Yandere Henry VIII/Anne Boleyn Headcanons (Poly!Romantic)
❝ 👑 — lady l: I thought about this a while ago and it was saved in my drafts, but I only decided to write it now. I hope you like it and forgive me for any mistakes! ❤️❤️
❝tw: cheating, polyamorous relationship, obsessive and possessive behavior, mention of fights and jealousy.
❝ 👑pairing: yandere!henry viii x female!reader, yandere!anne boleyn x female!reader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anne was not blind to her husband's prying eyes on you. She felt angry, jealous and wanted to get rid of you as quickly as possible. But when Henry strictly forbade (threatened) her from doing something against you, she was shocked and smart enough not to act against his orders.
That being said, she started researching more about you. She was intrigued, it wasn't uncommon for Henry to keep mistresses and although she was hurt by this, there was nothing she could do. She hated it, but she was powerless against the King's power.
However, it was only after meeting you, after talking to you, that she finally understood why Henry was so interested in you. You had a unique grace, an aura that attracted her and made her comfortable. Before she knew it, Anne found herself longing for your company more which left her confused. Who in their right mind would fall in love with their husband's mistress?
It didn't matter anymore, not when Anne found herself falling more and more in love with you and soon began to feel jealous of her husband with you. It was unfair that he could have you and not her. .She deserved you more than him.
Henry, on the other hand, was over the moon. He quickly took you as his official mistress and no longer bothered trying to hide his affair with you, the love he felt for you. His desires for you were public knowledge and he was more than happy.
He knew this wouldn't please his wife, but he didn't care. Not when he had you in his arms, being loved and adored by him. You were so perfect, so sweet and so beautiful. You were made for him. Completely his.
Anne watched her husband interact with you with jealousy and longing, she wanted to hold you. She could no longer continue like this, being ignored. So she decided to act. During one night when her husband was visiting her, Anne decided to talk to him. Tell him how she feels about you. That she was attracted to you. Henry didn't know what to say.
He was stunned and silent, just watching his wife as if she were crazy. But Anne kept talking, wanting to make sure he understood. Henry remained strangely quiet and after a few minutes, a sparkle appeared in his eyes.
Henry would never accept sharing you with anyone, but he found the idea of sharing you with his wife strangely exciting. It wasn't ideal, but he saw nothing more pleasurable and lovely than having his mistress and his wife together.
They are both extremely possessive of you. They are jealous of each other with you, but they are more jealous of you around other people. You are theirs and Henry will use his power as King to deal with anyone who threatens his relationship with you. Anne had also used her influences to her advantage.
You are endlessly spoiled and adored. Servants are instructed to fulfill your every whim and desire. There is no doubt about who really holds all the power over them. Your relationship with Henry is public knowledge, but with Anne is kept private.
But that doesn't mean she stays away from you because she doesn't. Anne does her best to be by your side during the day, the touches and looks are discreet and shared only between you. Henry also participates, but he has no shame and actually kisses and touches you in public. He is the King, after all.
There is still a lot of jealousy and fighting over you between these two, fights that only became bigger after Anne's pregnancy. She wanted you with her all the time and so did Henry. You are the only person who can calm them down, usually sweet words and subtle touches do the trick.
You will be dragged into this never-ending tumultuous marriage, the fights that always turned into making love on the carpet in your rooms at the end of the night would always continue. Would the gifts, power and love you received be enough for you to endure this turbulent relationship with your King and Queen?
You forgot your worries when you were together with your lovers, in the privacy and tranquility of your chambers. Clothes on the floor and heavy breathing. In the end, you would always give in to them. You were as much theirs as they were yours.

Pov: Catherine of Aragon chooses you specifically to be her "Lady in Waiting"
Tumblr media
A/n: I went to see SIX [The US Tour Boleyn Cast] once, and now it's my new hyperfixation. You can kinda tell who my favorite queen is
It's very rare that the Six wives would 'propose' to a Lady in Waiting while touring. First of all, there's only four of you. Second, they're singing to compete for who had it worse with Henry VIII after all.
You were a part of that "Ladies in Waiting" Band, interacting with the Queens between shows was difficult for you, especially. To at least catch the attention of the Golden Queen: Catherine of Aragon.
But seeing how she was always bitter about her divorce with Henry VIII, you just kept your feelings to yourself
It wasn't like you were King Henry VIII's younger sister
You often like to be by your lonesome between shows. To practice even more before the evening show.
That was... Until Catherine of Aragon began joining you on your extra practice sessions.
You also helped her in any way you could with her solo No Way.
You slowly opened up to the idea of enjoying someone's company.
She would often be the one to bring the both of you lunch while you remain behind.
One day, you made the decision to go with her to a lunch outing.
You underestimated how fun it is to be around people. Catherine of Aragon showed that to you.
Right before the evening show, you began unraveling how you felt about her, to her face
"Every time I watch you, whether it was rehearsal or a show... I'm... I'm in awe. I see how your crown makes it look like it was made from the rays of the sun... My Lady, you are as beautiful as the first sunrise..."
Catherine got down on a knee and 'proposes'
"Will you be my 'Lady in Waiting'?"
She gives you a gold rose to place somewhere on your instrument or outfit
Aragon smiles smugly as she catches every glimpse of you wearing the gold rose with pride
Boleyn, Seymour, Cleves, Howard & Parr were surprised to see Catherine finally boasting about something that wasn't about her bitter resentment towards Henry.

Your father felt threatened when Catherine, your mother, started to become the center of your attention.
That's where he decided to annul the marriage and get with Anne Boleyn who promised to birth him a male heir.
Your mother and older sister left the court, yet you were to stay with Henry.
Henry wants a male heir not only to rule England after his passing but to also protect you, having a brother will assure that you have a secure future in court.
Or at least that's what he believes.
Also you receive many suitors one of which, is the handsome Edward Seymour.
But your father turns them all down deeming them all unsuitable for his Tudor flower, you.
After hearing the news of your mother on her dying bed, you tried to convince your father to allow you and Mary to visit her.
But he refused.
This made you distance yourself from your father.
After, Anne Boleyn gets beheaded, Jane Seymour dies, you find yourself becoming a mother figure to your younger siblings.
Adding to that, Mary returned to court during Jane Seymour's marriage, so your bonding with her became stronger.
Things were going well, until you have been infected by sweating sickness.
It was a nightmare for Henry, seeing you weak and laying in bed, and he could not do anything to save you.
"Oh God, no, don't take away my sweet girl, not her, please"
He stayed by your bedside until you passed away at the age of barely twenty.

Six Wives vs One Wife
Tumblr media
Pairing: Benjamin Green x Reader
Content: Broken Marriage, History Nerd!Reader, Strangers to Lovers (Implied), Australian!Reader, Autistic!Reader, GN!Reader
Length: Short Fic?
POV: Third
~
He heard their rambling before catching sight of the source. Whoever they were must’ve been excited. Benjamin was on a date with Julia at the Tower of London, somewhere he’s wanted to visit but never had the time or money. His wife had disappeared off to another room while he stayed behind looking at the Anne Boleyn exhibit.
“No you don’t understand Mama, Anne Boleyn couldn’t cry because she knew what it meant. Plenty of sources cite so, that’s why she’s such an important figure and the best known Queen Consort of Henry VIII”
Benjamin smiled to himself at the thought of someone here with their family. Rambling on about such a niche topic with such passion. When he finally caught sight of the person talking he was stunned. They were a sight to behold, dressed in a comfortable sweater while they clutched tightly onto a leather notebook.
