summary: the one where ej and andy reunite after years when they're cast as love interests, finally rekindling their friendship and maybe getting something else out of it as well

WHEN THEY ALL GOT TO THE THEATER, Andy saw EJ sneakily grab Miss Jenns Box.

"EJ!" She exclaimed, chasing after him as he picked up Miss Jenns box, rushing out of the room.

When she found him, he was sitting on the steps of one of the staircases and she instantly walked over.

"Andy, what are you doing here?" He asked, trying to hide the box behind himself but failing miserably.

"Stopping you from doing something you'll regret," she said and he sighed, knowing that he had been caught.

"I just need to know, please," he asked, voice filled with desperation.

Andy sighed, giving up as she nodded her head, knowing that it probably wasn't what he wanted.

They sat on the steps, shoulders touching as he opened the box, flipping through the pages until he got to Troy.

"Wait," she said, grabbing his hand as he held the folder, "Are you sure you want to do this?"

"I just-" he took a deep breath, thinking over his words, "-I just need to know what I did wrong and what could be better,"

"Fine, open it," she said and he opened it, reading notes about how he was the perfect Troy - on paper.

"Lacks emotional connection to the material?" He questioned, reading it out loud.

EJ turned to look at Andy, a confused look on his face, "Do you think thats true?" He questioned.

She sighed, "We should get back to the others," Andy ignored the question, not wanting to hurt him.

"Come on Andy. Do you think I lack emotional connection?" He asked again, desperate for the answer.

"Sometimes," she admitted, a flash of hurt crossing on EJs face, "But I think you can work on it, we can work in on," she grasped his hand.

He smiled at her, pulling her in for a hug, "Thanks, for letting me look, and for being honest," he whispered.

They walked back, him looking upset as they stood back stage, thinking about everything.

EJ felt weird, he had never felt like this before. It was like a fluttery feeling in his stomach as he looked at Andy who had a smile on her face as she listened to Miss Jenn.

He had just broken up with Nini and shouldn't feel like this, but it felt right. It felt better than Nini ever did.

"Okay, let's have some real talk," Miss Jenn said, calling everyone in.

Andy sighed, placing a hand on EJs shoulder reassuringly. He placed his hand on top, quickly pulling away as he noticed Ricky was watching them.

Neither of them were even sure what just happened as they walked over to listen to Miss Jenn.

"Welcome to Tech Rehearsal but most tech in this theater is hand cracked, Natalie Bagley, time to be my hero," Miss jenn said.

"Natalie Bagleys getting her wisdom teeth out," Seb explained as everyone mumbled amongst themselves, wondering where she was.

"Okay, so I'm down a stage manager and our Kelsi is MIA," Miss Jenn said, looking frustrated.

Andy stepped forward one step, "Gina messaged, she said she was okay, I'm sure she'll be back by opening night," she explained.

Miss Jenn nodded her head, "Sandbag!" She yelled out as she saw the rope snap.

Andy narrowed her eyes, not understanding what she meant. EJ saw, running over and grabbing Andy, the two tumbling to the floor as a sandbag fell on the place Andy just was.

Everyone stared at the two, EJ caging Andy in just to make sure everything was still safe.

"EJ, it's okay, we can get up now," Andy said quietly, seeing how everyone was watching them.

Her heart pounded as she looked at EJ above her, neither breaking eye contact as he checked if she was alright.

"Okay, if you two don't mind, we have tech rehearsal," Miss Jenn said, feeling bad that she breaking up their moment.

EJ stood up, extending his hand and she took it, allowing him to help her up. "You okay?" He asked and she nodded her head.

Andy smiled, "Yeah, thanks for that," she said and he smiled back at her, a giddy and annoying smile.

"Well, they seem to be alright so uh, heads up from now on," Miss Jenn said, laughing nervously at the end.

She ended up making Big Red go and set up the lights, Nini and Ricky leaving to practice the rooftop scene.

"Okay, we just need to nail down the lighting and sound and we've got a show," Miss Jenn said after they had cleared the stage for the scene, "I need some bodies for the rooftop scene, Andy, EJ, can you two help?"

