🖤I was thinking of a lee know/yn fic in which he’s had a lot of work lately and he’s tired and down, so he and yn plan a picnic for the weekend.
it’s all sunny and good weather when the day comes, but inside lee know it’s a whole other story. he wakes up like he didn’t get a single hour of sleep, his stomach is tense and his head hurts. he wakes up earlier than yn so he makes breakfast, but it ends up being a bad idea to eat it and he starts to feel it come right up. it’s random cause he didn’t feel nauseous before, but after the ordeal he definitely is and his stomach isn’t only tense, but also tender now.
when yn wakes up she notices sth wrong but lee know brushes it off as tiredness. she eats her breakfast and they walk to the park with their picnic baskets. good, cause lee know doubted he’d have made it through a car ride.
in the park the sun is bright and it’s hot which messes with lee know quite a bit, but luckily by the time they have to eat a soft breeze has started to blow, calming him down.
they eat their food, but lee know has a hard time and that’s when he may admit he doesn’t feel good, but at this point he’d rather stay in the park, so they do. yn knows that lee know doesn’t like worry, so she doesn’t act too soft about it but obviously cares.
they end up looking at the clouds with lee know laying his head on yn’s legs while she plays with his hair, trying to make loose braids. they unbraid quickly since his hair is short but it’s fine. after a bit he starts feeling better so they film TikToks and decide they want to roll down the hill and see who gets to the bottom faster. childish but fun.
but then everything goes downhill, literally, cause spinning obviously was a bad idea for lee know and now he can really feel his tummy cramping harshly. they go back to their picnic blanket to try to calm him down which doesn’t work, and he starts to feel too hot and suffocated while trying to stop the pain in his stomach, which is making it hard to breathe. it almost makes him tear up cause it’s bad, and when it gets even worse he can’t hold anything back, and I don’t mean only tears…
p.s: I feel like lee know and yn should be kinda similar, so it’d be cool if you could make her have a bit of a teasing and sassy personality like him.
Dear 🖤, I hope you like this one! I tried my best to make them both sassy 😅

A DATE GONE DOWNHILL
Dating an idol wasn't an easy task, first, you needed to mind where you would have your dates so there were no fans or paparazzi around. Second, his hectic schedule made it harder to have actual dates, like dinner, going to the beach, etc, so usually you would meet him at the dorms or your house. And you two had agreed that he'd sleep there whenever he felt like it since being away from the mess and chaos of the dorm could help him relax a bit.
Preparing for a comeback, his last few weeks were totally packed with schedules, he barely rested or ate. He would call you every day to talk about his day and you would listen to every single word he said and you noticed he was sounding more and more tired as the days went by.
When he got a little break, he was exhausted and feeling down, mostly because he couldn't see you and also due to the stress of not getting everything the way he wanted to. He wanted perfection, but that is a hard thing to accomplish.
You couldn't just sit still and watch him like that, he needed a breather so he could relax a bit and replenish his energy for the next round of schedules.
You thought of a picnic and he agreed with the idea. He went to your house so he could get a good night's sleep before the date, he was tired but he wanted to have fun with you.
Morning rose, the day was beautiful and sunny and you were super excited for the date, it was a real one after so many weeks.
However, things weren't looking good for Lee Know, and from the moment he got up, he knew the day would be a tough one. Even after sleeping for 7h to 8h hours straight, he woke completely drained, like didn't sleep at all. He sat on the edge of the bed and assessed his situation, he was tired, his head was hurting and his stomach was acting up.
He liked cooking, especially for you so he went to the kitchen to make breakfast, despite wanting to stay in bed a little longer with hopes that he would feel better.
He made your breakfast, set it on the table, and then made his. He just leaned against the counter and started munching on the light breakfast he made for himself. But after a couple of bites, he started to chew on it and couldn't quite swallow it. He kept on chewing until it turned into mush and forced it down, and it felt gross. He didn't know why that was happening but he soon found out because as soon as he swallowed, he felt it coming back up.
He turned to the sink, opened his mouth, and let out what seemed to be the last bite he had, he quickly turned on the water to wash away that disgusting thing. He was as surprised as he could get because he wasn't feeling nauseous, he thought what he felt when he got up was hunger but now he understood it wasn't. And as if couldn't get worse, he now could say with 100% certainty that he was feeling nauseous and his headache wasn't exactly helping either.
He held himself against the counter, rinsed his mouth, and then took deep breaths to try to calm down. Thankfully he managed to calm down but now his stomach was definitely feeling weird, he had this thought deep in his mind that his stomach would not be accepting food any time soon. Great, what a way to start the day.
After a couple of minutes, you woke up and made your way to the kitchen and saw the image of this handsome boy wearing shorts and a plain white shirt, simple, but the light of the early morning sun shining through the window made him look ethereal.
You walked towards him, wrapping your hands around his waist and kissing him.
- Good morning, Babe.
- Good morning.
He said kissing you as well. When you pulled away from the hug, you immediately noticed his expression wasn't looking too good.
- Are you okay?
You said, looking him in the eyes.
- Yeah. I'm just tired.
- Couldn't sleep well?
- I did but the week's been pretty packed so I'm still tired.
Lies. But he hoped you'd buy that excuse, the last thing he wanted was to worry you and ruin this so-anticipated date.
- Okay then.
- I made you breakfast.
He said, still holding your waist and pointing towards the meal set on the table.
- Thank you, sweetie.
You sat down and started eating your breakfast, Minho sitting in front of you, just admiring and patiently waiting for you to finish.
Once you were done, both of you changed into light comfortable summer clothes and finished setting everything inside the picnic basket.
The park you chose was not too far from your house so you decided to walk there and enjoy the scenery together.
Minho was grateful for your choice because even though he was feeling a little bit better he knew a car ride would have the worst outcome.
The walk to the park consisted of both of you complaining about how hot it was and how it felt like it was burning you alive.
Finally arriving, you two found a nice spot next to the lake and underneath a big tree, which meant you'd have a nice shade for your picnic.
Since you just had breakfast, none of you wanted to eat just yet, and Minho preferred not to eat all. He was feeling better when they left the house, but the walk under the sun and just how hot the park was, had messed with him. His head was hurting and honestly starting to throb, he was feeling a bit lightheaded, and his stomach was acting up.
Shit. Will the date really go wrong? He thought to himself, but he still didn't want to tell you about it, even though you had already picked up.
- While the sun melts us off our bones... Let's chat for a bit.
He said with a tone of sarcasm and a smile that just made you laugh. The way he managed to say such things and then put on a soft, but also almost menacing smile after was amazing.
- Why are you laughing? Am I funny?
- No. It's just the way you said it
- Oh, so I'm not funny? Okay, I'll remember this.
- Oh stop, Babe!
You said laughing and shoving him, earning a cute laugh.
You two talked, while the sun did indeed melt you, but you two made an effort to not talk about work or it would stress both of you, and your goal was to help Lee Know to get his mind off work.
You really wanted to enjoy the picnic, but it was scorching hot, not even the shade was doing much. The extremely high temperature was still doing its number on Minho, his head was throbbing and the sunlight wasn't exactly helping, he was starting to feel nauseous and worried if he'd manage to eat something or even just enjoy the date. When a sharp pain stung his head, he flinched a little and it caught your attention.
- Honey, what is it?
- Nothing, just looked at the sun and my eyes hurt.
- You didn't bring any sunglasses, did you?
- No.
- Here, put these on, and see if they'll help.
- Thanks.
It did help a bit, but everything else was still annoying him, yet he was in his decision to not tell you anything.
After a few more minutes of chatting, it was about lunchtime, so you started to organize the food you had brought.
Fortunately, the sun was hidden by some clouds and a light breeze cooled both of you down and relaxed Minho, who was tense at the thought of having to eat.
- Let's eat!
He had helped you prepare everything the night before, and both of you were good cooks, so it was safe to say the food was delicious. You were really excited to try everything, now Lee knows, not so much. Just the sight of everything and all the smells mixing together circling around him because of the breeze was making him start to feel sick again. He took a deep breath in and grabbed something to eat.
While you were enjoying and savoring every bite of everything, Minho was having a hard time swallowing the tiny bites he was trying to eat. He'd take a bite and chew until it turned into a tasteless paste, which made it even harder to swallow, he almost gagged a few times.
Surprisingly, he managed to eat a few things but they didn't taste as good as he'd wished, the same process of chewing it and trying to swallow repeated, and then his stomach sent him a warning, telling him that was enough food.
He was almost regretting eating at all when his stomach started to feel really full and off, the food obviously not sitting well. The feeling was so annoying he couldn't quite hide it anymore.
- Honey...
He said quietly, fidgeting with his fingers while looking at you, who was still enjoying your meal.
- What is it? Are you done eating?
You asked with a certain tone of surprise, noticing he didn't do as much as he usually did.
- Yes...I don't feel good...
- What is it?
- My stomach...
- Do you wanna go home?
- Not really, between staying at home and here. I'd rather stay, it's cooler here.
- Alright.
He took a few sips of water and hoped it wouldn't mess with his already sensitive stomach and it didn't, thankfully.
Since the sun was still hidden, you two decided to watch the clouds and just try to get rid of all the stress you'd been feeling.
He lay down on your lap and you lower yourself to kiss him, making his heart skip a beat.
- I like that.
He said with a beautiful smile, extending his hand to touch your cheek and tuck your hair behind your ear.
- I love you.
- I love you too, honey.
You reaffirmed, mimicking the gentle gesture. He closed his eyes and focused on the breeze and your presence, trying to relax every fiber in his body and enjoy the moment.
- Babe?
- Hm?
- Can I braid your hair?
- Only if you make me look pretty.
- Don't you trust my skills?
- Your hair styling skills? Nope.
- Minho!
- I'm joking.
He laughed. You proceeded to make tiny braids in his silky hair but they'd get undone as you went on, but he seemed to be enjoying it so you didn't mind.
Your touch and the light breeze that was still around, helped him feel a bit better, not 100% but enough to enjoy the date a bit more.
- Babe, do you wanna film some TikToks?
- Why? As long as it's not a challenge...
Since TikTok got famous, it became a trend to do challenges of every music that came out, he'd be lying if he said he wasn't a bit tired of it.
- It's not. I just wanted to film this moment. We don't get to go on many dates like this, so I wanna make memories and cherish them.
He smiled at you and got up, and then you set the phone so it would record. He stood out his hand and asked:
- Will you grant me this dance?
- Of course.
You said blushing and taking his hand, he pulled you closer to him and kissed you before starting the dance.
You two were so lovey-dovey, that if it were any of the other members with their s/o, Minho would be teasing them non-stop.
When you decided to do other dances and asked him to teach you some moves, he started teasing you, but you wouldn't let it slide.
- Woah, since when you were so bad at dancing?
- What? I'm bad at dancing? Are you sure you're not a bad teacher?
- I'm the best teacher out there, you're just not a good student.
- Of course, I am! Get off your high horse, Mr Lee Minho. I actually learned some of your choreographies by myself, and they were perfect. Admit it, you're not a good teacher.
You said crossing your arms and smiling menacingly at him.
- Alright, touché.
You recorded a few more videos, dancing together and just laughing and enjoying every single second, and then you had an idea.
- Say, why don't we roll downhill, and the last to get to the bottom pays for dinner?
- Deal.
Minho had no idea why he agreed so quickly, knowing that doing that would probably be the last straw, and boy, it was.
You were enjoying this date like a kid and Lee Know wish he could say the same, it was painful to see you so happy while he couldn't share that with you.
- Ready?
- Ready.
- 1, 2, 3 go!
You started the race and as Lee Know was going down, everything inside his stomach was rolling around as well, it was revolted and angry at him, to say the least.
You got to the bottom faster than him and started to celebrate, but then you noticed that something was definitely wrong, Minho wasn't just tired.
