His mind once more was meshed in darkness as heaped they high o'er the head beloved a mound of mould and mingled leaves. Light lay the earth on the lonely dead; heavy lay the woe on the heart that lived, and his face and form, not faded ever.

Silmarillion as the Crane Wives pt 2
I’m doing more of this because this band is so good and gives insane Silm vibes.
Turn Out The Lights: Yet another very Feanor coded song. ‘Turn out the lights on your racing mind’ It also works for Curufin and Celebrimbor for similar reasons. It kind of sounds like ADHD or someone having a panic attack so it fits very well.
Queen of Nothing: My girl Idril. ‘Isn’t this what you wanted? Time sure feels like it’s running out.’ She’s probably singing it to Maeglin but maybe also to Turgon if she’s harbouring some anger. ‘Such a heavy crown.’
The Wolf: Celegorm, feral vibes you know?
The Moon Will Sing: I know I did this one last time but I had another thought. The sons of Feanor because he is sort of the sun right? He’s overwhelming, he burns with quite literally more than anyone else, even when he dies everything revolves around the impact he had on everyone around him. It’s his story even when he isn’t there. And the vast majority of his son’s actions in the Silm is directly because of him and the sheer devotion they have to him. They are nothing without their love for their father, it’s who they are the sons of Feanor. ‘Bore the shadows that you made, with no light of my own.’ It’s just really sad. Curufin especially as the one who’s main attribute in everyone’s eyes is being a reflection of him but not as impressive.
The Strangler Fig: Luthien to her father and Celegorm. ‘All you’re doing now is losing me.’
Drown You Out: Beleg and Turin. Beleg’s need to find him and be with him and Turin’s grief. ‘But your song sings in my veins and I’m singing too.’
Here I Am: Elrond’s abandonment issues. This is so perfect for him at literally any point in his life with any meaningful relationship he’s ever had. ‘Here I am, again, the one, that gets left behind!’ He’s literally lost everyone this is his song.
Safe Ship Harboured: Turgon and Orodreth. Yes. It’s them.
Down the River: Fingolfin to Feanor. Does this need elaboration? It’s about the Helcaraxe.
Take Me To War: Galadriel was my first thought. The closest thing to a rival for Feanor. This song is about when she first decided to journey with her brothers and cousins to Middle Earth after a sheltered childhood in Valinor. Because young Galadriel absolutely is angry after Aqualonde and it’s a fairly large part of her motivation as well as a wish to rule.
Can’t Have It All: Nerdanel. It’s perfect for her. ‘You won’t find me where you left me, no I’m long gone.’ She knows how to stand up for herself even to someone she loves.
Ribs: Serious Haleth vibes. Just the entire song. ‘How lucky you are, handed down a shield for your precious parts.’ ‘. ‘The dark doesn’t frighten me, I chose to close my eyes it is mine.’
New Discovery: This song is Finrod and Finrod is this song. He’s the adventurous one, he wants to know everything there is to know about all the creatures and places of the earth. He’s the elf to have the first dealings with the Edain and one of the more amiable dealings with the dwarves.
How To Rest: Kidnap fam. ‘The heart is just a muscle with a rhythm of its own.’ They weren’t expecting or planning to love each other or start seeing each other as a form of family, they’re all traumatised and it’s really complicated, but they end up doing so in a way regardless. Whether any of them wanted it or not.
Easier: Maedhros. I love this song and it fits him pretty well. Because nothing’s ever been easy for him. ‘And if I were not myself would this be easier?’ ‘So I’ll just close my eyes and try to pretend, that it gets easier.’

End of the year fic recs
Thank you so much for tagging me, @curufiin! I am veeery new to fandom and fan spaces, and I started reading silm fic in August, but I have already devoured lots of great stories and I’m eager to share some of my favourites. I read mostly ship fics, so that will reflect on my recs.
Recommend up to 5 series or multi-chapter fics from 2023 that everyone should read (multi-year WIPs count, if the last update was in 2023).
Recommend up to 5 single chapter fics/one-shots (long or short) from 2023 that everyone should read.
Recommend up to 5 fics NOT from 2023 that everyone should read (oldies but goodies).
Recommend up to 5 of your own fics (completed or WIP) from 2023 that everyone should read.
Multi chapter fics:
The Long Road by whyyesindeed, WIP, Mature, Fingon/Maedhros, 26k. I adore the author's previous works, and this one is a chaptered story in progress, an AU where Fingon and Maedhros go to Beleriand 48 years before Finwë’s death. The prose is impeccable.
Half-brother in blood, full lover in heart by @ettelene, WIP, Mature, Fëanor/Fingolfin, almost 200k. This is my favourite Feanolo, with lovely writing and compelling plot. The chemistry between the leads is sizzling and I hope that in this AU there will be a happy(/ier) ending.
Moonlight In His Cave by @cuarthol, WIP, Mature, Curufin/Finrod, 15k. Canon compliant Curufinrod, I don't need to say anything more. I cannot wait to read more; the prose is absolutely gorgeous and I LOVE how the familial relationships are portrayed so far.
Curufinwë Atarinkë’s Journal by @curufiin, WIP, Teen and Up, minor Curufin/Finrod, 9k. This one made me love Curufin so much and understand more of his mind, it's crack treated seriously and it goes from baby Curufin scribbling in his journal, to adult kinslayer bearing a horrible burden. I read this three times and each time, I love it more.
Know Thyself by LiveOakWithMoss, completed, Teen and Up, multiple relationships, 9k. Absolutely hilarious, couldn't stop grinning: First Age Feanorians are magically transported into the modern world and meet their human counterparts. Chaos ensues (Maglor duet contest, selfcest, Maedhros is elected Assistant Manager in a mall shop, some interdimensional threesomes). I adore every word.
One shots:
Mirror Image by @swanhild, Gen, various familial relationships, 4,5k. A few fluffy moments between the Feanorians and the Arafinweans, with Feanor and Arafinwe watching. It's endearing and heartwarming with some ominous foreshadowing. It made me cry.
Mapmaking by am_fae, Explicit, Maedhros/Maglor, 3k. Super funny and clever with lots of puns, and a steamy sex scene. Lots of sexy geography talk.
