How adorable is this little hobbity 1960 house in Balnaca, Bihor, Romania? It has 2bds, 1ba and is only €200,000 / $217,390 and it's amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at the inlaid details on the door. 2 story pitched ceiling with beams allows you to look up and see the 2nd level. Wouldn't it be lovely to lie and read or nap in this swing, next to the fireplace?
Tumblr media
How cozy is this living room with the lovely wall of shelving.
Tumblr media
What wonderful stairs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On this side of the stairs there's a matching wood burning heat stove/oven and the kitchen.
Tumblr media
This house is too cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is so pretty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cabinets are made of frames with wooden crates in place of drawers.
Tumblr media
Love the blue paint on the sideboard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step down from the dining room and there's this wonderful conversation pit. Clearly, mid-century modern conversation pits were popular all over the world.
Tumblr media
Unusual bedrooms on the 2nd level are open to the main floor, and separated by netting.
Tumblr media
Very private property.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Within the fencing it's so pretty. 1.8 hectares / 4.57 acres is quite a lot of land.

Sophia said the budget for the week is $38k (most ridiculous target she's ever come up with) and I did that and she didn't mention if she was pleased with it or will she just continue giving me ridiculous targets every week like $40k then $50k then $103k and then if ever I don't meet her dumbass target, I get fired that's it, it's that easy

so this just came up on my pinterest feed:
Tumblr media
the average individual income in my nearest major city is $64,500 and average household income is $126,700. (according to Career Beacon, whoever they are)
assuming Career Beacon means that is the average gross salary, at 2.5x that's $161,250 and $316,750 respectively.
if they mean that is the average net household income, that bumps it up to $87,500 and approximately $200,000. So according to the pinterest advice, your budget for a house should be $218,750 or $500,000.
average house price in that same city? close to $700k
In my old neighbourhood in that city, condo PARKING SPACES were regularly listed for $40k-$75k. you can't even get a reasonable studio condo anywhere in the city proper for $316,000. in the outskirts, like out past the suburbs...maybe. but then you're paying through the nose for transportation.
you can get a nice (and I do actually mean nice, I'm not being sarcastic or snarky at all I swear) trailer home in the middle of fucking nowhere in a 55+ community for $150-$300k. good luck accessing transit though.

3racha + Minho reacting to when you complain about your bra
Genre: suggestive? not so much
Word count: 400k
Summary: reader bought a new bra but its quite uncomfortable to wear
Enjoy~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chan-
Chan would connect the dots before you would even begin to complain
Would see u squirming around
If you guys are at home, he'd slip his hand into your shirt, re adjusting the straps
"Its a bit better but I feel like i can't breathe" you'd huff out and he'd sigh
"Channnn" you laugh out when he unclasps it, throwing it over his shoulder
"YOU DON'T NEED IT BABYGIRL!!"
"Then what am i supposed to wear?" You'd question him
"These"
Shows you his hands, a teasing smirk growing on his face
(U know what i mean aheh heh😏)
Minho-
This man gives zero fucks
Minho would most definitely feel u up at any time of the day
Reading a book on the couch?
You'd end up with a lapful of him
His face buried in your chest
"New bra?" He'd mumble against the material
"Yeah, its quite uncomfortable to wear for so long"
His eyes would sparkle instantly, hands already trying to pull it off
"Minhooo" you'd giggle out when eventually his head disappears under your loose shirt
Changbin-
Changbin would definitely notice after you hiss in pain
"Baby, you okay?"
Would not be convinced by your answer
"You don't have to wear one babe" he'd say, feeling a little shy
When you tell him its a new bra that you wanted to try wearing, he laughs
"Let me try it on let me let me"
"Binnie there is no way that is ever gonna happen, have you SEEN YOUR TIDDIES?"
gives you a scandalous look when you playfully grope his chest
might end up trying to put it on-
Jisung-
Although he looks like he's engrossed in composing
His eyes are focused on you throughout
Notices how you fiddle around
Keeps quiet at first until it starts to bother him a little
"You okay, love?"
You would frown, lifting up your shirt to show him the dull red lines appearing where the bra hugged you
Panic mode on-
"BABY TAKE IT OFF IF IT HURTS"
Frantically pulls his hoodie off and gives it to you
Playfully scolds the bra and throws it in his bag aggressively

With over 400k words under my belt of purely crossover fanfiction (no really) I feel like I've dabbled enough in the genre to pinpoint three distinct types of Crossover Fanfiction Setups. With no one else to rant about this, and the hopes that this will be helpful to someone, here's you go:
A Breakdown on All Three Ways to Cross Fandoms Together
1- Fandom Fusion
My favorite type. This is where the worlds are happening on the same plane, simultaneously with one another. So, both stories are happening, or have happened, or will happen, without meshing with each other. Except they don't. Characters from each world meet, and get pulled into the other world's shenanigans. Very easy to do when both stories are both taking place in modern day Earth. Or in similar time periods of Earth.
2- Portal Crossover
Breaking out the isekai trope here. It's a classic work, with a built in setup in stories where grand cosmic scale is introduced. I'm talking the Gate sending Edward Elric into another world, or jonmartin finding Somewhere Else to be another medium entirely. Or Amphibia's music box, or Owl House's Between Dimensions or- or- or- you get it.
