earth 42! miles morales as a streamer headcanons

warnings: none but fluff

a/n: aight had to whip this out of the drafts since my LAST miles post got a community label. + i wasn’t too proud of it anyways so i just took it down. </3 i’ll probably put it back up once i try to figure out what’s wrong w it though.

miles would most definitely be a gaming and music reaction streamer. he would always be up to date with the newest games but let brent faiyaz drop a new album or something, and he gets RIGHT on it!

you would expect majority of his audience to be girls because of his good looks and nice personality, however he seems to be more appealing to guys since he rages on the games he plays quite a lot. (he is not very fond of mercy players on overwatch and hates winston mains with a passion.)

he has a pretty big fanbase, ranging from around 800k-1M followers on twitch and 500k subscribers on his twitch highlights channel. and the only reason why his following got this huge in only a year’s span is because he went viral on tiktok because of him raging at a game and then his sound became a trend. now most audios on tiktok are from his streams, and honestly he finds it hilarious.

now miles is really private about his life outside of streaming. he’ll answer the basic questions about his age, his race/ethnicity, how many siblings he has and etc. but anything about his relationship status or anything was kept strictly confidential.

that was until one day you walked in his room while streaming. it was a normal stream, he was just talking to chat and answering questions per usual. you had brought him some food since he had since you some money via cash app to do so. you didn’t know he was streaming so you just came and hugged him, even giving him a kiss, and then handed him his food. you didn’t even pay attention to the stream and kept going with your business. he had got so caught up in the moment he hadn’t realized that he was still streaming and his chat was going crazy.

he was shocked to say at the least but he wasn’t mad at you or anything. he was more mad at his chat for trying to spit game at you even though they had saw the whole ordeal. once you were informed that you were dating the miles morales, your social medias, that were once very private, started blowing up with notifications asking you about your relationship with miles.

miles took this opportunity to properly introduce you on his instagram story. about two weeks after the situation happened, he posted a picture with you and him for your 6th month anniversary. the caption saying, “happy 6th month anniversary to my beautiful girlfriend. te amo tanto. <3 @[yourusername]”

and so the news was out. from this point forward, you started to pop up in the streams a little more often and you started to grow this special little friendship with his fanbase. you once just came into his room because you wanted a hug and the entire chat was filled with “AWWW!!! YOU GUYS ARE SO CUTE!!” and “mbn.. 😔💔”s. now not EVERYONE was happy with this situation and some people spread hate comments here and there but because of the overwhelming support of your relationship, miles barely noticed it. the only thing he had on his mind was you and his career.

NICE my post got two notes anyways here's my thoughts on the pines fam handling over/understimulation as a neurodivergent and mentally ill family in my own personal canon

putting this under a readmore again because uhhh as always with my headcanons there's a lot and it'll probably be annoying to scroll thru over and over

if anyone else has any thoughts about this feel free 2 add onto this post <3 <3 <3 would love to hear it!!!!! ^_^

starting off with mabel, obviously she CRAVES stimulation so so badly and is constantly looking for something new to do, to the point where her default state is Slightly Overstimulated. i figure she also struggles with emotional dysregulation (even worse because mabel is literally just a kid and isnt equipped to handle heightened emotions with grace just yet sdfjjds) and she absolutely canNOT be understimulated or else she will explode the ENTIRE state of oregon. however a couple too many unpleasant sounds or textures or tastes at once and her entire day is ruined- well, it's not really, but it sure feels like it at the time. she starts angry crying and hitting things and only really calms down when she is completely separated from whatever was upsetting her or vice versa (her threshold for the amount of overstimulation she can handle before snapping probably lowers Significantly post-weirdmageddon), having waddles with her usually cheers her up a lot quicker though<3

ford is actually similar to her in a few aspects here, he too is running as far away from understimulation as possible, always sitting in his room tinkering with some new invention or running around catching some new creature to occupy himself. (he wasn't always like this! as a kid, between him and stan he was definitely and obviously the more docile one. but as an adult he feels the need to seek stimulation moreso because he needs to distract himself from his constant stream of often unpleasant thoughts) this has the unpleasant side effect of isolating himself from the people around him, but it's not intentional, it's just that busying himself with projects and studying the supernatural is his Default Solution to having nothing to do. it's comfortable for him. he also has the Thing where if he isn't explicitly invited to join someone, he doesn't feel comfortable doing so, even if he really wants to.