They looked at each other, a weird tension between them but they agreed, standing up there.

All of a sudden, the lights went down and both Andy and EJ screamed as they saw mannequins in neon clothes. They grabbed each others hands, quickly letting go.

"Sorry everyone, my uncle Ruben said there would be some leftover stuff from a fashion show, I guess the theme was 80s rave," Carlos explained, looking over from where he was sitting.

Big Red manages to get the light back up, "Okay, Troy basketball stuff, Gabriella math stuff, nobody doesn't cry and we end up here," Miss Jenn said before sitting down next to Carlos.

"Remember in kindergarten, you'd meet a kid, know nothing about them then ten seconds later your best friends," Andy read from the script. 

"Yeah," EJ said in a deep and weirdly emotional voice.

"Singing with you felt like that," she continued to read from the script.

"Look, I never thought about singing, that's for sure. Until you, and now, I dont want to stop, ever," he said with tears in his eyes.

Andy looked up from the script, wondering what had gotten into him. It also made her wonder if it was her that made him freak out.

"Thats excellent and a little weird. Big Red, can we hit these guys with a spotlight," Miss Jenn asked, staring at them.

"What the hell are you doing EJ?" She asked and he shook his head.

"I'm having a good emotional connection to the character," he whispered, Big Red not managing to get the lights.

"Okay, lets just have to two stand on your marks and gimme your cue again," Miss Jenn said, looking at them.

EJ started fake crying, Andy narrowing her eyes at him as she realised that this was going to be a bad idea.

"I never thought about singing that's for sure, until you," he sniffled.

Everyone in the crowd giggled, watching the scene unfold as it all grew weirder and weirder.

"And now," he placed a hand on her cheek, pulling her in, "I don't want to stop, ever,"

"EJ, Andy, come over here," Miss Jenn requested, the two walking over. She was confused at why he was crying but saw the obvious chemistry between them.

"Are you sick?" Miss Jenn asked EJ until all of a sudden, a giant ladder fell down.

"Okay, everyone take five!" Miss Jenn yelled out as she realised everything was going wrong.

The two friends walked out to the front, sitting there and just talking to each other quietly to pass the time.

EJ sat eating his popcorn, occasionally passing some to Andy who say silently next to him.

Carlos approached, watching the two, "You looked in the auditions files didn't you?" He questioned, the both of them looking up.

When Carlos didn't get a response, he knew the answer, "I tried to warn you. Those were for Miss Jenns eyes only," he explained.

"No problem, because apparently I don't have any emotions," EJ said, standing up, Andy following.

"Sometimes, you do have a way of performing that doesn't exactly feel authentic," Carlos explained to him.

"Then what was I just doing onstage with Andy?" He asked, anger in his voice.

Carlos sighed, "Flirting," he said. He saw how they both looked at each other, the undeniable chemistry and how they read each others mind.

"It felt a bit like an allergic reaction EJ,' Andy stated, glaring slightly at Carlos who just smiled at her.

"Fine, then whats authentic to you Carlos?" EJ asked, basically ignoring Carlos' claim, despite the fact that he kept thinking about Andy.

He walked off, leaving Andy and Carlos to sit and eat popcorn.

She followed after him, the two standing in a hallway, both leaning against the walls.

"You're a good actor EJ," she said.

He shrugged, interrupting her, "But?" He knew there was something else she wanted to say.

She sighed. Andy didn't know the nicest way to tell him so she decided to side with tough love. He needed the truth.

"You need to not seem so disconnected all the time. You need to feel the words," she explained.

"How?" He asked.

She thought for a second, "The line about being friends since kindergarten, it applies to us. We've been friends since I was born," she smiled to herself, "You have to pull on those emotions,"

He stood there for a second. It was true, he just had to think about all of the things that they went through. That's what he needed to do, draw on that.

"Promise?" He asked, holding out his pinky finger, "Promise you believe in me?"

"Promise. I've always believed in you," she said as she interlocked his pinky finger with hers.

