The fuller Darcy next-gen headcanon, while I'm at it:
Elizabeth Jane (Lizzy) Darcy. She's quiet, withdrawn, dutiful, and intense. Strong eldest daughter vibes. She's very handsome and expected (not by her parents so much as their wider social circle) to be charming and witty to go with it, like her mother, and is neither; she low-grade resents her while also idolizing her. Gets on well with her father and most of her aunts, but rarely confides in anyone.
Edward Darcy (named for Mr Gardiner and Lord —). He's sensible, down-to-earth, loyal, earnest, and easy-going. Very much wants to live up to his strong sense of responsibility as The Heir. Most people like him well enough without having a strong impression of his feelings or personality. Gets along well with both parents, but is slightly intimidated by his father's sterling reputation and force of presence.
Christopher Darcy (Kit, named after Darcy's father in my headcanons). He's high-spirited, clever, friendly, and very content in his own skin, more so than any of his siblings. Like Edward, he's easy-going and practical, but more energetic. He can be a bit careless and outspoken, even impertinent, while also able to pull on a touch of hauteur when annoyed. His spirits and confidence can make him exasperating at times, but also endearing to pretty much everyone around him, including both parents.
Georgiana Darcy. She has quite a bit in common with her brother Kit; she's not quite as comfortable with herself, but she's at least as fearless and impulsive (Voted Child Most Likely To Give Her Caretakers Headaches). She's quick-witted and can get carried away with her own ideas, but is also gregarious and kind, and readily befriended the family's shy charity case, her cousin Fanny Price Bella Wickham.
Honorable mention next-gen characters: Bess Wickham, the most driven, intelligent, and calculating of the Wickham children; George Wickham, her closest sibling, less ambitious but more careless; Martha Bingley, a bubbly, inquisitive, matchmaking middle Bingley child; and Sarah Gardiner, born a few months after P&P ends, thoughtful, pragmatic, and courteous.

Rewatching 'Private Practice': "Homeward Bound"
In this ep of #PrivatePractice, Violet continues sleeping with Sheldon and Pete as everyone deals with a family with CF.
As a new segment on WhatSamWatches, I will now be doing more informal reviews/commentaries on what I’m watching. And it’ll include shows I’ll be rewatching just because I feel like it. I did a review on Private Practice not that long ago but I’m binging the show from the beginning all over again, anyway. So since I rewatched the 11th episode of season two last time, we’re now onto the 12th…

Early-July 2022
Thomas Christopher Greene once stated in a book, "Time can be slowed if you live deliberately. If you stop and watch sunsets. If you spend time sitting on porches listening to the woods. If you give in to the reality of the seasons."
But right now, time doesn't slow down for you as you sit hours and hours long on the window ledge of your best friend's dorm living room. You can feel the hardness of the wall right at your back, your knees pulled up tightly on your chest, arms wrapped loosely around it.
You gave in to the reality of the season though, summer nights are always wonderful for some people, however, these past summer nights have not been made for you as you have spent them waiting patiently for a certain someone to arrive safely in the comforts of their room.
Your hair shifts lightly with the swift motions of your head turning upon hearing the quiet sound of keys and profanities right behind the door.
Altering your body out of the ledge soundlessly, you mutter, "Where were you?"
"Jesus, you scared me." Wanda's soft voice echoes throughout her dorm, clearly having the knowledge that her loud voice wouldn't wake up her already sleeping roommate.
She huffs out, slender fingers going through her unruly hair, "You're here again?"
You watch her quietly, nodding your head in resignation as you walk past her, "Just wanted to see if you arrived safely." you say.
Wanda. Wanda has been doing this for the past months. Going out late, going home late. Missing your friendly dates, the sitcom days, the months of months plans the both of you made last year was now forgotten, thrown out like a piece of antique.
Useless and vintage.
You didn't know what changed.
"I'm not a child, you know." she harshly replies, accent coming out strong and venomous. You halted your steps, shoulders tense at the voice she was using at you.
"You don't have to go here, bother Darcy, and wait for me to arrive like some obsessed best friend who can't seem to live without hanging out with me. Stop being so clingy."
Okay.
