When Mom Tricks Come Handy

This was just like a job interview. You were dressed up in something nice, and you came prepared to show yourself off to your "employer". Of course, this would obviously last much longer than a job interview, but you could just think of it as an extended one. It was just about the same nervousness, the same confidence you had when you applied for a job during your third year of high school.

The moment you entered the room where you met the Queen, most of the confidence hid away somewhere in you and humbleness stepped forward in its place, sitting on top of your feelings of nervousness's lap. You looked down at the marble freshly polished floor, the carefully painted ceiling, the intricately carved patterns on the walls...

"It's a pleasure to see you, Lady (l/n)," her majesty started off. She had entered the room without you knowing, which startled you. Oh gosh, I need to start paying more attention to my surroundings. "Ah, yes, it's quite a pleasure to see you as well, your majesty," you greeted the empress along with a small curtsy. Her majesty always started with light greetings, promptly followed by a short and straightforward talk. You had talked to her a few times before, and she was definitely an intense person. "As you know, if we are on the same page, I have called you here to give you the details of the first test," she started, and you nodded. "I will have you manage the Archon Palace in the North for an entire month. I will visit you every so often, so please be prepared to greet me. You are to be assessed based on your skills in managing the palace both during events and on a daily basis. I have an informant who will inform me of the details. Your test will start when you arrive at the palace and end exactly a month after. That is all."

You quickly thanked the queen and curtsied, then was escorted out of the room by a servant, who led you to your carriage. You were going home to pack your things and get ready for the test. You hopped into the carriage and sighed, thinking about what you were going to do.

The test was like an open notebook test, used to only assess the application of the knowledge studied. You were definitely nervous; you had never done anything on this scale and it was very new to you. Your mother managed all the household affairs for you, since you had quit studying it a long time ago. But you did manage to go over it over the last few months of cramming, and you could probably relate it to some skills you saw at night.

The (y/n) in your dreams had at least basic skills to survive on her own. Of course, she was taught how to cook and clean and make the place all tidy and presentable. Well, you figured you would use those tips later when you managed the castle, so you wrote down a list of what you could remember and placed it with some other important documents you planned on bringing.

You wanted to pack your things yourself. There was just something special about it; perhaps it gave you the right temporary goodbye to your home that you needed. Or maybe you just wanted to do it because that girl always did it herself, but this is what you wanted to do and you were going to do it. It was definitely weird though, in other people's eyes. Anyone of your status would just tell their servants to get the things they needed and get on their way, unless they were hiding something. Well, you guessed you were hiding something, but it wasn't even in the baggage anyways.

You bid your parents a short goodbye as you left for the northern palace, and you slept to the bumps of the road as you made your way there. As soon as you arrived at the palace, you really knew it was really meant to be a long assessment, not some 10-minute pop quiz. The place was a mess- well, it still functioned, but it was still a mess. There was not an ounce of organization to be seen and you instantly wondered who had been in charge of the place before you arrived.

You were escorted to your room; it was actually quite nice. After all, this was a palace. It was made for the royal family, who always lived in such luxury. It was clean enough; the place looked clean and simple, with it just being very clean. That was one thing you liked about this palace, it was clean. There was no dust laying around, no rodents running around, no random stuff sitting around. It was clean and simple, in contrast to the elaborate paintings on the walls and ceilings; you'd have to fix that.

After taking the day to settle in, you familiarized yourself with the place and the staff. You had one of the butlers show you around, taking you to every place on the map you wished to see. It kinda felt like busy work, but it's not like you could back down now. All that cramming was for this, so you were going to do it. You attempted to speak to the staff, have a nice conversation with them, but nobody bothered to answer respectfully. They gave the shortest answers possible and continued working while you were talking to them. Well, they must be dedicated to their job- or perhaps they were told to act this way, who knows.

At the end of the day, the place was still pretty new to you, but it didn't feel completely foreign anymore. You were able to assess the situation, and in the morning, you'd tell them what they needed to fix up on- and it was a lot.

The next morning, you got up as the sun rose and you changed into something you had brought from home. It wasn't too fancy, but still presentable enough for the staff. Honestly, you wanted to wear (your comfort clothes) but you had appearances to keep up. Anyways, after getting ready, you headed towards your new office space. It was pretty nice, you had to say- especially the chair. It was comfier than any of the chairs you had at home, which was awesome. You then wrote out your entire script for what you were going to say to them. You weren't always up for "public speaking", but you were in the mood to get things done, so you were going to get things done. Simple as that.

Then, you decided to set up your simple system. Yes, you were going to make a system for these employees. Having good employees was one thing, but managing them was another. If you have good employees, but no organization, no sense of community, everything's going to be all over the place and nothing will get done. Well, that's what managers are for, right?

You ordered for the things that needed to be brought to be brought and called all of the servants over. You held your short script that you had made earlier this morning and took a deep breath as everyone piled in.

"Good morning, everyone. I have called this meeting to inform you of the new changes, which will start in three days, as I have supplies that need to be sent here. Now, as I was walking around the palace, I noticed many things about organization that need to be addressed immediately. I understand that it is very different than what you have been previously doing, and I hope you understand how this makes the process of doing your work much more manageable and efficient," you started. You looked at the faces of the servants. Some of them were intrigued, others looking away and not caring at all.

"First of all, I would like to address some of the organization issues you have here. Everything is all over the place, so I would like you to organize them. First, keep things in one place. Every time something is used, it is to be put back in the same place when it is finished being used. Next, I would like to invest in making the storage rooms much nicer. I saw them yesterday, and they are horrendous. I have just ordered some baskets; use them to organize the items in the storage rooms. Label them as well, so that everyone knows what basket is for which items. I will have Cain (the butler) handle the baskets," you explained, knowing this seemed pretty new to them. No one was particularly happy, as things were changing to something a bit different, and that was expected. As long as they did their job properly and followed the rules, everything would be fine.

"Next, I would like to introduce a new system. By my office, there will be a large board, where you can sign up for the tasks that need to be done that day. There will not be a set number of tasks you need to complete, but you must all complete everything by the day. I will also assign a leader to each group of servants, who will write me a report every 3 days on the work everyone has been doing. It does not need to be long, but make it a bit detailed; it just helps me make sure everything has been done well." You heard some sighs, and you knew full well it was more work for them, but you couldn't be going around all day and staring at them doing their work.

So, you put the system to work, and when the baskets and things arrived, you looked over everything. Honestly, there wasn't much to do then, if all the reports were all good. Well, that gave you time to plan for the decorations for when the queen would come visit, and so you spent your time doing that.

You researched different popular themes for the palace and selected one you thought her highness might like, though it required the place to be clean. There were way too many items in this palace, for sure. Of course, you could throw away many of them, but that would be such a waste. You could already think of uses for many of them. So, you decided to buy more baskets and hide them in plain sight. That way, you could keep them, and her highness wouldn't have a clue. It wouldn't hurt her if she doesn't know.

∞ ₒ ˚ ° 𐐒𐐚 ° ˚ ₒ ∞

Long days, always. Living in this place was lonely. Sure, there were tons of servants around, but you never felt much of a connection with them. You needed someone you trusted, someone you knew and someone who knew you. The first person you thought of was Kenma, but you weren't allowed to correspond with him during this time. The Queen would think you were trying to cheat, even if she read what was inside the letters. After all, you hadn't tried to prepare for years, and suddenly you're trying when you find out you're the prince's soulmate.

