Where actually was this betrayal line for Obito that Kakashi had crossed?

about the whole "anyone got Kakashi, but not Obito" thing that @komihoyinsblog said. I remembered where the culmination of this theme was. no, like, this whole topic is real!

let's talk about the scene after when Jubito was defeated. here I will analyse kkobkk relationships and Obito's arc specifically.

Context

during the battle with the shinobi alliance, Obito came face to face with a deeply repressed desire for another life, which he did not realize due to his position as the only one who can fulfill the tsukuyomi plan. the battle itself as well as the conversation with Naruto reminds Obito of the aspirations and values dear to him that he had to sacrifice. all this has noticeably hit Obito and now he is disarmed and stripped of his armor, which is metaphorically reflected in his half-naked body (and cuz fans love men's boobs).

CH. 652. god, look how happy he is, I'm sobbing. love the way he never regrets about his scars, they're with him even in his imagination, that's a reminder of his core values.

structurally, in Obito's arc, this scene is the Collapse point and the end of the second act. here, the previous methods (the tsukuyomi plan) have shown their inconsistency, and the goal (peace for everyone and for him, too) has not been achieved, and he must find a new way to achieve this goal. at the beginning of the scene, he is confused, defeated and not ready to face the consequences.

why isn't he ready? he's lying there, seemingly resigned. yeah, not exactly. here, he accepted the impending death, and it's even not bad to die by Kakashi's hand to some extent. another question is, is he ready to talk to him, is he ready to accept the defeat and find the strength to continue the journey?

Meaning of the scene

once again, it is important that the battle with the alliance and the conversation with Naruto influenced Obito, but did not convince him. it was Kakashi who did it.

in fact, this conversation with Kakashi is a crucial reason for Obito to return to his ideals. before that, he was in doubt (the second act is a reflection of the character, as if hesitating from one side to the other), and after that he takes the side of the alliance. what did Kakashi say that made Obito come back?

three questions Obito is asking.

how can you be sure that Naruto won't fail on his way, unlike me? [pic 2, above]

why are you so attached to Naruto, what's the difference between him and me? [pic below]

why are you willing to help him (and not me)? [pic below]

they don't talk about different paths here. Kakashi emphasizes that Obito's path is not exactly wrong, so that's not the deal. it's about Obito and Naruto as people, and, more, about Kakashi's opinion on Obito.

finding out why he is not the one whose path Kakashi is ready to defend is essential for Obito. he wants to understand why Naruto (aka Obito's previous self, too) is closer to him, why Kakashi does not support the actual one for whom he grieved so much. why, even recognizing the possible correctness of tsukuyomi, Kakashi refuses to support Obito in this, prefers to go the same way. and also look at how damn emotional he is at this moment, his feelings go from anger to anxiety in a couple of frames. that's what happened when the central conflict "I'm never good enough to be loved" is raised.

Obito's questions are a subconscious appeal to Kakashi — "why don't you choose me? I could make you happy. what's wrong with me again?!" he thinks that the reason Kakashi doesn't take his side is not because of the correctness of his path, but because of Obito himself. subconsciously, he thinks that it's because of Kakashi's personal dislike of this "new" Obito, and he is very afraid of this might be true. just look at his face at the bottom of the page, he's really worried about hearing Kakashi's answer. oh, and it's actually the same meaning as "I thought, maybe you could love me like you used to, even though I'm different" [ Jinx's quote from Arcane, yes, I like to compare these two sometimes ].

what Kakashi says in this situation means "let me help you." Kakashi said he would be ready to help Obito if he let him in, if he allowed him. this is literally the only condition (which is important to mention here) under which Obito did not pass, because of his desire to reject Kakashi's help, believing that he must put his life on tsukuyomi plan and cut off all ties. but this does not mean that he wanted Kakashi to cut off this tie in return.

Obito was an individualist, and he only scoffed or got angry at Kakashi's offer to help/sympathize. now they're in a situation when Obito finally hear that Kakashi said "you've made mistakes, but that's okay. I can be with you, if you need me to, and I'm okay with you continuing your life and reaching peace. I accept you and I believe in you." and I want you to appreciate that this is the tipping point of Obito's arc.

so, that's why Obito changes his way of acting. Kakashi shows that he accepts Obito the way he is, and thus significantly reduces Obito's need to prove his worth through his own hardships and overcoming difficulties. yes, Kakashi had already said similar things before, and it didn't work, but here this line is resolved precisely because of this deep conversation they had.

