Reading The Dark Prophecy: Chapter 23 (SPOILERS)

"So amaze! Such name! / Sssssarah with five s's is / Still two syllablessssss" THIS IS THE ONE. I saw this poem on a post once and have been waiting to reach this chapter ever since. I yearn to meet Sssssarah.

"the tiny forest of green stalks pointed toward the left-hand corridor." When in doubt, seek the counsel of the plants. How do they know which way to go? They were only just born today.

"television monitors showing--you guessed it--videos of Commodus." clap clap clap "COMMODUS COMMODES." No opportunities missed here.

"sand 'You Don't See Me'" That's a cool way of manipulating the Mist, but it takes way longer than a simple finger snap.

"but he made no attempt to hide his chest-face." Why would he? Apollo keeps bringing this up. It's normal for their species and there are no mortals around to disguise from. Blemmyae shouldn't have to hide who they are, and it is right of them not to.

"Everything is hunky-dorky." I'm sorry, hunky-dorky? Apollo.

"What are you doing?" She's picking up her chia sprouts, can't you see? She can't just leave them around to be captured by the guards.

"But here, instead of animals, the cages held people." Woah, okay, this got dark quick. "In the center of the room was a metal post with iron hooks and chains--the sort of place where one could fasten slaves for inspection before sale." Aaaand it got darker still. This was not something I expected to see in a PJO book. Okay.

"they turned my holy island of Delos into the region's biggest slave market . . . correct that situation, slaughtering twenty thousand Romans in the process. But I mean, come on. They had it coming." One of the few times I'll say Apollo's endorsement of mass murder was justified. If you defend slavery, whatever negative karma falls upon you is righteous.

"The boys tried to stand without success." How long have they been in here? "launched herself through the hole, and gracefully somersaulted" I'm gonna guess she's been here less than a day if she still has that energy. Or could it be the blessing of Artemis?

"I guessed the plight of Lester Papadopoulos was known among the Hunters." Oh right, they would know from Artemis. Again, where's Artemis through all this? Is she not allowed to contact Apollo? Is she being punished, too?

"I suspect your comrades have arrived." Wait, are we actually gonna see the Hunters today? Yippeeeeeee

"They've been on a hunger strike." Oh, that's daring of them. I wonder who they are and what their backstories are. They sound like they might be significant.

"I"m Hunter Kowalski" You... I'm not going to say anything.

"but one was a dracaena." Sssssarah!!!

"he looked like a teak warrior brought to life through the craft of Hephaestus." Teak is a tree, so, like, a wooden figurine brought to life. Like Pinocchio. "Tattooed on his right shoulder was . . . a double-bladed ax." Demigod. This one's a demigod. "stepped out slowly and gracefully" No, no, no. Whenever someone does that walk, you know they're the enemy.

"a young girl" I was starting to think Georgina would never show up! "She was large for her age--about Leo's size" That's not large. What you have right there is a giant seven year old. I'm thinking she might be the kid of a Germani. That aside, we found Festus!

Someone in this room, one of the prisoners released, is going to die. One of them definitely is. It can't be Georgina because the plot isn't setting up to hurt Jo or Emmie. It's not TD&H Jamie 'cause he isn't significant to the heroes' side. If he does die, it's not going to be an emotional death. It could be Hunter the Hunter, but a bunch of Hunters already died in The Blood of Olympus, so doing it again would risk being repetitive. Not out of the question, though. It's probably going to be one of the mysterious hunger strike boys whose names we haven't even got yet. They act like they might be brothers, and if they are, that raises their chances of death by about 200%. It's almost expected that one sibling should die whenever two are introduced, or any pair of two people, really. Castor, Bianca, Silena... I'm honestly shocked Travis Stoll went to college instead of dying. Maybe he gets special beta reader privileges. (Travis Stoll was named after one of the beta readers of the original books. It would probably be rude to kill his character.) Anyway, one or both of these two boys is going to be dead by the end of the book, mark my words.

It's funny how much more attention the minor characters from pjo get compared to every other series minor characters.

Like, people constantly talk about characters that got minimal screen-time (Page-time?), like Castor and Pollux, Michael Yew, the Stolls, Chris and I'd argue that Selina and Beckendorf could even fall into this category.

But then, take Trials of Apollo for example. I rarely see people delve into characters like Crest, Georgina, Hunter Kowalski and Meg's siblings, even though I think some of them would be fun to explore.

Of course, this has to do with the fact that Trials of Apollo just not as popular as pjo, but even within it's own circles, I usually don't see them getting discussed.

