did anyone else grow up on these? my noni used to bring them to the pool for us to eat as a snack after and they were like crack for me and my sisters when we were small. i don't know what they put in them to make kids go nuts like that, but there was a time where i would have killed a man for one of the blueberry ones.

Day 340
Before my grandmother broke her hip resulting in her mental health spiraling over the course of several years, she used to live in a tiny apartment on her own. The building she lived in was unique, because it was full of retired Chinese folk like her. In fact, the building had a Mahjong room on the ground floor, which always rang with the sound of clicking plastic tiles.
Even back then, a trip to the city was always draining on me, or maybe it was because trips to the big city meant trips to the specialized children’s hospital that it was draining. Either way, I spent a lot of time alone with my grandmother while my parents went out to do grocery shopping.
Sounds weird, I know… but it was 30+ years ago and back then there weren’t as many Asian grocery stores where my family lived. Say what you want about foodie culture now, one of the boons is that it made Asian food (and by extension Asian ingredients) mainstream. It was a treat back then when my parents went shopping because mom would always buy me pocky or a baked good from a mom and pop Chinese bakery.
One of the few memories I have of my grandmother is that she would always have the Garden brand cream wafers in her kitchen. Back then, they were sold in these large square tins with air sealed tops that had to be popped open using a spoon. I liked doing that part as a kid, popping the lid open with a spoon. Grandma always had strawberry flavoured cream wafers, and to me they were the best.
I think about it sometimes, those little moments at her table popping open cookie tins to have a strawberry wafer. It’s probably why I still like that brand, even though these days there are better, stronger flavoured wafers out on the market. They no longer sell them in tins, probably for the extra cost, and probably in large part that there are more flavours than just vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. In more recent years the packets of wafers now come in smaller packets of four, it’s the same amount just divided up to prevent mindless snacking. They’re great, I can put them into my lunchbox if I want to take them to work.
I thought about my grandmother and those strawberry wafers today, after buying three different flavours of cream wafers and packing them nicely away into a box. No strawberry though funnily enough, I much prefer lemon as an adult.

I'm sitting on my bed eating celery sticks with peanut butter. it's been... a day. lots of uncomfortable things to think about in my house and my future. my siblings and i used to eat celery sticks and peanut butter as a snack when we were kiddos. my dad hates both of those ingredients so we'd joke that he'd never pinch our snacks that way.
over the summer me and my siblings went to the park in town and talked about some childhood TV shows, the turmoil we feel, our futures etc... my siblings were excited to go off to uni this fall, and that's where they are now. by all accounts they're having good adventures. i will hopefully move out by the end of another year at home. a chance to restart, it's scary, and it seems altogether too soon and not soon enough.