“I know darling, you tell me a lot”
The persons accent stuck out the most to Benjamin. He decided they must’ve been from the Oceanic region with the close reminiscence of the voices he was surrounded with daily. When he caught sight of the person he couldn’t take his eyes off of them, watching as they pointed to parts of the exhibit and explained to an older woman just what Anne Boleyn meant to England.
“You know before she was crowned Queen, Henry had actually slept with her sister. The union resulted in two alleged bastard children that Henry never acknowledged. A man’s reputation is far more important than the truth, even now. The world hasn’t changed for us at all. It’s why their stories are so important”
Benjamin watched as they were whacked by their mother as they cursed. He couldn’t help but let out a light chuckle. The two of them went on and he couldn’t help but follow. It wasn’t like Julia missed him, she would’ve messaged him or called.
Occasionally the younger of the two would chime in with an odd fact about the Tower of London. More often than not they were oddly morbid, Benjamin had come to the conclusion that they were a fan of the more unloved things in life. The next exhibit that was stopped at happened to be where Julia was. Benjamin returned to his wife, greeting her. Trying to avoid the question of why she left him alone. Unbeknownst to Benjamin, someone across the room was staring at him. His short hair and the jacket that hung a little loose around his frame, the dark rimmed glasses fixed upon his nose.
“Seems like someone’s caught your eye dear, why don’t you go talk to him?”
Benjamin heard this and turned around to lock eyes with the same person he was listening to earlier. His face reddened slightly as their mothers comment set in. Turning back to Julia he felt the glare his wife had.
“Will you stop looking at me like that Julia?”
A harsh slap came down on Benjamin’s arms, unlike the gentle affection their mother had shown them. He let out a hiss of pain but he knew he couldn’t retaliate. Not in public and not ever. Long before Julia Benjamin had made himself he’d never hurt anyone. Although that plan seemingly failed to those who knew him by his old name.
“I’m not looking like anything. You want something younger go get it. You’ve simply realised I’m too old haven’t you Benjamin?”
Before Benjamin could even open his mouth to respond Julia had walked off. Heavy feet meeting the floor with echoes. A heavy sigh exited his mouth as he occupied himself with reading the small frame about Katheryn Howard and her beheading.
“Did you know that Katheryn Howard was beheaded with an ax while Anne Boleyn was beheaded with a sword? Making Anne the only Tudor figure who was ever decapitated by sword”
The voice, the same Australian voice who he’d heard rambling moments earlier appeared by his side. Benjamin looked at them, staring into their eyes.
“Katheryns story is said to be one of the most tragic of Henry’s wives and while I agree, they’re all tragic in their own way. What makes her story such a tragedy is she went through so much pain and her story is barely ever told, times don’t change much. It’s what draws me to the six of them”
A smile creeped across the persons face as they spoke. The content was dark but their attitude shocked Benjamin. They spoke with such cadence on the subject it made Benjamin wonder if they were a history major.
“My names Y/N by the way. I’m sorry if I seem awkward, I’m not great at social cues. Autism makes me that way so most of my conversation is down through my talk of history”
A small creeped across Y/N’s face as they spoke. Benjamin returned the favour as a toothy grin crossed his face. It was a genuine smile, not the ones he’d been faking with Julia for the past few months.
“I’m Benjamin, nice to meet you. Take it you’re a bit of a history fan?”
A small chuckle escape Y/N’s lips and all the whole Benjamin couldn’t help but notice their mother smiling proudly at the two. As Benjamin returned his focus to them, he listened with intent as they explain the detailed history of what led up to the beheading of Katheryn Howard.
They struck Benjamin with comfort while they spoke and led him throughout the Tower of London. As if they’d been a million times although it was just their first. He had learned that they weren’t a history major but rather it was their special interest, that this had been a dream of theirs since childhood and they were here with their mother. The feeling Benjamin got with Y/N was familiar to what he felt when he first met Julia, except it was much more passionate and raw. It wasn’t that you were close in age, it’s that you were nice and genuine. He’d just have to get to know you this time before proposing marriage, as well as divorce Julia.

the early evening starts to descend as the anticipation in the castle thickens heavily. tonight, a ball will be hosted by none other than the royals of the palace themselves. this quite clearly, is a major event and it is not at all like the regular court meetings that you were familiar with. the kinds of balls your monarchs would throw were known to begin during the evening and end during the early hours of dawn doing god knows what. more footsteps and whispers of gossip about the infamous guests coming from all around the world spread more and more rapidly, but you continue to focus on the task at hand.
“y/n, dear, do you mind tightening this a little more for me?” she queen asks as she eyes the mirror in front of her, squeezing her waist a bit more to exaggerate her proportions. it is her ball after all, she needs to look perfect.
“yes, your grace,” you pull the strings of the stays firmly to make it fit even more tighter, looking at her face for a sign of approval.
“perfect,” she smiles as you start doing the next steps.
a bumroll. a simple light silk spanish farthingale boned with cane. a plain underskirt. a beautiful dark patterned full kirtle. a deep red overskirt. a matching bodice with sleeves. more sleeves. gold jewelry and pearls. hair and makeup. all was quite taxing, but you were used to it.
finally patting down on the skirt of her gown, getting rid of any lint, dust or even hairs, you bid your queen a goodbye as she leaves the bedchambers with her mistress of the robes.
you let out a breath you didn’t even realize you were holding, turning to walk to the balcony.
the moon has become a close friend of yours. you often visited her in the hours you felt the most loneliest, whispering secrets only the two of you know. sure, being a lady in waiting and a lady of the bedchamber was a big honor. coming from an aristocratic family to having the chance to be standing beside of the queen in the center of the court was definitely a spot you had to fight for. but now that you are here, having the queen’s trust and being a big player at court, there were times when you wish that you weren’t. these second thoughts have always been something you feared of. what if i’m just being ungrateful? what if i’m just exaggerating things? you memorized it all by heart. if anything, it really isn’t your first time doing this. it is more like a regular occurrence. when you are not doing courtly things, working on your duties or working with the queen, you help dress the her up. making sure she looks perfect for the night and watch her head off to the ball with her (very handsome) king and even the other two of her ladies in waiting. all the while you were left behind to wait for her arrival back to her bedchambers. as much as you love your highness, there were moments where you truly felt lost, but only the moon knows that.
a sudden knocking from the entrance of the room interrupts your thoughts as you straighten yourself up to answer it.
opening the door, you see that it is non other than the king himself.
johnny (the first of his name) has always been known to be a king that the nation wholeheartedly adored. he was handsome, he was clever and he was very kind too. he is ambitious in his reign as king and he stays very loyal to his queen. it would be a lie if you said you weren’t attracted to him, but honestly who wasn’t?
the queen. being the lady in waiting that would most often be tending to her in her bedchambers, you would listen to her venerably spill many little secrets during those sleepless nights after a busy day. she would mindlessly babble on how johnny was such a good person, but she didn’t love him in that way. she only married him because it was arranged by her father to help strengthen the two nation’s alliance. but even then, she never really fell for him and nor did he. she often discussed between her servants in secret on having at least one of her ladies in waiting be his mistress mostly for the convenience of it. she wanted the best for him and her ladies. and it made sense too, it would be something between the court so there would be no major scandal and every lady in waiting was already from a very wealthy family so it was a perfect fit.
“your majesty,” your head instantly bows on instinct before opening the door wider to see him in full. it’s hard to not stare, especially in his formal attire that fits his frame so perfectly. “what are you doing here? shouldn’t you be with the queen down at the ball?”
