For the past 30 days we have been bombarded with advertisements from companies large and small - ads covered in ‘gay’ buzzwords, studded with rainbows, and all sorts of images and rhetoric showing the gay community how supportive an ally they are.

Tomorrow, on July 1st - take a look again and see how many of these companies drop their ‘gay hook’ and turn back into non-supportive asswipes that will again next June proclaim how supportive they are of gays. All they wanted was your ‘gay dollars’ and nothing else. Don’t be fooled into supporting them. Do not support any companies that are ‘gay friendly’ for 30 days out of 365. They are not your friends. Support gay businesses! 🌈🧡💛💚💙💜

i came out to my extended family (or, rather i had my mom come out to them for me) at the end of 2020.

my mom said my grandma just said "okay." and same with one of my uncles. my other uncle called me and told me it's fine. but my grandpa sent me an email. it's the black text with the white background in the post.

i was working through this acceptance and commitment therapy workbook at the time, and one of the exercises was rewriting narratives you tell yourself. i had the idea of rewriting his whole email, re-using every single letter, into something positive. the white text on the black background was the result.

i was really proud of myself for being able to take such a negative email and turn it into something positive.

but the thing is, this should have never happened. i should have been raised in a queer-friendly (hell, even queer-supportive) environment. my mom should have berated my grandpa for this email. she shouldn't have equated his pain of finding out i'm queer to my pain of not being accepted by my family.

i haven't been validated by my family since childhood. i was scolded for doing child-like things. i was expected to be a good, obedient, catholic girl. i am none of those things now and never want to be.

i'm 27 and it's taken 27 long years to get to where i am now. that's unacceptable.

homophobia hurts people. it leaves them traumatized. i'm so glad it's less prevalent for the younger generations. but it still exists. we must eradicate it. we cannot keep letting children be traumatized. so, speak up when you see something. defend queer rights. help us all create a more accepting and supportive future. sometimes we're just so tried to do it ourselves.

We know the uncertainty you face and the fear that now taints a time of self-discovery and growth, but you aren’t alone. We are launching this journal as a reminder that our community is alive and thriving and that no matter how many of our stories are stripped from shelves, or how many young people are forbidden to speak about themselves, we will continue to be.  This journal's staff seek to give youths a voice in this time of forced silence. Our identities— how we see and define ourselves and who we choose to love— are ours alone. No one has the right to silence, degrade, or invalidate the existence of another person. Our stories, and thus our presence in the country’s narrative, are under attack. If schools are going to be forced into narrow-minded discriminatory regulations, then we will resist. We will continue to create spaces for the LGBTQ+ community. Let’s Say Gay is a place where young artists can tell their stories. A place where we all can, and will, say gay. Or maybe even shout it! This journal is structured for LGBTQ+ youths aged 13–18 years-old. All applicants hold the right to remain anonymous, and don't have to sign their work or pay to apply. "I’m Lola, a Black transfemme living in Nigeria, where my existence is illegal with two decades of jail time. I got kicked out by my parents after I was forcefully outed and am currently in a homeless shelter.

I’ve been harassed multiple times, and recently, I was followed and harassed by four men near the shelter who threatened to kill me and split my head open. My life is in danger, and I’m facing homelessness as the shelter will be shut down by this month’s end. Being homeless as trans woman or transfemme in Nigeria is a death sentence

I’m also dealing with suicidal thoughts from gender dysphoria and a lack of access to HRT.

Periodic reminder that unless a person specifically and clearly tells you it is okay to tell others they are trans or queer, you should err on the side of caution and assume they do not want you to tell people (especially random people!) about their transness or queerness.

You have no idea, generally, why somebody doesn't talk openly about their trans or queer status, and you have no idea, truly, how somebody might react to that information. The most progressive person out there is still capable of harbouring incredibly negative thoughts about somebody's queer status.
