After six months of brutal fighting and the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis, multiple Israeli and western commentators have argued that Hamas is winning the war and making military history in the process.
[…]
Hamas had survived "the IDF onslaught for longer than any war Israel has ever fought," and in "doing so, they have thoroughly dented Israel's much vaunted deterrent status. In brief, and with daunting potential long-term consequences for Israel, the IDF no longer looks invincible."
Hamas has blocked a potential normalization deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel, which looked inevitable before the war began on 7 October, and put the Palestinian issue "back squarely on the international map" after years of the Palestinian Authority (PA) failing to do so.
A final victory for Hamas, Phillip notes, is the “head-spinning speed of Israel's post-October 7 delegitimization in the eyes of many in the world.”
[…]
Following the withdrawal of the 98th Division from the southern Gaza city, Harel noted that the Israeli army's “two goals were the capture of top Hamas officials in Gaza and the rescue of the Israeli captives currently held by the Palestinian Resistance in Gaza.”
"The public should be told the truth: The enormous death and destruction the IDF is leaving behind in Gaza, alongside quite a few losses on our side, aren't currently bringing us any closer to achieving the war's goals," he concluded.
[…]
"Israel's failure is not based on presenting the goals of the war – which were fully supported by all Western countries. The failure lies entirely in the execution," Eyal wrote, adding that "war is not won just by killing. A complementary political act is needed."
The first failure, according to the report, was "the civilian suffering in Gaza."
"Those who want to overthrow the rule of Hamas in Gaza do not conduct a Roman-style revenge campaign, carry out a protective wall or retaliatory action as if it were the 1950s."
[…]
Eyal also noted that Israel had become isolated in the international community and that even its allies in Washington and Brussels were beginning to turn against it.
"Not only has [Israel] lost support in most of the West, and is very close to an arms embargo from Europe, even among its great ally, the tectonic plates are in motion."

Hey i don't wanna put you on the spot, but I'm trying to help someone understand that China and other socialist nations aren't evil, i was hoping you could give me some resources, i know you've posted a lot about this stuff but Tumblr search sucks
Anything you could point me to, thats in English and is pro-Chinese?
Especially stuff about the uyghurs and tiananmen square incident, it would be a massive boon.
I truly think this person is not beyond saving, they seem very receptive.
No worries! I've written about both the DOTP in China, as well as both my perspective on the Tiananmen color revolution and the Uyghur "genocide" hoax. I've linked them here.
The PRC: A DOTP
Uyghur language supression?
Uyghur Genocide Hoax 1
Uyghur Genocide Hoax 2
Uyghur Genocide Hoax 3
Why I Hate the Tiananmen "Protestors" (the article I linked at the bottom is a great resource, though I have others if you need! Just send an ask!)
I have some bonuses here too!
Bonus: The GPCR - A Peasant's perspective
Bonus: The Great Leap Forward
Good luck and remember: know when to quit and know your audience. If you need more or different sources, I have mountains worth. Let me know via asks. Oh, and don't forget to agitate about western media and propaganda!

a post in honor of lord byron's 200th death anniversary —
the greeks were very fond of byron, who when he died in 1824 was a military commander and notable influence in their war of independence. as one of the most (if not the most) famous members of the philhellenist movement, byron used his poetic platform to try to remind people of greece's reputation as the source of western traditions in art and culture. the greeks then honored byron by decorating his coffin with a laurel wreath (below). they also erected statues for him, like this one below in athens depicting him being crowned with a laurel wreath (a symbol of greatness, especially in poetry/music [which historically overlapped]) by a female personification of greece. to this day, some statues of byron are annually wreathed in tradition, and the names byron/vyron/vyronas are still used in greece for roads, towns, and people in his honor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"’Tis sweet to win, no matter how, one’s laurels,
By blood or ink; ’tis sweet to put an end
To strife; ’tis sometimes sweet to have our quarrels,
Particularly with a tiresome friend:
Sweet is old wine in bottles, ale in barrels;
Dear is the helpless creature we defend
Against the world; and dear the schoolboy spot
We ne’er forget, though there we are forgot.