Where's a mistake and where's a betrayal

oh, maybe Rin's death was a thing Obito considered a betrayal from Kakashi's part? everything's much less trivial. would he offer to help Kakashi if he thought he was a traitor? and well, he offered.

no, look at his face on the bottom right, why would you say that with such a gentle face to someone you consider a traitor? what is it, a genuine smile? so something happened besides that.

the betrayal was that Kakashi preferred his other ties to the connection with Obito. here, betrayal is not about killing Rin, and not about breaking a promise — all these are mistakes that Obito is able to forgive.

all the moments when Obito says something like "you had the opportunity to kill me, but you didn't do it", "you can't deal with me because of guilt?", "still blaming yourself for the broken promises?" - all this is an attempt to increase his own value, to show the importance of Obito for Kakashi. and it's also a projection. Obito says, "you had so many opportunities to kill me, but you..." although he does the same. like, why would he leave Kakashi alive after the kamui battle? intentionally inflict a non-fatal wound on him and leave him in a dimension that only he and Obito have access to? "I don't care if he's alive or dead," but at every opportunity he chose the option "alive", even if it's less profitable for him. my baby loves to deceive himself so much.

all this time, Obito believed that he was striving for their common dream, and therefore the condemnation from Kakashi (there should be a couple more frames from the manga) feels like the most painful blow for him, especially when Kakashi says that Rin would not want it either. before that, Obito had compared himself and Kakashi a couple of times, put them on an equal footing, and after being rejected by him, that's where Obito feels really lonely.

the point of no return was precisely the fact that Kakashi shows with his own words that he does not accept the current Obito and everything he's been striving for years. all this, taken together, he considered a betrayal, as if he's not enough, as if he fucked everything up again.

therefore, their conflict is resolved by the acceptance of one person by another, this is in fact exactly what Obito's heart wanted — to hear that he could be accepted after all that had happened. the same thing happened after his death, when he finally met Rin, by the way.

Could you talk about Aizen"s relationship with Shinji? What he thinks about him? etc

Sure! This ask gave me an itch to reread TBTP because (much to my dismay), I wish we saw Aizen and Shinji interact during TYBW. I hope we see some added content in the anime, but I'm not holding my breath lol.

This is going to be more of a ramble/word dump so I apologize if it's not cohesive!

I'm of the opinion that if there was anyone Aizen wanted to understand him (outside of Urahara), it would have been Shinji. I specifically think about this panel and how interesting it is that Kubo gave Aizen a sad look in his eyes. We don't really see sadness in Aizen, there's only one other scene where I vaguely recall him looking more sad/disappointed (vs him being bored/disappointed).

We know from Shinji's side, he was always wary and somewhat cautious around Aizen. He never trusted him fully and kept him at arms length for everything. On one hand, this leads him to his downfall, but I also read it as Shinji having an immediate gut reaction to not trust Aizen and Shinji could never shake that off. He can be professional with Aizen, but he mentally cannot handle anything beyond that. Something about Aizen felt so fundamentally off to Shinji that he could not get close to him.

So I wonder if this bothered Aizen as well... Aizen is someone who meticulously crafted his persona. He was known to be kind, hardworking and diligent, but something about this persona immediately gave a warning to Shinji.

But I'm not gonna defend Aizen and say he crafted the "perfect" persona - because even he (in a roundabout way) admits he didn't. Even subconscious traits of the "real" Aizen comes through with every interaction Aizen and Shinji would have had with each other, but because of the wall Shinji mentally puts between the two of them, he cannot discern these traits. So while this adds to Aizen's "loneliness complex", it gives him leeway to add in stand-ins with Kyoka Suigetsu. And that's what disappoints Aizen at his core - even his own Captain can't recognize the little things about him.

And this leads me to think that Aizen and Shinji were Lieutenant and Captain for a few centuries at least. We know that at Nanao's graduation from the academy, Aizen was already the Lieutenant of Squad 5:

So yes, Shinji may have had time to "understand" Aizen - but he doesn't. Even at the start of TBTP, Aizen asks Shinji what he's listening to and while Aizen doesn't understand jazz, instead of trying to get to "know" Aizen (even frivously), by asking him "what music do you even listen to then?" he tells him "why did you ask me that then?"

