Singer-songwriter Yuju On “Dalala”, Liberation And Staying True To Herself

A member of once-famed girl group GFRIEND, singer-songwriter Yuju says one of her most liberating moments is when she strolls down the bustling streets of Gangnam, going unnoticed by anyone.

With a cap over her head and mask covering the face, Yuju says she often goes on such night strolls in the glitzy neighborhood to get closer to the people and feel the energy.

It was on one of those nights that her new song, “Dalala” was born, the singer recalled during an interview with local media on Tuesday. As she watched people with earphones passing on the streets, the first few lines of the song popped up in her mind.

“Dalala” is a song about such liberating sensation. At the same time, it turned out to become a source of liberation in itself, the singer explained.

The new digital single comes six months after she put out her second EP, “O” an autobiographical album reflecting on the emotions she’d experienced in her nine-year music career.

The exhausting production process nudged her into trying something more freewheeling. She found herself humming casually as she tried to release herself of thoughts.

“When people hum a melody that they don’t know the lyrics to, they usually sing ‘dalala.’ That became the first inspiration. Because my previous album was such a contemplative one, I wondered what I would get if I went for the complete opposite and emptied my mind. The song started from such simple curiosity.” Yuju said Tuesday.

“Dalala” is the first song that Yuju has been credited as the main composer and the sole lyricist. The singer recalls this was possible because she didn’t pressure herself to make a song but jumped into the process naturally.

“It was a sort of uncertainty, now I think of it. I didn’t believe I was ready to write my own title track and since there are so many other talented songwriters. For the first time, I broke out of the box and composed. I was confident that this time it was mine.” she said.

The song is a pleasant and easy-listening tune, but Yuju says the process of creating was not a breeze. To deliver her genuine emotions, the singer attempted self-recording for the first time.

“There are ups and downs. I could sing however I wish, but that way, I might get swept by emotions and lose the objective ear. I struggled to keep my balance, while at the same time, holding onto that initial spark in my heart that had turned into this song.” Yuju said.

The music video was an incarnation of the subtle infusion of her reality and fantasy, she said. She worked closely with the music video director to convey her ideas onto screen.

“There’s a scene where I’m dancing alone inside an empty lift. Then someone gets on, and I freeze, embarrassed. Like that, the music video conveys that, although I act as if I’m unconcerned about others, I’m actually not. I suppose it’s something I can tackle with time as I get to know myself better.” she said.

All her music is a reflection of her current self, and despite the song’s cheerful mood, Yuju wanted to make sure that the song and the music video was not portrayed as lighthearted.

“As unintentional as its start may have been, the song was inspired from an idea that resulted from my most pensive period in life. I stressed to the director that I wanted the gravity to show in the beginning and the end of the film.” Yuju said.

Just as “Dalala” had released Yuju from her own bounds, she hoped the song could free listeners, even for about three minutes.

Debuting solo in January 2022, around seven years since her 2015 debut as part of the now-defunct group GFRIEND, Yuju now feels she can rely on herself. The budding singer-songwriter said her goal is to define her own musical genre – “Yuju’s genre” – through her upcoming solo career.

More important for this genre, rather than the musical talent, is staying true to her virtues, she said.

“Music in essence is about empathy, and to do that, I need to strive to stay down to earth and compassionate with others.” she said.

“As an artist, I hope to be independent, capable of making my own music. I’ve always revered people who have a genuine passion for what they do, and I hope that is how I could be perceived in the future.”

Rules, kinks and favorite idols/groups

I've had this blog for a while but finally I'm not busy enough to keep it active. So there are the rules:

Idols must be 18 or older (obviously).

Sex must always be consensual.

You rise from the ground like a man reborn into a world of fantasy. Though your feet don’t move, your body does. The escalator lifts you up and spits you out into lands unknown—into Lotte World.