The dining room by @ettelene, Teen and Up, various familial relationships, 9k. A peek into the cooking preparations and subsequent dinner at the Feanorians' house. With a larger cast, lots of witty dialogue, a Huan cameo and underlying tension, this is a splendid read with great characterisation.
Of doves, letters and darker things by @elevenelvenswords, Explicit, Curufin/Finrod, 3,5k. Super atmospheric, a glimpse into the complex power games between the cousins that ends up in hot throne sex.
Oldies:
Outlast the Forests by daphnerunning, 2021, completed, Explicit, Beleg/Turin, 68k. If I could convince any silm fan to read a fic, THIS WOULD BE IT. It's my TOP favourite longfic, canon compliant, slow burn, mortal/immortal. It's based off of Children of Hurin, rife with tragedy, heartwrenching, incredibly loving and ladden with longing. I read it four times and I still think about it on a weekly basis. This is canon to me, it gives alllll the doomed feelings. I don't even need to read other Turleg fics, this is perfection.
And All Our Wounds Forgiven by Marchwriter, 2012, completed, Mature, Curufin/Finrod, 9k. The writing style is fantastic, tolkienesque, the atmosphere the writer has created is unparalelled, like a fairytale, but infused with tension. One of the first Curufinrod pieces on ao3 and a MUST READ for fans of this pairing. I cannot stress enough how beautiful the prose is.
Those Who Favor Fire by @clothonono, 2022, completed, Mature, Fingon/Maedhros, 41k. The author is already one of my favourites on Russingon, but I love this fic in particular because of Maedhros' portrayal post-Thangorodrim, as it fits in line with my headcanons. It also explores the morality of the first kinslaying and Fingon's attempt at justifying himself. It ends with a gut-punching line.
your shadow at morning, rising to meet you by crownlessliestheking, 2021, completed, Explicit, Feanor/Fingolfin, 5k. Fingolfin goes to Formenos to talk sense into his brother. Excellent characterisation and I specifically liked the dialogue.
Correspondingly so by LiveOakWithMoss, 2016, completed, Teen and Up, Curufin/Finrod, 2k. Notes and letters that are funny and witty as hell and full of subtext. I love ALL of LiveOak's Curufinrod pieces, but this was one of the first ones that I read and I remember snickering so much. Another one I reread multiple times and it has in fact inspired one of my fics too.
Mine:
Fëanor posts on r/amitheasshole, Teen and Up, various relationships, 4k. Pure crack. I laugh every time I reread this and I had a ton of fun writing it, I recommend it for when you want some shits and giggles.
Immortal Longings, Mature, Curufin/Finrod, 5k. Epistolary and humorous, written for a 'sexy letters' prompt. Falcon shenanigans, banter, mentions of steamy scenes and golden lingerie that ends up being treated by historians as valuable artefacts from an ancient age. It ends up in tragedy but I am very proud of this one.
Give me shelter, the night is dark, Mature, Curufin/Finrod, 5k. I consider this my best written fic, prose-wise, and I am very pleased with the dialogue (I adore writing Curufinrod dialogue). The premise of it is basically 'Curufin does drugs and Finrod does Curufin.'
This took way longer than expected! I truly believe I have not read ONE badly-written silm fic, and it was quite difficult to choose from many well-loved works. Tagging all authors mentioned here, if you'd like to join.

Absolutely no one in the world requested this, but as a Tight Two Thousand gift to everyone who follows me (whether they want it or not) I decided the following post by @tolkien-feels deserves its own fic.
Tumblr media
(some mildly risque humor in this, just as a warning)
"Never has my assigned mortal ever... changed her name," said Aegnor.
Beleg grimaced at his half-empty wineglass. "Do I need to drink for each name change, or only once?"
"After all the years you spent looking after Turin, I believe you can drink as much as you like," Luthien replied, taking two ladylike sips from her own glass. "Sometimes I do wish Turin and I had overlapped in our time in Doriath... and yet perhaps it's better for all of Arda that we didn't. Who is next?"
"I'll have a go," said Beleg. "Never has my assigned mortal ever had a conflict with my family."
Luthien, with a deep sigh, drained her glass. Next to her, Idril took a cautious swig--her husband's duel with her cousin counted, surely?--while Aegnor refilled his wine to the brim and drank deeply.
"If you and Beren had managed your little romance a few centuries earlier, Finrod would never have been so gloomy about the whole situation," he told Luthien irritably. "Highly unfair, if you ask me."
"I do not control the speed at which mortals reproduce, darling," said Luthien, not noticeably perturbed. "Idril, go on, you haven't had a turn yet."
Idril, by far the most sober of the group, smirked. "Never has my assigned mortal ever died."
There was a collective groan from the rest of the group, followed by a long moment of silent drinking.
"What a very low blow that was, Idril dear," said Luthien. "Not all of us can have the Lord of Waters granting our every wish! Look at your poor cousin Aegnor, he's about to cry."
"I am not crying," Aegnor retorted, before proceeding to blow his nose loudly into a handkerchief. "Only you needn't be so smug about it, Idril. When I think of how few years Andreth and I had together..." He sniffed and wiped roughly at his eyes. "I know everything is sorted now, of course, but still."
"Poor Aegnor! Never fear, I know precisely how avenge all of us." Luthien's eyes narrowed, and she grinned wickedly. "Never has my assigned mortal ever... shared me with his best friend."
There was a brief, awkward pause. Then--to the shock of everyone except Luthien--Idril quietly drank.
"You what?" Aegnor exclaimed. "My goodness, how does that work?"
"I will not be giving any details, thank you," Idril said primly. "That is my business alone."
"You should see those three together, boys, it's so sweet as to be disgusting," Luthien chimed in. "Anyway, I firmly believe we will get Idril properly drunk one of these days. Cheers!"

Why I think beleg and turin being a canon couple is conjecture
1. The word "tryst" used
The more commonly know meaning of tryst is a secret meeting between lovers which does cause confusion when reading into their relationship but people ignore the second meaning of tryst either deliberately or out of ignorance.
The second meaning being "an appointed meeting or meeting place" which makes more sense. If the context was romantic it would make no sense why androg would be jealous.