You were just about to go to bed. It was about midnight, a bit late, but not really. You were tired from dealing with all the servants; there was a huge fuss about a maid breaking an expensive vase. All of them in the room pointed fingers at each other, and after listening to everyone's stories, it was so clear that everyone was lying about something. No one's story matched up with the another's, so obviously everyone was twisting it for their own sake. You decided that you didn't like any of the girls in the group and seriously considered just firing the whole lot of them and hiring new ones. Well, in the end, you just let it all go with a warning. All that was really damaged was the vase; that could definitely be replaced. It wasn't like your budget was too tight; actually it was quite good. The only thing that concerned you was their attitude. These people really need to understand that they can be replaced...

It was about 4 in the morning when you woke up. Cain, the head butler, was literally the only one considerate and pleasant enough to talk to, but he really had to wake you up at 4 in the morning. You only had about 4 hours of sleep; your brain was still taking a vacation and it was truly difficult to force it back out.

As you exited your room in your nightgown, as it was still the middle of the night, you saw Alania, one of the better maids, with a candle outside the door. She led you to the office, where Cain was waiting.

"I apologize for interrupting your rest, Lady (l/n), but her highness has arrived. Please get ready to greet her," Cain explained. "I-" you said in surprise. "Thank you for telling me. I shall prepare right away."

Your brain flew back to your brain, luckily, and you were pretty alert now. Your gait quickened, as your thoughts raced through your mind. You ordered for the place to be quickly prettied up; there were still a few things that shouldn't be left in the open, and you told them to hold small things in baskets which were placed as decoration and large things in the storage rooms. It didn't need to be neat; the place just needed to be presentable.

As the place was being fixed up, you had yourself fixed up. It was much harder in the night, but Alania was skilled and made you look presentable in a matter of minutes. Since you were finished before some parts of the palace were cleaned up, you decided to keep her highness in the cleaner parts as the other parts not yet fully fixed up were worked on.

So, you went to greet her highness at the front of the palace and welcomed her. You apologized for being a few minutes late, though that really wasn't too uncommon. Nonetheless, you were just being respectful. You led her to a waiting room, where you talked and had some tea. You wondered when you could go back to getting your sleep, but it's not like you could leave her highness by herself; that would be extremely rude in this society. Casual did not exist, and that was such a shame.

After a while, her highness decided to retire for the night, and you had a room prepared for her. You led her to her room, then once she had closed her door, you started back to your room. It started as a walk, but as the desire to just get back in bed increased, it turned into a faster walk to a run. You sped up the stairs into your room, where Alania had been waiting for you.

You sighed as you slowed down, getting into a chair so that Alania could take off your makeup and accessories for you. They were so fancy you didn't even know how they worked, so you just let her. She got them off in no time and you changed into your pajamas as soon as they were off and flopped onto your bed. You were very tired by this time, and you instantly fell asleep as soon as you got comfortable.

The next morning, you weren't awoken by anyone. You expected someone to inform you that her highness was awake, but you figured she wasn't awake either. She probably didn't get any sleep until she got to the palace, so it made sense.

Alania knocked on your room when she came by a few minutes later, suggesting a dress for you to wear. You had instructed her to get you whatever dress for you to wear for the time you were in this palace, and she was great at it. You changed into the dress and had her fix up your hair and add on some accessories. Once you were all ready to go, you closed your bedroom door and started to the dining hall.

As you sat at the table, you realized it would be rude to eat without her highness, so you decided to wait as you read a novel you had brought with you, just in case you needed it. It would help pass the time, and it could be used as a conversation starter.

After some time, you heard the steps of a pair of heels entering the room, and her highness appeared. You greeted her as she sat across from you, and breakfast was served. You had small talk with her, making sure to always be respectful. Since you were asked, you showed her around the palace and told her some stories of things that you had to take care of. Gossip was always something women in high society talked about, even the Queen herself.

You shuffled around the place, bidding your goodbyes to everyone as you hopped into your ride home. It has been a long month... and it was time to go home. You wondered about your results; they'd be released in a couple of weeks. You stared out the window, falling asleep on your way home.

Hello! I’m sorry if this question is inappropriate but I’ve seen you’ve addressed similar things before and I wanted to check rather than cause offence. I am considering writing for Ballum but I was unsure how to write the two of them speaking in sign language or how to make it clear Ben is lip reading and not listening? I was wondering if you had a suggestion on how to do this appropriately in writing? As surely normal speech marks couldn’t work? Sorry again u don’t have to answer

This question isn't inappropriate at all, you don't need to apologize! I'm totally fine with giving a few tips based off what I know and I commend you for expanding your writing repertoire and trying something new rather than being too scared to touch a Deaf character and trying to pretend he's hearing. Also, warning, I do NOT know BSL (I'm more familiar with ASL) or British Deaf Culture, and I grew up in hearing culture, not American Deaf Culture, so take everything i say with a grain of salt as just the general basics. I STRONGLY suggest doing more research or asking more British Deaf/HOH people about the nuances of their culture cause I sure as hell don't know it.

1. First, lip reading. Most of what you need to know about it can be summed up like this--lip reading is mostly garbage. No Deaf person can catch 100% of what a person is saying just by lip reading (it's been tested and the rate of understanding is actually 40%). The only exception to this might be Deaf people who are specifically TAUGHT how to lip read all their lives by their schools or immediate families instead of learning or adjacent to learning sign language. So unless your character has been specifically instructed about how to lip read, having a Deaf character only lip read through the whole story and understand all of what's happening is completely unrealistic. Your Deaf character MUST be accommodated by their surroundings. Your characters can lip read, sure, but be aware of the constraints. Lip reading in the dark, lip reading with someone with a mustache, lip reading someone who speaks really fast or turns away from you, all these scenarios are different and require you to pay attention to how your character would react in this specific setting.

2. Lip reading is also pretty tiring. If your character knows sign language, even if they use lip reading with strangers to get groceries and all, if the other person they're talking to also knows sign language, they're probably going to sign instead of talk. It's just easier, especially with family close friends. So Ben and Callum should be signing as much as possible between eachother so Ben doesn't have to try and lip read, which, as we established, is garbage.

3. BSL is different from English. I did some light googling and BSL is similar to ASL in that the sentence structure is very different, similar to Hindi. The sentence structure for BSL is time-object-verb-comment, as opposed to English's comment-verb-object-time.

English: Why did I make pancakes yesterday?

BSL: Yesterday pancakes I made why?

So you can't have just direct translations from BSL into the written word without taking into account that it's a DIFFERENT language with different rules and different grammar. Your characters CAN be signing in incorrect BSL, and instead be using an abridged version that jams together English structure with British Sign Language words, which is kinda typical among beginners of sign language who speak English. But this is still hampered by the fact that BSL just doesn't have some words you need if you're thinking in English (for ASL these are words like of, the, or, and, is, etc.) because those are unnecessary or replaced by visual cues in terms of grammar (ASL: turning your shoulders and slightly facing another direction to join to phrases together instead of signing "or"). They could also be signing Signed Exact English, which is the English language in signing form with its own rules, but no one really learns that and it's kinda controversial so stick with BSL. This also explains why people don't really talk what their signing, since it's a hard balance between 2 different languages.

4. So basically you're being asked to translate another language into English, like French. How would you do that? I would propose just put the phrase in italics and say signed instead of said as the speaker's tag:

English: "Bobby likes tall buildings," she said.

BSL translated: Bobby likes tall buildings, she signed.

