IkeLive 2nd Anniversary Story — Chapter 01
[Henri]

read this before interacting with my posts
The summer breeze was blowing in the Sakuragi’s garden.
Evan, the resident dog, went to a shady spot underneath a tree to lie down and get comfortable.
MC: Hmmm.
Sitting next to him, I was working on my next original song.
I had yet to decide who to give the song to, but I felt that I needed to express in this song the feelings of celebrating Own The Night’s anniversary, so I put all of my focus on composing it.
(Maybe I should write the lyrics first…)
I came out to sit in the garden because I needed a mental break, but my eyes soon grew weary. Perhaps it was because the sun was blinding, or I had been thinking too hard.
(I feel like I’m going to get a heat stroke.)
My eyes were downcast as I felt my sweat trickling down my face.
MC: Kyaaa
I shuddered when a cold hand suddenly touched the nape of my neck that was exposed because I had tied my hair up.
???: That reaction was adorable.
MC: Henri!?
I turned around to see Henri grinning as he looked into my face.
Henri: Yup, it’s me. Here, have this, MC.
MC: This is… ice cream?
Henri: Yeah. Homemade by Koki, it feels refreshing to eat because it's cold.
I received the ice cream and could feel its coldness in my hand, and smell the sweet aroma.
MC: Wow, it looks yummy. What flavor is it?
Henri: Hmmm…
Henri took his ice cream out of his mouth and thought for a moment before flashing me a flirty smile.
Henri: I think you’ll know once you give me a kiss. Come on.
Henri laughed mischievously and brought his face so close to mine that our lips nearly met.
MC: W-What? Here?
We were in the Sakuragi’s garden. Everyone lived there, and Evan was snoozing away next to me.
Henri: Hahaha just kidding. Sorry for making your face so red.
MC: … Again…
(He’s always so quick to pull such jokes on me.)
I frowned and finally tasted Koki’s homemade ice cream — it was peach flavored.
MC: Mm… it's cold, sweet, and really yummy.
The breeze in the garden felt cooler than before, maybe it was because of the ice cream.
(Ah… this feels great.)
As I looked up and felt the breeze in my hair that was slightly drenched in sweat, Henri laid down on the grass and asked me while looking at the sky.
Henri: So how’s it going? You needed a mental break?
MC: Hm?
(A mental break.)
I glanced down at Henri without much thought and our eyes met.
Henri: You’re working on a new song, right? Take it easy, don’t rush yourself.
(... I see…)
(Henri came to look for me because he knew I was fretting over the song.)
Henri turned to his side and reached his hand up to gently brush away my sweaty hair that was sticking to my face.
Henri: Don’t push yourself too hard… okay?
His fingers were a little cold because of the ice cream he was holding, but that wasn't the only thing I noticed about them.
(Huh? Are those…)
MC: Henri, can you… show me your fingers?
Henri: My fingers? Sure, as you wish.
Despite his smile, Henri’s fingers were stiff from practicing too much on his bass guitar.
MC: This shows that you’ve been working hard.
Henri: Um— but it’s not enough. Take Kanade for example, he’s already so seasoned that his fingers don't even turn stiff.
Henri tried to laugh it off, but I knew.
Every night, even after a long day at work as an employee at a trading company, Henri would be practicing in the music room.
He worked hard in secret, but never failed to acknowledge other people’s efforts and give them his utmost support.
— That’s one of Henri’s great points.
MC: Thanks, Henri. You too, don’t overwork yourself… alright?
Henri: …
Henri’s eyes widened in surprise at my words, then he burst out laughing.
Henri: Thanks.
Before I realized it, I found myself touching Henri’s fingers, and he squeezed my hand in response.
And so — thanks to Henri, whose smile was bright like sunshine, I finally came up with satisfactory lyrics.
But my song wasn't complete yet.
Kanade: I shall invite you to my castle.
MC: Huh?
The unexpected comment from Kanade helped me in the next part of making my new song.

Listed: Magic Tuber String Band
Tumblr media
The core of the Magic Tuber String Band consists of Courtney Werner on fiddle, Evan Morgan on guitar and banjo and both on occasional vocals and other acoustic instruments. Their approach involves combining traditional Appalachian instrumentation with the experimentalism of composers such as Henry Flynt, Harry Parch, and Pauline Oliveros. Field recordings and drones add texture to many of their tracks, and Werner and Morgan as well as their collaborators are formidable players. The arrangements are complex but not cluttered, with tunes often veering in unexpected directions. In his review for Dusted, Jim Marks described the band’s latest, Needlefall, as “the most satisfying in a five-year run of outstanding albums.”
Evan Morgan
Alan Clarke — Penda's Fen
youtube
I found out about this film (made for a BBC anthology series) from Rob Young’s book on British folk, Electric Eden. It is one of those immediately captivating films, almost perfectly made (and visually reminiscent of Tarkovsky's Nostalghia at times). The whole film builds towards a view of folk tradition and local history as an antidote to reactionary nationalism, all within the space of a coming-of-age story. We watched this for the first time recently and coincidentally were just asked to play before a screening of the film in Brattleboro this coming August for Epsilon Spires.
Alice Rohrwacher — La chimera
youtube
Alice Rohrwacher is really homing in on a kind of filmmaking that is related to the dialects of those films from the past we now think of as great films — but it is also something entirely her own. It's patient but also immediately spellbinding which feels like a rare quality these days. La chimera picks up the theme of a modern relationship to old ways that points towards communal culture as a way out of an increasingly privatized world. But it is also a lot more than that. It's both an obvious folktale and a dense dream. Would make a great double feature with Penda's Fen.
Mario Vargas Llosa — The War of the End of the World
Tumblr media
I was completely blown away by this novel. I found it at a used bookstore last summer and waited until December to pick it up because of its intimidating length. It is an onslaught of character portraits, nearly everyone vividly rendered and memorable despite the book’s length and the pace of events, time rolling back, jumping ahead, and standing still. The story of the War of Canudos, one of a heavily armed state attacking the most disenfranchised members of its land in the name of democracy, makes TWOTEOTW a very timely read.
Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band — Dancing on the Edge
Easily my most listened to record of 2023 and still on heavy rotation on into 2024. We got to see Ryan & the Roadhouse Band play this material live in Athens a few weeks ago which was absolutely transcendent.
John Francis Flynn — Look Over the Wall, See the Sky
We have been living in Augusta, GA since December of last year and there’s something about this record that really clicks with the architecture and layout of the city. I go for walks with my dog every day on a trail that runs between the canal and the Savannah river. To the south, the trail leads towards a long-abandoned, late 19th-century textile mill; to the north, past the hidden ruins of an old fish camp squat and the (often) roaring stone headgates. This record builds a sense of place and that place is intended to be Dublin. But its transposable nature hints at a deep connection between certain places that have not entirely lost visible monuments to their past industry and daily life. I especially like the version on here of Ewan MacColl's “Dirty Old Town.”
Courtney Werner
Chaz Knapp and Mariel Roberts — Setting Fire to These Dark Times
Chaz Knapp invited me to improvise with him throughout the Ozarks in 2022 using fiddle, dulcimer, voice, tape loops and natural sounds. I’m inspired by his attention to space and the sound of landscapes. He and cellist Mariel Roberts released this incredible album in 2023.
Tatiana Hargreaves — Soledad
I saw Tatiana perform the Soledad compositions at a residency in Durham, NC in 2018 and it was one of the most influential live music experiences of my life. They blend elements of old-time and contemporary classical styles with extended techniques to create captivating solo fiddle pieces that inspired me to want to compose myself.
Rafael Toral — Spectral Evolution
One of my favorite albums of this year so far.
Zoh Amba — Bhakti
An incredible record full of life and heart.
Evan Parker — Evan Parker with Birds
One of my favorite examples of pushing an instrument to be an animal, and duetting with natural sounds.

You like to think that Mickey Henry entered your life when you needed him most...
You were restless, life wasn’t exciting for you anymore. Your latest breakup was the cherry on top, so that afternoon you used up all your time off from work and booked a one way ticket to visit some relatives of yours in Greece. Stepping off the plane you inhaled happily, nothing beats the feeling of being in a new environment.
Dragging your luggage and guitar case to the curb, you hailed a cab to your new apartment that you’ll be staying in for the next month. Paying the cab driver, you unload your luggage and put it on the step to your apartment.
Just as you were about to open the door to the foyer area, you heard a woman yell out to you. “O xáderfós mou!” (My cousin!) you were suddenly tackled to the ground by who you assumed was your cousin Despina. “Despina!” you yelled hugging her back, it had been years since you had seen one another.
“Pós eísai?” (how are you?) your cousin asked as you stood up and dusted your shorts off. “Kaló kai esý?” (good and you?), you picked up your luggage before unlocking the door to your apartment block and gesturing for Despina to enter. Your cousin looked up at the building and let out a low whistle. “What is it?” you asked, eyebrows furrowed in concern before she looked at you and grinned. “My friend Effie told me that this cute dj lives in this apartment block, you might find summer love this holiday”. Rolling your eyes you nudge Despina further into the foyer and up the stairs “I came here to unwind, not have boy trouble…”
“As Selena Gomez once said… the heart wants what it wants”. She yelled out into the stairway causing an echo. You turn to her and shush her, it was your first day here and the last thing you wanted was for your neighbours to hate you. In retaliation, Despina stuck her tongue out at you and cupped her hands around her mouth yelling “My cousin is single and ready to mingle!” A melodic laugh of a man upstairs startled you, you rush to your door and quickly try to get the door open.
Tumblr media
“So, my friend is hosting a party tonight and the pre-entertainment bailed. Since you’re here, I might’ve told him you could fill in…” Your cousin was laid lazily across the lounge as you unpacked what you brought with you.
“Yeah sure… Do you want some food? I could go for some pastitio”, you continued to unpack your suitcases, not fully listening to your cousin. “So you’ll do it! Thank you!” Despina jumped from the couch and tackled you into a hug “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! A new outfit is on me!” it suddenly dawned on you that you misheard what your cousin said. “A new what?”
Your cousin quickly grabbed her shoes and slipped them on before yelling, “Lunch time!” and rushing out of your apartment. You sighed, rolling your eyes, “Food, my number one weakness.” grabbing your purse you locked the door behind you.
Tumblr media
“Se agapó…” (I love you).
You finished your song and smiled at the party guests as they applauded you. It was the first time you had sung in front of a crowd in years and you felt fantastic. It might also have to do with the beautiful red bodycon dress that hugged you in all the right places, you made a mental note to thank your cousin again for buying it for you.
You felt radiant, and the guests at the party thought so too.
“Tha epistrépso sta pénte. Sas efcharistó!” (I'll be back in five. Thank you!) you smiled at the crowd and moved to the bar to get a drink. “You were amazing!” Despina yelled, tackling you into a hug and kissing your cheek. She was obviously drunk.
As the bartender placed a shot in front of you, Despina quickly lifted and downed it before you could move. Laughing, you gestured to the bardenter for some ouzo and coke instead. Turning back to check on your drunk cousin.m, you found her hugging two guys and dragging them over to you.
“Y/n, meet my friend Argyris and his friend Mickey. Mickey is an American!” she squealed, pinching his cheek which lead to him wincing. You smiled at Argyris who raised his glass up in salut, before he turned to the other man, Mickey who stood there awkwardly and elbowed him. Argyris rolled his eyes and began talking on behalf of Mickey who was struggling to form words.
“Yasu, Y/n. You were wonderful up there. Did you know Mickey loves music too?” an obvious ploy to get Mickey to actually talk to you. Realising that this was his cue, Mickey smiled widely, and you swear you stopped breathing for a second.
Shaking your head trying to focus, you sighed thankfully as the bartender tapped you on the shoulder and handed you your drink. Sipping on it quickly, you cleared your throat before smiling at Mickey, “That’s so cool, do you play an instrument or something?”
Mickey beamed happily and lifted up a bag in his right hand which you had only just noticed. “I’m a DJ, I’m actually up after you’ve finished your set.” Mickey turned and smiled gratefully at your cousin, who in response turned to you and winked before dragging Argyris away. “Not very subtle are they?” you asked Mickey who in response laughed. “Subtlety isn’t really their thing...” he leaned over you to grab the bartender’s attention, “I’ll have the same as her.” he pointed to the drink in your hand before placing his bag on the bar and turning back to you. “Argyris is right though, you were amazing up there! Do you sing full time?”
Your cheeks flushed at the compliment. You were never good at taking compliments— let alone one from a handsome man. “No, I’m actually a teacher. It’s a nice hobby, but that’s all it is… it’s hard to make a living from singing. Everyone wants to make it big, but not everyone does.” Mickey listens to you intensely, you catch a glimpse of what you assume to be sympathy flicker in his eyes before the bartender interrupts with Mickey’s drink. You mentally reminded yourself to tip the bartender extra before you leave.
“That’s probably my cue to get back out there, Mickey. It was nice talking to you.” Feeling bold, you lean over and kiss his cheek. He slipped an arm around your waist before you could move away and whispered in your ear “Break a leg!”, kissing your cheek in return, his lips lingering on your cheek a bit longer than yours did.
Whilst you finished your set, your eyes kept searching the crowd for Mickey’s blue ones. You tried to focus your attention on Despina who was dancing happily with Argyris, but like a magnet your eyes kept landing on the mysteriously awkward yet charming man. In your mind you knew that there was more to him than meets the eyes and that scares you— this trip was meant to help you relax and do some soul searching. But maybe the soul you were searching for wasn’t your own…
Tumblr media
You decided to stay to watch Mickey’s set, he was talented that’s for sure. You felt your body swaying with the music, deciding to let loose you began to dance to the music.
You can’t remember the last time you felt so free, it was incredible. You mustered the courage to go up to Mickey and tap him on the shoulder. Turning to look at you, Mickey’s expression changed from concentration to joy, as he pulled his earphones to rest on his neck. “You’re incredible!” you yell over the music, Mickey scrunches his nose happily “Really?” you nod your head enthusiastically and stick your thumbs up, this leads to him pulling you closer to him and putting his headphones over your ears. Your eyes widened, the music was even better with his headphones on.
The blue eyed man placed his hand out to you, looking confused you furrowed your eyebrows at him only for him to nod his head in response, a gesture which said ‘it’s okay, you can trust me’.
Placing your hand in his, Mickey moved behind you, grabbing your hands in his and placing them on the mixing board. Him doing all the work, but using your hands to show you how everything works. “This is so cool!” you tell him, but it comes out as a yell muffled by the earphones, you lean your head on his shoulder and look up at him smiling only to find him already staring at you, a twinkle of happiness in his eyes. He placed a soft kiss on your temple before letting go of you and taking over again.
You stood there shocked before he leaned closer again to talk over the music “Will you wait for me after the set is done? It’s nearly time for the next guy to take over.” You looked at him, tonight felt like a dream come true… but you knew that when something was too good to be true it usually was.
“Jet lag is killing me, I was probably gonna go now...” You saw the smile on Mickey’s face falter for a split second before it returned. “Well can I at least get your number?” before you could open your mouth to make up an excuse, you realised that you didn’t have your purse. You had left it with Despina to look after while you were singing. Looking frantically around the room you couldn’t spot your cousin or Argyris. You looked back at Mickey who looked concerned “I left my purse with Despina, but I can’t see her.”
“Oh, Argyris told me they were leaving about 15 minutes ago…” Mickey placed a hand over his eyes and sighed. Panic began to flood through your mind as you realised that meant you didn’t have the keys to your apartment either.
“Fuck…” you muttered, squatting down to the ground and running a hand through your hair. Mickey leant down and gently lifted you up by your forearm. “This is the last song, just give me a second to pack up and I’ll help you home.” You shook your head and smiled weakly at him but he wouldn’t take no for an answer “I’ll feel much better if you let me take you home.”
Tumblr media
To say that you weren’t even the slightest bit giddy as you held on tightly to Mickey as he drove you back to your apartment, would be a complete utter lie. You tried to concentrate on giving him directions, but you couldn’t get past how well toned this man was.
“Well isn’t this fate…” Mickey spoke happily as you parked in front of the building. “Thank you, Mickey!” You handed him the helmet before jumping of the motorbike and rushing to the door, you pressed the buzzer to your building hoping that Despina decided to crash at yours for the night, but there was no response.
You heard footsteps behind you, turning you see Mickey walking towards you. “It’s okay, Mickey. I’ll figure something out, you head home it’s-” before you could finish your sentence, Mickey had pulled his keys out and opened the door to the building “-late…” you looked at Mickey wide eyed, but all he did was smirk in response.
“You come here often?” a dumb question on your behalf but to be fair you were becoming delirious from the lack of sleep. Mickey looked at you and laughed “Well considering I live here, yeah…” he pushed the door open and ushered you up the stairs in front of what you were guessing to be his apartment, which just happened to be right next door to your apartment.
You walked a couple steps to your door and jiggled the handle to see if it would magically unlock. Mickey was smug as he unlocked his door and leant against the doorframe. “Like I was saying, fate. This is my apartment block too. You can crash at mine for the night.” defeated you nodded your head and entered his apartment.
You entered the apartment and it seemed a little old fashion for someone so young. Noticing your glances at the doilies that were placed carefully around the room, Mickey pointed over to a picture of a young boy “This place was left to Argyris, and he lets me live here.” you nodded your head and flopped onto the comfy looking couch. “Thanks for letting me stay here, I’ll be up early and out of your hair.” Mickey left the room and came back handing your an oversized shirt “I thought you might like to change out of your dress… stay as long as you need. You can sleep in my bed, I can take the couch.” you shook your head, Mickey had already done so much for you, the least you could do was let him sleep in his own bed.
“Thank you, but I can take the couch. I appreciate everything you’ve done tonight. I’ll repay you I swear.” Mickey sat down next to you and hugged you before getting up again “Your company is more than enough… Goodnight.”
“Goodnight…” you whispered back before moving to the bathroom to get changed, making your way back to the couch you laid down and sighed. This was bad, you have been in Greece for less than 24 hours and you were already catching feelings. Forcing yourself to close your eyes and sleep, you drifted off feeling warm and safe, engulfed by the smell of Mickey’s cologne.
to be continued...

