getting emotional over footage of an amateur scuba diver interacting with a coelacanth. they are hunted by large deepwater predators, and here comes a large creature bearing the brightest lights it's ever seen, making strange noises, but it does not shy away. it hovers, calmly, as the diver reaches out and trails a hand down its back. im strongly against the anthropomorphizing of real life animals but the stupid emotional part of me loudly insists this is because it recognizes us, the alternating movements of its four paired limbs matching the diver's four paired limbs, & it is thinking, "hello, cousins, we missed you these 66 million years, it's so good to see you again. welcome back, welcome home."

Most mosasaurs all had very similar body plans: they were streamlined scaly monitor-lizard-like marine reptiles with four rounded paddle-shaped flippers, and many of them also had large shark-like tail fins.
But Megapterygius wakayamaensis here seems to have been doing something a bit different.
Living towards the end of the Cretaceous, about 72 million years ago, in the waters covering what is now western Japan, this mosasaur was around the size of a modern orca, roughly 6m long (~20').
Unlike other known mosasaurs its flippers were huge, bigger than its own head and distinctively wing-shaped, with the back pair being larger than the front. This is an arrangement oddly reminiscent of the unrelated plesiosaurs, and may suggest a convergent sort of highly maneuverable "underwater flight" swimming ability – but unlike plesiosaurs Megapterygius also still had a powerful fluked tail, so how exactly all of its fins worked together is still unknown.
It's also the first mosasaur known to preserve potential evidence of a dorsal fin. Some of its back vertebrae show a change in orientation at the point where a fin base would be expected to be, closely resembling the vertebrae shape of cetaceans like the modern harbor porpoise.

Got sharkdrew on the brain (thank you @sade-of-spades 😌)
Find the mer au masterpost here 💕
I’m issuing a “find the artist” below the cut:
Now maybe I’m just being stupid bc I don’t know how wattpad works but I don’t see any artist credit on this collection, it looks like the person went for a “none of this is mine, all content belongs to the creators :)” 🥲 at any rate this is my immense inspiration here so if the style/art looks familiar I’d love to know who it is

Buick Invicta Sedan Prototype, 1957; production Sedan, 1959. The Invicta was a new model for 1959 that evolved the Century body with Buick's 401ci Fireball V8 engine. The 1957 photograph shows a design proposal with a centrally-mounted “dorsal fin” on the rear deck lid that never made it onto the series production version

February 28, 2024 - Black-backed Thornbill (Ramphomicron dorsale) Found only in the Santa Marta Mountains of Colombia, these hummingbirds live in and around forests and grasslands. They eat nectar, frequently clinging to flowers while feeding, and capture insects in the air or pluck them from leaves. Nothing is known about their breeding behavior. They are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to habitat loss in their small range from deforestation, fires, and over-grazing.