It's easy to do, and people are generally willing to accept PORTAL happening esp in superhero media and the like. You dont have to figure out how to make the fandoms compatible either, and gives a good common goal for all parties to work towards (i.e. return the interloper home)
Doesn't have to be a trans dimensional portal. Could be a time travel thing. Or visions. Or whichever plot device you find fits most. I enjoy this a lot because it forces characters who would never normally meet to interact and we need that. The two fandoms being transported could easily be fictional in each other's universes. Or not. The possibilities are endless with this one, just on a surface level.
3- Scenery Change
Last, there is the Alternate Universe Setting. Or, as I prefer, the Scenery Change. This is where the characters from one fandom are taken wholesale and translated into another setting, never having experienced their Original World. You know which ones I'm talking about. The Percy Jackson AUs where characters from another fandom are given godly parents. The Hunger Game AUs. The fandom w four easily separated groups that we do not talk about anymore but is prolly still v prevalent.
There's a lot that can be done with this, ranging both from fluff oneshots to 100k plots, but I've found that this is most effective when unique characters are placed into a very structured setting from another media, where their unique perspectives and reactions will color the overdone situation and give it life. The appeal of these crossovers lie solely in this: "We've seen it happen before, but what would happen if these characters were here?"
And. It. Works.
--------
So, yeah, careful observation has made me categorize these three premises. Tell me if you think there are more. Probably might do some breakdowns on the themes and the possibilities each premise holds the best weight for, and what goes into a crossover AFTER the two fandoms meet.

Doing an Amazon print on demand for BILY would be so cool! I would love to have BILY physically in my home. Taking in consideration how long the story is, how many books do you think it would make?
ideally i'd love to fit it all in one book HOWEVER- amazon limits to 800 pages- it would be a streach but i'd hope to get it into two or maybe three. idk maybe i'd do more options for people that wanted it split up differently. it would probably end up being expensiveee that way. i've toyed with how i would split it up before- and there are two possibilities- one with alot of books and one with only a few.
the one with alot of books is mainly chapters 1-11 (book one, beggining up until the m/c and hobi are at the train station, 12-28 (book 2, them forming their truce to the bulk of the m'/c's exploration into bdsm and the start of tae's arc) 29-39 (book 3, what would affectionatly be called vmin's book because it's like- 90% them). 40-56 (book 4, namjoon's rut, hobi and the m/c first kiss all the way up until they find the body at the beach), 56-69 (book 5, all the mafia parts of the series coming to fruition) 70-end ( book 6, the sweet afterstory and epilouges) this would be 6 books, i have some idea's for title names like; the god of bugs and fish for book 4 and 'hungry little things' for book 2, and of course before i leave you for book one!
the one with a few books would be 1-25 or the begining to the hospital scenes roughly 265k words, 26-56 or from the time tae and the m/c get drunk to when they find the dead body, and then 56- finish!
Also another idea that might be applicable to people who don’t want all the books is to just like- do your favorite chapters and I could list it as “name’s edition” provided the word count was under like 400k (roughly like 20 chapters)

This is just too cute to pass up and it's such a great price. The yellow 1911 home in Woodstock, NSW, Australia is the main residence and has 3bds, but you also get the town's original old post office that's been turned into a 3 room home. Plus, many of the furnishings will be included, all for $298,875. The post office operates 12 hrs. a week, the license can be transferred to the new owner and if desired, the hours can be expanded.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let us look inside the post office, first. Isn't this cute? It actually looks like a library or even a place where they do crafts.
Tumblr media
It looks like they sort the mail in here. Remember, it operates as a post office 12hrs. a week. I don't know what building this room is in, but I would imagine it's in the post office- it's too much trouble for the realty to put pictures in order, and it drives me nuts trying to figure out these houses.
Tumblr media
Behind the main room is this cozy spacious living room with a corner fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kitchen is wonderful, too. It's big, sunny, modern/vintage, and even has a vintage stove in the original fireplace.
Tumblr media
Lovely bedroom with stick walls.
Tumblr media
And, a lovely bath with nice big sink mounted on an antique sewing machine.
Tumblr media
And, now we're in the main residence which is the yellow house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It also has a cozy living room with a fireplace. You can tell by the soot on the mantel that they use it a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next is the dining room. It has with big sunny windows. It's also a large room. This is one large room divided by a bookcase and it's has lots of windows, but half of them have awnings.
Tumblr media
On the other side of the bookcase is a bedroom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm a little confused. This kitchen is huge and it actually looks like it's operating as a luncheonette. Has a very nice fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The front garden and porch for the yellow house are so pretty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is very nice, you can see the cute striped awnings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the back is a covered patio and a beautiful lawn.
Tumblr media
Another very pretty covered patio.
Tumblr media
And, in a private corner is a pool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interesting, cute property for a great price.
Tumblr media
Now, that's good to know, there's not only school, but a bowling club nearby.

Part Nine [4,023 words]
An AU of my completed, 400k+ word fanfic Catch the Wind [AO3], in which Elizabeth, not James, is the one to discover Theodora Byrne after she crash-lands into the world of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Historical research notes at the end, for fun 💜
Also now on AO3 and FF.net.
Masterpost - Part One - Part Two - Part Three - Part Four - Part Five - Part Six - Part Seven - Part Eight - *Part Nine* [you're here!]