2. Kissing beleg
We must first take in mind their relationship from start. Turin had seen beleg since childhood. He was closest to what turn can call an older brother or father figure who also later became his dearest friend. I saw the kiss at the time of death as purely platonic. Like a child kissing their parent/ or a brother kissing his dead brother
Even as friends it would make sense, turin is in extreme anguish he has just killed the only person he has been close to since childhood. Probably his mentor aswell. Hence he kisses his corpse as a last goodbye.
It baffles me that people view this as a sign that he was sexually and romantically attracted to beleg.
Some also argue that he gave his open mouth a kiss that is why it must be romantic in nature, as if a corpse is in any position to close it's mouth.
3. Tolkien's own view of friendship.
A common theme in all of Tolkien's work is extremely close and intense bond of friendship and brotherhood between men. This makes sense as he himself served in army during times of war. Soldiers develop intense and close friendships as they go through extremely traumatic times. Tolkien wrote these friendships based on actual bonds of friendship he had seen while in the army.
Even the friendship of Sam and frodo which is constantly under scrutiny was based on relationship between a Batman and the officer he was serving.
Carpenter’s Biography quotes Tolkien as saying, “My ‘Sam Gamgee’ is indeed a reflexion of the English soldier, of the privates and batmen I knew in the 1914 war, and recognized as so far superior to myself.” A batman, in military parlance, was a soldier who (as well as being required to fight) was tasked with looking after an officer’s kit, cooking, and cleaning. Tolkien’s phrasing in the letter sent to Minchin is different, and very interesting too: “My ‘Samwise’ is indeed (as you note) largely a reflexion of the English soldier—grafted on the village-boys of early days, the memory of the privates and my batmen that I knew in the 1914 War, and recognized as so far superior to myself"
As someone who had family members serve in army and have Batman as their servers I can attest to their incredible loyalty.
4. Projection from people.
Tolkien was a firm christian. Even though he had a student who wrote queer stories and read them I doubt he would include homosexuality in his works. He hated narnia for the way C.S lewis wrote allegory and christian allegory in this story.
His firm believes are clearly reflected in his stories.
All his elves are built upon the image of good christian. They can only marry (romantic involvement) the opposite sex (no homosexuality). They can't have sex outside of marriage. Their sexual desires fade away after having children.
By this default beleg is definitely straight and turin is as well ( as he fell in love with nienor and if he was bisexual over the course of his whole journey he would have fallen in love with a man since he had more companion who were male and it would make sense but he didn't and only fall in love with a women and got her pregnant.)
They reason why fans especially western fans feel so confused at the immense platonic love between his characters is because their society is hyper sexual. Any form of deep affection especially between same genders must be seen as sexual/romantic.
As someone that isn't from the west and has seen such deep relationships between the same-sex, no these characters aren't sexually repressed or secret lovers. They love each other very much, just platonically that is all.
Another kind of audience is one that projects their own views over the actual text. These have either read too gay themed stories or are gay themselves. I would say take your personal bias away and see these texts in light of what tolkiens mindset was.
Extra: same issue with fingon and maedhros who are also family. I have seen so many close friendships and extreme bonds of platonic love between cousins who have also saved each other from life threatening situations and have never thought wow they must be secret lovers 🤦
Note: one more point is to note that platonic love is of greater scale in professor Tolkien's work than romantic love in most scenarios. Also elves formed great platonic friendships.
*A point written by someone in reddit
"Elf-friend" status isn't something that an Elf can award to a favored mortal, and that all Elves somehow recognize once one Elf has conferred it. Being an "elf-friend" is a psychological and spiritual state that some mortals attain, and once they do all Elves (and creatures of similar spiritual discernment) are able to recognize it.
In fact, being an "elf-friend" is a sign that a given mortal is in tune with the way Arda was supposed to be from the beginning. The estrangement of Elves and mortals only came about because of the Marring of Arda by Melkor. Had that not happened, all mortals would have had the benefit of living with and conversing with Elves, who would have been their helpers and teachers. That would have left a clear mark upon them - longer life, clearer intelligence, deeper spiritual existence - just as it did upon those few mortals who got the opportunity despite the Marring
It seems friendships between mortals and elves are very spiritual in nature. And beleg does provide guidance and counsel to turin almost akin to a spiritual guide and friend/parental figure.

Hi, I wanted to ask if I could use the poses in the photos in your cosplay post for a drawing reference (…full disclosure I had initially saved them to my camera roll to remind me, and then one of those “the last fictional character in your camera roll is now your roommate” posts came up and suddenly Beleg and Turin were my roommates in this alternate universe. I feel like my own hubris in not asking first betrayed me.)
Oh absolutely you may!  I’m flattered that you want to draw it, haha.  Good luck with those roommates though.  Try not to die.
Tumblr media
(For the record, I’m currently fine with people taking inspiration and/or reference from any art or photos of mine on this blog, since I haven’t had any bad experiences with that so far.  And I’d love to see the results if you're willing to tag me!)

Mistletoes
Tumblr media
Beleg x reader
(Sorry that this is a bit late. Thanks for my friend for helping with fixes.)
Requested by anonymous
You have been trying to confess your love for ages, but nothing seems to work. Who thought it would only take one human boy and a yule tradition to get your feelings finally through your dense crush.
Warnings: some obvious pining, crushing, hopeless romance, mischievous Turin and finally getting caught under the mistletoe.
-----------------------------------------------------------
You and Beleg had been close since you were little elflings. You grew up together, played together, and became march wardens together. You were like two inseparable branches of the same tree, always together. You grew to know him in and out like he knew you, but for some reason, you have failed to confess your long-time feelings for him.
It was frustrating. Beleg was one of the smartest ellons you knew, yet somehow he constantly missed the signs and hints that you were interested in him. No matter how obvious it was.
You were one step away from writing it down for him.
You even tried to be straightforward and tell him you were hopelessly in love with him, yet somehow people always need him for something, and he forgot to ask about it even when he promised to hear what you had to say.
He didn’t get the hints, and people always needed him when you tried to confess. You even tried to employ princess Luthien’s help since she used to be your good friend, and even that ended up in embarrassment, with your confession left unsaid.