When he reached the bottom, he immediately got up so he was kneeling on the grass. He grabbed his middle with one hand while the other helped keep his body steady, his stomach was cramping really badly and its contents were still swirling around.
- Honey? Are you okay?
- No...my stomach is killing me.
- Let's go back up, come on.
- Can you help me?
- Yes.
You went to his side, put one of his arms on your shoulder, and wrapped yours around his waist helping him up and guiding him up. The pain was bad enough for him to walk up while hunched over, arm still holding his stomach.
- Here we are.
You gently helped him sit down and grabbed a water bottle, handing it to him.
- Try to drink slowly.
He tried taking small sips but it wasn't working, his stomach was cramping without giving him any break. And to add to his misery, the sun was out again and it seemed like it was hotter than before.
- It's too hot...
He complained, fanning his shirt, suddenly his clothes felt tighter against his skin, like it was trying to suffocate him. The air around him felt hot and he couldn't breathe properly, so his breathing was erratic and he was almost hyperventilating.
- Honey, I need you to breathe with me.
You were now getting worried about him having heat exhaustion.
- Honey, you have a tank top underneath, right?
- Y-yes-.
He said weakly, trying to regulate his breathing. You knew he wasn't comfortable with being shirtless, especially in public, as you found out early in your relationship, that he only felt comfortable enough with you or the members.
- Then take off your shirt, it'll help you feel less hot.
He took it off and you placed a cool ice pack you had brought, on his nape. But the discomfort was too much, it wasn't only the nausea or the heat but also the pain in his stomach and the fact that he was ruining the date you were so excited about. It was getting so unbearable he started crying silently.
- Minho? What's wrong?
But he didn't answer, he was too focused on breathing through the nausea and the pain, you noticed his distress and grabbed his hand, trying to ground him.
- I'm right here Babe.
He squeezed it so tightly it almost hurt you, but you didn't mind, as long as it could help, even if just a little bit.
But his stomach decided it had enough, it started cramping even worse as if punishing him for stupidly agreeing with rolling down a hill.
When got really quiet, focusing his gaze on the ground, not moving a muscle.
- Minho?
You barely had the chance to ask anything before he gagged one time and turned around so he wouldn't soil the blanket. He coughed up a thick stream of partially digested food and you could see pieces of the lunch he just had.
You placed your hand on his back and started rubbing it up and down, while still holding his hand. He had his eyes squeezed and a painful expression on his face, as another bout of vomit gushed out immediately followed by another that left him out of air.
- That's it, Babe. Just get everything that's bothering you, out.
His stomach cramped again, making him lurch forward, arching his back painfully forcing out another wave of putrid vomit.
He was feeling so embarrassed that you had to see him like this. The fact that he was the second oldest in the group made him build a wall around him, a wall that only you and Chan could walk through.
For a moment his stomach gave him a break, allowing him to breathe and only making him spit out thick saliva from time to time.
Thank God there weren't that many people in the park, you knew he'd be feeling 10x worse if there were people looking at him.
- Here honey, rinse your mouth.
He rinsed his mouth and then took very small sips, afraid that whatever made its way in would immediately make its way out. You wiped his mouth, and his forehead which was dumped with sweat, and helped him sit back for a while and see if the nausea would ease a bit.
- There we go.
- I'm sorry...
- You don't need to apologize honey.
- But I ruined our date and you were so excited about it.
- You didn't ruin anything. We had fun, didn't we?
- Yes but look at the mess I made.
- Honey, I knew you looked off this morning but I didn't say anything out of respect for you. I know you don't like us getting worried about you, so I decided to just wait for you.
- I appreciate it.
- Say, why don't we go home so you can take a shower and rest? It's getting too hot in here and it won't help you.
- Yes, please.
- Alright. Just let me get this organized first.
You packed everything inside the basket and then walked up to Minho.
- Honey, can you stand? Or are you feeling dizzy?
- A bit dizzy...
The heat along with the ordeal of throwing up everything he'd eaten made him feel weak, he just wanted to go home but he was afraid of collapsing and worrying you even more.
- Just...give me a minute...
- Of course.
You sat down beside him, placing the ice pack on his neck again.
- Take deep breaths, babe.
You said as your other hand rested on his chest, trying to provide him as much comfort as you could.
He grabbed your hand and tried breathing along with you. After a few minutes, he felt well enough to try to walk home.
You helped him up and wrapped your arms around him.
- I'm sorry...
- Minho, stop apologizing, please. Let me know if you feel faint or if you wanna throw up again, ok?
- Yeah.
He was completely exhausted, all his energy had been drained from his body and he was still feeling too hot, it was still difficult to breathe properly. He was a professional dancer, he was an idol, he had to dance and sing at the same time and yet, today, this short walk home was making him insanely tired.
His vision was swaying and his stomach was acting up again, the last thing he needed was to vomit in the middle of the street but his body didn't give him much of a choice.
- Honey...I'm gonna be sick
- There's a bench over there, come on.
You guided him to the bench and gave him a plastic bag that was inside the basket. He grabbed the edges and burped a few times before vomiting what felt like his guts, the sound of it hitting the plastic made you grimace a little.
He didn't take a breather before retching again, bringing stomach acid and water.
- Babe, I don't think you have anything left to vomit.
You took the plastic bag and disposed of it, then you gave Minho some water to rinse his mouth again.
You helped him up again and the rest of the walk back home didn't have any more accidents.
Getting home, he went straight to the shower, wanting to get rid of the disgust he was feeling from throwing up.
When he walked out, face a little red because of the sun, you had already gotten the bed ready so he could properly.
He lay down next to you embracing you, eyes still watery and extremely vulnerable, which was a side of him everyone rarely witnessed.
You embraced him back, placed a kiss on the top of his head and didn't say a word, respecting him. Just holding him, and rubbing his back as he cried, you didn't need to say anything, you just needed to be there and you were.
Minho could be mistaken for a cold person, but deep inside he was a warm person who cared for everyone before himself. He could be the second oldest, but he was Chan's precious dongsaeng and your most cherished soulmate.

________
You didn't know what else to say, feeling ashamed. Who cared about your family circumstances? Definitely not Steve Rogers, a man you met just a couple of weeks ago and who knew nothing about you. Why did you say something like that in the first place?
You didn't wanna look at his face and see him feeling guilty because he didn't know how to comfort you. You didn't need to be comforted. You didn't need anything at all. It was just a simple cold, right?
Despite that, you suddenly started talking from beneath your blankets, "I have a younger brother. When he was born, we found out he was having severe asthma. His childhood was terrible, he had constantly been sick, I remember him being in and out the hospital all the time. Of course, because of his condition, my parents spent most of the time with him. He was just a little sick kid."
You hated yourself for talking, for showing something to Steve he shouldn't have known because he wasn't your friend, but you couldn't force yourself to stop.
"On the other hand, I am lucky to have good health. I didn't really got very sick, so, well, I didn't need help like my brother. So, I'm used to taking of myself. I'm a big girl, I don't need my mom to dance around me just because I have a cold."
Of course, you didn’t. You were perfectly capable of taking care of yourself, and even of Steve didn't show up, you'd be alright by yourself. You'd just take your acetaminophen, and then everything would be ok.
You kept silent, staring at the inside of the blanket and wishing Steve would just disappear, leaving you to your misery. You didn’t see his face, and you were glad you didn't. What he must think about you? That you were craving for his attention like a spoiled kid? Shit, it was so embarrassing. You were an adult, for goodness sake!
"I don't know about you, but when I had a flu sachet, it would make me fall asleep really quick. And when I was feeling sleepy, I would start thinking about the things I loved most because I hoped I would see them in a dream." Instead of feeling ever more ashamed, you listened to Steve's soft voice and thought you were lucky it was him being here with you now. "It actually worked, and I have been having my best dreams when I was asleep, sick. What are the things you love most?"
Surprised, you looked up at him and saw the most gentle expression on a face of a guy you had ever met. Why did he look at you like that? Why was there no pity on his face? Why was it making you cry like you were a ten year old kid? Before he could see anything, you hid beneath the blanket again and kept silent for a couple of moments to calm down.
"I love lemon pies my grandma used to make me, and her garden. She had tomatoes and cabbage and strawberries that smelled like summer. I loved watering them nearly every day because I thought I was a little forest witch who lived in her pretty cottage in the woods."
You didn't know why you were telling him this, but Steve has a strange effect on you. Or was it cold? You had no idea, but it didn’t really matter. All you were thinking about was the way fresh tomatoes smell when you'd leaned down to water them, and the sound of bees flying above strawberry's flowers. Your grandma was taking care of her cabbage - a very capricious guest in her garden - and you could hear her working, cursing grandpa for making the patches too wide in that funny voice of hers. Then she'd stood up, wiped the sweat with the back of her hand, and called you to come back to the cottage because if was time for dinner. You'd run to wash your hands in a barrel of water near the big apple tree when grandma didn't see, and soon you were sitting with her, eating her famous cabbage soup and then having a piece of a lemon pie because you worked so well today.
You could almost feel the taste on the tip of your tongue.
By the time you woke up, Steve was long gone: it was the middle of the night, and instead of him you saw a thermos with a still warm chicken soup on a chair, waiting for you. He sent you a message that you could call him at any time of the day - or night - and that he wanted you to have a bit more sleep to get better. After you had a few more sips of his soup, you fell asleep again, feeling warm and fuzzy.
_______
The weekend went fast. It was the first time in several years you spent so much time in bed. Steve kept appearing at your door from time to time with a new bags of food despite you telling him you had your own, but he always insisted you should it something fresh and warm. Surprisingly, he wasn't the only one at your door: Thor suddenly showed up with his whole team, bringing you notes for the upcoming exams they collected altogether, apparently. Loki sent you a message if you needed anything, and Peter left contacted you on Instagram, leaving you links to games you could play so you wouldn't feel bored. Even Bucky gave you a call, asking if he could come and give you a few packs of Neo Citran for your cold, but you kindly refused: Steve literally brought you a yearly supply of this.
It was strange. Of course, when you were in high school, your friends grew worried about you when you had been sick, but there was nothing else to it. Wasn't it always like this? Nobody came to see you. Nobody brought you soup or gave you meds or anything. Despite feeling embarrassed, you realized you actually liked it when somebody was close to you like that. It was comforting seeing Steve popping up and not having to worry about how pretty you looked: he laughed when he saw you getting all shy because you were in your pyjamas. He said he definitely didn't expect you laying on your bed in an evening gown.
Before you realized it, you were already getting better. It was just a cold, really. Soon your throat was no longer sore, and while you were still sneezing, your temperature dropped down to normal, so on Monday you were ready to come back to school as planned. Funny enough, you no longer cared if you passed your exams, having 100%. You didn’t talk about it with Steve, but Peter was laughing like crazy about that when you told him.
Funny. They no longer looked so scary to you. They were just a couple of boys, weren't they? Regardless all those scary rumors and stuff, they were just guys. Maybe they were weird and stupid and a little bit scary because you didn't know them, they were still alright. Thor said it to you, didn't he?
Monday was Bucky's day, so, once you were done dressing, he nocked at your door: you were feeling a bit shy, watching him in that leather jacket and torn jeans he kept wearing the whole year around, apparently. Barnes looked like a teenage girl's dream. He smelled like cigarettes - although he said he was trying to quit - and pinewood. Just like Thor, he liked to skip classes he didn't enjoy much, but he was smart enough to pass the exams. Funny enough, he had a motorcycle.
Again, you wondered how come girls weren't coming from a city on a bus just to go see him.
"Are you sure you’re feeling better?" He asked you softly. "You can stay home today."
"No, no, I'm perfectly alright, thank you! How are you?" Smiling, you closed the door and hid the key in your bag.
"I'm good, thank you."
He didn't speak much, but as you walked in silence, you thought it was comforting - not talking at all and feeling good about it. While Bucky looked like a scary biker, in fact, his calm and friendly demeanor only helped you relax around him. Besides, it was funny how students seemed to give him way whenever they saw him, and you thought if Steve was the King, then Bucky was the Knight.