dipper and stan are completely different from mabel and ford in that they just. nobody ever told them that understimulation is not the default state of existing for everyone else??? so they just??? Put up with it regularly???? dipper stims frequently without realizing to combat this- clicking/chewing on pens over and over and pacing his room for example, but more often than not it isn't Quite Enough and he doesn't know Why. this is also why dipper's anxiety is So bad- sitting around without making an effort to distract himself from his many thoughts will often get him catastrophizing within minutes (him and ford probably bond over having Too Much Thought Head Full). in fact, if he didn't have mabel around to remind him to have fun and use his time wisely instead of getting stuck inside his own head for hours on end he would probably be a very different and much less emotionally stable person than he is in the show jsdjfjsda

stan doesn't stim very much except when he's genuinely scared or upset, in which case he is cracking his knuckles, gripping onto the closest fabric so hard it almost tears, pulling off his cuticles, picking at scabs etc etc (you can imagine how much he fucked up his skin in the days following both instances of him losing ford). he probably had very different habits when he was a kid though- because come on. stan was totally the poster child for audhd, constantly running around and being loud to satisfy his lil brain. however within a few years certain nd behaviors stop being "cute" to others and instead start attracting a shit ton of ridicule so now his only stims are ones which are inconspicuous and could be passed off as stress habits instead of being a clear sign of neurodivergence- plus he probably ended up developing shittier coping mechanisms while running around for 10 years after getting kicked out. but it's not like he can smoke or drink all the time with the kids (wendy and soos included) around though so his options are kinda limited

My personal interpretation of the Ghost Language/Ghost Speak headcanon-trope, an incomprehensible comprehensive summary.

As seems to be a common theme with my headcanons, this is one of those I came up with shortly after watching the show thinking it was somewhat unique, only to discover an idea like this has existed in the fandom for a while when I made a tumblr blog. It’s also one of the headcanons I have that, despite already existing within the fandom, do not fully align with accepted fanon. So, uh, here’s a post I guess. My idea of ‘Ghost Language’ is less of an established language and more of a… magical form of communication?? Ghost Language - or Ghost Speak, as I will call it from now on - is a very abstract form of sharing information as it’s less about speaking words and more about beaming your emotions and memories directly into someone’s head. It comes from the ghost’s core (which in my interpretation is pretty much the soul and every ghost has one, not just those that developed elemental powers.), has no traditional language structure and is a natural ability of every ghost. It’s impossible to be replicated by humans and other non-ghostly entities and the way it sounds varies from spirit to spirit, however it is almost always unpleasant to human ears. If you are a ghost with a more developed core (meaning you either have an elemental core or powers unique to you) your Ghost Speak will be overlayed with sensations (or sounds) associated with whatever the hell is going on with your core. Ghost Speak is a form of revealing information directly from your core and as such is incredibly personal. (Literally speaking from your soul lol) Basically if you're trying to share any kind of information in ghost speak, like for example you want to tell a friend you're going home, you'd be showing them parts of the memories and emotions associated with home (and the idea of returning there) stored in your core. Which means that, instead of the simple announcement that you're returning home, you reveal the general idea of what/where your home is, who shares it with you, how you feel about the place and the people you live with and partially what the journey home means to you.

You cannot lie and you have basically no way of obscuring information, since you are momentarily opening your core to another person. Which is incredibly fucking dangerous if you're speaking to someone who you really don't want knowing anything about your home life. It's just an open stream of very personal information and (fully formed) ghosts only use it to communicate very rarely and that is only in the circumstances of complete unconditional trust. I specify fully formed because newly formed weak spirits that are confined to following a specific set of mannerisms and are incapable of verbal communication rely on ghost speak to call (beg) for help, usually with a recounting of their death, hence the moaning and wailing and a plethora of other ‘creepy’ noises. Since Ghost Speak comes as a natural ability, many weaker spirits won’t even realize they are using it in their attempts to communicate. ANYWAY, I’m too tired and my head is swimming from all this text so I’ll cut it short here, but feel free to ask if you got any questions? I realize I haven’t really explained it that well, I’m not a writer and also written word is just generally painful for me to look at so I’ve likely made a few errors XD Sorry ‘bout that! Palestine Charity Stream

Through this upcoming Tuesday Wednesday, to celebrate DanganWLWeek and make a small difference in the current humanitarian crisis, I'll be hosting a fundraiser in support of the Palestine Children's Relief Fund! The fundraiser is up and running right now, so you can donate it to it whenever you please - the earlier, the better! i’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and i want to hear someone from SPHS’s thoughts.

i know you’ve noticed the “tiktok” fan base- the ones that only watch clips of the show and then say they’re fans. i read one of your posts talking about these types of fans and making blatantly incorrect headcanons. that’s something that bugs me, but another thing that bugs me is the fact i do not believe south park is tiktokable. i’ll use family guy as a comparison for my points.