This way you don't have to worry about the sentence structure or confusing your reader with a bunch of phrases in incorrect English grammar but correct BSL grammar. I would also use this if someone was speaking Russian or Spanish or any other foreign language to make it clear they're not speaking English.

5. Deaf people need translations sometimes. It happens. If multiple people are talking in English, a person who knows BSL sometimes acts as an interpreter and signs the conversation while it's happening. Also, if there is a group of people and a person DOES know sign language, it is pretty rude to not use it when a Deaf person is also part of the conversation. Callum shouldn't just be talking when there's a conversation he and Ben are involved with, since it's super isolating to try and understand the conversation when a bunch of people are talking instead of signing. Considering Callum should know the most BSL out of anyone in Ben's circle bc Ben spends a lot of time communicating with him (more practice) and they're learning together, he would probably take the role as an interpreter if Ben needs it. Considering Ben knows English pretty well, Callum probably shouldn't have to say what Ben is signing, as Ben would just say it. Having interpreters are important and should be utilized in your writing.

TL;DR: Lip reading is HARD™ and sign should be used when possible, put sign language in italics with the speaker tag "signed", and have an interpreter when possible.

Neil?The panic ebbs, notbanished but content to wait. This is Matt. Matt is safe, warm, giving. Hemight have answers Neil doesn’t, but even if he doesn’t, he’ll help Neil findthem. Neil unclenches his aching fingers and rests them on his knees.

“Do you?” he asks.

Relief breaks across Matt’s face. Neil knows Matt hasn’t heard him over thereassurance of him speaking again, so he repeats himself. The pencil lines ofMatt’s expression rearrange themselves. Thoughtful; holding back. Internally,Neil shakes his head. The most neutral faceMatt is able to make is a beaming grin.

“Do I want to….” Matt’s lips close in the shape of a kiss. He touches the backof his hand to them, and then blinks and looks away, embarrassed at thegesture. Neil’s not sure why. “Uh. I mean if you’re down?”

His voice cracks. Matt jerks a hand up to cover the bottom of his face. Neiltilts his head. He’s never seen Matt be shy.

It’s fascinating.

“Sorry,” Matt says, muffled by his hand. “Never—actually.”

“You cut out for a second,” Neil says, and Matt swears. He sounds more likehimself as he lowers his hand to try again.

“I just said, I never thought this would happen.”

Neil frowns. “You thought about it?”

“Dude,” Matt groans. He flops back onthe pillows, tipping his image back and forth. Neil’s glad he doesn’t getseasick. “I might have been thinking about it for a while.”

His face is hidden by his pillow and the angle of his chin. Neil doesn’t thinkit’s an accident. “Why?”

Matt’s eyes appear as he cranes his neck. He’s got his t-shirt pulled up overhis nose. Neil misses the sight of his mouth until he notices that Matt’s bellybutton is now exposed. It’s a sight Neil has seen more times than he’d honestlylike to, but this new feeling welling up inside of him urges him to stare. Theskin there looks smooth, a patch of tiny curls meandering down into Matt’swaistband. Neil wonders what it would feel like, to touch. Would the musclesjump if he tickled? What if he scratched, lightly like he does to Matt’s head?

“Hey.” Matt’s voice is gentle. He comes out of his shirt, friction working onNeil’s side for once in his life and keeping it rucked up. “Do you want this tochange anything? It doesn’t have to.”

Neil nods, firm. Of this he’s sure. He wouldn’t have said anything if he didn’t want his words to have an effect. He’s too good at hiding forthat. Unfortunately, that’s where the sureness stops; Neil doesn’t know whatkind of change he wants to happen, just that he wants something. And hopefullyit can involve kissing, but that isn’t necessary. He stares at Matt through thecamera helplessly, wishing he could pierce the miles between them and lean againstMatt’s strong chest, rest in the knowledge of Matt’s breathing and that thingsare, for the next few hours at least, going to be all right.

“How about…um. Can I take you on a date?” Matt bites his lip and then smiles,boyish exuberance trickling back into his frame. He sits up against theheadboard and takes the laptop with him, gesturing with his free hand. “When Ifirst got signed Dan and I used to do these video dates. I’d still like to takeyou out for real, but it’s not that far off from the real thing, we can dressup and everything…” he sees how Neil’s not moving and with visible effort calmsdown. “If you want that. We can do something else.”

“I’d like it. The date,” Neil says, feeling a bit topsy-turvy himself. He’sonly vaguely sure what people do, on dates; he and Andrew don’t tend towardsthat sort of thing, or if they do, it’s more one of them dragging the othersomewhere and them insulting each other and seeing how soon they can get the maître-d(or cinema worker, or park concert usher) to kick them out. Neil has never regrettedthe lack of traditional romancing. It’s a pointless ritual when he and Andreware already wrapped past each other’s deepest twistings. But with Matt….

Matt is so excited, and Neil feels himself pulled along. A small spark ofanticipation pricks under his breastbone. “We can try it.”

“Great!” Matt beams at Neil, and Neil finds himself blushing. Starting to workout why Matt’s smile is affecting him differently now hasn’t dampened thereaction. If anything, it’s made it stronger. “Now where’s my little boy?”

Neil recognizes the distraction tactic for what it is, and is grateful for it.There have been too many feelings for today. He relates the story of the newkitten’s latest exploits to Matt’s rapt attention, which runs right into Mattsharing the story of the puppy he saw on the way to the gym this morning, andthey exchange subjects until Neil gives a cracking yawn and Matt demands thathe go to sleep.

“No,” Neil says, to be contrary.

“What if it will make me feel betterif you go to bed?”

“Guess you’ll never find out.”

Israfil paces warily around theedge of the room, keeping as close to the sleek black walls as he can managewithout touching anything. He had expected Hell to be fiery and cluttered andthoroughly unpleasant. He supposes the rest of it may very well be like thatfor all he knows, but this room looks like a fancy corporate office occupied bya very goth businessman. The desk at the center of the room looks to be pureobsidian, polished and shining beneath the stark white ceiling lights. Theblack chair accompanying the desk is plush with dark green accents and wheelson the bottom. Israfil never saw a wheeled chair during his time in Heaven. Hewonders if there’s any significance to that.

He’s in the middle ofsurreptitiously examining the ornately framed painting of a woman that hangsbehind the desk when the front door swings open with a whoosh of hot air.“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Lucifer says smoothly, strolling into the office. Heis dressed in a well tailored crimson suit and a wide brimmed hat, which he promptlytosses onto the desk. “How’s tricks?” he asks, pulling the wheeled chair backand taking a seat.

“Oh, you know,” Israfil says. “Beenbusy.”

“I can tell.” He reaches into oneof the many drawers in his desk, removing a small, silver box. “Cigarette?” heoffers.

“No. Thanks.” He clears his throat.“Listen, I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner. I was sort of caught up with…something.”

“Israfil,” Lucifer says, taking acigarette out of the box and lighting it with the tip of his finger, “believeme, I know all about your exploits in humanity.” He gives Israfil aknowing look. “You should know by now that no one has any secrets from me.”

“Right. That’s true. Anyway—”

“It’s a shame what happened,” heinterrupts, wisps of smoke curling out of his mouth as he speaks. “But I guesshumans aren’t really made to last. Not like us.” He grins, looking for a momentlike his old, charming self. “We’re like the cockroaches of this whole wretcheduniverse.”