“i wasn’t feeling up to it. besides, the queen has the ball covered, and i wanted to spend more time with you.”
his bluntness has rendered you speechless. the king of all men wanted to spend time with you? sure, you’ve noticed the little glances he’d throw your way during court meetings but you never really thought of it. but without your knowledge, he violently liked the way you held yourself and how you would speak so bravely during those meetings. devout, unflinching and composed to the end in a room full of noblemen.
“may i enter?”
you open the door wider for him to step into the room. you see him go straight to the balcony, his eyes set on the moon.
“the moon looks lovely tonight,” he smiles, his forearms leaning on the railing.
“she sure does,” you mirror his movements, resting your hands near his. as you admire the moon, he can’t help but admire you in the moonlight.
as you both sit in a comfortable silence together, whispers from the servants below subtly reach the queen one lady in waiting at a time. she smiles in victory. her little plan finally worked.

The year was 1536, mere weeks after Henry the VIII changed the religion of England simply to divorce his wife. The castle was bustling about as they planned the upcoming wedding of Anne Boleyn and the King. You were a lady in waiting to her and as such, you were tasked with running about getting inane items for her.
You were in the nearby town, picking up orders that Anne had placed for the wedding. You had a carriage nearby for not only transport for yourself, but everything you picked up. A knight stood by helping you to protect the items from thieves.
The last thing you had to pickup was several bolts of fabric. You were grabbing the last of the bolts, when a man bumped into you rudely, making you drop at least one of them.
“Damn it,” You grumbled staring at the white lace that was now covered in mud.
The man turned to her, yelling at her for blocking his path before wandering away.
“Oh yes. Not like you couldn’t see me standing here for several minutes holding my weight in fabric and couldn’t possibly go around me,” You mumbled loudly.
You heard a deep chuckle behind you. You turn to see a handsome man, with shoulder length brown hair and warm brown eyes.
“Did he hurt you?” He asked as stepped forward.
“No. But he did ruin a very expensive bolt of lace that was meant for the queen. So, I’ll have so much fun explaining that to her,” You replied with a heavy sigh, adjusting your grip on the bolts.
You were tired, and you weren’t ready to try and talk to the vendor. He had been very short with you and were not in the mood to try and beg for more fabric.
“Allow me to help you,” He offered cordially, taking the bolts from her.
He walked with her to the carriage and placed them inside. He motioned for her to wait, as he walked back over to the stall. She could see him talking to the vendor, and the vendor walked away and came back with a much larger bolt of lace fabric. You see him pay without a care. He carried it over to her and presented it to her.
“This is very similar to the fabric that was ruined, but much prettier. I’m sure the queen won’t mind,” He stated with a charming grin.
“Why...? Why help a complete stranger?” You asked grateful but cautious, taking the fabric and setting it in the carriage.
“Maybe… I was hoping for chance to ask you for a stroll, or to lunch one day? The tavern nearby may not be as fancy as the royal court, but they do their best,” He proposed taking her hand softly to press a kiss to it.
You stared at him somewhat surprised and bit your lip for a moment.
“Hm. I’m sure they do. However, I don’t even know your name,” You said coyly.
He chuckled, “I’m Caspian and you?”
You tell him your name adding, “But… most my friends call me Dahlia.”
“Dahlia? Why?” He asked her curious.
You stepped into the carriage with a secretive smile, poking your head out lightly through the window once the door closed.
“Guess you’ll have to find out during that stroll and lunch, Caspian,” You teased before having your guard drive off, making your way back to the castle.
Caspian stood there watching it leave, his charming smile slowly falling away. A large bulkier man, the same man who had bumped into you, appeared by his side.
“Is she the one?” Came his deep voice.
“Yes Jasper. I do believe so. She will be my ‘in’ to the castle. Our good king has made far too many enemies. Tis only a matter of time before they try to target him,” Caspian said lowly, his Mediterranean accent coming in more thickly.
“Indeed. Let’s go get a drink aye?” Jasper patted him on the back.
The images faded and blurred all around him.
Billy blinked harshly as he was pulled from the animus. He rubbed at his eyes with his thumb and index finger, as he leaned forward, cracking his neck a moment later.
“Hate the headaches that come with this damn thing. Why was I pulled?” Billy asked Frank looking up at him and Curtis.
“Been in too long. You know the rules,” Curtis said tapping away at the computer.
Frank offered his hand to help him up, which he took with a groan.
Billy sighed, stretching as he straightened up.
“Go get some air. I’m going to sift through the data so far. Go get a drink,” Curtis dismissed him with a wave.
Billy nodded grabbing his jacket, phone and wallet that was sitting off to the side. He made his way downstairs, stepping out onto the streets of London. They were searching for piece of Eden that was located here in London. They were currently residing in a large studio loft that was located off the beaten path.
He made his way to his car, hopping in it, to go for a drive to clear his mind. He drove around for about an hour, making his way deep into downtown London. He parked outside a pub, wanting a drink. He made his way inside, taking a seat at the bar. He ordered a beer, and slowly drank it. As he drank, he felt someone staring at him.
He subtly looked around and saw a glimpse of a woman sitting near the booths. He felt strange as he tried to get another look at her. He felt like he knew her; she seemed so familiar.
He sees her walking toward the door finally. She looked like Dahlia, but that wasn’t possible? Right? He blinked and she was gone. He got up, tossing some money down, and followed the woman. However, when he stepped outside, she was nowhere to be found.
Billy turned around several times trying to figure out where she went. He was confused. Did he imagine her? Was he experience the bleeding effect? That’s not possible. They had been so careful. He decided he was tired and just drove back to base. He went to bed without saying much to the guys.
Several weeks had passed and he kept seeing this woman everywhere. He was sure he was going crazy. After about 2 weeks of it happening, he told the guys about what was happening with a grimace. That admission led to them holding off time in the animus because of it.
One day, he was strolling around the London Eye Pier, bored. He was ready to go back in and figure out where this piece was. He stood off to the side for a moment, watching the Ferris wheel move. He heard a shout to his right, a man running his way, with a bag clutched between his hands, and a woman yelling ‘stop thief.’ Billy stuck his foot out tripping the thief.
The thief tripped, dropping the bag. Billy grabbed the fallen bag and glared at the man who tried to lunge for it again. The man stuttered in his movements, when he spied the look Billy was giving him, before scrambling to run away. He turned to the woman, gasping softly. It was her.
“Thank you so much!” She exclaimed as she took her bag from him.
“You’re welcome,” He replied with a smile, blinking several times, amazed she was real.
“I’m sorry… this is going to sound strange… but do I know you? You…seem oddly familiar,” She said staring at him softly.
“Ya know… I was about to say the same to you. I’m Billy,” He introduced holding out his hand.
She says her name, before going, “But. Friends call me Dahlia.”
She took his hand with a smile. He thought about just simply shaking it, but he couldn’t resist. He gently lifted it to press a kiss to her knuckles.
She gazed at him with surprise, before giggling prettily.
Billy smiled at her, before checking her over for a moment “You okay though? He didn’t hurt you?”
“No. I’m okay. Just surprised me. Thank you for asking. I’m… I’m not usually this forward, but… would you be interested in having dinner with me?” She politely asked with a hesitant smile.
“I would actually. Tomorrow night? Say, 6 pm, you choose the restaurant?” Billy suggested.
“Yeah. Sounds good. Umm. Lemme give you my number,” She said pulling out her phone.