It continued for so long that you knew no other way to have your feelings crossed. You couldn't do anything but watch him from a distance, like a wallflower and imagine the life you could have if Beleg truly knew about your feelings.
You had hoped you would eventually get there, even though Beleg’s obliviousness drove you mad and made you want to push him to the wall and kiss him like crazy at times. Anything just to get it finally done.
You had a plan in mind when yuletide finally came, but after failing so many times, you could not help but constantly feel anxious about all the possible things that could go wrong and the dreaded possibility of your feelings left unsaid once again.
You were now thinking about how you would confess while packing for a trip with Turin. The young boy was eager for your trip to the forest, so he ensured he had everything in his bag while you were thinking about your complicated love life.
Your feet were tapping the ground as your thoughts wandered, thinking and thinking while the young human boy checked on his things. You were already done with the packing, so there was nothing you could do except wait for a certain elf to arrive.
Turin glanced at you and watched as you were deep in your clouds of thoughts. “What's on your mind today?” He asked, breaking your focus from your thoughts.
“Huh, nothing much. Why do you ask?” You asked.
“You have a brooding expression on your face. That’s when you’re thinking something sad and angry,” Turin explained while twiddling with his thumbs in a very adorable fashion.
You kneeled down to his height to look him in the eye. “Oh, I’m sorry. I promise you I wasn’t thinking anything bad about you or anyone. It’s just –” You hissed, sensing the gleaming curiosity in the edain child’s eyes. “It’s about Beleg. You know I have been trying to confess my feelings for him, right?” You asked to which Turin fervently nodded. You almost scoffed. This proved your efforts even a child could see, let alone a human child. How could Beleg be so dense.
“Nothing I do gets his attention, and he doesn’t get it even if I try to scream it to his face,” You explained. “Have you tried just telling him that you love him?” The little boy asked. “I have, but then people always need him for something before I get the chance,” You tried not to whine in front of a child younger than you by a couple of centuries. “I never have the chance to tell him,” You said, barely maintaining any semblance of your composure.
“How about you tell him now when he comes back?” Turin asked. “I could, but what if someone suddenly comes and takes him away for something?” You questioned. “I could keep a watch so that no one will disturb you,” He offered with a smile.
“That’s really sweet of you,” You resisted the urge to coo at him. By Eru, this edain is out for your heart. “But… I don’t think It would be that easy,” You sighed, dropping your shoulders at the thought.
“There you are! I have been looking for you two,” Beleg’s voice caught your attention. Your heart raced when you saw the silver-haired ellon march toward you. His smile and confidence making you weak from the inside.
“Ready to depart? I heard Daeron had composed a new winter song, so we might want to leave soon, or we might get forced to see him perform,” He chuckled. “Do it now!” Turin pushed you toward him. You were surprised for a moment before turning your attention toward Beleg. Guess you were doing it.
“Beleg. Can I say something because I do not think I have a chance to say it later?” You questioned. “Sure. What is it, my dear friend?” Beleg smiled at you.
“Do you –” You started, thinking your words carefully. “I mean – I’ve been meaning to tell you that I –” You fumbled, your heart racing as you were about to say it. Was this it? Were you finally going to tell him?
“Beleg!” Someone suddenly shouted, making you jump with fright.
“Beleg! Are you and (Name) going to join the yule’s celebration later?” They appeared, taking Beleg’s attention away from you.
You whined as you knew where this was going.
“Sure! We’re just going to take a quick trip to the northern woods and come back,” Beleg answered.
“Great. Oh, and before you go. Mablung has been asking for your assistance, so please attend to him first?” The Eru foresaken elf asked.
“Sure! I’m sorry, you two. You know how Mablung can get, so please wait for me for a moment,” Beleg uttered a quick apology and left.
“But!” You tried to say.
“I won’t be long, and I promise to hear what you have to say later,” He called out before disappearing to do whatever Mablung wanted from him.
You sighed, knowing he would forget about it anyway.
Turin stood beside you after watching the whole thing. “I see what you mean when you said you never get the chance,” Turin stated.
“Turin. Have you ever met someone so stupid that it’s kinda endearing?” You asked with defeat in your voice. “I don’t know. My father and lord Thingol probably check those boxes,” Turin said, making you groan.
When Beleg returned, you three went on that trip like planned. You said nothing during the whole thing, and Turin silently observed you and Beleg. You weren’t even trying to confess your feelings again, so the little boy got an idea.
“Hey, do you know about the mistletoe tradition?” Turin asked, gaining your and Beleg’s attention. “I – do not think I have. What is this tradition you speak of, Turin?” Beleg asked with curiosity in his eyes.
“It’s a tradition where you hang a mistletoe and whoever walks under it has to kiss the one who gets trapped under it with them,” Turin explained. “I’ve seen my father doing it a couple of times with my mother,” He continued without missing a beat. “Though, my mother rolled her eyes most of the time and left anyway,” He added.
"Hmm, what an interesting tradition," Beleg smiled. "I could see partners doing it to catch a kiss from each other," He said, seemingly lost in thought. "That would be sweet," You said, dreaming about kissing him.
After the trip into the woods and giving Turin a lesson, you thought about the whole mistletoe thing and couldn't help but imagine finally kissing him and confessing your feelings. It had potential, but you were too afraid of failing to consider trying it.
Luckily for you, Turin got you covered on the plan.
You were casually talking with Beleg, unaware Turin was waiting in the other room with a bow in his hand, and when you walked through the door, he shot his arrow above you.
You were startled when you heard something fly and hit above you. You and Beleg looked up and saw the arrow struck in the wall with an odd plant hanging from it.
"What is that?" You questioned. "A mistletoe?" Beleg said in a questioning tone, then Turin appeared.
"Now that you both got caught under the mistletoe. By the rules of the tradition, you're not allowed to leave till you share a kiss," Turin explained with a smirk. At that moment, you realized he had been planning this since he told you about the tradition with the mistletoe.
You were impressed but still left embarrassed.
"Bye then, have fun!" Turin then left, making you silently panic. The little human boy then left you alone with the silver-haired ellon.
"Well –" Beleg chuckled. "I did not expect this," He smiled at you as he found the whole thing amusing. You smiled and nodded awkwardly, not knowing what to do or say.
