Sir Anthony Hopkins has been pictured for the first time as Sigmund Freud while filming scenes in Ireland.

The two-time Oscars winner, 85, plays the founder of psychoanalysis opposite Downton Abbey star Matthew Goode, 45, who portrays The Chronicles of Narnia author C.S Lewis in the upcoming film Freud's Last Session.

The actors were pictured filming a scene which saw them walk into a church carrying gas masks in their hands, accompanied by about 30 extras on set.

Sir Anthony wore a grey coat, a brown trilby hat and Freud's trademark round-rimmed glasses. Goode donned a navy overcoat and maroon tie.

The Silence of the Lambs star tipped his hat when he noticed the photographer's camera.

The movie, directed by Matthew Brown, is based on Mark St German's 2010 play of the same name and is set just before the Second World War.

The Austrian pioneer invites Lewis, a Christian, to discuss God and faith, with the film delving into Freud's relationship with his daughter Anna, and Lewis' with his best friend's mother.

The film's cast also includes Liv Lisa Fries as Freud's daughter, The Crown star Jodi Balfour, Stephen Campbell Moore, Gosford Park actor Jeremy Northam and Rose Plays Julie star Orla Brady.

In 2021, Sir Anthony said he had no plans to retire, telling Saga magazine that he enjoys working, adding: "I enjoy getting out of the house and doing something different. I enjoy the novelty of it... I love the activity."

He went on: "My wife, Stella, worries about my health and once said, 'Do you want to keep going until you drop dead?' I replied, 'I guess so, unless my health gives out first'. And she said, 'Well, that's good if it's really what you want to do'. And it is. Acting is my passion."

The Father actor came close to retiring in the past, first in 1998, and in 2011, before his role as Odin in Marvel blockbuster Thor.

Hollywood icon Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode have been spotted filming for their upcoming movie Freud’s Last Session.The award-winning actors were seen filming the final scenes of the psychological thriller which explores the relationship between Sigmund Freud, played by the Oscar-winning actor, and author C.S Lewis, portrayed by Goode.It is understood the film will see the pair debate the existence of God during the final years of the doctor’s life on the eve of the Second World War.

Interweaving past, present and fantasy, the film will delve into the unique relationship Freud had with his daughter anna (played by Liv Lisa Fries) and The Chronicles of Narnia author’s relationship with his best friend’s mother.

Anthony Hopkins' look in Freud's Last Session unveiled - FIRST LOOK

Anthony Hopkins is taking on the real-life role of psychiatrist Sigmund Freud in a new drama from Sony Picture. The movie, Freud's Last Session, follows the famed neurologist sitting down with CS Lewis to debate God, faith, and the hidden depths of their lives. Hopkins was pictured in Ireland alongside co-star Matthew Goode, who is playing the aforementioned author.

Hopkins could be seen wearing a thick wool coat as well as Freud's signature round spectacles and trilby hat.

After spotting the photographer, the Hannibal Lecter actor doffed his cap at his audience.

He could be seen alongside Goode, who is taking on the monumental role of Lewis, who is best known for penning The Chronicles of Narnia series.

The pair of British actors could be seen carrying out their scene while walking into a church, while carrying gas masks in their hands.

The upcoming film is based on the 2010 Mark St Germain play of the same name, which has hit stages around the world, including Off Broadway.

The synopsis for Freud's Last Session reads: "On the eve of the Second World War and the end of his life, Sigmund Freud (Hopkins) invites iconic author CS Lewis for a debate over the existence of God. Innovatively, the film explores Freud’s unique relationship with his lesbian daughter Anna, and Lewis’ unconventional romance with his best friend’s mother."

It adds: "Freud’s Last Session interweaves past, present and fantasy, bursting from the confines of Freud’s study on a dynamic journey."

Perhaps the most interesting part of this story is the diametrically opposed views held by the two men.

The above tribute is dedicated to June Beck, founder of Maureen O'Hara Magazine.

Synopsis: "A retired American boxer returns to the village of his birth in 1920s Ireland, where he falls for a spirited redhead whose brother is contemptuous of their union." -IMDB

The Quiet Man (1952) is a film directed by John Ford (How Green Was My Valley) and stars John Wayne (True Grit, The Searchers) and Maureen O'Hara (The Parent Trap, Miracle on 34th Street). This is the second film Wayne and O'Hara starred in together, the first being Rio Grande, which Ford also directed. Wayne and O'Hara had amazing chemistry on screen and made five films together in total, the rest being Wings of Eagles, McLintock!, and Big Jake. The Quiet Man is seen as the more successful of their films, having achieved the Academy Award for Best Cinematography and Best Directing in 1953.

John Wayne & Maureen O'Hara remained great friends until his death in 1979.

The song in the tribute is Into the Mystic by Van Morrison.

Notes: As with most old films, there are some things that may not have aged well, but were considered fine for the time period. One thing is the jokes about beating women who misbehaved with sticks. While no one was actually beat with a stick in the film, it was joked about. O'Hara's character, Mary Kate, was a redhead with a noted fearful temper. It was implied that she needed a good stick whipping to keep her in line, but Wayne's character never did. It was a sign that he had no issues with her being full of fire. The fact that these jokes exist doesn't diminish the fact that this movie is wonderful. I will always highly recommend it.

Fun Fact: At one point during filming, O'Hara hit John Wayne for real after their first big kiss. The punch was scripted, but she didn't pull it. Wayne saw it coming and blocked her punch with his hand. The impact of her fist with his palm caused her wrist to fracture. She literally broke her wrist and kept filming. O'Hara prided herself on being able to keep up with the men. She never let anything they threw at her bring her down. This is one reason why John Ford repeatedly used her in his films and why John Wayne loved working with her.

Matthew GoodE is having too much FUN on the set of FREUD’S LAST SESSION. He’s filming in the same location, Enniskerry, County Wicklow in Ireland, where he and Amy Adams shot LEAP YEAR (2010). Remember Declan and Anna fall asleep on the garden bench while waiting for the bus to Dublin. The shoot in Enniskerry lasted for 2 days (Mar 29 and 30) and some roads (and businesses) were closed off for them. One resident complains about not being able to go to his pub. He jokes about sacrificing himself for art. Haha!

Matthew (C. S. Lewis) has a new scene partner here. Does anyone know who the bearded actor with the scarf is? Meanwhile Anthony Hopkins (Sigmund Freud) had already finished his scenes last week, and is currently filming Peacock TV series THOSE ABOUT TO DIE in Italy.