Astrophilia
Astrophilia- (noun) Love of and/or obsession with planets, stars, and outer space.
Pairing: Peter Parker x Reader
Masterlist
Requests are CLOSED
Tumblr media
At age fourteen, you didn’t exactly have much on your plate. It was the summer before high school and your days mostly consisted of the same things: Subways rides to the “dangerous” parts of New York (or as far as Aunt May allowed) and trips to random streets you couldn’t find on a map. Some days were spent inside playing Mario Kart until your thumbs hated you, and some days were spent outdoors until the sun had fully set and your parents were just about ready to kill you for being out so late. No matter what you were doing, you days were spent with your best friend Peter Parker.
You’d been friends since preschool and being apart was not something either of you enjoyed. Today was no different. You were hanging out in Peters room, just three days before high school was going to start.
It was a slow Sunday. You were just sitting on Peters bed, joking around like always. It's been that way for years, Peter and Y/n, the dynamic duo. But you kinda always liked him a little more than a friend. You couldn't help it. Peter was sweet, kind, adorable, respectful, and treated you like royalty. You didn’t know when the platonic moments in your friendship began to feel romantic, but once you noticed, it was all you thought about.
“Do you think the people will be nice?” You asked Peter as you curled into on of his pillows. Peter joined you on the bed and shrugged.
“I’m sure they’ll be nice enough.” He said.
“Do you think the boys will be nice?” You asked the real question that was on your mind.
Peter was quiet for a minute and shifted his position.
“I don’t know.” He shrugged and kept his eyes down. “Maybe?”
You sat up on your elbow and faced him.
“Do you think they’ll like me?” You asked him awkwardly. Sometimes, having a boy best friend made conversations like these harder than they needed to be.
“The boys?” Peter squeaked, feeling a weird feeling in his tummy at your sudden interest in guys.
“Yeah.” You said shyly.
“Of course they will.” Peter stated. “Why wouldn’t they?”
“I’m kinda, I don’t know, nerdy.” You shrugged.
“You think you’re nerdy?” Peter asked. “I wear science pun T shirts and my aunt still packs my lunches.”
“Yeah, but what about the whole space thing?” You asked him. You were a bit of a space geek, something Peter adored about you.
“Y/n, you’re a genius when it comes to knowing about space. That doesn’t make you a nerd. That makes you super cool.” Peter assured you. He hated when you felt insecure about your intelligence. You were the smartest person he knew, and he loved that.
“I’m glad you think so, but I doubt high school boys will find my geekiness ‘super cool’.” You said meekly.
“What kind of guys are you into anyway?” Peter pretended to just think of the question, when he’d really been thinking about it for months. You laughed a little to yourself, know long the kind of guys you were into were Peter.
“I don’t know. Nice ones? I don’t really think about it. As long as he’s kind and can make me laugh, I’ll take him.” You shrugged with a small smile. “And if he knows a thing or two about space, that’d be nice too.”
“You’re telling me all a guy has to be is kind, funny, know a little something about space to be with a girl like you?” Peter asked in disbelief. “There’s gotta be something else, something you look for.”
“A girl like me?” You asked curiously.
“Yeah, uh, I don’t know.” Peter scratched the back of his neck. “It was a dumb question. Forget I asked.”
“Okay.” You watched Peter curiously for a moment before looking away. “And I like musicians, by the way.” You blurted. “That’s the thing I look for. Especially the guitar.”
You and Peter dropped the topic and went on as usual.
The first day of school came and went. When the sun set and you finished your homework, you took Peter to the roof to stargaze like you always did. You sat between Peters legs against the chimney and tilted your chins towards the sky.
“Wow.” You breathed.
“The stars are really showing off tonight, aren’t they? Putting on a show for us.” Peter said softly as he watched your reaction to the sky.
“I could look at the sky for hours.” You sighed and held onto Peters arm, which were wrapped around your shoulders.
“They seem so close. Just a few miles from where we are.” Peter commented.
“Well the closest star to Earth is Proxima Centauri. It’s just 4.2 light-years away.” You absentmindedly told Peter a fact about space. You missed the fond smile he gave you as he found himself wanting to know more.
“And the furthest?” He asked.
“The furthest star right now is 100 million light years away. It’s in the M100 galaxy of the Virgo Cluster.” You said like it was common knowledge. Peters eyes gleamed with an inexplicably fondness for your intelligence.
“How many do you think there are? A million?” He asked, playing dumb now to coax more facts out of you.
“About 200 to 400 billion, and about a trillion in the Milky Way.” You answered, suddenly becoming self conscious of your words. “Uh, I’m guessing.”
“Seems like a pretty good guess to me.” Peter shrugged against your body.
“Sorry. I’m being weird. I’ll stop.” You shifted awkwardly and swallowed.
“You’re not being weird.” Peter said defensively. “Tell me about them.”
“What?” You looked over your shoulder at him.
“The stars. Tell me about them. I want to hear everything you know.” Peter smiled sheepishly.
“No you don’t. It’s boring.” You shook your head.
“Not to me.” Peter promised. A smile tugged onto your lips and you turned back towards the sky.
“So, space is infinite, obviously.” You began. “You got your planets, galaxies, moons, nebulas, and of course, stars. My favorite are stars.”
“Me too.” Peter held you closer and rested his chin on your hair as he listened.
“Stars are luminous spheres made of plasma-“
“Plasma?” Peter asked.
“It’s superheated gas threaded with a magnetic field.” You answered. Stars are mostly made of hydrogen, which they fuse in their cores.”
“Got it.” Peter nodded as if he understood a word you said. His sudden interest encouraged you to keep going.
“That process releases energy, which pushes against the weight of the outer layers of the star and stabilizes it. The energy is also released as heat and light, which radiates out to space.” You continued.
“Amazing.” Peter stared at your profile. The way your face lit up when talking about something you loved made Peters heart melt. He could listen to you all night.
“I know, right?” You laughed happily, making Peter grin. “And did you know stars were some of the first objects to form in the early stages of the universe? We’re looking at the same stars dinosaurs, Galileo, and King Henry have looked at. Isn’t that incredible to think about? The same sun that warms our skin has shown on Alice Paul and Stan Lee. That’s why I love space so much.”
“I didn’t know that.” Peter said gently.
“Because people don’t take the time to learn about it.” You sighed in disappointment. “I mean, they teach us about the phases of the moon and whatnot, but they don’t tell us about the basic groundwork of the universe. Like, have you ever been taught how a star is formed?”
“No. Could you tell me?” Peter asked gently.
“Well, as long as you’re asking.” You smiled sheepishly to hide your excitement. “So, star formation happens in clouds of interstellar gas and dust called “nebulae”, right? The star starts to form when the cloud is nudged into a spinning motion, usually by a shock wave from a nearby supernova explosion or something. Clumps begin to form, and they get hotter and hotter as they gain more mass. When the temperature inside reaches 10 million degrees Celsius a star is born.” You recited. You looked over at Peter and noticed that he was dead silent, just staring at you. Your cheeks heated up when Peter didn’t say anything, and you got quiet. “Sorry. I’m rambling.”
“No, it’s okay.” Peter snapped out of his awe and assured you. “Keep going.”
“Do you really want to hear about stars?” You asked suspiciously.
“No, but I like to hear you talk.” Peter admitted.
"I still can't believe Liz turned you down.” You changed the subject to something more Peters speed. He had asked Liz Allen to the back to school party at Flash’s house and she promptly turned him down. “She's crazy."
You felt Peter shrug against you again and you wondered if you should’ve kept your mouth shut.
"It’s whatever. I didn’t really like her anyway.” Peter answered honestly.
"I know, but still. Who in their right mind would turn you down? She’s lucky you even looked her way.” You said, not even realizing what your words meant to Peter. He felt it too, that shift from platonic to romantic. He was just glad you weren’t facing him and couldn’t see his blush.
“You’re just saying that.” He replied.
“No, I’m not.” You said sincerely. “You're so nice to everyone and so smart. And oh my God, the funniest guy in the world. And not to mention, cute as hell.”
Peters body suddenly felt warm against yours and you wondered if he was blushing.
(Yes, he was)
"Nowhere near as cute as you." He said in a shy voice. You looked back at him gave him a playful shove.
"Oh, shut up. No I'm not." You looked back at the sky to keep yourself from smiling as Peter shook his head.
"You should see the way guys look at you. They practically drool." He muttered, and you could hear a tinge of jealousy in his voice.
"Oh, please. No guys stare at me.” You dismissed. “Why would they? I'm nothing special."
Peter finally looked at you and met your eyes.
"Do you really not know you're beautiful?" He asked, confusion in his voice.
"What?” You asked quietly.
"You know you're beautiful, right Y/n?" Peter sat up a little and sounded serious. Unsure of what to say, you didn’t answer and just chewed your lips.
"Did you really not know that?” Peter asked again.
You shook you head and Peter laughed in disbelief.
"I'm not beautiful, Peter. Not like Liz, anyway. Not even close." You said softly, making Peter look at you like you were crazy.
"Yes you are, Y/n.” Peter said firmly. “Inside and out. I can't believe no ones ever told you."
“Why does it matter?” You shrugged.
“Look up.” Peter said suddenly, and you did.
“You see those stars? All 200 to 400 billion of them?” He asked and you nodded. “You are more beautiful than every single one of them. Even the trillion in the Milky Way. And you’re wrong. The closest star isn’t 4.2 light years away. She’s sitting right next to me.”
“You listened.” You smiled small and looked back down at him.
"I always listen.” Peter told you. That's it, hand me my backpack.” He commanded. You laughed but did as you were told. Peter began to dig in his backpack, emptying it of books to find what he was looking for.
"What are you doing?" You asked him. He didn't answer, but pulled a small ukulele out of his bag.
“Since when do you play?” You asked in shock. You were so sure you knew everything there was to know about Peter Parker.
“Since about three days ago.” Peter answered as he held the instrument to his ear and tuned it.
"Just listen, okay? I know it’s not a guitar, but listen.” He asked calmly. You nodded, dying to see where this was going as he began to strum his ukulele. His fingers soon found the rhythm and a melody flowed out. You didn't recognize the song a first, but soon realized it was You're Beautiful by James Blunt. You smiled and rested your hand on his knee as he played.
"My life is brilliant, my love is pure. I saw an angel, of that I'm sure." He sang softly. Not only could Peter play, the boy could sing. His voice was smooth and angelic, making your heart flutter. You’d never been serenaded before and it was definitely something you could get used to.
"You're beautiful, you’re beautiful, you’re beautiful, it's true. I saw your face in a crowded place and I don't know what to do. Cause I'll never be with you." He continued the song, finally looking away from the strings and into your eyes. You listened to him as closely as you could, basking in the moment. There was that incredible voice that you loved. Peter was always shy about things he was good at, and you wondered if that’s why you’d never heard his singing before. You felt robbed of his glory for the past 14 years.
"There must be angel with a smile on her face when she thought up that I should be with you.” He sang through a smile.
You beamed at him and his cheeks grew pinker and pinker. Peters fingers dragged along the strings as he approached the final verse.
"But it's time to face the truth; I will never be with you." He strummed once more before setting the ukulele down on his lap. He looked very satisfied with his little serenade before looking up at you for approval. You looked up into his brown eyes and broke into a huge smile.
"That was beautiful, Peter. I loved it.” You told him honestly as you reached over and took his hand. “But some of those lyrics are a lie."
Peter put the ukele back in his bag and sighed.
"No they're not, Y/n. You really are beautiful." He promised.
You laughed softly and toyed with his fingers.
"No, not those lyrics." You shook your head and Peter looked confused.
"Then, which lyrics?" He asked.
You held your breath and looked away from his gaze. It was time to take a leap of faith. “The ones that say ‘I'll never be with you’, I mean. That’s not true. At least, I hope it’s not true.” You look into Peters eyes and search them for a reaction. You thank your lucky stars when you see his face light up and a huge grin making its way across his lips.
"REALLY?!" He asked excitedly, then clears his throat and tries to look casual. "I mean um, really?" Peter asked with all the hope on the world in his eyes.
“Really.” You confirmed.
"Truth is Y/n, Liz didn’t turn me down. I actually turned her down for a the party because…” he trailed off.
"Because?" You asked, encouraging him to continue.
"Because, well...you're the one that I want. Not her or any other girl. I wanna be with you." He said softly and carefully, in fear of being rejected.
Little did he know, you had been dreaming of being his for months at that point. You didn't want to spend another second being just his friend. Peter looked at you longingly, expecting you to say something. But you didn't say anything; you just leaned forward and pressed your lips to his, gently in the pale moonlight. Peter seemed surprised at first, but then kissed you back, cupping your cheek with his hand. You leaned forward and pushed him back against the base of the chimney, melting into him. You finally broke apart and stared at each other in a comfortable silence, just enjoying each other's presence. He brought his slightly cold hand back to your cheek and you leaned into it.
"I really like you, Y/n.” Peter smiled, looking the happiest you’d ever seen him.
"I really like you too, Peter.” You smiled back.
Peter laughed in joy and kissed you again.
“Do you want to go to that party together?” Peter suggested “As a couple?”
“I would love to.” You agreed to his offer and turned around again to settle into his arms. You tilted your chins towards the sky again, returning to your stargazing. This time, you weren’t thinking about space. Stars weren’t your favorite thing in the universe anymore. Now, it was Peter Parker.

