A Moment Between Chapter 20 and 21: So You’d Want More

Summary: just little moments that I thought up after posting a chapter or just didn't flow like I wanted to

You were nervous-fingers typing away on an essay that you honestly had no clue on how to write. Yet here you were-winging it- teeth slightly grinding and you swear you were sweating. Yoongi was typing away his eyes casting to the paper files then back to his desk top- after he had asked you out on a date you had instantly fallen into a slightly awkward yet comfortable silence. You had finished what little work Jin had given you- having argued that you could handle more yet the older Alpha shook his head and huffed that you had a paper to write. An economics paper- the dreaded paper one that you only had a title page for and nothing else. The five page paper that was due by the end of the night. You were at this point just bullshitting half of the stuff you were writing and you couldn’t help the anxious laughter as you suddenly dropped your head down into your arms. Groaning.

“Pup?” Yoongi mumbles, making you shake your head as your laughter slightly grows as you move to sit back up as you look at him- his head slightly tilting as his slick back hair slightly moves as he sits back away from his computer. His eyes were moving from you to your computer screen and his smile grew as he watched you pout. “What is it?”

“I hate Economics-and yeah I get it it is very important for this career but still- it feels pointless.” You ramble as he chuckles “And this paper-this paper is literally gonna drive me to jump out your window- I don't understand the topic I was given let alone whatever-that mess I’ve written.” You finished with a huff, eyes closing arms crossing over your chest as you hear him inhale- the sound of his chair rolling right next to yours, his body heat radiating off of him onto you as his arms slid across the back of your chair, the other gripping your laptop and scrolling up.

“Let me see if I can help.” He mumbled making your nod as you unconsciously leaned your head against his shoulder making him tense up slightly-which in turn made you inhale and lift your head. Though his hand lands on your shoulder and slides up your neck making you look over as he smiles at you.

“Sorry I just wasn't ready for that, come back here." he whispered, making you smile as you moved to rest your head back on his shoulder. His hand is still pressing against your neck- his thumb running against your scent gland as he reads through your works-half chuckling at certain parts and then he stops and removes his hand from your neck, sliding it under you and reaching around to the keyboard to delete and retype a sentence. “That was worded horrible-how are you a senior in college.”

“I'm second in my class.”

“If they saw the sentences that would change everything.” He mumbles a teasing tone as you smack his leg making him chuckle as you feel lips press to the top crown of your head. “Also if this is you bullshiting I really want to read a paper of yours actually trying. I can see why you’re top of your class.”

“Second.” You grumbled making him huff as he stopped scrolling and moved his hand to your thigh.

“I know the only reason why you’re second and not first is because you’re an omega-so you to me are top of the class.” His words had your face heating up- your mind going hazy as you let out a soft purr like sound making him chuckle as you pull away and clear your throat, though he doesn't let you get far. “Hey-hey look at me-well hello there baby.” he muttered when seeing how dilated your eyes were-it had you closing your eyes, hands reaching to cover your face but his hands caught your wrist. “Oh no don't hide.” He chuckled his minty breath fanning your face as you felt the tip of his nose against yours as his lips gently brush against yours. “You’re fucking adorable.” he mumbled arms wrapping around you after he had turned your chair towards him. His nose brushed into your hair as you awkwardly bent forward.

“Small.” you whispered, making him chuckle again as he pulls back hand moving to your neck, thumb at the base of your chin as his pointer fingers brushes against your ear. It had you whining as he smiled at you. “Stopppp.” You whine making his laughter grow even more.

“Comeback-then we’ll work on this paper together okay? I’ll be your wall to bounce ideas off of.” nodding you let yourself breath-closing your eyes as you tried to focus on you. The way your clothes move against your skin, your hair was being slightly tugged at by the hair tie-the way his skin burned yours. It had you opening your eyes and blinking rapidly as you huff at the Alpha in front of you-his half gummy smile as his brown eyes stared into you. The feeling of his hand back at the base of your neck-brushing agasing against your scent gland really wasn't helping you ground yourself.

“Stop.” You grumbled, arms moving to push his hand away as he bites a laugh- his head shaking as he dropped his hand from your neck-though the moment his body heat wasn't against yours you felt this overwhelming feeling of sadness-of fear. His eyes widened as your sweet  cookie scent started to burn as he quickly moved back in front of you-hand placing itself right back at the base of your neck, thumb moving across your skin as he pressed his forehead against yours. It had your scent changing- sweetening back up as he chuckles at you.

“Though you knew how to control your drops without an Alpha." His teasing words came after a couple of minutes of the two of you justin sitting there-it had you huffing eyes opening-mind clear as you pushed his hand off of your neck as you stuck your tongue out at him.

“Don’t make me rethink going on that date.”

“Oh no whatever shall I do-” he mumbles sarcastically, making you swat at his arm as he let out a soft chuckle as he grabbed the bottom of your chair moving his legs apart so he could roll you and your chair between them. Squishing your knees in the process. “My little Alpha heart can’t take the thought.” He pauses, eyes locked with yours as his hands resting on your thigh as you let out a shaky breath-his hand sliding up your thigh the feeling of his warm calloused hand against your skin had you shivering. Your inner omega rolling on her back- submitting- yet you fell frozen. “Of you not with me tonight.” He mumbled his fingers drawing shapes as he kept his eyes locked on yours. “Just pains me to my core.” His lips suddenly touch yours, his hand squeezing as you let out the most drawn out whine you’ve ever heard. It had him chuckling as he pulled away.

“Why’d you stop?”

“So you’d want more.” He shrugged, making you huff as he pushed you back to your original spot. Rolling next to you as he smiled at you. “Now let's get this paper finished.”

Tbh I'm with Zoro re:Nika v Luffy. Luffy is full of love for the world and adventure, almost as much as he loves his friends. Nika willingly staying separate from the world Luffy adores so much is a HUGE red flag that It's No Longer Luffy In The Driver's Seat. They're probably very, very similar, but would it be enough for the Straw Hats? I imagine it would be for some of them, but besides King of Hell over there I think Jimbei and maybe Brook would notice the difference and care.

And you’re completely right.

Luffy under normal circumstances would never leave the crew. He loves them and the world and adventure, why would he ever leave? He doesn’t remember the situation that lead to him fully becoming Nika in the first place so he doesn’t understand Nika’s incessant calling to leave this world behind.

As for the rest of the crew….

When Zoro fully became Asura and rewrote the universe, he also took the crew’s memories of the world without Luffy.

They have no clue the current reality is different. There are moments where awareness slips in. Where they go “something here isn’t right?” But they are all together and happy so it’s not that big of a deal. The moments are easy enough to sweep under the rug.

I think if any of the crew did remember the reality without Luffy they would agree with Zoro’s decision. They don’t know that Nika had made a plain of existence just for them. That they would reunite with Nika after death. For them Luffy was gone and he was eternally alone. They would agree with Zoro’s decision because of the information they had.

Jimbei and Brook probably have more “this isn’t right” moments than the others because they have been around longer. Their age and experience tipping them off more. Robin probably realizes it as well but I wouldn’t put it past her to put all the pieces together and agree with Zoro’s actions. The crew was willing to fight the world government for her, she to would rip apart reality for her captain.

No the problem is Ace

Ace who remembers it all. Zoro tries to block it out but Ace was in Nika’s divine realm. He was privy to information the Strawhats didn’t have. He knew that they would all be together for eternity. And Zoro separating Luffy from Nika could have major consequences.

Ace pulls Zoro a side to tell him this. But it’s Ace and Zoro and they aren’t the best at communicating.

And Ace is also so conflicted because on the one hand Zoro not only divided Luffy’s soul but he also took Luffy’s freedom. It’s a beautiful cage but a gilded cage is still a cage. It was Luffy’s choice to merge with Nika. Zoro is disregarding Luffy’s choice and freedom.

