Pairing: Kentaro Kyotani x gn! reader

Word Count: a little over 2k

My submission for @mrskenmakozume Simp Me Not collab where we step out of our comfort zone and pick a character we don’t write for normally

Outside, the frigid winds whipped against the side of the cabin. The wood creaked from its might as the gale echoed through the empty halls. A snowstorm had rolled overhead in the middle of the afternoon sending many of the townsfolk to seek shelter within their homes. You were thankful that one of the elders had stopped by earlier to give you more learning material to help you acclimate to your new surroundings. With not being born into the life of being a Viking like those within the town, you don’t understand their language. Not only does this cause a bit of a hindrance with trying to fit in, but also when trying to communicate with King Kentaro… whom you live with.

The weather outside was similar to the day you were taken away from your home. As a way to bring peace between your people and the Vikings, your father chose to use you as the bargaining chip. Willing to give you away to the King of the Vikings. However, your father went back on his word and betrayed the Vikings and within two nights during a horrendous snow squall, your town was raided by the Vikings and you were taken as their prize. You were surprised that the King kept you alive for you were certain that he would assume you would betray him just as your father had. Ever since you stepped foot into the Viking town, the stares you received were uncomfortable and not knowing how to communicate with anyone made you feel alone and scared. That brings about how you remain here, studying the culture and language of the people with whom you’ve come to live with, in hopes that you can gain their trust.

A strong gust of the icy air flooded the room causing you to shiver and curl into the heavy wool cape that Kentaro lets you use when he is away for long periods of time. You’ve grown fond of him as time has passed. He tries his best to show you that he cares, even if vocally the two of you can’t understand each other very well. There are many times after coming back from raids that Kentaro comes home to you bearing gifts. Whether it be jewelry or fine cloth, he brings it to you with a bright gleam in his eyes shining bright, contrasting against his stoic-looking face. Which you’ve come to learn isn’t actually as scary as you once thought. He just doesn’t express his emotions as much as others, but there’s sometimes a hint of a smirk or smile tugging at the corners of his lips during the times he returns to you.

From where you sit near the roaring fire, you look towards the window to find the light of the day was fading. Kentaro and the others who left for the raid the other day were supposed to arrive any day now. You prayed to the gods that they were safe and keeping warm during this storm if they happened to get caught in it. Focusing back on the manuscripts that lay in front of you, you stayed up a while longer in hopes that maybe the storm will die down and the raiding party would arrive. Although when the winds began to cease and the snow that fell became peaceful, the party didn’t return. With a yawn you arranged your papers into neat piles for the following day before making your way to the bed, feeling a bit somber that you’d be sleeping alone again. Getting under the covers you threw Kentaro’s cape over you for extra warmth and to feel as though he was with you while you prayed for his and the other’s safe return.

When morning comes you’re woken by the birds chirping and the bright sunlight shining in through the window. You let out a tired groan as you stretch your limbs, slowly getting out of bed to get yourself ready. Normally you’d be prepared for when the raiding party was to arrive to greet Kentaro home and since the raiding party is expected to return any time now you needed to get dressed to leave the warm solace of your home. Once ready you headed for the door, grabbing Kentaro’s heavy cape to drape over your shoulders before stepping out into the chilly morning air. You were careful as you walked down the hill your home sat upon, not wanting to make a fool of yourself by slipping in the snow and tumbling the rest of the way into the center of the town. Stepping foot on the level ground within the center of town you noticed a few people out doing their usual routines. When they would look at you, if they wanted to acknowledge your presence, you would wave to them… although you never seem to get any response back. If it were one of the children within the town they would give you a toothy grin, but it would be wiped away from their parents who usher them away as they give you the stink eye. You’re not too sure why the people of the town don’t seem to like you. If it was due to your father’s betrayal you could understand their reasons. Not wanting to get close to someone who might just go and betray the clan. It’s why you never understood why Kentaro kept you around.

