Steve watches you snuggle into his pillow, almost clinging to the cushion wearing his scent.

The people who locked you away tried to condition you with a new drug. While your mind works again, just like your sharp tongue your body still feels the drugs influencing your system. Bruce said you will feel the influence for a few more weeks, maybe even months.

“Tired,” you whine, teeth shattering again. “Cold…alpha.” You don’t recognize you used Steve’s presentation, but his heart fluttered for a moment. “Please.”

“What do you need, doll?” You smile at the pet name, looking at Steve, silently asking him to hold you as he did so often during your nightmares or only to warm you. “If you want me to warm you up, I’ll do so, Y/N.”

“Please, alpha,” you purr this time, nuzzling your cheek into the hand cupping your cheek. “Need you. You’re so warm.” The strong and independent woman in you would hate your behavior, but the wounded and vulnerable omega is seeking Steve’s closeness.

“I will ask Bruce and Tony to check your blood samples again,” you nod, reaching out for Steve. Only he gave you comfort and treated you like a human being in the last two years. It’s no surprise you cling to him.

“Cold,” demanding his closeness you tug at Steve’s wrist. “Can you stay?” Steve fights to keep the purrs in his throat but you heard the deep guttural sound leave his lips. “Alpha,” you snarl now pointing toward Steve’s usual spot.

“Wait, Doll,” he’s rounding the bed to lie on his side of the large bed. Steve barely has the time to lie down before you carefully crawl toward him to curl in his side. “I’m sorry for what they did to you, Y/N.” Steve hates that a strong woman, a fighter like you got reduced to a frightened girl.

“I hate how I feel, Steve,” you sniffle, hiding your face in the palms of your hands. “My instinct and mind fight a battle I can’t win. My body is fighting me too and I’m so confused.”

“I know,” he whispers, holding out his arms to let you decide if you want to lie on his chest. “Bruce and Tony will try anything to find out what kind of damage the drugs did to your metabolism, your physis and something I didn’t get,” Steve tries not to talk about the things Bruce told you this morning.

“You mean my stronger heat? That it could kill me next time it breaks?” you snuggle into Steve’s chest, sighing deeply when he wraps his arms around your body. “They wanted to condition me at all cost, I guess.”

“That’s,” Steve’s jaw ticks, his nostrils flare and you need to nuzzle his cheek to calm the angry alpha. “They wanted to force you to mate with any alpha. That’s…that’s…”

“Steve,” whispering his name you place one hand onto his racing heart. “I feel safe with you. Maybe it’s because you came into my room and didn’t hurt me or as you are a good man but,” purring you look at the hand on his heart, “I know you would never take advantage of me.”

“Doll, of course not,” he pants heavily, looking at you in his arms. “Please, I would never force you to do anything you don’t want to do. I would hate myself for taking advantage of you, ‘mega.” Your presentation on his lips rather a purr than a word Steve covers your bodies with a warm blanket.

“You see, Bruce and doctor Cho, they said I will need an alpha taking care of me, maybe even claim me,” nervously chewing on your lower lip you look up at Steve, whining. “I want you to be that alpha.”

“Y/N,” Steve’s heart beats even faster when you lean over him to press a soft kiss to his lips. “I could never use you. I want you to choose a mate you love, the one you deserve.”

“I deserve you, alpha,” you hide your face in Steve’s neck, inhale his calming scent deeply before you speak again. “I want you, Steve. The moment you brought me out of this room I knew, you are different. If you don’t want me, want to claim me, I’ll understand.”

“It’s not like that, Y/N,” believing Steve only tries to shelter your feelings you push the tears away. “Doll, I’m not sure that you will be happy with me.”

“I get it, Steve. No one wants damaged goods. An alpha will always choose a healthy omega,” your voice cracks when you want to roll off Steve’s body.

“No, baby girl,” the new pet name makes your heart flutter and a warm feeling spreads through your belly. Steve cups your face, looking at you. “I want you, doll. Y/N, I would do anything to be your alpha. I wanted to give you a choice, that’s all.”

“I’ll always choose you, alpha…”

“So, check this. We dug a bit deeper,” Tony watches you curl on Steve’s lap, clinging to the alpha offering safety.

You got better over the last days, but your instinct still won’t let you leave Steve for longer than a few hours.

“Fill us in, Tony,” Steve looks at the monitor, a frown on his face. “The sanctuary? I thought we wanted to leave them alone. Sharon wasn’t there and according to Y/N the omegas seek shelter at this place on free terms.”

“We thought so too,” Bruce sighs deeply, glancing at you. “Let’s say Tony and F.R.I.D.A.Y. hacked into their system. According to the footage, Y/N was out cold most of the time, separated from the omegas. The ones she met already got conditioned, Steve.”

“What?” Lips quivering you look at the monitor, watching another woman scream for help, ramming her fists into the wall, just like you did during the first weeks. “I believed they are all happy. I told you to not intervene and now it’s my fault they suffered…”

“Doll, you didn’t know. Those people pumped you full of drugs, manipulated you for almost two years. How could you have known they tricked you, Y/N?” you nod, still, tears run down your cheeks. “It’s not your fault.”

“Natasha suggested to sneak in, get the omega on the footage out, and see if she knows more about the ‘sanctuary’. She came to this place a few weeks ago, so the girl can still remember most of what happened,” Tony explains, watching you cling to his friend. “We took blood samples of Sarah too. They didn’t get the chance to drug her yet.”

“Phase 1, food and warm clothes, protection, safety,” mumbling the words you look at Tony. “I guess she was in Phase 2, no food for a few days, changing of clothes only once a week. Isolation. Loud music in the middle of the night.”

“Exactly,” Natasha enters the room, a confused omega by her side. “Sarah confirmed the reason why she hit the wall with her fists was the music.”

“Will she tell us more?” Sarah nods, shyly glancing at you in Steve’s arms. “Don’t worry, Sarah. I’m Steve, this is Y/N, she was at the sanctuary too. You already met Tony, Natasha, and Bruce. Over there that’s Rhodey.” Steve speaks slow, using his soothing voice to calm the omega.