But at the same time how can he be mad. He has both of his brothers back and they are all free, as far as the other two know. Because Luffy has no clue he’s in a cage. He’s completely free to do whatever he wants in this plain of existence. Is it truly freedom if he can’t leave? But is he truly trapped if he doesn’t know about the cage?

Ace’s head hurts. Philosophy was never his thing and he desperately wishes Sabo, Deuce, or Marco were in his place because while Sabo is here he doesn’t remember the old reality either.

So Ace confronts Zoro about it. About how this is going against Luffy’s will. About how this could have consequences they don’t even understand yet.

And Zoro just smirks at him and asks if it’s not a demons job to go against their god?

Ace is immediately on the defensive wanting to know if Zoro will completely disregard Luffy’s wants and decisions from here on out.

Zoro responds with “of course not. He is my captain and I his first mate.” He would do anything Luffy asked him for. But Luffy would never ask him to release him. How could he when Zoro stand between Luffy and anything that could ever make him want to leave again.

Ace threatens to tell Luffy the truth. To which Zoro tells him if he does then that would make them enemies. But he’s not to worried because he knows Ace is having trouble remembering things. He might have failed to fully block Ace’s memories in the first place but the more time Ace spends in this world the more natural it will be. After all this is a new chance for Ace to be human. To be with his brothers. He wouldn’t want to mess that up, would he?

Ace knows all these things. Can feel the memories of before getting hazier. He knows his brothers are happy here and there is no reality where he would try to take their happiness from them. But Luffy’s freedom was taken from him and that he can’t forgive “even if I forget everything else I will always remember that you, Roronoa Zoro, are a demon.”

Zoro just smiles at him and starts to walk back to the others. As he passes Ace he pauses and leaves the freckled man with one final thought. “We should pretend to be on good terms. If you’re always attacking me, Luffy could end up hating you.”

It’s an empty threat, Zoro knows. Knows that Luffy could never hate Ace. But seeing the two of them fighting nonstop would upset Luffy. Zoro has no desire to fight Ace, as long as he stays in line. And he knows exactly what will keep Ace in line.

Because Ace is having a full meltdown down. Could Luffy hate him? He’s in the right! Zoro took Luffy’s freedom. Zoro cut Luffy’s soul in half. Is it wrong for Ace to want to restore Luffy’s soul? To bring back the divine plain? But Luffy loves his crew and adventure. Is his brother better off in this world where he can go on adventures forever with his loved ones. Where he’s not the only one responsible for the safety of the world? Would Luffy hate him for breaking this reality? For fighting with Zoro?

Could Ace survive without Luffy’s love?

It’s a moot point. Luffy will always love Ace. But Ace’s self hate has never been able to understand that.

Zoro wants Luffy to be with the crew because Luffy hates being alone more than anything. And the crew loves him. Zoro loves him

Ace going to the literal devil who just rewrote the universe to have his way and standing in front of him like “you I have a problem with you and I’m going to fight you.” Like poor boy has a split devil fruit (now shared with Sabo) that’s not even awakened and is staring down the King of hell with no plan or back up. Keep bitting off more then you can chew Ace. Never change.

so i had a thought about ashrah and syzoth and i really dont know how to feel about it so i want your input. and keep in mind i am still new to MK lore and dont understand the ins and outs of it like most other people do. but i read that in past timelines at least, demons of the netherrealm were dead bodies reanimated by quan chi. so i was wondering, how do you feel about the idea of ashrah having been syzoths wife in her past life, probably unbeknownst to her. does it make sense, the implications of it, etc.

anyways: this is so good and yet evil oh my god??????? it probably wouldn't work in canon unless stuff got retconned, but the implications here are so interesting to me regardless and you could do so much stuff character-wise (especially for ashrah) with this concept.....

first off, don't worry about not knowing extensive details about mk lore. it's bound to be confusing for someone new to the franchise, and even then plenty of us who've been here for a while don't entirely know what's going on either. i had to look up half the shit i mention in this post just to make sure i'm not off by a bunch

syzoth would have the biggest mental breakdown ever if this were a thing. poor guy can't catch a break

this would be a lot for ashrah, if she were to find out or otherwise put the pieces together. i mean, her whole thing is wanting to be fully human, and yet in this idea, she's not aware that she once already was human. that would be absolutely wild and 100% turn her entire world upside-down if she were to ever find out that truth.

the angst in this idea would go crazy. I LOVE IT. i think that syzoth would be reluctant to get close in any way with ashrah (at least initially) because, even if he doesn't know about how some demons are dead people brought back to life, ashrah physically resembling + sounding like his dead wife would mess with his head SO much.

poor ashrah, too; she's trying to learn what it means to be human and make friends with all these new people, and everyone in the good-guys group seems to be willing to be open with her--except for syzoth. and she has zero clue why. of course, because of their similar pasts and common struggles, they'd probably be drawn to each other anyways, but it'd be 10x more depressing than in canon

i imagine in this concept, shang killed her and then gave her corpse to quan chi. i don't think shang tsung would've given syzoth's family the dignity of dying in the living forest, tbh, i personally believe he dragged them off somewhere far away to die (which is also how i imagine syzoth went so long without knowing they were dead in the first place. easier to keep him in the dark about his family's fate if he's not aware of where they are). alternatively, ashrah could be put in a similar boat to old-timeline hanzo, who was a vengeful spirit of the netherrealm after being killed by bi-han, and then continuously manipulated by quan chi. i guess she would have to be somehow turned from a spectre to a demon, but i'm sure they can figure it out with magic lmfao

you're sort of right about the reanimated/reincarnation thing, it just doesn't apply to every type of demon. (more lore explanation under the cut bc i rambled a lot and it got a bit long oops) (if you read up on all this already and this information is useless to you i sincerely apologize in advance)

the lots of different demon types in mortal kombat: imps, oni, the enenera, cambions, and other miscellaneous ones. iirc there was also gonna be another class called "elder demons" (like elder gods but not really???? i guess???) in an older game but that was scrapped.

there’s technically a difference between the oni and other demons, because quan chi in the old timeline was an oni before he turned into a demon after mastering sorcery. so i guess oni are like… lower than demons??? or something?????? i’m not actually sure what the difference is between the two tbh 😓

we know that the enenra are created from the souls of slain mortals, so they'd be an example of an undead person coming back as a demon, as mentioned in this very sad scenario. the only enenra that we've actually met in canon is smoke, who was explained to be one after dying as a child via his mk9 ending

it's really fucked up lol, some cult kidnapped & sacrificed him when he just a kid

so that would be one example of how in this au/scenario/thing, ashrah could've had a human life once and not be aware of it. this tracks pretty well with mk9 smoke not remembering his previous life or death, until his early memories came back to him after so long.

the only issue is that smoke was reborn as an enenra right after he was killed, and after he took out his revenge on the cultists, he woke back up in his human body with no memories of his previous life. so i assume this would apply to any other enenra: they die, come back and do their thing, then go back to their original bodies right where they died with no memories of their old lives. they don't minecraft respawn in the netherrealm, which is where ashrah is from. but if pre-death ashrah in this au was dragged to the netherrealm and then killed, then brought back as a demon that's further manipulated by quan chi's dark magic, i guess it could work?????