But sweeter still than this, than these, than all,
Is first and passionate love — it stands alone,
Like Adam’s recollection of his fall;
The tree of knowledge has been pluck’d — all ’s known —
And life yields nothing further to recall
Worthy of this ambrosial sin, so shown,
No doubt in fable, as the unforgiven
Fire which Prometheus filch’d for us from heaven."
— excerpt from Lord Byron's Don Juan, Canto the First (writ 1818, pub. 1819).
"The mountains look on Marathon –
And Marathon looks on the sea;
And musing there an hour alone,
I dreamed that Greece might still be free;
For standing on the Persians' grave,
I could not deem myself a slave."
— excerpt from Lord Byron's Don Juan, Canto the Third (writ 1819, pub 1821) — this stanza is part of a section often published on its own under the title "The Isles of Greece."
"Byron was at once a romantic dreamer, who wanted life to square up to his illusions, and a satirical realist, who saw what was before him with unusual clarity and found its contradictoriness amusing. The clash between the two Byrons is nowhere more noticeable than in his last writings, done on Cephalonia and at Missolonghi during the months before his death. There we see the Greece he dreams of, and the Greece which, in different ways, destroys him."
— excerpt from Peter Cochran's "Byron's Writings in Greece, 1823-4."
"Oh, talk not to me of a name great in story;
The days of our youth are the days of our glory;
And the myrtle and ivy of sweet two and twenty
Are worth all your laurels, though ever so plenty.
What are garlands and crowns to the brow that is wrinkled?
'Tis but as a dead-flower with May-dew besprinkled.
Then away with all such from the head that is hoary!
What care I for the wreaths that can only give glory!
Oh FAME! - if I e'er took delight in thy praises,
'Twas less for the sake of thy high-sounding phrases,
Than to see the bright eyes of the dear one discover,
She thought that I was not unworthy to love her.
There chiefly I sought thee, there only I found thee;
Her glance was the best of the rays that surround thee;
When it sparkled o'er aught that was bright in my story,
I knew it was love, and I felt it was glory."
— Lord Byron's "Stanzas Written on the Road Between Florence and Pisa" (November, 1821). What is illustrated here, and what I try to illustrate all throughout this assortment, is Byron's conflation of love and glory, and the idea that poetry and politics are both ways to deserve and achieve — not fame, but what fame seems to promise — love.
"But 'tis not thus—and 'tis not here
Such thoughts should shake my Soul, nor now,
Where Glory decks the hero's bier,
Or binds his brow.
The Sword, the Banner, and the Field,
Glory and Greece around us see!
The Spartan borne upon his shield
Was not more free.
Awake (not Greece—she is awake!)
Awake, my Spirit! Think through whom
Thy life-blood tracks its parent lake
And then strike home!"
— excerpt from Lord Byron's "On This Day I Complete My Thirty-Sxith Year" (1824).
"What are to me those honours and renown
Past or to come, a new-born people's cry
Albeit for such I could despise a crown
Of aught save Laurel, or for such could die;
I am the fool of passion, and a frown
Of thine to me is as an Adder's eye
To the poor bird whose pinion fluttering down
Wafts unto death the breast it bore so high –
Such is this maddening fascination grown –
So strong thy Magic - or so weak am I."
— although the much more popular and published "On This Day I Complete My Thirty-Sxith Year" is often believed to be Byron's last poem, the above is likely Byron's actual last poem. Like the former, it wasn't solely written for Greece, but for his page Lukas Chalandritsanos who he was in unrequited love (or lust) with. It is sometimes titled "Last Words on Greece" (named so by his friend and sometimes-editor Hobhouse).

Three Roman Graves Uncovered in Portugal
Three burials dating to the 5th or 6th century AD have been unearthed in the ancient Roman city of Ossónoba in Faro, southern Portugal.
The Ossónoba’s first archaeological evidence dates back to the 4th century B.C., when the Phoenicians settled in the Western Mediterranean. The city was then called Ossónoba From the 2nd century B.C. until the 8th A.D. the city was under Roman and Visigoth dominance being afterwards conquered by the Muslims in 713.
A team of archaeologists from ERA Arqueologia discovered ancient Roman structures and the remains of a man, woman, and child while conducting excavations over a 5,000 square meter area that will eventually house a real estate development.
