Cao Ang has been my blorbo for a long time because he is a fascinating contradiction. he achieved nothing and did nothing of note, but seems to have left a significant impression on those around him. Cao Cao expresses regret for him on his deathbed. Cao Pi talks about how he should have been the rightful heir. Lady Ding was willing to disobey the most powerful man in the empire in order to get the smallest measure of justice for him. His death always struck me as, well, a feel-good narrative told by a guilty conscience. Cao Cao could have ordered any one of his bodyguards to give up his horse, but he didn't. It makes sense in the coldest, most logical way. Why lose an able-bodied fighter for a brat? You can always make more. I came up with a bunch of scenarios of what "really" happened, but in the end i realised it doesn't matter. Cao Cao still left his son to die. the horror comes from the ambiguity itself. I also wanted to explore how his actions would impact the remainder of his children. They realised overnight that they were all disposable and no one was safe. the real tragedy doesn't come from Cao Ang's death, but his father undoing all his hard work. Ang tried his best to give them love, curb their worst impulses, and foster good relationships between them, only for his father to stick them in the Sibling Royale. Climb to the top and uproot all your competition. ect. ect.

But I am an optimistic person and I believe true love can pierce the veil and save the day and all that. Cao Ang's ghost continues to haunt the narrative and in the end, he manages to effect his brothers in some way. Cao Pi comes to realise that, hey, this kinda sucks, actually. i think we're emotionally stunted and perpetuating the cycle of violence. maybe i don't have to trample all my brothers to preserve my own life. maybe i shouldn't become exactly like father. hmm much to think about. Cultural Context, for those interested:

funerary practices are not historical, but based on the modern shangdong ones i've experienced.

"putting your child in your mouth" is an expression of helpless tenderness. the full phrase is "i want to you hold in my hands, but i'm afraid of dropping you. i want to hold you in my mouth, but i'm afraid you will melt." i wanted to show this conflict within cao cao, the warlord vs the man. how his ambition corrupts him. ultimately, cao cao does not put his son in his mouth to protect him. he consumes him instead.

the opening scene is based on Cao Pi's poem "Traveling on the city wall." His poems are notable for being very emo, he talks about feeling isolated and unfulfilled despite having every worldly possession. I decided to connect it with Cao Zhi's (ahistorical) bean poem. the metaphor is less profound, but what can you do? he is the lesser poet after all ;))) .

This is entirely copied from my reblog of this post, but I just thought I'd put this in a post of my own for safekeeping on this hellsite or I'd literally never find the translation of Xingnv's Lament I did for this reblog ever again but. Anyway!

Whenever I think about the fact that like, people claim historical people grieved less about child and infant mortality I want to start biting because here's the translation of the Cao Zhi's poem on losing a daughter (yes the Cao Zhi of the infamous bean poem/Seven Step Quatrain fame) written sometime in the 200s AD: 行女哀辞

序：行女生于季秋，而终于首夏。三年之中，二子频丧。 伊上帝之降命，何修短之难哉；或华发以终年，或怀妊而逢灾。 感前哀之未阕，复新殃之重来！方朝华而晚敷，比晨露而先晞。 感逝者之不追，��忽忽而失度。天盖高而无阶，怀此恨其谁诉！

Xingnv's Lament

Preface: My youngest daughter, Xingnv, was born in late autumn and died in early summer of the following year. In just three years, two beloved daughters died one after another. The heavens grant precious life to people, yet why is the length of that life so hard to guess Some people are fortunate to live to old age, others die young in the womb I have yet to finish grieving for Jinhu*, yet I have to see Xingnv** buried in dust This poor child falls like the hibiscus, life drying like the morning dew I thought of that young life that could never return, and lose my normal composure Resenting that the heavens have no stairs for me to climb, to pour out the sorrows of my heart

*Jinhu is the first child that he mentioned

**Xingnv is the daughter he dedicated this poem to

Like! DESPITE what people will tell you people often grieved their children, yes, even daughters which, historical fiction SO often say that fathers hated having Girl Children or whatever. We only know Cao Jinhu and Cao Xingnv's names because their father wrote them down. And grieved their absence.

"Resenting that the heavens have no stairs for me to climb" is SO bleak and so utterly fucking devastating.

I'd say she'd be pretty well known, has a good amount of followers

She's not famous by any means, but there are a few teasing comments from her classmates and or friends. For example: "Oh my god, is that (insert her username)! Can I get an autograph???" Y'know, stuff like that

I'd say she's chronically online, constantly quoting the latest memes and is sort of up to the trends. Would do the typical dumb dares people have made up, but is always doing them on the brink of the trends end

I'd say her favorite app is... Tiktok? Yeah, looks like she'd be obsessed with that app

Knows more about the news and global warming and all of the stuff that the adults are supposed to hear and worry about. I'd feel like she'd have multiple weird facts pop up on her FYP and would either spill the horrors of her 'fun facts' to her mother, or would run to Lilith to tell her yet another fun fact she managed to find

