i love love love Cadence being a zombie, its the bread and butter of my infatuation with her and so fun to think about what the curse entails and how she deals with it. if you havent seen it already heres a post where i talk more about her undeath! i dont have that much to add to it rn but i will definitely, definitely provide new zombie cadence content soon enough. its actually inevitable

and of course, of course I think Octavo is a vampire because how couldnt i??? a long time ago I think I talked about what LoZ vampires are like but it needs an updated rewrite-- essentially i like to believe that vampirism is a curse created by Vaati, and they're more often than not insanely powerful, greedy mages that need a steady source of magic to function and carnivorous tendencies that become more uncontrollable the less they feed

Octavo was lucky enough at a young age for a Great Fairy to give a portion of herself to provide enough magic to last him til adulthood, but its only relatively recently he's begun feeling truly hungry again, and it terrifies him. He finds himself suppressing the urge to use his fangs, especially if he's becoming impatient with someone or losing his temper; this irascible mood definitely didnt help prevent CoH from happening

i also agree that he would normally find the thought of getting messy with his feeding and staining his good clothes both undesirable and extremely disgusting, but if he's really In The Zone it wont matter to him anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ he would absolutely prefer to drink it out of a wine glass by a longshot if only there was the market for blood-wine LOL

It... actually really bothers me that Itachi’s torture via Tsukuyomi of his seven year old brother is... kind of rewarded by the narrative by having Sasuke’s trauma manifest in exactly the way that Itachi wanted and planned for? In that Sasuke was intensely motivated to come find him and kill him, and had the drive to seek the skills to do that? I mean, if you disregard all of the ways it didn’t go to plan, what with Sasuke leaving the village and not being in a position to be labeled a hero, but he doesn’t seem to care about Sasuke’s mental wellbeing beyond ‘alive’, and he has a back up plan to literally brainwash the brother he loves into working for the canonically corrupt village if he turns against it, so that’s not an issue. But if Orochimaru never bit Sasuke and put the curse mark on him, it could be argued that Itachi’s plan may have worked to a T.

And trauma... doesn’t work that way? People react to it in different ways and you can’t predict at the outset how it’s going to go? Honestly if somebody told me that it was canon that Itachi added an element of suggestion or outright brainwashing to his Tsukuyomi to make his brother act in the way he thought was best for him, I would not be surprised and consider it in character. I suppose there’s the argument that he knew that Sasuke would react that way because of the Curse of Hatred, but even if I didn’t hate the CoH for reminding me too much of those bigots who use “science” to prove another groups inferiority, I would hate it from a writing stand point because it actively makes the situation LESS nuanced and the writing weaker.

And then the few people who find out what he did are like “wow,,, what a tragic and noble hero” and Kishimoto goes OUT OF HIS WAY to convince us (via informing us that Itachi was fit to be Hokage as a fricken toddler or something, which, NO) that every part of Itachi’s plan was literally the only thing he could have done in that situation and there’s not a single person in my memory who tells Sasuke that no matter what his intentions were, Itachi was in the wrong for hurting him. Or even that Itachi was put in a difficult situation but it still sucked that Sasuke went through that much pain and suffering.

(And look;;; I KNOW that Sasuke is a controversial character. I know what people think of his canon self and sometimes I even agree. Sometimes I feel like Kishimoto completely destroyed his character after Itachi’s retraumatization-no-jutsu, sometimes I feel like his character makes sense when I look at in from an in-universe perspective, and that Kishimoto just did a bad job conveying his grief and trauma in a completely unshallow way. BUT. Even in the interpretation that Sasuke is trash and completely irredeemable after he leaves the village, THAT STILL DOESN’T MEAN THE LITERAL SEVEN YEAR OLD DESERVED WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM. The fact that his trauma doesn’t excuse the fact that Sasuke hurt other people doesn’t mean that Itachi’s actions were any way right or good).

And... it makes me want SO MANY FIC where Itachi’s terrible, controlling, traumatizing plan was destroyed before it could get off the ground JUST by... Sasuke having a different reaction to trauma than the one he wanted. There are so many ways you could go:

-Sasuke becomes depressed and washes out of the academy! Trauma can effect you executive functions, and having Sasuke just... not be able to keep up with his training and school work, not even being able to get out of bed some days. Being the last Uchiha and the council seeing themselves as entitled to his powers and his loyalty, they try to find ways to push him but ultimately they can’t justify passing him when he won’t be useful in the field. All that potential stagnating because he had a response to trauma many real people have. (This Sasuke is super in danger from Danzo because you really think he’s just going to let him lay around as a civilian?)