Before you went into the your classroom, he suddenly stopped you, "Listen, I wanted to say I have your stuff."
You blinked, "What stuff?"
You didn't give him any of your stuff. Actually, after Steve gathered you all in the student council room, you only met Bucky this morning for the first time.
"The stuff those freaks took. Your... your clothes, I mean." He muttered under his breath, and you gaped at him.
Your underwear. He found your bra and panties those guys took from your room.
"Wait... how?" Staring at Bucky who, apparently, was feeling a bit embarrassed talking about it, you thought how on Earth he got those things.
There was only one way he could, right?
"Bucky, was it you who beat those guys?"
It took him a couple of seconds to turn his face to you and then sigh, "Yes, it was me."

"Weird Secret Friends" *Chapter 2*
Tumblr media
Part 1
Part 3
Y'all IDK what it is about this story but I can just write and write and write. This one ended up being 11 pages [on a google doc] And I only stopped because it's 2:15 am.
I hope you guys like this, but I just want to clarify: This isn't a Barisi fic. I'm sorry, if you're looking for that, just...this isn't it. I mean they do interact and it'll be fun, but they will not be ending up together.
That being said, enjoy this new chapter! I'm debating on how pathetic enamored Sonny is, I don't think I'm gonna go that deep. No worries, people.
As always let me know if you want to be added/deleted off the tag list!! <3

"Y/N, I'm so happy for you and Barba. You make the cutest couple," Sonny beamed at you while you were wrapped in Rafael's arms, huge smiles on all of your faces.
"Thank you Sonny, that means so much." You gave him a warm hug.
"Yeah….and you'll make the cutest couple in HELL!" All of a sudden Sonny pushed both you and Rafael off a cliff.
You were falling to your death when you woke up to your professor glaring at you.
"Have a nice nap, Miss Y/N?" He scowled at you.
"Um," You cleared your throat and straightened up at your desk. "Yes sir,"
"Good," he huffed as he headed to the front of the classroom once more. "Maybe now we can continue without your snoring,"
You heard the students around you snicker at his comments as You sunk lower into your desk and waited for class to end. It had been a long train ride home and then a drive to your apartment last night, you hadn't gotten home until around 2 am and had this 8 am class. As soon as the professor dismissed your class you booked it out of the class and out into the parking lot of your community college.
"Ugh, could this day get any--" before you could even finish your thought you got your answer. Your phone beeped with a text from Rafael:
RAFA: Hey killer, how's the bullshit county? 😉
That was the nice thing, then just as you were about to text him back your phone lit up.
SONNY BOI CALLING
"Shit!" You hissed to no one. "How does he know?!"
"Ahem….Heyyy, cuz," You answered it with your best nonchalant voice. That of course sounded totally chalant.
"Hey sunshine," His voice sounded relaxed, thank God.
"What's up?" You tried keeping your tone light as you neared your car.
"Well y'know I was just thinkin, I feel real bad about standing you up last night,"
"Oh, Son it's no big deal really," the fact that he felt guilty about anything made you feel even more guilty.
"No, I know you have a busy schedule and it takes a lot to get into the City and I just blew you off," He kept on with the guilt train.
"You didn't blow me off Son you had work. I get that--" You unlocked your car and got in, starting it so your windows would thaw. And your whole body.
"Well I wanna make it up to you," He cut you off.
"Oh?" your voice fell short. This couldn't be good.
"Yeah, my boss-- well he's not really My boss but Mr. Barba--"
Oh shit. Barba? Was Barba having a party? Why wouldn't He tell you that? Wait why WOULD he tell you that? Stupid. Wait, what was Sonny saying?
".... birthday, so you could be like my date," you caught the tail end of his invite.
"Birthday?" You repeated like a parrot. It was Barba's birthday? Oh god. You were really trying not to focus on how old he was. Don't ask. For the love of god don't say it Sonny.
"Yeah don't worry you don't need to get him anything, I got it covered," Sonny assured you.
Well, that was one way you could figure out just how much your cousin cared about his "idol". The more expensive the gift, the stronger the feelings were. You wondered whether you should ask him now or wait for the surprise. Maybe you should ask now, then his answer should tell you what you'd be getting into.
*So what did you get this 'non boss' of yours?" You asked slyly.
"Oh," now Sonny's voice dropped. "Well I, I don't wanna say,"
Fuck.
Don't panic. Do not panic.
"Oh come on Sonny," you did your best to keep a joking tone. "What am I gonna do, tell him?"
Should you joke about it? Hidden in plain sight, right?
"No I guess not, it's not like you know him,"
Whew.
"It's just kinda embarrassing…."
Oh god.
"O-Oh?" You tried to stay calm. "Why's that? Is it a gag gift?"
Please be a gag gift.
"Actually it's a new briefcase," He replied.
"Oh why is that embarrassing you goof?” You gave him a hard time. What was that in the emotional baggage department? Pun intended.
"I mean, it's more expensive than the one I own," You could hear the shrug in his voice.
Fuck. Don't ask why. Don't ask. But if you don't ask, that will be even more suspicious wouldn't it?
"Oh Son," You asked softly. "Why would you do that?"
"Well the one he has is as old as dirt, I think it's probably the first one he ever bought. I wanted him to look snazzy in court." He replied with a super eager tone.
"That's sweet," you were pounding your steering wheel in frustration. Say it.
"Seems like a lot of work for a mentor though," You closed your eyes mentally killing yourself.
"Yeah well," he laughed uncomfortably.
Say it.
"Sonny…” You didn’t want to do this.
“Yeah?” He was oblivious.
“You know you can always talk to me,”
“Yeah of course,” He assured you.
“About anything,” You scrunched your nose.
“Yeah I know, sunshine,” He half laughed.
“ANYTHING,” You reiterated
There was a long awkward pause.
“...Sonny?” You made sure he hadn’t hung up on you.
“Yeah, I'm here,” He replied softly.
“So?” You waited for the bomb to drop.
So…. He sighed. "I just want him to like me,"
Dammit.
"....Yeah," You nodded, cursing yourself.
"Yeah, its stupid. I'm stupid." He laughed again.
“You're not stupid,” you laid your head on the steering wheel in shame.” I mean the heart wants what it wants right?”
“What?! Oh my god, Y/N,” He scoffed. “I'm not gay,”
“….Sonny it's 2021,” you shook your head. “Sexuality is a spectrum,”
Right well. He laughed defensively. "I'm on the p in the v scale,"
“Ugh, Sonny,” you made a face.
“Sorry sunshine,” He apologized. “I just...why would you even think that?!”
“Uh…” You paused.
Maybe he wasn't fully aware that he had romantic feelings for Rafael. If you started pointing out the signs, he might realize it. But then you'd have a cousin going through gay panic AND then finding out it doesn't matter anyway.
"No reason," You lied.
"I just want him to like him so he'll give me a good recommendation once I graduate Fordham Law,"
"Oh" you smacked your head. "Duh. Right. Of course,"
That was completely legitimate. Maybe you had been misreading this whole thing. Now you just had the whole overprotective Gotti side of Sonny to worry about.
"Well I guess I could spend the weekend in the city," You shrugged as you pulled out of the parking lot.
“Absolutely!” He exclaimed. “My couch is always open,”
Not exactly where you were thinking of sleeping, but you weren't blowing your cover over the phone. Wait, maybe you should. Then he couldn't kill you over the phone. Wait, he's presumably at work right now. You didn't know how closely he worked with Barba, but you figured it would be a hell of a lot easier for Sonny to get to him before you could stop him from killing Rafael.
"Sure sounds good. I'll see you then cuz,” You smiled and hung up the phone.
------
Friday arrived, and you once again found yourself standing outside Forlini's. You debated heavily whether to go in or not, but you told yourself you were going to wait for Sonny outside this time, no more risking a sexy bar rendezvous.
You hadn’t really responded to Rafael’s texts the last few days, and you certainly didn’t tell him you were coming. Maybe you should have told him. You grabbed your phone to text him when you heard a familiar voice behind you:
“Y/N?”
You spun around to see Rafael dressed to the 9’s, smiling at you. He smelled delicious, mixed with the food aroma wafting out of the restaurant and the smell of freshly fallen snow in New York City.
“...Happy Birthday, Counselor,” You bit your lip nervously.
“W-What are you doing here?” He stared at you as if he thought he was dreaming.
“Sonny invited me,” You nervously smiled.
“Seriously?” He laughed.
“Seriously,” You nodded with a laugh as well.
“Did-- did you say anything to him?” He asked you worriedly.
“Are you insane?!” You hit him. “No!”
“So why did he invite you here?” He asked.
“He said it was to make up for ditching me the other night,” You shrugged.
“...The irony,” He smirked.
“Mmm,” You nodded with an amused smile.
“Well this is a very happy birthday indeed,” He smiled, pulling you closer into his coat similar to the night you had met.
“....Just don’t ask which one it is,” He warned you while staring at your lips deviously.
“Deal,” You nodded in agreement before he pulled you into a hungry kiss.
“DUDE!!” You snapped back before his lips were on yours for more than a millisecond. “Are you nuts?! Sonny’s gonna be here any second!”
“It’s my birthday, carino,” He made a pouty face. “Don’t yell at me,”
“Oh lord,” You rolled your eyes. “Alright, man child,”
He was about to go for another sneaky kiss when you both heard a voice from behind you.
“....Sunshine?”
“Oh!” You jumped ten feet away from Rafael when you turned to see Sonny standing there with a huge gift bag, staring slack jawed at the two of you. “Sonny! I um, we--”
“I was teaching your cousin a lesson in New York safety,” Rafael talked over you, his face completely stone. God he was a good liar.
“Excuse me, counselor?” Sonny raised an eyebrow, glancing between the two of you. You just stared in speechlessness.
“She was standing on this curb holding her bag out for any miscreant on these streets to just wrestle away from her, I was just demonstrating how,” He gestured to your open purse.
“Barba I really think this ain’t that kinda neighborhood,” Sonny half laughed.
“...You never know,” Rafael shrugged. “Now let’s all get inside, I’m sure everyone is anxious to start celebrating me,”
You and Sonny both rolled your eyes with smiles; too similar of smiles, you noticed. Thankfully, he did not. You both followed Rafael back to a private room where a bunch of fancy dressed people were mingling with drinks in their hands while two long empty tables stood in the middle of the room. They all stopped and clapped when Rafael walked in.
“Oh, for me?” He feigned surprise and humility.
“Yeah right Barba,” A woman laughed sarcastically. “You’re the one who invited us here,”
“Touche, Rita,” Rafael smirked as he began making the rounds around the table greeting everyone.
“So are we allowed to eat now, I’m starving,” An older man asked.
“And I’ve got a son waiting,” A red headed woman chimed in.
“Right, right,” Rafael nodded as people began to take seats. “Sorry everyone, you know I love to make a dramatic entrance,”
“Oh trust me we know, Barba,” Another man called. “Your catwalks into the courtroom prove that. I think we have a montage of them,”
“Ha Ha,” Rafael rolled his eyes, then turned to you and Sonny.
“Sonny,” He put a hand on his shoulder. “Why don’t you sit next to me?”
“R-Really, counselor?” You saw Sonny’s eyes light up like Christmas tree lights.
Fuck. You knew he was only asking him so that you would sit next to him as well. And while you loved the idea, you knew how much this was toying with Sonny’s feelings.
“A-Are you sure, about that Mr. Barba?” You gave him a look.
“Absolutely, Miss-- I didn’t catch your name?” He played it so cool.
“Y/N,” You held out your hand as you re-introduced yourself.
