James Mason and Christopher Olsen in Bigger Than Life (Nicholas Ray, 1956) Cast: James Mason, Barbara Rush, Christopher Olsen, Walter Matthau, Robert F. Simon, Roland Winters, Rusty Lane. Screenplay: Cyril Hume, Richard Maibaum, based on a magazine article by Berton Roueche. Cinematography: Joseph MacDonald. Music: David Raksin. Making a domestic drama like Bigger Than Life in CinemaScope is a bit like sending a love letter in a business envelope: The carrier feels wrong for the message. And yet, Nicholas Ray makes it work, partly by acknowledging the irony and playing with it. CinemaScope's outlandish dimensions were designed to put up a fight against the tiny TV screens of the day, which were rapidly becoming the venue for domestic dramas and situation comedies focusing on everyday family life. So Ray makes Bigger Than Life into a kind of companion piece for his Rebel Without a Cause (1955): Both films are antithetical to the portraits of 1950s families on shows like Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver.* Ray also uses CinemaScope for shock value. The wide screen was designed to provide almost more information than the viewer could process. It's hard to hide things from a viewer if the screen is testing the limits of peripheral vision, but Ray and cinematographer Joseph MacDonald manage it beautifully in the scene in which young Richie Avery (Christopher Olsen) frantically hunts through his father's (James Mason) things for the medicine that is causing his father's psychotic behavior. Finally he locates the pills, hidden behind the drawer underneath a mirror on top of a dresser, but as he shoves the drawer back in, the mirror changes angles to reveal his father's face behind him. Although the scene would have worked in a standard format, the wide screen heightens the surprise by almost lulling us into thinking that we could see everything in the room. Bigger Than Life was a flop in its day, despite its ripped-from-the-headlines premise -- Miracle Drug May Be Driving You Crazy -- and one of Mason's best performances. It may have failed because audiences weren't ready for a portrait of the dark side of American family life that wasn't based, like Rebel Without a Cause, on "juvenile delinquency" or, like Peyton Place (Mark Robson, 1957), on sex. Bigger Than Life suggested that we shouldn't trust those we were most inclined to trust: doctors and pharmacology. The physicians in the film are cold, gray men with no bedside manner, stonewalling questions from the patient's wife and imperiously clinging to their expertise. The film also gives us a rather chilling portrayal of conventional attitudes toward mental illness, a stigma far worse than any physical disorder. Ed's wife, Lou, resists the idea that her husband might be psychotic simply because it might endanger his job. Barbara Rush gives a capable performance, most effectively when she snaps under the constant pressure and smashes a bathroom mirror, but the role really needed an actress of more consistent depth and range, someone like Jean Simmons for example, so that Lou doesn't just stand around prettily fretting so much. There are also some nice touches in the otherwise conventional pretty suburban decor of the Averys' house, such as the corroded old water heater in the kitchen, a persistent symbol of the precariousness of the family finances, and the rather dark travel posters of Rome and Bologna that hint at a desire to escape. The "hopeful" ending is also nicely ambiguous.
*The Beaver himself, Jerry Mathers, has a blink-and-you'll-miss-it walk-on bit as one of the schoolkids in Bigger Than Life.

ok here is a helpful guide for Superman fans in Tumblr when referring to different eras of Superman:
Golden Age Superman: Kal-L. The Original. Very cocky. Very charismatic. Couldn’t fly as a kid. Has no solid code against killing. Chaotic Good. Can actually fly now. Has a disturbingly high kill count. Loves Toxic Women (Lois Literally Drugged him one time). Literal WW2 veteran. Not from Kansas. Smallville, East Coast (likely New York). Is now married to Lois. Head of the Daily Star (not Planet). Is Power Girl’s cousin. Is very aggressive. Still saved people from suicide canonically. Canonically religious (Married Lois in a Kryptonian Ceremony). “What trauma?” Seen everyone he loves die.