I just found at in interesting observation

thalia finally gets why Artemis checks on her every day, and makes sure shes fed. She gets why Reyna talks to her for hours on end. She gets why Hunter Kowalski makes sure she has everything she needs. why nico, out of all people, iris message her every week. why even Apollo visits her. why Annabeth writes and calls her so often. Why (when the hunters stop at camp Half blood) Mr. D is.. surprisingly nice to her and makes sure she's alright. Why Chiron tells her he's there always.

what thalia doesnt get is why she should try anymore. try living her life, feeling happy. her life. can she even call it that? she cant. not when she was used as a punching bag by her mother. not when she lost her brother and ran away. not when she remembered what happened on half blood hill. not when shes lost everything. not when she lost both of her brothers. Luke. jason. she can't call it her life when she remembers seeing people she cares about die. not when she loses some of her hunters on a failed hunting misson. not when it feels like she cant smile anymore after Jason's death. not when she cries for hours at night due to the fact she never knew her little brother. not when she knows she'll never see those blue eyes again. not when she puts on her mask to hide the pain. not when she has so much on her plate from the hunt to her personal things.

she cant call it a life.

and she really cant when shes still forced to fight for a life she doesn't think thats worth living.

Reading The Dark Prophecy: Chapter 29 (SPOILERS)

I got a glimpse of the "You villain!" and "Ssssstand assssside! . . . I will ssssswallow him whole!" on the next page and immediately thought they were talking about Apollo. My bad. It was Lityerses. Coulda been either of them at this point, though.

"'I thought you--' His welding visor fell shut, making the rest of his sentence unintelligible." Lmao

"You have to wonder about your chances in combat when even your dead friends are worried about dying." Oh yeah, I forgot Brieanna's already dead. And even he thinks they should flee? Yeesh, things are not looking up. Eh, they'll be fine.

"But I hear much talk about us and them." Jamie! We're about to die! I think we can spare a little "us and them" talk.

"Hunter Kowalski brandished her screwdriver. 'Not likely.'" Death by screwdriver.

"Commodus won't leave this net alive." I hope he doesn't die in this book. Shouldn't the final battle in the final book have all three Triumvirate members there? I know it's called The Tower of Nero, but everyone should be there, right?

"They have ìgboyà." Yoruba for courage/bravery. "I would have to purchase some ìgboyà as soon as possible." Yeah, Apollo does need a little ìgboyà to strengthen his bones.

"the Hunters of Artemis had to clean the cow pens" Maybe Emmie and Jo are still salty about having to leave the Hunters.

"brothers named Deacon and Stan" I'm sorry, Stan? Ok. "IV drips of nectar." First of all. Do we know their godly parents? Second of all. I didn't know you could inject nectar directly into your blood. Isn't that supposed to be food? I don't see anyone ingesting soup via bloodstream.

"a few dozen mortal mercenaries, about the same number of demigods from the Imperial Household, a few hundred assorted cynocephali and other monsters, plus the usual hordes of blemmyae" *toaster oven dings* How many Hunters do we have?

"Leo, stop." Let him cope, Calypso! Y'all're about to die. Let him let off some steam, both figuratively and maybe literally.

"Also I should mention the giant bronze dragon in the corner" Oh, yeah. So maybe things aren't as bleak as they seem.

"what about your magic? Has it returned?" "This morning, I moved a coffee cup across the counter." clap clap clap

"I would have made popcorn and watched the bloodbath from a distance on Mount Olympus, or simply caught the highlight reel later." I wonder if that was supposed to sound as demented as it did. "But as Lester I felt obliged to defend these people" Is it because he's Lester or because he's seeing this stuff happen firsthand and in the middle of the fray? If it's because he's Lester, then once he regains his powers, will he no longer feel these things?

"not-so-little Georgina" I reiterate: are we sure she's not half Germani? Apollo could've gotten with a Germani person and had a kid. 'Cause Georgina's giant.

"bounce it off his nonexistent head." As a ghost, do you not have all your body parts if you died without them? Like, you'd think that he'd have his head reattached once he became a spirit, but no. Maybe only if they're in the Underworld. But he'd at least, like, carry his head around or keep it in his inventory or something, no? Guess not.

"Was it payback?" I hadn't even considered that. I highly doubt it. Apollo's type of payback is much more obvious than that. *eyes Halcyon Green*

I've just thought of the stupidest and most cursed/cringe RainWorld crossover so now you have to be subjected to it too:

Penguins of Madagascar

Small, "cute and cuddly" creatures which are surprisingly deadly, can't run very fast but move around at surprisingly high speeds by sliding on their bellies, rolling, and other absurd acrobatics. This describes the Penguins, but it also describes slugcats.

Featuring:

Hunter - Skipper. the cynical veteran leader of the small tribe of slugcats.

Survivor - Kowalski. The smart one, supposedly. Analyst and planner, but his plans are all scribbles on a little board the group somehow obtained, because he can't read and every time the tribe needs something read they have to beg / bribe an iterator to help them.

Monk - Private. The baby of the group, not the best at combat and unsure of his role but a total sweetheart.

Artificer - Rico. The, uhh, weapons expert. Pyromaniac, prefers to solve any and all problems with violence. Has the ability to regurgitate live explosives at any time, or more disturbingly, shove an entire spear halfway down her throat and turn it into an explosive spear. (yeah, yeah, Rico can cough up just about any item, not just explosives, which would technically fit Gourmand better but Kaboom? Yes Artie, Kaboom.)