The excavations, which took place before a construction project, revealed the grave of a man whose skeleton was complete and who would have been between 39 and 45 years old, as well as a young woman under the age of 25, and a baby who would have been no more than six months old, according to archaeologist Francisco Correa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Francisco Correia, the project’s head archaeologist, said in a statement that the discoveries were made in an old truck repair workshop and are believed to date from the 5th or 6th century.
The tombs appear to have been looted in the past to steal “small bracelets, necklaces, and rings,” according to anthropologist Cláudia Maio. The tombs indicate that the people may have had “some economic status” as they were not simply placed in open graves but instead buried in carefully built graves.
The proximity of the three people’s graves seems to indicate that they were family members, though the team cannot be certain of that. “But we cannot say anything for sure,” the anthropologist said.
To learn more, the researchers hope to be able to provide more precise answers through DNA tests and isotopic analysis techniques used to determine population movements and dietary habits from chemical traces in ancient human remains.
This latest archaeological discovery did not come as a surprise to archaeologists, who had already led similar works which resulted in the discovery of a Roman game artifact believed to date back to the first century AD in 2020.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We know that we are in an area with archaeological potential where there is a 17th-century convent (of Santo António dos Capuchos) to the west, and to the east lies the area where the mosaic of the Ocean God (Deus Oceano), now a national treasure, was found,” he said.
What did come as a surprise to archaeologists was the location of the tombs.
“Based on previous studies, this would have been an area that was possibly residential or more linked to industrial activities. There are many traces of salterns. Largo da Madalena would have been the entrance to the urban area of the city of Ossónoba. The identified graves are in the Figuras area, near Teatro Lethes, close to the Ermida de São Sebastião and the Pavilion of Escola D. Afonso III. This area is almost within the urban fabric,” the archaeologist explained, adding that this illustrates both the “growth and decline of Ossónoba.”
The graves of the man and the woman “were sealed with limestone slabs,” believed to be reused parts from “some of the most emblematic buildings that would have been here in the area,” he believes.
According to the project manager of ERA Arqueologia, who was co-responsible for the work, in addition to the graves, hundreds of small pieces were also discovered which suggest that there may also have been a mosaic there.
The researchers also recovered Roman artifacts in the area, including ceramics, bone dice, nails, pins, a spoon, possible evidence of a dye factory, and coins minted during the reign of Constantine the Great, between A.D. 306 and 337.

Here's an 1845 Tudor estate with castle towers on a mountain overlooking  Freshwater Cove and Gloucester Harbor in Gloucester, Massachusetts. 22bds, 16ba, 19ba, $9M. The description says residential, but it looks like it was a resort. (Maybe another Airbnb for sale?)
Tumblr media
This is some Tudor, isn't it? Now, who left their shoes in the middle of the floor?
Tumblr media
Very large sitting room with a sculpted ceiling and impressive fireplace.
Tumblr media
This is another another staircase outside the sitting room. I notice 1 broken spindle and a missing one. I wonder if that would be difficult to replace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sitting room's beautifully carved fireplace wall. There's a great view of the water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sitting room opens to a game room/library/exercise room.
Tumblr media
The dining room is set up for a lot of guests, and the first table has puzzles in progress. (Did you ever try to leave a puzzle out with a cat?)
Tumblr media
Look at the huge commercial kitchen. This was definitely a resort at one time. The 2 stoves are regular house models, though.
Tumblr media
Nice big bedroom, one of 22. This is all they show, as is usual for an expensive estate. They want appts. for buyers and serious ones, only. (No lookie loos, like us poor people.) Notice how they put a light fixture in each corner. That's different.
Tumblr media
They don't show the interior of the towers. They may be decorative- there are several where I used to live and they're just lookout towers, empty inside.
Tumblr media
Nice dock. I guess if you can afford a $9M house you can afford a boat, right?
Tumblr media
12 acres of property and the residence is at the edge of it, so there's plenty of room for expansion.
Tumblr media
Oh, there are hotels nearby. Maybe it was the competition. Looks like some shopping, too.
Tumblr media
I think that the house is private, away from the hustle & bustle, but still close enough to all the services. If I was a gazillionaire I'd consider it.