Silver Age Superman: Kal-El. The Most Popular. Speaks fluent Kryptonese. Total “50’s Dad”. The Strongest. Also the most conformist. Strict Code against killing. Lawful Good. From Smallville. Is canonically Religious (For Rao, his culture’s God). Has multiple cousins. From Smallville, East Coast (likely Maryland this time). Says he wouldn’t hit a woman. Probably has. Sneezed a Solar System Away. Somehow the WEIRDEST one. Also the biggest Prankster. Was Superboy. Was part of the Legion. Saw Pa die. Refuses to acknowledge his trauma. Needs a hug but won’t say it. Works for the Daily Planet. Alan Moore loves him.
Bronze Age Superman: Kal El. Actually just Silver Age Superman but “weaker”. Still the Strongest. Your favorite writer’s favorite Superman. Neutral Good. Originator of the Clex Drama. Met God. Is a pure scientist. Has Three Canon Endings. All of them are literal tragic endings. Is best bros with Batman. Is the Original Nightwing. His cousin is the Second Nightwing. Dick is actually the Third Nightwing. Loves his bro Jimmy Olsen. Smarter than Batman. Made a vow to protect life. Newscaster. Grant Morrison and Mark Waid love him.
Dark Age/Byrne Superman: Clark Kent (Kal El). Still moody. Weakest Superman. Thinks he’s Neutral Good, still Lawful Good. Doesn’t like Krypton. Designer Baby. Best Journalist. Canonically a Porn Star. Died. Came back. Most insecure Superman. Loves ‘Murica. Killed like three people one time. Strict code against killing. “Superman is what I do, Clark is who I am”. Legion who? Superboy who? Supergirl who? Football Star. Pure Sarcasm. Agnostic. People say they hate him but is the reason Smallville, Man of Steel and STAS exist. Literally wants to fuck Jimmy’s Mom. Triangle Era (90’s) Superman: Clark Kent (Kal-El). Is less moody now. Makes more Jokes. Still a drama queen. Smarter. Stronger. Wants to write a Novel. Married Lois. Jimmy is the Best Man. Good Leader. True Lawful Good. The Superman you probably think of the Most. Coolest guy. 90’s Superboy (the best) 90’s Supergirl (Matrix). Was once Gangbuster (Chaotic Neutral). Mind so strong, he killed a psychic in his sleep without knowing it. Christian (Married Lois in a Church). Still knows Kryptonian Kung Fu (Torquasm Vo/Rao). Dick Grayson’s 3rd Dad. Tim Drake’s 4th Dad. Slept with a Mermaid in Collage. Is fun.
Post-Crisis/2000’s Superman: Clark Kent (Kal El) Retcons out the ass. Kara comes back. Knows Boxing now. Knows Kung Fu. Held a Black Hole in his hand. Destroyed Moons. Agnostic. Still Lawful Good. Loves his wife. Loves his adopted son. Chris Kent. His son is Nightwing. His other son is also Nightwing. Walked the earth one time because of war crimes. Saves people from suicide again. Was a Kryptonian general one time. Literal Genius. Smarter than Batman. Is the GOAT. Hates the President.
New 52 Superman: Clark Kent (Kal-El) Very cocky. Very charismatic. Couldn’t fly as a kid. Has no solid code against killing. Chaotic Good to Neutral Good. Lower kill count than Post-Crisis. Loves Toxic Women (Loves the craziest version of Diana). Had a Mid-Life Crisis in his Mid-20’s. Was a Wrestler. Talks like Jason Todd/Wally West/Nightwing/Peter Parker/every mid-20’s white boi in the 90’s-00’s. Everyone hated him. Wasn’t as bad as they say. Is the Andrew Garfield/Spider-Man of Supermen. Killed off without good reason.
Rebirth Superman: Clark Kent (Kal-El). Is literally just Triangle Era Superman. With kids. No Chris tho. Still Lawful Good. Strongest of the Post-Crisis versions. Tries to be a good dad. Is a decent dad. Except for the time where he left Jon alone. So he’s a bad dad. I’m still not over that. Bendis loves him. Says please alot. Watches Anime. Kind of a dead beat. I miss Chris.
if you want summations of other Supermen I didn’t cover you are welcome to ask.

