My feelings for this book are complicated. The first time I started reading this back in 2022, was just after my grandma had passed away and I wasn’t really in the right headspace to be reading it. So I dnf’ed it. But now, having picked it back up more than a year later I really enjoyed it.
I loved Dex and Mosscap’s banter and philosophical discussions. They felt like friends even when they were just getting to know each other. One of my absolute favorite scenes from this whole book was the one at the end, where Mosscap made Dex tea and listened to them. It was really comforting.
This was cozy and really had me thinking the whole time I read it. So I think I’m gonna give this one a solid four stars. I’m looking forward to what adventures Dex and Mosscap get up to in the next one.

Book Notes: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
Tumblr media
This winter ended up being a season of cozy science fiction for me. I devoured Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell (amazing) and then plowed through every book in Becky Chambers' Wayfarers series. Those of you who regularly read our blog will remember Lori raving about Becky's Monk and Robot series (also amazing and cozy and full of self-acceptance and love). Well, it prompted me to get the audio-book of The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, #1 in Wayfarers. Her world-building, wit, and characters are all *chef's kiss*. Of all of the probable and improbable sci-fi futures I've read, this is the one I like the most. Full of acceptance and a mingling of cultures and diverse beings who learn about each other's ways of life, it is so very satisfying to read.
Book 1 follows the motley crew of The Wayfarer, a ship tasked with making tunnels to connect one faraway place with another. When the crew (several humans from wildly different backgrounds, a reptilian Aandarisk pilot, a member of a mostly extinct species, a navigator shrouded in secrecy, and an AI) takes on a lucrative long-haul job, they're stuck together on their small vessel for almost two years. Along the way they encounter pirates, a xenophobic border control, sabotage, and more, only to reach their destination and end up in the crosshairs of a local conflict. It’s not all bad, though. They are also reunited with loved ones, make plenty of new friends, and grow closer as a crew (although begrudgingly for some of them).
The later books don't have to be read in any specific order; they're more companion novels than a series, with occasional references to characters from The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, so definitely read that first. This series is an absolute joy to read. A little bit of romance, a smattering of found family, and a whole lot of space, these slower-paced books are a warm hug, or a cozy blanket on a rainy day. They are my new favorite comfort reads, and if you love a diverse cast of characters and enjoy books about the intricacies of people and their relationships with one another, then they might be yours too!

Verona has 99 problems—including a time machine.
Tumblr media
the Benvolio & Mercutio Turn Back Time paperback is now available to pre-order wherever books are sold online!
Verona has 99 problems—including a time machine.
All Benvolio has ever desired is a peaceful life alongside his spirited—albeit quarrelsome—roommate, Mercutio. But as the story goes, the course of true love never did run smooth, and when tensions between the Montagues and the Capulets reach a boiling point, Benvolio and Mercutio are dragged into the mess Romeo makes of all their lives.
Then an older version of Benvolio crashes into their lives, offering the opportunity to change fate, Mercutio does as he always does—seizes the chance. There’s just one problem: no deal is without strings, and this one involves a deadly secret that Mercutio is determined to take to the grave.
What follows is a lively adventure through the ages, replete with love and heartache. Amidst the chaos, this inseparable duo will unravel the true depth of their friendship.
A riotous romp of a retelling of Romeo & Juliet. Side effects of reading may contain laughter, heartache, and a need for more. This light, sci-fi fantasy is the perfect shelf companion to The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian, Something Fabulous by Alexis Hall, and The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting by KJ Charles.

Save the library. Save the world.
Are you ready for a new YA fantasy adventure? Emily Carlisle was never the main character of her own story. Known only as the Witch of the Stacks, she helped any hero or heroine who asked. Potions, spells, and the occasional magical artifact were passed on. She never kept the power for herself, and never wanted to be anything more than a support character. That is, until the Rot began to spread…