"I just wanted to see if you arrived safely," she mocked, her phony voice skirting around the corners of your breaking heart. "Bullshit. We both know you're just afraid to be alone. Well, guess what Y/N, I am sick of that. I am sick of you."
Ever felt like someone stabbing you right in your chest, okay, wrong. This doesn't feel like stabbing to you, this felt like a bomb going off, and the pieces of your heart fly in different directions and it doesn't stop there. The pain continues on as someone's pair of hands and feet crush every tiny piece laying steadily on the floor.
That pair of hands and feet are Wanda's.
"You're not gonna say anything?" she says exasperatedly, face warp in aggravation as she stares at your back.
You have many things to say to her. Many unsaid things that you know will go deaf in her perfectly working ears. You want to say how she's been a shitty best friend ever since she met that dude at a party, how you are grasping at that tiny piece of friendship that you knew is being broken piece by piece as the time goes by, how when you look at her, you don't see her, you see a stranger living in the body of your best friend. Of the one you dearly love so much you would go into deeper depths just to see her happy.
You wanted to say that but instead, you utter these words, "What do you want me to say?"
Wanda groans, "Anything! Just— I don't know, say something." she says desperately, trying to make you understand something that you clearly can't comprehend.
"I'm gonna go." You take a step forward, towards the door only to be stopped by her tight grip on your arm.
"You can't just go."
"Wanda, I can't fucking understand you right now. Are you drunk? Are you high?" you snapped at her, voice in an edge as you turn to stare right at her face.
She opens her mouth to say something but you are clearly not done with your words.
"What do you want me to fucking say? That you've been such a bitch lately? That, what, the old woman I met on the bus weeks ago felt more like a best friend than you ever did for these past months? What do you want me to fucking say?" you finally declare, your brows furrowed, jaw tense with fist clenched tightly against your palm.
Wanda loosens the grip on your arm as she drinks in every word you have said to her. Not wanting to stare longer at the realization that is coming to her face, your back faces her again as your hand clutches the doorknob and latches it open for you to walk away.
"Y/N, wait—"
You whip your body fast to glower at her, "No, you listen. I fucking don't know what has gotten into you to treat me like this. We were doing fine then I just woke up with you ignoring me. I did this because I care and the friendship I have with you matters."
The timbres of your voice quiver, undertones of heartache can be heard in the staggering of your hardened voice, "But fucking shit, Wanda. You could've just told me you're tired of being in this friendship. I would have respected that, you don't have to make me feel so worthless."
Watching the light trembles of her lips and the brave step she took closer to you, you can see the morphing of hurt flashing right at her face. You're confused. She intentionally spurted those words at you, how come she has the guts to look so anguished?
"Y/N, I just—"
But you are already walking away, time slowing down with your breathing rigid and labored. Your steps are filled with regret at how you have thrown those words at her. You didn't mean it, as much as you want to mourn for whatever has gone downhill for the both of you, what you have said to her was the truth and you didn't really care right now as you are greeted with a magnificent vision of the sun slowly rising for the world to see.
Funny, you should have listened to Thomas Greene and spent your time sitting on porches listening to the sound of the woods instead of waiting till the sun rises just to make sure your best friend arrived safely.

Is Darcy byronic?
No.
Here is a nice definition from Wikipedia: Historian and critic Lord Macaulay described the character as "a man proud, moody, cynical, with defiance on his brow, and misery in his heart, a scorner of his kind, implacable in revenge, yet capable of deep and strong affection
I don't think Darcy is a Byronic hero, if anything he's a subversion of Byronic. While he is proud, cynical, and capable of strong affection, he turns out not to be vengeful. Darcy's implacable resentment towards Wickham is built on a firm foundation and he hasn't acted on it! I think Byronic!Darcy would have hunted Wickham down and killed him. (Willoughby is also totally a fake Byronic hero, his "deep and strong affection" is false). I also don't think Darcy has misery in his heart most of the time.
Classic examples of Byronic heroes are Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights and Edward Rochester from Jane Eyre. A modern example would be Christopher Nolan's Batman.
