You don't know how it happened. You had the right of way. The light was green. Some drunk person had run their red light and t-boned you as you were crossing the intersection. They had hit you hard enough that your car flipped 4 times until it landed thankfully upright but in the other lane. Glass was everywhere. You're pretty sure you had a concussion from hitting your head on the steering wheel and the window. You for sure had broken bones. But then the pain came especially around your abdominal area. The other driver had died on impact. How did this happen you ask? Well, this is how.

You had just gotten back from visiting your friend, Hailey Upton, and her husband, Jay Halstead, you were ranting about Connor Rhodes, your now ex-boyfriend, and that you had caught another woman texting. You had dated for 3 years. He was also coming home later than normal. So once you stormed out you went straight to their house crying. It was a huge fight. Luckily for you, you had kept your apartment.

It was getting late and you just wanted to go home and eat a pint of ice cream and watch some cheesy sappy movie. You didn't have to work that night or the next day which was great. That also meant you didn't have to see Connor tonight or tomorrow, you were a nurse at Med. You loved him you really did but you couldn't stand a cheater and weren't going to tolerate it. As you were driving you came to a stop at a red light, while stopped you answered some texts and then put your phone down. As you started to drive you noticed headlights coming to you on your left and they were coming fast. The next thing you knew metal was hitting metal and then your car was flipping. Your head hit the steering wheel and then the window. The airbag deployed hitting you and breaking your nose and throwing your head into the headrest.

Your adrenaline was wearing off and then all the pain hit you and you moaned in pain. There was glass everywhere. You felt blood running down your face and into your eye. You felt the most pain in your abdominal area. You carefully looked down and saw glass puncturing you. You tentatively touched it but knew better than to yank it out. You couldn't hardly breathe. All of sudden you felt another impact and you were being pushed into a telephone pole wrapping your car on the passenger side. You blacked out.

You only came to when you heard your name being called by a voice but didn't open your eyes. It sounded underwater. You wanted to answer but couldn't you just wanted to sleep.

"Y/N it's Kelly. Can you hear me?" Kelly, your other best friend asked but you didn't respond. "Y/N I really need you to open your eyes." He said and you tried oh you tried. You slowly started to crack them open. "There we go." He said once he saw them open.

"Kelly?" You asked slurred.

"Yea it's me. You were in an accident. We're going to get you out and to Med. Ok?" He asked and you groaned and your eyes begin to shut again. "Hey hey no no keep those eyes open." He said but your eyes were already closed. "Y/N, hey. Open those eyes for me, please." You actually complied this time. "There we go. How are you and Connor?" He asked not knowing of the situation.

"'Roke up." You said slurring your words that shocked him.

"Why did you two break up?" Kelly asked as he shouted orders to his team.

"Cheated." You said slurring your words again and then your eyes rolled into the back of your head and your head lulled to the side and Kelly caught you. This freaked Jim out but he had to keep calm.

Everyone worked with ease and carefulness but quickly to get you out. They all saw the damage and knew you would be critical. When they got you out they put you on a backboard and a gurney and loaded you up and you were on your way to Med.

When you got to Med you were unconscious and couldn't hear anything. You were breathing but barely and it was labored. You went to your little paradise where Connor and you never broke up instead you got married and started a family one boy and one girl, it was perfect.

Connor was having a good night, well as good as one can have when one breaks up with another. He had been heartbroken when you pulled away from his kisses and started to pull away from him. The fight kept playing in his head. You had been the one to break up with him. You had seen a text from another girl on his phone but what you didn't know was that the other girl was a married woman jeweler who was setting his grandma's diamond in a set so he could propose to you. The reason why he was coming home early was because he was making details on how to propose and where making sure it was perfect.

Connor was in the ED when the ambulance came rolling in. He didn't look up considering it was a normal part of ED but when Maggie gasped he looked up and his face drained. "Maggie please tell me that is not Y/N." He said almost pleading.

"I'm sorry Connor. Take her to Trauma 2 and make it fast." She yelled and she turned to Connor.

"Let me go." Connor said and Maggie looked hesitant. "There are no other available doctors at the moment. Let me do it." He pleaded.

"Fine." She said and he rushed in and started giving orders.