first of all, compared to family guy, the humor is different, pretty much everything they explained in the cartoon wars two parter explains what i mean, m&t are not fans of interchangeable jokes and are able to give characters emotional progression throughout the episode. that’s one huge factor, i hope you get what i’m trying to imply with that. m&t are passionate about their story telling and it pays off in their episodes. i know not EVERY SINGLE joke follows this, but there are jokes made better by understanding the characters and the circumstance of the episode. the episodes work best in their entirety. (that was difficult to explain so i fear it can be misinterpreted easily)

the characters are another thing i want to mention. i watched the episode TSST with two friends awhile ago, one of which who had never seen an episode and didn’t understand cartmans character. she kept asking questions about him, or said how weird his hitler obsession was. the other friend hadn’t finished south park and said he hated cartmans character and it’s hes one of the bad pieces of the show. i believe even if you don’t like cartman as a personal preference thing, you should at least appreciate him as a character and his placement, it’s hard to understand him (despite us watching an episode that really dives into him, they still didn’t know much about him before). with family guy, one episode is enough to grasp the character, hell, even a single scene is i’d say, while m&t are very good at developing and fleshing out character personalities over time. it’s why they can pull off making sad episodes (like kenny dies and assburgers), heartwarming episodes (like tweek x craig and even bits of episodes like in raisins) all while still being a comedy show. they understand how to make the characters react in a way that can make you feel something while maintaining a good amount of jokes in the episode.

i dont know, theres more i could add but i’m just writing whatever comes to mind first so it might make no sense or it might be wrong. also, i’m by no means an old fan. i’ve rewatched the series quite a few times, watched commentaries, researched through wiki pages and am constantly trying to better my knowledge of the show, but i know i’m not quite there yet and could just be making a mistake GAHAH

No anon, I actually totally get this and agree 100%. SP as a show is not something that works well with out of context clips (and even then, the ones that do work are usually from very early in an episode before the plot fully gets established and stakes as drawn). Until pre s18 when they started soft continuity (and then s19-21s full continuity, after that is a whole other discussion entirely), the shows syndicated nature did make it easier to hop into any episode and watch it in its entirety and enjoy it without much prior knowledge of the show or it's characters. However, even then, you really needed to watch the *whole* episode to get the big picture of it's message.

And I get it, SP full length episodes are not as accessible as they once were. People these days don't know how or aren't willing to pirate things if they don't have the streaming service SP is hosted on, and beyond that, south park used to be free to watch on their website. Like, that's how I ended up catching up on the show when I finally decided to take it all in other than a handful of episodes and scenes I'd seen during my childhood back in 2013. It was all entirely available (save for Super Best Friends, 200 and 201, which I had to go track down on other websites) for free, with ads unless you used an ad blocker, right at your fingertips. And that's how M+T wanted SP to be consumed, because they explicitly noted that they didn't care about making money on streamed episodes, they cared about getting their show out there. (I will have to go find that interview, I know it's somewhere).

But still, regardless of that, you're right. SP is not something that you can consume short form as a brief tiktok video, and that's why I think we have newer fans with such big gaps in knowledge that seem like they would be easy to fill in. It's not that they're being willfully ignorant, they're just being fed a very piecemeal version of the show through social media, which is how we get people thinking Pip is a he//llpa//rk OC (augh!!! dont get me started) instead of realizing this dude was actually in the fucking show, or headcanons that are very easy to contradict with canon itself by watching like 3 episodes. That's not me knocking HCs btw, go wild and do whatever you want, but these people don't even know it's ooc, and that's a little troublesome. I've made some outlandish character decisions in the past but I at least KNEW they were not evidence based.

What that means for the fandom down the road I don't know, and its made a lot of discussion and analysis more shallow-- it's so hard outside of my SPHS friend group to find good breakdowns these days. I'm hoping maybe something will change, but who knows.

Oh hi. i dont even know where to begin, i've been really out of the loop. But i have recommendations. This is going to be long

DreamSMP

Well, the dsmp has gone to shit for many reasons.

But if you do get into dsmp, blueberrytv on youtube is your best friend, they cut streams down to more digestible episodes so you can follow the story along. Yes it's long. Dear god it's long. Also @relaxxattack has a carrd that updated until fairly recently, i also recommended it many times.

The story was (i never thought i'd have to speak in past tense about it, the fucker seemed to drag through for decades in just 2 years) told through livestreams, quite a few of are lost forever because twitch deletes vods after 2 weeks and no one bothered to back them up. Also ignore everything after the disc war finale except quackity (and tales of the smp)

You can test the waters by watching Wilbur's L'manburg war video to see if you like the vibes. I usually recommend this, though it's not the earliest point in the story. (that would be tommy's disc war, which is also VERY important, but people tend to find him annoying at first, esp. 2020 tommy like jesus christ he was a different beast. Definietly watch it after the L'manburg independence, things will click.)