Colourful castles. Houses with painted roofs. Bright lights illuminate carousels and stalls. Steel tracks meander through the buildings carrying laughing adolescence. Screams. Cheers. Laughter. All manner of exclamations of joy fill the air.

The roof is so high that you can’t even muster a guess at how many people it takes to change a lightbulb. The glass dome above allows the musky afternoon sunlight to fall into the open area. Distant rooftops outline the immense building. Fake hot air balloons drift along the roof, carrying omniscient observers.

You rest on the railing to soak in your environment. Mesmeric are the skaters below as they weave in and out of each other—an impromptu choreography of flowing movements. Some sweep, some glide, some cut sharply between others. The bird's eye view makes the chaos below seem so organised.

Close-knit families are dragged along by their children’s giddy excitement, whether for a celebration or an escape from mundane life. Clusters of friends share joyful experiences together and bond over their mutual amusement. Young love blossoms between couples who enjoy each other's company and walk hand in hand—in a search for the next photo opportunity or couple activity.

The ensemble continues around you; sounds of life provide that lulling background sound like the shushing sound of rain that reassures you on a night that sometimes, it’s okay to do nothing. The song of life continues around you, and you consider what your own verse should be.

As if to save you, like you just fired a flare from a sinking ship. From the crowd, a bright face approaches you. Her smile shines at you like a lighthouse beam piercing the fog—the two glinting gems in her face lock to your own.

“Tiger or mouse?”

“Um, are you talking to me?” Your response makes the girl puff out her cheeks and pout her plump heart-shaped lips before letting out a long sigh.

“Well, yeah. Who else am I talking to? So pick one, tiger or mouse?”

“I don’t understa—”

“I’m trying to decide which headband to buy, tiger or mouse?”

“Oh, um, tiger, I guess.”

And with your answer finally extracted, the girl with the bobbed hair disappears almost as quickly as she appeared. The small skips in her step cause the frilled trim of her short skirt to bounce playfully in the air. As she gets further away, the crowds close in front of her like curtains at a stage play, and she is lost again in the eager mass.

The desire to capture a fleeting experience is challenging to explain. The abrupt beginning and end of your interaction gave you no chance to savour it—no chance to savour her enchanting beauty. Still, that brief exchange is one you wish you could relive.

You take but a single step away to continue your uncertain journey before a now familiar voice calls out behind you.

“Hey! Where are you going?”

You turn to find the girl with her face cupped in the palms of her hands and her head tilted slightly as she poses for you. “What do you think?” she asks.

“What happened to ‘tiger or mouse’?”

“Well, I was looking at the tiger, and then I saw the bow, and I wanted it. It’s cute, right?” She learns her head forward to present the bow to you. She shakes her head lightly. Her silken black hair joins the dance atop her head. The black velvet gushes through the air and flops side to side. A flurry of soft textures flows like the tides.

“It suits you.”

“Thank you.” The girl grins widely, and her cheeks resonate a faint pink hue.

“Well, enjoy the rest of your day,” you say as you slightly bow your head.

“Let’s enjoy it together. Come on.” She takes your hand in hers; her hand cups yours in a tight clasp. She skips away frivolously with you in tow. You stumble a little to keep up with the excited young woman whose soft hands demand you to follow.

You call out with only your name, and she stops in her tracks. “Huh?”

“That’s my name. You never asked for it.”

“Oh yeah, silly me. I’m Eunha. Now stop standing there wasting time. I want to ride in one of those.” Eunha points up to the sky. You trace her finger to where the hot air balloons you spied earlier drift along the roof.

You plant your feet as she tries to pull you away again. The velvet texture of her skin slides along your fingers until your hand is free from her hold.

“What’s wrong?” She asks through pouted lips.

“You don’t even know who I am, and you’re pulling me away to some ride. Didn’t anyone teach you about stranger danger?”

“So you mean you don’t recognise me?”

It hits you hard, like a train, how oblivious you have been. “Those company meetings. I saw you there, right?”

“Seriously? How long have you been at the company now?”

