In Acid, the characters played by Guillaume Canet, Patience Munchenbach and Lætitia Dosch have to flee their homes and become climate refugees in France.
CINEMA – Floods in Greece and Libya, typhoon in Hong Kong… and now acid rains in France. The latter natural disaster is fictional so far, yet Philippot’s Acid is sadly on the agenda. With his feature film, in cinemas this Wednesday 20 September, French director Just Philippot aims to make us think-and shiver-about climate crisis.
Canet and Dosch play a divorced couple with their 15-year-old daughter Selma (Munchenbach), the three of them trying to outlive a climate disaster. Acid rains strike the Upper France and burn everything down: vegetation, animals, car wrecks and, of course, human skin.
For 100 minutes, the film follows the family’s race against time as they seek shelter at all costs, only to be overtaken by the deadly rain. It is a disaster film similar to many others theoretically. But Acid’s realism hits hard.
Acid’s nerve-wracking realism
Philippot did not have the use of large special effects or thrilling explosions, unlike American big-budget films. The film is frightening, for the viewers can easily put themselves in the characters’ shoes, and it could well be set in 2023.
The story takes place during a March heatwave, near Arras, against a backdrop of economic crisis. Michal, played by Canet, is under judicial supervision after a violent confrontation with the riot police at his factory during a strike.
The scenes showing climate refugees fleeing their homes with a suitcase echo those already seen in Bangladesh and Pakistan. Water, which has become toxic, is a rare commodity, and the government is putting in place containment measures.
A doomed youth
Selma is a reflection of the new generation which grew up too fast, due to the climate crisis. At the beginning of the film, she worriedly watches the 24-hour news channels alerting to the acid clouds in Latin America. Her father chooses to turn off the television instead.
Even if they do their best to protect Selma once the disaster has started, her parents are helpless to cope with the gravity of the situation. Some scenes in the film offer a glimmer of hope by showing this parental love, which sometimes leads to sacrifice.

In a race against time, and against the rains, the family must find a shelter.
Outside the family nucleus, there are many brutal and selfish behaviours, despite a few mutual aid scenes. Some let the devil take the hindmost to survive and won’t be selfless. Acid displays a scenario that is as catastrophic for the planet as it is for society.
The eco-friendly shooting wanted by the director of Acid
In his first feature film, The Swarm, released in 2020, Philippot already mixed social tragedy and an apocalyptic outlook by telling the story of a bankrupt farmer who starts raising grasshoppers.
Acid alerts us to the reality of climate crisis, both in front of and behind the camera. At the Cannes Film Festival, where the film was not in competition, he was awarded the Ecoprod France prize, which rewards feature films produced in the most eco-friendly way possible since 2022.
The carbon footprint of the film, and of the film crews, was reduced to a minimum. And even though nature appears completely destroyed on screen, the director opted for digital visual effects to preserve the filming locations, not from acid rain, but from the impact of mankind.
EN · I'm making a big comeback with a translation of an article about Acid. I watched this film at the cinema two months ago; I loved it, but at the same time I'll probably never see it again because it practically gave me an anxiety attack. I have to say that acid rains (which are already happening in poor countries) caused by global warming are nerve-wracking. 🥲

Batman has to choose between his kid and a civilian.
It's a Joker trap, and whoever he chooses will get released. Whoever gets left behind gets dissolved in acid.
Batman is stalling, trying to give Nightwing and Red Robin the time they desperately need to dismantle the complicated wiring that controls the acid vat hovering over the hostages.
When the civilian does something absolutely horrifying.
"Do it, no balls. You fuckin won't."
Joker turns towards the kid.
The kid gives him a feral smile that looks more like a snarl.
"Kiddo, do you have any idea-"
"Everyone from Illinois knows Joker's just a bitch, anyways."
"...Last chance, brat."
Batman shouts at Joker, tries to get his attention, but what gets said next drowns it out even though the kid never raises his voice.
"You also don't know how to tell a joke, or how to take one."
The vat of acid gets released over the civilians container, and Batman is forced to watch a child die in a sacrifice that wasn't needed at all.
Meanwhile, Danny fucking Fenton, after going intangible and invisible, decides that maybe he will stop at a gas station for some taquitos.

8y Dick: ugh, can't believe B thought this was a good idea.
10yo Wally, sad, depressed, scared of his dad, and has no friends because he's the weird kid, looking at Dick like he hung the moon: y-yeah, adults can be so weird like that.
Dick: yeah, I bet you rather be back home hanging out with your friends.
Wally: I don't have any friends, plus I try to be out as late as possible before going home.
Dick, looks at him: why don't you have any friends... And staying out late?
Wally: welp I love chemistry so much I'm labeled the weird kid people tend to stay away, and I don't want to see my dad.
Dick:
Wally, nervous:
Dick: tell me about your chemistry knowledge.
Wally, happy, if had ears and tail of a dog would be perked up and wagging, telling him everything he knows and gifted him some acid to be his friend.
*end of flashback*
Bart: so how do you make friends?
Wally: the fuck should I know.