“Hi,” the scared omega chokes out. “I’m Sarah, thank you for saving me.” You sniffle at the bruises at her arm, hiding your face in Steve’s neck.

“This is my fault, Steve. If only I told you and the others to check on the sanctuary.”

“We did, darling,” Tony nods at Steve who tries to soothe you. “Bruce and I checked on the people behind the sanctuary, their organization, and how to infiltrate the building. We needed a plan to invade that place.”

“We should listen to Sarah before we come up with a plan, Tony. I think no one listened to Y/N, Sarah and the other omegas for a damn long time,” Natasha pulls a chair for Sarah, encourages her to tell the remaining Avengers her story.

“It’s a crime they forced you to stay! We should,” Clint grumbles. “Isn’t there anything we can do? There is no time to waste. They drugged Y/N, tortured Sarah. I bet the other omegas are no better.”

“The government will argue they did it to keep her safe, Clint,” Bruce argues. “We have to come up with more than two hurt omegas. You know how they like to hide things. Let’s make a plan, listen to Sarah, and smash faces later…”

“I saw what happened to the ‘rescued’ omegas firsthand, Mr. Barton,” Sarah’s voice trembles when she looks at you and Steve who has his hands on your back, subtle sniffing at your hair.

“Just Clint, we are all friends here,” Clint huffs, giving Sarah a grin. “What do you mean with firsthand?”

“A friend of mine, she was alone after he alpha got dusted. One day she decided to go to the sanctuary to feel safe,” all eyes are glued to Sarah when she wipes a few tears away.

“They found a new alpha, a strong one according to the guy in the suit. She was happy to have a mate who wants pups but he wanted a slave to use whenever he needed to put his knot into a hole. A few months later I found her on the street, half-dead, beaten up and bloody,” you look at your broken wrist, knowing you could’ve ended up like Sarah’s friend too.

“What happened? Did the guy punished?” Natasha gulps audibly watching Sarah’s face turn into a grimace of anger and disgust.

“Punished. Yes. The guy. No,” Sarah’s eyes sadden remembering the way the sanctuary treated her friend. “They sent her back to him unbeknownst by me. I left my friend at that place after they assured me they’ll take care of her.”

“I assume it did not end well,” sarcasm dripping from his lips Tony slam the fist into the wall when Sarah tells him the alpha killed her friend and that after she went to the police they captured her too. “They pretend to protect the omegas and hurt them instead or worse.”

Tony grits his teeth looking around the room. “Alright, we can’t undo what Thanos did, not yet. What we can do is go in there, free the omegas and kick some asses,” Tony grunts. “Let me check the blueprints and make a plan. We will strike soon…”

“What will happen after you freed the omegas? There is no place for them, not a safe one,” whispering the words you try to keep your eyes open.

“Tony has an idea or two, doll,” Steve whispers as you scoot closer to him on the couch. “You should sleep now, tomorrow we will explain the plan to you, promised.”

“Do you think the omegas will be happy we invade their safe place? I am still unsure if we will cause more damage than do any good this time,” while you let Steve’s words sink you shake your head.

“Anything is better than what happened to me, Sarah and her friend. Those men, they treat omegas like dolls they can play with. Even though there are omegas who did not get hurt or forced to stay at this place, we can’t let the others, like Sarah, suffer.” Nodding Steve brings you in his arms to carry you toward his bed.

“The others work on a plan; I will let you know when we are ready to strike. Sarah can stay at Natasha’s place for the time being. Tony said we will come up with a plan for the omegas after we freed them,” whilst you let Steve place you onto his bed you feel the pull getting stronger.

“Steve,” you whine, looking up at the tall alpha with glowing eyes, “I’m sorry but, I think my heat will break any minute,” you grasp for Steve, purring low in your throat. “I need you…”

In his continuing quest to remain president despite having lost this month’s election, President Donald Trump has been trying to wrest electoral votes away from Joe Biden in states that Biden won. Among the most aggressive tactics that the President might use is a direct appeal to the Republican-controlled legislatures of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania to hand him those state’s electoral votes.

On Thursday, the post-election narrative seemed to edge further down that path, as the Republican leaders of Michigan’s two legislative chambers—Senator Mike Shirkey and Representative Lee Chatfield—agreed to take a meeting with the President in Washington tomorrow. Until that point Shirkey and Chatfield were signaling that they didn’t intend to second-guess Michigan’s voters, who chose Biden by more than 150,000 votes. But by taking the White House meeting, they indicated their possible openness to changing their minds.

Politically, it’s possible that they see taking the meeting as a smart move, showing unhappy Michigan Republicans that they’re on the president’s side.

But as a matter of statesmanship—and, legally, for their own sakes—they’d be smarter to cancel it.

The scheduled meeting threatens two kinds of danger. At the largest level, it threatens the system of democratic presidential elections: If state officials start claiming the right to overturn elections because of vague claims about “fraud,” our democratic system will be unworkable. But in a more specific and immediate way, it threatens the two Michigan legislators, personally, with the risk of criminal investigation.

The danger to democratic elections is well-understood. The Constitution authorizes state legislatures to decide how states choose presidential electors. For more than a century, every state legislature has chosen to do it by popular election. According to one school of thought, though, a state legislature could choose to set aside a popular vote if it doesn’t like the result and choose different electors instead. This is a pretty undemocratic idea, as well as one that misreads the history of election law: the National Review recently described it as “completely insane.” (State legislatures have the power to change the system for choosing electors in future elections, but not to reject an already-conducted election just because they don’t like the result.) Nonetheless, the President is pushing for it. By so far refusing to go along with Trump, Republican state legislators have been standing up for the idea that fair, democratic elections are more important than any individual president. If Shirkey and Chatfield are reconsidering that view, they are playing with the possibility of throwing out the results of a free and fair election. That’s not something that the system comes back from easily.

