Note: this is purely about making new purchases, NOT about participating with the fandom or source material as a whole. That would be an entirely separate poll.
@crewdlydrawn thanks for the distinction.
I'm asking this because I, a cis-adjacent lgbt person and a trans ally, personally do not purchase new Harry Potter merch or anything else that will put a dime in JKR's pocket. I thought that was a relatively common mentality. But I have multiple trans friends who enthusiastically bought the new game and buy other new merch, so I'm wondering how the choice to boycott or not relates to the lgbt+ community.
Yes, I do know that it'll be difficult to get a completely accurate poll given that many people no doubt have Harry Potter blacklisted and therefore won't see it. But I'm hoping that I get a decent representation nevertheless.
Also, if you're comfortable with it, pretty please let us know why in the tags!
PLEASE REBLOG FOR WIDER AUDIENCE! THANKS 😊
Edit number who the fuck knows: DON'T GET NASTY WITH EACH OTHER! Also, if you're a transphobe then buhbye. We're not talking to you.

The way tomarry has the best dynamics if we ignore tom brutally murdering harry's parents and everyone he holds dear. (Ok that sounded insane but hear me out)
- they're the only two known parseltongue speakers. (they would be FREAKS in bed)
- tom has a piece of his soul inside harry. he marked harry as his equal.
- they're both incredibly powerful in a "i understand you best" kinda way
- ENEMIES TO LOVERS
- literally made for each other. harry grounds tom and makes him a better person, while tom brings out the naughty (dark) and unhinged side of harry
- tom values his life the most but he would die for harry. harry values his moral very much, choosing to rarely use dark spells or ones that could other people. but he would kill for tom.
- THE SLYTHERIN HARRY AND TIME TRAVEL AU OMFG
- possessive tom riddle+not an idiot who can protect himself harry>>>
- harry putting tom in his place (as he should)
- AUs where tom is the minister of magic who's intrigue with auror harry potter>>>
- harry being sassy as always and tom who would usually hex the shit out of someone if they said that to him but tom's a simp so he just smirks
- "i hate everyone except you" and "i hate no one except you"
- tom riddle. what else is there to say. tom alone should be enough to convinve you
*Ofc, its only ok when the fics are legal. We stan age appropriate tomarry. Harrymort is still a bit icky but oh well.*
I used to dislike the idea of tomarry too. But the fics are just SO GOOD😭 Mindblowing. Pls give it a chance🫶🏽

"There is a huge appeal .... to black and white thinking. It's the easiest place to be and in many ways the safest place to be. An 'all or nothing' position on anything; you will definitely find comrades, you will easily find a community. We should mistrust ourselves the most when we are certain and we should question ourselves the most when we receive a rush of adrenaline by doing or saying something. Many people mistake that rush of adrenaline for the voice of conscious. ...Conscious speaks in a very small and inconvenient voice and its normally saying to you "Think again, look more deeply, consider this.""

Still remembering that one time I made a post talking about Snape and Trevor and this anti was in the comments calling Trevor “a defenceless animal,” as if they want me to give him a machine gun for a fair fight or something 💀

