion and paranoia-building that she comes across as deliberately sabotaging them. In the third game, she’s the one non-Eva person who’s found the gold, making her an obvious suspect there too, albeit less so than in the second given her death. I don’t think she’s the sole murderer of the second game, given that it ends with her being chomped by demons rather than escaping with the gold the way she’s trying to do, but she’s definitely among the more significant suspects. Oh, and let’s also toss in her history with Beatrice onto the reasons-to-suspect-her pile for good measure, because her “but I killed you!” rant just before her death in the third game didn’t make it seem like she was being entirely truthful about her “she fell off a cliff in a manner that I was moderately at fault for” story during the siblings’ conference, and thus she may well have a history of murder.

Jessica is another of the characters who I haven’t got a great read on. She likes Kanon, she’s rebellious towards but ultimately loves her parents, she gets Very Angry when people she cares about are murdered, and... that’s about all I’ve got. She seems pretty safe on the not-being-a-murderer front, but my sense of what’s actually going on with her is nongreat.

George is also probably not one of the murderers, but he’s at least not a complete write-off as a suspect in the way that Jessica is, given his level of martial-arts competence and his determination to fight Literally Everyone if they try to get between him and Shannon. Still, in practice there’s no evidence that anyone actually tripped over his Fight Everyone plan in that regard, and he doesn’t strike me as the type to preemptively do murders before being challenged, so I’m inclined to write him off on the basis of his lacking a motive.

Battler... has some interesting backstory stuff going on, with the reveal of his possibly being not the original Battler at all. For the time being, I’m inclined to continue trusting him as the Central Viewpoint Character Whose Observations Define The Boundaries Of Which Mysteries Need Explaining, since that role kind of inherently precludes his having seen the murders happen; but if Gameboard!Battler and Meta!Battler turn out to be more divergent than I currently believe them to be then I’ll have to revise that assessment.

Maria is, of the cousins, by far the most suspicious, and the only one who I genuinely think might be one of the murderers in some of the games. She has all these spells made for murder-related purposes, she explicitly has plans to kill the witch possessing Rosa (who is, of course, really Rosa herself), she’s allied with Beatrice, et cetera. Lots of points of suspicion. One particularly suspicious incident is Rosa’s death in the third game, given the two of them having been alone together; I’d be pretty non-shocked by her being the murderer there.

And then we come to Beatrice herself, who is by far the most mysterious member of the cast. According to Rosa’s testimony, she killed someone who looked just like the Beatrice of the portrait during her childhood, long before the events of the game; Captain Kawabata’s story about deliveries to Kuwadorian suddenly halting about thirty years ago (eighteen years prior to the main plot) seem to corroborate this. And yet Beatrice is able to show herself directly to Battler near the end of the fourth game, suggesting that an identical-looking person is alive and furthermore is one of the no-more-than-seventeen people on the island. If we suppose that she’s not secretly one of the seventeen previously-named non-Kinzo characters, then one of them has to be dead as well, which isn’t nearly as plausible as Kinzo’s death because Battler meets all of them at one point or another, so we’ve got to assume furthermore that this person who looks identical to the old dead Beatrice is furthermore actually identical with one of the seventeen.

In terms of pure physical resemblance, Eva is the obvious suspect; they have similar haircuts, and both Beatrice’s dress and Beatrice’s suit conveniently cover up the arm where Eva has the conspicuous tattoo. Their voices differ, as do their manners of speaking, but nonetheless that physical resemblance raises her slightly above the others on my suspicion pile. Her being dead at the time of her would-be interaction with Battler would ordinarily be a significant problem, except that Beatrice explicitly states in red that she’s dead at the time she kills Battler at the end of the fourth game, making it no more of a problem for Eva (being also-dead-at-that-time) than it would be for any of the other possible suspects.

(I have no idea how that particular murder happened, incidentally.)