The scheduled White House meeting also poses another kind of danger—one hanging specifically over the two Michiganders whose minds Trump seeks to change. Consider: Why, exactly, does President Trump want to see these two men in person, in his office? It isn’t to offer evidence that Michigan’s election was tainted and should therefore be nullified. If he had any such evidence, his lawyers would have presented it in court, rather than abandoning their Michigan lawsuitas they did today. It’s also unlikely that Trump is planning to persuade the Michiganders through subtle legal arguments about their constitutional role. Subtle argument isn’t really Trump’s way of doing things.

The president is a dealmaker, and it’s far more likely that his agenda is transactional. When considering a course of action, he doesn’t think about principles; he thinks about what’s in it for whom. So it makes sense to think that he is inviting Shirkey and Chatfield for a private meeting to offer them something. If they help throw the election to him, he can offer a lot. Give me Michigan’s electoral votes, he might say, and I’ll give you a cabinet post or make you Ambassador to Spain. President Trump is also not above offering cash: Give me the votes, and I’ll see to it that lots of money flows to places where you want it—to your state, or to you personally. (That would be an outrageous allegation to have made about Barack Obama or George W. Bush. But the president who paid illicit cash to Stormy Daniels to protect his first presidential run shouldn’t be presumed to scruple at paying more illicit cash to protect his second one.)

The danger for Shirkey and Chatfield, then, is that they are being visibly invited to a meeting where the likely agenda involves the felony of attempting to bribe a public official.

Under Michigan law, any member of the legislature who “corruptly” accepts a promise of some beneficial act in return for exercising his authority in a certain way is “forever disqualified to hold any public office” and “shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not more than 10 years[.]”

To be sure, there’s lots of horse-trading in politics that doesn’t amount to bribery. There’s nothing legally wrong with “You vote for my turnpike project, and I’ll vote for your dam.” But the prospect before Shirkey and Chatfield isn’t legislative logrolling, with representatives negotiating policy or even pork-barrel spending. It’s the prospect of a promise to deliver something of value to the officeholder personally. In other words, we aren’t talking about Trump’s saying “Here’s what’s in it for your constituents.” The prospect, in a one-on-one meeting with this president, is Trump’s saying “Here’s what’s in it for you.”

Shirkey and Chatfield are already on record—admirably—as being against a legislative intervention to ignore the popular vote and reallocate Michigan’s electors. If they take a meeting with a man who desperately wants them to change their minds, and who has no scruples about what kind of leverage he might use to get it, and then they do change their minds and try to send Michigan’s electors to Trump, the possibility that they were bribed will be screamingly obvious.

To be sure, it might not be true: Maybe Shirkey and Chatfield fear Trump’s supporters in the next election so much that they’d change their minds without a direct bribe on the table. But the bribery possibility is strong enough that a responsible prosecutor might feel compelled to pursue it. And the relevant prosecutor—Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel—is a straight-shooting Democrat who does not pal around with Shirkey and Chatfield. If she thought the facts justified an investigation, Shirkey and Chatfield would be investigated.

If the risk of prosecution were federal, the two men might figure they had little to worry about: President Trump, in his second term, would tell the Justice Department to lay off. But the president can’t stop a state prosecution, and he can’t pardon a state crime. Nor would the president’s conversations with Shirkey and Chatfield be shielded from investigation by any sort of executive privilege: Shirkey and Chatfield are not members of the president’s federal policymaking team. So if the Michigan attorney general decided to proceed, Shirkey and Chatfield would be looking—in the best-case scenario—at the pain and disrepute of subpoenas and a criminal investigation. In a less-good-case scenario for them, they’d be looking at the loss of their office and their liberty.

The point here is not that Shirkey and Chatfield are shady characters who might be involved in bribery. Let’s assume that they are honorable and upstanding public servants. But one thing that people who try to stay clean know is that it’s unwise to put yourself in a situation where it will look like you’ve broken the law—or, worse yet, where you might be induced to do so. “Lead us not into temptation” is well known as a religious precept: it’s also excellent legal advice.

The Trump Administration is nearing its end. Any other president who got these results on Election Day would have conceded gracefully and now be cooperating in a peaceful transfer of power—giving his successor’s team the information it needed so that from the stroke of noon on January 20, it could begin protecting American national security, fighting the Covid pandemic, and so forth. President Trump is choosing to block all of that constructive work so that he can avoid admitting that the other guy won. He is doing a fair amount of damage on his way out. That damage is hurting the country in general, and it will also hurt specific people.

A drowning man grabs at anything, and a strong drowning man brings other people down with him. To this point, Republican legislators in Michigan—and in other states where Trump might try to tip the scales, like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania—have wisely kept their distance. That’s good for them, personally, and it’s also good for democracy. If they’re smart, and the country is lucky, that’s how things will stay.

Big Hero 6/OUAT AU

Okay guys--so I worked this whole big AU up in my head while I was at work today, inspired by @honeyxmonkey ‘s Tangled the series OUAT AU and @greensword101 ‘s accompanying ask to me about Fred finding Hiro and giving him a hug once the curse was broken! Now, sadly I think I accidentally left my page of notes at work, or else they’re just lost somewhere in my bag, but I’m going to type of everything that I remember and hope for the best--here we go!

Backstory of how everyone got dragged into the curse: So I’m not even going to try to go into weird multi-versey type shit and try to be detailed with this but what you need to know is that Fred/Tadashi and Honey Lemon/Gogo are the main ships here, and Fred’s mom/Gogo’s parents are not happy about this, like at all. I have this headcanon that Gogo’s parents, while not as wealthy as Fred’s parents, are pretty well off (business owners? doctors? I’ll leave it up to your imagination) and are not at all happy with Gogo’s lifestyle choices/were probably emotionally and psychologically if not physically abusive to her, which is why as soon as she could she ran away to live with Honey Lemon’s family, and she and Honey Lemon eventually got together. Definitely not the match her parents wanted for her and they’re still mad that she wasn’t this perfect feminine daughter that they wanted. Fred’s mom is kind of the same way but mostly she’s just homophobic as shit and also wanted to marry Fred off to some rich girl like her and Fred’s dad’s parents did to the two of them. When it came down to choosing, Fred’s dad chose his son over her and divorced her, so she’s pissed because of that.