Tag list [let me know if you want to be added!]: @missfronkensteen @teawithshakespeare @dancerinthestorm
The morning after the dinner party, James awoke to find the book he’d attempted to give Miss Byrne sitting neatly in the middle of his doorstep. Given what a grave miscalculation it had been, and the Irishwoman’s colourful turn of phrase, he suspected he’d been lucky that it hadn’t come with a note detailing exactly where he could put the book. She must have dropped it off herself, for a servant from the mansion would have left it with his maid, Hattie, instead. James found himself relieved that they hadn’t run into one another when she did so – and then laughed at himself. After all he’d faced, he was wary of the likes of Theodora Byrne. What was the world coming to?
She must have been up and moving alarmingly early if she’d come by before he’d risen himself – and while James was always an early riser, this morning he was excessively so, because he’d barely slept at all. After his talk with Elizabeth, he’d been unable to keep her words from his mind. Nor Miss Byrne’s face.
“I don’t suppose you saw how she reacted when Groves gave her that fright?”
He had noticed. Even before Elizabeth pointed it out, he’d noted it – but the pointing out of it meant that he could no longer brush it off through wilful denial.
It was difficult to say whether she knew she was visible from where she’d stood on the patio that night, but James suspected not. He could detect no artifice in her demeanour as she’d stood, arms curled around herself, staring unseeingly off into the night, looking so very lost. A far cry from the woman who’d all but given him a dressing down in front of one of his own men at the beginning of the night.
From where he’d been stationed watching her, he did not see Groves’ approach until his hand reached out to get her attention, but her response was something he’d seen in full. In all of his considerations of Theodora Byrne – more numerous than he’d ever admit – he’d never been able to even faintly imagine her cowering. And yet, that was what she’d done.
Whirling, she’d cowered down, and lifted a hand up before her face as if to protect it from a blow that did not come. All on sheer, unthinking instinct; at least if her following embarrassment was anything to go by.
She’d refused to be cowed by him thus far, and James was under no illusions as to how stern and dour he could be when he so wished…which was often. So what manner of man would it take to produce that response in her? Who had she expected the owner of the hand to be, lost in her thoughts as she was?
And what did that make James himself, if he’d spent all of this time being so openly hostile towards a woman who not only meant no harm, but was fleeing harm herself? It troubled him greatly – and it did not so much as wipe away his curiosity as give that curiosity new questions to chase. For the safety of those here was his responsibility - his duty - and if these new suspicions proved correct, Miss Byrne fell under that duty of care. So it still fell to him to puzzle out the truth.
Although perhaps more gently than he had been thus far.
It was that notion…as well as guilt…that had him lurking near the front windows of his home like some strange spectre, waiting to see if she would pass by again – which she would have to do, if she’d gone to town as he suspected. Luck would have it that she cut a striking enough figure as to make her impossible to miss.
****
Theo couldn’t pretend she didn’t feel just a little nervous as she walked by Norrington’s house on her return journey to the Governor’s mansion, after a visit to town that had been half-fruitful and half incredibly frustrating. As was her pattern here.
When she’d snuck up the front path to his home in order to return that stupid book (she’d hoped he’d be smart enough to take it with him when he left after dinner, but apparently not), she felt an adrenaline rush of the likes previously only achieved during an incredibly rousing game of ding-dong-ditch. Right up until she’d set the book down atop the doorstep and made it back to the street before the house, she’d been certain that the door would swing open and she’d be greeted with the sight of Norrington’s stupid, finely polished buckled shoes. Followed by that frown as if she’d lost her mind. As was his pattern, in all dealings with her.
It appeared, thankfully, that she’d gotten there just early enough to miss him. But she knew that luck wouldn’t hold up when she went by again, and when she noticed the book was gone from the step, she couldn’t completely convince herself that some servant or other had handled it without telling him. ‘The book gnome visited’ probably wasn’t the daily norm here, and it sorted of warranted some sort of comment.
She’d almost been clear of the house entirely when she heard the front door open, and long strides making their way down the path until he was close enough that he wouldn’t have to scream her name in the street like Marlon Brando’s unhinged brother.
“Miss Byrne.”
Would ignoring him be bad? Yeah, it would definitely be bad. God, modern folk didn’t know how good they had it, being able to hide behind the excuse of headphones. Stifling a sigh, she stopped, and then turned slowly. So slowly that she probably looked like she was trying to have a dramatic movie villain moment. Or like a music box with a broken spring.
“Captain,” she greeted flatly, looking at his neck rather than at his face.
The day was a scorcher, and standing still was somehow worse than moving – maybe because she knew the longer she lingered, the longer she’d be without the shade of the Governor’s mansion.
“What was your business in town?”
This time she did sigh, but she told him anyway – if she didn’t, he’d only make up something nefarious.
“I met with William Turner, to check the progress of my endeavour, and then I attempted to visit the library.”
“…Women are not permitted access to the town’s library.”
“Attempted,” she reiterated.
Her snippiness, horrifyingly, seemed to endear her to him more than it might’ve if she’d made an effort to smile awkwardly and pretend he hadn’t been a complete raging knobhead the night before.
“I’m sure the Governor would not object to your perusing his library.”
“They’re mostly history tomes,” she said. “I wanted to see what else was on offer.”