“Um, almost a month?”

“And you don’t know the company’s biggest star?” She points to herself, twirls, and poses. A waterfall of memories comes back to you. Suddenly, you can see the meeting rooms clearly now without being buried in your work. Now you see this beautiful girl silently sitting and listening. Always smiling, she radiates happiness into the room.

“Oh, um, well, I am new, and I only work in my department, and I don’t know many people. And I’m bad with faces-” you spew a series of half-hearted excuses.

“And your face is bright red. And you’re blabbering like a fool. Anything else?”

“Um, sorry, I guess?”

She giggles at your flustered state. “Your boss told me you were coming here alone. Why did you come alone?” she asks as she takes your hand in hers again, leading you up to the park’s highest point.

Walking by her side with your helpless hand cupped inside Eunha’s, you continue your conversation, “I got the free ticket, but I didn’t have anyone to come with, so I decided to come alone.”

“So, you don’t have any friends?” she jests at your expense.

“I have friends, but I’m new into town and—”

“You don’t have to keep explaining yourself.” Eunha laughs to herself at your awkward defence. “Besides, you have me now. Come on, just a little further.” She picks up her pace again, towing you along to your destination. You weave between groups of people guided by your new friend as she nimbly picks a path through the crowd.

Along your way, Eunha stops several times every time she spots a new cute item for sale, a snack to eat or a game to try. She is surprisingly good at the one where you throw darts at cards—a game you quickly ask to move on from after she outscores you twice. Eunha leads you from ride to ride and you are more than willing to spend time with her.

What should have been a few minutes of walking, became hours of time. With enough minor distractions finished, she guides you to the stairs to the top indoor floor.

Thankfully, the queues are minimal. As quickly as you arrive, you are guided to an empty balloon. The attendant greets you and directs you. “Good afternoon, sir. You and your girlfriend can take this balloon right here. Enjoy the ride.” He eye-smiles a little as he speaks. You can’t see his mouth because of his mask, but you are sure he is grinning widely at you.

“Oh, we aren’t—” Eunha tugs on your hand before you can finish correcting the attendant. You nestle yourself into the small basket alongside Eunha.

“Please keep your hands inside the ride at all times.” The attendant says as he locks the door.

The contraption whirrs above your head, and the mechanism pulls your ride into motion. The transition from the commotion down below to the intimate tranquillity is jarring. No longer are you fighting through crowds; it’s just you and Eunha.

“This is nice,” you say solemnly.

“I know, right! I feel like a god. Look at all those ants down there.” Eunha replies as energetically as ever. “I feel like I could just pick them up and move them around.” Eunha raises her hand in front of her face with her thumb and forefinger pointing downwards. She makes a pinching motion, swings her arms around and releases the imaginary person.

A wide grin covers her lower face. Her pearly white teeth separate her pastel pink lips. Her eyes squint, and her nose scrunches as she giggles at herself. She found her own game amusing as she continues playing puppet master of those below.

“You know the attendant said, arms inside at all times, right?” You place your hand on her upper arm and pull it down. Your hand slides down her satin skin under you find your hand interlocked with hers. For the first time today, you’re holding her hand as much as she is holding yours.

“The guy in the red shirt by the carousel. What do you think he’s doing?” Eunha asks.

You squint a little to make out the man she spoke of. He’s a young adult with a slim build and fair hair. He stands with his arms crossed and leans against the carousel’s railing. “Um, he’s just standing there.”

“Duh!” Eunha flicks you on the temple. “I mean, what do you think he’s doing? Get creative.”

You think intensely for a moment. He’s alone, but he isn’t going anywhere, so he must be waiting for something. He’s a young man in his early twenties, so he’s likely not married, but he could have a girlfriend. “Okay, I’ve got it,” you say confidently. “He’s waiting for his girlfriend to finish a ride that he didn’t want to go on.”