last book read + last stethoscope used, part 11
Tumblr media
The stethoscope: Thinklabs One. I talk about this one a lot in this post (and the pics are better), but let me just say--if this thing hadn't been so expensive I would take it with me everywhere, because it is such an absolute joy to listen with it. Figured I'd pair my electronic scope with a book about a romance between a man and a sentient AI, ha.
The book: World Running Down by Al Hess, a dystopian "cozy sci-fi" novel that took me awhile to read because of pacing issues and a bit too much exposition and world-building, but it was worth my time all the same. In the wastelands of Utah, Valentine and his partner, Ace, are salvagers who travel the dangerous outskirts of Salt Lake City with the goal of earning enough money to afford a visa into the city--and for Valentine, funds for his medication and gender-affirming surgery. Their already-tumultuous lives are upended when they meet Osric, a sentient AI who has been illegally implanted into an android's body. Osric has been tasked with offering them a job that will have implications none of the three of them can fathom. This book was probably too many things at once--sci fi, fantasy, action, adventure, romance, and for that reason I had some questions about the society that were never really answered. Not sure if that was deliberate on the author's part or not. Not a perfect read, but I'm interested to read more from Hess.

A Psalm for the Wild-Built
Becky Chambers
Publisher: Tor Genre: sci fi, cozy Year: 2021
Tumblr media
Okay, don't judge me. I finally read my first ever Becky Chambers, and I'm so glad I did. I knew I'd love her work, but it was just one of those things I hadn't gotten around to. A Psalm for the Wild-Built is now added to my all-time favorites. The world building is so lush and beautiful and how dearly I want to live there. The agender main character, Dex, is so relatable. They have everything they want in life, but still feel restless. They're a monk that travels and helps people with their emotional needs while brewing them a special cup of tea. The book is so gentle and loving and it made me cry. At one point, Mosscap, the robot, asks "Why are you searching for a purpose? Why is living just not enough?" and it was so profound to me because I constantly am feeling like I'm not enough. Besides being a philosophical story through-and-through (Dex and Mosscap's conversations revolving around animals vs objects and what deserves consideration are some of my favorite parts) this is a gentle story that I think will have broad appeal in the up and coming soft-SFF genre that gained popularity with TJ Klune and I am so here for it. I absolutely cannot wait to devour everything else she has ever written

Time Travel Thursday: 21 March
Time Travel Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Budget Tales Book Blog where readers take a look back at what they were reading this time last year (or the year before or the year before that…) and compare it to what you are reading now. 21 March 2022 Two years ago today I read Barbarian’s Touch in a single night. It wasn’t one of my favorites of the series but they were all quick…

My new cozy, futuristic slice-of-life web novel is coming to Patreon with an extra long first chapter on August 19th! It will be releasing chapters in between scheduled chapters of The Wayward Souls of Avalon, so you're going to get two slice-of-life X soft sci-fi web novels for the price of one!
Lonely Planet Hotel tells the story of a runaway named Ellis Hughes who finds himself suddenly employed at a secretive, state of the art hotel in Antarctica. Following the day to day lives of the hotel staff, LPH delves into the inner workings of hospitality and what it means to be human! We hope to see you on our reservation list this August!
(Also wanted to mention that most of the cast is LGBTIQA+ and Ellis is non-binary, using he/they pronouns, and is also asexual! So if you're looking for a book with an ace MC, check out LPH! Also check out The Wayward Souls of Avalon, my other web novel, for more queer cozy rep!)

Upgrade by Blake Crouch
Upgrade by Blake Crouch was a library book and is science fiction. Set in the far not not distant future, Logan works for a US government agency known as the GPA, Gene Protection Agency. Gene manipulation was criminalized after an insect modification to improve crop yield radically backfired and caused a worldwide famine, the effects of which are still felt decades later. Logan and his partner…