Mind & Soul (5/10)
Tumblr media
The story of how one man fell out of love and into it again
Charlie (Marriage Story) x Reader
6.8k; warnings for angst, marital affairs/cheating, nsfw content
Tumblr masterlist for previous chapters // Available on AO3
                                                       ---------------
Lately, I find myself out gazing at stars
Hearing guitars like someone in love
Sometimes the things I do astound me
Mostly whenever you're around me
Charlie used to love flying, before all this. He used to get such a thrill from the way his stomach would swoop as the plane would take off, would look out the window and marvel at how the Earth seemed so far away, so small. Buildings and cars and people no bigger than ants, while he sat in a great metal bird in the sky.
He doesn’t bother to open the shade now, exhausted of flying, exhausted from all the travel.
But Henry pushes the shade up, because Henry has the window seat, and now it’s his turn to stare with wide-eyed amazement at the way the world comes back into view from behind a thick blanket of clouds. Henry presses his face to the window, and when he looks up at Charlie with a big smile around a mouthful of chewing gum so his ears don’t hurt from the descent, despite the aches in his bones, Charlie smiles back.
“Are we almost there?” He asks, recognizing the monuments, finger pointing at the window.
“Should be, look, see they’re coming to collect our trash.” Charlie pulls off his headphones, stuffs them in his pocket. The flight attendants are making their rounds with a bleached smile and gentle wake-ups of passengers who had fallen asleep on the journey. They’re coming his way, so Charlie turns to Henry and picks up the little bag of goldfish from the airport and asks, “Are you finished with these?”
“Yeah I accidentally dropped one on the floor.” Henry makes that half-frown that kids make sometimes when they’re worried they’re going to get in trouble.
“That’s okay, just be careful not to step on it, it makes more of a mess that way.” Charlie smiles at him even though he’s too tired to really manage the muscles, shows him that it’s okay.
“I’ll be careful I promise, I accidentally stepped on a snail at mom’s apartment and I cried.” Henry whispers in Charlie’s ear, again worried that he’d be yelled at. Charlie wonders who was snapping at his son to make him fear every little admission. But Henry doesn’t seem upset, he shrugs and sits back in his seat with a, “So now I watch where I’m going better.”
“I’m sure the snail knew you didn’t mean it.” Charlie replies, although his brain is caught up more on the mention of Nicole than anything. He swallows hard, gives the stewardess the small empty bag of snacks and tries as casually as he can to muster up, “Do you like it, mom’s apartment?”
“Yeah there’s lots of kids who are all really nice, and the flowers are pretty. We go to the beach a lot and mom says I’m going to get tan, I’ve got a really good seashell collection so far. But it’s really hot.” Henry looks out at the night sky. “Like sticky all the time. Sometimes I feel like when I go out onto the balcony I can drink the water in the air.”
Charlie frowns, buckles Henry’s seatbelt when the little sign lights up.
“She’s got air conditioning, doesn’t she?” Charlie asks, as he buckles his own. He tries not to sound accusatory.
“Yeah but it’s still hot.” Henry replies, like it’s the easiest thing in the world.
And maybe it is.
Some things are easy, like the weather. That’s why everyone went to it for small talk, nothing easier than commenting about the weather.
It had been hot, when Charlie and Nicole had gotten into the fight.
He doesn’t want to think about it, the things they said. The way they both raged and shouted at one another in white stucco walls, bare walls with next-to-nothing of his own design, his own choice. He had called you, had asked you what to put up on those walls, and then, well. It didn’t matter much, did it? He went and ruined it, punched a hole straight through the whole thing.
He doesn’t want to think about the things he said. The way vitriol spit from his mouth, the way his face contorted and pinched and grew red hot, the way he could feel the blood pounding in his ears. How he had been fuelled by spite and hate and blind panic, panic because this was all going so wrong, so badly. It was going badly. He regrets it, what he says. He regrets a lot of it.
He doesn’t want to think about how true they all were, on both sides, and how painful that truth was. The words screamed screamed screamed at one another with shaking fists of fury. Who was this woman that he had married? And who had he become?
No, YOU fuck off. If you listened to your son, or anyone, he’d tell you he’d rather live here.
He tells you because he knows it’s what you want to HEAR!
Voices of his own hatred and fear and pain echo in his ears, pain and rage that he’s never felt before.
You’re being so much like your father.
DO NOT compare me to my father. You’re exactly like your mother! Everything you complain about her, you’re doing. You’re suffocating Henry.
He tries to blink back tears, as the plane soars through the sky. He feels sick, he’s exhausted. He wonders if Henry would forgive him if he went and threw up in the little bathroom that he can’t even fit in.
I felt repulsed when you touched me. The thought of having sex with you makes me want to peel my skin off.
You’ll never be happy. In LA or anywhere. You’ll think you found some better, opposite guy than me and in a few years you’ll rebel against him because you need to have your VOICE. But you don’t WANT a voice. You just want to fucking complain about not having a VOICE.
He looks out the window, his hands shake. He says he’ll be right back, as his feet carry him away, down the aisle despite the protesting flight attendants. They take one look at him and let him go, let him wedge himself into the bathroom.
You gaslighted me. You’re a fucking villain.
You want to present yourself as a victim because it’s a good legal strategy, FINE. But you and I both know you CHOSE this life. You wanted it until you didn’t.
He braces himself against the little counter, splashes water on his face. He can’t cry now, not yet. Henry needs him, he’ll need to hold Charlie’s hand because the landing part always scares him. He tries sucking tears back into his eyes, tilts his face up so they might just…reabsorb into his eyeballs. He doesn’t know.
You’re so merged with your own selfishness that you don’t even identify it as selfishness anymore. YOU’RE SUCH A DICK.
Every day I wake up and hope you’re dead-- Dead like--If I could guarantee Henry would be OK, I’d hope you get an illness and then get hit by a car and DIE.
The words are whiplash, when they come back, and he’s got a white-knuckle grip on the tiny counter, gets jostled around as the plane hits turbulence as it begins to descend. He should go back to his seat, he can hear the seatbelt sign dinging, can hear the pilot over the loudspeaker.
 I know.
I’m sorry.
Me too.
 Was he?
He splashes himself with water again, gets a grip. Leaves the bathroom, apologizes to the attendants as he quickly walks to his seat. He’s glad there was no one on the aisle side for his row, glad the plane was relatively empty, calm in the navy night.
“Are you excited to see the new house?” Charlie says in case Henry can see him in the dark.
“Yes!” Henry’s eyes shine happily and he turns to face his dad, “Mom said it’s got a big backyard, is that true?”
“A really big backyard, bigger than our old one. If you want we can get a pool and go swimming in the summer, you can invite all your friends over for a pool party.” Charlie promises. He’ll promise anything, at this point, anything Henry wants.
“Okay but only if there’s sno-cones, Billy had a birthday party and they had sno-cones and they were so good my mouth was stained for three days.” Henry laughed quietly to himself, and it kills Charlie that he wasn’t there to see it.
“We can have sno-cones. What else did you do with mom?” He wills his voice not to crack.
“Um,” Henry thinks around a yawn, “We went to the parks a lot. I’m learning how to roller skate.”
“Really? You’re brave, I’m too afraid of falling.” Charlie ruffles Henry’s hair.
“It’s not so bad, I’ve got knee-pads and everything.” Henry laughs and ducks out of the motion, playfully avoiding getting his hair messed up. It’s long, he needs a cut, Charlie thinks. “When we get home I’ll show you.”
“I’m going to hold you to that,” Charlie nods, and then he notices that the plane is dipping more dramatically, so he offers a big palm to his son and smiles, “Here hold my hand, we’re landing, chew your gum really fast.”
The landing is easy, only a little bumpy which Charlie’s thankful for. He didn’t know what kind of metaphor that would be, if the whole flight back home was rough. But the plane lands, and they’re on the tarmac, and the passengers all sleepily applaud in that way that they always do, and Henry makes a face.
“How come people are clapping?” Henry asks kind of loudly, innocently judgmental in that way kids can be.
“They’re thanking the pilot for doing a good job.” Charlie explains.
“Why don’t they just thank him then?” Henry doesn’t buy it, and Charlie chuckles to himself.
This really is his kid, he thinks. He tries not to cry.
“We can thank him when we leave.” Charlie unbuckles their seatbelts, and he can tell Henry is antsy to stretch his legs.
“Should we stand up now?” Henry asks, always filled with questions this one.
“No.” Charlie shakes his head on response, only to have his son look around him with a raised eyebrow.
“But they’re all standing.” He gestures to people crowding the aisle.
“That’s because they’re impatient.” Charlie mutters, not wanting to piss anyone off. He feels like he’d snap if someone challenged him on something, even something small. “They can’t go anywhere, it takes the pilot a long time to make sure everything’s okay with the plane before they open the doors.”
“You’re really smart dad.” Henry sighs and rests his head against Charlie’s bicep and says so soft that Charlie almost misses it, “I missed you.”
“I missed you too honey.” Charlie blinks, the ache in his heart slowly healing, trying its best to hold itself together until he can sob into his pillow.
Now that they’re landed, Charlie can pull his cell-phone out – his regular one, not the burner phone – and thumbs through his contacts. His heart leaps in his throat when he opens up your messages, half-expecting to find a picture of your tits right there in his face. But no, he only finds the innocent messages of friends.
We landed, should be off the plane in 20. He types up, hits send and anxiously awaits your reply.
“Who are you texting?” Henry peers over his arm, nosy.
“(Y/N), she’s going to pick us up from the airport and drop us at home.” Charlie shows him, because there’s nothing to see except plans and flight numbers that he sent you so you could figure out the best time to leave the house.
“(Y/N)! I have something for her.” Henry brightens up immensely, and he doesn’t know why, but Charlie’s relieved by that.
His phone buzzes before the screen even has a chance to go dark, and he smiles at the response:
Okay! I’m circling, JFK’s a nightmare right now. Let me know when you’re close. Can’t wait to see you!
“Oh yeah, what?” Charlie asks as he puts the phone away back in his pocket.
“No I can’t tell you, it’s a surprise and you’re awful about keeping surprises.” Henry rolls his eyes and laughs as Charlie ruffles his hair again.
“Okay okay, fair enough.”  He replies.
                                                     -----------------
Once they’re off the plane and away from the luggage carousel, once they’re down by the pick-up and drop off area, does Charlie feel warm. It’s a crisp forty-five degrees, and he’s in a sweater, but  he knows it’s really because of you, because he knows soon he’ll see you.
You spot them before they can spot you, and he swears he’s dreaming when he sees your car pull up, when he sees you jump out of the driver’s side and open the trunk. He’s hot all over, itchy, he wants to hold you, wants to hug you.
It’s been two weeks since he’s seen you, and fuck, oh fuck does he just want to hold you.
“Hi guys!” You laugh in excitement as the wind from the terminal tunnel fluffs up your hair. “Here, let me help, you must be tired.”
You come around and grab their suitcases, and part of him knows he should do it, but with his arm fucked up the way it is, he isn’t so sure he can. But the second you’re finished, he pulls you into a tight hug.
“You bet, thank you so much for getting us.” Charlie whispers, and he can feel you shudder out a sigh of relief into the embrace.
“Of course, how’s my favorite Henry?” You say when you pull away and crouch to his level so he can run into your arms.
“I’m your only Henry!” He points out, laughing as you pick him up and swing him around playfully before setting him down.
“Shh, don’t tell the others.” You wink, opening the back door for him and ushering him inside, “Come on, buckle in, safety first.”
You all climb into the car, and Charlie can’t stop looking at you. After two weeks of not having you, you’re finally here. He’s jumpy, he wants to tackle you. But you’re driving, and he’s exhausted, and his arm hurts.
He’s so tired, but it’s a good kind of tired, now that he’s with you.
“How was the flight?” You ask the car, look at Henry through the rearview mirror for a second before turning your eyes back to the road.
“Good, not too bumpy.” Henry says happily, watching the city lights zip past the window as you keep up with the speeding traffic. “I had goldfish.”
“I hope they didn’t spoil your appetite, I was thinking we could go out for some pizza. What do you think?” You smile, just happy for them to be back, happy for them to be home.
“I think I’d kill for a slice.” Charlie says, and fuck he’s struck by how badly he wants to hold your hand. “How about you, Henry?”
“Yes!” His son cheers at the idea of proper pizza, and Charlie smiles sadly.
LA had a lot of things, but New York did too.
He nudges his hand against yours gently, carefully, only for the briefest of seconds before he’s pulling back.
New York had you.