“Right,” he repeats, softer thistime. “Look, Lucifer—”

“You know, I remember when youfell,” he continues, gesturing for Israfil to sit in one of the green armchairsacross from the desk. “It was quite scandalous, really. God’s golden boygetting cast aside without warning.” He leans forward slightly, as if preparingto tell him a secret. “You know, my wife and I took bets on whether it wouldstart another uprising in Heaven. From what Michael told me, a lot of theangels were not happy with that little turn of events.”

Israfil didn’t know that Luciferand Michael still kept in touch. Though, he supposes it makes sense. After all,Michael was the only one who was ever really close with Lucifer. “You’remarried?” he asks.

Lucifer waves a hand at thepainting Israfil had been inspecting. It depicts a tall, dark skinned womanwith tumbling black curls and blood red lips. She sits cross legged upon agolden throne, a jackal lying peacefully at her feet. “Lilith,” he says fondly.“You might remember her from the garden?”

Israfil nods slowly, eyes fixed onthe painting. “Vaguely.” He remembers that Adam had a wife before Eve, and thatshe, too, had been dismissed from the garden. Apparently Lilith and Adam had a…difference of opinion regarding the woman’s place in a relationship. “Youmarried her?”

“How could I not?” He turnshis chair to face the portrait with a soft sigh. “I knew she was brilliant themoment I met her. And she’s got a body that just won’t quit.”

“Okay, anyway,” Israfil saysabruptly, feeling more than a little uncomfortable at the turn thisconversation is taking. “I was wondering—”

“I wanted to claim you right afteryou fell, but your grace hadn’t burned off yet,” Lucifer says, seemingly intenton telling this story whether Israfil likes it or not. “Besides, it was way toointeresting to watch you play house with the human, and I thought it mightthrow a wrench into my entertainment if I took you under my wing too early.” Hepauses, swiveling around in his chair once more and tapping a bit of ash offthe end of the cigarette onto the table. “I’ll admit, I was a bit disappointedwhen you didn’t come to call after I adopted you,” he murmurs, looking upthrough his eyelashes at Israfil. “Some demons less benevolent than I mighthave perceived that as a snub, you know.”

“Like I said, I was busy.”

“Of course. You were busy.” Hetakes a long tug on the cigarette, looking thoughtfully at the ceiling aboveIsrafil’s head. “One of my seers came to me with a vision. On the eve of yourfirst little scuffle with Raphael.” He blows a perfectly rounded smoke ring. “Sheprophesied that you were going to fall in combat.” He chuckles to himself. “Outsideof an IHOP, no less. If I hadn’t stepped in, that would’ve been super embarrassingfor you. And you have far too much potential to let you get taken out in aparking lot brawl, of all things.”

Ah. So that explains why he hadbeen claimed during that fight all those years ago. He had always had thesneaking suspicion that Lucifer knew something he didn’t—which, granted, wastrue most of the time—that led him to choose that moment to claimIsrafil as one of his own. It had always seemed a little too apropos to be a coincidence.“I appreciate your intervention,” he says curtly.

Lucifer nods slowly. “It really wasa beautiful sight,” he murmurs. “Watching as you rose to me like ash, blackenedand new, with the full force of Hell at your fingertips.” He exhales softly,his eyes fluttering closed. “I was proud to see you triumph like that, rebornwith my dark blessing.”

Israfil resists the urge to scoffat the utterance of ‘dark blessing’. Lucifer must think himself quite the poet.“It was a welcomed gift,” he admits. “Your patronage, I mean.”

“Hm.” He stubs out the cigarette onthe back of his hand. The flesh sizzles and blisters before returning to itsusual, eerily smooth texture. “And now you’re here.”

“Now I’m here.”

“I suppose you’re wondering whattask I’m going to ask you to perform,” he says casually, popping the cigarettebutt into his mouth and swallowing it. “To prove your loyalty to me, naturally.”

Israfil nods, relieved to befinally getting to the point of this whole meeting. “I don’t intend to residehere,” he says carefully, “but I’m willing to carry out my… duties, as the needarises.”

Lucifer smiles, lips pulling backto reveal a mouth of glossy white teeth. “Good,” he says. “Your service isinvaluable to me.” He runs his palm over his slick, dark hair, eyeing Israfil withgreat consideration. “You’re currently living in Oakland, correct?”

“Correct.”

“Good,” he repeats. “In downtownOakland there is a restaurant owned by a man who has a band that I don’t like.Have the restaurant shut down for me.”

Israfil blinks. “Is that all?”

“That’s all.” There is a devilishgleam in his eyes, but he offers no elaboration and Israfil doesn’t feel quitebold enough to ask, so he says nothing and simply nods his head in agreement. “There’sa good lad,” Lucifer says brightly. “Now, I have a very important meeting witha few of my generals, so I’m afraid I’ll have to send you on your way.” Hewaves his hand at the tall double doors at the other end of the office and theyswing open, revealing a broad shouldered, burly demon standing just beyondthem. “Halphas will show you out.”

The demon bows low at the mentionof her name.

“Right. Okay. Well, I’ll be… seeingyou, I guess.” Israfil gives an awkward half bow to Lucifer, feeling a bitstrange at having to bow to someone who was once his delinquent cousin, andshuffles out of the room. He has a gnawing sensation in the pit of his stomachthat tells him he should’ve given more thought to the implications of Lucifer’srequest. He knows better than to believe that the order is as innocuous as itseems. But even the unforeseen consequences of shutting down a singlerestaurant are probably preferable to any of the things Lucifer might haveasked a demon he liked less.

Even so, as Israfil follows Halphasdown the wide halls of Hell, something in the back of his mind tells him heshouldn’t have been so quick to agree.

Unsustainable - (7/9)

Summary: An accident happened in which the reader has gotten powers. The reader is struggling to adjust to his new powers but also to keep them secret from Peter as they become closer.

Pairings: Peter Parker x Male Reader

Saturday morning. For what it's worth the friction from last night seemed out the air. Breakfast like a small little family, some small talk. Nothing special. But you can't help but notice Peter is happier, more content with himself. He's smiling more than often. You've always enjoyed his company, sometimes a bit too much. Is he running against the same barrier then you? Who's going to take the first step? Should you? The question keeps circling through your head. Overthinking every sentence like always. What could you have said differently? Would that have cracked the ice? After a gaming session on the console, you both decide to look for some new tinker parts. Scavenge some local alleyways, but first, check out the dump store. May was soon going out shopping, so a tagging along the ride wasn't a problem.

Arriving at the dump store, a list of items in hand and dollars in your pocket. Before entering you continue discussing the items on the list. Peter isn't someone who gets mad or annoyed if he didn't get his way. If you reasoned well enough, he'd let you take the lead. You, on the other hand, could get a bit grumpy for not getting your way. Not your best quality. A couple minutes go by, as you go over the most important items for now. Setting the priorities straight, you both enter. You both start digging through the boxes. Chatting up with the owner, Henry, you always got dibs on the new stuff and the usual discount. Behind the fence in the alleyway was his new stock, handing the key to Peter you continue talking with Henry. As a former electrician, you enjoyed his tips and tricks. Now old and retired, he runs one of the busier dump stores around the block. He gave you the old soldering station which it all started with. Sorting through the boxes, you gather some necessary parts and scrap when your eyes catch sight of the Raven. That feeling in the back of your head, that itch. Now familiar to you. "…Peter's in trouble…" Without glancing in its direction. You walk past the counter, pushing the parts onto the counter pacing quickly outside. "One moment." Turning straight into the alleyway you hear muffled sounds in the distance. Moving on your toes, you skid past the stone wall. The sound becoming clearer. "Who did it Parker!?"