Through your muddled thoughts, you made your way to the docks. Heading towards the stack of wooden boxes off to the side, brushing off as much snow as you could before taking a seat to wait for the boat to arrive. Sitting alone allowed for your thoughts to wander once more, completely zoning out and unaware of your surroundings. That was until a large furry head rested itself on your knee, shocking you back to your senses. In front of you was Khan, one of the wolves trained by the clan to fight alongside them in any of their battles. He was owned by one of the better fighters within the clan, Hajime, who Kentaro entrusted to watch over the town and you while he and the others were away. As you began to scratch behind Khan’s ears, you looked around in search of Hajime finding him a little away talking with a farmer of the town. You were thankful for at least one person and his wolf for trusting you other than Kentaro, but it wasn’t really enough to relax you. As you look out over the waterway, you thought about how you sometimes were thankful you couldn’t understand their language quite yet as you wouldn’t be able to understand any rumors that the townspeople may have created of you. Ignorance is bliss, right?

A distant howl was heard through the gentle breeze. Khan’s ears perked up as he turned his head toward the water before answering with his own tune. Off in the distance, you could see the hazy silhouette of a boat and its sail. The howl of multiple wolves echoed in the distance to which Khan eagerly returned as he made his way down the dock. The sound of snow crunching behind you alerted you of someone’s approach. Looking back, Hajime had now joined you, giving you a small nod in greeting to which you returned with your own. He then went down and joined Khan to greet the others and help them secure the boat. You watched as Juno, Kentaro’s wolf, jumped out and greeted Khan before dashing over to you. Hopping off the box you were perched upon, you happily greeted the creature. Heavy footfalls made their way toward you, earning both your and Juno’s attention. Seeing Kentaro in front of you made you quickly stand, brushing the snow off your clothes before greeting him.

“Welcome home,” you say in his language, nervous as you wanted it to sound correct.

Kentaro’s eyes widened in pleasant surprise, warming you with relief. Even if you may not have pronunciations down, the effort was still enough to cause pride to swell within him. You could see the hint of a smile tugging at his lips as he brought a hand to the small of your back to guide you along with him. Once in motion, Juno stood up and began trotting ahead of the two of you. A voice yelled from behind the two of you. Turning around, some of the men yelled something to Kentaro which earned a sigh from him.

“Head on up,” he said, “I’ll be right there.”

Catching several of the words, you nodded in understanding before turning towards Juno to walk with the wolf back to the cabin. Lifting your eyes from the snowy ground, your gaze caught those of two townspeople. Narrowing their eyes as you looked at them, their mouths moving as they spoke to one another as they eyed you up and down. While you broke eye contact to continue on your way, Juno sensed your distress and saw where you were looking. Hearing a low growl emit from the white wolf caused you to stop in your tracks.

"Juno! Come!" You demanded, speaking in the language she would understand and catching the attention of others in the vicinity.

Juno stopped growling, her eyes boring into the two people before trotting after you. As you arrived back at your home, you began to prepare the fire. Juno follows on your heel around the cabin making you stumble every so often. With a sigh, you head to the kitchen area and grab a small piece of meat. Giving it to her she happily accepted it and trotted over to her corner of the house, allowing you to continue with the fire so you could start preparing food. The sound of the door flying open startled you, followed shortly after by a thud which you learned, after going to investigate, was a crate that Kentaro had carried into the cabin. Going back to working on the meal, you were spooked again when an arm wrapped around you from behind.

"What happened?" Kentaro asked in a low voice.

You looked up to him, feigning confusion, even though you understood what he asked.

"What do you-"

"What made Juno angry?" He asked, cutting your question off.

Knitting your brows together, you looked back at the food.

"Nothing," you sighed, "Don't worry."

A hand gently took your chin and turned your face to look at him.

"Tell me," he instructed, but his voice was soft and kind.

You closed your eyes with a sigh.

"It's- I-," you bite the inside of your cheek as your voice gets caught in your throat.

Your thoughts are running wild, unsure of how to explain what you're feeling, and not knowing the correct translations of some words wasn't helping your racing mind. Tears began to slip down your cheeks which were quickly wiped away by Kentaro.

"I don't feel welcomed here," you manage to say quietly.

Your words clicked in Kentaro’s mind, allowing him to connect the dots. He’s seen the looks you receive from those in town and he hoped that the longer you were here and your determination of learning their language and culture would prove to the townspeople that you were to be trusted. Even though you’ve been here for months, the betrayal of your father was something that the others had a hard time forgiving even though you weren’t him. Kentaro led you to the table, sitting down in the chair before pulling you into his lap. His hand ran up and down your back as you cried into his neck.