It’s late, but that doesn’t matter for the city that never sleeps. You make a pitstop at a favorite place, a little corner shop that only sells slices. The pizza is thin and folds in half like a dream, and Charlie can’t stop wolfing it down, can’t stop shoving it into his mouth. Nothing feels more like home than New York pizza, he thinks.
Especially when you and Henry are laughing about him behind your own slices.
It feels all too familiar, feels like it did when Nicole had fucked off for what Charlie thought was forever, when for six months Charlie cared for his son all on his own. Well, that’s a lie, remembering how so many nights were spent at this pizza joint, you and Henry laughing at him.
He hadn’t cared for his son all on his own.
“Hey Henry, what do you think about (Y/N) joining us for dinner tomorrow after you get back from school?” Charlie asks somewhat seriously, knowing that he’s killing the mood. But it’s an important question, and Henry can tell, even as he frowns.
“Why’d’ya ask it like that?” Henry asks before taking a big bite of crust.
“Well just because we’re going to have someone from the state come in and watch us, and I want to know if you’d rather have (Y/N) there for that or not.” He explains, looking at you before looking at his son. And as much as it hurts him to think of excluding you, he knows that whatever Henry is more comfortable with, he’d do. “It can be just the two of us, if you’d like.”
“Why’s someone watching us?” Henry asks, not angry or anything, just curious.
“Just to see how we are as a family, that’s all.” Charlie says.
He doesn’t say that it’s to see how fit he is as a parent, doesn’t say that it’s to make sure the house is livable, suitable, the best place for him. He doesn’t say there’s so much fucking pressure on this dinner to go well, doesn’t say that if anything bad happens they’ll side with Nicole and Nicole will win and he can’t have her win he just can’t –
“Well if they want to see the family, (Y/N)’s gotta be there too.” Henry says softly, like he’s nervous about it, and it shocks Charlie out of his own inner monologue. Henry looks at you, and almost like he’s worried you’re going to reject his broken family, he asks, “Don’t you?”
“If you want me, Henry.” You reply with a nod, because really, really this is about him.
About what’s best for him and his wants. He’s just a child, he shouldn’t have to know everything that he wants, shouldn’t have to have his whole upbringing uprooted because of it. But that’s what Nicole did to them, and that’s the way it is.
He’s old enough to know that, and it breaks Charlie’s heart.
“Yeah, you should be there.” Henry says, picking at some of the melted cheese that fell onto his piece of parchment paper.
You look at one another, and then you look at Charlie, and he doesn’t know how he isn’t supposed to cry. You can tell and so you stand up quickly, check your phone for the time.
“It’s getting late, I gotta drop you guys off at home! Want another slice to go? There’s nothing in your fridge, didn’t want it to spoil while your dad was away.” You say warmly, in that way that you always do, always there to diffuse a situation before it can even begin.
Charlie shakes himself, tries to get a grip. He doesn’t ever want to be a situation for you.
                                      ----------------------------------
Henry is practically falling asleep on the drive into the suburb where Charlie lives, where the new house is. You’d done a real good fucking number on it, turning it into a home while he was gone. It wasn’t something Charlie had any energy for, and so you took the two weeks to furnish it with things you thought they’d like. Henry is seeing it for the first time, but in a way, so is Charlie.
“Why don’t you go ahead honey?” Charlie says giving him the keys to go unlock the front door. “I’ll explore the house with you tomorrow, I’m beat.”
“Me too, time’s different here.” Henry says, and you chuckle a little at the way he’s jet-lagged like some old weary traveler. Henry grabs his backpack and runs into the house calling, “’Night dad, ‘night (Y/N)!”
“See you tomorrow sweetie.” You call after him, as Charlie comes around to your window and leans his arms against it. You look at him sadly, reach up to cup his cheek. He immediately leans into the touch, starved of you. “You okay?”
“Yeah, just wanted to look at you a little more.” He says, kisses your palm. It’s dark in the suburb, only a couple streetlights lit. “Do you really have to go?”
“Now that Henry’s back we have to be more careful, you know that.” You sigh, and you’re right, he knows you’re right. “Call me if you need me, okay?”
“What if I need you now?” He tries, but you only pinch his cheek and give it a little pat.
“Bye Charlie.” You say, and he steps away from your car.
He watches you drive down the road, watches as you always remember to use your blinker, before disappearing around the corner.
He feels empty as soon as you’re gone.

Lately I seem to walk as though I had wings
Bump into things like someone in love
Each time I look at you