My other, weirder suspect for Beatrice’s identity is Kumasawa. She’s old enough that I have no idea how she’d pull off the disguise, but she’s good enough at flitting around offscreen that she’s got plenty of opportunity to set scenarios up, and furthermore she’s old enough to possibly be the dead-eighteen-years-ago Beatrice’s implausible identical twin. Honestly I rank this one somewhat higher than I rank the Eva possibility, because while the physical-appearance issue is admittedly tricky, the identical-twin possibility explains some stuff relatively neatly. Under this hypothesis, she’d presumably be exaggerating her age somewhat in her Kumasawa persona, which could potentially explain part of the gap in how-she’d-pull-off-the-disguise. The main challenge to this hypothesis is that she was the third subject of the same ambiguous declaration-in-red of non-killer-ness that Genji and Nanjo were subject to, which in light of Beatrice being confirmed in red to kill Battler at the end of the fourth game means that she can be Beatrice only if that declaration was restricted in scope to the first game only.

So that’s all the humans on the island. I’m going to refrain from talking much about the characters in the Ange flashforward, because for the time being they seem relatively unimportant to the main events of the game; they reveal a bunch of interesting information, with the hundred-million-yen packages they received-but-didn’t-take and with Ange’s exploration of magic having significantly improved my understanding of the rules at play there and so forth, but they don’t have any more direct involvement than that as far as I can tell. Eva’s mysterious resurrection-and-subsequent-death might be another mystery for the pile, or might be just more of the same magic-of-unreliable-narration that drove the rest of the scene in which it took place.

Next up, the various more-inherently-magical figures:

EVA, MARIA, ANGE, and Goldsmith are respectively Eva, Maria, Ange, and Kinzo. Not much more needs to be said here, I think.

Bernkastel and Lambdadelta are respectively Rika and Takano from Higurashi, except not really; they’re clearly related, but Bernkastel is somewhat less straightforwardly benevolent than Rika, and Lambdadelta is pretty different in a few ways from Takano (less creepy, more tsundere, more of a personal rival to Bernkastel where Takano’s relation to Rika was more impersonal, actually has magic beyond High Willpower). I’m not entirely clear on the precise relation there, and mostly it’s tangential to their role here, which is as more-powerful witches who occasionally interfere with Beatrice’s gameboard. They seem to exist exclusively in meta-space, with no direct involvement in the murders.

Sakutaro is a stuffed lion animated with magic (specifically the imagination-based version) in a mostly pretty self-explanatory fashion. The one big interesting thing there is that, judging by the way Beatrice choked on an attempted bit of red text when ANGE was forcing her out of the Golden Land, it seems like Rosa probably made a new vessel for him some time after killing the original (or before, I suppose, although that seems less likely); I’m not sure yet how that’s going to become significant, but I’m pretty sure it is.

Virgilia and Ronove have an interesting link to respectively Kumasawa and Genji. I’m not yet sure of the nature of that link, beyond that Virgilia has made a nonzero number of mackerel comments and was originally Kumasawa before waking up in the third game and that Ronove shares a name with Genji and directly alludes to himself as sort of magical parallel of his; but there’s definitely a link there. Given my preexisting suspicion of both Kumasawa and Genji, it seems relatively reasonable to think that the link might be more literal than it appears onscreen to be and they’re actually just the same people, although it’s also possible that something more complicated is going on with them.

Gaap... I’m honestly not sure what’s going on with her. Anthropomorphic personification of the pit-trap weapon, whatever that weapon happens to be? That’s the best I’ve got for her. The Chiester Sisters and the Seven Sisters of Purgatory are in a similar boat in that regard, respectively for the mysterious gold-thread weapon and the Seven Stakes of Purgatory. And then I’ve got even less idea what’s going on with the goats; I suppose if I wanted to force them into the same mold as the others I could argue that they’re anthropomorphic personifications of ordinarily mundane guns and clubs and so forth, but that seems like much more of a stretch than it was for the more-fantastical weapons, given the fashion in which they directly threaten people during the fourth game such that testimony of their doing so reaches Battler, so I haven’t really got any idea what’s going on with them.

So that’s the characters covered. For the most part, I lack any hypotheses on the individual locked rooms or on the fourth game’s mysterious testimonies, beyond the broad comments I’ve already made in my setting and character analyses; while I’ve got my various hypotheses on who did some of the murders, I’m sufficiently fuzzy on how most of them were done that I don’t have much to say on them that wasn’t already said by Battler at the end of the fourth game. As such, I think I’ll leave this post off here for now, and hope I haven’t forgotten to mention anything too important.

Since it is the surface that needs protection certain types of plants are better than others. Evergreen and bushy, dense growing plants have the greatest ability to soften the impact of raindrops and prevent soil grains from being splashed down hill.