(speaking of the enenra: in one of his mk1 intros with ashrah, smoke mentions dreaming of the enenra. so either tomas already died in this new timeline & just isn't aware of it, OR he's gonna kick the bucket soon and come back as an enenra. either way, we should probably prepare his funeral in advance lmfao).

there have also been demons that aren’t enenra, but are still dead people reincarnated by quan chi, as you mentioned. they're really obscure characters -- i had to look them up to make sure i wasn't making this up in my head lmfao -- but in the show mortal kombat: conquest there's siann, mika, and sora. they're undead corpses of the netherrealm that were brought back to life as demons via quan chi's magic

from my understanding (i haven't watched mk:c, i just read their wiki page) they were basically being forced to work for quan chi otherwise he threatened take away their living forms, which sucks. also mika might have a crush on quan chi….. for some reason???

the difference between these three and the enenra, though, is that they seem to actually be aware that they're undead lol. but maybe that's just because quan chi keeps threatening them with being corpses again if they don't follow his orders (again, haven't watched mk:c). who knows! their wiki page isn’t that long and doesn’t give me much info so i don’t have much to go off of 🤷🏻‍♂️

ashrah in mk1 does have a canonical demon type; she mentions that her and her sisters are cambions in an intro with kitana, hence how sareena can seamlessly change between her human-ish and demon form. i don’t thiiiink cambions are “reborn”/undead the same way the enenra would be? in irl folklore “cambion” is used to refer to either a changeling — which makes sense given sareena — or a demon-human hybrid. i really doubt ashrah’s the latter, though, so i suppose she just... spawned into existence as a cambion one day. or maybe she has demon parents running around somewhere. idk bro

i guess what i’m trying to tie together here is that in the “ashrah is a reborn dead person but doesnt know it and unfortunately said dead person is syzoth’s dead wife” nightmare scenario you’ve presented to my inbox, it could go a few ways:

she’s an enenra

same situation as the mk:c girls

hanzo-esque situation (although he's not a demon so. idk)

the second one is probably more in line with what you're thinking of, except that unlike the mk:c girls, ashrah would be kept in the dark that she's a reanimated corpse of a human woman.

and, i said this earlier, but i'll say it again: this would be a wild twist for ashrah character-wise. imagine: she’s fighting for her absolution, fighting to be a human and rid herself of her demonic nature, and then it turns out all along that at one point, there was a time ashrah was human. she had a human life and appearance once, and it was all ripped from her one day and she had no idea. even if her previous life wasn’t related to syzoth or anyone else on the roster, that would still suck. but on the other hand, i think it would give her even more incentive to purify her soul & finally kill quan chi. she'd be hurt, angry, want vengeance for the human woman she once was. the woman that was wrongfully murdered for a sorcerer's selfish gains. the possibilities are endless!!!

i dunno what else to put here or how to end this off, but i've got so many thoughts now... oughh

Adventures in MTAS datamining (pt. 1/?: art assets)

Because I am incredibly normal about this game, I’ve been poking around in the game’s files (and MTAP’s, too) pretty much ever since I got it. Unity games are pretty easy to datamine, since tools are already out there, which is incredibly fortunate for fueling the hyperfixation. I wanted to share some of the more interesting things I’ve found on my travels. Spoiler warning: There are some midgame spoilers below (i.e. starting with the water tower). There’s also one thing that might be a future spoiler, which is at the very end and marked accordingly.

General disclaimer: If you’re curious to try datamining out yourself, feel free to ask me for how-to’s, but please be careful! Never edit the game’s files directly. Make copies and back up your save files. You’ll also need a good amount of RAM (I recommend at least 16 GB) to be able to handle tools like AssetStudio, since you’ll be loading assets directly into memory. And MTAS has a lot of assets. You may also encounter unreleased future content in there...so preemptive spoiler warning for that as well.

Since there’s so much to dig through, this post will only focus on some of the art/visual things. These can either be found under StreamingAssets > AssetBundles, or StreamingAssets > AssetBundles > art_asset. I can’t really comment too much on the 3D assets (meshs, textures) since I don’t know too much about modeling, but here are some other interesting things I found!

Cutscene thumbnails

You can find thumbnails of the cutscenes without the builder in them. The in-game album uses different thumbnails, which look like screenshots taken when it’s playing for the first time (hence why skipping a cutscene won’t put it in your album). Some of them actually really nice. Wallpaper-worthy, even.

The one they use for the kidnapping cutscene is incredible.

In The Tumbleweed Standard, the monthly issues are accompanied by these photos. Something about the filter makes it look pretty. Here are my personal favorites:

So, uh...Qi has an alternate set of character art. No other character has one (except Elsie for story reasons). I assume this’ll be a DLC outfit, like those in MTAP? Kinda weird how only one would be loaded into the files so far. The asset name doesn’t really give any pointers, it’s just marked as “Qi2″. It only exists as character art, no model or texture or anything like that.

So is this past Qi? Future Qi?? Qi for one day if he’s forced to wear something nice for a change??? It looks like the neat and complete version of his normal outfit. You can see the same shirt and tie, same pants (except they aren’t rolled up at the ankles anymore?), same shoes. I’m also just now noticing that his suit jacket’s the same color as the mobile suit, haha funni joke. Again, not a single other character besides Elsie has an alternate outfit yet in these files. What is this for?! I have no fuckin clue, but I can say that Qi cleans up pretty nicely 👀

And that’ll wrap up this little datamining dive! I’ll probably come back to the art in the future, once more gets added, or if I find some other things to share. In the next parts, I’ll be showing off some of the audio and text data, but I do want to wait until future game updates for some of it. Hope you found this as interesting as I do!

Edit 2: Unfortunately, as of several beta builds pre-release, full suit Qi has largely been removed. The full art version isn’t in the files anywhere, but there are still some map icons of him. Not sure if this is something for postgame content or a romantic mission they didn’t have time to add. We’ll have to see :P

18 - Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

english isn't my first language. i write dialogue in another language 99% of the time. i don't think this question really takes into account the amount of ESL writers who are basically always doing this

to stay closer to what the question was meant to ask though, i have written sentences, in the middle of english fics, in languages that me or most readers don't speak. it is usually either a LONG process of looking up grammar rules, vocabulary, existing sentences etc... or what i did once, "write with mistakes because the person is learning the language still"

it is good imo to have characters speak their native tongue, or to add your own HCs onto characters and make them speak in their new native tongue, but it can be done more or less respectfully and more or less clearly. how do you include a translation, if at all ? is it jarring in the flow of your fic ? what about inserting song lyrics in another language ? it's a case by case basis for me tbh, and as a reference i really love how yuri on ice did it during the anime

i don't recall what i first wrote for exactly but i first posted for death note in 2015 :0 a while back !!

Either she legit forgot what actually happened or she changed it to spice it up for... whatever reason. Nesta already feels guilty for a lot of things, including the ones where she's not even at fault. Why the hell try to make her out to be this monster that she isn't?! For angst? So she can fill the pages, since she didn't know what else to write?! Literally, what was the point of changing that???? That whole scene was dumb anyways because it felt like Sarah wanted some badass moment, using Tamlin as a punchbag so we can all scream "OMG YASSS QUEEN".

Queen of forshadowing my ass. Her villains and ships are obvious as hell and there are plenty of plotholes left. There's a map, a clear worldbuilding, yet we've been only in the night court for 4 books. Her characters are the most powerful people in the whole universe, but need whole armies and as much as help to kill of the Hybern King. There's no logic behind the magic system either.

okay I didn't remember that quote from acosf about Tamlin asking Nesta to take Feyre's place, but you're right, that was stated in acosf, and it NEVER HAPPENED in acotar. I just checked my ebooks to be sure. ldjalkdjaslkjdlakjslkjasd That's so fucking funny because you're right, Nesta already had enough reasons to loathe herself, and tbh she doesn't need rational, real reasons to do so, sometimes you just hate yourself lmaoooo It's not like the intervention scene where she was able to literally rewrite it from acofas to acosf, sjm just completely retconned that fact from four books ago.

I know people have a lot of fun making theories and trying to figure out the next books, but literally sjm does not plan like that. Everything revolves around who she wants to bang. She figures that out, then makes the plot fit around that, to make the banging happen. She doesn't sit there thinking about the meaning of colors, she literally said in an interview that the Valkyrie bracelet colors were just a vibe, but people are out here acting like the curtains are blue!