Feeling like someone in love
In love
The house is too quiet, dark.
He closes the front door, drops his luggage. He’s exhausted, fuck he’s so tired. He’s so tired, the kind of tired that’s settled too deep into his bones, that no amount of sleep can fix. He’s tired, and he’s terrified, but he’s too frayed around the edges to really feel it, to really feel anything.
Henry has already run up the stairs, already found his room. Charlie can hear the excited happy noises as Henry’s light-up sneakers illuminate the hallway. He’s found the bluetooth radio Charlie got him on a whim, and is playing some song Charlie doesn’t know.
Charlie makes his way up to the master bedroom, something foreign and new and yet filled with you. Your mark is absolutely everywhere, even in the very floorboards. He drops his luggage and steps out of his shoes, feeling like garbage as he makes his way to the shower. He just wants to scrub the day away, just wants to scrub the feeling of slimy dirty Los Angeles away, wants the New York water to rinse his sins down the drain.
He turns the water hot as it will go, scalding, and when he strips himself down and changes the dressings on the deep gash in his arm, he stares at himself in the mirror. He doesn’t know who he is anymore, what he’s doing anymore. He doesn’t know. The whole thing feels fruitless, feels pointless. He wants to smash the mirror, when he sees the bags under his eyes.
“God, I hate, this!” He says at himself in the mirror no one there to hear him. Henry’s all the way on the other side of the house, has music playing off his phone. The music and the rush of the shower drown out the sound of his shout.
He steps under the spray, leans himself up against the cold tile wall and just watches as water swirls at his feet. He needs to get clean, he knows, he won’t crawl into bed until he is, and fuck, does he desperately want to be in bed.
He wants to feel the cool sheets on his skin, wants to breathe in the scent of his pillow. He wonders if they still smell like you. You’ve been checking on the house while he was away screaming at Nicole, you slept in his bed. He wonders if you touched yourself under his covers.
His hand reaches for his dick before he even really knows it, just at the simple thought of you.
You, you, you.
He misses you.
He’s missed you the entire time he went away to fucking LA.
He thinks about how you would have been with him, how you would have looked. He thinks about how you would have smiled at him in the mornings, how that smile would have cut through the fog. He thinks about you, how you would have warmed the side of the bed next to his, how your breath on his face would have woken him, how your moans would have filled the space of the shitty little apartment he’s punched a hole in.
“(Y/N),” He lets his head tip back against the cold tile as soap and suds run down his body, as they slick up his cock, as he jerks himself off, “Oh, (Y/N).”
He thinks about how you would have fucked him, let him fuck you, after the bullshit. After the fight. He wonders if the fight would have even happened, if you had been there with him. He wonders if anything bad could ever happen if you’re there.
He speeds up his hand, grip on himself tight, trying to emulate your own hand. Your hands are soft, they’re supple, they’re well manicured and they know how to twist and grope and squeeze him just right. He imagines you on your knees in front of him, imagines the way soap would wash down in between your breasts imagines the way you’d guide his cock to your lips –
“Fuck,” He’s groaning, smacking his head against the wall as his hips buck into his hand, as he fucks his hand, wishing he were fucking you.
God, all he wants is you.
He comes all over his chest, nearly loses his footing, because he doesn’t realize it, but he’s used your body soap that you kept in the shower and now he smells like you and that’s so overwhelming that he’s afraid he’ll black out.
His heart hurts, when he comes down from his high, and he watches as the evidence of his arousal winds down and around, going down the drain, like so much in his life.
He throws a hand out and shuts off the water, desperate for you. He knows he can call, he knows, you always pick up. He’s got the little burner phone with just one number programmed in. He can’t save it, he’s too afraid to save it, but if anyone were to look at the call log, it’s all you, just you.
He fumbles out of the shower to get himself dried off, stumbles into bed. The wound on his arm is bleeding, again, and he has a spike of panic that the bandages won’t be enough, again. He’ll deal with it later, in the morning, he doesn’t give a shit.
Right now all he needs is you.
The burner phone is in his pants pocket, right where he abandoned it next to the bed. He squints against the bright light of the screen as his fingers already know where to go, his hand already knows what to do. He can’t bear to bring it up to his face, not right now, not like this, so instead he rests the phone on his chest and turns it on speaker, listening to it as it rings.
“Pick up, pick up, pick up.” He begs the universe, eyes closed, fingers crossed, hoping hoping hoping it’s not too late.
“Charlie?” You ask, and fuck, oh fuck, he could cry, maybe he is crying, because that’s your voice. It’s music to his ears, it’s an original score winning best awards in every show, it’s a symphony at the philharmonic and he wants to give you a standing ovation as you ask, “Is everything okay?”
You’re worried, concerned for him. That brings him down to earth, the worry.
“Yeah, it’s – no it’s not. Fuck, are you, can you – ” He can’t lie to you now, but he doesn’t know what the fuck to even say, he doesn’t know.
You’re so good to him, so kind to him, so patient. He doesn’t know, but you do, you do because he can hear shuffling on the other end of the line, can hear you throwing the sheets off of your body, can hear you rummaging in your dresser for clothes.
“I’m on my way, I’ll be there in ten minutes.” You say, you promise, and it feels like he’s just been granted some illegal wish, some chance he shouldn’t have.
His hands shake as they rake through his wet hair, as he licks his lips, as he tries to tell himself to stay calm for just ten minutes, it’s only ten more minutes without you.
“Door’s unlocked.” He whispers into the phone, and you’re nodding, he can tell you’re nodding, by the way the phone statics up.
“Love you.” You say, and damn, no one’s said that to him in so long.
No one’s said it and meant it, other than you.
Ten minutes feels like ten years, when he’s in bed without you. He waits, just waits for you, his ears trained on the front door, waiting waiting waiting. He nearly falls off the bed when he hears you, finally, stepping into the house and locking up behind him. You come up the stairs two at a time, push open the bedroom door and take in the sight of him.
He’s managed to pull on sleep-pants, something soft and long to warm him, but he’s bare chested and his arm is still bandaged, and you tend to that first.
“Oh Charlie honey, what the hell happened, to you?” You ask, collecting him in your arms.
Something about that, about that simple embrace, has him sobbing in your hands. He’s been so emotional, this whole fucking week, so emotional. He doesn’t know how to handle any of it, it’s all so new, all so stressful. He’s so fucking stressed out, so he cries and cries and you just hold him tight as he clings to you.
You’re talking about the cut on his arm, the one that you now see because he’s shirtless. He’d been wearing a sweater since the airport was always fucking freezing, and you hadn’t seen it. But now you do, and that’s what you’re talking about, even though really you could have been talking about his whole life.
What the hell happened to him?
“It was stupid – I did that dumb fucking thing with the knife – ” He tries to explain, and you’re immediately rummaging through his pants.
“Where is it?” You ask, not unkindly, just insistently.
“What?” He’s confused, he’s so wrapped up in the thought of you, in the thought of you actually being here with him, that he missed the question.
You lean down to kiss him, and Charlie’s whole body tingles, his whole self comes alive. He’s never felt so alive, as to when you kiss him.
“The knife, the keys. Where is it?” You ask gently, rubbing a soothing little circle on his cheek.
“It’s on the night-stand.” He answers, leaning over and grabbing them, handing them to you, offering them to you.
He’d offer anything to you.
He’s offering you everything he has.
You take them and unclip the knife off the keychain, throw it into the waste basket, collect his face up in your hands again, kiss him again. You kiss him over and over and his sobs subside into hiccupping little gasps, little pants against your mouth.
He feels like a drowning man and you’re the only clean lungful of air he’s had in years.
“You’re never doing that trick again, do you hear me? It’s not funny, I don’t want Henry thinking it’s funny. You need stitches, we need to get you stitches.” You’re not angry, which he’s grateful for.
You’re worried, which kills him. He almost wishes you were angry instead of worried.
“We’ll go in the morning, after he goes to school, for now I just,” He trembles, shakes shakes shakes, “I want to be close to you, I need that (Y/N), I need to be close to you.”
He’s begging, he knows he is. Hands clasped before you he pleads for comfort, comfort he aches for.
The cooling balm of your love is his savior, and when you lean back only far enough to strip yourself out of your own clothes, when you come back towards him with open arms that you encourage him to throw himself into, he could scream shout sob with relief.
“You’ve got me, I’m here, I’m all yours.” You whisper, holding him close close close to your chest.
“Are you? Are you mine?” He whispers back, terrified, so terrified that this is all just a dream, that he’s still on the floor of his tiny fucking apartment in Los Angeles, bleeding out on the floor.
“I am, I promise Charlie, I am.” But you’re really real, and you’re really combing your fingers through his hair, and his heart is really racing even as you’re trying to calm him down. “You’re okay honey, it’s okay.”
He wrangles out of your grip, and you frown, brow creasing as he maneuvers the two of you so your positions are reversed, so he can press you into the mattress and prop himself on top of you. You are so beautiful, in the moonlight, the glow of the streetlamps washing over you, some ethereal thing.
He can’t help but litter your body with praise, adoration leaking from his fingertips. He can’t help it, not when you deserve it so, when you are the most deserving of it at all. He is reverent in the way he caresses your body, hands skimming the softness of your flesh, lips trailing after it as he presses kisses into your skin.
“Thank you, for being here, for being with me.” He is so grateful, so completely grateful for you, “Thank you, I don’t – I don’t know how I’d do this without you.”
He rests his head on your stomach and just stays there for a while, just stays there while he kisses your sides, before moving further down your body and opening your hips up, pressing your legs down flat onto the mattress on either side of his head.
“You don’t have to do it without me, I’m right here.” You sigh as he sucks marks onto your hips, fingers bruising the meat of your thighs with ease, not even realizing how tight of a grip he’s got on you.
You are the only good thing he’s had in so long, the only thing in this fucked up divorce that he knows he can count on, the only thing that he knows for sure who wants him.
He’s not even sure if Henry wants him.
“She’s winning.” Charlie says softly, on the verge of screaming. He wants to scream, but instead he focuses that energy into you, into your body, his fingers slipping between your legs and pushing into you, making your toes curl into the sheets. “She’s winning, (Y/N). She’s going to win and fucking take him away. This will be the last time he’s here. His first and last.”
“No she won’t.” You gasp as he shoves his nose into the crease where your thigh meets your pussy, how beautiful it is just for him, how it throbs. He wonders if you’ve been just as sick about it, about the distance, about missing him, as he has missed you.
“How do you know?” He asks, hopes, wants to know, wants some sort of answer that he knows you can’t give, not really. You can’t predict the future, you can’t sway the judge.
“I just do.” You say, and your back arches when he fingers you harder, when he draws out a moan, a real proper moan, from deep inside your cunt. Your hand comes down to tangle in his hair, and the sting of your pull is so good against his scalp, and you ask, “Have I ever been wrong before?”
“No – ” He shakes his head, kisses your body, kisses everywhere he can reach.
“Exactly.” You whisper, as he tries so hard to get as close to you as possible, as he tries to make up for the lost time, all that time of him being away, being across the country with a wife who doesn’t want him. He tries to express how much he adores you through the press of his fingers on your body, tries to express his gratitude as you beckon him up up up, asking, “Give me a kiss? My lips are lonely.”
“They are?” His eyes soften, and he aches for you, as he comes to your call, as he removes his fingers from the wet heat between your legs and smears your own slick across your cheek as he kisses you.
“They are, I get lonely when you’re gone.” You admit, and he’s so relieved in a sick sort of way, so pleased that you missed him too, that you thought about him too, thought about him from three thousand miles away.
“Come with me next time, to Los Angeles.” He says, more of an order than an ask, more of a demand than a plea. He kicks himself mentally for that, for being controlling, Nicole left him because he’s controlling, he can’t make that same mistake with you, so as he cups your cheeks in the moonlight he searches your eyes and adds, “Please?”
But you, you you you.
You just smile and nod and kiss him, when you say, “Yes.”
“Will you stay?” He murmurs against your lips, and you’re putty in his hands, you’re too tired to object, not that you want to.
“Yeah, we can come up with something to tell him.” You whisper, rubbing your nose against his, as your heart beats next to his.
“Once all this is over, I swear to you there’s gonna be no more hiding.” He cards a hand through your hair. “No more sneaking around, not ever again.”
“You’re worth the wait, you know?” You say, and there you go again, shattering his whole world, his whole perception of life, with those words. “You have to know that.”
He doesn’t, not really. Maybe he does. The selfish part of him does.
He doesn’t feel selfish around you.
Maybe that’s the most selfish thing.
“I love you.” He says, because it’s all he knows how to say right now, all he knows that’s true.
“I love you too.” You smile back at him, before having to clear your throat a little. “I’m thirsty, want something to drink from the kitchen? The fridge is the fancy kind, has the filter right in the door.”
“Yeah, better have some.” He nods, not wanting to let you go.
He does anyway, because nothing’s about what he wants anymore.
“I’ll be right back.” You kiss his cheek, and put your clothes back on.
You have a spare change of clothes in the dresser from when you spent the nights there getting the place ready, but there’s no sense in putting on a brand new outfit to go downstairs. Charlie watches you leave the bedroom, and just because he can, just because he’s missed you so much, he pulls on some pajama bottoms and creeps to the edge of the stairs.
“(Y/N)?” He hears Henry’s sleepy voice upon your arrival.
Charlie winces, heart racing.
“Hey Henry, what are you doing awake?” You say softly, keeping your composure, trying to appear as casual as possible.
“I can’t sleep, my body’s still on LA time.” Henry sighs, and Charlie feels awful, maybe he should have read him a bedtime story or something before having a nervous breakdown in the bathroom. But then Henry asks, “How come you’re here?”
And he freezes, ears trained to know what you say so he knows how to verify it in the morning.
“Your dad forgot something in the car so I came back over.” You lie easily. But is it a lie? He forgot his heart, in the passenger seat of your car. You only returned to put it back into his chest. You’re opening up the cabinets, Charlie can hear it when you say, “I know what’ll help, how does a mug of hot tea sound?”
“Will you make it with lemon and honey like you used to?” Henry asks, and there’s that reminder again, of the six months where you and Charlie scrambled, tried your damnedest to preserve what was left of this family.
Henry had used that word, hadn’t he? Family.
“You bet, and two cubes of sugar.” You say, rustling around with something, probably the box of sugar.
“(Y/N)?” Henry asks again, his voice so small, and Charlie holds his breath.
“Yeah?” You ask right back, setting the kettle to boil.
“I’m glad you’re here.” Henry says.
“I’m glad I’m here too.” You reply, “I missed you kiddo, both of you.”
He can’t see, but maybe you’re hugging.
He can’t see, but maybe you’re smiling at each other.
He can’t see, but maybe everything will be okay.
Maybe it’ll all be okay.
Lately I seem to walk as though I had wings
Bump into things like someone in love
Each time I look at you
I'm limp as a glove
And feeling like someone in love
Feeling like someone in love
In love

Tumblr media
I'm Anjum Khanna from India and I will share with you my best places in the USA where I visited. Pleasing Planet's movement specialists have scoured the States to present to you our main 10 underestimated, restored and incredible spots to visit in 2020. From normal marvels to enrapturing coastlines and exceptional urban areas, these objections guarantee enormous things this year.
1. California’s Redwood Coast
Lose all track of time (and cell signal) along California's Redwood Coast. Film buffs may perceive the district's scene-taking sceneries from Hollywood blockbusters like Jurassic Park, E.T. furthermore, Star Wars. In any case, the full marvel of California's 2000-year-old redwoods – some arriving at 20 stories high – is difficult to catch on any screen. Gaze toward the woodland shelter: that last 100ft of redwood development marks a long time since Redwood National Park was built up in California's tree-embracing win over logging. What's more, this year, in the festivity of their 100th commemoration, Save the Redwoods League is without offering passage to more than 40 redwood state stops each second Saturday of every month.
In 2020, another sort of greenery has been standing out as truly newsworthy as California presents the state-wide legitimization of pot. However, the draws of the Redwood Coast far outperform changes in this industry, welcoming explorers to accomplish a definitive California smooth with its peculiar shops, brewpubs, espresso roasters and calm cheerful hours.
2. Boise, Idaho
Home to a lively expressions network, a blast of grant winning wineries and specialty bottling works and a socially dependable shopping locale, Boise is what cool resembles before the remainder of the world has made sense of it. Fun celebrations have large amounts of Idaho's capital from downtown's Treefort Music Festival (hailed as the new option in contrast to SXSW) to the Boise Brew Olympics and Punk in Drublic – a lovely marriage of underground rock and specialty lager.
Being in closeness to an abundance of characteristic wealth, metropolitan experiences effectively progress into outside departures. Wander through the Boise River Greenbelt, a 25-mile park in the core of the city, or head into the encompassing mountains and lower regions for climbing, mountain biking, skiing and stream boating.
3. Chattanooga, Tennessee
When minimal in excess of a refueling break among Atlanta and Nashville, the nature-driven 'Noog has changed itself into a stronghold of raised Southern living. Outside lovers rush to Chattanooga for the absolute best stone moving in the nation, bunch climbing and mountain biking trails and wild rides on the Ocoee River – one of America's best positions for whitewater boating.
Foodies, hopheads and nerds aren't a long ways behind, either. Chattanooga's revived midtown – focused on the $20-million makeover of the city's unique train station into a multi-reason nightlife and diversion objective (counting a top notch guitar historical center) – is overflowing with journey commendable New Southern food, refreshing distilleries and nerd satisfying web speeds. Meet the New South!
4. Florida’s Space Coast
Space the travel industry is a rising star, with 2018 set to check the dispatch of the world's first lunar the travel industry departure from SpaceX. Try not to need to lose your life reserve funds down a dark gap? Visit the following best thing, Florida's Space Coast: home to the Kennedy Space Center and the setting for innumerable notable dispatches including Apollo 8 – the world's previously monitored rocket to circle the moon – which praises a long time since launch in 2020.

