"Simple Kind of Life" is a song by American rock band No Doubt. Written by lead singer Gwen Stefani in late 1999 for the group's fourth album, Return of Saturn, the song contrasts Stefani's desire to settle down and start a family with fellow rocker Gavin Rossdale while still keeping her commitment to the band.
"Simple Kind of Life" was released as the album's first single for the holiday season of 1999. Peaking at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100, #18 on the Adult Top 40 and number 14 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
The lyrics of "Simple Kind of Life" discuss Stefani's relationship with  Rossdale but also bandmate Tony Kanal whom she dated for seven years until he wanted to break up. She describes wanting to settle down, get married, and have children. In the final verse, she even dreams about how her life would be if there were a mistake in her birth control and she became pregnant.  But in the song she ultimately decides that settling down is just a fantasy for her since freedom and independence is more important to her. In real life, she would marry Rosdale just two years later and ultimately have three children with him.
The song was recorded with no rehearsals, a first for the band. Adrian Young's drum parts were mixed through low fidelity filters to get the feel of a lo-fi power ballad. It opens with a four-measure intro, which features the Dm9-Cmaj7 modal chord progression used for the song's three verses. After the third chorus comes a coda, which closes the song as Stefani repeats the phrase "a simple kind of life" ad libitum while the song fades. It received positive reviews from music critics, who noted the song's somber melody and raw but honest lyrics. Rolling Stone described it as being "at once grand, fragile and very, very sad".

Buck Privates (1941)
Slicker Smith and Herbie Brown are sidewalk peddlers who hawk neckties out of a suitcase. They are chased by a cop and duck into a movie theater, not realizing that it is now being used as an Army enlistment center. Believing that they are signing up for theater prizes, they end up enlisting instead.
Meanwhile, spoiled playboy Randolph Parker and his long-suffering valet, Bob Martin, also enlist at the theater. Randolph expects his influential father to pull some strings so he can avoid military service. Bob, on the other hand, takes his military obligations in stride. Tensions between the two men escalate further with the introduction of Judy Gray, a camp hostess and friend of Bob's upon whom Randolph sets his sights.
At boot camp, Slicker and Herbie are mortified to discover that Collins, the policeman who chased them, is now their drill instructor. Randolph, meanwhile, learns that his father will not use his influence on his behalf, believing that a year in the Army will do Randolph some good. For all the difficulties, life at camp turns out not to so bad, since The Andrews Sisters appear at regular intervals to sing sentimental or patriotic tunes (including "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy") and Herbie continues to foul up with little consequence.
Although he is an expert marksman, Randolph skips an army shooting match in order to spend the afternoon with Judy. The company loses the match and a sizeable amount of money they had bet, causing them to resent him even more. However, during a war game exercise, Randolph redeems himself by saving Bob and coming up with a ruse to win the sham battle for his company. He is finally accepted by his unit and wins Bob's and Judy's admiration in the process. He learns that he's been accepted to Officer Training School but initially refuses, believing that his father's political influence was responsible. However, his commanding officer assures him that his training record (along with recommendations from his company) factored in the decision. Bob has also been offered an appointment to OTS, and Judy announces that she will be joining them as a hostess at the training facility. Meanwhile, Smitty and Herbie eagerly accept an invitation to shoot dice with Collins, but Herbie ends up (literally) losing his pants.