If she didn't leave *some* hint as to where things were going, she'd be even worse than a bad writer. She's a pantser which is totally fine, but you're right. All these little details are so freaking inconsequential, unless she decides later on that she wants them to be meaningful. Then in retrospect it's like "omg, look at this clue she left for us" when I'm willing to bet that she did it retroactively.

I do think, to her credit, the reason we're so invested is because she does the characters and their psychology well. I just rewatched my acowar reread video from 2018 (I can link it if y'all want) which I posted prior to the acofas release, and I was right about the characters. I was right about how Nesta and Elain would grieve their father and feysand having a baby soon (I said I wouldn't be surprised if it happened, despite what Feyre said.) I did say that I thought Cassian knew Mor is queer, which I haven't been proven right about - however, I am not convinced that she is executing that issue of Mor being queer particularly well.

SJM's characters are her strength, and so if I make predictions, it's based on that. Where they're at psychologically, how they are reacting to situations, who is mated, who is sad about mates, what kind of circumstances characters are in, where they want to be. If we were to break down the effort she puts into different parts of her writing, it would be like 50% characters and characterization, 45% romance, and 5% everything else (world, plot, prose).

And that's another reason why I keep insisting that trying to figure out ships based on where plots might go is... a crapshoot at best. That's not the way she prioritizes. It's always 1) the couple/who she wants to bang, and then 2) whatever she needs to write to make that happen. "There's no plot for X ship" okay well we all read acosf, right? Because plot is not her priority or concern, she can and will do whatever it takes, no matter how inconsistent or ill-defined, to get two characters banging. There are things that make more sense, characters who are more or less connected to different plots than other characters. But never underestimate her willingness to make Amren have some random ass memory of something that changes the plot completely in order to make the ship she wants to happen, happen.

Whats the deal with the travelers? Are they real? Did one of them really end up leading the abyss order after the fall of khaenri'ah and did the other wake up 500 years later and search the entirety of teyvat for them? Is paimon real? no worries! i assume you're asking abt ajax' timeline of teyvat, bc the one he was sent back to (guizhong and morax') doesn't have the twins in it yet (twins are post-archon war stuff as far as we know? on paimon i've no clue), if it'll even have them at all. because-

the general answer is: i'm pretending the twins and paimon don't exist. not because i have anything in particular against them, but because i feel like we know so little about their lore that trying to fit them in to an au of this kind would only overcomplicate everything. as things in the fic stand, the twins were basically ocs by the game's creators that served as drivers for the story.

i have more thoughts about this? but it ended up being kinda long so i'll put them under the cut hahah;;

the tl;dr is you can believe whatever sounds more interesting. the arc and everything in the og timeline was always just context for everything that came after, so it's not all that important.

if i had to fit them somewhere, though, i'd probably say that the abyss twin dies in the chaos of the split, which makes the traveler decide to take drastic action and fully put their all into helping the archons gtfo of teyvat. basically the abyss twin dies and the remaining one sacrifices themselves to get the arc out of teyvat.

an alternaitve idea is that, upon finding out that the abyss order has been pupeteered by asmoday the entire time, the abyss twin decides that fuck it, they ball, and they join forces with the traveler to help the arc gtfo.

my main issue with all this is that, since we don't know squat about how powerful the twins are, i don't know if the split would've even been necesary given they could've gone and ended celestia if they teamed up. or alternaitvely, if they had helped in getting the arc out and stayed behind with the archons, if the world would be in a state as dire as rex lapis described it. so the only way this makes sense in my mind is if a) one of them dies in the chaos or b) they are somehow not strong enough combined to take down celestia and thus jump into the archons' plan. or the angsty route of c) celestia takes control of the abyss twin and either they make them kill the traveler or force the traveler to kill them? either way they both end up dying or functionally incapacitated (physically or emotionally).

so you can see how things get complicated hahah

that's why this au sort of chooses to interpret the twins as not having been real in the original timeline, but just ocs that the game added to tell the story more easily and without having to pick one of the historic figures to be the protagonist. that's kind of what childe has assumed all along, also.

so really, i'd say you can take your pick for whichever sounds the most interesting! since i was working under the assumption that the twins wouldn't affect the outcome of the story, really, you can believe what you want. i guess that means you could also choose to believe that the twins teamed up and helped the archons get the arc out, and it was just that rex lapis and ei never mentioned them? anything goes tbh

all that i said also applies to paimon btw. i know it's kinda mean but, again, since we know so little about her, i'm just working with the idea that she's just- an accessory, to the traveler. functionally speaking she's an extention of them. kinda mean but that's the only way that comes to mind to describe her. so like- if the twins were ocs, then so was paimon. if the twins joined forces with the archons, then so did paimon. if it ends in tragedy, then paimon was simply there for the traveler, and if the traveler dies, then- well idk. i'm not sure paimon can die. uh-

Oh yes, I would say it's not even "implied" as much as very clearly part of his backstory. He's kidnapped and trafficked and winds up with Marius because Marius purchases him.

I will say when I talked about this yesterday I said "Especially because Armand's experience of it doesn't fit neatly into RJ's whole 'rape makes you tougher' trope since Armand doesn't ask the reader to think of it as rape." which!!!!!! I will fine tune here and say I meant his experiences with Marius are the rape he doesn't try to sell us as rape. Please don't get me started on TVA meta and Armand's reliability as a narrator since we are in AMC land today on this post. He's clear about what happens to him when he's trafficked, and when Marius first "rescues" him he's so traumatized that he's nonverbal.

So it absolutely does not make him tougher; it makes him traumatized and vulnerable. I think even his respite of living with Marius is undone when he gets to the cult and re-embraces his fervent religious beliefs. It makes me wonder if he's overcorrecting and seeing his time with Marius as sin. He doesn't recover from this for like 300 years!

But that kinda leans into like a lot of the casual readers' ambiguity about who & what Marius is, also about Anne's intentions writing it/the branding contamination of her erotica career. I would even argue that a lot of casual readers don't even make it this far into the series, anyway. This is probably the most divisive book in the series because some people read it as fun vampire erotica that's just packed to the rafters with sexy & extremely common kink tropes, other people go WAIT WHAT THE FUCK? lol.

I'm not completely buying that the team on this show actually read the whole series, or at least not as deeply as fandom nerds have 😂, and like I think everyone has to remember that Tumblr & fandoming are echochambers and people outside in the regular world tend not to be this sensitive to these topics. Especially when it comes to topics that are more familiar in queer spaces. So it wouldn't surprise me if the Venice era was read uncritically. I almost wanna say maybe even read as Anne intended but what the fuck has this show told us about what Anne intended? LOL.

But there's a lot of ambiguity in TVA with Marius's intentions again don't let me waste Marius meta on an AMC post and the thing people often romanticize about him is that he rescued Armand. And like I just wonder if the show, seeing how they're handling Claudia, would lean into the like Ricean precocious child trope and try to play it off that Armand is asking for it or enjoying it.

And much like the way they're portraying Lestat, I think it's worth noting that Marius's actons often come from grounded places, and the harm he does is not always intentional. Personally I don't think the show has framed Lestat as particularly sympathetic, although they've given us some clues about why he's like this. I think fandom is really extrapolating on that stuff and woobifying him LOL so just. WHEW WOULD THEY DO THAT TO MARIUS? HAHA. fucken yiiikes.

I am *eating popcorn gif* waiting to see if the completely rampant Lestat apologism will extend to Marius bc it's hilarious to me that he has been demonized by fandom along with his fans but yet Domestic Abuser Lestat is just sad about his ex uwu louis is so mean 2 him

So anyway yeah idk man. I'm not thrilled with what the show is saying about teenagers and sexual assault so I definitely have some concerns about Armand. But I also feel like it would be such a cop out to age him up, because him being turned at 17 and looking like that is so important to his character. All of this stuff is important to his character. Like idk I don't want them to shy away from these topics but I just hope like, if there's meaningful feedback from Season 1 maybe they write it more sensitively and with more nuance going forward.