Ahhhh! I can't believe someone actually read any of my HSMTMTS posts let along liked some of them! Thank you so much, I felt so validated lol. I totally want friends in this fandom so yeah let's talk about it! It's a good time too, time to catch up int he hiatus :-D

eeep! Ok I'll tell you my HSMTMTS story!

I hated the High School Musical movies when I was little. Everyone was nuts about them and I just didn't get it. (Mind you, I had only seen bits of it at the time) Being an Artsy kid, there was no escaping them. I had to learn the songs in the School Choir, For Plays and in my singing lessons. It was hell. Could be that I wasn't a big fan of Disney. I grew up with gritty British kids TV like Tracy Beaker - so everything I watched on Disney was extremely sugary in comparison.

I did however watch the movies fully when I was alot older, and they weren't as bad as I initially thought, but they still didn't really do it for me personally. Maybe because I'm not the biggest fan of musicals I don’t know.

I was aware of HSMTMTS when it first came out. I had already been told that they were possibly going to do another High School Musical - which turned into a tv show instead. I did initially cringe at the idea but what intrigued me to it was Sofia Wylie (I was a big fan of Buffy in 'Andi Mack') But the clips I saw didn't particularly. 

I saw the Season One Finale moment where Ricky confesses his love to Nini and..they just seemed to be like every average Disney Couple to me. (especially since they were a carbon copy of Troy and Gabriella) Under developed, Cliche, Main Guy + Girl ending up together, Singing while gazing into each others eyes etc.  

I found the scene to be awkwardly co-ordinated as well. The way Nini immediately flipped round, to walking towards him smiling didn't strike me as very natural. 

Generally speaking the main couple of a show shouldn't put a viewer off from watching it if they don't like them, but it does to me a lot of the time. Possibly one of the reasons why I never got into High School Musical when I was little - so the clips I saw of the show didn't really interest me. Josh and Sofia's acting (especially Josh) was the only thing that stood out.

Its only until Season 2 came out that I saw the videos of Ricky and Gina -- I went.."oh hello. "

At first, I was like, this the typical  'plot device' loosing side of the love triangle ship where the girl unrequitedly pines after the guy that chose his inevitable endgame over her - so might as well forget it.  

The only thing that indicated to me in the few music videos and scenes (out of context mind) that I saw that Ricky might have feelings for her too was his eyes. 

Must give props to Josh in the eye acting department, because I feel like he expressed Rickys POV very well. 

I did see their chemistry and all that, but never thought they were ever going to go there because Disney Shows never do with those types of pairings e.g. where its less obvious and cliche. 

The Main Guy does not end up with a girl who was originally supposed to be a side character on a Disney Show. (And lets face it, someone who isn't white passing) That rarely happens. Typically, on those types of shows, especially today, the main characters end up with their 'endgame' from day one and thats it.

I also saw videos of her and EJ and I was like 'no'. Even before watching the show, I didn't find them to have that much chemistry - they just seemed pretty bland to me. 

I heard somewhere by the end of Season 2, they were  supposedly doing a 'Next Generation' in Season 3, and the original cast weren't coming back and I was like 'noo that means Ricky and gina won't happen' I don't know why i thought that.

Then I heard on twitter that the writers were going to explore Ricky and Gina in Season 3, and i was like 'SHUT UP! NO WAY' and my interest in the show peaked from mildly interested to INVESTED SO FAST. 

The show quickly went from (to me) a cheesy reboot to the Deepest Show on Disney.

I then watched the show in context, and honestly it proved me wrong (the show itself was better than I expected) Ricky did have feelings for Gina, but he was scared of them because she was new and also he felt guilty because he was actively pursuing his old gf before he made a connection with her. So as soon as she left, it's felt like to me that he saw it as an easy out and went back to the safety of his old relationship. But when Ricky and Nini got back together, it wasn't about being 'in love' anymore, it was about having a constant or dare I say, "familiar" relationship that he could cling on to because his family was splitting apart and he felt alone. 

