escapism ♡ | monkey d. luffy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: monkey d. luffy x reader
warnings: SPOILERS FOR ONE PIECE SERIES AND FILM RED, 1.5k words, hurt/comfort fic, angst with happy ending, established relationship, luffy's bad coping mechanisms
synopsis: sometimes talking your feelings out is the only way to heal, but it's difficult when luffy doesn't know how to.
Tumblr media
LUFFY never really liked overcomplicated emotions-- especially negative ones. Usually, he'd try to brush them away and carry out the rest of his day as though they never existed in the first place. It was wearing him out though, the typical excitement he'd act out in everyday tasks, even the mundane ones, were quick to make him lethargic.
The way his elastic limbs would spark to life like the brightest of fireworks suddenly dwindled, offering only mere fizzles of energy before burning out. The way Luffy's eyes became far dimmer than the way that they once shined, almost like the finest of jewels that no treasure could compare to unexpectedly lacking its luster.
There was something wrong with Luffy, and everyone in the crew was worried sick over their captain's well-being. You were no different in the manner, longing like no other to see your captain look up at you and smile, a genuine one that could wash away your worries in an instant. It was a selfish desire to seek out from him, especially in his time of grief.
He didn't seem to recognize it as a form of coping, brushing it off and filing it away in his mind as something that could be dealt with later, after he's King of the Pirates. Whenever he was confronted by any of the other crewmates, he would quickly reassure them that he was fine. The obliviousness of his true emotions, to the despair, that he was feeling was becoming his downfall, sinking him deeper into this dour mood that he had no control of.
Realizing that there was no way that he would be able to feel better on his own, you decided to take matters into your own hands to confront him. Coming to this conclusion, you waited until the time was right, when no prying eyes would be there to watch the scene unravel, and when Luffy would be separated from the others. He would do that far more than usual, sitting atop the Sunny with a stare that would linger on what was ahead of him, refusing to look back on whatever was building up behind him, wearing him thin.
You were cautious, and apprehensive even as you made your way to approach your eerily quiet partner, who was staring off into the distance. "[Y/N]." He was quick to notice your presence, although the space held between the two of you was rather far. The tone he held was soft, a volume that never really suited Luffy in the slightest. He was far too bright, and energetic to carry such notions out, but that was one of the many reasons that you adored him.
"Hi, Luffy." You greeted, climbing up the ladder that was built behind Sunny's head to provide your captain some company. He didn't say anything after your greeting, but he did turn his head to offer you a grin that didn't quite reach his eyes. He was trying to pull himself together after everything with Uta, with seeing Shanks and his crew grieving, and how he wasn't able to do the same as easily. No one here could relate to their connection, much like with Ace.
The feeling of loneliness surrounded him once again, and he didn't like it. You smiled back at him, reaching out to glide your fingertips on top of his hand. He turned his hand around, allowing you to entangle your fingers with his own, squeezing his hand lightly. "You know you can always talk to me, right?" You spoke softly, turning your head away from him to search for what he was looking for ahead of him.
Perhaps it answered all the questions that were clouding his head, or maybe it was simply a distraction from what he didn't want to see. As much as you wanted to figure it out, you didn't know. "When things are good or even bad, I want to know everything you have to say. I want to be able to laugh with you when things make you happy, and I want to cry with you when things are sad," You began, noticing how the ship swayed with the slow tides, almost like a rocking chair that was trying to ease the solemn atmosphere.
"I want to know what you're feeling like, Lu. I want you to be open and honest with me when you're down because I'm here for you." Turning your body slightly, you used your other hand to tilt his head in your direction, to where he was finally facing you.
You frowned at his lack of response, from the way his eyes purposefully looked away from yours. Your thumb circled his cheek lightly, while the other rubbed his knuckles, trying to soothe him in any way that he would allow you to. Rushing him to spill everything that was on his plate was the last thing that he needed. Everything depended on his trust in you, and coaxing him was no way to gain it. Despite Luffy's cheerful and aloof persona, he held a sense of maturity that grew over time.
Throughout all of the triumphs that he has experienced, there have been even more losses that you weren't even aware of. So many sore spots still existed for Luffy, ones that were prominent enough to draw him into silence.
You wanted nothing more than to take all of the load off of his shoulders so he could be as free as he dreams of being. Words couldn't express those feelings of longing, of love that you felt for Luffy, and you wanted to give all the good things in life that he deserves.
You simply wished he knew how much you cared. "Please say something, anything." You couldn't utter anything above a whisper, stopping your tender caresses to his cheek to let your hand lay lax to your side. The desperateness in your tone seemed to be recognized by Luffy because only then, he was able to muster the will to look into your eyes. The way the tears in his eyes made his eyes glisten, his bottom lip quivering at a fast pace, almost as if he was putting all his effort into holding back the waterworks from erupting.
"Oh, Luffy..." You mumbled sadly, quickly placing your hand back on his cheek to wipe away the tears that were beginning to cascade down his tan cheeks. A hiccup escaped past his lips before everything he was trying to hold together fell apart right in front of your very eyes. Yes, he was the captain of the Straw Hat pirates, one of the Four Emperors of the sea, but he was human first.
His head hung low, doing the only thing he knew to release all of the pent-up emotions that had distorted his mind-- he cried, hard too. You delicately guided him to nestle his head into the crook of your neck. His hands clung to your body tighter than he ever had before, and you instinctively held him in return, rubbing circles onto his back.
You whispered sweet nothings into his ear, reassuring any worries that he had stored up in his mind as it only made him weep harder. "I keep... I keep losing people I care about!" He chortled out through his wails that were slowly drawing out. His hands gripped the fabric of your shirt, wiping away the tears that never seemed to stop. "I could've done something to change it!" "Luffy, you did everything in your power that you could. Nothing that happened is your fault." You said to him, but Luffy disagreed with your words, shaking his head against your shoulder as he raised his head.
"I could've done more! I could've saved her, just like with Ace, but I'm still too weak," He argued, lifting his head to face you. "Every time, I'm just not strong enough when I need to be. What happens next time if I lose you too?" His red-stained eyes looked at you, his voice filled with worry about the future and all the possibilities of what could go wrong.
"You won't. I plan on staying until I see you fulfill your dream." You hummed softly, holding his face in the palm of your hands. "And afterward?" He mumbled, nuzzling his wet cheeks into your warm hands. "I'll still be there, by your side," Sealing your promise, you placed a tender kiss on his forehead, strands of his black hair tickling your nose in a feather-like manner.
"By the time we're old, you'll be begging me to get off your back." Moving your head down, you pressed a chaste kiss onto Luffy's lips, taking his hands into your lap, and squeezing them lightly. As you were beginning to pull back, Luffy chased your lips to meet his once again with a kiss that was deeper than the last.
The taste of salt from his tears made its way onto his lips, a sorrowful thing making its way into something far more delightful. By the time he pulled away, a smile, a real one, was stretched across his charming features, making your heart melt at the sight.
"Shishishi, I don't think I could ever get tired of you."