Sad-ist's animatics are classics that helped shape the story as it was being written. Watch them as you progress through.

Hermitcraft + Adjacent*

*as far as fandom/content creator overlap goes

1. Hermitcraft is more gameplay heavy. If you don't enjoy minecraft you're not gonna like it, but it's pretty straight forward. You find a youtuber and follow their series on youtube. People usually recommend Grian, GoodTimesWithScar, and Mumbo for beginners, (they are the most popular ones) and then you can branch out from there. Hermitcraft recap is a godsent if you want to know what's going on everywhere.

I personally loved season 8, it's also the shortest and the most lore-heavy. Really gives you a taste of what the series is like at its best.

2. The life series! (Third life, Last Life, Double life, Limited Life) again, find any participant want, then branch out if you want to. Lore is easy to find here, people were under pressure to make up stuff quickly because the series is short, and the result is funny, creative, and so so tragic.

3. People watch EvoSMP for grian, pearl and martyn lore but it really doesn't matter to anything that's going on right now. It's a good series, but Watcher (basically evil angel Grian) headcanons are far detached from it nowdays despite originating from it.

4. Yandere highschool! Do not watch Yandere highschool. No detail is worth it. Use adblock if you force yourself through it, no money for the creator he's an asshat and the other members apparently no longer talk to him.

QSMP

Since the last post, Quackity started the QSMP, in which spanish and english speaking youtubers play on the same server. It has roleplay but it's looser and less grimdark than the dsmp thankfully. They are on an island and they adopted little eggs that walk around and act all cute. It's streamed on twitch. Pick a person and look up their vods, if you're interested. Slimecicle is recommended to start with, and some spanish creators use english subtitles/translation mods. There aren't comprehensive sources to find every vod/video yet, since the server isn't that old.

EmpiresSMP

Start from participants' youtube channels, can't tall you more. I never got into it, not my thing. However, a lot of people left guides in the notes!

Today, Tomorrow and Forever

Summary: Angel Elvis went through Hell when being falsely accused of betraying God. Eventually found true love with LAPD narcotics officer B.B. King.

Author’s Notes: Guess I might as well take that leap of faith. What started out as jotting down headcanons or a few ideas turned into a 7000+ words WIP. Well it is my first fan fic ever, and might also be my last. I was going to post it on AOx3 but have no patience to wait until my account request goes through. Since not many people are posting m/m fiction in the Elvis fandom at Tumblr I thought I might as well put this out. Or maybe I just wanted some indication all that time I spent writing this weekend was not completely wasted.

Chapter 1 Hell's Angel

Pairing: incubi x Elvis Presley (m/m), succubi x Elvis Presley (f/m)

Word count: 2.5k

Warning: 18+, Gang rape, Physical abuse, Drugging, Colonel Parker

Elvis was the choir leader in the angel choir in Heaven. He was young and carefree, living with his parents, Gladys and Vernon. His buddies included Jerry, George, Charlie, Red and Sonny. One day he accidentally walked into Red and Sonny's secret devil worshipping ritual. He was shocked and couldn't believe the two of them were betraying God and plotting to aid the Devil in overtaking Heaven. Red and Sonny tried to convince him to join them in their espionage, Elvis refused and wanted to warn the other angels. That was when he was hit hard on the head by Red and passed out. Red and Sonny then tied him up and called others to come over. They claimed Elvis was a spy from Hell and was captured by them. As evidence, the two provided a map of Heaven in demon language, supposedly seized from Elvis when they caught him.

When Elvis woke up, he was in the middle of a large stadium with tens of thousands of angels watching him being put on a public trial. There was a panel of archangels acting as judges. God was not personally present, but they all knew he was presiding over the proceedings behind the scenes somewhere. Elvis tried to defend himself by telling the truth, swearing his loyalty to God. However, the evidence was against him. The angel guards raided his home and were able to find multiple Devil worshipping emblems and demonic potions. They even caught a demon who confessed he was the messenger through whom Elvis was transmitting information to the Devil. Red and Sonny both testified against him. Although Jerry and Charlie tried to defend him, it simply wasn't enough, and the masses of angels turned against Elvis. They screamed angrily: "Destroy this traitor!" "Banish him to Hell!". At that point Elvis knew deep inside that he had no chance of clearing himself, he pleaded with the judges to spare his parents and let him bare all the punishment. Suddenly the thunderous voice of God was heard resounding over the stadium: "Elvis, I'm so disappointed in you! He licked his cracked lips and murmured "water...", then he tried to move but realized that he was in restraints again. Except this time he had lost his angel robe, so he was naked as the day he was born. With throbbing in his head, he regarded his surroundings and found that he was lying flat on a steel-plated counter in the middle of a cave. His hands were chained to the walls on each side of him, he could minimally wiggle the arms but really there was not much give to do anything else. There was a leather collar around his neck which was secured to the steel plate beneath him. Similarly his waist was encircled by a broad leather belt which strapped him down without fail. His entrapment was complete with ropes and chains which kept his legs bent at the knees and spread widely apart. His wings were in a spread position as well but they were paralyzed, any attempt to move them sent unbearable shooting pain through his entire body.