Proceed your amazing experiences with an evening time kayak in the bioluminescent waters around Merritt Island and watch settling ocean turtles on an eco-accommodating visit.
5. Cincinnati, Ohio Set among steep slopes with the scaffold throne Ohio River swashing its edge, Cincinnati has consistently been a looker. Presently brew, expressions and clever neighborhood advancement are giving it some strut. The new Brewing Heritage Trail recounts the larger story: how Cincy was a main maker through the last part of the 1800s, its residents swallowing 2.5 occasions the public normal. Today Rhinegeist and other present day lager producers have assumed control over the relinquished distilleries, a considerable lot of which are walkable in Over-the-Rhine, an old German neighborhood of lavish block structures, new restaurants and crazy shops.
2020 invites another section for the city's creative symbols as the Music Hall commends its 140th birthday celebration subsequent to going through enormous redesigns, and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company subsides into their new powerful exhibition space.
6. Midcoast, Maine
Single word says everything: 'Ayuh'. What could be compared to 'mm-hm', it's Mainers' typically eccentric and unassuming go-to answer. Is it valid, you solicit, that about 90% of Maine is forested (the most noteworthy level of any state), making it ideal for experience exercises and getting away from traveler swarms? Ayuh. Also, what about Midcoast Maine's wonderful sea exhibition halls and detonating foodie scene of art bottling works, neighborhood grape plantations and gourmet ranch-to-table cafés? It's not the tranquil woodlands it used to be. Ayuh. Indeed, 2018 will check the area's 70th Maine Lobster Festival and a transitioning as an inexorably energizing social focus of elite workmanship historical centers and exhibitions, isn't that so? Ayuh.
7. Richmond, Virginia
River City has flipped from modest to occurring, however the 'hello you all' friendliness remains. Scott's Addition, when an abrasive assembling region, drones with microbreweries, cideries and buzzworthy cafés, while the James River baits swashbucklers with whitewater rapids in addition to another 52-mile bicycle trail along its banks.
Creative features incorporate midtown's splendid wall paintings, the eccentric Quirk Hotel (highlighting interesting plan components and its own craft display) and imaginative transitory shows at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The American Civil War Museum – an ongoing solidification of three separate Civil War locales – investigates Richmond's function as the capital of the Confederacy. One consistent? Patrick Henry requested freedom or demise at reenactments each Sunday in summer at St John's Church.
8. Kentucky Bourbon Country The territory of Kentucky is known for its moving slopes finished off with masterful pony cultivates, its wild commitment to school ball and, above all, its whiskey. The state's refining legacy runs profound, and those searching for a taste should make a beeline for Kentucky Bourbon Country, the brilliant triangle between Louisville, Lexington and Elizabethtown where this prepared soul becomes animated. You'll locate a luring organization of the nation's most notable refineries and first class eateries with whiskey motivated menus.
Yet, this industry isn't so saturated with custom that it overlooks progress – create distillers are opening their entryways, long dead whiskey locale are being rejuvenated, and in 2020 the Frazier Museum will be named the official beginning stage of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
9. Minneapolis, Minnesota
In spite of arriving on arrangements of 'generally moderate' and 'generally reasonable' urban areas – and in a state positioned the USA's most joyful – Minneapolis appears to be a piece overlooked. In any case, after its chance at the center of attention during the current year's Super Bowl, that could very well change. The city endeavored to tidy up for the large occasion, specifically with redesigns to downtown's primary avenue Nicollet Mall presenting awesome light highlights, craftsmanship establishments and creative social spaces.
The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden likewise got a redo, with 18 new works by well known chiselers. Furthermore, Target Center, the city's NBA and WNBA field, got a fan-accommodating $145 million makeover. In the interim, new boutique inns and present day ranch to-table cafés (hefty on neighborhood fixings) are springing up with cool verve.
10. Southeastern Utah Arches National Park's colorful sandstone ranges. Island in the Sky's Colorado River-cut vistas. Landmark Valley's sky-puncturing towers. Southeast Utah's significant milestones have been firm top picks among voyagers for quite a long time. As of late, nonetheless, lesser-realized territorial destinations like the forested levels of the new Bears Ears National Monument have become hot-button news things because of political tussles in Washington, DC over securing characteristic and social assets.
This tremendous quarter of the Beehive State holds numerous outstanding outside objections, from the lodging filled experience town of Moab and uncrowded Capitol Reef to the environmental Ancestral Puebloan vestiges of Hovenweep. Water has slashed the desert scene here, cutting the sandstone into alarming structures, for example, the pleasant Natural Bridges and huge Lake Powell. This is a quintessential Americana excursion nation.

Summer kicked off with a bang and the celebration of graduation started way too early. So early, that SOMEONE barley managed to pass their senior year. But that was no surprise, and Henry didn't seem to really care whether or not he got that diploma.
But no one was thinking about that now. High school was behind you and the world was your oyster! And what was a better way to celebrate than a good old fashion vacation? Really, it was Reggie's idea. It was a drunken idea he spouted out around a bonfire. He didn't expect anyone to actually hear it.
"Fuck yeah! Lets go on a roadtrip!" Henry shouted, also drunk, crushing his beer can and tossing it into the fire.
"I'm so down!" You shouted, buzzed and hanging onto Patrick.
"Roadtrip! Roadtrip! Roadtrip!" They cheered, and gradually it became a chant until Vic drunkenly fell into the fire and you had to rush to fish him out. He was fine. No real burns, jusr scrapes a bruses. But all of sudden, the idea of a roadtrip had been cemented in your minds and you had to! So the day after graduation, you and your four boys piled your horribly packed bags into the trunk of Reggie's Trans Am, and headed for California. The ideal summer vacation spot.
Here is what unfolded on the long drive down Route 66 for those three days:
Day 1:
You started by sitting in the middle back seat, the traditional placement or Patrick to you right and Vic to your left. Reggie driving, and Henry in his thrown of the passanger seat.
That meant Henry was in charge of music, just loud blaring guitar and drums while a 20 something white boy screamed at the top of his lungs.
Within 20mins, Vic had to pee.
Henry yelled at him, and threw an empty water bottle at him.
That is generally how bathroom breaks were delt with. The boys could pee in a bottle...you...could not.
Sometimes the boys forgot that you weren't exactly like them. I mean, they knew you anatomy pretty damn well but, you get my point.
The majority of the first day was pulling over for bathroom breaks and much needed snacks. And also for a pack of smokes. Henry smoked like a chimney and was out within the first day.
Conversation was fun, funny, light hearted.
You stopped at a motel in the middle of absolutely knowhere.
Someone had definitely been murdered in your room.
That didn't stop the boys. A full on orgy insued.
Day 2:
You missed the continental breakfast ( not much loss) but point is you all got a late start despite Reggie pushing ya'll to get up.
Henry was the last to get up. Patrick thought it would be funny to give him and rude awakening. He stood on the bed and jumped until Henry woke up, screaming and demanding him to stop.
You were late to check out. That was...expected.
Late start, means annoyed Reggie, and annoyed Reggie means passive aggressive Reggie. And Passive aggressive Reggie means upset Henry. Upset Henry means poking, prodding Patrick. Prodding Patrick means furious Henry. Furious Henry means sad Vic. Sad vic means, sad and upset EVERYONE.
You sat in the front and picked the music and dictated when and where you made stops.
Generally that day was silent and uneventful.
Until you pulled over and Patrick decided he needed a quickie in the Gas station bathroom. Which means thats all the boys wanted a quickie.
One at a time.
By the end of day two, you made it halfway through. You stopped at a collection of motels and shopping malls on the side of road. Clearly geared towards tourists. Kansas didn't have much to offer.
Day 3:
Everyone was up bright and early the next day. Bright is an understatement. No one was happy to be awake. So for the first few hours of driving you snuggled up with Vic and Henry and slept in the back seat.
Up until you heard Patrick in a low monotone voice say, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, bitches."
Reggie just looked at him, and laughed after an awkward amount of silence.
You stopped in Arizona to take a picture at the Grand Canyon.
No one else but you and Reggie seemed to care about taking pictures on your little disposable cameras.
At this point, you had heard all the rock music everyone had brought on their CDs and Cassette tapes. So you were at the mercy of the radio, which sucked.
You drove for a while in silence until Patrick got bored and turned it back on.
"Wow! Look at that sunset!" Vic shouted as he stared out the window. Indeed, the sky was gorgeous. You didn't get sunsents like that up in Maine.
"Welcome to California! We made it, guys!" Reggie delcared that night.
You still hadn't reached your destination until late, late that night.
A shitty, falling apart Motel just along the shitty California waters.
You're pretty sure you heard someone get murdered in the room next to you.
"Are you sure he's not just murdering that pussy?" Patrick asked, half joking, half serious.
No one got laid that night. Especially not Patrick.
Beach Day
Thats all you did, all day. Just, the warm sand, the warm sun, and waves crashing down. It was a dream.
You body surfed with Henry and Belch. You suntanned with Vic, and collected seas shells with Patrick.
"Wheres Patrick?"
"He was supposed to get us soda." You found him in the topless section. (Look, Patricks not gonna cheat on ya'll, he's just window shopping. You can't really blame him, you people watch with him for a bit before dragging him away.)
Everyone got sunburned. It was hell.
"Is Henry still in the water?"
"Last I saw." Off in the distance, a small dot reached an arm out and waved as it drifted further and further into the ocean.
"HENRY!"
All in all, your trip was fun. You spent a day at the beach, you got super sunburned, you guys got drunk in your hotel room and played poker. That was fun. Henry lost. You spent some quality with just your little, fucked up, family. Then you remembered you would have to take three more days to get back home.

Jimi Hendrix and the Unidentified Mourner
In the summer after my first year at the University of Washington, the year of the Radical Movement, the Seattle Liberation Front and the shutdown of freeways and takeovers of campus buildings, with tear gas at demonstrations and helmeted police tech squads bashing with batons, I lived in the House of Happiness, a barren white house in a dingy area of south Seattle off Rainier. We were there for Henry, a charismatic Black 35-year-old man with a build and demeanor like the statue of David. His eyes looked deeply into you and were matched by mindful eloquence. The only “furniture” we had was a saw horse in the carpeted large main floor living room and a mattress in one of the bedrooms upstairs. We all slept curled up on the carpeted floor except for Sheila who had her own room upstairs. We were there for a therapy led by Henry of expanding consciousness, of leaving our old conditioned self behind and stepping into a whole new world of natural instinct. Henry had come from a group in Chicago named “Naturalism Inc.” They were part of the revolution that incited the riots during the Democratic Convention which led to the arrest and trial of the Chicago Seven. So Henry had “cred”.
We were just down the road from Sick Stadium, Seattle’s baseball stadium. Down the hill from our house was a discount store called “Chubby Tubby’s”. Word was announced that Jimi Hendrix would be playing at Sick Stadium. I went with my first girlfriend Judy. We sat up in the bleachers under cover while Seattle drizzle sprinkled lightly on the field beneath a gloomy grey sky watching the opening band half-heartedly. I had a couple mescaline pills that we downed. They began to kick in lightly as we went to the inside food stands during intermission. My old friend Johnny Rosenberry was there, grinning mischieviously. Friends since third grade at Sacred Heart Elementary School, we were renegade spirits. No surprise that he would be at the concert, releasing his comical laughing eyes like a Shakespearean sprite. Back in the stands, we saw the deluge of rain come spattering down on the field below. Hordes of people left, or perhaps stayed in the stands, whereas Judy and I went down to the field itself where there were about seventy or eighty of us in separate groupings with a foot of two between us. It was perhaps due to the mescaline that the rain didn’t matter. In fact it looked like thin rivulets of honey running down my arms and face and everyone around us. Hendrix came out and was at the front mic introducing what was to come. A round faced girl with long thick dark hair hoisted a watermelon up as a gift to him. Jimi bent down and took it up, and with a feigned look of awe held it to his mouth and mimed chomping into it. Then with a snarl threw the melon back. That night he played all the major classics from “Are You Experienced” up through “The Power of Love”. Then he jammed with the band, improvising wildly as lightening flashed overhead. It was a stunning nuclear blast, here in his home town. Afterwards as the rain had let up we all stumbled out onto the street, our senses reeling. I looked over and saw Jerry, a friend from our Henry sessions , someone who had become shell-shocked, probably from drugs, grinning at us while he lopped a huge banana into his mouth, appearing as if he just stepped out from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
Later that summer in my family house in Spokane it was in the kitchen that I heard the news. We had an inbuilt intercom system that also was a radio. The intercom was useful for the downstairs boy’s hallway when Dad wanted to yell at us to get upstairs. Mom was fixing my Dad’s lunch. The newscaster said that Jimi Hendrix had just died in London. It was a punch in the gut. I slipped a bland menthol cigarette out of my mother’s purse and retreated to the furnace room beneath the stairs. I sat in the dark numbly smoking.
It was October and time to return to Seattle for the Fall Semester at the U of W. I stayed at Larry’s apartment at the north end of the Ave. at the top facing a little park where men cruised at night. We had just the month before separated from Henry and the House of Happiness. Having enough of being broke, and the attempted rape of Sheila by Roosevelt, a lumbering homeless Black man who in drunken rage threw food including eggs against the kitchen walls, and most of all Henry’s brief imprisonment, did we decide in a group meeting by candlelight (electricity had been cut off) to go our separate ways. Sheila back to Montana, Frances to her father’s apartment on Capitol Hill, Henry to the Bay Area, and myself to Spokane, where I was to hear the Hendrix news.
Now back in Seattle and the room at the top, we listened as the radio announced a public service for Hendrix in Sick Stadium. I was all set to go. Then at the 11th hour, it was announced that the viewing was canceled, that the family was going to have a private service. Its location was to be kept secret from the public. I was crushed. I felt that I needed to be there. Hendrix had been my God, his masturbatory sexuality on stage inflamed the very core of my being. His Black bluesy subtlety took me to an inner depth of quiet genius, this rebel who smashed all barriers and was the nucleus of the hippie consciousness expanding through the universe, the ultimate proof that the world would shift and connect all peoples with the Beatles mantra “All You Need Is Love.” We were to enter the Elysian Fields, holding hands, and now the light was snuffed.
In the morning, determined to find a way, I thought “funeral homes”. The radio report had started that all people involved with the funeral service were instructed to maintain absolute secrecy. I decided to try anyway, and opened the phone book to the yellow pages listing of funeral homes in Seattle. I started off  calling one with “You’re handling the Hendrix service, aren’t you?” They hung up on me. This happened a few times. Larry had gone downstairs to the street where he had his car to drive us down to school. I was frustrated and desperate as Frances in the doorway was urging me to get moving down to the waiting car. I frantically dialed one more. This time the person answering replied “Yes, we are.” (pause) He exclaimed. “Who IS This?” I was silent. He hung up.
I had found it. In the car my mind raced. Frances and Larry were indifferent. We got to campus and I needed someone to assist me. Frances and Larry had raced off to their classes. I couldn’t call the funeral home back as they knew my voice. I saw Rochelle, a tall gawky girl with short cropped dark hair. I got her to go into a phone booth in the HUB and call the funeral home stating that she was  the florist handling the service but that she has misplaced the address. I saw her jot it down. I grabbed the paper and tore off across campus to find a bus going to that far side of south Seattle. It was late morning and I panicked, thinking I might miss it all. I sat in the back of the bus on the green naugahyde long seat facing the center aisle. I sat sideways facing front, watching for any sign of a church, scratching anxiously on the seat. To calm myself I imagined giving a eulogy, saying how Jimi’s death marked the end of the era, what with Altamont and the Isle of Wight’s violent festivals sending the Woodstock Generation of Peace and Love from it’s Genesis to this ultimate death. This was the end, sadly marked by the loss of its prophet.
Then around a curve I saw a line of silver police motorcycles side by side, their fronts facing diagonally out from the curb. Then the little chapel appeared to my right with groupings of people on either side of the doorway. I got off the bus and joined them. The chapel was filled, and even famous musicians were outside, including Johnny Winters, all facing the center door listening. One could hear speakers and hymns. Then the congregation began to exit. Photographers bound across the grass towards the concrete walkway. First came the family members. A group of teenage girls, perhaps Jimi’s cousins or nieces in black saw the cameras and the plump  one in the middle fell out in a Baptist seizure while the other two held her up. Buddy Miles emerged serene and robust in a jacket of multi colored patchwork squares of gold, dark green and maroon leather, like a checkerboard. Miles Davis strode out with a young woman on both arms, one in a hooded red cloak and the other a light skinned thin black girl in a silver miniskirt with accents of lilac, a huge billowy lilac afro and silver boots. The curb was lined with a dozen limousines, black uniformed drivers opening the  doors. I went past the photographers and entered an empty limo, sitting against the far window. The limos filled with family and associates and we were off, sailing outside Seattle until a green grassy large cemetery appeared to the right. There was a rope strung across a walkway to keep the photographers and any outsiders back, but I continued past with the family and guests. Up upon a knoll beneath an awning was the casket covered with flowers. Just a few feet away was a large guitar of purple and white flowers propped on a stand angled towards the coffin. Everyone stayed down about ten feet from there as the immediate family went up beneath the awning. They were all in black. There may have been some words shared and a prayer, followed by the singing of a hymn. I think it was “Swing Down, Sweet Chariot.” As they sang, one of the young girls pulled some flowers off of the casket as a keepsake. It seemed like a good idea, so when they stepped away and the onlookers relaxed in position, I stepped up to the casket and pulled some flowers off myself. I didn’t realize it was a moment for Jeffrey Michaels, Jimi’s producer, and the musicians from the original Jimi Hendrix Experience, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell to stand before the casket. A photo of this moment appeared in both Seattle newspapers the next day, one of which calls me the “unidentified mourner” while naming the other three. The photo captures me reaching into the flowers.
I walked down through the mingling people and stopped near a group of about eight people, recognizing a few as famous musicians. At the foot of the group a short soft-spoken Black man was the focus of everyone’s attention. He sounded like he had a sore throat, speaking in a raspy voice, as he said that Jimi’s music was what he listened to at home. Then he stopped and looked past everyone at me, with a questioning look on his face like “Who the fuck are you?” As the others turned towards me I gave a thoughtful look into another direction and stepped away. As soon as I began to walk back up the knoll a young woman stepped to me with a microphone and asked what effect Jimi’s death had on me. I was already prepared, as I had already given this speech in my head on the bus coming out to the chapel. Rochelle, the friend who had called the funeral home as the florist, heard my interview on the radio the next morning.
Up a curve a limo drove through the trees and stopped just down from us. The driver in black got out and opened the back door. The woman in the red cloak and dark glasses emerged and walked slowly but focused past everyone and up to the flowered casket. She lifted her arm thoughtfully keeping it straight with her palm extended over the casket and held it still that way for a few moments as everyone else stood frozen and mesmerized. She then receded back to the limo where the driver shut her door and drove back down the curving hillside.
I was driven back into the City. When I saw myself called the “Unidentified Mourner” in the morning newspaper, I was amused. It seemed a good title for my life. The flowers remain in the magazine I pressed them in.