Moving forward before this gets too long: Long story short, Gogo’s parents and Fred’s mom kind of knew each other from moving in the same social circles and when they somehow find out about the curse (which wasn’t going to hit most of San Fransokyo, if at all) they either go to Regina or (more likely) Rumpelstiltskin and make a deal so that they can get not only themselves and their families pulled into this other world where they can have the lives that they wanted, but also pull in the friends and other people who encouraged Gogo and Fred to be themselves and “punish” them for what they did.

Characters Involved and Their Lives After the Curse:

Fred (new name: George): Engaged to Gogo (a match set up by his mom and Gogo’s parents), his dad in the cursed world doesn’t even fight his mom on things so he had no one to teach him to fight for himself and so he’s just sort of letting life get away from him and hiding in his fantasy stories and comics to escape reality.

Gogo (Edith): Engaged to Fred, never actually rebelled and never ran away from home so while she’s still got her fighting spirit on the inside it’s mostly been stamped out and she spends her days going to social events she hates and acting like she’s the perfect daughter she isn’t.

Honey Lemon (Heather): Works in an overly busy dress shop trying to earn money for college but is so underpaid she barely makes rent, let alone being able to save anything. She does all the tailoring on Gogo’s dresses and other clothes, including working on the wedding dress (which Gogo’s mom is never happy with, she’s probably made fifty dresses by now.) She and Gogo are secretly having a bit of a relationship (fitting rooms = closed doors and privacy with limited clothes for at least a short period of time) but no one can know. (More on the relationship below.)

Wasabi (Darnell): Honey Lemon’s roommate. Also trying to earn money for college (also failing at it), he works cleaning Fred’s family’s house--he’s great at the job because he’s so detail and cleanliness oriented, but he hates being around any germs, and the biggest part of the curse for him is having to clean Fred’s room.

Hiro (Nico): Hiro is a foster kid being “raised” by a horrible man named Montel (a.k.a. Yama) who forces Hiro into stealing things for him to “pay his keep” (and Hiro has the scars to show what happens if he disappoints him.)

Aunt Cass (Rachel): Works as the cook of Fred’s family, Fred’s mother delights in ordering her to make ridiculously elaborate and detailed meals, whether they have company or not, and then criticizing every part of them. Rachel would probably leave except she has a young son, Max, to look after and she can’t afford losing a job and having him taken away from her. (Red herring name alert: Max is actually a human version of Mochi, but if I ever turn this into an actual story it will be fun to throw people a bit off the trail! Also the reason Fred’s mom pulled Aunt Cass into this is because she felt Aunt Cass encouraged Tadashi and Fred to get together, being bi herself, and so she has an especial and very misplaced hatred for her.)

Tadashi (Shiro): Tadashi was found on the outskirts of town unconscious and covered in horrific burn scars. No one new his name except a few letters on a very decayed medical alert bracelet that looked a bit like Shiro (Tadashi Hamada--the “H” and “a” were pretty smeared kind of looked like “r” and “o”, the rest were completely illegible, so they guessed a bit on his name.) He was put in the hospital and put into a medically induced coma while he continued healing. When Emma came to town and time started moving again, Tadashi recovered enough for them to wake him up, but he has no memory of who he was or who his family was, and as his burns were still very severe and had gotten infected he’s still in the hospital for a very long time. (Explanation for Tadashi being alive: back in BH 6 world Fred’s dad, being a superhero, rescued Tadashi but since Tadashi was in such bad condition was still trying to get him back to being stable before letting anyone know that he was alive in case he didn’t make it. Fred’s mom did not count on this being a factor when she made the deal!)

Baymax (Mike): Baymax is a nurse in the hospital where Tadashi is being kept--in Once Upon a Time fashion, he did become human once in our world (I imagine his appearance being a lot like Aziraphale’s, only his irises are dark brown/almost black.) Another glitch in the curse (this time a literal one): even though Baymax’s memories were changed/rewritten for the curse, as a robot his system had backup storage for his memories. Robot brain being combined with a human brain was not quite compatible, so Baymax still talks/moves a bit like a robot which means a lot of people make fun of him for that, but more importantly, while he doesn’t remember everything, Baymax does have flashes of memories from the other world, and somewhat remembers being a robot. Of course anyone he tries to explain this to acts like he’s crazy so he’s learned to keep it to himself, but needless to say he feels a very strong connection to his patient, Shiro (who he at least on some level realizes is probably Tadashi), and is very, very protective of him.

(This started getting long so actual story development below the cut!)

Story Ideas:

-Fred and Gogo, while resigned to their eventual marriage,are still both incredibly gay in spite of being forced into the closet, so their general secret arrangement is that they’ll be married for their parents’ sake but both are free to privately have lovers or partners (as long as their parents don’t find out about it.) Gogo’s first choice, of course, is Honey Lemon. Honey Lemon is totally in love with Gogo, but she’s torn as to whether she’d truly be happy spending her life as someone’s mistress and not truly married to someone she loves.

-Fred and Hiro meet for the first time when Fred catches Hiro breaking into his room, having been sent by Yama to loot the house. Fred almost calls security, but he sees how skinny Hiro is and how beat up he is and takes pity on him. He wants to call CPS but Hiro begs him not to, afraid of being sent to an even worse home (he has curse memories of being in even worse homes to keep him from ever leaving Yama.) Fred would gladly try to take Hiro in himself but he’s too afraid of what his mother would say. So instead he and Hiro make a deal--any time that Hiro wants to, he can come by the house, and Fred will provide him with money or whatever else he needs to take back to Yama to avoid getting in trouble, and then Hiro gets to secretly spend a few hours with Fred, playing video games, reading comics, doing all the fun kid stuff he never gets to do at home--and of course Aunt Cass makes it her mission to make sure that Hiro always gets at least one good meal while he’s there, even though she doesn’t understand why it hurts so much to see this teenager she doesn’t even know leave to go back to his foster home.