And as for the Instagram bit, as previously stated, she'd have quite the amount of followers. I'd feel like she would post her 'epic stunts' that she did in the backyard, you could hear a faint voice of her mom yelling her full name before she cuts the video short. Also is the type of person to post horrendous memes on her page (I am guilty of that crime 😔)

She always leaves encouraging comments on her friends Instagram posts and stuff, I feel like I should put that in

As for her texting style, it's caos. No commas, no new rows, no punctuation, no nothing. Literally texts like this

hey lilly mom said we r gonna get mcdonlds be out of UR ruum in 5 mins

She knows grammar and has the ability to type correctly, she just doesn't feel like being grammatically correct when texting. It's your problem you can't read it 😒

Is actually pretty famous... Well, at least on her other profile

She's that 'aesthetic smart girl' you see on your page that never shows her face. Also does bomb powerpoint presentations and posts them on her account (ppl eat that stuff upppp)

Eda would be the only one to know about her secret account and she swears to keep her mouth shut. Although the secret account does slip out of Edas mind often, so Lilith doesn't have to worry all that much about the word spreading

But, on her main account which she shares with her friends... It's literally just her friends. Of course, you have her sister and people she hangs out with/is cool with, as well as her club members, but thats pretty much it

On her main, she mostly posts stuff about her school and her successes, such as the awards she gets in contests of the medals/trophies she recives

Again, Eda will the the one hyping her up in her comments, but she doesn't dare to hype her up on her secret account, as to not rish accidentally spilling the beans in the comments somehow

For her favorite app... I'd have to say: 'Instagram'. I would've said Pinterest but it doesn't quite sit right with me fully... Instagram feels like a better fit

Always scrolling through reels, but also opens Tiktok from time to time (specifically to search for the memes Eda is quoting so that she isn't as confused)

Texts normally, like how you'd see people text on the daily. But, if she's mad, I can also see her writing painfully grammatically correct sentences with words that everybody forgets the meaning of

Raine Whispers!

Raine would be avarege in the followers count. They wouldn't be all that famous, but they also wouldn't be completely invisible

Definitely is the type of person to have their account private for a few years before toughening up and macking their account public. That was oddly specific but we'll move on

They'd mostly post selfies with their friends, of course an occasional recording of their progress with their violin as well as some bard magic tricks (like that whistling in the cup)

Doesn't get that many comments on their posts, but when they do they make sure to either like it or fully reply

Isn't as chronically online as Eda but is up to date with the memes. Is always able to quote with or continue a quote Eda began. Trends always somehow end up on their for you page when they're scrolling on Tiktok

Favorite app? Oddly enough: 'Twitter' 'X'. Loves to read the drama people have, and when there is nothing to do they just scroll onto people's accounts

And for the texting style: the perfect middle. Just enough punctuation to make it make sense, but not too formal to make it look like a business e-mail

That episode of Ahsoka was my favorite so far. (I know there is only 3 eps out 😂)

I love the training sequences with Sabine, Huyang, and Ahsoka. It felt very samurai like and I loved it. It reminds me of Trials of the Darksaber so much.

My personal theory is Sabine won't ever be able to weild the Force (ie lifting things) but she can learn the Jedi ways. If she does actually weild the Force I would think it appear in relation to Ezra (like how Ezra force pushes Kallus away from Zeb).

You can tell Sabine is rusty in her fighting techniques on the ship which I appreciate. She's been on Lothal for years so she hasn't used that skill in a while. I also loved that we are seeing her and Ahsoka mend their relationship (I NEED THE BACKSTORY DAVE).

Huyang never change I love you. Sabine fixing the ship brought back so many Rebels memories.

PURRGIL. I love them so much 😭 Sabine was so surprised to see them but her flying thru them was *chef's kiss*. I imagine she has spent the last decade so mad at them for taking Ezra but now she os happy because that means they can possibly take her to him. She has hope ❤️

Love the beef between Shin and Morgan. Love the dynamic bw Shin and Marrok.

HERA SYNDULLA. Tear those senators to shreads girl. MEW did a fantastic job. The fact that she kept working to search for Ezra despite what the NR wanted 😭

JACEN SYNDULLA. I am in love with the adorable little green bean. Him and Chopper causing caos is perfection. 'Aunt Sabine' my heart 😭😭 'I want to be a Jedi' 😭😭😭 His shoulder pauldron that looks exactly like Kanan’s 😭😭😭 I hope we get more Jacen in future episodes. I want more Jacen and Chopper. I need Ezra to train him.

My only complaints: no Kanan mention when there were 2 perfect opportunities for it and I wish it was a longer episode.