But I'm no expert on Byronic heroes and I happen to know that a huge Byron fan recently read Pride & Prejudice, if they have time to address this (@burningvelvet)

Pride and Prejudice
Classic and loose adaptions from 1940, 1967, 1980, 1995, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019
The second of Jane Austen’s novels, first published in 1813, is the most often adapted, inspiring various different takes on it. The ones pictures above are detailed below:
Pride and Prejudice (1940 Film)

Lizzie’s videos amount to 100 episodes + 10 Q&A, but shorter series enrich the story by offering other characters’ perspectives, most notably Lydia’s (and also Georgiana’s). A playlist at Pemberley Digital’s Youtube channel features them all in order.
The series has also been adapted into a book, The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet (2014), and spawned a sequel novel, The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet (2015).

The story takes inspiration from all 6 of Austen’s major novels (plus Lady Susan), but mostly from Pride and Prejudice. Others stars include Chandelly Braz as Mariana Benedito (Marianne Dashwood) and Anajú Dorigon as Cecília Benedito (Catherine Morland).
Features 100 episodes in the International cut. The telenovela has been broadcast in other countries and languages (such as Spanish) but as far as I know, not in English.
Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta (2019 TV Film)
Loose adaption set in modern Atlanta, USA. All-black cast. Written by Tracy McMillan, directed by Rhonda Baraka
Starring Tiffany Hines as Elizabeth Bennet, Juan Antonio as Will Darcy, Raney Branch as Jane Bennet, Brad James as Charles Bingley, Reginae Carter as Lydia Bennet, Carl Anthony Payne as Rev. Collins, among others.
*****
Personal favorites: 2005, then 1995. But also: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Orgulho e Paixão
I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while it’s been a while since I’ve seen Bride and Prejudice, it’s got Indian musical numbers so c’mon, one gotta watch it.
Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.
In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe that’s cause I’m a sucker for P&P.

Movies I watched in March 2024
Under the Cherry Moon (1986)** I'm Not There (2007)*** Jingle All the Way (1996)* Three Graves to Cairo (1943)** Hitchcock (2012) ** Silent Partner (1978)** Possession (2002)** Oppenheimer (2023)** Oscar Wilde (1960)** Turning Point: The Cold War and the Bomb (2024)** Anselm (2023)*** 24 Hour Party People (2002)** Two of Us (1999)*** Remains of the Day (1993)*** Doubt (2008)*** Dune (1984)*** Dune Part II (2024)***
Under the Cherry Moon (1986)** Absolute bobbins of a script is still beautiful to look at, very gay and of course mainly a vehicle for Prince's music. Under the Cherry Moon was the follow up to Purple Rain. It was a box office flop, a critical failure that earned Razzie nominations, but is a worth another look. Prince and Jerome Beton are sex workers with a rich female clientele on the French Riviera, the kind of career that only exists in movies. Kristin Scott Thomas makes her film debut as the debutante who comes between the friends and threatens to part them. Prince's death scene, harkens back to Camille with Prince playing Garbo. Like Garbo, Prince was happy to exploit his own androgyny and like Garbo, he was doomed to only explore that in a way that could be squeezed into heteronormative films.
I'm not There: (2007)*** A fascinating look at Bob Dylan, dividing him into six personae played by six different actors. Haynes uses different film styles, the Cate Blanchett mid Sixties Dylan of Bringing it All Back Home and Blonde on Blonde is matched in style with the black and white cinematography of D.A. Pennebaker's Don't Look Back. It also has elements of the Italian Surrealists like Felinni or Antonioni with a scoch of A Hard Day's Night. The soundtrack is particularly good, avoiding for the most part, the licensing pitfalls that plagued Haynes' Bowie biopic, Velvet Goldmine. Some of the most effective moments of I'm Not There, pair landscape shots with Dylan's music. Given the catalogue and the array of talent, Haynes has gathered, one perhaps expects a bit more , but then that has always been Dylan's nature, he's mysterious and aloof, leaving us wanting more.
Jingle All the Way (1996)* We watched this Christmas movie in March because we recently learned that part of it was filmed at my son's elementary school. It had Jake Lloyd somehow being more annoying than he was in the Phantom Menace as a bonus. Phil Hartman got dragged into this unfunny mess as well.