Another thing I noticed is that Aizen (during TBTP) asks a surprising amount of questions (it can be argued though that these are the hypnotized stand-ins asking). He's trying to gain as much knowledge as he can from other people, and Shinji isn't there to answer, or even acknowledge that he's asking questions. It's also "normal" for Aizen to be seen at the library, as Shunsui and the C46 didn't bat an eye at Aizen's alibi. While fundamentally Captain/Lieutenant relationships can really be any sort of dynamic (mentor/mentee, boss and personal assistant), I got the sense that Aizen didn't really "learn" much from Shinji about the ways of Soul Society. Shinji had a tight lip and only shared what needed to be shared likely for work-reasons.

And then there's their shikais! I found it fascinating how both of them have reality-altering shikais. Shinji's shikai being a complete distortion of senses, while Aizen's is subtle manipulation of senses. I don't really have any more to say for that, but I've interpreted this as their way of being honest with people. Shinji's manipulation of senses is very cognizant and deliberate - Shinji is blunt. Aizen's is subtle but traumatizing - you can't trust anything coming from Aizen.

I think though, Shinji's experience with Aizen shaped how he treats his Squad going forward. I have a soft spot for headcanons for how Squad 5 operates post-Aizen's incarceration. Shinji treats Momo much differently than he did with Aizen because he knows what it's like being used and completely victimized by Aizen. There's no point in him being on his guard against someone who was hurt just as badly as he was by Aizen's hand. There is a sense of camaraderie they share in that sense. No one (arguably) "knew" Aizen as much as they did because they worked with him in such close capacity. I'd love to know what lies and truths Aizen shared with them lol.

Sorry again for this ramble, but thank you for this ask! Wish we see/have more Squad 5 content, but alas!

Why there was no sasuke when naruto sasuke & all of the shinobi tried to pull the bijuu out from obito together? Manga on ep/ch 652 i mean this part (look pic)

Note: i also wanna ask another tumblr acc, bcz maybe you'll have different opinion & i already tried to think the answer but nothing came to my mind😭✌

Before I start answering this ask, we need to first understand the way in which this ‘being able to read the other Shinobi’s heart’ thing works. Kishimoto has kind of made this very ambiguous and difficult to understand at times.

We are first introduced to this idea during the VOTE 1 fight. But never really got to see much of this throughout the series. Sasuke and Naruto being the only ones who read each other’s heart completely.

This concept of reading each other’s heart is a bit wobbly because it has never been very explicitly explored in the series. The only times we get to see this happening is only one or two times, and we tend to get very selective snippets of peeking into the concerned Shinobi’s hearts.

For example, the first time in VOTE 1, Sasuke does introduce this concept but we fail to understand anything about it. In fact Sasuke is very illusive when he goes ahead and I quote, says, “You can see what’s in my heart, can’t you, Naruto?” And then we see Naruto’s thoughts, ‘So, in fact it is the truth, you really want to kill me, you are doing it for real. All your thoughts are concentrated on getting rid of me.’

We as audience do understand that some sort of umm... privy to audience, conversation has happened between these two and they can hence read each other’s heart. But then the question arises as to how? Because they are not full fledged Shinobi yet!

And then we get a somewhat clear understanding over here,

We are reminded of the concept once again. But this time with a little bit of more clarity. When Sasuke and Naruto are full fledged Shinobis and they traded blows once again, we are drawn into a separate space, which is most probably an intimate, personal sort of space where two opposing Ninjas could open their hearts to one another.

This entire panel, we are only privy to Naruto’s thoughts. But towards the end when Naruto mentions them being able to read each other, we are again thrown into a loop because,

Naruto goes ahead and commits to some very heavy promises. Which makes us as an audience question, what on earth went on in their ‘mind valley’ (we gonna call it the ‘mind valley’ from now on for easy reference) exchange that Naruto came out so passionate and sure about their deaths. Which once again leaves a huge gap between what was shown (Naruto’s thoughts in the previous few panels) and Sasuke’s lack of any interaction. None of those ‘conversations’ between the two adds up to this conclusion. So, quite a few things privy to us audiences and known only to the two party involved (N & S) had happened in their ‘mind valley’ conversation.

So, once again, we don’t really know how this works.

Naruto and Obito are having one of their ‘mind valley’ moments over here. So we get to see some snippets of both Naruto and Obito point of views.

The above picture, (the one you tagged me with), is through Naruto’s memories(Naruto’s p.o.v). Therefore we can see all the Shinobi surrounding Naruto, the ones whom are important to him (which somehow is the entire Shinobi world) at this point.