I'm probably the only one here who likes Cho Chang more than Ginny Weasley (PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I HV COMPANY). It's not because ginny ends up with Harry, I've objectively never cared abt the pairings in this series (except Grindledore), neither is it to spite Ginny as her fans might scream. Its just them as characters.
Personally, cho's just a lot more likable for me. She's sweet, friendly, brave, insanely loyal, and sticks by her beliefs no matter what (also ravenclaw rep). People really underestimate her loyalty, she was the only one who stood up to harry over hermione's insane trick with the DA parchment (i love u hermione but wtf) and supported her friend. And yet she didn't seem to have any friends to talk to about cedric, even her parents supported the ministry. I really don't blame her for her failed relationship with harry, she wasn't exactly in the right there, but both of them were just teenagers who didn't know how to handle complicated emotions, and at any rate harry was no saint either. She just needed a shoulder to cry on n just about no one was there for her. She was a sweet, sensitive girl and deserved someone who just loved her the way she was. Ik a lot of ppl complain abt representation in the hp series using cho as an example (yeah, the name certainly warrants tht), but as an asian myself, she and parvati patil are still my fav back round characters in the whole series.
I've already discussed in detail as to y i don't like ginny here and a little bit here
to summarize though, she became an important character only when harry needed a love interest, which is y her entire personality is just a cumulative of every single trait harry wants in his 'ideal woman' (confirmed by the author herself) instead of making her an interesting and layered character (not all characters need to have so much depth ofc, but she's one of the 'big seven' so its kinda a necessity). Her flaws r appreciated by the narrative, and her possession is completely ignored post book 3 (i've already detailed on y tht scene in ootp didn't hold good for me, its above). She even defends harry when he uses sectumsempra on malfoy, and personally, her humor just seemed like the author was trying very hard to make her funny and likable. It also seemed like her character was designed to somehow be better that cho's to appeal more to harry (not weepy, better at quiddich) I sorta liked her till book 5, but book 6 onwards i just rolled my eyes whenever she was on page.
Ultimately, I personally just prefer a sweet, sensitive, loyal girl over this over the top mean spirited character just filled to the brim with positive attributes. People often say that cho's character was just restricted to being harry's gf, but i don't think thts entirely true, she's a much more dynamic character than what people give her credit for.

one of the things I hate about snaters calling Snape an incel is the complete lack of understanding of what that word means. it means involuntary celibate. literally, one who wants to have sex but by no choice of his own doesn’t
(of course, incels are actually voluntarily celibate bc they choose to have disgusting personalities, but I digress)
let’s break it down
Celibate: one who doesn’t have sex.
Evidence: We never see Snape have sex.
Counter evidence: We never see anyone else have sex either bc it’s a child-friendly series.
Further counter evidence: The series is entirely from Harry’s pov. There is no reason for him to know that Snape gets bitches.
Involuntary: By no choice of his own.
Evidence: None, except a repeat of the above.
Counter evidence: Snape gets bitches. If he doesn’t have sex, then this is because he chooses to reject the bitches.
Conclusion
Snape may or may not have died a virgin. However, if he did, this is because he chose not to have sex with the many bitches who will have thrown themselves at him over the years.
Ergo, it is impossible for Snape to be an incel.

someone should really try to make a harry potter type story again but like, better. a lot of the ideas it gestures at are pretty compelling but it kind of consistently fumbles the follow-through.

Incoming Harry Potter Rant
Okay so recently after hearing about JK Rowling’s atrocious h0l0caust denial tweet she had made and reblogged a post about her here on Tumblr, it got me wondering.
Is it okay to interact with FANWORKS of Harry Potter?
Because for a month or so I kept having marauder’s content on my FYP on TikTok and it had sparked my interest since I’ve heard there’s good fics of it (such as ‘All the Young Dudes’) and I’ve gotten nostalgic about Harry Potter and missed the whole whimsical thing it used to have. I want to support smaller writers/artists rather than a billionaire terf.
But the thing about Harry Potter is that it was never good in the first place. The content inside the books is literal garbage (the goblins, werewolves as a weird metaphor for predatory gay men, the names of POC characters etc etc), all of it is fundamentally bad. Nevermind the fact, as I said earlier, that the author of these poorly-written books is a billionaire h0l0caust denying terf.
BTW I don’t plan on rereading the books, rewatching the movies, or buying her merch. But is it also bad to support anyone that stills writes and talks about Harry Potter (for example; fanfic writers and artists)?
Genuinely, I want to know other people’s stance on this. I already feel guilty for entertaining the idea of indulging with anything related to Harry Potter as a transman, but I want to know.