History tomes written from an eighteenth-century English perspective, no less. She couldn’t crack any of them open without hearing every single one of her ancestors simultaneously screaming in fury. And she could hardly visit a book shop, unless she was going to be enough of an ungrateful prat as to start asking Governor Swann for pocket money.
When he said little else, but made no move to leave, she nodded a farewell. “Good day, Captain.”
She barely moved to turn when he stepped forward, finally saying what it was he’d chased her down to say. And god, did it surprise her.
“Miss Byrne, I do not pretend that I do not owe you an apology after my…misjudgement last night,” he said. “And, as of this moment, my calculations tell me that we’ve roughly a thirty percent success rate in our dealings with one another. Perhaps I may be so ambitious as to push that up to fifty percent.”
Surprise got the better of her, and she met his gaze – finding green eyes staring into hers with a shocking amount of earnestness. Her own eyes widened, and a great deal of her annoyance fell aside of its own volition, which in turn shocked him. They spent more time than she suspected either of them would later admit, standing there, watching one another.
Theo was the first to come to her senses, breaking whatever strange spell had come over the both of them.
“What do you suggest?”
He hadn’t actually apologised, but she was willing to let that fall by the wayside if it would make this bullshit stop.
“A revision. Of yesterday.”
“I’m not sure I have the energy for another dinner party,” she snorted.
He stifled a smirk of his own. “Nor I. But I do have a personal library that I am rather proud of. You are free to browse it, and borrow what you wish.”
Whatever defensiveness yet lurked in her posture was truly gone then, and she blinked at him owlishly.
“…Really?”
“Truly,” he said – and even failed to take offence at her doubt.
“I…” she shifted her weight from one foot to the other, and then nodded. “All right. Thank you.”
When they reached his house, Theo didn’t comment on how he left the front door wide open as she passed through – not even when she was tempted to make a joke about having an easy escape to hand. Once inside, he paused in the entranceway and she pretended she wasn’t making a study of the house. It was difficult to picture, after all, how a man like Captain Norrington might be when at home. It conjured images of his “relaxing” with poker-straight posture, his shoulders straight and his nose in the air as he leafed through a book.
The place was nice. Not a particularly surprising fact, given that he was considered the logical choice for Elizabeth. Homes here were bigger than she was used to back home – they were still a long way from terraced houses and semi-detached maisonettes – and while this one wasn’t a mansion, it was still pretty damn big, even by the standards she’d seen here. Despite that, though, everything was simple. Masculine, really. Dark, finely polished wooden furniture, with a distinct lack of florals or frills. That was the job of the woman, she supposed. Still, she hardly disliked it without all that. It suited him.
“Hattie? Come here a moment, please.”
Sounds of boots against the hardwood flooring rattled from upstairs, and a young, blonde maid appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Yes, sir?” she quickly descended, greeting Theo with a smile and a quiet how do you do?
“This is Miss Byrne – take her to my study, where she will pick out whichever books she so wishes.”
Hattie, for a brief second, looked as stunned by the gesture as Theo had been, but she recovered quickly and nodded.
“Yes, sir. Follow me, please, miss.”
The study showed more signs of life than any other part of the house she’d seen. While still, unsurprisingly, neat and orderly to an extent that was almost unnerving, it felt actually lived in. A small handful of books and notebooks were stacked carefully atop the desk, along with a couple of quills that had been sharpened but thus far unused, side by side perfectly symmetrically.
Theo hadn’t realised she’d been surveying the room until she remembered Hattie’s presence, turning and smiling sheepishly.
“Sorry. I’m a little distracted. The heat.”
“Not at all, miss,” she gave a polite smile – although her eyes remained fixed on her with curiosity as she continued. “The captain is rather particular about the way his shelves are organised – by subject matter, and then alphabetically thereafter. Is there anything in particular that you’re looking for?”
“No, no I…” she almost admitted she was still too stunned to even really consider what books she might want to read. “…I’m sure I’ll know it when I see it.”
The blonde nodded, remaining by the doorway. Theo turned to the shelves. They were all leatherbound volumes, and so it was difficult for much to really leap out at her without her properly reading the spines.
“Have you lived here long?” she asked Hattie, mostly to fill the silence as she looked. “In Jamaica, I mean.”
And also because part of her felt the need to establish that she didn’t view servants as window-dressing. Even if that was what they strove to be.
“I came over with my parents – so long ago that I scarcely remember it, miss.”
“You’re used to the climate, then.”
“It becomes less noticeable over the years, miss,” she offered a sympathetic smile. “And Captain Norrington always makes sure the servants – here and in town – have all of the ice we might need, to make our work more bearable, in the hotter months.”
Theo smiled tiredly. Even despite their rocky beginnings, she didn’t find that surprising at all.
When she finally returned downstairs, Captain Norrington was sitting on the sofa in his sitting room, long legs stretched before him, his coat removed to reveal a white shirt with rather dramatic sleeves, and a finely embroidered waistcoat. His cravat had been loosened, his collar pulled away from his neck, and the white wig sat on the sofa beside him, his dark hair plastered to his head as he rested with his face tilted back, eyes shut. This day was proving to be one of the hottest since her coming here to Port Royal, and while she was often driven to self-pity in her corset and skirts, she consoled herself with the fact that she didn’t need to wear that white monstrosity atop her head every day.