Connor was supposed to be getting off shift when you rolled around but now he just couldn't make himself leave. Not with knowing you were in major surgery to fix your abdominal aorta that glass had found itself embedded in.

They wheeled you into surgery where he scrubbed in. "Ok guys, she is one of us. We have to save her but we handle it just like every other surgery." Connor said and they nodded. They got to work. Everything was going smoothly until one of the surgery techs noticed a drop in stats.

"Dr. Rhodes. Her O2 is dropping and he looked up.

"Ok start bagging her and get those stats back up." He said and they nodded. Once they got your stats back up. But then your heart rate started to drop. The machine alerted them. He looked up and then looked down. It started lowering when he took the glass out and he started to move faster.

"Heart rate is dropping." The tech said and before anyone could say anything you started to flatline "She's flatlining." The tech said.

"Start compressions. I'm holding this aorta off so she doesn't bleed out." Connor said and that's what they did. "Give me a clamp." He demanded and they did and clamped off the aorta and had his go at compressions he was about to have them shock you but then your heart rate came back up. "Ok let's finish this quickly and get her into recovery." He demanded again and they did just that. "Just hold on, baby. I'm gonna get you out of here." He quietly told you and everybody else pretended not to hear him. "When she gets out of recovery and into a room let me know." He said and they nodded.

4 hrs is how long it took to repair the aorta. He was an absolute wreck. But he had stayed calm while doing the surgery. He had gotten changed and then went to the doctor's lounge and waited when one of the surgery techs came in to let him know you were out of recovery in a room. He asked what number and when they told him he was up and going to you. When he got there he looked at you and regretted everything. He pulled the uncomfortable blue plastic chair by your bedside and sat down. He grabbed your hand and stroked your knuckles, and every now and then kissed them. He just had to wait for you to wake up.

A consistent beeping is what woke you up. You had slowly opened your eyes but quickly slammed them shut when they met with harsh light. You then felt a weight on your hand and looked over to find the black haired, blued eyed man that you once called your boyfriend. He was sleeping and looked so peaceful but you needed to wake him up. "'Onnor." You said sleepily and he stirred until he woke up and at first he looked confused but then saw you were awake.

"Baby." He sighed out in relief. Your scrunched your nose up.

"I'm not your baby anymore, Connor. We broke up." You said and rolled your eyes which hurt. He sighed he wasn't going to fight with you, especially since you just got out of surgery. "What's the damage?" You asked moving due to uncomfortableness. He sighed.

"You have 4 broken ribs, a concussion, your abdominal aorta was torn but I was able to fix it. You have a hairline fracture on your right ankle. A sprained left wrist. Multiple cuts from the glass and a lot of bruising." He listed what was wrong and you stayed silent.

"What about the other driver?" You asked

"He was drunk and died on impact." He told you and you nodded.

"What about my car?" You asked again, you loved your car.

"I'm sorry. It's totaled. You'll have to get a new one." He said and you nodded and let a tear slip. "Are you ok?" He asked truly worried.

"Yea. I'm just going to miss that car." You said and he chuckled and smiled both of which you loved.

"We'll get you a new and better car." He said.

Dr. Goodwin came into your room and you looked up and smiled "Hi, Nurse Y/L/N. How are you feeling?" She asked.

"Sore. Just found out my beloved car was totaled." You said and everyone chuckled and smiled.

"I'm sorry to hear that. I'm came here to let you know you're going to have the next few weeks off to recover with pay and Connor is going to be allowed a few days off." She said and you looked confused.

"Why is that?" You asked her.

"Since you have nobody here he decided to be the one to look after you." She said

"That's not necessary. I can look after myself." You tried to defend yourself.

"You had a major surgery and will need someone to look after you. Connor volunteered." She said and you may not have liked it but agreed.

You spent a week in the hospital making sure everything was then you were released in Connor's care.

When you got to his apartment that night after your release it was slow going but he was ok with that. He was and has always been so patient with you. You hated that you broke up with him but you couldn't stand a cheater. You both got into the apartment and he had to settle down on the couch while he pampered you and got the bed ready and made you something to eat. He truly was the sweetest man ever. "If you need me for anything during the night wake me up, and I mean anything." He said and you nodded.