Perhaps of even greater effectiveness are thicket or mat-forming plants. Plants of this type spread by suckers or root shoots or take root from trailing branches and in this manner bind a sizable area of soil. It is obvious, of course, that rapid-growing species give maximum protection faster than slow growing ones.

3. Alternatively, if you prefer a low-maintenance option that requires no watering and never having to climb the hillside to pull weeds, you might want to consider installing artificial turf.

Alright. It’s been a year and a half. Let’s do this again, sure.

Unlike last time, where people salting at me during the match contributed to a large portion of the character stereotype, I only have their gameplay to work off of this season. Mostly. Rage whispers have gone down significantly which honestly is a change that's good for everyone. {Nod nod.}

{Additional commentary by @demos-cloud​ will be in braces}, and my responses to her commentary will be italicized, since I’ve ah. Ranted to her about a lot of these before, and asked her to help proofread.

Elsword: Bullheaded, stubborn, and does not think very far ahead.

This is mostly thanks to the amount that they've built up Elsword's defensive options lately. The changes to Autoguard mean that Knight Emperor doesn't really have to worry even if he gets caught (I've had more games turned around thanks to that than I care to admit). Infinity Stoic is still a thing, not in the least helped by the large number of quick, stoic approaches and normals he has. Melee Elsword gameplay basically rewards LEEROY JENKINS. Rune Masters are surprisingly rare.

Aisha: Still Bullies.

This has always been the case. Though lately I've come to the realization that Aisha, and Void Princess' line in particular, usually stays out of PvP unless she has access to something dangerously close to hacking. Meditate+Trans slot cooldown drops are always popular, but Oz Sorcerer lives and dies depending on whether she can pretend-hack or not (looking at you, Angkor Millions and Shadow Body). Metamorphy's population likewise dropped drastically as soon as they nerfed the stoic on her >>X(Z). {Her damage output was also hit hard by the Impact Zone nerf in PvE.}

Rena: Slime.

There's been a lot of complaining about the changes to the NF system, though honestly it's probably better for PvP-health in the long term. Now, instead of basically being guaranteed to eat 3 cancelled Violent Attacks to the face in the middle of every single combo, you probably only have to worry about it happening once or twice per game. They're still really slippery, thanks in large part to physics bending over backwards around her and >>Z being so fast, though their PvP numbers have taken a drastic drop since the nerf.

Raven:

Basically only the oldest Raven mains are left, a corps of elite veterans who know their character and yours inside and- oh and I guess you have the bandwagon RH horde. {Man the bias is practically dripping out of your mouth here Ketsu.} The majority of my Raven matches are against players who I recognize on sight, though. The canon Raven has certainly been getting spoiled, comparatively speaking, though the fact that KoG nerfed M.Maximum Drive almost immediately is a good sign. RH is still probably the most consequence-free Raven at the moment; he doesn't really have to worry about taking combos because it's extremely likely he'll be able to mash a Spread out and revenge-catch you if there's even the tiniest delay or mistake.

{PvE is full of old, rich, Ravens as well. BMs/FBs especially are the oldest and most funded. Yeah they know their class in and out, but they’re also not above shelling out $200 to +11 that glorious Void weapon. VCs are dead.}

Eve: Nasod Bitch. Runs on money. {はい、はい。}

Eve on the whole is very confrontation-adverse, and all three of her classes avoid direct combat. Good thing for her, too; aside from the Exotic line Eve's combo game is so poor she can barely hold anyone in place on her own. All three Eves have very strong utilities kits which are supposed to come with a weak damage-per-hit ratio, but Eve players are already very strongly conditioned to spoil her rotten. Nobody's ever been accused of spending too little on her, after all. Codes 4v1 and Sariel both just dunk on melee-centric characters, and Ultimate has enough unsafe-cancels and core synergy that you'll be spending more time eating lasers than spears. {Like I’ve been saying for the past four years, Eve’s Core Release system was built for CN. Of course she has the best Core synergy out of all Eves.} Illusion Thorns' debuff field really should not trigger core. Raven's lingering skill effects (grenade fires and smoke clouds) have NEVER triggered his core, and those at least deal damage, but I guess even KoG isn't tired of spoiling Eve just yet. {Maybe it’s because Illusion Thorns’ debuff area only lasts a measly two seconds compared to Raven’s lingering AoEs (dead laugh).} Raven’s lingering AoEs also only last for a couple seconds, too, though. {oh.}

