just breathe, just relax, it'll be okay
in which there's no soundcheck at intermission.
i. hoping that the fire won't burn me (just one time) [gina]
ao3
Gina has spent a significant portion of her life on stage, or preparing to be on stage, but out of all of that, what she did just now has got to be the most impressive acting performance of her entire life. A Night To Remember was her favorite number to rehearse (besides the troyella duets, of course), but she feels like she’s singing through jello during the entire song now. Every time she looks at Ricky, she’s reminded that he’ll never get the senior prom he thinks he’s promised, and it will all be her fault.
Still, she plasters a smile on her face and leans into him as the audience gives them a standing ovation (her mother excluded; Gina hasn’t missed how she’s been at the exit, one foot out the door, this entire time), and once intermission is called, she presses a kiss to his cheek and runs away giggling, the sound high and false in her own ears—
Until she reaches the set of quick-change booths that have become a makeshift dressing room for the girls (their actual room being taken over by designer-gown options for Gina to wear at the press conference tonight, although none of her friends actually know that). Gina immediately yanks her Act 2 costume off of its hanger dashes into the booth closest to her, desperate to get changed and on her way, but the clasp of her current dress promptly gets stuck. Fucking hell, she thinks—or maybe yells, perhaps, given that Kourtney barges her way in a split-second later, her protective gaze piercing daggers through Gina’s skin (though if it's meant for her or the dress, one could only guess). Gina pushes past her as soon as she’s decent without another word.
Eyes seem to follow her as she tosses her heels god-knows-where and hangs the white dress back up. “I’m fine,” she tells those nearest to her, glaring at Ashlyn before her sister can offer what she’s sure is sage advice for anyone not about to go and kill the spirit of the one person who deserves a perfect show tonight.
I’ll apologize later, Gina resolves, knowing there’s so much more she’ll have to apologize for anyway. She can’t fathom the idea of going away from any of the people in the room, more a family to her than her own blood for the past year, which is a terrible situation to be in given that she has to very, very soon.
“Ricky’s on his way to his locker,” Emmy informs her as she leaves, and Gina nods, certain the younger girl has no idea why she’s trying to meet him right now but thankful for the information nonetheless. If she sprints, she can get to the actual girl’s dressing room before Ricky does.
They haven't had a chance to talk since the show started, not really, but by the way he's been acting, she's now absolutely certain she knows what he's been dying to tell her all night—and even though the words haven't actually been said yet, the knowledge of what they are is enough for her to know she has to say her piece first. Even if it kills her—kills them.
Fate, for once, is on her side, and she gets to the room with enough time to make it across the counter and take a deep breath before her boyfriend (her heartbreakingly wonderful boyfriend, her absolute favorite person in the world) runs in, still in his prom tux from Act 1, curls wild and tie half-undone with a guitar clutched in his hand. His eyes widen in sheer delight when he sees her (as if they hadn't planned to meet here during intermission) and within a second, he's run across and swept her into a massive bear-hug that lifts her away from the counter and around in the air.
Gina might throw up, and not from all the spinning.
"Missed you," Ricky murmurs, when he's finally put her down again.
You just saw me, Gina thinks, but the words, and the smile that should go with it, get lost somewhere in her throat. With as much strength as she can muster, she manages to resist the urge to fold right back into his embrace, instead stepping back and letting her hands fall down to hold his.
"So," Ricky says, somewhat giddily, but when he meets her eyes, her expression must be so grave that the grin slips straight off his face. "Gi, hey, you okay?" he asks softly, gently.
Gina tangles their fingers together as her heart plummets to the floor. She takes a deep breath, and then another, and then a third, but remains unable to steady herself. She's not ready for this. But that doesn’t matter.
Ten seconds, Gina, she admonishes herself. Ten seconds, then you have to tell him. One, two, three—
She makes it to five before the guilt of it all overwhelms every cell in her body and the words come tumbling out. "Quinn offered a movie—I'm leaving, after the show tonight," she blurts out, and a mere moment later, tears follow. She squeezes her eyes shut, unable to look at him.