“Why do you keep me here?” You ask.

A second went by before you felt him tense up, his grip on your waist tightening slightly. He shifted a bit in the chair allowing him to get to a pouch on his hip, pulling a necklace out of it. You let him drape it over your neck before looking down at it, turning the pendant in your fingers as you inspect it. It was a wolf face carved into a piece of wood, a wolf obviously being a symbol of the clan. You noticed symbols etched into the side, but you weren’t sure what they meant. Kentaro knew you wouldn’t, however, he knew in time that you’d understand them in the future.

“You belong here,” he answered, lifting your chin for you to look at him, “with me.”

okay so

I have just watched new haikyuu episode, but cuz the schoolsa re closed right now I can’t go to my volleyball training and I won’t be able to in a long time and because of the weather I can’t go out and play alone or with my friends either so I’m stuck inside my home making hedcanons.

And my beautifully cursed brain came up with a VINLAND SAGA AS HAIKYUU AU. YES I JUST DID THAT. GOT A PROBLEM?!

So to the headcanon: I came up with a little story for Thorfinn

Thorfinn in primary school played volleyball sometimes with his father who used to be a coach but had to retire cuz of an accident.

Later in middle school Thorfinn joined the volleyball team (now I’m not sure if we are leaving Thors alive at this point or if he died in a car accident caused by Floki. I think the second option BUT we are not killing anyone else)

In his middle school the teams’ coach was Askeladd (as he introduced himself, nobody knew his real name). He was a piece of shit and mostlythere for money , but still a good coach. Him and Thorfinn developed a father-son like relationship but with a looooot of mocking. Bjorn was there as Askeladds assistant. He wasn't really working in the school, he was just there cuz his boyfriend was a coach and he wanted to see him at work.

The one problem was...this team was made out of ppl that had to repeat classes. Reeeeaal troublemakers. Some of them had broken noses and some had already started growing beards. They looked fucking horrible. And in the middle of this was our boi Thorfinn who kinda got along with them as an angsty depressed teen.

Throughout whole middle school Thorfinn played as the wing spiker with this buff dude. And Thorfinn, for a really small guy, not only jumped incredilbly high but also had enough strength to break through anybodys’ block AND break others fingers while doing it.

After a few matches with them people started calling them the barbarian/viking team. They were lound, they looked scary and were hella strong.

In his third grade Thorfinn had a year long break from volleyball as his whole team (finally) graduated. Askeladd stayed with Thorfinn for a little longer still welcoming him on volleyball practice, even if it was only him but eventually he had to retire just as his father (the principal couldn’t stand him so he fired him). Also Canute is principals’ son in this scenario.

Through this year Thorfinn calmed down his angst a little and became a little happier and nicer.

Then in high school he picked up volleyball again, making his new best friend Einar joining him.

They became an awesome team, with uncle Leif as a coach (he was bored and refused to retire, even if ppl told him to) and Thorfinn realized that he was way more comfortable playing as a libero than as a spiker. He also did not want to break any more fingers.

Sometimes Gudrid joined them on their practice, as there was no women team in this school. Leif at first forbid it cuz ,,they’ll get used to playing with you here, and won’t be able to play as good on the official matches’’ but he had to give up because Thorfinn and Einar always tried to sneak her in.

ARE WE MAKING ARNEIS THEIR MANAGER? YES WE ARE!!!!

Canute went to a different high-school than Thorfinn but comes to watch them play sometimes. He himself does not play volleyball.

And I don’t really know where to put Round Eyes. I love him but also have no idea what to do with him yet. I’m open for suggestions.

Yamaguchi Tadashi hasknown ever since he was a small child that one day he was going to work withTsukishima Kei’s dragon. It has been his secret dream and goal ever since hemet the other boy.

Even if Tsukishima didn’tcome from a long, prestigious line of dragon riders, Yamaguchi knows that hewould still find the other boy to be the most impressive, awe-inspiring,generally smartest most amazing person in the world. Ever since Tsukishimasneered “pathetic” at the sight of Yamaguchi’s bullies (and Yamaguchi, on theground), Yamaguchi thought Tsukishima was probably the coolest personimaginable.