Theo knocked at the table by the doorway and he started, sitting up and regarding her with surprise.
“Forgive me,” he said. “I thought you’d left.”
As he spoke, he made to take up his wig but Theo interrupted.
“Please don’t, if you’ll only be uncomfortable. This heat is…a lot,” she finished lamely. “I’m still trying to get used to it.”
“As am I,” he snorted, and surprised her by leaving the wig where it sat. “It’s cooler, out at sea. And you’ve arrived during one of the hottest seasons we’ve ever endured here.”
Hopefully the townsfolk wouldn’t take that as an ill-omen. The redheaded wench brings the fires of hell with her, or some such crap.
“I was spoiled for choice,” she explained. “Took a wee bit longer than I realised. I wanted to show you what I picked before I left – to make sure it’s all right.”
The last thing she needed was to pick out something with great sentimental value. With her luck, she’d choose something passed down the Norrington line for centuries, and he’d either resent the choice, or be at the Swann’s door tomorrow to retrieve it.
He motioned her over and she approached, side-stepping the other sofa to draw nearer and present the books to him.
“Flora and Fauna of the Caribbean,” he read aloud, taking up the first one.
“Seems a good idea to know what I’m surrounded by,” she supplied – mostly to fill the silence.
He nodded readily enough, moving to the next one. “Gulliver’s Travels.”
“Escapism,” she shrugged.
“And…” he paused when he came to the third and final one, eyeing her curiously. “Marcus Aurelius?”
“For when the escapism doesn’t work,” she said drily.
Norrington surprised her then, for he chuckled – just a little one, but it seemed genuine all the same. As was his curiosity. For the first time, she felt as though he was speaking to her for the sake of speaking to her, rather than because some sense of chivalry demanded it or, worse, because he suspected her of something sinister.
“You’ve read it before?” he asked, a note of surprise to his voice.
“A few times,” she admitted. “It’s the sort of thing where a refresher never hurts. I…may I?”
She gestured, unsure whether she was doing the right thing or not, to the sofa opposite him. With little idea of whether it was proper (although they’d have to be really daring to get up to anything with all of the doors and windows wide open, and a maid in the next room), or whether he was simply waiting for her to finally piss off and leave him in peace, she knew that it was a risky move. But she also knew that he was making an effort – a real one, this time – and so she’d feel iffy if she plundered his shelves and left without so much as a bit of polite chit chat.
This was new territory to her, too. If anybody else had done what he had last night, she’d have never so much as looked in their direction again, regardless of if they’d let her borrow a thousand of their fancy books. Even now, she was wary – half expecting him to ask a perfectly innocent question, only to skewer her with whatever answer she gave. But…he had the movies going for him.
After all, they depicted him to be good. Maybe he wobbled a bit in the middle, but even then, Theo couldn’t much fault his actions – for they pretty much always adhered to the moral code he’d had drummed into him, likely since birth. Pirates bad, English good. If anything, an excessive sort of loyalty to Jack after he had a hand in his losing everything would suggest a near-impressive lack of brains, and she couldn’t say she’d have behaved any different were she in Norrington’s shoes. Or wig. In the end, it wasn’t like he wouldn’t pay for the more questionable of his actions, either. And dearly, at that.
No, everything she’d seen of him – though he’d yet to actually do any of it – had been understandable, and spoke to a pretty decent strength of character. He hadn’t been a dick to her for the sake of being a dick, of that she was certain. It came from a place of protectiveness, she supposed, rather than Amelia Simmond’s particular brand of sneering sadism. Furthermore, he’d even been kind to her once. As he’d said himself, he had a success rate that stood at about a third, and the first catastrophic meeting had been the fault of her blundering more than anything he’d done. No, a second chance wasn’t only the wise thing to concede from a strategic standpoint of making this place liveable, but it felt right.
He gestured his ascent, and she slowly sat down, resisting the urge to fiddle with her skirts as he continued to hold onto the books.
“I always liked the passages about fire. A lot,” she explained, narrowing her eyes as she tried to recall one of them without butchering it. “The blazing fire makes flames and brightness out of everything thrown into it.”
At that, he offered a tight-lipped half-smile that wasn’t half so sarcastic and mirthless as the ones she was used to seeing from him.
“As a fire overwhelms what would have quenched a lamp. What's thrown on top of the conflagration is absorbed, consumed by it - and makes it burn still higher.”
Theo made an impressed noise at the back of her throat, smiling. “That’s some memory on you.”
He huffed a laugh. “A blessing and a curse. As well as a necessity, given my occupation.”
“I understand that. My dad- my father used to do these little tests with me – how many carriages were on the street that we just walked past? What colours were the horses pulling them? So on. Just to really drum it into me to be aware of my surroundings.”
Of course, the carriages had been cars, and he’d been asking her what brand they were, but she already sounded like a blithering idiot here half the time given her limited ability with period drama speak, so she had to be careful.
“A habit more suited to a commanding officer and his men, I should think,” he commented, a bemused furrow taking root in his brow.
But still, it was curiosity – not suspicion – that ruled his features.
“Most trouble people find themselves in comes from their not being aware of their surroundings,” she shrugged a little. “Of course, I’m not so naïve to think it’s always avoidable – or the fault of a person who doesn’t notice the knife at their back rather than the one holding the knife, but whatever danger awareness can negate, he wanted to be sure that it did in my case.”