Suddenly one hand ran through the feathers in his left wing, he shivered a little due to the ultra-sensitivity he seemed to be having currently all over. A voice sounded which seemed familiar, but he couldn't place where he had heard it before: "My boy, look at you! Elvis mulled over the title in his mind, but remained completely fuzzy about his past. The Colonel brought a tantalizing glass of water above his mouth and offered to him. "Want a drink? This is very precious down here!" Elvis's Adam's Apple moved up and down with difficulty, his throat was so dry he could barely form a sentence. He closed his eyes, opened his mouth longingly, knowing full well that he was accepting hydration from a demon in Hell. Lukewarm water started pouring steadily into his mouth, he gulped it down, ended up choking slightly before the stream stopped.

After a few minutes, Elvis opened his eyes and spoke for the first time: "Thank you, sir. But why am I here and why am I tied up?". Parker's little demon eyes lit up: "Why, this is where you belong! Look where following God got you, damaged and abandoned! He has imprisoned your family! The dark lord had been mistreated by God the same way in the past and was also tossed out of Heaven, that's why he takes pity in you and is taking you under his protective black wings! Come on, tell us the secret of the Heavenly defense system and we will help you free your Mama and Daddy!" Elvis bit his bottom lip: "And what if I don't?" The grin on Parker's face froze up, his facial muscles spasmed for a second, then slowly morphed into a twisted smile: "My boy, you know the smart choice here... Or else we have ways to convince you." He placed a hand on Elvis' soft lower belly, stroking it a few times, causing a nervous twitch there. The blue-eyed boy took a deep breath, then a very determined look came over his face: "No! I will never follow the Devil! I'll find a way to clear my name before God and save my parents myself!" For a moment the Colonel seemed stunned by this open defiance, but quickly he squeezed a few words from between his teeth: "My boy, that's foolish! It's obvious that you need a few lessons before you can start to think clearly." A loud snap was then heard across the cave, Elvis' brain then registered that it was the sound of his right ankle bone cracking apart as Parker took a forceful swing at it with his cane. His anguished cry was accompanied with a failed attempt to withdraw his right ankle by instinct. Then the cold reality set in that he was in a very exposed and vulnerable position in a torture chamber in Hell. Parker smirked and spoke nonchalantly: "Just a small taste of what's to come, let me know when you change your mind. You know I always take good care of you my boy..." He slowly stroked Elvis' cheek one time, then left whistling a happy tune.

A moment later, a group of at least 7 or 8 demons crowded into the chamber. Most were males, there were two females, all of them buck naked. Bad Batch/Arcane ‘Left Behind’ Scene Comparison Part 1/2

So this is gonna be a long post but I’ll split into 2 parts.

I’m gonna do a scene comparison between 2 shows that have similar characters. I will be comparing Bad Batch’s Omega with Arcane’s Powder. Both girls are incredibly similar in both age and their characters.

Warnings—not a fic, scene comparison, 2 parts (part 1 of 2), contains spoilers for Bad Batch, Arcane, mention/talk of mental illness and trauma, headcanons, bad screen caps (cuz idk how and most streaming services don’t let you screenshot 😕), lemme know if I need to add more

*Everyone experiences mental illness differently. Any and all talk of mental illness is from my own perspective of being diagnosed with anxiety, depression, OCD and most recently psychotic depression.*

I’ll start by listing the similarities between both girls first. I headcanon Omega to be 11 in S1 of BB and 12 in S2 (but I will use 11 since only S1 is out as of writing this—just like Arcane having only 1 season as of writing this as well). I headcanon Powder to be around 9 (9-10), which is pretty close. Also both girls are extremely attached to the people/person they depend on. Omega is dependent on Hunter and CF99 and Powder is dependent on Vi, her older sister and their adopted dad Vander. They both also have a fear of being left behind by said loved ones (which is the scene/trope I will be analyzing). They both also are the inexperienced, youngest members of their respective groups, eager to prove themselves.