“Right, well--” He shook your hand then turned his attention to Sonny who was still beaming like a kid on Christmas. “I don’t know how much Carisi has told you, but he is quite the promising mentee of mine,”
“....R-Really, Rafael?” Sonny blinked in disbelief, causing Rafael’s smile to falter for a moment. Sonny had never called him “Rafael” before, it was always “Barba”. Shit, maybe he had given him too much praise.
“I mean, you know, for a lap dog,” He quickly added with a snarky tone and a smirk.
“Mr. Barba!” You tried not to raise your voice at the birthday boy. “That is my cousin you’re talking ab---”
“No, no it’s fine Y/N-- th-that’s how we work isn’t it, counselor? He just gives me jabs, I know he doesn’t mean it,” Sonny laughed nervously, staring at the floor. He knew not to get too comfortable with Barba, why did he even try it?
“Indeed,” Rafael nodded in agreement. “But, I still request you sit by me-- at least I know you don't poison my food. Which is more than I can say for many of my esteemed ‘guests’,” He eyed the tables of people before him.
“Then why invite them to your party?” You quirked an eyebrow.
“I get that Jersey doesn’t have the social classes of Manhattan, Miss Y/N,” He smirked. “But here, you’ve got to do things to keep up appearances,”
“Oh do you?” You practically growled.
“Yes,” He nodded while a waiter brought him a glass of scotch. “Even if you don’t like someone, if they serve a purpose for you than you do what you must to keep in their good graces,”
“Oh is that so? So you’re only kind to people who can ‘serve’ you?” You crossed your arms and narrowed your eyes at him.
What kind of Danny Zuko bullshit was this?! This was an entirely different Rafael Barba you had met the other night. He was kind, flirty, endearing. This new Barba was snarky and condescending, and you were not amused at all.
“Y/N, chill,” Sonny hissed at you. “This is just how Barba is, he’s harmless,”
“Yeah well you might not mind being his doormat Sonny, but I sure as hell won’t be,” You angrily stomped off.
“Oh my god,” Sonny muttered, wondering if he should run after you or not. “Barba, I am so so sorry about her,”
“It’s fine, Carisi,” He watched you stomping away, trying to hide the guilt in his voice. He was just trying his best to throw Sonny off the trail. He may have overcompensated just a tad.
“I-I should go check on her, She’s just a kid--”
“No, allow me,” Rafael put a hand to Sonny’s chest. “It was my faux paux, I should apologize to her myself. I was being a bit of an ass,”
“Yeah but that’s just you, Barba,” Sonny chuckled, trying not to blush at Rafael’s hand on his chest.
“True, but I forget not everyone knows me as well as you do, Carisi,” And now he was trying to be extra nice to Sonny to get on his good side, while cluelessly egging on his feelings.
“That is very true,” Sonny laughed even more nervously. “I’ll uh, I’ll take a seat and get our drinks ordered,”
“Excellent,” Rafael smiled at him, probably one of five times in the entire time they’d known each other. He gave Sonny one more pat on the back before walking after where you had stomped off to.
He found you right before you hit the front door, his hand catching yours before it could grab the handle. You turned and scoffed at him, your scowl still present after stomping off.
“Oh, come to appease me, counselor? How can I be of service to you?” You snapped.
“Please, Y/N,” He gave you apologetic eyes as he pulled you closer to him. “I’m sorry, I just-- I didn’t want Carisi to think anything was off. He already caught us being handsy, I had to make it look like we disliked each other,” He explained.
“Oh I think you’ve done that above and beyond, jackass,” You huffed. “First I’m too stupid to not get robbed in the city, and then I’m too uncultured to understand ‘high society’ manipulative bullshit?”
“I’m sorry, I may have gone a little over--” He started.
“But that wasn’t even an act, was it?” You interjected angrily.
“What do you mean?” He asked you curiously.
“Your line of you having ‘use’ of a person? I assume that is why you have a room full of powerful people you dislike as opposed to a room full of sycophants?” Yeah, you might just go to community college but you knew big words too.
“I mean, that is how it works--”
“Jesus Christ,” You shook your head with a laugh. “You know I understood for about half a second why my cousin is so infatuated by you, but I am losing that belief real quick,” You turned and started to walk away again.
“Y/N come on,” He grabbed both of your arms this time and pulled you close into him, your noses almost touching.
“Look I’m-- I’m sorry, that I’m---this,” He gestured to himself.
“But that’s just how I have to be in their world,” He gestured back towards the room. “I’m telling you, it’s a room full of sharks. If I show weakness or misstep in decorum, I’m nothing but chum to those people,”
“The guy you met the other night, that’s the real me,” He put a hand to your cheek. “I never get to be that guy, not in public. That’s why I was so attracted to you,” He put his other hand on your waist.
“I don’t have to be ‘Rafael Barba, the snarky ADA with a silver tongue,’ I can just be…’Rafa’,” He gave you an earnestly sad smile.
“I’m sorry,” You blinked in confusion. “I know I’m not helping myself but what exactly is the ‘ADA’?”
Your question brought that familiar amused grin and a laugh. “See, this is what I’m talking about,”
“Oh yeah I know, the ignorant girl you can placate--”
“No,” He put a finger on your lips. “The earnest, normal, gorgeous girl,” He kissed your forehead. “I’m sure if we took a poll in here right now the majority of the room would be with you, not knowing what an ADA is,”
“Which still doesn’t answer the question,” You pointed out.
“I…” He tried to think of a way to explain his role in the Manhattan judicial system. “Well, the DA of the county is like-- the King of Lawyers in that section. Or queen, as my boss is Rita,” He shook his head with a laugh. Oh Rita Calhoun, the stories he could tell about her.
“So, you’re her king?” You raised an eyebrow.
“Eh, I’d say Prince but she’d probably say Jester if she heard this metaphor to be honest with you,”
“Mmm I like that,” You finally let yourself smile at him.
“A Prince?” He grinned.
“The Jester,” You gave him a tongued smile, settling against his chest.
“Well, I’ll gladly take that title if it makes you happy,” He kissed your forehead. “I’d do anything to make you happy right now,”
You looked into his green eyes, they were now their usual sparkling green hue, and you remembered very quickly how you had gotten yourself in this mess in the first place. He really was a sweet, charming, gorgeous guy. And then you remembered those were probably all the reasons Sonny fell for him too.
“Ahem.” You straightened up and stepped out of his grasp. “Well, what would make me happy right now is getting back to my cousin,”
“Oh,” Rafael’s eyes softened into a sad gaze.
“Rafael, I think he really likes you,” You bit your lip with guilt. “And you toying with him just now isn’t helping!”
“Toying with him?” Rafael’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion? “I wasn’t toying with--”
“Sit by me, Carisi? You’re important to me, Carisi?” You imitated his questions in a mocking tone.
“I had to ask him that so you would--” He started to explain, but you already knew.
“I know!” You stopped him. “I know, that’s why it’s so fucked!” You put your hands over your face.
“Carino…” Rafael walked over and pulled your hands from your face and held them.
“I’m hurting him every second that I stand here with you, and I--” You bit your lip trying not to cry. “I’m still doing it! I can’t walk away!”
“So don’t,” He squeezed your hands with an even sadder look.
“This is just--” You broke free from his grasp once again and wiped your eyelids. “We need to get back before Sonny comes after you,”
“....So where does this conversation leave us, then?” He asked you cautiously.
“I don’t…” You gazed into his puppy dog emerald eyes. “I don’t know, I don’t want to think about it right now, okay?”
“Fair enough,” He put his hands down in concession. “...But we really need to--”
“Yeah, I know,” You nodded softly as you walked back to the private room, Rafael trailing behind you.
All you could think on the way back was how in God’s name were you going to make it through the rest of the night.

I don’t need it
Wilhemina Venable x FemReader
Words: 2,8K
warning: eating disorders, angst i guess
A/N: I have no idea what this is but I needed to get out of my head. Please, please don’t read this if you think it could trigger you.
*Also, I read something similar on here but couldn’t find it, so if you know, pls tell me so that I could give them credit.
Tumblr media
It wasn't enough. The truth was, it was never enough. No number ever seemed right anymore. Each morning you were afraid to weigh yourself, knowing it determined how your day was going to go. For the past few months, the only thing on your mind was weight loss and how you looked. You couldn't focus on anything else, you found it hard to be your positive self and most importantly, you were losing yourself.
You were losing yourself again.
You were not sure how many times this has already happened, but you knew what was going on. There was no reason to try to prevent it though, you felt like you needed to lose a few pounds anyway and saw no harm in doing it this way. Or more accurately, you chose not to see it.
“Y/N baby, I'm leaving” your girlfriend's voice coming from downstairs brought you back to reality. Not realising how long you've been analysing your body in the bathroom; you ran to the front door.
“Still in your pyjamas?” she said while giving you a half-smile. Wilhemina herself was looking as professional as ever, given that it was just 7 AM. She had her hair up, makeup on, and was wearing one of those purple fits that you loved on her. Each morning she amazed you by how good she looked. You leaned in to give her a goodbye-kiss which she gladly returned.
“Have a good day. Love you” you said while getting a hold of her one free hand. She gave it a light squeeze before saying “I made you coffee. I love you too.” And just like that, she was out of the door and you were alone.
You stood at the doorway for a couple of seconds, deciding what to do today. You had a few online classes that day but they only took up half of the day, leaving the whole afternoon to yourself.
You went into the kitchen to get your coffee, trying to be as quick as possible. You didn't like being there anymore, it made you feel anxious and guilty. Although, for the majority of your relationship with Mina it has been nothing but nice; you loved cooking dinners for her every day to make her relax and talk about what kind of day the both of you had had, you loved having slow Sunday mornings there. But none of that hasn't happened for quite a while now. Avoiding meals equalled constant lying; on the weekend you’d sleep in since your energy levels were constantly low, and most days you’d lie to get out of eating dinner. You would say that you had to study for a test, had an assignment due or simply that you had already eaten by the time Wilhemina got home.
All of these thoughts were flooding your mind from just standing in the room. You quickly grabbed the cup and left to go into your home office.
Your classes began at 8 and by the time noon arrived you were done for the day. You couldn’t focus on anything your lecturers were saying, which wasn’t uncommon, but this time it wasn’t just the fact that you were exhausted that kept you from paying attention. You kept thinking about how your relationship was slowly starting to fail. You and Mina were in love, but the truth is, your lies were undermining the trust between you two. Until your relapse, you had never lied to her and that’s why she knew that she could always count on you. But she started noticing how distant you were getting and how little time you wanted to spend with her; it hurt her, but she decided to just play along and pretend like everything was fine.
You were aware of all of this. You knew you needed to fix this but sadly enough, you didn’t know how to do that. There was no way you’d be willing to eat - the fear was too overwhelming for you. That’s why you decided to do the next best thing - a quick fix.
The first thing you came up with was a visit at work. There was a high risk of catching your girlfriend taking out her frustrations on one of her poor employees, but the only thing on your mind at that moment was making Wilhemina feel loved. You were mad at yourself for neglecting her because you knew that she deserved way better than that.
Tumblr media
You got dressed and made your way to Kineros Robotics, stopping along the way at her favourite coffee shop. You had worked at the company a few years prior, so you knew most of the people by name and knew the place perfectly.
“Hey Jenny!” you greeted your former co-worker with a smile once you’ve made your way up to the front desk. “Y/N! What are you doing here?” she said while looking away from her computer. “Oh, I’m looking for a woman and thought she might be here. You may have seen her actually; long red hair, very kind, the same height as me… Does that ring any bells?”
“Was she wearing purple by any chance?” she asked jokingly.
“You know what? It is possible! How’d you know?” you answered and gave her a toothy smile.
“Try her office Y/N/N. But just a warning: she screamed at me today for letting in a delivery-guy, so she’s probably not in the best mood,” she said while pointing you in the direction.
You knew this was your fault; she does get snappier at work when she's worried about something. So, not only are you two miserable but others get screamed at more frequently. Maybe a quick fix wouldn’t be enough this time, but it was the best you could do for now.