"Well, what do you say, (Name)? I think it would be rude not to follow the rules," Beleg said. "Yeah, and he didn't specify where you had to kiss. So to make this less awkward. How about just a kiss on the cheek?" You suggested.
"Sounds good enough," Beleg shrugged his shoulders. You let out a sigh of relief, then held on to his shoulder to lean in to kiss him on the cheek. You were close so kissing him on the cheek wasn’t a problem.
However, Beleg hummed and had a different thought. "On second thought–" He said, making you stop and look at him confused. You did not expect him to turn around, grab you by the face, and push his lips against yours.
You yelped, and your face burned, but when Beleg tenderly hugged you closer. You melted and wrapped your arms around his neck.
You were screaming happily from the inside as butterflies flew frantically inside your stomach.
You almost gasped when you stopped to take a breather. You looked at Beleg as he looked back at you with fondness in his eyes. "Since we're here, do you mind If I ask you to court me?" He asked with a smile.
Your heart fluttered as you had waited to hear those words for ages.
"I would love to be courted by you since I have been trying to tell you that this whole time," You said.
"I know, and I'm sorry," Beleg replied with a light pink dusting his cheeks.
"Wait? What?" Your eyes widened. "You knew?!" You questioned. "I did, and I have been waiting for the chance to confess," He admitted. At that moment, you found yourself lost for words and ended up spluttering like a fool.
"You're horrible! If you knew, why did you always forgot to come back to me and let me confess?" You swatted his shoulder in mock anger that was very much backed up by embarrassment
"Wait! I have?" Beleg asked, confused.
"Yes! You always forgot!" You almost yelled at him with your hands up.
"Oh, I'm sorry," He said, dropping his ears like a sad puppy.
"Oh, by the Valar," You shook your head and hugged him, making him laugh and hug you back. You made a mental note to thank the little human boy, who was watching from the corner with a smirk. There was no doubt he was dancing in victory in his mind. You have only one thing to say.
You loved human traditions.

for the prompts, if you are willing: Turin and Beleg and "the shadows grew long in the forest"
thank you for the prompt!!! i didn't expect to get one which is why this took me a while, but i hope it doesn't disappoint. (link to silmarillion prompts post)
---
túrin stood just inside the treeline, where the slender birch trunks rose from the forest floor to reach towards the stars. he did not lean on one of them, as he might’ve when he was younger; instead his back was straight, gaze fixed westward. beleg wondered if he thought to pierce the girdle of melian with sight alone, to once again behold the home he’d left.
“the king truly does miss you,” the elf says softly, his steps soundless as he approaches his friend. “surely you miss him as well?” beleg had known túrin for most of the man’s life - how like a drop in a vast river that time feels to him, though no less precious for it - and knows his mind better than most. he watched him grow from recalcitrant child to restless teen to… well, there were too many words to describe his friend as an adult. bull-headed might be one of them. he had wondered how much of túrin’s refusal in the hidden halls of amon rûdh had been due to the fact of their audience, his gathered outlaws. so here, he hoped, the mask might fall.
the man didn’t respond, for so long that any other might think the question had gone unheard, but beleg knew better. and in his own time, túrin responded, “i did, once. when first i fled and still roamed the forest on my own, oft i would find my thoughts straying back to menegroth. i would wonder if there might be a chance to explain my actions, or if i would even be heard out. i remembered the warm meals around the table, when my belly would growl with hunger. and many times did i find myself recalling king thingol’s wisdom when talking with strangers, or your teachings as i hunted for my next meal.” he shook his head, finally turning to look at his friend. “but it faded, beleg. truth be told, i hadn’t thought of the king or menegroth for over a year when you arrived.”
his hand clenched, the only outward sign of túrin’s internal struggle. how could he forget? thingol, who had taken him in as a child and raised him as his own son. his heart ached to remember the peace he’d felt in his younger years, tinged with the grief of leaving his mother - but that too had faded, hadn’t it? was that all his life was? a series of connections, forgotten as soon as he was separated from them for long enough. even now, he wasn’t sure if he could pick his mother out of a crowd. and even beleg…
túrin looked up, and found the question he expected shining as a star in his friend’s eye. “yes, beleg,” he murmured, looking away in shame. “even you.” i forgot the shine of sunlight in your hair, he thought, daring not to betray his own heart even now. i forgot the way the muscles of your back shifted as you bent a bow; forgot the way your smile lifted my heart.
beleg was also quiet, the sun starting to set and painting the trees and his hair with golden-red light. it stung to know he had been forgotten, in the time that túrin was gone, but it wasn’t entirely unexpected. he’d been the one to bear witness as a freshly fifteen-summers túrin tore himself apart for forgetting the paths he’d walked as a young child, the sound of his mother’s voice, his father’s presence. he’d wondered then if the tendency to forget after so short a period of time was simply a part of being adan; now he believed it simply to be some unique characteristic of túrin specifically.
“i understand,” he said at last, closing the distance between himself and his friend to place a hand upon his arm. “i did not come here to force you to return, for i know your mind rebels at demands. the king wished you to know that you are welcome home, and now you do.” túrin looked at him, brows raised slightly with surprise at being so understood; beleg placed a hand at the nape of túrin’s neck to bring their foreheads together. “be well, aa'menealle nauva calen ar' malta.”
túrin’s eyes closed at the farewell, and though he leaned forward to meet the pressing of skin to skin, he was still as beleg pulled away and began to make his way westward. the shadows grew long in the forest when he opened his eyes again, watching the wind blow through the trees and ruffle the elf’s cloak. “cormamin niuve tenna' ta elea lle au'.” túrin spoke the words quietly, and the leaves caught them to make them silent.

MAEGLIN AND AREDHEL IN DORIATH PLEASE
Okay - this one is a little wild so forgive me. I don't spend a lot of time thinking about it, lest I snap and start writing it. [Not Written Yet Fics]
So this came to me when I was thinking about how Eol is a kinsman of Thingol and how Thingol does seem to have a soft spot for children in need.
I will warn you before going on that this does feature more nuanced headcanons about Eol than are widely popular in the fandom. If you would rather not read that - I don't blame you. My reading is based on the idea that the Silm narrative was written by Pengolodh and he's ... not unbiased given the Fall of Gondolin.