They exchanged numbers, and parted. Billy had a slight skip in his step. He walked in, whistling causing Frank and Curtis to look at him curiously.
Frank slowly followed him over to his room, leaning against the door.
“What’s got you all happy?” Frank asked squinting at him.
“I wasn’t imagining her. It’s… it’s really Dahlia. I ran into her. We… we’re going to have dinner tomorrow,” Billy breathed a sigh of relief.
Frank nodded with a smile, “Good to know you’re not that crazy. We’ll resume animus work in two days then. Is she as pretty as her past self?”
“Better. I mean… technically she looks practically the same, but… seeing her in reality… not just… a memory? I just… She’s gorgeous,” Billy struggled to describe how he felt.
Frank chuckled, “Never seen you so flustered over a woman. Maybe she’ll be good for you. Go get some rest.”
Billy nodded, stripping down to go shower, before laying down. Once he was done cleansing, he laid down in just some boxers, grabbing a book. He tended to read for a bit before crashing for the evening. He read until he felt tired, and he dreamed of a girl with a bright smile and beautiful eyes.

Today was the day of Y/N and Peter's presentation about Queen Elizabeth I and Y/N wasn't nervous at all. She was confident about their presentation. Plus, their slide designs looked really cute and refreshing to look at. Y/N's outfit that day was a modernized version of a dress from the Elizabethan era. She designed it herself and she was proud of the outcome and that she got it done in time. Eunice helped, of course.
The sleeves were short and slightly puffed. The skirt went until her knees and it had layers underneath to make it puffy as well. The body of her dress was tight fitted because of the corset. The dress had a boat neckline and her only accessory was a pastel choker. In fact, her whole dress was pastel colored and her hair was styled in loose curls.
When Peter entered the room, Y/N was reading her book in her seat. Peter sat next to her and sensing his presence, Y/N turned to him and smiled, "Good morning, Peter."
"G'morning, Y/N." Peter gave her a tight-smile as he set his bag down. Y/N continued reading and without looking up from her book, she said, "C'mon say something about my outfit. I feel like you have something to say about it. You always do."
"How did you know that?" Peter asked. Y/N looked at him and smiled, "I can tell. Just say it. No hard feelings."
Peter cleared his throat and took a good look at her. He didn't have anything insulting to say. However, he said, "You look like you came out of a Melanie Martinez music video."
"She was part of the inspiration for this design." Y/N chuckled. "She's amazing."
Peter didn't get to say anything because Mrs. Johnson walked in the room causing Y/N to place a bookmark on the page she was reading and putting it in her bag.
"Who will present today?" Mrs. Johnson asked. Peter and Y/N raised their hands and Mrs. Johnson smiled, "Ahh, the geniuses. I expect a great presentation. The floor is yours."
Y/N took the flash drive from her pocket and handed it to Peter which was a subtle way of telling him to set it up. Mrs. Johnson walked to the back of the classroom and sat on the chair where observers usually sit. Y/N patiently waited as Peter sets up the whole thing. When it was ready, Y/N mouthed a small 'thank you' to Peter who just smiled and nodded.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Hi everyone! Peter and I will be talking about Queen Elizabeth I's early life until she became queen. We were told not to tackle her reign as queen because someone else will be presenting that." Y/N introduced and explained.
"Yes, please proceed." Mrs. Johnson smiled.
Peter clicked the next slide.
Tumblr media
Peter cleared his throat and racked his brains for what he remembered. He and Y/N agreed that he'd explain the basic ones and would pipe in if he could remember some parts of her life.
"Queen Elizabeth I was born on September 7, 1533. She was the only child of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. If you don't know who Anne Boleyn is, she's Henry's second wife and she got executed for treason." Peter said. "Anyway, since Anne Boleyn got executed before Elizabeth's third birthday, Elizabeth was left discarded and removed from succession of the throne."
"It was kind of complicated because Elizabeth and her sister, Mary, were due a certain level of care and they'd be in and out of favor depending on King Henry VIII's mood and marital status. I mean, what kind of father would do that?" Peter said with so many emotions. Y/N was in shock that he actually read everything, but she was also proud that he did so.
"Eventually, they realized that Elizabeth was a 'highly prized potential wife'." Peter said in air quotes. "I air quoted 'highly prized potential wife' because spoiler alert to those who don't know: SHE DIDN'T GET MARRIED. She's not called The Virgin Queen for nothing, guys."
"And because she was a 'highly prized potential wife', she was well educated and her education was first rate. She excelled in languages! She was intelligent, articulate, and open-minded. In short, she was ahead of her time. I mean, that's my opinion, of course." Peter said.
"Why do you think she was ahead of her time, Mr. Parker?" Mrs. Johnson asked.
"Because she was open-minded before anyone else. All of us have already evolved and we all keep evolving and growing as a society and yet there are people who are still so close-minded about things. If Elizabeth was open-minded since the 1530's, why aren't we all open-minded now?" Peter answered which made Y/N smile. It made Mrs. Johnson smile too and nodded for Peter to continue.
"And because she was well educated and stuff, she grew up quickly. It was great that she matured so fast but it suddenly didn't feel great when her brother, Edward VI, became King of England in 1547." Peter started. "Henry's widow, Catherine Parr, married soon after Henry's death. She married Thomas Seymour."
"It was reinstated under the terms of Henry's will that Elizabeth would be Edward VI's successor. She was under the care of Catherine Parr and living in her household. At the age of 14, Elizabeth first attracted male attention." Peter said.
"Not much is to be known about Thomas Seymour except for the fact that he was power hungry and in my opinion, a pedophile. I based that opinion from the fact that Thomas Seymour, in his late 30's might I add, engaged in appropriate behavior with Elizabeth. When Catherine discovered that, Thomas assured her that it was all innocent. One day, Catherine found Thomas and Elizabeth alone together in an embrace and because of that, Elizabeth was sent away in May 1548."
A classmate named Cindy raised her hand. Peter looked at her and said, "Yes?"
"Was Elizabeth okay after that?" Cindy asked. Peter grinned, "Good question."
"Yes, she was okay. Being sent away made it easy for her to move on from all of it, but only for a short time." Peter answered. "It was only a short time because when Catherine Parr died in... October, was it?" He looked at Y/N for help.
Y/N continued where Peter left off, "When Catherine Parr died in September 1548, Thomas Seymour tried to renew his relationship with Elizabeth. Of course, he failed. So, he manipulated Edward VI."
"Why did he do all those things?" Flash asked.
"Well, he was power hungry and he wanted to secure his authority that's why he did what he did. Thomas was arrested in 1549 for his inappropriate behavior towards Elizabeth and plots to overthrow his brother who was the Lord Protector of England. That same year, he was executed." Y/N shrugged as Flash nodded. Peter clicked the next slide.
Tumblr media
"Being Edward VI's sister, she caused little trouble compared to her sister, Mary, who went against the King's orders. When Edward VI fell ill in 1553, he went against Henry VIII's wishes and disinherited his sisters. Although his main issue was with Mary because of her very Catholic beliefs, disinheriting her would mean that he'd have to disinherit Elizabeth as well." Y/N reported.
"Well, that sucks." Flash commented.
"Indeed." Y/N said in agreement. "Anyway, when Edward died, Lady Jane Grey became queen... only for 9 days, though."
"A queen for 9 days? Why only 9 days? Did she die too?" Austin asked.
Y/N shook her head, "Nope."