You arrived at Mina’s office to find it empty so you hesitantly made your way down to the guys’ office. It didn’t take long for you to hear muffled voices, one of which belonged to the woman you were looking for, and you could tell that she was upset about something. Upon entering the room, you saw her; she had her back towards you and was supporting herself by the cane in her right hand. Just this image alone was enough to make your heart race. Jeff and Mutt were bending down to sniff what seemed like their daily dose of cocaine. There were also two girls sitting on a table near them, probably just random hookers the guys hired for the day.
“No, no, no, that’s not what I said. What I meant was, that you should watch your temper more” Mutt said loudly before turning around to start typing on his keyboard.
You saw Wilhemina tighten her grip on her cane, “Excuse me?” she said in a cold tone, clearly getting ready to argue.
Jeff stood up after attempting to clean the powder from his nose, “Come on babe. You know you could be nicer to the employees”.
“Shut up Jeff,” you said sternly, making all the heads turn in your direction. “You’re paying her to do all the work around here that you are too lazy to do yourselves, not to be nice to people.” You could see the surprise on Wilhemina's face, but it didn't take her long to regain her composure and protectively reach for your hand once you've reached her side.
Jeff smiled at you and said “Y/N! Long-time no see. Have you finally changed your mind?”
You haven’t seen the two idiots for a couple of months, almost making you forget how gross they were. You took a step forward and stated “I wouldn’t touch your slimy dick with a two-feet pole,” which made both of them laugh slightly. “I'm here to put you in your place since you obviously still need to be reminded,” you continued giving them a cocky smirk. You knew they would not budge, but it was a nostalgic way of entertainment.
“Wow, you don’t have to be so rude baby,” he said pretending to be offended, “Seems to me like Ms.Venable has a bad influence on you.”
Oh, it was on. You were ready to shoot another remark but were stopped by your girlfriend’s hand giving you a squeeze and lightly pulling you back.
“I would choose my next words carefully if I were you; you’re on very thin ice,” Mina said while staring at Jeff. She would normally avoid confrontation with them but her possessive side got the best of her in that moment. Softening her expression, she turned to face you, “Would you wait for me in my office? I need to sort some things out.”
You nodded and turned on your heel to leave. Hearing Jeff shout at you “The offer still stands!” made you turn once more and say truthfully “Hope your brain turns into mush soon, asshole.”
Once you were out of the door and far enough that nobody thought you could hear them anymore Mutt started the conversation, “Damn Ms.Venable, are you even feeding her?” which made a look of confusion appear on Wilhemina's face. “Now, what’s that supposed to mean?” she asked with a hint of offence, trying to find an answer in the face of one of them. Since Jeff was the one who knew you the longest, he decided to explain, “Oh don’t tell me you haven’t noticed anything,” still seeing the puzzled look on his secretary’s face, he went on, “For fuck’s sake, don’t you live together? You must have noticed the weight loss, plus Y/N is never very subtle about this.”
That’s when it clicked and Wilhemina finally understood what Jeff was implying, “She's never subtle? This has happened before?”
She waited impatiently for an answer, hoping that all of this was just a sick joke; the other two exchanged a look of mutual understanding and Mutt finally said: “You should talk to her.”
You paced around the office trying to figure out what to do and how to fix this situation. You knew that Mina was hurt and probably even disappointed; you knew her instinct would be to build her walls up again and you were terrified she wouldn’t let you fully in again. Once you heard the sounds of her cane getting closer, you knew there was no preparing for this.
She entered the room with a somewhat disapproving expression on her face, which she successfully hid when you shot her a warm smile, waiting for her to sit in the chair while you leant on her table. Sitting down, she looked at the cup you were nervously playing with and narrowed her eyes at you. “I thought you might need cheering up today, so I got you your favourite,” you said while placing the coffee on her desk. And you could swear, at that exact moment, you saw love light up her eyes, and the slight smile she offered you gave you butterflies, just like the first time you saw her smile like that. The silence between you that followed made you play with your fingers anxiously but after a while, it was broken by Wilhemina's soft voice, “Well thank you. I appreciate it.”
“But that's not the only reason I stopped by. I've finished all my work for the week…” you traced off preparing yourself to say the latter part, which you'd much rather avoid, “So I thought that I could cook dinner for us tonight because I haven’t done that for a while now. And I wanted to ask you if there was anything you’d like.” At that point your heart was beating so fast you were sure she could hear it.
She could see how uncomfortable you were but wasn’t able to pinpoint the reason for your behaviour; she didn’t know whether it was due to your relationship hitting a rough patch or because Jeff and Mutt might have been right. Either way, she knew she’d find out tonight; playing it cool she kissed you on the cheek and told you that it was completely up to you.
Tumblr media
Cooking the food was fine, calming even, but once it was done you realised that you actually had to eat it which caused you to panic. You tried to calm down but your eating disorder made that almost impossible. You sat at the table for what seemed like hours trying to come up with an excuse, eventually deciding to just drink wine and lie if you were to be questioned.
You were disturbed from your state by the door opening and your girlfriend coming into view. She locked eyes with you instantly. You could tell that she was exhausted, that wasn’t anything out of the ordinary after all, but there was more tonight. Wilhemina hasn’t been able to concentrate on anything else than you for the rest of the afternoon. She analysed the situation, her potential steps and their outcomes for the whole ride home. What scared her the most was the fact that in both scenarios, she was running a risk of losing you.
You were both tense, expecting the other one to start a fight and unable to relax, so you only made small talk. You sat at the table with your glass of wine, playing with the food on your plate while watching Mina observe you closely. Then the tension got too much and she barked out, “Aren't you going to eat?” in a tone so cold, it reminded you of the times you worked for her. She held eye contact with you, almost daring you to lie to her. Almost daring you to start a fight that would break her heart. You quickly answered, saying that you ate right before she came so you were pretty full. Keeping your eyes on her face, you saw her expression change - she went from being irritated to being seemingly sad in a matter of seconds.
“Do you still love me?”
Once the question left her lips, there was no taking it back and it physically hurt you that she had to ask. It hurt to know that Wilhemina felt so abandoned by you, she actually thought you were going to leave her; and judging by the look in her eyes, she was ready for you to say “no”. Wasting no time, you answered, “Of course. Of course, I still love you, Mina.” hoping to sound genuine enough for her to believe you. You watched her closely, waiting for her reaction, but to your surprise, her feelings were shoved back down just as quickly as they surfaced.
She straightened her posture before stating, “Well, in that case, we need to talk.” You felt yourself freeze, knowing exactly what was about to go down.
“Have you been eating?” she asked, not letting you drift your eyes away from hers. You knew she’d catch on eventually and call you out, but you had hoped you had a little more time. With a confused expression on your face, you said, “What do you mean?”.
Wrong answer. Wilhemina was tired of your bullshit and you trying to hide it from her. Her face seemingly hardened as she explained, “I haven’t seen you have a meal in weeks. You’re always making excuses, saying you’re too busy to sit down with me. The two idiots even implied this isn’t the first time this has happened.”
You knew there was no point in pretending anymore, so not caring about the consequences anymore, you snapped, “Oh, so it took Jeff and Mutt telling you everything for you to notice? Good to know.” You got up to leave but the sudden sound of Mina’s cane hitting the floor made you stop in your tracks. “Sit your ass down,” she ordered through gritted teeth. Seeing how mad she was getting and how her knuckles whitened, you thought it was better to obey. Although Wilhemina liked establishing dominance, she very rarely raised her voice at you. But this was different, she was pissed that you refused to take care of yourself and she knew she had to be strict.
“Y/N, eat. Now,” she demanded in a stern tone. You were sitting down, fork in one hand and anxiously pulling the skin on your leg with the other. After a few minutes of silence, she reached for your hand under the table and with a pleading look in her eyes, she said softly, “Baby… please, try. For me.”
You couldn’t stand seeing her like this, so you hesitantly started to eat. You hated it, and the feeling of food in your stomach made you sick. Wilhemina rubbed slow circles on your hand in an attempt to calm you down. Despite her effort, tears started to fall down your cheeks about halfway through the meal, but you still managed to finish everything.
Seeing the plate finally empty caused you to sob uncontrollably. Mina approached you quickly and put her arms around you, pulling you into a tight hug. In between sobs, you whispered, “I hate you so much right now.” In response, she said, “Shhh, I know. I know,” while stroking your hair.
“You did good, little one.”

Tumblr media
this wasn't what kuroo pictured for his weekend with you in miyagi, but he couldn't complain at all. your head rested on his thighs, while he bluntly caressed your hair, focusing more on your face than in the movie playing in your tv. he could see your eyes closed and feel your relaxed breaths, you fell asleep a while ago, not even ten minutes into the movie, but he hadn't had the heart to wake you nor start the promised conversation between you two.
when he arrived to your apartment, you were obviously hangover. yachi was nowhere to be found, instead, a yellow post-it disrupted in your bedroom door.
"i left some food for you in the counter, let me know how it goes with kuroo!!! ily xx.
–yachi"
if it weren't for kuroo, you wouldn't have noticed it. turned out, hangover you was much like a baby, and even though kuroo felt a little anxious for the unspoken topic, he couldn't stop thinking how cute you were. he liked taking care of you, no matter the situation, it was something he discovered so long ago, that now it came a natural for him.
you moved in your place, about to wake up, scaring kuroo enough to remove his hands from you.
"keep going, feels nice" a shiver ran down through kuroo's back, maybe it was your raspy, sleepy voice, or the fact that you longed his touch, or to have you so close. the variables were endless, because every single one of your actions unchained an explosion of reactions inside him. "what time is it?"
"i don't have my watch, but i think around four?" you eyes shot open, as you suddenly remembered the reason why you were with kuroo that exact moment.
"we had to talk" a soft smirk blossomed in kuroo, making you sink in regret. dumb you, thinking you could spend the whole day cuddling when there was something to be done, something both of you needed.
your phone vibrated, showing a notification from tsukishima, bringing all your forgotten worries back. for a moment, you forgot about your split emotions, about that damned decision you couldn't bring yourself to take. it must've been pretty obvious you were falling into a rabbit hole, at least to the boy in front of you, because his arms quickly wrapped you in a tight, reassuring hug.
"stop overthinking everything, this doesn't have to be an stressful situation for you... nor me” you laughed at his lats comment, easing a little bit of the tension gathering in your shoulders. “do you want me to go first?” he asked, always one step ahead of anything you could think.
“could you, please?” kuroo finally let go of his grab, making himself more comfortable in your couch, urging you to mirror his movements.
after a long sigh, which seemed like he assembling the needed strength to say whatever he was about to say, he spoke.
“i think i’m in love with you” you heart race at the statement, being so straight forward wasn’t like him at all, so it caught you off guard. not that you could’ve prepared to hear that, even with all the anticipation in the world “no, i’m sure of it. i’ve been for a while, well, a while as in years... this is not coming as i thought it would”
the night before, kuroo lied awake for more hours than usual, alone with his thoughts, trying to convince himself he was capable of confessing his feelings. it wasn’t the first time he was in that situation, as a bad joke, he remembered looking at your face, talking about your first kiss with tsukishima, while his love confession got lost in the tip of his tongue. he didn’t have the heart to break off your fantasy, bringing you a unnecessary problem. he never needed to kiss you, or call you his to be happy, he was content with being by your side, even as your best friend. his old self couldn’t come to terms with the fact that he actually had a chance with you, that his confession wouldn’t make you sad or uncomfortable, but you reciprocated his feelings. maybe not as hard as he did, but in some level. and kuroo was sure he could make you fall in love with him as much as he did with you.
“before you transferred to karasuno, before tsukishima, when it was just you, me and kenma. it started as a silly crush, you were so pretty and nice, and basically the only girl i knew, so it caught feelings rather quickly. i think i was nine the first time i saw you that way, but i fell hard after, when i started highschool and wasn’t able to see you as much as i did before.” kuroo took a break to pass his hands around his hair before looking at you, listening carefully at every word that left his mouth. you looked beautiful, hangover and everything, his heart raced at the urge to catch your lips in a kiss. he couldn’t, not right now, but he wanted to so bad.
