ok ok ok so magnus chase is my entire hyperfixation rn so lemme just rant for a sec. ok it is so so so good and funny. basically it's centred around annabeth's cousin magnus, a homeless teenager living on the streets since his mom died, with his two friends/parental figures blitz and hearth. long story short maggie 's creepy uncle randolph tells him he's the son of a Norse god, and then not ten minutes later (spoilers) magnus fucking dies fighting this bad guy named surt, and is taken to hotel valhalla, the afterlife for Norse warriors. and that's just, like, the first five chapters.

and YES they live in boston. I don't live there but if you like that city you'd love love love this book because boston is basically to Norse gods what new york is to greek gods. there's so many references to famous landmarks and stuff. it's awesome.

as for reading order, I'm pretty sure it takes place at the same time as toa but I read them before toa and I wasn't at all confused. the three books all take place in like six months so there's not a lot of time between them.

ALSO. the REPRESENTATION? did someone say pansexual atheist formerly homeless main character. did someone say badass hijabi muslim main character. did someone say deaf asl user main character. did someone say latino genderfluid main character. did someone say talking sword that sings selena gomez.

also percy himself makes a cameo in the third book.

Who's your favorite PJO character ?

Might as well ask me to pick my favorite strand of hair off my head this is HARD

I'd say just in the PJO (greco-roman) series, probably Zoe, I think her character arc and her backstory were all so well done, especially since she was only in one book. She's also consistently remembered, which is nice, and I think her death genuinely had an impact on Percy. Titans Curse is when things really went to shit lmao.

Overall (including Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase) definitely Hearth and Blitz, the icons that they are for having homoerotic subtext in a book narrated by a queer person.

magnus is an underrated character in his own series

lester/apollo and magnus were BY far the funniest narrators

i didn't like jason's death but it was necessary and it made sense

i actually liked meg, she had a great storyline and she wasn't annoying

piper was queer from the beginning

with enough training hazel could probably be stronger than percy and jason

percy would end jason in a fight in two seconds flat

reyna, samirah, and hazel are the most badass rrverse women ever

i love toa but if i had to choose i would rather have five mcga books and three toa books

fierrochase and zarter are the most underrated ships in the fandom im right

mcga had HUGE potential as a series and rick def could have done more with it and added more books but didn't and i am very mad about that

rick's representation is very flawed both in poc's and lgbtq characters

(the feather in the hair, the food skin color descriptions, the fact that the only three latinx/hispanic characters come from abusive backgrounds, making leo call calypso "mamacita" in tdp, giving poc characters inherently non poc traits (hazels hair and eyes and pipers eyes), having samirah's hair out of her hijab at some points, making anubis white (biggie on that one), making his only book series with two mixed race main characters have three books instead of five)

(the genderfluid shapeshifter trope, outing nico and giving him the most trauma out of the seven but "hey it's okay because he gets a boyfriend", giving leo a girlfriend when he was very obviously into jason (and even then he didn't need to date anyone i really like the head canon that he is aro), making a slur of sorts for alex and having multiple main characters say it, making his only book series with a very openly queer main character (alex but also magnus at the end) have three books instead of five)

leo did NOT need to get a girlfriend, he should have stayed single as it was better for his character development

tj needs more recognition in the fandom i love him

annabeth was def one of the more powerful of the seven even though she didn't have powers and a lot of the people that hate her are just misogynistic (as well as piper)

This is a weekly event, 5 fanfic recommendations per week. It was supposed to be stuff I've read recently but I fell down the rabbithole that is my bookmarks page so that's been delayed for a bit. If anyone wants recs for a specific fandom, let me know, my AO3 bookmarks are formidably extensive.

Hazel is spending her 16th summer at the Chase Space in Boston. A regular visit with Blitz at his shop turns into a hairstyling extravaganza which turns into deeper exploration of her past and how she wants to move past it. With a little help from T.J., Frank, and Nico, she begins to see herself as more than the girl who cheated death. (Featuring happy, peaceful days at the Chase Space and cameos by Samirah, Alex, Magnus, Hearth.)

Hazel is my underappreciated Beloved and this fic is so insanely awesome. Slice of life, warm and happy and life-affirming.

Future fic about Percy becoming a teacher at Camp Half-Blood. It's so so fluffy and hopeful and awesome and it makes me want to CRY.

4. Being Us by HonorH

Starting with the three days in the infirmary, Nico di Angelo learns to heal as he and Will Solace negotiate their relationship, discovering how two people so unlike each other can become "Us."