"Who is she, anyway? She came out of nowhere!" Nadine exclaimed. "It's like she came there unannounced or something."
Y/N went to the board and grabbed a chalk and drew a chart of the Tudors for their classmates to understand. Peter stared at her in awe. "This girl knows her shit." Peter muttered under his breath as he crossed his arms out of habit.
Y/N turned to face everyone and started explaining, "Okay so let's start at the beginning. Henry VII and Elizabeth York are married and they had four children, namely: Arthur, Henry, Margaret, and Mary Tudor. Henry VIII and Jane Seymour had a son; Edward VI. Unfortunately, Jane Seymour died during childbirth."
"Anyway, Henry VIII's sister, Mary Tudor, married Charles Brandon the First Duke of Suffolk. They had a daughter, Frances Grey which makes her and Edward VI cousins. She married Henry Grey and they had a daughter who we all know as Jane Grey, the nine-day queen. In short, Jane Grey is Edward VI's niece." Y/N explained. "I hope that answers your question, Nadine."
"It did, thanks." Nadine said.
"I think it's weird that she's his niece." Allison mumbled.
"Now to answer Austin's question," Y/N said as she put down the chalk and rubbed her hands together to remove the chalk dust. Peter offered her a hand sanitizer which she gladly took and put some on her hands before giving it back to Peter and rubbing it on both of her hands.
"When Edward VI was dying, he disinherited both of his sisters and made Jane Grey his successor. So when he actually died in 1553, Jane Grey became queen. She was only queen for 9 days because the public basically didn't want her, they wanted Mary, Henry VIII's eldest and Edward VI's sister, to be queen instead. When Mary became queen, she wanted Jane Grey to be executed but she was spared upon the wish of the ones in the Holy Roman Empire. She was still a prisoner in the Tower, of course. Then she actually got executed when she refused to convert." Y/N explained. Austin nodded and took notes, "Thanks, Y/N."
"Okay so, now we all know that Mary became queen because the public wanted it. Elizabeth's life changed once again when her sister became queen and she now lived with her sister at court. Mary decided to reinstate the Catholic faith and of course it caused an uproar and such. Then this man named Thomas Wyatt started a revolt against Mary and it all just went downhill from there. In stark comparison to her irrational sister, Mary, Elizabeth became a figure of reason and enlightenment."
"Elizabeth was removed from the throne once more and after the rebellion was quashed, Elizabeth was interrogated because Mary suspected that Elizabeth took part in the said rebellion. There was no proof that Elizabeth had taken part in the rebellion, but she was taken to the Tower of London where she stayed for two months. In there, she was repeatedly interrogated and questioned. She never wavered from the protestations of her innocence and her love for her sister. Then Elizabeth left her prison for Woodstock and she was in house arrest there for nearly a year and the public was beginning to side with Elizabeth because Mary was getting crazy and out of hand. Elizabeth remained under house arrest until Mary came up with something to remove the threat."
"What was the threat?" Angelica asked.
"Elizabeth's ever-growing popularity was the threat." Y/N answered. "That's why she was sent to Woodstock."
"As Mary was thinking of a way to get rid of Elizabeth, she fell pregnant or she was already pregnant. If Mary had a healthy child, Elizabeth wouldn't become queen. But being pregnant is not easy so, this meant that Mary had to find Elizabeth a place for succession if she were to die in childbirth."
"She ended up not giving birth because her pregnancy was just a figment of her damaged imagination. In short, it was just a phantom pregnancy. Mary's health declined and she died on November 17, 1558."
"If Mary didn't bring her back in line for succession, how did Elizabeth become queen, then?" Brad questioned.
Y/N smiled, "Elizabeth became queen under the terms of Henry VIII's will. Now that she's queen, she already knew what to do and what not to do based from her family members. She learned from them and used it as stepping stones to be a great queen."
Tumblr media
"Thank you for listening!" Peter and Y/N in sync. Mrs. Johnson and the rest of the class clapped for them. Peter took the flash drive and gave it to Y/N as they went back to their seats. Mrs. Johnson got up from her seat and went to the front of the class, "Thank you, Mr. Parker and Ms. Y/L/N. That was an astounding presentation! Both of you really did you research and I'm proud of both of you. You guys didn't disappoint."
Peter and Y/N smiled at each other and gave each other a high five. The bell rang signalling that class was over. The students put their things away as they prepared to leave the room.
"To the ones presenting tomorrow, my expectations are high!" Mrs. Johnson called out. "Bye class!"
Everyone left the classroom and Y/N left ahead with Peter running after her. "Hey, Y/N!" Peter shouted as he caught up with her. Y/N stopped walking and looked at him. Peter reached her and said, "Thanks for backing me up in there. I have to admit, we were amazing."
"Yeah, we were." Y/N smiled. "We make a great team, huh? I'll see you in the next class. I have to go to the library."
Peter nodded as he watched her walk away. What they did in class was great; they were great as a team. Perhaps it wasn't so bad to include her in the team after all.
After the last class, he went to the compound to report to the rest of the Avengers. When he arrived in the meeting room, everyone was already there and he was late.
"There you are, Peter! Sit." Tony said. Peter didn't hesitate to sit down at the only empty seat. Everyone looked at Peter expectantly.
"So, how's recruiting going?" Steve asked as he looked at Peter intently.
"It's alright. We did a report together and we were great. I have a feeling we'll get a high grade on it." Peter smiled.
"Does this mean that you finally agree to adding her to the team?" Scott asked with a giddy voice.
Peter shrugged, "It doesn't hurt to add one more person with powers, right?"

:)))) I hope y'all are proud of my fucking research

Criminal- Anne Boleyn
Tumblr media
Pairing: Anne Boleyn x Reader
Characters: Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII
Warnings: N/A
Request: Anon- Hi I was wondering if you could do a request for a fem reader and Anne Boleyn where the reader and Anne have a romantic relationship, but the reader defends Anne against the king saying she hasn’t be cheating on him, even tho she knows she has? Happy ending please :) I’m sorry about the lack of happy ending
Word Count: 597
Author: Charlotte
You were Anne’s lady’s maid and her best friend. You had worked for her for many years and cared about her dearly, and even though you were from different worlds, it was as though she was your sister. You were willing to support and take care of her wherever you could, but you never thought you would see the day where she was being arrested and taken for execution.
Anne was stood before her husband Henry, her wrists held behind her in shackles with guards at her sides. Henry had accused her of multiple affairs, none of which he had proof of past word of mouth but everyone knew that he had found another woman he wished to marry and wished for Anne to be removed from the situation. He had found many issues in divorcing his first wife, no matter what he did Catherine would always be in his life due to his eldest daughter Mary and he doubted he would be able to rid Anne either due to their daughter Elizabeth. It would be a lot easier for him to just have her killed, whether it was just or not.
“You will be taken to the tower until your execution date,” he stated. “I haven’t decided when it shall be.”
You knew that she didn’t love her husband, she never had, and you knew she had had an affair, but Henry had as well. No part of you could cope with seeing her be killed for wanting love that she would never get from her husband.
“Take her away.”
It was your only chance. You took a step forward, gaining the attention of guards who rushed to stop you from approaching the King.
“Your majesty,” you called out. “Please may I speak.”
He narrowed his eyes at you. “Be quick.”
“Your wife is innocent,” you stated. “I had an affair with a nobleman, and she covered for me. It would bring him far more shame to be known to have been with me than a Queen. If I were to ever find a husband, then I needed my virtue to seem pure and she helped me protect that. If anyone should be punished it should be me.”