-Hiro and Baymax meet when Hiro’s class goes to the hospital to help decorate it for the patients (remember when Henry went and met “John Doe”? Same visit, even though Hiro is of course in a different, older class and also probably in a different wing of the hospital.) Baymax sees Hiro and, with his glitchy memories of the other world, remembers Hiro, but unfortunately Hiro is only freaked out by this stranger calling him Hiro (”My name is Niko!”) and acting like he knows him. Finally Baymax has to give up on that. Still, he “conveniently” sends Hiro to decorate the room of a sleeping patient in the burn unit. Hiro is grumbling about how stupid all of this is, how decorating a room won’t really help anyone, when he hears a voice saying, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is a waste.” He turns around to realize that the sleeping patient has woken up.

The patient introduces himself as Shiro, and even though Hiro feels weird talking to this guy who’s mostly covered in bandages, somehow they end up talking all the same, and Hiro finds himself spilling his whole life story to Shiro, who turns out to be a great listener. When Hiro’s teacher tells him it’s time to leave, Hiro finds he actually doesn’t want to go! But Tadashi asks him to wait for a moment, and then pulls a small bag of gummy bears out from a bag by his bed, saying, “Here. My nurse brought these for me and I was saving them for later, but I think you need them more than me.” Which almost makes Hiro cry because he loves gummy bears but he can’t even remember the last time that he had them. (A.K.A. Hasn’t had them since being sent here by the curse.) He promises to come back to visit Tadashi as soon as he can, and he makes good on that promise. He and Tadashi can’t do a lot for each other, but they always find ways to do small things, like how Tadashi will always save the desserts from his meals to share with (or more often give to) Hiro, and Hiro will check out books from the library that he thinks Tadashi would like and reads to him. “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is a waste” becomes their motto.

-Hiro, spending time with both Fred and Tadashi, and having started seeing both of them as older brother/almost dad figures, plus eventually finding out that they’re both gay, starts dreaming of a life where Tadashi heals enough to leave the hospital, then meets and gets together with Fred, and the two of them adopt Hiro and they all live their happily ever after together. Hiro never manages to get Fred to physically come to the hospital with him, but somehow convinces him to become pen pals with a “lonely guy with no family or loved ones to look after him (he totally pulls out the puppy dog eyes guilt trip) and somehow despite anyone’s best efforts to keep it from happening, Tadashi and Fred start to fall in love all over again :)

The Curse Breaks (a,k.a. the one part of the story I actually wrote):

Hiro races towards the center of town, running as fast as he possibly could. He’d through that Montel was evil--he’d never imagined that things could possibly get worse, but when Yama’s memories had returned Hiro was pretty sure it was only the delayed shock of getting all his memories back at once that had let Hiro get away with little more than a bloody nose (and his life.) Hiro had no idea what the hell was happening--how he was here, in some town called Storybrooke and not in San Fransokyo, and how he had these two completely different lives and memories living in his head and currently at war with each other--but all he really knew is that he needed to get somewhere safe. Somewhere that Yama couldn’t find him and hurt him.

“Hiro!” Hiro almost kept running when he heard someone shouting his name, too terrified of Yama catching up with him if he stopped, but then he suddenly felt arms wrapping around him and, after a moment of struggling, he realizes that he knew the person holding him.

“F-Fred?” Hiro gasps, looking up at the older man.

“Yeah, Hiro--it’s me,” Fred answers, a look of relief in his eyes as he smiles down at Hiro.

“Y-You remember?” Hiro cries, glad that this was at least some sort of proof that he hadn’t gone completely crazy.

“Of course I do.” Fred hugs him tighter. “I-I’m so glad that you remember too, I was afraid that you might not--”

“No, I remember.” Hiro shakes his head before adding with a shiver, “A-And Yama does too...”

“Yama?” Fred repeats only to gasp after a moment. “Holy shit! I-Is that who you’ve been living with this whole time?”

“I think the answer is obvious,” Hiro answers, pulling away and gesturing to his bloody nose.

“Oh my God.... Oh my God, Hiro I am so, so sorry,” Fred whispers, his voice full of horror. “I can’t believe-- I-I should have gotten you out of there a long, long time ago, but the curse...”

“Curse?” Hiro repeats in confusion. “What curse?”

“Apparently that’s what’s gotten us all here--a curse that took us from home and put us here, and gave us fake memories and made sure that we’d all be as miserable as possible. And it’s not just people from San Fransokyo, you won’t even believe who some of the people living in this town really are...” Fred answers before adding quickly, “But I can explain more on the way--all of our family and friends are back at my house, apparently my mom and Gogo’s parents have something to do with all of us getting wrapped up in this.”

“So everyone’s there?” Hiro asks hopefully. “Aunt Cass, Wasabi, Honey Lemon?” He’d have asked about Gogo too but Fred had already mentioned her so he could only assume that she was.

“Yes, everyone--even Mochi, can you believe that he’s actually Max?” Fred laughs.

“Whoa... That is pretty crazy,” Hiro says, shaking his head, trying to wrap his head around the idea that Aunt Cass’ cat had somehow become a human child.

It was as he was thinking this over that another thought occurred to him.

“Wait, Max...” he says slowly, and then gasps as the realization fully hits him. “Holy fuck, Baymax!”

“Hiro, I-I’m sorry, I don’t know where Baymax is yet, everyone coming out of the curse has everyone pretty scrambled up...” Fred starts to say apologetically, but Hiro cuts him off.

“No! I mean, I think I know where Baymax is!” Hiro cries, tugging on Fred’s hand. “C’mon, we have to go get him!”

“...The others can wait,” Fred after agrees after only a moment’s hesitation. “Let’s go get Baymax!”