Three Graves to Cairo (1943)** Tense war time drama about a British officer who gets trapped behind the lines and ends up hiding out in a hotel working as a waiter for Field Marshall Rommel. Billy Wilder ratchets up the tension, his script giving all the best lines to Rommel, played by Erich Von Stroheim who really owns the film though Anne Baxter and Franchot Tone nominally "star."
Hitchcock (2012)** Hichcock's struggle to make Pyscho dramatized with fantasies where he hangs out with Ed Gein, while Alma Hitchcock gets involved in a Hitchcockian romance with a hack writer. Scarlett Johannson plays an almost deliberately obtuse Janet Leigh and James Darcy captures pre-Psycho Tony Perkins. It's a bit silly but I'll never turn down Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins in anything. This has a slight, arch feel to it, like many of Hitchcock's pictures, but lurking underneath are the ordinary hates and passions of a man who fears being left behind, at the height of his career. For his long-suffering wife's part, she too feels she's being replaced by the young actresses that Hitchcock is obsessed with at the moment. The conclusion is sweet enough for the Hayes office: husband and wife rediscover the magic of their working relationship, which was always the rock upon which their relationship was built.
The Silent Partner (1978)** With Elliott Gould, Christopher Plummer and Susannah York in the cast, this should have been better. Decent heist plot that devolves into slasher film . Christopher Plummer takes on the dubious mantels of playing a villain in a piss-poor American action film and a cross-dressing murderer.
Possession (2002)** A rather thin adaptation of a great novel, A.S. Byatt's story of two modern academics who disover a previous hidden romance between two Victorian poets. The film lacks the poetry of the novel, which I think is necessary for the story to have its full impact, but the film is full of plenty of jabs at academia as well as burning passions. Gweneth Paltrow and Aaron Ecklund play the young couple, while Jeremy Northam and Jennifer Ehle play the poet/lovers. Tom Hollander has a small but memorable part as does Toby Stephens.
Oppenheimer (2023)** My least favorite half of Barbenheimer still damn good and the physics nerd in me reveled in seeing my dead physicist boyfriends on screen. There are better films about Oppenheimer's life (BBC did a mini series starring Sam Waterston and it's on youtube) but something about the dreamy quality of Nolan's film captures that quantum mystery kinda vibe and put it in a blockbuster package. Cool.
Oscar Wilde (1960)** Preceded the landmark film Crisis by one year, without the world shaking honesty that film managed, around the topic of homosexuality and the law. Both films hinged on blackmail of a gay man but Oscar Wilde is careful to skirt around explicit mentions of sexuality, using tricks like showing the dictionary definition of "sodomy" briefly on camera. More was needed and more was achieved a year later. Ralph Richardson contributes to the courtroom scenes admirably and Morley is a terrific Wilde, who would rather make point for style than save himself from prison.
Turning Point: The Cold War and the Bomb (2024)** Fascinating background to our current situation, most of which is terrifying and now I'm worrying about the bomb again. I took off a star for the sheer number neo-con/Reaganite talking heads in this...
Anselm (2023)*** Wim Wenders stirring mostly visual documentary about Anselm Kiefer, a German artist who has explored his childhood memories of post war Germany in a frank and intimidatingly in your face way, on a massive scale combining sculpture, painting and physical spaces, many of which he has engineered himself. As a middle aged person who feels estranged and terrified to look more deeply into her own childhood, Anselm was something to sit with for two hours.
24 Hour Party People (2002)** Steve Coogan plays Tony Wilson, the Manchester TV personality and club owner who helped launch the careers of Joy Division, New Order and The Happy Mondays. Coogan has a tendency to make all his characters Alan Partridge and this is no exception, but it kind of works? It did more to get me to listen to Joy Division that numerous goth roommates ever could...
Two of Us (1999)*** I can't stop watching this made for VH-1 fanfiction of a movie starring Jared Harris and Aidan Quinn as John Lennon and Paul McCartney, dramatizing a probably apocryphal tale that John and Paul met up in NYC in the 70s when Paul was playing Madison Square Garden. Pure fluff and nonsense. I need it like air.