And you can see in the Valentines Day episode, that he's clearly freaking out when she comes to his house and if Nini hadn't called, I'm pretty sure he would of got lost in the moment and cheated. Because sure, he loved Nini but what he really wanted was Gina. His attitude towards her in that Season doesn't make sense if you assume he doesn't like her that way. All these comments saying 'Oh Ricky misunderstood Gina's confession' are BS. If he misunderstood her, their relationship wouldn't have been as awkward as it was in that part of the season. 

Gina was the one who cut him out of her life, not him, because she recognised that he was going down hill. Ricky respected that decision and gave her space until she said it was ok for him to start talking to her again. 

Basically, I find them to have the deepest, most realistic bond on that show. It's not a "straight up romance".  It's not flowery or Disney-esque.  It doesn't have a typical A- Z plotline e.g. 'enemies to lovers' or whatever. It's beautifully complicated and 100% genuine. Plus Josh and Sofia's chemistry is Electric man!

just finished the newest episode and my thoughts on hsmtmts episode 5 under the cut

- elton john caswell 

- im glad that instead of making ej cause deliberate drama, it turned into the entire group trying to fake drama only for real drama to surface. i was really worried for a hot minute there they were gonna make ej do something dramatic for cloudt or whatever

- ricky feelings reveal i saw it coming but also i like how it was unwittingly recorded. thats going to come back to bite ricky in the ass later 

- LET CARLOS SAY BITCH SLAP

- carlos’ reaction to finding out maddox and jet were together absolutely sent me. also maddox going along with his crazy story instead of explaining they were actually siblings cracked me up. especially when she had her ”dramatic outburst”

- LOVED RICKYS REACTION TO JET AND MADDOX SIBLING REVEAL LMAO 

- still gunning for eventual jet/ricky even though with every episode i feel my chances of it slipping farther and farther away 

- LOVING the backstory we got on jet and maddox. so it seems like they’ve been siblings since they were kids and used to be super close! i think that maddox might be older since her younger self looked bigger than jet? but i could be wrong. also jet’s musical ballad was sweet. im glad maddox overheard it. i wonder why he got in the way of maddox and madison? was he being protective or felt threatened by someone else being close to his sister? also jet was EXPELLED? BACKSTORY TIME PLS??? why did jet get expelled? i hope that he will open up to ricky at some point next episode.

- also carlos and ricky’s friendship is everything to me

- i feel bad for EJ i know that he shouldve talked to gina about the letter but hes been going through so much. EJ is getting so much shit the season, like forced to be a director, forced to be the frontman on this project with CORBIN BLEU in charge, his father trying to send him to that school. all he wanted was to spend a fun summer with his friends and with gina. really, really hoping EJ and gina get a chance to TALK. 

- also speaking of i wonder who EJ was speaking to on the phone??? my gut wants to say ms jenn. i hope he calls her and she comes and takes over as director and gives my poor boy a break lmao. its unlikely, but i can dream cant i? i doubt it’s nini. i think it’s either his father, or ms jenn. it could be corbin i guess, but i doubt corbin would have even answered the phone, lmao. i think whoever he’s on the phone with is going to help him in regards to the letter drama, so i lean towards it being his father

- maddox saying ashlyn had romantic tension with val just had me shook i didnt expect her to say that. also jet’s comment too was interesting -- “can you stop telling people how they feel for once” or something to that effect? i wonder what the history is there. to be hoenst to me, it doesn’t seem as much like ashlyn is going through a crisis, but with how muck maddox is insisting that ashlyn must like val, im getting the feeling that maddox may be projecting and she might be the one with a crush on ashlyn here... interesting. also the pan to carlos and EJ’s faces after maddox’s comment definitely makes me thinks carlos and or EJ are going to have a convo with her about that which i’m excited for

- also my thoughts on gina and ricky lowkey sofia and joshua have really good romantic chemistry together their entire dance number was so good. reminded me of why i shipped them in season 2 for sure. i dont dislike them together, i do think theyd be a good pair, it’s just so messy for them right now with all this drama. 

