The Malevolent Tides: First Except!
A post-TLH story! Synopsis here.
Note: I chose an excerpt with characters who are all named in the synopsis so you can figure out who they all are!

“Sororicide is illegal,” Margie piped in, which Elizabeth did not think was particularly helpful.
“Is cousin-icide illegal?” Edmund asked darkly, glaring at Vienna. He had gone to stand next to Cadia, who was grinning at him sideways.
“Luckily for you, we aren’t really cousins,” Vienna said, batting her eyes once more, “So really, we can be together. The Clave cannot keep our love apart.”
Edmund scowled.
“I think all murder is illegal,” Alaina chimed in helpfully; she had wandered over to her grandparents, and was seated between Will and Tessa on the couch.
“Sometimes murder can be justified,” Will said diplomatically, wrapping an arm around Alaina’s shoulders, “For example, have I ever told the tale of the time I slew your great-grandfather, the evil, pox-ridden Benedict Lightworm?”
“Will!” Tessa chastised again, but it was for show; Will had already told them all the story, many, many times.
“I thought Uncle Gabriel killed the worm,” Matthew said, and James groaned. Elizabeth couldn’t help but smile - her father clearly didn’t want to hear the story again.
“Clearly you need a reminder,” Will said, grinning enthusiastically. “It was a dark and stormy night-”
“-it was the middle of the day,” Tessa interjected.
“-and young Gabriel Lightwood barreled into the institute, bloody and terrified, seeking my world-renowned expertise on a vile disease called demon pox.”
“How does one get demon pox?” Alaina asked innocently.
“You know the song, dear granddaughter,” Will said, beginning to sing, “‘One must go down to the bad part of town, and stay until-’”
“I think that’s enough of the story for today!” Jesse said quickly, covering his daughter’s ears.

the ballroom was filled with species nicholas had only seen a few times in his life, people he knew by name and family, which he didn't give second thoughts about. however, it was clear to him that some were invited because of their name and wealth ⸻ along with a gift no mundane should've received.
it didn't take that long for nicholas to notice a face that seemed out of place. she looked pale in the presence of this world, and a part of him recognized her features. there were a few happenings in his life nicholas had crossed paths with those with the sight, and for some reason she resembled one of them. it had been years before his departure to Germany, but he would never forget the frightened look upon her as he'd crouched down, covered in ichor from a demon. with ease, he moved on the floor before towering above the woman. "we've met before." he mused and couldn't help but wonder if he could once again see that look of horror upon her face.

BIOGRAPHY
Theresa Gray is the daughter of the greater demon, Belial and an unmarked shadow hunter, Elizabeth Gray. For much of her early life, she had no idea of what she truly was or her parentage. Her parents were killed in a carriage accident when she was just three years old and from then on, Tessa went to live with her aunt Harriet, along with her brother Nate. Her aunt Harriet was overprotective of her and spoiled Nate, but Tessa found her comfort in books, dreaming of the adventures she read about.
At 16, her aunt Harriet died and upon her death, Nate arranged for Tessa to come to London. When she got to London however, that was when she met the Dark sisters. It transpired that they took her as a kind of prisoner, forcing her to discover her true power of shapeshifting and realise that she was far from mundane. Luckily, she was rescued from them by a young shadowhunter named Will Herondale and he took her back to the London Institute with him.
During her time with the London Institute, Tessa fell in love with Will and the two ended up in a relationship together and ultimately married. They had two children together, James and Lucie and ran the institute together. They shared many years together until Will died of old age. Tessa endured watching her family die of old age whilst she remained and for a long time, sought refuge in the Labrinth. She finally returned, however, and now is a scholar warlock, along with helping Magnus with High Warlock duties.