Remains of the Day (1993)*** Revisiting this old favorite and finding that it's kind of pacey and funny for a Merchant Ivory pic. The movie that made me love Tony Hopkins as an actor, his Stevens is really such a fascinating, ostensibly tragic character and yet there is a weird kind of triumph to living one's life so completely to a schedule and a code, and yet never being to eliminate desire and feeling.
Doubt (2008)*** This is the second Philip Seymour Hoffman movie I've watched in the last few months that has left me utterly haunted. Like The Master, Hoffman creates a villain who charms the audience at the same time you know that he's probably done unforgivable things and is only at the start of a long career of doing unforgivable things. Meryl Streep gives a heavy handed performance (Streep never met a colloquial accent that she didn't wear like a Groucho Marx nose) that certainly gets the point across that unpleasant people usually aren't the bad guys you want them to be. Amy Adams plays a naive young nun who, like the audience, is left wondering what to believe.
Dune (1984)*** Unapologetic Lynch Dune lover here. I love the cheesy acting, the wild tonal shifts, and the attempts to put this sprawling multibook epic in the Star Wars shaped box that the studio wanted him to use. My favorite scene has become Lynch's cameo, he seems so happy just pretending to be a spice miner, in his little spice mining suit in his little unconvincing space ship. I love him and this whole stupid mess. Sorry Frank Herbert.
Dune Part II (2024)*** My prediction is that Villeneuve's probable trilogy will--like so many franchises--peak in the second film. The first part was a slow-moving visual feast, that only hinted at the potential of this cast. Things actually start moving in the plot and Chalamet's Paul does his best to cope. Unlike MacLachlan's avuncular Atreides, who takes being a Messiah as just being another Tuesday of being the Universe's Most Gifted Child, he actually seems conflicted. Zendaya continues to utterly dominate every time she's on screen. Can Channi be the focus of the movie? Please?

“Honey, we’re home!”
At the sound of Buck’s voice, Eddie lifts his head from the study guide that has long since shifted into some indecipherable script. A warmth filters through him from the words. Buck’s said those words hundreds of times over the years as a comfortable tease to those around him. He says them when he goes to the firehouse. He says them when he gets back to his loft, even though the both of them know it’s empty.
It’s the first time he’s said them since their kiss.
He listens to his boys in the other room. By the sounds, Christopher’s in a mood. He can hear the rapid staccato of the boy’s crutches on the floor as he stalks away from the front door. It’s probably nothing. Hormones. He’ll ask if Buck knows anything when the other man makes his way to the kitchen.
“Christopher? Backpack in your room before video games. You know the rules.” Buck’s voice is kind, but firm, and Eddie’s stomach does a small flip.
Eddie listens for the groaning huff that he’s come to learn is part of raising a thirteen year old. Christopher does not disappoint, but the click of his crutches matches the beating in Eddie’s heart and he’s just so.
Happy.
“Someone’s in a mood,” he observes when Buck enters the kitchen. The other man nods and peeks down the hall to make sure the coast is clear before planting a small kiss at the crown of Eddie’s head.
“Apparently Stacey told Darcy told Francine told Erika that Chris said he would take her to their upcoming dance.”
Eddie looks up. “Which one’s Erika?”
“The new interest.” Buck pulls open the fridge and grabs a beer. “You want one?”
Eddie shakes his head. “I’m studying. Thanks though.”
“How’s that going?” Buck turns the chair next to Eddie so he can straddle it. His left foot idly toes at Eddie’s feet under the table.
Eddie sighs. “It’s a lot. There’s a lot to learn, but Tommy’s been a great help, and everyone over there has been so welcoming.”
“Everyone at the 118 misses you,” Buck says before he spins the lid off of the beer and takes a drink. “The new guy is working out though… mostly.” When they had decided to give this a go, Buck and Eddie together instead of Buck and Eddie as friends, it had come with some sacrifices. Because of regulations, they couldn’t be on the same team anymore, so it was either split all of their shifts, or have one of them transfer so they could maintain at least a semblance of a matching shift.