I’ve talked about this before but I’d like to mention that both girls aren’t good at what they love to do and both also have gifts/talents that go unused. Omega is great at strategy (ep10), but is only shown to use her skills in that episode. While in ep1, when Omega shot Crosshair’s blaster out of his hand, she’s shown to not be a good shot (ep6) having hit the target 3/12 times and has to practice to get good. By contrast, Powder’s a great shot, outshooting the brother that bullies her, but isn’t given a weapon because of her age and location. Powder is incredibly smart and prefers to make homemade bombs, though they never work (until the explosion in ep3). By ep4, Powder, now known as Jinx, has perfected her bombs/grenades and they explode without fail.

Important to note: Arcane is TV-14, which means content may not be suitable for anyone younger than 14 and Bad Batch is TV-PG, which means content is for 7yrs and up. HOWEVER! I believe the TV-14 rating for Arcane is for the depiction of Shimmer (drugs/drug abuse), the sex scene in ep5, the bathroom scene with Mel’s mom in ep8, and gun violence. I believe any depictions of intense emotions/emotional distress would’ve been fine to show in a show like Bad Batch, because TCW (BB’s predecessor) has established that it has crossed the line for a kids show a few times (Umbara arc, spider-Maul, inhibitor chip arc).

Part 1/2

The scene: Being left behind

The shows: Bad Batch/Arcane

The characters: Omega/Powder

1–Unaware: Both girls are unaware they are not accompanying the group. Omega gets her electrobow set and tells Hunter she is ready when he is. Powder gathers what she needs (her bombs/hexcrystals) and stands at the ready.

2–The First No/Rejection: Hunter tells Omega ‘not this time’ and to stay behind. He is stern because he’s firm about his decision from the beginning. Vi is a bit different in that she doesn’t want to tell Powder no, but does so anyways for her sister’s safety. Her facial expression isn’t like Hunter’s at all. She appears almost sad compared to Hunter’s serious look.

3–First Argument: Omega is confused and tells Hunter that she is part of the squad, meaning she should go too. Omega is confused at first before she switches to a pleading look in the 2nd panel. Powder is also confused, merely asking ‘What?’, as if she didn’t hear Vi right. Powder looks to be more hurt in the 2nd panel compared to begging to go with—which will come later.

4–2nd Argument: Hunter tells Omega that following orders shouldn’t be a problem because she is a member of the squad. Omega looks at Hunter with a slightly more intense pleading look, clearly begging to go with. There’s more of a back and forth between Powder and Vi. Vi insists it’s too dangerous, while Powder argues that family stick together and now Powder looks at Vi with more of a pleading look than one of hurt or confusion.

5–I Know, But…: Both older parentified figures agree/understand their younger counterpart’s argument, but they insist for the younger one’s protection. Here’s a better shot of Hunter looking at Omega and Vi looking at Powder while saying ‘I know what I said’.

6–Insisting: Mostly shown by a look shared between Omega and Hunter, Hunter insists she stay behind while she insists to go, both with the look in their eyes. Powder insists she can help along with an intense pleading look in the 2nd panel.

7–Final No: Hunter eventually asks Omega if she understands and acknowledges her as a soldier. That’s important because it reaffirms to the girl that she is one of the squad, despite not being able to go. That’s completely different from Vi’s immediate, slightly harsh but true ‘You’re not ready’.

8–Reaction: Here’s where the most obvious difference is in this scene. Both girls’ reactions are entirely different to being told no. Perhaps it’s because how the ‘no’ was put (Hunter wasn’t as harsh as Vi). Regardless, Omega’s reaction to being told no by Hunter is an eyeroll (such a Boba thing to do honestly) and a small groan with it. Powder, on the other hand is crushed. Powder goes through these micro-expressions that are really beautiful. First she is surprised, then she’s crushed by Vi’s words gasping a bit before she looks confused and disbelieved. It’s interesting because during this time, she looks away, as if trying to figure out why before looking back at Vi, as if to ask if what she said was true.

9–Acknowledgement: Omega looks at Hunter before finally replying like a soldier, though it’s clearly half-hearted and she’s not happy about it, almost resigned. Vi tells Powder that she is all the older girl has left and that she cannot lose her before gently caressing Powder’s face. Powder looks at Vi sadly before shutting her eyes, accepting to stay behind before looking away, clearly upset and sad, completely different from Omega’s disappointment.

10–Orders: This one’s a bit out of order from the rest of the Bad Batch stills. Hunter gives Omega specific instructions to stay close to Cid and not to leave before asking if she understands. In Bad Batch, this occurs between #6/7 but in Arcane, this part occurs at the end of the scene. Vi gives Powder a flare and tells her to run if Enforcers come for her. Vi tells Powder to light the flare and she will find her, promising the younger girl.