Halfway the alleyway opened up into a large square area. Beside the fenced off storage part from Henry's shop and some fuse boxes and air cons, it was like any other alleyway. Trash littered around the garbage bins and containers as the smell of decaying food and cat litter and piss stenches the area. Approaching the fence, you peek around the corner. In the pile of cardboard boxes lay Peter, his right eye socket swollen red. Towering over him stood Flash, beside him two of his friends. "I-I.. don’t know Flash! I-" Before Peter could say anything more Flash's foot connected right into Peter's stomach. Peter hunches back as he coughs and puffs, curling up on his side, afraid of more hits. Without a second thought, or weighing your options you walk right through the gate. Filled with anger and rage, you don't even try to hide your approach. The adrenaline pumping through your system. You barely notice your shaking hands. Now more than ever could you finally give Flash the beating he deserved. Doing that on school gets you in trouble. Now it was your turn. The last few steps towards him attracted attention from his buddies beside him. Retracting your balled up fist, knuckles white. Ready to bring it home. With one hand on Flash's shoulder and a firm pull, you turn him towards you. Losing his balance, tumbling back on one foot. "Y-…" Is the only response he's able to get out. With every muscle in your arm tensed to the max, you put every bit of force and weight into your hit. Lighting fast, your knuckles strike directly on the bridge of his nose. At least that's how it looked to you. Flash dropping straight to the floor. His hands clamped on his nose, screams of pain and anguish filled the alleyway. Between the screams of Flash and the stinging pain in your knuckles, his buddies got onto you. The bruised skin on your knuckles slowly bled as your fingers hurt from the impact. Maybe you didn't hit him at the right angle. A sudden force hits the side of your jaw. Followed by a blow to your knee, forcing you to the ground.

You didn't see it coming. Your vision blurry, everything doubled. You struggle to get back on your feet, stumbling backward against the fence. Hanging against the fence, you see the vague contours of a figure speeding towards you. Seeing an object above him, you prepare for the impact. As soon as it hits, you charge forward, grabbing his torso and smashing him into a container. In a quick reflex, you step aside, his buddy hunched from the impact. Both hands on his back, you drive your knee deep into his stomach. A final moan sends him to the ground. The last one not taking its chances runs out. "You ok?" Peter's eyes are wide open as he nods while scrambling back up. Seeing Peter's good, you turn your attention to Flash. "F-Fu-u…" His body shudders as you approach. "I'm not done with you yet. You little fu-" You threaten. Dashing onto him, your anger getting the best of you. Punch after punch hit him in the face. Your fingers and knuckles starting to hurt, more blood gradually seep from your hands. His hands desperately trying to block your blows. Two hands pull you off him. "Enough! Let's go!" Falling on your side, you feel yourself being dragged away across the floor. Still managing the get a kick into Flash's side. Peter's arms wrap around your chest, struggling to get you back on your feet. "We should go…" Peter concludes, looking around worried.

Getting back up on your feet, you smack right back into the fence. Sending a lot of noise through the alleyway. Peter darts to your side seeing you struggle. Your left leg hurts, you can hardly stand on it. Let alone walk. The blow to your knee must have bruised something. Clamping your arm around his neck, unwillingly you let all your weight rest upon him. Slowly you limp out of the alleyway. "Henry!" You call out. Pedestrians passing by glance at the both of you with worrying faces, limping out the alleyway like soldiers returning from the frontline. Seconds later Henry appears. "What the hell-“ The older man mummers through his lips. “I’m sorry for-“ You manage to get out. “We are…” Only to be corrected by Peter. You glance at Peter for a second, his cheeks bright red, panting heavily. “-sorry for the mess. Some lads from school were waiting for Peter. Got a bit rough.” You could see the doubt in Henry’s eyes. Thinking about what he was gonna say. “Get in. I’ll call you guys a cab.” Limping past him, the silence in the alleyway was disturbed by wailing in the distance. “I see you got them good.” Turning around you see three figures storming out the other end. “Lesson learned.”

“Nosebleeds are kinda your thing now eh…” Peter remarks with a quirky smile. Small red circles paint the stairs as your limp up towards the front door. You feel the warm blood stream through your nostril and fall down onto the stairs. “May!” A slight tremble sounded in Peter’s voice. It doesn’t take long before the door get swung open. “Guys! Wha-“ Before May could sound her worries Peter had already interrupted her. "(Y/N) beat Flash and his friends up. He got them good. They waited for me in the alleyway near the dump store." May didn't say anything for a moment, assessing the situation in front of her. "You're my hero (Y/N)." Helping you in with a content look on her face. Although May was a person, who disapproved violence, after an honest explanation she saw justice in your actions. Glad that Peter was ok. Glad you were there this time around. The fight was also a relief for yourself. Finally, that bottled up fury let loose. The grudge against Flash fulfilled. Pulling comfort from the thought Peter wouldn't get hit on again by Flash and his friends for some time made you and May happy. May wouldn't let you go home. Insisting you would stay and rest here. The knee itself was red and swollen. Moving it felt sore on the muscles but not that painful. Depending on how the leg was tomorrow May would drive you to the hospital if necessary. May thought though it would be for the best if dad at least knew. She tried to call dad, but the voicemail as usual. The rest of the day was spent on the couch. Completely stretched onto the couch, like you own the place. And no space left on the couch, Peter decides to rest on the floor. Right in front of you. You can't deny that it was somewhat challenging to keep your focus on the movie. Together with pizza, drinks, and movies, it was the perfect night. May even got beers for the occasion, she herself going out for the night. Not too much though she pressed. A promise easy to keep. But drinking just two was enough to become slightly tipsy and giggly. Playing with Peter's hair, pushing the cold beer into his neck. The usual pestering. Peter himself also being tipsy started playing along. And the inevitable while drinking. Taking a piss. Everyone has to after a beer. After the first one, there is no stopping it. Every five minutes, you gotta go. But with Peter supporting you limping to the toilet, and being tipsy was an adventure on its own. The door being just meters away, Peter kept forcing you the other way. You had no other way then obey and follow. Limping across the room, laughing and singing. Deliberately pushing your weight on his shoulder, making him pay for his joking around.

Sunday morning. Slowly waking up you hear faint sounds coming from the kitchen. You slowly open your eyes and are surprised at the brightness. By this time of day, the curtains didn't hold back much light. You assume it's already later in the morning. You eyelids still feeling heavy, you sway back onto your side. Letting your eyes adjust to the light. Your eyes being drawn to the door, as it slowly opens. Your sleepy eyes make out the contours of Peter's face peeking around. "You awake?" You shake your head in denial. "Barely…" Rubbing your eyes with the palm of your hand. "Breakfast is ready."

"Gimme a minute." You groan and moan while stretching every inch of your body. Peter still watching you from the door. You move towards the edge of the bed, pushing the blankets aside. Sitting on the edge, legs dangling. The knee feeling a bit stiff but surprisingly better compared to yesterday. You feel a small summer breeze coming from the window, gently blowing past your legs and back. You give yourself some time, regaining your bearings. "Right…" Scaling the stairs of the bunk bed, you're eyes catch sight of Peter's bedsheets. His dark blue sheets pushed to one side, revealed a white duvet cover. His shorts thrown in there, phone with buds on top. [ 9:36 ] revealed the screen. But the screensaver caught you off guard. One of the selfies you took just before going on holiday. One of many that day. Do all friends this? Overthinking once again. Shaking the thoughts from your mind. You continue.