They had opted for the latter, and Tommy had pulled strings to get Eddie to LAFD Air Ops. And while Buck misses seeing Eddie at work, he loves seeing him here after work. Some sacrifices are worth it.
Eddie looks up from his notes, a teasing fire in his brown eyes. “Be nice to him, Buck.” After a brief bit of silence, he laughs and adds, “But not too nice. I’m not interested in sharing.”
Buck laughs, cheeks pink with warm embarrassment. Eddie wants to kiss along the rosy hue. But that would involve telling Christopher. And of everyone knowing, him being the last, Eddie’s scared of Christopher’s approval most of all.
“Speaking of Tommy, I invited him over to watch the fight the weekend after next. That okay?
“I think so,” Buck says. And Eddie already knows what’s coming before the next sentence exits the other man’s mouth. “Let me check the calendar.”
Buck pulls the upgraded calendar from its spot beneath the takeout menus to Eddie’s favorite places and sets it on the table. From the drawer next to the fridge, he grabs a series of pens, color coded to each of them. Eddie was blue, like Buck’s eyes. Buck was purple, one of his favorite colors, and Carla was a lovely shade of red.
Eddie loves calendar Buck almost as much as he loves clipboard Buck. Not that he’s going to admit that to the other man. But watching Buck make notes and annotations, block out their shifts with color coordinated bars along the top of the days, and sort who was taking Christopher to what activity was probably the sexiest thing he’s ever seen.
Buck’s even kept some of the old terminology. Eddie’s eyes dance over every other Thursday. BBPUG w/Tommy Kinard. Circled. Buck hasn’t gone since that fateful day. But he still marks it so that it’s accounted for in their daily lives.
“So what’s the verdict?” Eddie asks.
“I have a shift that day, so you’ll have to deal with scowly and moody.”
“A chore I think I can manage,” Eddie laughs. He looks over the calendar again before Buck picks it up, and his eyes fall on a particular date in both Blue and Purple. The text read simply the talk. “What’s that?”
Buck follows Eddie’s eyes. “Oh. That. I figured we could take Christopher out and bribe him with ice cream and dinner before telling him that ‘his Buck’ has also become ‘your Buck’.”
“My Buck, huh?” He reaches under the table to circle his thumb against Buck’s knee. It’s such a simple gesture, but the absurdity of hiding and planning on bribing a thirteen year old kid to be okay with your new boyfriend makes Eddie laugh. But he loves how much Buck loves Christopher.
And over time, with pens in Red and Purple and Blue, the Diaz household slowly shifts into the Diaz-Buckley household.

In keeping with my "What if this other story but literati?" tendencies, here's a modern Pride & Prejudice AU.
**
The Bennett Sisters
A literati pride and prejudice AU that I have no intention of actually writing.
Setting:
A city in 2020s America. The Bennett sisters have been musically talented their whole lives, but it took being stuck at home during the pandemic for them to start a band. They started out playing shows online, then small outdoor gigs. They have a small but growing fan base.
Characters:
The sisters:
Jane Bennett, played by Lane Kim, drummer extraordinaire
Elizabeth Bennett, played by Rory Gilmore, bassist, co-song-writer
Mary Bennett, played by Paris Gellar, keyboardist, co-song-writer
Lydia Bennett, played by Louise Grant, lead singer
Kitty Bennett, played by Madeline Lynn, guitar
Other characters:
Mrs Bennett, played by Lorelei Gilmore, their ambitious manager who wants her daughters to succeed.
Mr Bennett, played by Christopher Hayden, a music company executive who works with his daughters as well as many other bands. A largely absentee father who nonetheless made sure the house was full of music
Charles Bingley, played by Dave Rygalski, an up-and-coming artist who comes to town to record his next album
Fitzwilliam (Will) Darcy, played by Jess Mariano, Bingley’s best friend and successful singer-songwriter
Wickham, played by Tristan DuGrey, will threaten the band’s future when he convinces Lydia to run off with him
Mr Collins, played by Logan Huntzburger, a businessman running a popular music streaming service that is buying out the music company Mr Bennett works for. Refers to art as “content”
Mr and Mrs Gardiner, played by Sookie St James and Jackson Belleville, take Elizabeth on a short vacation