"You got it." You said. The two of you stayed up and watched some TV and you ate what was allowed. When and if you wanted to get up he was there helping you. You knew now why you first fell in love with this man.

This went on for a few weeks and your old feelings started to come back and you started to fall in love with him again. When he went back to work was the hardest but you managed and if you need something he said to call him, Hailey, Jay, or Kelly. You didn't call anybody because you were perfectly fine. You and Connor had been texted throughout the day. Most of your wounds, sprain, and fracture had healed. You still had stitches but they were due to come out soon.

One thing was on your mind and you couldn't get it off of your mind. That was why did he cheat. When you didn't text him back one day it was when he was finishing his shift and it was worrying him but stayed calm. Once out of the hospital he got into his car and drove home. He found you sitting outside on the terrace. You didn't hear him come in so you jumped when you touched you. "I'm sorry, Baby. I didn't mean to startle you." He said and you hadn't been correcting him when he said it. "What's wrong? You didn't text me back." He said and you sighed as he bent down looking at you.

"Why did you cheat?" You said just coming out and saying it.

"Baby, I didn't cheat on you." He said and you glared at him.

"Don't lie to me." You said and he sighed and hung his head.

"I'm not. Just hold on. Don't move." He said and you did what you were told, to be honest you were still sore and you didn't feel like moving.

"Don't walk away from me. Who the fuck is Samantha?" You yelled out after him but he returned with a black velvet box.

"I didn't cheat on you. Samantha is a married woman-" He started but you cut him off and threw your hands up which pulled on your stitches but you didn't care.

"So you cheated on me with a married woman? Why were you coming home so late? I loved you and still do." You said you hadn't noticed the black velvet box.

"You didn't let me finish. Samantha is married woman jeweler that was helping me set my grandmother's diamond into a ring. I was coming home late because Hailey and Ava were helping me pick out a perfect spot to propose that night you stormed out. Also you still love me?" He asked and you nodded your head.

"Yes. I still love you." You said and he kissed you. You gladly kissed him back.

"I love you too. I was going to make this special but with how you look under these lights and the sunset now is as good time as any. So, here it goes. Y/N Y/M/N Y/L/N I have loved you since the beginning. I have loved you since I laid my eyes on you. It was love at first sight for me. I knew you were the one right then and there. You are so special to me and when we broke up it broke me and when I saw you come into ED I was petrified. I don't want to lose you again. I want to grow old with you and have a family with you. So, will you make my dreams come true and make me the happiest man on earth and marry me?" He finished and was already kneeling on one knee as he pulled out the ring, it was a cut cornered princess cut with one diamond on each side, it was perfect. The way it glimmered under the light made it all more beautiful. You were crying and then you nodded your head.

"Absolutely, I will marry you. It'll make me the happiest woman in the world." He smiled and put the ring on your finger and gently grabbed your face and crashed his lips into yours. Everything was perfect.

When you were allowed to back to work you went with Connor and you were holding hands, everyone took notice of that. You both got changed and started your shift. You were told if you needed a break than you take it. The stitches had been removed but you didn't have your normal energy back just yet.

As the two of you walked out he left you at the desk and kissed you. "I'll see you later, fiancé." He said with a smile.

"Yes you will my soon to be husband." You smiled and he left. Everyone came up to you.

"So I take it you're back together." April said and you nodded and showed them the ring.

"More than back together. Engaged." You said and everyone squealed in excitement, the same way Hailey had done when you told her. They asked for details and you gave them. As they were talking to you, you saw Connor walk by with Will and Ethan and he smiled at you and winked which you returned.

Yea, everything was going to be ok. You had the man of your dreams and were about to start a life with him. It was perfect. You were finally in paradise.

It was no secret to anyone in the firehouse that you and the lieutenant were both in love with each other.

Everyone could see it. Well except for you and Kelly.

Since neither of you had made a move to ask the other one out. Your coworkers even started bets on how long it might take for you two to finally start dating. I mean it was so obvious with how your face lit up every single time he walked into a room, and how Kelly would sometimes stare at you with a big grin on his face. Even Boden saw it.

You were a paramedic with ambo 61 and you sometimes got called into horrific places and situations but it never was this bad.