Heya! I saw that you are a Destiny lore expert, so I wanted to ask you something: do you think it's possible that Savathûn used Rasputin to shoot the Traveler?

We know that Savathûn somehow saved the Traveler during the Collapse and, as far as I know, nobody told us how yet, but I think it would explain a couple of things like the frozen Hive on Mars and why the Witness needed to gather information about the Collapse specifically from Mars

Now, I realize this sounds like a bit of a stretch and I'm pretty sure I'm missing some lore here (tbh, I still don't know if Rasputin shooting the Traveler is considered canon or not), but I wanted to ask if you think this theory can somehow stand or not

Hey! Thanks for asking :) It's a huge point of interest for me as it's a very unclear and contentious topic! But it's also very important for the lore going forward, with all the recent focus on new information about what happened during the Collapse.

First, to clear things, Rasputin shooting is not considered canon. As a matter of fact, most people consider it a crackpot theory that has been disproven many years ago. For context, this was a very popular theory that got used and abused to prove either that the Traveler is evil (because it wanted to leave) or that Rasputin is evil (because he shot) or that both of them are evil. The theory was incredibly annoying, especially when we didn't have enough information so it ended up being labelled as crackpot.

However, I disagree. The theory was "disproven" before Y3 od Destiny (Shadowkeep release). Shadowkeep, its associated seasons and everything released since has been filled with information that seems to be indicating otherwise. Not to mention that a lot of the new stuff is reframing our understanding of the Collapse and we are probably going to be getting a lot more information about it soon. My post discussing newer information about the possibility that Rasputin shot is here. I wrote it before Witch Queen so there's nothing about the newest info of Savathun being there, but it still mentions many details that seem to indicate that Rasputin may have shot after all.

Now we know that Savathun was involved. We don't know the full details because she didn't want to share them. The best info about her involvement with the Collapse comes from her worm, in Of Queens and Worms quest. This is all we know:

Savathûn’s Worm: Always violent. Fine. Have information. But only this. No more. Ever. Truth you seek. Humanity’s Collapse. Even the Witness deceived. The Witch Queen did its bidding. Earned its trust. Rode alongside to apocalypse. Watched many burn. But the Witness turned a violent gaze to Traveler. Witch Queen projected lies. Clever deceptions wrapped in shadow. Tides turned. Witness sent away, back amongst the stars. Ghost: Are you saying Savathûn deceived the Witness? Is she the reason humanity survived? Savathûn’s Worm: Not the reason. A reason. Not for humanity, but for Traveler. My promise, delivered. Will say no more. Ever.

Savathun deceived the Witness, projected lies and deceptions. This helped turn the tides and the Witness was "sent away." Ghost asks for clarification and the worm says that Savathun's trickery was not THE reason, but one of the reasons why we survived. So Savathun was involved, but she wasn't the only reason we survived. Her trickery helped, but there were other factors like Traveler's own actions and, possibly, Rasputin.

We have no clue what was the nature of this deception Savathun pulled on the Witness. Some theories:

Savathun projected a lie about the Traveler being defeated already which made the Witness leave (this would make most sense given that the Pyramid fleet remained completely dormant outside of the galaxy until the Traveler woke up at the end of the Red War. The Fleet must've thought the Traveler is dead and therefore had no reason to come back until it became clear that the Traveler is still alive).

Savathun tricked the Witness into leaving before the job was done by pretending she will do it herself. This may have involved Nezarec because we now know that he was the disciple assigned to our system and that he led the first wave of attacks on Earth, but he is also known as a "traitor" (to the Witness?) and as someone who commited a sin (to the Witness?). Savathun may have tricked both the Witness and Nezarec into believing that she will finish the job, but then betrayed them and also left Nezarec hanging which led to his death.

There's other theories and possibilities too. It's impossible to tell right now. Both Savathun and her worm were vague, and every other character that can tell us more is indisposed (Rasputin, Nezarec), our enemy (Nezarec, Witness) or we aren't aware of them yet (Neomuna).

However, Rasputin is known to have fought in the Collapse. He was very active and fought relentlessly against the Pyramid Fleet, though none of his attacks worked. He had a protocol ready for the event of the Traveler leaving: shoot it so it would be forced to react. That was the final desperate plan in case everything else failed (which it did).

Is Savathun aware of Rasputin? Was she aware of him back then? Could she have used him? I don't think she would've personally risked damaging the Traveler, since her only goal was to keep it alive, no matter the cost. So Savathun using Rasputin to shoot wouldn't fit her line of work, at least in my opinion. We don't really know and she may have been desperate enough to use Rasputin or just trick him into thinking he's working with an ally.

As you said, the Hive were in our system already around that time. They were on the Moon because the K1 research team scientists mention Hive tunnels and those huge bones in the Hellmouth. Nokris and Xol were also already active at the time of the late Golden Age and the Collapse. The lore on this is from last year's Festival of the Lost (a little bit goofy because it's lore of a Techeun telling Glint stuff during his investigation about "the headless ones"):

"Bray used the tools of the Vex, while Hive blasphemers practiced the magical art of necromancy." Her tone darkened. "Both succeeded, after a fashion."

"The early Hive experiments were done in secret, under the guidance of a powerful Wizard, whose name we'll not mention here."

"Nokris," Glint offered.

However, Nokris and Xol ended up being frozen on Mars until the end of the Red War, when the Traveler's awakening unfroze them. For the record, Nokris and Xol and their Hive were frozen on Mars due to Rasputin. He couldn't fight them so he used a protocol called "Siberian Entropy" to freeze that area of Mars, including his own bunkers and facilities:

"Rasputin activated protocol Siberian Entropy for a long term plan. Did I happen to find him on my own?"

So Rasputin definitely had altercations with the Hive, but it's unclear if he ever interacted with Savathun, knowingly or unknowningly.

Is it possible that Savathun's plan to save the Traveler involved Rasputin? Seems to be. Is it likely she used him? I don't think so, mostly because that's not her way of doing things (she doesn't brute force things; shooting seems more like a Rasputin-only action) and her plan seemed to have been mostly around tricking the Witness. However, if Rasputin did shoot, Savathun could've used the Traveler being damaged to convince the Witness that the Traveler been dealt with.

In my analysis of the new stuff in regards to whether or not Rasputin shot, I mentioned that we know the Traveler was being somehow affected by Darkness during the Collapse. I made a suggestion that the Traveler was being pulled by Darkness' gravity powers, since the Traveler does mention being "pulled":

You want to run, but you are pulled in all directions by opposite and equal forces that hold you perfectly still.

I also made a suggestion that perhaps the Darkness began overtaking the Traveler and the Traveler positioned itself in a way for Rasputin to shoot the part of it that was being corrupted; this would explain why there's a huge chunk of the Traveler missing and why it was blown away by some incredibly powerful force that propelled it possibly thousands of miles away (the Shard of the Traveler in EDZ: the only thing we know about the Shard is that it happened during the Collapse). Darkness doesn't use conventional weapons, neither does the Traveler and neither does Savathun. The only one shooting nukes around the planet was Rasputin.

This could also now be explained with Savathun. Maybe it wasn't the Darkness corrupting the Traveler, maybe it was Savathun's webweaver wizards holding it in place, just like during WQ. Maybe she did that to take the Traveler away and Rasputin shot it because he didn't understand what was happening. Or Savathun did it on purpose to make him shoot so that the Traveler would be forced into a state of dormancy to trick the Witness.

It's unclear right now. I believe we'll get a full explanation once Rasputin returns and we will be able to put this debate to rest once and for all. I think there's reasonable evidence that he did shoot, but all of that evidence can be explained in other ways as well. We just need to find out what really happened. No matter what Rasputin tells us, it should be huge for our understanding of the Collapse, Savathun's involvement, Nezarec and the Lunar Pyramid and the Witness. Rasputin was there and he knows.