Chung: HERE I GO. {HERE I GO!!}

Hoo boy. Okay. After the absolute Chung dominance in the 1v1 tournament, there's been a significant rise in Chung PvP populations. Sure, Base Chung has Heavy Stance to mitigate being slow and getting caught, but these three basically never have to deal with such puny things as "consequences" and Heavy Stance itself has actually been vanishingly rare. {DC really should not have so many Heavy Stance/stoic opportunities, given that his whole backstory is based around being faster and thus, being less defensive. IP’s ridiculously high attack speed is abnormal and needs to die. Even back in S1 it was a pain to deal with…} Back Blast and Reload are core skills not because of utility or reload, but because they're such hard to deal with panic buttons when strung together. Cannonball management is a total farce. Super spoiled, getting amazing tools and mod skills with each update. A few significant differences between them:

Comet: Basically indestructible. Will not die. A rocket powered turtle who can strike you from anywhere in the map and always has an advantageous position. The new goddess of PvP, stripping Yama Raja of the title. You could just tell that a couple of the tournament finalists were screwing around and winning anyway, and that flagrant disregard for consequences has been adopted by the bandwagoners. {I feel like having one of the IP semifinalists intentionally handicap himself of the class’ best skills, fool around, and still manage a strong victory.. Really says a lot about the class’ current standing.}

Phantom: Homing Ruthless attacks for days. Mod Shooting Star caused a lot of passive ruthless to get stripped, but I guess there was enough of a Chung tantrum that they got it back on base Shooting Star AND in M.Burning Punisher. Could probably win a game blindfolded thanks to all the high-damage homing at his disposal. A non-berserk awakening is so rare you honestly think it's a glitch. {Remember when it was only like a 25% activation chance. lmao.}

Centurret: After a long and arduous process of moderately intelligent cockroaches bashing on keyboards tested every possible configuration, tactics have been finely reduced to "if your dog craps on enough lawns, someone is going to step in it." Instant-hit Grav Shots are far more than any character deserves, especially when they have practically no vertical limit, and whoever approved of this as an Siege mode option should be spaghettified.

Ara:

Lately, the number of Aras who fully depend on the X or ^X loop has gone down. Devi is still incredibly oppressive, able to basically slam their face on the skill bar whenever they're in trouble to turn it around with any one of their many, many incredible utility actives (with skill storage). Shakti populations have been on the rise in comparison, though as a Shakti main myself I can't really comment on any other trends without being... more biased than usual. {Dead in PvE, though very willing to shell out money. More-so than other Ara classes, I find (even Devis, yes!)} Apsaras generally rely way too much on Kite or Suppression and barely have two brain cells to rub together, having godawful combo maintenance outside of the aforementioned X loop, despite Ara's strong kit. {They changed how ZZXX works how else am I supposed to do fancy combos nowwwww} It feels like if they did have any more to work with they would've job changed to Devi by now.

Elesis:

Population is in decline, but still powerful. Empire Sword still has some of the most safe combo maintenance in the game, and it's exceedingly rare for her to make anything remotely resembling a mistake. {The fact that she has such a high DPS ratio in PvP really hurts, what gives.} INJECTION finally got the nerf it deserved and is starting to sound like a word again. Fire Wallsis is still horrifically oppressive if it goes off, however, and reduces many games against her to "play perfectly or die."

Add:

Doom Bringers are vanishingly rare. Dominators basically all spontaneously ceased to exist once Charged Impulsar got nerfed and they realized they'd actually have to try in PvP again. Paradox is, once again, the most popular PvP Add, and for some reason still has an infinite. Purple is the color of bullies, it turns out. {Death to purples.}

Lu: Almost as Leeroy Jenkins as Elsword, but not a large sample to work with.

If the dive that magnetically homes in on targets wasn't enough of a giveaway, Lu's ability to zero in on a target is still very high. Diangelion's switch-attacks have the same bizarre hitboxes and gravity as ever. Lu in general seems to be about throwing giant hitboxes around the map and hoping they hit something, and her combo game is so safe that there really isn't need for precision there, either. {If she can’t hit you with a command normal or a skill, she’ll lag you out with her FPS-killing abilities. Surprisingly not very high up on the whale list, and even lower on the whales-for-fashion list.}

Ciel mains still don't exist. {Nobu would be sad to hear this.}

Rose: Rich, but shallow.