“you never told me...” his smirk disappeared, what made you think you said something wrong. kuroo shook his head towards you, looking you straight in the eye. you knew why he never told you, you could make your own assumptions. he probably didn’t want to disrupt your happiness with tsukishima. it was exactly as akaashi said once, kuroo always put you before himself. “tsukishima” you said, more as a loud thought that anything else.
“exactly. don’t get me wrong, i love tsukki, he is a great guy, but i always thought i was better for you. when i saw how happy you were, i thought that i might’ve been wrong, that maybe you were meant to be with him, but after your break up... i would never, y/n, never make you feel like that.”
“i know, tetsu...” kuroo sighed, preparing himself for the worst. maybe he didn’t have a chance, maybe you were going to reject him after all those years. “i can’t decide right now, i like you so much, but-”
“but you like tsukki too” he smiled once again, regaining his trust in himself. “that means i still have a chance, right?”
“are you willing to-?”
“there’s nothing i wouldn’t do for you, angel” your heart raced at an insane pace, in the heat of the moment, kuroo leaned towards you, cupping your face in his warm hands. if your phone hadn’t vibrated, you wouldn’t have had the strength to pull away.
“i’m going to show you what’s like to be in love with kuroo tetsuro”

Our Family Unplugged For 24 Hours. Here’s What Happened.
Tumblr media
Back in September, our thirteen-year-old son finally got his own room. We converted the playroom by dragging in his bed and desk from the room he used to share with his little brother. The new “bedroom” still has bins of Legos and Thomas trains and action figures hidden in drawers, and it’s still painted a cheery bright teal, and he let me keep yesteryear scribbly artwork up, and it doesn’t quite fit his current cool, detached teenager image - but it’s got a TV and it is His Own Personal Space.
From which he hardly ever retreats.
This is the first thing. The fact that we have for all intents and purposes, momentarily “lost” contact with him. It’s normal, I know this - normal to want to burrow away and figure things out in solace, normal for someone who is 13 and looks 16 and is wracked with evolving feelings and changing body. I get it.
But this new room, and this new kid (who is now taller than me) got me missing things. Missing how things used to be before we walked around with devices in our hands. Because the truth is we are - all four us in this house - burrowed away in our own Personal Spaces. Eyes down, time wasted, hours spent scrolling, clicking, forwarding, deleting. Even the ten-year-old who doesn’t have a phone, has an iPad and access to a computer - and so while we still play board games, and eat dinner as a family, watch movies together sometimes - the cold, hard truth is that any leisure time to spare is time spent alone, in some corner, staring down at a screen.
So when I came across Tiffany Shlain’s new book “24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day A Week” it was like a plea, a dare, and an answer all rolled into one. The next day, I called a family meeting.
“We’re going to implement a Tech Shabbat. We are going to unplug for twenty-four hours. No iPhones, no iPads, no computers. ALL of us. We will have a landline, a list of phone numbers to call people if we want, and one TV to share, in the family room.”
The ten year old was excited.
The thirteen year old cried.
He shed actual tears, and his reaction - fear, confusion, desperation, fury - further cemented my decision.
Yesterday was our first unplugged Sunday.
And here are my take-aways.
THINGS THAT WERE SURPRISING
1. Teenagers are resistant and reluctant to use phones for anything other than texting. I had to implore my 13 yr old to pick up the house phone and call his friends (they were supposed to meet up for Superbowl hangout that evening.) “Nobody calls anybody! Nobody leaves voice messages. Nobody checks voicemail!” “They won’t know this number. They won’t pick up.” He was correct on all accounts. I had to call parents and inform them that it was, in fact, our son calling from a landline, that this was no prank. The kids who ended up calling back didn't know to how to greet me. They stammered and hemmed and hawed. The idea that reaching out to a friend did not guarantee a direct connection with said friend, was foreign and stupid and strange. This all blew my mind.
2. The day felt incredibly long and languid. It unfolded slowly. When we get on a device, time is sucked up so quickly. I liken it to being in a casino. Minutes fly by, the whole concept of time is warped, thwarted, eradicated. Many times a day, I take my phone out of my pocket and there I am - Instagram, Facebook, Flipboard, Twitter, Matchington Mansion - and when I slip it back into my pocket, I’m unaware of how much time has passed. An hour? Twenty minutes? I don't register it, and yet, it’s gone in a flash.
3. I didn’t miss the things I thought I would. I didn’t miss social media, I didn't miss news notifications popping up, I didn't even miss the Marco Polos I love exchanging with a group of close friends. I didn’t miss getting emails. I didn’t miss looking around for my phone or “alone time.” I still had my alone time except it was quieter - an aloneness with my thoughts, observing things instead of being distracted by them. I didn’t miss being available and connected to an outside world. When I started wondering about how someone was doing, I picked up the house phone and gave them a ring. I left a message and hoped they’d call back. It felt freeing. It felt authentic. My husband felt the same. However, our oldest son’s biggest worry was missing out. He still got dropped off at his friend’s house for the SuperBowl party (the only kid there without a phone, I'm sure) and he still had loads of fun. In fact, when I called the kid’s house later that night to check up on him, he sounded energetic and happy and even ended the conversation with “I love you, mom.” But later he mentioned experiencing anxiety - feeling like he was missing out on “something important” by not having access to his phone. To him, having his phone nearby means having his friends nearby. Without it, he feels lost, unmoored. That admission made me think about how hard it is for our kids, who have grown up used to being “connected” all the time.
4. Landlines are FUN. My friends called a few times, and I would slightly thrill at the sound of a phone ringing throughout the house, and I’d run downstairs to pick up the receiver in time, smiling. As we talked, one friend commented how it felt like we were sixteen, hanging off our beds, twirling our hair, talking about our crushes.
5. My husband and I worked on a crossword puzzle over coffee and breakfast. I also finished a jigsaw puzzle in one afternoon, which I’d been working on for weeks. I read a lot. My boys lay together on the couch and agreed on what to watch on the one TV we could use. They hung out more than they had in a long, long time. We all felt relaxed. I ended up watching the Superbowl because by 9pm, I was too tired to start another jigsaw puzzle, too tired to read, so what else was there to do? I laid on the couch and learned about fumbles, and touchdowns, and cheered for the Chiefs and I kind of got into it. Who the fuck would have thunk.
THINGS THAT WERE ANNOYING
1. I couldn’t take pictures. That sucked.
2. Traveling was unsettling. When the boys went to SkyZone, I didn't like not being able to get in touch with them. Granted, my sister and her husband and kid were there too, and I called her, but still. I thought about car accidents or something random and awful happening while they were out, and I worried about when they’d get home. That kinda sucked too. It felt like an old yet unfamiliar sensation - not knowing what was going on at every single moment.
3. We couldn't order anything online. We couldn't use GrubHub or DoorDash, or GoogleMaps. We couldn’t just like check the weather with a swipe of one finger. Not having the everyday convenience of being online was a bit of a bother, but we survived. It made me realize that we have gotten lazy about daily tasks, and that part of our brain has BECOME our iPhone.
4. I snacked a lot. Without my calorie counting and fitness apps to log my food intake, I suddenly found myself snacking on junk. I did work out, but eating that day became a sort of time filler, and the feeling reminded me of quitting cigarettes and turning to food. That was unforeseen, and I did not like it.
THINGS THAT WERE PROFOUND
1. All day, we felt like we were together in the same space. We retreated less often. We felt serene, light on our feet. We settled into feeling bored, or lazy, or inspired. We gave each other more attention but somehow felt less encumbered upon. It was really, really lovely and soothing. Putting away our devices felt like going on vacation. When we went to bed, I felt closer to my husband. I felt like we had truly shared the day. And both us were not exactly looking forward to Monday, because it felt like going back to the grind. Already there was a bubble of anxiety in our chests, a feeling of weight on our shoulders. Also, I had 127 emails waiting for me this morning and not a one of them was something that desperately should have been answered yesterday. So there was that realization too. The world won’t fall apart if you check out for one day.
2. Twenty-fours can change you. It is a small amount of time, yet our 24 hours unplugged felt so incredibly substantial and so behavior-altering that it made me pause and realize just how addicted we have become to always being connected to the outside world via technology. It’s fucking bizarre, if you think about it.
3. Unplugging and reaping the benefits will only work when the adults in the house do it too. We already have a Device Free day and have had it for years, but it only applied to the kids. It has never felt as pure, and as important and GOOD, as yesterday, when the rules applied to all of us. Taking electronic away from the kids, while being allowed ourselves because “we didn't grow up with this, so we’re not addicted to it” - is like telling someone to go on a diet and eating cake in front of them all day, because well, you personally don't have an issue with weight. Suddenly, it became clear: to be together, we have to do this together.
Moral of the story: this was a pretty amazing experience, as trivial as it seemed to some. If you are feeling burdened, stressed out, fractured, cranky with your kids, your partner - I highly recommend investing in a landline, writing down phone numbers, picking a weekend day, and trying it out. It will feel new and beautiful, and reassuring somehow. Because while there were moments when obviously we went our own ways, did our own thing, we still felt as one. There were no walls, no apps, no texts getting in the way of figuring out and enjoying the day. We were fully present with each other, with ourselves - aware of time but not panicked or confined by it.
In her book, Tiffany Shlain writes that her family has been unplugging one day a week for ten years now. I don’t know how long we’ll last, but all I know is this - we can’t wait for next Sunday.

~
“Take me home.” Those were the only words I could manage to get out. Jimin didn't say a word, instead complying to my wishes. He took us home on a taxi that he paid for. My eyes shedding tears the whole ride, his arm around me. I couldn't pull myself together, not until we arrived at my apartment. Once inside the warmth it offered, Jimin didn't waste any time to scold me.
“Are you kidding me? A ferris wheel? Malum, you shouldn't be doing things like that if I'm not around.” He shakes his head, he seems disappointed in my. How was I supposed to know that would happen? They're supposed to be safe, for the most part. I mean, yeah accidents could happen, but still. “I'm sorry, I didn't know.” I quietly apologize, my head down.
“I mean, seriously? What were you thinking? I've told you many times, stay away from anything dangerous.” He sighs heavily. “You're just lucky I was there.” Finishing his little rant he comes to sit down next to me. My eyes watery again. “I was so scared, I was looking everywhere for you. I couldn't see you.” I hug him tightly, which he responds to by doing the same, rubbing my back. Everything had happened so quickly, I didn't know what would happen. Before he can continue scolding me, however, my phone starts ringing.
I open my purse to take my phone out, only to see Rae's name, plastered on the screen. “Hello?” I manage, my voice slightly shaky. Rae is quick with her words, she sounds worried, which in turn upsets me. “Are you okay? Where are you? David said there was an accident at the ferris wheel and you left running.” It was supposed to be a special night for Rae, but I did the thing I was trying to avoid, worry her. I wanted her to enjoy her night with Henry, not worry about me.
“Don't let her know you left with me.” Jimin chimes in from beside me. Surprisingly, Rae heard him, which obviously made me panic. “Who was that?” She quickly asks. “Was that a man's voice? Who are you with?” She questions and I can hear the guys asking her questions in the background of my whereabouts. “Uh… No… No, that was my uh, laptop. I'm home, I'm just a little shaken up is all. Please, please don't worry about me Rae! Just have fun with your date, please. Tell David I'm sorry I left, I really enjoyed his company, maybe we can all hang out again soon?” At my last sentence, Jimin's eyebrow raises. I'm confused for a moment as to what that gesture is supposed to mean. “I'm really sorry. I have to go now.” I hang up before she can argue anything, giving Jimin a glare. Now it was my turn to scold him.