Peter had disappeared behind the wooden door. Grabbing one of his oversized shirts you follow him into the living room, the smell of freshly baked croissants teasing your nose. Looking through the living room stood Peter, dressed in T-shirt with a chef's apron dangling from his neck. A towel thrown over one shoulder, the other supported by May's hand. "Good morning sunshine!" The dinner table dressed by a red and white tablecloth, colorful cups and plates sitting on top. "Good morning, you've been busy." You voice sounding a bit raspy. "Breakfast worthy of a hero like yourself." May replied. You can't help but smile at the sight of such a breakfast. They really put effort into it. Everything you can think of to start the day perfectly are there. And somehow the things you like are there. Including Peter. Pieces of fruit, cup of tea and warm croissant. Did you mention that to Peter sometime? Fresh from the oven croissants barely touch the plates as the three of you quietly enjoy the breakfast. "Compliments to the chef." You add, eyeing Peter in process. Sitting across Peter, you can't help notice the smile running across his face.

The Seven Sins of Fanfiction

Hey all,

This blog is primarily focused on helping newer writers (and maybe some older ones) improve their fanfiction and increase their views. Since that’s the case, it’s important to understand exactly what not to do when you’re writing.

These are the worst things you can do while you’re writing. I can guarantee everyone reading this post has done at least three of them, and probably all in some shape of form. This is the sort of thing that makes you want to click away immediately, that you cringe at when it’s in the first paragraph or laugh at how bad it is. These things that make you stop reading other stories, just think about it for a moment. What if fewer people are reading your own work because you’re making the same mistakes?

Yeah. If you want to improve, you gotta know what you’re doing wrong. Number Seven is the least worst, then the list descends to Number One, the worst thing you can do in fanfiction.

Note: This is a subjective list. There are people who disagree with some of these points (especially the non-grammar ones), so it’s important to remember that these are the things I find most degrading to the quality of the story being written. As a writer, you have the creative liberty to write whatever you want.

#7 – Bad Romance

“Wo-o-o-o-o, o-o-o-o, o-o-ah, caught in a bad romance fanfiction but it’s the only 100k fic for my OTP so I’m like contractually obligated to read it.” - Lady Gaga, mostly

We’ve all been here. You know that moment when two characters meet, then suddenly decide to kiss, and the next thing you know they’re screwing on the patio with some kinky ass BDSM shit. What about those cringe fics where suddenly Harry is spouting some creepy possessive stuff like “my only” or “softest light of my life” to twelve year old Ginny. You know what I’m talking about.

Good romance is an art. It’s about flawed characters (later) coming together in a beautifully intimate way (later) to make something even more beautiful. There is so much bad romance on FFN and AO3 that it just blows my mind.

#6 – Bad Dialogue Tags

“No!” he howled.

“Yes,” she growled angrily.

She retorted snarkily, “Well, screw you.”

“Fuck you too,” he scowled sadly, before gratingly mumbling “I still love you though.”

Alternatively:

“No!” “Yes.” “Well, screw you.” “Fuck you too. I still love you though.”

There’s a glorious word in this social construct we call English, and it’s “said.” Use it.

You don’t need a fancy word for every tag. You don’t need a fancy word for almost all tags. Eighty percent of your tags should be said, exclaimed, and asked, and more of said than the others. Maybe a whispered or a yelled for some flavor.

Adverbs are your enemies. I struggle with this, but you should use them extremely sparingly.

On the flipside, if your reader doesn’t know who’s talking, your dialogue is meaningless to them. Also, use line breaks every time there is a new speaker.

The trick is finding some happy medium between the two examples. A handful of fancy tags, a lot of said, and if there are two people talking back and forth you don’t even need to tag every sentence.

#5 – Bad Messaging

I don’t want to put down an example for this one, because I think writers feel liberated to write some really awful shit in fanfiction because it’s “not a serious medium” or “it’s the internet, I have free speech.” Let me say this right now:

Stories that make rape a positive thing are not okay. Stories that portray suicide in a glorified light are not okay. Stories that show slavery, or torture, or all of the other horrendous things human beings do to each other in a romanticized or glorified manner are not okay.

I don’t care if it’s your fetish. I don’t care, it’s just not okay to write about these things in a positive light. The only reason this is so high on this list is because these stories aren’t as common as the rest, and are mostly marked M/Explicit so you can avoid them.

#4 – Overdescription

Hi my name is Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way and I have long ebony black hair (that’s how I got my name) with purple streaks and red tips that reaches my mid-back and icy blue eyes like limpid tears and a lot of people tell me I look like Amy Lee (AN: if u don’t know who she is get da hell out of here!). [[I’m not related to Gerard Way but I wish I was because he’s a major fucking hottie. I’m a vampire but my teeth are straight and white. I have pale white skin. I’m also a witch, and I go to a magic school called Hogwarts in England where I’m in the seventh year (I’m seventeen). I’m a goth (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly black. I love Hot Topic and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black corset with matching lace around it and a black leather miniskirt, pink fishnets and black combat boots. I was wearing black lipstick, white foundation, black eyeliner and red eye shadow – My Immortal

Oh boy.

Writers, let me introduce you to this wonderful thing called your profile. Assuming you aren’t drowning in copypastas, this is the perfect place for your character descriptions. Alternatively, have you heard of Tumblr? Literally, stick them anywhere except the middle of your story, and I can guarantee you the readers that actually care will find them if you mention them in your A/N.

Show, don’t tell is one of the fundamental principles of writing. When you’re describing a character, you probably don’t need more than three adjectives and a one sentence description of their outfit. Yes, that applies even if your character has a special non canon outfit. If we must know, work the details into the story. Info-dumping description is telling, and is one of the worst world building and characterization mistakes you can make. Period.

#3 – Epithets

The blond girl walked to the door, and started as a burly man opened it. “May I help you?”

“Yes, I’m here to get a consultation,” the graying businessman said as he ran a hand through his oily hair.

The youthful therapist nodded as she shut the door behind him. Rummaging on her desk, she asked, “Why are you here?”

“Well,” said the jaded economist to the buxom woman. “This author thinks they’re being clever by not giving out names, but they’re ruining this story.”

The best way to get someone to leave your story is epithets.

Epithets do not create mystery. Epithets are not a good substitute for proper nouns. Epithets will not make a clever opening, or add variety to your dialogue.

Epithets will ruin your story, and should not be used.

They come in varying degrees of horror.

The noun. You might be able to get away with saying just “the woman” or “the child” under certain circumstances. This is almost an excusable offence.

The noun with one adjective. This is already unacceptable. If you though you were going to solve Sin #4 by doing this, you’re digging yourself an even deeper hole.

The noun with one modified adjective. Because they can’t just be sexy, they have to be shockingly sexy.

The noun with multiple adjectives. This is automatically overdescription on top of being a horrible thing to subject another person to.

The noun followed by a relative clause. Because there’s always a way to make it worse. “The girl who was now holding his hand” is absolutely disgusting, and so is “The girl that was sitting across from her” or especially “the girl she knew had a chocolate bar somewhere in her pocket.

The noun followed by a relative clause with adjectives. Put it together and what have you got?

Compound Epithets. Oh. My. God. This deserves its own sin. Even if your character has blue hair, you should never ever ever call them a bluenette. Ever. Ever ever ever. AAAAAAAAH!

The author has made her point.

#2 – Bad Grammar

I find bad grammar extremely agitating, mostly because there are a lot of great tools and easy fixes to solve the problems. Most word processors have a built in spell checker, and a lot of them check for grammar as well. If you need an alternative, grammarly.com has a good free version that’ll catch a lot of mistakes. Of course, proofreading your work before posting is always a great idea. Here’s a quick list of some of the most common grammar issues you should be on the lookout for:

A new paragraph for a new idea.