You're basically not even a Rose main if you don't have an 11+, the same way you're basically not a Chung main if you can't get 4+ X-drops in a single launch. {I am apparently no longer a Rose/F. Gunner main. Okay.} Their gameplay shows no personality to speak of, and you'll be fighting the same kind of Rose tactics at Rank C that you will at Star. Despite being the only non-Chung in the 1v1 Finals, Minerva has actually seen something of a population decrease lately. I imagine a lot of players disliked the fact that the player got to finals by using a Freeze Grenade infinite. 

{POs seem like one of the most funded Rose classes, despite being lowtier in both PvP and PvE. About 20% of them have an elitist complex, and another 40% only play her because “OMG MECHA WAIFU”. I’ve only encountered like two POs who acknowledge that she feels and plays nothing like her DFO counterpart, and the fact that I had to argue with a super stubborn NA forumer about this is flat-out stupid. Ah, also. TBs are dead now. Unsurprisingly.}  PvP Rose is actually mostly TB thanks to her pseudo-meditate.

Ain: I was horribly, terribly, no-good very bad wrong about the prediction last time.

PvP Ain is as homogenous across all three paths as Rena: {はい、はい。} Base Ain normals are so strong that the only ones his other classes really use are dives. Otherwise, you can treat all Ains the same. Watch out for airdashes, stomps, Xes, and basically a full kit of backwards melee hitboxes (we got rid of that on the Polar Bear suit for a reason, right? Right??) which are all so strong that, even though the bug has been patched out, Schwert Platzen is still a core PvP skill for all Ains. Bluhen is very rare in PvP, due mostly to the fact that he doesn't have a dive combo. Richter basically plays "The floor is lava" the entire game. The stomp noise is as annoying and stuck in my head as Aisha's "HYA" voice clip now and is a standout among Ain's generally obnoxious sound design. {Maybe if KoG gave us more combo options my fellow Richters wouldn’t have to sink this low.}

PREMISE:

Top Secret and yet also chronically underfunded, understaffed, misunderstood government office focused on extraterrestrial affairs - primarily, keeping their presence a secret, helping stranded extraterrestrials integrate into Earth society, processing planned visits, occasionally preventing mass invasions - with a basically nonexistent budget, since the people making the decision on where to allocate money can’t know the truth. This means cobbling together disguises with the help of a local community theatre department or high school art program, macguyvering weapons together from duct tape, staplers and tech that’s 20 years out of date, and relying on an unpaid (extraterrestrial) intern to handle social media updates and PR.  3D prints most of their supplies. TAKES PLACE IN LAS VEGAS probably. Where else would you hide the fantastical?

Potentially fatal extraterrestrial parasite found? Let’s hope roach killer spray works on it. I think there’s some under the break room kitchen sink.

Large scale invasion by the Truorans imminent? We avoided the last one with Tweeter - do they have Tweeter? Do we know anyone who can communicate in Truoran? No - let’s try emojis then, I guess.

Zero mind-control memory wipe devices - unless they can convince an alien with those abilities to do it, they pretty much have to rely on chicanery, natural skeptical instincts, and bribery (as a last resort, because, budget).

(side note - super tempted to say it’s old enough to have been ‘Ye Olde Extraterrestrial-Earth Transfer Support’ but over time the ‘olde’ and ‘support’ got dropped so now it’s just YEET)

HEROINE

Bad at delegating - takes on too much too often (usually because she’s so used to not having budget to hire more people to do it). Somewhat high-strung. Prone to trying every new ‘this will change your life’ trend out there but never makes it more than a month or two before falling back on bad habits. Excellent cook, often of very, very weird combinations in hopes of landing on the right mix for some of her clients (even though many of them find the practice of coming together as a group to independently ingest energy sources bizarre). Staunch believer in trying for peace first - just because we can’t communicate doesn’t mean we don’t have common ground, and just because something is unexplained or unfamiliar doesn’t mean it’s dangerous. Too tired to be scared of anything, which is good, because sometimes the existential questioning of her reality and the world beyond it can be derailing. Went straight into the military after high school, which is how she ended up learning about extraterrestrial outreach. Still keeps a lot of service habits. Currently trying to wean off of caffeine (it’s not going well). Has no social life because she is always on call for work. Angry and hurting about the cruelty of the world--not just hers, but universally--but tries to ignore the anger in favor of doing small things to make it better.