You could see the anger grow within him. He cared little for the truth, but he wanted rid of his wife. You had ruined it however as you had brought question to her guilt in front of many.
“You would risk your life for her?” He asked.
“I have been Anne’s lady’s maid since she was in the French Court. She is the closest person to me, and I cannot see her die for a crime she did not commit. If you wish to punish an adulterer, then you cannot as I am not wed but I am the one who sought a married man and acted as a whore. It may not be as serious of a crime as adultery, but I must accept the punishment of my tarnished virtue along with what you see fit for me, your majesty,” you lied.
He let out a sigh, before waving to the guards that held onto Anne. They undid her shackles, releasing her from her fate. Without hesitation they approached you and shackled your wrists.
“Take her to the jail to be held,” the King stated. “I guess this means we shall need to find you a new maid.”
Henry had turned to Anne with an almost gleeful smile before you were dragged from the room to be held amongst prisoners for a crime you had never committed.

Hello, can you do a headcannon Yandere (father) King Henry and Yandere (mother) Anna Boleyn with their only surviving son?
❝ 👑 — lady l: I really like the idea of them being platonic yanderes for a son, so I hope you like it! Forgive me for any mistakes and good reading! ❤️
❝tw: obsessive and possessive behavior, overprotection, mention of miscarriages, murder and implied cheating and toxic relationships.
❝👑pairing: platonic yandere!henry viii/anne boleyn x son!reader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anne was desperate to conceive a male heir, her only hope of staying alive and maintaining the interest of the King who, after some miscarriages and the birth of a daughter, has already began to wander towards one of her ladies-in-waiting.
So when she discovered a new pregnancy, she desperately prayed for a son and that she wouldn't suffer another miscarriage. She could not bear the loss and pain. Henry was pleased with the new pregnancy, but worried. Anne had already had several miscarriages and was only able to produce one healthy child, a daughter.
Anne took great care of herself during her pregnancy, taking care of what she ate and drank and trying to maintain good health. The first few months were the most tense, with fear enveloping both Anne and Henry. As the pregnancy progressed and there was no miscarriage, Anne became more confident.
When the day finally arrived to give birth, she was anxious. Henry was also anxious and he was so nervous when he heard Anne screaming outside the room, he didn't know what to think. When a baby's cries finally came after what seemed like hours, he entered the room.
Anne held her baby on her lap and cried softly and when a doctor approached Henry and said, "Congratulations, Your Majesty. You have an heir", it was the first time that Henry felt complete happiness. When he picked you up, he was smiling from ear to ear. Not only were you the much-desired male heir but you also saved your mother's head.
Both of them would be extremely overprotective of their only son and those close to you will be scrutinized. Henry has become very paranoid about your safety and takes every precaution possible.
You are always by your mother or father's side, you cannot be alone at any time with a stranger. Anne, especially, would like to keep you sewn to her side all the time. She cares about you a lot and is always checking up on you. When you get sick, she becomes paranoid that you will die.
You are your parents' greatest pride and Henry doesn't try to hide it. He neglects all his other children and gives you all his love and affection. He takes you for walks, hunting and spoils you with all the perks that a future King deserves. In addition to showing you off before the Court. After all, you are the future King.
They are both very proud of anything you do. Any milestone, no matter how small, will be applauded by them. Your first words, the first time you walked and everything else will be treated with great celebration. Expensive parties are thrown in your honor all the time.
As you grow up, they become even more overprotective and controlling. Anne does not want you to leave the Court under any circumstances and Henry allows you to do so, but only with many guards. There were many threats lurking and they couldn't let anything happen to you. May God forbid anything from happening to you as the results will be disastrous.
Anne hates it when you spend time with other people, especially if they are women. The only women you need in your life are your mother and your older sister, Elizabeth. Although she understands that's a part of a man's life, she still doesn't like it and any potential mistress or love interest will be dealt with quickly. She is your mother, so no one has more right to you than her.
Henry is more than aware of his wife's actions and although he doesn't encourage them, he doesn't reprimand her. In fact, he's probably the one who encourages you to enjoy your life even if it always leads to fights with Anne. It was worth it when you looked happy. And your happiness is very important to him.
Your potential friends will be scrutinized and if your parents don't like them, they will leave. Henry and Anne won't sentence them to death at first, but if you or they are stubborn, they will be tried for treason. Don't you understand that you shouldn't trust anyone other than your own family? Your parents are the only ones who want the best for you.
Henry and Anne are smothering and protective parents but they only have your best interests at heart. They want you to live a full and happy life, but with them by your side. You were everything they both wanted and they would be damned if they let anything happen to you. England still does not know the fury of its monarchs nor the overwhelming love they feel for their only son.

How would Yandere platonic Catherine of Aragorn react to see Reader (Henry’s 8 eldest daughter) holding baby Mary in her arms, saying “Don’t worry baby sister, your older sister will protect you from any dangers.” And she’s rocking Mary back and forth, so she won’t cry and starts singing a lullaby (Reader’s mother was singing the same lullaby, before she died). The same goes for Yandere platonic Anne Boleyn and Jayne Seymour and Henry 8 to see Reader holding baby Elizabeth and Edward rocking them back and forth, singing lullabies.
I think yandere platonic Henry’s 8 wives only wished that Reader would be their daughter. Also this sight would warm their hearts.
So how would Yandere platonic Henry 8, Catherine of Aragorn, Anne Boleyn and Jayne Seymour react to the scenario I wrote above? Can you describe their feelings and what would they do? Something tells me that Mary, Elizabeth and Edward would be obsessed with their older sister.
The Princess is King Henry's first child born to his precious first wife. She's the only Princess who doesn't mind being a girl. Henry has always been the perfect father to the Princess. In fact, Catherine is very happy and emotional at this sight. She's most likely supporting Princess Catherine every time she miscarried and lost a baby. That's why the Princess means a lot to Catherine. For Catherine, the Princess' consolation is the only support for her disappointment and sadness at not giving birth to a man. I think Anne Boleyn will treat the Princess better than Mary. At first it was because she was afraid of the King. However, as she loves the Princess in a short time, she tries to get along with her. When Anne gives birth to a daughter, she finds solace in the Princess. The only shelter of the mother during the miscarriages and baby losses is the Princess. It will likely prevent Princess Anne's execution. However, even if he cannot prevent it, he will protect Elizabeth. The princess will ensure that both Mary and Elizabeth have titles. Thanks to the princess, Mary will be able to see her mother. Mary and Elizabeth become very attached to the Princess after the loss of their mother. Jane loves the Princess very much. She dreams of having a daughter like a Princess. The Princess supports her until Jane gives birth. The princess takes on the role of mother for Edward after Jane dies. Mary, Elizabeth and Edward see the Princess as mother and older sister figures. I expect all three of them will be yandere. The assurance, support, love and attention they receive in their lives comes from the Princess. The Princess takes the place of their mother, who never existed in their lives. So it's not surprising that they developed unhealthy tendencies for the Princess.

Out of curiousity (and not wanting to lengthen the other post) What makes you consider Weir a bad historian? I always felt like that but I am wondering why others too
Well, I’ve only ever read one thing written by Alison Weir (her biography of Elizabeth of York) and if anyone wants to add to the discussion they are welcomed to do it, but from what I’ve seen regarding her other books as well is that they are poorly sourced. They are poorly sourced, and she makes such assumptions based on scant evidence that she chooses to focus on to a ridiculous degree for some reason, that her books read more like fiction than serious, historical research. Her fiction books are something else too: she has recently written that Anne of Cleves had a bastard child before marrying Henry VIII (because of… stretch marks?) and this was a reason why he divorced her, and it seems her portrayal of Anne Boleyn in her book A King’s Obsession was also wildly offensive. I talk more about her biography of Elizabeth of York under the cut.