But there is no Sasuke in here.

No, it’s no such thing. Kishimoto is everything but careless (at least when it comes to N & S). He is very articulate and sneaky.

Yes, these are the memories of Naruto during the end of VOTE 2 where Sasuke gets to see everything Naruto feels towards him. Over here we see this reference again, the whole Shinobi world being precious to Naruto.

But we also have additions, Kushina and Minato. People closest to Naruto, his mom and dad. Ever wonder why it was only Sasuke who got to see MinaKushi and not Obito.

Then we also have this...

Something tailored only and only for Sasuke. That place beside Naruto, the position which proves Sasuke was the closest to Naruto. It was meant only for Sasuke’s eyes. It also helps that the camera zooms in and the rest of the world fades away, it is only Sasuke and Naruto there (the exclusivity of love).

So from all the above informations, I could only conjecture about certain things.

The ‘mind valley’ thing only works when one Shinobi open up their heart to their enemy Shinobi voluntarily (for obvious reasons). And Shinobis being highly trained individuals, who could mask their thoughts and presence at any given time, can also choose the amount of information they are allowing their enemy Shinobi to view in form of these memories (once again for obvious reasons).

Thus Sasuke being absent from the memories of Naruto when they were being viewed by Obito was a very simple fact. To Naruto, Sasuke is very precious, a part of his life and heart that he is very possessive about. He would not show Sasuke (his vulnerability) to just anyone. Sasuke’s importance and presence in Naruto’s world, his life and heart is meant to be known by only one person, Sasuke himself.

I guess this has to do with others' perception about Naruto and his Comrades (???). And Comrades as in... People who stands and fight with Naruto showing their full support.

"Both the people of the Village and Sasuke betrayed you..."

Here, Obito was questioning about Naruto's purpose for fighting in this war. And he didn't fail to mention about Sasuke's betrayal too. I think this is the extent of his understanding about the bond between Sasuke and Naruto.

Remember he said he would make Sasuke to fight him in the Kage Summit Arc???

He also said, "Naruto is just a pawn to stimulate Sasuke"

So, Obito's perception about their friendship is that Naruto was the one who was willing to chase and save Sasuke whereas Sasuke would not even hesitate to kill Naruto if he needs to.

Perhaps he saw Sasuke as someone who never thought Naruto as his very close friend.... a person who could never stand with Naruto and support him just like other people on the Battlefield.

Isn't it funny???

Obito reflects a part of the Fandom which claims SNS bond is one sided because Sasuke never loved Naruto because he tried to kill him multiple times. So, What Obito saw in that Chakra plane was probably How he assumed the bond between Naruto and Sasuke to be.

And this is the same with Kakashi as well.

In this scene, Kakashi clearly knew that N and S are fighting together. He even wondered about it.... And yet he never put Sasuke's face inside the mini-panels... Whereas Sakura was not even in this Konoha Power Up thing, she was with Tsunade and helping out other shinobis. But she was inserted here as Naruto's 'Friends'..... Again, this is Kakashi's perspective about Naruto's comrades who would stand with him and help him out.

Kakashi knew Sasuke injured Naruto after VoTE1...

"Knowing you... You really gave it your all... Didn't you?"

Well, he already knew that Sasuke was the aggressor in that Hospital Rooftop Fight.... He knew Naruto trained so hard for Sasuke to save him from Orochimaru... He knew Naruto begged infront of Raikage to take back the Execution Order...

But he never knew anything about Sasuke's POV... Well, even we, as Readers, got to know his POV in only Chapter 698...

This doesn't mean that I blame them or anything, It's just that other characters has limited exposure to Sasuke's POV and they draw conclusion on what they had observed so far... To them, Sasuke is someone who is not on Naruto's side. So, that's why in that attached Obito panel, Sasuke was not there because he (as well as Kakashi) are very aware of Naruto's POV.

Hmm... I'm not sure what the conditions are for who showed up "inside" Obito there. But let's say anyone who pulled with the intention to save Obito (and the world) showed up; that'd mean then that of course everyone except Sasuke would show up cuz Sasuke, at that point, didn't really care about saving Obito or the world. He only cared about keeping Naruto alive (so he could fight him after).

Naruto Shippuden Ch. 652, 653 and 654

While the entire Manga is drawn beautifully from start to finish, there is something about these two chapters that just…is different. The expressions are so detailed, so beautiful, and everything is so well executed. The beautiful conversation between Naruto and Obito? One of the strongest conversations in the entire series in my opinion. These two chapters have always been some of my personal favourites honestly.