“Boooooring!” Eunha teases. “I think he’s an international assassin, and he’s waiting for a public illegal business deal between worldwide corporations. His target has been moving on a rival’s business, so he has to take them out.”

As Eunha finishes her sentence, a young girl steps through the crowd and into the red-shirted man’s open arms. They embrace, exchange a few words and walk away hand-in-hand.

“I don’t know, Eunha. That looks like I got it right.” You face her again. Her face now adorns a scowl.

“Okay, but mine would have been much more fun.”

“Do you do this often? Imagine elaborate stories for people? What about me? Who am I?”

“That’s easy,” Eunha scoffs. “You’re fresh out of university. You scored moderately well. You used to live with your parents until you landed a fancy junior role at my entertainment company, and you’re single. How was that?”

“Surprisingly accurate, but not very fun.”

“That’s because it’s all pretty obvious and I’m not making some crazy story for you. I’d like to know the real you, not some fantasy story.” Eunha blushes slightly as she realises her admission of interest in you. She attempts to brush it off by changing the subject. “Do you know why I enjoy thinking of stories for people?”

“Because you think their normal life is boring?”

“Hmmm, not really.” Eunha ponders for a moment. “I think everyone’s life is exciting. To us, everyone down there is just an extra, but in their own lives, they’re the main character. Everyone has their own motivations, experiences, emotions, fears, likes and dislikes. I like to think about how different other lives can be. Isn’t that beautiful?”

“It is.” You focus only on her. Her porcelain skin glows as it reflects the fading sunlight from above. Her double-lidded eyes are open wide as she gazes down at the people below. There is a light glaze of excitement in her eyes like a child in a candy shop, and the corners of her mouth upturn slightly.

“So, what do you think about me?” Eunha asks while she turns to face you. Her eyes lock with yours. So many words can be exchanged in a glance without a single one being spoken. The eyes are the windows into the soul, the door to a room containing someone’s actual being, and you’re on the outside, looking in. All of her emotions bubble to the surface in those moments, and you see Eunha in her most raw form.

“You’re empathetic. I see how much you care for others. You grew up with a loving family who taught you to be trustworthy and caring.” Eunha’s right eye twitches slightly as if she just opened another door inside the house and exposed another part of herself. “But your childhood wasn’t easy. It made you emotionally strong, and that’s why you’re so good at helping others. You love to entertain people, to see them smile. That’s why you’re sharing this game with me, and it’s why you chose to become an entertainer.”

There’s a feeling deep down within you that you didn’t want to share with her. In her deep black bottomless eyes, you can see that a part of her is missing. She is happy, but she longs for something more.

“You’re good,” she says while still holding eye contact. She moves just half a step closer. Close enough for her heated breath to touch your lips. Close enough for the orange blossom scent with undertones of amber, which you had picked up faint traces of before, to fill your nose. Close enough for the magnetic pull of her cherry lips to demand you to kiss them. “But I think you missed something important.”

“You’re right. I forgot to tell you how beautiful you are. How completely intoxicating you are.” The light pink of Eunha’s cheeks transitions to a deep red. Her ears are inflamed, and her eyes fight against the desire to look down out of embarrassment.

“Thank you for being so kind to me. Thank you for spending today with me.” Eunha’s smile widens. “It’s been so long since I was able to enjoy my time with someone like this. Too long.”

“It was my pleasure, Eunha.” You slowly raise your left arm until it brushes lightly against her hip. Eunha’s hips hold the weight of your arm as you relax your digits against her body. The hand that held hers trails back up her arm’s delicate skin until it finds a resting place on her shoulder. She reciprocates your hold with a soft hold around your lower back. An almost supernatural push to the back of your head forces your lips tantalisingly close to hers. The tension between you is so thick you can see it.

“I’m not going to kiss you,” Eunha says before looking solemnly at her feet. Her forehead finds itself snugly pressed against your chest. The slow moving balloon jolts as it comes to a stop. You both stumble and reach out for a railing to stop yourselves from falling. Gone is her sensitive touch. Gone is the feeling that you held the entire world in your arms. “If we kiss, then all of this becomes real.”