in honor of my backache from sleeping in my nest on the floor last night (a hardwood floor covered with a sheepskin and a throw blanket) i wanna talk about nest mattresses! in real life and worldbuilding. disclaimer that my knowledge comes from mostly online so it’s probably not completely accurate.
so! cool floor beds i found that would make good nest bases.
the type of bed i could find the most on online is the Japanese futon. it’s what the western futon/sofa bed was originally modeled after but it’s very different. it’s basically a very thin mattress (shikifuton) over tatami mats (rush grass outer layer with a foam or rice straw core). both parts are much more moveable than a western style mattress. another important consideration i think is relevant is that futon covers go all the way around the mattress and can be washed (unlike western sheets which leave the bottom of the mattress uncovered which if it’s on the floor can get gross). futons are also meant to be aired out in the sun, which helps the whole dust thing.
Tumblr media
another cool bed type i found are montessori-style house beds. they’re typically used for young children (toddlers and preschoolers) but do come in larger sizes (the biggest i’ve seen is a full). the bed frame sits directly on the floor with a thin mattress and a wooden house-shape on top that can support a canopy/curtains (which would be super cool for a nest lets be real). some also come with bed rails and bumpers so little kids don’t fall out, which i think would also be good for a nest because it’s more cozy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
of course i must mention the “human dog beds” which gained popularity in 2022 from going on shark tank but i remember first hearing about them around 2015-ish (and of course going that would make a great nest!). it is what it sounds like.
Tumblr media
another, probably the cheapest option here, is camping mattresses. you know what these are. super thin air mattresses with foam tops. some come in double width (better for a nest imo) but most of them are made of that terrible slippery fabric (good for camping, bad for everything else). this might not be a problem for most people but i’m autistic and i gag touching them. you could cover it with a rug or blanket but those might slip off of it due to the gross slipperiness of the fabric. idk.
Tumblr media
the last thing i can think of are traditional mattresses that are just. thin. you could use a mattress topper but a real mattress would definitely feel better even if they’re the same height because real mattresses have a comfort layer and a base layer and a topper only has the comfort layer (=more back pain for you). consider: dorm mattresses (at least my dorm had them, and it made an amazing nest), rv mattresses, and trundle mattresses. they’re all basically the same thing just different keywords (and slightly different sizes for the rvs). my sister has slept on a 4 inch mattress for six years or so and she only occasionally complains of back pain but for occasional use it would be fine (she also has scoliosis so. could be that).
Tumblr media
now for some quick worldbuilding notes:
i definitely think that in an omegaverse society nest mattresses would be common. i think they would mimic traditional mattresses but shorter, like rv mattresses, but have an all-around washable cover/sheets to protect from floor grossness, sort of like dorm mattresses but able to be washed more easily. i also think they would come in more square or round shapes instead of the typical rectangle twin shape. i can see them having folding capabilities like some rv mattresses do, so that people could sun them like futons to get rid of dust mites.
i can also see nest frames being a thing, sort of like the montessori bedframes, with pillow bumpers to make a more enclosed vibe. i can also see a huge market for both frame-mounted or ceiling-mounted canopies, because who doesn’t want that.
maybe houses would be built with specific nest areas in mind, maybe with softer floors like tatami vibes or carpet. i’ve heard talk about conversation pits which are absolutely so cool but i can also see the advantage in an elevated nest space. my favorite nest of all time was in a ceiling cabinet because i could see the whole room but was harder to see myself, which made me feel really safe. so maybe houses might be built with raised nest platforms, or even small ceiling lofts overlooking a larger room (i couldn’t find an exact picture of what i’m thinking but this is close:)

You were right about tankies. They do not talk about tiananmen square. They do not talk about Tibet. They do not talk about uyghur. Wtf. No how is this possible? What?
The thing is that most white and western leftists are exactly as racist, imperialist, ethnocentric and tinhatted as right-wingers. For Global South people there's literally no difference in interacting with them sometimes, even if they talk more sense by virtue of their leftist politics. In that, they have a lot in common with liberals; they say all the right things until they're challenged in any meaningful way, which is when the mask slips.
Self-serving, egoistic people aren't saved by reading a bunch of political posts and books. True dedication to social justice requires humility first and foremost, a solid set of ethical and moral hard lines in engagement, and constant self-interrogation. It has to be moved by compassion for your fellow human and sense of accountability, not ideological fanaticism as result of personal disenfranchisement and sense of victimization at being excluded from privilege. Marxists (not even just Tankies) love to accuse conservatives and liberals of unquestioning ideological servitude and selfishness without ever looking in the mirror. They have absolutely no racial or decolonial praxis because that primarily involves listening and centering colonized and Global South people, instead of amplifying themselves to virtue-signal and chase clout.