“A noble aim.”
“Mm. He was my gateway into all that,” she gestured towards the copy of Meditations in his hand. “Always used to say it was foolish, wanting to be the person who always wins. Too much of that is reliant on outside forces, and the second you lose, your confidence is shot and you start feeling sorry for yourself. It’s much better to just strive to be the person who gets back up again, after every defeat. That, you have full control over.”
Norrington looked at her strangely, then. Not in a bad way – but in one she couldn’t quite place. If she’d been more optimistic about their interactions, she might’ve dared to say he looked impressed. His features certainly softened from their usual grim disinterested set. They looked at one another for a long moment – so long that Theo almost wondered if she’d just made a tit out of herself yet again in some unknown way.
Then, finally, he said quietly.
“You must miss him greatly.”
Theo forced a strained smile, half-wishing she’d never brought him up in the first place. “Yes. Well. Just more fuel for that fire of mine, right?”
Norrington snorted – not unkindly – and then stacked the three fairly thin books, and held them out towards her with one hand. Theo reached her hand out and grasped them, but didn’t full pull them from his hand quite yet. Instead, she paused and offered him a tired smile.
“Fifty percent. Thank you, Captain Norrington.”
He smiled then, and Theo noted silently to herself that he was far too handsome than was good for anybody.
“Fifty percent, Miss Byrne,” he echoed.
She left feeling lighter than when she’d stepped inside.
Notes: I can’t find anything suggesting it was an official rule that women weren’t allowed in libraries, but everything I have been able to find indicates that the only reason I can’t find that rule in writing is for similar reasons that we don’t have ‘please don’t shit on the floor’ as an explicit rule in public spaces today. It’s just assumed that everybody knows.
What I did find is that women started pushing to be able to use public libraries somewhere around the 19th century, and that to contend with this, libraries had to create separate reading rooms specifically for women, so no nefarious mixed-sex reading would take place. With libraries around this time period, from what I can find they were mostly intended for the use of university students, or scholars. Both of which could obviously only be male, because woman brain small.
So I don’t think it’s unrealistic that Theo would’ve been turned away from the library in Port Royal. If anything, I think it’s more of a stretch to think that the English would’ve bothered building a library in Port Royal, because the people important enough to read books could probably afford their own private libraries. Given that women’s literacy wasn’t considered particularly important, either, and the only women who could read would’ve been of a higher class and able to afford their own books, that would’ve played a role, too.
But hey, maybe they wanted to make sure the lower-ranking officers had easy access to books, in order to expand their minds. I could imagine the likes of James, and Gov. Swann, being all for that. I do imagine it being very, very small, though.

We may have to move because finances, and I’m very anxious.
When we moved in to this place, rent was 1800 or 1850/month (honestly can’t remember). This was mid-2020. We have lived here for 3 years, and rent has slowly increased, I want to say it was 1950 our second year and 2100 this year. My husband pays the rent in full so I really don’t remember.
We will be here for 4 more years for my med school, so we were talking about do we try to buy, do we rent, etc. Initially we got excited about buying, but lo and behold we cannot find any place even 30 min+ outside of town that is actually doable… nothing that could work is under $400k (what we can currently afford a full 20% down payment on), and even condos are in the $450-500k range. We could put less down and then have PMI, but estimates for monthly cost are like $3000-3500/month depending on closing costs, APR, etc. Which we feel like we can’t do financially. So back to renting.
We don’t know how much they will ask us for rent… so we were looking around. The townhouse next to us was just rented for $3000.
That is a 40% increase from our current rent.
And given that we would be renting and not putting equity in a home, Rob is adamant that if they are asking 3k, we WILL find a cheaper place.
If the idea of moving my family 2 weeks before school starts didnt terrify me enough, I don’t even know where we can afford to live anymore. I found one place that is just over half this size but still has 3 bedrooms (so we can each have our space- rob works from home and I have school…) that is approx what we pay now, but it’s in an apartment complex proper with no garages, and my car doesn’t reliably start in the winter if it’s parked outside overnight. 🙃 The next cheapest is $2750/month, but it already has 4 applications in which means it’s gonna be gone before we know if we need to move. It’s also further away from campus but I could still make it work.
The issues:
The university here is admitting more students than they can house. There was some mad dash for who could live in dorms and apparently everything was gone within like 5 min. TONS of college kids and grad students need housing now so there is a huge demand for rentals thus driving prices up. FWIW, the people who are renting the place beside us are college kids.
People. Keep. Moving. Here. First it was people trying to get away from ridiculous housing prices in CA, and now it’s from the east coast. I can’t blame them for moving to find affordable housing. But what they are doing is driving demand up and prices up- people will make a first offer in a house at 10-20% higher than asking IN CASH. Locals cannot afford it. The newcomers “affordable housing” is creating the problem they are trying to get away from in a new area. They are displacing their housing insecurity onto us. Who is to blame? Greedy property management / development companies, probably.
Three weeks ago my anxiety was SO low. I was feeling great overall, sleeping super well. Now I literally cannot sleep because of just the potential of this housing insecurity and I am so angry.
FWIW: median family income is ~63k, and we have state income tax. Mean income is much higher at $85k because of higher outside earners pushing this up. How is a typical local family of 4 supposed to afford 3k housing. How are they getting approved for that? They aren’t. Even 2 beds are going for ~2300. Can a family making 63k even get approved for THAT?