This is a very, very long series and it might be my favorite Percy Jackson fic Of All Time. It's got worldbuilding like crazy, explores Nico's child of Hades powers in-depth, and features an ensemble cast of demigods focusing on the Apollo Cabin. It will make you laugh and cry and everything in between. I am deeply, deeply invested in some of the original demigod characters in this fic even years after reading it. It haunts me.

5. Staccato by decayaslife

The first time Nico hears Italian in the camp infirmary he nearly impales himself on the scalpel in his hand. Once the shock wears off he discovers that not only are the Apollo kids proficient in the language of music, they’re also all horrible gossips. In which Will shamelessly pines behind a perceived language barrier and Nico just lets him.

I am such a sucker for language barriers (real or perceived) and this fic delivers. Pining, humor, and a happy ending.

favorite pjo characters?

Hello! This is a hard question for me because my favourites change depending on what I'm focusing on

In general, Leo is definitely one that's always going to be a favourite. His character just scratches my brain in all the right ways, and I have so many ideas with him that it's become an issue lmao (he's also the easiest for me to draw so um expect those ig)

Originally, Leo, Hazel and Frank were my favourite trio. So those two also get the favourite card from me lmao. I just have less ideas with them, so I don't focus as much on them, but the moment I do I'm going to be SO insufferable.

The lost trio also have a special place in my heart as they were the first characters I was introduced to! I liked Jason the (second) most of the 3 (after getting to Leo's first chapter), and Piper had attacked me personally, so I had a love/hate relationship with her for a few years haha. I appreciate her more now and the 3 are roomies in my brain with Frank and Hazel a door down.

Jason and Piper are so interesting for characters that didn't get explored as much as I wish they did and now I'm here playing detective with fake people on a page💀

Otherwise, Lester, Magnus, Hearth, Blitz, Alex, Sam, Amir, Coach Hedge, and some of Floor 19 were all various characters I really liked from their respective series! Unfortunately, I can't remember much of tKC so I don't have as much connection to any of them other than the vague memory of liking the Kane siblings and Bast

alex fierro headcanons because i haven't posted anything of my own in a while:

- very picky eater. she especially hates burnt food.

- one of her favorite activities is just sitting on the huge tree in the courtyard of valhalla and drawing people she can see from up there.

- she has a slight hint of a mexican accent, but not too much while speaking in english, so you wouldn't notice it if you didn't pay close attention. it does come out more when she speaks her own language.

- her face has that thing where though she blushes, it doesn't show up much.

- i've always seen her as having warm undertones.

- she's a bookmark hoarder. makes bookmarks, collects them, but ends up either folding the corner of the page or leaving the book open on its back.

- she hates it when a book's spine cracks though, or even if the spine wrinkles. it irritates her.

- she's a very fast typer.

- the type of person to hate sharpening because "it wastes the pencil" and so uses all her sharp pencils and then delays sharpening again by just using blunt pencils until she HAS to sharpen at least one. which she tries to put off again until samirah just does it without telling her one day.

- a good babysitter despite all her chaos. she is surprised herself, but she has a good relationship with kids in general.

- cannot follow a schedule ever. she tries her best, fills out the schedule and all that, but she is incapable of sticking to it no matter what.

- very close to blitz and hearth. she almost considers them her elder siblings like magnus.

as a bisexual girl, the way Rick treats women, especially sapphic women, doesn't sit right with me.

i know there are still braindead stans who think is rep is immaculate or whatever, but if they actually read any book by a queer woman ( not that they'do it because they only care about queer rep when cishet write it and therefore when it's digestible to them) they'd notice the difference.

back when i never read books by queer women, i was amazed by rr rep.

now it makes me truly laugh and i can't believe i ever thought the queer and female rr rep was revolutionary (i was in my liberal era lol, i was 12 and i grew up, i promise) but you know what they say, when you're starving crumbs seem a loaf to you, but when you actually eat bread you realize the crumbs weren't really satisfying.

he literally either sees women as strong™ and non girly (annabeth, piper, hazel, reyna etc) or girly and evil™ (drew, aphrodite, circe)and he doesn't give them nuance, either.

like if you read the book circe ( i really recommend it, though check tws!) you'd see how madeline miller writes circe with nuance and doesn't make her one dimensional and how even things like turning men into pigs take a whole new light considering the circumstances.

rr doesn't do that. drew is just mean and literally looks like every cheeleader bully of 2000s movies, quite a cliché.