A new paragraph for a new speaker.

Dialogue formatting

Periods

Commas

Run on sentences

Using line breaks

Spelling

Capitalizing starts of sentences

Capitalizing proper nouns

Choosing CONSISTENT capitalization for canon terms (Pokemon vs pokemon, for example)

Repeated words.

Sentence fragments

Tense

#1 – Bad Characterization

“What?” you’re probably asking yourself right now. “How is bad characterization possibly worse than poor grammar? Than epithets?”

Allow me to explain.

When an author writes a story, a good story, they are creating characters who act like people. They have wants, needs, hates, motives, and a concept of who they are, even if they’re only fictional. The author gives them life, spirit, a spark that keeps you reading and wanting to learn more about them.

That sense of identity is what makes them real to us. Why you binge a show on Netflix, or read a novel in one night. Reading is a connection with these characters on a deeper level than you might realize, and this connection brings them to life.

Take that away, and your story is dead.

Your gray OOC Gary Stu overpowered Ravenclaw Harry who grew up with Snape and has a goblin half brother AU is not a story about Harry Potter. It’s a story about an OC named Harry Potter, and Harry loses any integrity he had as a character in Rowling’s books.

That’s why there are fics with horrible grammar and massive following, alongside fics with incredible grammar and sentence construction but no followings. Unless you maintain a basic level of your character’s identity, the essence of what makes them empathetic, you’re not writing about that character. This is the worst sin, because even with all of the others in play, if there is good characterization you can still create an incredible story.

Just by fixing these seven problems, your fic can instantly jump from bad/meh to incredible in the way people perceive it. Hopefully this list can help you determine things to either go back and revise or work on for future chapters. When have you committed one of the seven sins? Hiii anonn! 🙈🙊 thanks for the ask even though I havent posted in a while 😭 (schoooooolllll) . Anyway, tips for angst hmmm.1. Reading your work should make you feel something. This does not only apply for angst but all genre. Fluff should make u feel warm or giddy or swoon. Angst should hurt or at least prick, and even you, the writer should feel it. Often, being the author of something desensitizes you to feeling things from your story because it's you who has developed it and you know everything about it. Being the writer is a different perspective from being a reader, and letting the writer feel something from his own work is hard. I don't know if it's just me but I had works where the story I wrote was sad but I didnt feel anything from it. Although the readers felt something while i didnt, that's a gamble. Basically, if even you the author could feel something from your own work that is a greater security that it will hurt others. 2. DEVELOP YOUR PLOT. take time to think of the course of events, BUILD IT UP. Dont just pour so much angst on one part of the story, slowly establish it and with a big push let all the sadness connect lol. This is why when Im doing back stories or flashbacks in my fic, even though they're like just one big life story of a character or one event, I make sure to spread the revelations or developments throughout the story. One, it keeps the readers interested. Two, it doesnt emotionally exhaust you. ESTABLISH FACTS FROM THE GET GO OF THE STORY while omitting / leaving a few bits of the whole story from the readers. Establishing facts makes the readers know what they're in for. For example, in my downpour fic, I immediately revealed that Jihoon had Hanahaki and recovered from it through operation. But. What i didnt reveal was the course of the years after he recovered or how he even managed to acquire one.Another example would be for B.A.M where from the very first scene, you know something was wrong with the lead girl (Riseul) because who even cries during a pop rock song, but the reader doesnt know why dafuq she was crying. (This is me shamelessly advertising my fics 😂😂). So establishing facts serve as bait ? And at the same time it makes a good foundation. 3. CHARACTERIZATION IS KEY. Just a fun fact why I try to avoid writing some characters in my stories (coughs Sungwoon and Guanlin), it's because I find a hard time visualizing them fully (i love them but i dont want to not fully bring out their charms) Every member of w1 has a certain stereotype (this is a wrong term but my brain is kind of not in the mood to work with me ) or personality tag? For example, jaehwan is the funny weird guy ; baejin is the shy guy , daehwi is sweet and cute , jihoon is jeojang lollll. BUT. That shouldnt be the case all the time. The members are real humans so they should be more than just a shy guy or funny weird guy all throughout. I mean, true, that should be incorporated in the story but it shouldnt the totality of it. You must be able to feel how they would act in certain situations, what they would say or what they feel or how their personality tags would affect their decisions. PROPER CHARACTERIZATION makes the story closer to people and therefore more hurtful since the readers could empathize that "oh, i really think that this is what Jihoon would have done or this is what Daniel would have felt" 4. CONVEY THE EMOTIONS. Honestly, I'm a very emotions-type of writer. Like I write so much of what the character is feeling and im trying to describe it in detail basically i try to describe the abstract concepts in detail. Actually, that's a bad habit and I must grow out of writing so much about emotions because stories should be a mix of ACTION WRITING AND EMOTION WRITING. Action writing would refer to describing movements like "she sipped from the cup" . Emotion writing would refer to the abstract concepts , usually the emotions " she was angry because of ___" . readers wouldnt know the emotions of the characters just by reading their actions, so it's your job as a writer to convey the emotions. This is specially important for angst. For example, you may describe in detail (action-based) how the lead could have caught her boyfriend cheating, but not all readers would understand the feeling of being cheated upon so u need to point out how she would have felt. While emotions are important, dont forget to fill up the action writing too ( which I suck at btw) . True, it's nice to know how they are feeling but without any information on the whole scene like what they were doing or such, the readers wouldnt be able to imagine it and would not be able to connect to them. 5. Angst should be more than just dumping of bad occurences happening to a character. It's more than just love not being returned, or cheating or death. I mean, those are premises, but it's not fully angst. I think an angst is good if you are able to show the dilemmas between each character and these dilemmas should be realistic. I remember how I was so frustrated when I was writing Downpour because of the dilemma of Riseul where her best friend ( Jihoon ) had fallen in love with her to the point he had Hanahaki but this happened while she was dating Woojin which means she really had no feelings for Jihoon. It's one thing to want to save your best friend, but it's another if it means that you must fall out of love with your boyfriend or else you'll throw away the emotions of your best friend. Always remember that what happened in the past inside your story would have a bearing with the present of your story. A person who was cheated upon would have a hard time trusting again so dont write it that he/she magically falls in love and immediately trusts the new guy. Lol i think ive talked a lot >~> im sorry if it's so long and honestly im not the most reliable person to ask for this not when i still have a lot of areas to improve on my work. At a glance, your video’s description may seem like little more than a spot to summarize your content. The reality is that in terms of YouTube optimization, descriptions are arguably the most important aspect of driving more traffic, while simultaneously scoring new leads.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to YouTube descriptions. In fact, most descriptions feel like a laundry list of social links and oftentimes don’t contain keywords at all:

You should treat YouTube descriptions similarly to how you might craft a meta description on a blog post in terms of keywords. With a massive 5,000 characters to work with, you have the opportunity to insert phrases naturally, while also giving a crystal clear overview of what your content is about.

But more importantly, descriptions are the ideal place to drop links which lead back to your site. Think of your descriptions as the launchpad from your YouTube channel to whatever CTA you might currently be promoting.

There’s no need to fill your descriptions with spam when there’s plenty of room for links and keywords alike.