História:
Delilah Harper, mais conhecida como Lila, nasceu em Londres, filha de um casal rico e criada em uma casa invejada por todos. Entretanto, mesmo com uma casa incrível, seu intelecto avançado para sua idade lhe fez passar a maior parte da sua infância em uma escola privada para garotas e ainda conseguiu passar em uma idade recorde. Ninguém nunca havia conseguido entrar aos seis anos de idade, mas Lila simplesmente era um prodígio. Mesmo assim, ficando tanto tempo longe, ainda havia sido criada com muito amor, seus pais claramente eram apaixonados um pelo outro e o seu lar era a casa dos sonhos de muita gente. Incluindo os sonhos dela própria, pois tinha noção do quão sortuda era.
O problema era que nada tão bom e perfeito duraria para sempre, certo? Logo a mãe de Lila ficou doente, com seus sintomas sendo esquisitos e sem sentido para todos os médicos que iam se consultar e não demorou muito para que ela viesse a falecer. Obviamente que isso destruiu o mundo de Lila, porque como iria conseguir seguir sem sua mãe? Mesmo que fosse tão nova, não tinha como imaginar o resto da sua vida daquela maneira. Felizmente seu pai estava ali, e foi somente graças a ele que conseguiu se segurar. Os dois ficaram ainda mais próximos depois dessa triste tragédia, com o homem retirando a sua filha da escola por um ano para poder focar neles dois e para que ele pudesse lidar com o luto. Só que, do dia para a noite, tudo mudou novamente.
Lila perdeu seu pai. Não como havia perdido sua mãe, ele ainda estava vivo, mas uma bela noite o homem chegou falando que havia prometido algo para seu melhor amigo que havia falecido há poucos meses (com os mesmos sintomas que a mãe de Lila). Havia prometido cuidar da sua viúva quando ele partisse, e aparentemente o “cuidar” significava casar. Mesmo tão próximos, Lila nunca perdoou seu pai por isso. Por trair a memória da sua mãe daquela maneira. E então, para piorar, tiveram que se mudar para a cidade natal da mulher (Eden) e o homem se afastou, se tornando distante e viciado no trabalho, deixando a garota sozinha com sua nova madrasta, que por algum motivo achava que era algum tipo de rainha.
Ela passou a ser maltratada pela mais velha, mas não deixava que nada realmente a abalasse. Era forte, e durante as duas gravidez que a mulher teve, ela sumia por nove meses para voltar com o bebê já nascido, o que era muito estranho, mas Lila não fazia questão alguma de investigar porque era nesse meio tempo que seu pai voltava ao normal. Era quase como se ele estivesse sob efeito de algum feitiço, porque com a madrasta longe, ele voltava a ser seu pai e parecia que haviam voltado para Londres.
Só que a sorte sempre estava contra a garota e os padrões que sua vida estavam ali para lhe assombrar ano após ano, então não teve outra: seu pai também adoeceu. O homem estava apresentando os mesmos sintomas que sua mãe e seu padrinho (o melhor amigo de seu pai), por isso Lila nem teve esperanças de uma melhora. Ela já sabia para onde aquilo iria levar. Depois do falecimento do seu pai, a garota perdeu tudo que tinha. De maneira figurativa e literal. Sua madrasta, por ter duas filhas do homem, ficou com a maior parte da herança e praticamente roubou o pouco que Lila havia conseguido como “aluguel”.
Para resumir a história, Lila continuou vivendo com a mulher por um tempo e tendo que pagar para isso, até que uma noite teve um pesadelo horrível de um homem com olhos negros, pele pálida como de morto e presas afiadas lhe atacando, praticamente tentando arrancar seu coração com os dentes. Esse pesadelo despertou um medo em Lila que nunca havia sentido em toda sua vida. Ela foi protegida pelo colar de crucifixo que havia ganhado de sua mãe no sonho, o que lhe fez imaginar que poderia ser uma mensagem da mulher vinda do além, o que para ela se provou correto quando chegou em casa e percebeu que sua madrasta parecia ter a considerado como um caso fechado. Estava planejando se livrar dela. E foi isso que motivou a garota a se mudar, indo morar com sua melhor amiga e a família dela (além de outros seis amigos).
Ela eventualmente começou a trabalhar como professora de música e agora mora sozinha em um apartamento bem pequeno, mas tem uma vida calma e normal. A única coisa esquisita que acontece agora são marcas esquisitas (e fortes) em seu corpo que aparecem depois de uma ótima noite de sono, além do fato de ter pensado por um ano inteiro que havia perdido sua melhor amiga, mas na realidade era parece estar muito bem? Ok, talvez as coisas nunca tenham ficado normais. Parece que era impossível ter normal na vida de Lila. E talvez agora ela estivesse determinada a descobrir o porquê disso.

anyone else find it a major plothole and inconsistent that the modern-day Shadowhunters don’t know who Charlotte Fairchild is?
like, let’s be real. every single one of us in the united states knows who our first president was. i’m sure everyone in the UK, at some point, learns about the history of the british empire and who the first king of england was. everyone sure as hell knows who Elizabeth I was, let alone Victoria and Elizabeth II.
that’s just me being western-centric, too! i’m POSITIVE every single country on this forsaken planet knows who the first leader of their nation was, whether it’s disputed or not.
since, I’m American (i know, i’m sorry), I can tell you that we’ll never forget that Kamala Harris is the first female VP. that Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina on the US Supreme Court (okay, maybe that’s something us Latinas will never forget). but that brings me to my point-- wouldn’t at the very least, the ladies of the Clave freaking know who Charlotte was?
you’re gonna tell me that Jocelyn Fairchild didn’t know her family legacy? why else would the Fairchilds still have been a major family name in the Nephilim if no one rememebred who Charlotte Fairchild was? BS that everyone remembers the Herondales ran the London Institute but no one remembers Charlotte freaking Fairchild.
also, if literally all else fails, do we really think that Magnus doesn’t at least mention or reference the TID/TLH gang ever? Like, that’s literally how he and Tessa know each other. And we know that Tessa even talks about them even though it can be super painful for her to do so! In my mind, Magnus absolutely:
tells Clary about Charlotte and Henry and explains that Henry is the reason why the Fairchilds have notorious red hair
That Henry and he invented the Portal (and that Isabelle’s ancestor Cecily was the first to go through one even though she was only 15 and literally had only trained for like 2 months prior)
OR THAT MAGNUS DOESNT TELL ALEC ABOUT HIS LITERAL NAMESAKES? GIDEON, HIS SOMETHING-GREAT-UNCLE, OR ALEXANDER, THE THIRD CHILD OF SAID CECILY AND THEIR ANCESTOR GABRIEL LIGHTWOOD? SOPHIE, THE WIFE OF SAID SOMETHING-GREAT-UNCLE, THE NAMESAKE OF ISABELLE’S MIDDLE NAME?!?!?!?!?