Severide was also the first to notice that something was wrong with you. You looked scared and tired ever since you went on that date that Gabby set up for you and one of her friends at Molly’s. Which you only agreed to go on since you wanted to get over Kelly. You felt like he didn’t like you the same way you liked him.

Kelly tried talking to you, but you would just say that you’re fine and just tired from work. He didn’t believe a single word you said, he knew something was wrong. But he didn’t know what was wrong. Which made him so mad, since he wanted the best for you and he wanted to make sure that you were alright.

But that was about to change drastically.

You were his best friend and Kelly had no idea what he would do without you. Until it all came crashing down. You didn’t show up for your shift and you didn’t answer your phone at all.

That made the alarm bells in Kelly’s head ring so hard. Something was wrong, you would never be late to shift and you nearly always called back or answered the phone as soon as possible.

And he was sadly right. Something was terribly wrong, after talking to the Chief. Kelly ran to his car to drive to your apartment to check on you.

What he saw terrified him.

There were police tapes all over your front door. The Lieutenant’s face dropped, quickly walking up to Jay he started asking a million questions at once. Like “Where is Y/n?” “Why are there tapes all over her front door?”

Jay looked at him surprised. “Oh you didn’t hear about it? Someone took Y/n. I thought you guys heard it already.” Kelly could feel the blood drain from his face. He looked pale like a ghost.

No, no, no this can’t be happening. Was the only thought going through his head. Kelly felt how his hands were shaking when he pulled out his phone to quickly call the chief and tell him what had happened.

Driving back to the firehouse after Jay told him they would all do their best to make sure you returned home safe, Kelly simply felt numb, he felt guilty for not checking up on you earlier or doing something to help earlier.

Everyone at the firehouse was in shock, the firehouse felt so empty without you. It just wasn’t the same without you.

Later they got a call about a small fire in some old abandoned house and after gearing up and getting into the trucks,they all rode in silence. You were one of the best paramedics ambo 61 ever had. And they knew that you would fight your way out no matter what and that you would return home.

The call went okayish, since they managed to put out the fire pretty fast and after finding no one inside they decided to gather up everything and return to the firehouse. CPD suspected someone did this on purpose. Kelly was talking to Jay asking him if there were any updates on your case and sadly he had no new updates.

“Kelly.” One of the firefighters yelled, looking over at the house. The front door opened and with a big cloud of smoke, Herrman appeared with someone in his arms.

It was you.

Kelly never ran as fast as he did in that moment, he needed to get to you to make sure you were alright. You were alive but unconscious. He rode the whole way over to med holding your hand with Gabby in the back and the paramedic who stepped in on your place at the front.

After Maggie directed him and the rest of the firefighters from 51 to the waiting room somewhere upstairs, Kelly sat down and he finally felt like he could breathe again. They took you in to check if you hadn’t broken any bones or something, Severide wasn’t really listening to what the doctor was saying, since he was too focused on the fact that they had found you.

Kelly felt relieved that they found you, but the one thing that was bugging him was ‘why were you there? what happened?’

Later on after your check up was done and you were still resting and asleep, the doctor finally them to visit you two at a time.

Looking over at everyone, chief Boden got up and gestured for Severide to follow him. Quickly getting up Kelly followed him to your room.

He could feel the tears coming when he saw how pale and fragile you looked in that hospital bed. Walking up to you, Kelly gently took your hand and sat by your bedside. After a while chief Boden left, while squeezing his shoulder and whispering that they would all be in the waiting room area.

Kelly just sat there holding your hand for what felt like ages but it was only an hour. Soon he felt your hand begin to move and your eyes slowly opened. “Where am I?” You asked softly looking around and finally looking over to Kelly. “You’re at the hospital sweetheart. Do you remember what happened?” He asked softly while putting a cup with water up to your lips. “Not really, I remember that there was some guy in my apartment saying something to me and then it all went black.” You mumbled. “You scared me, you know? I thought I lost you Y/n/n.” Kelly said looking at you with eyes full of tears.

Gently moving on your bed you patted the spot next to you, gesturing for Kelly to sit down next to you. When he sat down, you immediately pulled him into a hug softly rubbing his back while he cried. “I thought I lost you. What were you thinking Y/n/n? Could have died.” Severide said sadly. “I’m sorry. I should have said something sooner about the guy. He started following me after that stupid date. I didn’t even want to go but I just wanted to get over you since you don’t feel the same.” You mumbled, hoping Kelly wouldn’t hear the last sentence. But it was too late since he had heard you already.