Hi! I love your blog! <3 Do you have any headcannons about rivusa as parents? Especially Riven? Idk why I always picture Riven as a girl dad to a little mind fairy! I’d love to hear your thoughts! :)

first of all, thank you very much, love!!! second, OMG you just opened a dangerous door because if there’s one thing that i have is for sure rivusa headcanons about everything. so lets go, headcanons for rivusa as parents:

- in my headcanon neither of them believed they would be good parents, so at first neither musa or riven would want to have kids therefore would be super careful for it not happen

- but you know… accidents happen so their first pregnancy would definitely be unplanned. musa would find out first and freak the absolute out about it, first for not believing she would be a good mom and second for being scared to tell riven, thinking he would hate it

- she decides to tell him anyway after not more than a few hours because she couldn’t bare to think about it on her own. she waits for him to get home, tell while freaking out and embraces herself for the caos of emotions she would feel from him (cause even though she can control her powers now, she’d be too nervous to focus on doing it) but for her surprise she felt nothing but calm. for the first time in their life together riven was calmer than ever. she’d say “fuck, riv im freaking out, why are you so calm? is freaking me even more…” and classic riven would chuckled an amused laugh because god she was cute.

“come here…” he would hug her and say “im calm because it’s us and we will figure it out together, muse, we always do…” in his mind, he could only think of how much he loves her and that maybe it would be nice to have a mini musa love too

- overprotective riven would be at it’s finest during pregnancy which musa thought it was cutest thing ever… for about month and then it started to drive her insane because he wouldn’t let her lift a pen. “riv, this is ridiculous, opening a can of beans won’t be the end of me” she says, he gets the thing out of her hands and say dead serious: “opening cans are dangerous, love. you are creating a whole person right now, go look pretty while sitting there and let me”

- riven would talk to their baby every night, no lullaby or cute stories ofc. he’d tell about their missions together, would explain all about mommy’s powers and about every single type of sword that exists because “kid, you have badass parents so you gotta get used to it”

- towards the end musa would prank him all the time “RIVEN MY WATER JUST BROKE” and he would fall for it and freak out every time, running around to get their bags 

- they wait until birth to know the gender but they were certain that it was going to be a boy… well, they were wrong. little sadie was born just as the sun was raising in the sky, healthy and perfect with a full head of dark hair and rosy cheeks just like her mom and beautiful green eyes like her dad.

- at first it was hard ‘cause sadie was the most stubborn baby ever but could you blame her? she’s her parents daughter after all… but eventually, after many sleepless nights and never ending days, they get the rang of things

- riven was such a girl’s dad, he would let her do absolutely everything to him from branding his hair, to painting his nails or reading his mind. “daddy, whats a wanker?” she would ask while he drives her to daycare after a car cuts them in traffic. “oh god, get out of my head kid.” he would answer fondly as always, looking through the review mirror to catch the green that matches his turn into purple. he absolutely loved that part, to see a piece of him turn into musa was simply magical.

- and sadie was a such a specialist’s daughter. she was fierce and fearless just like her dad, loving superhero movies and choosing every type of combat’s classes over ballet (and riven did mock musa so much for thing). she was for sure the bravest kid at any playground…

- but she was also a mindy fairy which could be confusing for a little kid. sadie cried the whole way home after the first time she felt that the other girls at school didn’t like her. neither riven nor the promise of icecream was able to make her feel better, only her mom’s hug.

“mommy, make it go away.” she pleaded in her mother’s arms. her green eyes drowning in tears while musa hugged her strongly, stroking the girl’s long black hair “it’s alright, baby, mommy is here, daddy is here… we are gonna figure it out together.”

- not taking away her daughter’s pain hurt musa more than anything in her entire life but she didn’t anyway, instead she promised herself to be a better parent than her parents ever were and she helped sadie to understand/control her powers

- they talked for years about another kid, mostly riven who was constantly in a state of baby-fever and he finally convinced musa when sadie was four but it took them two years to get pregnant again… but don’t get it wrong they were happily trying for those two years 😏

- and this time both of them were calmer from the start because they knew that no matter what happened… they’d figure it out together, as always.

honestly, you're so right, charlie is an iced coffe type of person. he makes sure he gets just enough ice that he can rattle it around and try and piss off cameron w the noise. jokes on him cameron likes the sound

he also seems like the type of person to enjoy an espresso shot but not out of actual enjoyment of the espresso but the caffeine benefits.

cameron is definitely a tea person. he has a wide variety of different types of tea and is the person you go to when you need a cuppa at the end of the day.

despises coffee with all his being (once again so true) but actually likes the smell alot. he finds it quite comforting.

meeks doesn't have a preference but is very particular about how they're made. rlly likes a cappuccino though!

imagine being a little baby crocodile. you're destined to be an apex predator one day, the most powerful animal in your ecosystem. once you reach maturity, you'll be absolutely untouchable--but for now, you're barely bigger than a lizard and even a raccoon could snack on you. so you crawl inside your mother's mouth because you know instinctively that the most dangerous place is also the safest. her instincts and hormones, the product of millions of years of evolution, are telling her to cradle you gently, and not bite down. but what happens when she gets hungry enough? desperate enough? what will she chose when her own life is on the line, and it's down to you or her?

anyways, this is what was happening in my head when i wrote cao ang's relationship with his father. :v :v :v :v