- i am sick of the love triangle cliche though, i would love to see ricky have some development that doesn’t relate to romance (a friendship with jet, him and carlos bonding more, ect ect). like the original high school musical wasn’t love triangle either, but this show has def turned into more love triangle just with it being gina instead of nini caught in the middle. i dont dislike portwell or rina though, just interested to see where the story takes them!

- also lowkey bummed that it seems like any comments about a “possible queer storyline” for ricky which was kind of blowing up around the primer of this season is kinda moot. i get they cant spoil anything but it feels like they got my hopes up for the potential. there’s still more season to go, and who’s to say ricky might have a bisexual reveal that doesn’t end in ricky/jet or even ricky/anyone at all? i can still hope. 

- RICKY SLAPPING EJ MOMENT WAS ICONIC 

- love kourtney this episode, too. i wonder if her worry about gina telling carlos about her anxiety will cause tension/a fight between kourtney and gina?? i hope not, i love kourtney and gina and dont want things to be tense there. but it may also make their roles as anna and elsa have a double meaning too (anna helping elsa come out of her shell, gina helping kourtney deal with her anxiety?)

- i did like that ricky went to talk to jet and jet said “i’m not you”. i think that ricky has been thinking about jet as a “ricky 1.0″ ever since they moment when he said “aw he’s like a little ricky”, so i think that moment made ricky realize that jet isn’t actually as similar to season 1 him as he thought.

first off i’d just like to say, i can’t fucking believe season 2 is finally here. after what was it 16? 17? months without this show, we finally get to see what’s coming next. admittedly, it is a little strange considering i’m so used to the characters that we as fandom have concocted over these last couple months. but i’m incredibly excited to see what this season has in store for us. 

since last season some of you liked whenever i posted my thoughts on the episode, i figured i would do it for season 2 as well! plus, i think this is super fun and i like to see your thoughts as well hehe anyways, here are my thoughts on season 2 episode 1 !!!!!

- even though we’ve already seen something in the air i was still so excited to watch it all over again!!!!! each character truly shined in this scene, and i absolutely loved it!

- rini is really that gross/cutesy couple that no one wants to hang around with and that warms my heart and their little montage during the perfect gift i’m CRYING they are all happy and in love and together and i love it

- ricky is truly what so many au’s i’ve read have portrayed him out to be (and i’m not mad about it) but for the love of god, nini needs to communicate with him we’ve done this no communication business before and we already know how that turned out

- i am so excited to see kourtney’s journey this season, of course as well as all the other characters we didn’t quite get a chance to explore last season

- gina and ash as roomies makes my heart swell they both look so happy and gina finally getting a chance to build proper friendships and relationships it’s all i want for her

- i can’t believe ricky’s moving, like i know it’s practical with just mike and him but still, it kinda pokes at your heart

- i will take this to my grave but i think nini would be the best gift wrapper of all time, but yk whatever (also the HSM stickers on the skateboard made me cry PLEASE)

- “you’re my home” it speaks louder when you know the news of what ricky has just learned, and we all know that it goes both ways with them

- “why are you hiding from a handsome man who isn’t wearing a wedding ring” IM CRYING THATS SO FUNNY also loved the introduction of Zack, i’m excited his character and his storyline this season

- the bet on it season i could not for the life of me take seriously !! but props to Big Red for being the supportive best friend (i love him)

- also Red ofc the kiss counts - i am alsoe looking forward to Big Red blooming this season, i want to see him shine and gain confidence in himself and i’m hoping it’s not just for his relationship with Ashlyn but for himself as a person

- ricky was so fucking funny this episode and i’m looking forward to more comedy from him and all the other characters of course

- EJ’s already showcasing how much his life is about to change and i just i sympathize with him in that aspect. its difficult to think that in just a few short months you’ll be leaving it all behind and you really want to embrace every last second of it. EJ’s storyline, with college and finding out who he is, is definitely one i’m REALLY looking forward to seeing

- as it’s obviously evident by blog i am rini shipper, however, that doesn’t mean that i hate on the other ships that get in the way of mine. so, when i saw gina’s reaction when ricky and nini came in together, my heart broke for her. i’m sure many of us have on gina’s end and it’s not fun. and i just hope that she gets to find love this season both in friendship and possibly a relationship

- the hsm2 medley was so cute i loved it !!