Pulling away he looked at you gently wiping the tears from your cheeks, you didn’t even notice that you were crying since you were simply embarrassed that he heard what you said. “Why do you think that I don’t feel the same?” He asked.

“I just thought since you didn’t make a move or ask me out then I just took it as a sign that you didn’t like me like that.” You replied playing with the blanket that was put over you to keep you warm.

“Y/n/n, ever since I saw you I’ve been in love with you. I was just too scared to make a move, sweetheart. It’s not that I don’t like you or anything. I just didn't want to lose you.” He said gently pulling you in for a hug.

You pulled Kelly in even closer. “I’m sorry.” You said softly into his neck. “I’m sorry too honey. I should have noticed and said something earlier instead of just not doing anything. I was so terrified I’d lose another person I loved. I love you Y/n. And I’m so glad you’re alright.” Kelly pulled you even closer into his arms and started rubbing your back. “I love you too and I’m sorry for scaring you.” You said looking at him with tears in your eyes.

The rest of your stay at the hospital, Kelly or someone else from firehouse 51 would come and visit you and bring you food and just joke around with you.

Luckily they did catch the guy who took you and since it wasn’t his first time breaking the law he went to jail for some time for breaking the law and doing some other bad things.

“Baby, where do you want these bags of icing.”

Turning from the oven with a pan of fresh gingerbread cookies you point to the farthest corner of the counter.

“Over there please Ty, I want to be sure we have plenty of room to do this and hopefully we can avoid a big mess.”

Placing the icing bags on the counter he stood back watching his girlfriend lay them all out and then got bowls of small candies out.

“What are those for?”

“The cookies and if we manage to get around to decorating that house, now let me just put in this next batch of cookies. Then we can get started would you please put on some Christmas music? I have the playlist already set up on my phone.”

“Sure can.”

Using her spatula Rose carefully places each gingerbread person on the tray popping them in the oven and setting the timer. Wiping off her hands she grabs the pan with cookies already cooled, carrying them over to the counter where Tyler had gotten the music to play.

“Okay babe here we go decorate it however you want but please do try and not get icing all over I don’t want to run out.”

Tyler chuckled thinking about the last time they tried this and how more icing ended up on the two of them then on the cookies.

“Don’t worry I’ll behave.”

Pressing a kiss to her temple Tyler grabbed a cookie and picked a color to outline with. Rose watched him decorate, this was a moment she’d remember for the rest of her days. Picking up an icing bag she grabbed a cookie of her own to start decorating. The two silently worked for a few minutes listening to the music playing in the background as they enjoyed each other's company.

“You know something, this time of year always remind me of how our relationship started.”

Rose spoke softly as the memories from a few year prior played through her head causing her to smile.

“You mean that time I got caught under the mistletoe with your fine ass?”

He smirked leaning forward to steal a peck from her lips.

“I can’t believe I got Tyler.”

“What’s wrong with having Tyler I imagine he’d be pretty simple to shop for.”

“That’s easy for you to say Orange you’re actually friends with him, he hates me.”

“He does not hate you.”

“Oh yes he does he’s always glaring in my direction and when I tried to be polite or say hi, he just walks away.”

“To be fair he does that with everyone he’s just not a super expressive guy when it comes to being at work. But trust me he’ll love whatever you get him even if he doesn’t say it out loud.”

James assured her as the two walked down the hallway, it was a week before their company gift exchange and Rose was still unsure of what to get Tyler. He was serious when he said that Tyler would love anything she bought given the fact he was absolutely smitten with her. Not that Rose would know that given Tyler’s silent nature at work and don’t mess with me attitude. But the whole locker room and even some of the women knew about his feelings for her.

“What am I going to do?”

“Why don’t you go ask his dad? It wouldn’t hurt to give that a try maybe he can help you think of something. It’s better than stressing yourself out more than you already are.”

“I hadn’t even thought of asking Taz, you’re brilliant I’ll text you later.”

Rose smiled before scurrying off hoping to find the man in question to ask for help with his son’s gift.