But the Tsukishima familyline was, in fact, one of the oldest lines for dragon riders, and Yamaguchioften couldn’t even believe that someone like him was allowed to befriends with someone as awesome as Tsukishima. And then of course therewas Kiba, Tsukishima’s dragon, who was the most wonderful creature in theentire universe (which Yamaguchi made sure to tell Kiba, at least twice a day)and overall, Yamaguchi thinks that any future where he can be one of Kiba’sgroomsmen is the only thing he wants out of life because it’s already far toogrand and too bold to even imagine he could be someone who works arounddragons.

The idea of having hisown dragon honestly never occurred to him.

“What do we do?”Yamaguchi hisses at the sight of the hatching egg.

It is impossible to tellwhat Tsukishima is thinking (he looks annoyed, which is something that wouldordinarily distress Yamaguchi except there is a hatching dragon egg andhe doesn’t know what is supposed to happen). “You’ll have to bond with thedragon,” Tsukishima explains.

“What?! I can’t dothat! I’m not a dragon-rider!”

“You’re the only onearound, Yamaguchi.”

“But Tadashi is mygroomsmen!” Kiba says indignantly. Looming over both of them and then staringat the egg. “He is already mine! The egg can have, oh, that guy,” Kiba craneshis head and looks at someone walking past, oblivious to the two studentshuddled over the egg.

“Kiba,”Tsukishima chides his dragon, who promptly snorts out smoke.

Kiba was the one whorescued the egg from the smugglers, being the first one to sense a dragon eggnearby. And he had been very protective of the egg up till now. The plan had beento bring the dragon to the nearest breeding center so that it could hatch insafety in the presence of someone who was properly trained to bond with a dragon.

Only then it startedhatching.

“But we could stillmake it!” Yamaguchi says, a tad desperately. “If Kiba flies—”

“Shut up, Yamaguchi,”Tsukishima says. “You know that would only endanger the egg. And if it doesn’tbond right away, we’ll lose the dragon.”

Yamaguchi still thinksthere are other options, but it’s far too late, the dragon pokes its head outof the shell and then immediately wiggles, bursting through the rest of it. Itis a small, pale green dragon and it’s absolutely beautiful, like alittle star, and Yamaguchi falls in love a little. He sucks in his breath,because dragons don’t always imprint the way you want them too, sometimes theycan be very contrary and usually they have a whole range of people to choosefrom (trained people, people of good breeding who have prepared for this alltheir lives) and if this dragon doesn’t like him, then it might die, andYamaguchi’s heart would break—

“Mine?” says thelittle demon, climbing on his pants leg.

“Hello, there,”Yamaguchi says softly. “I’m Yamaguchi Tadashi. Would you like a name?”

“Tadashi,” she says. “Yes, alright, that would be nice.”

And Yamaguchi hasn’tprepared a name, so he just says the first thing that comes to mind, which is,“Hoshi.”

And the little dragonthinks it over and says, “Yes, alright. I like that. I’m Hoshi. Thank you, Tadashi.” And she motions tobe picked up, so Yamaguchi does.

“But—I’m supposed togo to Karasuno with you to learn how to be your groomsmen,” Yamaguchi says,looking desperately at Tsukishima and realizing that his planned future hasabruptly disappeared.

“You’re still going toKarasuno with me,” Tsukishima says softly. “Only this time you’ll be a rider.”

Yamaguchi looks at thedragon in his arms that is already falling asleep and says, “Oh.”

A/N: Thank you for thesuggestion, anon-friend! But since you were not specific on what kind ofTsukkiYama prompt, I decided to combine it with this other anon-friend prompt I’ve had fora very long time back when I was first seeking out possible Haikyuu AU ideas. Itis not quite what was suggested, and now I have developed another AU I wouldn’tmind making longer at some point, but it was heavily inspired by the Temeraireseries (scene straight from the books, to be honest) as well as some How toTrain Your Dragon (only set in more modern times, because I’m too lazy to writehistorically accurate Napoleonic War AU.