Love Interests

Alien 1: Alien who integrated into Earth six-seven years ago when heroine was first being assigned to the department. Has some serious telepathic ability, which allows them to conveniently convince anyone looking at them that they’re seeing a regular, normal human being, instead of what they actually are (basically energy-based, rather than having a solid manifest form). Unfortunately, they also kind of uses it willynilly to ‘convince’ people of over things, because they don’t believe in subscribing to human ethical codes except when convenient, which makes them a teensy bit untrustworthy. Generally seems content (even happy) to be on Earth, making a significant effort to establish a long-term life. Occasionally acts as a consultant to the department since their ability makes them generally able to communicate with most species, so long as they produce rational thoughts on a similar level, but refuses to help for free, dealing instead in favors (doesn’t need money since they can just convince people to fork over twenty bucks or food for free or whatever they need). Super shady about their backstory. Does not deal in absolutes - their perception of reality is somewhat more multi-tiered and probability-based. Originally from a species with collective thought/memory - something they were shut out of shortly after arriving on Earth, without explanation. Semi-dealing with the trauma of that, and waffles between being elated with their independence, and feeling a profound sense of loss and severance. 

The Techie: “I have a computer science engineering degree from MIT and I took this lousy-paying government job because I thought I’d get to hack into alien spaceships but instead I’m basically the Help Desk for Earth-integrating aliens.” Eternally despairs over the incompatibility of Earth tech and extraterrestrial tech - though they’ve managed to make a few basic communication consoles work retroactively and never give up on writing some kind of code or program that will ‘click’. Teensy bit of a mad scientist when it comes to dismantling alien stuff to try and figure out how it works. Perennial smarta--. Knows how critical they are and milks it - basically constantly threatens to leave and go work for Fwoogle (particularly when called upon to do something like unjam the printer). Generally has to be bribed to participate, but more reliable than they pretend. Sociable nerd. Constantly dealing with parents who are disappointed because they expected them to be an Aluminum Valley billionaire by now. Builds apps that provide helpful tips for integrating aliens, and programs the 3D printer to print out disguise pieces.

Actually does quit to go work for Fwoogle or a startup in their own route to avoid coworker issue - except they get sucked back in to at least helping due to some major trouble.

The oh shoot we ended up in space for the final act route - and not only did we end up in space, but we are stranded on a ship that uses totally different tech than ours?

Alien 2: SUPER UNHAPPY about being stuck in this backwater solar system, with such a horrible, rude, unpleasant, backwards-thinking, awful-acting dominant species. May or may not be plotting to wipe them all off the face of the planet. Very volatile (in a literal sense - their surface tends to react explosively with Earth’s atmosphere), though they are trying hard to control it because that’s potentially fatal. From a very aggressive species that has a narrative of peace-through-conquest - but their last mission to do so, there was a catastrophic failure, and that’s the last Alien 2 knows. 

Private Industry/Casino Owner (Alien 3): From a shapeshifting species that is essentially adaptive - becoming more and more like their surroundings as time goes on, which means they have super easily integrated into Earth society. Unfortunately, they arrived on Earth back when the Mafia was running Vegas, so, those are the behaviors that are integrated first. Generous but violent. Persuasive, arrogant, has a strict moral code that is a mix of alien and Earthling. Genteel but vicious. Literal embodiment of what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger due to adaptive abilities. Has amassed enough of a fortune through running a (super shady) Vegas casino that they have opened their own charity to support extraterrestrials on earth. Frequently tries to hire MC to run it (look at all the resources you could have) but she considers it a conflict of interest (she’s more afraid they will entice away Techie). Has every intention of making Earth an interstellar destination for extraterrestrial tourists - regardless of what Earth’s governments think of it.