After doing this comparison, it’s honestly surprising how different the same scene can be, despite having similar characters. It’s a little obvious how much more intense Powder’s emotions are conveyed compared to Omega’s. I think it’s because Omega is used staying behind/being left (Nala Se being so protective of her and all), so when Hunter tells her to stay behind as well, Omega is more disappointed/frustrated than upset like Powder. Because of her separation anxiety, Powder doesn’t seem to have had many moments where the two are separated (by Vi no less). I HC that both Vi and Powder were told to stay behind right before the attempted Zaunite rebellion on the bridge and then their parents were killed—that’s why Powder spiraled in her room in ep3 (the last time Powder had to stay behind=loved ones died). I feel like being separated/told to stay behind didn’t really happen for Powder (even if it should’ve) unless Vi thought it was truly life-or-death.

The different reactions can also be attributed to the relationships between the younger girls and their parentified caregivers. While Omega has stated that Hunter and the others are ‘her brothers’, I’d argue that she has a more father-daughter relationship with the Batch (aside from Wrecker who is more fun older brother/uncle), despite her never referring to Hunter as ‘dad’. I believe however, she thinks of Hunter as a dad. The clones refer to themselves as ‘brothers’ so it makes sense Omega would too, being surrounded by clones growing up on Kamino. When Hunter asks if she has parents in ep1, Omega is confused. I don’t think she knows what parents are and so, refers to Hunter and the Batch as the closest thing to family a clone has: ‘brothers’. While they do have an adoptive father in Vander, Vi has taken on the role of parent to Powder, being the only older female figure in her life. Honestly I see their relationship a lot like Nani and Lilo’s from Lilo and Stitch, though even Lilo admits that she likes Nani better as a sister than a mom. While they still fought like siblings, Powder looks up to Vi and desperately wants her approval.

Given how sheltered and protected Omega grew up, I was a bit surprised by how mature and capable she seemed to be (which I think lead to a lack in character development), especially given that one of her first new experiences with a different world was a hostile/aggressive interaction with a wild animal.

So I guess that’s it for this part. I tried to line everything up as best I could, but the scene is a bit longer in Arcane than in Bad Batch. I’m going to do Omega and Powder and how they handle being left behind for a part 2.

The magic of 3rd Life, or why such a simple hardcore miniseries works as well as it does

For a series which only lasted for eight sessions, 3rd Life has had a profound impact on the MCYT fandom. While it did go comparatively unnoticed on Twitter (as is consistent with YouTube-based Minecraft content as a whole, admittedly), Tumblr and other platforms have fallen in love with this series, and it’s become a vector for many fans to familiarise themselves with Hermitcraft and Empires SMP as well. But at its core, 3rd Life is a simple vanilla survival series with a gimmick. What about it resonates so much with so many people?

I would argue that its simplicity, its small cast, its vanilla gameplay “with a twist” is certainly part of it. It’s an easy series to consume, with many POVs totalling four hours or less, and it doesn’t require any prior knowledge of any of the members. Its mechanics are easy to understand. As a standalone, it functions perfectly – it’s immersive and can be followed easily by anyone, regardless of any prior knowledge they may or may not have. However, these factors alone don’t quite encompass what makes 3rd Life so special. Its true charm point lies in the format of the series, and how well it utilises improv.

[more below the cut; this is a fairly long post about 3rd/Last Life meta and my love of its improv. I'm mostly talking about 3rd Life here as it's a completed series, but this most definitely does apply to Last Life as well]

3rd Life is an entirely improv-based series. Whilst members may have a brief concept of the direction they’d like to take their series in – how heavily they want to roleplay, for example – the actual content of each session is fully improvised. Each episode is recorded in one three-hour block, and members are not allowed to play on the server outside of the allotted time other than specifically to finish builds. This time constraint prevents any planning from going into each episode, and interactions between players are completely spontaneous. Players simply run around the map looking for others to interact with (which is significantly easier with the limited world border) and chat about various events on the server, form alliances or deals, etc.

By definition, this almost completely negates the possibility of bad writing. Each player’s reaction to any server event is spontaneous, a legitimate reaction; they aren’t trying to play any specific roles or shoehorn in any specific events (with the exception of the Red King/Hand of the King roles, who were still completely improvising). Even the finale – a distinctly heart-wrenching and tragic scene – was improvised without Grian or Scar attempting to tell any specific story. According to Martyn, they weren’t roleplaying, they didn’t have any aims with that scene. It just happened to turn out in the way that it did, and they were legitimately sorry to one another. The server progressed in this natural way, and every person’s perspective tells a completely different story. It’s hard to identify any specific heroes or villains – fans of the Dream SMP can surely relate to this feeling, but I would argue that 3rd Life takes this one step further. 3rd Life is a tragedy from all perspectives, a tragedy which tells one cohesive story in its entirety before stopping as abruptly as it began.