Robin Chronology
??? Anyways so about a year into Batman we get this guy:
Tumblr media
Dick Grayson, most iconic robin, anyways next robin-like character we get is Roberta the Girl Wonder
Tumblr media
She lasts a single issue. A few years later it’s revealed that Bruce was the first Robin
Tumblr media
Then Lance Bruner gets adopted by Bruce due to an arrangement the Bruners had with the Waynes. He dies in his debut appearance
Tumblr media
and then in just over a year, Jimmy tries to prove a point so he becomes the next Robin
Tumblr media
and after all that basically the next things basically stay the same like the next circus boy, who tried a different costume and different names before having Dick’s blessing to use the name
Tumblr media
wait that isn’t canon anymore? uhh anyways the next robin hates rich people. Wait you’re telling me that that didn’t happen, so well anyways what apparently happens is this next robin
Next Robin is this dork
Tumblr media
so things are going fine but then in a ridiculously convoluted plot happens that really should’ve treated this next Robin better.
Tumblr media
So anyways Tim’s back as Robin, but now super duper depressed which makes the super white boy all angsty. But enough about him because the new robin is about to be introduced Batman’s biological son raised as an assassin.
Tumblr media
Before the next more official guys, there was a Batman Impostor named  Charles Nigaff who had a group called Batman’s Soldiers which consisted of Krunch, La Loca, Bookworm, and 3 Robins
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right before the next thing is some weird Scarecrow plot so the next Robin is kinda Selina. But anyways it was all mind tricks and illusions apparently
Tumblr media
then there’s the We Are Robin movement
Tumblr media
then they introduced the “first robin” but either way she’s at least the second (cause Bruce was the first)
Tumblr media
there’s also Jarro
Tumblr media
and Carrie Kelly was set up for Something in main Earth but apparently plans fell through and then there’s Maps Mizoguchi
Tumblr media
there’s also the multiverse, alt timelines and alt future versions

List of the Kent family (aka Martha and Jonathan are parenting and grand parenting these people no matter what you say):
1: Clark Kent. I mean is this even a question?
2: Lana Lang. they don’t care that they aren’t involved anymore, Lana is always welcome. Unless she just recently tried to kryptonite gas the planet.
3: Lois Lane. Again, how would this be a question?
4: Jimmy Olsen. I’ll be honest I know they love him, but he’s 100% the person they make fun of behind his back like proper midwesterners. Yes we all have that one person.
5: Linda Danvers: They don’t know if they see her as a niece, daughter or granddaughter, but they love her so much.
6: The Danvers: Have you read the comics with these guys in them? They’re awesome and they helped with so much.
7: Kara’s Kryptonian parents if they aren’t in Kandor.
8: Karen Starr: They don’t see her much, but if she ever needs a break they have an apple pie ready for her.
9: Mon-El: Not sure where’s he’s at currently in comics, but if he’s not dying, he’s welcome.
10: Chris Kent: Their first for sure grandchild who they taught their child how to forge documents for upon meeting him.
11: Kon-El: He doesn’t see Superman as dad, but these three see each other as grandparents and grandson. The only argument I will accept on this is if you hc him as trans or non-binary.
12: Connor Kent (YJ show): He sees Clark as an absentee father, but these two were never absent once they found out about each other.
13: Jon Kent: They love this little bundle of joy.
14: Jonathan Kent (older Jon, don’t ask it’s a lot): They’re a little disappointed in him, but they love him and understand what he did and that he’s trying. But he’s, like Kara aren’t allowed plus ones cause they have awful taste in ppl.
15: Maik-El (Superboynfrom RoTS movie): Once he’s taken in by the Danvers and punching Jon, they welcome him with open arms.
16: Thara (possibly): I need to read more to make this calling.
17: Kong Kenan: They had Clark bring him over when they heard about the new Superman in China. He was a little overwhelmed but has since warmed up and blames Ma Kent for that extra five pounds (not like it’s muscle, but blame the pie.)
Obviously others are invited such as the Bats, the Wonders, J’onn, etc, but these ones are their family. If I missed any other Supers please let me know. Superlad might get added along with Matrix, but I have some reading to do before that.