- the way nini kinda just dropped the bomb about denver in front of everybody i was shook and not at the same time. i completely saw it coming, but was still quite unprepared! looking forward to the reactions towards it next episode!

the relationship dynamics this episode! not you and zack miss jenn! but the ones in our main theater group! and how they all focus on different parts or tropes of a relationship

nina and richard

i personally think nina being on her own and then that talk with miss. jenn during the snow storm is why she’s become more independent. i can’t remember if they’re sophomores???? but now, at least where i’m from is where they start drilling it into your head that you have a future to think of, it’s time to start being independent and finding what you want to do! and that’s exactly what nina has done for herself, and she loves it! she’s starting to realize not every minute of every day needs to be spent with ricky, or the fact that she needs to do certain things to make him happy (pineapple pizza fiasco) that is great and the love the slow decline of their relationship, cause i could never stand them as a couple. ricky…now i’m not gonna give him a lot of flack (even though i can’t stand him as a character) cause he is struggling right now with so many different variables, but the one thing that is the same (or was) is his relationship with nina! everything has already changed so much between the two of them, and he’s begging for that one thing to stay normal. though i can completely understand that want in life, that doesn’t give him an excuse to be a complete dick half the time as thats (as we can see) tearing them apart faster. (he’s also not that big on communication, unless it’s not with nina) so i saw this tweet and i think it’s really important to hear, as i relate too it a lil too much ricky will always love nini, and nini will always love ricky but it’s okay if they fall out of love and end up with someone else. if i had to give rini a trope, i wouldn’t because i don’t think they really fit into any of them (not even the sad ones) the relationship stage, the last part of falling out of love. if we get anything from this breakup that dear god i hope happens, both should be single!

ashlynn and big red

i love these two with my whole heart, because them and seblos have just been great! especially with communication! them fighting in the latest episode well, it broke my heart. i know i previously said antoine had done nothing wrong! but he has, with hitting on ashlynn (even after she said she was with big red) and then making fun of big red! #notcool! for them, i think this is more on big red’s side, i don’t know if he heard the conversation between the two, but it seems like he did after being compared to every “conventually attractive male” in the show. that would hurt! that would hurt anyone who’s ever has had to deal with self esteem! ashlynn sees this, and even feels sorry for her poor choice of words at the end and does want to talk to him! big red is now trapped in that hole think ashlynn wants something more, which is clear she doesn’t! so looking at the promo it does seem big red wants to just forget it ever happened while ashlynn bringing it up hurts! no trope once more, but i had to be a stage of a relationship, probably, this is one of our first conflicts (they had the one at valentines, but you get it) and i do want to talk but i’m scared. they’ll be okay :)

gina and ej are

after some critical thinking i think i still ship these two in theory, like a au type of thing like they bump into each other in the future when they’re both in college! so yeah! besties for now, lovers in the future! on their relationship, this episode (they’re here cause let’s be real probs is gonna happen, with the current set up) i like that if they were to ever really get in a relationship they’d seem like one with good communication and the one where it just feels like a friendship but with cuddling and kissing. we don’t get much of them but from what we do see, these do clearly trust and find comfort in each other. honest to god last season when we got wonderstudies i really just said “i love a good theater friendship” i didn’t expect a full blown possible relationship. i think in contrast to everyone, because they have this friendship right now with a great bond and #communicationskills something that so many people in this show lack! y’all i can’t stress how important it is!! trope! for them! two! best friends to eventual lovers in ze future and right person, wrong time (in the sense they’d get together in the future

sebbie and carlos

disney said “that’s enough representation for today” after the quinceañero episode. our power couple has once again been put in the background (for the most part, i just don’t expect any major plot lines for them) because we never get much with them (unfortunately) i have no choice but to say perfect

if there are any takeaways from this is definitely just communication (though i know it can be difficult for teenagers, but still very important to at least try) :D this took me like three hours for the sole reason after coming back from work i passed out.