In essence they're just bad human beings, exactly like every other self-victimizing, self-aggrandizing Zionist, TERF and MAGA-hat (both red and blue) that treat accountability like a personal threat and place ideology over human beings. That's why I say it's important to separate politics from your morals and ethics. Your politics are supposed to change but your moral and ethical foundation cannot.
Personally I take great comfort in being proven wrong about my beliefs almost daily. At least 95% of everything I have ever assumed to be true has been proven wrong, which is what gives me more confidence in the remaining 5%. I love being wrong because knowing that means I'm doing something right. I see so many people on here be the same way, it's honestly lovely and gives me faith and hope for humanity. That's real leftism.

So, this is the start of my list. Probably only to be buried, but hey, at least I know I made the attempt. *shrugs*

ASTRO OBSERVATIONS 777
First: Stop judging people by their natal charts or by their horoscopes(even more stupid) and making limiting statements/conclusions. You have no idea how much a person could have worked their charts and you don’t know the aspects, degrees and houses this person has¡¡¡😤
Tumblr media
☾Pluto is like a Black Sun: I say this because its influence is so strong that even in conjunctions and squares of 10 orbs, its influence is still very powerful, for example: I have Mercury conjunct Pluto (9 orbs) and people say that my gaze is very penetrating, sometimes I notice that people feel uncomfortable when I make eye contact with them, when I study something I study obsessively non-stoping, sometimes I can immediately see people's emotional problems/traumas, and I can see through their masks and their weak points as if I were wearing x-ray glasses, and sometimes without realizing I say things that hurt, trigger people. Many people have told me that they love my voice too(well stop talking about me). With trines his influence is still strong but much more friendly and with sextiles his influence is soft and too diplomatic that the native has to Digg deep to find/connect with his influence. ☾Venus in Taurus or Taurus degrees(2, 14, 26): They are very sensual, they love physical pleasure, they may have partners who find them very sensual, loves junk food, have artistic abilities, they have a love for aesthetics and beauty that they could be with a person just for their beauty aesthetics, with alcohol they can become very s*xual (like God Pan Archetype)and they are romantics af. ☾Venus in 3th House or Venus conjunct Mercury: beautiful and seductive voices, they seduce you with their speech, quite sensual, charming, they are very loved at school, social skills, persuasive, they have creative abilities, very intelligent people, they know exactly what to say at the right moments and people love to see them smile. ☾Neptune in 8th house: Could use drugs during s*x just to alter their states, they can have trascendental experiences during s*x(but only with people they love), tantra, they have to be careful to lower their vibration too much because they can connect with lower vibration entities(lower astral), there is a strong attraction for death, they want to die during s*xual intercourse, spiritual gifts, great intuitive abilities, can have powerful trips with psychedelics. ☾Uranus in 8th house: they already know society and the collective unconscious/consciousness very well without even interacting with it, they love everything that is taboo, different and kinky. They may have s*xual partners that are very different from them, they are very electric in intimacy, they may have sudden encounters with death, their stamina is very irregular and unpredictable, for example: they may be having s*x with you and cum very fast(P.E) and out of nowhere they can fuck you all day/night, it all depends on how unpredictable and different the interaction is, since that's what turns them on. Talented for astrology, tarot, oracles, telepathy, witchcraft, and everything that is occult, holistic and spiritual(random observation here: they may have extraterrestrial contact or contact with beings from other dimensions). ☾Mars in 8th house in vedic or Mars dominant people in western astrology: when life brings them down, when they encounter obstacles, when someone lies to them, when they see someone abusive, when someone judges them, when someone is very arrogant with them, when there are money problems, when someone in their project is very lazy or flaky, they become this type of energy:  1)https://tenor.com/es-419/view/jujutsu-kaisen-jujutsu-kaisen0-movie-jjk-yuta-gif-23677991 2)https://tenor.com/es-419/view/jjk-jujutsu-kaisen-fushiguro-megumi-gif-20813461 ☾Mercury conjunct Chiron: Have very healing and gentle voices/speech, overthinkers, OCD, intrusive thoughts,  they may really like instrumental music since it helps them think more clearly and if they truly connect with their heart space/chakra or their inner healer they can heal you with their words, such as they can say you: "don't worry, everything will be fine" and  they can calm your entire nervous system. ☾Mercury in Aries or Aries degrees(1, 13, 25): dominant speech, intrepid, blunt, impatient, harsh