3rd Life hinges entirely on its interactions between its members. Whilst solo content does exist – base building, for example – the majority of each session is spent interacting with others. 3rd Life is carried by its dialogue; nothing else drives the story, and yet many episodes are between 30 minutes and an hour long. It’s that dialogue-heavy. Members of the server have expressed trouble with even editing their videos because there is so much key dialogue that they don’t want to cut. People don’t watch 3rd Life for the actual gameplay, at all – there’s so little of it! They watch it for how each member interacts with the people around them. This is something not found in any other SMP I’ve encountered. SMPs livestreamed on Twitch have plenty of downtime, and people will happily watch streams on that SMP no matter what’s occurring on the server; people often watch them for their interest in specific members. Other currently popular YouTube SMPs, namely Hermitcraft and Empires, are well-balanced between solo content and interactions, and all server content hinges on the members’ various skills like building and redstone. 3rd Life is, to my knowledge, the only SMP which does not rely on building or redstone skills (what’s the point, when they’ll be dead the next week?), it doesn’t rely on the creator doing solo work talking to their chat, it doesn’t rely on planned roleplay. People legitimately just want to hear various members talking to each other. It’s a fascinatingly unique series in this regard. This dialogue-heavy aspect of 3rd Life ties back to my earlier point about 3rd Life feeling like a completely different series from all perspectives; with all of this dialogue being conveyed through proximity chat, so many events are entirely left out of other POVs, or presented in very different lights.

The pure improv format also helps significantly with worldbuilding, whilst also leaving plenty to the imagination. MCYT fandoms always require a significant amount of imagination to become invested in them, let alone make fan content of them, and 3rd Life is no exception to this. As discussed in this post, which was incidentally the inspiration for me to write this one, 3rdLife is full of lines which flesh out the series, which illustrate what happened better than can be shown in Minecraft. These lines are improvised on the spot, and are often complete throwaway lines in the creators’ eyes. In the fans’ eyes, they make 3rd Life feel alive, they provide plenty of material on which to base headcanons. Again, this isn’t necessarily unique to 3rd Life, it’s a common aspect of all Minecraft series, but I think this is where the rather angsty nature of 3rd Life comes into play. A dramatic survival game, entirely unscripted, with all events hinging entirely on your interpretation of them? It’s not hard to see why 3rd Life fans are so creative with character designs and fanfiction – hell, a lot of 3rd Life fics simply narrate canon in their own more dramatic light. Canon-compliant fics are significantly more common for 3rd Life than other fandoms I've encountered, because people hear these simple lines and want to dramatise them, put their own spins on them. I don't feel that this would be possible with any other series, not to the extent that 3rd Life fans do it. Other series' canon is either already dramatic, and so rehashing it can feel repetitive, or so lighthearted that people write AUs/new storylines. 3rd Life strikes a brand-new balance.

The development of its characters is also bolstered by improv. As no events on the server are pre-planned, members have to react completely spontaneously to anything that occurs. They don’t get time to think – only to react as though they genuinely were in that situation. As I said at the start, 3rd Life inherently lacks bad writing, because it’s not written. Ren, for instance, began 3rd Life as a kind and harmless person, with others often walking right over him. His reaction to his death by Grian and Scar’s trap spurs him to become the Red King; he raises an army and goes to war, and ends the series having taken countless lives, becoming hardened by war. He begins Last Life by isolating himself from others, seeming jaded and unwilling to form alliances, ready for another war to break out. Being improvised, it’s impossible to say how much of this was deliberate, or if Ren just started building his base without thinking about continuity from the previous season. This improv is what makes it feel so natural. It isn’t planned beforehand. This is Ren’s natural reaction to starting Last Life. It makes his character feel so much more real than it would if this was all scripted beforehand.

3rd Life is, overall, a testament to the power of improv. It manages to be compelling and dramatic without any acting feeling forced or wooden. Its characters’ arcs feel natural, because they are natural. Placing such a heavy emphasis on dialogue, with the gimmick of the server being a vehicle for interactions to happen rather than the sole appeal of the series, makes it truly feel as though we’re getting a glimpse into the characters’ lives, rather than watching a story which has been written beforehand. We get to watch everything unfold in real time. 3rd Life has a magic to it that, to my knowledge, no other SMP has been able to recreate.

Gets super confused whenever someone asks what his thoughts on the community are.