-Sasuke passes, but even though he was ok fighting with other kids back at the academy, when he gets in a real fight he has flashbacks and panic attacks. If it doesn’t straight up get him killed in battle, it almost does, and they are eventually forced to bench him when it becomes clear the problem isn’t going away. (Hey,,, maybe in this world they’ll realize that he needs some mental treatment and give him some instead of leaving him to waste away in the Uchiha compound? ...unlikely)

-Instead of becoming obsessed with vengeance, Sasuke becomes obsessed with the idea that a) you cannot trust anyone, no matter how kind they seem, and b) Sasuke is a danger to everyone around him and cannot let himself get close to anyone who is ACTUALLY good because if he does then Itachi will come back and kill them. This Sasuke still comes across as an arrogant loner, and still wants to get stronger, but in this case the motivation is explicitly to protect people or at least not be a danger to them. He’s terrified of letting anyone in but when he finally gets close to his team or something his Nindo is to protect them even at the cost of his own life. There’s a case to be made that a lot of these aspects are present in pre retraumatization-no-jutsu Sasuke, but here it’s the main focus, and he puts their lives over potential vengeance, etc.

-Some actual post traumatic growth? IDK, i don’t know how likely it’d be given that the village sent him back to the place of his trauma and left him to live there for years completely isolated from the rest of the village, but I guess it’s possible.

And in all of them, Itachi having to confront that HE DID A BAD and him hurting his brother was not something necessary for the greater good but a cruel attempt at controlling him that didn’t even work. Because... it REALLY bugs me that it DID, in a fashion, work.

I don’t think Eru is evil or anything like that. i think the valar can’t really understand the Children and their conflicts come from that - idk about Eru, though, we don’t see a lot of him. he seems very powerful and absent, i guess? he only really intervenes when the situation is Truly Dire and then he shows more of a force of unimaginable power than like, divine mercy or anything

Favourite AU setting?i really like the two-steps-to-the-left-of-canon AU settings where everything is juuuusst slightly more magical than it is in canon and things like wraiths and revivification are more commonplace. that may be cheating though so i got to say that i’m always here for scifi/space AUs! (normally i’d go right to modern AU but i feel like because of lifespans, modern AUs fall apart with the silm unless you’re going very small-scale with them)

Favourite crack pairing/concept/headcanon?“crack” is weird in the silm because of the dubious canonosity of Literally Everything... my fav ~crack~ pairing is probably turgon/finrod but that has evolved from “crack” to “rarepair hell” for me lmao. i also really love @princess-faelivrin‘s fin-galad headcanon! and i am currently daydreaming about some way that nienor is connected to goldberry - oh and tar-miriel as the witch-king is always a good one. really, anything that keeps the ladies alive for longer!

First, Second or Third Age?i mean they all have their good parts, but like... first age, probably. third age has gigolas and all the characters from the hobbit, which is tempting, but there’s just so MUCH to work with in the first age! second age is neat too but i’m not really a numenor person so...

22. Do you read/understand/speak any of the languages or alphabets?lmao no!! with resources i can put together names for folks and i can recognize certain elements of words, but that’s about it.

Who is Gil-galad’s father?i’m throwing my hat in the ring for Orodreth, but that’s only when i don’t want to make it like, a Thing. i really love explorations of this uncertainty (@elvntari‘s gil-galad fic springs to mind, as does @thishazeleyeddemon‘s lalwen theory, maybe with cirdan as the dad, and fin-galad is again a blessed concept) and i’m also very fond of the idea that his parentage is “no one in particular” and that he just stepped forward to claim the throne when no one else wanted it. really i’m open to every interpretation! except fingon. i don’t think it’s fingon. i mean, it could very well be that fingon is his dad as in he’s the one who raised him and claimed him, but if we’re going biologically i don’t think fingon contributed any genetic material to gil-galad

24. Angbang, Russingon or Silvergifting?i mean this is a no-brainer. of course it’s russingon! i do enjoy angbang and silvergifting, but like cmon.one of these days i’d love to write a really long angbang fic detailing everything btwn them, probably mostly from mairon’s pov, from ainulindale to the fourth age but that would be an undertaking. i do have a lot of tiny ideas for them that would be fun to weave together. as for silvergifting, just...poor tyelpe. poor dude. but i am suuuuch a slut for russingon lmao.