3. Fine-Tune Your Transcripts & Closed Captions

Fun fact: Google crawls transcripts and closed captions of YouTube videos, but if and only if they’re crafted and uploaded manually by their creator. Taking the time to optimize your transcripts and captions beyond the auto-generated options represents a massive opportunity for your YouTube SEO.

Google has specific instructions for uploading transcripts and captions based on your video’s content. There’s a bit of a catch that many creators overlook, though. You can’t simply stuff keywords or phrases into your videos after the fact, but rather actually ensure that they’re spoken throughout your video.

That’s why it’s ideal to plan your keyword-based videos in advance, if possible. Shoehorning keywords for the sake of YouTube optimization is risky business and could potentially backfire on you.

4. Spend Time on Your Tags

There’s debate concerning how much weight tags hold in terms of YouTube SEO in 2017, but conventional wisdom tells us that they’re especially useful for ensuring that your videos pop up in “related” searches.

Considering that YouTube provides a 500-word limit for tags, there’s a generous amount of space for you to insert relevant terms for your video. To stay aligned with YouTube’s best practices, refrain from stuffing and instead hone in on related and colloquial keywords related to your video.

Tags were formerly public but are now only visible if you look “under the hood” of any given video. When you land on a YouTube page, simply hit “CTRL+U” to open the video source, then hit “CTRL+F” and type “keyword” to see the tags on the video in question. Pretty simple, right? You don’t necessarily need to obsess over tags, but even the smallest aspects of YouTube optimization can make a difference.

5. Spruce Up Your Thumbnail

Optimizing your thumbnails is an absolute must-do for YouTube creators. Even though thumbnails aren’t directly related to search engines themselves, an enticing or relevant thumbnail can be the difference between more subscribers and someone passing on your video.

Default thumbnails are rarely flattering and don’t do much to signal your video as “must click.”

On the flip side, custom thumbnails make your channel look much more polished, trustworthy and professional at a glance.

You don’t need to be a graphic designer to create compelling thumbnails, either. Tools such as Canva allow you to make thumbnail graphics from scratch. Once you’re happy with a design that meshes with your brand, you can save it in Canva as a template and adjust it time and time again.

Attractive thumbnails are just another piece of driving clicks to your content. Even if you don’t use a dedicated thumbnail template, just make sure not to stick with whatever default, random snapshot that YouTube picks out.

Intro to 5 fonts | Intro to Roman fonts | Fontology–fonts.com Machine-printed fonts should be readable, depending on their purpose. Usually, avoid geometric sans serif and modern Roman fonts in large blocks of text (like articles, essays, and letters) because their letters are too similar and difficult to read quickly. Instead, use normal sans serif and Roman fonts in large blocks of text and reserve geometric sans and modern Roman fonts for titles and headings.

Handwriting styles should be easy to write quickly and be easy to recognize. Handwriting and fonts should be different.

Never model your handwriting after a Roman or sans serif font!

Sadly, many early to mid 1900’s handwriting curricula teach geometric sans font-style for handwriting, but this is a mistake. If you want to write with a geometric sans font-style, that is an artistic style of writing that you should learn after first learning the natural writing style.

Why ‘Basic’ & Print Letters?

These “Basic” letters are intended to aid both printed and cursive writing practice, doubling as core practice for both writing skill levels. The Basic letters are slanted in anticipation of cursive, and many letters either have identical core components as cursive—such as: a, d, c, g, h, o, p, q—or contain principle proportions in size—such as: b, e, f, i, j, k, l, m, n, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z. Even Basic k and z have overlapping sizes with their cursive styles.

With this method, “Basic” letters followed by “Cursive Prep Curves” prepare students to write cursive quickly and well.

*Teaching tip: The following two charts are for reference, to help students see how writing styles can differ. This are not intended for significant teaching time. After learning to write the “Basic” letters, students may be interested in learning some of the alternate writing methods on their own initiative.

Note: “Print” is the same as “Basic”, but not slanted. The trailing “a” and “g” are “double story” versions as they would be written by hand. Usually, these are only seen in fonts, especially Roman. Other letters include alternate methods of writing.

The ‘What’ and ‘Why’ of ‘Guide Dots’

“Guide dots” are colored and shaped to indicate important “nav points” of stroke order. This is an alternative to using arrows and numbers, as in handwriting curricula developed through the 20th century.

“Guide dot” order is: 1. start on the green circle, 2. write to the yellow triangle as directly as possible, and 3. complete the rest of the letter so to end on the red square.

“Guide dots” are not intended to teach students by themselves. Handwriting requires observation and coaching from an instructor or a “floating” teacher in the classroom. These colored “guide dots” serve as key reminders for students who need to practice remembering stroke order in order to write correctly.

By using colors and shapes, rather than arrows and numbers, the curriculum focuses solely on the art-centers of the brain, not requiring math-logic centers of the brain, so as to consolidate neural resources and thus speed up learning. Writing is an art and should remain that way throughout the learning process. This approach presumes that requiring students to consider math and numbers while practicing an art would divide focus of the brain and, though it may make early stages of writing appear to progress more quickly, using numbers would slow students progress over the long run. By using only colors and shapes as “key reminders” rather than “comprehensive instructions”, most students should require more effort (never a bad thing in learning) to adjust and remember in the early stages, but should progress more quickly and with more quality over the long term.

These “guide dot” sheets could be printed in grayscale to lower costs (because shades of gray are distinguishable and clear shapes are retained), but color is best for the art-centers of the brain. The most economical approach is one colored version of each sheet per student, then grayscale versions if students require repeated practice; wall-sized classroom charts should always be in color. The first of each sheet per student and all wall charts in a classroom must be in color as legal condition of “PinkWrite™” brand-name licensing for any PinkWrite™ -licensed teacher or instituted school. Of course, do-it-at-home students don’t have this requirement since the material itself is free and open, though it is still advisable.

Cursive

Take one day to learn the skill you will use every day of the year and you have learned the entire year in one day.

Prepare for cursive by drawing decorative “cursive prep” curves on blank paper, then repeat lowercase letters—”l” loops & “m” on lined paper. Eventually, after all letters are learned, cursive should be written without any lines, on blank paper.

*Teaching tip: Curvy is key! Writing decorative loops first prepares the hand for writing ALL letters, making the process easier than less curvy cursive styles. Loops first, then all cursive lowercase letters at once, finally all capitals at once; then practice “trouble letters” as they crop up in daily practice of the entire alphabet.

Cursive Prep Curves *Teaching tip: The PinkWrite Cursive™ style is not how letters are “expected” to be written, but how letters are “attempted” to be written. Writing letters exactly this way should prove impossible, but by “trying their best to write as similarly as possible”, students will develop a style that is consistent, artful, and unique. Notes

Full, Half, and Quarter Curve starts are intended to help the student differentiate between letter types: F & T are more curvy. V & X are more angular. H, K, M, and N mildly blend curves with straight lines. After learning, a student could use Full, Half, or Quarter for all.

All Curl starts are intended to help the student identify the beginning of the letter stroke and practice control. After learning, they are entirely optional.

D’Nealian

D’Nelian was introduced in the late 1900s. “Manuscript” flowing print in first grade prepared students for a similar cursive the following year. This was a strong improvement over starting with “block letters” (handwritten Geometric Sans), then moving directly to cursive.

The PinkWrite writing script curriculum follows the principles of flowing print, but removed the controversial “monkey tails” from the first year “Basic” letters and made more artful cursive the second year. Flowing, curving cursive may seem more difficult if tracing, but if students learn to draw curves first, a curving cursive is actually easier to write, even for young students.