speech, gets easily irritated, but at the same time very friendly, very active intellect, if they get angry their words can feel like punches, they like to argue, they talk very loud, love gambling, they love to shout, have competitive minds, they love Videogames/Movies/Series that include topics such as violence, war and fighting like “Call of Duty”, ”God of War”, “Vikings”, “Gangs of New York”. They can be very good trainers/coaches as well because they understand sports very well, or they can even be very good teachers since they won't let you fall asleep. ☾Moon square Mars: I'm going to speak from a native here: We don't hate women, what happens is that s*x  is something very precious for us and we are very passionate about it, we are very demisexual and we crave intimacy. What bothers us is to see women talking/treating sex in such a superficial and vulgar way, we definitely hate that. So we can develop a lot of hatred towards all these "empowerment" movements that make them treat themselves as if they were goddesses/gods, that promote a lot of self-love but without knowing themselves, just inflating their egos (which is quite sad because these movements end up generating quite arrogant, apathetic, narcissistic and deep down empty people). The unconscious impulse here is to try to beat them at their own game due to their competitive energy, which is why it may seem that many men with this position hate women. 🌿Postscript: you can’t love yourself if you don’t know yourself first, that’s why love is secondary. If you distance yourself gradually from your ego &  personality(meditating, doing yoga or etc) and start discovering your authentic self, love will come by itself and you will naturally love yourself first because it will be your first encounter. Love will become your spontaneous nature. The same with confidence, genuine confidence only comes with clarity and perception!🌿

What are the advantages of fore and aft rigs vs square rigs?
Hi,
The fore and aft rig, or schooner rig, required only a small crew, and was generally used in the coastal and fishing trades. Ships with this rig could point higher into the wind and were usually more maneuverable when working in the changing winds along the coast. The rig was not limited to coastal schooners, and big fore-and-afters could be seen plying across the Western Ocean bound for European ports, the West Indies, or South America.
The square rig was normally an offshore rig used by vessels making long ocean passages and taking advantage of the prevailing wind and current patterns of the globe. These ships varied in size from the small handy brigantines and brigs of a couple of hundred tons to the great full rigged ships and barques of over two thousand tons. The square rig was also seen in the coastal trade, where brigs plied their trade up and down the eastern seaboard.
I hope it will help you and have a nice day

Sassanid silver plate 7th C. CE. Decorated with a figure seated on a couch in a crescent moon and a figure standing in an archway. Found in Klimova, Russia in 1907. The base of the vessel appears to have runic script scratched into it. This item is sometimes referred to as The ‘Clock of Khosrow’ or The ‘Throne of Khosrow’ Plate. Diameter: 21.6cm.
I'm just going to do a brief summary of what caused Persia to fall to Islam.
The Islamic invasion of Persia began sometime between 628-632 CE. From 541 CE to this time Persia had been exhausted by an almost constant state of war. Most of the fighting was with the Byzantine Empire in the west: The Lazic War (541-562), Byzantine–Sasanian War of 572–591, Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628.
However, there were also wars with the Turks to the north and the east: Perso-Turkic war of 588–589, Perso-Turkic war of 606–608, Perso-Turkic war of 627–629. In this final war the Byzantines and Turks were allies. This alliance took time to come into being but had been sought out by the Turks almost immediately after they destroyed the Hephthalites, indicating they planned to do to the Persians what they had done to the Huns. The medieval historian Movses Kaghankatvatsi described the war of 627-629:
"At the arrival of the all-powerful scourge (universal wrath) confronting us, the invaders [Turks], like billowing waves of the sea, crashed against the walls and demolished them to their foundations. [In Partaw], seeing the terrible danger from the multitude of hideously ugly, vile, broad-faced, without eyelashes, and with long flowing hair like women, which descended upon them, a great terror (trembling) seized the inhabitants. They were even more horrified when they saw the accurate and strong [Khazar] archers, whose arrows rained down upon them like heavy hailstones, and how they [Khazars], like ravenous wolves that had lost all shame, fell upon them and mercilessly slaughtered them on the streets and squares of the city. Their eyes had no mercy for neither the beautiful, nor handsome, nor the young men or women; they did not spare even the unfit, harmless, lame, nor old; they had no pity (compassion, regrets), and their hearts did not shrink at the sight of the babies embracing their murdered mothers; to the contrary, they suckled blood from their breasts like milk."