The only abuse here is restricting people's freedom to leave Nan Elmoth. Aredhel and Eol married each other without any form of coercion on his part (but they are in a freaky magic forest that likes to play matchmaker). It was way too hasty - they had a kid to try to save the marriage and we all know that doesn't end well. It was just a bad match. They wanted different things out of life and over time, Eol subtly got worse and worse about his terror of the outside world. His insistence that they do not leave because it is not safe. People are out to get them et cetera.
I feel like that needed saying before I go on - or the rest might not make sense.
So Aredhel and Maeglin go to Doriath because at some point in their marriage Aredhel told Eol enough about Gondolin that he figured out its location.
She worries that if they fled that way, he'd find them and bring them back.
Maeglin is still not fully grown. He doesn't have great fondness for sunlight either.
He's a little scrawny and pale and he's never played with other children - but after a rocky patch, he does find a niche with the rest of the Doriathrim.
He is a bit disappointed that he doesn't get to see the famed city of Gondolin (or at least, as famous as it is in his little mind) and "Uncle" Thingol does not seem as cool as the Uncle Turgon he was promised, but he does dote on the boy.
He still makes friends with the dwarves. His father taught him to respect them and although he doesn't completely understand everything his father did - that doesn't seem like a bad thing
Aredhel has a more difficult adjustment. She's a Noldo and she's on thin ice for her family's role in the kinslaying. It's fair to say she's tolerated rather than embraced.
Kinship rites among the Sindar dictate that she be treated like the King's "niece" - but it's very strained.
Meanwhile in Gondolin, Eol is captured trying to enter the valley and put to stern questioning. When they learn of the way he kept Aredhel from leaving, he's thrown into a prison cell.
(he receives a court order for mandatory counseling, since he doesn't seem to get what he did wrong)
A short while later, Galadriel returns and her presence eases some of that tension. Her close relationship with Melian sheds some light on the whole Nan Elmoth situation.
Aredhel learns of the ancient magic there that draws people together - often in ways that even Melian does not understand.
Maeglin grows up. Aredhel dons hunting leathers for the first time in many years and walks in the forest with Beleg and Mablung and Nellas. For a time, they are all content
Then disaster child Turin turns up and Maeglin feels a strange kind of kinship with the boy. He aids him how he can, even giving him a weapon he forged. (when has that ever gone wrong?)
Maeglin gets a front row seat to a "there but for the grace of the Valar go I" situation when everything with Turin goes south.
We check in on Eol - he's ... better. Taking him out of Nan Elmoth seems to have cleared his mind a bit. He still doesn't like the Noldor, doubly so since they're holding him in Gondolin, but he's earned his way out of prison. (He's still closely watched - out on parole)
Then the -uh-Nauglamír situation happens and Maeglin leaves without fighting anyone - dwarf or elf. That won't right the situation with the Silmaril and it won't bring Thingol back.
Aredhel is loathe to leave the marchwardens to deal with this - but Maeglin is still her kid, so she chooses to go with him - but it's a difficult decision.
That's about as far as I've gotten. I do think there's some kind of reunion (Maeglin and Aredhel with Eol) but I don't see them being a big happy family so much as people who have ties to each other and who are trying to sort through what went wrong years ago.
I think it ends on a hopeful note. Not everything is forgiven. Nothing is forgotten, but maybe they can coexist.
Like I said, it's messy (partially because it's a little autobiographical in places, there's a reason I feel so badly for Maeglin) - but I think about it from time to time.

I'd like Russingon so much more if people weren't annoying about it. Like, it's genuinely interesting as an epic friendship chivalric bond type relationship, and I like both characters, the dynamic between them and how it affects the text, but, to me that's so much more interesting than 'oh, of course we were secretly married the whole time, undeniable canon ship', like, it's so irritating and it lacks depth and also? They're not canon. I completely understand people who do want a major queer relationship, but. It's not canon. If anything, the relationship Tolkein maybe consciously wrote as intentionally homoerotic is Turin and Beleg. And at this point I'd genuinely be more interested in something that approaches Maedhros as Fingon as having a platonic relationship based around the chivalric narratives I'm pretty sure Tolkein was inspired by. And I hate the take that if you don't ship russingon you're automatically homophobic.
Also I'm so agreed on the Eol thing, like, yeah, that story has some pretty hideous racist subtext and I get people wanting to change it but idk why they always do it by a) making Aredhel 100% in love and happy with a man who refused to let her leave his house and who later killed her by trying to kill their son OR b) slutshames and villanises Aredhel, usually by portraying her as an abuser (sometimes having the gall to call it feminist and empowering like. If you think a woman being a rapist us empowering you need serious help) And I'm also not sure why she gets called the slutty cousin when one of the first things we know about her is 'she gave her hearts love to none', and when she did get married she was at least partially coerced into it? Like, aside from how horrible slut shaming random female characters is, Aredhel seems like the least likely candidate? She and Celegorm are always so mischaracterised, one thing I really hate about fandom is how it seems to have this set of archetypes it shoves characters into even if that's not how they are in text, to make them more palleatable and understandable I guess? Like, Celegorm was probably a bit on the wild side, but we know he's a linguist and an orator and a skilled commander who actually seems to have taken the initiative in the Nargothrond coup, like? He's always made into a dumb jock and Curufin's always so bitter and bitchy and neither of those seem particularly accurate to how they are in canon? (Also have to agree on the Celegorm/Curufin side, I've read some good fic)
I think one of the biggest problems in the Silm fandom is a) people whitewashing their faves and picking sides in a way that seems really unconscious of how the text emphasises that this is about complex people with incompatible goals and b) people always wanting their ships to be canon to the extent that they end up putting them as the focus of the story, and twisting the text to try and validate them which like? I like a fun ship as much as the next person, but something's aren't canon and that's literally fine? Like, I'm really into Melkor and Sauron as characters, and I do really enjoy Angbang as a ship, but the amount of people who claim they were 'literally married' when we don't have any textual indication for their relationship other than one-sided fanatical devotion on Sauron's part and a level of trust and respect on Morgoth's, is seriously annoying.