Lover of Diaries
Fans got an inside look at some of Taylor Swift’s most personal thoughts when they bought the deluxe version of her new album, Lover.
Along with some behind-the-scenes recordings, each album featured a 30-page booklet with excerpts from her personal diaries — some even from she was just 13!
“I’ve written about pretty much everything that’s happened to me. I’ve written my original lyrics in those diaries, just feelings,” she said on an Instagram Live announcing the booklets. “It’s everything from pictures drawn, photos of that time in my life, I used to like tape stuff in my diaries.”
Here are the top 10 takeaways from her personal diary entries.

Swift the Lyricist
If the diary entries are filled with anything, it’s a deep dive into her song lyrics.
“Red” was born on a long flight — and everyone she played it for loved it.
“Its [sic] so different than anything we’ve done,” she wrote in 2011. “I can’t even tell you how alive and worthwhile I feel when I’m writing a new song and I finish it and people like it. It’s the most fulfilling feeling, like getting an A+ on your report card.”
The diaries also share early versions of “All Too Well” and songs like “Long Live,” “White Horse,” “Holy Ground” and “This Love.”
In a 2014 entry, she writes about the creation of her ultra-hit “Shake It Off.”
“The best way I know how to describe it is that the chorus just fell out of the sky,” she wrote in 2014.
“We all went home and I wrote the first and second verses and brought them in the next day. We wrote this chanty cheer leader bridge that I absolutely LOVE,” she continued.
As for the album cover that would accompany “Shake It Off,” she wrote that she “saw it within 10 seconds.”
“The craziest moment came when something caught my eye. The cover photo is photo 13. I kid you not,” she wrote about the polaroid cover to 1989, which she accompanied with a sketch.

A Glamorous Gala
In a diary entry, Swift writes about being invited to “this event called ‘The Met Gala.’”
To an 18-year-old Swift, that day was “THE party of the year.”
“The paps started SCREAMING for me. It was crazy,” she wrote in May 2008. “We made our way up the red carpet, posing for everyone. All of the women looked so glamorous in their gowns.”
Along with meeting Anna Wintour, George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Giorgio Armani at the event, she wrote that “models stood as decorations, standing still and wearing gorgeous gowns.”
Once inside, she lists “every celebrity ever created” at the event, including Scarlett Johansson, Tom Brady, Beyoncé, Victoria Beckham, Tom Cruise and Jon Bon Jovi “who called me over to talk to him.”

Borchetta's Beginnings
Weeks before the release of Lover, a public feud involving Swift and her old label Big Machine made headlines when the label’s founder Scott Borchetta sold the label (and ownership of her masters) to Scooter Braun.
But years before, Swift had nothing but kind things to say about the label founder who signed her.
After meeting with Capitol Records and not being offered “the deal I would want,” she met with Borchetta — and left with feelings of excitement.
“I really loved all the stuff he said in the meeting, and he stayed for the whole Bluebird show,” she wrote in November 2014. “And he’s SO passionate about this project. I think that’s the way we’re gonna go, I want to surround myself with passionate people.”
A meeting with Borchetta also made “Sparks Fly” as she came up with the name of her second album.
“We were talking about the record and I had this epiphany,” she wrote in April 2010. “I didn’t talk in interviews about how I felt about much of what has happened in the last two years. I’ve been silent about so much that I’m saying on this album. It’s time to Speak Now.”
“Scott freaked out. He loved it,” she wrote in April 2010. “We have a title, ladies and gentlemen!”

"The Hunters Will Always Outnumber Me"
Swift also opens up about the lack of privacy that comes with being a celebrity — and how she’ll never get used to seeing “a group of people staring, amassed outside my house, pointing, camera phones up…”
“They could never imagine how much that feels like being hunted,” she wrote.
Swift compares her “mostly perfect life” to “being a tiger in a wildlife enclosure.”
“It’s pretty in there, but you can’t get out,” she described in the August 2013 note.
“No matter how big my house is or how many albums I sell, I’m still going to be the rabbit,” she added. “Because the hunters will always outnumber me. The spectators will stand by, shaking their heads, going ‘that poor girl.’ But the point is, they’re still watching. Everyone loves a good hunt.”
But her feelings about being “hunted” also translated into worrying about her generation’s obsession with taking photos “so that they can spend all day checking the comments underneath.”
“They will never truly experience a moment without attempting to capture it and own it,” she wrote, comparing pulling a flower from the ground to take photos. “Nevermind that picking a flower kills it, the same way taking a picture of a moment can ruin it altogether.”
Swift has notably kept comments off of her post to improve her mental health.
“I’m training my brain to not need the validation of someone telling me that I look 🔥🔥🔥,” she wrote in Elle. “I’m also blocking out anyone who might feel the need to tell me to ‘go die in a hole ho’ while I’m having my coffee at nine in the morning.”

From Fearful to "Fearless"
Though Swift is now known for her jaw-dropping stage presence, as a young singer she wrote that she would “get stage fright every time I walk onto a stage.”
“I wish it wasn’t so, but I can’t blame my mind for freaking out about performances,” she wrote in 2010, days before releasing Speak Now. “Criticism of my performances has been the biggest source of pain in my life.”
“I sometimes feel like my college degree is in acting like I’m ok when I’m not,” wrote a 20-year-old Swift.
But even as a burgeoning singer at just 13, she would get hate while on stage. During one performance, her guitar pick broke in half and fell while she was playing.
“There was this huge silence! It was awful! I had to bend over and pick it up in front of everyone!” she wrote next to the broken pick. “And while I was singing, this guy was shouting stuff like, ‘Go on, b*#@! Sing that country bulls#*%! Go on motherf—!.’ It was awful.”

Done with Dieting
In her diaries, she also candidly writes about sticking to a diet as a teen.
Soon after Thanksgiving 2006, she returned to Nashville to her “own comfy bed” and planned to go out to eat with her best friend Abigail Anderson during a day off.
“Oh and I’m dieting again,” she wrote right after.
“Over the holidays I didn’t watch what I ate and man its [sic] so weird how fast I can gain or lose weight… It’s crazy,” she ended the note. “So I’m going to lose some now.”
Earlier this year, she wrote about finally being okay with gaining weight.
“I learned to stop hating every ounce of fat on my body,” she wrote in Elle. “I worked hard to retrain my brain that a little extra weight means curves, shinier hair, and more energy.”
The “Daylight” singer also said that she’s constantly working on her body image.
“I think a lot of us push the boundaries of dieting, but taking it too far can be really dangerous. There is no quick fix,” she said. “I work on accepting my body every day.”

"I'ma Let You Finish, But..."
“Ahh… the things that can change in a week…” wrote Swift in a Sept. 18, 2009 journal entry.
Five days had passed since Kanye West crashed Swift’s Video of the Year acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, but the whole ordeal was all she — and everyone else — could think about.
“If you had told me that one of the biggest stars in music was going to jump up onstage and announce that he thought I shouldn’t have won on live television, I would’ve said ‘That stuff doesn’t really happen in real life,’” she wrote.
“Well… apparently…. It does,” she ended the note.
Little did 19-year-old Swift know that West would cause more tumult in her life seven years later. In an August 2016 note, she simply wrote, “This summer is the apocalypse.”
The “apocalyptic” summer came when West referred to the singer as “that bitch”in his track “Famous” and featured a nude version of the “Shake It Off” singer in its accompanying video.
Then, Swift said she never approved of the lyric after his wife Kim Kardashianleaked a phone call conversation between the two singers.
“Being falsely painted as a liar when I was never given the full story or played any part of the song is character assassination,” she wrote then. That “Cruel Summer” ordeal would go on to inspire her sixth album, reputation.

A Joe Alwyn “Love Story”
Like in Lover’s lyrics, Swift doesn’t hold back about her deep feelings for boyfriend Joe Alwyn in her personal diary.
Clearly writing about Alwyn, the singer confessed about wanting to keep their relationship under wraps as much as possible.
“I’m essentially based in London, hiding out trying to protect us from the nasty world that just wants to ruin things,” she wrote in a January 2017 note. “We have been together and no one has found out for 3 months now. I want it to stay that way because I don’t want anything about this to change or become too complicated or intruded upon.”
“But it’s senseless to worry about someday not being happy when I am happy now,” she concluded. “OK. Breathe.”
But Swift wasn’t always so sure about love being real — especially when it came to Valentine’s Day.
“I somehow feel like it’s my destiny to roll my eyes at happy couples and resent Valentine’s Day. I also feel like I’m the girl before ‘the one.’ I’m not ‘the one,’” she wrote at 19. “I’m the girl you think is the one for you, and when it doesn’t work out with me, you meet the next girl and realize she IS the one.”
And as a mere 13 year old, she imagined the first time she’d have her first kiss — and about being “such a romantic.”
“I just dream about looking into someone’s eyes and feeling something I’ve never felt before, you know?” she wrote. “I just never was able to put a face to my fantacy [sic]. But something tells me that my first kiss is really far away from happening!”

The Night Before...
Before the 2014 Grammy Awards, Swift was confident her album Red would take home the biggest award of the night.
“It’s the middle of the night and I was at the Clive Davis party tonight which means… the Grammys are tomorrow,” she wrote. “Never have I felt so good about our chances. Never have I wanted something so badly as I want to hear them say ‘Red’ is the Album of the Year.”
Though she was up for four awards that year, Swift would head home empty handed.
Though she had won that award two years prior with Fearless, it wouldn’t be until her 2014 album 1989 that she’d take home the coveted prize again. In her 13-year career, Swift has won 10 Grammys from 32 nominations.

“This Might Be Worth Money Someday”
Though her diary entries are filled with some insight into the more complicated times in her life, the entries also feature some cute memories of her youth — including her middle school class schedule, some song lyrics and memories about listening to Sugarland for the first time.
Accompanied by drawings and the number 13, in her first journal entry, she signs her name and writes “(That could be worth money someday!! Just kidding hehe).”
Under “Journal #1,” a 13-year-old Swift writes a poem: “The world is as big as you make it / Never be shameful to fly / When a chance comes you should take it / May you never be scared of goodbye…”
After performing at a school talent show, Swift wrote: “I ❤ SCHOOL!”
Reminiscing on the grand day, Swift wrote, “I got a standing ovation and everything.”