‘Please don’t let Tyler be around.’

She silently begged walking into the ring area where a few of the guys were doing some practice moves. Spotting Taz speaking with Jack she made her way over and gently tapped on his shoulder.

“Rose, nice to see you.”

“Hi um could I please speak with you in private about something?”

Relief flooded her when he nodded, excusing himself from the conversation with Jack, the two walked a little bit away from the ring.

“Sorry to disturb you but I need some help, I got Tyler’s name for the gift exchange, and I still haven’t been able to find anything for him. Could you maybe give me a couple ideas? I just want it to be something he’ll like and find useful or something.”

“Ah I was wondering who got him well I guess it depends, what’s the budget limit?”

“Actually, I don’t know I didn’t realize there was one.”

“Okay, something simple yet useful. How about a gift card somewhere? There’s this steak place he absolutely loves going to whenever we’re around. You can’t really go wrong with giving the kid food.”

“That’s a great idea um what’s the name of the restaurant?”

“STK it’s a steakhouse I’ll give you the directions just give me a moment.”

Rose smiled, nodding as she waited patiently for him to look up the directions and texted them to her phone.

“There just text me if you have any other questions and I’d be more than happy to help you out.”

“Thank you so much Taz I appreciate this.”

“Anytime kiddo.”

Leaving the ring area Rose went out to her car and after putting the address in her phone made her way to the restaurant. After getting the gift card she picked up one other thing then placed them in a gift bag. When the party night finally arrived, she nervously carried the bag inside looking around, spotting Renee she rushed over to her.

“Hey Ree where do we put the gift exchange bags?”

“Hi sweetie they changed it up this year, you’re just going to give the gift to whoever you have.”

“Oh gods.”

“Who do you have?”

“Hook.”

“He just got here about ten minutes ago he’s there by the snack table probably trying to find a bag of chips to eat. I’ll just text Jon that way he can tell Tyler to come over this way, so you don’t need to push through the crowd.”

Renee hooked her arm with Rose’s and led her away from the crowd off to the side where they wouldn’t be bumped into.

“Alright Jon is bringing him over don’t worry this is going to be great he’ll absolutely love whatever you decided to get him.”

Renee winked quickly walking away as Jon shoved Tyler over to her Rose covered her mouth to stifle a laugh at Tyler’s curse but cleared her throat when he looked at her. Holding the bag out she looked at the floor then up at him.

“I know we hardly ever talk but um I got your name in the gift exchange, so I got you this family size bag of chips and a gift card to a steak place your dad said you liked.”

She rambled letting him take the bag from her hand and opened it a slight smile crossing his face as he looked at the gifts.

“Thank you Rose.”

“How.. I didn’t know you knew my name.”

“Of course, I know you’re name why wouldn’t I?”

“Because we never talk, and I figured that you hated me given the fact you glare at me a whole lot.”

“Not glaring at you just the way I look is all.”

“Hey! You two instead of babbling to each other why don’t you look above your heads.”

Jon called out causing them both to look up seeing a spring of mistletoe hanging from the ceiling. Rose felt her heart pick up in speed as Tyler’s eyes seemed to darken when he looked back at her, a smirk crossing his face. Rasing a brow he stepped closer waiting for her to reject him.

“Is it okay?”

“Yes it is.”

Rose said a little too fast causing Tyler to laugh quietly before his lips pressed against her’s and she melted into the kiss.

“I still can’t believe you thought I hated you.”

“Well, you acted like you did you weren’t really throwing out smiles or talking to me apart from the occasional grunt here or there.”

“It was all just a show baby I didn’t know how to admit to the most beautiful girl that I had the hots for her.”

Tyler said as he washed his hands then dried them before he hugged Rose from behind kissing her cheek.

“It would have saved me a lotta stressing out if you had.”

“True but that doesn’t matter now because you’re mine and I don’t plan on letting this sweet ass go.”

He said, grabbing her hips and pulling her into him the two laughing as she turned around wrapping her arms around his neck.

“We need to finish these cookies and I just put a fresh batch in.”

“We have a couple minutes besides I don’t need that long.”

“You’re awfully cocky you know that?”

“It’s my speciality.”

Tyler smirked cupping her cheeks as he captured her lips in a kiss much similar to their first.