i watched the ep twice bc i didnt take notes the first time BUT. hsmtmts 2.04 thoughts under the cut

gina first. my favorite part of the episode was when she admitted that she feels out of place living in someone else’s house and that she wanted a bigger part in the play. i was SO worried they were gonna just let her happily sideline herself in a “yay she learned her lesson about not being the center of attention” kind of way bc i would not be able to handle that two seasons in a row. let her be angry!!! she has a lot to be upset about

the gina/carlos conflict was awful bc theyre making carlos unreasonably annoying this season. last season he was nice, he was enthusiastic, not competitive and just rooting for other people. idk why they needed to flip him so drastically to being spoiled, rich, selfish, pushy, and bitchy. and on top of that i have not been vibing with the pieces of dialogue theyve been giving him this season just to score woke points. its so unbearably obvious that even though hes a brown gay character, he was written by a white gay person who thought, on some level, that he was giving the gen z kids the #hashtag representation they wanted. his delivery of every line that screams “remember, im mexican” is so awkward, it doesnt land well, and im begging them to stop. they want so badly to commodify his character and parade him around as a “look how diverse our show is!” thing and im so so sick of it bc you can tell, with all the surface-level pieces of dialogue, that they dont actually care at all

(”look around, theres not a lot of me at this school” we GET it, this show wants to be glee so bad)

im honestly starting to slowly ship rina less and less. in season one i loved seeing someone make gina happy, especially since she had no friends before opening up to ricky. but now its just a whole mess and i wish she would love herself a lil more to realize that its not worth all this stress. he made a choice and no amount of conflicted moments of eye contact is going to fully take that back. im not necessarily against love triangle plots, but i HATE the whole “women wait around hopefully while male character, whose decisions have already hurt multiple people, makes up his mind” bullshit

that being said, gina handled the situation like a CHAMP, im dying over how quickly she was able to mask her pain and make the joke about the twix bar. im love her

we were absolutely ROBBED of an ej/big red performance this episode!!! i am at my LIMIT we better get gaston next week or i will riot

on the ej train, him not getting into duke was extremely predictable. we all kinda saw that coming and knew that would be his main point of growth this season. im glad they didnt wait super long to do it. now please @ writers i am BEGGING you to give my man more screen time than one scene per episode

its very odd that they keep making mr mazzara have emotionally tough conversations with the students. i will do a parallel gifset of those once the season ends. i liked his convo with ej for the most part, but he really didnt have to beat him over the head with the “youre an emotionless robot” thing again. its clear ej is gonna throw himself into av club or whatever (even though at the end of last season that was supposed to be big red?) and discover that he has a lot going for him. because he does, he literally has everything going for him, thats why they had to make his “problem” not knowing himself. bisexual ej caswell ftw

i love the parallels between ej and nini this episode? i think since the beginning ive felt that there was a lot about them under the surface that was similar. it was interesting seeing ej tell nini about duke first, instead of the obvious choice of ashlyn. i wouldve loved to see how that scene wouldve gone with ricky, gina, carlos, or big red though bc each reaction and attempt at comforting him wouldve been so different. i didnt love that nini had to be pulled away from the conversation, but im glad they can still talk to each other after everything that went down. and i love the juxtaposition of ej’s convo with mazzara directly following nini’s convo with miss jenn bc theyre essentially the same.

speaking of, i loved miss jenn in this episode. her stories are always so funny, but i loved seeing her care so much for nini and guide her, like a teacher. i loved how she pointed out that everyone who loves nini just wants her to be happy

im glad nini is leaving yac bc there was no good way to keep that up honestly. but im pretty annoyed that they were so obvious about it? like, they immediately made it the worst place in the world without exploring it very much. the place is super unrealistic, ive never been to drama school but im sure it wouldnt be like that. no creative arts place for KIDS would be so impossibly limiting. plus the weird bluish coloring in comparison to the nice warm tones of the rest of the show was, again, a dead giveaway. why send her to the school at all if it wasnt even gonna matter?

