This could potentially go two (or more) ways:

If he's directly speaking about Belle, he's most likely thinking about Nini. In a way, Nini was his Belle. After Ricky and Nini got back together, what happened to him? We never fully saw that, did we?

However, if he's speaking about new beginnings, is he talking about Gina? I don't know where Gina and him are going. I don't know if the writers are planning on making them a couple but if they are, it would be intersting.

EJ and Gina are "counterparts" to Nini and Ricky. They are juxtaposed to each other and the other couple. It'll be nice to see them go on their own journey and heal.

I beg of all the JATP and HSMTMTS stans to consider Petewell and Caswilson being a product of EJ moving to LA to find himself alright

EJ applies to Caltech in a spur of the moment decision after joining the AV club and what do you know, he gets an acceptance letter

at first he facetimes Gina and Ashlyn every single day, never wanting to admit how alone he feels, it's the first time he hasn't had Ash there by his side and he just doesn't know how to handle himself in a place that's brand new

when he eventually meets Carrie he finally feels like he has someone who understands him. They are so much alike but Carrie will also tell him exactly how it is.

She calls him out when he needs to be but she also supports him endlessly. He tells her about East High and everything that happened and it takes a lot of reassuring her that he's fine now to convince her not to fly to Salt Lake and yell at anyone and everyone. She's very protective of him.

EJ is front row at every Dirty Candy show and he listens any time Carrie just needs to vent about something. He'll drop everything he's doing if he notices her feeling a little off and sometimes it takes some coaxing cause she isn't too used to people wanting to listen just to listen. It's not something she's ever really had before. EJ reminds her often that he's there for anything she needs.

They quickly become confidants. Literally the best of friends.

The only place that makes him feel as comfortable as he does with Carrie is the beach.

It was the very first place he went to after moving to LA on his own. It's a place where he feels free. He stares out into the ocean and realizes there are no expectations for him there. He can finally just exist and decide who he wants to be all on his own.

And yeah, maybe the cute surfer boy with the pretty blue eyes and the long brown hair who says hi to him every time he sees him is an added bonus.

They don't have too many conversations at first. Then one day EJ sees him dragging a guitar case onto his back porch before sprinting inside and then running back out with a surfboard instead and that day they have a rather long conversation about music.

EJ goes home later than usual and immediately spills everything to Carrie with a huge smile on his face. He's got this dopey smile and he's blushing a lot but Carrie less than amused. She finally recognizes who the cute surfer boy is. One Reggie Peters. And she sighs cause there really is no escaping the Phantoms.

When Gina and Ashlyn finally come visit EJ in LA they are just so surprised. Yeah, they talk to him all the time but seeing him is completely different.

And it has nothing to do with the tan skin and swearing that he got taller. He holds himself differently. His smile is more genuine. He doesn't look tired anymore. He eagerly tells them everything and it hits them that he's just...happy. And he never really been like that before.

They had been positive that LA EJ would be different than Salt Lake EJ but they had no idea.

He has inside jokes with Carrie and he doesn't take them to his beach cause he doesn't want them to embarrass him in front of cute surfer boy cause "I think I'm finally getting somewhere with him."

He takes them out to eat and shows them all the projects he's been working on and he's just so excited about everything

OK so East High is one of those schools where everybody knows everyone because they’ve been together since kindergarten

so there is no way in hell you can Convince me that there were not people outraged when EJ didn’t get the lead

he’s been getting leads since his sophomore year probably had the whole lacrosse team in the front row after he won them the game in tru hsm support fashion 

but that also means that everyone’s known Ricky since kindergarten which probably makes them more confused

here’s how i think they would be:

random senior: wait, EJ didn’t get the lead...that hasn’t happened since like elementary school

EJ playing water polo.

His parents didnt come to the game, his family never supported him that's nothing new. But he was playing at his best ability nevertheless and then... then he glances at the stands and honestly what the fuck even.

All the theater kids were there.

Nini and Ricky at the front, a large - rather embarrassing - poster leaned against their legs. Red and Ashlyn standing behind them, Kourtney and Carlos and Seb were even there too.

Seriously what the fuck.

EJ gets slammed in the head by the ball and he can hear Carlos ranting angrily in Spanish at the poor referee from the pool.

He had to blink a few times to make sure they were actually there, that they were all there. Maybe the theater kids weren't his parents... but they showed up and that's worth a lot more to EJ than whatever lame gift store present his parents are going to undoubtedly bring home for him from their recent travels.

Because as much as he hates to admit it... he loved the theater kids. They were his family.

EJ played the winning point at the end of the game. They all went to Denny's to celebrate.