Space Pirate (Alien 4): There has to be one, okay? Child of a union between a generally terrifying species and one that inadvertently created them in a last-ditch effort to halt the conquest of their planet, which did not make for a great childhood as they were somewhat disdained by one parent’s species and feared by just about everyone else. Because of this, they have a very strong dislike/distrust of organized groups (governments in particular) but (deep down) they still believe in individuals, as they’ve found several of their life who have become friends or family (or crew). Fiercely loyal to their own. Likes Earth because as an unintegrated planet, they can come and go without scrutiny (except for one measly office that sometimes harangues them). Operates in a very gray morality - stealing is okay, killing in self-defense (even proactively) is okay, doing what you have to survive is okay (though they try to be one to make that decision before their crew), but some things just aren’t. Values independence and freedom over all else. Does not get along with Alien 1 at all because of the collective-thought aspect.

Doesn’t experience time in a linear fashion which makes them super hard to keep track of.

Myth bases - various types of dragons, mermaids, selkies, etc

A neon-based organism that is colorless and a low-energy loner, and returning them to their home would require a massive amount of voltage, which when applied totally alters them.

A sodium-based organism to whom water is toxic, making it a massive time crunch to get them to a desert location

A mercury-based parasitic organism that has found it can ‘merge’ with humans as their skin absorbs it, giving them a mobile vessel that blends in, except ultimately their toxicity kills their host and they have to find another.

Starkillers! Check it out. Iron-based organisms born from the death of massive stars (creating iron takes more energy than is released by the fusion, so stars that make iron essentially cannibalize themselves) - they are subsequently feared by default by most species that recognize the power inherent to stars. They consume other entities in search of the greater energy they once had. Consuming carbon-oxygen based entities stabilizes them into steel-based organisms.

Various visitors who they haven’t figured out how best to communicate with but they’re trying!

Fire cat:  An alien lifeform that seems to be a physical, tangible manifestation of heat. It followed heroine home from work and refuses to leave. Since it likes to cuddle and has taken the shape of an Earth cat (...except for the fact it glows like a hot coal), heroine doesn’t really ask too many questions (Even though sometimes, out of the corner of her eye, she swears she sees some massive, fiery shape). She’s still not sure what it eats but it seems content. It’s even started purring on occasion. It will absolutely scorch her fingers if she pets it when it’s not in the mood, though. She keeps telling it she’s a dog person and it keeps giving her a perfect Judgey Not-Actually-A-Cat stare.

Author Roomie: Former frustrated wild child who has (sort of) settled down - with a vengeance. Only leaves the house when they have to - which, given modern conveniences, means almost never - or when they finish a book, at which point they disappear for a few days and MC never knows where they go. They actually hired one of MC’s extraterrestrial clients to act as them for book signings and the like. Was raised by their ‘aunt’ *coughcough*my ode to Aunt Beast*coughcough* who was, in fact, an extraterrestrial, which is how they know about all this. Super helpful in coming up with cover stories. Incredibly laid back about life, incredibly NOT laid back about their book plots - tends to bite MC’s head off (figuratively) around deadline time or when stuck on a particularly tricky chapter. Thoughtful, in the sense that they think things through before answering, clever. Jealous that fire cat loves heroine but won’t sit in author’s lap unless it is SUPER cold outside.

Author’s Editor: Had an absolutely hysterical panic attack when they found out their number one author’s stand-in was not from the planet Earth. Still prone to being hysterical about it if they think about it too much. Chronically weeps over their trouble child client - who is a consistent top ten bestseller, but the definition of exhaustion to work with. Ebbs and flows with author’s mood - when author is laidback, editor is stressed, when author is stressed, editor is the picture of serenity and encouragement. Totally ends up dating ET stand-in even if they have hiccups.

Author’s Aunt:  The sort of being who imparts strength on/in others simply through steadfast grace. Just a profoundly loving presence. Healer in a very literal sense, she can help most species to be well and healthy, but there is not a good way to articulate how. Very, very old and has been on Earth a very, very long time - even before the government started a program to integrate aliens, she was acting as a kind of welcomer/healer/mentor/surrogate family to stranded aliens - and the occasional hurting, angry, frustrated human child, as was the case with Author. Often beats the government to the scenes of crashes. Home is always open to anyone who finds their way there. Heroine sees her appearance differently than the author does - when asked about it, neither can really explain why or how, since AA does not perceive the world visually.

Intern: Snarky college kid who acts like an absolute slacker but it’s all a smokescreen for a pathological need to exceed expectations - they actually work super hard behind the scenes. Primary duties include yelling PHOTOSHOP on forums where people post pictures of extraterrestrials. Always seems to have energy. Acts like they are super grouchy about having to adhere to the overly rigorous NDA but is actually extremely zealous about making the world better and safer for all of its residents.