no matter that she had a point about silena and she was allowed to feel hurt and mad about silena's betrayal, she's just mean™ and hates silena and she's the antagonistic character as opposed to piper who is clearly better because she's not girly and she doesn't care about getting her nails dirty (this is not an attack to piper, she's actually my favorite hoo character! this is why i hate the way rr wrote her and this is why i wrote a fic about drew and piper becoming friends and being vulnerable to eachother!)

many people pointed out how rr can't see women not having a boyfriend and when they don't, they always have some kind of status that makes them maidens? like, thalia and reyna with the hunt, rachel with the oracle (just so she wouldn't be an obstacle to percabeth) too much cases to call it coincidences.

and about the sapphic characters : lavinia mentions her liking girls but we don't even get to meet her girlfriend ONCE and emmie and jo have pretty marginal roles... piper kisses a girl, okay, and the only thing we know is that her name is shel..

if had to talk in depth i would spend hours, but the thing is that rick has an habit of queercoding characters and not making them queer (es leo, blitz, hearth) in reyna and piper's case, it was handled in a shitty way (can't speak for reyna being ace but i heard many ace women complain)

like ignoring how many sapphics, especially lesbians, saw themselves in her and also ignoring ace sapphic women exist?

then again he tried to make up with lavinia, emmie and jo and shel but I'm not quite sure he did... anyway I'm just rambling but yeah, rr should do better and people should stop treating him and his books as the pinnacle of queer and female rep.

Aziraphale’s Library Festive Countdown: Week 1

Hey all, Mod B here! If you were here last December, you will know that I compiled a vast array of festive fic recs to celebrate the holiday season. While I felt it would be too draining to make a rec list every day again, I still wanted to do a countdown and recommend some festive fics, so this year I’ll be making a rec list every week until the 31st! The Adventure of the Angel Detective by MostWeakHamlets 1892. Crowley can't think of a gift worthy of giving to Aziraphale. Fortunately, he's not above a little petty crime to make his angel feel like his favorite detective for an evening.

This is a super fun and creative story, which takes brilliant advantage of the time period and has many fun nods to Sherlock Holmes stories. I love the mystery element and, despite being staged, the mystery itself is amusing and engaging.

Angel Actually by ineffablebadger “Crowley raised his eyebrow, paused for a moment, and reached for his coffee. His fingers brushed against Aziraphale’s hand delicately as he grabbed the cup, causing the blond’s heart to pound in his chest. Crowley glanced up at Aziraphale before lifting the drink to his mouth and taking a sip.” It’s the day of the Home, Hearth and Garden Christmas Party. Aziraphale sits next to his handsome colleague Crowley at dinner.

I am a sucker for an office romance fic, and this human AU nails every trope it takes advantage of. I loved Anathema and Aziraphale’s friendship, and Crowley and Aziraphale had some wonderfully sweet and awkward interactions.

As The Light Seeps Into The Dark by ArcheaMajuar “Do you know any Christmas carols?” “What?” Crowley mumbled, withdrawing from Aziraphale a bit, so he could speak properly, “I haven’t been one to celebrate it, so…” “Would you like to hear some?” “You mean… you will sing?” “Yes, of course!” Silence for a few seconds. “Go ahead.”

A gloriously fluffy fic, which was a joy to read.

Best House on the Block by bethagain Newt loves all the new-fangled fancy Christmas decorations, but they're all controlled by computer chips. Which means, they don't love him.

A cute story that has fun with Newt’s technologically disastrous tendancies, and is very heartwarming.

Concerning Mistletoe, Mince Pies, and the Lady of the Lake by argyle4eva On a cozy midwinter evening in the South Downs, Aziraphale tells Crowley the tale of his involvement with King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

A well written, creative fic that combines mythology and modern christmas traditions to create a very interesting story, in addition to soft moments with the ineffable husbands.

Of Lists, Lazy Days, and Bragging Rights by argyle4eva A short followup to "Concerning Mistletoe, Mince Pies, and the Lady of the Lake," in which Crowley can't resist running part of his speculative list past Aziraphale. A bit of fun for New Year's Day; may 2020 be kind to everyone.

The sequel to the fic above, this short extra continues the ineffable’s fun coversation and lighthearted atmosphere

The Nights Grow Long, But Dreams Live On by Domina_Temporis In the middle of the Blitz, after their reunion at the church, Aziraphale and Crowley celebrate Christmas. Hidden away by the blackout curtains and the sound of bombs, they may just feel safe enough to confess how they really feel...

Last but certainly not least, I ardently reccomend this fic that manages to nail both the Angsty elements, sweetness, and overall hopeful feel. It was a wonderful read, enjoyable and unique.