And if for some reason he doesn't remember (he was damaged pretty badly in Arrivals), we're still left with Neomuna in Lightfall. Neomuna should be aware of what was going on during the Collapse since they remained hidden and were able to observe from afar. And on the topic of Rasputin, he was the one that helped them stay hidden and even deleted their location from his own database in order to ensure their safety. He's intrinsically linked with Neomuna, the Collapse and our survival.

Ever since Shadowkeep, we've been getting crumbs of new information and lore on the Collapse and what really happened. This has been increasing ever since then and WQ was huge with the reveal that Savathun was there and helped save the Traveler and, by proxy, humanity. But this story isn't over and we still need a lot more information to fully understand what happened. Rasputin waking up has to be a huge source of this information, and so does Neomuna. Probably Savathun as well when she is rezed again, and it's likely that when we assemble all relics of Nezarec, he might drop us some hint or two. And of course, I feel like the Witness will have things to say as well.

I fully believe next season will feature Rasputin up and operational in his new Exo body so he can give us information on his previous fights against the Black Fleet, the Collapse and information on Neomuna. Hopefully he will be able to shed more light on what happened, his perception of the Collapse and possibly, if he was able to identify Savathun's interference, more about what exactly she chose to do. I believe it's possible that Savathun used everything at her disposal to trick the Witness, even if that meant counting on Rasputin to follow his protocols.

so originally, carlos had tk in his phone as "tk" and then i remembered that couples change their partner's names to things like "baby", "babe", "love", etc and tbh i can TOTALLY see carlos doing this for tk with how far gone he was for him since episode 2 as soon as their relationship is defined. and then i knew once he realized that there was nothing saving their relationship (remember when marjan talked to him, he seemed so tired, and cut off from the convo sorta?) i can then see him changing it to something entirely impersonal. and i'm SO GLAD people picked up on all that just from a simple name change! that made me so proud as a writer.

on another note, for my vampire!buck au, i only looked up blood types super quick, but i have eddie as o positive, and that's the most common blood type, meanwhile taylor is ab negative, the most rare blood type....and if you go back to my little snippets when buck tastes both their blood, you'll see the direction i'm working towards with that. buck tasting eddie's blood and having this familiar taste, yet it's not cause it's eddie, and then when he's tasting taylor, that becomes a key factor why he's with her because it's like tasting a rare delicacy and he doesn't want to give it up yet. First, love your content and positive energy.

I totally agree that it's ok to be passionate and root for your ship, it's even ok to debate and disagree. But when one starts to harsss, make death threats, take screen shots of individuals and call them ugly, fat, etc., it truly says a lot about them. How did we forget those characters aren't real, but the person being attacked is. Social media has made it so easy to be ugly to one another.

I'm just glad SJM doesn't and will never write fanservice, so we know whatever direction she goes in, will be authentic to HER. Not what readers demanded of her. Besides, she has already told us why Elain and Lucien are mates, in both the books and in interviews.

She has never, as far as I'm aware, spoken about Elain and Az as a romantic pair. Whereas Elain and Lucien have been in the same conversations as Cassian + Nesta, Rhys + Feyre. That alone is all the evidence I need. Aside from it being CANON.

TBH, when I watch her interviews since ACOSF, she looks annoyed when Elriel questions come up, it's almost as if she's like - do I really need to explain once more Elain and Lucien are mates? I think BB simply wanted to profit off the warships and have asked she no longer speak on endgames until books are published. And it's not just applicable to ACOTAR, she couldn't say much about Bryce and Hunt, when it was so obvious they were mates. So, in terms of elucien, as obvious as it is they will be endgame, as it goes without saying they are MATES, she can't speak to it anymore until the book is out, even though she has. But just because she's likely contracted to remain silent, doesn't change what she's already gone on record saying.

She also has stated Lucien is one of her faves, so I really doubt she'd drag him through hell and break his heart a second time. I think he is going to have one of the biggest payoffs in the series. Others are starting to sense his power, which imo is stronger when he's near Elain, just as, as far as we know; her visiosn were triggered by his presence. We already see signs at how, as unaware as both are about it, bringing out their full potential. I truly believe they are destined for something big, in the way that Feysand, as potential high king and queen and Nessian, leading the Illyrian and Valkyrie armies. SJM doesn't mate characters for solely romantic reasons, they compliment each other in ways they also benefits the greater good of their world.

Besides, what has Azriel done for Elain in two years? Has he helped her get a grasp of her visions. Get to truly know her, help her embrace being fae? Lucien can't because he is respecting her boundaries, but if given a chance I know he'd do anything to build her up and give her a voice. Azriel HAS had the opportunity for 2 years, they basically see other daily if they choose to, she hasn't closed herself off to him, yet SJM made it very clear despite all this time, they still barely know each other and both characters are stagnant, they are simply going about their duties or simple life. And, by the end of ACOSF, as far we know neither have spoken since winter solstice and Azriel has built a foundation for a friends to lover trope with Gwyn. It is Gwyn who's music he hears, Gwyn is the reason his chest sparked. All mate clues since TOG! Anyone who denies it are kidding themselves. Just as Elains eyes sparked upon seeing Lucien. It is HIS heart she hears.

I think it is SO obvious and none of these characters have to be rewritten to make it work, SJM had already laid the pieces to their puzzle and how they fit. Once Elain was mated to Lucien, SJM has been telling us he's the sun to her need of sunshine. Gwyn, she is the one Azriel never saw coming after years of longing for the wrong females. What's that saying? When you stop looking for love, it finds you. I think that's exactly what Gwyn will be for Azriel. And Lucien is everything Elain dreamt off once she gets to truly know him. He'd give her everything and more. We already know Lucien loves passionately and fiercely, imagine when he and elain truoy get to know each other and fall in love, the lengths he'd go for her. He will be elains greatest love, because there is nothing stronger than a mating bond in SJMs world.

This is an author who says she plants seeds for future stories books in advance which equates to years of planning. And anyone arguing that E/riel was meant to have a relationship because of all the hints she placed for them throughout is purposely ignoring the fact that she placed just as many hints as to why they were never going to be endgame. Of course there were romantic hints for E/riel because she did in fact write the Az POV Bonus Chapter showing us that E/riel were about to engage in a little "romantic" fun (though romance isn't really the right word here). And I think they're missing the fact that any "Mate like coding" was never really Mate like coding at all. It was Az convincing himself that maybe he should have been Elain's Mate for all the wrong reasons. You can't look at a book and say, "but these words right here are words similar to so and so used and they're endgame!" without looking at the circumstances surrounding it. The similarities are just as important as the differences. That's what happens with obsession. It sounds like love, it feels like love to some, but at the end of the day, it's not really love and is quite problematic. It's not like Az hasn't done anything at all for Elain but if you pay attention, you realize that everything Az did was based off him watching how others acted with Elain and him copying that behavior. None of it was driven by his own strong need to reach out to her. And everything about Gwyn and Az is refreshing. I'm not saying they won't have their own angst and drama because SJM isn't a cotton candy kind of romance writer but you can already tell their relationship feels right. It's not wrapped in a cloak of Az's self loathing and worthlessness. And YES! Why do people want to downplay the fact that SJM really likes Lucien? He has played a pretty important role in every single ACOTAR book, she based him off Sam Heughan's portrayal of Jamie Fraser (and that man is just HOT in that), she always intended for Lucien to have a love interest (first Nesta until she realized that would fail spectacularly). And if Nesta was not right for Lucien than means Lucien's person would need to be opposite of Nesta and there are not two characters more different than one another than Nesta and Elain. In the SJM world, Mates are the peak of romance. Why in the world would she reduce Lucien (one of her favorite Males and someone how already lost his first true love) to being given an unfulfilled Mating bond? Why would she make Elain, a character she said would be her best friend because they have matching energy, the only sister to be given a poorly matched Mating Bond? I'll never understand why people can't understand that she had to create conflict between Elain and Lucien until it was time for their book. I loved everything you said, thanks again for the ask!!!