Sorry I've been ranting please feel free to ignore this
sorry for taking so long to respond, work was crazy today! but i completely agree with a lot of this, thanks for sharing!!
i think the question of whether or not there’s a “canon queer ship” in the silm is dubious for a bunch of reasons, but i totally agree, if anything it’s turleg! it just doesn’t make sense for tolkien to have explicitly condemned cousin marriages between elves but also to have intended russingon to be read romantically. of course, you don’t have to stick to tolkien’s intent in your hcs LOL- that’s why fanon exists- but his intent does shape what is canon and what isn’t, and he was writing and living in a different time. which is why the argument that anyone who doesn’t ship russingon is homophobic annoys me lol. and even if russingon WAS canon, it wouldn’t be homophobic not to ship it, that’s not how that works lol.
AGREED re: aredhel and eol! i am really not a fan of any analysis of them that somehow tries to spin it around so aredhel was the abusive one. of course, to each their own, but i don’t personally see anything progressive about that and also don’t feel it’s a compelling read of canon. the thing that i think some people don’t get about aredhel is that she can be the victim in an abusive relationship AND a strong woman and an important character beyond that abuse. those things can coexist, and they do. aredhel was groundbreaking! she (and galadriel, i think?) were the only women who survived the helcaraxe! aredhel was the only woman involved at alqualonde! she’s the only female hunter in tolkien’s works! she’s so much more than just some vessel for birthing maeglin and then dying, ugh. even though she didn’t survive the horrible situation she was put in with eol, doesn’t mean she was weak or irrelevant and also doesn’t mean that the only “progressive” interpretation of her needs to be that she was in the wrong somehow.
re: the idea that celegorm is dumb… YES! people forget that he’s canonically a great public speaker, and i think he might’ve had the best “people skills” out of his brothers- remember, he singlehandedly stirred everyone up for the second kinslaying (for better or for worse lol). and he knew more about the forest and about animals and nature than pretty much anyone else due to his training with orome, and the fact that he could understand/maybe speak to animals shows he had linguistic skills that went WAY beyond most other elves.
and curufin… one curufin moment that the fandom seems to collectively ignore, but that i LOVE and that seems really at odds with his characterization as a cunning scheming bitch, is the moment where he runs into eol in pursuit of aredhel and confronts him, telling him off for having forced her into marriage and basically telling him to get the heck out of himlad. he clearly cared a lot about his cousin! he clearly does have morals LOL!

Headcanons on Oropher in Doriath? Like how high ranking do you think he was there? Also the dynamics he had with Thingol, Melian, Mablung, Beleg, Saeros, Daeron, Beren, Luthien, Turin and Dior? (I know it's much but I'm a curious fellow, don't mean to overwork you or anything)
Anon I know this is so late I’m so sorry! I hope this is ok! I don’t think I’ve ever really written about Oropher before
What canon information we have on Oropher is very limited and some is even somewhat contradictory. He is the father of Thranduil and was slain in the Last Alliance at the end of the second age. All other information we must gain from speculation or headcanon
My headcanons:
Oropher was born in Doriath in the early first age, the great grandson of two of the Unbegotten.
His parents were minor nobles in Doriath though came relatively rarely to the court of Thingol
Oropher worked as a scribe in the court of Thingol as a young adult
He was interested in linguistics including the tongues of beasts and birds as well as politics from an early age. He studied several dialects of Sindarin and Silvan and later Bëorian Taliska at the Havens of Sirion
He fled to the Havens after the Second Kinslaying and was one of the lorekeepers there, consulted on occasion by Elwing
He survived the last kinslaying and traveled East where he reunited with several Silvan lords he had known in his youth
As for the other characters!
Thingol and Melian: Oropher was certainly known to Thingol though not closely. He was of a number of scribes and lower members of the court.
Dior: Though grieved at Thingol’s death and the loss of Melian, Oropher served Dior loyally and fought to defend him in the Second Kinslaying before being ordered to flee with other citizens
Mablung and Beleg (and the other marchwardens): Oropher likely spoke with them not too infrequently, seeking news of the world beyond Doriath as I believe he was curious for knowledge. He perhaps learned to fight from one of the marchwardens though battle was never a passion of his.
Túrin: he probably didn’t see Túrin very often and most of what he knew, he knew after; after both the fleeing of Túrin and the news Mablung finally brought back of the entire family’s fate. Túrin I think avoided much of the Doriath nobles, preferring the deeper woods and the company of people like Nellas. If they did meet in Túrin’s youth, Oropher probably would have been politely inquisitive.
The same is probably true for Beren. Oropher avoided the human conflicts and did not give much thought to humans in general until he fled to the Havens of Sirion
Saeros and Daeron: As I headcanon Oropher was interested in linguistics he probably knew or at least knew of Daeron as he studied his alphabet and other writings. As a member of the court he had at least a passing familiarity with Saeros and could have collaborated with him on occasion
I hope this is ok and that you see this! Feel free to ask anything more!

Text
Beleg is a healer. His practical experience is field medicine - the kinds of wounds you would get on a battlefield or out on the marches. Broken bones, wounds, minor burns, to some degree internal injuries etc.
He also has a vast knowledge of herb-lore and plants and which plants make good treatments - and which to avoid. He can identify them easily and he knows how to make salves, ointments and teas from them. Most of this is knowledge gained through long years of trial and error.
But Beleg's ability extends beyond this practical experience and into the spiritual:
Now Beleg was sorely wounded, but he was mighty among the Elves of Middle-earth, and he was moreover a master of healing. (Of Túrin Turambar, Silmarillion)
In the morning Beleg, being swiftly healed of his pains, after the manner of the Elven-folk of old, spoke to Túrin apart. (Narn i Hîn Húrin, UT)
Now was it that it came into the heart of Beleg the hunter of the Elves to seek after Turin so soon as his own hurts were healed. This being done in no great number of days, for he had a skill of healing… (Turambar and the Foaloke, BOLT2) (Source for the quotes + some interesting info)
He can heal - both himself and others - with his fëa, much like we see Glorfindel/Arwen heal Frodo or Tauriel heal Kili.
It takes considerably more effort to heal others than himself and it can leave him feeling drained and weak.