His hands slip out of hers. Gina waits, eyes still closed, for the inevitable sound of his footsteps moving away from her and out the door. Instead, a second later, she finds herself pressed against him again, slow circles being drawn on her back.
Ricky holds her as the tears fall, and fall, and fall. She allows herself to collapse against him, wondering what she did to deserve this incredible boy who absolutely doesn’t deserve her.
I can't leave, she thinks; I can’t lose this. This isn’t a new thought for her—it had admittedly had been flitting in and out of her head over the past week—but it has gotten steadily more intense over the day, now taking over every crevice of her mind.
Maddox’s ten-minute warning suddenly blares through the speakers in the room, but all Gina can focus on is the fact that Ricky’s apparently still standing there with her. "You're not—you're not mad?" she asks, somewhat stupidly and against her better judgment.
Ricky shrugs, the skin around his own red-rimmed eyes creasing in a halfhearted smile. "Upset, maybe," he says, "but you," he reaches up to cup her cheek, "You're a superstar, Gi. Of course HSM4 wouldn't be it for you."
That wasn't quite the answer Gina was looking for, and she suspects it isn't the one he wanted to give, either.
I. Don't. Want. To. Go.
"I wanted to tell you," she says quietly, as if that would make it okay, make it any less real. "But the contract isn't signed yet, and Quinn didn't confirm until this morning, and some part of me—" she quickly swallows the rest of the sentence poised on her lips, not wanting to give him false hope; god, she can't do that to him, not after all of this—"I didn't want to ruin your night," she finishes lamely.
Ricky nods. There’s a painful expression on his face, as if he'd been expecting this, mirroring exactly how he did just under a year ago, when Nini announced she was leaving (the first time).
GIna feels terrible.
"So you'll be gone next semester, then?" he asks, cutting into the silence.
"New Zealand," Gina nods. "Six months—” she hesitates, then adds, “I should be back to see you graduate."
"Hm."
Gina regrets adding that part immediately. Who was she kidding? He had tried the whole long-distance thing before, and it didn’t work, so why would he want to do that again? She takes a deep breath. "Ricky—"
Her apology is interrupted by his lips on hers. This kiss is unlike any one he's given her before, simultaneously electric with emotion and so incredibly soft—almost quiet—with the simplicity and ease of the act, and Gina doesn't quite know what to make of it. When they break apart, she just stares at him dumbly. Half of her wants to kiss him again, but the other half is confused.
Turns out she doesn't have to ask, because he explains all on his own. "I love you.”
What?
She must have said that out loud, because he laughs, for real this time, and grabs her hand to flatten her palm against his chest. "See that? Heart, not racing. I've never been more sure of anything in my entire life."
"Ricky Bowen," she whispers, and the Thought from before is practically pulsing between her ears as it rewords itself slightly. Stay here, stay home.
"Gina Porter," he whispers back.
An understanding passes between them, a silent promise. Gina smiles and is working up the courage to kiss him again just when Maddox's five-minute call once again invertebrates through the room, and the moment's over.
"One more minute," Ricky mutters, apparently unwilling to let go of her hand so soon.
"Sorry, Wildcat—you're still planning to do Act 2, I hope," Gina jokes, gesturing to the half of a tuxedo he's still wearing, but lets a note of seriousness enter her voice. Please say yes.
Ricky seems to pick up on it, and he swiftly kisses her cheek, saying, equally seriously, "I wouldn't miss it for the world, Gi."
Home, home, home.
Gina reluctantly forces him to leave, finally, but she would be lying if she said she didn’t melt into the floor when he turns around for a look back at her. "By the way, I got into college. SLCC." He cocks his head shyly. "I'll have to tell you that story after curtain. And sing you my song," he adds, pointing to his discarded guitar still propped up on the counter.
Gina's heart swells with pride, and something else too, but Ricky's bolted away before she can respond. I love you too, she thinks. She can’t wait to say it back to him very, very soon—and repeat it forever, after that.

So I've been working on this thing...an outline that rewrites all of S3 and S4 to have Caswen as the main romance as well as fixing some of my other issues with the series' plot. It is still in the rough stages needing some refinement, but I figured I should share it here too in case people are interested. And I put in the work anyway so...might as well spread the word.