(Edit: using this as a pinned post about all my books for now in lieu of another one. This was formerly for International Lesbian Day but now is a one stop shop for all my books) For starters, consider checking out
Catnip Amazon | Itch.io | Alternative Ebook Sellers | Audiobook For all his life, Sol has believed he's only worthy of affection as long as he's useful--and he intends to prove his ultimate use by restoring a colony on Venus as a new home for his friends and lovers. But upon arriving, he realizes there's more here than he bargained for. For one, the resident artificial intelligence wants to make friends with him. For another, the nanites want to completely change his body... and in the process reveal her true self. Stuck (or perhaps blessed?) with a new form, she must find out what it means to live, to be loved for who she is rather than her work. Catnip is a cozy space exploration novel about a trans woman's journey to find herself and what it means to be loved for who she is, with the help of her polycule and a lesbian AI. If Sci-fi isn't quite your speed, you can also check out
Tumblr media
The Hatchling Amazon | Itch.io | Alternative Ebook Sellers
Sarric dreamed of dragons all his life; such flights of fancy captured his imagination at a young age and sustained him through the cruelty of the hunters that ruled the isolated mountain town of Rivermist. One day, a real dragon appears before him, dazzling him with her beauty and an answer to the unease that's afflicted him for as long as he remembers. He's eager to take what she offers--but the greedy hunters, driven by tales of treasure hoards, will do everything in their power to destroy her. The Hatchling is a fantasy about a trans woman's journey of accepting her identity and her new found family.
Tumblr media
If you want something a little spicier, consider reading Wyrmheart Itch.io exclusive
A mage without home or family seeks to establish a legacy for herself so that her name might ring out through the ages.
An assassin is charged with striking at the heart of a draconic cult that surely hides some greater evil.
Wyrmheart is a story set in Maria Ying's Those Who Break Chains universe and tells the story of trans women making their way through life in this fantastical world.
You can also take a look at my Patreon where I am currently writing several things, but primarily
Tumblr media
Forged in the Light of New Stars
Forged is a t4t lesbian isekai story about a closeted trans woman and a repressed, rotten egg (in the trans sense) who find themselves transported to a vibrant, magical world filled with advanced technology, mysteries to discover, and most importantly: a place where they can their truest selves. Follow Gwen as she strives to take control of her life, to be the woman she's always known she could be, and find true happiness.
Follow Brian as he struggles to cast off the chains that his family has bound him in, to undo the bigoted messages they poured into him constantly, and find out, deep down, who she truly is.
Watch them fall in love with each other and with the mystical world of Tellara and all the new friends they make along the way. See them uncover secrets about the connection between Earth and Tellara and their purpose as travelers between worlds. Magic, alchemy, and queerness collide in this otherworldly journey.

Queerplatonic book recs, that actually have QPRs, inspired by me seeing someone listing qpr books that were literally just queer people being friends 🤦‍♀️
These all have the main characters in queerplatonic relationships,  explicitly and/or unambiguously in most cases.
Tumblr media
The Thread That Binds
solarpunk-fantasy about queer bookbinding witches, 2/3 MCs are an aroace & an ace in a QPR
Baker Thief
superhero fantasy with a bigender aromantic superhero / demisexual woman QPR
Not Even Bones
YA supernatural trilogy where the main characters initially seem to be developing a romantic relationship, but eventually realise neither actually feel that way, and settle into more or less a QPR (without labels, but it’s pretty clear)
Tumblr media
Two Dark Moons
YA fantasy where an arospec girl & ace lizard kid accidentally get fantasy-married & develop a friendship/qpr
The Wolf Among The Wild Hunt
dark fantasy novella with an aroace wolfman & nonbinary knight qpr
Our Bloody Pearl
NA fantasy with a siren & ace pirate, originally marketed as a romance, but it is pretty much a qpr and that’s what the author intended!
Tumblr media
The Reckless Kind
historical YA with an aspec girl becoming a family with her best friend and his boyfriend
Fire Becomes Her
YA, 1920s inspired fantasy world, demiro girl breaks free of her relationship and instead ends up in a QPR with a nonbinary transmasc ace.
If It Makes You Happy
YA contemporary about a girl navigating her queerplatonic relationship with her best friend, and a possible new romantic relationship.
Tumblr media
Royal Rescue
high fantasy with an amatonormative royal marriage system, where the aroace MC has had enough, rescues himself, and starts to dismantle the system, finding a QPR on the way
The Heretic’s Guide To Homecoming (duology)
slow introspective high fantasy following two characters on a journey, doesn’t explicitly have them define their relationship in a QPR-like way, but undeniably focuses on complex platonic relationships and narratives
Mindtouch
this is one that’s been on my tbr forever - a sort of cozy/slice of life sci-fi that centres a platonic relationship between two aliens, which is quite reminiscent of a QPR. apparently there’s like 5 books now, I’ve only read the first so far!
Tumblr media
Archivist Wasp / Firebreak
honorable mention because it’s not explicitly a qpr - but all of the author’s works focus on platonic m/f relationships in a very aspec way, and have absolutely no romance anywhere. one of the central relationships is very much platonic soulmates/ qpr vibes (postapoc ghosty sci-fi/fantasy YA & dystopian anticapitalism)