The end of chapter 654 was a touch more powerful in the anime. Seeing Obito close to crying? His voice actor was honestly incredible there.

My heart broke at seeing him raise his hand, to cover the red moon above him, and whisper Rin’s name.

Honestly, I could think of a few reasons why this would be a case, but it's nothing but a personal thoughts: A) Kishimoto didn't bother, as in, looks like intention was to draw jinchuriki and allied shinobi forces (which sasuke is neither) or he forgot (he tends to do that about things, so could be just whatever)

B) Sasuke would probably (actually) don't care about that 💀 i mean i remember him being involved in the process but i doubt his thoughts were about this - and afterall it IS a naruto who offers hand to obito and i think after they do pull him, doesn't like sasuke rushes to make sure he's not about to do something? like he ain't it doing for the same reason

C) This is, a visual representation of obito's thoughts or like it's both naruto's (and if that's a case, maybe naruto doesn't considers yet for sasuke to be 'back' and being part of this - anime kind of parallels this when sasuke has familiar scene when on the 'other' side he is besides naruto with everybody else, like naruto knows what sasukes intensions, despite thinking warm of sasuke and showing before that he cares, but it's reading too much into this i doubt kishimoto meant something like this in the slightest at least that parallel would be anime only and not doneintentionally by kishimoto as he likes to do) and obito's i guess????? at the moment obito probably would not think about sasuke (at least in the exact current moment, because when they show his dream and thoughts of being hokage, sasuke IS there and present, hell even rin is not there despite if that would be a real scenario, she would be alive)

But to be fair, it IS a 'dream' dimension (same where sasuke and naruto talk, which happens in anime, but not in the manga) and it's has as much consistency as anything else

It's probably bc Sasuke didn't play such an important role until the final fight, where we had a representation of all the people Naruto loved and suddenly Sasuke appeared by his side, too.

At that point in the manga, we didn't know Sasuke's intentions, until the war supposedly ended and he showed himself differently. Sasuke and Obito didn't have a close relationship so I want to think it was out of desinterest and bc Kishimoto didn't want to show much of Sasuke until the end.

Lieutenant Aizen HCs

- Before his eventual professor-ship in calligraphy, I HC him as a teaching assistant at the Soul Academy (which is where many students learn and begin fawning over him)

- He’s quite doting on his squad members, helping them with paperwork, kido practice, etc. which also adds to his “dreamy”, charming persona.

- He knows EVERYTHING and I mean Everything about the seated members in sq5 for nefarious reasons. They perceive this as Aizen being thoughtful, but it’s really just a small piece to know for his bigger plan. Also helps with his eventual promotion to captaincy.

- He’s still learning about the way of the world, both in terms of Soul Society (like the Soul King) and the Living World. If I’m mathing this correctly lol, Turn Back the Pendulum took place in an era where a lot of Revolutions had already happened, so books and historical pieces about those times fascinate him. He eventually starts building his library.

- Tangentially related, while he finds revolutions, political theories, etc interesting, he also doesn’t care for the Living World. He likes some of the intellectual thought that comes from it, but the day-to-day lives of humans? Not worth his time.

- I genuinely HC him to not be super interested in music. Like he doesn’t have a genre he prefers, if he likes it, he likes it, but he doesn’t seek out music (unlike Shinji or Rose).

- Learns about coffee and takes a liking to it! He likes his tea as well (and still prefers it over coffee), but he’s not going to say no to a fresh brew.

NSFW HC

- he’s experimenting with what kinks he likes, but his dominant side is still pretty subdued since he’s still crafting his “kind” persona.

- I can’t see him as someone who sleeps around a lot, because word would spread pretty fast. He’s pretty discreet about it, he may have 1-2 casual partners he sees to scratch that itch (if he has it), or no one at all.

- I would say if he did have casual flings, one of them would have been subject to Dom Aizen, and I don’t think they would be a shinigami, just some plain old soul in Rukongai. It’s a sworn secrecy thing - what happens in that room between them and Aizen, stays in that room. He has a reputation to uphold after all!

Honestly I haven't thought of this much. I just assumed it's because Sasuke wasn't really "on their side" at that point in time. After Obito gets the Tailed Beasts extracted from him and Minato makes his speech about friends or whatever, Naruto does look at Sasuke in a way implying there's still work to do with him so.