“I’m not clueless, I haven’t mentioned you to her at all. I know better… but that was a close call.” He can only smile at me, it’s as if he’s taunting me. He pulls me into his embrace again, my head on his chest. “I’m sorry, Malum.” He rests his head atop of mine. I didn’t mention it to Rae on the phone because I didn’t want to worry her, but I was starting to realise that I’d been so scared because of the car accident. I would have been shocked, and feared for my life. Yes, but I don’t think I’d been as shocked, as I was now. The car accident had left a permanent mark. “I can’t believe I almost died twice. I… I’m just glad I have you.” I hold onto him tighter, it’s as if I’m holding my safe haven, and nothing could possibly go wrong as long as I hold on. I never want to let go.
It was so easy to fall asleep in his arms, that I hadn’t even realised when I had. All I remember was him singing softly to me, and my eyes having trouble staying open. It was Saturday morning now, and my body was covered by my blankets, head on my pillows. My phone buzzed loudly as my alarm went off. The sun shined through the window, bringing light into my room. Groaning as I turned my alarm off, remembering I still had work. I usually had the weekends off, but just like last week, I had to cover someone else’s shift.
Reluctantly getting out of bed with a deep sigh, I walked into my bathroom to shower. The hot water relaxing my muscles. I prayed that I could stay in here for awhile longer, just wanting to relax. Of course, that wasn’t possible. I had responsibilities, and bills to pay. After I had successfully gotten dressed and ready for work, I was off.
I rode my bike to work this time around, letting the air run through my hair. It was nice and soon today, which was great, but I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it much as I would have to stay in for most of it, working. “Hey Y/n, are you covering for someone again.” Lauren asked me, and I laughed sadly, nodding my head. “Can you believe it? I’m supposed to have the weekend off, but instead I’ve been working for two consecutive weeks.” She laughs as she pats my back.
“You’ll be fine. I’m sure something will work in your favor soon.” She smiles as she continues with her order. I quickly jump in to help her with the others. Taking orders at the register here and there. Today wasn’t as busy, but it wasn’t slow either. Thankfully so, because while most people might like slow days, as it means they didn’t have to do much. I hated them, with nothing to do I’d get bored easily.
“Hey, have you seen Stephen?” Lauren asks, as she taps the coffee cup in her hands. Now that she’d mentioned it, I hadn’t. He’d usually greet me when I came into work, but he hadn’t today. He wasn’t even out and about like usual, restocking items or marking things on his clipboard. “Not at all, where could he be?” She shrugs her shoulders as she takes the coffee to the customer. “I haven’t seen him at all either. Maybe he’s in his office?” She suggests. Maybe, but it wasn’t like him to stay in there so long.
The rest of the work day went slowly. Customers coming in and out, some sitting in different spots with books in their hands or laptops in front of them. The sun was shining brightly through the windows, and I wished I would be able to go out there, maybe go to a park and have a picnic with Rae. “Everyone, attention please.” Stephen spoke up, coming into the kitchen. My coworkers and I gathered around. I wondered if he’d been here this whole time or if he’d just got here. “I’m giving you all the week off until Monday. My mother got into an accident and she’s in the hospital, I have to go take care of her now and I figured I’d just let you all off the hook.” He sighs as he finishes his statement. He dangles the keys to the shop in his hand. “You guys can leave now as well, I’ll close up.” He walks over to the counter, announcing that we’re just about to close.
Some customers start picking up their stuff, getting ready to leave. “Are you sure? One of us could run the shop while you’re gone.” Lauren suggests but Stephen only shakes his head. He must really not want to deal with work at all, which worries me because maybe his mother was injured badly. I hoped she was okay. “No, it’s just not a good idea. I need to focus on my mom. I think you all deserve it anyway.” He smiles slightly, but anyone could tell he was hurting. “Stephen…” I walk closer to him, bringing him into a hug. “I’m sure she’ll be fine. Stay strong okay?” He nods his head, I wasn’t sure what to say to make him feel even just slightly better, but I needed to say something.
Everyone else started to give him encouraging words. One by one, we all started to leave as well. I had been complaining about having to work on my days off, but now I felt bad. I’d been giving the whole week off now, but it was because of something horrible. It left an unpleasant feeling settling in my stomach, like I shouldn’t enjoy my short vacation because that would make me a bad person. I wasn’t the only one who had the week off, regardless those thoughts floated around my head for awhile. I sighed as I rode my bike, trying to let the air take my dark thoughts away with it.
I got a sudden thought though, when I was at work I had wished I could go out on a picnic with Rae, now I could. It would be perfect, being able to ask what happened last night after I left, not to mention apologizing for worrying her and leaving so suddenly. I unlocked my phone and dialed her number. Didn’t take long for her to answer, as if she had been waiting for my call. “Y/n?” She calls my name through the phone.
“Hey. I was wondering if you wanted to meet me at a park, have a picnic. It’s so nice out, I didn’t want to waste it.” I hoped she’d say yes, but I knew there was a possibility that she’d made plans with Henry last night, to go out today. I crossed my fingers, stopping my bike, waiting for cars to cross before I could. “Yeah, that sounds fun! Plus you owe me an explanation.” She sounded firm in her tone, but not angry. I smiled as she said so.
“I know I do, I’m really sorry Rae. I hope I didn’t ruin your night.” If I had, I would be so shattered. Yeah, the accident at the ferris wheel wasn’t my fault, and it could have happened to anyone else. Even so, I felt guilty for it. “Of course not. Obviously I was worried, and so were the boys, but thankfully because you said you were at home safely we felt better. We tried our best to enjoy the night, we just missed you is all.” A sigh of relief escapes my mouth. I couldn’t explain the amount of weight that was lifted off my shoulders when she said that. “I’m so glad you guys could at least enjoy the rest of your night. Well, I’ll meet you there?” I was about to hang up on her, but she stopped me before I could.
“Wait, have you read the email the school sent all the students? Everyone’s been talking about it.” The tone in her voice was more serious now, giving me the impression that something bad had happened. “I’ve been working, I haven’t checked my phone. Is it serious?” I asked her. The cars had stopped crossing by now and I rode my bike to what was left until I’d arrive home. “I’ll explain it to you later, it’s so bad. I still can’t believe it’s real.” She says, her voice expressed her clear disbelief. We said our goodbyes and hung up. I tried my best to open up my emails as I rode my bike.
Sure enough, there it was. An email from administration that stated we had the week off because of some internal issues. It didn’t seem as serious, but then again if they needed to focus on that problem so much that they gave students and teachers a week off, it had to be serious. My mind ran circles trying to figure out what type of internal issue could cause such a reaction. I couldn’t come up with anything. Instead I got home and opened my door, rushing to change out of my work clothes. Once I had I packed the necessary things for our picnic. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to see her because I was dying to know what had happened with the school. As quickly as I had gotten home, I had left as well.
As I got back on my bike, Jimin called out to me. “Malum, where are you going?” He asked. I would have responded sooner, but I was slightly taken by surprise. I had noticed it before, but it was much more noticeable now. Jimin’s light that outlined his whole being, and followed his every move, was starting to dim. It wasn’t as bright as the first night I met him. “What’s wrong with your hair?” I asked him, reaching my hand up to touch his blonde locks. The roots of his hair were turning black, but I highly doubted it was because he needed a touch up. Angels wouldn’t need to do that, would they? Dye their hair? He grabbed my wrist gently, pushing it down. “It’s stress, it tends to happen to us guardians.” He brushes it off, instead opting to get an answer from me. “Who are you going out with?” He asks, his tone of voice is a little different. Lately he’d been changing, in the way he spoke and I wasn’t sure why. He was just slightly off, but maybe it really was the stress like he claimed.
“I’m just going to have a picnic with Rae. Please tell me it’s not me causing you stress, I’m so sorry.” I suddenly felt bad, maybe it was me. He’d been on top of me these two weeks we’d known each other for. Or more like I met him, and in the span of that time I’d gotten into three different incidents. He was trying his hardest and I was probably still causing him trouble. He could only smile as he chuckles slightly. “It’s not you, it’s just guardian things.” He had me in his embrace now, comforting me. I was worried it was me, and maybe it wasn’t, but I was sure I was adding onto it. I brought my arms around him for a moment, enjoying his warmth, but I had to let go eventually. Rae was waiting and I didn’t want to give her the wrong impression.
“Even if it’s not me, i'm sorry you’re so stressed. I’ll try to be on my best behavior. I promise.” I smiled holding my pinky up. He locked his with mine as he shook his head. “Stop being so adorable before I make you stay with me.” He laughs as he secures the bag I was holding with the food into the basket of my bike. “Alright, bye Jimin.” I wave at him as I ride off. I laugh at myself, knowing that even if we aren’t together, he’s still with me making sure I’m okay. I make my way to the park where Rae and I were supposed to meet and set up. She still hadn’t arrived, but then again I was slightly early. Not that she made me wait, she showed right on time.
“Why are you always so punctual?” I laugh as she sits down. She does so as well, firing back. “Why aren’t you?” We both laughed, it’s not like I was late to events by hours, but sometimes I’d show up some minutes late. Rae started to dig in, grabbing half a sandwich. I did so as well, ready for her to tell me what had happened. “So…” I started off. She raised an eyebrow at me, as if she didn’t know what I was talking about. “Rae! Tell me what happened, why is the school giving us the week off?” Her eyes went wide, as if it clicked in her head what I was talking about. “Ohh…” She spits out, covering her mouth.
“You won’t believe this! Apparently the dean, and some other professors have been washing a curtain amount of the tuition money. They’ve been doing this for a couple years.” Rae says, taking another bite of her sandwich. “Washing?” I ask, I’d never heard the term before, or at least I didn’t think so. Whatever it was it sounded bad. “Y/n! You don’t know what that is? Money laundering? They’ve been tuition money from students to make larger amounts through criminal activities. They put back what they use and keep what they made.” Once she explained it, I realised I had heard of it, through movies and tv shows. I didn’t think I’d ever hear of that happening in real life, especially so close to me.
“How’d the school find out anyway?” I asked her, quite intrigued by the whole situation. “A friend of mine who helps out in the office said that another professor who found out about it let the cops know. Obviously no one but the cops knows who the professor is. Apparently they have the people involved held up at the police station for questioning.” She further explains. I couldn’t believe that was happening right on our campus. I wondered what drove them to do so, maybe they needed money to pay for medical procedures? Then again, they’d been doing this for a couple years now.
“Right, they can’t just take them to jail, they need to investigate if everything is true. If it is, they’ll probably cancel certain classes huh? Until they find replacements.” I tossed the idea around. It was still crazy to me, but I didn’t want to judge them. Maybe they had a valid reason, even if it wasn’t under the law. “You bet. You know our professor, Mrs. O’Brien, she was involved in it too. Which means we’ll probably have that class canceled.” She sighs in defeat. She had the right to because if they didn’t find a replacement for her, that would set us back for the year. Having to take that class again next semester.
“Enough of that, why did you leave so suddenly? I mean I know that the ride stopped working at that must have been terrifying, but you left running without a word.” I wasn’t sure either, I mean I knew why, but maybe someone else in my shoes would have waited for David. Done something different, instead of sprinting off. I just, I wanted to see Jimin, he was the only one who could help. My instincts told me to run to him and I did, but how to explain that to Rae. “I’m not sure, maybe I was just in fear of my life, having flashbacks to the car accident. I just wanted to run home in that moment.” I explained to her. Which was the truth, or at least half of it. “How’d you even get home?” She asks, which was a valid question. The boardwalk was pretty far for my apartment and telling her I ran home was crazy. Which was why she was probably curious.
“I ran as far as I could and once I was tired I called a taxi. I just wanted to get home. I know I should have waited, or warned you all, I just wasn’t thinking to be honest.” I half lied to her again. I hadn’t realised just how much I had to lie to her, to keep Jimin a secret from her. She nodded at my explanation. “I get it, I’m just glad nothing happened to the both of you. Which brings me to my next point. Who was with you last night?” She raises a questioning eyebrow. I thought she’d believed me when I told her it was my laptop. What made her think I was lying?
