Little character-building HCs I like to use in my fics...

Bilbo prefers ale, and Thorin prefers wine. Bilbo doesn't mind wine and Thorin doesn't mind ale, but they both have a strong preference for the other. When they both order drinks, they have to swap as the bar tender will always assume it's the other way around.

Bilbo has been insulted many times throughout the journey, but being called a "ferret" by the trolls offended him more than anything. It's also subconsciously the reason Thorin calls him a "rat" on the ramparts later...

Thorin sleeps in, and Bilbo rises early. Bilbo is from a farming community, and hobbits would be up with the dawn - how else would they eat first breakfast at 7am every day? Dwarves are more likely to be night owls, I think, and therefore sleep in later.

Thorin's birthday is January 12th! This one was pinned down mostly by the excellent and lovely @ladyrionaofthelake who came up with a whole heap of reasons for the date, after I mentioned I thought he was a January baby, and asked if she wanted to pick the date for me to use in fic!

Bilbo is a hairy little fella - just look at those feet! He's not smooth as an eggplant under all those clothes, for sure!

Hobbit vision is better in the day, and Dwarven vision is better at night. They both have excellent hearing, but a hobbit nose isn't to be matched, and therefore Bilbo is more likely to pick up scents than any other member of the company.

Bilbo is demisexual. I always felt like he was on the ace spectrum somewhere, but this suits my personal headcanon of how Bilbo approaches romance in general. Maybe I'm projecting a little with this one, but well... I just really like the idea!

In the sun, Bilbo tans and Thorin burns. Hobbits are outdoorsy folk, and dwarves aren't, so it just makes sense that way around, I think!

To summarize, Lola asked me about any exciting plans for the weekend and how my fic was coming along. She also wished me a happy Friday bc she's an absolute sweetheart and Tumblr's a bitch for not showing me the ask until Saturday (smh)

The following is my response:

Hello darling!

Thank you for the happy Friday and my apologies that it is no longer Friday 😅. I do have exciting things planned for this weekend! I'm dogsitting for my sister's boyfriend's parents!

This is Luke. He's a very cute golden retriever and he's the bestest of boys (it's a tie with your Wilf—don't worry). When I came to see him today, he was so excited he started play fighting and now my arm is lovingly covered in scratches. The things we do for pets, eh?

As for my fics (bc, yes, there's two of them now, dear god), they are going well. My Halloween oneshot, I Did Not Sign Up For This, is going strong as I've managed to write almost 2k in two days (shoutout to @lordoftherazzles for hyping up the two sentences I sent and then going feral with me about ao3 and kudos). Make It Out is also going well. I'm slowly chipping away at the last few chapters but I can proudly say that the first chapter is coming out VERY VERY SOON (perhaps sometime this week? 👀)!!! I just need to write a shiny synopsis and make a few shameless promo posts and then it'll be good to be released. I'm still amazed there's anyone invested in my brainrot project 🥰

Thanks for the ask, Lola! 😊 I would have gotten to it sooner, but as soon as I started to reply, our power went out! Anyway, here we go!

🛳 Are there any new ships you want to write for? (Platonic, romantic, or anything in between.)

There are always going to be relationships (of every variety) that I want to tackle. I wish I had more courage to dabble in LOTR characters more, because I think that would be a lot of fun. As for Hobbit things, I'd be delighted to poke at Nwalin and even Barduil things some more, even if that's not necessarily new for me.

✨What's one area of your writing that you think needs the least amount of improvement?

This is such a hard question!!! I always feel like I need lots of improvement in various spots of writing. In the actual writing itself, I like to think I'm pretty good at setting a scene? I'm a sucker for details. For the writing experience overall, I am 110% happy with my outlining process, even though it takes a little bit longer (a lot longer lol)

🎉 How are you going to be kind to yourself if you don't meet your goals?

You would ask this one! Honestly, I'm going into the new year in HOPES of finishing a lot of things, but I'm not going to bully myself when I have a no-writing day, or don't update a fic as quickly as I'd like. I've learned a lot this past year that just being proud of what you do accomplish is far better than lamenting over what you didn't. Maybe I should set up some sort of reward system? I've thought about it! It could be incentive lolol but overall, I'm just gonna celebrate what I do, and not worry about what I didn't do.

Here's to the confirmed bachelor that lives at Bag End, who returns from adventure, tired and heart-sore, and finds comfort in the sunshine of the Shire. Who works in his garden, grows his tomatoes, and sits outside the big green door with his pipe. Who writes songs and poems, who translates epic tales, and dedicates years of his peaceful life to spinning one of his own. Who takes in his distant cousin, who calls him Nephew, and shares a birthday with him each year, then leaves him to begin his own tales of adventure with a precious golden trinket he picked up many years before.

Here's to the Hobbit who falls somewhere in the middle. Who leaves the Lonely Mountain and returns to his books and his armchair, who plants his seeds and watches them grow, all with the company of another. A dwarf who might have been king, but for one reason or another, has decided instead to spend his days beside the company burglar, both of them in their idyllic reshirement. Sometimes they have a child of their own, sometimes they adopt the self-same distant cousin who calls them both Uncle, and sometimes it's just the two of them, but they are always together, and always at peace, at last.

Here's to Bilbo Baggins, who is forever changing in our hands, but who, at his core, will always be courageous, always be impulsive, and always do the right thing, no matter what it may cost him. Who will always be kind, always love a good joke, and always take pleasure in good food and song.

I will go against the grain and say...APOLOGISTS!

I love how people can love their blorbo SO MUCH that they unearth every single reference, watch every frame, analyse every line of dialogue to make sense of them.

I love it when Dwalin is given a weakness for baked goods.

I love it when Russingon is sweet and tender and bittersweet.

I love the Dork Lords.

I love it when people sincerely, passionately, and endlessly love their blorbos and type their fingers raw to explain, put into perspective, and, if not justify, at least somewhat rationalise their most heinous deeds and their most absurd mistakes.

Being the soppy fool that I am, I just bathe in that kind of devotion; it makes me feel alive.

Some years after the Battle of the Five Armies and rebuilding Erebor together, Thorin abdicated the throne, and along with Bilbo (who was Consort under the Mountain) lived happily ever after unto the end of their days. These are snippets of their lives in retirement.

i was thinking about a Very Specific Chapter from the lovely @conkers-theficwriter's bagginshieldtober fic "Stealing Moments, Moments Away" whilst drawing this particular snippet. iykyk haha please please please read it!!!

the line is from one of my favourite post-BotFA oneshot by @storiesforsomeone, "Forever is composed of nows", which also heavily inspired this imagery. i've always wanted to draw a specific scene from the fic and i'm happy i finally had a go at it. please please please read it!!!

the people of Erebor don't really quite know how to take their former King and Consort walking around like a normal old bickering couple but they're happy for them. ♡

i've wanted to draw clingy Thorin for a while haha! he likes to wear Bilbo's quilted robe (particularly when Bilbo is away for Consort duties). even when it doesn't really fit him well. he wears it so often that Bilbo finally had a similar quilted robe made for him which is what he's wearing there. he still likes to hug Bilbo's own robe close especially when he's not around haha

they try and visit the Shire and Bag End often. at some point Bilbo grows a bit self-conscious of his grey hair and Thorin happily takes the role of a loving husband who reminds him he was, is and will always be ever wonderful. ♡

That's an oak tree over there.