Healing himself, on the other hand, is a rejuvenating experience and will leave him both healed and feeling energised, at least temporarily.
His ability to heal like this is considerably stronger than many healers, since it is (partially - there would be exceptions) tied to the age of the fëa. Both in verses where he lives and ones where he is reborn, it becomes even stronger, although he uses it far less and would consider himself 'out of practice'.

Turindreth for the ship game?
you and @elyksina both sent me the exact same ask lol. also there’s A Lot here so I’m trimming it down a little bit
How did they first meet?
obv they met when Túrin first arrived in Nargothrond. Orodreth greeted Gwindor welcome but then he pushed Gwindor aside like “and WHO is that???”
Who felt romantic feelings first?
Turin just arrived in Nargothrond and Orodreth was immediately like “omg free hot guy?? for me??”. it took Túrin a bit longer to reciprocate, still mourning Beleg
Did either of them try to resist their feelings?
no, Orodreth didn’t feel stigma around being attracted to a human, being the nephew of #1 Humanfucker. like he saw Finrod bringing Beor home and he was like damn I’ve got to get myself one of those
Who initiated their feelings first?
Orodreth. his crush wasn’t subtle at all and he didn’t hesitate to start flirting with Túrin
Who said “I love you” first?
Orodreth flirted with Túrin a lot, but Túrin was the first to actually say the words
Who gets jealous easily?
“excuse you that is MY human😤”
Who is more protective?
Túrin, since he already lost one elf lover (and he’s going to lose another oops)
What does a first date look like for them?
Orodreth took Túrin into a big romantic garden. Túrin actually didn’t realize it was a date at first, he thought Orodreth was just like that. but he’s like ok cool guess we’re a thing now
What do they like to do together?
so have you seen that one post about the very wealthy and gay guy who had the football team train at his house just so he could stare at them working out? that’s mormedreth. but like they also go on dates to the gardens and concert halls and enjoy quiet nights in with fancy tea
Which one gets angry the most, leaving the other to calm them down?
Túrin doesn’t really get angry at Orodreth but he gets flashbacks to Beleg’s death and freaks out over it, waking up suddenly from nightmares, and Orodreth calms him down
Do they like PDA?
Orodreth is very much into pda, he loves showing off his trophy human. Túrin is a little embarrassed about it but his touch starved ass can’t say no to the affection
Who hogs the blankets?
they go to bed normally and then Orodreth wakes up in a full blanket burrito
Who’s more likely to initiate sex?
Orodreth. Túrin just enters his room like normal and Orodreth is just there chilling on his bed in lingerie
Who’s the kinkiest?
Orodreth isn’t super kinky but he does like to use those fluffy pink handcuffs that straight women go wild over at bachelorette parties
Who is the top and bottom in their sex life? Are they interchangeable?
Orodreth is a pillow princess, bottomest bottom to ever bottom. Túrin tops but he’s a switch by nature and sometimes he just wants to get fucked too you know. he asks Orodreth to top and Orodreth is like “I don’t know what to do 😭”
Who likes giving and who likes receiving oral?
they both like giving, Orodreth in a bottom way and Túrin in a service top kind of way (also in a pls let me bottom already kind of way)
Can they last more than one round?
so in my headcanon elves just don’t have refractory periods, they can just keep going again and again. he doesn’t actually realize that humans need to wait a bit and he’s like “on to round two!” and Túrin is like “blease,, give a man a break”
Which one is a morning person?
neither of them, but Túrin is the one who has to wake up earlier more often for his duties. Orodreth is like nooo stay in bed with me 🥺
Do either of them like to cook?
neither of them, Túrin can’t cook for shit (it’s the curse) and Orodreth is too pretty to cook
Does anyone object to their relationship?
Finduilas is kinda freaked out over the fact that her crush ended up with her dad instead lol. she doesn’t object per se, but she’s also concerned about the relationship taking over Orodreth’s role as king, ie the bridge
Do they have any kids?
Finduilas stepdaughterzoned
Do they have any pets?
Orodreth has some lapdogs of overly expensive breeds

did I already ask Morwen and Maedhros for the ask game? if so I am so sorry. if not them!
-@outofangband
@outofangband you didn't! :) here they are
Morwen:
one aspect about them i love
her vibes! the fact that she apparently intimidates servants of morgoth! the witchiness of it all!
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
hmm i'm not sure if i've got one for this! her fandom is so small that everyone who writes her seems to know her better than I do.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
for some reason i always picture her as having a big herb garden/using a lot of dried herbs. she also reads to me as superstitious.
one character i love seeing them interact with
turin! they seem like they really get each other. also, thanks to you, aerin.
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
hmm i want her to hang out with beleg. i think they'd have a good time. also i want her to meet fingon.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
hmm... i feel like she saw a lot of herself in turin and part of the reason she sent him away was knowing that he would be treated similarly to how she was.
and Maedhros:
one aspect about them i love
White fire in his eyes as one who returns from the dead!! AHHHHHH. Love this vibe so much I'm obsessed with it.
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
I think a lot of fandom portrayals tend to write his PTSD as very quiet/sad/anxious and understate his canon tendencies towards anger and violence. I really wish more people were interested in exploring the "sharper" aspects of his PTSD, since canonically we see quite a lot of that. And I think it's a more interesting internal struggle for him -- lashing out at people he loves, despite not wanting to, struggling to keep his cool, etc.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
I personally don't think he wore a prosthetic all that often! Probably only in diplomatic settings. I think he got very good at using the stump of his wrist to hold/steady/manipulate objects. I also think he did use it to be affectionate with people -- it is the natural one for someone to hold, after all.
one character i love seeing them interact with
Oh man so many! Very basic answers are Maglor and Fingon, which seems to be all I've been writing lately lol.
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
Gil-galad! Especially in contexts where Gil is not closely related to him or his favorite people (so, Gil as Finrod's or Orodreth's son). I think they work well as foils for one another -- both doomed leaders trying to herd cats in very unstable times.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
I think he and Maglor often share the same bed in the later days, which is definitely somewhat strange for brothers. Both very paranoid about losing each other, both are very prone to nightmares, and both of them sleep fully dressed just in case. Also I think he's a very clunky dancer.