I also made a playlist of all the songs mentioned in the document so that they're all bundled together for easy listening. There's a link in the document, but I'll put it here too for good measure.
If anyone wants to use any ideas from here, since I am probably months at least away from being able to spin this into a full fanfiction, please let me know. A. Because the James Somerton scandal is fresh in my mind, and B. Because if you're writing or drawing or doing anything Caswen, I'll probably want to consume it anyway.

silk!maddox au first look 👀
sneak peek of the first chapter under the cut HEHEHEH (ps... i think i'll be able to work out ao3 for it ??? HOPEFULLY)
“Where the fuck were you?” Nini’s voice jolts Gadget up in their chair, looking above the clock to see the girl stood there with a nosy look on her face.
“In my bed?” She replied, only realising afterwards that it sounded like a question back. She didn’t even know what she was talking about.
“I meant last night, dumbass.” Nini says, voice lowering slightly so no one other than Mad could hear her professional vocabulary. “Me and Carlos were drinking shots all by ourselves-”
Mad rolls her eyes slightly as she places her bag down on the side, scooting her office chair closer to her desk. “Wow… sounds like you had a horrible time, then…”
Nini crosses her arms at her friend’s words. “Mad.” She says, making them turn their head away from the login computer screen. Maddox never even liked computers. “You haven’t answered my question.”
Shit. What was she supposed to say? I was spending the whole night fighting criminals? No. God, she could still feel it when that one guy had kicked her in the stomach. “I was uh…” She thinks again. Nope. Absolutely nothing that she can say to Nini would make sense. I was fighting a criminal known as Black Cat, no big deal Neeners, they think. “Yeah… I forgot.”

Second Chance (HAITUS)
Ricky Bowen x OC
Status: In Progress , On Haitus
Tumblr media
There's gonna be A LOT of those cheesy/cliche tropes and I'm not even sorry.
childhood best friends to lovers
falls first x falls harder
hurt/comfort
one-sided pining
mutual pining
all that fun stuff <3
This is a High School Musical: The Musical: The Series fanfiction that follows Blake Sahan alongside her childhood best friend and first love, Ricky Bowen.
Blake Sahan's faceclaim is Maitreyi Ramakrishnan!
This series loosely follows the plot of the show, each chapter being based on every episode. Of course, (without any spoilers), there's a few key differences...
Characters are aged up.
They're in their freshman year of college.
The school is Salt Lake Community College.
If the college seems like a high school sometimes
(or most of the time)
it's for plot convenience ok just roll with it
Gina does not have feelings for Ricky.
Nini is lowkey kind of in her antagonist era in this.
Ricky Bowen has BPD (unknown at first)
(side note: so does Blake)
I will add trigger warnings specific for each chapter, but here are some general trigger warnings for this series:
Alcoholism
Addiction
Mental health (mainly Borderline Personality Disorder)
Toxic relationships
Poor relationship with parent / absent father
Death of parent
Occasionally some adult themes
DISCLAIMER: The author of this series (me lol) has BPD. Just keep that in mind, I am not stepping out of my place or anything, and please remember that anything I write that relates to BPD is written based off of my own personal experience. 💖
Please like, reblog, give me feedback, all that fun stuff! It really helps to keep me motivated! enjoyyy <3

you thought i was dead? wrong! i was just suffering at the hands of so many consecutive essay crises i forgot how to function
but i'm back and better than ever - 8k words worth of back!!!
if you forgot where we left off, ej and gina finally confronted each other about that summer. now
1. they each know why the other person acted the way they did
2. ej knows ricky and gina have been long broken up, and
3. gina knows ej loved her.
and amongst all that, there's a wedding to plan. easy as pie, right?

Thought of an idea for a Rina fic that I’m too busy to even attempt writing and wanted to share in case someone else wants to take a stab at it:
Ricky and Nini wrote a song together that blew up online and made them famous. Marketed as a duo they wrote an entire album together. After breaking up their label decided to drop Ricky and keep Nini. Forced to find a new label and producer he eventually starts working with Jaime Porter.