25. What would you most like to see in a tv series or film based on the Silmarillion?i would LOVE to see a book-accurate version but like. that’s VERY unlikely. a COH adaptation would be neat but probably too dark to make it to audiences without being seriously watered down. Beren and Luthien might be able to do it, if they could condense the supporting lore around the story. that’s really the problem with the silm - it’s like a greek myth in it’s epic sprawl. there’s so much story that you can’t really take just one aspect of it to the screen without taking all of it. if you don’t know about the silmarils you can’t do B&L, if you don’t know about the nirnaeth and the histories of nargothrond and doriath you can’t do COH, if you don’t know about the sundering and the exiles you can’t do literally anything tbh.BUT i would love a COH adaptation, if it’s done right. or a very ~experimental~ take on B&L. i have a lot of ideas of how to incorporate all the different versions of that story into one cohesive canon... ok i admit it i just want to see telvido on screen!!! and also werewolves are neat!!

also i’ve said it before but a 3-act play set in numenor....HMM that would be some good hsit. really, i think the mariner’s wife would make an excellent drama, but again there’s so much CONTEXT around numenor!the 3 acts would be 1. elros’s transformation into tar-minyatur (there’s so many possibilities to explore! it’s basically uncharted waters once you get to the details!) 2. the mariner’s wife (a pretty faithful adaptation, also tar-meneldur’s monologue when he passes the scepter on to aldarion is just. WRITTEN to be performed on stage imo) and 3. akallabeth (again, lots of ways this could go. i also think it would be really neat to double cast elros and pharazon. and sauron should be double cast too, though idk who as.)

I would love your thoughts on Dirhavel, vocaroo or text? Just because you were recently blogging about Hurin and I suppose this is kind of related. :)

A lot of my interest in Dirhavel is in his sources. The most detailed description we get of who he consulted in composing the Narn is from a pretty early stage of Tolkien’s legendarium-composition, which, let me just paste that here:

…this lay was the work of a Mannish poet, Dirhavel, who lived at the Havens in the days of Earendel and theregathered all the tidings and lore that he could of the House ofHador, whether among Men or Elves, remnants and fugitivesof Dorlomin, of Nargothrond, or of Doriath. From Mablung he learned much; and by fortune also he found a man namedAndvir, and he was very old, but was the son of that Androgwho was in the outlaw-band of Turin, and alone survived thebattle on the summit of Amon Rudh.(2) Otherwise all that timebetween the flight of Turin from Doriath and his coming toNargothrond, and Turin’s deeds in those days, would haveremained hidden, save the little that was remembered amongthe people of Nargothrond concerning such matters as Gwindoror Turin ever revealed. In this way also the matter of Mim andhis later dealings with Hurin were made clear. This lay was allthat Dirhavel ever made, but it was prized by the Elves andremembered by them. Dirhavel they say perished in the last raidof the sons of Feanor upon the Havens. His lay was composedin that mode of verse which was called Minlamad thent / estent.

Okay. So the first glaring Problem is Mablung: we know Mablung didn’t escape Doriath in the final timeline. But of course Mablung is in all other ways the ideal source for the Narn poet—we need that Mablung’s eye view on Nienor and Morwen on the trip to Nargothrond, Turin as he was that final morning in Brethil, etc. There’s another possibility, I suppose, which is that Dirhavel talks to one of the unnamed riders who form the rest of Morwen’s escort and (perhaps?) escape the clusterfuck at Nargothrond to ride out with Mablung again when he goes seeking Nienor and Turin in Brethil—but that’s not super satisfying, unless we can come up with anything else about the rider. We could also think in terms of people Mablung might choose as a confidante. Beleg’s out. Melian’s out, unfortunately. Hmm. Well, let me not string you along, I obviously have an idea here, although it’s a stupid one: NELLAS. Maybe a) Mablung started talking to Nellas after the trial/Beleg’s disappearance, since no one else was going to keep her updated and she was not going to stop creepily staring at him from a tree until he gave her an answer … b) it developed into a genuine friendship?? … c) Nellas took inspiration from Nienor and disguised herself as one of the riders who go with Mablung to Brethil? Or just legitimately went as a volunteer, who cares. Or like, everyone knew she was going along as a volunteer, but she still went in disguise, because it made her feel better.

…Hmm. Anyway, my point is, I like the idea of Nellas among the refugees in Sirion, and I like the idea of her making Dirhavel promise that he’ll list “Mablung” as his source, not “Nellas, who hates publicity.” I think it fits well in a few other ways—we know she spoke (and passed on to Turin) the beautiful ancient Doriath dialect or whatever, and one of the few pieces of information we’re given about Dirhavel is that he “has great skill in” Sindarin, which suggests to me not just fluency but mastery of multiple registers and a linguistic interest in Sindarin’s character as a language: maybe he got some material from Nellas, or it was what allowed him to talk to Nellas in the first place, or ideally both. Also, I have no basis for this actually, but Nellas seems like the kind of person who would be a really good mimic, A+ impressions—I hope this played a role in her teaching Turin about animals—and again I think it would be cool if there really was this feeling of Nellas like, channeling Mablung for the purposes of getting his testimony, in kind of the flip of Beleg summoning her for Turin’s trial.