Introducing: The Malevolent Tides
A Post-TLH Story - synopsis below!
Please note: The worldbuilding, TID, and TLH characters all belong to Cassandra Clare. I took the liberty to make up the children of the TLH characters (partially based off of the inaccurate Clockwork Princess family tree, but mostly from my own imagination). This story will contain spoilers for Chain of Thorns!
September, 1929: Coming of age during the mundane’s Great War and the Spanish Influenza, the young Shadowhunters of London are no strangers to demons and despair. In fact, compared to the hordes of demons attracted to Earth by the mundane conflicts of their youth, things have been relatively calm as the children grew from a troubled youth into a tentatively hopeful adolescence. Things are looking up… but little does this future “lost generation,” know, their light-hearted, wild youths are about to come to an abrupt end, as darkness and violence comes to claim the mundane - and shadow - worlds once again.
New York City, USA: Elizabeth Herondale has finally left her family’s home… and her drama with her brother, Owen, and his fiancée, Lydia, behind. Elizabeth is eager to forget her troubles in the vices that make New York City the center of the modern world; touted as a place where anyone can arrive a pauper and leave a millionaire, where women are free to move through the streets unaccompanied by men, and where illegal vices - booze, cards, jazz - are easier to find than avoid, Elizabeth is ready to relocate for good and reclaim her future. Accompanied by her intrepid parabatai and cousin, Margaret Blackthorn (who is more comfortable behind the lens of a camera than onstage in a flapper hall), Elizabeth has no plans to return to London any time soon. Then comes October, and the infamous crash of Wall Street that plunges the entire globe into economic recession. Elizabeth does not want to return home, but her and Margie might not have a choice in the matter…

various clockwork angel thoughts
-listening to the audiobook so i can get through everything before chain of thorns. i’ve both read and listened to the infernal devices books so many times, and prefer to read but i have a deadline baby! miss elizabeth bennet herself, jennifer ehle, narrating is so fun. her choice to give gabriel a goofy ass lisp is so fucking nuts but i respect her giving us variety in her accents
-thomas tanner making me sad this time for some reason! never cared too much about him before but the bit about how thomas and will were so close before jem arrived, shadow hunter and the servant boy
-charlotte always worried and henry always making soothing noises, i think this is mentioned like 20 times in 3 books
-holy water, holy water and blood
-i would read a brother enoch novella
-i never really appreciate how much i like tessa as our protagonist. she strikes a really perfect balance for me. i’m never annoyed with her, i love her i get her choices, i’m so FOND of her, i want her happy, i want her to have it all. she could very easily be boring at any moment but never is
-god this would make such a fun show! will it ever happen
-ok now how the fuck did balios and xanthos the horses become magic horses who can take a carriage places without a driver??? thomas or cyril always has to drive in TID but in TLH these horses are on autopilot! i’ve never seen cassie answer this in an ask and maybe i’ll find it this time in my re-read but please let me know if you know because it’s so fucking funny to me
- forgot about the mention of guns and why they can’t use them as weapons against demons and that henry has been trying to get them to work even back then and then we got to see that come back in tlh
-jessamine rules, truly so so mean and so so funny. i can’t believe jessie has just been hanging out as a ghost for 24 years
-i want to see grownup sophie and will hanging out. they are so funny in this book. sophie hates his guts
-jem and charlotte also have a dynamic i love. jem supports and listens probably more than anyone else in the institute
-drama queen will makes me wonder what it would be like if we got midnight heir version of james. i do really love the james herondale we have but would LOVE to see what cassie was originally do with the melodrama
-i think i also love this series the most bc i don’t love faerie/ the fae or seelie queen/ court drama and there’s practically none to be found
- i love everyone i love these people i love their children and i don’t want to see them sad EVER AGAIN
-are we gonna see tessa use her power in chain of thorns? i know tlh is not about the parents but i do think they’re all going to play a larger part in events or be in peril and have to be saved by their kids or something in that vain