Alison Weir thrives on sensationalised history, that’s the truth. She’s partially responsible for popularising the myth that Richard III and Elizabeth of York had a romantic, carnal relationship (gross!) in her biography because she chose to interpret a possible letter from Elizabeth to her uncle as a romantic one, even though there are only surviving fragments of said letter. In a 2013 interview she admits that:
“I don’t take that view nowadays … on reflection I think they mean something else entirely …  it would not surprise me if his relations with his niece have been sensationalised. For which I fear I must bear some of the blame!”
We all know Gregory’s The White Queen is out there to prove that the damage has been done even though Weir herself nowadays doesn’t believe in that theory – and not only in fiction, I’d say! Recently I was reading an excellent biography of Margaret Beaufort and the author also said that Elizabeth of York may have “harboured romantic feelings towards her uncle” and her source was none other than Alison Weir! I wanted to weep and puke at the same time.
As Weir herself claims in her interview, the words saying that Elizabeth was the king’s ‘in body’ had never appeared before in other versions of the letter, and even if was the case, medieval people had a very different way to express themselves that would suggest to a modern reader an erotic level even in the case of friendships or religious worship. The following letter is an example offered in the book Sexuality in Medieval Europe: Doing Unto Others by Ruth Karras. It’s from the priest Alcuin to the emperor Charlemagne, in which Karras has omitted the word ‘sacred’ to make this point:
Tumblr media
Alcuin was tutor to Charlemagne himself, his sons and other young men sent to court, and he is considered by many to be the most important scholar of the Carolingian renaissance. Many authors have also pointed the homo-erotic (or plainly erotic) language he used in his letters. Karras goes on to say:
While for us the erotic equates with the carnal, for many medieval thinkers the erotic, to the extent it overlapped with the spiritual, was opposed to the carnal. Bernard of Clairvaux, for example, who wrote a series of sermons on the Song of Songs in which he imagined kissing Christ on the mouth and something even more holy, “that most intimate kiss of all, a mystery of supreme generosity and ineffable sweetness,” would have wanted to make a sharp distinction between his spiritual understanding of this action and a carnal understanding that would equate it with erotic activity between men, or between men and women.
It seems to me that Weir wants to be a ‘popular’ historian and so she chooses to support the views that will offer her ample chances for scandal. Because of that letter and of a poem called The Most Pleasant Song of Lady Bessy (which is a largely fictionalised account of Elizabeth of York’s efforts to woo support to Henry Tudor before Bosworth) she claims that Elizabeth was an ambitious, I’ll-do-what-it-takes-to-be-queen type of woman and worse, that she only became demure and gentle and the Elizabeth of York that is traditionally known in history after she fell in love with Henry VII. How, you ask me? Because Henry played on her affections to make her what he wanted her to be. And on what grounds does she make that claim? None. She just says that in her biography as if it’s something backed by sources and not her own opinion. It’s beyond absurd, really.
So that’s why I don’t take Alison Weir as a serious historian, but from what I’ve seen many others here don’t either. I hope this answer helped you x

How the Alphabet Got Its Order, Malcolm X and Other New Books to Read
Tumblr media
Throughout history, alphabetical order has acted as an unsung agent of democratization, providing an organizational framework based not on social hierarchies, but an easily memorized string of letters. As historian Judith Flanders argues in A Place for Everything: The Curious History of Alphabetical Order, “The religious no longer automatically took precedence over the secular, kings over subjects, or man over animals.”
In today’s Western world, the A-B-Cs are as self-evident as 1-2-3. But the adoption of an ordered Latin alphabet (the system used in most European and English languages) was far from straightforward. In fact, writes Flanders in the “first-ever history of alphabetization,” the protracted path toward alphabetical order spans millennia, involving such diverse entities and individuals as the Library of Alexandria, philosopher John Locke and George Washington.
The latest installment in our series highlighting new book releases, which launched in late March to support authors whose works have been overshadowed amid the Covid-19 pandemic, explores the history of alphabetical order, the woman behind Wolf Hall, the life of Malcolm X, secrets of urban design and chance’s role in shaping the world.
Representing the fields of history, science, arts and culture, innovation, and travel, selections represent texts that piqued our curiosity with their new approaches to oft-discussed topics, elevation of overlooked stories and artful prose. We’ve linked to Amazon for your convenience, but be sure to check with your local bookstore to see if it supports social distancing-appropriate delivery or pickup measures, too.
A Place for Everything: The Curious History of Alphabetical Order by Judith Flanders
Tumblr media
The invention of the alphabet dates to some 4,000 years ago, when merchants and mercenaries in Egypt’s Western Desert developed a phonetic system of symbols that could be rearranged into words. “Just as money was a stand-in for value,” notes Joe Moran in the Guardian’s review of A Place for Everything, “so the alphabet was a stand-in for meaning, separating words into letters for ease of reordering” and allowing humans “to shape whole universes of meaning out of a small number of letters.”
Derived from an array of earlier alphabetic systems, the Latin alphabet gained traction across the ancient world following its invention in the seventh century B.C. But a widely accepted alphabetical order remained elusive. As Chris Allnut points out for the Financial Times, Galen, the second-century A.D, Greek physician, took a subjective approach in his On the Properties of Food, organizing listings by general category and level of nourishment. The Library of Alexandria, meanwhile, used first-letter alphabetical order to organize certain scrolls, but “this was just one system among many,” according to Flanders. Later, medieval monks elevated the sacred over the profane; one European abbot wrote his English dictionary in descending order, beginning with angels, the sun and moon, and the Earth and the sea and concluding with weapons, metals and gems, per the Times’ Dan Jones.
The rise of the printing press in the mid-15th century furthered the cause of alphabetization by sparking an unprecedented explosion in the dissemination of information. Still, widespread adoption of alphabetical order didn’t simply follow “hard on the heels of printing,” according to Flanders. Instead, she writes, “[T]he reality was less tidy,” owing much to government bureaucracy, librarians and an array of fascinating historical figures.
A Place for Everything is peppered with tales of such individuals. Among others, the list of alphabetical order’s early proponents (or detractors) includes diarist Samuel Pepys; poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge; George Washington, who kept his records in an “alphabetted” ledger; and 13th-century Dominican monk John of Genoa, who prefaced his alphabetized Latin dictionary with a note stating, “I have devised this order at the cost of great effort and strenuous application. … I beg of you, therefore, good reader, do not scorn this great labor of mine and this order as something worthless.”
Mantel Pieces: Royal Bodies and Other Writing From the London Review of Books by Hilary Mantel
Tumblr media
In March, Hilary Mantel concluded her much-lauded trilogy on statesman Thomas Cromwell with The Mirror & the Light, which follows the last four years of the Tudor minister’s life. Her next work—a collection of 20 essays previously published in the London Review of Books—expands the universe inhabited by Cromwell, deftly detailing Tudor figures like Anne Boleyn’s infamous sister-in-law, Jane; Henry VIII’s best friend, Charles Brandon; and 67-year-old noblewoman Margaret Pole, who was brutally executed on an increasingly paranoid Henry’s orders.
