Cold, Winter Nights {AFTG, Boydston // Fic Advent: Day 14}

It’s cold.

This is not new to Neil. It’s colder in Baltimore, but…

It’s been many years since he’s been up there (not long enough), and it’s alarming how quickly his body’s forgotten, and forgotten how to bear discomfort.

Instead of wallow in the squirming discomfort of it, he pushes himself out of his bunk, dragging the blanket with him and tight around his shoulders.

He shoves his feet into the bright orange slippers Nicky gave him as a joke that backfired because Neil loves them whole-heartedly and Nicky bitches every time he wears them.

The tower is quiet, halls deserted and even the quad outside the window empty as the temperatures continue to drop past freezing.

So really, it’s hardly his fault when he pads down the hall, into the suite that used to be his and still feels taboo despite it.

But the door creaks the same, and he knows where all the squeaky spots are. So when he pushes into the bedroom it’s as quiet as a whisper—as a ghost, and isn’t that funny when he’s basically one.

He smiles to himself, thinking about that instead of how his heart pounds in doubt. He’s been calmer in active gunfire.

It’s okay. He was told it was okay. Hinted it was wanted.

So he sniffs and rolls his lips together, looking only briefly at Matt’s handsome face smoothed out in easy sleep, and slips onto his bed beside him. Curls up immediately, not wanting to take up room, knees nearly to his chest, blanket tight around him.

And then caves within seconds, because Matt puts off heat like a large, hibernating animal. He shimmies and shifts, out of his blanket and into Matt’s. He spreads his own over top of them both.

And then freezes, holding his breath, as Matt sighs and shifts, nose scrunching as he hums in sluggish waking. Neil constantly marvels at how slow and easy some people can shake off sleep.

“Hey babe,” Matt says, low and cracking with sleep. He stretches, the mattress creaking beneath them, and worms an arm over Neil, tugging him in.

Neil flushes, instinct telling him to squirm away. “Mm, not Dan. S’Neil,” he whispers. Still okay?

Matt immediately smiles, eyes still closed in the sliver of moonlight between the slats of the bunk bed, and squeezes him tighter, closer, burying his nose in Neil’s hair and… and breathing him in. Only mumbles a little disgruntled at the press of Neil’s cold toes.

“Cold, baby boy?” Matt asks.

“Mhm,” Neil manages, and lets himself be bundled. Matt’s warm and holds him in a way he’s never felt. Worth the humiliation of vulnerability. His heart beats as fast as a frightened bird, and yet he falls asleep faster than he has in years.

He thinks he feels the press of lips against his forehead just as he drifts off.

aaron: ‘happy new year’ no punctuation, no emojis, nothing. wouldn’t be the first to text, but also not the last

nicky: ‘HAPOY NEW YEARS’ is his first text(he is the first to say it as well) but he also sends a text full of just exclamation point marks, and multiple with just emojis. just full on spams the chat

dan: ‘Happy New Years!’ maybe a cute emoji too, but not too much. maybe she’d add a sappy little, “thanks for this year, i’m super proud” or something. or maybe a gif. dan feels like she’d send gifs

matt: same as dan mostly?? no gif tho. i like to think that he’d send a separate text to just neil and be like ‘happy new year man, hope we have many more together :)’ or something like that bc i’m a sucker for the mattneil bro pipeline

kevin: a simple ‘happy new yrs’, maybe with an emoji, because he can’t be bothered to do anything more. secretly though, he’s glad for the new year, as it marks another year with his foxes, free from his past

andrew: he can’t be bothered to send a new years text, but the foxes all know that his is essentially tacked on with neil’s, at least in spirit

neil: what comes as a surprise to everyone is that neil does wish the foxes a happy new year. it’s a simple, quick, “Happy new year” and then he doesn’t touch his phone at all. it’s belated too, a few hours after the new year started, because he was distracted by a certain someone

Neil is lying on the dormitory carpet and his brain is flying apart and sticking to the walls, and that’s what it has, apparently, decided to focus on.“Matt,” he says.“Yeah?” Matt looks up from the fridge and turns to him, his face inquisitive. Matt is so open with his emotions. Maybe that’s why Neil doesn’t have to find words for his own around him.“Matt,” Neil repeats, louder. Because he needs– something. He can’t. He–“Can you,” he says.“Over here,” he says.“Lie on top of me?” he forces out, and it’s stupidstupidstupid when he puts words to it but he just–needs that. He needs to know Matt is here with his body, because his mind isn’t here for him right now.“Sure, man,” Matt says, all easy. He closes the fridge and lopes over, long lopsided strides because he’s comfortable, because he’s home (Matt is always home because Matt IS home), and crouches down beside Neil. Already Neil feels more present, feeling Matt’s body heat. “Right here?”“Can’t move,” Neil admits. Pleads. He could get up now for Exy, but not anything else. Matt’s eyes are so deepdarkbrown and they’re the only thing that makes any sense right now.“Okay,” Matt says, so so softly. He swings a leg over Neil’s and lets down his weight in scientific gradations, making sure he’s not crushing Neil at all. Neil sighs happily when Matt is flush on top of him. His brain is on the walls but his body is here, safe, under Matt, and nothing bad will happen to it now.Matt murmurs something Neil doesn’t process and kisses the side of his head, just above his ear. Neil brings dazed fingertips up to rest on Matt’s back, firm and solid and there. Sometimes Neil forgets he’s a real person. Matt is always there to remind him that Neil Josten exists.