Meanwhile Jaime in an attempt to give his little sister Gina some stability for at least the majority of her high school education, becomes her guardian.
Ricky and Gina meet, fall for each other, drama ensues. You know the drill.
Any one want to give it a shot?

just breathe, just relax, it'll be okay
in which there's no soundcheck at intermission.
ii. all it takes is to get it right (just one time) [ricky] (ao3)
Ricky has never felt this amazing on stage before. It’s better than Breaking Free last year, and kissing Gina (on the cheek; EJ-the-director’s creative change) in Frozen over the summer, and even just a short while ago, in a harness without falling and his parents (both of them!) looking on proudly. Yes, this moment, posing through a standing ovation hand-in-hand with the girl he’s in love with and surrounded by all of his favorite people cheering them on, may just be the best moment of his entire life.
He runs offstage and down the stairs, hastily tossing his blazer at a random freshman and undoing his tie as he does so. He knows Gina would want him to get dressed in his Act 2 costume now so they can maximize the rest of their intermission time, but frankly, he deserves an award for the enormous amounts of self-control he exercised to stop from blurting out “I love you” during every scene they had together (which was nearly every scene he had, period), and he might spontaneously combust if he doesn’t see her right now right now right now.
Plus, he’s Ricky Bowen! Would anyone be surprised if he’s a little late?
He waves at his parents and Big Red, who apparently decided to loiter in the hallways, but doesn’t stop to chat; he does, however, pause just enough to catch his dad whispering something to his best friend that makes both men (and himself) grin from ear-to-ear. After making the quickest of pit-stops at his locker to grab his guitar (thank goodness for Ashlyn and her punch-the-door trick), he barrels straight into the dressing room.
The lights are off when he gets there, but Ricky easily spots Gina against the back counter. His feet take off on their own accord (not that he’s complaining), and she’s in his arms within a split-second. It’s been more than a year since the first time he ever hugged her, but the feeling of her pressed against him like this, like two pieces of a puzzle that fit together perfectly, is one he can never grow tired of.
He sets her down only when he starts to feel a little dizzy, and Gina promptly leans her head against his shoulder, steadying them both. Like she always does. “Missed you,” he murmurs, threading his fingers absentmindedly through the end of her ponytail. I love you, he thinks, and almost says it, too, now that it’s finally safe, until he spies his guitar out of the corner of his eye and remembers why he brought it with him. Oh, she’s going to love it, he muses, his chest bubbling. The song may have been composed entirely in his head and mostly during the five-second quick-change in Night To Remember, but it’s pretty much the best thing he’s ever written, and he can’t wait to share it with her.
“So,” he says, bouncing on his heels with excitement as Gina takes both of his hands into hers. He waits until she looks up, wanting to remember every minute of this while he can—but when her gaze finally meets his, the butterflies in his stomach promptly turn to stone. Something’s wrong. “Hey, Gi, you okay?” he asks.
Ricky tries to reach up to cup her cheek, maybe wipe a tear a tear away, but she squeezes his hand tighter to stop him. An unpleasant stillness settles between them, the only sound being the quiet ticking of the clock on the wall that grows louder and more threatening with every passing second.
Gina’s voice comes out as a hoarse whisper when she finally speaks. "Quinn offered a movie—I'm leaving, after the show tonight.”
Ricky’s heart drops to his feet. Leaving? He steps back instinctively but immediately regrets it when Gina’s hands drop from his. She’s pale as a ghost and the palm she’s pressed against her mouth is doing nothing to stop the sobs racking her body.
Be the bigger person, Ricky, a voice in his head tells him. Don’t make the same mistakes yet again. So, he steps forward and pulls her back into him, allowing a little cocoon of safety to surround them, just for a minute. Because what else is there to do?
Ricky had known, as he sat in the background during the first scene they had together in HSM 4—actually, no, he had known that very first day in rehearsals, watching her with Mack—that this was only the beginning of something amazing for her, that someday, he would be cheering her on as she slayed the stage on Broadway or won Oscars in Hollywood, or all that and so much more.
It’s just that he’d always assumed he’d be there, by her side, through it all. Not left behind. Not again.