“What do you mean? I told you it was my laptop. I was watching some random video to get my mind off things.” She nodded her head slowly, as if she wasn’t sure. “You hung up the phone so quickly, I just wasn’t sure if it was true.” She wasn’t wrong, there was a valid reason for her not to believe me, and I had hung up quickly. Of course, I needed her to believe me, to keep her in the dark about Jimin. “I know, I just didn’t want you to worry about me.” I sigh, taking another bite of the sandwich in my hand.
“So are you going to do anything with your week off school?” I ask her, trying to change the subject. “Because I think I’m going to visit my parents.” The thought had just come to me. It’s been awhile since I had gone to visit them, and now I had time. It only seemed appropriate to go. “Maybe I should too, but Henry and I planned a date for Tuesday, since we have the week off.” I nodded, smile on my face. The fact that he asked her out for a second date was great, at least I didn’t ruin her chances for that. The rest of our time was spent talking about random things. Like movies we wanted to see, tests we’d taken this week that we had a headache studying for, or plans we had. It was pretty peaceful, the sun was warm and the wind was perfect. Carrying our laughter with it, as it ran through our hair, and past the tree branches.
Eventually I arrived home, folding clothes and shoving them into a suitcase, as I dialed my moms phone number. “Y/n? Wow, it’s been awhile since you’ve called.” My mother's voice seems surprised. She wasn’t wrong, the last time I’d called her was before I’d met Jimin. Which was two weeks ago, I would have called sooner but I was so caught up in school and everything that had happened since I’ve met him. “Sorry mom, I would have called sooner but school and work are a hassle.” I explain to her, continuing to pack.
“It’s worth it though, you’ll see.” She sounds a bit tired, she’d probably just gotten home from work. She loved being a doctor, but she couldn’t deny it took a toll on her. “I just hope I’m as happy in my job as you are in yours.” I paused for a moment thinking about what my life would be like down the road. “But mom, I called to ask if it was okay with you and dad if I come visit. I have the week off work and school.” I asked, stopping what I was doing to see what she’d say. I wasn’t sure why I was nervous. “Of course honey! Oh this’ll be fun! Your dad and I have been dying to see you! You’ve been away for so long. We’ve really missed you sweetie.” She exclaimed through the phone, her tone was no longer worn out, but instead excitement was apparent in it. A big smile on my face as I folded my shirts to pack them into my suitcase.
“Oh great! Okay, I’m catching a bus tonight. I think I’ll be home before midnight.” I told her, she was so excited to see me, which of course I was as well to see them. We said our goodbyes and I ended the call. I tossed my phone on my bed as I went to my closet to get some jackets in case it was cold. I came across Jimin’s white knit sweater. I ran my finger tips over it. On impulse, I shoved it in with the rest of my clothes, deciding I need if. Didn’t take me much longer to finish packing after that, calling myself a taxi.
I gathered my things and did a quick count, to make sure I had all of my belongings. Once I did I walked out, the taxi already waiting for me. The man sitting in the driver's seat walked out, helping me with my suitcase. After he’d placed it in the trunk he walked back to his door. I sat down, looking out the window as he drove. The ride was as peaceful as it could be. I watched the city pass by, the place where I met Jimin, where he saved me from the car, and the road that lead to the boardwalk. I smiled slightly, happy to step away from all of that, even if just temporarily.
After sometime, I’d arrived at the bus station, paying off the taxi with some pocket money I had. I walked in and aimed to get in line, to pay for my ticket. Which wasn’t much of a wait, as only one person was in front of me. I quickly walked over to the counter. I asked for the ticket, waiting for her to tell me the amount I needed to pay, to retrieve it from my wallet. “Okay, one two way ticket will be $75.” The lady said, and she looked at me, waiting for me to pay. My eyes however, went wide, as I reached for my purse to retrieve my wallet. I didn’t even have with me. My heart palpitating erratically, as I figured I’d left it in the taxi, but I tried hard to remember where I’d last seen it. I realised only then, that I had never had it with me. When I checked to see if I had all of my things, my purse was missing. How did I forget it?
“I’m sorry.” I smiled awkwardly at the woman behind the counter, as she waited, slightly annoyed at me. I sighed, frustrated with myself. I stuffed my hand in my back pocket to bring my phone out, instead I felt paper. I wasn’t sure what if was, bringing it out to inspect it. Be careful, Allicio. You'll need this soon. The piece of paper from the night I went to do laundry was still in my jeans. The hundred dollar bill along with it. I hadn’t realised I’d been wearing the same jeans. Had I mindlessly put these in the washing machine this week without taking the paper and money out? I must have because the ink seemed smeared now, like it had been wet at some point and now it was utterly crips from being in the dryer. Thank god I hadn’t taken it out, or else I’d have nothing to pay with. I handed the money over to the lady and waited for my change and ticket. I could not believe I’d really been dumb enough to forget my own purse.
As I went to sit down, waiting for the bus to arrive, it hit me. You’ll need this soon. Is this what he meant? How could a random customer have known this would happen? That’s impossible, it had to be a coincidence.
Right?

do one where Simon is dating one of her friends but Demi falls in love with him and didn't show it because she knows that it's wrong and her friend would be hurt. But her friend go to a trip with her friends (including Demi) and Simon and leaves them (Demi and Simon) alone in the beach. They couldn't stop their feelings and hook up.
Dear whoever sent this in: you probably hate me and I’m so sorry that this took forever to get up. BUT I hope you enjoy it anyways! Also, I couldn’t think of anyone else so I used Marissa lol, hope it doesn’t seem awkward.
Something was wrong with me. I was going insane. That was the only possible explanation for all the thoughts going through my mind for the last few months. It was so wrong, so bad, but I couldn’t stop obsessing over it. It consumed all my thoughts, day and night, to the point where I literally thought I was going crazy.
Simon, I said his name silently in my mind. Simon Cowell. How could this man who I’d hardly ever spoken to, who was dating my best friend, have such an incredible control over me? It was scary, but I didn’t know how to stop it.
“Demi! We’re outside!” I picked up my phone to hear my mentioned best friend Marissa shouting over loud, blaring music from the inside of her car. I laughed and grabbed my bag and hat and raced outside.
“Marissa! I’m so excited!” I took my seat, shotgun, and turned back to see who else was in the car with us. And then my heart stopped.
“Oh, Simon...” I trailed off, feeling slightly dazed. Suddenly, the bikini I was wearing seemed a little too revealing, the lacy white cover-up too flimsy. I was hot, I was blushing, and Marissa was looking at me funny.
“I didn’t know you were coming,” I finished lamely. He smiled, kindly, but he looked a little confused.
“It was a little last minute,” He said. “But this should be fun,” He raised his eyebrows, and I quickly turned around and sunk down into the seat a little. I could barely survive 5 minutes in the car with him. How would I survive a whole weekend trapped in a beach house with him?
But once Marissa turned up the volume on the radio again and started telling us about some funny story that happened the other day, I began to relax a little. My laughs didn’t feel as forced, and my eyes weren’t nervously flickering to the mirror to see Simon.
“We’re here!” Marissa yelled once we finally reached the beach. We were pulled up in front a beautiful, bright pink beach house, with a gorgeous view of the sea from the back. I grabbed my stuff and we quickly dumped it inside before making our way back down to the beach. We laid down our towels and propped up our umbrellas in a more deserted area so we wouldn’t be bothered by others.
“I want to go down to where everyone else is. That’s where the bigger waves are,” Marissa said, brushing the sand off her knees as she stood up. Her and the two other friends we came with took off to go find bigger waves to splash around in. I was perfectly content with where I was, watching the sea without anyone else around.
Except for Simon.
I slowly turned my head and saw him watching me. I looked away quickly and wished that I didn’t blush so easily. We were sitting so close together. How had we ended up so close to each other?
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Simon remarked casually. I tried to remember how to speak.
“Yeah,” I said, wanting to cry in frustration. Here I was, alone on a beach with Simon Cowell, and all I could say is yeah?
“Do they have beaches like this in the UK?” I asked, desperate to keep a conversation going. Simon turned his head to face me. He looked pleased that I was talking to him.
“Not like these California ones. It’s colder, and the water is gray, not blue. The sand isn’t as soft either. It’s more rocky,” He said. I nodded, trying to look fascinated about British beaches, even though all I could think about was how much nicer he looked in person. He was so much friendlier and approachable than he seemed on TV, and dare I say, much more attractive.
“Where did Marissa and the others go?” I asked aloud, licking my lips nervously. I didn’t think I could handle the crazy emotions going through me right now. I felt like a goddamn teenager with all these stupid hormones. He was Simon Cowell, and he was dating my best friend. I could not fall in love with him.
“Who cares?” He said quietly. My head whipped towards him, not sure I heard him right.
“What?” I asked. He sighed and shook his head.
“I know Marissa is your best friend, and you’ll probably hate me now, but I just don’t think we’re really working, if you know what I mean,” He said, scratching his chin thoughtfully. I felt goosebumps on my arms and shivered, despite myself.
“Well, then why are you still with her?” I asked.
“I’m not sure how to tell her. On top of that, there’s someone else… but the problem is it’s someone very close to her,” He sighed. My pulse quickened, but I pushed the idea out of my mind. He couldn’t be talking about me. No way.
“Who?” I instantly regretted the word the moment it came out. He looked as startled and embarrassed as I felt.
“Um,” He started. I shook my head, feeling my cheeks blazing.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked. It’s none of my business,” I grimaced and braved a quick glance at him and was surprised to see him smiling.
“Do you really want to know?” He asked, a smirk on his face. My pulse was racing like crazy, and I didn’t even have time to nod or shake my head when he leaned in and pressed his lips on mine.
Oh. I let out a small sigh as I felt his surprisingly soft lips on mine and his hand slipped behind my neck and pulled me closer. He pulled away quickly, leaving me feeling dazed.
“Wha..” I was at a loss for words and absently touched my lips, not sure if what just happened was actually real.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” Simon said, shaking his head. He seemed embarrassed, and so sad. It was my turn to smile.
“Don’t be,” I said before reaching up to kiss him again. If the first kiss was soft and unsure, this one was hungry, and passionate. It felt like we had been starving this whole time and just had a taste of what we had been missing.
“Damn,” I groaned into his mouth as his hands slipped up my back, his fingers dangerously close to the bikini clasp.
“We should stop,” I forced myself away from him, my cheeks blazing. “What if Marissa comes back? Or someone sees us?” I couldn’t stop myself from worrying.
“Knowing Marissa, it’ll be another hour until she remembers us. We’re fine,” I finally let myself go, relishing in the feel and taste of his lips against mine. I hadn’t realized just how badly I had wanted this until now.
Bzzzzt. I tried ignoring my buzzing phone, but it was incessant. Sighing, I finally pulled away, and glanced down at the screen.
Shit. I had 5 missed calls from Marissa. I whipped my head around wildly, paranoid that she was somewhere here and had seen us. When I was sure we were alone, I called her back.
“Hello?” I said, a little uncertainly.
“Demi! Just letting you and Simon know, we found this awesome club. I don’t think we’re gonna be back at the hotel before 2,” Marissa screamed into the other end, trying to make her voice heard over the thrashing music and people in the background. I let out a small sigh of relief and grinned.
“That’s totally fine. You guys have fun!” I said quickly before hanging up again. Simon was watching me, seeming confused.
“Marissa said they found a club. They won’t be back at the hotel for hours,” I said, trying my hardest to contain my grin, but failing. Simon smirked.
“Well, how about we get back to the hotel and make as good use of that time as we can?” He asked, a sly smile spreading across his face. This time, I didn’t even blush.
“Sounds like a plan.”