Meryl Streep has responded to criticism from Rose McGowan regarding her work with Harvey Weinstein.

In a tweet which has since been deleted, Rose said: “Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @goldenglobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real chance. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.” Rose is one of the women who accused Harvey of sexual assault.

Meryl responded with a statement sent to Huffington Post, where she explains how she was unaware of Weinstein’s misdeeds.

“It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others.

“I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.

“I don’t know where Harvey lives, nor has he ever been to my home.

I have never in my life been invited to his hotel room.”

She added that they are both “together with all the women in our business, standing in defiance of the same implacable foe: a status quo that wants so badly to return to the bad old days, the old ways where women were used, abused and refused entry into the decision-making, top levels of the industry”

The Pep commandments: how lessons learned at Bayern stymied Liverpool

Eighteen games into Pep Guardiola’s second season as manager of Bayern Munich, his side lost 4-1 at Wolfsburg. It was their first defeat of the campaign and a major surprise, and it made Guardiola stop and reconsider.

Had he been overthinking things? Had he got so carried away with his experiments in using his full-backs in possession in effect as old-fashioned wing-halves that he had forgotten the basics?

Determined he shouldn’t make the same mistake again, he wrote what he came to refer to as “the bible” on the whiteboard in his office.

It was a very short bible, containing only three key strictures.

He would deploy:

Two against four in attack

An extra man in midfield

An extra man in defence

These were very Cruyffian values, the second and third commandments echoing the line Guardiola had written in his 2001 memoir La meva gent, el meu futbol to explain the thinking of his great mentor Johan Cruyff on basic formations.

The priority, he had said, was “to fill the centre of the pitch in order to play having numerical superiority”.

There are, of course, numerous other factors that come into play when setting up a team, and there have been many occasions when Guardiola has not faced 4-3-3 with 4-4-2, but for Guardiola these three principles form the central idea.

And that, perhaps, explains the set-up against Liverpool on Sunday.

Against Liverpool’s three-man forward line, a trident he had admitted before the game that scares him, he deployed a back four. A back three had worked in the 5-0 win at the Etihad last season – and to an extent, before his own dismissal at half-time, in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final – but, despite the availability of Benjamin Mendy, who gives him the option of setting up with a back three and wing-backs, he preferred a four.

Mendy was given a certain licence to attack, but Guardiola avoided the dangers of both full-backs pushing on simultaneously by having Kyle Walker play in a more restrained way than usual, often tucking in as a de facto third centre-back.

As it turned out, with Jürgen Klopp also opting to use his full-backs in a more conservative way, bringing in Dejan Lovren and shifting Joe Gomez to right-back in place of the more obviously attacking Trent Alexander-Arnold, the battle on the flanks became much cagier than had been anticipated.

Guardiola had tried to do something similar in the first leg of the Champions League tie last season, when Ilkay Gündogan had been used in a tucked-in right-sided role, with the intention of protecting the full-back and offering City a measure of control that would prevent Liverpool generating the sort of momentum that had blown City away after half-time in the 4-3 defeat in the league at Anfield. It failed on that occasion, but just because the execution went awry does not invalidate the thinking behind it.

“If it is an open game at Anfield you don’t even have 1% of a chance. Up and down they are the best team in the world in these transitions,” Guardiola said on Sunday.

The third prong of the plan was the use of David Silva as a second striker just behind Sergio Agüero. That fitted a more general trend that has seen strike pairings begin to re-emerge as it has become apparent that central defensive pairings have forgotten how to deal with two strikers (so both have to mark rather than one marking and the other dropping off as cover) but, because Silva often dropped deep, it also put pressure on the back of Liverpool’s midfield, an area in which they can look vulnerable.

As it turned out, Jordan Henderson had a very good game, but it is difficult for a midfield three to press with full confidence when it is always having to look over its shoulder to see what is happening in the gap between it and the back four.

The game, in truth, was probably not the spectacle most were hoping for, but in applying the lessons of Wolfsburg, in going back to the basics of Cruyffism, Guardiola demonstrated a flexibility and a pragmatism he has often eschewed in the past. It might not be as much fun as the days of “Sorry guys, this is how I play” but in terms of getting results away against elite opponents, it may turn out to be more effective.