Hello! I noticed you recently used the radfem tag on a post. Being a HP author, are you aware of the message this sends considering the source content for this fandom?
I debated whether or not to answer this, as I am well aware of the hornet's nest I'm kicking—particularly on this site. However, I believe the contemporary rhetoric that assumes one's support of 'x' means they must believe 'y' to be reductive, dishonest, and particularly troubling when it comes to silencing the voices of women. It's the very same false equivalence that has led large swathes of the population into claiming that support of Palestine = antisemitism (including, ironically, JK Rowling).
I consider myself a radical feminist and I won't censor that simply because I also happen to like a magical school kid's book series written by a conservative moron. Does this mean I agree with everything every single radical feminist has ever said? No. But I believe that sex-based oppression is alive and well and can be seen most prominently in law-enforcement response to rape and domestic violence, abortion rights in many countries, access to maternity leave, research into women's health, household labour distribution and the commercial objectification of women (be that advertising or pornography).
Does this mean I think sex-based oppression is the only form of oppression? No. Does this mean I associate myself with TERFs? No. Was the radical feminist movement without flaws? Also no. Just as the socialist movement did not adequately address the disadvantages women faced in the 60s and 70s, the second-wave feminist movement failed to address the unique struggles of non-white women and queer women. There is always room to grow from the starting point of a movement created ~60 years ago. Intersectionality is critical. But we have not progressed as far as most would like to pretend (looking at you, America), and the way that women hasten to distance themselves from the 'harsh' type of feminism is partially at fault for this, in my opinion.
Without radical feminism, we would not have had the Women's Liberation Movement. Without radical feminism, we would not have abortion rights, access to credit, equal pay protections, etc. The demonisation of a branch of feminism that was so critical in fighting for the rights that modern women enjoy today is harmful and something I am very suspicious of. I mean, we're at a point where I can't even use the tag radfem without having people in my asks sending messages like this? Really? If there is something that I have reblogged or posted that you disagree with, then I am always open to a good-faith discussion, but I don't respect this style of internet discourse that strikes you down as guilty by association.
(Also, since I know that's what you're getting at — my opinion on TERFs is that they've done a great disservice to radical feminism and have gotten themselves worked up about something that is a non-issue outside of their corner of the internet. My question when people come to me IRL with anti-trans rhetoric is always, "have you ever actually met a trans person?" and the answer is always no...)
While I don't agree with everything said in it, this is an interesting article from Dr Charlotte Proudman which I recommend you read: Being a radical feminist means being a trans ally at the same time.