I thought it was so weird how simon said that someone must've died down there since they can talk to each other, when they know that maddie died there??? like what?

I think that Simon was referring to that specific room (if I understood the basement layout correctly, they went through a door from the room/area where Maddie died into some kind of nuclear fallout shelter in the school). Since Simon couldn't see Maddie just from stepping out of Ms. Fields' room and into the hall, I think he meant that someone else (besides Maddie) must have died in the room next to the one she died in because he could still see her. The thing that initially made me suspicious of Simon (and hasn't entirely left) is how he seems to have a lot of unrequited feelings for Maddie, and he's shown irritation/suspicion of others who get close to her (like, maybe I read it wrong, but it was odd to me that he seemed initially more upset that Maddie didn't call him when she had her accident, than a real fear the Mr. Anderson's behavior was predatory in some way, which seemed like a weird detail to focus on), and his initial grief in the first episode read like potential guilt to me, but that being said, there's a lot of stuff he's done while following Maddie's instructions that would make him look potentially more guilty for her murder, so if he is trying to cover things up, I don't understand why he would do any of that. I don't think it's impossible for him to be the murderer (I actually think it could be a really interesting twist, depending on how it's executed), but I would definitely need a solid explanation for some of his behavior to make sense.

All that being said, I do think the show has been pretty unclear on the boundaries of death and how it interacts with the spaces where Maddie is visible. We know Simon can see her in Mr. Anderson's classroom and Ms. Fields' classroom because those were once the guidance counselor's offices (where Rhonda died). He can see her at the football stadium (tbh I was a little unclear on how much of the stadium that encompassed) because of Wally's death. He can see her in the cafeteria because of Charley. Presumably he can see her in the theater (though I'm not sure we've had a scene with them together in the theater?) because of the girl who died from the falling light. I'm not totally sure about the bus stop? Is that because of the band kids? We also know that he can see her in that shop room where the car is, and I don't think we've gotten an explanation of who died there (unless they're counting the rat, but like... if we're counting animals, you'd think that would cover a lot of ground, so I assume we're not counting the rat)? They also talked in that outdoor/concrete area (covered outdoor basketball court, maybe?) with the picnic tables in episode 2- no clue who died there. And, unless I missed it, we don't know where on campus Mr. Martin, Dawn, or the other two kids who are always around, but never say anything, died yet. You'd think that might be something Maddie would have asked people, because she knows those are the only places she can talk to Simon. It would be nice to understand the rules of the boundaries caused by the deaths. Rhonda died in a room that was divided into two rooms, but both of those rooms still allow Simon to see Maddie, but the moment he steps into the hall, he can't. But then Wally died on the actual football field, but Simon I think could still see Maddie in the stands? I would love some clarification on how that all works.

Anyway, sorry for this incredibly long response- I just really enjoy thinking through the logic/rules of a world, and that one is an interesting one. I am currently on team "Simon is not my #1 suspect, but he is definitely not off the board entirely" atm, because even though I do actually like him, just liking a character is far from enough to clear them.

EDIT: Also, if Simon had killed Maddie, that would be a bit of an explanation as to why he can see her, when no one else seems to have been able to make contact on either side. So far, the only thing they've come up with is like how strong his connection is to her? But why did Mr. Figueroa never see Charley? Why did Wally's mom never see him? We don't know a ton about those relationships (and arguably Wally's mom had a poor connection to him), but it would be an explanation as to why Simon and Maddie are different from those other relationships where the those characters were on school grounds repeatedly and didn't see a lost loved one. But 🤷‍♀️ I could probably talk myself into being suspicious of almost anyone.

thank YOU for responding to that unduly long ask! life has been interesting so far and I am very thankful for the people I met and the insights I have gained into other industries/countries through people that were immersed in them. I actually got into kpop that way - friend of a coworker of a friend who has personally worked for the p ost-production of this idol's MV and hey! check out this new single they put out! -

honestly I think kpop as an industry carries a bit of mysticism to it for fans (especially western ones) but actually if you talk to people inside it it is mostly just like any other creative industry. You are absolutely right the growth in behind the scenes will never match the output in stars/idols. This is true also for adjacent spaces like football interviews/sports content staff in SK.

Working in the ent. industry as any type of staff is brutal in SK (as it is in most places, to be fair, LA is looking grim) which is why those who have a say in calling the shots prefer idols who they know will get the job done and with a smile on their face. One of the guys I met had a very nice way of putting why more seasoned idols are preferred to 4th gen and that's because "any excessive pride has been snuffed out of them early on in their career". Fortunately if there's one thing I kept happily from the people I met it's that truly most 2nd gen and a lot of 3rd gen idols are very pleasant people to work with who know where they have come from and who they must pay dues to. I've heard so many good anecdotes and fun things other than the pure hardship of filming for godless hours in small rooms with temperatures matching that of heatwaves. And I'm sure the same is true for 4th gen, I just think they're not at a place yet where they're distinctive enough to have that place in variety.

tbh i don't think it's just the kpop industry, i think a lot of people view all arts ent industries with an air of mystery bc nobody teaches anything about them unless you specifically go to school for it or get involved in some way. i met a ton of people doing my masters (did my mfa in contemporary arts but my bfa in theatre) that had no clue what a theatre designer even did, let alone how many people were working behind the scenes, and that was IN an arts field.

and yes yes yes 100% agree about the 'having the ego beaten out of them early' point. about idols yes but also it's the same in theatre, especially on the small scale/fringe level. you work a lot of hours for shitty pay in horrible conditions and if you're an ass about it, good luck getting hired or recommended to a job by any person in that company. being kind, understanding, and respectful will get you everywhere.

and yes about your last point too, it does take time. you need experience to be good on shows and add to that the pandemic and it's put a bit of a damper on the progress for them. also i think i've said this before but i'm not sure than anyone is like. teaching them what they have to do, yanno? not that i think anyone was teaching second gen idols what to do but it was a lot more ruthless and they had to learn pretty quick. there's less stakes now and therefore there isn't as much pressure for fourth gens to develop interesting (for television) personalities. i think in a couple of years some of them might get there though

(this got really long because j have a lot of thoughts on this scene i'm very sorry)

OK so this is going to be more of a garbled mess of Words than anything else because i haven't written the scene yet and my head is buzzing with Thoughts like a million angry bees so coherency is not my strong suit right now

so ingame i know the canon first kiss with julian is in mazelinka's house with the sleepytime soup, but tbh as cute as that scene is it's a bit boring and now that i've developed rowan far beyond the ingame mc, i don't think it really fits them anymore? like don't get me wrong they definitely make out with him anyway but it wouldn't be the first kiss. so i decided to place their first kiss in my beloved iconic garden scene instead!

so at this point in the story, rowan is going Through It. their best (only) friend/sibling figure asra is definitely hiding something important from them, they're under insane time pressure for the investigation, they questioned valerius and valdemar which raised a fuckload more questions about lucio's murder when they already had far too many (and talking to valdy was also just intensely uncomfortable), and they've suddenly found themself with massive, accidental crush on julian, which they are deeply unhappy about for obvious reasons. this is only exacerbated by them meeting up with julian on the aqueduct, because "oh my god he's so hot when he's brooding and i have no clue what the fuck he's talking about"

then to top it all off, they fall in gross plague water, get a chunk ripped out of them by an eel, and almost die? yeah, they're having a Day.

so on top of all the mounting stress they've been going through in the past few days, they now have to deal with the physical and emotional rollercoaster of "OH GOD I'M DYING" > "wait i'm alive HOW THE FUCK AM I ALIVE" > "julian has magic??" > "OH GOD WHAT KIND OF FREAK MAGIC IS THIS OH FUCK NOW JULIAN'S DYING?!" > "oh wait no he's... ok actually? well clearly he is not but he's not gonna bleed out in front of me", over a period of about... five, six minutes? so by the time the two of them actually make it to the garden (they hid there due to rowan's insistence that julian really should not be running in his condition), rowan is just an absolute mess of stressed, overwhelmed, panicking, and confused. they can barely form a coherent sentence.

how does julian deal with this? by continuing to flirt with them like he's been doing for the past few days, of course.