“This is real, Eunha. It might feel like a dream, but trust me, this is real.” You pinch your own arm. “See, I didn’t wake up.”

The next balloon along is being offloaded and restocked with the next waiting couple. The attendant will open the door to your basket in just a few moments.

“It’s not that,” Eunha replies. She opens her mouth to continue speaking, but nothing comes out. Bewilderment fills her face as she doesn’t know how to continue.

The attendant unlocks the door and swings it open to present you back onto solid ground. “I hope you enjoyed the view. If you don’t mind, I recommend following this path. There’s a secluded overlook that’s great for couple photos.” This time you know better than to try to correct him. You instead offer him your thanks and follow Eunha off the balloon. She doesn’t stop to wait. She follows the path, instead, toward the secluded spot.

“Hey, Eunha!” You call as you catch up to her. Her face is representative of her sombre mood.

“I’m sorry this isn’t everything you wanted, but there’s something you missed about me earlier. The truth is, I’m a pretty lonely person.” The real truth is, you could see that all along. Deep down inside, you knew she was lonely; you saw it in her eyes. “I work long hours, and I work unusual hours. I could be practising or filming at 5 am and sleep through the day. I’m constantly travelling from one place to the next, meeting new people and always doing something. I love it. I wouldn’t change it for the world. But sometimes, I realise it makes me impossible to date.”

You can’t find the right words to make all of this go away. A tear forms in the corner of Eunha’s left eye, which she catches before it can fall. Einstein famously said that time is an illusion. Seconds often pass by in just that, a second. But for you, each second seems to last a whole minute as you scramble to find the right words.

Eunha breaks the silence. “Hey, I have an idea; how about one more game? I need you to close your eyes and count to ten.”

“Eunha, I—”

“Trust me.” She reaches for and squeezes your hand for a second before letting it fall back to your side. You close your eyes tight so that the darkness swallows you.

“One…

Two…

Three…

Four…

Five…

Six…

Seven…

Eight…

Nine…

Ten.”

You open your eyes. The light floods in and fills your most dominant sense with stimuli again. Everything is the same around you, the small path you walked down, the fancy rooftops, the lights above you. You look all around you, one complete rotation, scanning your surroundings. You’re alone.

Before you know it, you’re bolting. You rush through the crowd. Shoulders hit shoulders. You trip. You stumble. You get in a lot of people’s way. Most importantly, however, you move quickly. Your feet pound on the floor as you dash towards the exit. You reach the stairs down to the main entrance. Two at a time—you almost leap down them.

You burst out from the crowd at the main entrance into the slowly cooling evening. The sky has darkened significantly because of a series of dark clouds, and there is a chill in the air. The heavens have begun to open, and rain falls lightly from the clouds above. None of that matters now. You continue towards the street.

You look left, then right. There she is. Just a few steps away, Eunha stands by the road, with her arms folded and head hung low.

“Eunha!” She reluctantly turns to face you. Her face is covered in a concoction of rainwater and tears. The light rain had begun to sodden her hair, and along with it, the pretty black bow that sits upon her head. “I don’t care about your awful hours. How busy you are. All the travelling. I don’t care. Every hour you aren’t with me will only make the ones where you are with me more special.” You close the distance to her to just one step. “I’m not saying things will be perfect. I’m not saying it won’t be difficult. I am saying that you’re worth the effort of trying. Let’s make our own exciting story.”

Her face lights up to replace the sun which is setting. Her bright smile warms the cold chilling air. She leaps at you, lips first into a kiss. You wrap your arms around her upper body and catch her in the air. Her soft lips finally make contact with your own. The strawberry lipstick taste fills your mouth alongside her hot breath. The now all too familiar orange blossom perfume broke through the smell of rain. You become oblivious to the rain in the sky as every fibre of your being has a singular focus—Eunha.