My Thoughts on the Issue
Not that anyone asked but whatever....
Hot Take #1
Is JKR problematic? Absolutely.
Can problematic media be consumed responsibly and with neutrality? Absolutely.
Consuming and even enjoying problematic media can help people develop informed opinions and even help people develop a moral compass. Especially, when this source material is a generation-spanning thing that has been a part of pop culture for decades.
Recognizing problematic themes within media doesn't always make that media problematic itself. For Example, in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, readers are exposed to problematic views that existed at the time of its publishing. Do we protest this media and demand that it be removed from circulation? Do we condemn anyone who consumes it? No, we instead use it as a tool to teach others about the existence of problematic media. About the existence of social issues. How to recognize and how to respond to these things.
This all leads me to....
Hot Take #2
Do I, personally in my view of things believe that Hogwarts Legacy's purpose is to be transphobic and antisemitic?
No. Absolutely not. In the face of JKR's views, the developers have made strides to try and combat against this. Did they resolve the issue entirely? No. But they tried. And that effort should be recognized.
Do I believe one can see these issues or relate these issues back to this piece of media?
Yes, but that can be done with ALL forms of media. Nothing is truly unproblematic. Social issues and social activism are fluid.
Is 'cancelling' a piece of media because it can be found problematic the correct approach?
Absolutely not. It will have the same effect as banning media always does, it'll will just make people want to consume it more.
Hot Take #3
When addressing problematic media, especially in this instance of Hogwarts Legacy, a lot of definitive statements are being made. The biggest being;
"If you buy this game you are transphobic and antisemitic."
The problem with definitive statements like these is that it excludes some of the members of these communities that you claim to defend. On top of that, it encourages others to engage in harassment.
Many people have said "If you buy this game you are no alley and you should just unfollow and block me." But what the posters of these statements fail to realize is that there are many people within the LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities (not allies but true members of the community) that do not share this same point of view.
Suddenly we see trans and Jewish peoples scared to enjoy a piece of media that means something to them personally for fear of being attacked and demonized by their own so-called allies.
No member of any community should have to prove themselves to be valid to an ally.
Hot Take #4
Allies who yell and scream overtop of the voices of the people within the community are not allies.
Allies who invalidate members of a community due to conflicting opinions are not allies.
Allies who claim to be allies but do not show up, be present, or engage when it truly matters are not allies.
True allies are there to support and lift up the community, not silence them or push them aside when differing opinions are presented.
Hot Take #5
Your unyielding aggression and verbal/written attacks on others is not helping the communities you claim to defend. It instead paints the already affected peoples in poor light and gives even more ammunition to those wishing to oppress/harm them.
People who do not already have well formed or educated opinions on these matters only see the explosive discourse, and this can sway them into the direction of those what wish to oppress/harm these communities.
Hot Take #6
This is something more specifically related to the Hogwarts Legacy that I haven't seen many people discussing.
On the specific subject of antisemitism. Yes, goblins (the mythical creatures) have been used as a way to stereotype and hurt those of the Jewish community. However, you also have to consider that the concept of goblins did not originate for this purpose and these are real aspects of someone's real culture. Just as the Swastika was once, and still is, a religious symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indian religion until it was appropriated by the Nazi party. So has the image of goblins and other mythical creatures been appropriated to represent the Jewish communities.
This takes me back to a previous Hot Take, I don't believe this game or this media is meant to perpetrate this stereotype. And many of the Jewish community are of the same opinion as well. But also there are some of a different opinion, this all goes back to how we consume and enjoy media.
Instead of becoming aggressive, instead of immediately condemning someone because they choose to consume this piece of media we should instead be using this as a segway into the discussion of how these things have been used to harm communities in the past and how we can stop perpetrating these stereotypes in the future.
Before this explosive discourse, there were many who truly never even knew these stereotypes of the Jewish peoples existed. But instead of becoming informed they were immediately condemned, and that is what is can become dangerous.
Now, my final words on the matter.
I've said my peace, and I know it won't change opinions. I don't expect it to. I know it won't magically fix the issues at hand. I don't expect it to. I know my opinions are mine and mine alone and that both members of the communities and allies will not agree with me. I don't expect them to.
Instead, I decided, as an ally, to post this for those within the LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities whose voices have been drowned out on the matter.
I've posted this for a transgender friend that has lost friends and support within his own community because he wants to enjoy something that has saved his life more than once and has been there through the good and the bad for him.
I've posted this for my Jewish friends and family members who were happy and excited for this game, but now instead they are facing backlash and are shocked and hurt at being compared to mythical creatures.
And I've posted this for everyone else who is scared to speak out and up for fear of retribution. Whether it's the religious extremists or the social activists leading it, a witch hunt is still a witch hunt.

what are your thoughts about prongsfoot? personally I think jily is OTP (SCREW JEGULUS/JEGULILY!!) what do u think
heyyyy!! jily is my number one james ship and it’s the only one i really ship. but tbh i dont dislike prongsfoot, i think its valid even if i dont ship it. my fav trope has always been childhood best friends to lovers so maybe that plays a part. also i can respect it because james and sirius have a very deep relationship in canon, and if characters are canonically close friends then theres very few things i can pick on in a ship of them. both james and lily are dead by the time the series takes place, but even after all those years its really evident how much sirius continues to love james and its really sweet. you can tell sirius really believed james saved him from a much darker and lonelier life, and i believe so too. then there are little sweet things like how they shared a mirror to talk to each other when they were serving different detentions, james wanting to make sirius the secret-keeper and only relenting to giving the title to peter when sirius told him to, all showing slight moments of how deep their bond was. the tragedy aspect of james’ death goes so hard too, not just the part where sirius gets locked up for his murder, but also the part where james only made peter the secret-keeper because of sirius’ plan (and also how sirius distrusted remus). so i think its cute and the shippers dont annoy me so… 🤝