even though im glad nini left yac, im NOT looking forward to the way miss jenn is about to bend over backwards to put her in the play somehow. she plays obvious favorites and im so annoyed

(sidenote: nini just? decided to leave yac without consulting her parents??? ummm)

granted is a very good song, one of my faves so far

ricky deciding to tell nini he wants her to stay was stupid. what did he think that would accomplish? who in their right mind would drop out of a good school for you?

i loved when nini said yac was missing something, and miss jenn said “ricky” and nini said “you.” that was so so sweet and cute

i think the kourtney/howie thing is gonna grow on me. i hate amatonormativity so im not a big fan of them introducing a whole ass character exclusively so kourtney can have a love interest, but i loved the gesture he made of bringing her the pizzas and her flashcards. i feel like kourtneys love language is acts of service, and she was literally this meme when he did that for her:

i liked seeing ashlyn try to be there emotionally for gina! i want more of them together

overall this episode was okay. not enough songs, and i wish they were spreading out the emotional conversations through the season instead of packing them all into literally one episode, but what we did get was pretty good.

after watching the preview i see that next weeks episode is gonna be about carlos’s party, and i love party episodes. BUT i hope that after that ep we finally get an advancement on the north high stuff! i dont give too many fucks about lily, but i wanna see my son asher angel

It has gotten really bad. These kids have put everything into this show, even their relationships (both platonic and romantic) and that is how you repay them? 

I didn’t think they would address this, I lost hope after last week but I am so glad they’re going too.

Someone send Seb after Miss. Jenn please, let him rip into her, he would do very well.

Miss. Jenn is supposed to be the role model and she just told a kid to jump off something high.

nina has been a godsend this episode, props to her!

haven’t been the biggest nini fan this season (off and on for me), but she was very behaved this episode. 

if there is anything the east high kids are good at, it’s bullshitting their way out.

I liked the episode. Didn’t love it, but liked it. I really wish we got to see more acting, like we didn’t even see Big Red and E.J go on stage. Not even the iconic yellow dress. Some of the drama is so unnecessary, like why Mike and Jenn? What is with the Kourtney and Howie drama the writers insist on having, can’t they just be happy?

Besides the whole harness incident (burn that harness and mask it is causing so many problems) the production went very well, too well. This is East High we’re talking about.

where... where did all this tension come from? it has been light the past two episodes then bam, everything they say to each other is bitter. since when is seb jealous? the writers have so many other conflicts to talk about and they choose jealous seb? off all thing?!?! im honestly kind of disappointed because there are so many other things to talk about from previous episodes and instead they choose this?!?!?! hopefully this isn’t the only thing that is addressed next week, it cant be. they better talk about the constant “no seb” because its an issue. 

moral of the story is i hope the fight next episode isn’t about seb being jealous bc there is so much more to talk about

Oh wait some cast stuff...brb ima cry. The ending has some very series finale energy...I’m scared. Natalie wouldn’t have done the “buckle up wildcats” if there wasn’t a season 3, right? But the bloopers at the end...

The cast ending was great. “You are the Music in Me” was so heartfelt and I’m a sucker for bloopers.

Wait so no Lily home? It was probably a cut scene. 

If we got Lily home, can we get an album with the cast singing all the BATB songs? 

I have so many mixed feelings about this episode. Here is the thing, if you love the core 4 then this was your episode. If you’re like me and prefer the side leads then this was probably a little disappointing since we barely saw them. This episode felt rushed and a little messy, but there were some great moments. Season 2′s writing has felt a little weird. This season lacked the chaotic theater kid energy season 1 had. It was one of the reasons I fell in love with the show. If/when we get a season 3 I really hope the writers find that energy again.

Let’s all give a round of applause for the cast and crew who filmed majority of the season during a global pandemic. That could not have been easy. They gave us a pretty good season under crazy conditions. They definitely had to change some things to fit the current climate. Overall, hats off the the cast and crew because you guys killed it. 

I’m really going to miss this show, hopefully it gets renewed. It has become a comfort show these past several weeks. My sanity says “no, don’t go” but my sleep schedule says “leave.”