Downsides to this theory: CoH specifically says that “Nellas of Doriath never saw [Túrin] again, and his shadow passed from her.” I don’t want to take this from Nellas!! I want to let his shadow pass from her! Still, I feel like ‘burning voyeuristic curiosity’ is distinct from ‘helpless loyalty to a memory,’ so maybe I can fudge it.

Moving on, I’m also suuuuuuuper interested in what “the people of Nargothrond” means here tbh. GWINDOR SURVIVED AND WENT TO THE HAVENS jk I love the freaking jab about “the little that… Gwindor or Turin ever revealed” too much to tamper with his post-mortem reticence, at least for the duration of this theory post. But, so, people from Nargothrond… I mean, I guess what puzzles me is the idea that it’s specifically Nargothrond’s survivors who know what happened to Mim, for example. Does that mean there were survivors in the area up to 5 years after the sack?? I guess that makes sense, now I think about it—people living off the land/going from part-time woodelf back to full-time woodelf, people who were left for dead in the battle—but I had never considered it before and it’s kind of weirding me out. Or do we imagine that Glaurung reserved a subset of the prisoners for his own slaves? That’s. Uhhh. Weird. I really don’t know what to picture for “witnesses to Mim’s death,” although I guess they could just have found the body after Hurin left. That’s a little more reasonable. That said what would make way MORE sense would be for Mim to have been one of the sources, given how many private Turin-Mim conversations are recorded. I realize Androg is supposed to have been eavesdropping but did he REALLY relay ALL of his eavesdropping to his adult son. Also, if you were Mim, would you not take this golden opportunity to pointedly enter your own “death” into the historical record

But listen, I saw his face, he WOULD have killed me if he hadn’t been busy playing hackey-sack with the Nauglamir. What do you mean he threw himself into the ocean somewhere near here, why would the ocean kill him, this isn’t safe”

…As for Dirhavel himself, I don’t know if I have a ton of headcanons. I guess I was thinking of him (??) as the kid of refugees from Brodda’s house, although man, now that I say that that feels like the kind of thing that would absolutely be mentioned if ‘true.’ Okay, here’s my thinking: I imagine him growing up in the Havens, not having ever been himself enslaved by the Easterlings, even as a child, and I also assume he was at least late 30s/40 when he died, so it would make SENSE if his parent(s) escaped in the 490s, and… hm. I guess that’s not super strong evidence. Because he’s listed as a man of the House of Hador and not, say, a man with a Hadorian mother and a Haladin father or something, I was thinking it would make sense if both his parents came from Dor-lomin and knew each other before Sirion, which was much more of a melting pot, but there’s really a bunch of unjustified assumptions I’m making there that don’t stand up to close examination, so, eh. On the other hand it’s kind of cute. Look. Whatever. I’m going to arbitrarily say I also picture him being related to Asgon. OH the other reason I was thinking about Brodda-refugees was because I was like, “where would the special affinity for Sindarin have come from,” and we know Brodda specifically seized most of Hurin’s holdings/people, and like sure everyone spoke Sindarin by then but I imagine nowhere moreso than in Hurin and Morwen’s service? To be polite to all the elf ambassadors constantly tramping through the garden if nothing else? So, that is my still deeply shaky basis. Thanks.

I was going to throw in some bullshit meta at the end here about blah blah the longest lay from those days not because more stuff HAPPENS in the Narn but because of the human preference for some granular description in the language whereas elves save the details for the telepathic music video, and also about the elves prizing the Narn because elf musicians never INTERVIEW people, the survivors of Nargothrond have never been INTERVIEWED before, no one ever talks to us!! It’s so enlivening. Then I decided I wouldn’t type it out. Then apparently I typed it out anyway. I do love the Narn being composed in Sirion because it really captures something about Sirion’s feeling of ill-defined urgency, like, we know we have to do SOMETHING… it’s all down to us… but what…… and in what timeframe… oh god, are we going to have to talk it out. I like the mechanical constraints—it can’t be a Numenorean reconstruction or whatever because it’s too immediate and living a piece of history, and he wants it to be history, and yet the Narn is in some senses about the end of history for Beleriand, or the end of its great bastions, so how do you get it written? Well, by engineering one more pause for breath. Okay. Sirion. And Dirhavel running around in the middle of that is someone I FEEL like I have a very clear image of, even if I haven’t actually talked about hypothetical personality at all here, nor would I because I suck at textual ghosts. Cute, though.