Dusted’s Decade Picks: The Lists
Tumblr media
Protomartyr, who appear on at least three of these lists.
Of course, those picks from earlier today didn’t just manifest out of thin air; most (if not necessarily all) of us wound up coming up with some sort of decade-end list in the process of picking an album or two to ruminate upon, and a few that didn’t have specific pieces on singular works still had a little something to say about the decade just now passing away. Below the cut, then, is a more expansive but less wordy account of what various Dusted personnel found most personally essential in the 2010s. Enjoy!

Jason Gioncontere’s 10 From the 10s
Recency biases can render exercises such as these moot; fortunately my palate continues to evolve at a glacial pace. Compounding matters is the flash-cube sized attention span the Digital Age is leaving us with in its wake. If it hasn’t honestly hasn’t affected the way you digest and connect with music one iota you are luckier than I. From the opening notes I knew all these albums below were a different beast, each and every time I am left with no choice but to go on the journey in its entirety as intended. Best efforts were made to sequence these in number of rotations:
David Nance - Calling Christine (CDR, 2016)
Helen - The Original Faces (Kranky, 2015)
Dreamdecay - N V N V N V (Iron Lung, 2013)
Uniform - Wake in Fright (Sacred Bones, 2017)
Lou Barlow -  Brace the Wave (Joyful Noise, 2015)
Protomartyr - Under Color of Official Right (Hardly Art, 2014)
Axis:Sova - Weight of a Color (Kill Shaman, 2012)
Beachglass - Clouding (Bandcamp, 2017)
Birds of Maya - Ready to Howl (Richie, 2010)
La Hell Gang - Thru Me Again (Mexican Summer, 2014)
Jennifer Kelly’s 2010s Favorites
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds — Push the Sky Away (Bad Seed Ltd., 2013)
Protomartyr — Under Colour of Official Right (Hardly Art, 2014)
Sleaford Mods — Divide and Exit (Harbinger Sound, 2014)
Meg Baird — Don’t Weigh Down the Light (Drag City, 2015)
Heron Oblivion — Heron Oblivion (Sub Pop, 2016)
Amy Rigby — The Old Guys (Southern Domestic, 2018)
Steve Gunn — The Unseen in Between (Matador, 2019)
Patois Counselors — Proper Release (Ever/Never, 2018)
Damien Jurado — Maraqopa (Secretly Canadian, 2012)
Skull Defekts — Peer Amid (Thrill Jockey, 2011)
Jack Rose — Luck in the Valley (Thrill Jockey, 2010)
Rangda — False Flag (Drag City, 2010)
Tim Clarke’s A Baker’s Dozen From the 2010s
In a nod to The Quietus’s regular feature, here are 13 albums that have meant a lot to me in recent years. I’m sure there have been musical trends during the 2010s more worthy of coverage than a personal list of favorites, but if one thing’s clear from this list it’s that, for better or worse, my taste hasn’t changed much in the ensuing years and is rarely swayed by the flavor of the month (or year, or decade). Most of this is expansive guitar-based stuff, and they’re all albums I don’t hesitate to revisit to this day. So, if that sounds like your bag, you can’t go wrong with any of these, presented in alphabetical order:
Big Thief — U.F.O.F. (4AD, 2019)
Chris Cohen — Overgrown Path (Captured Tracks, 2012)
Loma — Loma (Sub Pop, 2018)
Sandro Perri — Impossible Spaces (Constellation, 2011)
Radiohead — A Moon Shaped Pool (XL, 2016)
Roommate — Make Like (Strange Weather, 2015)
Andy Shauf — The Party (Arts & Crafts, 2016)
Shearwater — Animal Joy (Sub Pop, 2012)
Chad VanGaalen — Light Information (Sub Pop, 2017)
Mark Van Hoen — Where is the Truth? (City Centre Offices, 2010)
The Walkmen — Lisbon (Fat Possum, 2010)
Wild Beasts — Smother (Domino, 2011)
Women — Public Strain (Jagjaguwar, 2010)

I have the big writer’s block so I don’t have much but uhhh how about some good ol fashioned squad fluff with ray and the kids?
OKAY I HAD THIS ALL TYPED OUT AND IT WAS PERFECT BUT THEN MY LAPTOP FREAKING REFRESHED THE PAGE AND I LOST IT. HHHHHH
I hope I remember it well enough
(I feel that writer’s block frustration. It’s a mcfreakin’ pain in the butt, my dude.)
I made it a little goofy as well as fluffy bc I really like the comedic dynamic of HD. I hope you like it!!!! :)))))
I just got back from a beach trip, so let’s go with that
it’s summer in Swellview and it’s crazy hot
that summer heat is taking no prisoners
Ray is down in the Man Cave and everytime the elevator opens up, it lets out all the hot and stuffy air from the store
he’s all “no. nope. not happening. I’m here sweating when I could be on the beach sipping from a coconut with one of those frilly umbrellas. this is unacceptable.”
he calls Schwoz and the kids and tells them he’s taking them on a spontaneous beach trip
he says he wants them to come with bc he doesn’t want to be alone and look like a creep
but it’s really bc he enjoys their company and wants them to have fun
he sends the kids home to get ready while he closes shop
“Can Piper come?” “Who’s Piper?” “My little sister, Ray.” “Aw, no. Is she that little loud girl?” “I guess she can be loud? Anyway, can she come or not?” “I feel like saying ‘not’ would make me a bad person but I really don’t want to say yes….” “Come on, man.” “UuuuuUUUggggGGGGhhhHHH fine. Paper can come.”
they all pile into Ray’s car
the ride there is a bit chaotic bc the beach is 45 min away and the car is cramped and it’s hot and no one can agree on a radio station to listen to
“Henry, I’m not going to say it again. Move. Over.” “Piper, I’m not even touching you.” “You’re about to touch me.” “Are you kidding me?” “No, I’m not.” “Where do you want me to move? There’s only so many seats in the car.” “I don’t care. I can feel the heat coming from your gross body.” “Okay, I’m not gross, for one, and I would scoot over if Jasper would get in his seat.”
“I already told you I can’t be by the window. I get carsick.” “Then why did you choose the window seat?” “Because I get claustrophobic in the middle seat.”
“Henry, I’m gonna kill him.” Char overhears and intervenes. “Hey, Piper, why don’t you sit with me on the way back?”
Ray heard all of their bickering, so he rolled the top down to cool them all off
as soon as they got to the beach, Schwoz shot out of the car blurting out something about having to pee
Ray packed food from the auto-snacker (sandwiches, chips, fruit, etc.–things he thought the kids would like), so he grabs the ice chests full of food/drink while the kids get their stuff
there isn’t too many people on the beach, so they don’t have a problem finding a quiet spot
Char x Piper get Hen to take pics of them right where the waves meet the sand
Piper posts them with captions like “beach day with my best-ay” and some lyrics about summer
she even takes a few with Hen for their parents
Jasper brought wayyyyy too much sunscreen
“I don’t joke about my skin care. Skin cancer is not a joke. Do you think I maintain this ivory color by not using sunscreen?”
Piper agrees with him bc she’s fair-skinned too
Hen doesn’t like it too much bc he doesn’t like how it feels, but it beats sunburn
Ray, however, won’t use it.
“I’m indestructible. The sun is no match for me.” “It’s literally a ball of fire in the sky.” “Psh. I’ve had worse.”
the kids don’t agree with him, but they know arguing is futile so they let it go
Hen brought a beach ball and some paddles with a matching little ball
the Harts used to go to the beach a lot, so Hen had a lot of stuff to choose from
he and Piper team up like they used to when they were younger and together they are un-beatable
like
no one else wins. at all.
they have this ridiculous handshake/victory dance they do every time they win and it’s so over-the-top (like Ross x Monica’s new years dance routine for you friends fans)
even Ray thinks it’s a bit much
Char x Jasp have no idea what to think
they’ve never seen Hen like this
“I always thought Piper was the scary one.” “I know. Did you see Hen’s face when I scored a point?” “He looked like he was going to kill you.” “Yeah, and Piper looked like she was going to help him get rid of any evidence.”
(I like that little ride or die sibling bit ajksjslksj)
Schwoz comes back from the restroom and Ray scoops him up, running to the water to throw the little man in
everyone joins in
the tide is pretty rough and Ray’s a little worried
esp for Char and Schwoz and whatever her name is bc they’re all pretty short
Hen is chasing Jasp x Piper, pretending to be Jaws
a pretty big wave comes and washes over all of them
Hen x Jasp are okay bc they could just easily stand up but Piper is a lot shorter
Hen starts freaking out when she doesn’t come up
Ray is worried too
he sees the little girl and immediately yanks her out of the water and into the air
“Paper! Paper! Are you okay???”
she swallowed a good bit of nasty saltwater that burned her throat/nose, but she’s okay
“It’s Piper.”
Hen sighs in relief, moving the hair out of her face. “She’s fine.”
they take a break from the water for a bit to eat lunch
Ray unpacks the food he brought for them
Hen x Jasp eat their lunch on an inflatable unicorn inner tube :)
Piper takes some more pics of the gang eating
she records a snapchat video of Hen being attacked by a swarm of seagulls after his sandwich
he takes off down the beach after them but gives up, hoping the birds at least enjoy it as much as he did
he doesn’t bother asking Pipes to delete it bc he knows she won’t
after lunch Hen x Char go off alone to collect seashells
Hen finds a really pretty spiral shell to give to his mom
Jasper tries to get Ray to at least put on a little sunscreen, but Ray is still being ridiculous
Piper is flying a kite, but Schwoz keeps pestering her about using a new device he created that’s supposed to make the kite fly ten times higher
she lets him do it just to shut him up, but it goes wrong
the string gets cut, and her favorite kite flies away just like the birds did with Hen’s sandwich
she’s furious
Ray jumps between them just in time
a second later and Schwoz would be pummeled
“Look, Paper, I know he’s an idiot, but I kind of need him, so if you could just not kill him, I’d really appreciate it.”
“Its. Piper.”
Hen x Char return from collecting shells and everyone gets back in the water
he won’t let Piper go out in water that reaches any higher than her stomach (she put up a fight but she agreed, not wanting to drink anymore disgusting water)
Jasp x Hen played a game where they’d wait for a big wave and then turn around so that they could fall backwards into it
a fish brushed against Schwoz’ leg, and he tried to jump up on Char to get out of the water
she just dropped him so the he ended up going under right where there was a school of fish
Ray let Char x Piper get on his back so he could tow them around
he also picked them up so he could toss them into the water (playfully, of course)
a fish nibbled Jasper’s foot, and he wanted to catch it so he could bring it home as a pet
no one could catch it, and there was no way of telling which fish it was
Hen got a pretty gnarly sting from a jellyfish, so they all decided it was time to get out of the water
the sun was beginning to set anyway so the others weren’t too upset about getting out
there was still some food left over from lunch, so Ray made a little campfire and they all ate a light dinner
they watched the sun dip down below the horizon line
the sky turned dark
Ray reached behind his back and pulled out a surprise: s’mores
Hen’s leg was still hurting so Ray handed the s’more fixings to Piper
“Here, Piper. Why don’t you make one for Henry?”
she just stared at him, shocked that he had used her real name for the first time
she didn’t say anything
she just took the food from Ray and made her brother a s’more just the way she knew he liked it: marshmallow extra crispy, chocolate extra gooey, and graham cracker as is
Ray smiled to himself, knowing Piper’s reaction was bc he’d remembered her name
he didn’t call any attention to it though, knowing neither of them wanted that
they ate their s’mores in comfortable silence
Char noticed Schwoz was smiling mischieviously
“Schwooooooz…..why are you making that face?”
he just giggled and produced a small guitar from behind his back
everyone groaned
“What? What? Why the not happy sounds?” Ray just rolls his eyes. “Because, Schwoz, no one wants to hear you play.” “Why? What’s wrong with my tunes?” “Your ‘tunes’ sound like a dying cat.” “So does your singing, but I never tell you you can’t.”
he plays anyway and…he’s actually…..really….good???
“Schwoz, where’d you learn to play like that?” “I had lessons.” “When? You never leave the Man Cave?” “………from Lelani….”
Char keeps Ray from jabbing Schwoz with his hot s’mores stick
Schwoz keeps strumming away while they all sit around the campfire, listening to it crackling, listening to the waves crashing against the shore, watching the light flicker on everyone’s faces, watching the smoke from the fire rise up the the stars
the kids almost fell asleep, but Ray got them up and in the car, deciding it was time to go home
he let them get seated while he packed everything up
the kids did fall asleep on the drive home
Ray kept the hood down so the cool night breeze makes its way to everyone
he finds an alternative station that’s playing a slow, soft, hypnotic song that’s perfect for night drives
he keeps checking on everyone in his rear view mirror and smiles big when he sees them all sleeping soundly in the same seating arrangements that had caused problems before
Hen x Piper are leaning against each other when they’d been complaining about being too close before
Jasp is propped against the window, no longer needing to worry about getting car sick since he’s sleeping
Char even let Schwoz use her as a makeshift pillow despite the fact that he drools
Ray turned the radio up a little bit
he drove on under the yellow street lights in the quiet night, listening to the quiet pulsing song, feeling perfectly content and happy
it had been a good day
bonus:
Ray wakes up the next morning and screams at the top of his lungs
he’s as red as a stop sign
he got sunburned after all (just as everyone else knew he would)
“Sun: 1 Ray: 0″

Due to some scheduling kerfuffles at the station, the July 2, 2018 instalment of The Midway will last longer and start a whole lot earlier! Coming to your receivers from 6AM-10AM MST, tune in for our post-Canada Day extravaganza.
The theme of this episode is a simple one: what is the best Canadian artist/song you’ve discovered in 2018? It can be a new release, or any Canadian that you weren’t previously aware of - regardless of era.