A few minutes later, both of them rush into the hospital--things were in such a disarray that they didn’t even bother to stop at the nurse’s desk, Hiro leading the way up the stairs to the burn unit where he hoped that he’d find...

“Baymax!” Hiro lets out a huge sigh of relief when he sees the man in his standard white scrubs--it was still incredibly weird to think of the marshmallow-esque robot that Tadashi had made was somehow human, but all that really mattered that he was here and that he was safe.

“Hiro!” The man turns to Hiro, a bright smile on his face, quickly putting to rest any fears that Hiro might have had that this wasn’t actually Baymax.

“Wait, that’s Baymax?” Fred cries in surprise.

“Fred, hello!” Baymax answers cheerfully, waving to him.

“I... Uh... Hi?” Fred waves a bit awkwardly.

“I’m so glad that you’re okay,” Hiro says gratefully, hurrying into Baymax’s open arms and giving him a tight hug.

“I am very well, thank you,” Baymax answers, hugging him back, before letting him go and continuing, “There is someone else here who would like to see you!”

“Someone else?” Hiro repeats in confusion. Who else could be here that he knew?

“Hiro!”

That’s when Hiro hears a voice--a voice that, even before the curse, he’d given up on ever hearing again. No. No, it couldn’t possibly be--!

That’s when he sees Shiro, sitting in a wheelchair next to his hospital bed--the burn scars had greatly changed his appearance, it was true, and his hair was a bit longer than it had been before. But there was no mistaking those eyes, or that smile.

“T-Tadashi?” Hiro whispers, tears welling up in his eyes before he could even fully process what was happening. “I-Is it really you?”

“It’s me,” Tadashi answers, looking a bit teary eyed himself, and, without even thinking about the consequences, Hiro launches himself at Tadashi, landing in his lap and wrapping his arms tightly around him, never wanting to let him go, only to find his hands wandering over Tadashi’s features--his arms, his hands, his face--trying to prove to himself that this was real, that Tadashi was really here with him. Tadashi was doing much the same, half laughing, half crying, stroking Hiro’s hair and kissing away the tears as they fell down his cheeks.

“H-How?” Hiro whispers. “How are you here? “

“I don’t know,” Tadashi admits, shaking his head.”I-I don’t remember anything that happened to me after the fire... But I’m here, and I’m with you, and that’s all that matters.”

Hiro decides that questions can wait for later--all that mattered was that he had Tadashi back.

“D-Dashi?”

Hiro suddenly remembers that he wasn’t the only one here who had a very good reason to be glad that Tadashi was alive.

“Fred?” Tadashi cries, looking up at Fred with what could only be described as joy in his eyes, and Hiro wisely chooses to move out of the way just in time to avoid being caught in the middle as Fred pulls Tadashi into a deep, passionate kiss. Maybe back in San Fransokyo his old self would have found this gross or made a joke out of it. But not anymore. This was something he’d been trying to get to happen for months, and it felt like his dream was finally coming true. Shiro and George--no, Fred and Tadashi!--were finally a couple, and maybe with this stupid curse gone, they could get married and adopt him so he could finally be away from Yama!

But wait. No, that wasn’t right! Hiro shakes his head. That was Niko’s dream, when he was stuck here, not Hiro’s dream! Hiro never would have dreamed of his older brother and his brother’s best friend getting married and adopting him! ...Would he have? More to the point, though: if a curse had somehow sent them here (and he couldn’t think of a more logical explanation at the moment), and it had indeed been broken--shouldn’t they be back in San Fransokyo? Shouldn’t they have gone back home?

Hiro feels a cold shiver pass through him. What exactly was going on here? And who would have the answers?

“I have heard that there is a relief center being set up for those who are trying to find loved ones or who have questions about the curse,” Baymax pipes up, in the uncanny way that he had of almost reading Hiro’s thoughts.

“Well, that sounds exactly like that place we should go,” Tadashi says, turning towards them, with Fred’s hand firmly wrapped around his own.

“It does--maybe then we can bring some more information back to the others,” Fred agrees.

“Dashi, is it okay for you to leave the hospital, though?” Hiro asks a bit worriedly--he knew that Tadashi had been recovering, but he hadn’t left the hospital since being here!

“I can come with to monitor his condition,” Baymax offers.

“That would be great, thank you, Baymax.” Tadashi grins up at the other man.

“You are welcome!” Baymax replies, looking pleased to be of assistance.

“Well... If Baymax is coming with us, then I guess it should be okay,” Hiro finally relents.

“So, are we ready to go?” Tadashi asks, looking first to Fred and then to Hiro.

“Yeah,” Hiro agrees, taking Tadashi’s free hand as Fred continues to hold the other and Baymax begins pushing the chair forward. “I think we are.”

As long as he had his family and friends by his side, he was ready for whatever the future had in store for them.

((Random future story bit: The group running into Yama and Baymax giving him a good punch in the nose since Tadashi can’t stand to do it himself. “I no longer have programming, so I am no longer prevented from injuring a human being :)” (Protective Baymax is SCARY AF and also totally awesome!)))

Okay, so a vast majority of ya'll wanted a story that started out lighthearted but had an underlying plot that revealed itself slowly throughout the story. SO, based on that, I paced and basically ranted to myself until I finally got a very, very rough first draft of a possible outline/setting thing for the Demon GF story. Originally I was gonna ask for a select few folks to take a looksie but, I don't think there's any huge spoilers here since it's only the first draft. So I'd love for ya'll to take a looksie and give me your opinion on it, perhaps some suggestions too!