Day 4, 5/3/2017

I swear I’m literally the slowest person walking in nyc right now. I spent 20 minutes walking from home to Stern because i don’t want to pay 8 bucks for uber. As I was walking, I saw an 80-year-old grandpa walking past me, and I was like yo i’m chill keep walking good for you (fake lols)

I went to PT, i told Robert: i have two news, one good, one bad, which one do you wanna hear first? Robert: What’s the good news. I: I think I’m having some motion back for my right ankle. He looked at me: I think something happened to your left foot.... I: (real lols) Yah i sprained my left foot. Precious conversations. Robert said both my feet actually looked fine and forced me to do leg press right after. I don’t like intense people (sarcasm sign up lmao)

It feels great to go outside again. Feels great to see the sun again. Feels great to have human interaction again. Yesterday had a long fun talk with Serena and she tried to take 乌青眼 back but I fought to keep her. 乌青眼 is a super cute fluffy cat which I secretly stole from Serena and i just named her yesterday. I named every one of my fluffy animal and I talk to them like psycho does and I introduce them to my friends and freak them out. My favorite one is George, he’s a penguin I got in Atlanta when I went to Shaky Beats. Because ATL is in Georgia State, so I named him George. He’s the one that needs the most love, I can just tell. So one time when Winny came over and slept on my bed, I said can you hold George when you’re sleeping cuz he needs love. I’m not psycho I promise, I’m just so “emotionally available” quote Serena- I explained it as there’re just too much love in my chest and they’re pouring out but no one’s at the other end to receive so i give all of them to my fluffy friends.

Serena logged on my facebook yesterday so I guess now I’m officially going on messenger right now. (Her favorite is Dolan the bunny by the way). And the moment i checked my message I realize how care-free I was the last three days, because you don’t care when you don’t know. It bugs me how much I care while the others don’t. Christina labeled me as “pro of ignoring people” I said no I miss human contact, but human just keep disappointing you don’t they. I never ignore people who don’t ignore me, I ignore because it’s my revenge, it’s me paying you back passive aggressively. I need an intervention geez (fake lols)

Apparently i am a funny person- I myself don’t even see it. My friend screenshot my email and send it to me and say he can’t stop laughing reading my email. I wish i have the ability to amuse myself just as I amuse others (fake lols)

Today is such a great day. I talked to tons of people I bumped into at school. I asked Damodaran question and he answered so nicely and I’m more than pumped to write my own story on COH! I get productive with Daisy and get all my data from Capital IQ, which I’ve never tried before (woohoo) I ate healthily, and I went to PT. I don’t see how this is not a great way to spend my last 10 days at NYU, especially when i’m officially disabled. Serena said she’s really glad that I still have a sense of humor right now. DUH dude.

I realized I missed the last class of The Science of Happiness and this fact made me so unhappy I felt like the half semester of this class went to waste. I miss those weirdly wonderful people raising their hands and sharing their stories in front of 350 strangers. It feels like a rehab. It’s okay. How can you spell LIFE without REGRET anyway (you actually can, this is a very bad joke, sorry)

1. Apple now has $250 bn cash on balance sheet right now, WHERE THE HELL can they even store this amount of cash??? that’s why it’s trapped cash i guess

2. Damodaran told the best joke of the day. “WSJ posted an article listing the 60 companies that Apple can buy with $250 bn, like Tesla or Disney (what the hell does Apple want Tesla for??) I don’t know what’s the point. You look at world’s GDP, and you can list out 60 countries Apple can buy with $250 bn, they can buy Venezuela.” OMG MADE MY DAY LMAO.

3. My EAD card is finally in process! HELLO TAIWAN!!

4. I don’t like the feeling when I start using messenger again, the itch in my hand is back, and I constantly want to check if people reply I HATE IT

5. I am so emotionally available to the extent that I can feel this emotionally attached with someone I’ve never seen and never even had real conversations with. Wait is this emotionally available or just low self-esteem I don’t even understand myself (i think it’s just the fact that he commented “city of stars” on soundcloud really blow the cuteness out of me LIKE FOR REAL<3)

6. I swear in a month I won’t even remember this guy’s name so just let time does its working magic thanks

7. Now i find you can call uber on your laptop, WHAT’S THE POINT OF HAVING A PHONE EVER AGAIN??

Today’s college report features Odesza, simply because I miss ATL SO F MUCH THAT MY CHEST PHYSICALLY HURTS WHEN I TYPE THESE.