He knows what choice he wants to make. And he knows the one he has to. He just wishes they weren’t contradicting each other so heavily.
“Ten minutes to places!” Maddox’s voice rings through the speaker in the room, breaking him out of his reverie.
Are you going, too? Ricky wonders. Is Jet? Is Big Red even planning on coming back? Or is everyone leaving me? He shakes his head, dismissing the spiral before it gets out of hand. He’s being stupid and dramatic and he needs to get a grip, damn it.
“You’re—you’re not mad?” Gina asks, and he realizes she’s untangled herself from him, her deep brown eyes watching him carefully.
"Upset, maybe," he blurts, and when Gina’s expression falls, he immediately corrects, "but you—you're a superstar, Gi. Of course HSM4 wouldn't be it for you." Regardless of the circumstances, he truly is so incredibly proud of her, and he lets that feeling infiltrate every bone in his body and shine through him now, masking everything else.
Gina sighs sadly in response, because she’s Gina and she’s always been able to see through him, regardless of whatever walls he puts up. It’s one of the things he loves about her.
Loves. Ricky holds back a laugh, wondering what him-from-half-an-hour-back would think about what’s happening right now.
"I wanted to tell you," she murmurs. "But the contract isn't signed yet, and Quinn didn't confirm until this morning, and some part of me—I didn't want to ruin your night.”
Ricky looks at her, really looks at her, wondering what to say back. He could walk away now and protect his heart a little bit, or he could stay and make the most of the next hour before she leaves forever. Both sound like the worst decision ever.
"So you'll be gone next semester, then?" he asks, finally.
"New Zealand," Gina nods. "Six months.” There’s a sudden twinkle in her eye, so imperceptible he would think he’s imagining it if it weren’t so jarring, as she continues, “I should be back to see you graduate."
Ricky hums nonchalantly, but inwardly, his stomach is flipping in circles as the implication of her words sink into him. Should be back. Does that mean—
“Ricky—”
But she’s leaving, and how—
Bro. It’s now EJ’s voice ringing through his head. stop making decisions for her. Let her in.
And so Ricky does.
He kisses her softly at first—really, he tries—but the intensity quickly shifts from merely reassuring to something so much more, and every emotion he’s felt in the past ten minutes rushes out of him, overflowing like a river without a dam, all of them converging to one little thought. I love you, I love you, I love you.
They break the kiss only when oxygen starts to become a pressing necessity, and even then, it’s reluctant on both of their parts. Gina’s got his absolute favorite expression on her face right now, the one where she’s a little dazed and a little giddy and a little happy, too, and it makes him want to kiss her again. “I love you,” he says, finally (finally!) out loud.
“What?” Gina’s brow is furrowed adorably, but there’s nervousness there, too, like she can’t quite believe what she’s hearing, or not sure if she should.
Ricky laughs and impulsively grabs her hand, pressing it against his chest exactly like he did oh-so-long-ago in the woods at camp. “See that? Heart, not racing. I've never been more sure of anything in my entire life."
“Ricky Bowen,” Gina whispers. Her eyes are shining.
“Gina Porter,” he whispers back.
He knows they have so much to talk about, still, things they need to work through and figure out, but god, if he could freeze in this moment forever, he would.
And then Maddox’s voice cuts through the speaker announcing the five-minute call. Ricky bites back a groan. “One more minute?” he asks, fixing Gina with his signature puppy-dog eyes and holding her palm, where it’s still pressed against his heart, hostage.
"Sorry, Wildcat—you're still planning to do Act 2, I hope," Gina jokes. Her fingers play with the lapel of his button-down (definitely not what Troy is supposed to be wearing for The Boys Are Back), but her smile, though still the most beautiful thing he has ever seen, doesn’t quite reach her eyes.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world, Gi,” Ricky says seriously, hoping the words convey the answer to her unasked question. I’m not going anywhere. I promise.
Ricky can’t help but steal a final glance at her from the doorframe. “By the way, I got into college. SLCC. I'll have to tell you that story after curtain," he says, mostly because he doesn’t want to go yet and she can’t make him if he’s talking. Gina blinks in surprise and beams at him, clearly fighting back the urge to reply, and so he continues, "I'll have to tell you that story after curtain. And sing you my song.”