This all makes me so sick.

Biden's State Of The Union: a bridge to bipartisanship?
Joe Biden's 2nd State Of The Union Address seemed to be about checking boxes. 1st, Biden attempted to check the 'Fit for Duty' box. He appeared to be his snarky self, channeling the old persona of Blue Collar 'Joe from Scranton'. He took a few jabs @ Republicans, starting w/ his introduction of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He also instigated a kerfuffle w/ Marjorie Taylor Greene & others over Social Security & Medicare. Throughout his address, Biden tried to emote the swagger of that Senator from Delaware, who had the ear of Reagan, Bush, & Gingrich.
In his Address, Biden said that America is about 'possibilities'. He touted the accomplishments of his Administration over last 2Yrs, & made his pitch for Congress to finish what he started. Joe Biden ran on a platform of bipartisanship; to back this up, he touted 300 Bipartisan Bills passed since he took Office. He expressed his plan to 'Restore The Soul of America', starting w/ The Middle Class. He spoke of building an economy from the bottom up, & the middle out. Like Donald Trump, he supports a Made In America Campaign where Our supply chain begins @ Home.
The Star of the 'Made In America' Campaign, is 'The Chips & Sciences Act'. Biden touts how it will create hundreds of thousands of 6 figure income jobs, that WILL NOT require a College Degree. The expectation is that these Chip Production Sites will bolster & hopefully restore the Communities around them. Presently, the National Unemployment Rate is @ 3.4%- a 50Yr low; this (supposedly) includes lows for Black & Latino Communities. On top of recent job growth #s, Biden also touted 10 million New Business Applications.
He pointed out how 30 million Employees have to sign Non Compete Agreements, & how Workers deserve 'Dignity @ Work' that gives them a Right to a Living Wage, Affordable Housing, & Affordable Child Care. Biden took a couple of jabs @ Republicans, while speaking on the Debt Ceiling. Speaker McCarthy already appeared on News Shows to say that he supports taking Social Security & Medicare off the Table; why did Joe Biden linger on the subject? McCarthy can do his own wrangling.
The Biden Administration were the 1st to say their Fiscal Budget is non-negotiable; how can they fault Republicans for crying foul? Ultimately, Biden agreed to compare Plans. His Plan for Restructuring the Tax Code entails no Tax Increase for families making below $400K, a Billionaire's Minimum Tax of 15%, & quadrupling Corporate Buy Back Stock Fees. Biden touted how his Administration reduced the Deficit by $1.7T, & how Programs like the 'Junk Fee Prevention Act' will spur economic growth.
The subject of Infrastructure gave Joe Biden another opportunity to take a jab @ Republicans. He remarked how Red States will get Projects earmarked, just like Blue States. Members Of Congress may not have voted for his Infrastructure Plan, but 'i'll see ya at the Groundbreaking'. Under this plan, Biden highlighted:
Bridges, Tunnels & Roads
Lead Pipe Removal
Affordable High Speed Internet for All Americans
ALL Construction Materials used for infrastructure must be Made In America
Biden's 'Inflation Reduction Act', is basically a Plan to use restructuring the Tax Code as an excuse to reform Prescription Drugs & Climate Change initiatives. No one (in their right mind) disagrees w/ $35 Insulin, Fentanyl Prevention, or Clean Water efforts; that said, politicians have been slow to act on these measures. The manufacturing angle of this Act sounds promising, as it rewards Companies for buying American made components for their operation. Education, Immigration/ Border Security, & COVID Protocols rounded out the balance of Biden's State Of The Union Address.
Biden stressed the need for quality Public Education for grades Pre-K through 12. He also expressed a need for access to Local/ Community Colleges, & College Debt Reduction. He split COVID fallout into 2 categories: Economic Fallout & Public Safety Concerns. Under Economic Fallout, Biden reiterates his Made In America Agenda to bolster job growth. He again touts Job Growth #s as an indicator that America is getting back to business; pointing out how We are outperforming the rest of The World.
Under Public Safety Concerns, Biden spotlights the family of Tyre Nichols. He goes on to speak about the need for better Police Training/ Reform, more Community Programs, & Gun Reform. He talks about 'Brown & Black' families having 'The Talk', but I don't know of ANY 'Brown families' having that 'Talk'. Joe Biden's ease @ changing 'Black American Struggle' into 'Black & Brown Issues' is becoming an Art. His short memory is already legendary. He speaks about implementing Community Programs, but he was an architect of Benign Neglect Policy that eliminated these Community Programs over 40Yrs ago.
I found it ironic how Joe Biden could invite Tyre Nichols' family to The State Of The Union Address, but didn't mention the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act. He spoke about funding for better Police training, but the combined budgets of the Nation's Largest Police Departments likely rivals the Defense Budgets of NATO Countries. There's already enough $$$ being spent on training. Why is training not a factor when Police are somehow able to apprehend armed White assailants w/ little incident? It was interesting to watch both Sides of the Aisle show sympathy for Tyre Nichols' Mother in one moment, & applaud an increase of Police Budgets in the next. I made note of the CBC Members that applauded.