(note that this does not stop rowan from fussing over julian immensely, being really apologetic that he got hurt because of them, and asking him about fifteen times if he's sure he's ok despite his constant reassurances. julian finds this deeply endearing).

the flirting is what breaks rowan. at first he's just more confused ("why are you still hitting on me when i must look like a drowned rat? are you actually interested in me or is this just a really elaborate pisstake?"), but he gets into it pretty quickly. he starts flirting back again. the kicker is when julian offers him the starstrand flower. rowan is a botanist at heart, he knows a lot about and fucking loves all kinds of plants, and especially flowers. this just makes him absolutely melt, especially when julian puts the flower in his hair. this is the turning point where rowan decides "you know what, i don't fucking care that it's a terrible idea, i don't care that it's treasonous, or even that he might have killed a guy, i'm having a challenging week, i desperately need to get laid, and i am going to blow off steam by hooking up with this absolute mess of a man who is unfortunately exactly my type right now"

by this time julian has gotten a lot closer, he's holding their hand and stroking their cheek and continuing to flirt and generally being surprisingly very sweet, and all rowan can think about is how his face is now very close to theirs, and they start to laugh nervously and uncontrollably, as is pretty par for the course with them in these situations because Oh No! Feelings! julian is, again, very endeared by this and starts gently teasing them, like "careful, the guards will hear you"

to which rowan responds with "well, maybe you ought to shut me up, then." basically goading julian into kissing them. and how can julian refuse? basically every flirtatious exchange they've had up until now has been julian baiting rowan and them surprising him by actually stepping up to the plate, he'd be a hypocrite if he didn't allow the tables to be turned.

unfortunately the kiss is short, because the guards show up pretty soon after it starts, but it's no less sweet for it. it starts off gently but julian almost immediately gets clingy because it's julian. rowan is very ok with this. there's a lot of face-caressing and hair-stroking. also a little taste of julian's masochism when rowan not-so-subtly pokes his wound to see if it's still bleeding, and they're not sure if the resulting moan was one of pain or one of horny. frankly they're not sure they want to know. when they have to stop because of the arrival of the guards, they're both extremely irritated about it, but they're sure to make up for lost time in mazelinka's later.

rowan would later realise that they had blood smeared across their mouth the entire time from where they touched their face after trying to stop their bleeding with their hands. cue mortification. julian was surprisingly ok with it.

I do also wonder what even started the beings picking people to make deals with, since rn it seems like Cyan was the first to make a deal, with Red and Magenta following far behind (Red being second and Magenta just slamming accelerate and being third and fourth). Im also expecting someone to mention how Deedee suddenly has colored eyes too, im surprised no one has questioned it yet (probably just haven't had time to ask). Same with Scoob/Bugs, surprised neither has asked the other about it yet, seeing as they are most likely to understand what it means (i dont even think Deedee knows her eyes are different yet tbh, but i could see her connecting the dots and trying to dig deeper and trying to find more answers after noticing)

ALSO ALSO I JUST REALIZE NONE OF THE OTHER BEINGS BESIDES MAGENTA SPEAK ANOTHER LANGUAGE. I say that but we've only seen Cyan speak, but i have a feeling that Magenta only spoke that language specifically for Deedee (for what reason, idk yet actually. Maybe to make her feel special in a "I can only understand you through my unique power" way, or to chain her to her ballyhoo in a "If you lose your ballyhoo, you lose communication to me" way? It could also just be that Magenta CANT speak english for some reason or another.)

Also yeah that's a really good question!! Honestly, this update answered a bunch of questions but also opened SO many more. I do agree that this is one of my biggest questions too tbh, and actually now that you mention it I wonder that too!!!!! I went back to check before responding to this b/c I had the thought that maybe the eye color changes are more for the reader's sake than anything, but no yeah Mick's red eyes are specifically referenced and called out ASDFJKL; so yeah confirmed the eye colors Are happening that way. So yeah now I'm curious why no one has mentioned Dee's eyes yet? I def agree that I don't think she's realized anything has changed about herself yet, but maybe once things calm down a bit someone will ask her about it.

As for Bugs and Scoob... I get the sense that it's very possible they both already know what it means for each other, and that's why they haven't mentioned it. It's very possible they had some conversations during the timeskip about it, or otherwise they just have a sort of understanding. I do definitely want to see if this is talked about further, which I'm assuming it will be now that we're receiving so many more clues. I want to see how these puzzle pieces fit together, dammit!!!

YEAH THAT'S SOMETHING I WAS THINKING ABOUT!!! I think both of your theories definitely have some merit to them (and I think the former is especially interesting, because that implies so much about Magenta as a character), but I also wonder if it's possible that the beings, by default, speak that way, and it's only after you've made a pact with them that you can understand them perfectly. Though that doesn't really explain how and why the pacts are able to be made..... okay I'm gonna have to ruminate on this a bit more.

A Little Notes For the Love of My Life

How’s up there? 

It’s September, 10th 2022. 12 years, 4 months, and 26 days since you left. There’s a lot of things you missed here. But i know you’re watching us up there. 

Again, how’s up there? Did you eat your favorite food? Meeting your forever idol; utha likumahuwa? Did you just vibbin’ with him up there? Did you met god? Whatever you did there, i’m sure you’re doing just fine. You’re surely happier up there, right?

Pap, i’m gonna giving you some recaps about our life down here. I hope i won’t missed some important things. Okay, here we go :

Mom was remarried. I got another little sister who’s 17 years younger than me & i magically loved her so much. I lived with Mama until the end of my SHS then move to Malang to take International Relations’ Degree—please don’t be mad since i can’t be a doctor like you wished for. I’ve been in a relationship with 2 guy all my life. I got my degree after 4 years of struggling with uni’s life and the dramas theeen i got my very first official (and legal) job as a banker. This year, i’m gonna turned 26 and i haven’t married yet. Oh also now, i lived by myself in the middle of nowhere.

Before you get mad, i’m 10000% aware that there’s a lot of things that out of your plans. I’m so sorry Pap. But i can give you some logical reason why i chose this path but it’s gonna take a very long time so i just hope you’ll understand why i chose this way. And even i’m still so far away from making you proud, i hope i don’t disappoint you.

Pap, tbh, it’s really hard to grow up without you. I really don’t know what to do when i was grow up; plus, i got 2 sisters who’s looking up to me. Since Diva also don’t have you, she’ll looking up for me as her guide to be an adult. And i surely don’t have any clue how to be the best adult she can looked up to. Until this day, i’m still figuring out about everything. Sometimes, i asked myself “what would Papa said if i chose this one?”.

Pap, sometimes i really have no idea what to do. There’s so many time i wished i can just disappear or even be with you up there but then i remember that you were not raise a quitter; you shaped me into a survivor.

But still, this is hard.

You know the worstw part of all? the fact that i’m starting to forget you. I started to forget the sound of your voice, the smell of your skin, and even the color of your hair. But the thing is, don’t want to forget you, pap. That’s why i kept all of your photos in my wallet. So when i started to forget your face, i just had to look at you photos; oh, that’s your eyes, that’s your lips, and so on. At some point in my life, i also bought your favorite parfume; so i can remember your signature scent.

Pap, even you’ve been gone, i really wanna say thank you. Thank you for all the lesson. Thank you for all the things you’ve done. I know you have been thru a lot yet you were still be able to raise me after all. You’ve done great, Pap. And i wished you’ve been found your eternal happiness up there. Because you deserve it.

You deserve all the good things life can possibly offer.