Gina opens her mouth and immediately clamps it shut again, rolling her eyes at his ridiculousness (he really should be backstage now; Miss Jenn is probably having an aneurysm). Ricky grins and leaves her with a wink.
He’s got the rest of Act 2, and high school, and forever after that with the girl he loves. And that’s all that matters.

The inner Seblos stan within me hates me for making Carlos such an awful person in my current fanfic series (He's really bad).
So... I will be going back to my roots and writing Seblos again in my next fic. Don't know when that will be, but it'll be after Love, East High!
Oh, and when I mean "going back to my roots", Seblos comes back but I'm still gonna be angsty because that's just me :)
S4, you may have attempted to destroy Seblos, but I'll always love them. There was no such thing as a cheating storyline in s4 so I'll just be enjoying my Seblos endgame while all the people on Twitter fight about it (Face it TWITTER STANS, did you guys ever like Carlos before S4? Or did you only like him because of his friendship with Ricky? I can see right through you TWITTER STANS)

HSMTMTS spoilers ahead!
My friend (a Big Red fan) and I (a Seb fan) were prepped to hate s4, so we decided to binge the entire thing tonight to get it over with! I had completely avoided spoilers (and had managed to avoid the seblos duet all this time) because I wanted to see everything in context and like it or not as it was meant to be seen. Luckily, the season left me feeling really happy! I feel like they did a great job of wrapping things up (which I had thought they didn't know it was ending and was expecting a true cliffhanger, so the closure made me really happy!) Most importantly, there were so many things in the eps THAT WERE STRAIGHT OUT OF MY FICS!!! Like my friend was constantly turning to me going "OMG you literally wrote that!" and is convinced someone's been stalking my ao3 account. I just think it shows how much I love these characters and how much I've tried to be true to them in my fics (and can't wait to write more!!)
More thoughts below
I know people will have different opinions about this, but I was so relieved about the Seb/Big Red thing. When Seb said he cheated, I freaked out because I was like "Seb would not cheat!!" But after a moment, I turned to my friend was like "Unless it was with Big Red. I think I'd be okay with that." My friend and I were so upset that our characters weren't going to be on s3 that I wrote an entire fic about Seb & Big Red hanging out over the summer while the others were gone and Seb helping Biggie realize his sexuality. Even though I didn't have them get together in my fic (they just hang out and watch Heartstopper a lot), I felt like I could see them both missing their sig others and accidentally getting together, so I was like "I could forgive Seb if it was Big Red, and vice versa." So when that happened, I felt relieved because I felt like it was truly in-character (while any other "cheating" would be completely out of character). So while I know others have issues with this, I'm just relieved (and glad that it was just a kiss and not actual cheating!) Also, the Natalie thing is hysterical. The very first HSMTMTS fanfic I ever wrote was Seb discussing auditioning for Sharpay with Natalie!! However, the Natalie/Seb thing doesn't work with the timeline because Natalie says in season 1 that she was the stage manager for Brigadoon the year before! But I'm willing to allow that inconsistency since at least we got Natalie in the final season! And I really liked the Big Red and Ashlyn scene (which I know others have issues with). But it was so cool to see that discussion on a "kids show" and to see that they could still be friends. And I loved redlyn, but I really like madlyn and wasn't sure how I was going to deal with a redlyn breakup, but this scene made it okay for me! I have lots more to say but I'm barely going to get 4 hours of sleep as it is so I'll stop rambling here. But I'd love to chat with people about s4 or the entire series! I now want to go and reread all my old fanfic (I've literally written over 380K words of HSMTMTS fanfic) and start writing some new. If anyone else is interested, my fics are here: season 1 season 2 [plus others, but these are in order for these seasons]
One last comment--I never realized that 1) I had so many random scenes AND choreo from HSM3 memorized and 2) I always sing the Troy harmony on all the Troy/Gabi duets! HSM2 is my fave, but I really enjoy 3, too. Oh, and Seb getting to sing along with "I Want It All" from the audience made me feel better about the fact that he didn't get to be Sharpay!!!