Gun Reform, like Abortion, is an ongoing issue. The REAL problem, is how to restrict Blackfolk, while respecting everyone else's 2nd Amendment Right. Gun Control wasn't an Issue, until The Black Panther Party protested in Sacramento nearly 60Yrs ago. White Americans have an Inalienable Right to bear Arms, & always will. Gun Control is not a real thing; Society needs the same personality types that are misbehaving w/ firearms to protect them from 'The Big Black Boogeyman'... It's a strange dance.
On the subject of the Southern Border & Immigration Reform, Biden spoke about resources for Border Control, & a pathway to Citizenship for Migrant Workers & Children of Illegal Immigrants. Border States have been literally begging for help; the Texas Governor has been busing Illegal Immigrants to Northern Cities for months. A bus went to Kamala Harris' residence, so The White House had to know things were critical on The Border. It is estimated that over 2 million Illegal Immigrants have entered America on Biden's Watch; not counting tens of thousands of Ukrainians & Afghans entering from Tijuana. How was Barack Obama able to keep Border Crossings low, while Joe Biden seems overwhelmed?
Biden's International focus was on Ukraine & China. According to him, Ukraine is fighting against 'Putin's Tyranny', & We as Americans, should do everything possible to support their fight for freedom. I would personally like an accounting of what 'We' gave, & where it went. Redacted has reported on Al Qaeda & ISIS Soldiers being paid $2,500/ Week to fight w/ Ukraine- is this true? What are Our Tax dollars paying for? Redacted, The Grey Zone, & Jimmy Dore have all talked about high level theft of funds & Black Market activity in Ukraine.
On the issue of China, Biden said that We seek Competition, not Conflict. The U.S. helped China rise- from a 3rd World Nation, to a legitimate World Economic Power in under 50Yrs. America's ongoing meddling in Hong Kong, along w/ rising tension in Taiwan has apparently struck a nerve in Beijing. The recent drama of balloons violating U.S. Airspace are merely another round in a Marathon Dance Competition. America's dependence on China for basic Staples, is the Real Issue.
According 2 Biden, we're in Our strongest position to compete w/ China, & Anyone else. We will work w/ China, but WILL defend Our Sovereignty. He went on to say how No other World Leader wants to trade places w/ President Xi, going against America. Biden ultimately says that The State Of The Union is Excellent. He emphasizes a Nation built on ideals, not geography, collectively working together- sounds promising. Gov. Sarah Huckabee- Sanders delivered The GOP Response, & didn't waste time picking Biden apart.
According to Gov. Huckabee- Sanders, Joe Biden inherited:
The fastest economic recovery On Record.
The most secure Border in History
Cheap, abundant 'home grown' Energy
Fast rising Wages
A rebuilt Military
A World that was stable & @ peace.
Over the last 2Yrs, Joe Biden & The Democrats have spent Trillions in reckless spending, while creating the worst Border Crisis in History. 100,000 Americans are dying from drug overdoses annually- mainly fentanyl. Domestically, criminals roam free, while Internationally, We have been unable to stand up to China... Joe Biden has been unwilling to protect Our Border, Sky, & Our People- he is not fit to serve as Commander In Chief. She deadpans that Biden is caught up in 'Wokeism'.
Huckabee- Sanders goes on to repeat several GOP talking points that date back to Newt Gingrich's 'Contract w/ America'. She says that giving every child access to quality education is the civil rights issue of today. To that end, she proposes an 'Educate, not Indoctrinate' Agenda, that eliminates Critical Race Theory (CRT), & use of the label 'Latinx'. She closes by saying that America is Free, but this Freedom is under attack & America is in danger. The Biden Administration has failed Us, but the GOP has America's future in mind. They are still the place where Freedom reigns & Liberty never dies.
Clearly, Gov. Huckabee- Sanders is towing the Party Line. As Biden tried to build himself up as a virile, stable, & capable Leader, Huckabee Sanders tried to paint a picture of someone old, feeble, & out of touch. The GOP sees Biden as Dems saw Ronald Reagan. The Country was literally more 'Black & White' back then, so Reagan was able to get away w/ more than Biden can. As for 'The Future', how can Republicans truly believe this, when their base is quickly becoming a Minority?
All of this plays into an ongoing narrative, where Democrats & Republicans take turns assuming Leadership. In theory, One leans Left, & the Other leans Right. In practice, Both Sides find consensus on issues that promote the continuance of White Supremacist Policy, by way of Institutionalized Systemic Racism. Minority Groups understand & accept AmeriKKKa's 'pecking order', in return for resources & privilege. The GOP tend to use 'Non- Racial' language to filter out Black America, while Democrats use 'Liberal- Progressive' language to do the same. Both depend on Black America's sense of 'fair play', & equality for Everyone.
As ADOS, We rationalize why a Group should get resources ahead of Us, while Everyone Else behaves like they have some inherent Right to be ahead of Us. We know that some Immigrants & Minority Groups have prejudices against Black Americans; Joe Biden's lack of concern for 'Black specific Policy' in effect, tells them that they're justified in their thinking. If he doesn't care, why should they? To them, America is a 'Grab Bag'. When you consider the fact that Joe Biden showed more concern for Migrant Workers, than taxpaying Black Farmers who have been victimized & oppressed for generations, it's pretty easy to see how his State Of The Union Address condones an Anti Black Agenda- I call it: Benign Neglect 2.0
-Just My 2 Cents