Ironically, the Sassanid ruler Khosrow I had married a Turkic princess to win an alliance with them so the two could destroy the Huns together in 560 CE at the Battle of Gol-Zarriun. Khosrow I chose his Turkic progeny, Hormizd IV, as ruler over his Persian children. From Iranica Online:
"Hormozd’s character displeased everyone. He antagonized the Zoroastrian clergy, allegedly killing many of them, even the chief mowbed, and alienated the nobility by killing thousands of them (Ṭabari, I, p. 991; tr., V, pp. 297-98; Balʿami, ed. Bahār, pp. 1072-73; Masʿudi, Moruj, ed. Pellat, sec. 632; Šāh-nāma, Moscow, VIII, pp. 319 ff.). In diplomacy he showed inflexibility, even poor judgement. He disrupted the peace negotiations with the Byzantines and made demands (payment of “tribute”) that the Romans could not accept (Menander, frag., 23.9-24-12529). His contemporary, Menander Protector, lamented that “the Romans and the Persians would have made peace, had not Ḵosrow left this life and his son, Hormisdas [Hormizd IV], a truly wicked man, assumed the crown” (tr., pp. 207-9)."
Finally the Sassanid Empire went into a civil war from 628-632 CE where it had become politically decentralized. The Plague of Sheroe also occurred in 627-628 CE, most heavily devastating the populations in the western provinces with some areas experiencing a 50% mortality rate. Afterward, the Arab Muslims flooded into an already ravaged Persia like bacteria infesting an open wound.

at the risk of sounding like playa hater of the year or (worse!) repeating myself. i think ep3 w/ louis telling lestat off about jackson square & the scenes with jonah&louis truly sold me on the whole color conscious casting. i think ive talked about or at least mentioned the real history of lynchings , how black charas r typically depicted in a horror & how louis killing the alderman was playing off both of those things there b4 so i wont repeat myself too much in regard to that lol. itll be abt jonah+ louis scene here. n ep1&2 was great of course & this is by no means disparaging that. but seeing how louis + jonah interacted truly was .. a lot for lil ol me. like i think that sold me on the colo consciousness of this show bc it truly did feel like these were black male characters, not black characters w/ white faces or pawns for white guilt overcorrecting . like these are characters. keith powell, a black man, directed this episode and it shows. there was a lot going on there w/ the body language, flirting, the use of vernacular, that all set a stage in a few minutes for a true sense of past intimacy these characters once shared and how this scene is both a hello & goodbye to that. one: giving louis a ‘past love’ with some of the same sentiment as lestat’s ‘past love’ with nicki was definitely profound. (bc babette was definitely not that. tho i do think how jonah&louis meet in europe later will be inspired by that?). even if it was a few affairs in the dark the show did a good job with the implications of jonah+louis being once past lovers+shared confidants in their sexuality/race. and drawing upon how modern louis viewed this: while the domestic front simmered on [vampire] diet and sanctioned infidelity, the western front started receiving american troops… and city ordinance 4118 [jim crow law] ensured uncle sam’s money went in ‘the right hands’. hes saying a lot in those few sentences. the historical situation of ww1, a transitory time in western history that these black men (& vampire) are situated in and how they choose to survive going forward. jonah going to europe to fight the war as an ‘escape’ from the repressive regime u live under to be ur ‘truer self’ v. past!louis rly believing his newly bestowed immortality & companion in such can give u some more time to hold onto what he has , even as the clock strikes twelve. anyways got off track here all is this to say i rly loved this scene btwn jonah+louis cuz they felt like real black men from the deep souf flirting w/ eachother in the dark and that along w/ what louis said abt jackson square in the beginning of this same episode sold me on the color conscious casting bit. like these people know how to write complex black characters & how they maneuver in a semi realistic setting for real.