Rough Setting:

-Otherworld and Mortal World exist in parallel; originally were connected and allowed crossing between realms. Demons, Angels, and Mortals coexisted peacefully. -Small handful of Seraph and Devils (I'm thinking only 2: 1 Seraph, 1 Devil) wanted control over both realms so, with the help of some humans who wanted power of their own, they form a scheme to kill or seal away other Seraph and Devils who aren't in their group to prevent opposition -Main demon character (she's a Devil) is too strong to be outright killed so she's sealed away -Mortal realm and Otherworld realm blocked off from one another: demons and angels can no longer enter the Mortal world by whim and vice versa with mortals. Summoning and contracts become the only way common demons and angels are able to visit the mortal realm, which results in it becoming a central part of their culture. Additional benefit that the masses are now fighting amongst themselves over who has access to contracts instead of focusing on who broke the natural system in the first place (whom are now in power) -Fast forward to present time: main human character summons main demon. Could be a mere coincidence she manages to summon this demon in particular: perhaps the way she designed the summoning circle or the chant to summon the demon. -The direct summon paired with its age weakens the seal enough to be broken, and the demoness is free. Girl invites her to stay, and it's her sincerity that causes the demoness to agree. -Demoness being freed from her seal causes the unexpected effect of opening a small rift in the "wall" between Mortal realm and Otherworld realm: results in common angels and demons slowly trickling out in order to escape and seek refuge from their realm's oppression. -Snowballs into the "higher ups" of the otherworld taking notice and investigating the rift: leads to the discovery of the demoness being freed. Her freedom + the rift allowing passage = direct opposition to everything they built up ------------------------- Additional ideas to rough setting: -Demoness knows she was sealed away but doesn't know why or by who simply because she didn't see them: her sealing could have been a successful ambush -Contracts and summons were something of a casual sort of thing between mortals and Otherworlders before the barrier between the realms came to be. So when the barrier was erected and contact was cut off, Contracts and summoning became something of great importance and value to the common Otherworlder as their only means of escaping the Otherworld. -Contracts are monitered by the "Higher Ups" of the Otherworld now: when a contract between demon/angel and mortal is struck, it is monitored until the termination of the contract or until it's broken. Demons and Angels who break their contracts can be punished by imprisonment or worse, an incentive not to break it. However, the incentive to break it at all is the demon or angel being granted their freedom: one on the run and in hiding, but a chance at life they can't experience in the Otherworld in its current state. These refugees are hunted by associates of the "Higher Ups" in the Overworld, but also by humans who have ties to this power regime as well. -A mortal who breaks a contract, their punishment is regulated to specific authority figures in the Mortal world: mortals who are in on the power regime between the "Higher Ups" of the Otherworld. People who grants a demon or angel their freedom by inviting them to stay in the mortal world is hunted down by both due to being a "threat" to the system. -This world's religions could be exploited for this power regime's gain?? -The city the human girl lives in has a somewhat denser population of demons and angels because it's seen as a secret safe haven for them. Demons and angels are commonly in disguise as humans or strike frivolous contracts as alibis to stay. Could explain why the people here aren't super shocked to see a demon walking around ------------------ ENDING IDEA: -Demoness is seen as too much a threat to the power system and deemed necessary to dispose of. Main headers of this power setup come to confront her as well as clear the town as an extra measure, so the demon rises to protect the place she's come to call home. Results in a battle between the antagonists and the Demoness (perhaps similar to a kaiju battle?), a battle she initially struggles with but ultimately wins (maybe with the help of someone originally from the antagonist's side choosing to stand against them OR the local demons and angels standing up to fight with her). More than half the city is destroyed in result to the battle and the regime still stands, but its main heading figures are gone and would allow a chance at returning to the peaceful rule it once was. Epilogue and resulting epsiodes/chapters after this could be about rebuilding, more slice-of-life stuff without the underlying threat always hanging overhead, and mini-adventures with and into the Otherworld.

Hide and Saiko: The Terrorists Who Don’t Do Anything

I’ve been suspecting it for a long time, but after this chapter it’s become quite clear.

Both characters are observant of the environment around them, and driven by simple and pure emotions of love. I don’t want to understate how genuine these emotions of love are.

It’s love in both cases, that is their greatest strength and their greatest weakness.

I know I occasionally float a “Hide might be an ultimate antagonist theory” as a thought exercise but my interpretation of Hide has always been the most boring Hide theory of all, that he really is just somebody who wants to look out for Kaneki no matter what, and his strongest abilities are being a slightly clever and observant kid.

That’s exactly it though, in the realization of Hide as somebody whose in it for Kaneki, not only does the good nature of his character shine, but also his several limitations. This discussion is not to degrade Hide, or Saiko, but rather to render both of them as characters whereas before this point they’ve just kind of floated around in the narrative.

A character needs to have a flaw, in order to have conflict, and then an arc. For all of those people who want to focus on the positives of Hide that’s fine, but his role in the story will always come from his negatives. As if there’s no conflict, there is no story. So for the people who want to see Hide as important, ironically, he has to be flawed in order to be important in the story.

I think it’s important also that Hide hangs around characters like Amon, Akira, Marude, characters who otherwise are told to the audience they have importance but have yet to be punished narratively for showing a clear flaw and therefore end up doing little to nothing for arcs at a time. It’s my opinion that this arc is there time to shine finally as characters, and therefore be punished as characters.

The question is then, after spending all this time writing a huge disclaimer about it what exactly do I believe Hide’s flaw to be and how does this connect to Saiko?

“Do I need another reason? He he.”

That is exactly it though, how far exactly has Hide gone for Kaneki? He loves him, so he’s willing to face down Kaneki as a giant red monster in order to try to save him and pry him out of it, yet apparently that love wasn’t strong enough for Hide to do something so simple as tell Kaneki he was alive.

What Hide says much earlier, is pretty illustrative of his role in things so far.

All Hide has done so far is watch, which is to say he’s acted entirely passively. Even if his intentions were good and wholesome which once again, I believe they are, ultimately his actions amount to nothing. Hide says the reason he went to the Auction was to watch for an opportunity to save Kaneki.

Hide hears at the auction, the sounds of Kaneki being tortured but ultimately does nothing. Other than make a small move in the hopes that somebody else will do something.