I'm not sure if you still take these but, a thought. I feel like elves generally have a very organic diet in Alfheim so theres a lot of veg and whole foods. When Hearth gets to Midgard his body doesn't know how to process all of the sugar found in our food so he gets all hyper giggly and jittery and LOVES it while Blitz is just like *tired sigh*

Yessss omg ok this is one of my favorite headcanons I don't think I've posted about before. One of the headcanons that's pretty much just canon to me is that 1) Hearthstone has a huuuge sweet tooth 2) Hes got pretty much a bottomless pit for a stomach. I just imagine if no one stops him he'd literally keep eating till he made himself sick from being too full, kinda like a puppy who just doesn't realize they can only eat so much. He's also got a pretty iron stomach too I think, not picky at all, and he's very stubborn about trying to eat things that are past their expiration date or burned food, finding it wasteful to toss it out. Though he definitely prefers sweets and highly sugary food, especially a big fan of colorful tooth rotting cereal that's normally marketed for kids. Though to me all of his issues with food trace back to two major traumas in his life. The first obviously being his time spent homeless watching over Magnus with Blitzen, never knowing when or where they'd find their next meal and couldn't afford to turn down any chance for food. And the bigger one being his childhood struggling to work off a fucking life debt. If you recall food was one of the things listed on his walls that'd he would have to pay gold coins for. There's no doubt in my mind he'd probably go as long as he could without eating, days at a time, trying to save up more coins. And there's no way the food he got was very good, I'd guess just enough to keep him alive. Thus not so much that the elven diet doesn't have a lot of sugar, but rather he just never got treats like that as a child. So uh yeah sorry this started out fluffy but turned to some angst haha

Ranking the MCGA Audiobook Readers

For those of you who don’t know, there are 3 different people who narrate the MCGA audibooks, one for each book. I have no idea why. As far as I can tell, changing a reader is par for the course once, but three times in a trilogy is... kinda funny, actually. Anyway

Third Place: Christopher Guetig.

This one’s personal. I just really don’t like Guetig’s voice. Sorry, man. That’s my main gripe, and it’s not even a good one. Also, the way he reads the lines is a gross reminder that these books were written in 2015. I can’t put my finger on explaining it, but the joke delivery sends me straight back to the humor of the 2010s. Didn’t age well. Don’t like his voice. Plus side? He does accents and voices consistently and pretty well! He tried his best.

Second Place: Keiran Culkin

Points for the alliterative name. I do like his voice a lot better than Guetig’s, and I think it probably sells the idea of a simotaneously mature and childish kid of 16 years best of all three. He loses points for being weird about different character’s voices. Some characters who were clearly written with accents in mind (i.e. Mallory Keen and a couple others) won’t have them. And then for some characters, the voice will change a couple of times. I think I noticed that with Alex and Blitz the most; Blitz gets what I presume is a South Boston accent part of the way through if I’m not wrong. The worst case of this was Utgard-Loki in his voice fluctuating disguise. Culkin would switch how he performs Utgard-Loki’s lines mid-sentences. Still, all-around a good performance. 

First Place: Michael Crouch

I like his voice a lot! Doesn’t sound like every teenage guy I know, but I know some with a register even lower, so we’ll let it slide. He does accents pretty consistently for different characters, and they’re all pretty distinguishable (with the exception of Blitz, who he does not give an accent at all. I could still always tell who was talking, though, so A+). Also, this was the first audiobook of the trilogy I listened to on my re-read, and I was so nervous that he was going to pull some semi-transphobic bs in how he voiced Alex. But Crouch made Alex sound exactly how I always imagined him in the pace and flow of his words, if not really the voice. Loki was also pretty fun to listen to speak. Additionally, his joke-delivery is the most deadpan, which is more my style of humor. Generally a good time!! Probably part of the reason SotD is my favorite.

General notes:

Every narrator voiced Samirah pretty much the same way? It was, like, the only constant they had throughout the books.

They all pretty much just do Magnus’s internal voice for Hearth, too, in case you were wondering.

I really want to know why they switched twice. At first I assumed Geutig didn’t want to voice a queer protagonist, but that wouldn’t explain why Culkin didn’t carry over, either. 

There are so many soundbites I want to make into Tik Toks

A lot of these little things I probably wouldn’t have noticed had I not listened to each audiobook more than twice. Oops.

Coincidentally, my favorite narrators correspond to the order of the books they narrate. Geutig voices SoS, Culkin voices HoT, and Crouch voices SotD

I don’t mean any disrespect to any of these people! I don’t know anything about them! Please know I’m not trying to be mean but instead I’m just sharing my thoughts