Mantel Pieces also moves beyond 16th-century England: “Royal Bodies,” a polarizing 2013 essay that employed Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, in its broader discussion of how the media, royal family and public treat female royals, appears, as do meditations on Madonna (the pop icon), the Madonna (or Virgin Mary), Britain’s “last witch” and a pair of 10-year-old’s headline-grabbing 1993 murder of 2-year-old James Bulger.
The author herself—the only two-time woman winner of the United Kingdom’s highest literary award, the Booker Prize—takes center stage in several personal essays. Tackling events including her first meeting with her stepfather, a showdown with a circus strongman and the aftermath of a major surgery, Mantel demonstrates that “[a]s a memoirist, [she] is without parallel,” per Frances Wilson of the Telegraph.
As Wilson concludes, “It is only when her essays are laid out like this that we can see the inside of Mantel’s huge head, bulging with knowledge and a million connections.”
The Dead Are Arising: The Life of Malcolm X by Les and Tamara Payne
Tumblr media
When Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Les Payne died of a heart attack in 2018, his daughter, Tamara, stepped in to complete his unfinished biography of Malcolm X. Two years later, the 500-page tome is garnering an array of accolades, including a spot on the 2020 National Book Awards shortlist.
The elder Payne started researching the civil rights leader in 1990. Over the next 28 years, he conducted hundreds of interviews with Malcolm’s friends, family, acquaintances, allies and enemies, tirelessly working to tease out the truth behind what he described as the much-mythologized figure’s journey “from street criminal to devoted moralist and revolutionary.”
The Dead Are Arising traces Malcolm’s childhood in Nebraska, brushes with the law as a teenager in Michigan, time as a petty criminal in Boston and Harlem, emergence as a black nationalist leader of the Nation of Islam, and 1965 assassination. The result, writes Publishers Weekly in its review, is a “richly detailed account” that paints “an extraordinary and essential portrait of the man behind the icon.”
The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design by Roman Mars and Kurt Kohlstedt
Tumblr media
Based on the hit podcast “99% Invisible,” this illustrated field guide demystifies urban design, addressing “mysteries that most of us have never considered,” writes Kenneth T. Jackson for the New York Times. Why are manhole covers round? Why are revolving doors often sandwiched between traditional ones? What do the symbols painted on sidewalks and roads mean? And why are some public spaces so intentionally “hostile”?
Co-written by host Roman Mars and “99% Invisible” contributor Kurt Kohlstedt, The 99% Invisible City is “an ideal companion for city buffs, who’ll come away seeing the streets in an entirely different light,” according to Kirkus. Case studies range from metal fire escapes to fake facades, New York City’s Holland Tunnel, the CenturyLink Building in Minneapolis, modern elevators and utility codes, all of which are employed to illustrate broader points about inconspicuous and conspicuous design, geographic delineations versus designations, and the influence of government regulations on city landscapes, among other topics.
The authors’ enthusiasm for their subject is apparent in both the book’s wide-ranging scope and attention to detail. As Mars and Kohlstedt write in the introduction, “So much of the conversation about design centers on beauty, but the more fascinating stories of the built world are about problem-solving, historical constraints, and human drama.”
A Series of Fortunate Events: Chance and the Making of the Planet, Life, and You by Sean B. Carroll
Tumblr media
Biologist Sean B. Carroll opens his latest book, A Series of Fortunate Events, with an anecdote about North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il, who claimed to have scored five holes-in-one the very first time he played a round of golf. North Korea’s propensity for propaganda, coupled with the fact that golf champion Tiger Woods has scored just three holes-in-one in the entirety of his two-decade professional career, casts immediate doubts on Jong-Il’s account. But the scale of the lie is made all the more evident by Carroll’s employment of hard facts: As he points out, the chances of an amateur golfer achieving four holes-in-one are around 1 in 24 quadrillion—or 24 followed by 15 zeros.
In this case, the odds are against Jong-Il. But A Series of Fortunate Events demonstrates that similarly unlikely occurrences shape individual lives and the fate of the universe alike. “[B]reezy, anecdotal, informative and amusing,” notes the Wall Street Journal’s Andrew Crumey, Carroll’s work renders hefty topics accessible, exploring the perfect storm of events responsible for evolution, the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs and every living person’s conception. (In the scientist’s words, “it’s time to think about your parents’ gonads, and the moment you were conceived.”)
Acknowledging the “razor-thin line” between life and death or existence and extinction may seem like a terrifying prospect. But doing so can also be liberating.
“Look around you at all the beauty, complexity and variety of life,” writes Carroll. “We live in a world of mistakes, governed by chance.”

Right. Historical fiction rant.
I’m getting really tired of the Spunky Anachronistic Feminist Heroine trope in a lot of these historical fiction books. Like, I get why it keeps happening? But I don’t like it. It’s an easy way out. It’s a cheap shot.
Now, have there been rebellious women in history? Abso-fucking-lutely. The problem is when these fictional “rebellious women” characters start spouting forth concepts and even terminology that wasn’t around at that time. There may have been similar concepts or the beginnings of these things, but, like, no one in 1881 was talking like your main character, author-who-shall-remain-nameless. “That sort of thing doesn’t enter my social sphere.” Are you fucking kidding me?
Some of the problem, I think, comes from authors forgetting that people (and by extension, characters) are the products of their culture Yes, even you, Author. You, too, are the product of your culture. In the case of, say, late Victorian England, the culture can seem overwhelmingly oppressive to late 20th and early 21st century readers. But for the people of the era, it was Just Life.
Forget that it was Just Life, and you start having characters who are essentially reading from a rulebook of Proper Behavior For The Era. That is, there’s no motivation behind their disapproval of Character X’s behavior in Y situation. It’s just that it’s “improper.” And that’s hollow as all fuck. Maybe it emphasizes the sense of oppression that the author wants to convey to the readers (and aren’t we glad that spunky feminist heroine has now married the Only Good Man Who Understands Her and will let her Truly Express Herself at the end of the book?) but it makes the characters, well, cardboard and straw. There’s nothing there. It’s just that there’s a set of rules that they have to adhere to--have to, or else...what? There’s not even a sense of consequences in some of these novels. It’s just “it would be improper!” Would the character or family be shunned? Fined? Exiled? Rendered destitute? Executed? I mean, what’s the threat and reward behind all these expectations of behavior?
Think (for one fuckin’ second) about what would be shocking or improper today. What are the consequences of that action? Or, think about what was shocking or improper 20 or 30 years ago. What were the consequences of that action? Now follow that line as far back as you need to for your writing.
Or, if it help, think about what Miss Manners says about etiquette: it’s not about testing someone to see if they know which fork to use, it’s about making sure everyone in a situation feels comfortable and has a kind of shared understanding of their roles and what’s expected of them.
Also, read Jane Austen. I think we can all pretty much agree that the Bennett sisters are interesting characters existing within their era and culture. Also, Jane Eyre (more than Wuthering Heights, which I like better, but...): an interesting character who is a very unreliable narrator (like whoa) and who exists within her era and culture.
Seriously: read more. Read outside your “genre.” Read everything. Read more literature of the era--don’t just research the history of the era so you can namedrop Gladstone and Disraeli (I’m not impressed; I took history classes too okay?), but actually read books written in that era or by people who lived in that era. Get a feel for the actuality of an era, not just your perceptions of the era.
Want to see how historical fiction can work and work well? Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel have to be two of the most impressive recent historical fiction novels I’ve ever read. It’s the era of Henry VIII while he’s trying to marry Anne Boleyn, but damn, dem inner workings and motivations.