Which is where we get the parallel to Saiko, Saiko also hears the sounds of Kaneki screaming from torture over the loudspeakers.

Ultimately though, Saiko does nothing. She hesitates terrified to face Seidou, and yet we see in the same situation that despite the danger from both the CCG and the other members of Aogiri it’s Hinami who moves.

Hinami who remember had the least to gain in this situation. Who was protecting something that did not even remember her anymore as her brother, unlike Saiko who wanted Sasaki to come home safe to her, and Hide who wanted to save Kaneki in this situation.

Utlimately what moves Saiko is not Sasaki’s own pain, but rather the fact that he might leave her. That she might lose her space of refuge in him.

So despite Hide having good enough reasons not to move, the fact that the Washuu were hunting him for one, or that he wasn’t powerful enough to face Seidou on his own it ultimately doesn’t really excuse his inactivity, because we see somebody who did take that risk, and for that fact got punished over and over again for Sasaki’s sake out of pure love for him. Hinami sat in prison for six months because of this selfless decision of hers. Neglected to the point of near insanity and despair.

Yet ultimately, Hinami is able to do something that Hide and Saiko are incapable of. Confronting Kaneki, which is what happens when he finally comes to see her again.

Which is thematically ultimately what Hide needs to do, not to save Kaneki but rather to confront Kaneki about himself. While Hide’s inactivity did play a role in it, taking the blame for it all and saying that he needed to save Kaneki or make better use of himself is also flipping the exact opposite direction, and not really looking at the situation at face value.

Hide and Saiko are ultimately characters with good intentions, but their huge fear of confrontation is ultimately what leads them to reinforcing the status quo rather than challenging it.

Hide pretty clearly says the reason why he didn’t want to move was because the Washuu were after him, but Hide also never really took any steps himself against the Washuu, and always relied on other people to move on in his stead. In fact, Hide actually moved against the one person who did a really good job of getting rid of all the Washuu. For the sake of the restoration of the CCG, the thing that every other terrorist group in the manga has been against.

Which is why it strikes me so odd that Hide and Saiko get referred to as terrorists, because both characters (Hide at least did live on his own for awhile and hide from the law), don’t actually want to break apart the systems that ideally are the one thing terrorists are for.

I mean, Saiko didn’t even show up for the supposed “rebellion” against the CCG that she inspired. She literally slept through it, even though she was the one who was so concerned for Yoriko’s sake she left it entirely up to Urie.

Hide also this arc, showed up not to help Goat fight against the 24th ward raid, but rather to help out Urie, who is somebody he didn’t even know even though he claims his real goal is to be doing all of this out of love for Kaneki. So, Amon and Akira as well, claim that they can be finally motivated to move out of love for Kaneki.

Yet we see scenes in the past where they could have stayed around and helped him, but rather left for their own purposes. So, what exactly is so different now?

Narratively it’s because their back is against the wall, and that is the main flaw. They don’t act, they react. They act with no agency for themselves and therefore only take direct action when someone else acts upon them.

If somebody punches you in the face, and you punch them back you aren’t the one who started the situation. It’s not a unique character action on your part, most people would react violently if somebody else walked up to them and punched them in the face.

Therefore there is a clear difference between acting with agency as a character, and simply reacting. Hide and Saiko, and by extension, Akira, Amon and Marude react to this whole situation. They act like they can save Kaneki now, but have little to no self awareness for how they let it get that bad in the first place. It reminds me of “Saved from the Web”.

Saiko temporarily saves Urie, but she doesn’t do anything at all to address the behavior that caused Urie to end up like this in the first place. The next significant arc, we see that Saiko is back to pushing Urie to handle everything on his own because she doesn’t come with him to rebel against Furuta, and we see that’s also the exact same lesson Urie has internalized upon himself.

Ironically it’s why the chapter is called “Saved from the Web” but we see at the ending, despite Saiko’s actions the web is very much still there.

So we see again in this arc, characters like Saiko and Hide who still care very deeply for Kaneki but ended up doing effectively nothing to save him from Dragon.

In comparison to Hinami, who was once again able to step up and act at great personal risk and detriment to herself.

She’s the one who ends up totally broken at the end of this arc, while Hide and Saiko are still looking up to things as if there is still hope.

If you take the remake chapter as canon though, it’s also implied that Hide’s fear of confrontation has been a thing with Kaneki since the beginning. The implication is pretty clear here, that he simply watched and let Kaneki go on the date with Rize despite knowing how dangerous it was, because he was afraid of the confrontation otherwise.

So we ultimately have the flaw in their love. Saiko and Hide can have all of the love in the world for Sasaki, but if they’re unwilling to confront him, and only want to love him from afar than their love will never reach him.

Both characters, who are strong, clever, and observant in their own right, but instead choose to be passive and take orders, or operate almost entirely through others.

Which means also their own individual characters have not done much, or had much time to shine. If Saiko and Hide want to be able to act on their love though, to save Sasaki and Kaneki, then they have to actually be able to do that. To move on their own volition and not just when things are forcing their backs against a wall to move, and also to actually be able to confront Kaneki, not just face him with 100% accepting love.

As ultimately, the person they are trying to save Kaneki from now is not V, the Washuu, or even the CCG, but rather his own self.

Yet I wonder if the characters present around them even have the visual clarity necessary to see that. After all, both Akira and Amon are so persuaded by the thought of Kaneki’s love for Hide, and their own reasoning of wanting to save their friends and yet...

As we’re reminded in Title they’ve completely forgotten about Seidou Takizawa’s existence, their own friend in need of saving.

If Amon and Akira are the couple in coats in the above panel, (it matches the overcoats they’re wearing here) they’re shown distinctly walking away from both :Re and Seidou himself.

It’s important to remember that Amon’s already said this sort of thing before.

His entire purpose for those three years was to save Seidou and Kurona, yet when they both save him, Amon completely forgets about them and doesn’t even ask about them when he wakes up. Apparently he wasn’t that concerned for the people he spent three years searching for, once he saved them once.
